No longer open all hours Confused customers were the first to notice shops remained closed on Sundays after new laws across Valencia rang up changes. Commercial premises will no longer be able to open continuously on Sundays or on fiesta days, the regional government has ruled. On 19th February the amended law was published in the official gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana and came into force on 25th February. The move is aimed at a “reconciliation of family and work life” said the Ministry of the Economy after the law received a green light from politicians sitting in Les Corts Valencianes. And it said the change came after agreement was reached between small businesses, supermarkets and consumer groups. The accord only allows opening a set number of days from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday and from June 15th to the first Sunday of the January sales The five main tourist areas of

by Jack Troughton

Valencia and the entire city of Alicante will allow opening over 38 Sundays and public holidays. Municipalities declared to have the greatest influx of tourists (ZGAT) will be allowed to open 40 days over the same period and those listed as having a partial ZGAT can open 28 days – for the rest, 11 days are allowed.

Examples of the former were given as Finestrat, Torrevieja, Alborache, Alfaz del Pi, Benissa (coast), Orihuela (coast) and Pilar de la Horadada (coast). Examples of partial ZGAT are Altea, Benidorm, Benicassim, Santa Pola, Segorbe, Ondara and Calpe. The law is expected to be enforced by local police and people are advised to check with their local town hall to see how it affects them locally. However, convenience stores – with premises under 300 square metres – are expected to remain open.

Wetter and colder last month

ANYONE who was in the Valencian Community will not be surprised to find that it was officially wetter and colder than usual in February this year. The Spanish Meteorological Office’s statistics said that there was just under 50 litres of rainfall over the month, 30%

by Matthew Richards

more than the February average over the last three decades. The average temperature of 7.2 degrees meant that it was also the third coldest February across Valencia in the last quarter of a century. There was plenty of snow around

too, with thirteen days of the white stuff, especially inland during the first week of the month. The Met Office said that this was caused by the run of cold days over that period. The warmest day of the period hit 25 degrees in Sumacarcer while the coldest was the -2.3

degrees registered in the towns of Jalance and Ademuz. The wet winter was to some degree the weather correcting itself after there being practically zero rainfall in October to December; the rains started in January, continuing throughout much of last month.

Lawyer put forward Going nuts as mayor THE Partido Popular in Javea have confirmed their candidate for the 2019 mayoral elections in the Marina Alta town. She is to be Rosa Cardona, a local lawyer who lives, works and was raised in Javea. The announcement was made at a special meeting on 2 March attended

by Simon Russell

by the PP’s Regional President Isabel Bonig and Provincial President Jose Ciscar. The party have said that they aim to unite the centre right opposition in the town to regain power which is currently held by the left wing.

POLICE are looking for a motive as to why a man was approached and beaten up while buying chestnuts at a stall in Valencia City. The 49-year-old was punched at least five times and injured badly enough to require hospitalisation where he was diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone. Apparently the attacker did not say a word during the vicious assault. Police were later able to trace the perpetrator of the

crime and he has been arrested and charged with assault. The man has no police record and has not given any motive for the attack.

Health and Solidarity Don’t waste THE IES Number 1 secondary school in Javea is holding a Solidarity Day on 28 March, with the focus on physical activity plus general health and well-being. There are a variety of different activities throughout the day, most organised by the centres PE Department. These include a charity race, stands about healthy diet and living as well as music and fundraising activities.

by Matthew Richards

In addition to the educational and fun side of the event, the school will be raising money for Save the Children, specifically an on-going project to help impoverished children in South Sudan. As well as the pupils and school staff there will also be volounteers from the Red Cross, Civil Protection and Local Police attending.

that waste EL Poble Nou de Benitatxell town hall continues with its pledge to improve their recycling record and is introducing special recycling points for organic waste. The seven underground bins separate organic waste from other recycling and will be coloured brown so people can identify them. Around 44% of household rubbish is organic and many people still throw this in the general basura bins where it ends up in landfill sites. However it is usually

by Simon Russell

recyclable for compost, fuel etc. Organic waste includes fruit and vegetable peelings, carcasses of fish or meat and even coffee grounds but not cigarette butts or sanitary products. The new bins are being paid for with a grant from Alicante Council and will be located at Plaza de las Pesqueras, the Les Fonts and Los Molinos urbanisations, Avenida de Valencia plus Calles Mercado, Constitucion and Assegador.

Sick thief raids crash

THE chief of one of the rescue crews involved in attending the scene of a triple fatality in January has revealed that while his men were trying to save lives someone stole items from their

fire-engine. The tragic accident occurred on 27 January and a number of vehicles were stopped at the side of the road while the chaotic scene was attended.

It is believed that someone from one of these vehicles took the opportunity to steal tools, including a pump and cutting equipment, from the engine. At one stage the rescue teams feared that a baby was

trapped in the wreckage. Thankfully there was no infant, but it is thought that while the truck was briefly unattended the thief took the items. The Guardia Civil have been notified of the theft.

Gourmet thieves T

WO men stopped by the Guardia Civil in Calpe were unable to explain why they had several hundred worth of gourmet foods in their car and where it had come from. The two Romanians had been asked by the Guardia to show documentation relating to their vehicle and, when questioned about the food in the back and boot, could not give a proper reply. The police made enquiries and it transpired that a gourmet supermarket

by Simon Russell

in Calpe had had €500 worth of food stolen that day, including beef, steaks, pate, smoked salmon and alcohol. It appears the men purchased some goods legitimately and, when queuing to pay, were able to steal premium items close to the checkout counter and hide them under their clothing. The pair, whohave a long string of similar offence to their names, have been arrested and charged.

Sistine Chapel enjoys a renaissance

THE high Renaissance art of the world-famous Sistine Chapel is the subject of the next presentation of the Arts Society Marina Alta on Thursday April 5th. At the Salones Canor, Teulada, Daniel Evans explains how the ceiling was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 – an accepted cornerstone work of the period. However, the ceiling’s various painted elements form part of a larger scheme of decoration within the Chapel, including the large fresco ‘The Last Judgement’ on

by Jack Troughton

the sanctuary wall, also by Michelangelo. There are also wall paintings by several leading painters of the late 15th century including Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Pietro Perugino. Daniel Evans is a teacher with a passion for all things Italian. Formerly Head of History of Art at Wycombe Abbey School, he is now Deputy Head of the Sixth Form at Cheltenham College. He has been lecturing since 2001, and spent

nine years working as a senior lecturer, tutor and tour guide for Art History Abroad, and was the British winner of the World Guide of the Year Awards in 2008 - alongside his lectures and special interest days he also organises educational study trips for societies to a range of destinations in Italy. Doors open at 10am and people should be seated by 10.55am for the start at 11am. Visitors are welcome for a payment of €12. For more details of the society visit www. marinaaltaarts.com or contact membership@ marinaaltaarts.com.

Bike flasher fined IN recent years more and more cyclists have taken to using flashing lights while on their bicycles, something they believe increases their visibility to motorists and therefore their safety. However there is now clarification needed around use of these devices after a cyclist near Madrid was fined for using one. Former bank worker and keen cyclist Gonzalo Lopez, aged 78, was stopped by the Guardia Civil cycling along a river bank while using a flashing security light and issued with the penalty. The paperwork clearly states the reason for the fine and Gonzalo felt he had no choice but to pay, with prompt payment reducing the penalty to €100. However Spanish cyclists

by Simon Russell

have taken to the internet to protest with 26,500 online signatures collected so far

to request confirmation that use of the lights is legal – and if not to change the laws to help protect bikers who already feel vulnerable on

the roads. They also point out that the devices are sold in shops specifically for this purpose, a misleading action if they are not legal.

Women’s week Lunch for Aquarian Star Sign Members THE municipality of Teulada-Moraira began celebrations for Women’s Week on 8 March which will continue until 13 March. The week opened with the reading of the official manifesto outside the town hall on Thursday and on 9 March there is a storytelling event at the library followed by an art exhibition in the Sala de Exposiciones, with musical accompaniment by the soprano singer Claire-Marie. Tomorrow (10 March) there is a female padel tournament and on 11 March there will be a Solidarity March for the AECC Teulada cancer

charity. On Monday there are lectures and workshops in the Salon de Plenos (in the town hall) on the subject of women’s power today. The event finishes on Tuesday 13 March with a laughter therapy workshop at the Espai la Seneta Moraira. Earlier this month Councillor Rosana Caselles presented the programme of events to the press and public, stressing the importance of the week in focusing on local female’s rights and full integration into society.

If you are born in the dark winter months, you are always looking for something to celebrate and what better excuse for a luncheon than to celebrate birthdays under the Aquarian star sign (late January to late February).

by U3a

On Tuesday 20th February a small group of members born under this star sign got together at LÓrenga restaurant in Benissa to celebrate their recent birthdays.

Unfortunately the weather and winter sickness reduced the numbers who managed to attend, but that did not stop us from raising a glass to wish ourselves a happy birthday and to enjoy the selection of luncheon choices put on by the team at LÓrenga. Next year we plan to give members notice of our plans earlier, in the hope of getting more people born under the BEST star sign to join us. Our thanks to Brigid who took on the responsibility of making the arrangements, despite a late call to visit the UK in the lead up. What´s your star sign? Why not get your group

together and do something to celebrate – it doesn´t have to be just lunch it could be a trip to one of the beautiful villages or coastal resorts, especially as the weather gets better. Spring Is the Best Time for Mountain Walking A

t this time of year the Spanish weathermen can never agree from day to day if it will stay fine all day. Never mind, believe me the daffodils in my garden are telling me Spring is here and that we have kicked the tail end of the Beast of the East and that we can look forward to perfect weather for mountain walking, sunny but not too hot and not windy. The Monday Walking Group has made a start between the rain showers but are now looking for new members to join them

by U3a

in enjoying the sights and views from spectacular walks. During February they completed their first walk at Parcent, when the almond blossoms were at their best, and with the weather getting better as the month passed for the last walk, Lliber to Senija, they enjoyed clear blue skies with a cool wind, ideal walking weather. They enjoyed it so much that they added an extension to have a short break in the square in Senija and anafter-walk drink in the square in Lliber.

You remember your New Year promise, to get out and about more or to get fitter, so now is the time sign up with Paul and Jan (paulleniston@ hotmail.com) and fulfill all your dreams in enjoying the Spanish countryside. Walks are usually 5 hours, including a picnic lunch and one or two water stops. Distance varies depending on the amount of ascent involved. However, anyone reasonably fit and with some walking experience should be able to manage them with ease, and when you´ve finished you will be really

pleased with yourself and be able to smile as you enjoy the after-walk drink. For further information on U3A Vall del Pop check our website [http:// u3avalldelpop.com]. Screening means to look for signs of diseases and conditions before there are symptoms. It helps to identify health issues at an early stage leading to earlier treatment, minimising or avoiding complications and even saving lives. This is just as important for women as it is for men but we know from research studies that many men will not go anywhere near a Doctor unless dragged there or blackmailed!! So all you men, if you are offered health screening take advantage of it! Depending upon where you live you will have access to different types of screening but do remember virtually all kinds of screening are available privately. If you have concerns about family history of certain conditions have a chat with your Family Doctor. Some examples of health screening are: Blood pressure Cholesterol Diabetes Bowel cancer Prostate cancer Aortic aneurysm

paying off? Some things are obvious; we all have access to weighing scales for example but are you sure your heart is healthy? How do you know you are not diabetic? Not all health problems give us warnings or have symptoms that we would necessarily take much notice of. So what can you do?

Think about it.......You wouldn’t drive a car for 50 years and expect nothing to go wrong with it! Checking brake hoses can save you from injury, death or disability! Now apply that same logic to your body. Screening for the above does not just improve prognosis for cancers and help prevent a fatal ruptured aneurysm but also helps avoid strokes, heart attacks, kidney and eye disease and even amputations! So, seriously think about screening tests. (See March Special Offer at the Family Medical Centre, Albir – 20% off PSA tests).

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 29

All editions of “Gardening on the Costa Blanca” can be found at www.weekender.news/CBGC or visit www.costablancagardeners.weebly.com

for more information.

(We will return to the problem of feeding the world another time.) 1. Planting trees with weak wood. Schinus molle (False Pepper tree) and Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven - glorious name which unfortunately only refers to ‘reaching to the heavens’) are examples of fast growing trees with weak wood. Beware of any tree that grows 5 feet in a year they’re usually weak! This leads to messy twigs all over your lawn after a breezy day and perhaps bigger branches after strong winds. The False Pepper Tree is, however, widely and effectively used as a street tree locally. Yes, the pink seeds are the “pink peppers” in those mixes of coloured peppers you can buy, so you can safely use them in cooking! 2. Planting trees too close to your home. All big trees start as little trees! Araucaria ( Norfolk Island Pine) will eventually get

well over 50 feet high, so don’t plant them 5 feet from your home. Many large trees will eventually develop big roots that buckle patios and driveways, so don’t plant them right next to concrete. 3. ‘Lawnmower Blight’ on trees. Lawn mowers and trimmers damage tree bark, which can kill a tree. The live tissues in a tree trunk that suck water up and transport sugars down are just inside the bark. Damaging those tissues hurts a tree just like hardening arteries hurts people and can eventually be fatal. 4. Buying a plant without checking suitability. Of course this doesn’t matter for annuals, but you should check on everything else. Every Garden Centre is full of plants that are not appropriate for the area, so beware. 5. Planting a large climber

on a small trellis. Wisteria, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, known as Virginia creeper, climbing hydrangea and many types of honeysuckle are huge, vigorous plants. Wisteria grows 25 to 30 feet or more. Climbing hydrangea can get 80 feet long. Vigorous means that these plants will work really hard to reach their full potential, so you’re in for a lot of pruning if you try to keep them to 10 feet. Choose a small vine (like clematis) for a small area instead. 6. Allowing climbers to climb up the sides of your home - having a climber on the side of your home is like laying out a welcome mat for insects. The tendrils or suckers that climbers use to hold themselves up can pull apart your brick or blocks and ivy (and others) will leave brown marks behind if you ever

pull them off. So put your climbers on a trellis or the fence. N.B. Bougainvillea is not a climber as you may find out after heavy rain! 7. Planting aggressive groundcovers in your flower bed. A plant makes a good groundcover if it spreads quickly. That’s bad news for its neighbours if they’re less vigorous and you’re not willing to referee frequently with a spade. Use groundcovers with care.

Brexit impact on British demand for property in Spain: The story so far The British voted to leave the EU in a referendum in June 2016. What impact has the referendum result had on British demand for Spanish property so far? Surprisingly little. The number of British buyers dropped significantly in the second half of 2016 after the referendum, but has been recovering since then (chart above). In yearly terms, British demand declined for five quarters between Q3 2014 and Q3 2017, but then started growing again in Q4 20017. The British are still by far the biggest group of foreign buyers of Spanish property, almost double the next biggest group – the French. Agents and developers tell

me they have seen an increase in British buyers with budgets above €400,000, and a fall in numbers in the middle market between €200,000 and €400,000. Some buyers in the middle market are trading down, bolstering the lower end. I’ve heard one theory that Brits with financial resources are getting money out of the UK and into European assets like Spanish property before Brexit really bites. There is a correlation between British demand for Spanish property and the strength of the pound, as you can see from the chart below. But whilst the pound has fallen below its level in 2013, British demand has been far more resilient. A weaker pound means that some British buyers will be trading down, but in volume

terms British demand has been surprisingly unaffected by the referendum result.

TREASURED IMAGE OF JESUS NAZARENO CARRIED DOWN TO HISTORIC CENTRE Hundreds of residents of Javea carrying lighted candles, some walking barefoot, accompanied the town’s treasured image of Jesús Nazareno on Sunday evening in the traditional “baixada”, the descent to the heart of the historic centre where it will sit inside the church of San Bartolomé for the next eight weeks over the Easter period and during the fiestas held in its honour at the end of April and beginning of May. The image, the original of which arrived in the town more than 250 years as a gift from the Duchess of Medinacelí, was carried proudly on the shoulders of devotees young and old, a special honour for those chosen to do so. It’s not a long journey from the iconic blue-domed chapel of Calvario where the image sits for much of the year but it’s carried out in increasing darkness, despite the way being lit by several hundred torches carried by welldressed residents. The devotion to this treasured image of the Christ is almost unique

in a country that has strong Marian traditions - “Spain, the Land of Mary” - and especially across the lands of the former Kingdom of Valencia which adopted the Marian devotion of the Crown of Aragon. The image arrived in Javea in October 1767. Legend has is that its original destination was Dénia, the Dukes of Medinaceli having shipped it from Sevilla in the south, but stormy seas prevented the vessel carrying it from rounding Cabo de San Antonio and it was decided the land the image in Xàbia. And here it remained. The story is a popular one that confirms the long and sometimes bitter rivalry between the two towns. Others insist that the image was always intended for Javea as a gift of thanks for the town’s congratulations on the birth of the Duchess of Medinaceli’s first child. Sadly much of the archival documentation about the image was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. As was the original image, set ablaze in the

Placeta del Convent; a replacement was created after the war and in 1967, on the 200th anniversary of its arrival in Javea, it was declared perpetual mayor of the town and the baton of office lies at its feet. As the town band played, the procession made its way slowly down the hill, stopping regularly to rest increasingly sore shoulders and swap positions. Ahead, the image of Mary, Mother of Christ, was also being carried on the shoulders of the devoted. As the bells of the church rang out across the valley, the first image was carefully carried into the church to be welcomed by generous applause. Not long afterwards, the image of Jesús Nazareno arrived in the church square where the men took a well-deserved breather before lifting the image back onto their shoulders for the last time and carrying it up the steps of San Gill to the door where they were forced to lower it to almost knee level to get the image through the opening and into the church. Once

again there was great applause as the image was carried to the front of the congregation and carefully lifted into position where it will remain for the next two months until May 3rd when it will be carried back up the hill to the chapel of Calvario at the end of the fiestas in its honour.

But this won’t be the first time. At sunrise on Good Friday it will be carried up the Via Crucis to the chapel and back down again. Later on the same day, as the sun dips towards the horizon, it will form part of the solemn procession around the historic centre.

OCEANOGRAPHIC FOUNDATION PRESENTS FIRST RESULTS OF MARINE DIVERSITY T

he Valencian Oceanographic Foundation visited Javea this week to present the first results of its study into the marine biodiversity of the precious seabed off the coast of the municipality, a project to raise awareness of its huge importance and the need for its conservation. Representatives from the Foundation outlined its initial findings in a special presentation at the Ayuntamiento de Javea which included major proposals to make local people aware of the wealth of marine life hidden beneath the waves and how important it is to preserve it. Leocadia G. Bartual, the Director-General of the Foundation, joined with project director Francisco Torner to present their preliminary report to mayor JosĂŠ Chulvi

and representatives from several municipal departments and the direct impact of marine diversity in the area on the town’s socioeconomic activity. It was explained that the selection of Javea as the centre of this study was not a random choice but was motivated by the fact that, together with the Illes Columbretes, the sea off the coast of the municipality hosts some of the greatest biodiversity along the Valencian coast in an area which has a lot of pressure from tourism. In addition, the Ayuntamiento de Javea has demonstrated a willingness to commit to sustainable tourism and to the conservation of natural heritage when making decisions. The project (which covers the coast from Cap de Sant Antoni to Punta de Moraira) has a scientific role at an ecological level. Three

inspection dives have been made to inspect the seabed, take samples of the Posidonia Oceania seagrass which is endemic to the Mediterranean and inspect the impact left by vessels anchoring along the coast during the busy summer months. In additional the study has evaluated the socioeconomic aspect to place a value on the marine biodiversity of the area and establish what its loss would mean, both for the wellbeing of the local people as well as for basic services. The next phase will be educational to highlight the results of the study to social agents and involve them in the conservation and control of marine biodiversity. This sill be achieved through such campaigns as exhibitions, documentaries and discussions in schools.

Top Prize Money on the Costa won at El Cid Competition 40 members and guests competed in a Stableford competition on a very short course! Most of the tee boxes were under repair so the male members found themselves playing their 2nd shots from some very different places, in some cases they were too close to the green! High scores were expected and because of this we were not disappointed. The best score of the day came from Scotsman Jim Imrie, scoring 41

points playing of 5 handicap. Apart from the tee boxes the course was in good condition but the greens for most of us proved to be a little tricky, that is unless your name happens to be Bill Wylie who managed to drop his tee shot 3 ft. from the pin on his N.T.P. GOLDEN OLDIES KEEP SWINGING ONE of the highlights of Europe’s golfing calendar this year will be in Benidorm when the Costa Blanca Senior Masters event comes to the city in November. The international event is part of the prestigious European Senior Circuit which is made up of professionals over the age of 50, many of them household names, including Miguel Angel Jiminez who was at the presentation event held to announce the details. The tournament will

by Simon Russell

be staged at the Melia Vilaitaina Golf Club between 26 November and 1 December and the normally quiet period for visitors can expect to see a boost in tourism as a result. Mayor Toni Perez made the announcement last week, accompanied by other councillors and representatives of the Senior Tour and the Melia Golf Resort. The mayor said that the tournament is a perfect fit for Benidorm tourism

and promotes golf in the area, an activity which generated €440 million across Alicante province in 2017, creating around 10,000 jobs. The city is trying to secure the event for at least the next three years, hoping Benidorm can eventually become the golf capital of the Costa Blanca. He went on to point out that golfers spend on average 30 to 40% more than the average tourist who visits the resort.

In the 76th. minute and from a penalty scrum Rivero crowned a brilliant match touching down and with the Jara conversion it was 15-22. The home were desperate to get a result but the La Vila defence held up well. Their next match is at home to third placed Alcobendas and is a must win for La Vila as it would cement their first division place. Only 2 points separates La Vila from the next 2 highest teams so if they can stop giving away the ball via line-outs and penalties, avoid yellow cards and make the try conversions they must be in with a chance having gone down
