The Finance Tour returns to the Costa Blanca! ask their questions direct to companies they knew and trusted from when they lived in the UK.

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial The Finance Tour is returning to the Costa Blanca for the third time in October, and I thought it would be helpful to take a look back at the last tour to give people a flavour of what to expect. Firstly I should point out that the feedback we have received on both tours was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees particularly focussing on how refreshing it was to be able to

Over the 2017 tour and May 2018, we had questions covering a wide range of financial concerns for Brits living here in Spain. Questioned ranged from how to invest safely and tax efficiently here in Spain, right up to more complex areas like Trust and Succession Planning for Spanish residents with UK based beneficiaries. Naturally a lot of questions also focussed on pension planning, and having a representative from a trusted UK pension company on the tour proved extremely useful.

Attendance is essential for anyone seeking financial advice on investments, pension transfers, tax, succession planning, along with generic legal and tax advice relevant to your life here in Spain. For those with existing investments, including QROPS and Spanish bonds, you’ll discover how crucial changes to your underlying investments can strip away fees by as much as 75% and vastly improve returns.

Brit In Murder Quiz

FROM FRONT PAGE

A BRITISH man, who has already been charged over the disappearance of a Latvian woman from a Costa del Sol night club, has been arrested for suspected attempted murder. 36-year-old Craig Porter from Liverpool allegedly stole a car from a group of Spaniards in Estepona before hitting one of them and driving off. Porter was detained after being intercepted by police while travelling in a speeding car. He and two other Brits had no identification papers on them, and whilst they were

being

processed, officers discovered that an arrest warrant had been issued over August’s incident in Estepona. Porter has also had his passport confiscated since the end of 2014 over his alleged involvement in the disappearance of Agnese Klavina. The 30-year-old Latvian was last seen in September 2014 at the Aqwa Mist club in Marbella, with prosecutors seeking 12 year jail terms for Porter and Wesley Capper for her kidnapping. Her body has never been discovered.

A century and a half for child abuse by Alex Trelinski

t s n i a g a h s a l k The bac n o i t a r e n e g “NiNi” A man has won a court case to allow him to cease child support payments to his daughter, who is aged 24. The decision came from a court in Albacete that heard that the payments were supposed to support her while she studied. However she has not been

attending any educational establishment, has not been working and her father argued that his payments were simply supporting her lifestyle. She has been classed as one of the increasing numbers of

young Spanish “ninis” - youngsters neither in work or in education who are supported by parents, the state or a combination of both. The case follows similar recent rulings including the ceasing of payments to a 30-year-old who had been studying

A man had a novel approach to avoid being breathalysed after being stopped by police - he wrapped himself in a blanket and locked himself in the boot of his car. The incident happened in Guadalajara (La Mancha) when the vehicle was stopped after local police noticed it was being driven erratically. Initially the suspect tried to drive off

chemistry since 2006 despite her results and general performance having been described as “disastrous”. Child support was also withdrawn for a 29-yearold in Cantabria who had left education and not engaged in any search for work. Experts say

but then decided to take the unusual evasive action. However the ruse was short lived as the police broke into the car through a window and ejected the man. He still refused to take the breath test but based on the police

observations he has been charged with dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. His troubles are unlikely to stop there as apparently he is a Bulgarian national in Spain illegally. He was also carrying an 18cm knife and box cutter, something else the police are keen to question him about.

PROSECUTORS in a Valencian child abuse case have asked for a jail sentence of 150 years if a man is found guilty of attempted child sex abuse involving well over 300 children. The court has heard how he preyed on children who were vulnerable or needed money, grooming them online using the Tuenti and WhatsApp messaging services. The crimes date back to 2013 when the man opened a number of false profiles to start his scheme. He contacted 365 minors aged between 12 and 17, offering payments of €200 to €300 for sex acts and more for full sex. On one occasion he offered a child €1,000 to stay with him for a week and discussed the idea of the same child having sex with third parties for money. Most of the victims turned down his sexual offers but four girls aged between 14 and 16 started having sex with him after he arranged to house them in Onda and Burriana, both in Castellon province. He also started hiring the girls out to other people for payment, money he kept a large cut off for his “services”. When the man’s scheme came to light he was arrested and has been in provisional detention awaiting trial for five years. The case is being heard in Castellon Crown Court.

RYANAIR was forced to cancel over 80 flights to and from Spain last Friday due to a strike called by cabin crew staff across six countries. The walkout meant that half of the low-cost carrier’s Spanish services were scrapped, with 10 services to and from Alicante-Elche airport grounded, whilst 18 flights in and out of Valencia were also grounded. 870 cabin staff in Spain took part in the strike over their work contracts, with unions not ruling out the possibility of having a walkout every month until their

demands are met. Ryanair has also courted controversy by refusing to pay any compensation to passengers who had

their flights cancelled, stating that the strike is an “exceptional circumstance”, which means they are not responsible for any damages. FOUR workers in a Valencian factory had to have hands and fingers amputated after a twenty-ton piece of machinery fell on them. The horrific incident occurred just before midnight on Sunday at a metal stamping company in Naquera, near Valencia City. The equipment, described as a hydraulic press, fell for reasons which are currently undisclosed.

This was the same stand that the company took in July, when another cabin crew strike led to a wave of cancellations. by Simon Russell

Two of the factory workers were trapped by the fall and fire crews were called out. In a complex operation, the rescuers needed to use a forklift truck to lift the metal. In a terrible catalogue of injuries, a man aged 25 lost a hand and several fingers required amputation. Another man aged 55 lost several fingers

FGV, the company that operates the Valencian rail system, has started a poster campaign entitled “Selfies against loneliness”. This is to make people more aware of the issues of loneliness for some elderly and for them to think more of family and neighbours so they do not become socially and has severe hand injuries while a third man also had to have several fingers amputated and suffered what has been described as “catastrophic” arm injuries. The fourth victim was a woman aged 30 who had to have both hands amputated and also suffered severe shock. All the victims were transferred to La Fe and Levante Hospitals. Over 200 posters are being placed across the rail network in a project that is a collaboration with Amics de la Gent Major, an association that is dedicated to the social welfare of the elderly. The start of the campaign also coincided with the International Day of the Elderly on 1 October. at this stage but a full enquiry is sure to follow. In a bad day for industrial accidents in the Valencian Community, a man died in Alicante after a concrete block crushed him while he was working at a site in the Benalua district. An ambulance was called but they could only confirm the man’s death; he has not been named and was aged 32.

Benidorm eyesore to be rebranded

A large plot of land on the edge of Benidorm, taken over by squatters and vandals is soon to have a new lease of life as an area of landscaped public parkland. The large swathe of wasteland, known as Armanello, sits on the Northern edge of the resort, bordering the outskirts of the Rincon de Loix zone on one side and the N332 trunk road on the other. Formerly an area of farmland, full of orange groves and fruit trees, the area was interspersed with large family homes and villas sitting on huge plots of land.

by Andy Mansell

However, around twenty years ago, the city council entered into a controversial agreement with a local entrepreneur, Enrique Ortiz, to re-categorise the land for building purposes. A ten-year battle ensued, where breaches of compliance, bureaucracy and legal wrangling, left property owners and residents of the area uncertain of their futures, forcing the majority of them to abandon their homes. The building plans never came to fruition and the

area became an overgrown eyesore. In recent years, Armanello has become an area of degradation, vandalism and embarrassment to Benidorm City Hall, with the empty houses taken over by squatters. Many of these squatters run small businesses dealing in scrap metal and discarded materials from their land making the area prone to fires and explosions, whilst others deal in narcotics from their premises. However, the new initiative, confirmed this week, through a statement

TOURIST DROP TOURIST numbers to Spain fell one point nine per cent in August for the second month in a row, in a further sign that growth in visitors is starting to stagnate after nearly five years of record numbers due to the resurgence of rivals like Turkey and North Africa. It is the first time

that August registered a decline in tourist numbers since 2009, according to official figures. The number of tourists visiting Spain in the first eight months of 2018 fell by nought point one per cent, with a total of 57.3 million.

Electricity savings blowing in the wind

THE University of Alicante (UA) have developed wind turbines that could save 40% on basic electricity bills, they announced this week. Professor Javier Ferrández from the UA’s IT and Computing Department said: “the idea is that the system is capable of covering between 30 to 40% of the energy needs of a family house, a building or a business so that within two to three years it has paid for itself”. The special rotor blade design means that it can

by Simon Russell

work even in light winds and it also has a “smart system” that allows it to read meteorological data and make independent decisions about how best to function. The devices are silent, unlike most models currently available and installation is straightforward. The turbines were developed as part of a thesis on renewable energy but have proved so successful that they are to be manufactured and sold, initially in Alicante province.

Small business exodus

THERE are concerns that small businesses and shops are being driven out of Alicante city centre by high rents and lack of investment in infrastructure by the council. Merchants associations have used Calle de Teatro as an example, where over a dozen traders have closed their doors within the last few months. These include a variety of businesses, ranging from clothes shops to an estate agency and an ice cream parlour. Monthly rent for a small unit can be €1,800 per month, unaffordable for most and not reflecting the lack of public investment in the area which means a once pristine street is now scruffy and in need of renovation. Just as worryingly only 30% of closures are moving elsewhere while the remaining 70% are closing permanently.

This follows multiple breakdowns of the old system this summer. €175,000 is being spent on new kiosks for the flower sellers while the ground floor toilets are being demolished and completely rebuilt. THE Alicante town of Aspe is helping selected unemployed citizens to gain their driving licences, a valuable tool for getting back in the workplace. Many potential employers require their staff to be able to drive while having transport also opens up the job market for people who can travel further for work, said a spokesman for the project. The programme is funded by the Valencian Department of Equality and the EU Social Welfare Fund.

Roadside riddle

THE GUARDIA CIVIL has recovered over 234 thousand euros of notes after a motorist spotted the cash scattered by the side of a motorway in central Spain. Officers are now trying to find out who the money belongs to, after finding the notes next to the A4

motorway in Tembleque near Toledo. The Guardia had been running a checkpoint on the motorway and were told by one of the motorists they had pulled over about the cash. The working theory is that the notes were thrown

by Simon Russell

out of a car window by someone who feared he was going to be stopped and would not be able to explain where they had come from. Guardia officers swept up the cash before it was taken to a local bank to be counted.

Ton up on a scooter THE police have been able to identify a man who was filmed travelling at speeds of up to 100 km on the hard shoulder of the main road when driving an electric twowheeled scooter. A motorist filmed the incident on the V-32 at Sagunt and his own speedometer confirmed the

by Simon Russell

speed of the scooter, which is not allowed on this type of public road. Presumably to avoid identification the man was also wearing a mask, bizarrely the alien creature from the “Predator” movie. He had a

passenger standing with him on the vehicle, at first thought to be a child but now confirmed as an adult female. The culprit is said to be a 32-year-old local man who is now likely to face charges for road safety crimes. Unsurprisingly, the video footage has gone viral on social networks.

New scooter laws announced

VALENCIA City is set to announce several new sets of laws and guidelines in measures to regulate the growing number of electric scooters in the city. The vehicles will be banned from pedestrian pavements and their

speed restricted to 30 km. Users will have to stick to cycle lanes and will require lights and an audio warning device such as a horn or buzzer. However, the use of helmets is not

mandatory, a move which had been expected. The city council is currently in an ongoing dispute with Lime, a company that hires out electric scooters which account for many of the vehicles in the capital.

Lotto trip ends in fatality

An unpaid bill leads to police assault A Colombian man who refused to pay a hotel bill on the basis that he was “leaving the country tomorrow so it doesn’t matter” has landed himself in jail after assaulting a police officer. The incident occurred in Valencia city after the man tried to pay with a credit card that had previously been used fraudulently in Madrid. The hotel manager had been contacted by the police when the card came up on their system and two agents went to the hotel

by Matthew Richards

to interview the man. When confronted the 26-year-old asked to go to the bathroom. An agent accompanied him and the man head-butted the officer, breaking his nose. He was restrained and arrested and faces charges of assault and fraud while further charges may well follow. It is also believed that he tried to snatch the weapon of the officer he assaulted.

Holidays on the horizon

POLICE are beginning to put together the tragic details of a road accident that led to the death of a 52-year-old woman at the hands of a hit and run driver. The incident happened on Avenida Pío XII in Valencia City on Monday when the woman and a friend were crossing the street on their way to return some goods to a shop. Although witnesses say that the woman was crossing when she was permitted to a car, going at speed, jumped a red light hit her and drove off. Her friend had

by Simon Russell

paused to check her mobile phone; an action which the police say probably saved her life. CCTV footage led the police to a car in nearby Villar del Arzobispo which was being driven by a man in his fifties who was described as being disoriented. It turns out that he has schizophrenia and other mental issues and is supposed to be subject to various driving restrictions due to

these conditions. Apparently, he had gone out to buy a lottery ticket and when informed that he had probably killed someone during the trip he seemed “indifferent” and even asked if he could be released to go and buy his ticket. The man has been detained and is being examined by doctors who believe he may have stopped taking his medication. His victim was treated by an emergency team at the scene but she died as a result of her injuries before she could be hospitalised.

JUST a reminder that there are two holidays coming up next week, on the 9th and 12th of October. Tuesday is a holiday across the Valencian Community while Friday is a national day off. Shops, town hall offices and banks etc. will be closed on both days while most supermarkets will also be shut. Stores in certain shopping centres and the odd one in towns may be open but it is best to check first. If Tuesday or Friday is your town’s market day it will probably not be going ahead but in many cases will be held a day earlier - again best to check. Monday may be a “puente” or bridging days for some schools, but this will be

determined at town hall level. Tuesdays “Dia de Valencia” celebrates the region’s autonomy back in 1238 when Rey Jaume freed Valencia City from the Moorish rule. There will be celebrations of this in many towns and a major timetable of events in Valencia City. Friday’s “Fiesta Nacional de España” commemorates Christopher Columbus first stepping foot in America’s. This day has caused some controversies in recent years due to its colonial roots and there are regular calls for it to be changed. It is also Armed Forces Day and there will be a large programme of military parades in Madrid.

Easyjet blasted for stopping mum breastfeeding BUDGET airline Easyjet has been criticised for stopping a mother from breastfeeding on a flight to Spain. Therapist Kelly Edgson-Payne was told that she had to stop feeding her son during take-off, despite the firm’s own website saying mothers are welcome to breastfeed at any time. She was told she could feed the child later in the flight but she would need to be discrete about it. Kelly said on many flights the practice was encouraged during taking off as it settles

the baby. The male attendant who asked her to stop spoke to a colleague who later apologised to Kelly, saying he had been mistaken. The family, two adults and four children, had paid extra to book seats next to each other so there was never any chance of her feeding next to a stranger. Kelly has been offered a ₤25 voucher by Easyjet, but she said it was more important that their staff were aware of both the law and the companies own guidelines.

Happy ending in horse drama

FIRE-FIGHTERS were called out to a rural area in Valencia after a horse had fallen in an underground water tank and become trapped. The incident happened in Molino de l’Amor and a troop from Requena attended the scene, joined by a vet and local police. The call came at about 7 pm and

A woman has asked how a man who has been found guilty of sexually assaulting her is still allowed to live in the same apartment block as she does, a situation causing her “grave anxiety”. The man assaulted her four years ago and was found guilty at the original trial and has lost two subsequent appeals. He has been sentenced to two years in jail and issued with a restraining order against his victim. However he has launched yet another appeal and, pending this hearing, his sentence remains on hold. His parents live in the building and despite the restraining order he visits them every day and often stays over, a situation the police seem unprepared to take any action on. The unoccupied craft greeted early morning visitors to the beach on Wednesday and local police are

trying to determine who owns the boat and how it came to end up on the beach. Other incidents over the summer included three other boats being washed ashore in separate incidents, a yacht sinking at Cova Portitxol and a boat catching fire off the Sardineria.

Green giants get the chop TWO 17 metre tall pine trees located in the playground of a school in Sax had to be chopped down for safety reasons last week. The pair were planted 80 years ago but their condition has been deteriorating for the last few years. The council had previously tried to save them by strengthening them with steel cables but a recent survey decided that a strong wind could cause them to topple.

They were cut down on a weekday, meaning that there was some disruption at the school, the Cervantes de Sax. Local roads were also closed while the work was carried out. 80 years may seem a good lifespan for a tree but some pines are amongst the oldest living things on the planet, an estimated 5,000 years old.

The builders, Joca, have not carried out any work on the project since January, something which the council has described as a clear breach of the terms of the contract. This also means that the €100,000 initially paid to the firm under the tender agreement can be reclaimed. In turn, Joca has ten days to appeal the termination of the contract if they wish to do so. Mayor Jose Chulvi wanted to assure residents that the project will still go ahead although obviously, this action will mean further delays as another contractor needs to be hired.

that the property was full of farm equipment and rubbish. Apparently, the younger man was well known in the town and recorded music videos in a local club as a part-time job. It is not clear why no-one thought to report the pair as missing; the police think they may have been dead for up to two months.

Convicted rapist strikes again

A man who was out of jail on a licence while serving an 18-year jail sentence for rape attacked and stabbed a young woman in Valencia City last week. His victims’ wounds are not life threatening according to a statement released by the police.

Detained after a decade on the run by Simon Russell

A Spaniard who was described as one of the most wanted men in Europe has been arrested in Salamanca (Castilla y Leon). Esteban Vacas was found guilty of the rape of his partner’s daughter, a minor, but absconded before his jail sentence started. The 49-year old’s disappearance precipitated a Europe wide manhunt but no trace had

been seen of him since 2006. The Ministry of the Interior has been posting regular notices on platforms such as Twitter asking the public to be vigilant and contact the police if they saw anyone matching Vacas’ description. It has not yet been disclosed what led the authorities to the fugitive’s hideout in the Nicar area of Salamanca.

THE Local Police in Alcoy has started the mammoth task of teaching all compulsory age schoolchildren in the municipality about road education. There are about 4,000 students of pre-school, primary and secondary school age spread over 18 education centres in the city. Contents differ depending on the age of the children, with infant

and primary school kids learning about traffic signs, safety when walking and zebra crossings among other things. With secondary school pupils, the training will cover cycling, moped safety, how to help traffic accident victims and general adult road safety. Usually, the police will go to the various schools to give their lessons.

JUST under 200 people took part in the 11 summer excursions laid on by Denia during July and August. Billed as a chance to discover the town’s landscapes, well known and not so well known, the tours were arranged by the Department of the Environment. The trips were in the late afternoon or evening, to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the cooler weather. Spots visited included the dunes on Playa Raset, irrigation terraces, the caves at Agua and the Montgo, Albarda gardens, ecological orchards and the marshes at Pego-Oliva.

A Place in the Sun Live – our experience –

Sun Lawyers would like to thank all the interested parties that stopped by at our stand at the Place in the Sun Live exhibition in Birmingham. With a increase in numbers of 5% from last year, it is clear that the British people still have their heart on buying in Spain. The Sun Lawyers team had a chance to show off their expert knowledge on property purchases, relocation, together with other legal matters, regarding Spain.

Pressure was on for advice to beat the approaching Brexit deadline; we had queues at the stand on Saturday that we had never seen previously. Our team found people were brushing aside any fears they may have and moving ahead,

Potential property buyers kept us busy asking questions on all aspects of legal matters in Spain, and when would be the right time to buy. Sun Lawyers will be continuing their association with Place in the Sun into 2019 and we look forward to providing you

There was plenty of interest for the Costa Blanca, with Murcia & Almeria following closely behind, Spain being a key focal point.

MAY STANDS FIRM by Alex Trelinski

UK PRIME MINISTER Theresa May told the Conservatives that her Brexit plans were in the national interest, as she closed their annual conference in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Pursuing “our own visions of the perfect Brexit” could lead to “no Brexit at all,” she warned delegates. Mrs May said she believed “our best days lie ahead of us”, adding: “Don’t let anyone tell you we don’t have what it takes.” The Tory conference was dominated by Brexit, with former foreign secretary Boris Johnson launching a fresh broadside against her Chequers plan for trade with the EU. May once again ruled out a second Brexit vote in her speech, saying that it would be undemocratic:“A second referendum would be a politicians’ vote. Think of what it would do to democracy… Politicians telling people they got it wrong and to vote again.” The Prime Minister stated that she wouldn’t allow Northern Ireland to remain in the EU in order to avoid a hard border. She added that the UK

SPANISH RESIDENCY Register as a resident As an EU citizen you must register as a resident if you plan on living in Spain for more than 3 months. If you are here for a total of 183 days in a calendar year then you are classed as being a tax resident of Spain and should be registered as resident. You should register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros (immigration office) in the province where you live or at the designated police station. You will be required to provide documents to support your application which currently is: • •

• • • •

NIE - your foreigner’s tax number The form S1 if you are a pensioner, SIPP card or proof of private health insurance Confirmation of payment for the residencia in the bank The completed residency application form Passport Proof of income

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management

You must be able to demonstrate that your life in Spain is financially sustainable. You will be expected to show bank statements that cover the previous three months and that you have a monthly income of above €800 per person.

There has been some confusion recently about the length of time a residencia applies. If you are a member of an EU country then your residencia does not need to be renewed. If you are not, then renewal is every five years.

If you have come to Spain to work then your employer should provide you with uncertificado de vidalaboral – which is proof that you have work here.

Older residence certificates are larger (A4 size) but are still valid. You do not need to apply for a credit-card-sized certificate unless your circumstances change (for example your address) or unless you want to.

If you are under pensionable age then you must have proof of health insurance if you are not on contract to work. The insurance must cover everything and you may also need to show proof of payment. There are local health schemes in many parts of Spain that might be an alternative. The Spanish authorities will issue you with a credit-card-sized residence certificate with your: • • • •

Name Address Nationality NIE number (Número Identificación Extranjero) • Date of registration

de

After you have been registered as a resident for five years, you can apply for a certificate of permanent residence in Spain. You will be issued with a similar credit card size Residence Certificate, but it will additionally state that you are a permanent resident (residentepermanente). For those that obtained their residency card before the 29th of March 2014 and have been living in Spain since then, it will be easy to obtain a permanent residency card if they do not have one yet. Please, check if your residency card is named as “residentecomunitario” (EU citizen resident) or “residentecomunitariopermanente” (Permanent EU citizen resident).

CANADIAN Donna Strickland became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for physics in more than half a century this week, joining the renowned Marie Curie on a list of only three female scientists that have ever won the accolade. She was awarded it jointly with Frenchman Gerard Morou for their work on optical pulses. Seatbelt infraction leads to war crimes arrest At a police awards ceremony it was related this week how a local police officer in Denia started the chain of events that has led to a Serbian man currently standing trial for war crimes in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The officer stopped a car in July because there was a child standing on the back seat and not properly restrained. When asking for ID he noticed that the driver had several different ones in his wallet and had tried to pass some to his wife. When the car and man were searched they found six different false IDs from Europe and South America.

by Simon Russell

Another passenger, the driver’s brother, was asked for proof of identification and his appeared to be in order. However the agent reported his suspicions and after a National Police investigation it transpired that the passenger, the driver’s brother, was travelling under false ID and was actually wanted for war crimes carried out between 1992 and 1995 during the Bosnian conflict. The local police officer has revived a commendation for his part in the arrest.

Tiki Beach battle continues

The owners of Benidorm’s most iconic beach bar are calling on the support of its legions of Worldwide fans for help in a last-ditch attempt to stop an enforced closure. Last week, following an eighteen month legal battle, Spanish Supreme Court judges called time on the famous Levante beachfront cocktail bar, Tiki Beach, ordering its immediate closure. However, local residents and holidaymakers were surprised to see the rowdy venue trading as normal this week, despite the court order. In fact, the bar is merely in a stay of execution, awaiting a date of closure to be issued by the court, which they have yet to receive. This closing date is expected to be given on Friday and is likely to be within the

by Andy Mansell

next four weeks. In the meantime, Tiki Beach fans and clients have caused a media storm, with the story hitting the pages of the British tabloids, as they mounted social media campaigns and online petitions to reverse the decision to close their favourite Benidorm bar. In truth, the media frenzy is unlikely to have any effect on the supreme court’s decision, as legally the bar’s owners have reached the end of the road, with nowhere left to turn. The controversial venue, which opened its doors around ten years ago, sits underneath the Santa Margarita apartment building, one of the older blocks on Levante beachfront, popular with elderly Spanish residents and long-term

visitors, seeking a quiet life in the sun. With its combination of sunny seafront terrace, cheap drinks, live music and DJ’s throughout the day and night, Tiki Beach quickly established itself as the most popular venue on the beach, with hordes of revellers regularly spilling out onto the promenade in Summer and Winter. Local residents have complained repeatedly over the years about the loud music, boozy tourists and the rowdy, lewd atmosphere, with groups of stags and hens partying into the small hours. Following these complaints, eventually, in April 2016 the owners were issued with a closing order by a regional court but continued their fight by taking it to the Supreme Court.

Last week’s decision, which came down on the side of the residents is final and cannot be appealed against. Distraught Tiki Beach fans have issued thousands of online messages of support over the past few days in the hope of a reprieve, some even claiming they will never visit Benidorm again if the bar closes. One anguished poster wrote, “Pointless going back to Beni now,” whilst another Brit tagged a pal in a post about the news, writing: “We won’t be going love”. However, others were a little more pragmatic, “You could take away 20 of the best bars in benners and it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference, it would still be the best getaway on the planet!” said one. Pointedly, one comment

in a Spanish newspaper, said, translated into English, “Just in case, they opened another, some time ago, also on the Levante beach and with a level of music that is probably heard from the City Hall, but ... there it is.” Perhaps, Tiki Beach has

merely become a victim of its own success, as, over the years, many similar bars with large, sunny terraces and all day entertainment have opened to compete with them and will be more than ready to take care of their former clients.

Benidorm Moors and Christians Another week, another Moors and Christians fiesta takes place in one of the Marina Baixa municipalities. This weekend it is the turn of Benidorm to host the spectacular fiesta, which dates back centuries to a time of conflict on the Valencian shores, when the Christian inhabitants battled

by Andy Mansell

with their Arabic invaders. The festival concludes in the same fashion each year, with the victorious Christians driving out the vanquished Moors. Nevertheless, this does not detract from the enjoyment, as, although the Benidorm version is perhaps

not quite as spectacular as those in neighbouring Altea and Villayosa, hundreds of residents and visitors alike flock to enjoy the flamboyant parades, mock battles and firework displays. The festivities began on Thursday October 4th, with a beach confrontation between soldiers of both

sides, continuing on Friday October 5th with a morning procession at 10.30h, through the streets of the Old Town from the Paseo de Colon. Later on in the day at 19.00h, the action moves to the mock castle situated in CalleGambo, where war is declared by the Christian leader.

Saturday is the day of the main parade, which sees representatives of both the Moors and Christians dressed in authentic period costumes, parading through the streets from Calle Tomas Ortuna to Plaza San Jaime, beginning at 20.00h. On Sunday’s final day, a solemn procession at 13.00h featuring a flower offering

is followed by a parade of floats and marching bands, follows a route, beginning in Calle Tomas Ortuna, ending in Plaza Hispanidad, adjacent to the City Hall. With food and drink stalls on hand throughout the fiesta, plus market stalls selling trinkets and gifts, the fiesta is popular with all ages.

Homeless for a year

IT is now more than a year since the residents of part of the Antonio Català apartments in Dénia were forced to leave their homes. The eviction order came about after a municipal inspection found the structure to be unsafe. However, the inhabitants affected say that the Town Hall has done little to help

Unemployment creeping up THE number of people out of work in the Valencian Community increased by just under 2,000 last month, a rise of 0.52% from August. August had also seen a small increase in the unemployed although for the year as a whole the figures are down by around

20,000. The number of unemployed people in the Valencia province actually fell in September but the increase in Castellon and Alicante meant that the Community overall saw a rise. Unemployment generally rises in the area

at this time of year due to the large amount of seasonal work, although efforts are being made to reverse the trend. Eventually it is hoped that a significant number of seasonal jobs could lead to all year round contracts but experts admit that this is still a long way off.

Three days with our feathered friends WORLD Bird Day was on 3 October and in recognition of this Denia is laying on some ornithological diversions over the weekend. Today (Friday 5 October) the focus is on urban birds and from 5 pm to 8 pm there are various events in the Interpretation Centre of the Montgo Natural Park. These are

free for all and include family workshops with guides on how to construct a nest box and about bird ringing. On Saturday there is a guided birding tour through the Montgo Park, starting at 9 am and running until midday. A bus will be laid on from the Torrecremada Park for anyone who wants

to attend. On Sunday there is another guided tour, this time through the Pego-Oliva Marshes with its large variety of bird life. Action called for over traffic black-spot THERE have been renewed calls for action to be taken regarding the CV-740 road that connects Javea, Benitatxell and Teulada, a notorious traffic black spot. There have been at least 33 accidents which the DGT has classed as serious in the last six years, including 11 fatalities. Opposition

party for Javea, Podemos, officially denounced the situation this week via the Diputacion de Alicante. There are stretches of the road where the hard shoulder has crumbled away, making it unsuitable for both pedestrians

and cyclists and hazardous should a vehicle break down; four deaths have been blamed on this alone. Podemos have called for the broken stretches to be repaired with immediate effect and other measures, such as road widening, to be taken in the short to midterm.

La Vilajoyosa Hospital N332 access road demanded Eighteen municipalities served by the Marina Baixa Hospital have joined forces to formally request a new access road from the medical facility to the nearby main N332 trunk road, which passes just 50 metres from its doors. Currently, staff, visitors and even ambulances have to negotiate a six kilometre route from either of the existing exit roads leaving from the highway, which was constructed as a bypass to the original N332 coastal road. When the demand, which was originally drawn up last week, was issued, the only town in the region not to sign up was

by Andy Mansell

the municipality in which the Hospital sits, Villajoyosa. However, La Vila mayor Andreu Verdu met with members of the board who organised the petition, to add his towns backing to the campaign. The ‘So close, So far’ campaign points out that when the bypass was constructed, the Hospital was forgotten by planners from the National Ministry of Public Works. This unfortunate oversight has caused years of traffic chaos on roads around the Hospital as the demand for its facilities grew.

Verdu explained that, the Hospital is “in a process of expansion due to population growth and increased health demand, which although it makes this situation more pathetic, also gives us the opportunity to correct this deficiency.” A new access road would improve the performance of ambulances to and from the facility, as the distance from the bypass to the doors of the Emergency department is only around 50 metres. Staff have set up a display in the Hospital reception area, offering patients and visitors the opportunity to add their signature to the petition.

THE TeuladaBenitatxell Water Consortium met last week as work starts on plans to expand the desalination plant that serves the needs of much of the area. Capacity for the plant will be increased from 6,000 to 8,800 cubic meters for

serving Teulada and from 2,800 to 5,800 for Benitatxell. The number of households that can be supplied after the expansion will increase from 5,000 to 11,000 and will effectively guarantee water supplies for the next ten years said the Consortium.

The Floating g a b t s o P fireworks could return Dear Sirs,

The latest disruption to Ryanair’s flights and the total disinterest by the company in providing passengers with compensation should come as no surprise at all. I suffered last autumn because of a “lack of pilots”, and had a flight to the UK rearranged nearly a week later. I vowed never to use them again after that, but there’s a big problem. They have a strangle-hold on the routes that I need to travel on, and until we get some big time competition for them at our local airports, they will carry on shrugging their shoulders knowing that they have a captive market. Ken Burns, Benidorm. As the Brexit negotiations meander on, I’ve read some of the latest proclamations from the UK government over what happens over a “No Deal” in regard to air travel and pet passports. Social media sites round here are full of hysterical predictions of Armageddon that’s looming come March, but mark my words, the politicians will cobble up something to save face. At least the useless Theresa May has had the good grace to guarantee the status of EU nationals in Britain if everything goes pear-shaped, but we’ve not had the courtesy of a similar response from Brussels.

THE Loreto Castle fireworks display that fell foul of laws to prevent forest fires a few years ago could be making a comeback if proposed modifications to the laws come through. The law banned fireworks within 500 metres of protected

solution that many people prefer to the old display. If the modification of the law goes through as expected the council will probably consult those most affected such as fiesta associations before deciding how to proceed.

Pathetic, and I write this as an EU supporter! Jenny Rushby, Santa Pola.

tendencies than we twolegged creatures have instilled into ourselves. As such, if they want to run off and chase that bird, then chances are they will try to do just that. It’s in their nature. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of an embarrassment. Whether that’s going to the toilet in inappropriate places or running riot in the pub, there’s no denying we’ve all seen it happen, and as any expert will tell you, the solution isn’t particularly easy. Successfully passing on obedience and good behaviour takes time and commitment, but don’t be put off - follow these simple rules and you won’t go too far wrong. Show them what it means to be a good leader Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to

behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that. Walks must involve discipline Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn’t wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning over-excited. It’s also a good idea to walk out of the house ahead of your dog when setting off, so as to show it who’s boss. Understand your breed P a r t l y thanks to man’s penchant for and understanding of a dog’s ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality t r a i t s a n d attributes. It’s vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet.

Allow time for mental exercises, every day Here’s where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions. Simply giving them a physical run-about isn’t enough - their minds need to be stimulated in order to take on board the instructions you’re giving them. Assign your dog a task before it gets a treat It’s no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man’s best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don’t come for free.

Clostridium difficile What is it?

Clostridium difficile, also known as C. difficile or C. diff, is a bacterium that can infect the bowel and cause diarrhoea. The infection most commonly affects people who have recently been treated with antibiotics, but can spread easily to others as the bacteria are passed out in the diarrhoea and turn into resistant cells which are known as spores. C. difficile infections are unpleasant and can sometimes cause serious bowel problems, but they can usually be treated with another course of antibiotics. The most common symptoms are: • watery diarrhoea, which can be bloody • painful tummy cramps • feeling sick • signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, headaches and peeing less often than normal • a high temperature (fever) of above 38C (100.4F) • loss of appetite and weight loss In some cases, serious complications can develop, such as damage to the bowel or severe dehydration, which may cause drowsiness, confusion, a rapid heart rate and fainting.

Who’s most at risk of C. difficile?

Treatment for C. difficile can include:

C. difficile mostly affects people who: • have been treated with broadspectrum antibiotics (antibiotics that work against several types of bacteria) or several different antibiotics at the same time, or those taking long-term antibiotics • have had to stay in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or care home, for a long time • are over 65 years old • have certain underlying conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), cancer or kidney disease • have a weakened immune system, which can be because of a condition such as diabetes or a side effect of a treatment such as chemotherapy or steroid medication • are taking a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to reduce the amount of stomach acid they produce • have had surgery on their digestive system

• stopping the antibiotics thought to be causing the infection, if possible – in mild cases, this may be the only treatment that’s needed • taking a 10 to 14-day course of antibiotics that are known to kill C. difficile bacteria • rarely, serious infections may require surgery to remove a damaged section of the bowel C. difficile infections usually respond well to treatment, with most people making a full recovery in a week or two. However, the symptoms come back in around 1 in 5 cases and treatment may need to be repeated. You will be infectious until 48hrs after the diarrhoea has stopped. Good hand hygiene is essential to prevent the spread.

Walking improves general health and well-being The importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aids to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether youre a stay-at-home Mum, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with others, alone, or even with your dog, and doesn´t require a personal trainer.

“walking is a load-bearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people” It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking is a loadbearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking. There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn’t have to be chore. Starting a walking programme is as easy as walking to the local shops and walking the children to school rather

than driving or taking a bus. Begin by taking a walk in your lunch break and see the increase in your mental performance at work during the afternoon, or walk in the evening and experience a much better quality of sleep. Walking in open countryside or the local park adds another pleasant dimension to your exercise.

into your route for extra benefit. This will help burn off calories and increase cardiovascular fitness, and once a good level has been reached, try power walking at as fast a pace as you can manage during the middle section of your walk. Enjoy striding out, getting fresh air in your lungs and appreciating your surroundings as you go along.

“You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health” But while you take in the beauty of the local flora and fauna along your chosen route, focusing on the quality and distance of your walking can dramatically benefit your wellbeing a n d increase fitness. After a few weeks o f easing yourself into the habit, try to walk more briskly and add some uphill stretches

You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health. At this point you may consider joining a rambling club to enjoy your new found exercise with others. Ramblers meet for regular walks in stunning surroundings, and tackle walks for all levels of fitness. You may even find you make some new friends to share your new exercise regime with. Details of these clubs can be found on the internet or at local libraries.

Full steam ahead The number of Spanish home sales logged in the national Land Registry rose by 18 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Sales were up in every mainland region, including Alicante

Province, as the property recovery continues to gather significant steam. There were 41 and a half thousand sales in July, but if you take in the more recent returns from the Notaries’ Association, that figure is boosted to just over 52 thousand.

As cranes have popped up across the region since the start of 2018, figures for new home buys have gone up by five per cent based on the Registry returns for July. Not surprisingly, the largest areas of house buying growth have been in areas favoured by British and other foreign buyers.

Upward trend

HOUSE prices have increased by nearly five per cent in Spain in the third quarter of 2018, according to the latest report published this week by property valuers Tinsa. The third highest regional figure for growth in Spain was Alicante Province at just over 13 per cent, compared to the same period in 2017.

by Alex Trelinski

Property prices in the Murcia region have gone up by just under eight per cent in the last quarter, with the average period in buying a house in Spain going down to seven point eight months. The Tinsa report says that the greatest pace of price hikes over a year is in the capital of Madrid

at 15.6 per cent, whilst if you are looking for a real bargain, the Cantabria region has actually seen a price drop of one per cent. Prices are rising significantly in coastal regions like the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida, whilst Tinsa says that 16 cities have seen falls compared to the same period in 2017.

Kitchens: The heart of the home, once again Look back to the cookery shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s and you can see exactly where our kitchen inspiration came from - the anodyne, sleek, chromeclad kitchens of professional chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal. All of a sudden the warm, cosy kitchens of our parents, the kind of kitchen which Grand Dame of home cookery Delia Smith would have prepared a roast chicken dinner in - wooden cabinets, tiled floors and floral curtains - were out. Instead, we were pouring concrete, installing stainless steel ranges and finding new and ingenious ways to open cupboards without using anything as unsightly as handles. The home kitchen became as close to the galley of a top London restaurant’s backroom as it was possible to get: a functional space in which to create cordon-bleu spagbol and show off our collection of vintage Burgundies in the sleek built-in wine rack. But unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few years you can’t have failed to notice a change. Yes, many of us are still looking to Poggenpohl and Tecnocucina for sleek lines and white, white, white, but even more are putting the heart back in to the kitchen. It’s been happening for a while. Cath Kidston and Emma Bridgewater have been tempting us with spotty egg cups and cutesy 1950s inspired cutlery, Nigella Lawson has been extolling the virtues of her Kitchen Aid mixer as she licks yet another mixing bowl clean and Nigel Slater has made the move from print to television, picking ingredients from his allotment garden to make

cosy suppers in his homely TV kitchen which might have the limited colour palette of the 1990s cookery show kitchen but which exudes welcoming warmth with bare wood and earth tones. It’s a fair bet to make that even Heston Blumenthal might have been swayed to adding a little splash of colour back at his home where nobody can see it. Once again an Aga is the top of the kitchen wishlist. In every colour going, it’s almost a shame not to buy one in bright red or retro yellow - even Ms Bridgewater has designed one in her trademark country kitchen-esque primary colour spot. A cast iron range is undoubtedly the central feature in any family kitchen worth its salt, but if you can’t afford one (and they are ludicrously expensive) adding heartfelt character to your kitchen is simple. Patterns such as spots, stripes, hearts and stars are cute and colourful whether on crockery, cutlery or just your tea towels. Attaching a devil-may-care attitude to tidiness is a must too, within reason…open shelving filled with colourful bits and bobs, pretty bottles, cookbooks and retro finds look great while hanging your utensils above the stove or even pans from a ceiling rack has an olde worlde vibe and makes everything easy to find. There are endless ways to bring your kitchen in to the 2010s but the most important thing is to make it a living space once again.

Top 3 tips for selling your property •

The perfect time to sell is when you’re ready to sell

There is no right or wrong time to sell. When you decide you are ready to sell market your property immeadiately

PROPERTY transactions for the Marina Alta in the second quarter of 2018 were at their highest levels in 11 years. Data from the Ministry of Development showed that there were 1,678 completed sales between April and June, the most in any quarter since the 1,707 recorded in the last quarter of 2007. These figures seem to confirm the strong recovery in the local real estate market

Choose your estate agency carefully

Do your research, look for a responsive agent with good communication. Look at the agents social media pages to see what others thought of their service and how they communicate with clients.

Fix material defects, don´t spend unnecessarily

Signs of poor maintenance can put off sellers but speak to you agent before starting major renovations in the hope of adding value.

and reflect overall growth in the Spanish economy. The last set of good figures preceded the financial crisis that rocked Spain and saw the property market slump. Although there are no indicators that things are heading in that direction this time around, experts are still cautious in the light of previous experience.

Breakfast bunch join cancer fight OVER a hundred people took part in a Solidarity Breakfast organised by AECC, the Spanish Association against Cancer, in Alfaz del Pi this week. The event was held in Plaza de los Escoles Velles and the final amount raised was announced as €538.46. Very much a multinational event, the AECC wanted to thank those people who donated sweets and cakes as well as those who took the time to attend and donate to this valuable cause. The local Councillor for Health, Marisa Cortes, in turn thanked the AECC for their initiative in organising the event. Talking about the AECC in Alfaz, the board of the charity have said they are always looking for new recruits and volunteers of all nationalities. Their aim is to make everyone in the town aware of the work they do in the fight against cancer, and the vital help they give to those affected and their families.

Bavaria, Beer and Benidorm Lovers of German beer and food will be in their element over the next ten days as the Benidorm Oktoberfest returns to the resort’s Plaza Hispanidad square.

by Andy Mansell

The event, now in its fourth year, which began as a mini two day festival in the area around the old town tapas alley, has grown to an eleven day event with a weatherproof marquee erected to house the various stalls selling authentic German food and artisan

beers. Launching this year’s Oktoberfest, Jesus Carrobles, councillor responsible for fiestas, explained the festival will provide funds towards, the big Benidorm fiestas in early November, the largest of the year in the resort, describing it as “a daring initiative that we hope will have a positive and massive

response from residents and visitors”. Fellow organiser, councillor Miguel Torres, said the aim is “to be as similar as possible to the famous one in Munich, and to let everyone know that the Oktoberfest is a family celebration, in which parents, children and grandparents can have fun and sample the

best gastronomy. “ In addition to the Bavarian beers and authentic culinary delights, such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pork knuckle, pretzels and sauerkraut, visitors to the festival can enjoy traditional music from two native German bands, The Mati German, and Einprosit Polka amongst other musical offerings.

Several months ago an exciting new project began in the north Costa Blanca town of Albir. News soon began to filter through that the town would soon have a new Bavarian style brewery restaurant. With its inauguration on the 29th September, in time for the Oktoberfest celebrations, and taking the German word for pint, Seidel opened its doors for the first time. On this memorable day for the restaurant our reporter, Steve Kenyon, joined the party to sample the beer and to chat with Mr. Robert Egler, the company owner. Steve Kenyon- Firstly, on behalf of The Weekender, let me congratulate you and your team on the day of your opening. The concept of combining a brewery and a restaurant is certainly new to the area. Please let our readers know what gave you the idea. Robert Egler- Thank you for visiting us today and for your warm wishes but any congratulation should be shared with my partners also. My wife Irina Egler is my life and business partner and co-founder of the company. Our other partner, Maxim Mozgovoy, is away at the moment and returns at the end of October. Steve Kenyon- What made you choose Albir as the location of your brewery restaurant? Robert Egler- My first answer would be, Why not? Albir is a beautiful town. The area, including Benidorm is a huge attraction for tourists

from all over Europe. There are many English, Belgians, Germans and Norwegians, just to mention a few of the nationalities here. All of which are beer loving nations. This is why we decided to establish a brewery restaurant. We chose the Bavarian style as my family has Bavarian roots. Steve Kenyon- I see from your Facebook page that you brew the beer here on the premises. Robert Egler- Yes that´s true, we brew four beers, Helles, which is a lager beer; Dunkel, a dark beer; Weizen, a white beer and a pale ale. All the beers are non filtered which means they are alive. Steve Kenyon- Who brews the beer, do you do it yourself? Robert Egler- As the owner it is only right that I possess the knowledge to do this but we have a master brewer here at Seidel. He graduated university as a chemical engineer and with this and his experience in brewing he is able to deliver to us a very high quality and consistent product. We have the capability of producing 3000 litres per week with reserves up to 10000 litres.

Steve KenyonEveryone knows that a good beer is dependent on the quality of the water used. What water do you use, tap water? Robert EglerAlthough the tap water here in Albir is a decent quality we prefer to use mountain spring water. We have this delivered, 6000 litres at a time from Algar. After being kept in tanks containing a small amount of Sterling Silver the water is pumped to our preparation zone. Here the water goes through various stages of filtration to remove excess calcium and other unwanted things. Finally passing through a UV device resulting in water similar to that used in Bavarian breweries. This is why our beer drinkers are very happy. Steve Kenyon- Do you have a message for our readers? Robert Egler- Yes, Guys, please remember that today beer is cheaper than gasoline. So don’t drive, drink beer. Furthermore, in Seidel each weekend in October we will be celebrating Oktoberfest with lots of beer, chasers, live music and dances.

This is our timetable,

Friday and Saturday nights, live music, clown performances and dancing. Sunday mornings (10 am until 2 pm), FrĂźhschoppen (breakfast) with live music. I would like to thank Robert, Irina, Maxim and all the team for their hospitality during the opening party and wish them all the luck in their new and exciting venture.

NEW Mazda MX5 Who doesn´t love the Mazda MX-5? More than a million have been sold since the original was launched in 1989 and the latest model arrived to universal praise in 2015. Three years later and it’s still one of our favourite sports cars on the market. The MX-5 has never been about 0-62mph times, instead, it delivers a pure, lightweight driving experience combining incredible handling and a short, snappy gear change. A rev-hungry four-cylinder petrol engine combined with a raspy exhaust note is enough to please the majority of MX-5 buyers but that doesn’t mean some don’t wish it had a bit more power. For the 2018/9 MX-5, Mazda’s not bothered with the usual cosmetic updates we´ve come to expect from a mid-life facelift. The visual design updates include the alloy wheels which are offered in a slightly different shade of grey although you’d have to be a true MX-5 fan to spot the difference. However, both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines have been upgraded. The entry-level 1.5

is up just 1PS but the 2.0-litre now has 184PS, up from 160PS. It’s this engine that is tested here. With that power boost, the 2.0-litre now hits 62mph in 6.5 seconds, 0.8 seconds quicker than before. Although it does feel faster than that. For the first time ever, the MX-5 now feels almost as quick as the ubiquitous hot hatch. Spin the engine towards the new 7500rpm rev limit and the car surges forward, while the MX5’s compact dimensions and low seating position means you’re totally immersed in the whole experience. The unchanged sixspeed manual gearbox one of the most enjoyable shifts ever fitted to a road car, you’ll find yourself changing gear for the fun of it, also helped by well-placed pedals and a sharp throttle response. For the first time, start-stop technology has been fitted to the MX-5 to help it pass new fuel economy tests. It is not a huge change and you will not notice it until you put the MX-5 in neutral, release

the clutch and the engine intentionally stalls. If you’re not in the mood for driving too enthusiastically, the MX-5 is a little compromised. You’ll feel the bumps in the road and the steering is a little fidgety for smooth motorway

driving. There’s also a lot of wind noise, the drawn back of the fabric soft-top MX-5 compared to the RF with its folding hard-top. Practicality has always been the MX-5’s downfall. It’s not that the boot’s small it’s the lack of storage space

inside the cabin that is more of an issue. There are a few cup holders but no glove box or door bins. There’s some useful storage behind the seats, but nowhere to stash your mobile. The MX5 isn’t transformed, if you never

understood the attraction of them, it still won’t appeal to you. But if you are an MX-5 person, the latest model is just that bit closer to perfection. If you want a two-seat convertible, we don´t think there is anything else that competes for the same money.

2019 BMW 3-Series

THE seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan benefits from significantly enhanced sporting prowess, a new design language, extensive refinements to its premium ambience and trailblazing driver assistance, control & operation and connectivity technology. It had it´s World premiere

this week at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, with it´s initial deliveries expected on 9th March 2019. It benefits from a new powertrain technology with higher output, greater pulling power and optimised efficiency. There will be Six engine variants available from launch, four-cylinder

petrol models, four-cylinder diesels and a six-cylinder diesel unit. With outputs ranging from 110 kW/150 hp to 195 kW/265 hp The 3-Series also fetures BMW´s new Intelligent allwheel drive, available from launch in the BMW 320d xDrive Later in 2019 a BMW

M Performance version is escpected along with an extremely efficient hybrid model. The car has noticeably sharper driving dynamics courtesy of it´s extensively upgraded chassis, new damper technology, stiffer body structure and suspension mountings, wider

tracks, minimised weight, a low vehicle centre of gravity and even 50 : 50 weight distribution. The new interpretation of the familiar BMW sports sedan uses clear lines and taut surfaces to showcase the car’s modern aesthetic, sportiness and presence. The Advantage, Sport Line,

Luxury Line and M Sport models enable precise customisation. The standard specification gains full-LED headlights and stylishly darkened LED rear lights. Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight for non-dazzling high beam and front foglamps available as options.

FRIDAY 6TH JULY 2018

Ball’s up for breakfast It seems the jury is still out on the BBC’s choice as presenter of Radio 2’s flagship breakfast show, replacing the soon to depart, Chris Evans. Their announcement this week, confirming that Zoe Ball will take the helm at Britain’s most listened to breakfast show in January was met with what could only be termed as muted enthusiasm. Zoe, who is the first woman to hold the job on a permanent basis, described the accolade as an “honour and a privilege”, telling Evans live on radio, “This is bonkers, can I just say? I am… a crazy mix

of elation, wanting to burst into tears, thinking about running away. But mainly, thrilled.” Evans own choice as replacement was apparently Sara Cox and I have to say I agree, with him and one social media poster who wrote “good bye radio 2 until Ken comes on.” Good luck Zoe, because, following in the footsteps of the blessed ‘Sir Terry’ and ‘gobshite Evans’, I think you’re going to need it. 172 words …… celeb gossip page Andy Mansell pc attached

Oscar buzz about Gaga

Even though it’s yet to be released in the UK or Spain, A Star Is Born, featuring Lady Gaga’s movie acting debut, is hotly tipped for Oscar glory. Gaga and co-star Bradley Cooper, basked in the glory of its multiple ‘Five Star’ reviews at the UK premiere recently. The pair beamed as they walked the red carpet in London’s Leicester Square, ahead of its first official British screening. A Star Is Born’ is a remake of the classic film first made famous by Janet Gaynor in 1937, with subsequent versions starring Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand. It tells the story of unknown singer-songwriter Ally (Gaga), who is discovered by country rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) and the pair subsequently fall in love. It has already generated huge Oscars buzz, despite it being Gaga’s first film role and Bradley’s directorial debut. Lead song from the movie, Shallow, was released on the same day as the premiereand shot up the iTunes charts across the globe just moments after its unveiling, prompting the track to already become a huge favourite to bag the Best Original Song accolade at next year’s Oscars. As big a fan as I am of the Gaga, if her acting is anything like her last outing in the TV show American Horror Story, (which I watched recently and understood less of at the end than I did at the beginning), she won’t be winning a Best Actress gong.

My Eyes Over the Rainbow

FRIDAY 8TH JUNE 2018

Mr Geoffrey

Sad news this week for anyone who watched kids TV in the late seventies and eighties, with the death of ‘Rainbow’ presenter Geoffrey Hayes who’s died, at the age of 76. Who can forget the presenter, known as ‘Mr Geoffrey’ to his lovable cast of character, who took the helm of ‘Rainbow’ from presenter David Cook in 1974, and remained with the programme until 1992. He served as the human companion to the other residents of the ‘Rainbow’ house, including Bungle the Bear, George the pink hippo and Zippy, the humanoid character famous for having a zip across his mouth (often used to silence him during his louder moments). If only that zip could be used on some of today’s TV presenters ……. Chris Evans anyone?

Years of Giggles

One of the UK’s favourite daytime programmes, This Morning, turned thirty recently, with many accolades being afforded to the show for its informative content, controversial interviews and ground breaking campaigns. However, for its millions of viewers the programme will probably be remembered for the chemistry between the presenters, most notably Philip Schofield and his female co hosts and their fits of giggles which break out at any sign of sexual innuendo. Over the three decades, there have been many, but my favourite was an early one, as he was tasting a particularly tasty cut of roast meat, when his fellow presenter Fern Britton turned to him and said, “ See, you don’t mind dunking your beef, do you? “ Cue, what seemed like a minute of hysterical laughter, from them, from the audience and from me, who can’t watch it even now without dissolving into uncontrollable giggles.

Yesterday .... I could remember the words!

Seventy six year old former Beatle, Sir Paul Mcartney has revealed he often forgets the lyrics to his famous hit songs. The seventy six year old, self proclaimed, ‘Grandude’ to eight grandkids has admitted, he’ needed to relearn some of the Beatles most iconic songs because he has forgotten them. In an interview with 60 Minutes, he said: “When I’m doing shows I listen to a lot of music, Beatles music, Wings music, to see what ones we’re gonna do. And to learn them. The star, who told how the band had “too many” songs with “very hard” chords, also

revealed he has written a book for children. McCartney said: “I’ve got eight grandchildren and they’re all beautiful and one day one of them said to me ‘Hey Grandude!’ “I said ‘What?’ and I thought, I kind of like that, so from then on I was kind of known as Grandude. “So I thought, you know what, it’s actually a nice idea for a book, so I started to write some stories, and then I talked to the book publishers and they liked what I was doing.” Ok Sir Paul, so you worry about forgetting your words, I’m lucky if I can find my trousers in a morning.

Say hey to YE Mr Kim Kardashian, otherwise known as rapper Kanye West, has become the latest in a long line of celebrities to change their name to something a little more ‘interesting’. Following in the footsteps of fellow rap stars Puff Daddy and Snoop Dogg and the late Prince, West would now like people to address him by the name Ye. The star made his name change ‘official’ by also changing his Twitter name too and tweeting ‘the being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE’. However, not all his legion of followers were

impressed with Ye’s new monicker. One responded, ‘I miss the old kanye,’ while another added, ‘Prince could do that because he had great talent. I think you know where I am going here’. Another called him out on his grammar, writing, ‘As a self-proclaimed genius, you’d think he would know its formerly, not formally.’ West has apparently used the nickname Ye for years, while it’s also the name of his eighth album. The self-proclaimed ‘God’ is set to release his ninth album very soon, which will be named Yandhi.

R tes © 2017WBest for Puzzles Drop Quo Copyright Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

MARINA ALTA The Arts Society Marina Alta and it’s friends got together before

the start of the Autumn season to support local artists and their work in a convivial atmosphere. September 26th was a truly British summers day ( tumultuous rainfall, soft showers & scorching sunshine) more than 540 brave souls, made up of TASMA members, guests, local visitors and exhibitors walked through the doors. Local organiser Helen Granville and here team, once again, provided a really sound and efficient base for the exhibitors, and Miguel of Salones Canor and his team provided tapas and drinks of the highest standard throughout the day. Our exhibitors, as one expressed their admiration for the work of the support team and many committed to carrying on the tradition next year. Many of the works on show found buyers and a terrific day was had by all. Davidglover Publicily@marinaaltaarts.com

PEGO GOLF SOCIETY

MATCH October 2nd 2018

Today we had 36 players for a Singles Stableford Match at Oliva Nova Golf Club.. Although the weather was beautiful the course was still in very poor condition. We were joined by 3 guests, Larry Ryder, Thomas Britton and Peter Sturdy. The results were as follows: Division 1 1st place Malcolm Wise with 35 points playing off 12, 2nd place also with 35 points Andrew Harrison playing off 19, 3rd place Mick Connolly with 33 points playing of 20 and 4th place Brian Barden also with

Andrew Atkinson

33 points playing off 22. Division 2 1st place with an incredible score of 43 points was Jim Hayward playing off 23. I was in his group and he hardly put a foot wrong all day. He even had to push his flat battery trolley for the last few holes. Big cut looming! 2nd place with a great score of 37 points was David Blakely playing off 23, 3rd place Roger Miller with 36 points playing off 32 and 4th place our Captain Dave Phillips with 36 points playing off 36. Nearest the Pin on hole 5 was Shaun O’Gorman with

3.38m and on Hole 16 Celia Cronin with 0.76m. There were 3 twos today made by Russ Peters, Brian Barden and Celia Cronin. One match was played today between Donna Green and John Guest and again it was all square. So they must play yet again. Next week we have a singles Stableford competition, any guests wishing to play, subject to handicap contact Penny Barden on pegohandicapsec@gmail. com

Frankie Dettori will be looking to pull out all the stops when riding Enable in Sunday’s Arc de Triomphe to land one of the world’s showpiece races in Paris. “Frankie loves the filly”, said Enable trainer John Gosden, ahead of this weekend’s race in France. Enable, looking to retain his 2017 Arc de Triomphe title, who won at Kempton in September, ridden by Dettori, won five group one races last year and is on track for more success after suffering a knee injury in May.

El Cid BC return to the Winter League with a win over neighbours Benitachelle BC.

After a year out of the Big League El Cid Bowls Club showed they were not back just to make up the numbers with a good win over near neighbours BBC. Making home advantage pay Winter League Captain Derek Randall led by example bringing a 22 – 13 win on Rink 3 assisted by Stewart Beattie, Graham King and Adrian Lambert. On Rink 4 Pat Metcalfe, Ros Dingle,

“Enable is in the hands of a master trainer. There’s no one like John Gosden for getting the job done. The filly is awesome”, said Dettori. Gosden said: “Enable is high class and probably the best mile and a half filly I’ll train.” In the Prix de L’ Opera Longines Group 1 Magic Wand 3.50; Battash 4.35 in the Prix De ‘ L Abbaye; and Pollydream 5.15 in the Qatar Prix De LA First G1 race, are all expected to run well. At Ascot on Saturday in the

Shirley Payne and Anita Randall had a 17 – 14 win and on Rink 2 Paul Leeder, Paul Trunchion, Helen Hall and Bernie Isaacs enjoyed a narrow win 15 – 14. Cumberland Lodge Stakes Laraaib, trained by Owen Burrows, looks set to go close in the 2.25 race having finished behind classy Poet’s Word in the Prince of Wales and King George. “If he pleases me at home we’ll have a look at Ascot. His run against Poet’s Word got us excited,” said Lambourn trainer Burrows, whose stables suffered a virus this season. Ascot’s Challenge Cup sees Roger Varian trained Emmaus 3.35 tipped for success with Richard Hannon’s All Out tipped in the Neptune Investment

Rink 6 Clive Scott, Jimmy Paveling, Pat Arnett and Floyd Williams fought well but went down 11-17. 3 wins plus overall shots gave El Cid a win 8 points to 4 with BBC taking the points in a 1 shot win in the Berleen. Derek Randall thanked BBC for an enjoyable match but the overall feeling was “it’s good to be back”

Listed race at 4.10 over 7 furlongs. At Newmarket Andre Fabre’s entry in the Kingdom of Bahrain Stakes over 1 mile, Wind Chimes 3.15, and Richard Hannon trained Wedding Date 3.50, in the 150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes over 6 furlongs, are tipped. At Redcar Alfie Solomons 2.45 runs in the Redcar Two year old Trophy Listed race over 6 furlongs; and Above The Rest 3.25 runs in the Racing UK EDF Stallions Guise borough Stakes, over 7 furlongs.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Alfaz Fantasy Football League for the second week running clocked up another high scoring week with the average score again reaching over 30 points thanks to another exciting week in the Premier League. The 9 games gave the Fantasy,22 goals,6 clean sheets,24 yellow cards and once again no red ones. In the last few weeks, the Referees seemed to have slowed down in their distribution of cards, maybe they are saving them up for Christmas! Well, it’s all change at the top of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with 2 teams taking control and both managed by the same Manager John Doris. The top team Tarazara jumped up from 4th place to the Summit after collecting 48 points courtesy of his Manchester City defenders. His other team Wee Aggies are only 5 points behind the leaders while last weeks front-runner Pauline’s Vodka Army have slipped down to the 3rd spot. No

movement at the bottom as Gary’s team Upside Team stay there but they have closed the gap on Kim’s Ginger United to only a couple of points. Harley’s Ginger Ninjar have taken full control at the top of our Junior League with a 29 point advantage over young Ollie’s team Olly F.C.We have 2 teams in 3rd place with William & Harry and Brad & Ants both just 3 points away from Ollie’s team. At the foot of the table, Gian’s team Fleetwood Gian are going nowhere as this week 8 of his Players didn’t score,2 picked up a point and then Southampton’s Bertrand came up with a minus 2. (unlucky for some Gian) Our Mark Carter Ladies Section is being closely contested at the top with Pauline’s Vodka Army hanging on to the top spot by the skin of her teeth with Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team only 2 points behind. Linda’s Team Tapas and Sue’s Blue Devils are nicely

placed in 3rd & 4th positions. Down in the basement, Kim’s Ginger United are suffering from the Mourinho Syndrome effect with 9 of her team playing for Manchester United which means she is in deep trouble unless the Portuguese Manager can turn the Reds Season around. Jackie’s team Winchester are just above Kim’s team and is also an avid United Fan. There is no movement at the top of our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Across the Costas as Kevin’s team Two for the Road have managed to fend off the challenge from former leaders Des’s Wigan Champs who are only 2 points behind. Big Sam’s Army’s quest to win this Section seized the chance to make ground up on the pace-setters when they moved up 10 places to 3rd with a little help from Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson’s brace of goals against Fulham. Liz’s Cookies Crew remain in the bottom spot just a single

point adrift of Joanna’s Hugonauts. We have three teams entering our Monthly Wine Draw and they are Nathan’s team The Boy’s Special and Laura’s Legends who both tops scored with a tally of 57 points. The other team to join them is Gian’s Fleetwood Gian who didn’t bother the scorer this week. In our Champion of Champions League, Pauline’s Vodka Army have had their lead slashed at the top to a slight 2 points advantage by Jin Dream Team while just 5 points behind them are Keith’s Max & Paddy who have made good progress this Month. Dave’s team The Hatters are still holding everybody else up at the bottom. Manager of the Month for September has been kindly sponsored by Darren & Scott at the Saritas Restaurant in Albir who provide an excellent Indian Cuisine. This Month’s lucky winner

is Keith’s team Max & Paddy who just pipped Joe’s team Keith Lard F.C.by 3 points to claim this super meal for 2 at Saritas Restaurant. The Revolution have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz after moving up the most places this week from number 118th to No 57. The Draw for the Preliminary Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition is now up on our website and takes place this weekend. The current leaders of the A.F.F.L. Tarazara have drawn Mike’s team Super Saints while our top Lady team Pauline’s Vodka Army take on The Travellers. If your team is not in the Draw it means you have a bye into the next round(you lucky Devils). Good luck to all the teams this weekend who are taking part in this great Competition. WARNING International Break ahead!

HEARTBROKEN KOEPKA

BROOKS KOEPKA says he is “heartbroken” that one of his tee shots at the Ryder Cup last Friday resulted in a spectator losing the sight in her right eye. The American’s drive on the par-four sixth hole veered off course and struck Corine Remande, 49, who had travelled from Egypt to Le Golf Nacional in Paris. He said his “stomach sank” on learning she had been blinded, but Remande was full of praise for his concern, but angry about the lack of concern from event organisers. A Ryder Cup spokesperson said that the tournament organisers had been in communication with her family and that they would “continue to offer support for as long as necessary”. Organisers now face the possibility of a legal suit from Remande, who is recuperating at her parents’ home in Lyon. Remande says that she is only looking into it in order to be paid for her medical expenses. by Alex Trelinski

UP YOURS, SIR NICK! Tennis - Shanghai Masters 2018 - Sky Sports Action - 07:00

THE RYDER CUP returned safely into Europe’s hands in Paris on Sunday, and Thomas Bjorn’s wildcard pick, Sergio Garcia, had a big hand in what turned out to be a massive win. The 38-year-old, coming off the worst season of his professional career, shook off the cobwebs to contribute three points to the European cause, and in the process, became Europe’s all-time leading points winner. The Spaniard then

by Alex Trelinski

unloaded both barrels at Sir Nick Faldo, who’s had harsh things to say about him over the years. Faldo, though one of the greatest players in European history, had a poor time as Ryder cup captain. He was at the helm of the 2008 team that was upset by an American journeymen squad, a result bad in itself. Not helping matters was Faldo’s rapport with the media and his

own team, infamously calling Garcia, Europe’s biggest star, “useless” at Valhalla. Garcia, who had scored 8.5 points in his previous two Ryder Cups, managed an 0-22 record that week. On Sunday, speaking to Sky Sports, Garcia felled Faldo with this comment when asked what it felt like to hit the all-time points mark:“This means a lot to me,” Garcia said. “I have passed some of my heroes today— and Nick Faldo.”

LAST CHANCE SALOON

AS JOSE MOURINHO’S excuses for Manchester United’s poor start to the season come quicker than the flowing waters of Niagara Falls, it’s hard to see how the Old Trafford board will tolerate anything but victory at home tomorrow evening against struggling Newcastle United. At least likeable Rafa Benitez has a good excuse in the shape of still-Toon owner Mike Ashley for his side just having two points on the board after their return to the Premier League. Beleaguered Mourinho pulled a

by Alex Trelinski

new excuse rabbit out of his tattered hat to explain Tuesday’s goalless Champions League home draw with Valencia:- It was the fault of the Greater Manchester police. Under-fire Mourinho claimed the preparations were hindered because the team arrived late at Old Trafford because the cops refused to escort them from their hotel, and they had failed to take account of the rush-hour traffic. The match kicked-off five minutes

late, and United have been subsequently charged by UEFA for being late on parade. Fans booed at the final whistle on Tuesday night, and one senses the game will be up for the Portuguese coach if three points are not bagged tomorrow night. Pick of the weekend clashes sees second-placed Liverpool entertain champions and leaders Manchester City on Sunday, whilst third-inthe table Chelsea kick-off earlier at Southampton.
