Abandon Ship by Andy Mansell

TWO BRITISH families escaped uninjured after a onemillion-euro luxury motorboat hit rocks off Cala de Portixol in Javea on Sunday afternoon.

the vessel struck the rocks, some 250 metres from the shore of La Barraca beach at around 4.00 pm. “It all happened in a matter of minutes”, added Jason, as the

holidaymakers were rescued by a jet ski and boat manned by the Cruz Roja and the local police. “We heard a large bang, and we went below to see the cabins filling with water very quickly”.

The two families were forced to leave their personal effects, including their mobile phones, on the boat, which then sank.

Investment Choices – where should you begin? Three main investing are:

possibilities

when

• making deposits; • buying fixed interest securities; and • buying equities. Each must bear a relatively stable rate of return relationship to the other for the economy to function. Let’s look at how they compare.

Cash Deposits

By Tracy Storer

Senior Partner Chorus Financial The world of investing can be very complex and confusing. Making the right investment choices however is absolutely paramount to ensuring your long term financial goals can be met. Most people seek a professional Financial Adviser or a Discretionary fund manager to select and manage their investments, but it is always good (and sometimes interesting) to getting a better understanding of the main areas of investing.

Deposits generally yield less than fixed interest securities for a similar degree of risk, and rarely achieve much real growth over time once tax is taken into account, but funds can be accessed more easily.

Fixed interest securities Fixed interest securities generally yield lower overall returns than equity investments, but have higher returns than deposits; however, they will rarely beat inflation by a significant amount. They tend to be lower risk than equities.

Equities

Equity investments will generally achieve returns that are higher than both fixed interest securities and cash deposits

over the longer term. The dividend yield on equities is, however, usually low compared to the yield on fixed interest securities, but both dividends and share prices have the potential to grow over time to compensate. There may be a higher level of risk.

is almost certain to have repercussions in the others, i.e. a reduction in interest rates could encourage a rise in both fixed interest and equity values, but lower returns from deposits.

Different Roles

There is, therefore, a fixed hierarchy of returns that is unlikely to be breached for any substantial period. In assessing the choices that are available, the following points should also be considered: Investors’ money tends to move to those areas where it will achieve the best results, in relation to both the risk that is involved and how long investors are prepared to tie up their funds. There are separate financial markets in each of the main types of investments (cash deposits, fixed interest securities and equities). However, a change in one market, such as an interest rate change,

FROM FRONT PAGE Once ashore at La Barraca, the six-strong group were looked after by the owners of a local bar, who helped them dry out their clothes, and supplied a phone so that Jason could call the authorities at Dénia Marina, where the boat had been moored, in addition to notifying the insurance company. The boat was said to be three-years-old, with the skipper Jason, reported to be an experienced navigator who knows the local waters well. A salvage company was commissioned on Monday to deal with the sunken vessel, with concerns over possible pollution, since the boat had up to a thousand litres of diesel in the fuel tank.

BODY FOUND

THE body of a missing man has been found on the coast between the Elche and Santa Pola municipalities. The discovery was made on Sunday morning in an area between some rocks and Carabassi beach, with early indications that he died from drowning. He man, said to be in his early fifties, was reported as missing two days earlier.

SIX ARRESTED FOR TRAVELLING ON FALSE DOCUMENTS

In a week which saw the first drop in passenger figures at Alicante Airport in six years, specialist Border Security officers arrested six people illegal passports. The detainees, who entered the country on flights from different countries, were of different ages, failed to convince the agents, trained in spotting forged documents, that their passports were genuine. Border control officials are aware that people try to take advantage of increases in passenger traffic at this time of year to attempt to enter the country illegally, so more of the specially trained staff are put n place during the peak

A fall in number, of over 10,000 travellers saw July’s figure reach 1,598,795, a fall of 1.8% on the same figures last year. The figures echo those of hotels, apartments, campsites and other tourist facilities in Benidorm, which have also seen a dip in fortunes during the same period. Festival horror

OVER 300 people were injured, five seriously, after a section of wooden platform collapsed at an urban sports and music festival in northern Spain on Sunday night. It had been packed with people watching a rap artist at the two-day O MarisquiĂąo event in the north-west city of Vigo, in Galicia. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as people - many of them teenagers tried to scramble to safety,

by Alex Trelinski

with some falling into the sea. Several emergency teams attended to the injured, and divers were sent into the sea to check that no-one was trapped beneath the structure. The incident happened shortly before midnight on Sunday as a crowd was listening to the Mallorcan rap artist Reis B. According to eyewitnesses, the wooden

platform gave way during the first song of the concert as Rels B, who had just started his performance, told the crowd to jump. It is not clear whether the platform collapsed because there were too many people on it, or because the structure itself was weak, or whether other factors were involved. O MarisquiĂąo is a free outdoor festival that takes place in Vigo every August, which is attended by some 160 thousand visitors.

Water shortages hit the Marina Baixa

The prolonged period of extreme temperatures combined with a lack of rain across the Alicante Province have caused water supply problems for two areas around Altea recently. Residents living in the inland mountain village of Tarbena have will have a restricted overnight service between the hours of 22.00h and 07.00h from this coming Sunday August 19th, whilst those residing in the13,000 homes on the exclusive Altea Hills development have been advised not to drink or use tap water for cooking purposes. Tarbena town hall warned its residents of the impending

by Andy Mansell

cuts in supply, through a social media announcement last week. The overnight cuts will affect both properties within the town and those in the surrounding rural areas. The reasons given were purely due to a lack of water in the Murtawell which serves the town, owing to a lack of rain in recent weeks and the extra usage caused by summer visitors, which double the population of the municipality. The cuts come only days after homes were left without water last week following an

electrical fault, which took three days to rectify. Angry business owners of the municipality have complained that their livelihoods are being affected, even though a proposed plan to transfer water from another well six kilometres away, Picassaries are halfway to completion. Meanwhile, the situation in the Altea Hills Urbanisation has left homeowners and residents complaining bitterly about the service offered by their water supplier Apobersa, as the problems of contaminated tap water occurs most summers. They have already been

experiencing water cuts and been prohibited from using tap water to fill their swimming pools. They say the situation is unacceptable, as they pay their taxes and IBI just like the rest of the population, but the problems only seem to affect them, accusing the Altea council of looking the other way, whilst a 2.7 million projected plan to connect the development to the mains water supply sits on the table. One member of the residents association said “All we are asking for is that we can open a tap and water comes out for consumption, just like in the rest of Altea”

Albir Fiesta Starts Friday

Crowds of partygoers are expected to pack in toAlbir’s shady Eucalyptus Park this weekend, for the annual summer fiestas which begin on Friday August 18th. For the duration of the fiestas, which end on Sunday, the park is completely taken over by the dozens of ‘penyas’ or social clubs who are allocated a few square feet each within the park to make their own. A total of around 41 penyas with approximately 750 associated members, including 120 minors

by Andy Mansell

are expected to take part in this years event. Organisers, encouraged by a good weather forecast are looking forward to welcoming a bumper crowd of residents and tourists to the three days of activities. Friday’s inauguration party includes a performance by folk group The Boys of the City and continues with music from Ivan Deejay. On Saturday, apetanque

championship will be held at the Retirement and Pensioners Club of l’Albir, aquatic attractions set up for the little ones on ÓscarEsplá Avenue, a Flower Power party will take place at the Eucalyptus Park, and a scary mascletá nocturnal organised by the Ricasa pyrotechnics will bring a touch of drama to the Albir market car park continuing with live music from the Gamma Live orchestra and, finally, a foam party with DJ Jes Set takes place back in the Eucalyptus park.

Browser blackmail

THE NATIONAL POLICE have warned about a big blackmail plot which looks to expose web users’ porn site history unless they cough up to two and a half thousand euros. Blackmailers are sending emails to their targets in which they reveal victims’ personal passwords and claim their computers have been hacked. ‘They claim to be in possession of personal intimate pictures or videos obtained through the computer’s webcam when the user was visiting pornographic sites,’ the National Police

by Alex Trelinski

said in a statement. They then demand payment in bitcoin or other virtual currencies within 24 hours to stop them from publishing them. Sums of between 350 and two and a half thousand euros are being asked for by the blackmailers, as they threaten to send videos to families of their marks. The National Police say they are getting around a hundred complaints a day, and that the demands should be ignored as they are a bluff, especially since no videos exist because the computers were not hacked in the first place.

The magic of Pablo Alboran in Alicante One of Spain’s most popular performers takes to the stage of Alicante’s Plaza de Toros on Saturday night August 18th. Pablo Alboran, who at the age of 29, has a string of hit singles and albums behind him, will be showcasing songs from his latest album ‘Prometo’, which has been at the number one spot on the Spanish charts for the last eight weeks. Famous for uploading his songs onto Youtube, whilst

by Andy Mansell

he was recording them for his first album, the 2010, self entitled ‘Pablo Alboran’, the young Malagueno singer became one of the biggest internet hits in the country, with millions of views of his videos. Eight years, four albums and multiple hit singles later, the modest performer has become a favourite with music fans of all ages, who love his self penned ballads

and upbeat numbers, such as ‘Solamente Tu’, ‘Tanto’, ‘El Beso’ and ‘Quien’, which have all reached number one in Spain and throughout Latin America. Following the highly successful South American leg of his tour, Alboran landed

in Spain earlier this year to perform for the first time in two years on home soil. Organisers of the event announced in the last few days that a few tickets for Saturdays concert were still available, by visiting the singers website www.pabloalboran.es

A BRITISH teenager, who was poisoned after going on a night out with his family on the Orihuela Costa, is back home in Yorkshire. 17-year-old Callum Forster from Leeds was released from Torrevieja Hospital earlier this month after spending 11 days on a life support machine. As previously reported in The Weekender, Callum was rushed to hospital a month ago, after he and his stepfather collapsed

after having some drinks in Villamartin. Callum’s mother Helen told The Mirror that the pair had drunk spirits mixed with cola at a bar, with medics diagnosing that they had pesticides in their bloodstream. Helen, a housing support worker, said: “We don’t know if their drinks were spiked or if it was some accident with cleaning products.”

Callum, who may have to take epilepsy drugs for the rest of his life, said: “I would say to everyone be careful with their drinks.” Investigations are still continuing over what was the cause of the poisonings, whilst over two and a half thousand pounds was raised through a crowd-funding appeal to compensate for lost wages, as Helen and her family stayed in the area, until Callum was discharged from hospital.

THE MOST powerful earthquake to hit Alicante Province in 58 years struck on Monday afternoon, with the epicentre between Albatera and Crevillente. The tremor, which happened at 4.40 pm, lasted for 20 seconds and measured four points three on the Richter Scale, and was felt across a large part of Alicante Province, as well as the adjoining Murcia region. Experts say that it was the fourth largest quake in the area since 1919, but because of its 11-kilometre depth, no structural damage was caused. Besides being felt in the immediate

area including locations like Almoradi, San Fulgencio, Benferri, Orihuela, Dolores and Callosa, the tremor reached areas like Elche, Villena, Sant Joan, El Campello, Aspe, and Santa Pola. Valencian emergency services say that got around a hundred phone calls concerned about the quake, which

Trend Reversed ALICANTE-ELCHE airport has seen the first drop in passenger numbers over an annual July to July period, since 2012. After many consecutive months of increasing growth, the facility at El Altet logged a drop of just over two per cent last month, compared to figures for July 2017, with one point six million passengers using the airport. Over the first seven months of 2018, Alicante-Elche airport

has seen a rise of one point one per cent in passenger numbers compared to 2017, with UK travellers dominating with over 40 per cent of the market. However, domestic flight numbers are accounting for most of the small passenger growth this year, suggesting that tourists are being tempted by cheap holiday packages in North Africa, Turkey, and the Middle East.

As a means of comparison, the earthquake that caused destruction in the Murcia town of Lorca back in May 2011, measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale, followed an hour later by a strong aftershock an hour later of 5.1. Those quakes, however, were just four kilometres below ground.

Fuel thief found A MAN who syphoned off 20 litres of fuel from a lorry being repaired in an Alicante City garage, and who then tried to run over a mechanic who blocked his escape, has been arrested by the National Police. The mechanic called the police last Friday to report the incident after catching the fuel thief in the act, before trying to run him over in his car. The worker threw himself

to the ground to avoid being struck and then filed a report with the authorities. National Police agents didn’t take long to find the getaway car in the area, along with the stolen fuel in the canister, ahead of promptly arresting the 48-year-old thief, who was charged with committing a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation.

POLICE in the northern region of Navarra got themselves an unwanted full house at the weekend, as a car driver tested positive for every drug on their checklist. It was fiesta time in the town of Carcastillo on Saturday, as a resident tipped off the cops that “several people were getting into a car under the influence of alcohol”, at around 8.30 am. Police struck the jackpot with the driver as he tested positive for every drug they look for, namely cannabis, amphetamines/ methamphetamine, cocaine, and opiates. He was also found to be well over the drink-drive limit.

by Alex Trelinksi

The driver ended up with a thousand euro fine and deducted six points from his license for failing the alcohol test, and another thousand euros and six points for failing the drugs test. All of his five passengers, aged in their late twenties, were fined 200 euros each for not wearing a seatbelt, plus an additional three points deduction handed out to the driver, which includes having too many people in his vehicle. Not surprisingly, his points total means that his license has been suspended, and his car has also been impounded by the authority.

Work on the construction of a new business centre aimed at small companies, start-ups and young entrepreneurs in La Nucia, has begun. Foundations were put in place last week on the 827, 000 euro project, which will be known as ‘El Lab’, when the expected completion takes place next spring. The owner of the farm, where the basin is located,

Evaristo used a lassoed rope to hook onto one of the owl’s legs, and pulled it to safety. It was none the worse for wear after being trapped for several hours, and after a health check, it was released back into the locals.

Albir Bike Show Hundreds of custom bike owners and enthusiasts are heading to Albir at the end of the month to parade their magnificent machines through the streets of town. The Costa Blanca Custom Bike Show, now in its eighth year, has become a major event on the resort’s calendar, proving popular with

bike lovers and anyone who likes to get up close and personal with these glorious pieces of engineering. Meeting place and arena for the show, which takes place on Sunday August 26th, is

the towns Eucalyptus Park, just behind the Hotel Kaktus in Avenida Oscar Espla. The event, which comes at the end of a busy month for the town, following on a week after the Albir Fiestas, is free to enter and bikes of all types and makes are welcome to be entered into the show, with prizes given for outstanding machines. The fun kicks off at 10am with the highlight of the day undoubtedly being the spectacular parade of bikes along the seafront and major streets of the town, bringing traffic

to a halt and gasps of awe from onlookers. Throughout the day, a line-up of live rock bands and musicians will entertain the crowds, whilst a full bar service will provide refreshment and food stalls will feed the hungry hordes as they wander around the park, gaze at the amazing bikes and chat to other enthusiasts. Organisers expect a huge turnout for the show, which has grown in popularity year on year and requested visitors to get to the event as early as possible.

HOW DARE THEY?

A BRITISH grandmother has hit out at travel company Thomas Cook, for putting her in a Benidorm hotel which had “too many Spaniards” in it! 81-year-old Freda Jackson from Blackburn had a fortnight booking with a friend in May at the Poseidon Playa Hotel in the Poniente area of Benidorm and has since tried to claim a refund of over eleven-hundred pounds for the holiday or a free trip. Thomas Cook initially offered a 75-pound holiday voucher, but have since made a goodwill offer of over 500 pounds, which Freda and her fellow traveller have still to

decide on whether to accept. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Thomas Cook was hit by a list of complaints from Mrs Jackson including the “steep” location of the hotel, and that not enough was offered for British visitors. She said the tour company had ignored her request to put her in a hotel that was “on the flat” because of mobility issues, and that the holiday date was moved a day forward, which they discovered with just six days remaining before the original flight date to Alicante-Elche airport. But Freda’s big blast came

at the actual fellow-residents at the Poseidon Playa. “The hotel was full of Spanish holidaymakers, and they were so rude. One evening, a Spanish guy nearly knocked me flying and he just walked off without apologising”. “The entertainment in the hotel was all aimed at and focused on Spaniards. Why can’t the Spanish go elsewhere for their holidays?” Despite popular misconceptions in the UK, the Benidorm area attracts more domestic tourists throughout the year, as opposed to foreign visitors.

The trip included a cruise along the River Guadalquivir into the Atlantic Ocean to the vibrant city of Cadiz and excursions to Cordoba, Jerez and Granada as well as tours of Seville, their ship’s “home port”. Highlights of the holiday included a performance by our very own singer/guitarist Bobby (“Valentine”) Johnson, a Spanish-themed evening at which guests were able to dress up in traditional red and yellow attire, and an excellent show put on by the ship’s crew. The party, led by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, travelled by coach from Javea, spending the first night in a hotel in

the heart of Almeria’s old quarter. Members were free to explore the town and visit the sights including the beautiful Almeria Cathedral, before enjoying dinner together in the hotel. The following day, they continued their coach journey towards Malaga, visiting the historic Concepcion botanical gardens, before boarding the ship, MS La Belle de Cadix, moored on the river in Seville. The next day they travelled to Cordoba for a guided tour of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a visit to the unique Mezquita cathedral, which was erected in the 13th century on the site of the Great Mosque of Cordoba. chairs....all you need to bring is your art work for sale! Last year proved to us that many people were attracted to this unique art show. Not only is it a very pleasant spot, there is also a bar open all day, with sandwiches, snacks and other food easily available. Many nationalities were represented both by artists and visitors and the day was rich with experiences and

features. Next port of call was Cadiz and an evening stroll around the city centre, bustling with Saturday night revellers. The following day, the group visited a “ganaderia” (where bulls are bred and raised) and enjoyed a demonstration of horsemanship and bull-herding. Back on board the ship, afterdinner entertainment was provided by traditional Flamenco dancing – and one of our party, former president Peter Allin, couldn’t resist the chance to demonstrate his skills by joining (after much persuasion) the dancers on stage! Members got a taste of the best sherries in Spain on a visit to the Osbourne cellar at El Puerto de Santa Maria – then later that afternoon were treated to an equestrian Flamenco show at a genuine Andalusian hacienda at Isla Minima. There was a chance the following

encounters for all. Participants last year were united in their pleasure at sharing time together, exchanging views and seeing each other’s work, added to which the pleasure of recognition and art work sold, what more could you wish for? day for members to visit the Alhambra pleasure palace and Generalife gardens in Granada, but unfortunately only four of the group decided to take up the challenge of a very early start and a long coach journey … although the formidable four who did make it thoroughly enjoyed the experience! When the ship returned guests to its base, there were further outings to savour, including a visit to the Chocomundo Museo de Chocolate, the largest chocolate museum in Spain, and the Wharf of the Caravels, where guests were able to board fullsize replicas of three wooden ships used in Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in the 15th century. There was also a visit to the Dolmens of Antequera, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered one of the most important engineering and architectural works

of European pre-history, where one of the upright stones weighs 180 tonnes, more than four times the weight of the heaviest stone at Stonehenge. After a last-night stay in the Finca Eslava hotel-spa, the group boarded the coach for the homeward journey, stopping off to visit a sheep-cheese farm, before enjoying an excellent lunch en route back to Javea. Congratulations and thanks to organisers Angela and Tony for a brilliantly-run trip; and members showed their appreciation by clubbing together to present them with a token of their gratitude. Now many of them are looking forward to the next Spanish Culture & Cuisine river cruise …. on the Duoro from Portugal to Spain next April. HELP Vega Baja aims for “green bags”……

Following new legislation that shops (including charities) must charge customers for plastic bags, HELP Vega Baja thought they would look for an alternative solution. After looking for sponsorship, President Michele Masson met up with the José Miguel Perez from Grupo ASV and discovered that both organisations wanted to do what they could to help the environment. “We are keen to do what we can to not only help keep costs down for the charity but to consider the environment too. When we met with José it was wonderful to hear that he shared the same views and we agreed to work together to

produce carrier bags made of paper! Grupo ASV covered the cost of the bags and we were delighted to take delivery of 1,000 bags last week. As charities have to now charge for plastic bags the situation can be a little crazy. For example, we have heard from other charities that in some cases customers insist on new bags as they have to pay rather than accept used bags that are often donated to charities. Sadly this could lead to charities having to purchase plastic bags which obviously negates the whole benefit of the legislation. The sponsorship and support we received from Grupo ASV has been terrific

and the bags are now available in our shop in San Miguel. We still ask that customers bring along their own bags when shopping and any donations for the paper bags will go towards future stocks. The aim of the charity is to go completely “plastic free” for bags and we are working towards this”. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring HELP Vega Baja with any of their projects (bags, leaflets, posters etc), volunteering or if you have a group and you would like the team to come along to give a talk on the charity, please contact their San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 or Michele Masson direct

THE MAX FACTOR

A Jack Russell dog called Max decided to do it a bit of exploring at his London home, but it didn’t exactly go to plan. He ended up stranded on a ledge two floors up after slipping out the window of his home in Maida Vale. However, despite his precarious position, Max

was rescued by a fire crew from Paddington who were called to the building. London Fire Brigade posted a photo on Twitter that showed Max patiently waiting as firefighters launched the rescue other with mission, members of the crew ready to catch up on the ledge below.

Crew manager Sean Sloan said: ‘It seems Max managed to climb out of the window and then realised he couldn’t turn round on the ledge and was well and truly stuck.” “The owner was very distressed, but Max was fine and seemed to enjoy all the attention that he got!”

EXPAT CHALLENGE Tel: 671 935 072

British expatriates have launched a fresh legal challenge against the 2016 referendum, arguing that the result has been invalidated by the Electoral Commission’s ruling on leave campaign spending. The judicial review against the prime minister, Theresa May, has been submitted to the high court in London by the UK in EU Challenge group, which represents Britons living in France, Italy and Spain. It argues that the recent Electoral Commission findings on BeLeave and Vote Leave – which

resulted in two officials being reported to the police and punitive fines being imposed – means that the referendum to leave the EU was not a lawful, fair or free vote. The government is resisting the action on the grounds that it is out of time and that a similar challenge has already been dismissed. Nearly 80% of the estimated 1 to 2 million Britons living overseas in EU countries are of working age or younger. Many fear Brexit will threaten their livelihoods and make it far harder to travel across the

continent. Sue Wilson, who is chair of Bremain in Spain and one four claimants in the action, said: “We hope to demonstrate that you cannot win by cheating. If there is another referendum, there must not be a repeat of the illegal activity witnessed last time around.” “We have not taken back control – we have been put in the hands of those that care more about their careers and political party than their country. The UK deserves better, we deserve better, and we will not stop fighting until we succeed.”

ONE of Spain’s biggest hotel chains is having to slash prices to compete with cheap deals being offered by operators in Turkey and North Africa. The Barceló Hotel Group is Spain’s third-largest hotel chain, with over 50,000 hotel rooms spread across 49 hotels in the country, and spokesman Alvaro Paceco said that they have to reduce the prices of their rooms by up to 15 per cent to deal with the extra competition.

by Simon Russell

“This year has seen more competition with Spain from destinations in North Africa, such as Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt or Turkey,” he said. Hotels in Spain are having to compete with offers from places like three-star resorts on Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean coasts that are up to 73 percent cheaper than the Balearic Islands, according to one study by the Tourism Intelligence

unit of data specialist Mabrian Technologies. The Turkish Lira has also undergone a record nosedive in worth this year – falling by up to 45 per cent in value – leading to a surge in British holidaymakers flocking to the country due to the beneficial exchange rate. That has seen reduced visitor numbers to Spain during the peak summer period, with Benidorm hotels reporting the worst July occupancy rates since 2010.

Sudden Death in Athletes Figures suggest one or two in 100,000 athletes die in this way each year. A leading Italian doctor reported that after running extensive tests on 2,354 elite athletes he shockingly discovered that six had potentially fatal disorders and disqualified them from competing. He presented his findings at a European Society of Cardiology.

Some more statistics: Dr Paulo Adami from the Institute of Sport Medicine and Science of the Italian Olympic Committee, studied athletes short listed for the Olympic Games between 2004 and 2014. Tests included ECG tests (recordings the electrical activity of their hearts) both at rest and during exercise and ultrasound Prevention scans of their hearts. There are many measures we can take to help prevent Worrying signs were picked up in 300 athletes. And after further investigations six athletes with potentially exertional related illness or death: • always exercise in the early morning or evening – never, life-threatening conditions were found which meant they ever in the mid-day sun! could no longer compete. • drink plenty of fluids – never become dehydrated Some 165 were allowed to continue their careers with • avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages annual checks. • do not smoke More than 100 individuals identified as at risk on the • never use anabolic steroids or stimulants in an attempt to initial set of tests were dismissed as having spurious results or improve performance changes that were unlikely to lead to problems later. • inform your family doctor (prior to starting exercise) Heart Screening if there is any family history of heart disease, stroke or sudden death Heart screening is designed to pick up abnormalities that could leave people at risk of sudden death. This thankfully is Any of the following symptoms should be rare but according to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) it is reported to your family doctor without delay: more common in athletes than the general population. Nobody knows why this increased risk exists, though it • chest pain – however mild has been suggested that extensive exercise can sometimes put • excessive, prolonged shortness of breath strain on heart muscles, causing them to enlarge. • unusually rapid or irregular heartbeat It is wrong to take for granted that all athletes must be • prolonged fatigue healthy but predicting which ones may be at risk is not easy. • dizziness or fainting Some may say ‘why aren’t all young people screened for risk, whether they are an athlete or not’ but to do this if not feasible On the other side of the coin…….. as it would pose such a strain on the NHS. However, the BHF Although sudden death in athletes is devastating, it is very recommends that screening be applied to all elite athletes regardless of the sport they practice. This is because of the rare and the benefits of exercise for all ages are recognized by improved lipid levels, glucose (sugar) tolerance, enhanced intensity and stress on their cardiovascular system. However, care must be taken not to stop young, ambitious self-assurance, and improved overall quality of life. athletes from following their dream by worrying them for no If you would like an ECG see the offer below. reason.

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

The 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League got off to a flying start last week with the Premier League when there was 25 goals,8 clean sheets,28 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Everton´s Phil Jagielka who was dismissed by Referee Craig Pawson who just happens to be the same Referee who sent off 2 Chelsea players in their 1st game last Season, Wow talk about setting an early marker down! There was plenty of Fantasy points up for grabs and the 1st team to take advantage was Nikki´s Liverpool 94 who rattled up 60 points which took them to the top of the Fantasy League by one point over Winnie´s team Le Hombre Rioja. Both teams are full of Liverpool Players who enjoyed a walk in the Park when they beat west Ham 4-0 at Anfield. Lee´s team Athletico Higgo are right on their tails and are only 1 point behind them.Down at the bottom of the table Susan´s Brazilian Hooligans are joined by John´s Dodgy Dribblers, both on 7 points. The two Ladies are also top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section just ahead of M.A,K. Forever and last Season´s winner of this League Pauline´s Vodka Army who are joint 3rd. At the opposite end of the Table Kim´s Ginger United have got off to a bad start and are 4 points adrift of last Season´s serial Wooden Spoon Winner Laura´s Legends. William & Harry are newcomers to the Fantasy League and they have taken to it like a Duck to water has they have wasted no time in reaching the Summit of our Junior League with a 4 point advantage over young Olly´s team Olly F.C. Roo & Woos Wombles are holding

all the young ones up at the bottom and are trailing Harrison´s Boden Boys by 3 points. The Golden Boot League this Year is being sponsored Rachell at Accross the Costas. With 25 goals hitting the back of the net it meant it was a good start for this Division which once again Nikki´s Liverpool 94 took advantage by making the top spot for the 2nd time this week with a 5 point margin over 3 teams who are in joint 2nd place. Nick´s Black Cats,Chris´s Anirtak Hotspurs and La Catalan. At the very foot of the table 8 teams have yet to score. Three teams are going into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are our highest scoring team which was Liverpool 94 who clocked up 60 points and Two teams who got a very creditable lowest score of 7 points Brazilian Hooligans & Dodgy Dribblers. Manager of the Month for August is being kindly sponsored by Linda at the Bar Tapas in Albir which is situated right on the front in Albir who provide a special International Menu as well as serving up very tasty Tapas. With only one week gone the top four is the same as the Main League.5th place is Carl´s cheekly named team Liverpool are better than City while also in contention is Chris´s P.G.Tips for this fabulous meal for 2 at the Bar Tapas. At the moment I´m having a few problems with my computer so I ask you to be patient as we form our Mini - Leagues. This Season we have over 200 teams competing for our very prostigious A.F.F.L. Trophy. So Folks fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the Rollercoaster ride of the Premier League and 25 th A.F.F.L.

Brothers together British twin brothers Adam and Simon Yates will race together at the Vuelta a Espana for Australian team Mitchelton-Scott. Simon was scheduled to take part in the final Grand Tour of the season and will be the team’s leader in the race. Adam also decided to ride to add to his experience of competing in multiple big races after a modest Tour de France. He will ride in support of his 26-yearold sibling in the race, which starts in Malaga on August 25th.. “The Vuelta a Espana wasn’t originally on my programme,” Adam said. “But, together with the management, we

ADIOS ALONSO

by Alex Trelinski

came to the decision that doing the Vuelta after the Tour would be another good chance to get some experience in riding multiple Grand Tours in one year.” Adam, who was fourth in the 2016 Tour de France as he won the young riders’ classification, finished in 29th - more than an hour behind winner Geraint Thomas in this year’s race. Thomas and last year’s winner Chris Froome are almost certainly going to give La Veulta a miss, with this year’s race not coming to the Costa Blanca, but further south it will be taking in the Murcia region and Mar Menor.

La Liga Returns THE SERIOUS domestic business of La Liga returns this weekend, with champions Barcelona kicking off their title defence this Saturday night against Alaves at the Camp Nou. Barca romped to the title last season, as Ernesto Valderde’s side left the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid trailing in their wake. There’s one other bonus for Barca with Cristiano Ronaldo’s shock move from Real to Juventus, meaning that Lionel Messi will no longer face off in one of the most thrilling personal rivalries in footballing history. The Argentinian talisman has some new responsibilities this season as he has been

named as the club’s new captain. Ronaldo-less Madrid entertains Getafe on Sunday night and has ex-Chelsea keeper, Thibaut Courtois to boast as one of their summer signings. The tastiest looking match comes on Monday night as Valencia entertain Atletico Madrid, with French striker Kevin Gamiero joining Valencia from Atletico, and he is set to partner loanee, Belgian World Cup star, Michy Batshuayi up front. After last season’s vast improvement, Valencia are certainly making their intentions clear, and need a winning start to make a serious push to break up Barca along with Atletico and Real at the top.

SPAIN’S two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the season. The McLaren driver will end a career that began with a debut for Minardi at the Australian Grand Prix of 2001. Alonso, 37, who is competing in his 17th F1 season, won the 2005 and 2006 championships when racing for Renault. “After 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport it’s time for me to make a change and move on,” he said. “I made this decision some months ago and it was a firm

one. There are still several Grand Prix to go this season, and I will take part in them with more commitment and passion than ever,” he added. “Let’s see what the future brings; new exciting challenges are around the corner. I’m having one of the happiest times ever in my life but I need to go on exploring new adventures.” Alonso has in recent years branched out into other series and in June he won the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race at his first attempt.

Your Weekend Starts Here! ENGLAND allrounder Ben Stokes is free to resume his international career unhindered by any legal worries after a Bristol jury found the 27-year-old Durham player not guilty of affray on Tuesday. Stokes played in England’s first test win over India at Edgbaston but missed out on the second test at Lords because of his trial. The England selectors initially decided not to include him in the squad for the third test which starts at Trent Bridge tomorrow, but after the not guilty verdict, they announced that Stokes would join the squad.. Stokes denied the affray charge following the fracas between a group of men last September. Ryan Ali, 28 - who was knocked unconscious in the brawl - was also found not guilty of the same charge. The fight happened several hours after England had played a oneday international against the West Indies at the County Ground in Bristol. Stokes told the jury he

had “stepped in” to defend two gay men who were being verbally abused but then had to defend himself from Mr Ali and Ryan Hale, 27, who was threatening violence. The matter is not over yet for the player, as he is now set to face an England and Wales Cricket Board independent disciplinary committee, where is likely to be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
