Chorus Financial is a trading style of Tourbillon Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Commission (Gibraltar), Licence Number FSC1118B and registered with the UK FCA as an EEA Authorised firm, reference 539348.

Do you really know the difference?

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial Over the last year Chorus Financial have been very honoured to have been the invited Financial Advisory for ‘The Finance Tour’, Europe’s leading financial seminar. The Finance Tour allows Expats on the Costa Blanca to hear direct from the UK institutions who ultimately manage their pensions and investments. These includes Rathbone Brothers PLC, The

Prudential and London & Colonial. Having met many of you across the region, what was most revealing was the extent of financial mismanagement that sadly many Expats here in Spain have faced. So, what are the warning signs of poor financial advice? Regulation: This is so important. Chorus have the highest level of regulation available to anyone here in Spain, with the full investment and insurance licenses for our activities. Via our website you can see our full list of permissions with the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, as well as on the UK FCA’s website and the local regulators here in Spain. Many financial advisors in Spain have incredibly limited regulation, or even worse, do not display any details of their regulation on any of their paperwork, websites, newspaper articles etc. Without proper regulation you are unprotected throughout the entire advice process and in the future. Transparency: For me this is the second most critical element to receiving appropriate financial advice here in Spain. In the UK, it is illegal for a financial advisor to receive hidden

commissions when recommending an investment fund for your portfolio. Sadly, in Spain, that is not the case. If your financial advisor is choosing funds because they may pay them commissions, then they may not be designing a portfolio with your longterm financial goals in mind. Clues that your financial advisor is taking hidden fees, and potentially recommending less appropriate investments are: 1) A fund entry charge. This is often as high as 5%, and 100% of this goes to your advisor for recommending that fund. 2) Unusually high annual fund fee. UK based FCA regulated funds generally charge between 0.2% and 0.95% per annum. Funds that pay hidden commissions will have much higher charges than this, often as much as 2-3% per annum. 3) A tie in. Liquidity in a portfolio is often essential, but funds that pay a commission to the financial advisor may have a tie in of up to 5 years. This can be detrimental to the client’s long term financial health depending upon their goals. 4) Offshore funds. Is it illegal for

UK based funds to pay commissions to financial advisors, so often advisors will make unnecessary use of offshore funds. Offshore funds can easily be identified because the fund code (ISIN) will not start with the letters GB. You can see this on the dealing instruction your financial advisor will have asked you to sign to buy your investments. An example of what a UK ISIN looks like is GB00B41YBW61.

Chorus makes a simple promise, and that is that our recommendations will always be 100% tailored to our client’s needs, and we will never take commissions for recommending your investment funds. Unless you specify otherwise, your funds will always be invested by UK based, FCA regulated fund managers, in a diverse portfolio of trusted household names like HSBC, Investec, Rathbone Brothers PLC, and The Prudential. Chorus guarantee to better any proposal made by any advisory here in Spain, in both fees and quality, and promise to always put your needs first. If you’re considering a new investment or pension transfer you simply cannot afford to not get a second opinion. We offer this without charge or obligation, so you really have nothing to lose. FROM FRONT PAGE The investigation began on Wednesday, when Guardia Civil officers from the town were called to the emergency department of the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa, after a young boy was admitted with serious stab wounds. The boy, aged 13, had returned to his home in the Partida Cap Negret area of Altea, when he was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a masked assailant, in a bike storage area.

by Andy Mansell

He received two stab wounds to his neck during the attack, one of which was a few millimetres from an artery, which could have proved fatal. The officers began a search for the assailant by concentrating their efforts in the vicinity of the incident. They quickly discovered a knife handle resembling the one used in attack, plus a mask and pair of glasses which were similar to the ones worn by the perpetrator according

to the victim, hidden under a bench close to the incident. The investigators, who were able to identify the alleged attacker, proceeded to make an arrest on charges of attempted murder and carrying a dangerous weapon. The detainee appeared before a judge, who ordered his immediate imprisonment without bail, pending court proceedings. The victim remained in hospital overnight, receiving treatment for his two wounds, before being allowed home the following day.

Rapper allowed to stay

IN a case that has faint echoes of the Carlos Puigdemont affair, Belgium has granted Spanish rapper Valtonyc asylum. They have refused to extradite the artist, real name Josep Miquel Arenas Beltran, back to Spain where he is facing prison on charges of sedition relating to comments he has made, including rap lyrics. Earlier this year he was sentenced to three and a half years in jail by the National Court for breaking the law on glorification of terrorism and insulting the monarchy. The day before his sentence was due to start he fled Spain and made his way to Belgium. The Belgian court ruled on Tuesday that Valtonyc was exercising his right to

freedom of expression which is not a crime in Belgium and they would not be extraditing him. However the sentence remains valid in Spain, meaning if he returns here he will almost certainly be arrested.

Parents facing murder charge by Matthew Richards

A man and woman accused of the abuse of their two year old child face a charge of murder after their young son died from his injuries five days after being admitted to hospital. The toddler was admitted to the Vinalopo de Elche Hospital with serious injuries on 13 September. Health personnel immediately took the decision to inform the authorities, believing that the child was a victim of abuse. The 25 and 27 year old parents were arrested and the judge felt that the accusations were too serious to justify bail being granted. The hospital and National Police confirmed last Monday that the boy had sadly died of his injuries. It has also been reported that the father has admitted to punching the boy in the head. Sources also report that the child had pre-existing injuries.

Pool tragedy boy out of intensive care

Blair Scott, the eight year old Scottish boy found unconscious at the bottom of The Magic Robin Hood hotel swimming poolin Benidorm ten days ago, has regained consciousness and is able to sit up in bed, according to social media reports. As first reported in last week’s edition of The Weekender, following the incident, Blair was flown by Air Ambulance to the hospital in Alicante, where he was put into an induced coma, to help his recovery process. A family photo emerged a few days ago, showing the youngster, sitting up in his hospital bed, smiling as he tucked into a meal of chicken nuggets taken to him by his Aunt, Laura Scott. The photo was posted on social media, by Jacqui Perkins, who runs the facebook group, Benidorm & Costa Blanca News and Information Forum, with the message, “Here you go folks, first picture of little Blair eating chicken nuggets and chips that his Auntie Laura took in to him, glad to say he is now out of ICU and on the way to a full recovery, the family send all their thanks for your good wishes and donations and now look forward to getting him back to the UK.” Concerned at the plight of Blair and his family following the tragic events, Jacqui had set up a crowdfunding page on the JustGiving network, with a target of 2000 pounds to help raise enough to get the boy home. The accompanying message read,

by Andy Mansell

“Last week a young lad of 8 years old was found lying at the bottom of a swimming pool in Benidorm, he was rescued unconscious and CPR was administered until an ambulance team arrived and rushed him to hospital, and has since been put in an induced coma on a ventilator. “The lad remains in a critical condition he was with his father, mother and 3 other siblings. We are appealing for financial funding to keep the family together. We appreciate any help you can give” Earlier this week, an amount of 617 pounds had been raised towards the target, with an update from the organiser, which read, “Collection tins have been placed in various venues in Benidorm. With collection of money in the tins together with JustGiving and the 2 other donations I believe we have reached the halfway mark and collected 1000 pounds. I am keeping the fundraising going until I am informed little Blair and his family are going back to the UK ….” Meanwhile a statement released by the owners of Magic Robin Hood, which is situated between Benidorm and Alfas del Pi, IndustriasHotelerasMediterraneo SL, has come under fire from Blair’s father Kevin Scott for apparent inaccuracies. He claims to have several witness

statements contradicting certain sections of hotels version of events. Confirming the incident happened around 12 noon on September 9thand that the first aid service was provided by Aquatic Safe Company SL, the statement said that hotel guest Mrs Olivia Brolly, was the first to spot Blair on the pool floor, she alerted both another holidaymaker, David Lee, since returned to the UK, and on duty lifeguards. Lifeguard, Manuel Jimenez Rico, was the first to administer cpr and first aid to Blair, who was pulled from the pool wearing goggles and snorkel. He was assisted by hotel guests, who came forward to offer their help owing to their familiarity with recovery techniques, nurse, Patricia González Robles, another nurse Xavier Auba, a firefighter Juan Carlos Fernández and a local policeman José Antonio Blanco. The statement continued by saying, “At the same time, our employees tried to locate the parents, legal representatives or persons responsible for the child, who are not in the swimming pool or in its vicinity. They came to the area of the incident approximately twenty (20) minutes after the events occurred.”

5

“Once the emergency services showed up at the hotel facilities, they took care of the injured child’s medical care, transferring him to the nearest hospital to be able to provide the care required by the medical situation in which the child was.” An earlier statement released by Benidorm’s British Business Assocation, liasing with the family on behalf of the British Embassy, confirmed that they had visited Blair in hospital. “The parents are very grateful for our support and wanted to thank you all for your prayers and best wishes. We will give any news on progress when it is received. Thank you all once again for your concern,” concluded the statement. Donations can be made at https://www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/jacqui-perkins

FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2018

Local earthquake preparation not what it could be THE Valencian Generalitat has warned that municipalities across the Marina Alta and Alicante need to be better prepared in the event of major earthquakes. Small tremors are common in the area but scientists have said that the Vall d’Alcala, Denia and Pego are in locations that could theoretically experience quakes of up to 8 on the European macro-seismic scale while all of Alicante lies in an earthquake zone. A level of 8 is described as “Heavily damaging. Most people are frightened and run outdoors. Furniture is shifted, many buildings suffer slight to moderate damage, walls crack, chimneys can collapse.”

by Simon Russell

Before people start panicking, scientists have qualified their statements by saying that such an event is extremely unlikely, maybe only occurring once every few hundred years. However Alicante province is still a vulnerable area, described as being of “maximum seismic hazard”. The Generalitat has said that all towns should have emergency protocols in place such as organising security bodies, informing residents and ensuring buildings are stable. In other words although a major event is unlikely, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Unclaimed luggage with a twist by Simon Russell

NO-ONE has stepped forward to collect an unclaimed suitcase at Alicante bus station – probably because a sniffer dog had discovered that it contained a large stash of hashish. The case was in the baggage hold of a bus en-route from Algeciras to Barcelona last weekend when the dog detected the 30 kilos of drugs, packaged in bales. It was removed but none of the passengers on board would confess to being the owner of the bag when asked to come forward. One passenger did have a similar bag, although drug free, and they are under investigation but all passengers remain suspects. Bus stations do not have the same level of CCTV as travel hubs such as airports and rail stations, complicating the police task.

On your bike! AS part of it’s European Mobility Week activities Alicante has been promoting the bicycle registration scheme that runs in the city. Using www.biciregistro. es the scheme means your bicycle is registered with the local authorities in much the same way as a car or motorbike. The bike then has it’s own identification sticker, deterring thieves and making tracking your bike easier if it is stolen. The scheme is nationwide and Alicante is the Spanish city with the fifth highest number of users registered with the scheme. Other activities during the week included a free workshop on bike repair and maintenance and guided local tours to encourage people to walk more, highlighting some lesser known pedestrian routes.

Tackling hunger

ONDARA’S Social Services department have hopefully solved the problem of providing meals for those in need by signing an agreement with the Mare de Deu de la Soledat Residency. Social Services have a pledge to provide meals for those who can prove they need it, but does not have access to a canteen or kitchen. The agreement means they will now be able to use the cooking and dining facilities at the Residencia for a fee of €6 per person, paid annually. Before this agreement those being fed by the town hall had been sent to local restaurants which was a pricier way of dealing with the issue.

Graphic exhibition

THERE will be an exhibition of one of Spain’s most famous cartoonists at the Centre d’Art Tallars Ivars in Benissa, running until 21 October. Joan Castejon was born in Elche and settled in Denia and has had his works published and exhibited since the 1960’s, literally illustrating the change in Spain from a right wing dictatorship to the modern, cosmopolitan European country it is today. The curator has put together 46 of Castejon’s drawings from the last 50 years, beautiful pieces of work in their own right as well as being important political and social commentaries. Many of the works have been recently redrawn by Castejon who is still working and still considered relevant. His drawings have been exhibited across the world and he has won numerous awards.

FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2018

Benidorm old town landmark demolished One of Benidorm’s most emblamatic and iconic buildings has been demolished over the past week, to make way for a new hotel development. Villa San Pedro, a large two storey chalet, set amidst lush gardens of well maintained tropical trees and plants, occupied a priviliged position directly on the resorts Poniente beach front, close to the Parqued’Elche Dove Park, squeezed between high rise buildings. Originally built in the 1920’s, the villa and its land eventually became the largest private house in the Old town area, when land around it quickly became eaten up by apartment blocks and hotels as Benidorm grew into the huge resort it is today. Many rumours and myths surrounded Villa San Pedro, as residents were rarely seen occupying the chalet, although the gardens were always immaculately kempt even though the buildings shutters remained drawn for the majority of the year. One unconfirmed tale, suggest that the house was regularly used by General Franco and his wife, who both had a long held affinity for Benidorm, many believing

by Andy Mansell

the dictator’s widow, owned the property after his death. In truth, the Villa, actually remained in the ownership of the Cortes family, who’s descendent Pedro opened Benidorm’s first hotel, The Bilbaino, back in 1929. The Hotel Balbaino, another of the resorts iconic buildings, has been renovated over the years, but retains its original façade, and is still welcoming guests to its beautiful rooms overlooking Levante Beach and the Mirador

del Castello. Clearance work to remove the lush vegetation from the grounds of Villa San Pedro, began earlier in the summer, leaving local residents and regular tourists intrigued. New owners, the Catalan based H10 hotel group, waited until now, to begin demolition of the chalet and will soon begin the construction of Benidorm old town’s first new hotel in over ten years. The Four star plusestablishment will see be group’s first foothold

on the Costa Blanca, and will house around 200 bedrooms and suites over eight floors and two basements. Prestigious designer,Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the man behind a number of successful hotel projects, such as Only You in Madrid, has been commissioned to oversee theinteriors. The designer is renowned for his work on smaller boutique style projects and his portfolio includes hotels in the Room Mate chain andother H10 establishments in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon.

Shedding light on the past

AN archaeological dig at the Cova de les Bruixes in Benitatchell has been uncovering a number of significant finds, including this week three lamps dating back to the period of the town’s Islamic occupation. The site was once a farmhouse dating back around a thousand years and due to it’s distinctive Andalusian architectural style would have been the dwelling of successive Islamic farmers. The lamps would have held oil candlesticks, two of them dating back to the XIII century and the other from 300 years after. Other findings such as silos have given important historical clues about day to day life back then such as diet (mainly cereals, mussels and snails). The newly found lamps were probably used to light the storage silos. The farm was probably occupied by a family and consisted of half a dozen structures as well as facilities for keeping livestock and growing crops.

Pumpkin soup anyone? A smallholder in the Canary Islands has attracted the attention of the press after growing a 117 kilo pumpkin, one of the largest ever produced in Europe. 68 year old Francisco

by Simon Russell

Estupiñan started out life as a farmer but like many Spanish found he was making insufficient money to support his family. In common with

many of his countrymen he returned to his first love in retirement and as well as pumpkins grows potatoes, garlic and beans at his patch of land on the small island of Fuerteventura. Francisco said that he hadn’t tried to cultivate a giant pumpkin, but had noticed some huge specimens c o m i n g from the plant which eventually

11

produced the giant, up to 40 kilos. However 117 kilos is exceptional and three people were needed to load it onto a van. After the press and others have finished taking photos of the vegetable Francisco intends to make it into soups and stews for his family – who may hope they never see another pumpkin again by the time it is finished

Out with the old, in with the new

DEMOLITION work has begun on one of Benidorm’s oldest and most emblematic buildings to make way for a new hotel. The Villa San Pedro was constructed on the front line of Playa

by Simon Russell

Poniente in the 1920’s when Benidorm was little more than a fishing village. H10, the Catalan company building the new hotel have had

permission to clear the site for a few months, but wanted to wait until after the summer to begin the actual demolition. The new four star hotel is the first to be built in the area for several years.

FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2018

One killed and 12 injured in scaffold collapse at Ritz Hotel A forty one year construction worker lost his life and eleven of his colleagues were injured, when a floor collapsed during renovation of the iconic Ritz Hotel in Madrid earlier this week. The deceased, Romulus NA, from Ivory Coast, who had been employed on the project since July, was on site with around 100 other construction workers at the time of the incident last Tuesday afternoon. Unconfirmed reports suggest an error during demolition of an exterior wall on the sixth floor, caused part of the floor to collapse, taking down sections of the five floors below. The debris eventually landed on an interior courtyard where the victims were going about their work, along with their fellow workers, the majority of whom were from South America, Sub Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe. The victim’s body was discovered buried under rubble by rescue workers

by Andy Mansell

and Madrid City firemen, almost two hours after the collapse. Of the 11 injured, four were trapped in a mountain of rubble, one of whom was rescued immediately, whilst two more were heard crying for help. The most seriously injured is a 42-year-old operator who was transferred to the Gregorio Marañón hospital with a traumatic brain injury, whilst a 31-year-old Spanish worker was transferred to the Hospital 12 de Octuibre. One construction worker, speaking to Spanish press, described feeling an extreme tremble in the building, before the incident, explaining “It was a miracle because many more people could have died but most have been able to avoid the avalanche of debris.” The Ritz Hotel, part of the prestigious Mandarin Oriental group, closed its doors to guests in February to undergo a 99 million euro refurbishment, which

will reduce the amount of rooms from 137 to 106 and increase the number of suites from 30 to 47. A newly reformed main restaurant will have access to the splendid terrace overlooking the Paseo del Prado. In addition, the classic glass cover will be reinstalled in the centre of the hotel, removed in the 80s due to technical problems, which will allow light to enter the room, as it did when it was inaugurated by Alfonso XIII in 1910. It was part of a commitment he made, to create a hotel in the image of his fellow “Ritz brothers in Paris and London”. The director general of the Municipal Police, Andrés Serrano, clarified that the Judicial Police Unit of the City of Madrid will be responsible for investigating the causes of the accident.

Paedophile on the run POLICE have issued an arrest warrant after a man accused of raping his two daughters failed to show up on the first day of his scheduled trial. The 46 year old from La Ribera (Valencia) had been accused of the systematic

sexual abuse of his children, starting from when they were aged just 12 and 13. The alleged abuse started in 2007 and only came to light in 2015 when the girl’s mother found out about it and told the authorities. The accused was arrested

but was released pending the start of the trial. Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of 22 years if found guilty; questions may well be asked of the courts as to whether he should have been released pre-trial due to the risk of flight.

Catalan takeaway Highlighting the personal touch

A Catalan supermarket chain has acquired all 57 Masymas supermarkets which operate across the Valencian Community. Fragadis, which operates under the Spar label in its home region, made the announcement last week. Masymas has 600 staff and a turnover of about €83 million per annum, making it one of Alicante’s largest businesses. Fragadis have

not said what their plans are with the new store and whether they will be rebranded. They announced the following day that the acquisition would include the four Eurocash selfservice stores owned by Masymas and their logistics platforms. The takeover does not include the Masymas de Pedreguer which is a separate entity.

DENIA’S indoor market started it’s new campaign this week, focusing on the people who work in the market and run the stalls. The aim is to highlight the personal service you will receive as opposed to buying produce in the big supermarkets. The knowledge of the sellers is also made clear, many of who have been running their stall all their working life. Their product knowledge is unbeatable and they

Sultry and stormy August THE Spanish Met Office has said that there were 22,000 lightning strikes across Valencia in August, the highest for 20 years. With electrical storms in the summer there is always the risk of fire, and 61 incendiary incidents have been classified as being ignited by lightning last month. Although it may not always have felt like it due

Fleeing driver found with drugs

by Simon Russell

A driver who tried to evade the police after being asked to stop at a patrol point has been arrested along with his passenger after drugs were found in their car. The incident happened in Elche when the car was flagged down at a static control point last weekend. The driver sped away at high speed, evading the patrol officers who gave chase. The suspect drove through the city in a reckless manner, swerving, changing lanes and ignoring traffic signals. However the vehicle travelled down a dead end road; the following police car blocked it in and the occupants were detained. A search of the car then revealed a half kilo of processed marijuana, ready for sale. An Algerian male and Spanish male aged 25 and 32 have been charged with traffic safety violation, damaging a police vehicle and public health violations concerning the drugs.

FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 2018

Moros y Cristianos fiesta weekend in Altea The festive lights are already adorning the streets of Altea in preparation for the biggest festival of the year, the spectacular Moors and Christians Fiesta, which kicks off on Friday September 21st. With five days of colourful parades, mock battles in the old town, daytime gunpowder detonations and fireworks at night, bands, discos, fun and laughter, the famous Moros y Cristianos fiesta is the highlight of the calendar for many residents and visitors to the normally sleepy seaside town of Altea. For over four centuries, this festival has recreated the historic clash between two cultures, commemorating the confrontation that took place between Moorish and Christian soldiers in the 13th century over the rule of Spain. Almost unique to the Valencia Province of Spain, most towns and cities hold a Moros y Cristianos fiesta, although some, such as those in

by Andy Mansell

Alcoy, Villajoyosa and Altea are bigger and more spectacular than others. For the uninitiated, the Altea fiesta can be quite breathtaking for its attention to detail, from the battlements resembling a Moorish castle, situated in the Plaza d’Iglesias, old town church square, to the beautiful costumes worn by both the Moors and Christians in their separate parades. The events are held in honour of the town’s patron saints who also played a decisive role in the battle. Thanks are given to Santísimo Cristo del Sagrario and San Blas whose sudden and unexpected intervention helped ensure victory for the Christians in spite of their being outnumbered by the Moors. Townspeople spend all year raising money for their social clubs, known as penyas, and many of them play roles depicting either moors or Christians during

the festival, which despite representing a bloody period in the history of the province, is all played along in a good natured fashion. The main fun begins on Friday night with a parade through the central part of the town, featuring marching bands and flower girls and the inauguration of the main fiesta site, which this year is found on the car park, close to the football stadium, adjacent to the river Algar, where the Tuesday market is normally held. Every night for the next few days, different bands and dj’s will entertain the crowds, through until the early hours of the morning from the specially erected stage. At midnight a parade of Moors and Christians marching together snakes along the same route as the earlier parade. The highlight of Saturday is the spectacular march of the Moors at 20.00h, which takes in several old and new town streets before ending in the Plaza D’Esports.

Whereas, Sunday sees, the explosive daytime display of rockets and ear shattering fire crackers known as the Mascleta, which can be witnessed on the seafront car park on the PaseoMediterraneo at 14.00h. A solemn procession at 20.00h followed by a firework

display at midnight round off Sundays proceedings. On Monday September 24th it is the turn of the Christians to make their spectacular parade along the same route as the moors took previously, with the final offering being a flag parade to close the fiesta on Tuesday at 16.30h.

If you live in or are staying in Altea this weekend, expect very little sleep, but instead take to the streets to witness one of the most incredible of all Spanish fiestas. For full details of the Altea Moros y Cristianos, check out our accompanying programme information guide.

Tablets for the elderly THE Javea Rotary Club have presented a number of new tablets to the town’s two centres for the elderly, the Maria de Betania Day Centre and the Virgen de la Soledad Residency. These are to help the older generation with their cognitive ability through a structured programme set up by professionals in the field.

by Matthew Richards

The Rotary Club said that “this is not about entertainment or play, but a work tool with which to stop the deterioration that age and illness can induce”. This donation complements the initial one made five years ago but with advanced technology.

Roman treasures Ecopark fire burns on THE Soler Blasco Museum in Javea has expressed its thanks for two private donations that has enhanced it’s already large collection of Roman artifacts. Cleaning up the world, one bit at a time VOLUNTEERS in Benidorm have once again taken part in the annual “Clean the World” campaign, this time focusing on the El Moralet area which has become increasingly neglected over recent years. This is close to the train station and many people use the wasteland as a parking area, sadly often failing to clear up their litter behind them.

Several councillors, the Red Cross and members of the fire brigade took part in the public clear-up. Mayor Toni Perez said “we must preserve what we have inherited and try to leave it in a better state than we found it”. It is hoped that in the future the area will be turned into a public recreation spot.

jug usually used for wine, was found on the seabed in the 1940’s and probably originated from Andalusia. The smaller jar was also discovered by the Sagarra family and is believed to have been made in Ibiza. The family has been donating from their private collection for the last 30 years.

A major fire at the Benissa ecopark needed to burn itself out for three days before the site could be declared safe on the orders of emergency crews. The spectacular fire started last Friday and threatened a nearby pine forest. There were also initial concerns about the 60 dogs at the nearby Akira animal shelter which it would have been very difficult to evacuate.

by Simon Russell

Land and air crews fought the flames for 24 hours and brought the worst of it under control on Saturday, helped by heavy rain. The nature of the waste at the ecopark had meant there has been thick noxious smoke, while there was also a lot of slow burning flammable materials such as garden waste.

Getting rid of your old tech safely

Alfaz del Pi had a campaign day last week, informing locals about the importance of ensuring that their old electronic equipment doesn’t end up in landfill sites due to harmful contaminants in batteries and other components. An information bike went round the town on market day and

special drop off points have been established. As well as modern devices TV’s, microwaves and fridges are among items that have to be disposed of separately and safely. Contact your local town hall for further information about environmentally friendly recycling.

Green pool opens

Youth area reopens by Simon Russell

by Matthew Richards

THE municipal pool in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has now reopened after it’s two week refurbishment. The pool has been made more sustainable and ecologically friendly, with improvements including a heat recovery machine and new condensing boiler. The latter has an efficiency level of 105% and will save 87 tons of carbon CO2 per annum while the heat recovery unit will be 90% more energy efficient than the old one. There are also plans in place to replace the solar panelling with new photovoltaic ones, the first such installation in Spain and with 100% renewable energy.

Kamikaze tourist

ASTONISHED onlookers witnessed a drunken British tourist purposely charging headlong at a speeding taxi cab in Ibiza this week. The viral video shows the man run into a bin, screaming and then diving into the path of the taxi. He smashed the windscreen and slid off into the road, looking to be badly injured. The 24 year old was taken to hospital but his injuries were described as not serious. However the hospital decided to keep him in A&E as a precaution – and to allow him to sober up. The incident happened in Playa d’en Bossa, a popular resort for young British holidaymakers

PLAY Jove, the youth and entertainment centre in Javea, is now fully open. The centre is located on Plaza de la Constitucion and is open on weekdays from 5.30 to 8.30 in the evening as well as on Saturdays for one off events such as tournaments and workshops. Leisure activities for the kids include table football, basketball and football as well as tabletop games and wifi. There is also a study room which will be manned with an adult monitor to help children with their school work. Play Jove started in 2016 and is funded with an annual grant of €25,000 from the Valencian Youth Institute.

Injured child in Ruined resting bureaucratic places limbo by Matthew Richards

THE parents of a child who was injured in a football match 18 months ago have themselves paid for an operation he needed after a dispute over who was responsible for paying for treatment. The boy was injured in a competitive match in March 2017, snapping cruciate ligaments while playing for Benissa Cadets. The club insurance should have meant that the Valencian Football Federation picked up the bill.

However he was accidentally listed as playing in the next game and again a few weeks later. Because of this the Federation refused to pay, saying he could not have been injured. Benissa council also refused to pay, saying the responsibility lay elsewhere. After a year and a half of toing and froing the parents have paid the €9,300 required for treatment and rehabilitation, although they are still fighting the case.

A large part of the Benissiva cemetery in the Vall de Gallinera has had to be condemned due to repeated landslides and erosion, caused by a combination of the heavy rains in 2016/17 and the age of the plots. The niches effected are numbered between 102 and 146, a total of nine columns and five rows. Holders of these spaces have ten days to challenge

the decision before the removal work starts. The law with buildings such as this is that if the cost of repairs is over 50% of the cost of rebuilding from scratch the building or part of it will be condemned. In this instance repairs have been estimated at €32,000 and the cost of new niches at €56,000, with a high risk that the repairs may not be effective.

“Train bomb” was exploding tablet

A young woman whose tablet exploded on a Madrid train causing panic among passengers has admitted even she thought someone had planted a bomb in her bag. Student Carla said that her purse “swelled up like an air bag” before seemingly exploding after she had thrown it to the ground. The faulty device produced a lot of smoke and the train was forced to stop. Passengers then escaped to the tracks while oncoming trains were halted. One passenger said it was

like a scene from a horror movie, with widespread panic and people thinking that they were victims of an ongoing terror attack. Three passengers were treated for smoke inhalation and nine for anxiety attacks but there were no serious injuries. When things had calmed down, the cause of the smoke was tracked to the student’s handbag where the tablet’s battery had caught fire. The devices manufacturers have been asked for comment but have not currently responded.

Prize Paella Like a caged animal

AN animal rights activist in Alicante has locked himself in a cage indefinitely as a protest against the way many animals and pets are treated in Spain. Alfredo Diaz has been in his voluntary confinement since 3 September, in a cage normally used for abandoned

dogs at a rescue centre in the city. His protest is to draw attention to the number of abandoned and mistreated animals in the country and he wants higher penalties for those guilty of animal cruelty. His protest is being streamed live on YouTube and Facebook.

THE International Paella Contest held annually in the Valencian town of Sueca is keenly fought each year, with the winner not only picking up a first prize of €2,500 but the guarantee of a sharp rise in diners over the year they hold the crown. This year’s winner was Restaurante Bon Aire in El Palmar, while Restaurante Monastrell in Alicante was awarded the runner up prize. Bon Aire’s father and son chefs, Raul and Jordi Magraner, were delighted with their achievement, saying it had been very hard work for several months but the win made it all worthwhile. They refused to reveal all their secrets, but did let on that controlling the boiling of the broth was essential. The best paella from outside of Spain was judged to have been made by the Simply Spanish restaurant team from Melbourne. This was the 58th contest and 2018 saw 40 selected contestants from all over the planet take part including Peru, Japan, Mexico, France and the USA.

Man and child found dead

Summer with a sting in the tail THERE were 18,000 jellyfish stings reported in Alicante province this summer, 7,000 more than the previous year. The figures were compiled from data provided by lifeguards and other beach safety personnel and has been made public by the Coastal Ecology Institute. The actual numbers stung will be much higher say the institute, due to factors such as the event occurring in beaches where there are no lifeguards and people not feeling the need

to seek treatment. They also say the jump cannot be seen as definitive evidence that there have been more jellyfish overall, it may be just that they have appeared at times and places where there were a large number of bathers. Altea, Elche, Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada were the beaches that reported the most incidents, while Benidorm saw a drop of almost 500.

THERE are fears that the bodies of a man and child discovered in a car in France are those of a father and son reported missing by the boy’s mother. The Spanish national from Barcelona informed the police that the boy had not been returned after a planned visitation with his father.

The bodies were found in a car in the Languedoc region last weekend and it has been confirmed only that they are Spanish nationals. Their cause of death or identity has not been released at this stage; the case is in the hands of the French authorities.

BA craft in emergency landing

Small fortune found in shoe boxes TWO men have been arrested on money laundering charges after just under €1.3 million was discovered hidden in shoe boxes in a delivery van they were driving. The van was stopped and searched by the Guardia Civil in Sagunto (Valencia) last week. They have not said whether the

vehicle was targeted or stopped as part of a routine patrol. A spokesman said they will also be investigating whether the 29 and 39 year old detainees have any connections to terrorism which the cash may have been earmarked to finance.

Caught in the act

A British Airways flight from Alicante to London was forced to return and make an emergency lading just four minutes after taking off. The incident happened on Tuesday when the pilot warned the control tower in Alicante he was going to have to return immediately. The plane had to circle and discharge it’s fuel and the full Emergency Protocol plan went into action with firefighters and other staff standing by on the tarmac. Thankfully the forced landing was without incident and the passengers were safely transferred to the terminal awaiting new travel

arrangements. It has not been reported what prompted the pilot to have to abort the flight, although it is believed to be a technical fault rather than an incident involving anyone on board.kidnapper. Once identified, the agents, based in Ibi, travelled to Benidorm to arrest the suspect, of Spanish nationality, on charges of illegal detention, robbery with violence and intimidation and of causing injury. He was placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, before finally been released on charges, pending the conclusion of the

Bargain basement queen BRITISH tabloid paper the “Daily Mail” reported excitedly this week on how Spain’s Queen Letizia had attended an official engagement wearing an off the peg dress available on most major Spanish high streets. Letizia and King Felipe were visiting a technology centre in Salamanca last Tuesday with the queen wearing a Massimo Dutti white and navy dress costing about €100 – although they did point out that the austere outfit was offset with a €6,000 pair of Chanel earrings. Massimo Dutti has around 200 stores in Spain and 800 worldwide and is part of the huge Inditex retail group which also includes the likes of Zara and Bershka If Daily Mail readers in the UK

Scouts long march to battle cancer A group of nine Benidorm scouts have hiked 700 kilometres across some of Europe’s most challenging terrain

to raise money for a charity that supports local breast cancer sufferers. The group, young men and women aged between 18 and 22 from the Horizontes de Benidorm troupe, walked the French Pyrenees over several weeks of the summer, a route that included the 2,900 Mount Posets, the second highest peak on the Pyrenees.

Weather played a major factor and even in the summer some of the higher points had snow to contend with. Local businesses sponsored the scouts for a Euro a kilometre and money raised will go to Anemone, the Marina Baixa association for women with breast cancer.

The number 1 reason why you should apply for your Spanish residency before it’s too late

Here is the reason. Right here. Right now. Not at the middle of the article. No persuasive writing strategies to keep reading until the end. The number 1 reason is called ‘Brexit’, and the next paragraph should describe what Brexit is, but chances are you’ve already heard about it too much.

Therefore, we would like to let you know a few things that could radically change after Brexit. The main one? Freedom of movement. If the UK became a non-EU country like Australia or the USA, this would mean you would have to apply for a visa at the Spanish embassy/consulate in the UK. High financial requirements. Private health insurance (we’ll speak about this in a moment). Waiting for around 1-2 months to get a resolution. The other important aspect is health coverage. As of today, any citizens from an EU

country on a state pension can access the Spanish health system (at no cost) through a standard EU document (S1, E121, E106). How would it be if the UK became a nonEU country? No choice: private health insurance. And to make sure you’ll take it, it will be required during the visa application. Could you afford a private health insurance? Otherwise, the formula would be: no private health insurance = no visa (and no Spain, subsequently).

To be honest, at Sun Lawyers we don’t pretend to join the people predicting what Brexit will bring (we couldn’t do it even if we tried). There might be bilateral agreements that leave things the way they are now. Or it may turn out to be the worst case scenario I mentioned in the last two paragraphs. What’s true is that nobody knows yet what’s going to happen. Not even governments. So when we receive emails from people wor-

Small businesses unprepared for a Sponsored By no deal Brexit Small businesses are worryingly unprepared for the possibility of a no deal Brexit, research has found. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) looked into how small businesses were preparing for the possibility, and the findings show a chaotic picture of the post-Brexit UK. Over 1,200 businesses were part of this research that was carried out this month. The whole country is unsure of what is to come with a no deal Brexit, but small businesses need to have a contingency plan in place to avoid chaos. The research found that only 14% of small businesses had started planning for a no deal Brexit. The possibility looms, yet the percentage of small businesses getting prepared is very small. Around 41% of the businesses believed that a no deal Brexit will have an impact on their business, however, as of yet have failed to get prepared for the prospect. A small number of businesses, one in ten, think that should a no deal Brexit take place, their business will be affected positively. Whereas nearly half (485) of small business think that they will be negatively affected by a no deal Brexit. However, even this notion has failed to push them to get prepared. The figure of 48% shot up to 66% for businesses that trade in the EU. It was 61% for small businesses that employ staff from the EU. Mike Cherry, the chairman of the FSB commented: “Looking at this research it is obvious that our small firms are not prepared or

ready for a chaotic no deal Brexit and the impact that it Tel: 671 935 072 will have on their businesses. “If you sell your products to the EU, buy goods from the EU or if your business relies on staff from the EU, you now see this outcome as a clear and present threat to your business. “It is deeply troubling that the prospect of a no deal Brexit is seeing many small firms shelving business decisions, pausing investment and more drastically, thinking about cutting staff. These businesses are the growth engines of the UK economy and it is critical that the Government listens to their worries. Some businesses are stopping business development and innovation because they are unaware of what a no deal Brexit will mean. 35% of small businesses say they will likely postpone big business decisions and innovations. Around 21% reported that they would cut staff and expenditure. Mike Cherry added: “At this stage, it is understandable that some small businesses haven’t started preparing as they aren’t actually aware of what they are planning for. What we need now is the Government to work with the small business community to ensure that they are adequately prepared and supported if a no deal Brexit becomes a more likely outcome in the coming weeks.

ried about Brexit and asking if we know the outcome, we replicate the same answer over and over again: “nobody knows, but our recommendation is that you take action before it’s too late”. Why? Well, because of that, because nobody can ensure howlife in Spain will be beyond Brexit. However, we can guarantee 100% that it’s not too late yet to apply for your Spanish residency because you will already have your foot in the door when Brexit becomes a reality. The main benefit we see: peace of mind. Have you had Spanish residency for more than 5 years? Then, reapply for it to get the permanent status. This line will be printed at the bottom of your card: “residentecomunitariopermanenteenEspañadesde (date)”. Are you thinking about moving to Spain?

BREXIT - The Citizens’ Rights Agreement

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/advice-for-british-nationals-travelling-and-living-in-europe#progress-in-the-negotiations---citizens-rights-agreement The UK government has reached an agreement with the European Union on citizens’ rights in negotiations on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. This will provide certainty about the future of UK nationals and their families living in the EU. Most importantly, it will allow UK nationals to stay in their Member State of residence after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019. On 19 March 2018, the UK government reached a further agreement with the Commission on the terms of a time-limited implementation period that will start on 30 March 2019 and last until 31 December 2020. (BPT) - Dogs and their owners have many things in common. For example, they both love to eat! When preparing a meal for your fourlegged family members, make sure it’s packed with flavor and nutrients, and you are creating a dining experience they enjoy and look forward to. Help give your pets the ultimate mealtime experience with these tips: 1. Create a mealtime routine Animals love routine. It’s important for dogs to establish a mealtime routine whether they get fed first thing in the morning, after their walk or as small meals throughout the day. Your pooch will quickly catch on when it’s mealtime.

game out of their meal? Puzzle bowls and food dispensing toys are a fantastic way to stimulate your dog’s mind during mealtime. They allow them to slow down to truly enjoy their food, making mealtime fun! Head to your local retailer to choose the correct bowl or toy for your dog. 3. Provide your dog with a meal that gives them variety Dogs and humans alike enjoy food with variety! To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create take-your-pet-towork programs. Consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many

advantages of such pets-atwork programs. They can benefit health. Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employees’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels in addition to alleviating anxiety. They can improve

employee retention. Sixty-three percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they are very satisfied with their work environments, nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. They can alleviate loneliness.

Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That’s partly because talking about pets can make it easier for people to approach and converse with co-workers.

10 Warning Signs of Cervical Cancer You Should Not Ignore

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. It occurs in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Women of all ages are at risk of developing this cancer after they begin having sexual intercourse. One of the frightening things about this cancer is that it does not show any symptoms in its early stages hence routine screening is vital. It is only after the disease has spread that symptoms begin to appear:

4. Pain during Intercourse Painful intercourse is another important warning sign of cervical cancer. This symptom may indicate advanced cervical cancer

NEW Suzuki Ignis

With its distinctive styling, cleverly packaged interior layout and economical 1.2-litre petrol engine, the Suzuki Ignis is a surprisingly sensible

alternative to the other city cars. It also provides an extra bit of crossover character and the option of all-wheel drive for those who need a bit more off-

road capability. The Ignis has a spacious cabin despite being very compact in size. There’s enough head and shoulder room in the back row for

Hands free biking

FOR some expatriates riding a motorbike on the relatively quiet and often spectacular Spanish roads is one of life’s great pleasures. What would they make of the latest innovation that is in the pipeline – self driving bikes? BMW has been testing the autonomous machine at their own track in France this week and they say that the R 1200 G can accelerate, decelerate and turn without any driver intervention. “The objective of the prototype is to accumulate additional knowledge regarding driving dynamics when detecting dangerous situations. This can then support the driver with the appropriate safety systems in situations such as sudden braking and junctions.” their head engineer Stefan Hans said. However in Spain, as with self driving cars, the technology seems to be well ahead of the legislation that will allow the vehicles on public roads.

a couple of adults to sit in reasonable comfort and boot space is respectable for such a little car, at 267 litres. That’s enough for trips to the shops, plus the

rear seats can be folded to increase capacity to 1100 litres - though they don’t fold flat. The 90PS 1.2-litre petrol engine the Ignis comes with is shared with the Swift, available with or without a simple hybrid system. Called SHVS, this adds an integrated electric motor that helps with acceleration. It provides slight economy and emissions improvements, but even without SHVS, the 1.2 is a fun, revvy and surprisingly economical engine with a good record for reliability. It´s a perky performer but the steering isn’t great and there’s some body roll through bends. The suspension provides a reasonable level of ride comfort, but over rougher

Clunk click saves child’s life

A young mother and her five-year-old son were both injured when their car overturned in the Albufereta area of Alicante on Tuesday. The accident occurred at about 8 am when the victims collided with another car. When their car ended up on its roof a fire crew was called and managed to take the youngster out by a window. However, his mother was

trapped for quite a while and special equipment was needed to extract her from the vehicle. Both were transferred to the hospital where the youngster’s injuries are understood to not be serious. Police later said that if he had not been strapped into the correct child restraints and his mother had not been wearing a seatbelt

and broken road surfaces it can feel harsh and uncomfortable. It’s not bad, but nor is the Ignis as sharp or as fun to drive as the Volkswagen Up and its counterparts from Skoda and SEAT. The Ignis is well equipped. Even the basic SZ3 comes with airconditioning, DAB radio, USB connectivity and Bluetooth. But we’d go for the SZ-T, since it isn’t much more expensive and adds alloy wheels, touchscreen system with navigation, a reversing camera and chunkier styling, thanks to roof rails. Top models gain luxuries like climate control and cruise control, keyless entry, along with active safety technology. If you want to avoid the typical small hatchbacks, the Ignis is a quirky-looking alternative with more character than its rivals. But it’s also well-priced, wellequipped and cheap to run, so as outside choices go it’s very sensible. It might not be quite as good to drive as an Up, but there’s still plenty to recommend.

the violent accident could well have been fatal. The driver of the other vehicle involved was unhurt and tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The crash caused major delays during the busiest part of the day for about two hours; a palm tree badly damaged in the incident also had to be removed for safety reasons, causing further delays.

Season 53 Episode 1 BBC2 11:00 pm Tues 25th September

NEW SERIES: Arkansas, USA New series. Ben journeys to the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas, to live with master craftsman Robert, learning why this 70-year-old former medical student ditched his education for America’s counterculture 20 years ago, bought 200 acres of land deep in the woods, and raised a family of six children. Drop Quotes are similar to A cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hid- S den quote. A black-and-white H crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

With the 1st International Break out of the way, it was back to business for the Premier League & the Alfaz Fantasy Football League. The International Break slowed down the pace of the Competition with the average score dropping down to a lowly 20 points the lowest so far this Season, after previously averaging 28 points. The 9 Premier League games gave the A.F.F.L.29 goals, only 3 clean sheets, 25 yellow cards (including 4 games in which not a card was produced) and 2 red ones which were Manchester United’s Matic & Leicester City’s Morgan who received their marching orders after collecting 2 yellow cards. Referee Craig Pawson has dismissed 3 Players so far this Season in 4 games so Players Beware! Eric’s team Peaky Blinders became the 5th team to reach the Summit of the A.F.F.L. when they took a fragile 8 point lead over Jeanette’s team Jin Dream Team. Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser helped the Peaky Blinders ascent to the top spot when he scored 2 goals and had an assist in the Cherries 4-2 victory over the Foxes. Three teams are in joint 3rd place and they are Pauline’s Vodka Army, Barbra’s XI and Clarky’s Deportivaclarkorunu. We have a change at the bottom with Keith’s Mof Town replacing Kim’s Ginger United after only scoring 3 points this week. We also have new leaders at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section where Jin’s Dream Team have edged just

1 point ahead of last Season’s winners of this League Pauline’s Vodka Army. Linda’s Team Tapas have slotted into 3rd place and are 12 points away from the Summit. Down at the foot of the table, Kim’s Ginger United are making a fist of it and are now only 1 point behind Kate’s team The Bairns. Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar are going from strength to strength at the top of our Junior League and have now built up a strong 17 point advantage over William & Henry’s team who have jumped back to 2nd place. There are quite a few changes at the bottom end of the table with Roo& Woos Wombles scrambling out of the relegation zone, leaving Real City in the last spot trailing Fleetwood Gian by 13 points. Des’s team Wigan Champs have maintained their place at the top of our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Across the Costas. Kevin’s side, Two for the Road are right behind them thanks to this week’s top Fantasy League Player Chelsea’s Edin Hazard who scored the 2nd Hat-Trick of the Season in the Premier League which gave him 21 points in this section. Liz has managed something that has never been done before in the Fantasy has both her teams are joint bottom of this League. Cookies Crew & Cookies Crew 61 are both 4 points behind Leo’s Powerblue Boys & Joanna’s Hugonauts F.C. Jin Dream Team are the new Leaders of our Champion of Champions League with a slight 1 point advantage over

Pauline’s Vodka Army, then comes Macca’s Albir Villains who are still in the mix. Dave’s team The Hatters are finding life difficult in this tough League and are struggling to keep up with the main-stream and have slipped to 22 points adrift of Gary’s Hammered Again at the bottom. Three teams go into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are our top scoring team John’s Tarazara who bagged 47 points and 2 teams who only scored the lowest total of 2 points,Big Tony & Micky’s Simply& Simply& Lovely. Last Month’s winner was Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans. Manager of the Month for September is being kindly sponsored by Darren & Scott at Sarita’s,top Restaurant in Albir who serve up a delicious Indian Cuisine in pleasant surroudings. With 2 weeks gone Nathan’s team The Boys Special are in pole position and are 4 points ahead of Keith’s Max & Paddy. Brad & Ants and Eric’s Peaky Blinders are also in the reckoning for this super meal for 2 at Sarita’s Restaurant. Mike’s Super Saints have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz when they climbed up the most places this week from 195th to 132nd. I’m pleased to report our website is well up and running smoothly thanks to Terry & Javi. All the Mini-Leagues are on the go and the Draw for our the Prelimanary Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition will soon be up on the website and will take place the weekend October 6th.

Impact of Brexit could be extremely significant to sports SPORT in Britain is awaiting with abated breath the outcome of talks surrounding Brexit - with football and horseracing just two concerned bodies. ANDREW

Andrew Atkinson In contrast to the cry of ‘Football’s Coming Home’ to England’s shores - in the wake of this summer’s World Cup in Russia - it could flip onto the other side of the coin in the Brexit talks. And the ‘Sport of Kings’ horseracing - is also looking to a positive outcome in the ‘deal’’no deal’ scenario facing the British Horseracing Authority. If the UK government chose to immediately put up borders and tariffs it would make it extremely difficult for thoroughbreds to move to compete on England’s

turf. The World’s greatest race, the Aintree Grand National, has been the focus of a ‘no-Brexit’ deal concern. The racing world awaits the Brexit talks outcome, with a deadline in March. A month ahead of the Grand National in 2019. It would be quite an impact and a threat to potentially Irish horses participating - Irish jockeys being able to compete in races in England - if it was a hard ‘no-deal’ Brexit. And it’s not just the Grand National - the cream of Flat racing Royal Ascot - along with NH Cheltenham Festival are among courses that attract horses from many countries outside the EU. Over 600 players played in the Premier League in recent seasons - with over half non-British. The majority, 208, were within the European Union. Approximately half of the Premier League players would need work permits, according to player agent Rachel Anderson. The same would apply to coaches. The House of Lords EU Home Affairs Committee has written to

the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Sport and Civil Society, raising issues about the potential impact of Brexit. Worries citing an end to free movement for EU sportspeople within sport in the United Kingdom. It’s not just the Premier League teams who could be affected with a ‘no-Brexit’ deal. Championship and lower echelon league clubs have concerns. One, Stoke City chairman Peter Coates, said: “I’m pessimistic about leaving.” A big fall in sterling since Brexit has lead to clubs digging deeper, in lumping out more money, in both transfer fees and wages. Post-Brexit restrictions on immigration have increased the premium on British players breaking into the Premier League. This comes at a time when Premier League clubs are lobbying the UK Government to exempt EU players from post-Brexit labour restrictions. Away from the playing side a plethora of Premier League managers are non-British, with top

clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea amongst others, that could be affected. Talks with DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) took place - before the referendum on Brexit - concerning the implications. The 2019 Grand National could well be without Irish jockeys - and horses - if the UK leaves the EU without a Brexit ‘deal’. The UK’s formal departure from the EU is scheduled for March 29, 2019. The British Horseracing Authority is concerned the Grand National could be affected in the event of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit - if the European Commission rejects UK’s hopes to retain the current process for transporting horses. Horseracing currently enjoys a tripartite agreement between Britain, Ireland and France, which allows free movement of horses between the countries. There are approximately 26,000 movements of thoroughbred horses each year between

the three countries, in place since the 1960s. The three-country agreement became enshrined in EU law when the UK and Ireland joined what was then the Common Market. Concerns cite it could fail to exist beyond Brexit - if the EU and Britain fail to negotiate a ‘deal’. Lord Jay, Chairman of the House of Lords EU Home Affairs Committee, said: “The sports industry in the UK is a huge market. “Many of our leagues and teams are internationally renowned brands and make a significant contribution both to the UK’s reputation overseas and to the national balance sheet.” Lord Jay added: “The evidence received suggests that for many sports, the impact of Brexit could be extremely significant. “Ending free movement from the EU could present both challenges and opportunities. It is clear that we need a proper analysis and a plan for how it is managed.”

AJ back in the ring this Saturday

This weekend sees one of the most anticipated matches of the year as Anthony Joshua takes on Alexander Povetkin this Saturday night at Wembley Stadium. The big Russian and Joshua are both Olympic champions, but the British fighter has more to lose as he puts his IBF, WBO,

IBO and WBA titles on the line against the mandatory challenger. Povetkin has only lost one of his 35 bouts and that was five years ago against Wladimir Klitschko at the peak of his powers. Joshua of course is undefeated, although less

experienced with only 22 fights. AJ will start as a firm favourite and if he wins as expected his next bout will probably be a unification battle with Deontay Wilder who holds the WBC belt. The match is due to start at around 11pm Spanish time and is live on Sky Box Office.

Pochettino loses his cool as Spurs slump to defeat

THE normally unflappable Mauricio Pochettino became the second manager in recent weeks to accuse journalists of disrespect after Jose Mourinho’s outburst earlier this month. The comments came after Spurs opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Inter Milan after throwing away a lead. The difference this time was that rather than accusing writers of disre-

specting himself, the manager’s criticism was aimed at their questioning of why Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld were left back in London. “You disrespect the players here, that showed better qualities than their opponent” he said, clearly annoyed with the line of questioning. On the pitch Tottenham looked to have all three points in the bag after a Christian Erik-

sen strike gave them a well deserved lead. However a resilient Inter scored twice in the last five minutes for a fortunate win. Elsewhere on the night Liverpool got off to a better start with a 3-2 defeat against PSG and Barcelona were quick off the blocks with a 4-0 demolition of PSV Eindhoven that included, almost inevitably, a Lionel Messi hat trick. Atletico Madrid beat Monaco 2-1 away.

Top golfer killed on the course A man has been arrested after one of Spain’s most promising young golfers was murdered this week. The tragedy began unfolding after 22 year old Celia Barquin Arozamena’s golf bag was found abandoned on a course in Ames, Iowa where she had been practising. Police started a search and later found her body; forensics confirmed she had been assaulted and killed. Shortly after a man named as Colin Daniel Richards, aged 22, was arrested and charged with Celia’s murder. Richards is described as a drifter who has an existing criminal record, including charges of violent conduct. Celia was born in the Cantabrian town of Puente San Miguel in 1996 but had moved to the US to attend Iowa State University on a golfing scholarship. She was regarded as one of the best female golfers to ever attend

the university and her amateur victories included this year’s European Ladies Amateur Championship. She would almost certainly have turned professional after leaving college had her career not been so tragically cut short. The Director of Sports at Iowa

University Jamie Pollard said “Celia had a contagious smile, a happy personality and all those who had the opportunity to meet her were fortunate”. The Spanish Olympic Committee said “We are deeply shocked by this tragedy. We are offering all our support and solidarity for the family of Celia Barquin and Spanish golf at such a hard time”.
