No longer open all hours Confused customers were the first to notice shops remained closed on Sundays after new laws across Valencia rang up changes. Commercial premises will no longer be able to open continuously on Sundays or on fiesta days, the regional government has ruled. On 19th February the amended law was published in the official gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana and came into force on 25th February. The move is aimed at a “reconciliation of family and work life” said the Ministry of the Economy after the law received a green light from politicians sitting in Les Corts

by Jack Troughton

Valencianes. And it said the change came after agreement was reached between small businesses, supermarkets and consumer groups. The accord only allows opening a set number of days from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday and from June 15th to the first Sunday of the January sales The five main tourist areas of Valencia and the entire city of Alicante will allow opening over 38 Sundays and public holidays. Municipalities declared to have the greatest influx of tourists (ZGAT) will

be allowed to open 40 days over the same period and those listed as having a partial ZGAT can open 28 days – for the rest, 11 days are allowed. Examples of the former were given as Finestrat, Torrevieja, Alborache, Alfaz del Pi, Benissa (coast), Orihuela (coast) and Pilar de la Horadada (coast). Examples of partial ZGAT are Altea, Benidorm, Benicassim, Santa Pola, Segorbe, Ondara and Calpe. The law is expected to be enforced by local police and people are advised to check with their local town hall to see how it affects them locally. However, convenience stores – with premises under 300 square metres – are expected to remain open.

Altea Jihadist recruiter pleads guilty An Altea man has accepted his involvement in a jihadist recruitment cell and spreading propoganda via social media. The defendant pleaded guilty to the crimes, so he could avoid imprisonment by repatriation for a period of ten years. Anouer Merabet, who was arrested in October 2016, at his home in Altea and fellow defendant Abdelillah Migou from Malaga, appeared before the National Court last week, charged with incitement to terrorist activity and recruitment of islamist fighters via facebook. Migou, allegedly used several social media profiles to spread messages of hatred and indoctrination, with the aim of recruiting fighters and had links to terrorist cells based in Syria and Morocco. Police claimed facebook posts stating ‘Forgive me mother, I love Jihad and my religion calls me to defend the servants’ and ‘Paradise is

not obtained free, but through mortars, rpg, dogma, automatic kalishnikovs and tnt grenades’, attributed to the defendent were inciting potential recruits to commit terrorist activities leading to killings and their own death. Prosecuting officer, Teresa Sandoval, asked for a prison sentence of four years for

Migou, on charges of terrorist integration. She asked for a similar sentence for Merabet, plus a further year’s detention and a fine of €2478 on drugs charges. The court heard that when arresting officers raided the Altea home of Merabet, who they described as a ‘virtual charismatic leader’, they also found 400 grams of drugs with a street value of €2477.

AirBnb hits Benidorm hotel bookings by Andy Mansell

showed a 150% increase in accommodation offered through these online booking sites, from around 400 to over 1000 houses, apartments and rooms available to rent, scattered throughout the

city. Figures showed that the average amount of people per booking was 4.7, which suggests in August of last year, the busiest month on the Benidorm Calendar, almost 100,000 extra tourists visited the city, using unregulated businesses. AirBnb, started in the USA ten years ago as a way for people to rent out rooms in their homes for overnight stays, at rates often

drastically lower than traditional accommodation and rapidly became a global phenomenon. Hosbec figures show many of the unregulated bookings are in zones of Benidorm not considered as traditional tourist areas, such as residential blocks and more deprived zones. It also showed the bookings predominantly came from domestic clients, visiting from cities across Spain, already familiar with homestays. In addition to fears of significant loss in revenues, Hosbec also expressed concerns over quality and safety standards in the unregulated

A report suggests holiday visits to Benidorm booked through unregulated operators could amounted to around â‚Ź8 million in 2017. Hosbec, the trade association representing regulated hotels and tourist apartments in the city, looked at information provided by data analysis specialists AirDna which highlighted a substantial growth in bookings through online specialists, such as AirBnb and HomeAway. The report, analysing data collected from June 2016 to December 2017,

properties, as they are never checked using official guidelines. Their report also showed that almost 60% of people offering unregulated accomodation in the city, were marketing more than one property, suggesting many were conducting a business oblivious to relevant authorities. The association is pressing national and regional government to force companies such as AirBnb to release details of their business, as they fear the phenomenon is only set for future growth.

Surrounding businesses were the blast epicentre this week. The incident closed while emergency services attended occurred at mid-morning last Tuesday when the scene with the fear of further explosions eyewitnesses said that a blast happened being their main concern. Specialist equipment initially showed high levels of carbon monoxide and gas, complicating the situation further and the road was also cut off to traffic, causing chaos in the local area. However the fire crews declared the area safe after about an hour and most businesses were able to return to normal. The injuries of the man, who was in the restaurant where the explosion happened, are said to not be serious.

New arrivals swoop in TERRA Natura in Benidorm has four new arrivals, a raven and three birds of prey. The feathered friends were all previously housed at a bird rescue shelter in Seville but have been moved to their new home on the Costa Blanca to create space needed at the Andalucian shelter. Terra Natura was glad to take the new arrivals which, as well as the raven, are a kite, buzzard and tawny owl. While all the birds are

classed as endangered in Spain, the kites are particularly rare sights in the wild and the new arrival will form part of the parks social awareness programme. This contributes to improving the conservation of birds of prey in Spain and helping those that have been abandoned or mistreated as was the case with the raven, a family pet that was kept in unsuitable conditions.

A rainy night for running in Benidorm

The rain in Spain fell mostly on the athletes who braved torrential downpours to compete in last Saturday’s Benidorm Half Marathon and 10k race. The popular annual event, known as the night marathon because of it’s early evening starting time, attracted a field of over two thousand runners for the two distances which were run in atrocious weather conditions. Winner of the men’s event, Dutchman Edwin de Vries, posted a time of 1.08:15, a mere twenty four seconds ahead of runner up Andrew Davies from the UK, who finished on 1.08:39. By contrast, the women’s race was dominated by UK runners, with Elinor Kirk (1.20:14) winning and

by Andy Mansell

Lauren Wilson finishing second with 1.27:08. Best performances by local athletes were third place for Sonia Tirado of Benidorm Athletics Club, with a time of 1.32:20 in the women’s event, whilst Juan Antonio Cantos was the fastest local man with a time of 1.21:41. Ann Selby was the fastest UK runner in the 10k race, with a second place finish and a time of 0.40:47. Race winners at 10k were Severino Felipe (0.32:17) in the men’s event and Yesica Mas (0.36:30) in the women’s. Around half the total of entries this year were from foreign runners, with the majority of these coming from Britain.

Albir cycle lane Nordic exchange completed by Andy Mansell

Bike enthusiasts in Albir now have a dedicated route leading from beachfront to the iconic lighthouse situated in the Sierra Gelada National Parc. The new cycle lane, recently completed at a cost of over 600,000 euros, was officially checked and passed for use, by Alfaz del Pi mayor Vicente Arques and planning officer Toni Such. The route, will take cyclists from close to the famous anchor statue on the beach, via the cliffside road, directly up to the car park at the entrance to the national park and on to the lighthouse, a distance of around 3.5 kilometres.

Bike users taking the completed route will have priority over motorists, as the cycle lane sits directly in the centre of the road, with limiters controlling the speed of traffic. In addition to the three metre wide lane, the work also included renovation of basic infrastructures and the installation of low level LED street lighting, designed to save energy and reduce light pollution in a zone of the town designated as an area of outstanding beauty. Vicente Arques was keen to stress the importance of sustainability and efficiency involved in future works within the municipality.

THE only volunteer centre opened up by the Norwegian government outside of Norway is based in l’Alfas del Pi, and a delegation from the Scandinavian country came to see how things are done there. The Frivilligsentralen was set up seven years ago and now has 200 volounteers

helping people in the area. Three people from the centres Norwegian counterpart visited and saw how the work with the young and other social projects was carried out. The centre is not just aimed at the sizeable Norwegian community in the municipality but also other residents from Spain and elsewhere, dependant on their needs. The government in Norway subsidises the work done, while the volounteers also collaborate closely with the Alfas town hall.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 29

All editions of “Gardening on the Costa Blanca” can be found at www.weekender.news/CBGC or visit www.costablancagardeners.weebly.com

for more information.

(We will return to the problem of feeding the world another time.) 1. Planting trees with weak wood. Schinus molle (False Pepper tree) and Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven - glorious name which unfortunately only refers to ‘reaching to the heavens’) are examples of fast growing trees with weak wood. Beware of any tree that grows 5 feet in a year they’re usually weak! This leads to messy twigs all over your lawn after a breezy day and perhaps bigger branches after strong winds. The False Pepper Tree is, however, widely and effectively used as a street tree locally. Yes, the pink seeds are the “pink peppers” in those mixes of coloured peppers you can buy, so you can safely use them in cooking! 2. Planting trees too close to your home. All big trees start as little trees! Araucaria ( Norfolk Island Pine) will eventually get

well over 50 feet high, so don’t plant them 5 feet from your home. Many large trees will eventually develop big roots that buckle patios and driveways, so don’t plant them right next to concrete. 3. ‘Lawnmower Blight’ on trees. Lawn mowers and trimmers damage tree bark, which can kill a tree. The live tissues in a tree trunk that suck water up and transport sugars down are just inside the bark. Damaging those tissues hurts a tree just like hardening arteries hurts people and can eventually be fatal. 4. Buying a plant without checking suitability. Of course this doesn’t matter for annuals, but you should check on everything else. Every Garden Centre is full of plants that are not appropriate for the area, so beware. 5. Planting a large climber

on a small trellis. Wisteria, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, known as Virginia creeper, climbing hydrangea and many types of honeysuckle are huge, vigorous plants. Wisteria grows 25 to 30 feet or more. Climbing hydrangea can get 80 feet long. Vigorous means that these plants will work really hard to reach their full potential, so you’re in for a lot of pruning if you try to keep them to 10 feet. Choose a small vine (like clematis) for a small area instead. 6. Allowing climbers to climb up the sides of your home - having a climber on the side of your home is like laying out a welcome mat for insects. The tendrils or suckers that climbers use to hold themselves up can pull apart your brick or blocks and ivy (and others) will leave brown marks behind if you ever

pull them off. So put your climbers on a trellis or the fence. N.B. Bougainvillea is not a climber as you may find out after heavy rain! 7. Planting aggressive groundcovers in your flower bed. A plant makes a good groundcover if it spreads quickly. That’s bad news for its neighbours if they’re less vigorous and you’re not willing to referee frequently with a spade. Use groundcovers with care.

50+ men - are you taking care of your health? for example but are you sure your heart is healthy? How do you know you are not diabetic? Not all health problems give us warnings or have symptoms that we would necessarily take much notice of. So what can you do?

Screening means to look for signs of diseases and conditions before there are symptoms. It helps to identify health issues at an early stage leading to earlier treatment, minimising or avoiding complications and even saving lives. This is just as important for women as it is for men but we know from research studies that many men will not go anywhere near a Doctor unless dragged there or blackmailed!! So all you men, if you are offered health screening take advantage of it! Depending upon where you live you will have access to different types of screening but do remember virtually all kinds of screening are available privately. If you have concerns about family history of certain conditions have a chat with your Family Doctor.

50+ men - are you taking care of your health? We all know that sticking to a healthy lifestyle helps prevent many illnesses and health problems. People today are very conscious of this and most are at least making some kind of effort to stay healthy and fit. The trouble is how do you know that you efforts are paying off? Some things are obvious; we all have access to weighing scales

Some examples of health screening are: Blood pressure Cholesterol Diabetes Bowel cancer Prostate cancer Aortic aneurysm Think about it.......You wouldn’t drive a car for 50 years and expect nothing to go wrong with it! Checking brake hoses can save you from injury, death or disability! Now apply that same logic to your body. Screening for the above does not just improve prognosis for cancers and help prevent a fatal ruptured aneurysm but also helps avoid strokes, heart attacks, kidney and eye disease and even amputations! So, seriously think about screening tests. (See March Special Offer at the Family Medical Centre, Albir – 20% off PSA tests).

Brexit impact on British demand for property in Spain: The story so far The British voted to leave the EU in a referendum in June 2016. What impact has the referendum result had on British demand for Spanish property so far? Surprisingly little. The number of British buyers dropped significantly in the second half of 2016 after the referendum, but has been recovering since then (chart above). In yearly terms, British demand declined for five quarters between Q3 2014 and Q3 2017, but then started growing again in Q4 20017. The British are still by far the biggest group of foreign buyers of Spanish property, almost double the next biggest group – the French. Agents and developers tell

me they have seen an increase in British buyers with budgets above €400,000, and a fall in numbers in the middle market between €200,000 and €400,000. Some buyers in the middle market are trading down, bolstering the lower end. I’ve heard one theory that Brits with financial resources are getting money out of the UK and into European assets like Spanish property before Brexit really bites. There is a correlation between British demand for Spanish property and the strength of the pound, as you can see from the chart below. But whilst the pound has fallen below its level in 2013, British demand has been far more resilient. A weaker pound means that some British buyers will be trading down, but in volume

terms British demand has been surprisingly unaffected by the referendum result.

Torrevieja crew win the Altea Winter Regatta Last weekend’s annual 200 mile A2 Regata Invierno race from Altea to Ibiza and back was won by the Maverta representing Torrevieja’s Club Nautico. Although, the Maverta, crewed by Jose Ballester and Andreas Manresa, was not the first boat home, after a complicated series of compensations defined by vessel classification, the pair were declared overall winners. The prize for first boat home, therefore fastest boat in the race organised by Altea’s Club Nautico, went to Alzira, a boat from Moraira’s Club Nautico, crewed by Augustin Gregori and Abelardo Graullera, which finished in a time of 28 hours and 59 minutes. The race began last Friday lunchtime, after an initial postponement owing to lack of wind in the Bay of Altea. Following the restart, once out at sea, the wind picked up

by Simon Russell

considerably, allowing Maverta to take a significant lead on the outward leg. However, the return leg became increasingly difficult once the competitors rounded the North coast of Ibiza. A south westerly wind of around 30 knots, made sea conditions particularly treacherous, forcing several crews to abandon the race and head to the nearest port for shelter. Of the remaining boats, Alzira took the initiative and sailed into the lead. With heavy seas breaking over prows, the yachts headed into the crucial last five miles, crews exhausted from the race, but the Alzira crew held their nerve to finish first. Race prizes for this, the 32nd Altea Winter Regatta, were handed out during a celebration lunch last Sunday at the town’s Club Nautico restaurant.

the Benidorm for Lighting way the axe?

THE future of ITV comedy “Benidorm” is in doubt after British tabloid The Sun printed a story saying that ITV have decided to make the current series the last. The first episode of the new series – the tenth – premiered on 28 February but viewing figures of just over 4 million were said to have disappointed TV bosses. The sit com’s creator Derren Litton posted

CHUMS CONTINUE TO MAKE DONATIONS

by Simon Russell

on Twitter lambasting the tabloid’s story and, although the Sun said he later deleted this, there is still a tweet on Litton’s account laughing off the story. The “TV insider” (anonymous of course) credited with the Sun story said that the format had grown tired and many star names had left. Litten’s tweet,

Recently CHUMS (friends of charity) went with Joanne and Mary from Alfaz del Pi Social Services and bought over500 euros worth of food for Alfaz del Pi Food Bank. CHUMS is a small fully registered group who socialize three times a month and raise money. We also have occasional outings. posted in anticipation of the story said “Don’t make me ****ing laugh. I had that story after series 6. And 7. And 8 and 9…” Litten is undoubtedly busy at the moment and, as well as the upcoming “Benidorm” stage show which will be touring the UK later in the year, is said to be working on a new BBC comedy set in the distinctly less sunny climes of Scarborough.

NEW public lighting has been installed in the one kilometre stretch of road that runs along Avenida Bernat de Sarria between the Toledo Avenue and Severo Ochoa intersections in Benidorm. Thirty one lights have been installed, improving the vision vastly for both traffic and

pedestrians. The road did not previously have street lighting and the Town Hall took citizens feedback on board and put up the new lamps. The lamps are reusable and can be moved to other parts of the city if required. The project cost just under €40,000 and was included in last year’s budget; all lights comply with the Energy Efficiency Regulations.

Food festival a hit

THE Councillor for Trade and Tourism for Altea, Anna Alvado, has proclaimed the Plat de Calent festival at the end of last month a great success. 800 menus were served over the 10 day festival, a real boost to tourism and local trade in one of the municipality’s

quietest months, said Ms Alvado. The winners of the prize raffle were also announced with prizes including an all-expenses paid trip to the Torres Winery. Finally the establishment that was voted the best at the show was announced; this was Raco de Toni which gained the most public votes.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE by Eric Malpus

There were 2 F.A.Cup Replays & 10 Premier League games which provided the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with 31 goals,8 clean sheets,27 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Everton’s Welsh Defender Ashley Williams who was dismissed by Referee Chris Kavanagh. Brighton’s Lewis Dunk scored his 5th goal of the Season which helped the Seagulls to a fine 2-1 victory over the much beleaguered Arsenal team. Unfortunately for Dunk 4 of his goals have been against his own Australian keeper Matt Ryan. With only 9 Premier League weekends ahead & 3 lots of F.A.Cups ties to come things at the top of the A.F.F.L. are really warming up. Pauline’s Vodka Army have slashed Darren’s teams lead at the Summit to only 4 points. Two teams also in contention are Dominic’s Barnsley Braves and Joe’s Keith Lard F.C. who are both in joint 3rd place and are waiting for any slip up by the 2 front runners. The excitement at the top of the league has created a mundane World at the bottom with Laura’s Legends having remained in the bottom spot since the 5th week of the Season. The pace at the top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League is also hotting up as Wade’s team Alli Barber have managed to close the gap on the leaders Kieron’s team Clowns F.C. to only 9 points.Down at the foot of the

table, Gian Luca’s team Messi or Tidy had a good week clocking up 37 points which as left Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar 45 points behind them. Pauline’s Vodka Army are doing a Manchester City in our Mark Carter Ladies Section and have wrapped up the League before Easter. At the moment their advantage at the top is a massive 96 points over Isabel’s team The Bluebells. Raquel’s Mrs.Max & Paddy and Val’s Borobabe are left with The Bluebells fighting it out for the Runners-Up spot. No surprise for guessing whose at the bottom as Laura’s Legends are now trailing Reggie’s Rejects by 70 points. Both teams at the top of our Golden Boot League Wayne’s Two Years Running, Maybe and Andy’s Triple Trouble scored 14 points which meant that Wayne’s team held on to their 60 point advantage at the top.At the other end of the table, Len’s team Nelson’s Flagship are still sinking and are 13 points behind Laura’s Legends. We have 3 teams going into our Wyndham’s Monthly Wine Draw and they are our top scoring team this week Gil’s Eastlanders who bagged a massive 79 points courtesy of her Manchester City Players who had two lots of games going into the mix while on the other hand the two teams who join them both failed to score Kevin’s Mason United & Kim’s Ginger United mainly because both their teams were full of Manchester United Players who didn’t play till the

Monday Night game. Manager of the Month for March is being kindly sponsored by Roger & Dave at the Hotel Moli in Alfaz who have had the old Hotel completely refurbished as well as opening up a super Restuarant which provides excellent food at reasonable prices. With only one week gone the early pacesetters are Gil’s Eastlanders who have taken a small 4 point lead over Tom’s Loose Connections. Eric’s City Slickers & Terry’s Coblanca Cruisers are both in contention for this super meal for 2 are in 3rd & 4th place. After the 2 F.A.Cup Replays in Mid-Week Raquel’s Mrs.Max & Paddy have maintained their position at the top of our F.A.Cup League. They lead Linda’s Team Tapas by 18 points then comes Chris’s Two Left Feet. Tommy’s team Quantrill’s Raiders are holding everybody else up a the bottom and they don’t look like moving off the Trap Door as they only have one player left in the F.A.Cup Competition. Gil’s Eastlanders have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 provided by Nicola in the Kitchen at the Bar Code in Alfaz after climbing up 67 places from 173rd to 106th place in the Main League. This week the 5th Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup takes place. If any games are drawn the replays will take place the following week.Good Luck to all the Fantasy Managers still in this very popular K.O.Cup Competition.

La Vila Rugby snatch a last gasp win

Try scorer Leandro Rivero Playing away to the bottom placed Basque side,Getxo Artea,La Vila made hard work of what on form should have been an easy task. Matters weren’t helped by 3 yellow card infringements which at one stage reduced the visitors to just 13 men. They eventually came away with 5 points to improve their league position and are now 8 points clear of Hernani who occupy penultimate place at the bottom. The home side now face certain relegation after this defeat. They started the match knowing they needed a win. Their tackling was fierce and after 7 mins they took the lead with a penalty. 3-0. La Vila continued their lineout woes losing 3 in the matter of minutes. In the 24th minute La Vila came

back with a try which Jara missed the coversion after not waiting for the tee and trying for a drop,3-5. A yellow card for La Vila allowed Getxo to score a converted try,10 -5. Another 3 points saw the home side leading 13-5 at half time. Their defence held up really well as La Vila crossed their try line 3 times but the ball was not grounded. In the second half the visitors hit back with a try but the attempted conversion hit the upright and 2 points went astray, 13-10. A brilliant run from his own 20m line to that of the home side by Leandro Rivero and Errecaborde “Mandarina” scored an unconverted try, 13-15. Yet two more lost line-outs for La Vila and after 68 minutes with La Vila reduced to

13 men after 2 yellows, the home side scored an unconverted try from a penalty scrum,18-15. In the 76th. minute and from a penalty scrum Rivero crowned a brilliant match touching down and with the Jara conversion it was 15-22. The home were desperate to get a result but the La Vila defence held up well. Their next match is at home to third placed Alcobendas and is a must win for La Vila as it would cement their first division place. Only 2 points separates La Vila from the next 2 highest teams so if they can stop giving away the ball via line-outs and penalties, avoid yellow cards and make the try conversions they must be in with a chance having gone down away to Alcobendas 29-12.

GOLDEN OLDIES KEEP SWINGING

ONE of the highlights of Europe’s golfing calendar this year will be in Benidorm when the Costa Blanca Senior Masters event comes to the city in November. The international event is part of the prestigious European Senior Circuit which is made up of professionals over the age of 50, many of them household names,

by Simon Russell

including Miguel Angel Jiminez who was at the presentation event held to announce the details. The tournament will be staged at the Melia Vilaitaina Golf Club between 26 November and 1 December and the normally quiet period for visitors can expect to see a boost in tourism as a

result. Mayor Toni Perez made the announcement last week, accompanied by other councillors and representatives of the Senior Tour and the Melia Golf Resort. The mayor said that the tournament is a perfect fit for Benidorm tourism and promotes golf in the area, an activity which generated â‚Ź440 million across Alicante province

in 2017, creating around 10,000 jobs. The city is trying to secure the event for at least the next three years, hoping Benidorm can eventually become the golf capital of the Costa Blanca. He went on to point out that golfers spend on average 30 to 40% more than the average tourist who visits the resort.
