Beach backlash from disabled A L T H O U G H Alicante’s beaches were officially “open for business” from 15 June, disabled bathers and beach goers had to wait until the start of this month before they were able to enjoy the coast. The issue revolves around the late resolution of the tender process, a repeat of the 2017 season.

by Simon Russell

Even now the full tender has not been awarded and a small scale stop gap process has been put in place. A spokesman for opposition Ciudadanos talked about the town halls lack of sensitivity to people of functional diversity

saying “We cannot afford to give such a bad image to disabled people who have every right to enjoy our beaches in the peak season.” Services for the disabled include support with using the bathroom and entering the sea as well as a monitoring service for mentally handicapped beach users.

There’s art hanging in Tárbena’s historic outdoor washhouse. Tárbena Arts is hosting an art exhibit everyday from 21 July to 4 August 2018 from 11am to 8pm. Over 20 creative residents of Tárbena, Spanish and expats alike, will present their work in this unique setting in an exhibit called Es Llavadors. The opening party is Friday, 20 July, 7 to 10pm at the lavadero to kick off Tárbena’s Artesanal Fair. A resident artist of Tárbena, John Sunderland, conceived of the idea earlier in the year. He has a small studio opposite the laundry of the picturesque mountain village with stunning views of the Bernia Mountain and the Mediterranean. Everyday that he went to his studio to paint or carve a walking stick out of the local wood, he looked out at the little-used open air laundry and thought it would

make a fantastic stage for an art exhibit that would benefit the village and help attract visitors. When he put the idea forward to Tárbena’s Ayuntamiento, they enthusiastically embraced it and made it part of Tárbena’s annual fiestas; FIRA de Productes Gastronomics I Artesanals de Tárbena on 21 and 22 July 2018, their Semana Cultural from 2 to 4 August and the rest of their August fiestas until 9 August. A small informal group of local artists, professional and amateur, was formed called Tárbena Arts and with the help of the Tárbena council, the lavadero and nearby areas were prepared to house the show. The large group of artists will display their work for seven hours, 15 days straight, a huge undertaking. It’s expected the show will attract other creatives to join in, playing music and drums among other things. It’s hoped ideas

for creating a large mural on a newly renovated wall near the lavadero will develop, and perhaps begin to come to fruition during the exhibit and throughout Tárbena’s summer fiesta season. It’s going to be a “Happening” in Tárbena not to be missed; art will extend the range and appeal of the annual fiestas that include food, parades of music and drums,

an animal farmhouse, hand-woven esparto grass demonstration, bookbindery workshops, performances of folklore groups, family games and a potluck dinner. You can find more details on Tárbena’s Facebook page, ‘Ajuntament de Tárbena’. For more information contact Juan Carlos at juancarlos@tarbena.es.

The evening will cover important issues, including an introduction on services that the forest provides, problems of forest fires where urban and countryside meet, fire regulations, prevention measures, protocols for action in case of fire emergency, how to keep gardens clean and healthy and what to do to prevent forest fires. Adequate time will be allowed for questions and answers and group participation, with translators on hand to avoid confusion. There will also be a workshop for children, related to the prevention of forest fires and emergencies.

Take your doggie for a dip

With its extreme daytime temperatures and humid nights, summer can be a tough time for dogs. Sometimes all a dog needs is a cooling dip in the sea and luckily for them, there are nine beaches in the Alicante which legally allow dogs. Below is a full list of these beaches and coves, so pack a towel, a picnic and of course your dog and try them out:

Gardening on the Costa Blanca

Despite the well-meaning advice given in this and other gardening columns, local garden centres currently seem to be full of people buying expensive plants which they are going to put at the mercy of the increasingly hot and dry summer weather to come. As an alternative, why not try growing edible vegetables as a comparatively cheap exercise from which

you should get enjoyment in at least two ways? Buying plants from a garden centre, while not as cheap as growing from seed, at least cuts out the problem of growing far more plants than you can possibly use – a problem encountered by most of us who start from seed! You can still buy peppers – in a large number of varieties,(Sweet Peppers are normally large while the small ones, even when highly decorative, are often hot – sometimes very hot! So beware when adding them to your culinary masterpieces). Aubergines (berenjenas in Spanish) which make very decorative pot plants anyway, probably tomatoes and even strawberries are also available! It is possibly too late for lettuce as they prefer to be sown

in cool conditions but there many herbs such as basil currently available. All these are ideal for growing on balconies (preferably out of full sun) and you only need one or two plants - after all how many peppers or aubergines can you eat!

ideal when the plants start to flower as this will encourage fruit growth.

If your potatoes start to shoot before you have the chance to eat them, why not plant them instead. Plant one or two near the bottom of a big pot, cover with compost and then plant another couple and so on. Hopefully they will produce new spuds at each level. Thomson and Morgan, the seed suppliers, carried out experiments which satisfied them that this method (‘lasagne’ planting) produced the best results with the least effort. Incidentally, always plant tomatoes low down in a bigger plot as the stems will produce new roots into the fresh layer of compost which will better feed and support the plants.

You will normally need to move your purchases into a bigger pot, preferably as soon as possible – after making sure that they are well watered before taking them out of original container. Although you don’t get many plants offered in the multipot ‘flats’ so common in Britain, obviously growers try to keep their overheads down by saving on compost etc as much as possible thus making the plants very susceptible to drying out.Keep everything well watered and Experiment – it won’t well fertilised though which cost you much and you may fertiliser may well change very well get very pleasas they grow. Foreign demand for property in the Valencian Community, home to the Costa Blanca: Key numbers Q1 2018 www.spanishpropertyinsight.com How many foreigners bought property in the Valencian region in the first quarter of the year (the most recent data period)? What percentage of the market were they? Which provinces did they choose? What kind of homes did they buy? And how much did they spend? The following charts and tables give you the key numbers regards foreign demand for property in the Valencian Community in Q1 2018.

Foreign demand market share in the Valencian Community Foreign buyers were 26% of the market in the Valencian region in the first quarter of the year, with 5,2365 purchases inscribed in the Land Register. As a quarter of the market, foreigners are obviously crucial to the housing market in the region. When you break foreign demand down by province, a more nuanced pictures emerges. 80% of foreign demand goes to Alicante province, home to the North and South Costa Blanca. So, as far as foreign demand is concerned, the Valencian Region is really just Alicante and the Costa Blanca.

Foreign demand by province Why do so many foreign buyers head for Alicante’s Costa Blanca, and so few for the coast of Castellón province, known as the Orange Blossom Coast, or Costa del Azahar in Spanish? It has some wonderful beaches, and in many ways is more like the ‘real Spain’ than the Costa Blanca, and many foreign buyers like to think they want an authentic location, rather than a foreign ghetto. The main reason, I suspect, is Alicante’s powerful sales infrastructure built up over the last 50 years. There’s nothing they don’t know in Alicante about selling property to foreign buyers, and they certainly know a few dirty tricks. And, as you can see from the next chart, foreign buyers in Alicante are buying a much larger proportion of villas than buyers in the other provinces. Alicante has a reputation as the place to get a cheap villa in Spain.

Foreign budgets by province How much do foreigners spend on property in the Valencian Community, in the different provinces? Very little in Castellón in turns out, partly because property there is cheaper, and partly because buyers there are more likely to be economic rather than weather migrants. PROVINCE Valencia Castellon Alicante

NEW SERIES. At London’s Royal Albert Hall, the new season launches with a feast for the eyes and ears in the world premiere of Five Telegrams, with music by Anna Meredith and stunning digital projections by 59 Productions marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. The all-British programme also features Vaughan Williams’ pre-war choral masterpiece Toward the Unknown Region, along with Holst’s evergreen Proms favourite The Planets - the first piece Mars, Bringer of War, famously anticipates the onset of mechanistic warfare. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, is joined by the combined forces of the BBC Symphony Chorus, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble.

Alfaz Fantasy Football League Presentation

Last week the presentation for the 24th Alfaz Fantasy Football League took place at the Bar Code in Alfaz. For the 3rd year running, we had 6 different winners. Wayne’s team Two Years Running Maybe won our Golden Boot League, Raquel’s team Mrs.Max & Paddy won our F.A.Cup League, Pauline’s Vodka Army romped away with our Mark Carter Ladies Section, Lee’s Pineapple Chunks won our very popular K.O.Cup Competition while Wade’s team Alli Barber won our Junior League by the small margin of 3 points over young Robbie’s team Tea & Busquets.

The overall winner was Darren whose team Daz XI finished top of the pile by a comfortable 76 points courtesy of 2 of his Players Harry Kane & Mo Salah who between them they notched up 493 Fantasy League points. The Brochure and Players List will soon be available after the World Cup finishes. The 25th anniversary A.F.F.L. will commence on Saturday 11th August so don’t miss out on this great Competition. With the World Cup going on it will give our future Fantasy League Managers a chance to do so scouting for next Season.

Join The Next Alfaz Fantasy Football League

Unfortunatly football is not coming home, however the 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League which starts on Saturday 11th August. Hopefully, the Brochure & Players List will be available in the next couple of weeks. To celebrate 25 Years of the A.F.F.L. we will be going all out to make it the best ever

with special prizes throughout the Season. The game is easy to play and in the next few weeks we will be setting out the format on these pages and also the venues where you will be able to collect the Brochure & Players List. Photo’s of last Seasons Winners are on this page with

Las Ramblas Golf & Social Society Report

The week began with the dreaded ‘Yellow Peril’. In teams of four, each player taking it in turn to play the ‘yellow ball’ which scores double points, the next best two scores are added to this. However, lose the yellow

ball and you’ll only score normal points from that moment onwards. By a whisker of just 3 points, the winning team with 143 were Geoff Biggerstaff, Racheal Leckey, Terry Field and Nigel Price. Well done to Nigel for scoring 8 points on the 16th. Wednesday was our individual Stableford and I had the privilege of playing alongside Reg Akehurst who was celebrating his 89th birthday! I don’t suppose there are many people who can boast they have shot a score which is less

than their age during their playing career! In top spot with 41 points was Brian Staines and runner up with 39 was John Shervell. The next three places, all scoring 38 points, were myself, Alan Douglas and Hendrick Oldenziel. Only three ‘2’s this week, Geoff Biggerstaff, John Shervell and yours truly. And onto Friday which was a 6x6x6 competition. Best single score to count on the front six, best two on the second six and finally the best three scores to count on the final six holes. With 82 points (and winning on count back)

were Geoff Biggerstaff, Terry Field, Rod Doel and the fictitious Albert. A special mention goes to John (Constable) Shervell, our resident art teacher, who managed a hole in one on the 14th. If a picture could paint a thousand words it would be the look on John’s face when he was later given the bar bill! Thanks for the beer John. Also worthy of our congratulations was Benedicte Kruse for winning twelve months free membership at Lo Romero GC in a Spanish Federation competition at the weekend.

the overall winner of A.F.F.L. Darren McHattie proudly holding the much sort after Trophy. He is the 1st Chelsea Fan to win our prestigious Trophy. At the time of going to Press England have reached the World Cup Semi-Finals and I’m hoping they have reached the Final by the time

you read this. One thing for sure is that the World Cup is definitely staying in Europe. Don’t forget to visit our website to keep up with all the latest Fantasy news and you can also go to our Facebook page to pass comments on the forthcoming Season and view all the photos of our Presentation Day.

PEGO Texas Scramble

On a beautiful morning we assembled 36 members and guests to take part in a very enjoyable 2 Man Texas Scramble. The course was just newly cut, and the greens were impeccable. We only had three guests today, and they were Paul and Stephen Murphy and Nick Park.. In the competition the winners were as follows:1st Place with 67, was the team of Shaun O’Gorman and John Nicol 2nd Place with 68 was the team of Malcolm Wise and Peter Brown 3rd Place with 68 was the team of Paul Sankey and Graham Borley

meters, and at Hole 16, nearest the pin was Russ Peters at 4.00 meters. There were five 2’s today, and they were by Paul Trigwell, Russ Peters, Malcolm cannon, Ian Robertson and Shaun O’Gorman The Balls in the Water prize was guessed today and the lucky number was 91, and the winner was John Evans. If there is a better way to spend four and a half hours, nobody has told me about it. Next week, which will be our third last game of the year, we are playing a Singles Stableford Competition, so should you want to join us at Pego, please contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@ Nearest the pin at Hole No 3 gmail.com, and we would love was Shaun O’Gorman with 2.05 to see you.

El Cid Gender Trophy The first 9 ends showing the Ladies in the lead by 12 shots. With the decision taken to give all who entered a game, the back 9 saw 2 of the Ladies teams change and all of the Men’s teams change in at least one position. After 14 ends it seemed like the changes had not helped the men with the deficit increasing to 18 shots. But after 16 the deficit was down to 15. WOW! What a last 2 ends

with the men only conceding 2 shots but scoring 25! Result Men 102 Ladies 94. One proud team Captain, Paul Trunchion aided by his new megaphone! Thanks to the Ladies team and their Captain Bernie Isaacs for a great day. No doubt revenge is on their minds for next year already. And thanks also to the staff at El Cid for supplying drinks during the game and having their bowlers special menu available afterwards.
