Christopher Columbus flagship replica docks in Alicante Visitors to the port of Alicante this weekend, will get a glimpse of a faithful replica of the ship that led to the discovery of ‘The Americas’ in 1492. The Nao Santa María replica, which carried Columbus on his famous voyage will open its decks to the public at Muelle de Levante 4, enabling visitors to get on board and discover the history and detail of this legendary ship.
by Andy Mansell
The vessel, which will remain in port untl Sunday evening, was recently constructed by the Nao Victoria Foundation, in collaboration with the Diputación Provincial de Huelva and the Cajasol Foundation, within the framework of the 525th Anniversary of the Encounter between Two Worlds.
Built as an exact replica, in a real size of 200 tons, 29 metres in length and eight in width and five decks, the ship has exquisite iroko and pine woodwork interiors constructed by master carpenters. The boat, launched last March, sailed from Huelva to the Canary archipelago to visit several of its islands, evoking the Colombian trips and the great maritime expeditions with America.
Arriving n Alicante from Fuengirola, the vessel will continue onwards on its tour of Spanish ports including Cartagena, Valencia and Algeciras, and some French ports as Sete, Grande-Motte and Port Vendres. In October, the ship will make the crossing of the Atlantic crossing to American coasts , where he will visit Puerto Rico, Cartagena de Indias and Havana.

Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, one of the most awarded directors and screenwriters of his generation and TV and movie star Alex Garcia, will both receive awards at a red carpet gala event outside the town’s Casa de Cultura on Saturday evening. The Festival de Cine short film competition, will present a total of 9000€ in prizes to film makers from all over Spain, who sent their entries in for consideration earlier in the year. Thirty years of the Benidorm promotes free Summer parking night train The famous Summer night TRAM service linking Benidorm with Alicante and coastal towns in between, begins this weekend, offering users a chance to party without taking their car. It was thirty years ago, in the Summer of 1998, that the FGV regional rail company decided to launch the weekend night link, known as the ‘Trennochador’, with a view to offering an alternative to car drivers using the coastal roads overnight. Advertised with the tagline ‘Tonight, Leave the
by Andy Mansell
car!’, the new service proved hugely popular with night time revellers, who would have previously chosen to use their vehicles to travel to bars and discos, without a viable alternative. Originally aimed at discouraging drink driving amongst the younger generation, in that first Summer almost 70,000 customers, both locals and tourists of all ages took advantage of the service. Through the intervening years, the service continued,
with occasional disruptions for maintenance work. In the 21st century, with the upgrade to the TRAM service, the night train became known as the ‘TRAMnochador’ and was extended to include other lines and destinations. This year the service operates throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays between Luceros station in Alicanteand the towns of Benidorm (L1) and additionally on three other lines from Luceros, SantVicent del Raspeig (L2); El Campello (L3); and Playa de San Juan (L4) with stops at the normal statons on each of these routes.
With the peak Summer months now upon us, finding a parking place in our towns and cities is becoming more and more difficult as visitors arrive for their annual holiday. Car owners become increasingly frustrated and can waste valuable time driving around trying, often without success, to locate a convenient spot. With this in mind Benidorm city council has launched a new initiative to promote and publicise the free car parks on the outskirts of the resort, which are available to both its residents and visitors. The aim of the plan is to alleviate the congestion placed on the streets within the centre of the city, by encouraging motorists to take advantage of the 3800 free parking places within the 29 designated car parks situated throughout the urban area. This should improve the parking experience for residents wishing to park close to their homes, people travelling into the city for work, or to use the beach or

go shopping and also those arriving in the city for their annual holiday, who may park up for the whole of their stay without moving their vehicles. Launching the initiative,
mobility councillor, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, explained that a brochure will be produced, highlighting the areas of the town where motorists can find parking, along with details of the nearest public transport stops to ferry them into the city centre.
He also added that the council were in discussions with the Lorente Bus company, to add more routes and greater frequency to its timetable during the next two months. The leaflet, which should be available to drivers within
the next few days is seen as part of the city council’s desire to become sustainable tourist destination. Future developments in technology, will see the creation of an App, which can be downloaded by drivers, which shows available parking places as soon as they enter Benidorm.

Gardening on the Costa Blanca
Mention was made last week of the surprisingly large number of species in this family and perhaps a start can be made by showing some of the less common ones. Hibiscus Schizopetalus, with various common names including Coral Hibiscus, Fringed Hibiscus, Skeleton Hibiscus, Chinese Lantern, Japanese Lantern, and Pagoda Flower, is a native of tropical East Africa Treatment here is much the same as H. rosa-sinensis but growth habit is rather leggy, with long, slender and flexible, gracefully arching woody branches up to 10 feet. It is a rapid grower and will easily achieve several feet of growth in a single season. Hibiscus Sabdariffa or Roselle, although it has typically attractive Hibiscus type flowers at its centre, is more noted for the red bracts which surround it. It

is actually a quite important commercial crop in many tropical countries. Its stems are used for Bast (bast fibres are processed for use in carpet, yarn, rope, netting or matting, traditional carpets, hessian or burlap, paper, sacks, etc) but the flower parts are extensively used as food or flavouring in many countries. It is also the source of Hibiscus Tea, available from Health Food shops , which is high in
Often on sale locally as ‘Blue Hibiscus’ is a beautiful and easily grown Australian plant more correctly called Alyogyne huegelii – even more difficult to spell than it is to say! Now classed as a separate species though of the same family as Hibiscus, it is not a true blue more of a mauve or lilac (or white) and, like all members of the family, its flowers last only about a day. It is from Western Australia and, like many plants from that region, prefers a well drained soil and probably limited phosphorus in its feed. Being such a striking plant, various members of the Malva or Mallow family have been adopted as the national flower of a number of warm countries and the Hibiscus is the flower tradition-
ally shown tucked behind the ear of Hawaiian and Tahitian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or has a boyfriend. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship. The yellow hibiscus is Hawaii’s state flower. Hibiscus plants prefer a cosy fit when growing in a container. This means that they should be slightly root bound in the pot and when you do decide to repot, give it only a little bit more room but lots of water and food when growing. If buds keep dropping off, check to see if you have got an insect infection and, if so, use an appropriate insecticide – one of the standard ones will probably do. The Hibiscus family with its wide range, probably rates a book of its own (and there are, in fact, several) but that should be enough to whet your interest.

Hormonal, Hot and Had Enough? The menopause is actually the last menstrual period of a woman’s life. The average age of the menopause is 51 but it can occur later or much earlier. It is the end of her reproductive years. She will stop producing eggs and her sex hormones drop to very low levels. However, problematic symptoms can begin around 10 years before this! This time leading up to the menopause, is called the peri-menopause. Women can also suffer menopausal symptoms for many years after the menopause too!
How will I know when I am going through the menopause? This is very difficult to answer as often a woman may not know, especially if she is younger than average. Her periods may be normal and regular but she may be experiencing other symptoms such as memory loss or tearfulness. Women may be misdiagnosed with depression when in fact the cause is hormonal. However, if you are aware of the symptoms of menopause, you may be able to piece together the puzzle. It is important to remember that these symptoms may have other causes that should be ruled out by a Doctor. Symptoms include: -Unusually emotional/irritable/angry -depression -anxiety -low energy -Low sex drive -Pain during sexual intercourse -Irregular/chaotic periods -Periods that are very heavy or unusually light -Hot flushes -Night sweats -Memory loss -Poor sleep -Inability to cope with life
Put this together with getting wrinkles, sagging skin and breasts and flab appearing from nowhere and you can see that this is not always a fun time in a woman’s life! The good news is that suffering is not compulsory! At the Family Medical Centre we take menopause very seriously we can help. See our Special Offer throughout July………a confidential Menopause Assessment with a sympathetic professional may change your life.

Immigration pushes up Spanish population for second year in a row, especially in areas with hot housing markets www.spanishpropertyinsight.com
More than half a million immigrants helped increase Spain’s population for a second year in a row last year, and most of them are heading for areas where housing markets are already tight.
Now a clear sign of Spain’s economic recovery, with big implications for housing markets in regional hotspots, is that immigration is growing fast, and has driven up the population for a second year in a row. So, thanks to immigration, the population is increasing the most in the two biggest cities and the islands, where the housing supply is restricted (in the islands and Barcelona by lack of space and planning restrictions, and in Madrid just due to planning restrictions). Whist the population
continues to grow in these areas, upward pressure will be maintained on house prices. Meanwhile, in the Spanish interior, one of the last populated parts of Western Europe, in regions like Castilla-La Mancha, Castile & Leon, and stunningly beautiful Extremadura and Galicia, the population is still falling, and so are house prices.

JGBC Hosts Spanish Team Training Camp for 2nd Year Running Once again, Javea Green Bowling Club has hosted a 2 day training camp for the Spanish National Team. Next week the Spanish Squad travel to Cardiff, Wales to
play against the U.S.A., Australia, South Africa and others in preparation for the ‘Atlantic Rim Tournament’ in 2019. All the disciplines were
played, Ladies and Gents Singles, Pairs, Triples and Rinks. So how did the Spanish Team fare against the Northern Costa Blanca teams, comprising players
from BBC, El Cid and JGBC. Every volunteer player from JGBC was given a game and the thrill of going up against the National Side. On the Saturday morning
matches the Spanish Squad prevailed by 5 games to 3. Saturday afternoon they won 7 games to 1. Sunday morning was a repeat score of 7 games to 1 and in the afternoon they won again by 6 games to 2. Adding that lot up means Spain won by a superb 25 games to 7, which must have pleased their Manager, Graham Cathcart. Graham stated he was impressed and pleased
with the quality of the greens and the facilities provided at Javea Green. The whole event was played in a spirit of great camaraderie and was enjoyed by Players and Spectators alike. Thanks are, therefore, due to the Club Management, Matthew and Brian Taylor and to our very own Alan Phillips for organising a well run tournament, thanks go also to the volunteer Umpire and Markers.
A.F.F.L. PRESENTATION
An all-round winner! Javea U3A members had a thoroughly enjoyable time at the July Dine & Dance evening – despite a clash with England’s vital World Cup match with Colombia! A number of fans sneaked inside the bar at Javea Golf Club, where the latest event was being staged outside on the terrace, to keep in touch with the action on the TV screen. However, it was a
winning night for all …. both the dinner-dance and the football! Thanks are due to group leaders Anne and David Watts, who organised yet another highly-successful function, despite the fact that many regulars were unable to attend because of a clash with the Javea Players Summer Show. Entertainment was provided by the excellent singer/DJ Steve Solo.
Last week the presentation for the 24th Alfaz Fantasy Football League took place at the Bar Code in Alfaz. For the 3rd year running, we had 6 different winners. Busquets. The overall winner was Darren whose team Daz XI finished top of the pile by a comfortable 76 points courtesy of 2 of his Players Harry Kane & Mo Salah who between them they notched up 493 Fantasy League points. The Brochure and Players List will soon be available after the World Cup finishes. The 25th anniversary A.F.F.L. will commence on Saturday 11th August so don’t miss out on this great Competition.
