Pension Values ‘too generous’ says regulator Defined Benefit schemes have received their fair share of publicity in the past few years. But more recently, they have made the headlines for a different reason. The Pensions Regulator are now becoming increasingly concerned about the overly generous transfer payments on offer. Why? Well in simple terms they are concerned that the high transfer values on offer are leading to many members transferring out of the scheme and this could jeopardise the pensions of those remaining. The intervention by the Pensions Regulator could force all such pension schemes to reconsider how much they offer people who take their pensions elsewhere.
some pensions companies are taking advantage of as many are keen to get pension liabilities off their books, and therefore transfer values have been running at record highs. In the past the regulators have always focused on the individual who is considering the transfer. They have put several steps in place that must be followed by someone who is transferring their pension. For example, if the value of the Defined Benefits scheme is £30,000 or above you needto have appropriately regulated advice. This rule is there to protect the individual and make sure they are fully aware of the pros and cons of transferring, however now, the Pensions Regulator is arguing that overpaying those leaving the scheme may diminish its assets to such an extent that it may be difficult to fund the pensions of those who stay put.
Over the last year alone, savers have transferred some £21bn out of DB schemes, after being offered very generous assessments of what their accrued pension rights are worth. Schemes offer “cash equivalent” At Chorus we have seen ‘cash transfer values on the basis of factors such as interest rates, but also have equivalent’ transfer values fluctuate some discretion. Flash Flood Tragedy
A BRITISH couple were among the victims of a devastating flood that hit Mallorca on Tuesday night. At least nine people are believed to have died when torrential rainstorms deluged the town of Sant Llorenc, some 50 kilometres east of the capital Palma. The deputy mayor of the town, Antonia Bauza, confirmed to Cadena SER radio that two of the victims were British. The two British victims were reportedly in a taxi

when they were caught in a flash flood, with the driver also reported as missing. As the Weekender went to press, their identities had not been revealed, with the UK Foreign Office seeking information about what has happened. About eight inches of rain fell in four hours on Tuesday evening on parts of the island, with the damage caused said to be running into millions of euros.

Man dies after home collapse FROM FRONT PAGE
A BRITISH man who was rescued from a collapsed building in Playa Flamenca last month has died in hospital from an unrelated condition. 58-year-old Malcolm Lawrence was trapped on the top floor of the duplex on Calle Limón in the Laguna III residential area on the morning of Wednesday, September 26th, before he was freed by emergency services. He spent two days in Torrevieja Hospital, before being discharged Mr Lawrence, who used to work for the West Yorkshire Police in Dewsbury, moved to the area over 16 years ago but had only resided on Calle Limón for some nine months, where he lived alone. He had been suffering from emphysema and was readmitted to Torrevieja Hospital on Sunday lunchtime, before passing away on Tuesday morning. His shock death has
by Alex Trelinski
stunned his neighbours, who are still trying to come to terms with the fact that they are without a home because of the collapse and evacuation of adjoining properties, which will almost certainly have to be demolished. A close friend of Mr Lawrence told The We e k e n d e r : “The news over Malcolm has shocked us at what is a terrible time for everybody. A doctor told me that there is no evidence that his death was
caused by what happened a fortnight ago, but in my opinion, it could hardly have helped him”. The Weekender has had exclusive access to the heart-breaking story of the residents affected by the collapse and the anguish that it has brought them, including no access to their possessions, along with the practical problems of being homeless, and in most cases, with little or no money to pay for the accommodation they need.
EXCLU
How would you cope? ALEX TRELINSKI exclusively talks to the British residents left homeless and not helped by a system unfit for purpose.
THE LIVES of a group of Playa Flamenca residents changed dramatically in just a few fateful moments at 8.00 am on Wednesday, September 26th, when a duplex partially collapsed on Calle Limón in Laguna III. It was a miracle that nobody died or was seriously injured, but the mental scars are still very much there over a fortnight later, and as reported [See left] in The Weekender, one of the rescued residents died earlier this week due to an ongoing condition. Eight homes (one of which was unoccupied) have been blocked off and are almost certainly going to be demolished due to safety
issues, leaving the British, German, Norwegian and Chinese residents homeless and with little or no money to live on, let alone having the funds to rent replacement accommodation. “If we didn’t have friends, we’d be living in our car”, was a poignant comment from one of the homeless residents. “I have been emotionally traumatised and gone through hell”, said another. “I have barely been able to stop shaking since it happened”. Their predicament is not helped by the financial fact that those who have mortgages on their properties are still having to pay them, as well as being hit by Suma payments! All of their personal possessions are still in each home(“Our lives are in there”, I was told by one property owner), with no access permitted at all. When the story broke last
month, it left me wondering how would I cope if faced with a similar picture? My honest answer was that I doubt whether I could deal with such a scenario, but after meeting up with a number of the affected residents this week, I left with mixed feelings of admiration as to how they have coped in the face of personal adversity, but also with disappointment over how the system (assuming you can call it a system) has just not delivered for them. I spoke with four of the British residents from Calle Limón earlier in the week (they asked for their surnames not to be published), and they did not even have to utter a word to convey how they have suffered. Their gaunt faces showed me everything that I needed to know, but within a few minutes, they started to relax and to tell me what has or hasn’t happened in the last
SIVE two weeks. “We are still in shock and our lives are in limbo,” said one of them. Our meeting was clouded with the news of the death of Malcolm Lawrence, but then they briefed me over the “Catch 22” situation that they have found themselves in. The overriding initial problem is that the insurance companies are refusing to pay out even a small trickle of cash to keep everybody going because an official surveyor’s report is needed for them to take action, and yes, you’ve guessed it, that report has not been done. “Within 30 days” is what the homeowners were told, as they said that Orihuela Council; the Local Police; and the Urbanisation Community Insurer have already done reports. The displaced residents told me that they have no idea as to what caused the collapse and unhelpful speculation and guesswork has added to their anguish, coupled with a complete lack of information given to them.
After being made homeless, some stayed in a Torrevieja hotel for a few days(paid for by the Laguna III urbanisation), whilst others stayed with friends. They had virtually no items with them. One lady told me:- “I had to go to a bank wearing a nightdress to get out what money I could”. I was also told that looters had been spotted at some of their homes and that they were unhappy with the security that was being provided. As for their homeless predicament, the group spoke to the British Consulate in Alicante, who said that they were sympathetic, but that they could do nothing because it was an internal Spanish matter. Talks were held with Orihuela International Residents councillor, Sofía Álvarez, and the residents hope that she will be able to help them, and are waiting to hear from her again. They were full of praise for the local community who raised money for them, as
FRIDAY 12TH OCTOBER 2018
well as clubs and associations providing them with basics like clothes. It seemed clear to me though that this group is rightly stressed out and are hitting closed doors in their attempt to have some basic dignity restored to them and to have their own roof back over their heads. “We need a solicitor to fight our corner and some kind of independent survey” said David. Needless to say, they both come at a price, and money is something that the residents
barely have. Incredibly, they showed an unselfish concern over the state of other properties next to theirs, and also across the urbanisation. “If it happened to us, what about our neighbours?” The Weekender will keep following this story, and if you can offer any help to this group, then please contact us. A 32-year-old man has been arrested by the National Police in Alicante for manipulating slot machines to steal over €2,000 in cash. The incident came to light after the manager of a gaming room in the city cashed up the machine and found that it was €2,600 short on the amount it should be holding. He looked at CCTV and found the man, a regular customer, acting suspiciously

The occupants of the house were unaware of the incident until they were woken by the police to check they were OK. A 25-yearold Romanian has been charged with attempted robbery with force.

It appears that he had been using a device to allow him to constantly re-use the same coin, allowing him to fraudulently take 1,000, 200 and 850 Euros on three separate sessions. The police felt they had sufficient evidence to arrest the man who has been placed at the disposal of the Alicante Court of Instruction.

The X-rated clip, which has already

MILLION EURO
GANG
by Simon Russell
SIX PEOPLE who are accused of stealing items worth a million euros from a house belonging to an elderly woman have been arrested in the Murcia region and Alicante Province. The crooks were rounded up in Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo in Murcia, as well as in Alcoy, where the robbery took place. The organised gang of three men and three women from Spain, Ecuador, and Columbia committed the break-in back in May, with the 97-year-old resident not initially at home at the time. The thieves broke into

the safe, and removed cash, six gold bars, and jewellery, before being surprised by the owner and the building caretaker, who had noticed smoke coming from the residence. They were bundled into and locked in the bathroom, as the gang finished their work, and made their escape. The gang have been charged with a big sheet of offences including robbery with violence; illegal detention; money laundering; drug trafficking; and breaking immigration laws.
A man in La Pobla de Vallbona (Valencia) is facing 13 years in jail if found guilty of drugging and abusing a domestic employee who worked for him. Prosecutor’s in Valencia told how the man added a substance to a hamburger, probably cocaine and other unknown drugs, causing the victim to feel very ill. He then raped her and took photographs, including him abusing her while wearing bondage gear. The court heard how the spikes on this outfit also caused her pelvic

injuries. The woman worked as a housekeeper and is alleged to be the sister of a prostitute the defendant used, but there are no allegations of any prior relationship between the victim and the accused. In turn, the man has offered contradictory alibis, saying initially he was with friends on the night of the attack and then that he was with the victim but they did not have sex. The case continues this week.

Fiesta guidelines tightened up DESPITE, or possibly because of, the Valencia Fallas being one of the world’s great pyrotechnic displays it is not to everyone’s taste. Accordingly, new guidelines have been put in place for the fiesta next March. The Local Police have always had the power to fine people who let off fireworks out of designated

hours. However this year they have been advised to ensure they use these powers rather than turning a blind eye as has often happened before. The ecological effects have also been discussed and 2019 will be the last year that single-use plastics for items
such as cups and straws will be allowed. However, fiesta goers are being encouraged to use more environmentally friendly alternatives before the ban comes into effect in 2020. The number of public toilets is also being increased significantly which it is hoped will reduce the problems of people urinating in the streets and doorways.
Dutch dopers GUARDIA Civil agents have this week uncovered what could be one of Europe’s leading marijuana plantation chains. In a major operation, five Dutch nationals were arrested in Alicante, La Nucia and El Campello along with a Moroccan man. The operation started in August after witnesses saw what appeared to be bin bags full of marijuana being removed from a property in San Juan and reported the incident. The Guardia raided the property and found a pistol and the remains of about a thousand marijuana plant. However, the occupants had
by Simon Russell
clearly fled in a hurry. The investigation next led them to a house in La Nucia which was stocked with gear such as halogen lamps sufficient to set up another 20 properties as drug farms. They estimated that the gang could have grown about 80,000 plants a year, producing about 10 tons of buds. More plants and equipment were later discovered in residencies in Mutxamell, El Rebolledo and El Campello. The agents have deduced that one property was being used to germinate the seeds and
when they were starting to grow they were distributed to the other properties to continue growing. The drugs were then sent to a base in the Netherlands for distribution to Germany and Belgium. The houses also had a sophisticated system for stealing the huge amount of power needed without making it obvious to passersby or the supplier. The Dutch nationals, four men and a woman, along with the Moroccan man have been charged with illegal possession of arms, defrauding electricity, membership of a criminal gang and drug trafficking.
Guilty of child rape
A Colombian national has been sentenced to 12 years in jail by the Provincial Court of Valencia for raping the 13-year-old daughter of his former partner. The incident happened in 2014 when the man went to his ex-wife’s

house to visit another younger child, who he is the father of. The victim was on her own in the house and the court heard how he forced her to have unprotected sex then offered
her €5 to keep quiet about the matter. However, the girl told her mother, leading to the prosecution and guilty verdict last week. The defendant has also been ordered to pay €3,000 compensation and legal costs.
Police quick on the scene
TWO men have been arrested after the violent robbery of a 54-year-old woman in Alicante City last weekend. They were targeting her necklace and bag but when the victim resisted she was thrown to the ground and the thieves

then fled with the stolen items. A passer-by contacted the police on 091 and a nearby patrol was almost immediately on the scene. Other agents soon joined the pursuit and the suspects
were quickly detained. A search found that the items reported as stolen were hidden in their clothing and they were returned to their owner. The accused, both Algerian nationals, have been charged with robbery and violence.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a recent assault on a teacher in Sagunt (Valencia). As reported in last week’s edition of “The Weekender” the parents of a child who was being disruptive were

security, saying this is not the first time such an incident has happened. The Ministry of Education said that security is being reviewed after a meeting between the school’s board of directors and the local school inspector.

Sickening sight A COSTA BLANCA couple travelling to Bristol Airport on a Ryanair flight from AlicanteElche airport got a nasty version of priority booking, when they discovered dry vomit on their plane seats. Fred and Sheila McInerney were flying from Alicante Province at the end of last month, when they made the grim discovery. They found their allotted seats and seatbelts smothered in dry vomit, and the couple claim that when they asked for it to be cleaned they were told that would delay the departure. They claimed the cabin crew blocked the aisle and asked them to move out of the way when they refused to sit on the vomitstained seat. “There was a row of empty seats at the emergency exit, but they didn’t offer them to us,” said the Brits. A Ryanair representative said that all aircraft are ‘cleaned thoroughly’ by professionals at the end of every day, and that the flight attendants clean the cabin and toilets at the end of every flight. The company insisted that Fred and Sheila were ‘transferred to other seats’ and that the ‘area in question’ was cleaned up.

Bike friendly Benidorm On a weekend that saw more than 300 cyclists turn out to celebrate the resorts fifteenth Bike Day, with a cycle tour around Benidorm, city officials unveiled plans to create a further 11 kilometres of cycle lanes by March next year. This next phase of work, will concentrate on roads around the Levante area of the city, with tenders for the construction work needing to be received by October 25th. The extension of the current ‘Ciclo Ciclista’, work on which should begin in November, will bring the total of designated

cycle to 80 kilometres on completion. A total of just under one million euros has been earmarked for the work, with 400,000 coming via a grant from Feder funds. Launching details of the scheme, Councillor Gonzales de Zarate, explained that much of the work will coincide with the upcoming upgrade of the Levante area’s main artery, the Avenida Mediterraneo dual carriageway. In keeping with the current design used on
highways elsewhere in the resort, the red cycle lane will run through the centre of the main roads, rather than the sides, a plan that proved controversial, when they were unveiled around eighteen months ago. Benidorm mayor, Toni Pérez and councillors, Arturo Cabrillo, Lourdes Caselles and Bernardo Mira all participated in last Sunday’s Bike day tour, which had the support of the Table Benidorm Pro-Bicicleta, as well as
the support of the city’s cycling clubs and numerous sponsors. Councillor Zarate, explained that the city hopes to persuade future
generations to use bikes rather than cars and their aim is to have more than 100 kilometres of cycle lanes across the streets Benidorm eventually.
Criminals getting stranglehold
VIDEO footage has emerged of a worrying new trend among young criminal gangs, who have been using strangulation techniques to rob people, often tourists. The footage was taken in Burjassot
(Valencia province) and shows a Chinese tourist being mugged by three youngsters, at least one of them known to be a minor. The victim fought back and was put in an aggressive stranglehold before
the young thugs ran off with his mobile phone. In this instance the CCTV footage allowed the National Police to identify and charge the three assailants who are awaiting trial. However authorities
have warned that using neck holds to restrain people is extremely dangerous and could result in severe injury or death, especially if the victim is not allowed to breathe for any length of time.
UK press decry Spanish police tactics
SECTIONS of the UK press have denounced the actions of Spanish police after footage emerged of British holidaymakers being set about with batons by Guardia Civil officers. The video, filmed in Magaluf by a British bar worker, shows two men looking the worse for wear having an argument which a girl appears to be trying to stop. A Guardia agent then hits one of the men

on the back twice with a baton. Following this, he hits the woman with the baton, which is what has enraged the press as it appeared she was actually trying to defuse things. “The Sun”, not renowned for a soft approach to crime, called the incident “bully boy tactics” and “horrifying”, focusing on the striking of the young woman. Danielle
A worried husband in Crevillent contacted the Guardia Civil after his wife was several hours late from picking up their son in her car. He had been trying to contact her on her mobile without success and went to the Guardia at about 1 am. They drove up and down her usual route before spotting a car dangling off a steep incline,
Finlay Brooks, who took the video, said “I’ve got them on video for once” saying that while the local police in Magaluf was excellent the Guardia was a different matter. The missing woman was inside and unharmed; she said she had been worried about leaving the car due to the steepness of the terrain and the dark while her mobile wasn’t working. The 47-year-old was safely removed from her vehicle which was retrieved by a recovery vehicle later.
Living on the edge Courtyard rapist detained A 22-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of raping a woman and stealing €25 from her in Valencia city. The events occurred at about 5 am on Tuesday morning when the pair were sat in the courtyard of an apartment block having a drink. According to the victim,
the man suddenly attacked her, held her mouth shut so she could not cry out for help and raped her. He then took the cash from her purse and entered the building. The noise had woken residents who contacted the police; they arrived and
heard the victims statement. After interviewing several people they found the alleged aggressor asleep in an apartment he shares with his father. The woman was treated at a nearby health centre and has been examined by a forensic doctor.

Investigation opened into

ELECTRIC ACTION THE SPANISH cabinet has announced measures aimed at reducing electricity bills which are among the highest in Europe and are often criticised for reducing business competitiveness and consumer’s purchasing power. The government will scrap a controversial levy on solar power(the socalled “sun tax”).affecting households and small businesses, Energy and Environment Minister Teresa Ribera said, making
by Alex Trelinski
it easier for consumers to erect panels for their own use. “This country is finally freeing itself from the great absurdity, scorned by most international observers, that is the ‘sun tax’,” Ribera told a news conference. The changes also include suspending for six months a seven per cent levy on power generation which companies like Iberdrola had mainly passed on to consumers.
Along with the suspension of a levy on hydrocarbon use for electricity production, this should cut average household bills by around four per cent, Ribera said, adding, “It is a relief measure, which will give us six months to work on big structural measures.” The savings though are a comparative drop in the ocean as wholesale electricity prices have shot up this year, with consumers having to pay higher bills.
A major land and air search for a young missing woman in northern Valencia have been called off after a body was found on Monday. The search for the 35-yearold was reported missing on Sunday near Almenara in the Castellon province,

confirmed to be that of the missing woman whose name has been withheld but is known locally and on social media. The judicial police of Castellon have taken over the investigation; details of how she died have not been released at this stage.

BUSINESS WORRIES UK manufacturing exports have slumped to their lowest level in two years, with anxiety among businesses hitting its highest level since the Brexit vote. The British Chambers of Commerce(BCC) survey said a slowdown in manufacturing exports in the last quarter was a major cause for concern. Sales to overseas buyers were predicted to receive a boost from the fall in the value of the pound but a small bump now appears to have subsided. Suren Thiru, BCC head of economics, said manufacturing remained a weak spot for the UK economy with exports falling sharply over the last quarter. “Brexit uncertainty and the increasing cost of imported raw

materials is weighing on the UK’s external position – further evidence that the persistent weakness in sterling is doing more harm than good,” he said. A separate survey of finance bosses found that worries over the long-term impact of Brexit are mounting. Among chief financial officers polled by Deloitte, 79 per cent said they expect the long-term business environment to be worse after leaving the EU, up from 75 per cent in the second quarter of 2018 and the third successive rise. Meanwhile, the potential failure of Brexit negotiations and “unsettled” politics pose a risk to world economic growth, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned.
A recent report shows that Elche is very much the industrial powerhouse for Alicante, easily outstripping the provincial capital. Based on measures such as patent applications and volume of output over the period between 2009 and 2016 Elche leads in both innovation and production. The report from the Elche Bar Association
by Simon Russell
shows that Elche registered 184 patents compared to Alicante’s 119. The small municipality of San Vicente del Raspeig also registered more patents than Alicante with 143, mainly due to the presence of the University of Alicante and the research that emerges from there. The report concludes that
Elche is a more industrial and innovative city and produces patents to protect its products such as those for fashion and science. Alicante meanwhile is more service-based and has less need to patent their activities. Elche’s per capita productivity is measured at 40%, well beyond the 24% in Alicante, another key measure.

Why should you invest in a Spanish Compliant Investment product?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Like any investment product, there are the Good, the Bad and the Ugly! Spanish Compliant bonds if set up correctly, so that they hold daily traded, liquid, UCITS or SICAV approved funds are tax efficient, simple to use/administer and are cost effective. The Hacienda, part of the Ministerio de Economía y Hacienda, or the Spanish taxman to you and I, has granted significant tax advantages for investment plans held by resident Expats; if those plans meet certain conditions that make them Spanish tax Compliant. The advantages are considerable and this is further emphasised by the fact that the Hacienda treat non-Spanish compliant investments negatively with extra reporting (Modelo 720) and punitive taxation on an annual basis.
What can be done to avoid this?
First look at all of the investments you have that may not be tax efficient in Spain, then look to see if there are Capital gains or other taxation implications to take into consideration prior to closing them down. If these are negligible then seriously look at transferring to a Spanish Tax compliant investment. Spanish Compliant Investment plans offer a direct tax advantage. Specifically designed plans for Expatriates in Spain they will offer income tax and succession tax advantages. Additional advantages of Spanish compliant investments: •
They do not need to be declared on Modelo 720.

Post war plastics Birthday coming ashore party among 20 road fatalities A vivid reminder of the longevity of plastics was washed up on a beach in the UK this week, a washing liquid bottle that is at least 47 years old. The bottle is labelled with pre-decimalised pricing, meaning that it at least 47 years old, decimalisation being introduced in 1971. It is still in remarkably good condition and was found amongst seaweed at Burnham in Somerset. Some plastic bottles can take 450 years to break

down and the UK alone produces 170 million tonnes of them a year, only about a third of which is recycled. Microplastics are now starting to be
found in fish, tap water, honey, sugar and salt and have become part of the food chain without anyone knowing their impact on human health, especially over the long term.
TWO pedestrians and 18 people on board a limousine died after a horrific crash in New York state earlier this week. The group were due to travel to a 30th birthday party on a bus but when this broke down the limo was organised as a replacement. Witnesses said that the vehicle went
by Simon Russell
over a T junction and crashed into a parked SUV, killing all 18 on board and two passers-by. Initial reports are that the limo driver did not have the licence required to drive the outsized vehicle and that the limousine had recently been classified as
unfit for operation by the state vehicle inspectors. The dead included four sisters, two brothers, three young couples and the birthday celebrant. The crash is the worst involving any form of transportation in the USA in almost a decade since a plane crash in 2009 killed 50.
Global warming debate heats White tiger saved up from death row
A group of scientists have drawn what they call “a line in the sand” regarding global warming and what governments can do to stop it, or at least slow it down. A cross section of 91 experts from 40 countries have concluded that we have 12 years to limit climate change to an increase of 1.5C; beyond this level damage could be catastrophic in the forms of floods, extreme heat and drought. 6,000 studies on climate change were examined and it was concluded that a 2C rise could wipe out half of the worlds natural habitats and 99% of more sensitive ones such as coral reefs. Sea level rises would impact on 10
by Matthew Richards
million people and marine stocks would be devastated due to rises in acids. To limit the rise to 1.5C actions taken would need to include reforestation, shutting down of the fossil fuel industry, massive technological change and different use of land. Although climate change deniers are almost non-existent in the scientific community - and the few dissenting voices usually have vested interests - there are some high profile deniers in the non-scientific community. President Trump is probably the best known and certainly the most important, withdrawing
the USA from the Paris agreement which was set to tackle the problem. Maybe just as worryingly Brazil may well elect Jair Bolsonaro as it’s next prime minister. He is an extreme right winger in the Trump populist mould and has promised to open the rainforest to “business” if he is elected. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro have been accused of actions that will cause unimaginable damage to the planet for short term financial gains and votes. Many people are also quick to point out that when the predicted catastrophes really start to take hold, probably in around 2050, neither man will be around to reap the cost of their actions.

Calling all coastal cleaners THE fourth “Per una mar neta” event in Denia is to be held on 21 October, the towns Environmental Department have announced. The day, which translates as “for a cleaner sea”, is open to anyone who wants to take part and involves cleaning at three levels. On the beach, which will be where most volunteers will be working, the seabed with special diving teams and the

surface of the sea with teams of small boats, kayakers and paddle boarders. Volunteers need to gather at the roundabout by the south breakwater at 9am and will be assigned a cleaning zone and given bags and gloves. The pick-up will finish at midday and then the collected rubbish will be sorted and classified for
recycling purposes etc. Those taking part will finish the day with a complementary and well deserved drink. Areas targeted for this years big clean are the Almadrava, Cap de San Antoni marine reserve, Les Rotes coast, Cova Tallada, the southern breakwater and Playa Les Marines. To sign up email deniaviva@ayto-denia.es or by calling 96 578 0100 (extension 2011).

RECENTLY released photos and documents have highlighted the uncomfortable truth about the relationship between parts of Spain and former German Nazis. One picture shows a reception in Denia featuring the then mayor, Spain’s Tourist Minister and Gerhard Bremer, a prominent Nazi who had been convicted of war crimes. The photo was taken during the filming of Hollywood blockbuster “East of Java” in Denia in 1967, an early effort to promote then fascist Spain as a tourist destination.
SS Officer Bremer had spent six years in prison for numerous war crimes and upon his release settled in Denia, an area popular with ex-Nazis, largely due to Franco’s sympathy with the Hitler regime. While most kept a low profile Bremer started a local business empire, including the establishment of Les Rotes campsite and the Marina Alta’s first complex of apart-hotels. He received numerous tributes and awards from Denia Town Hall for his economic activity, once described as
a “pioneer who launched the tourist machinery of the Costa Blanca”. Bremer was also unusual in that he refused to condemn the Nazi regime, continually proclaiming his admiration for Hitler and his followers and moaning about their “misrepresentation” globally. To give an idea of the local political undercurrent at that time politicians wrote of a gathering at Bremer’s house and how impressed they were to see him photographed with Hitler, a picture that took pride of place in the ex SS Officer’s living room
More parking problems on the horizon THE plot of land that is currently being used as a free car park on Calle Virgen de la Macarena is being closed to cars, Benidorm Town Hall announced on their website this week. The plot is owned by the Sareb

“bad bank” which originally gave permission for is to be used as car park but has now withdrawn that as it intends to sell the 720 m2 plot. This means that the
Foites-Colonia Madrid area, already notoriously bad for parking, will lose another 30 or so spaces. Even before this announcement lack of public parking was the most common cause of complaints by residents in the area.
The Spanish delegation in Turkey holds working meetings with TUI and the mayor of Antalya.
DELEGATIONS from Benidorm have been in Turkey and Scandinavia, aiming to promote the resort and learn from other destinations. The town’s Tourist Foundation took their Visit Benidorm promotion to Stockholm’s Senior Massan travel fair which usually generates around 15,000 visitors. They have also held meetings with travel journalists from Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark raising their profile in popular Scandinavian magazines and newspapers. Research shows
by Matthew Richards
that Scandinavian tourists have a very high purchasing power and resorts are keen to attract them. Meanwhile Mayor Toni Perez joined other delegates from Benidorm and the Costa Blanca in the Turkish town of Antalya. Informally known as the “Turkish Benidorm” Antalya is the busiest destination in the main tourist region of Turkey and, like Benidorm, transformed itself in the 1970s from a small village to a mega resort over
just a few years. Mr Perez and his colleagues have met with his mayoral counterpart in the town and representatives of TUI (formerly Thompson), the biggest tour operator in the area. The meeting was an exchange of ideas that hopefully both parties could benefit from. The exodus of holidaymakers to some of Turkey’s five star all inclusive resorts has been seen as one of the reasons why the Costa Blanca, and Benidorm, has had a disappointing summer season.

Budget hits health care FOR economic reasons the Red Cross in Javea has had to stop its 24-hour emergency service in the Marina Alta town. ALTEA’S Department of Education and the Romanian Language Institute are once again collaborating to provide a course on Romania’s language, history and culture. The course is not costing the town anything and is funded by the Ministry of Education and the Romanian embassy. It is aimed primarily at children of Romanian origin or ancestry at all levels of education who want to know more about the country. Many of these children will have been born in Spain and have lost touch with their roots while others will have been here for most of their lives.
Fiesta time in El Campello ALTHOUGH the Moors and Christians fiestas in El Campello started officially in mid-week, the main events are coming up this weekend. If you were up early this morning (12 October) you may have caught the landing of the Moorish forces on Platja del Carrer la Mar and the battle for the conquest of the town. There is music today at noon around Calle Mayor and there is a parade this evening at 7 pm, setting out from Calle Sant Joan Bosco. Saturday starts with an 8.30 am parade with the festeras entrance at midday and retreat at 8 pm followed
by a live DJ at Castell Fester. Things commence once again at 8 am on Sunday, later there is Mass at 11 am followed by the flower and fruit offerings at midday. The final Mascletá is at 2 pm on Calle Alcalde Pepe Carratalá (you may want to avoid this area if you have pets who are scared by fireworks). The final procession is at 8 pm with all participants starting out from Plaza de la Iglesia. The fiesta finishes with a fireworks display at the Virgen de los Desamparados (Calle Carratalá). The return of the flags to Castell Fester signifies the official end of this year’s event.

Postbag Dear Sirs,
I do hope that the authorities will reconsider their decision to shut down the Tiki Bar in Benidorm, especially with so much goodwill and support for it to continue. I’ve had loads of fun there mixing in with the British tourists of all ages and backgrounds, and surely this must be good business for Benidorm. Even at this late stage, there has to be some kind of sensible compromise that keeps everybody happy, be it customers or local residents, who deserve some “quiet” time. Mike Lewis, Benidorm. What a joke politicians are in the Orihuela area and across the region, in the way that the much-promised Emergency Centre for the Orihuela Costa is still failing to appear.

Our Complex Canine Companions As any dog lover will tell you, our canine companions are endlessly fascinating creatures. As well as being our best friends, they are an engineering miracle by Mother Nature with amazing abilities that we often take for granted. Dogs are highly sensitive to motion and because of the location of their eyes, they have excellent peripheral vision. A typical dog has a visual range of 240 to 250 degrees - 60-70 degrees more than human beings! Their highly-tuned sense of smell is legendary and is 100 times more sensitive than their owners. In fact dogs have between 220 million and two billion smell neurons in their noses, while a person only has about five million on the surface of the nasal cavity. They also have far superior hearing and are able to detect sounds of significantly higher frequency than the range of human hearing. People can hear sound with frequencies up to 20,000 Hz, while dogs can hear up to 40,000 Hz. The canine ear is also controlled by 17 different

muscles, which means it can adjust to hear sounds coming from many different directions and angles. As far as vision is concerned, dogs can not only see colour but it can also impact their behaviour. Dogs see a smaller palette of colour than humans and mainly see yellow and blue. Both orange and green are seen as yellow and they cannot see red at all perceiving it only as a dark grey or black. Dog behaviour is a subject of frequent discussion among owners and some of the commonest aspects include barking, tail wagging and mischievous bone burying. Tail wagging is the most characteristic and common dog behaviour - but it doesn’t always mean our canine pals are happy. The behaviour is more a mood indicator and the height the tail is held demonstrates how confident or submissive the animal feels. Experts at Butcher’s Pet Care have compiled this tail-wagging translation guide • Loose tail, enthusiastic motions friendly attitude and satisfaction. • Intense motion, including
rear end - submission • Stiff tail at line of back, slow movement - anger • Lowered tail, stiff motions - uneasiness, nervousness, desire to receive favour from another individual • Tail between legs - fear Tail held at 45 degrees above the line of the back or a little higher -curiosity and alertness In the language of dogs, barking is an alarm signal and is one of only a few types of signals that are not sent directly to a single recipient, even when the distance between them is not great. Barking that indicates a real threat has a very low tone, in the form of a series of three single muffled barks, sometimes described as a woof. And while burying bones in a freshly-planted flowerbed is guaranteed to make their owners lose the rag, the habit is a natural behaviour inherited from their wild predecessors. Food was not always available so after a successful hunt, the dog would always hide a part of whatever it ate from scavengers and other members of the pack.

Health & Beauty - Local Middle-Aged Hit By Skin Cancer
Middle-aged Brits have seen cases of the most dangerous form of skin cancer - malignant melanoma - soar from fewer than 500 a year to almost 2,000 since the end of the 1970s. The sharp increase means that more than five people a day in their fifties are falling victim to a cancer that can prove fatal if diagnosed at a late stage. Melanoma rates have more than tripled over the last 30 years, rising from 7.5 cases of melanoma per 100,000 people in their 50s in Britain to 26.6 cases per 100,000. And the latest available figures show that the total number of cases of malignant melanoma for all ages increased from around 12,100 in the UK in 2009 to around 12,800 in 2010 a rise of more than five per cent. The new statistics were released from Cancer Research UK which says the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better chance people have to beat the disease. The stark rise in melanoma rates highlights the importance of raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer, encouraging people to visit their doctor promptly if they notice any unusual changes in their skin, and of the need to be safe in the sun.
The awareness campaign is being supported by Tesco’s, which includes making Cancer Research UK leaflets about early signs of skin cancer easily accessible to millions of customers. The supermarket giant also aims to raise £10 million this year to fund a series of early diagnosis research projects across the UK. One of the projects is being carried out by a group of researchers at the University of Edinburgh who are finding new ways to help people recognise the signs of skin cancer. The team, led by Professor Jonathan Rees, want to see if using webbased images could be more successful at helping people recognise abnormalities than existing information. Professor Rees says: “People’s idea of what skin cancer looks like is limited to three or four images that are widely used to promote awareness of the disease but we don’t think this goes far enough with helping people identify the problem and going to their doctor. “With support from Tesco, the team in Edinburgh are working to use the internet and the potential it offers to access many images. It’s a bit like bird spotting - using pictures as a guide to what malignant melanoma could look like
and helping people make a better decision about seeing their doctor. “It’s worrying that melanoma rates are on the rise. But, if caught early, melanoma can be treated very successfully so if we can develop a better system of encouraging people to go to the doctor, this could potentially save a great deal of lives.” Thirty years ago malignant melanoma was the 17th most common form of cancer in the UK’s middle-aged - now it’s number five. Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, adds: “We know that cancer survival in the UK lags behind the best in Europe and this is likely because of a combination of many factors including late diagnosis. “Our Spot Cancer Early campaign and partnership with Tesco are raising awareness of the difference e a r l y diagnosis c a n make to
surviving cancer. “Melanoma is a largely preventable disease; people can reduce their chance of developing skin cancer in the first place if they protect their skin from sunburn. But it’s also important that people are aware of the warning signs for malignant melanoma. “Look out for changes in size, shape, or colour of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin - these should be reported to a GP without delay. In particular look for moles or freckles that are asymmetrical, with uneven colours or borders, larger than a pencil top eraser, are itchy or bleed. “The chances are this won’t turn out to be cancer, but if it is, spotting it early could make a real difference to the outcome.”

Historic buildings under
threat
THERE are fears for two of Denia’s oldest buildings, both of which appear to have slipped through the net regarding protection laws. The Domenech sawmill and “El Penal” edificio, both on Calle Diana, are in private ownership and in extreme disrepair. The sawmill was incorporated as a

business back in 1923 and was a million peseta concern which also exported fruit, making it one of Denia’s most important workplaces for several years. El Penal, or the prison, was so named due to its maze of cell-like apartment blocks which constituted affordable
town centre housing early in the last century, much of it for workers in the nearby sawmill. While the outside of the building is protected the interior has been gutted. Both buildings are in sought after parts of town and there are fears that the developers already have their eyes on the prime real estate.
COVE CONCERNS AN unspoiled cove at Aiguafreda on the Costa Brava is under threat from a major construction renaissance. Environmentalists say they are concerned about the environmental impact on the Costa Brava after several projects which were halted in 2008 have been resumed, as the property market recovers. According to SOS
by Alex Trelinski
Costa Brava, some 20 projects are underway along the 160 kilometre coastline. Among them is a 260-home residential development at Aiguafreda which had been stalled for 15 years due to bureaucratic hold-ups, divisions among investors and the economic crisis, sparked
by the implosion of a decade-long property bubble “There is a renaissance in construction,” said Pilar Marcos, of Greenpeace, ““We are falling into the same trap.” The group has urged the Madrid government to adopt stricter laws against building on the Spanish coast.

Don´t let your dream home become a nightmare If you’ve turned on the TV in the last few decades then chances are the abundance of programmes looking to promote overseas property investment to Britons won’t have passed you by unnoticed. From A Place In The Sun to Wanted Down Under , the listings are full of shows that make either relocating or securing a fantastic holiday home seem not only appealing, but relatively simple. Needless to say, though, just
as there are myriad reasons why people consider buying a property overseas, there are myriad complications that can turn the dream into a nightmare. One of which is unscrupulous professionals working in the overseas industries. Whether that’s a shady agent or dishonest builder, there are countless stories where people have lost everything because they placed their trust in someone who let them down.
The simple rule to follow, then, is to check, check and check again on the backgrounds of the people you are dealing with. Seek legal advice here in the UK from an overseas property specialist, and don’t sign anything until you are 100% sure of every term, condition and clause. It’s also worth noting that laws and regulations can vary wildly from country to country, and therefore getting assistance from someone who
has experience in your chosen destination is essential. Hardly a revelation. With plenty of other TV shows that focus on the horrific ways people have been exploited and taken for a ride by the foreign property markets, what’s less widely known is that you can also lose out on thousands even if everything goes to plan overseas. Banks continue to advertise themselves as a great place to deal with international financial transactions. But perhaps unsurprisingly, given their recent track record regarding a lack of transparency, this often isn’t the case. Hence the reason any expert will advise going to a foreign exchange specialist, rather than wherever your current account is. Firms like Currencies Direct offer far more competitive exchange rates and do not charge transfer or receiving fees, so therefore the savings can be significant. A €250,000 home in Spain, for example, could be subject to a standard £25 charge when the bank actions your request, and then an eye-watering 1-3% of the Euro amount when the funds are received. That’s not to be sniffed at, with the difference in cost being large enough to pay for renovations, redecorating, furniture, or simply kept to one side for that rainy day. Not that there’s much precipitation in Spain, of course.

Designed to play with light and shadow as the sun moves at varying points of the day, gaps in the floor slabs allow daylight to flood through the building. 10 items no kitchen should be without
So you’ve spent good money on creating the perfect space in which to create the perfect meal. The problems is, no matter how much you’ve forked out on that oven, those cabinets and cupboards, a good workman or woman is only as good as the tools at their disposal. Not that we would ever advocate blaming your kit when things go wrong, of course. Having a variety of quality equipment at your disposal in the kitchen will open up countless possibilities in terms of what you can cook. Imagine inviting friends over for penne and porcini mushrooms, and then revealing you made the pasta yourself. Or frying up some sirloins, complete with griddle marks. Few things are more satisfying than serving properly made dishes, so here’s a checklist of essentials you should always have to hand before you start showing off any culinary expertise. Ladle In layman’s terms, this is really just a large spoon with a bent handle and deep serving cup. Ideal for soups, obviously, it’s difficult to perfect a Vietnamese noodle pho without one of these. Chef’s knife and sharpening block. Ideally you should be looking for an 8-10” blade
with a thick bolster to act as a finger guard, and the knife itself should sit comfortably in your hand. A sharpening block is essential too, otherwise preparing meat will be rather troublesome after a few months. Grater and microplane Most of us have a grater somewhere in the home, but we recommend looking for one that also allows you to microplane- you’ll need that for zesting lemons, grating Parmesan, herbs and spices, which is important in more complex dishes. Paring knife You won’t be able to make fine cuts- for example coring tomatoes, other fruits and vegetables- without one of these. One word of advice; if the blade doesn’t extend into the handle put it back on the shelf and look for another. Cerated bread knife Let’s face it, your weekday morning toast is fine from a loaf of pre-cut bread, but if you’re sitting down to a hearty winter stew and want a crusty baguette you’ll need a suitable knife to carve it up. Can opener Look for a bulky plastic can opener that has a twist knob on top, rather than the more old school all-metal version. Chances are the latter will cause you more
trouble than it’s worth, and nobody needs trouble. Wire mesh colander If you’re cooking pasta then this is a key purchase, even if that pasta is shop bought. Try to find one with a foot at the bottom, thus meaning your spaghetti won’t be left sitting in a puddle of water in the sink. Pasta maker There are almost as many pasta makers on the market as there are types of pasta, and so it can get a little confusing. Our preference would be to choose on that offers between three and five settings for various pasta shapes- any more and chances are it will be a jack of all trades, master of none. Wok Although no longer the exotic pan it once was, woks are probably the best investment you can make for the kitchen. Ideal for stir fry dishes and other oriental meals, there’s also nothing to stop you using this for a plethora of other offerings. Griddle pan Last, but definitely not least, is the griddle plan. This is the best possible way to fry meat and fish with aesthetically pleasing griddle marks. Look for the heaviest you can, which is usually a good sign of quality, and one where the metal runs into the wooden handle.

NEW Audi e-tron The Audi e-tron is the first fully electrically powered series production model from the brand with the four rings. The company claims its a sporty full-size SUV which is suitable for everyday use. Standing still or on the move, the Audi e-tron is electrifying. Its expressive sill area, the electric tailboard and the light gray Singleframe are indicators of the high-voltage technology that makes for a special driving experience. The electric SUV is powered by two powerful electric motors that are locally CO2-neutral and virtually silent. A new generation of the quattro drive, the electric all-wheel drive, ensures excellent traction and dynamics. It varies the distribution of drive torques between the two axles – within a fraction of a second. A key factor for the sporty character and outstanding dynamics is the low and central position of the battery system. Which gives the vehicle a range that is suitable for driving long distances. During more than 90 percent of all decelerations, the
Audi e-tron recovers energy solely via its electric motors. In combination with the integrated electrohydraulic brake control system. Audi is the world’s first carmaker to use such a system in an electrically powered series production vehicle. The cleverly designed aerodynamics also contribute significantly to its efficiency. One highlight of this concept are the optional virtual exterior mirrors – a worldwide first in a series production model. Not only do they reduce aerodynamic drag, they also take digitalization in the vehicle to a whole new level. The ´mirrors´ are digital cameras linked to screens within the cabin. The Audi e-tron offers the spaciousness and comfort of a typical full-sized SUV. Paired with high-quality materials and fine workmanship, it makes electric mobility a premium experience. This is also ensured by the comprehensive and reliable range of charging options with intelligent solutions for
Audi´s virtual exterio r mirro rs
at home and on the go. From navigation with the e-tron route planner, which displays the appropriate route with the required charging points, automated billing at the charging station and all the way to remote control via smartphone – the Audi
e-tron is ex t r e m e l y well connected. It is equipped with the high-end media center MMI navigation plus including LTE Advanced and a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard. Numerous assist systems further relieve the driver.
For example, the standard efficiency assist promotes an economic driving style by displaying predictive information and performing automatic recuperation. If the customer selects the adaptive cruise assist, the system can also brake and accelerate the
electric SUV predictively. The Audi e-tron rolls off the assembly line at the CO2neutral plant in Brussels. Initial deliveries to European customers are planned for late 2018. The e-tron has a starting price in the region of €80,000.
Super Toyota Supra Defender Works V8 The original, popular and now classic Toyota Supras were released between 1978 and 2002 – all powered by an inline sixcylinder engine. The new 2019 Toyota Supra is also available with an inlinesix-cylinder powerplant. That however is where the similarity ends. The engine n the new Supra is a 3.0-liter unit sourced from BMW. It allegedly produces around 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It can allegedly accelerate the coupe to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. It remains to be seen if Toyota will also produce the less expensive variant with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder making 248 hp (185 kW) as previously r e p o r t e d .
If neither of these variants of the Supra sounds quick enough for your liking, chief engineer Tetsuya Tada says that a more powerful GRMN version is on its way. The new Supra features a fairly rounded overall shape that creates a connection with the look of the famous fourthgeneration model, many will
remember fondly. The front fascia features three, large inlets. A curved centre section of the nose draws viewers’ eye to the area between the headlights. A long, gently sculpted hood leads back to a swept-back windshield and the doublebubble roof. Skinny vents ahead of the swollen fenders at the front and rear add sporty cues. The tail features an integrated ducktail spoiler and triangular LED taillights.
This isn´t the long-awaited new Landrover Defender, this is the Works V8 70th Edition. A low-volume run (up to 150 will be made) which is the work of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, the arm of JLR that specialises in reworking old cars. The original Defender went out of production in 2016 so these are modified late 90´s and 110´s converted in Works V8´s. The specs of the virtually new cars are very impressive. There´s a JLR 5.0-litre V8 stuffed under the bonnet with a more than ample 400bhp and 380lb ft of torque being
fed through an eight-speed ZF automatic box to all four 18-inch diamond-turned Sawtooth alloy wheels shod in 265/65 R18 all-terrain tyres. 0-60mph takes 5.6 seconds in a 90 Station Wagon Works V8, and the top speed is capped at 106mph for your safety. The suspension and steering have of course been adapted to cope with that excess of grunt. Although you shouldn´t expect the Works V8 to corner like a Range Rover Sport as a result. The interior has also been spruced up. It’s fully
tailored in Windsor leather on the Recaro sports seats, dashboard, door cards and headlining. It includes JLRs’ in-house Classic Infotainment slimline sat-nav system too. The more modern electronics include the biLED headlamps, designed to actually illuminate the road ahead unlike the headlights on most Defenders. Prices will start at £150,000 for this lowvolume 70th birthday special, although it’s expected that the costs will be flexible depending on the exact donor vehicle used.

FRIDAY 6TH JULY 2018
A few years ago, I ran the Barcelona marathon, lining up at the starting point alongside 12,000 other runners at the foot of the steps leading down from the National Palace. With the famous fountains gushing water high into the air, we waited accompanied by the tune Barcelona, sung by Freddie mercury and Montserrat Caballe blasting out from speakers around us, which made the hairs stand up on the back of my head for a few unforgettable moments that will live in my memory forever. Spanish soprano sing Montserrat Caballe, who died last week at the age of
eighty-five, starred in ninety opera roles during her illustrious career, but will still be best remembered for that 1987 ‘poperatic’ duet with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Eyebrows were raised in the world of rock, when the collaboration was announced, but the pair had in fact developed a close and fun-filled friendship, which was evident when they premiered the single, in front of 6000 invited guests at KU Discotheque in Ibiza. The performance of ‘Barcelona’, which critic, Tim de Lisle described as “An exercise in high camp, with two of the world’s greatest practitioners vying to see
who could go furthest over the top”, drew a ten-minute standing ovation, but left the music critics less than impressed. “I defy any other rock and roll personality to duet with a legendary opera singer and survive” said Freddie rounding on the critics who lampooned the duo, for his arch campness and her gigantic size. Freddie, loved the Spanish opera divaMontsy, for her wacky personality and lack of airs and graces, whilst she enjoyed listening to his rude jokes and was never offended by his colourful language. The song became a huge worldwide hit and was chosen as the theme for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Barlow
BALLOONED in size
Take That singer, Gary Barlow, has recently opened up about the eating disorder that affected the early years of his solo career following the band’s split in the mid 90’s. A severe bout of depression led the star to a six-month period during which he never left his house. Ironically, as his career faltered, his former bandmate Robbie Williams’ star rose in ascendency and the higher it got, the lower Barlow felt. “The thing that was more alarming than reading things,” he told an audience at the Cheltenham Literary Festival, “was on the street, you would have people shouting, ‘hey, how’s Robbie doing?” “The one thing I discovered was that I had put weight on … and a few less people recognised me. The more weight I put on, the more
invisible I was and this happened over a two-year period and it was fantastic. By the time I hit 17st 2lbs I was unrecognisable and in heaven because no one recognised me.” Now, a healthy 12 stone and enjoying his career as one of the nation’s most loved performers, along with his mate Robbie, he explained that he wrote about these issues in the first volume of his memoirs 15 years ago, but was persuaded to leave them out. Launching his new book, A Better Me, he said, things have changed for the good now, with men able to talk about things much more openly. Actually Gary, these days anyone not wishing to be approached in the streets, would simply need to don a Boris Johnson facemask and they’d be avoided like the plague.
Myon MEyes o’s FRIDAY 8TH JUNE 2018
Marath
Bum bite
I’ve touched on the subject of marathon running elsewhere on these pages, probably because it’s slipping to the forefront of my mind just now as I should have started training for my next one in April and I haven’t. When I do start my regime, hope I’m luckier than multiple gold medal winning Olympian, Sir Mo Farah, who has taken up marathon running after retiring from the athletics arena. The athlete, a four-time Olympic champion was out on an evening training run in St Moritz, Switzerland, when a dog lunged at him, bit him on the backside and left him needing vaccinations. “I was bitten by a dog on the bum at the end of July,” he said, “It was about 6pm and when I was going round the lake, I went past these dogs to go on the trail and one of them moved. I looked at the guy with them but he didn’t do anything.” “I was thinking the guy was going to stop it, but he let the dog go and then chomp,” he continued, “I had to get injections, there weren’t any stitches but there was blood.” “I was so mad that when I went back to the house I was like, ‘A dog’s just bitten me, let’s go find this guy’.” Fortunately, the incident appears to have motivated Sir Mo even more as last Sunday, he claimed his maiden marathon win in only his third race with victory in Chicago. And I worry about being bitten by a mosquito when I’m out running.
Thank you for the Horlicks
Rumours abound that septuagenarian pop combo ABBA are in the process of recording a first studio album together, following the release of a new single, ‘I Still Have Faith In You’, which is set to debut on the BBC in December. Band co-founder BjörnUlvaeus has hinted that the band could release a new album — 37 years after the release of their last, The Visitors. Speaking to A List he said: “A new album, possibly. Or four songs or something like that — that’s possible. But for us to perform on stage that’s just not going to happen. That’s a definite.” Ulvaeussaid returning to the recording studio was a “wonderful” experience, “We were standing there in these familiar surroundings and we looked at each other and it took 15 seconds and we were back.” Hard to imagine these seventy odd year olds harmonising together again after all these years, but hey, if it’s good enough for Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, why not?
Twenty years of Westlife
Do we need another boyband to reform, shower us with new materia l and embark on a nationwide tour? Well, it appears the answer to that question, is yes. Last week, we heard that Scottish crooners, Wet , Wet , Wet are to reunite, with erstwhile lead singer Marti Pellow nowreplaced by former Liberty X and Voice UK winner Kevin Simm. This week, it’s the turn ofIrish heartthrobs, Westlife to announce a 20th Anniversary album and tour, albeit without founding member Brian Mcfadden, who will instead, be appearing as a contestant on ITV’s January reality monster Dancing On Ice. Westlife, who spent 14 years together and racked up 13 UK number one singles, selling 20.2 million records in the UK alone, are expected to have a single penned by Ed Sheeren ……. Could it get any worse? The‘Flying Without Wings’foursome, made up of Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan, confirmed their big news in a video, which shows them taking a seat on their trademark stools. “We’ll be seeing you soon,” they say …………That Louis Walsh has a lot to answer for.

the late Chas Hodges from Chas’n’Dave. Paul is also set to star in Mangetout Rodney, Mangetout!! ........ good news the new show as Grandad, for fans of Only Fools and Horses emerged this week while Tom Bennett and Ryan Hutton will take over with the announcement that a new musical based the iconic roles of Del Boy and Rodney, made on the show will open in the West End next February. famous by David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst. The musical was the final project Only Fools writer “We’re very conscious of the Only Fools legacy and creator John Sullivan was working on and that it’s so fondly remembered by people of before his untimely death in 2011 almost all ages, so we’ve tried to incorporate and will incorporate classic everyone’s favourite moments from the TV moments from the beloved shows and of course, all the great characters British sitcom, as well but this time it’s with as 20 new songs. songs.” Said Whitehouse. Co-written by It has been five years comedian Paul in the making and is Whitehouse and described as “a unique Sullivan’s son Jim, showstopper, unlike the show will also anything else in the West feature music from End”.
Big Brother returns to form Few eyebrows were raised when Channel 5 bosses announced that the current and nineteenth series of Big Brother would be the last. The formula has become a little dated and contrived in the face of competition from newer reality series such as Love Island, which has proved to be a runaway hit, whilst BB audiences have slowly dwindled. However, Big Brother 19 recently served up a timely reminder of how groundbreaking the show has been over the years, as it tackled serious issues such as racism, bullying and
39
homophobia head on. In a poignant and emotionally charged scene aired last week, eighteen-year old contestant Cameron Cole, from Norwich, came out to his fellow housemates. Teenager Cameron, gathered all of the contestants on the sofa, and in one of the show’s most emotional ever moments, let them know that he is gay. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, as the housemates gathered around to offer their love and support for the young man, following his announcement.
“I don’t know how I’m going to do this,” he began. “It’s very awkward and uncomfortable. I don’t know quite how I’m going to say it. “Obviously I’ve come in here, I’ve tried to be as open and honest as possible, but obviously there’s one part [of myself] that I’ve been struggling with.” Producers of this final show promised less gimmicks and a return to the roots of the show, which began as a social experiment, so what’s the betting some other TV station will pick up the baton and bring us BB20 next year ….. Hello ITV2.

tes © 2017 Best for Puzzles Drop Quo Copyright Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

MARINA ALTA Treasures of the Turf by Christopher Garibaldi. The Arts Society Marina Alta. Next presentation November 1st. 2018 at Salones Canor Teulada. Doors open 10am. for registration and coffee. Following the Arts Societies recent splendid walk through the London and Paris of Claude Monet, we next are invited to gallop along with the Sport of Kings led at a fine pace by Christopher Garibaldi in his presentation ‘Treasures of the Turf’. Christopher Garibaldi is the Director of the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket and will be using a wealth of paintings and decorative arts at his disposal
to take us on a canter through the Sport of Kings from it’s earliest origins in the 17th century, the development of the racing circuit in Britain and the ever present influence of the Jockey Club, to present day. Christopher has had a distinguished track record in the arts, including as Senior Curator and Keeper of Arts at Norwich Castle Museum and has catalogued the silver artefacts of the Royal Collections at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and The Speakers Residence at The Houses of Parliament. He has also appeared in numerous TV programmes as an expert commentator, and is the author of a number of books relating to the decorative arts. A fine pedigree you must agree! and It’s a fair bet he will give us a good run for our money.
This presentation is sponsored by Blevins Franks, and as usual wine and soft drinks will be offered after the presentation to allow socialising with the speaker and the committee. Directions to the venue are on our website www.marinaaltaarts.com and for membership details membership@marinaaltaarts.com

JUAN Huerga, the former president of Alicante’s Hercules football club, has been found guilty of fraud charges and faces 14 months in prison as well as large fines. The case goes back to 2005 when three companies controlled by Huerga evaded paying tax on earnings of €5.4 million and around €2

high profile involvement with Hercules FC. He was also able to enjoy a standard of living not commensurate with his declared income, further arousing the taxman’s suspicions. A court in Alicante found him guilty this week and fined him about €1.6 million as well as issuing the prison sentence.

Stratum to land £500,000 Cesarewitch
STRATUM leads a strong string of entries by Irish top trainer Willie Mullins in Saturday’s Dubai £500,000 Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket. Stratum, unlucky in the Ebor at York, is the pick of Mullins’ contingency that also includes Limini, Low Sun and Uradel. At the midweek declaration stage Aiden O’Brien’s Southern France, third in the St Leger,
remained in the line up. Ian Williams saddles a trio of runners, including Stars Over The Sea: “Stars over The Sea has done well. Speedo Boy was unlucky at Doncaster, and Blue Rambler ran pleasing at Goodwood,” said Williams of his trio. The Weekender tips Stratum (3.40) to land the £307,000 first prize, ridden by Robert Winston.
In the Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes Circus Maximus (1.50) trained by Aiden O’Brien is selected. O’Brien also saddles Cape of Good Hope (2.25) in the Masar Godolphin Autumn Stakes. John Gosden trained Too Darn Hot (3.00) is napped in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, ridden by Frankie Dettori; with Michael Stoute trained Sangorius, ridden
by William Buick, worthy of each way support. Mark Johnston saddles Octave (4.15) in the Mydubai Nursery; and William Haggas runs Beauty Filly (4.50) in the Dubai Life British EBF Boadicea Stakes. In the Farley Stakes Aiden O’Brien saddles North Face (5.25). At York, Burj (2.40) trained by S. Bin Suroor is tipped in the Coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes.
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
There was a full Premier League at the weekend and one Monday Night game which contributed to the Alfaz Fantasy Football League a total of 29 goals, 7 clean sheets, 52 yellow cards(most so far this Season) and 3 red ones. After a couple of quiet weeks, the Referees were back with a bang, flashing cards faster than a Waddington Rep.The 3 Players to receive their marching orders were Watford’s Kabasele, Cardiff’s Ralls and Leicester City’s Wes Morgan who was sent off for the 2nd time this Season. The Referees also awarded 3 penalties, Two to Bournemouth which was converted and one to Manchester City which was missed by Mahrez(I’m still crying over that!) John’s team Wee Aggies became the 6th side to reach the Summit of the A.F.F.L. when they took a 14 point
lead over two teams in joint 2nd place, Simon’s Si is Norfolk and Good and John’s other team Tarazara who was top last week. Keith’s Max & Paddy have slotted into 4th place and have made up ground on the early pacemakers. Down at the opposite end of the table, we have two teams from my Local in England, The Packet and they are Mark’s team Inter Rubber who are just one point behind Gary’s Upside Team. In our Mark Carter Ladies Section Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team have regained pole position from Pauline’s Vodka Army who is only 2 points away. These 2 teams have shared the top spot since the start of the Season. Linda’s Team Tapas is in 3rd place and are well within striking distance of the Summit just 4 points away. Jackie’s Team Winchester have dropped into the bottom spot and
have replaced Kim’s Ginger United. Harley’s Ginger Ninjar remain at the top of our Junior League with a 16 point lead over the improving William & Henry who top scored in this Section with a tally of 35 points. Fleetwood Gian fell further behind Tom’s Real City at the bottom, the gap now 40 points. In our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League 2 teams stand shoulder to shoulder at the top. Big Sam’s Army and Kevin’s Two for the Road have a fragile 2 point advantage over former leaders Des’s Wigan Champs. The Two Leaders have both got the Golden Boots top scorer in their Line-Ups Edin Hazard who has amassed 49 points so far. Only 10 Fantasy Managers selected him, I think most Managers expected him to go to Real Madrid. There is only one point between the 2 teams at the bottom where Liz’s Cookies
Crew 61 trail Joanna’s Hugonauts F.C. Keith’s team Max & Paddy climbed to the top of our Champion of Champions League by taking a slight 3 point advantage over Jin Dream Team while at the other end of the table Dave’s team The Hatters managed to close the gap on Gary’s Hammered Again to 17 points. The first two teams going into our Monthly Wine Draw are our top scoring team which was Chris’s P.G.Tips who waded in with a tally of 56 points helped by Arsenal’s Aubameyang who scored 2 goals in the Gunners 5-1 demolition of Fulham at Craven Cottage. The other team joining them is Dean’s team The Travellers who got the lowest score of 2 points thanks mainly to Manchester City Mahrez who blazed his penalty into row Z. Manager of the Month for
October is being kindly sponsored by Olga & Marcel at the Trafalgar Restaurant in Alfaz who provide an excellent International Cuisine in pleasant surroundings. With only one week gone Chris’s P.G.Tips have taken an early 2 point lead over Eric’s Bootwinners. Len’s H.M.S. Victory is in 3rd place and wouldn’t it be funny if they won this fabulous meal for 2 at the Trafalgar Restaurant. It’s been a good week for Len because he has also won a Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz after moving up the most places this week 55, from 103rd to number 48. At the moment I have not had time to collate all the scores for our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition. The results will appear on our website and a report will follow on these pages next week.

SHOW SOME RESPECT by Alex Trelinski
Lewis Hamilton says that Formula 1 title rival Sebastian Vettel has received too much criticism this year. Hamilton said: “I feel the media need to show a little more respect for Sebastian.”
“You simply can’t imagine how hard it is to do what we do at our level, for any athlete at the top of his game.” Hamilton added: “It is to be expected that being humans we will make mistakes
Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale, as well as Spurs and England striker Harry Kane, are among the nominees for the 2018 Ballon d’Or. The 30-man shortlist is dominated by Champions League winners Real Madrid, who have eight players nominated. Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne are among 11 Premier League players on the list. Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, won last year’s Ballon d’Or and is
presented in 1956, is given to the best player of the year. A ceremony to announce again a contender along with five-time winner Lionel Messi the winner of the prestigious from Barcelona. Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Isco, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, and Raphael Varane make up the Real Madrid contenders, whilst two Barcelona players, namely Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic join Messi on the list. Atletico Madrid also gets in on the action with nominations for Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, and Diego Godin. The Ballon d’Or, first
but it is how we get through them that counts.” Vettel and Ferrari were fighting a close battle with Mercedes for much of the championship but their season has unravelled partly
because of a series of errors, even before Mercedes found an extra gear at the Singapore Grand Prix in mid-September. Four-time world champion Vettel has made small but costly errors at races in Azerbaijan, France, Austria, Germany, Italy and Japan, and Ferrari has made a series of operational errors that have also hit the team’s hopes. Vettel also attracted criticism for his collision with Max Verstappen at Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. Hamilton, who in Japan won his ninth race of the year, will clinch the F1 title at the US Grand Prix if he wins on 21 October and Vettel is lower than second.

OUT FOR REVENGE
ENGLAND will be reunited with Croatia for the first time since their World Cup semifinal heartbreak in their first away match in the Uefa Nations League this Friday night. Goals from Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic ended the Three Lions dream of reaching their first World Cup final since winning the competition in 1966 on that evening in Moscow in July. Since that defeat, coach

Gareth Southgate has been rewarded with a new contract, as he’s called up a host of new faces into his squad as he continues to build for the future. There will be a distinct lack of atmosphere though tomorrow night at the Stadion HNK Rijeka, as the game will be played behind closed doors, as part of a twomatch punishment handed out to the Croatian FA, after a swastika
was marked onto the pitch before a Euro 2016 qualifier, England will be without Luke Shaw and James Tarkowski due to the injury, but Southgate has called up uncapped Brighton defender Lewis Dunk to the squad, as well as Ben Chilwell, who made his debut last month. After Croatia, England has a date in Sevilla against Spain on Monday night, who they lost to in their Uefa League opener at Wembley early last month.
