Coves gridlocked already THERE are concerns about how some of the Marina Alta’s quieter beaches will cope with traffic in the height of summer after the first properly warm weekend of the year brought traffic chaos to many of them. Javea’s Granadella, Barraca and Ambolo, El Moraig in Benitatchell and Denia’s les Rotes all saw excessive traffic as last weekend’s fine sunny weather following a disappointing spring

New road on track Benidorm BENIDORM Town Hall is currently going through the process of compulsory purchasing the land required to build the road connecting the N-332 with the new industrial estate outside the town. Ten of the expropriations have now been completed onwhat is mainly farmland, a process that started in February 2017. This represents about a quarter of the total land required although the council has given assurances that most of the remainder is well on the way to completion. When finally finished the new road will link Avenida Communidad Valencia to the new estate and the N-332, including a roundabout.

and brought people flocking to the little coves. At La Barraca for instance, cars were backed up all the way in, parking where they could and often inconsiderately, and making the matter worse with reports of blocked pavements and walkways. In the past there has been talk

of banning cars from the more popular coves and beaches that don’t have the infrastructure to cope, a call that will doubtless be repeated this year. Of course it is not until next month and August in particular when the Madrilenos and northern Spanish join the many foreign tourists that the true extent of the problem will be known. For now the best advice is take public transport or set off early.

Water world MUNDOMAR, the marine theme park in Benidorm, marked International Ocean Day with various educational events last Thursday. Pupils from schools around the country attended the day which had an environmental theme, in particular the problem of plastics which is getting such global attention currently. Talks were given on this subject by Mundomar’s Education Department, stressing the dangers animals are in from confusing the waste plastic with food. There was also a presentation on the peril dolphins are in as the oceans they live in become increasingly polluted.

Lions helping library by Matthew Richards

THE Teulada-Moraira Lions Club has donated €4,500 to completely reform the library at the Santa Maria Magdalena School in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. The planned renovation will include an outdoor reading and study centre, new furniture and the purchase of books. Education Councillor for the town Myra Van’t Hoff thanked the Lions, saying that that the creation of a warm and welcoming environment in the library was much needed. She also thanked local firm Garcia Garcia which offered special discounts on materials for the renovated space.

Learning to fly

by Simon Russell

TWO baby birds of prey that got trapped inside a building in Denia were rescued earlier this week. The incident happened at an empty farm where someone saw the distressed hawk chicks in an inner courtyard of a building there. They were unable to access them so contacted the authorities; a small fire crew and local police unit then attended the scene and managed to access and free the birds. It is believed they could have been taking flying lessons with their mother when they fell through the open roof of the courtyard. Both hawks have been taken to a specialist vet for treatment.

Junior chefs show their skills STUDENTS at a Javea school showed off some of their culinary prowess at La Portal Marina shopping centre near Ondara one day last week. The group of five from IES Raquel Paya cooked for a group including several local chefs who were then able to give feedback on the taste and presentation of the food. The public were also able to see for

themselves what the students are learning, in a region where the restaurant trade is an important source of employment. The pupils are on a course called a “cicle” which many youngsters in Spain attend after their period of obligatory education ends. A cicle is usually two years

long and focuses on a particular trade such as catering, finance, engineering, farming etc. It is a mixture of theory and practical and usually involves a long period of work experience placement. After the cicle ends some youngsters go on to university to study a related degree while others go straight into their chosen industry to work.

Sand dancers ICELANDIC visitors to l’Alfas del Pi celebrated their homeland’s national day with a mixture of traditional and not so traditional dances last week. Albir beach was the venue as a typical dance from Reykjavik was interspersed with Zumba and Latin dancing while there was also a yoga session. The group have been making the trip to Alfas and Albir to mark their national day with various events for the last decade. They used to travel to the Canary Island for this but have said they all agree that they prefer the Marina Baixa municipality.

Summer fun for youngsters

EL Campello’s Youth Department has announced a number of free summer activities aimed at the town’s 12 to 30 year old residents. These range from the educational to pastimes and hobbies. On the gastronomic side of things there is an ice cream workshop, a vegetarian cooking course and one on healthy eating. Poster designs, T-shirt printing and a comic workshop are available for the more artistic

youngsters as well as a photography course. There are plenty of other events planned; to register an interest or for further information go to www. juventudelcampello.es Priority will be given to those with an SIJ card and the registration period ends five days to a week before the start of each activity. The first course starts on the 2 July and the last is in September.

Beach towns along the coast of the Costa Blanca are gearing themselves up for one of the busiest fiesta nights of the year this weekend. The traditional Nit de San Juan, midsummer party celebration, takes place on June 23rd, which happens to fall on a Saturday night this year, giving more people the opportunity to participate in the festivities. Although the fiesta of San Juan on June 24th, is celebrated throughout Europe, in many parts of Spain, including the Valencia region, the action takes place on the eve of the saint’s day. For Spaniards, the festival, seen as the start of Summer and long, warm days, is a chance for family and friends to gather together on the beach to eat, drink and join in the fun. The festivals of Midsummer’s Eve (St. John’s Eve among Christians) have roots in ancient celebrations related to the summer solstice. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southward again. These days, many resort ban fires from being lit on their beaches and many, including Benidorm, have a night curfew, preventing beach access after dark. However, the Nit de San Juan is an exception to the rule, with many towns laying on bands, Dj’s, foodstalls and bars to keep the party-goers entertained. This ancient pagan festival is now legendary for its all night long party beach party of music, dance and fun. The night is all about fire and water, where young and old congregate to build fires and enjoy the night.

Revellers begin to gather on the beach during the early evening creating large bonfires from any kind of wood, such as old furniture and sharing food and drinks. Just before midnight, the fires are lit and when it is relatively safe to jump over the bonfire, it is done three times (although it could also be nine or any odd number) for good luck at the cry of “meigas fora” (witches off!). Once the jumping is finished, everyone rushes into the sea for a moonlight swim and cooling dip to cleanse the spirit. Amongst the many superstitions and myths surrounding the night, one such belief is that on the eve of San Juan, many of the local herbs and plants take on beneficial properties which will bring good luck, good health and good fortune to their bearer. Therefore, it is a tradition for

families to go for a walk through the woods to pick wild herbs which they offer to their loved ones in small bouquets, to be kept throughout the year. Another tale, popular with the younger generations, is that mythical creatures such as witches, goblins and trolls are more likely than on any other night to appear and play tricks on passers-by, so it is typical to see people in fancy dress, disguised as witches, devils or other sorcerous beings. The most popular organised events on Saturday are held on the beaches of Albir, Torrevieja, Calpe and La Cala de Finestrat. In Calpe, a bonfire will be lit around 22.00h on Arenal beach, with a band to entertain the crowds, followed by fireworks at midnight. In Torrevieja, the location for the festivities is Playa del Cura, where the fun begins around 21.00h.

In Albir, entertainment begins at the beachfront adjacent to the Boulevard de Estrellas at 18.00h. In Benidorm, there is no official fiesta activity, although people will be allowed onto the beach to jump into the sea. The city council has drafted in 32 extra local police officers as security during the festival, who will ensure the beaches are cleared of party-goers at 02.00h, to enable the clean up to begin. Most people in Benidorm head over to neighbouring La Cala de Finestrat, where the organised party, is considered by many regulars, to be the best along the coast. This year, the action begins at 19.30h with a Zumba party on the sand, followed by Dj’s Jesús Castillo, SBNZ and Vidijumpers, who will keep the music pumping until the early hours. Bars and food stands will provide refreshment, with buses shuttling revellers from Finestrat old town to the beach, between 19.30h and 02.00h as roads into the beach area will be closed from 20.00h. Amelia Mayor, councillor responsible for fiestas, urged people to arrive as early as possible, “This year we expect a greater influx of public because the night of San Juan falls on Saturday,” said Mayor. “Therefore, we redouble efforts in security with more police, civil guard, ambulance, mobile ICU and we extend the lifeguard’s hours until 02:00 hours.” The party ends at 05.00h, when a team of cleaners will return the beach to its normal pristine condition. by Andy Mansell

Hogueras de San Juan - Alicante VALENCIA City has its Fallas Celebrations and Alicante has June’s San Juan Hogueras Fiesta, with the main event this year taking place over the weekend of 22 to 24 June. The Hogueras is the city of Alicante’s biggest fiesta of the year, and does have its similarities with February’s Fallas as around 100 giant effigies are burnt over the festival to mark the arrival of the summer solstice. Festivities have been underway all this week with fireworks, food and

general partying in the warm weather across the city and spilling onto the beaches. The whole event culminates with the crema or burning of the statues on the 24 June. This year there has been an emphasis on good behaviour, with the city asking that people drink in moderation and warning that minors caught consuming alcohol will be sanctioned. Some Hoguera stations have even gone as far

as making themselves alcohol free zones for the fiesta. Alicante expects anything up to a million visitors for the duration of the event, many of them coming between this Friday and Monday. Much of the public transport network is being extended, with the TRAM between Benidorm and Alicante offering a 24 hours service on lines 1,2,3 and 4 between 20 and 24 June (check your station or the FGV website for full details).

the Dharma Foundation, which provides food, education, training and healthcare to girls in India. They may otherwise have been married off at a very young age by their family without an education to

help provide for their own future. The town receiving the aid is Vrindavan in the north of India. Rupa Raghunath Das from the “Food for Living Vrindavan” charity was in Alicante this week to meet with Mercedes Alonso, Alicante’s Citizenship Councillor.

Save our altar Stand-up for Javea THE Brotherhood of the Santissima Sang is holding a fundraising dinner to try and raise money to save the altarpiece at the Agustinas Convent in Denia. The Santissima Sang (holy blood) altar has become increasingly worn and now suffers from insect damage and severe cracks. The convent was opened back in 1604 by King Felipe III, although the altar has only been in place since the Civil War after a major fire burnt much of the original

structure and its contents. However it is a much loved and important piece of church craftsmanship and obviously has a religious significance for many. Parts of the original altar are also incorporated in the newer one. The dinner will be at the towns Club Nautico at 9pm on 30 June, costing €20. Tickets are available in the chapels of Asuncion, San Antonio and San Miguel as well as the Agustinas convent itself.

JAVEA’S third “Concurso de Dijous de Comedia” was won by Jaume Concordia as the competition to find the best local stand-up comedian held its final last Friday evening. The monologues had to be on a local theme and the San Juan Festival and Les Quinteas all featured. The jury judged Jaume to be the eventual winner with the prize being awarded by Mayor Jose Chulvi. The Riurau d’Arnauda had been the venue for the popular event which was compered by the well-established Valencian comic Oscar Tramoyeres who also did a stand-up set.

Cytomegalovirus

(CMV)

CMV is a common viral infection spread through bodily fluids, such as saliva and urine. It can be passed on through close bodily contact. For example, the infection can be found in small droplets of saliva which are spread from one person to another when an infected person coughs or sneezes. CMV is part of the herpes family of viruses. As with most other herpestype viruses, once you are infected with CMV, it will remain inactive in your body for the rest of your life. CMV causes few symptoms in most people. The different types of CMV infection are: • Primary CMV - where someone develops a CMV infection for the first time • Reoccurring CMV - a previously inactive CMV infection is reactivated, often because the immune system (the body’s natural defence against infection and illness) is weakened • Re-infection with CMV - an infection with a different strain of virus • Congenital CMV - a CMV infection develops when a woman is pregnant and infects the unborn baby

such as learning difficulties and hearing loss. A few babies who are born with congenital CMV but have no symptoms at birth will experience hearing loss that develops over their first few years of life. If you planning a pregnancy or suspect that you might be pregnant, see a Midwife as soon as possible. A simple blood test will determine your CMV status. If you do test positive, treatment and management can begin without delay.

Unborn and newborn babies

If a woman becomes infected with CMV for the first time during pregnancy, there is a risk that she may pass the infection on to her unborn baby. Infection in the unborn baby is known as congenital CMV. It is estimated that 1 to 4 babies in every 200 will be born with congenital CMV. Only 1 in 10 babies who are born with congenital CMV have symptoms at birth. For them, however, the infection can be serious, even fatal. It is estimated that between 10-30% of very young babies (less than 28 days) with a CMV infection will die. The risk can be much higher in premature babies. Babies that do survive may develop long-term problems,

Gardening on the Costa Blanca

Perhaps the brief mention of rose cuttings last week should have been amplified. The cuttings should be about as thick as a pencil and about 9 inches long. No leaves (they’ll lose them anyway) or side shoots. Just make a slot with a spade about as deep as the blade, water then push the cuttings in (root end first – if you cut on the diagonal at the bottom and square across at the top, you’ll be able to identify them) and firm up. Provided they are out of the sun, they should manage by themselves until spring but mark the site so you don’t forget and pull them out as weeds! It’s the scattergun approach to propagation – like planting far too many seeds!), so when you dig them up in spring, some may have rotted and some may have rooted – but they didn’t cost you anything so if you have no success, you haven’t lost much!

Back to street trees etc., Oleander, particularly white flowered, grown on a single stem as a tree is very impressive at the moment – perhaps 20ft. high and covered in blossom. There is also the False Pepper Tree, Schinus molle,

another very attractive quick growing tree but not without its problems. It too is very messy - dropping leaves, flowers and even branches. Its berries are not only decorative but are the pink ‘peppercorns’ found in those mills of differently

coloured peppercorns to be found in the supermarkets. Although not related to the true pepper, it does the same job and is currently under scientific investigation because of the bewildering array of interesting compounds which can be

obtained from it. Found much less frequently is the Judas Tree so named because allegedly Judas Iscariot hanged himself from one (probably closer to the truth was that this tree grew throughout Judea and thus was called “Judea’s Tree” ), Cercis siliquastrum, which has bright pink pea-flowers opening before or with the leaves in spring, followed by flattened, deep purple pods. The BIGGEST in Europe By Tony Myles

AN amateur golf competition has just concluded this past weekend in Spain and it is arguably the largest amateur competition in Europe. Qualification started this time last year and in the twelve month period it has involved over 10,000 participants. This pairs competition was created as a “thankyou” gesture from Campbell Lamont to the many societies along the Costas just a few years ago and from a handful of players it has spread throughout Spain and out across Europe. Europe wide entrants Several European countries now organise local and national knockout competitions with the best pair progressing to an all-expenses-paid

four days in Spain. This year saw the successful winners of knockout events from Iceland, Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland and every corner of Spain contesting the Grand Final at the La Sella Golf Resort. This meant that players, along with their domestic partners, arrived on Thursday at the La Sella Golf Resort near Denia. A welcome dinner featured a draw for partners and the competition commenced early on Saturday. Thirty two players battling over four rounds in a league format. With four rounds to be played over two days. I need to make special mention of the local interest with the North Costa Blanca duo representing Levante Alan

great golf which saw them defeating Valencia and England before being narrowly defeated

by the eventual winners. What time does it get dark? October! The Icelandic pairing of Elin and Bragi were thrilled to have won through in their local final which due to weather and daylight limitations was decided several months ago. Elin has the distinction of being the only lady golfer to have made it to the final. (She also has the distinction of having the longest name – Guobjong Elin Ragnarsdottir.) They also admit that because their golfing season expires at the end of September they decided to pay an early visit to La Sella back in March for a practise round. This ploy did help them to a certain extent, as they defeated Locos-forGolf Eduardo Manrique and Jose Luis Maluenda from Valencia and the England representatives Steven Costigan and Stuart Whittle en route to claiming 6th place. Everyone agreed that it was a great competition and the qualification process for next year has already commenced with many pairs determined to qualify once more. The Sunday afternoon session saw the winners

handicap in a positive way. Take your card and cross out the par of each hole. Now with a sharpie alter the par so that it

reflects your handicap. So as an example; you have a handicap of 18, the par for the course would be 90 (not 72 as written on the card). Now as you are playing, when you score a par 4 on a par 4 you need to react as though that is a birdie (which against your handicap it is) This creates a positive mindset more akin to the mentality you have when playing your friendly matches. On the other side if you make a 7 on a par 5, you can look at it as “getting out of jail” as you have only made a bogey (rather than the double bogey).

Remember that you have a handicap to use, and if you can use it correctly and you are playing regularly you can reduce your handicap comfortably. The method described also works as your handicap falls, instead of thinking “oh my god, this week I only have 14 shots instead of 18” you simply write your handicap par on the card and play the card. Competitive rounds already create additional pressure, don´t add further pressure on your shoulders.

Play your handicap, not the card! By Alex Ward

A common frustration many golfers have is the transference of their scores from friendly fourballs into competition rounds. I hear it all too often, a golfer complaining about how they are unable to put together a good score in a tournament, even though they know they are playing better than their handicap would suggest. There is a simple reason that can explain this and that is the mentality of a golfer when they play a friendly game compared to that of a competitive round. In competition, a golfer is more worried about

what their score is to par (the course) rather than the number of points they have achieved (or being up or down in a match play). This change in

approach adds additional pressure, resulting in more tension and worse scores. I propose a very simple trick; Use your

Why you should be using an in to in putting stroke... MUCH has been talked about when it comes to the putting stroke with the vast majority of players believing that the putter should go straight along the target line and through towards the target on the same line. I do not agree with this thought process, as it creates a stifled movement. Instead I believe that you should be using the most natural of movements to enhance your putting stroke. The arc. As you move the putter back the shoulders will naturally rotate inside the intended target

line, taking the putter with it. (If we do not force the putter to stay on the target line). On the follow through the shoulders will again naturally rotate inside the intended line creating a naturally shaped arc. As you move the putter back the clubface should always be square relative to the swing path, meaning that at the furthest point during the back swing the putter will look as though it is open to the intended target line. This is correct, and something that many golfers using the “traditional” stroke struggle to maintain. Now if we can

eliminate the use of the hands or wrist and have a face-balanced at impact putter (for example the incredible SeeMore putter range) the putter face will automatically return to square upon impact sending the ball directly down our intended target line and hopefully into the hole. (If we correctly line the putter up that is!). The beauty of the in to in stroke is that we need absolutely no manipulation during the swing, as we need to take the putter back perfectly straight. This means that we can have a putting stroke that is easy to repeat, relatively tension free and

a stroke that ensures the putter face will be square at impact. A much simpler

POOR BODY BODY POOR MOTION MOTIONAND AND COIL POOR body motion and coil are directly related to the posture which you establish at the address position. Whilst creating good posture, influences how the body can move, it is important to understand the motion that the body must perform to create a repeatable, effective swing. The coiling motion of the whole body creates torsion and resistance which creates stored energy which can be used to accelerate the club on the downswing. This stored energy together with the shifting of the weight provides the club head speed which is ultimately transferred through the arms to the hands and then to the club head as it strikes the ball. Without this coil or stored energy, shots will

Have you been shafted? Written by Tony Myles in Association with Campbell Lamont Golf

Do manufacturers make club design confusing intentionally? Every week I read about some new technological breakthrough that will improve my golf, and the latest area that has grabbed my attention is the current discussions on the nature of your shafts. How on Earth do you make a decision? When I invested in my first set of clubs they were cast-offs from a friend who assured me that they were ideal for a beginner. The truth was that they were only “ideal” for him as he needed the cash to help him buy his new set. They were unforgiving blades and for a beginner they were a nightmare. However at that time I had no concept of the variety of choice in the world of golf

clubs. And today that range of options has grown to unimaginable proportions. No longer can you just buy a set of Callaways, Ping or TaylorMade. You have to determine what options in head design and shaft technology will best suit your needs. You have to be mindful of your age and fitness level, which can affect the way in which you deliver the club-head to the ball and the speed at which you do so.

a 30 minute time slot. During this session the manufacturer’s professional, and the systems available within these pantechnicons, will carefully analyse your swing in terms of stance and speed and will then design a set of clubs specifically to suit you. Within one more hour this complete set will have been created and presented to you with the manufacturers compliments – and invoice.

So how do you make those choices? One option is to take advantage of the manufacturers fitting days. These are available at regular intervals along the Costas when several large trailers will appear in a car park. When you book an appointment you will be allocated

So how do you know you have the ideal combination? You could carry on visiting each of these manufacturers fitting days and possibly never make a final decision. However, the probability is that at any point in time all manufacturers are very close in terms of their

range and so, any decision you make is unlikely to be widely unsuitable or potentially betterserved by a different supplier. Therefore, having invested your time you can relax as the computing technology analyses you in minute detail and removes any need for you to worry about the various options in terms of weight of the shaft, length or the flexibility. You can look forward to the new-found talent as your drives sail majestically down the centre of the fairway and your chips bite into the green and draw back towards the hole. Sadly the new clubs do not come with a guarantee!! Cometh the hour! For every keen golfer there will be a time when you acknowledge that the clubs you have cherished

for a decade might be due for retirement and replaced by the latest state-of-the-art. Suppress the remorse you feel, as you realise that they are destined to languish in the corner

of a local charity shop. Consider instead that you will be relaunching your golf career and your old set will be providing a budding star with his or her first entry into the sport.

The US OPEN - What happened? By Tony Myles

IT wasn’t a classic. It was plagued with controversy. You need only look at the list of top players who failed to make the cut to understand that something was amiss. Just look at these scores after just two days for players who would thereafter become spectators. Jordan Spieth - 9 over par. Rory McIlroy - 10 over par along with the resurgent Tiger Woods. Jason Day - 12 over Sergio Garcia - 14 over And possibly most surprising John Rahm - 15 over. These guys were destined to take no part in the second half of the competition and it is possible that many of them were quite happy with that situation as many complained that the course was setup to humiliate them rather than to test their ability. Is that what we want to see? Is it satisfying that we mere mortals are witnesses to our super heroes failing in just the same way that we do? Admittedly they did have the incentive of a $12,000,000 prize pot to focus their minds and many would argue that there should be no course on which it is beyond their capacity to score well. An indication of the difficulty is evidenced by the leader after two days Dustin Johnson who on his third round carded 7 over and declared that he had played well. Was Phil playing hockey? Saturday is often referred to as “moving day” as challenges are mounted and overnight leads start to

diminish. For Phil it will be forever known as Moving Ball Day. For the entire field it was a exercise in maintaining self-control and the inevitable buildup of frustration was never more evident than on the 13th green. Phil Mickelson rolled a putt past the hole when it started to gather momentum and would have undoubtedly rolled off the green and close to the bunker. He ran after it and hit it back towards the hole before it had stopped. SHOCK HORROR!! The resulting outrage was deafening as, like a Brexit referendum, the world of golf was split in two. “Off with his head!” Shouted one side “It is punishable by instant disqualification!” “No he was merely using a rule that states he should be penalised by two shots and carry on with his round.” Declared the opposition. The beating of breasts will continue for some time but the major loser will be the credibility of the USGA and the sport in general. Phil added to the argument by apologising. This was a clear sign that he felt he had transgressed. What do the rules state? I think they are clear - “A player must not take an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play.” The penalty for doing so is equally clear - “Stroke play – Two strokes *In the case of a serious breach of Rule 1-2,

the Committee may impose a penalty of disqualification” The fact that the committee did not deem the infraction to be “serious” means that the two stroke penalty is applied and Phil could continue to participate. However. . . . . If a player running after his ball on the green in a Major competition and intentionally hitting it back to the hole rather than watch it roll off the green is NOT serious at what point does it become so? Before I am buried in a sea of protest I should add that I have been a fan of Phil for many years, and in fact I had chosen him in Campbell’s Major Wager (Check the CLGOLF web site), but I am fairly sure that he allowed his frustration to overcome his good judgement on this occasion and fully expected to be disqualified. Hence he felt the need to apologise. Other opinions are available. What is yours? Email tony@bayradio.fm

LCG Golf Course Review

By Alex Ward NLP Golf Practictioner WGTF Level 3 Recommended Golf Coach · Club fitter and builder golfstash@gmail.com

Vistabella Golf LOCATED between San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos on the CV945 you will come across Vistabella Golf. At the start of this year, the course was finally extended to 18 holes with the final 7 holes eagerly awaited by many of the local residents. Set within the rolling countryside, offering some wonderful views across the nearby mountains and orange groves Vistabella Golf has wowed golfers

with the wonderful design that blends perfectly into its surroundings. The 18-hole golf course is beautiful and challenging at every turn, which is immediately apparent when you reach the first tee. A short par four, that presents you with a sea of sand a hybrid to the middle of the downhill sloping fairway should leave a short iron or wedge into the green. Be sure to check the flag position or you could be faced with a difficult putt.

By Alex Ward

OVER the last few years I have seen a dramatic increase in the number of golfers that are carrying lob wedges. A lob wedge is a wedge that has 60º or 64º of loft. A good many years ago, I considered myself adept at playing delicate shots around the green and having a generally good short game. A short hitter, I was always trying to find a way to improve my chances of getting up and down. So, I purchased a 60º lob wedge. After a few days of practicing the delicate little shots around the green and the more spectacular “flop” shot made famous by Phil Mickelson I decided to add to my arsenal of pitch shots. I was certain this was a good

From here you cross onto the new layout, and the holes will not disappoint. The third is a great downhill par 5, which for the longer hitters is reachable, but with the peninsular style green, finding the putting surface is harder than it may first appear. Hole 4, a par four sweeps around the lake and requires both bravery and accuracy from the tee. The second shot onto one of the trickiest greens on

the course is played over the lake. The view through the valley on the 6th tee is superb and the hole is just as good. A long par four, played downhill to a green protected short right by a bunker. Anything long could find the water behind the green. As you cross back to the original holes, the course maintains the same high standards of maintenance and rolling design, the 9th with the trees that provide

the logo for the club is a good test of golf, while the 14th a par five that can be reached in two is a great chance for birdie for the longer hitters, while for the shorter hitters the long route means this is a true threeshot par five. The stand out aspect of Vistabella are the greens which are superb, undulating and quick. For those that are looking for a complete golf club, Vistabella meets all the criteria. The clubhouse

may be temporary but it is large and enjoys a great terrace on which you can enjoy a cold drink or a complete meal. The pro-shop is wellstocked and the caddy masters are more than welcoming, providing a wonderful service. Practice facilities are also good with a large driving range, putting green, practice bunker and golf academy. Additionally there are padel courts and a bowling green.

IS IT NECESSARY? purchase, until I started to pitch the ball that is. What a waste of time, the club always seemed to go the same distance and I just could not get the ball to fly further than 50-yards. After a few more weeks of dedicated practice, a few annoyingly poor pitch shots I ditched the lob wedge. Since then I have failed to be convinced that this is a club that amateur golfers should be carrying in their bags. It is a club that requires to much precision to be deemed necessary for the bag. Hit it a little soft and it pops up and goes nowhere. Catch the grass ever so slightly before the ball and it digs into the ground and the ball moves a few inches. Use it from the bunker and you risk the

lob wedge that defies logic and travels as far as your 8-iron. So apart from the delicate “Mickelsonesque” flop shot from behind the bunker to the pin tucked just behind it, I can´t see a purpose for it. Considering that you can learn to play the same delicate shot with your standard 56º sand wedge I believe that

the lob wedge has no place in the bag of the average amateur golfer. You would be much better served by adding an extra fairway wood or hybrid club to your bag.

M&G European Property Fund expands portfolio in Spain

M&G European Property Fund has expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of industrial and retail assets in Spain. The €3bn core European property fund, managed by M&G Investments’ real estate arm, said it bought two industrial and two retail assets for €80m. The two retail acquisitions are H&M Reyes Catolicos in Granada and Gran Via 68 in Madrid. Both sites, which total 3,668sqm, are leased. The industrial sites Teka Logistics Platform and a further asset in the Getafe logistics corridor are both in Madrid. The sites have a combined size of 55,092sqm. Fund manager David Jackson, said: “Our latest research suggests the Spanish economy will continue to perform well, with its recovery having accelerated in 2017. “This extends to the commercial real estate market, where we predict average rental growth in both industrial and retail will range between three and four percent per year for the next three years in Madrid.”

Jackson said these new acquisitions fit perfectly with our strategy to increase our exposure to Continental Europe by investing in core assets in strong growth markets. “We see a strong correlation between the level of rental growth and tourist spend in major tourist destinations across Europe; Madrid and Granada are very good examples of this trend.” Federico Bros, a director of asset management for Spain and Portugal, said: “We have seen strong demand for high street retail in prime locations across Spain. Both of the retail sites we have purchased are in established locations and offer great rental growth prospects. “The industrial sector in Spain also offers strong rental growth prospects as online activity accelerates and these acquisitions help us diversify our portfolio in key sectors.” M&G European Property Fund was launched in 2006, with a mandate to invest in a globally diversified portfolio of assets in mature European markets outside the UK.

2.The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office. 1.The most violent appetites in all creatures are lust and hunger; the first is a perpetual call upon them to propagate their kind, the latter to preserve themselves. “Like bubbles on the sea of matter borne, they rise, they break, and to that sea return.”

In Memory of Peter Collins of Benitachell Bowls Club.

On the 15/16th of June, a competition took place at Benitachell Bowls Club in memory of Peter Collins, a member of long standing and a perfect bowler and gentleman. The competition was sponsored by Maria Morawiec of Dragon Insurance, the daughter of Peter who along with Valerie, Peter’s wife, was

there to present the trophy for the winners and wine and glasses for the runners up. There were 64 members of the BBC, who signed up to take part, and the format of the competition was teams of four people playing two rinks games and four pairs games over the period of two days. Some superb bowling

took place in very warm conditions and the final outcome was the team of, (stood from right to left) Trevor Neale, Brian Fenton, Carol Davies, and David Browne. The runnersup were (Top left) Chris Barnsby, (below left to right) Greg Sperring, Mal Chamberlain and Rob Walker.

That’s our Icelandic boy

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Every world cup has its own magically unforgettable moments, with matches that shred the nerves, stir the soul and remind us why the beautiful game is still the most popular sport on earth. Now into its second week, the current competition, taking place in Russia has already served up some scintillating excitement, such as the Ronaldo hat trick for Portugal against Spain and the famous victory by Mexico over current holders Germany, which caused two mini earthquakes in the countries capital city as fans jumped up and down in celebration. However, for one seventy-eight year old Icelandic grandmother and her family on holiday in Albir, seeing her grandson save a second half penalty from perhaps the most famous footballer in the world, Argentina and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, was one of the highlights of her life. Kirstin Gudridur Larusdottir and her large group of family members chose the big tv screen

by Andy Mansell

at the Orange Tree in Albir, to watch Iceland take on two time former winners Argentina in their first ever World Cup finals match. You might be aware of some of Iceland’s incredible recent footballing history. How a nation of 345,000 people, about the same population as Coventry or Honolulu, put together a team that beat England in the 2016 European Championships. How a team of well-drilled journeymen, without any standout stars aside from perhaps Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, went on become the smallest country to ever qualify for a World Cup finals. How their coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, was a practising dentist until recently and how Iceland’s supporters group popularised the now iconic Icelandic thunderclap, replicated on terraces across the world. For proud Kirstin and her group, last Saturdays opening group game against the South

American giants, bore even greater significance, as her eldest grandchild, Hannes Thor Halldorsson, 34, was playing in goal for his national team. They arrived in the bar bedecked in football shirts, scarves, flags and other memorabilia, many signed by Hannes himself and settled down excitedly to watch their man, (who only turned professional recently, when he began playing for Danish premier team Randers and has a whole other career as a film and documentary maker in Iceland), in action and he didn’t disappoint. With 64 minutes gone Argentina seemed to have found

the decisive break on a tight, bruising afternoon that saw their revered attack struggle to find its gears against an excellent

Iceland team. The score was 1-1, Iceland were holding steady, when a long pass from the left found Sergio Agüero who was suddenly in space in the area. Sent tumbling by a collision with Hördur Björgvin Magnússon a penalty was given. Half of the stadium leapt up, phones raised as Lionel Messi stepped up to take it, but the kick was too close to Halldórsson, who

guessed the right way and palmed the ball far enough from goal. Back in Albir, the goalkeepers family held their collective breaths, then burst into a frenzy of joy and excitement at the brilliant penalty save, which will surely go down in world cup history for Halldórsson, who six years ago directed Iceland’s entry to the Eurovision song contest, but who has now saved a penalty from Messi in front of a few hundred million people and made his grandma the proudest woman in Spain last weekend. Kirsten, who has eleven other grandchildren and four great grandchildren, has another week here on holiday in the town and has vowed to return to watch her hero in action on Friday, when Iceland take the Super Eagles of Nigeria ….. Don’t bet against the

PEGO GOLF SOCIETY SINGLES STABLEFOR COMPETITION PLAYED AT OLIVA NOVA ON TUESDAY 19TH OF JUNE 2018 On a fantastic summers morning , 41 Pego members set out to play a regular Singles Stableford Qualifier Competition at Oliva Nova Golf Club. The course was in just perfect condition, and by far the best course in the region, as was the weather, making for an excellent game of golf, which was reflected in the scores. The results of the main competition were as follows:-

Division 2

The star of the show, and featured in the photograph above was Shaun O’Gorman, who aced his tee shot at Hole number 3, so it was drinks all around in the clubhouse afterwards.

Congratulations Shaun on a day to remember The “Balls in the Water” prize was won today by Kenny Millar with 98 balls so many congrats to Kenny. Man of the week, has to go to Shaun O’Gorman with a great “Hole In One” at hole number 3. Finally in the match play second round, the game between Ian Robertson and Peter Brown, ended with Peter Brown 1 up after 18 holes, and in the everlasting game between Steve Patton and Danny Herron, Steve triumphed after two replays by 4 & 2. Finally, I would like to thank the management and staff ot Oliva Nova for the help and courtesy

shown to members of both Pego and Montgo, during the playing of the Montgo Trophy . It was appreciated by all concerned. For the record Montgo won by a score of 41 to 39, so the result hinged on one put going the other way, but, sincere congratulations to Montgo on a fine performance and winning the

Montgo Challenge for 2018. Next week, on Tuesday 26th of June at Oliva Nova, we are playing a Team Accumulator Competition, so should you want to join us at Pego, please contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com, and we would love to see you.
