WHAT the Spanish Met Office refers to as a “tolvanera” – a form of dust storm – hit the beach market at Guardamar del Segura in the south of the Alicante province last Sunday. Filmed by a bystander in a clip that quickly spread across social networks, you can see stallholders and shoppers look on anxiously as the mini twister approaches the site. As it starts to make contact with the area where the stalls are, it is clear that this is a serious slice

of nature and very soon awnings, clothes and other debris are being blown away while several stalls are blown over before their owners have a chance to dismantle or pin them down. Almost as quickly as it arrived the storm spins away, leaving a trail of chaos behind it. If you want to see the spectacle for yourself have a look at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ TheWeekenderSpain where the video has been shared.

Property vs Investment Portfolios start to become greater. You no longer have the luxury of investing for the long-term. For example, if you’re 80 years old, and invest in property during a property boom, in 2 years time the market may start to dip. The market may recover after 10 years and put you back into high profits. But you may no longer be around to reap the benefits. So essentially, the older you are, the shorter your opportunity becomes for a long-term investment.

By Tracy Storer

Senior Partner Chorus Financial

Investing in property has been popular in past years, with many people buying property to rent out as an investment. The attractions of property are clear. The UK sector has historically delivered a compelling rental yield, combined with an attractive level of capital growth over the long term. However, property is not right for everyone and here I highlight some of the main factors that should be considered.

1)

Age – Once you really start

getting to the later years of life, your risks

purchasing tax is 10%, so essentially you are 10% down from day one, but there are other ongoing taxes to consider. If you have a property you rent out in Spain and live in Spain yourself, you will have to declare the income on your Spanish tax return (declaracion de la renta de las personas fisicas) every year and then of course when you sell the property you will have to consider the possible capital gains tax.

2)

4) Lack of diversification - If Cost - The costs involved in buy- you own your current home, investing in

3)

Tax - You should also ensure you location of the property. Unlike the UK the

to-let can quickly stack up and erode the returns. Buying costs, including legal fees, agency fees and survey fees, all of which are usually paid upfront need to be considered and in Spain this can be somewhere around 15%! Then you will need to find tenants or advertise the property for holiday lets. Then you have the ongoing costs, which could include redecoration and repairs, gas and electrical appliance maintenance, buildings and contents insurance, legal insurance and the costs of complying with the various landlord regulations. have a firm grasp of the tax implications of purchasing a buying property as this will cause a further limit on returns. In Spain the

a second could leave you heavily exposed to the property market. If property prices falter, your wealth could be significantly affected. The property market is also highly illiquid, meaning a property can sit on the market for months, or even years, before a buyer is found. If you need to access your money quickly, you could be forced to accept a lower offer than you could achieve given more time and even then, this could take some time. We should also take into consideration the

rental yields in Spain can be as little as 2-3% gross and if you take into consideration the buying fees, often it can take over 5 years

just to break even! So what if buying a property is not a suitable investment for you? What are the alterative options? Number one, leaving money in your bank can be a bad idea if you want to achieve growth. UK inflation is currently at 3% so unless your bank are paying you 3% interest (which is very unlikely) you savings are depreciating daily. So what about investing? Many people get put off by that word. They think that it is only for the experienced or for big risk takers but it really isn’t. The key to investing is getting the right advice, making sure that all of your needs and objectives are considered and that everything is explained in a simple manner that you understand. At Chorus Financial, we do just that. If a client comes to me and purchasing a property is the right thing for them, I’ll advise them of that – and if it isn’t? I’ll sit down and talk through the various options available, whether they just want to grow their money at the same rate of inflation or they are more aggressive investors looking for bigger growth, we make sure that it is right for them. If you are confused about what investments are right for you, give me a call on 693 107 044 or email t.storer@chorusfinancial.es

volcano “set to erupt any minute” in the Canary Islands. The Daily Mail, Express and Sun all carried 300 recent earthquakes on to a “mega eruption” of the versions of the story which appeared to have its basis on Tenerife which could lead island’s Teide Volcano. David Calvo, from the Canary Island Volcanic Institute, said there were actually 270 very lowmagnitude quakes at the start of May. He went on

to explain “The UK tabloids mixed up a jumble of things. What’s happened was known as a seismic swarm, a concentration of earthquakes in a small period of time which is perfectly normal in a volcanic region like the

Canary Islands.” How the press came to the conclusion these would lead to a volcanic eruption is unclear. The scientific community does not have anyone who thinks the two events are associated with each other according to Mr Calvo, who called it “pseudoscience”. He has been contacted by the press and several embassies for comment and has repeated his assurances, stating his belief that the story was written to sell newspapers and has no factual basis. So the Canary Islands are perfectly safe to visit – just watch out for those killer jellyfish.

Two day ordeal over for pensioner by Simon Russell

AN 80-year-old man spent two days without food or water and unable to move after he fell in his Torrevieja apartment. The emergency services became aware of the incident and a fire crew, ambulance and the Local Police attended the scene on Avenida de las Habaneras. The firemen managed to enter the flat with a long ladder and then removed the man from the building where the medical crew took over. The pensioner was taken to Torrevieja Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

Fewer flights ALICANTE-Elche airport saw a drop in passenger numbers in April, the first such fall in over a year. The figures were not entirely unexpected as Easter, one of the busiest periods for holidays, fell in March this year while in 2017 it was in April. Statistics for

the first four months of 2018 still show a healthy increase in both passenger numbers and flights from previous years. The biggest market by far for the airport remains the UK, around a third of all total flights and travellers in the first four months of the year.

200 in island clean-up ABOUT 200 volunteers took part last Sunday in an exercise to clear rubbish away from Alicante’s Tabarca Island, both on the beaches and in the sea. The Environment Department organised the day and made sure that gloves and refuse bags were provided for everyone, with Environment

Councillor for Alicante Israel Cortes among the participants. The day was part of the “Lets Clean Europe Campaign” which ran last weekend across the continent. In Tabarca, volunteers came from organisations such as Aguas de Alicante and the scouts as well as some local businesses.

Killed in her bed by Matthew Richards

A 50-year-old woman has been murdered in Valencia City while her 54-year-old partner is seriously ill after what appears to be a killing carried out by the woman’s son. The tragedy happened in the early hours of last Sunday morning in the quiet Benimamet district, with the emergency services being contacted by the victim’s other son. The mother was stabbed in her back when she slept and her partner’s throat was slashed while the suspected perpetrator also stabbed himself in the neck in what looks to be an attempted suicide. The 25-yearold has been arrested and is being treated for his wounds.

Kidnappers nabbed TWO Italian men have been arrested in the Valencian town of Canals charged with kidnapping and various other crimes related to drug trafficking activities. The matter came to the attention of

the Guardia Civil after a Bolivian man said he had been kidnapped then kept bound and gagged in a property in Canals. The Guardia searched

the house and another in Torrella and found firearms, a substantial amount of ammunition, other weaponry, cocaine, hashish, marijuana and equipment used to prepare the drugs for sale. Two

Italian nationals aged 35 and 52 have been arrested and charged with illegal detention of an individual, crimes against public health, illegal possession of weapons, robbery with violence and death threats.

Forced into prostitution TWO Nigerian women have been freed from a property in Alicante where they were being forced to have paid sex against their will; four people have been arrested on charges of sexual exploitation. The pair had been shipped over from Nigeria after being deceived into thinking

by Simon Russell

they were coming to Europe for legitimate work. Once here they were immediately forced into prostitution and to have sex with the gang’s ringleader. Both had undergone abortions, at least five for one of the women.

They had also incurred a “debt” of €35,000 for their transportation and other costs while the police heard how methods such as voodoo had been used to keep the young women, from uneducated rural backgrounds, compliant. Computers, PC software, mobile phones,

documentation and cash were all seized in the property where the women were being held. Two of the alleged perpetrators were arrested in Benidorm, one in Palma de Mallorca and one in Pamplona in Northern Spain in what has been a lengthy operation by the National Police.

Net could be closing on dog poisoners AS part of their investigation into the recent spate of dog poisonings in the Benissa area, Seprona agents are looking at various items in the possession of six local

hunters. Possibly most significantly could be unauthorised insecticides which have been described as highly toxic, with a tiny amount being sufficient to kill a

dog. The materials recovered were in sheds used by the hunters, three in Benissa and one in Teulada. Nine dogs died and five were seriously ill in the incidents

earlier this year in what was believed to be a deliberate act. Samples have been taken from the dead pets and will be compared with the toxins found this week. Seprona, the

animal protection arm of the Guardia Civil, also found illegal traps in the sheds while around 50 hunting dogs owned by the group were not properly registered or vaccinated.

Hardliner takes Saving the over in Catalonia Salinas UNSETTLED Catalonia has elected Joaquim Torra as its new leader, meaning that the region will end its period of being ruled by Madrid following their illegal independence bid. A pact of pro-independence parties put their differences aside to elect Mr Torra, a fierce supporter of a separate Catalan state. The move means that day to day politics can resume in the area such as the badly delayed budget. However Mr Torra is seen by some as a controversial figure, with sections of the Spanish press describing him as xenophobic and even a fascist. His dislike

by Simon Russell

for Spaniards from outside of Catalonia as well as nonCatalans living there is well documented, something only matched by his dislike of Catalans who do not want independence. Mr Torra has promised to work as closely as he can with Carles Puigdemont, who is currently in Germany awaiting a court’s decision on his extradition to Spain, where he faces charges of sedition if he returns. Mr Torra has also indicated he will step aside from his role if Mr Puigdemont is allowed to resume as leader of the region in some capacity.

SANTA Pola has introduced more stringent rules on planning and building designed to better protect the Salinas de Santa Pola saltwater lakes. The area will effectively be outside of any urban building plans to ensure their continued conservation for a range of 500 to 1,000 metres from the shore. It

is important to preserve the special soil, wetlands, quality of the water and other delicate balances that allow the unique mix of flora and fauna that flourish there said the Consell. They were backed by groups such as Alicante Friends of the Wetlands and the Department of Sustainability.

Public to decide on dog beaches TORREVIEJA has confirmed that there will be a public referendum on the location of the proposed new beaches for dogs. This will coincide with the municipal elections in May 2019 and in the meantime two provisional areas have been confirmed for this year. They are Cala del Moro (by the Cabo Cervera Park) and Punta Margalla, near Playa del Cura. These should be

ready in time for the peak summer months, with signs and other preparation taking about two months to complete. Councillor Javier Manzanares said that the beaches chosen are ideal as they will not have to be fenced off or interfere with swimmers on other beaches. These areas will also act as a pilot so lessons can be learned for when the final locations are chosen next year.

More jellyfish Sting in the tail cause beach closures for beekeepers

Another plague of the dangerous Portuguese Carabela jellyfish forced authorities in Alicante to ban swimming off the beaches of San Juan, El Campello and Cabo de La Huertas, close to Alicante, earlier this week. Around twelve sightings of the large sea creatures, some reportedly appearing like big sheets of paper, were recorded over last weekend, in weather conditions similar to those of previous beach closures last month. With no lifeguards in attendance until the end of may, local police were issued with the authority to raise the red flags and

by Andy Mansall

clear the sea of bathers. Stings from the venomous jellyfish, commonly known as Portuguese man o war, can cause severe pain, skin welts and in extreme cases anaphylactic shock to their victims. Strong winds blowing in an Easterly direction have swept the creatures, from their normal deep water habitat into shallow coastal waters. Juan Guillen, a researcher at the Institute of Ecology explained that Storm Gisele in the Atlantic ocean during mid march, “led to a larger than normal mass

of water entering through the Straits of Gibraltar, bringing an influx of jellyfish onwards in a Northerly flow up the mediterranean coast of Spain”. North Easterly winds at the end of April stopped them in the Bay of Altea, causing them to drift onto beaches from Altea, south to Benidorm, san Juan and beyond to La Manga in Murcia. An easterly breeze drove them back out to sea earlier this month, but a change back to westerlies, brought them back, causing the current problems. Although the researcher sees little chance of the situation continuing, the volatility of weather conditions, which are forecast to remain unsettled until mid june, means he cannot rule out more problems arising. “Numbers are receding and it would be extraordinary if another large mass of water from The Azores or Madeira entered the mediterranean again, but we cannot discard the idea”, he said.

SPAIN has more bees and beekeepers than any other European Union country, but the trade is being hit by an increasing number of thefts. There are an estimated 25,000 beekeepers and 2.5 million hives in the country but theft of entire colonies is not uncommon. A spokesman for the Valencian beekeeper community said that almost a thousand hives have been stolen in the region so far this year, while until recently theft would account for just a few each year. He tells the tale of a young man in the region who started out

by Matthew Richards

with seven hives and a year later had 600 – an almost impossible feat without resorting to stealing. Often all a thief has to do is locate the queen bee, relocate it, and the rest of the colony will shortly follow. More worryingly an estimated 90% of thefts come from existing beekeepers, something that is creating a spiral of crime between competitors. Stolen hives are readily available on the internet, far more viable than the traditional method of renting them to boost

production. The police help where they can but many legitimate beekeepers are resorting to cameras, alarms, traps and even GPS systems hidden in the combs. However it is difficult to make the outdoors theft proof and also to later prove a hive – let alone a swarm of bees – is your property. Nestor Pascual, a third generation apiarist aged 67, says he has been robbed five times already this year and while he knows his hives and bees are on a rivals land there seems little action the authorities can take.

RUBBER CHEQUE A Senegalese man who tried to cash a fake cheque for nearly three quarters of a million euros has been sentenced to 15 months in jail by an Alicante court. Bankia’s head office in Madrid had received a cheque for $815,000 (about €750,000) from a bank in the USA, payable to the defendant. However

the document was an elaborate forgery and the defendant was caught after he tried to cash it into his Alicante Bankia account. He also used a false driving licence as part of the attempted fraud. A friend of his who had also been on trial was acquitted of all charges.

Helping single parents SINGLE parent families are set to join the list of exclusions from the co-pay system for prescription medicines across the Valencian Community. It is hoped that the new move will be brought in before the end of the summer and will help ease the economic situation for one of

the most vulnerable sectors of society, said President Ximo Puig. They join u n e m p l o y e d Valencianos, most of who became exempt for payments from 1 May. Mr Puig said that these measures “break another wall when it comes to inequality and access to affordable health care”.

Sniffer dogs earning their keep ALICANTE’S Canine Unit had another good result last Sunday when sniffer dogs detected 21 kilos of hashish at Alicante Bus Station. Most of this was being carried by a 17-year-old Moroccan boy while a kilo was found in the bags of a 50-year-old woman, also Moroccan. The main haul was concealed in six wrapped packages, but these were still easily detected by the police dogs which stand by a case when they

ELDERLY FONDLER DETAINED A man in his sixties who fondled the breasts of a barmaid half his age in Valencia has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse. The incident happened when the 29-year-old came out from behind the bar to change TV channels. The man walked up behind her and grabbed her, asking her to touch him saying “you will like it.” The young woman clearly didn’t think so, and escaped from his grasp then called the police. The man left the bar, but the National Police tracked him down in another establishment about three hours later. The detainee has an existing criminal record and is due to appear in court this week.

Guardia attacked by mob NINE off duty Guardia Civil officers were attacked by a group of around forty people after they left a restaurant in Algeciras, on the Bay of Gibraltar. The attackers were waiting for the agents in the car-park of the restaurant

in the El Rinconcillo neighbourhood, most armed with baseball bats, broken bottles or other crude weapons. The Guardia party received several kicks and blows before one was able to fire his service pistol in the air, causing the

perpetrators to disperse. Early reports are that the attackers were part of a Communion party who had been celebrating nearby and became aware of the presence of the off duty guardsmen. However other reports say

that the incident may be drug related and are part of the pattern of increasing attacks on the authorities in the area, which has become a hub for drug trafficking. To date only one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Back In MOT TEST CHANGES

12

FRIDAY 18TH MAY 2018

From 20 May 2018 the MOT test is becoming stricter in a number of areas. The changes are being brought in to adhere to a European Union directive called the EU Roadworthiness Package. Tighter scrutiny of diesel cars’ exhaust emissions and a check of their diesel particulate filters (DPFs) could cause more diesels to fail their MOT tests and land owners with costly repair bills. Other changes include renaming of the pass and fail categories to make them easier to understand.

How is the MOT test for diesel cars changing? The most significant area for diesel car owners is stricter rules on the permissible level of emissions of cars fitted with a DPF. If a car’s exhaust emits visible smoke of any colour, it will fail the MOT test. Testers are also required to check if diesel cars’ DPFs have been tampered with or removed. If there are visible signs of this, the tester must refuse to test the car unless the owner can provide a legitimate reason for it having been removed, such

Drivers can now get a free annual text message or email four weeks before their car’s MOT is due. The service is free and simple to apply for online and was developed after feedback from drivers. Research revealed that around threequarters of the motorists who were late for their MOT had actually forgotten the date.

MAXIMUM STAKE

ON FIXED ODDS GAMBLING MACHINES

CUT TO £2

The UK government has today (Thursday) confirmed that the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) will be cut to £2 (€2.29/$2.71), with Remote Gaming Duty raised to fill the resulting hole in the pubic finances. The government has not revealed what level it plans to raise the online tax to at this November’s Budget, but an increase to 20% from the current 15% would appear to be the minimum, and it may opt for parity with the existing Machine Gaming Duty of 25%. Campaign groups have long been pushing for changes in regulation for FOBTs, which currently allow punters to wager up to £100 per spin. In March, the UK Gambling published (UKGC) Commission rt the suppo to s ation mend recom government with its review of FOBTs, including limiting stakes on slot games to £2 and non-slot games to £30.

Despite warnings from a number r gambling operators that such majo of changes would lead to significant job losses across the industry, Tracey Crouch, Minister for Sport and Civil Society, said that new rules will now be put in place. “Problem gambling can devastate and families lives, individuals’ take we that right is It s. unitie comm decisive action now to ensure a responsible gambling industry that protects the most vulnerable in our society,” Crouch said in a statement. “By reducing FOBT stakes to £2 we can help stop extreme losses by those who can least afford it. “While we want a healthy gambling industry that contributes to the economy, we also need one that does all it can to protect players.

A special arrangement for Northern Ireland?

The negotiations on Brexit continue and are intensifying. Northern Ireland has found itself at the heart of these discussions. The EU-UK Joint Report of December 2017 gave further endorsement to the notion that there are unique circumstances that demand specific solutions. This appears not to be contested; it is the method of respecting the concept that is subject to ongoing debate. The draft Withdrawal Agreement took this one step further, by turning political agreement into a legal text. As things nudge forward, elements of this legal text have secured agreement (indicated via colour coding). The Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland (the ‘backstop option’ or Option C) is intended as a solution if the other options fail. The reaction it received in parts of the UK is a cause for concern; in our view, it simply gave legal meaning to what many felt had already been agreed. This becomes even more troubling as Options A (a future EU-UK relationship that would be able to address the challenge of the Irish border) and B (‘specific’ technological solutions) are thus far failing to materialise. We are concerned that the debate in the UK is still not displaying adequate recognition of some basic facts about the current situation. First, Northern Ireland already enjoys a form of special constitutional status. This is evident in the Good Friday Agreement, and subsequent agreements, as well as in the legal content and significance of the Northern Ireland Act 1998. So, the conversation around Brexit is essentially about maintaining and stabilising Northern Ireland’s existing circumstances in this novel environment. It is a place that ‘diverges’ from the UK (and Ireland) in significant respects. Moreover, it is one of the two UK constituent parts that voted to remain. Second, it was recognised early in the process that any obstacle to the free exercise of the right of secession (that Northern Ireland already possesses) needed to be faced. Creating a bespoke solution that ensures alignment with the EU is simply a way of not undermining this existing right. Third, the invisibility of the border will

Tel: 671 935 072

depend on keeping the island, as far as is possible, as a single economic unit where people and goods can move freely. Proposals for developing a ‘common regulatory space’ are essentially again an attempt to conserve the benefits of what happens now. Fourth, territorial/geographical exceptions do exist already within the EU and there are many examples where constitutional complexity is recognised, including in cases that are linked with the UK, for example, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands. This makes the argument for a differentiated approach with regard to Brexit plausible and the objective a reasonable one in these negotiations. Fifth, and finally, we acknowledge and accept that East-West cooperation will have to be enhanced. Here again, however, there is an available solution (in addition to the mechanisms to be agreed as part of the Withdrawal Agreement). The Good Friday Agreement, in its principles and its institutions, is the obvious vehicle to take forward the bi-lateral collaboration that will be required. The British-Irish Council and the BritishIrish Intergovernmental Conference, for example, provide an existing framework for nurturing the British-Irish ‘special relationship’. They might also offer a space for the UK, and its constituent parts, to remain engaged with developments within the EU. We believe that formal recognition of the particular circumstances of Northern Ireland is vital to securing the objectives being sought as the UK negotiates its orderly withdrawal from the EU. A special arrangement/status is in keeping with a more pluralistic understanding of the UK’s constitution, would be respectful of the Good Friday Agreement and the peace process, and is possible within the contours of the EU’s own legal/political order.

Japanese investors buy record amount of Spanish bonds in March Japanese investors bought a record 282.1 billion yen (1.9 billion pounds) of Spanish bonds in March, Japanese government data showed on Thursday, highlighting increased foreign demand for euro zone debt. Net Japanese buying of Spanish bonds surpassed a previous record of 199.7 billion yen marked in October 2005, the data showed. Overall, the data reflected continued buying of euro zone bonds, with 901.8 billion yen worth of euro-denominated bonds purchased in March. Japanese bond investors have forayed abroad in increasing numbers in recent years as the Bank of Japan’s aggressive monetary easing keeps domestic bond yields at record lows . Yet most Japanese institutional investors want to avoid being exposed to currency market fluctuations and typically have currency

hedging on a large part of their foreign bond portfolio. The cost for dollar hedging, which is closely tied to dollar interest rates, has been steadily rising since 2014. The rise accelerated last year as investors priced in faster rate increases by the U.S. Federal Reserve, in turn encouraging foreign investors into euro zone bond markets. Analysts say this development, in particular, has boosted demand for peripheral government bonds - coinciding with ratings upgrades and brighter growth prospects. Spain’s 10-year bond yield gap over Germany is at 75 basis points, compared with 115 bps at the end of last year ES10YT=RR DE10YT=RR. “Increased appetite for Spanish bonds shows there’s now a de-correlation of peripheral government bonds from risk assets,”

said Lyn Graham-Taylor, a rates strategist at Rabobank in London. “Investors are loving the carry story.” Another strategist, who asked not be named, said he suspected that ratings upgrades for Spain may also have encouraged Japanese buying of Spanish bonds. S&P Global in March raised Spain’s credit rating to A- from BBB+, citing a positive outlook for the economy and budgetary consolidation, marking the second ratings upgrade of the year. French bonds, historically a favourite among Japanese investors, are offering a limited yield pick-up, so a diversification into peripheral bonds by foreign investors can be expected, analysts added. Japanese investors sold French bonds in March, the data showed.

Business & Finance

BLACKTOWER Financial Management

When I think about what’s important in my business, it´s all about getting to the heart of the most important issues and understanding what concerns you most, be it now or in the future. To do this it’s important to ask the right questions, both of yourself and your Financial Adviser. Here’s my list of the top 20, there are lots more I am sure, but at least these are some to start with: 1. Do you know your income after tax per year and what you spend and save? (if anything) 2. What is your current net worth? (Liquid and illiquid assets) 3. If you have debts what are they, what interest rate are you paying and are there ways you can borrow more efficiently? 4. Will you have/or do you have enough funds to retire when you want to with the standard of living you want? 5. Is there anything you want to do / accomplish in your life?

20 questions you should ask when taking financial advice. 6. Do you have a contingency fund? 7. If anything happens to you will your family know what to do, do they have a copy of your will, a list of key contacts, details of bank accounts , investments pensions etc etc? 8. What about IHT in the UK and the country you are tax resident in, do you know what you or your beneficiaries are liable to pay in each country? 9. Do you have a current Will? 10. Are the people named as beneficiaries in your Will still the ones you want? 11. Do you want to name beneficiaries under your investments, these can be different to your beneficiaries in your Will? 12. Is there a legitimate way to reduce your income tax and or IHT liabilities? 13. What is your risk tolerance, how much risk are you taking right now? Risk is not your enemy it can be beneficial to you but it needs to be managed as much as possible. 14. What is your current asset allocation, with all the things you own? 15. With regards to investments, be that

financial or property what has been your rate of return over the years? This is easier for financial investments but with a house e.g. taking into consideration all expenses not just appreciation of the value of a property, improvements, mortgage repayments, insurance payments, taxes etc. 16. If you´re under State retirement age what State pension will you be entitled to and when, can you pay extra to top it up and receive more, is that worthwhile doing? 17. If you have children/grandchildren would you like, when they are older, to be able to help them with university costs or give them money towards a car or a house deposit? A savings plan could help. 18. If you have investments and or private pensions do you understand them and how they work? 19. Have you provisions in place if you need care when you get older so as not to burden your family? 20. Do want a stress free retirement knowing your financial affairs are in order?

The Blues Brothers & Sister Act Prove “It’s not just a Show but a Party” for the Teulada – Moraira Lions

Two great shows on Sunday the 13th May in Espai La Senieta featuring The Blues Brothers Experience and Sister Act – are you ready for a Miracle - had the audience enthralled and in real party mood. The girls opened the shows with their tribute to the Sister Act films and what an opening it was. Great songs and great dance routines with lovely vocal harmonies

had the crowds singing and dancing from the first number. Just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it did! With Jake and Elwood singing and dancing their socks off in the inimitable style of The Blues Brothers. What a show, what a party, with some members of the audience joining in on stage and everyone singing and dancing all through the performance.

A fitting end to a great series of shows staged by the TM Lions this Spring. Fatal distractions

Guardia officer among weekend death toll A 28-year-old Castellon Guardia Civil officer was killed on his motorcycle last Sunday. The young man was involved in a traffic accident in the province, near the town of Culla. The officer was born in Granada but had

been serving with the Guardia in Castellon and was the father of a baby girl born just two weeks ago. Across Spain there were five motorcyclists killed last weekend in separate incidents across the country.

Soldier dies on manoeuver THE Spanish army have confirmed that a soldier died while participating in training manoeuvres in Alicante province this week. Eduardo Garcia Molinero was run over by an armoured vehicle at the exercise near Agost and died at the scene. Legionary Molinero

served with the Third Gran Capitan I division based in Melilla and whose spokesman broke the news. The exercises were suspended as a mark of respect and the army passed on its greatest condolences to the soldier’s family, friends and colleagues,

ACCORDING to the latest figures, 41% of fatal traffic accidents in the Valencian Community are caused by distracted drivers. Government delegates presented these statistics at the opening of this week’s conference aimed at promoting better awareness of distractions at the wheel. The most common were listed as mobile phones (reading, talking, texting, answering, searching for it when it rings), map reading,

dealing with children and viewing GPS systems. Expelling insects, lighting cigarettes and adjusting the radio are also believed to have caused fatal crashes across Valencia recently. Someone dialling out on a mobile phone travels the equivalent of four football pitches without looking properly at the road said the report. There is a need for more education on this issue, concluded the findings, as well as firmer and increased policing.

Edmund claims straight sets victory over Pouille, defending champion Zverev next Kyle Edmund continued his dominant run during the clay court season as he beat the No.16 seed Lucas Pouille in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tournament in Rome. Edmund had outlasted Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri in the previous round, where he was not truly feeling comfortable with the change of conditions, but he certainly reacted perfectly with today’s performance. Edmund was much the better player for large portions of the first set as he bludgeoned Pouille with his fearsome forehand and did a fantastic job of really spreading the court, keeping Pouille on the move point after point. The Frenchman grew very frustrated as he constantly found himself on the defence chasing down the high quality forehands

from the Brit in the first set, where Edmund dropped just the two games in taking the set. Pouille is capable of playing at a Top 20-standard and has some impressive scalps to his name in his rise to the Top 20 and he showed all of his qualities in the second set to really give the in-form British No.1 something to think about. The second set was mostly very high quality, but you always had a slight feeling that the recent big-match wins and the 2018 form of Edmund would help him along the way when the match got very tight. Edmund opened up a bit of a lead in the second set tiebreak and never looked back as he claimed yet another impressive victory during what looks to be a very successful clay court swing.

Jo Konta suffers birthday defeat

Johanna Konta saw her hopes of a maiden clay court title ended after a thirdround exit to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko at the Italian Open. Konta, world No 22, was aiming for a third consecutive victory in a tournament for the first time this season but lost 2-6 6-3 6-4 against the world No 6 in two hours and 17 minutes. Ostapenko, who is preparing for the defence of her French Open title at Roland Garros, recovered from a slow start to record a first victory over the British No 1. onta broke Ostapenko’s opening service game

before a further break in the fifth game saw her take the initiative in proceedings. Ostapenko wasted two break point opportunities in Konta’s first service game of the second set but converted the first of three further opportunities in the next service game to earn a first break of the match - which proved enough to force a third set. The 20-year-old Latvian maintained her momentum at the start of the decider to break her opponent once again and had three break points in the third game to increase her control, but Konta showed good resistance to hold serve.

Allardyce sacked at Everton Moyes leaves West Ham

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sam Allardyce was sacked as manager of Everton on Wednesday after just six months in charge despite guiding the Premier League club away from relegation danger to a mid-table finish. The former England manager, 63, was brought in as Ronald Koeman’s replacement in November, but his rudimentary style of play has proved deeply unpopular with fans of the Merseyside club. “We have made the decision that, as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer,” said new chief executive Denise BarrettBaxendale. “On behalf of the chairman, board of directors and Mr Moshiri, I’d like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton.” “Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that,” she added. Former Watford and Hull City manager Marco Silva is the favourite to take over and could complete the move to Goodison Park six months after the club failed to prise him away from Vicarage Road. Despite signing an 18-month deal, Allardyce appeared resigned to his fate after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at former club West Ham, during which Everton supporters called for his sacking. “I can’t

quite say confident after all the rumours I’m reading in the paper,” said Allardyce, when questioned about his future. “Generally there’s no smoke without fire. We’ll wait and see when we meet up.” David Moyes has left West Ham following the end of his short-term contract, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday. The 55-year-old former Everton and Manchester United boss arrived at the London Stadium in November, with the sole objective of ensuring the Hammers’ top-flight status, which he achieved. “I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League,” said joint chairman David Sullivan. “When David and his team arrived, it was the wish of both parties that the focus be only on the six months until the end of the season, at which point a decision would be made with regards to the future,” he added. “Having taken stock of the situation and reflected now the campaign is complete, we feel that it is right to move in a different direction.” Sullivan said the club, who finished 13th in the Premier League, aim to appoint a “high-calibre” successor within the next 10 days. The announcement on Moyes came

barely 12 hours after David Gold, West Ham’s co-owner, said he hoped Moyes would remain in charge for next season. Reports this week said West Ham had held “productive” talks with Paulo Fonseca, the manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, while Sullivan remains a long-term admirer of Newcastle’s Rafael Benitez. Former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, currently with Hebei China Fortune, and outgoing Paris St-Germain coach Unai Emery have also been linked with the role. Moyes succeeded Slaven Bilic in November, when West Ham were in the relegation zone, and guided the team to safety.

England World Cup-winner Ray Wilson dies at 83 Ray Wilson, a fixture at leftback in the England team who won the 1966 World Cup, has died at 83. Wilson won 63 caps and made 283 appearances for Huddersfield Town between 1952 and 1964, before a fiveyear spell with Everton, with whom he won the FA Cup. A statement from Huddersfield said: “Ray is arguably the most successful and best-known player ever to pull on a Huddersfield Town shirt. Until very recently, he was a regular supporter of the Terriers at home match days alongside his eldest son Russell despite battling Alzheimer’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2004. “The thoughts of everyone at Huddersfield Town are with Ray’s

wife Pat, his sons Russ and Neil and the rest of his family and friends at this difficult time.” Wilson was born in Shirebrook on 17 December 1934, and was given the name Ramon, in tribute to Mexican Hollywood actor Ramon Novarro. He joined Huddersfield at the age of 17 in 1952, having previously worked on the railways. Wilson played in a forward role and in central defence before trying his hand at leftback, where he was advised to remain by reserve-team coach Bill Shankly. It was when Liverpool’s legendary manager took charge of the first team in 1956 that the defender’s career flourished. Wilson went on to win the first of his 63 England caps in 1960 when

he featured in the 1-1 draw against Scotland. He remains the last Terrier to play at a World Cup while at the club, having played at the 1962 tournament. After 283 appearances Wilson joined Everton in 1964. Silverware came in a memorable 1966 when Wilson helped the Toffees beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in the FA Cup final before helping England to World Cup success a few weeks later. The defender played 154 matches for the Merseyside club before joining Oldham in 1969. He finished his career in 1971 at Bradford, a team he also managed for just 10 games. Wilson, who went on to open an undertaker business in Huddersfield, was appointed an MBE in 2000.

HART-BREAK JOE HART AMONG PLAYERS SNUBBED IN SOUTHGATES WORLD CUP SQUAD

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia with Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart the most notable omission. Hart played in nine of England’s ten qualifying games as they easily topped a Group F containing Scotland, Slovakia and Slovenia. The 31-year-old was left out of the final game, a 1-0 win over Lithuania, but was widely expected to at least retain his squad place for the finals. Stoke City’s Jack Butland, who started that final game, has been selected alongside Jordan Pickford of Everton and uncapped Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope between the sticks. Three members of the Premier Leaguewinning Manchester City defence – Fabian Delph, John Stones and Kyle Walker – have been selected along with Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jack Wilshere has been omitted in midfield in spite of earning his place back in the Arsenal starting 11, while ex-Ireland under-21 defender Michael Keane of Everton is also left out. Once-capped Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook is on the standby list should injury force changes in the main 23, as is Burnley defender James Tarkowski.
