A BRITISH tourist was shot in the backside as he got caught in the crossfire of a Wednesday night drugs shootout in Benidorm. The 42-year-old Brit suffered a superficial wound to his buttocks caused by

a ricochet bullet during the incident outside the Hippodrome pub on Calle Mallorca at around 11.00 pm. People fled in horror, with the mainly British tourists in the area trying to avoid being shot. Two Moroccans, including a man said to be a drugs dealer, also suffered minor wounds in what is believed to have been an argument over payments.

The shooters fled by taxi after their BMW vehicle, with a Belarus number plate, was discovered around the corner on Calle Lepanto with its wheels punctured. At the time of going to press, the National Police said that they were looking for four men who were in the taxi, and are described as Eastern European. The injured British tourist is set to fly back to the UK tomorrow.

COMIC CLOBBERED by Alex Trelinski

A COMEDIAN, who used to present on BBC local radio, has been left in an induced coma after being brutally attacked in a bar in Benidorm after a show. Jimmy Carol, 63, is seriously ill at Alicante General Hospital

after suffering a brain bleed and a broken skull, following the assault on Tuesday evening at the Good Times Bar and Bistro on Calle Lepanto. The comedian, who hosted programmes on BBC Radio Sheffield for over a decade, and has appeared at a variety of Benidorm venues like the Talk of the Town. reportedly “hit the floor already

unconscious”. His son James Everall said on Facebook that his father was targeted because he stood up to a group of men who were ‘pushing, shoving and giving aggro’ to a group of girls. Jimmy is said to have woken up briefly in a confused state before doctors decided to place him in an induced coma. Police are now hunting the man who allegedly hit Jimmy and “ran off immediately afterwards”.

Property vs Investment Portfolios

Investing in property has been popular in past years, with many people buying property to rent out as an investment. The attractions of property are clear. The UK sector has historically delivered a compelling rental yield, combined with an attractive level of capital growth over the long term. However, property is not right for everyone and here I highlight some of the main factors that should be considered. 1. Age – Once you really start getting to the later years of life, your risks start to become greater. You no longer have the luxury of investing for the long-term. For example, if you’re 80 years old, and invest in property during a property boom, in 2 years time the market may start to dip. The market may recover after 10 years and put you back into high profits. But you may no longer be around to reap the benefits. So essentially, the older you are, the shorter your opportunity becomes for a long-term investment. 2. Cost - The costs involved in buyto-let can quickly stack up and erode the returns. Buying costs, including legal fees, agency fees and survey fees, all of which are usually paid upfront need to be considered and in Spain this can be somewhere around 15%! Then you will need to find tenants or advertise the

property for holiday lets. Then you have the ongoing costs, which could include redecoration and repairs, gas and electrical appliance maintenance, buildings and contents insurance, legal insurance and the costs of complying with the various landlord regulations.

3. Tax - You should also ensure you have a firm grasp of the tax implications of purchasing a buying property as this will cause a further limit on returns. In Spain the purchasing tax is 10%, so essentially you are 10% down from day one, but there are other ongoing taxes to consider. If you have a property you rent out in Spain and live in Spain yourself, you will have to declare the income on your Spanish tax return (declaracion de la renta de las personas fisicas) every year and then of course when you sell the property you will have to consider the possible capital gains tax. 4. Lack of diversification - If you own your current home, investing in a second could leave you heavily exposed to the property market. If property prices falter, your wealth could be significantly affected. The property market is also highly illiquid, meaning a property can sit on the market for months, or even years, before a buyer is found. If you need to access your

money quickly, you could be forced to accept a lower offer than you could achieve given more time and even then, this could take some time.

We should also take into consideration the location of the property. Unlike the UK the rental yields in Spain can be as little as 2-3% gross and if you take into consideration the buying fees, often it can take over 5 years just to break even! So what if buying a property is not a suitable investment for you? What are the alterative options? Number one, leaving money in your bank can be a bad idea if you want to achieve growth. UK inflation is currently at 3% so unless your bank are paying you 3% interest (which is very unlikely) you savings are depreciating daily. So what about investing? Many people get put off by that word. They think that it is only for the experienced or for big risk takers but it really isn’t. The key to investing is getting the right advice, making sure that all of your needs and objectives are considered and that everything is explained in a simple manner that you understand. At Chorus Financial, we do just that. If a client comes to me and purchasing a property is the right thing for them, I’ll advise them of that – and if it isn’t? available, whether they just want to grow their money at the same rate of inflation or they are more aggressive investors looking for bigger growth, we make sure that it is right for them. FRIDAY 6TH JULY 2018

End of the line

One of Britain’s most wanted fugitives has been arrested in Switzerland, after spending time hiding locally in the La Manga area. Mark Acklom, who allegedly posed as an MI6 agent to con a divorcee from Gloucestershire out of her £850,000 life savings, disappeared in 2012. His face was plastered across Crimestoppers billboards across the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol in a bid to find him. The 45-year-old was eventually tracked down

released from a Spanish prison over a 200 thousand euro property fraud. The Olive Press newspaper reported that up to late last summer, Acklom was renting a property in La Manga, and had a series of ties to the Murcia region, including being involved with his Spanish wife, Maria Yolanda Ros Rodriguez, in running a newly-formed real estate company operating out of Murcia City. The couple “vanished” from La Manga last September.

to a luxury apartment in Zurich on Saturday night, and arrested, pending extradition proceedings. Carolyn Woods alleged Mr Acklom posed as an MI6 agent and Swiss banker and conned her into “lending” him her savings during a yearlong romance in Bath in 2012. Two years ago a European Arrest Warrant was issued for Acklom, and he was hiding out in Spain having been

SPAIN’s dole queues have shortened to their smallest levels in nearly a decade, according to government figures released this week. June’s unemployment total now stands at 3.16 million, the lowest number since December 2008, with 200 thousand people finding work in the last year. The figures show nearly two million more people in work, compared to the low point of the employment crisis at the start of 2013. June’s statistics showed drops in unemployment across the whole of Spain, including Alicante Province and the Murcia region, but figures continue to show younger people finding it hard to get a job.

Man survives 40 metre car plunge by Simon Russell

A young man was lucky to survive after his car fell 40 metres down a ravine and then collided with a fence. The incident happened in the early hours of Monday morning on a road at Calpe’s Serra d’Olta. Somehow the car managed to avoid the numerous pine trees off the road and the collision with the house fence probably cushioned the blow. A woman in Valencia City stabbed her teenage daughter in the back after she discovered she had been sleeping with her partner. Police sources say that the pair were having an argument in the girl’s bedroom. Somewhere during this exchange it emerged that the 16-year-old had been having an affair with her mother’s boyfriend. At this stage the girl was stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife by her mother who then immediately called the emergency services confessing what she had done. She was arrested and the teenager taken to hospital where it is reported that her injuries are not life threatening.

BBC in Benitatchell

UK public broadcaster the BBC has been in the Marina Alta town of Benitatchell to gauge the views of British expatriates on Brexit. They spoke to a number of residents including Margaret Hales, President of the British section of the European Union of Women.

She said “There are two types of British residents, those who are integrated and those who only come for a few months on vacation and leave. However all residents are getting more involved in the social and political

side of the towns they live in, Benitatchell being a great example. We greatly appreciate the efforts being made by the local council to make us feel at home.” The filming was for local news programme “Sunday Politics East” and was broadcast at the end of June.

Baby cocaine shocker

AFTER an infant boy was taken to hospital suffering from a fever, medical tests showed that the nine month old had ingested cocaine. The incident happened last weekend and the National Police have now arrested the 44-year-old father, who took the child to the hospital, on charges of crimes

against public health. They also later arrested the boy’s 39-yearold mother on charges of child abandonment. Hospital sources say that the child’s life is no longer in danger; it is unclear how the cocaine got into his bloodstream.

Bull running teen tragedy A thirteen year old boy collapsed and later died at a bull running event in the Valencian town of Massamagrell last weekend. At first there were rumours that bulls were to blame for the tragedy, but it is now clear that the boy passed out while in the crowds waiting for the event to start. Witnesses say he rose once then collapsed again and died

by Matthew Richards

several hours later in hospital. He hit his head during the fall but an autopsy had ruled this out as the cause of death, attributing the reason as cardiorespiratory arrest. Apparently the boy, named locally as Pablo, had no history of heart complaints. The event was suspended in recognition of the tragedy.

DRUNKEN BRIT SHOT WITH A TASER GUN

Police in Benidorm were forced to use a taser gun to subdue a drunken British tourist brandishing a broken bottle in a threatening manner last weekend. The incident occurred at around 6am last Saturday morning outside a bar in Calle Gerona, in the heart of the infamous ‘Guiri Zone’ or ‘English Square’. Benidorm local police officers were conducting an alcohol control checkpoint in the street, when they became aware of an altercation involving a group of drunken Brits and security staff from a bar on the street. On further investigation they saw a young man holding a broken bottle by the neck threatening one of the doormen. As soon as he realised the officers were moving

by Andy Mansell

in to break up the exchange, the young man fled the scene, followed by the police shouting for him to stop. Ignoring the warnings and still carrying the broken bottle, the suspect tried to enter another bar further along the street, but was prevented by doorstaff. The young man, barred from

entry, became agitated and began to threaten the staff by brandishing the broken glass wildly in their direction. By the time the pursuing police officers arrived at the scene, he was grappling with one of the doormen on the floor, still holding the makeshift weapon. Believing the member of staff’s life was in danger, one of the officers took aim with his taser gun and shot the Brit, who dropped the

bottle, allowing them to disarm and apprehend him. The arrested man, aged 20, who remains unnamed, continued to resist arrest and made several attempts to escape the officers before he was eventually transferred to a patrol car. He was taken into custody, where he remains, pending arrest proceedings, whilst the doorman was treated for injuries sustained during the incident.

Million euro drugs haul found in van AN HISTORIC trial started this week in Madrid with an 85-year-old man facing charges of stealing a newborn baby in what was said to be a frequent practice during the years of iron-fist rule by dictator, General Franco. The aim of Franco’s policy was to punish leftwing Republicans who opposed him in the Civil War, and starting in 1940, a decree allowed the state to take children into custody if their “moral formation” was at risk. From the fifties onwards, doctors, nurses, nuns and priests took babies born out of wedlock, or newborns from poor families, from maternity wards and gave them to couples close to the Franco regime, who in many cases were infertile. On Tuesday, Eduardo Vela, a former obstetrician at Madrid’s San Ramon hospital, became the first

by Andy Mansell

person to be hauled to court over the scandal, that caused outrage across Spain when it first came to official light at the start of the century. The ex-medic is suspected

of having taken part in the 1969 theft of Ines Madrigal, now aged 49. Madrigal, who lives in Murcia City, and who leads the region’s stolen babies support group, accuses him of having forged her birth certificate so that

her adoptive mother, who has since passed away, appeared as her biological parent. Tens of thousands of others are said to be in Madrigal’s position, with around two thousand court complaints filed so far.

The hitman Woodland escapes and her car fire A WOMAN who offered to pay a hitman up to 12 thousand euros to kill the new girlfriend of her expartner, has got off with a two-year jail sentence. The case at Elche came to court 11 years after she “hired” the man, and the hearing handed her 24 months behind bars, despite prosecutors initially calling for seven years. Because it was a first offence, the Pilar de la Horadada woman will not have to serve any prison time, helped by the fact that the case has rumbled on for over a decade. No names or nationalities were declared in the Alicante Provincial Court hearing, which heard

by Alex Trelinksi

that the jealous woman got wind of her ex-boyfriend’s then-new partner in 2007, and was recommended to go to a Murcia City nightclub where the potential hitman worked at the weekend. Her hired hand though was no hitman with no killing agenda, and he simply spilled the beans to his intended target, who then went straight to the police. The disinterested “hitman” never actually gave evidence at the trial, with only the defendant and the victim giving testimony, as the slow wheels of Spanish justice eventually creaked to a conclusion.

AN ALMORADI fire crew prevented a car blaze from spreading to adjoining woodland in Benejúzar last Monday afternoon. The incident happened in the Ermita de la Pilarica area of the town, and though burning

a nearby tree, the fiirefighters brought the flames under control. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed. Earlier on Monday crews tackled a blaze in a

forest at Torreagüera on the border of the Murcia region and Alicante Province, Specialist forest firefighters were drafted in

from Guardamar in addition to using a helicopter in what turned out to be a successful operation to stop the fire spreading.

Cheaper movies just the ticket THE controversial rise in IVA on cinema tickets brought in five years ago has now been reversed, with the rate being reduced from 21% to 10% as of last Thursday, 5 July. Unsurprisingly the Federation of Cinemas (FECE) expressed

by Neil Mortimer

satisfaction at the measure. They said that many cinemas, big and small, had done their best to avoid passing on the original increase to customers, something that made life difficult for them financially.

FECE said it was now up to its individual members how the IVA reduction would affect ticket prices for movie goers. A leading consumer association said that if the full saving was passed on the public will see a reduction in ticket prices of €0.66 on average.

Gruesome dog’s dinner AFTER a man died in the northern Valencian town of Nules his pet dogs ate large parts of his corpse, the Guardia Civil have

revealed this week. The remains of the unnamed individual were badly decomposed but

everything appears to indicate he died of natural causes. The advanced state of the decomposition indicates he had been dead for some

time, and the dogs had no food source which was why they acted as they did. An autopsy is being conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Freak tragedy by Alex Trelinksi

A British man’s eight-month-old baby was killed in a bizarre accident after her family’s van reportedly ran over her pram in the Catalunya region on Saturday morning. The girl was knocked over by the van in Premia de Dalt, 18 miles north of Barcelona. While the youngster was in her pram near a children’s playground, her older sibling was in the ‘parked’ van, according to initial reports. It is thought the vehicle’s handbrake wasn’t on when it accidentally ran over the baby’s pram at around 8.00 am killing her. Her mother, a 35-yearold German national, was injured and taken to hospital after trying to save her child’s life. The town, where the couple lived for some time, declared two days of mourning following the tragedy, and suspended the annual Premia de Dalt festival.

Saving the whales THE strip of the Mediterranean Sea known as the cetacean corridor has been declared a marine protected zone. The corridor runs along the Costa Blanca and is a migratory route for many species of whales and dolphins as well as other rare creatures such as turtles. The route comes particularly close to the Marina Alta coastline and sightings of creatures such as fin whales

by Simon Russell

and bottlenose dolphins are common off Denia and Javea. The protection decree, issued by the Ecology Ministry in Madrid, means that anything such as oil exploration which would disturb the cetaceans will be prohibited. Noise as well as pollution can upset the marine giants, sometimes causing them to go off course when

travelling, even resulting in them beaching themselves in extreme cases. Ecology groups are cheering the decision, with Greenpeace saying that “this is great news, backed up by very solid science.” A WWF spokesman said it welcomed the news, but now Spain needed to do more about restricting heavy marine traffic and consider extending protected areas.

Robbers rumbled

A LITHUANIAN gang that robbed at least 16 shops in a week across Alicante Province, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja. The all-male trio pilfered from outlets in Alicante City, San Vicente del Raspeig, Elche, Torrevieja, and the Orihuela Costa, and have been charged with 16 counts of theft, as well as two of belonging to a criminal gang.

Green light for bridge builders by Simon Russell

The Guardia managed to recover almost three thousand euros-worth of items that had been taken in two robberies. The alleged crooks lived together and would carefully research shops that they would steal from, and they concentrated on mobile phone and computer equipment, but would also go

back to basics by stealing food. After robbing a store, the trio would separate so that they could not be all arrested, which ended up being the case for a 48-yearold member of the gang, as he was detained in his getaway vehicle. The Guardia found items that

been taken from seven shops and also equipment used to disable security systems. The man was brought up before a judge, and granted bail. Two days later, his colleagues were caught, and also bailed after their court appearance.

THE tender to reconstruct the new Triana Bridge in Javea has been awarded to Levantina Ingenieria y Construccion after they put in a bid of €400,000 to carry out the long awaited project. The bridge was damaged in flooding over a decade ago with various issues causing the long delays in the work commencing. Mayor Jose Chulvi has said that the work will not start until after the summer months to minimise traffic disruption. However the council have asked the contractor to ensure that non-disruptive works such as moving materials on site is done in advance to ensure a prompt start in the autumn. Since the flood damage the bridge has been closed to HGV’s, buses and other heavy vehicles.

No cars for school run GANDIA has been piloting a scheme where many streets close to schools are closed to encourage pupils to walk to school and also to make it safer for those who choose to do so. The scheme was run briefly at the end of June as the school year finished and many parents approved of the idea. However some weren’t so keen on the concept, especially those who have no choice but to drive their kids in. Not all families live within walking distance of their school, while some parents or children may have mobility issues. Some also said that the experiment was fine in June but may not work so well on a soaking wet day in the winter.

Feeling the heat THE Valencian Ministry of Health issued its first heat warnings of the year earlier this week as temperatures threatened to hit the 40 degree mark in some parts of the Community. Orange heat warnings were issued for the regions of La Costera and Ribera Alta, which consists of mainly inland towns such as Xativa and Sellent and often registers the highest temperatures over the summer. An Orange Alert is a high level and is aimed in particular at warning vulnerable groups and their carers such as the elderly, very ill and infants. General advice for all is to avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day, wear baggy light coloured clothing and a hat. In the house close the blinds and lower awnings if you have them. Diet-wise, try to cut back on hot food and alcohol, drink lots of water and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. The coastal areas have seen high temperatures but not as high as inland Valencia while there has also been a regular breeze. However sensible precautions still need to be taken, especially among the more vulnerable and guests over on holiday who may not be as used to the sun.

Life saving heroes TEN dockworkers were among 21 people arrested this week as part of a major drug trafficking operation that focused on the port of Algeciras. The Guardia Civil seized 480 kilos of cocaine that the “cabal of corrupt stevedores” as the police described them was smuggling out of the port in backpacks. Algeciras is one of the busiest ports in Spain and believed to be one of the major gateways for the entrance of cocaine into Europe. Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Columbia and Morocco all have links to the investigation

by Alex Trelinski

and the trafficking gang. It is thought that most of the drugs have been arriving on some of the thousands of containers that enter the port. After being smuggled out by the dockers a sophisticated transport network was moving the cocaine all over Spain and Europe. In this instance the 480 kilo haul of cocaine was hidden in the machinery of a stevedore’s truck, vehicles that are not subject to the same level of scrutiny by customs as other parts of the dock.

Ambulance action AMBULANCE staff across the Valencian Community went on “indefinite strike”on Monday in protest at working conditions, but emergencies are being covered across the region. SAMU emergency services are being maintained at 100 percent, but it is the area of non-essential transport that is being hit. The strike was called by the UGT union over what they said was a “breach of faith” by ambulance bosses over the negotiation of staff work contracts. The UGT claim that their

by Alex Trelinski

1,800 members have not been treated fairly, and need a reduced working day, with a guarantee of no salary cuts. The CCOO union added that ambulance drivers are amongst the lowest paid of any driver in Spain. On their part, Valencian bosses said that terms of previous agreements are being kept to, and that they would like to “resume normal negotiations”. They also regretted the inconvenience that the strike was causing to members of the public.

Doggies Delayed DOG OWNERS wanting to take their pets to two newly designated beaches in Torrevieja have been told to wait for a few more days. After long campaigns, beaches at Punta Margalla and Cala del Moro, can have dogs on them, following the success of similar areas further north at Santa Pola and Alicante. But final preparations had yet to be completed as of

by Alex Trelinski

last weekend, including the erection of signs. which led to the local police clearing some dog owners from one of the beaches, after getting a complaint from bathers. Beaches councillor, Javier Manzanares, said that he regretted what had happened and that it was just a “matter of days” before the dogfriendly areas were opened.

Forced into prostitution NINE WOMEN who were forced into prostitution at brothels in Alicante Province and the Murcia region, have been rescued by the National Police. An operation started in February to bring down a sex trafficking gang that would exploit young Columbian and Venezuela females, with 17 gang members arrested. They were either Spanish, Columbian, or Venezuelan. The women were promised good jobs in Spain working in the domestic or caring sectors, but once they had all their travel expenses

Manzanares confirmed that he had received a petition opposing the dog beaches, but stated that when Santa Pola opened their facility over two years ago, there were similar concerns, which quickly disappeared. To the south of Torrevieja, there has been no movement from Orihuela council following a pledge made two years ago to have a dog beach on the Orihuela Costa.

by Neil Mortimer

paid, they would arrive at AlicanteElche airport, and be taken to brothels that they were forced to work at in the Elche, Torrevieja, and Los Montesinos areas. Six properties were raided by the National Police, who were alerted to the gang five months ago, when a victim of the sex trafficking was discovered in the Cartagena area. Money, documents, and equipment was seized, including a card payment machine used by “clients”. The nine victims are being cared for by a specialist organisation, the APRAMP, that helps women that have been exploited as prostitutes.

THANKS to a pioneering new technique an Elche hospital has been able to almost double the amount of cornea transplants carried out in the last four years. The new technique involves only using a small part of the donor cornea so that one tissue part can be used on up to four patients rather than just one as before. As this is a system under trial, Elche General Hospital had to gain permission from the Ministry of Health to use the new technique. This period has now come to an end but clinicians have judged the system so successful that they have asked that they can carry on using it for cornea transplants. A surgeon explained how the transplantsystem currently works; when a donated cornea arrives it is examined for suitability and then compared to people on the waiting list to maximise the number of recipients who often have different requirements. The current waiting list is down to four months, low for this type of very specialised surgery.

Quarter at risk of poverty ALTHOUGH the amount of people classed as being at risk of poverty across Spain has dropped, in the Valencian Community the figure has continued to rise. The latest data by the National Institute of Statistics shows that nationally the figure dropped from 22.3% to 21.6% compared to last year. Across Valencia it rose from 24.4% to 25.6%, pushing the figure

by Simon Russell

over a quarter of all people for the first time. The figure is measured on inequality rather than absolute poverty, showing that the distribution of wealth here is becoming increasingly unequal. This haves and have nots system generates social unrest and numerous other problems the wider it becomes, said economic commentators.

Dummy run A BRAZILIAN woman who tried to hide three kilos of cocaine in the lining of her hand luggage, was arrested by the Guardia Civil at AlicanteElche airport, after what may have been a “test run” to check out security procedures. The passenger came in on a domestic flight from Madrid, which gave the luggage the all-clear as it went through the scanners at the facility. Investigators discovered

by Alex Trelinski

that the woman had no previous criminal record, and charged her with a crime against public health, and she was denied bail. One theory being pursued is that the drug traffickers were using her for a dummy run to see how strict the security is during the busy summer months at Alicante-Elche airport.

By George - champagne and topless dancers in Benidorm! It’s almost 50 years ago that octogenarian George Stanhope hit the town of Benidorm with his wife Brenda - in a star studded champagne evening - that holds lifetime memories. “It’s as if it was just yesterday when I was just 36 years old, living it up in Benidorm,” said George. Ex pat George, who emigrated to Spain from Manchester 14 years ago, and his sweetheart Brenda, 77, moved to Los Montesinos, Alicante, in 2004. “The trip to Benidorm in 1974 was to see Jose Montez, Spain’s famous flamenco dancer. The most famous in Spain at the time,” said George. “The sweat used to fly off José you got wet through!,” said George. George and Brenda jetted to Spain from Luton airport to go to Granada, the now demolished night club in Benidorm, having been closed in the late seventies. “Sitting at our table, with champagne on ice, was fantastic,” said George. “Once empty, another bottle of champagne arrived, without asking,” said George. Benidorm has changed dramatically over the years, reflected George: “In the seventies there wasn’t that many hotels. “We stayed at the Rio Park Hotel, which is still there today. We walked from the Rio, through the lemon groves, down to the sea.” George and Brenda, who visit Benidorm frequently, remain in love with one of Spain’s leading resorts: “It’s one of our favourite places,” said

That sinking feeling Shark sighting

A report by prestigious science magazine “Nature” has said that Alicante is one of the five Spanish cites most vulnerable to the effects of global warming. Spain in general is one of the places most likely to suffer from rising ocean levels because so much of their population live by the coast. The major municipalities identified sit on the coast at less than 6 metre above sea level, with Santa Cruz, Bilbao, Santander and Las Palmas all joining Alicante on the unenviable list. Researchers have calculated that the oceans have risen by 7.6mm in the last 25 years and this process is speeding up as global warming melts the

High speed success THE AVE high speed trainservice has been celebrating its fifth anniversary in operation, a period which has seen it carry almost 10 million passengers. The Alicante-Madrid route has proven the most popular,

by Simon Russell

accounting for 70% of all journeys. The AVE also stops at Cuenca, Albacete and Villena. Over 2 million people took the fast train last year, showing steady

growth with 42,000 more passengers than 2016. The RENFE operated service has seen a travel revolution for the route, with three times as many people travelling between Alicante and Madrid by train than

a quarter of the population lives in conurbations less than 20 metres below sea level, over twice the global average. plane, the only previous high speed option. Most popular travel days are Fridays and Saturdays, a combination of weekend breaks, commuters and general travel. The average speed of the AVE is 225 km/hour as opposed to the shade under 100km/hour of the train it replaced in 2013.

Unique footage has been released of the moment an endangered great white shark was spotted off the coast of Mallorca, a species not spotted in the area for over three decades. The five metre great white, its fin clear to see, repeatedly weaved from side to side as the researchers watched it in awe. “We saw a black fin and straight away could see it was a very big shark,” cameraman Fernando LopezMirones told the El Pais newspaper. “ T h e conditions in the sea were amazing and we had the specimen around three metres from the boat, and we could watch

it up close for 70 minutes.” Although the sharks are native to the Mediterranean, they are normally associated with the oceans off South Africa, Australia and the US. The first officially recorded sighting in the Mediterranean for at least 30 years excited the research team because the creatures – which can bite humans who get too close – are officially at risk of extinction.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, cited low morale, low wages and her colleagues leaving as mitigating factors in her leaving the NHS. She told The London Economic that although she knew it was never going to be the best paid career, she thought it would be worthwhile and ‘make a difference’. ‘Sadly, it got to the point where my morale was so low, I couldn’t take it anymore,’ she said. ‘Lots of my colleagues were leaving the profession, going home [to their country of origin] or joining [private] nursing companies.’ ‘There weren’t enough nurses on

the ward, so we couldn’t do our jobs very well. Patients would just complain at us all day because they weren’t getting the attention they needed.’ When a new Lidl opened up down her road she applied and got the job and now doesn’t even have to pay for parking, like she had to do when working at a hospital. She added: ‘The best thing is my hours are a lot more sociable. Pay is around the same level, but I get ten per cent off my shopping and I’ve sold my car, which saves a lot of money. Overall I’m slightly better off, but I have much, much less stress.’ Lidl’s graduate managers earn an average salary of £36,842 compared to a newly qualified nurse getting £23,023, according to job website Indeed.

CAR GIANT’S JOBS FEAR The UK Government has been accused of playing “Russian roulette” with tens of thousands of jobs following a warning from car giant Jaguar Land Rover over the impact of a hard Brexit. The company said it urgently needs “greater certainty” on Brexit to continue to invest heavily in the UK and safeguard suppliers, customers and 40,000 Britishbased jobs. Dr Ralf Speth(pictured) chief executive of JLR, said the company’s “heart and soul” is in the UK, but added:“We and our partners in the supply chain face an unpredictable future if the Brexit negotiations do not maintain free and frictionless trade with the EU and unrestricted access to the single market.”

Strikes and storms cancel thousands of flights Staff shortages in the UK and Germany also contributed to the problems while the French air traffic control strikes had a major impact on flights across Europe. Ryanair CEO Kenny Jacobs said that over 200,000 passengers saw

their flights cancelled and has called for action by the EU Commission to help mitigate the problem as the summer season proper gets underway. Thunderstorms across parts of Europe also led to problems, with Easyjet saying over a thousand of their flights were cancelled or badly delayed.

“A bad Brexit deal would cost Jaguar Land Rover more than £1.2 billion profit each year.” The warning from the country’s biggest car maker follows similar statements from BMW and Airbus and comes ahead of a crucial meeting of the Cabinet at Chequers today to finalise a white paper on Brexit. Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite, said: “Tens of thousands of decent jobs are being put at risk by a Government who is playing with jobs as if it is a game of Russian roulette”. Shadow business secretary Rebecca Long Bailey said: “This stark warning from one of the jewels in the crown of British automotive manufacturing should be a klaxon call to Theresa May and her Cabinet.” The Prime Minister today hopes to get approval for a new Customs plan that will satisfy all the different factions of her split Cabinet.

Black days for olive growers SALES of Spanish black olives in the USA have fallen by 40% this year, largely brought about by trade tariffs imposed by the US government. Black olives are a staple as a pizza topping in the US, and until recent years most were shipped over from Spain, especially the Andalucian region. Some local growers there have been crippled by the

sudden change as their main market was the US; in some smaller towns the export of black olives is their principal industry. Americans are now turning to Californian olives for their pizza toppings and sandwich fillings as they become the cheaper option. The tariffs were imposed after Californian growers

accused the Spanish market of “dumping” produce, a practice that involves selling something at below market price and, they allege, made possible with EU subsidies. Spanish growers have denied this, saying their produce is cheaper as their working practices are more efficient than their Californian counterparts and the climate more suitable.

Pensions Are YOU losing out?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

There were two articles featured in the Daily Mail last week about UK pensions, highlighting some of the problems that the pension freedom reforms introduced in April 2015 have created. Some have led to customers losing money and excessive fees being levelled by some UK pension companies on drawdown. The UK pensions watchdog found that the reforms, which gave over 55s greater control over their pension savings (Personal Pensions and Defined Contribution pensions), have led to some placing their money in cash accounts where they get eaten up by inflation, and others taking risks in the stock market without getting financial advice. The FCA found that 60% of consumers not taking advice about drawdown were either “not sure or only had a vague idea”

of where their money was invested plus a third of consumers were “wholly invested in cash with around half of these likely to be losing out on income in retirement”. The FCA estimates some drawdown customers could receive 37% more retirement income from their pot every year by investing in a mix of financial assets - such products typically hold stocks, bonds and property - rather than cash. It assumed an asset mix of 50% equities, 20% government bonds, 20% corporate bonds, 7% property and 3% cash. Usually customers enter drawdown to get their lump sum, without understanding what happens to the balance of their pension fund - which sometimes ends up in a cash fund that won’t give them any investment growth at all. The best nutrition for your backyard chickens

PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES Seven puppies, 2 boys and 5 girls, have been found and are in the care of ARC. They are approximately 7 to 8 weeks old. They have all been wormed, treated for fleas, and had their 1st injections. All gorgeous playful little guys with their own personalities.

MOOEY

He is now 9 months old. He was found when he was 6 weeks old in a suitcase, together with 6 brothers and sisters and his mum. They had been dumped by the basura bins. Mooey is the last of the litter and really needs his own forever home. He is very playful and loves attention. He has a sweet nature, is gentle and will make a lovely pet. Also, many other dogs, cats & kittens needing homes. No adoption fee but a donation is always appreciated. Food and donations also urgently needed and can be left at ARC’s charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1, Jalon between 10 am & 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday.

(BPT) - Raising backyard chickens has been a growing trend in the United States over the past several years. Consumers crave choice in their family’s diet, which often includes food they have grown or raised themselves. Raising a backyard flock helps consumers have more control over the eggs their family eats, but bringing home chicks for a backyard flock is just the beginning.

The happiest backyard chickens have the healthiest diets, and the best eggs come from hens eating the most nutritious feed. Today, we are increasingly focused on the impact food has on our family’s health. Hobbyists like to feed their flock the way they feed themselves: non-GMO, organic, soy-free, omega-free and all natural.

is one of the main reasons people choose to raise backyard chickens. There are 2.9 million households in the U.S. raising chickens, and 62 percent of backyard hobbyists anticipate adding to their flock in the next three years. Raising chickens is a way to extend food supply, and hobbyists don’t plan to scale back. Knowledge Is Power: Going More than Skin Deep on Acne Scarring (BPT) - Acne, even when it’s mild, can result in scarring. In fact, at least 40% of people with acne also have scars. But along with acne and scars come inevitable questions: Who is at risk for scarring, and what can be done to prevent it? What’s the tipping point to schedule a visit to the dermatologist? And most importantly, why won’t these pesky blemishes just go away? The entire process can be emotional, confusing and overwhelming. In an effort to “breakdown breakouts,” New York City dermatologist Dr. Josh Zeichner, a leading acne researcher and expert advisor for Galderma Laboratories, offers the following guidance: “First and foremost, you’re not alone,” states Dr. Zeichner. “So many of my patients come in for acne - from one-off breakouts to cystic.” Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans

annually and approximately 85% of young people. Treating brown marks as if they’re scars? Take a closer look: it could actually just be hyperpigmentation. “Inflammation after a breakout revs up pigment production as part of the normal healing process of the skin, creating a dark spot that is frequently mistaken for a scar,” Dr. Zeichner says. “Those with lighter complexions may be left with marks that are red or purple in color.”True scars are broken down into two categories: depressed and raised.”Depressed scars are ‘pits’ in the skin and also referred to as atrophic scars,” adds Dr. Zeichner. “When speaking to a dermatologist, keep an ear out for words like ‘boxcar,’ ‘icepick’ and ‘rolling.’ These are all specific types of depressed scars.” “Raised scars are more common on the back and chest. You may hear a dermatologist refer to them as ‘hypertrophic,’” notes Dr. Zeichner. Take notice of the other kinds of “scars” that may result from treating acne. When

treating acne scars, individuals have reported feeling embarrassment or low self-esteem (41%), frustration/ anger/sadness (31%) and an affect on their professional lives (22%). “There are powerful psychological and emotional effects from acne that should be acknowledged and addressed accordingly,” says Dr. Zeichner. “Pay attention to your feelings and don’t keep it inside if you need to talk to a friend, family member or your doctor.” Concerned about scarring? Nip it in the bud, and leave it to the pros. “Early, aggressive and appropriate treatment of acne is important as it may effectively decrease the risk of developing acne scarring to begin with,” stresses Dr. Zeichner. “Everyone’s skin is different, and visiting a dermatologist

will help establish a personalized plan of action.”Above all, always remember that with the right tools, acne can be a manageable, treatable condition. The best path forward is to get a clear understanding of one’s acne from a dermatologist, who can help develop a customized treatment regimen. Not only are there trusted prescription treatments

proven to fight existing and prevent future acne, but new research is also on the horizon demonstrating how treatment can help reduce the risk of acne scarring. Net-net, don’t lose hope! Tackling acne early and quickly using powerful ingredients will lead the way to clearer, healthier skin.

There’s plenty of traction despite the lack of an all-wheel drive version and body roll is well-controlled through corners. It’s also available with useful convenience features like adaptive cruise control that stops and starts in traffic jams. Peugeot has foregone the basic Access specification for the 3008, instead offering all cars with a generous level of standard equipment including a fully-

Prices are slightly higher than its rivals, but the extra money buys some worthwhile gear – particularly the beautiful, clear digital instrument binnacle. The good level of equipment and stylish cabin make the 3008 stand out, plus driving dynamics and refinement are excellent.

WORK to upgrade one of the busiest roads in Alicante Province into a dual carriageway is on schedule to start this autumn, after 60 farmers have had land bought from them. The CV-865

the existing stretch of dual carriageway towards Santa Pola. The Valencian government has made compulsory land purchase orders from 60 farms, and a bicycle lane will also feature

as part of the eightkilometre project. The CV-865 is one of the notorious blackspots in Alicante Province throughout the year, but gets exceptionally busy during the summer months.

TOUR DE FRANCE champion, Chris Froome, goes into tomorrow’s first day of the 2018 race, a happy and cleared man, after doping smears against the British ace were finally wiped out this week. Froome was cleared of giving an adverse analytical finding for salbutamol, meaning he retains his 2017 Veulta a Espana title. An initial test showed that he provided a sample twice the maximum permitted dosage of Salbutamol during the Vuelta, and authorities

by Alex Trelinski

launched disciplinary proceedings earlier this year. The Union Cycliste Internationale issued a statement on Monday to announce that the four-time Tour de France winner Froome has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Froome will once again lead Team Sky in their Tour challenge, with Welsh duo Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe among the support riders. The Brit is bidding to move level with Eddy

Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain as the only fivetime winners of the Tour. Having also won last year’s Vuelta a Espana, just a month after his fourth Tour success, Froome could also equal the record for a fourth Grand Tour win in a row. Froome says he wants to make “history” by achieving both feats, adding: “I am under no illusion about the challenge, but I am feeling ready and I couldn’t ask for a better team to support me.”

LEWIS HAMILTON is looking for an extraordinary fifthstraight Silverstone to pocket his sixth British Grand Prix at the circuit this Sunday, after failing to finish last weekend’s Austrian GP at Spielberg. It’s tight at the top with Sebastian Vettel just a point clear of the 33-year-old Brit in the standings, but Hamilton loves Silverstone, and the support he gets there. “There is no other driver on the grid that gets what I get here [Silverstone] at any

by Alex Trelinski

other Grand Prix and that is something really special,” he said after a record-equalling fifth pole position at the circuit last year. Mercedes should dominate this weekend, but they come into the race reeling from a nightmare in Austria, which saw no points scored as both cars retired. Strategy errors, worn-out tyres and both cars suffering failures led Hamilton to label

Spielberg “the worst race I can remember for a very, very long time”. Mercedes have admitted they are still not completely certain Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will avoid grid penalties this weekend following those failures in Austria. Earlier in the season, Hamilton had to take a five-place drop for April’s race in Bahrain, due to an unscheduled gearbox change following a hydraulics leak in the seasonopening Australian GP.

Your Weekend Starts Here!

Sport ALL SET FOR SWEDEN

DID ENGLAND coach Gareth Southgate’s mind flashback to 1996 for even a second on Tuesday night, as his side won their first-ever World Cup penalty shoot-out? A Saturday Swedish showdown was booked just over 22 years on from the ex-defender missing his spot kick in the Euro 96 semi-final shoot-out against the Germans at Wembley. Back then, the likes of coach Terry Venables consoling the distressed player left an everlasting

by Alex Trelinski

impression for everybody who saw those emotional and depressing scenes. Southgate must have thought back to that fateful night on Tuesday, as his young charges held their nerve for a deserved win against a cynical Columbian outfit that looked out of place in this entertaining tournament. He now has a World Cup quarter-final against Sweden to look forward to this Saturday afternoon(4.00pm,

BBC 1) and Southgate’s enthusiasm with the players, media, and supporters alike is a joy to behold. This has not been seen in the England camp since the Venables era, with the 47-year-old coach clearly absorbing and learning all those years ago. It could all have been so different, with Big Sam Allardyce in charge. His sacking two months into the job, after being trapped in a newspaper “sting”, opened the door for the FA to take

a punt on Southgate, who had been making waves with running the U-21 side. Fate is a strange old thing! The winners of tomorrow’s England/ Sweden clash will take on the victors of Russia/ Croatia in the semi-finals next Wednesday evening.. This Friday’s quarters see a good-looking French side play Uruguay in the afternoon kick-off, whilst the evening clash has Brazil pitted against Belgium. Their semi will be on Tuesday night.
