Finance Feature provided by...

Some important dates for your diary With “The Finance Tour’ returning to Spain for the third time this October, I wanted to encourage any of my regular readers who are considering pension or investment advice here in Spain, to do their best to attend. The Finance Tour is a unique event here in Spain, as it brings 3 heavyweights of the investment and pension world, to venues local to us here on the Costa Blanca. It seems every week there is some finance related event to attend here in Spain, but these tend to involve local companies or offshore fundhouses, who are often tied to a financial advisory. The Finance Tour is Spain’s only truly independent finance and pensions seminar and it brings 2 FTSE listed investment companies – The Prudential and Rathbones, along with a one of the UK’s oldest private pension trustees, James Hay Partnership, to your doorstep. You will have all heard of

The Prudential, a company with over 25 million clients Worldwide and a track record that dates back over 170 years. Rathbones are also a house-hold name in investing, established in 1742, and recognised as one of the World’s leading investment management companies.

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial As before, Chorus are very honoured to have been invited to attend. One thing to emphasise, is that The Finance Tour is NOT a financial sales seminar. Chorus will be there purely to explain how the financial advice process works in conjunction with product providers and fund managers, and how this helps to create a tailored financial solution for you. We are very much behind the ethos of The Finance Tour – and that is to educate and inform, rather than take a sales based approach to these events. You’ll leave these events armed with knowledge that will help you make informed decisions should you ultimately decide to seek financial advice here in Spain. The events are free to attend but places are limited. For information and bookings please visit www. thefinancetour.com or call 693 107 044.

Cyclone batters Valencia Cyclone Leslie in Castellón

by Simon Russell

CYCLONE Leslie, which injured 27 people in Portugal last week, also hit northern Valencia, landing at Alcala de Xivert in Castellon province. 70 litres of rain per square meter fell, most of it in just one hour causing floods and chaos to local municipalities. Slightly further south a tree was blown over in Valencia City, damaging several cars but fortunately not injuring anyone. Across the capital,

fire crews were kept busy as debris and items such as bins were blown around and several buildings reported flooding. Alicante was also affected although the further south the storm hit the more local the conditions were, with many areas escaping the storm altogether. Cyclones are not supposed to hit this part of the world but Leslie resulted in 300,000 people in Portugal losing power.

In the capital, Lisbon citizens were advised to stay indoors and to “avoid walking the streets at all costs” during the height of the storm which brought winds of 160 kmph. Tropical storm Vince was the last to hit the Iberian Peninsula in 2005, but before that the last one reported was way back in 1842. Warmer than average sea temperatures are being blamed, most likely as a result of climate change.

BUDGET PLANS

INCREASES in the national minimum wage; better protection for tenants; and a hike in diesel fuel prices have all been agreed by the minority PSOE government, and the leftwing Podemos party as part of the 2019 state budget. The votes of Podemos in Congress are vital for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to continue governing, and both parties have reached

compromises on next year’s budget. Unlike the previous Partido Popular administration, which planned to increase the minimum wage for a fulltime 40-hour week to 850 euros a month by 2020, Pedro Sanchez and his Podemos counterpart, Pablo Iglesias, have agreed

to a rise to 900 from the start of next year. Landlords will not be able to charge more than two months’ rent up front as a deposit, and local councils will have the power to order them to slash rents that are considered as too high. Income tax levels are to rise for those earning 130 thousand euros and over, whilst taxes on diesel

QUESTIONS are being asked about how the body of a middle-aged woman was able to lie in her flat, in a busy apartment block, for eight years without anyone suspecting anything untoward. Identified as Nadeja, a Spanish national of Ukrainian origin, her mummified corpse was discovered in Vitoria this week. There are twelve apartments in the block where she was found and the neighbours say they all know each other well but the deceased had always kept herself to herself. The police became involved when they received a letter from Ukraine from someone claiming to be the dead woman’s brother, concerned that he could not trace her. An officer crosschecked her name with their records and found that someone with the same name in Vitoria had had their utilities cut off several years ago. They also owed community charges and other town taxes but apparently still lived at the same

address. The police spoke to neighbours who said that a few years ago there had been a bad smell and signs such as uncollected mail but no-one had thought to look into the matter. Her Peugeot was still parked in the communal garage, gathering dust and by this time the police feared the worst; they broke into the apartment and found Nadeja’s body in the flat, lying on her bed. Amazingly the 59-year-old has two daughters in Spain but when they were contacted by the press they refused to speak to them. To further muddy the waters there is no record of her having a brother in Ukraine, leading the police to wonder who alerted them to the matter. Early reports are that Nadeja died in 2010, probably from natural causes. However, the lack of interest in the woman’s welfare from both neighbours and family have raised issues about modern Spain and it’s attitude to people living on their own.

Flood risks across the Community a concern

OVER 10% of the population of the Valencian Community is judged to be at risk from flooding, about 600,000 people. The recent flood tragedy in Mallorca, geographically just a stones throw away, has highlighted the dangers this area faces. The report states that there is a combination of avoidable human factors, including the often illegal building of homes close to floodplains, rivers or barrancs not being

by Matthew Richards

cleared by councils and loss of forestry. Municipalities judged as at high risk include Alaquas, Alboraia, Alfas del Pi, Ontinyent and Picanya which all exceed 4 on a scale of 1 to 6 used by Patricova, the body in charge of the Communities flood planning. Many experts are already blaming the Mallorcan disaster on over-building and the pressure this places on the

Bullying hotline set to open SOCIAL media is often cited as one of the main problems regarding childhood bullying, but police in Valencia are hoping to use the medium to tackle the growing problem. Castellon council are piloting a WhatsApp programme called Comunic@Jove which will be a direct channel between school children and the Local Police. The scheme was introduced this week with a presentation at La Plana secondary school by the cities Security Councillor and three members of the local police force.

by Simon Russell

The new scheme will initially be aimed at the 12 to 15 age group and will provide information on police campaigns, advice for this age group and useful information on subjects such as transport while also allowing the innovative option of direct communication. This is aimed in particular at helping with issues around gender violence, discrimination and general harassment. The project will be presented to six further secondary schools

land itself. Although the risks are seen as high only 25 out of 136 Valencian municipalities have adequate flood risk plans in place said the report. In 1957 almost a hundred people died in massive floods in Valencia City while there are flood deaths across the Community almost every year. Many scientists also believe that global warming will bring heavier rain to the area, something that many towns are starting to experience already.

in the city shortly which will then make up the initial pilot group. It is expected to be rolled out to all schools after the trial has finished and any necessary changes made. Security Councillor Antonio Lorenzo who has been chairing the presentations said “this is a pioneering initiative to bring the public service provided by the Local Police to youngsters so that they can think of the agents as allies. This direct channel of communication should become a fundamental tool for preventing bullying.”

Brave guard took a beating THERE has been a successful conclusion to a police investigation into the beating of a security guard who was trying to stop thieves at the industrial warehouse he was patrolling in Alicante. He came across three men stealing copper and held onto one while contacting the police. His two accomplices

started beating the guard with sticks, something which only stopped when the police arrived and the pair escaped. The man had managed to hold onto the third thief who was arrested while the guard’s injuries required hospital treatment.

The police later found the abandoned car that the other thieves had fled in and opened an investigation into the incident. This week two men were arrested in connection with the attempted theft and assault, with all the perpetrators being described by the police as habitual criminals.

Tributes pour in for murdered officer

by Simon Russell

PATIENTS in public hospitals across the Valencia region will be able to watch television free of charge from February. Valencia’s health minister, Ana Barceló says that a new phone, internet, and television contract due to kick in during February will mean that patients will no long longer have to pay an average of four years a day to watch the tv. The health ministry is also looking at providing free internet access to patients, though some kind of restriction will have to be imposed to make sure connectivity remains uninterrupted for hospital staff. The opposition Partido Popular has demanded that free internet is provided as a “basic right”.

PRIME Minister Pedro Sanchez was among the people offering their condolences after the murder of a Guardia Civil officer in Granada. The agent, named as Jose Manuel Arcos, was on patrol in the city with a trainee last weekend when he stopped a man who he knew to have a history of trouble. The man became aggressive and a tussle broke out during which a shot was fired and the killer fled. It transpired the agent had been shot in the stomach with his own pistol which the suspect still had with him when he left the scene. Mr Arcos was taken to the Hospital de la Salud but died while he was being operated on, with the surgeon saying nothing further could have been done. A rucksack was found at the crime scene, believed to be dropped by the suspect and which contained a loaded sub-machine gun. A massive man hunt commenced

by Simon Russell

finding the killer and a few hours after the shooting a 40-year-old local man was arrested. Officer Arcos was aged 48 and married with two children. A minutes silence was held in many parts of the city as a tribute to the fallen agent whose funeral was held on Tuesday when a posthumous bravery medal was awarded to his widow.

Police retirement worries

THERE are concerns that the already stretched Valencian City local police force could be left badly undermanned if new rules on early retirement come into force as expected. The new law would mean that officers can take retirement if they wish at the age of 59, meaning that around 16% of the current force that the new rule covers could theoretically opt to leave at the same time. The current police numbers in the city have dropped by more than 200

9

by Alex Trelinski

over the last decade as recruitment has failed to match numbers leaving the service with low policing levels already seen as a problem. Even if a new recruitment drive is put in place, there will be a resource gap of at least six months while new officers are selected and trained. Many smaller towns and cities across the Community are facing similar problems to the Valencian capital according to recent reports.

Financial Heart healthy schools help for greener fuel CREVILLENT has purchased and installed seven new defibrillators for schools in the Alicante town. The Miguel Hernandez, San Luis Gonzaga, Cardenal Belluga and Senora del Carmen primary schools along with the Macia Abela and Canon Manchon secondaries now all have the semiautomatic devices. Defibrillators are vital for the period between someone having a cardiac incident and a medical team arriving.

DENIA based shipping firm Balearia is to receive a grant of just under €12 million from the European Union to help it convert to a more environmentally friendly fuel. All shipping companies operating within the EU will have to change to fuel with low sulphur content by 2020. In anticipation of this Balearia has been working towards the change, something the EU said they were handling “efficiently, sustainably and methodically.” The main fuel used will soon be liquefied natural gas, a far “greener” fossil fuel.

by Alex Trelinski

Teachers are to be trained on the use of the machines, with this being arranged and paid for by the company that installed the devices along with the Red Cross. A spokesman for the Education Department said that the town should be proud of their achievement as only around 5% of Spanish schools currently have defibrillators.

ALICANTE’S ADDA building is rightly seen as one of the city’s most important and best-designed structures, an auditorium which hosts everything from congresses to concerts. However, despite being some visitor’s first impression of the city, the concourse and surrounding area have been described as dirty, smelly and plagued with rats.

Local residents have complained to the council, saying that the area only gets cleaned about once a fortnight with chewing gum, dog waste and graffiti all adding to the impression of general neglect. One local said that the rats are huge and she has seen them climb walls into the nearby school. The council have not commented at this stage.

A total of 35 countries have invested funds in a project that scientists believe has the potential to solve many of the planet’s growing energy problems. What the massive fossil fuel industry lobby think of the project is not known at this stage.

Double death in traffic accident

friend of the boy she had been in contact with. The court then heard how he then allegedly took her in his car and drove to a remote area where he raped her. She was discovered by a local resident later and said to be “terrified and paralysed with fear.” The suspect had left sufficient evidence to be tracked down and was arrested and charged with child rape.

SpeciaArlticFleesuapptliedubyre- Sun Lawyers Spanish NIE Number Vs. Spanish residency

Business & Finance

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Many people think the NIE number is the Spanish residency card, which sometimes can bring a lot of confusion when it comes to legal procedures (i.e. exchanging your driving licence, where one of the requirements is the Spanish residency card). Therefore, we would like to clarify on this article what’s what. What is an NIE number Both EU citizens and non-Eu citizens can obtain the NIE number, which is just an identification number for foreigners (“Número de Identificación de Extranjero” in Spanish) as well as a fiscal number. The NIE number document has your name, citizenship, date and place of birth recorded on it. Some people don’t realise how important the NIE number is. For example, your very first steps after moving to Spain, like opening a bank account and getting internet/phone contracts, will require an NIE number. The NIE number is an essential legal document for those who have a professional or economic interest in Spain. You must have an NIE number if you want to: • Buy/sell a property in Spain

MAY’S FINAL GAMBIT The UK’s transition out of the EU could be extended by “a matter of months” to ensure no hard border in Northern Ireland, Theresa May has said. The prime minister said this was a new idea that had emerged in negotiations and was not expected to be used. The UK leaves the EU in March, and the

Buy/sell a vehicle Study in Spain Set up a company, or work in Spain Pay tax (property annual tax, road tax, etc) • Apply for a mortgage or any other kind of loan The number usually starts with the letter X or Y and can end with any other letter, for example:Y0000000-K or X0000000–M. Now, this is very important: The fact of having the NIE number doesn’t mean that you are legally resident in Spain. We will clarifythis point next. What is a Residency Card? It is just a permit to allow you to live in Spain. The format of the Spanish residency for EU citizens is a small green card incorporating your NIE number, your personal details, address, and citizenship; no personal photo. The non-EU version of the Spanish residency has a photo. The residency card can be used in the same way as an NIE number, for example, to change your taxpayer status at the tax office, exchanging your driving licence and other requirements.

EU citizens must apply for the residency card if they’re going to spend more than 90 days in Spain. Why do I need the Residency Card? If would like to make Spain your future home, then you should think about applying for the Spanish residency card. When you have Spanish residencyfor over 5 years you will be able to obtain permanent status. Are you from the UK? If yes, it would be a good idea tohave in mind the Brexit deadline when apply for your residency card, as we described in the previous article. Only having the residency cardwillgive you the right to be a legal resident in Spain, compared with the NIE number, which is just an ID certificate. How can I apply for Residency Card and NIE? Both procedures must be done at the relevant Spanish foreign affairs office (“oficina de extranjería”, in Spanish). We can apply for your NIE number on your behalf, through a “Power of

Attorney”, a topic we will speak about soon in the“The Weekender”. For the Spanish residency you must be present in person.

Some Tory MPs and Brexit campaigners are angry at the idea of the UK being tied to EU rules for longer. It comes after a summit of EU leaders in Brussels failed to make decisive progress in reaching an agreement. Mrs May addressed her 27 European counterparts on Wednesday evening, urging them to give ground and end the current Brexit deadlock. Speaking on Thursday morning, Mrs May said that the UK had already put forward a proposal to avoid the need for either a hard border or a customs border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. She added: “A further idea that has emerged - and it is an idea at this stage - is to create an option to extend the implementation period for a matter of months - and it would only be for a matter of months.”

IF you’re reading this on the web edition of “The Weekender” chances are that you’re using technology developed by Paul Allen who died this week aged 65. Allen was the co-founder of Microsoft and though he was never as well known as business partner Bill Gates, his contribution to what we take for granted nowadays should not be underestimated. Mr Gates summed it up when he said simply that “personal computing would not have existed without him”, going on to pay a heartfelt tribute to one of his oldest friends. Mr Allen founded

Microsoft with Gates in 1975 and their shared passion for computers led to the development of Windows and DOS, which heralded the advent of affordable and user friendly personal computers. Allen left the company in 1983 after being diagnosed with cancer but walked away with a 40% holding which meant that he was one of the world’s wealthiest men when he died. In common with Gates, he was a renowned philanthropist and also owned two major sports teams, the Seattle Seahawks American football team and Portland Trail Blazers basketball team.

He overcame his cancer in the 1980s but was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2009. He seemed to have beaten that but this month revealed the disease had returned and it was complications from the disease that claimed his life this week. Paul Gardner Allen was born on 21 January 1953 in Seattle and died in the same city on 15 October 2018, aged 65. During his life it was estimated that he gave over $2 billion to causes such as science, the environment, the arts and education. His sister Jody said he was “a remarkable individual on every level.”

Hunters at fault for British cyclist´s death Spanish power Saudis back in the giant commits spotlight after journalist´s to UK death IN a development that will be watched with interest by some people in this part of the world, a campaign has been started to stop armed hunts in certain areas after a British man was killed in France this week. Marc Sutton, aged 34, was cycling in the French Alps when he was shot and killed after a hunter mistook him for an

animal. Mr Sutton was cycling on a designated mountain bike track and the hunters were also operating legally. Questions are being raised as to how hunting can be permitted so close to where the public is passing through and friends of Mr Sutton have written to the local mayor to demand a change in the rules.

In Alicante Province there have been numerous social media complaints about areas such as Javea’s Covatelles where hunters operate close to local urbanisations, leaving many in fear of their safety and that of pets. There are also concerns about the “out of control” dog packs that accompany the socalled sportsmen.

IBERDROLA, which owns UK power supplier Scottish Power, has announced the sale of Drax, a subsidiary within Scottish Power that owns four gas supply plants. The sale means that the firm is the first in the UK to provide 100% renewable energy, in this case wind power, with Drax being the last vestige of the firm to use fossil fuels.

In a press conference announcing the ₤700 million sale Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Sanchez stressed his firms commitment to the UK calling it “a key market for us and one of the present and future pillars of the group.” The statement will help quell any rumours regarding Iberdrola’s presence in the UK after Britain leaves the EU.

THE disappearance and probable murder of a journalist in the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Turkey has raised a number of issues, including the increasing danger investigative journalist find themselves in and the leeway the international community seems to give the oil rich Saudis. Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian writer and former editor of the Arab News Channel, was visiting the Saudi embassy in Turkey where he was in exile, fearing for his safety due to criticism of the Saudi regime. He never returned from the visit and while it is now becoming clear that Mr Khashoggi died in the embassy the Saudis deny any involvement in the incident. There is growing evidence that a “hit squad” flew in to deal with

the journalist and Turkey say they have audio proof he was murdered, possibly from an I-watch the victim was wearing. President Trump initially took a hard line on the matter but has now suggested the death may be down to “rogue killers”, a statement he has been unable to elaborate on or produce evidence to support. Many experts on the Middle East say that if for example Iran or Iraq had acted in this way the sabre rattling would be at fever pitch. Meanwhile the world is taking a much softer stance on the Saudis who are also embroiled in a nasty conflict which is killing huge numbers of Yemeni civilians, often with arms supplied by the west. If it is proved he has been killed Mr

Khashoggi will be the latest in a long line of dissenting writers who have been murdered or died suspiciously, not just in places like South America and the Middle East but also closer to home in Malta, Germany and Bulgaria.

Mr and Mrs Williams fall for Benidorm singer The biggest secret in Benidorm was let out of the bag last weekend, when the local star, Danny Tetley was put through to compete with fifteen other acts on the live shows of this year’s X Factor, which begin on ITV1 this coming Saturday. Danny, 37, originally from Bradford, gave a show-stopping performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, at the house of his mentor, Ayda Field, otherwise known as Mrs Robbie Williams, which convinced her to choose him as one of her four remaining contestants in the over 25’s category. Danny, who has spent many years singing in venues around Benidorm, is well known in the resort for his amazing vocal talents. However, after building up a loyal fanbase amongst holidaymakers and

local residents, he now has a golden opportunity to spread that fame far and wide through his appearances on the live Saturday and Sunday night X Factor shows this Autumn. The singer, who auditioned earlier in the summer before the judging panel of Robbie and Ayda Williams, Louis Tomlinson and Simon Cowell, revealed that he was rejected by Cowell 17 years ago at the tender age of 20 at a try out for the Pop Idol singing competition. This time, Danny quickly became one of the panel’s favourites, progressing through the boot camp, six chair challenge and finally judges houses stages of the competition. He was sworn to secrecy for the whole of his time on the show,

unable to reveal his progress until the final emotionally charged Sunday show last weekend, when he became the final contestant to be put through to the live shows. Born with both a cleft palate and harelip, leaving his Mother worried that he would be unable to speak, Danny battled through multiple operations to follow his dream of becoming a singer. Speaking to his army of Facebook followers via video following Sunday’s airing of the show, an excited Danny confirmed the news and urged his fans to start voting for him and supporting him, wearing a t-shirt saying #VOTE DANNY

TETLEY, #TEAMTETLEY and #MILKYBUKID. He already has a huge admirer in superstar judge Robbie Williams, who said that Danny was a “pure underdog” and likened his singing comeback to a Rocky story. “You know, there are millions of people watching this show and I hope that millions of people will get behind him and I think they will because you can’t fail just to like the man and root for him.

“I think, out of all the contestants, as a punter which I also am of this TV show, there’s no one else on this show that you’re going to root for more than him and he deserves that because he’s a wonderful man.” Follow Danny’s journey on his Facebook pages Danny Tetley and Danny Tetley’s got the X Factor, on twitter @danny_tetley and on his Instagram page @ dannytetleyofficial.

Altea goes ECO 250 kilo garbage grab A three-day festival showcasing the best of ecological food, drinks and products will set up in the heart of Altea this weekend. EcoAltea has been part of the towns fiesta programme for the past ten years and has grown to become one of the largest of its type in the whole region. Starting on Friday October 19th and running through to Sunday, October 21st, the fair takes over the car park adjacent to the Altea Palau theatre and the adjoining grounds of the Miguel Hernandez University campus. With scores of stalls

offering hand-made, ethical goods and home grown organic produce, the event is a must visit opportunity for people looking to live a healthier, more environmentally aware lifestyle. One of the most popular features of EcoAltea is the food zone, which offers those with an appetite, a wide range of vegetarian and vegan street food from around the world, with tastes from Asia, India, South America and The Caribbean, sitting alongside local Spanish and European fare.

All this can be washed down with a glass or two of artisan beer and wine crafted and sold by local producers. Organized by the nonprofit making Ecoaltea Association to promote ecological and sustainable alternatives, the festival sees a host of farmers, artisans, producers, collectives, companies, musicians, actors, speakers, and volunteers come together in a friendly inclusive atmosphere. The festival runs from late morning to late evening daily, with entertainment from bands, musicians, dancers and speakers throughout the day.

Benidorm bins the plasticos

Benidorm city councillors have approved a scheme to cut down on the amount of disposable plastic glasses used by drinkers during the many fiestas that take place throughout the year in the resort. The council plan to distribute 10,000 reusable glasses to the scores of penyas that set up in old town bars and premises on a temporary basis during the upcoming Fiesta Mayorales, which take place from November 10th to 14th.

by Andy Mansell

These famous November fiestas are officially the most important of the year on the Benidorm calendar. Scores of old town bars and restaurants are vacated by their proprietors and handed over to the many social clubs, known as penyas, who pay them a substantial fee. These penyas, provide free drinks and food to their penyistas, or members, throughout the five days

of festivities, some never closing their doors for the whole duration. Last week councillors from all sides, passed the directive, which will cost 1,500 euros, but will help to reduce the resorts environmental footprint during big fiesta events. Councillor Jesus Carrobles, explained the decision was another stepping stone on Benidorm’s journey towards becoming a designated Eco City.

as usual plastic made up a large proportion, all of which will now be recycled where possible. After the mornings work those taking part all got together at Marina El Portet for a well-deserved drink.

THE “Bus de la llengua” is currently touring the Marina Alta and was scheduled to visit Javea on 17 October and is then due to stop in Benissa on 20 October and Calpe on Tuesday, 23 October. The bus is promoting the Valencian dialect through fun activities

aimed at the family as a whole. It is hoping to help people who don’t have Valenciano as a first language by giving them the confidence to use it more. Workshops include a speed quiz, roulette and a crafting activity for the smaller ones. For the full itinerary go to www. sempreteua.gva.es

Church concerts continue

PEDREGUER’S Friday night concert series “Concerts de la Tardor” continues this week before concluding next Friday. The venue for each recital has been the Santa Creu Church and revolves around the superb Grenzing organ which was donated to the parish 20 years ago. October 19 has Francisco Gil on the oboe accompanying

organist Saskia Roures. Mr Gil will actually be playing a number of different oboes, including the baroque, modern and English. Interpretations will include Bach, Krebs and Hakim. The 26 October concert is set to be a spectacular choral affair dedicated to the music of

Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, all Viennese composers from the heyday of Austrian orchestral music. As well as the choir there will be solo performances from renowned soprano, tenor and baritone singers, all accompanied by organist Josep Giner. No market during fair

Comedy for a good cause

DENIA Town Hall has confirmed that the Monday and Friday markets normally held in the Torrecremada car park will be cancelled during the Fira de Tots Sants as no alternative venue could be found. This means there will be no Monday street market on the 22nd, 29th of October and 5th November and no rastro on

FOR economic reasons the Red Cross in Javea has had to stop its 24hour emergency service in the Marina Alta town. The service will be fully maintained at weekends but from Monday to Thursday for both emergencies and social care, the hours will now only be from 8 am to 10 pm. The change came into effect from 1 October; the Red Cross said that the number of different activities it needs to carry out within Javea cannot be met on the current budget. Emergency health care from the Generalitat and the town’s own Basic Life Support unit remain in place as before.

Talking diabetes

by Matthew Richards

OLIVA’S Health Department is holding a number of workshops on the subject of diabetes, one of the western world’s fastest growing ailments largely due to the nature of the modern diet. The talks are at the town’s Centro de Salud each Friday from 8 November until 20 December at 12 to 2pm in the afternoon. Hosted by nurses who are experts in the field, the first programme is “What is diabetes” followed by weekly workshops on food, exercise, complications, foot care and the use of insulin. Contact the Health Centre’s help desk for further information.

Pilgrims at the port

DENIA is now part of the famous Camino de Santiago and travellers can get their “Pilgrim Passports” stamped at the Balearia Port ferry terminal in the town. The new route starts at the Lluc Monastery in Mallorca and those walking or otherwise travelling the trail then make their way to Denia via the ferry from Palma. The Fundacio Balearia has been given the authority to stamp the passports by Camino del Alba, the association that looks after such matters. Last weekend the first 25 pilgrims to use the new trail arrived in Denia on board the Cecilia

Payne ferry. On arrival they were met by representatives from Denia Town Hall and Balearia, becoming the first to be issued with the new stamp. The Camino de Santiago is the trek to the shrine of St James (Santiago) at the Galician town of Santiago de Compostela. Starting out in medieval times as a walk done by only the most devout, the route has now become a major tourist attraction in it’s own right, attracting a mixture of the faithful and those who want to experience the challenge of the marathon undertaking.

British are best customers ANTONIO Catalá, whose family own and run the historic Jayan cinema in Jávea old town, has said that his best customers are the British. They turn out in force and on a regular basis for the films he screens at least once a week in the original audio version, which is usually English thanks mainly to the huge US film industry. Antonio was giving an update on the progress of the refurbishment which has kept the 1950s building closed since 11 September. “The reform is taking longer than we expected but 20 people are currently working hard on site,” he said, adding it should reopen by the end of the month - when the British can look forward to their regular movie fix once again.

Drone control technology tested BENIDORM was set to be the first municipality in Spain test an “anti-drone” system during this year’s Iberia Festival. Drones are becoming increasingly popular and affordable but can constitute a hazard, especially at events which have a high concentration of people. The pioneering system is capable of locating a drone up to two kilometres away, identifying the pilot and ensuring it is landed safely. It is perfectly safe and helps

by Matthew Richards

land the machines by neutralising the GPS and radio signals. By identifying the pilot the authorities are able to decide whether to take legal action against them. The law currently prohibits the use of drones near outdoor events and the flying of them between buildings in built-up areas. Drones are increasingly used by the police in Benidorm and the law is being reviewed about where the authorities can safely fly them.

Suspect exam cancelled

THE mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, has decided to annul the results of a Local Police exam that may have been compromised. This effectively means that the entire selection process is suspended while the matter is investigated and a new procedure put in place. There had been rumours that some of the answers to the tests had been

by Matthew Richards

leaked to certain candidates and at least one person has been accused of copying answers, something they deny. This is the second controversy surrounding such exams in Benidorm recently after test papers in the summer exams were handed out marked with some of the answers.

Sister aircrew associations celebrate the battle of Britain together The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca was joined by its sister Aircrew Association from the island of Cyprus to Celebrate the Battle of Britain at a formal lunch held on the 19th September at the Cumbre Restaurant, Benitachell. Seven members of the Cyprus Association had travelled from Cyprus to be guests of the Costa Blanca Association and spend a week on the Costa Blanca. Life Vice President Peter Langley hosted an excellent ‘meet and greet’ lunch at his villa in Javea on Tuesday the 18th September and, having enjoyed a ‘free’ day on Thursday 20th September, the Cyprus guests were treated to another super, farewell paella lunch at the Bar Canif in Beni Marco on Friday, 21stSeptember . During this farewell lunch, organised excellently by Clive Rothwell, The Aircrew Association Cyprus’ Chairman, James Heath presented a book to the Costa Blanca hosts as a memento of their visit. However, the highlight of the visitors’ visit, organised and coordinated superbly by John Othen, the Association’s Treasurer, was definitely Wednesday’s Battle of Britain Lunch. Both Associations enjoyed prelunch drinks in the comfortable

surroundings of the Cumbre Restaurant’s terrace and, after a group photograph, organised by Peter Johnson and taken by Helen Kearney, proceeded to the lunch and were welcomed to this special occasion by Max Maxwell, The Chairman of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca. The Association’s Honorary Chaplain, Father Marcus Ronchetti then said a highly appropriate Grace and invited Members of both Associations and other guests to enjoy the lunch, having “with the power with which he had been ‘invested’, confirmed that they were fit to eat”! During the lunch, a very successful raffle, organised by, Tricia Smith, the wife of one of the Association’s Members was held. The occasion was also an appropriate moment for one of the Association’s nine over 90 years of age Members, Jerry Juroe, to be congratulated by all Members and guests on reaching his 95th birthday that day! The arrival of Jerry’s birthday cake was met by a very audible rendition of Happy Birthday in English and Spanish before Jerry extinguished the many candles with mature style! This moving but happy moment was followed by the reading of The Aircrew Exhortation by the Association’s Treasurer,John

Othen and the loyal toasts to King Felipe by Life Vice President Peter Langley and The Queen by Rick Willey, the Secretary of the Cyprus Association. Max Maxwell then introduced the Chairman of the Cyprus Association, James Heath, who gave an excellent ‘Perspective of The Battle of Britain’ before proposing the toast ‘To Those Who Gave So much’. Attractive glass goblets, suitably engraved, were then presented to the visitors individually by Life Vice President Peter Langley who was deputising for the Association’s President, Henry Horth, who was not able to attend the lunch, due to a sudden bout of ill health. The proceedings were closed in the customary Aircrew Association manner with the Aircrew Toast: ‘To Absent Friends and Fellow Aircrew’ proposed by Life Vice President Peter Langley. This was a unique occasion for both Associations and there is an aspiration from both Associations to repeat the combined celebration, possibly in a location mutually acceptable to both. Malta 2019/2020? If any reader would like to know more about the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca they should contact the Secretary on: 966404123.

My sympathy goes out to the people in Playa Flamenca that you have covered as being made homeless, through no fault of their own, after their building collapsed I hope that they manage to get their lives back on track as soon as possible and return to some kind of normality. Unfortunately the various cogs and wheels over here at times seem to grind along very slowly, and all I seem to have read about are kind and sympathetic words from people in power, but little or no practical action to help them. Colin Bradford, Torrevieja. A group of us watched England’s footie win over Spain on Monday night in a local bar, which is frequented by Spaniards. It’s a regular local of ours and we enjoyed the jovial legpulling of almost walking into the lion’s den before kick-off. We learnt so many colloquial Spanish phrases from the customers in the first half, which I will not reproduce here, plus we had the bonus of almost having the place to ourselves for the second period. 5 things to help your pet live a healthier life (BPT) - Pets are part of the family, so it’s important to practice preventative care to support their well-being and help them live long, healthy lives. Just like people, pets can be affected by chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and allergies. That’s why it’s always good to stay informed and be proactive to help avoid or at least delay the onset of chronic conditions in pets. Here’s 5 things to know about caring for your pet: More pets have allergies: Cats and dogs are more prone to certain conditions now than they have been in the past. For example, over the past 10 years there’s been a 30 percent increase in environmental allergy cases in dogs and an 11 percent increase in cats, according to the 2018 Banfield Pet Health Report. Pets can have chronic conditions: Pets are also more prone to being overweight, and the number of obesity cases is rising. One in three pets is overweight and the numbers are growing. While you can make sure your pet exercises and eats a nutritionally balanced diet, there are many health conditions you have no control over. Just like us humans, pets can develop

chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and thyroid disease. Pets need annual checkups too: Investing in preventative care is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your pet is healthy. Annual checkups allow your vet to screen for issues and provide insight on any concerns. Pets’ chronic conditions are manageable: If your pet has a chronic condition that needs treatment, don’t panic. You may have to make some lifestyle adjustments to your pet’s diet or daily exercise routine, but these changes are usually manageable and well worth it for your pet’s health. Pet prescriptions may be available at your local pharmacy: If you need prescription medications

to treat your pet’s chronic conditions, look for alternatives that could save you money. Many of the same prescriptions we use to treat our chronic conditions are also used to treat pets, just at a different dosage. That means you can take advantage of the deep discounts offered with the Inside Rx Pets card which can be used in more than 40,000 pharmacies and offer savings on commonly prescribed medications such as insulin and antibiotics. More information is available at InsideRx.com/pets. Taking preventative measures for your pets’ health will help save costs in the long run, just like it does with people. What’s more, it will help ensure that your favorite furry family members are by your side for many years to come.

Health & Beauty - Local Age-related hearing loss

There are many different forms of hearing loss and by far the most common form is age-related hearing loss. Agerelated hearing loss is a natural part of the ageing process. The passing of time is something that impacts on people differently but as we get older the hair cells in your inner ear begin to die and the more hair cells that die, the worse our hearing will get. It, therefore, stands to reason that the older you get, the more likely it will be that you will suffer from hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss is also known as Presbycusis and is the cumulative effect of ageing on hearing. It is a progressive bilateral symmetrical age-related sensorineural hearing loss. The hearing loss tends to be significantly more at higher frequencies. Hearing loss that accumulates with age but is caused by factors other than normal ageing is not Presbycusis, although differentiating the individual effects of multiple causes of hearing loss can be difficult. Research indicates that around one-quarter of people aged between 65 and 75 will suffer hearing loss which is related to their age alone. For people over the age of 75, it is believed that around half of the population suffer from hearing loss which is purely down to their age. It is no wonder, then, that this provides a huge source of frustration for a large number of people, invariably not just those who are suffering. You should be aware that many people will start to suffer a decrease in the quality of their hearing in their 30s or 40s but this is

where people being unable to recognise the problems can have an impact. One of the biggest factors about age-related hearing loss is the fact that it deteriorates slowly over time, which means that people don’t really notice it until it has become very obvious. If a person loses their hearing through illness, injury or an accident, the loss of hearing can be noticeable immediately. This provides people with the opportunity to get investigated and hopefully find a solution to their hearing problem. When the quality of your hearing diminishes over time, you may not notice and this means you could leave it a lot longer to receive help. While it should be noted that hearing loss through age is incurable, it can often be assisted by the use of devices such as hearing aids. This means there is always hope that your hearing can be improved and boost your chances of being able to lead as normal a life as possible.

What Causes Hearing Loss? There are two main types of hearing loss. Presbyacusis is the type of hearing loss that is referred to above and is sensorineural, while the other form of hearing loss is called a conductive hearing loss. The biggest factor in presbyacusis is the ageing process but there will sometimes be other factors involved. Age-related hearing loss can be hereditary, according to several studies but there are also environmental factors that are also known to cause this condition. For instance, repeated exposure

to loud noise is proved to have an impact on age-related hearing loss. There have been numerous studies that indicate smokers are also more likely to develop age-related hearing loss. This is because the quality of the blood supply is vital to our hearing, and for this reason, other illness/ conditions/medication can also impact our ability to hear. The main factor in agerelated hearing loss comes when these hair cells, which are extremely sensitive, are damaged and eventually die. When there are fewer hairs to move the sound from the inner ear to the brain, hearing loss occurs. In addition to old age, some of the common causes of sensorineural hearing loss include:• Injury • Infection such as meningitis or mumps • A loud noise • Benign Tumours • Meniere’s Disease • Neurological • Conditions

having any problems resolved at an earlier basis. Your hearing falls into this category and you should have an annual check if you are over 60/believe you have a hearing/know you have hearing loss. If you start to become aware of diminished hearing, it is important for you to see a GP or hearing professional as soon as possible. They will be able to carry out a number of simple tests and if they suspect that you are suffering from hearing loss, they will give you the appropriate advice, be that a hearing solution or maybe a referral to an ENT specialist. There is absolutely nothing to worry about and if you do have hearing issues, a hearing specialist will provide you with the best support. At The Hearing Clinic we provide free hearing tests, so if you do have concerns about your hearing, it is important to see a hearing professional. Some people will think that getting older means you have to put up with these issues. 7 Days to save your life

When you meet the owners of Inside Out Spain it is difficult to believe that only recently they were suffering from the effects of ill health, addiction and depression.

Nestled among the Bernia Mountains in the Lliber Region of the Costa Blanca, the resort provides the resources and support for anyone who wants to get their life on track. Looking at the stunning accommodation, breathtaking views and fabulous facilities it would be easy to think that they have found a great, pleasurable lifestyle - and that any talk of their stressful life is only what the rest of us “mere mortals” suffer on a daily basis. Gareth Stubbs and Jeroen Coenen have taken stress to the extreme: two heart attacks, ruptured ulcers, alcohol and drug issues, attempted suicide, bipolar disorder, broken relationships and marriages, diabetes, blood pressure problems and absolutely no life balance at all were the tip of the iceberg. But that was then and this is now. Gareth and Jeroen have both struggled with a life that challenged them on many levels - to the point that they lost much of what they had around them. Not what you’d expect from two young men who have developed a passion for helping people to live healthy lives. Not just in terms of how they look, but also how they feel and think. Inside Out Spain isn’t a health spa you go to for a quick fix and a nice break away from everything although judging by the many testimonials on TripAdvisor, these things do happen. It’s more like a 7-day experience that creates a new journey for the rest of your life. Gareth said: “If you had said to us five years ago that we would each find a friend who had such similar dreams, and together find the courage to make one of our biggest dreams a reality, we probably would have laughed at you. And if you had looked into our separate lives over a decade ago, opening a health resort probably would have been laughed at because the stresses and strains of everyday life were what ruled every decision we made.” The results speak for themselves. Testimonials state great changes for many of the visitors, with one regular visitor losing four stone in less than a year and

completely changing his life and health. The programme doesn’t just involve juices and exercise, although that in itself provides an initial threeday detox. There are five different approaches to the week, each complementing the other, so that guests take home knowledge and a new way of thinking. Gareth said: “We see it as having seven days to save someone’s life. They learn what scares them, what excites them and how to face up to the glass ceiling that is preventing them from being who they want to be.” Jeroen said: “We have created a place to understand the power of possibility, stretch your limits and finally understand what it truly means to supercharge your life. It is a space where you can retreat from all the stress and distraction of the daily routine of life, get away from it all and find your home away from home.” If there is one thing that they are passionate about at Inside Out Spain, then it is life, which for some people may seem like a vast word that conjures up all sorts of images. For them, the Inside Out Living Experience is about embracing what life is truly about - whatever that might mean for you. Gareth said: “It is about breaking free from the excuses and labels that restrict us, hold us back and keep us stuck in that vicious cycle of neverending dieting, weight-loss battles, stressful living and self-sabotaging bad habits. In a nutshell, the Inside Out Living philosophy is about real-life healthy living.” But unlike specific weightloss retreats, which Gareth

and Jeroen are keen to point out is not their specific focus but more of a side effect, the philosophy is not about extremes and radical changes to your lifestyle. “We choose to follow our own version of healthy, balanced living, one that might offend and upset people because it goes against some beliefs; one that tests the myths and breaks through the barriers, showing people how simple and fun healthy, balanced living can really be - when we give ourselves the permission.’ This means the resort is not vegan or vegetarian, raw foodies or juice fanatics. Neither are they exercise junkies or yogis who meditate all day. “We enjoy chocolate and wine, meat and potatoes, snacks and sneaky treats, lazy duvet days on the couch and even days where we can’t be bothered to do anything. We have excellent days, good days and days where nothing appears to work, no matter how hard we try. We know that life is for living and that if we want results, we need to take responsibility, create strategies and go for them. Basically, we’re regular people who do regular things and live a healthy life.” So it seems that joining the family at Inside Out Spain will find you educating yourself, finding your personal “Balance Factor” and releasing it into your life so that it becomes a far more satisfying experience - far beyond the week or so you might spend at the gloriously relaxing and stunningly positioned Spanish resort. It’s a life change that may also help you get into those smaller clothes.

Home Improvement: 4 ways to cheaper DIY success We all like making improvements to our home, adding handy new additions to old rooms and re-imagining spaces to suit new tastes. The only problem is, few of us can afford this kind of thing as regularly as we’d like. Or maybe we can. Contrary to popular belief, doing up your home doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, or cause you huge inconveniencedepending on the nature of the job, that is. By being smart, careful and considered, there are plenty of ways we can make a huge impact on the house without having the same on our bank balance. Here are our top five tips to achieving that successfully. • What’s the job? Whilst it’s true there are many tasks for which you’re going to need some hired help, there are numerous instances where this simple isn’t the case. From painting to draught

excluding to unblocking drains, always start by figuring out if you can do it yourself, and if you can then why not go and do it?

once you know what you need, ensuring you have the best price around when it’s finally time to hit ‘Buy Now’.

• Don’t blame the tools. It might seem sensible to look into buying old equipment and tools, but due to the heavy wear and tear factors involved in some DIY this can be a foolish decision. Old kit just won’t stand up to the same punishment as new, meaning often times it will actually work out cheaper in the long run to fork out for new gadgets.

• Use recommendations. If you really aren’t able to put the DIY into home improvements, and really do need to call on the professionals, then don’t simply start Googling handymen in your area. Ask around friends, family, and neighbours for recommendations on local trades and handymen (and women) in your area.

• Shop around. Just because you’re buying new doesn’t mean you have to buy blindly. It’s easier that you might think to get a decent deal on good quality tools, materials and other kit, so spend some time looking around online

BRITS ARE BUYING Despite all the Brexit uncertainty, or perhaps because of it, Spanish property businesses are reporting increased interest from British customers. “Over the last year we have seen reservations of our Spanish properties by British buyers shoot up by 77 per cent,” said Marc Pritchard, of Taylor Wimpey España. “It certainly seems that Brexit has not dampened British buyers’ appetite for holiday homes, at least not in Spain. If anything, the decision to leave the EU has pushed many into hurrying to purchase a home overseas before the UK actually leaves the EU.”

by Alex Trelinski

“Many of the people we are talking to are choosing to move to France, Spain or Portugal before the Brexit date of March 29th, so they are set up and registered in their new country before the UK’s exit,” said Jason Porter from advisers Blevins Franks. If you’re buying purely as a holiday home, there is less pressure to purchase before Brexit or the end of the transition period. Jonathan Eshkeri at E&G Solicitors said: “The UK leaving the EU will not affect British

citizens during the property purchase at all. The costs remain the same, the right to purchase remains the same and the right to sell and transfer the

proceeds of sale out of Spain will remain the same, based on the current position in respect of nationals of other non-EU member states.”

MORE MORTGAGES Global LATEST figures from Spain’s notaries show the continued upturn in property sales in the country, with a big rise in mortgages granted in the Valencia region. Over 161 thousand sales were concluded between April and May this year, which is a rise of almost 11 per cent on the same period last year. The Valencia and Murcia regional rises were over 15 per cent according to the General Council of Notaries report, though prices only increased at a yearly national average of one point seven per cent. Property mortgages

went up by over 20 per cent in Valencia, compared to 2017, whilst Murcia saw a minor increase of one point four per cent.

THE “Irish Times” has posed the question what sort of property will €375,000 buy you in five very different countries, including Spain. The paper chose one of the pricier parts of coastal Spain for their search and concluded that you could buy a 180 square metre beachfront house in Estepona (Málaga) complete with swimming pool and gym. In Turkey’s affluent Kalkan the cash could obtain a similar

property while in France you could bag a château in the Atlantic Pyrenees with a pool and 2.5 acres of land plus a large pool. In the Thai resort of Koh Samui which is very popular with expats, for €375,000 you can acquire a three bedroom property with all mod cons and an infinity pool. Your money wouldn’t go so far in Ireland with the cash being able to get you a four bedroom bungalow in County Cork.

Perhaps it’s because I’m getting long in the tooth, but there’s something about using contactless cards in a shop that spooks me, as opposed to chip and pin. But I suppose I need to get used to it, as a survey says that in the UK, contactless transactions are now more popular than chip and pin card transactions when people pay in stores Payments technology company Worldpay. which processes payments for large

Motoring

Jaguar I-PACE Is the Jaguar I-Pace really a worthy contender to the Telsa? The temptation to make this technology-led car a symbol of its own cleverness has largely been resisted. You sense there’s something special going on, there are few rivals to the Tesla Model X’s overt gimmicks. Jaguar has dropped its statement gear change column that rose ethereally from the centre console as you switched the car on. The I-Pace now features a more contemporary cockpit, with complex shapes and touchscreen. The details in the car really set it apart. The climate control temperature setting is built into the centre of the dial, whilst not a new idea it is beautifully done. These perhaps trivial details show a necessary attention to detail in a range that starts at over €60,000. The I-Pace is certainly not a traditional Jaguar saloon, but neither is it an SUV or a true coupe. It stands out in a crowd, while never jarring. There is plenty of space for four adults, maybe five at a squeeze, with ample boot

space. The rear seats fold down to reveal a massive cargo space, ideal for taking the bin bags to the basura after a long weekend. The four-wheel-drive Jaguar I-Pace is fully electric with a motor at the front driving the front wheels. The large battery pack lies beneath the floor. The twin motors provide 400hp in total. That’s more than twice the power of a regular Jaguar E-Pace with a diesel engine. It´s actually a bit more than a standard Porsche 911. The acceleration is rapid, 4.5 seconds to reach 62mph. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the I-Pace´s electric motors work in reverse, becoming generators of electricity to recharge the battery. The force is so powerful that the I-Pace will slow effectively without brakes most of the time. Jaguar says that on a hilly road it’s possible to gain as much as 70% of the energy used going uphill through the regenerative braking system on the way down. To make the most of this takes some practice, easing

off the throttle gently to avoid slowing down too much, which can bring on a sense of motion sickness. If you prefer you can switch the regenerative braking system off, so the I-Pace behaves like a regular car. Electric cars are known

f o r being quiet and the Jaguar is no different in this regard. For those that love the noise of regular engines, the road speed can be linked to a sound generator that pumps the sound of a petrol engine

through the loudspeakers. For pedestrian safety, Jaguar’s engineers have developed an exterior sound that can be heard at speeds up to 20km/h and exceeds the 56dB(A) minimum required by forthcoming European legislation – the

strictest in the world – for all new EVs from July 2019. It is emitted from a speaker located behind the front grille, can be heard in every direction and cannot be disengaged. A beautifully finished, very impressive machine.

Cleaner motoring ahead

Dyson, Yes the company better known for its vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, and bladeless fans is currently making an electric vehicle. Rumours of Dyson’s EV first appeared in the UK Government’s National Infrastructure Delivery Plan 2016-2021 which stated: ‘Dyson is to develop a new battery electric vehicle at their headquarters in Malmesbury, Wiltshire… This will secure £174 million of investment in the area, creating over 500 jobs, mostly in engineering.’ The revelation was quickly redacted in favour of: ‘The government is providing a grant up to £16m to Dyson to support research and development for battery technology at their site in Malmesbury.’ So how far along is Dyson in its EV plans, and what should we expect from its electric car? Keep reading for everything we know about the forthcoming Dyson EV We now know Dyson already has 400 staff working on its EV project James Dyson confirmed recently that he had doubled the number of scientists working on the companies battery programme this year and is going on a fresh recruitment drive to add further specialists. Dyson´s EV team is based in Hullavington, Wiltshire. The company’s main HQ is in Malmesbury. The electric vehicles could be built in the UK, Singapore, Malaysia or China, according to Dyson which is yet to

confirm the final details of course. Dyson has also revealed plans for a new 10-mile test track at its HQ in Hullavington. The new circuit will be built alongside two renovated 1938 hangars on the 517-acre site and should bring Dyson’s total investment on its electric car project to a cool £200m. The company announced earnings of £801 million in 2017, up 27% on the previous year’s earnings. Dyson has previuously told employees that the fast adoption of oxymoronically designated ‘clean diesels’ spurred him on to launch into the electric car market. He said “Some years ago, observing that automotive firms weren’t changing their spots, I committed the company to develop new battery technologies,” T h e D y s o n car may well have double the

energy density and range of today’s electric cars thanks to a breakthrough in solidstate batteries and its £69m acquisition of the battery company Sakti3. A start-up, launched by Professor Ann Marie Sastry out of the University of Michigan. Sakti3 claims to have developed solidstate lithium-ion batteries producing over 400Wh/kg energy density, almost double the punch

of Tesla’s Panasonic cells. Telsa´s batteries are widely regarded as the industry leader at around 240Wh/kg. Dysons batteries should effectively double the vehicles range while potentially slashing costs to around £70 per kilowatthour, at which point electric vehicles start to rival petrol and diesel-powered cars on costs.

Lulu runs amok Hard to believe that the long running BBC childrens show Blue Peter turned 60 last week. The programme has been a stalwart of teatime viewing for generations of kids, desperate to be awarded a Blue Peter Badge for good work (The Queen has a gold one apparently). Amazing to discover the show has had 37 presenters over the years, many of whom gathered to celebrate the landmark birthday recently. Sadly, perhaps the most famous of them all, the daredevil, slightly barmy, John Noakes, was not amongst them. Famous for his catchphrase, directed regularly at

his equally daft dog, “Get Down Shep”, Noakes who passed away last year, was an integral part of some of Blue Peter’s most famous moments. My own favourite was back in the old black and white days, when Lulu a young elephant from London zoo, went on a rampage through the studio, had a wee and a poo, dragged her keeper through it and then trod on Noakes foot, all on live TV. If you’ve never seen it I urge you to check it out on Youtube….. hilarious with a capital ‘H’.

Michael Bublé Spokesperson denies ‘It’s Time’

Reports over last weekend suggesting Canadian Crooner, Michael Buble’s about to call time on his music career appear to be wide of the mark. Fans of the singer were left distraught following a Daily Mail article to promote his latest album entitled ‘Love’, due out in November, which he reportedly called his “last interview”. “I’m retiring from the business,” he is quoted as saying. “I’ve made the perfect record and now I can leave at the very top.” It’s no secret that the popular star and his wife Luisana have struggled to come to terms with the news revealed two years ago, that their son Noah, now five, had been diagnosed with liver cancer. Their eldest child subsequently underwent surgery to remove the tumour in Los Angeles, and in April, 2017, Luisana revealed that Noah was in recovery. Although the youngster is now in remission, Buble said that the hardship meant that “My whole being’s changed. My perception of life. “I don’t know if I can even get through this conversation without crying. And I’ve never lost control of my emotions in public.” Bublé went on to claim he’d had enough of fame. “I actually thought I’d never come back to the music business. I never fell out of

love with music, I just needed to put it aside.” However, the singer’s publicity machine quickly stepped into gear to quell the storm before it became a hurricane. “Michael Bublé has absolutely no plans to retire”, confirmed his representative Liz Rosenberg. “Perhaps as he discussed the different emotions he’s been through these last few years, that thought might have gone through his mind,” she added. “I assure you with a new album coming out, TV appearances, and a possible tour, he is not retiring.” As a ‘Bah Humbug’ Christmas cynic, I rather like the tongue in cheek, joke image doing the social media rounds at the moment, claiming Buble sleeps in a cave for ten months of the year until the festive season marketing juggernaut starts its engine and he miraculously appears.

You can go your own way!

An acrimonious split involving members of one of the most iconic bands of the last few generations took place last week. Fleetwood Mac singer-guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham, sued his longtime bandmates, including his ex-lover, Stevie Nicks, in the Los Angeles Superior Court for, among other charges, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of oral contract, and intentional interference with prospective economic

…….. in fact, advantage the usual rock ‘n’ roll stuff. The lawsuit went public last month when Buckingham announced, “We spent 43 years always finding a way to rise above our personal differences and our difficulties to pursue and articulate a higher truth. That is our legacy. That is what the songs are about. This is not the way you end something like this.” Apparently, the band kicked him off a yet another arena tour that he says would’ve made him around $14 million. Not that it’s about the money ……….. It’s apparently about the principal. Yes, we believe you Lindsey darling!

Micro Pig ‘Piggy Sma

m o ro g in s s re d n w o s it s d e e n e n o My ph I recall reading about the diva antics of the late, great, Whitney Houston some years ago, when she was due to appear on the BBC’s flagship music show Top of the Pops. One of the singer’s flunkies was despatched to enquire as to the journey the singer would be required to take on her journey from dressing room to stage. The show’s producer explained the star would have a short walk along a private corridor, before

descending stairs onto the performing area ….. “Excuse me, I’m gonna have to stop you right there,” said the assistant “Ms Houston does not do STAIRS!” I was reminded of the story this week when BBC chat show host Graham Norton revealed some of the crazy demands from his illustrious guests, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. “We had someone once who required nine dressing rooms. But we managed it, and then in the afternoon someone from their team came running into the production office saying, ‘It’s a 911 situation.

We need another dressing room.’ “We managed it but said, ‘Just out of interest, what’s it for?’ Completely straightfaced, ‘They want to charge their phone.’ Unwilling to name the guest, the Irishman left us to guess the identity or even gender of the diva ……. Answers on a postcard please.

Broccoli wants the Bodyguard for Bond Richard madden might not be a household name right now, but that could all be about to change. The actor, who kept the nation on the edge of their seats with his tense lead role in Jed Mercurio’s,Bodyguard recently, is the latest hunk to be tipped to take on the role of James Bond after Daniel Craig hangs up his speedos. It was the BBC’s biggest new drama of the decade and Madden’s breathtaking

performance attracted the attention of Bond boss Barbara Broccoli. Madden, who hit stardom for his role as ill-fated Robb Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, went on to star as Prince Charming alongside Lily James in 2015’s Cinderella. But it was his turn as PTSD suffering bodyguard David Budd that has allegedly caught the Bond supremo’s eye. The Daily Mail recently claimed sources close to

Broccoli (shouldn’t she be running a greengrocers rather than a major movie franchise!) have said “It’s looking seriously like he is going to get the job”. So, Madden, 32, has jumped ahead of Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, James Norton, Aiden Turner and Cillian Murphy, who have all been previously, tipped for the role. A list that unfortunately doesn’t include my own personal choice ….. Alan Carr!

You get the ring but I keep the porker 39

First world problems for popstar Ariane Grande, whose recent split from fiancé, Pete Davidson, after a short engagement, saw her give back the ring but gain custody of their pet micro pig, Smallz. The couple who got engaged after just weeks of dating but parted ways after five months together are still ‘planning on spending time together’. They adopted the piggie, a month before the split and Pete became so besotted with him, he had his name tattooed on his a torso. Ariane has reportedly already given Pete Davidson her engagement ring back, but 25-year-old singer will keep Smallz, according to a TMZ source. The ring, which cost £76,000, features a 3.03 carat diamond set in a platinum band. Pete got it specially made for Ariana and it took weeks to finish, but she reportedly gave the diamond ring back to Pete, 24, once she ended their relationship. Ariane has had a particularly tough time of things lately, followin g the terrorist bombing at her Manchester concert last year and the death of former boyfriend Mac Miller, who died of a suspected drug overdose in September. At least the troubled star will have her micro pig to keep her company, but may I offer a word of caution, Ariane ….. I had a friend here in Spain who bought an advertised micro pig for 50€, which subsequently grew to the size of a medium pooch. Eric the pig, however, still imagined he was micro and loved nothing more than to share the sofa, chairs and bed of his adopted parents.

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Sports & Local News

Pego Golf Society We had 37 players today for a Singles Stableford Competition. Cold, overcast day and the course, although improved, was still in poor condition with three temporary greens. We welcomed two guests, Michael Jones and Stephen Hill. The results were as follows: Division 1 First with 39 points was Malcolm Harrison, second was Brendan Young with 38 points and third Steve Boyes with 37 points. Three very fine scores!

Division 2 First with 35 points was yet again on the podium Jim Hayward with 35 points, second was Patrick Lynch also with 35 points and third was Rob Westlands with 34 points. All good scores considering the conditions. Nearest The Pin on hole 5 was Steve Patton with 3m.0 and on hole 16 Peter Rapley with 2.9m. Nobody guessed the Balls In The Water correctly (70) and a card draw saw John Nicol walk off with the

money. There was only 1 two today, Brian Barden with what I considered to be a very lucky and annoying putt! Next week is Captain’s Day, a big day in our calendar and we have a full house for Captain’s Team against Vice Captain’s Team. All players please be at the club no later that 0745 for breakfast. Lots of eats on the course provided by Anne Grethe and Elizabeth Grin. Buffet lunch afterwards as usual.

No Brotherly Love at El Cid

El Cid Club Captain Stewart Beattie set aside family loyalty as El Cid had a comfortable win against a La Siesta team containing his brother and sister-in-law. Rink 2 saw Derek Randall’s team 4 shots down after 2 ends but a 7 on the 3rd end saw El Cid take control winning the next 10 ends and go on to win by 30 shots to 13. Rink 3 was a very tight match with Clive Scott’s team winning 11 ends but still needed 2 shots to win by 1 on the 18th. On Rink 4 Pat Metcalfe and her all ladies team got off to a good start but La Siesta pulled it back to 11 – 10 after 11 ends before El Cid dug in and took the game 22 – 16. Rink 5 saw another close game at 7 – 7 after 9 ends. Helen Hall was taken ill and replaced by Ian Brown who helped his team

win 6 of the last 9 to win 18 – 10. It was looking like a 12 – 0 win for El Cid but Rink 6 saw a terrific finish. Michael Edward’s team were beating Yvonne Briden’s team 16 – 15 after17 ends but with El Cid holding 3 for a win Michael killed the head and went on to win the 19th end by 1 shot and 2 points for La Siesta. Derek Randall Winter League Captain praised all his team for a 4 Rink wins against 1 but with overall shot difference of 30 giving a 10 – 2 win. As other results arrived it means El Cid sit top of the league after 2 games by 1 point. Next week El Cid away to Monte Mar Stewart Beattie Northern League Report SPIRITED SWORDS! On Monday the Swords took on the BBC Jaguars at

El Cid. After 7 ends things were not looking good with only 1 scoring rink ahead and a 17 shot overall deficit. However the team of Betty Anderson, Hazel and Ian Brown came back from 14-2 down to win by 24-20. Also Pat Coburn, Paul Trunchion and Alan Ferrand 6-1 down after just 4 ends came through to win 22-13. Stars of the day were John Carr, Clive Bidel and Paul Whitmee taking 14 of 18 ends to win 27-5. BBC Jaguars took the Challenger and Friendly Rinks. Even here though the Swords teams came back from poor starts to be level after 12 and 13 ends respectively only to lose out in the last few ends. So the Swords took the day 8 points to 2 and by 89 shots to 65. Next week the Swords travel to take on Finca Guila.

Too Darn Hot

The Weekender’s racing tipster Andrew Atkinson hit the bookies once again with nap selection Too Darn Hot, when winning at Newmarket in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes to land the £280,000 first prize. Too Darn Hot’s tip followed in the footsteps of Arc de Triomphe winner tip Enable, and the St Leger winning tip Kew Gardens. Owner of Too Darn Hot, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wife, Lady

Lloyd Webber, said: “It’s such a relief, we’ve been really nervous, but he’s a pretty good horse.” Too Darn Hot was ridden by Italian ace jockey Frankie Dettori. The Weekender also tipped Circus Maximus, that ran third at 8-1 at Newmarket. Willie Mullins duo Low Sun 10-1 and Uradel 16-1, were both noted in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket, when landing a 1-2 for the Irish trainer.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

As the Premier League pauses for the 2nd International Break of the Season we can take an in depth look at what has happened so far in the 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League and also report on last weeks Preliminary Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition. The Fantasy League got off to a great start with no less than 6 teams tasting life at the Summit in the 1st 8 weeks. Nikki’s Liverpool 94 was fast out of the traps to be the first team at the top but it didn’t last long as the former winner of the A.F.F.L. Jeanette’s team Jin Dream Team soon took over in the 2nd week. Pauline’s Vodka Army made it 3 Lady Managers at the top in the early stages of the Season. They held on to the top spot for 2 weeks before Eric became the first Gent to reach the higher echelons when his Peaky Blinders took control. Pauline’s Vodka Army proved to be a hard team to shake off as they marched back to the Summit a week

later. Since then John’s 2 teams have dominated the proceedings as first Tarazara reached the peak followed by his other team Wee Aggies who are the current Leaders now. Two teams have shared the top spot of our Mark Carter Ladies Section and they are the present Leaders Jin Dream Team and Pauline’s Vodka Army. Both staying 4 weeks each at the Summit. William & Henry got off to a flying start in our Junior League by holding on to the top spot for the first 2 weeks then along came Jack’s team Balotellietubbies who only lasted one week before giving way to Harley’s Ginger Ninjar who took control 5 weeks ago and at the present time hold a 16 point advantage at the top. There have been 7 different teams who have been in the pole position of our Across the Costas Golden Boot League. Nikki’s Liverpool 94 started the ball rolling in the 1st week and since then the Summit has been shared between Baines on Toast, Blue

Devils, Ortolans, Wigan Champs and the two present leaders Two for the Road and Big Sam’s Army. It’s already been an actionpacked start to the Premier League with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea setting the pace which reflects on our top Fantasy League Players. Top Goalkeeper is Manchester City’s brilliant Brazilian Ederson with 36 points which is 3 more than Liverpool’s Alisson. The difference being the assist the City Lad had against Huddersfield. Both Keepers have kept 5 clean sheets. Top Defender is Chelsea’s Alonso with 45 points, most of them coming from his assists although he has managed to score this Season. Liverpool’s flying full-back Robertson is in 2nd place with 39 points to his name. Top Player so far this Season in the Fantasy League & also top Mid-fielder is Chelsea’s in-form Edin Hazard who has accrued a massive 57 points, not bad when you consider he was Sub for the 1st few games. The 2nd Mid-

Field Player is a bit of a surprise with Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser who has notched up 37 points. Top Striker is that Hardy Annual Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero with 42 points, right behind him one point away is Arsenal’s main striker Lacazette. After 8 weeks, the Premier League has provided the A.F.F.L.with 230 goals(31 more than last Season) 44 clean sheets (obviously less than last Years total of 59) 268 yellow cards (10 more than last Season) and 14 red ones which are one up on last Season. We have also had 26 penalties which are 14 more than last Season. I think the threat of V.A.R has a lot to do with it. The teams who have been awarded the most Penalties are Bournemouth with 5 and Brighton with 4 ( there must be something in that Sea Air that makes you fall down!). In last weeks Preliminary Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition there were 4 games that finished up level and they were between Kasbrane

Best(15) v Wigan Champs(15), One for the Road (21) v Moffs Magians(21), Murder on Zidancefloor(26) v Laura’s Legends(26) and Gerrards Bitch (25) v Metal Giroud is It(25). The Replays will take place this weekend. One of our top Lady Managers was dumped out of the Cup when Hup Hannah City beat Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team by 43-31. Another shock was Mike’s team Super Saints who knocked out one of the Favourites, 3rd placed Tarazara by 5131. The present Leaders Wee Aggies cruised through to the next round by seeing off Karl’s team Liverpool are Better than City by 50-31. We have had a slight problem getting all the scores up on our website but I’m sure by the time you read this it will be solved. With the Season well underway the A.F.F.L. is shaping up to be most open & exciting for Years. All our Competitions are up for grabs and we still have the F.A.Cup League to come.

Mouthy Mourinho by Alex Trelinski

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been charged over comments he made in Portuguese to a television camera after his side’s win over Newcastle. It is claimed Mourinho used “abusive, insulting or improper language” after the 3-2 comeback victory at Old Trafford on October 6th. The Football Association used a lip reader and the 55-year-old’s remarks were interpreted as offensive. Mourinho had been under pressure amid reports he would be sacked.

Marc´s big day

Spain’s Marc Marquez will have his first chance to be crowned a five-time Moto GP champion at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. After a close victory in Thailand, Honda-rider Marquez holds a 77-point lead over nearest rival Andrea Dovizioso and a

99-point advantage over Valentino Rossi, the only riders still mathematically in the title hunt with 100-points remaining. If Marquez can finish Sunday’s Motegi race with an advantage of at least 75-points he will be the 2018 champion, at Honda’s home event and with three

rounds still to go. That effectively means Marquez must focus on beating Dovizioso, the rider he fended off at the final turn in Buriram, but who won last year’s wet Motegi race after a thrilling showdown with the Repsol rider.

Preferente news

Second-placed Sant Joan won last weekend’s big local derby at Preferente Group Four leaders, CFI Alicante, to go top of the table, which sees just two points separate the top six teams. Sant Joan this weekend have a good chance to maintain their advantage as they welcome a CD Torrevieja side that is all over the place on the back of a three-one home defeat to Benferri, who now face a tough local

by Alex Trelinski

clash at home to fifth-placed CD Thader. The Rojales-based side(pictured before kickoff against Orihuela B on Sunday) made it into the playoffs 18 months ago and had a convincing home twonil home win over Orihuela to take them just one point behind Sant Joan. After their Sant Joan defeat, CFI Alicante is also a

point off the top and go to struggling Aspe, whilst CD Almoradi now occupies the second position, after beating struggling Benidorm CD, two-one. This Sunday, Almoradi make the short journey to Orihuela B, whilst second-bottom Benidorm entertains UD Horadada, who are just a couple of points above them, and who could only draw two-two with struggling UD Ilicitana.

ENGLAND’S youngest side for nearly 60 years produced a stunning Nations League performance in Sevilla on Monday night, as a strongly fancied Spain lost at home for the first time in 15 years. The result, on the back of a goalless draw in Croatia three days earlier, has breathed new life into England’s chances of making it into next year’s finals. A defeat would have seen them face the prospect of relegation from Nations League A4, but

by Alex Trelinski

they now have a shot of making into the finals, though they will have to bank on Croatia giving them a helping hand against the Spaniards on Thursday November 15th, and then beat Croatia at Wembley three days later. Coach Gareth Southgate praised a “incredibly brave” and “mature” performance as Raheem Sterling scored twice either side of a goal from Marcus Rashford in a dazzling first-half display

from England, who then held off a Spanish revival to win three-two. It was England’s first win in Spain since 1987, when Gary Lineker scored all four of their goals in a four-two victory, at the time the striker was playing for Barcelona. Spain’s captain, Sergio Ramos, Southgate’s side as “world class”, after Monday’s match, leaving England supporters convinced that their World Cup run a few months ago was far from a flash in the pan.
