Double homicide shocks Finestrat

Guardia Civil detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a young Spanish couple in a house on the outskirts of Finestrat village, have not ruled out the involvement of a third person. The officers are trying to piece together the circumstances leading up to the deaths of Pedro Llinares, aged 40 and Maria Blasquez, 33, last Tuesday afternoon, as the latter had been placed on the VioGen at risk register for gender violence on

two previous occasions. They were despatched to the rural house in Alquiera, around a kilometre from the village centre, following a call from a man, who claimed to be the current partner of Maria. The caller expressed his concerns that something may have happened to Maria, as he had not heard from her and he hadn’t seen her at his work. Continued Page 3 www.moraira-hamiltons.net

Finance Feature provided by...

Some important dates for your diary With “The Finance Tour’ returning to Spain for the third time this October, I wanted to encourage any of my regular readers who are considering pension or investment advice here in Spain, to do their best to attend. The Finance Tour is a unique event here in Spain, as it brings 3 heavyweights of the investment and pension world, to venues local to us here on the Costa Blanca. It seems every week there is some finance related event to attend here in Spain, but these tend to involve local companies or offshore fundhouses, who are often tied to a financial advisory. The Finance Tour is Spain’s only truly independent finance and pensions seminar and it brings 2 FTSE listed investment companies – The Prudential and Rathbones, along with a one of the UK’s oldest private pension trustees, James Hay Partnership, to your doorstep. You will have all heard of

The Prudential, a company with over 25 million clients Worldwide and a track record that dates back over 170 years. Rathbones are also a house-hold name in investing, established in 1742, and recognised as one of the World’s leading investment management companies.

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial As before, Chorus are very honoured to have been invited to attend. One thing to emphasise, is that The Finance Tour is NOT a financial sales seminar. Chorus will be there purely to explain how the financial advice process works in conjunction with product providers and fund managers, and how this helps to create a tailored financial solution for you. We are very much behind the ethos of The Finance Tour – and that is to educate and inform, rather than take a sales based approach to these events. You’ll leave these events armed with knowledge that will help you make informed decisions should you ultimately decide to seek financial advice here in Spain. The events are free to attend but places are limited. For information and bookings please visit www. thefinancetour.com or call 693 107 044.

Finestrat shooting From Front Page On arrival at the property, the agents discovered the two lifeless bodies and called for senior detectives and forensic offers to attend the scene. Maria, who had worked as a waitress at several cafes in Finestrat, was found with wounds to her neck and back, whilst Pedro who was employed by a construction company, died from a single gunshot. Although the officers believe Pedro, who they

Ranting air rage racist to be prosecuted in Spain A story that has quickly made the leap from UK social media to extensive coverage in the global mainstream has taken a dramatic turn, as Spanish authorities have confirmed they will be prosecuting an airline passenger caught in a racist tirade. The elderly white man, now named as David Mesher aged 70, was seen calling 77 year old Delsie Gayle a string of names after staff on the Ryanair flight, which was on the runway at Barcelona, tried to sit her next to Mr Mesher. He called Mrs Gayle, who is disabled, an

“ugly black b*****d” and various other unprintable and racist phrases before the situation was defused by Mrs Gayle being moved. As well as the obvious reaction to the man’s rant, Ryanair has also received criticism for not taking action with many feeling Mr Mesher should have been removed from the plane. Most passengers also stood by doing little while the pensioner was verbally abused. The story may have ended there but Barcelona’s Deputy Mayor,

Jaume Asens, called Ryanair’s response “unacceptable” and has reported the incident to Spanish prosecutors. A “Daily Mirror” reporter tried to interview Mr Mesher at his home in Birmingham but he refused to speak to them. However his neighbours were more forthcoming calling him ” a racist pig and a bully” who blared out classical music at all hours and refused to turn it down. Mrs Gayle also spoke to the Mirror saying the whole incident had left her feeling depressed and shocked.

Kids used for s hoplifting spree A 33 year old woman has been arrested in Elche accused of eight counts of shoplifting, crimes carried out with the help of her three young children. The case came to light when police received several

complaints of theft from local stores. They believed there was a link and studied several hours of CCTV footage for clues. The common link

they found was a woman and her four children, one of them a baby or toddler in a pushchair. It appeared that she was entering the shop and talking with staff or generally diverting them. Her oldest

three kids would then steal goods while the shopkeeper was occupied. Items stolen included mobile phones, wallets and even money from the cash register. Police were able to identify the woman and this week

arrested and charged her on several counts of theft. Her eldest child, aged 15, also faces charges, although two younger ones who were also involved are under criminal age. They are aged 9 and 11.

Benidorm gambling pub Fire-fighter faces closure dies as rain by Andy Mansell

The future of a Benidorm bar hangs in the balance, after police discovered illegal gambling activity taking place on the premises. Local Police officers, who were on a routine patrol around the Rincon de Loix area of the resort early last Saturday afternoon, became suspicious when they saw a man leaving the Winning Post pub, on Calle Cuenca carrying a large amount of money and slips of paper. When questioned, the man explained the purpose of his visit to the bar, which prompted the officers to enter the premises. Once inside they discovered many more customers, placing bets on various sporting events, an activity which is illegal in Spain outside of licensed premises, which are

regulated by strict gambling laws. Following the intervention, the police officers confiscated five screens and around 1500€ in cash. A police source later confirmed that a report had been sent to the ministry of justice, who will make a judgement on the future of the pub in due course. The Spanish are a nation of gamblers and bet a higher proportion of their income than almost any other nation. Estimates suggest, that they gamble well over € 1.9 billion a year equal to around € 480 per head or some 15 per cent of the average net household income. They bet on almost anything, including

lotteries, football and racing pools, horse racing (illegal betting shops, where punters bet on foreign horse and greyhound racing, are common in resort areas), bingo, slot machines and casinos. However, the gambling industry is governed by strict regulations, designed to curb illegal betting activities, which take place without their knowledge and revenue earning capability. Even, seemingly innocent games of bingo organised by bar owners to generate custom, (often called names such as ‘housey-housey’), are technically against the law in Spain, where ‘Bingo’ is a registered state owned activity only allowed to take place in large bingo halls situated in each town and city.

pummels the Costas

THE predicted “gota fria” rains hit many parts of the north and south Costas at the end of last week with meteorologists saying it was the heaviest rainfall in a decade. In the Malaga region a fireman was swept away after his fire engine overturned. His colleagues escaped but sadly the body of the man, named as Jose Gil, was found the next day. Andalusia’s emergency services received over 500 calls in a 24 hour period said the authorities. In the Valencian Community the worst hit area was Castellon which experienced road closures and severe flooding with over 70 people having to be rescued from cars despite warnings to only make vital journeys. In Valencia province La Safor, especially the Tavernes and Gandia area, was badly hit on Friday morning with 220 square litres falling in a few hours and most roads being impassable. Alicante province got off relatively lightly in comparison

by Matthew Richards

although some towns still experienced extremely heavy rainfall. The next step is to weigh up the financial costs which could once again run into millions of euros, often in areas that still have repairs

pending from recent storms where rainfall was lower but high winds caused damage. As well as the costs to the town halls many individuals will this week be checking the small print on their insurance policies for everything from flooded properties to water damaged vehicles.

LOW COST carrier Ryanair has blamed strikes by pilots and cabin crew for a slide in half-year profits over the summer, but maintained its forecasts for the full year. The airline reported a seven per cent fall in profits to €1.2bn for the six months to the

end of September.. Profits were also hit by higher fuel costs and what boss Michael O’Leary called “the worst summer of ATC [air traffic control] disruptions on record”. However, traffic rose six per cent and its planes were 96 per cent full. Average fares slipped three per cent to 46 euros, but ancillary revenues - such

as luggage and seat reservation fees jumped 27 per cent to €1.3bn. RUSSIANS ACQUITTED

JUDGES at Spain’s National Court have acquitted 17 Russians over alleged large-scale moneylaundering in Spain on behalf of the Russian mafia. A Russian MP, Vladislav Reznik, was among those acquitted. Nine other suspects remain at large, including alleged gang boss Gennady Petrov. The court found insufficient proof that the Russians’ investments in Spain involved the proceeds of organised crime. The case focused on the so-called Tambovskaya-Malyshevskaya gang. Prosecutors had accused the gang, based in St Petersburg, of channelling

by Alex Trelinski

cash from offshore bank accounts into Spanish property and businesses. They alleged the gang’s moneylaundering started in the 1990s, when rich Russians began buying luxury villas in the Costa del Sol and Balearic Islands. In total, prosecutors said more than €50m of Russian mafia money was laundered in Spain. The lead prosecutor José Grinda was reportedly threatened due to his involvement in the case. In 2008, Spanish authorities carried out “Operation Troika”, arresting 20 Russian mafia suspects.

Teen abused A thousand kilometres by policeman from home

THE family of a teenager allegedly sexually abused by a police officer after she went to report a crime are asking how the man is still allowed to continue in his role while he awaits trial. The event has just come to light now but happened last month when the 18 year old had her phone stolen in the Madrid area of Arguanzuela. She went to the police station to report the theft and the officer who dealt with her at first seemed sympathetic. However she alleges he suddenly bundled her into a nearby bathroom and started groping and kissing her. The young woman managed to escape and ran

by Simon Russell

home from the station where the clearly traumatised teenager told her family what had happened. They immediately went to the same station to report the officer and an investigation was opened as well as a disciplinary file. However the accused officer remains active due to a quirk in the law, something many are questioning. Campaigners have also pointed out that in the most notorious rape case of recent years, the Pamplona “wolf pack”, one of the accused was a Guardia Civil officer and another in the military.

WORRIED residents in La Galia, a small village near Elche, reported the appearance of a man who appeared in the municipality apparently lost and disorientated, wearing dishevelled clothing. The local police spoke to the man who said he had no documentation; he indicated he had driven his car to the village but was unable to give more details including where he

came from and where the car was. After further investigation it transpired that the man had a European search order in place for him after being reported missing from Montpelier in France on 3 October, about 1,000 kilometres away from in turn contacted the man’s which he had neglected Elche. They contacted the relatives. Apparently he to take, adding to his Montpelier Gendarme who requires regular medication confused demeanour.

Ryanair Cabin crew admit viral photo was staged RYANAIR cabin crew filmed sleeping on the floor of Malaga airport have admitted that the picture was staged - although they say they have good reasons for the stunt. THE USO Union that represents Ryanair staff posted the image of six people in the Irish carriers uniform, seemingly having to sleep on the airport floor

by Simon Russell

after a flight delay caused by Storm Leslie earlier this month. It was meant to be a bleak comment on the firm’s policies but they have now admitted that this was a “visual dramatisation”. However they stand by their claims that the staff have to contend with

deplorable conditions for overnight stays, especially when unplanned. While they did not have to resort to sleeping on the public concourse floor, many say they did have to spend up to 13 hours in the cramped and unsuitable crew rest area with no accommodation being provided. The union’s posts are seen as the latest shot across the bows in the ongoing dispute between both sides which has also led to recent strike action.

Corvera transfers

FOUR out of the five airlines that used San Javier airport this year, will be transferring their operations to the new facility at Corvera, which will finally open in January, as San Javier closes. The one exception is British Airways, who said earlier this month that they would be scrapping their twice-weekly summer service to Heathrow, because it did not make enough money. TUI, Ryanair, Easyjet,

by Alex Trelinski

and Jet2 are transferring their summer and winter schedules to the long delayed state-ofthe-art facility at Corvera, but despite initial optimism from airport operator, AENA, no new carriers have signed on the dotted line. AENA have talked with Iberia and Volotea about operating from Corvera, but nothing has happened so far, despite the new airport long being trumpeted as a way of

bringing in new carriers into the Murcia region. The operator has admitted that their business plan has factored a reduced number of services at the new location for the next two years. assengers in the south of Alicante Province and the Mar Menor will have their airport travel times increased with the Corvera move, with Alicante-Elche airport offering a superior choice of services to Great Britain and Ireland.

Helping out with childcare

THE Ministry of Education has announced that the parents or guardians of just under 36,000 children aged between 0 and 3 will be eligible for financial assistance with childcare. These break down as 8,600 in Alicante, 24,000 in Valencia and 3,200 in the less populous Castellon province. Many educational centres have also now opened classrooms for 2 year old for the first time which are free to those attending. 248 schools with a total of 485 classrooms now offer this service which allows mothers in particular to re-enter the workplace earlier. The aid will cost the Ministry a total of just under 46 million euros, an increase of 34% from last year.

ALCOY is using new technology to help with the massive task of inspecting and repairing the town’s 115-kilometre long sewage network. Cameras will be used to help with the work which has been placed on a separate tender from the road cleaning contract which it used to be a part of. Aqualia is the firm that has been awarded the million euro contract and they have begun work in the Els Clots barrio which is known to suffer with problems due to an ageing pipe network. The Works and

Services Department admitted that the drainage system had been neglected at times on the basis of out of sight and out of mind. One of the main issues is the incorrect disposal of items such as wet wipes that are not biodegradable or suitable for flushing. An awareness campaign among residents is planned to help address this issue. Aqualia also now has the responsibility of cleaning the cities 5,500 drains and 4,400 wells.

THE Valencian food authorities have identified almost 5,000 kilos of octopus that was ready for commercial sale despite being a year and a half past it’s expiry date. More worryingly they estimate that about 1,500 kilos have already been sold. The frozen octopus product was originally from Pakistan and had been caught in the Indian Ocean. However the exterior labels were found to be different from those on the inside of the packaging and may have been altered fraudulently. The octopus was frozen in 2015 meaning the two year recommended expiration date was January last year. The unsold product has been impounded while enquiries are continuing into the whereabouts of the produce that has already been sold on. The distributors are based in Catral (Alicante), Valencia and Castellon.

Following a worrying Summer, which saw a sharp decrease in holidaymakers from the UK visiting Benidorm, tourist chiefs received some encouraging news, when the latest hotel occupancy figures were released last week. The report, compiled by the Hosbec hotel association, revealed a 92% occupancy figure for the first two weeks of October, which shows a slight 1% drop on the same period last year. “Although this data is possibly one of the best records at the national level, it represents a decrease of 1.2 points in relation to the same period of the previous year, thus maintaining this sustained drop of between 1 and 2 points that is materializing throughout the year 2018 “, explained a spokesperson from the association. However, within the data, the number of visits from the UK remained at the same level as last year, which is the first time this year that the figure has not shown a significant decrease. Since the beginning of 2018, BigDataHosbec statistics reveal that a total of 420,000 UK tourists have deserted

by Andy Mansell

Benidorm, to either visit other destinations or stay at home this year. Concerned tourism bosses put this down to a number of reasons, including the hot Summer experienced by the majority of Britain, coupled with the re-emergence of holiday destinations in tourist areas previously considered unsafe for travel. For instance, during the same period, Turkey (+ 71 %%), Tunisia (+ 40%) and Egypt (+ 46%), all showed big increases in tourist visits. Antalya, in Turkey, a province recently visited by a delegation of tourism and business leaders from Benidorm on a fact finding trip, has shown a 92% increase on last year’s figures. Further good news for the resort also emerged last week, when it received the Accessible Tourism Destination 2018 award, held annually, by theThyssenkrupp Home Solutions group, whichdistinguishes cities that provide tourism without barriers, an award that Benidorm will share with Cartagena (Murcia).

Sports councillor Víctor Ferrández, says that dog owners will be able to swim with their dogs this Saturday and Sunday at Torrevieja’s outdoor swimming pool at Sports City. The free sessions will run between

Ferrández said that all dog owners would have to bring all the appropriate documentation over their pets with them, and also sign a declaration., Ferrández added:- “This weekend sees the closure of the pool until next year, and so we are happy to provide a chance for dogs to enjoy a special experience, as Torrevieja considers itself to be a pet friendly city”.

Major pot plant raided THREE people have been arrested after a number of properties in the El Campello area were found to be used for growing and distributing marijuana. A total of 3,500 plants were seized along with 23 kilos of buds ready for sale making it one of the largest operations uncovered in the Marina Baixa. The buds had a value of around €125,000 while the plants had the potential to grow well over a million euros worth of marijuana a year said the police. The operation has been under-way since May, coordinated by the El Campello Guardia Civil. This had been triggered by the discovery of a marijuana plantation near

Social networks were also used to ask people to keep an eye out for the 12 year old pooch and their were possible sightings in the Valencia area but these

proved unfounded. The trail safe but tired after an 800 warmed up after the stolen kilometre round journey. car was found in Toledo, near Madrid, later the same day. However there was no sign of Pusa and the family started calling local animal protection associations in the area. Word came of a dog that had approached an elderly man in a Madrid town and clearly didn’t have an owner with it. The man kindly took it to a local vet who in turn checked it out and moved it to a dog charities pound. Nela was delighted to confirm this was Pusa and later the dog was returned to Valencia -

Car plant workers concerned at cutbacks

FORD has announced plans to stop production for a period at its giant plant in Almussafes near Valencia. The shut down is scheduled to be for 21 days in total over November and December with vehicle manufacturing being halted for 9 days and engine making for 13. Ford has blamed the “hard decision” which they say has been brought about by the fall in sales of their Kuga SUV model which is made there. However, there have been concerns

from the Spanish unions after President Trump has made it clear he wants major US manufacturers to reduce or even pull out of countries outside the US and “bring the work home”, threatening sanctions if they don’t comply. Management at the Valencia plant deny this is the case and say they are continuing negotiations with the unions.

Theresa May has said she is prepared to “explore every possible option” to break the deadlock in Brexit talks. She told MPs on Monday that 95 per cent of the terms of exit was agreed but the Irish border was still a “considerable sticking point”. While willing to consider extending the UK’s transition period beyond 2020, she said this was “undesirable” and would have to end

TAX FIDDLES CUT SPAIN´S government has passed some new anti-fraud laws to cut down on some aspects of tax dodging and business practice. That features the mandatory declaration of all money held abroad, as well as the cryptocurrency holdings and the documentation of all “operations” involving them. Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, announced that the new laws will require residents “with currency abroad” to declare it, including holdings of Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, which can be transmitted over international lines via the Internet. The new laws will also require, “the identification of the holders and the balances (held in) these virtual currencies,”

by Alex Trelinski

said Montero. Montero says that the new laws will help Spain raise around a billion euros by imposing, “anti-avoidance directive(s) on countries with ‘low or zero’ taxation.” The new laws will also impose fines of 150 thousand euros on firms attempting to use “dual-use software” to evade full tax obligations. A tax of 0.2% will also reportedly be levied on the purchase of, “listed shares with a value of more than one billion euros,” obtained in secondary markets by, “financial intermediaries with a monthly periodic settlement.”

Talks Sponsored By “well before” May Tel: 671 935 072 2022. Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn said the Tories were “terminally incompetent and hamstrung by their own divisions”. And the European Parliament Brexit’s co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt has said the withdrawal agreement was 90 per cent complete, rather than the figure of 95 per cent given by Mrs May. The Irish border remained the biggest stumbling block, he told a committee in Strasbourg, but he was confident a deal could be agreed before the EU summit in December. At last week’s EU summit, European leaders refused to sign off plans for a special Brexit meeting in November to seal the withdrawal agreement, saying insufficient progress had been made. But updating MPs, Mrs May insisted the process was moving in the right direction, with the future status of Gibraltar and the UK’s RAF bases in Cyprus having been settled in recent days.

In a world where our financial stability impacts almost every aspect of our daily lives, it is more important than ever to preserve what we have worked so hard to achieve. Unless you´re lucky enough to win the lottery, most of us have worked hard and for a very long time to achieve financial security and the lifestyle we want for ourselves and our families in retirement. We all remember Robert Maxwell and the Mirror Group pension scandal in the early 90´s, when innocent working people woke up to the horror that their pension contributions

had been used to subsidise his failing empire. The same happened when “Sir” Philip Green sold BHS for £1 in 2015, and this confirmed that even some of the biggest household names cannot be trusted with our retirement funds and financial future. SO, What Do We Do, You Might Ask?! Well it´s quite obvious from the above that we can never be absolutely protected against this happening, but what we must do and can do is to check out thoroughly and diligently the Wealth Management

A bridge too far?

WITH the not particularly inspiring words “I declare the Hong Kong-ZhuhaiMacau Bridge officially open” China’s President Xi Jinping cut the metaphorical ribbon on what is now the longest sea bridge in the world. However while noone can deny the feat of engineering, there are many who feel it is a move to bring Hong Kong further into the Chinese fold, threatening more of the former British colonies freedoms.

by Simon Russell

The structure cost $20 billion and is an impressive 55km long - about the distance from Benidorm to Alicante to put its length into context. As the name implies it links Hong Kong to the mainland city of Zhuhai and the enclave of Macau, the gambling capital of Asia. Despite the impressive stats, the project has been criticised by conservationists and taxpayers alike, at least

as much as you can openly criticise such things in China. Other dissenting voices come from the Hong Kong community who fear that their long-held freedoms compared to other Chinese will be further eroded now they have a physical connection to the mainland. There has already been a more tangible human cost the nine construction workers who died building the span and the 200 or so who were injured.

World record lotto jackpot

IT used to be that people who did the lottery dreamt of it making them a millionaire, but that seems like small change compared to the person in South Carolina whose winning ticket this week will make them a billionaire - $1.6 billion dollars to be precise or $1,600,000,000 to put it another way. The as yet unnamed winner confirmed as an individual and not a syndicate, has become the biggest ever single ticket

jackpot winner on the Mega Millions lottery, which may have to now consider changing its name. What could you buy for $1.6 billion I hear you asking? Well if cars are your thing the worlds most expensive is the Koenigsegg Trevita at $4.8 million, so you could have 330 of them, give or take. The most expensive house currently on the market is in France at $410M, so you could buy that four times over, assuming

something was knocked off for cash. What can’t you buy with your $1.6M? Well, should UK republicans get their way and Buckingham Palace came up for sale, you would need an estimated $2.2 billion to move in, though maybe a mortgage could be arranged? How about if the winner wanted to help pay off the US national debt of $21 trillion? Well, that goes up by $1.5 billion each day, so he could stop it from increasing for about 25 hours.

Lambos can’t buy you love

THEY say that money can’t but you love, though many would argue it certainly helps. However the embarrassing failure of a wedding proposal by an unidentified man labelled as a member of the Chinese “nouveau riche” may go some way to proving the old adage (well as old as 1964

when Lennon and McCartney penned the tune). In a clip that has gone viral on social media the man proposes to his English speaking girlfriend in a public square - by buying her a Lamborghini sports car. The woman looked a bit sheepish, before turning him down, saying “I’m sorry, I

don’t want to. I’m so sorry.” and started to walk away. The jilted lover did little for his remaining dignity by shouting after her “But I have money” to which she replied “So what?” and left. The lovelorn millionaire than proceeded to start kicking over the display of flowers he had laid on for the occasion.

Deadly synthetic drugs

IN the week that saw Canadians take to the streets to celebrate becoming only the second country to legalise cannabis, New Zealand was facing up to its growing problems with the synthetic version of the drug. Officially 45 people have died from using synthetic cannabis in the past year. However, most agree that the number is probably much higher, as it is so common amongst the homeless and uprooted whose cause of death is not always so thoroughly investigated. Synthetic

by Matthew Richards

cannabis was legal in the country until 2014 and is still widely available and cheap, much like spice in parts of the UK. However, this epidemic is killing people on a regular basis and the police say that there are entire neighbourhoods where everyone above the age of 10 uses it. New Zealand health officials admit the problem has caught them by surprise, with many confessing that they thought until recently that the effects

were similar to cannabis. However, the drug seems to have metamorphosed since the ban and many batches are manufactured with potentially deadly chemicals. Dr Paul Quigley, a specialist, said that it was “the worst and most unique drug he has ever come across” and many who don’t die are left permanently brain damaged. Those that take the synthetics describe it as incredibly addictive. However, as the effects only last about 10 minutes addicts need a huge number of hits each day.

Queen of the jungle

OFFICIALS at a zoo in the USA are baffled as to why a lioness killed her mate, the father of her three cubs. The incident happened at the Indianapolis Zoo this week when 12-year-old Zuri locked her jaws on 10-year-old Nyack’s neck. Keepers tried in vain to separate the pair but Zuri held on until her long-term mate was dead. Apparently, neither animal has previously shown any sign of aggression, either to each other or their cubs. The Washington Post spoke to Craig

Packer, from Minnesota University’s Lion Centre (nice work if you can get it) who said that their relationship was unusual in that the female dominated the male. “I’ve n e v e r

heard of a female that was dominating of a male, ever” Mr Packer said conclusively. He believes that the unusual combination of a meek male and a dominant female may have led to the fatal attack. The zoo’s Facebook page was filled with tributes for Nyack “He was the best part of the zoo.” wrote one about the famously noisy lion, whose roar was clearly worse than his bite.

Rotarians lead polio march

DESPITE the threat of rain, a good crowd turned out for the March against Polio at Javea Port last Sunday. This is part of a global solidarity event for World Polio Day (which was on 24 October) and the local march was

organised by the Rotary Clubs of Javea, Benissa, Denia, Teulada and Altea. The participants walked from the port to the Arenal beach area, carrying symbolic red balloons -

and a few umbrellas. World Polio Day was established by the Rotary Club at the beginning of this century on the birth date of Jonas Salk, who was instrumental in developing the first vaccine for the disease.

Dutch artists exhibit 'Light and Colour' in Calpe

From 3 to 29 November, the Dutch artists Jacqueline van Tol and Tania Hens will exhibit their colourful paintings at Galería de ArteContemporáneo in the historic centre of Calpe. Their passion for the special light and the colours of the Spanish coast inspired them to the joint Art Exhibition ‘Light and Colour’ or ‘Luz y Color’. With the positive energy that their creations exude, they invite us to connect with the source of light, colour, joy and harmony. For this exhibition they created

a painting together that they will offer to the municipality of Calpe. The official opening will take place on Saturday morning 3 November at 11 am at the GaleriaContemporáneo / Sala de ExposicionesAjuntamentVell, Plaça de la Villa 20, Calpe. Theme park fun run

BENIDORM’S Terra Mitica theme park hosts its fourth Solidarity Race on 4 November, aiming to raise funds for the Caritas charity. The park becomes an outdoor race track for the day with a five and ten kilometre run for adults as well as a special children’s race. The emphasis is on fun rather than

competitiveness and participants are also asked to provide non-perishable food (rice, pasta, tinned goods, oil etc.) or school materials for later distribution to local needy families by Caritas. Last year there were a thousand runners taking part who donated 4,000 kilos of food to the good cause.

Alfaz International Day rearranged

Disappointed organisers of last weekend’s annual International Day in L’Alfas del Pi, cancelled owing to weather concerns, are hoping to reschedule the event for this coming Sunday October 28th. Town hall officials decided to postpone last Sunday’s popular International Day, following severe warnings issued by meteorologists for heavy rain in the area last Sunday. Spokesperson, councillor Martine Mertens, explained

by Andy Mansell

the reasons behind the postponement, “Our first concern when scheduling events such as the International Day is always the safety of all attendees and for weather forecasts for these days and the possibility of occurrence of the episodes of heavy rain, we made the decision, following the recommendations of the Generalitat Valenciana, to postpone.” The event, now in

its eleventh year, is a multicultural gathering, designed to represent the multicultural population of the town, with stalls offering food and drinks from various countries, plus music and dancing from the participating nationalities. Should it go ahead, the event will be held at the L’Alfas del Pi Sports Centre, starting at 11.00h, with organisers promising a decision as soon as possible, once relevant groups have been consulted.

Organised and funded in collaboration with La Caixa Obra Social, the workshops are aimed at the over 30s with an initial group of 13 women and 7 men participating. A similar programme was run in March and resulted in over half of those taking part re-entering the job market. THE police in Dénia were alerted to two separate robberies last Sunday night, the theft of cash till from a shop and a house break-in where various items and cash were removed. CCTV footage showed the burglars to be the same two men in each instance who were already known to the police. They soon tracked down the pair and found them with the cash register as well as €3,000 in cash, marijuana and various items listed as stolen from the private house. The men, both Spanish and aged 26 and 28, have been detained in custody awaiting charges.

Benibus to keep on rolling

THE free bus service between Benissa’s town and beach that was piloted this summer carried more than 6,700 passengers and is clearly meeting a need for the town, said a council spokesman last week. However, if the service is to continue in the long term

by Matthew Richards

it is probable that some form of charge will need to be levied so that the route can at least break even. The bus ran over July and August and was particularly popular for those without their own

transport or with mobility problems such as the young and elderly. The charge will also mean that other stops could be built into the schedule and the service run for a longer period of the year, said Fernando Lopez, the town’s Councillor for Tourism.

AFTER over two years the structural work of the municipal building on Calle San Jose in Denia has now been completed. This property is set to house the library as well as some town archives and will also be used as an exhibition hall. The final step is in the hands of the council who need to furnish

by Simon Russell

the building to make it suitable for public use. The site is close to a cluster of other municipal buildings for the general public, including two museums and the principal storage rooms for the town archives.

Three cheers for U3A group leaders!

THERE are so many willing volunteer members of the Javea U3A – but the prize for the most industrious must go to one particular couple. Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie are group leaders of three groups: Spanish Culture & Cuisine, Travellers’ Tales and History. And the success of all three groups is testament to their unflagging diligence and attention to detail. Over the past month they have hosted a Travellers’ Tales talk and picture show of a U3A river cruise in Andalusia which they organised, a History presentation on the life of Spain’s famous flamenco dancer

Carmen Amaya, and most recently a Spanish Culture & Cuisine day trip to Les Coves de Sant Josep, La Valld’Uixo! The caves coach trip, experienced by 60 Javea U3A members, included a boat ride on Europe’s longest underground navigable river and a typical Spanish lunch in a cave restaurant. There was a huge round of applause for Angela and Tony as the coach returned to Javea at the end of another perfectly-organised event. A recent survey that shows the health system in Spain as the best in Europe comes as no surprise to me. Since I moved here a decade ago, I’ve been impressed with the service that I’ve got from my local medical centre and hospital. I have one slight quibble, which I know my doctor also goes along with, and that is the “queue jumping” that goes on at my medical centre by pharmaceutical representatives flogging their pills and potions. The waiting room was packed last week, and these reps just bound in to see the doctor, making the delays even worse. Can’t some system be designed to stop this happening, as it annoys patients and doctors alike?

What is it about these loud “banger” fireworks that seem to go off all the time, even though we might not be in a local fiesta week? I hate them anyway as my dog ends up being terrified, but all of my Spanish friends have no time for them either. It´s offical, pets make you happy

A recent study has shown that those of us that have a pet are more likely to be married, have children, be sucessful at work, have a degree and be happy. 2,000 adults over the age of 55 took part in the research. 1,000 of them were pet owners, 1,000 were not. Those that owned a pet were twice as likely to consider themselves a success in life. They were also more likely to be married and have found their perfect job. Owning a pet also proved important for their health and well being with pet owners exercising five times a week compared to just three times a week for nonpet owners. 45 per cent stated that their pet is the main reason they exercise and 31 per cent said their pet gives them a purpose in life. Oddly those pet owners that had a dog or a cat were also more likely to go on their dream holiday and volunteer for a charity. Pets were apparently responsible for making 6 in 10 owners laugh, which we all know is good for you! 7 in 10 owners felt

It doesn´t clarify if that was with or without other people. 45 per cent of pet owners said they never felt lonely thanks to their pet and regularly look forward to getting home when they can see them. 43 per cent claimied having a pet means they will always have ´someone´to talk to and a shocking 16 per cent claimed that they wouldn´t speak to anyone if it wasn´t for their pet. Although it wasn´t all good news for pet owners with the study revealiing that those without pets were more likely to have paid

Psychologists have long championed the emotional and psychological benefits of pet ownership. It´s not just the physical benefits of an improved exercise regime. Spending time with your pet can boost the bodies production of endorphins and oxytocin, making owners feel more relaxed and calmer. Pneumococcal vaccine

The pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. It’s also known as the pneumonia vaccine. Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia (a kind of blood poisoning) and meningitis. At their worst, they can cause permanent brain damage, or even kill. Who should have the pneumococcal vaccine?

Beauty tips for skin, hair and nails

1. Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliate a minimum of three times per week. Once per day is even better, especially if your skin is excessively dry. The exfoliation process removes dead layers of skin cells and gives your fresh, moist skin underneath a chance to breathe, as well as letting moisturizer absorb better afterward.

2. Moisturize and Protect Your Nails

For dry, brittle nails, rub petroleum jelly or a thick cream into your nails to hold moisture around and under your nails. If you do this at bedtime, slip a pair of thin cotton gloves on your hands before you to sleep.

3. Avoid Skin Destroyers

Eliminate these three unhealthy habits: such as smoking and sunbathing. Be sure to wear SPF and avoid prolonged time in the sun.

4. Put Eggs in Your Hair…Yes, Eggs

Mix one egg with a small amount of shampoo, apply to your hair for five minutes, and rinse well. This helps to feed the protein in your hair.

5. Wash Your Face with Natural Products

Clean your face and neck with a natural cold cream and follow with a rose water glycerine rinse twice a day to remove skin-damaging pollutants.

5 ways to make an old kitchen new again

It’s one of the questions the experts get asked most- how do you spruce up a tired corner of the home, and breath fresh life into it, without forking out for a completely new room? Focus that down on the kitchen and chances are most people start to feel even more baffled. As one of the rooms in the home we spend the most time in, and most money on, the classic image of a beautiful kitchen is impossible to remove from visions of brand new fitted cupboards, luxury ovens and top of the range white goods- a world away from words like ‘budget’, ‘quick’ or ‘cheap’. It doesn’t have to be this way, though. Whilst we’d never recommend trying to resurrect anything that’s clearly way beyond its sell-by date, there are a few comparatively low cost, low-effort ways to give your kitchen the aesthetic spring clean it has been crying out for. Here are just a few.

1. New cabinet and cupboard fronts Providing you spent decent money on a worktop (one of the most important things in the kitchen to spend money on), the first things to start showing wear and tear will be the cupboard fronts. Replacing these with

new doors, or even just new handles, is a like pans, baking trays and roasting dishes. surefire way to make the whole room feel fresh again. 4. Add under-cabinet lighting

2. New cabinets De-cluttering is a great way to improve the look of any space, and the kitchen is certainly no exception to that rule. By adding a few more cabinets you can maximise off-counter storage, thus making things appear far neater and, arguably, more contemporary.

3. Install pull-out cabinet shelves The modern world is short of space, so nothing says modern kitchen like one that offers intelligent storage. Installing pullout shelves in low level cabinets achieves exactly that, providing easy access to items

25

This might worry some people, but retrofit under-cabinet lights can be simple to instal yourself, and add a wonderful touch to a kitchen- flooding the work surface below with white light. The impact is practical, given it improves visibility for chopping and reading, but also really nice to look at.

5. Plate rack These can be added to the underside of high level cupboards, freeing up vital space elsewhere and turning your plates into something of a feature. Perhaps only really suited to homes that have interesting, or at least attractive crockery, nevertheless this is a relatively quick job, with a lot to offer.

MORTGAGE CONFUSION

Spain’s Supreme Court will decide on November 5th just who has to pay a tax on home mortgages, be it the banks or the borrowers. This appears to be a major turn round after the interpretation by some judges last week that it should be lenders who cover the cost, and not, as has been the case until now, the clients. The ruling – a reversal of a February decision on the same issue – triggered questions as to whether borrowers could claim the fee back, and from whom. The Impuesto sobre Actos Jurídicos Documentados (AJD) is a tax paid by the homebuyer

at the time of purchase when a notary officially documents both the sale and the loan. In the ruling made last week by a panel of six judges, the Supreme Court determined that the bank is the only party with an interest in getting the loan certified by a notary because this is what allows the lender to initiate foreclosure proceedings if the borrower defaults on payments. Because the lender is awarded this privilege through the public February decision confirming that document, the lender should pay purchasers are responsible for paying the tax. the fee, said the judges. SECOND HOME FIRST A recent survey says that Spain is the most attractive destination for investors seeking a second home abroad. Conducted by a global platform for holiday rentals, Spain ranked in first place, with 19.3% of respondents of those surveyed, followed by Portugal with 13.2% and France with 13.1% in third place. Of the participants who took part, 44% of resident owners of second residences in Spain were foreign. The largest groups hail from the United Kingdom (19%), Germany (12%), The Netherlands (4%), France (3%) and Belgium

(2%). Many owners of second homes subsidise their investments by renting them out for 19 weeks a year on average. Spanish owners of second homes obtain an annual income of €12,000, with 43% of 84% of owners seeing the same or an increased number of reservations in recent months.

House price rises not all they seem

Local - Property Kevin´s Top Tips

Kevin McCloud (Grand Designs) has provided these top tips for budding house builders: “The important thing when we are building new is to do it according to principles called fabric first, which basically means to build a house that has a good thermal mass, is well insulated, is triple glazed.” “What it does is stay cool in summer and warm in winter by itself,”

THERE have been concerns from industry experts that the recent sharp rise in Spanish house prices may not tell the whole story. Most of the rises are in new build properties while the second hand market remains relatively flat. One of the reasons for this, it has been reported, is developers at new builds are offering the first tranche of sales at a reasonable or even discounted price. They then offer future phases at inflated rates or in line with market value depending on the price of the first phase sales.

by Simon Russell

The effect of this is that when promoting the properties they can boast how good an investment the off build purchase is, almost instantly making you money based on the figures available. However people wanting to sell “used” properties are unlikely to be able to price them at the same level as new ones while those buying for investment may well be purchasing at the top of the market. There is nothing illegal in the practice and the rule as always is “buyer bewares”.

wind of concern

Breaking wind has become the latest issue to hit the over-stretched British courts, as a Tesco worker has launched a legal action after a colleague farted in his face. Atif Masood, 42, wants £20,000 for the harassment and racial discrimination he allegedly suffered at the branch in Thornton Heath,

s ´ e e t u amp h s i u g n a

south London. He said the farting amounted to bullying and has not received an apology from the supermarket, which he claims failed to investigate his complaint adequately. Mr Masood, who has worked for the chain since 2006, said he was targeted because he is a Muslim. A hearing is scheduled

29

for next year, and Mr.Masood claims that he has been racially abused after the incident. If there is a racist aspect to the farting assault, then Masood has a point, but it could just be a serious overreaction to a bit of innocent horseplay at work that has caused a lingering stench that nobody expected.

Javea in the black DESPITE the upcoming Xabia Negra Festival being only the third edition, it is already a firm fixture in the town’s cultural calendar. Billed as a festival of literature, cinema and photography, the emphasis is on the darker aspects of Javea’s past, a time of pirates, smugglers and other miscreants. The schedule was presented at a press conference given this

week by Mayor Jose Chulvi and Councillor for Culture Quico Moragues. Highlights include a book fair, authors round table, conferences, film screenings, a theatre route and gala. Some of Spain’s best known writers will be attending and there is also a twinning with the Bloody Scotland festival which will feature presentations

in English. One of the historical routes will be the re-enactment of the gruesome 1812 attack of Javea while theatre and film screenings will also focus on the dark past. The festival runs from 2 to 4 November, with the Friday being a “bridging day” for many after the 1 November All Saints Day national holiday. See www. ajxabia.com

Motoring

NEW Peugeot 508 Most second-generation vehicles have the wrinkles of the car that went before them ironed out. That’s how the second iteration of the Peugeot 508 feels. Although the original 508 wasn´t broken, except that initially it was powered solely by a turbodiesel engine, this latest generation 508 gets a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with an eight-speed automatic box. The 508 is a surprisingly lightweight vehicle although it’s almost 4.8m long. There’s more power available than with the first generation, much more in the case of the top of the line GT model. The modern downsized turbocharged engines are about finding the ideal mix of fuel efficiency and feistiness. The new 508 certainly feels livelier on account of its improved power-to-weight ratio. The standard new 508 weighs 1420kg with a 0-100km/h of approximately seven seconds. The original 508 was slower at approximately nine

seconds. A 1.6 turbo petrol engine was added to the original 508 line up later on in its life but the latest example offers more power still, even in base form. It is also at least 70kg lighter thanks to a new platform and the use of lightweight materials like aluminium for the bonnet, boot and front wings.

There is also a welcome increase in efficiency, partly as the result of two extra cogs in the transmission and improved aerodynamics. Combined fuel use figures for both new 508 models are improved. The new 508 provides 487L of easily accessible luggage space that expands to an almost flat 1537L area

after decommissioning the seat backs. The boot door is now powered, both for opening and closing, even on the base model. The slightly lower body helps create a more athletic look and improved dynamics. The

overall styling raises the emotional appeal dramatically. Gone is the cool conservative look and in its place a more sporting, muscular and almost predatory outline befitting of the lion badge. Peugeot calls it ‘elegant aggression’.

The front fascia now sports LED headlights in the top GT model. Both this and the GT Line have what has become the de rigueur grille design, with a jewelled appearance. At the rear it’s the same story, with more pronounced cat’s

claws in the three sets of taillights each side, giving an impression of extra width. While it can’t match the badge appeal of its German rivals, it puts up a fair fight in a highly competitive class.

Celebrity collection up for sale at NEC Motorshow production extended

Ford has announced that production of the Ford GT supercar will be extended by approximately two years, to meet overwhelming customer demand. Ford will re-open the application window to customers in selected markets, including the UK, for one month, beginning Nov. 8, delivering approximately 1,350 Ford GTs for customers worldwide. Prospective owners will be able to submit their applications at FordGT. com, and successful applicants will work with the Ford GT Concierge Service for a personalised purchase experience. “The response to our Ford GT has been unprecedented, with demand outstripping supply more than six-to-one,” said Hermann Salenbauch, director, Ford Performance. “By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultradesirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers in addition to

the 80 Ford GT owners in Europe who’ve taken delivery of their bespoke car to-date.” Production of the Ford GT began in December 2016, following the announcement of a limited run of 1,000 vehicles across four years. Successful European applicants from the extended production volume will be eligible for Ford GT vehicles produced in the 2020 to 2022 calendar years. Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, the Ford GT’s carbon fibre architecture and active aerodynamics help to achieve a top speed of 216 mph.

A collection of seven very special cars will be offered for sale by Silverstone Auctions from the highly exclusive personal garage of Jamiroquai front man, Jay Kay, at the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on 10th and 11th November. Leading the Jay Kay Collection is an incredible 2016 McLaren 675 LT, estimated at £230,000 to £280,000. One of only 500 cars built, the McLaren features over £50,000 worth of

optional extras courtesy of McLaren Special Vehicle Operations (MSO) and is finished in a tasteful shade of Chicane Grey with a grey and orange interior. “These cars from the Jay Kay collection offer something very special in terms of variety, rarity and quality,” says Harry Whale, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. “ T h e s e carefully selected cars from Jay K a y ’ s collection o f f e r everything from classic American Muscle to Swedish homologation specials. very interesting, be it low mileage, rarity or a desirable selection of options fitted. We’re delighted to have been entrusted with the sale of this collection of cars. It presents a fantastic opportunity for bidders at our NEC Classic Motor Show Sale”. Also on offer in the Jay Kay Collection is a rare 1996 BMW 850 CSI Manual with only 12,777 recorded miles. Tetley fever brewing!

Nothing or no one, it seems, is going to rain on Danny Tetley’sparade, as the Benidorm singer’s X Factor journey continues into another week. Danny spent most of last week fending off personal questions from journalists, following former friend Ashley Power’s revelations describing his recent battles with drugs and drink. Then on his first live show, the Bradford born singer was completely thrown, when the announcer called the name of another contestant Anthony

Russell, forcing the singer to pause and ask to begin his performance again. No worries for our Danny as he sailed through to next week, with a growing army of fans behind him. Following my Weekender story last week, we received a photo from a couple of likely lads, wearing appropriate T shirts of support for Danny, so thanks Norman Darlington and Paul Humphries, wear those shirts with pride …… and keep the ‘Tetley Faith’

Jamie Lee Halloween Queen Forty years on from her appearance in the original Halloween movie, Jamie Lee Curtis returned to movie screens this week, to reprise her iconic role in the eleventh and possibly final edition of the franchise. Returning to play, Laurie Strode, who faces her final confrontation with nemesis Michael Myers, played by Nick Castle in Halloween 2018, Jamie has expressed her delight at the movie’s opening weekend success in the states. This week, Jamie Lee took to social media to share her excitement at how successful the latest Halloween flick has been. She wrote on Twitter: ‘OK. I’m going for one BOAST post. Biggest horror movie opening with a female lead. Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55. Second biggest October movie opening ever. Biggest

Halloween opening ever.’ The fifty nine year old actress, daughter of movie legend Tony Curtis, ended the post with the hashtag #womengetthingsdone. The likeable and self deprecating star also told an Australian TV show that acting in a movie is not hard work, compared to most people’s everyday jobs. ‘Well let me say this, I’m in Australia. People work hard in Australia. They work hard all over the world but the people and friends I have here in Australia, people work really hard,’ Jamie Lee said. ‘And so for me to say it was hard work, somebody should like literally tell me to shut up.’ Good old Jamie, you’ve definitely gone up a few notches in my book, even though you do have a look of Paul O’ Grady about you these days.

My Eyes Strictly dramas Car show friday 8th june 2018

Only a few weeks into the interminable Strictly Come Dancing marathon, whi seems to go on and on and on forever ch through the mists of Autumn into the snows of Christmas. Already, controversy and drama circ les the top rated show, involving a kiss between comedian Seann Walsh and partner Katya Jones, which should or shouldn ’t have happened, depending which side of the sequinned fence you sit. Finding themselves in the elimination dance off last Sunday, the pair survived cha chacha into another week at the to expense of someone called Vick Hop e and her exotically named partner Graziano Di Primi, (yes, you guessed it …. Italian with long hair and shirt slashed to waist!). Apparently Vick got herself into hot water, by revealing on her Capital Rad io breakfast show, that producers had a discussion before the judges gave their final decision on Sunday night’s results sho w. A BBC spokesperson immediately defe nded the show by telling Radio Times allegations were incorrect. that the “It is categorically untrue to imply that producers tell the judges how to sco who to save,” the spokesperson said re or . “Each judge votes on each dance inde pendently, based on its merits and in their expert opinion alone. “The judges use an electronic voting pad to transmit their score or choice of who to save to the production gallery which is then locked in and cannot be cha nged. “Only after this does a producer spe ak to the judges, advising them on how long they have to speak and reminding them to give a reason for their decisions. The process was exactly the same this weekend.” Ok, so there we have it and of course, we can all trust the BBC ……..can’t we?

Yankee doodle Gucci We’ve all worn a baseball cap in our time, you know, on those days when we have a bad hair day (or no hair day, in my case!), or donned with shades, when we don ’t want to be recognised, slipping out of Lidl with a few cans of cider and an XXL packet of Doritos. Well, this humble piece of sports hea dgear has been elevated to new heig hts of sophistication with the news that Guc ci, have released a monogrammed vers ion of the signature New York Yankees baseba ll cap, with its iconic interlocking “NY” logo. Synonymous with the “celebrity hop ing to go incognito” look in airport loun ges and LA coffee shops, high profile cap wea rers such as The Beckhams, Jay Z, Kim Kardashian, MeghanMarkle and model Gigi Hadid are certain to be on the phone attempt ing to get their hands on one. Not sure I can quite afford the eye wat ering 315 pound price tag myself, but I’ll just wait, as they’ll surely appear on the shelves of one or two shops of oriental persuasion in Benidorm at a much more affordable price, within a few weeks.

frontmen switch lanes

Hard to believe it’s three years, since the acrimonious split between the BBC and former Top Gear presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, who took their questionable talents and massive egos off to Amazon TV in a multimillion pound deal. Whilst their new show, The Grand Tour, currently in filming for series 3 due to air later this year, goes from strength to strength, their old programme has been through nearly enough presenters to fill a minibus. Clarkson is set to hang up his keys temporarily, so that he can become the new presenter of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, due for an imminent revival on ITV for ten programmes in 2019. He joked that he would be using the series to get away from his The Grand Tour co-hosts May and Hammond. Meanwhile, over at the Beeb, two new presenters have been unveiled to follow in the footsteps of Chris Evans, who stood down after one ill-fated series and Friends star Matt

Leblanc who announced he was leaving after the next season of the show. New hosts, Paddy McGuinness and Andrew Flintoff, will begin their duties early next year, joining existing presenter and former racing driver Chris Harris to complete the new-look line-up. Quite what a comedian and former England cricket captain can do to revive the ailing car show remains to be seen, but if viewers turn off, it will surely be “No likey …. No lighty!”

The Greatest Show Album Of course, you’d be wrong, because the answer is …. Cue drum rolls and the dropping of jaws…..the soundtrack to the movie The Greatest Showman. The albumhas broken all kinds of records, spending more time at the top of the If you were asked which album charts than any disc since has spent the most weeks at 1988 and that includes Adele’s 21. number 1 in the UK charts during No one, especially the critics (What the last thirty years, what would do they know, anyway?), expected your answer be? The Greatest Showman movie to Something by Michael Jackson, be such a huge success in the UK, Whitney, Oasis, Queen, George where it exceeded its projected Michael or even Take That, perhaps? earnings by more than eight times.

Now, the fourteen songs from the movie soundtrack, are to be reworked featuring some of the biggest names on the contemporary music scene, for a new album entitled The Greatest Showman Reimagined, due out in mid November. Kelly Clarkson, Ty Dollar $ign, Anne-Marie, Kesha, James Arthur, Jess Glynne, Sara Bareilles, Craig David and Pentatonix are among the big names on the disc. Highlights include Kesha and Missy Elliott teaming up with original singer Keala Settle for the Oscar-nominated ‘This is Me’, Panic!

At the Disco taking on the opener, ‘The Greatest Show’, and Craig David singing bonus track ‘Come Alive’. The original Greatest Showman soundtrack, performed by Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and their co-stars has sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide. It’s spent an incredible 21 weeks atop the UK album chart in 2018, and has not dropped out of the top three since January. Hearing that Kelly Clarkson is taking on my favourite song from the movie, ‘Never Enough’, is enough to make my mouth water ….. and reach out for the hankies.

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Torrevieja

Shipmate Bryan Dalton was voted in as the new Standard Bearer for the Royal Naval Association, Torrevieja Branch at their September meeting. His first official engagement with the Standard was for the Royal Air Forces Association Battle Britain service at La Siesta Church on 15th September when he was unfazed by the torrential rain in Torrevieja that morning, kept calm and carried out his duties admirably. Bryan, originally from Lincolnshire, joined the Royal Navy as a boy of 15 starting on HMS St Vincent in Gosport and served for twenty five years before retiring from The Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. A Double Six proves unlucky for El Cid

Sitting top of the league with 2 wins El Cid travelled to Monte Mar hoping to build on their good start to the Winter League. Out of 90 ends El Cid won 50 which should result in a win but dropping a 6 on two tight games proved very costly. Over the 5 Rinks Monte Mar took 3 wins pipping El Cid by 1 shot for shot difference and resulting in a 8-4 defeat. Stars for El Cid were the two all ladies teams of Betty Anderson, Geraldine Scutt, Hazel Brown and Yvonne Briden with a 20-11 win and Ros Dingle, Shirley Payne, Anita Randall and Pat Metcalfe winning 18 – 13. Well done to Monte Mar and

must do better for El Cid. Next week sees El Cid back on the coach to Greenlands. Stewart Beattie AWAY SUCCESS FOR THE SWORDS! Good day for the Swords again on Monday, travelling to Finca Guila and coming away with 8-2 win (80 shots to 47)and a win on the Challenger Rink. In the scoring rinks best result went to Alan Hall, Jim Sissens and Ian Brown romping away to a 31-6 win. Wins also for Betty Anderson, Hazel Brown and Jill Glastonbury 20-14 and John Carr, Clive Bidel and Paul Whitmee 1811. In the last scoring rink Pat Coburn, Paul Trunchion and Alan Ferrand were

all square in to the 16th end, holding 3 to go ahead in the 16th only to see Finca’s Marjorie Parnham fire and take the jack back for 3 shots. No way back sadly and they lost 16-11. Big win for the Challengers, Dave Forret, Stuart Branch (who says this will no doubt surprise and please all his UK Mainland bowling friends!) with Stewart Beattie taking the game 2712. Our Friendly losing out 18-11 on the ever challenging Rink 1! Next weeks match is now on Tuesday afternoon and sees the Swords take on BBC Tigers at El Cid. COME ON THE SWORDS!

Sports & Local News Pego Golf Society pairs competition

If this golf today had been played in Javea, it would have been washed out, but in Oliva Nova there was no rain during the night and early morning, and we had the best conditions possible for out golf tournament. The course is slowly coming back to its best, even though the fairways were very long with the new grass planted, but there are definite signs of improvement, so thank you Oliva Nova. We were delighted to have two guests today, and they were Kevin Newman and Michael Jones, and they were warmly welcomed by our Captain for 2018, namely Mr David Phillips In the competition the winners were as follows:1st Place with 73 Points was Michael Connelly and Celia Cronin. 2nd Place with 73 Points was Malcolm Wise and Peter Cornes (beaten on count back) 3rd Place with 69 Points, was Andrew Harrison and Fiona Sankey 4th Place with 65 Points was Russ Peters and Paul Trigwell Well played to all the winners, especially to Michael and Celia, with a great total today.

Nearest the pin at Hole No 5 with their second shot was Michel Grin with a super shot in, of 1.44 meters, and at Hole 16, the winner was Colin Foster at 2.55 meters. There were three two’s today, and they were by the following:- Andrew Harrison, Colin Foster and Keith Price The “Balls in the Water” prize was guessed today by Keith Price with 87 balls so many congrats to Keith. Finally in the match play semi final, John Guest beat Donna Green 4 and 2, and John Evans beat Brian Barden by 3 and 1. The Captain had a birthday last week, so he presented a bottle of red wine from a card draw to the happy recipient John Nicol. “ Happy Birthday David” The biggest congratulations of the week go to Oliva Nova Golf Course, for getting the course into a good but not perfect shape to play our match on today. Next week, we are playing the Committee Plate, which is one of our major trophies in a Medal Competition, so should you want to join us at Pego, please contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com, and we would love to see you.

How are the Javea Green Squads Faring?

The Winter Bowling Season kicked off on Thursday, 27th September, so how are the 4 Squads at Javea Green getting on? The WINTER LEAGUE have, at the time of writing, played 3 matches and have won all 3 by 9-3 points away to Bonalba, 7-5 points home to Quesada and 8-4 points away to Benitachell Bowls Club (BBC). Their Berleen Team has also won all its matches, 21-13 shots, 26-9 shots and 35-6 shots. This is an excellent start to the Sea-

son and bodes well for the future, so well done to the Winter League players, ably led by Squad Captain, Clive English. They are currently in the top spot on the League Table just ahead of rivals Quesada. The other 3 Squads play in the Northern League. The QUARTZ SQUAD, led by Mike O’Neill, have to date played 4 matches, winning 3 with points of 6-4 away to JG Opal, 6-4 home to El Cid Swords and

7-3 away to BBC Tigers. They lost one by 3-7 points home to fellow JG Squad, Onyx. Their Challenger Team has won 1 and lost 3 of their matches so currently have 2 points to their name. The OPAL SQUAD, with John Coates at the helm, have played 2 matches and had 1 postponement (the rainy season is upon us!). They have lost one by 4-6 points home to JG Quartz and won the other by 6-4 points home to Finca Guila. Their Challenger

Team have also lost one and won one, they also have 2 points in the bag at the moment. Lastly, the ONYX SQUAD, captained by Niel Roake, have played just two matches – losing one 3-7 points home to Bonalba Colts and winning the other by 6-4 points away to JG Quartz, again their Challenger Team have also lost one and won one and have 2 points to their credit. So a mixed bag of results for the Northern League Teams but it is early days yet.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

After what seemed like an eternity the penultimate International Break of 2018 is over and it was back to normal for the Premier League & Alfaz Fantasy Football League at the weekend. On the bright side, England’s performance in Seville was very encouraging and was not the usual insipid display we have had to put up with in the past. There were 9 Premier League matches which supplied the Alfaz Fantasy League with 22 goals, 8 clean sheets, 34 yellow cards and for the third time this Season no red ones. (although I’m sure Burnley’s Manager Sean Dyche won’t be happy!). The 8 clean sheets helped to build the average score up to over 27 points for the week. John’s Wee Aggies remain at the top of the A.F.F.L. with a comfortable 19 point advantage over Simon’s team Si is Norfolk and Good. Linda’s Team Tapas have jumped up 5 places and have joined Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team in 3rd place. Down at the very bottom of the League Mark’s team,

Inter Rubber had another bad week only scoring 8 points courtesy of his 3 Manchester United Players, Pogba, Lukaku and Rashford. Down there with him is his mate’s team Gary’s Upside Team who are just 4 points above. William & Henry, who started the Season off in good style have seized the chance to take over the Summit for the 2nd time this Season of our Junior League by replacing Harley’s Ginger Ninjar who have been at the top for the last 5 weeks. A.j’s team Blue Moon F.C, have been making steady progress and are now in 3rd place after clocking up 47 points this week. At the other end of the table, Fleetwood Gian has been cut adrift of the pack and are now in all kinds of trouble 44 points behind Tom’s Real City. Linda’s Team Tapas joined Jin Dream Team at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies section after leapfrogging Pauline’s Vodka Army who is just 4 points behind in 3rd spot. Two teams are sharing the top spot and the same

situation is at the bottom has Jackie’s Winchester & Kim’s Ginger United are sharing the task of holding the rest of the girls up, both 16 points away from Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans. It was all quiet at the top of our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League with Manchester United keeping this Season’s top scorer Chelsea’s Edin Hazard off the scoresheet in the Red’s thrilling 2-2 all draw at Stamford Bridge. Only Salah & Aguero were on the mark at the weekend, both Players were in the joint Leaders line-ups Big Sam’s Army and Kevin’s Two for the Road who have a fragile 5 point advantage over 2 teams Stephen’s Ortolans & the improving Bill’s team East Fifers. Joanna’s Hugonauts F.C. have dropped into the bottom spot and replaced Liz’s Cookies Crew 61 who are now 4 points above. We have 3 teams going into the Hat for our Monthly Wine draw and they are our top scoring team which was Gil’s Kippax who bagged 55 points,

the other 2 teams who got the lowest score were Mike’s Super Saints and Thrummy’s Cool who only managed 4 points each. Last Month’s winner was Micky’s Simply, Simply, Lovely. There were no changes at the top or bottom of our Champion of Champions League. Jin Dream Team still hold a slight 4 point lead over Pauline’s Vodka Army while in the basement Dave’s team The Hatters are 15 points behind last Season’s Champions Daz XI. Manager of the Month for October is being kindly sponsored by Olga & Marcel at the Trafalgar Restaurant in Alfaz who provide an excellent International Cuisine in pleasant surroundings. With one week to go the League leaders John’s Wee Aggies are favourites to win this fabulous meal for 2 at this very fine Restaurant, At the moment they have a 7 point advantage over Chris’s P.G.Tips. Eric’s Full Metal Jackets are just 1 point behind followed by Team Tapas

& La Catalan who are all in with a chance of winning this excellent prize. Gil’s Kippax has won this weeks Breakfast for 2 sponsored by the Bar Code in Alfaz after moving up 45 places to number 93 in the main League. The Replays which took place in our Weekender Prelimanary K.O.Cup Competition resulted in wins for Des’s Wigan Champs who beat Jordi’s Kasbrane Best 18-12, Laura’s Legends who were last Season’s Wooden Spoon Specialists got rid of Harry’s team Murder on Zidanesfloor by 28-19, Dominic’s Metal Giroud is it scraped through against Janette’s Gerrard’s Bitch by 30-27 and the last team to make was one of our lowest rated teams Luke’s Moffs Magicians who lie in the 207th position who produced a shock result beating 53rd placed Kevin’s One for the Road by 23-15. The Draw for the 1st Round will soon be up on our website which will take place next Month weekend November 10th.

Grateful Garcia

Sergio Garcia capped his superb performance in the Ryder Cup last month, to gain a personal triumph on Monday to win his first tournament of the year. It meant a lot to the Spaniard, as he recorded a dominating four shot victory on home soil at the Valderrama Masters, an event which he has now won for the last three years. The victory made Garcia the first player to win the same European Tour title three times in a row since Er-

nie Els in 2004 when he won a third Heineken Classic in Melbourne. The tournament in Andalucia, which is hosted by Garcia’s charitable foundation, was heavily hit by thunderstorms and had to be completed a day late, even after being reduced to 54 holes. “To be able to win three times here in Valderrama is a dream come true,” he said. “It’s so difficult, this golf course is so challenging.”

Back in business

Just one point separates the top five teams in Preferente Group Four, with four of those sides meeting this weekend, after last week’s fixtures were all postponed. Based on a weather forecast promising severe storms, the Valencian FA took a rational decision to postpone all fixtures in the region, but the frustrating reality was that the weather was

by Alex Trelinski

perfectly fine across a large part of Alicante Province for the matches to have taken place. The pick of the matches this weekend sees the leaders Sant Joan(pictured) travel to Rojales on Sunday morning to take on fifth-placed CD Thader, who are just a point behind, whilst there’s

a derby clash between third and fourth, as Hercules B welcome CFI Alicante. Second-placed CD Almoradi entertain neighbours Benferri CF on Sunday; CD Torrevieja are at home to Aspe in an earlier than normal noon kick-off; there’s a Vega Baja clash between UD Horadada and Orihuela, whilst Villajoyosa CF have a local meeting with Benidorm CD.

for England in 2015 but earns a place amid a back-row injury crisis. Bath’s uncapped wing Joe Cokanasiga, 20, is one

of eight uncapped players in the 36-man squad named by Eddie Jones. Dylan Hartley and Owen Farrell, who led the team this summer in Hartley’s absence, are named as co-captains.

Contrasting fortunes set the stage for this Sunday’s El Clasico match, as Barcelona entertain Real Madrid(kick-off at 4.15 pm). Real languish in an uncharacteristic seventh spot in La Liga, but they are only four points behind leaders and champions, Barcelona. A poor home defeat to Levante last weekend, was then followed by an unconvincing Champions League victory over Pizen on Tuesday night, with all eyes

by Alex Trelinski

on whether Real coach Julen Lopetegui would even be in charge for this Sunday’s match Club director Emilio Butragueno insisted that Lopetegui would indeed be on the bench in Barcelona. “Yes, yes, as normal,” he said when asked about the coach. “We must prepare well for the match. In this type of situation it is important to remain calm and trust

the players.” Barcelona produced the goods big time last Saturday, when they beat title rivals Sevilla fourtwo, to end a four match winless sequence. The victory came at a big price though, as Lionel Messi suffered a fracture in his forearm, which will keep him out of action for around three weeks. Perhaps, that was the kind of break that Real have been in need of?
