Your Weekend Starts Here!

GET READY TO COUGH UP! SPAIN is vetoing plans over British nationals having visa-free travel throughout the EU after Brexit in a continuing row over Gibraltar. It would mean British travellers could have to pay £52 (€60) for a visa to visit an EU member state for less than 90 days, and that in theory could start in a few weeks if the UK leaves the EU at the end of March without a deal. UK government sources said they were confident that the legislation would go through and that British nationals would not be required to pay for a visa. The proposed deal, already recommended by EU ministers, is awaiting ratification in the European Parliament, and would mean a visa would not be necessary and UK nationals would then need to pay £7(€10) for three years visa-free travel after 2021. Before 2021, there would be no need for a visa to visit any EU country, even if the UK crashed out without a Brexit deal. But the European Parliament

by Alex Trelinski

threw the matter back to EU ministers on Wednesday, after Spain brought up the issue of Gibraltar and insisted the territory was described as a ‘colony’ in the agreement presented to parliamentarians. It is the third time the member states’ proposal has been sent back by MEPs and casts doubt over whether the legislation can be salvaged in the next few weeks, though the timetable could change if the UK seeks an extension of Article 50.

Investment Choices – where should you begin? The world of investing can be very complex and confusing. Making the right investment choices, however, is absolutely paramount to ensuring your long term financial goals can be met. Most people seek a professional Financial Adviser or a Discretionary fund manager to select and manage their investments, but it is always good (and sometimes interesting) to getting a better understanding of the main areas of investing. Three main possibilities when investing are: • • •

Each must bear a relatively stable rate of return relationship to the other for the economy to function. Let’s look at how they compare. Cash Deposits Deposits generally yield less than fixed interest securities for a similar degree of risk, and rarely achieve much real growth over time once the tax is taken into account, but funds can be accessed more easily.

TWO CUBAN robbers who stole from a British couple at Alicante-Elche airport have been arrested by National Police border officers. It was revealed that the men had been detained no less than 25 times previously across Spain for similar offences. Officers smelt something fishy when they noticed a badly parked car outside the terminal building with a nervous looking driver. A check on the number plate revealed that the vehicle had been involved with previous crimes, and agents decided to see where the car would go to. Minutes later, the vehicle approached a second man who was running with a woman´s bag in his hands, and that´s when the police swooped. The bag had 900 pounds sterling inside it as well as mobile phones and personal documents, which was returned to the owners. They told the police that at first they did not realised that the bag was missing, after the two Cuban men had talked to them in what was a distraction robbery. by Alex Trelinski

Restaurant

after Food poisoning

death

...The 46 year old ate there with her husband and son last Saturday afternoon. All three later started vomiting and had diarrhoea; while the two males recovered the woman died on Sunday. The Ministry of Health has spoken to 49 customers who dined at the restaurant around the same time as the incident occurred and 18 have said they suffered diarrhoea and vomiting for about a 24 hour period. Early speculation is that a poisonous mushroom was the cause, but the Ministry have said it is too early to even say with certainty that food served in the establishment is to blame for the tragedy. The restaurant has been identified in the press as Riff, a high end eatery with one Michelin star close to the bullring and main shopping streets. The proprietor and head chef Bernd Knoller released a statement saying “I have collaborated with the Ministry of Health and provided them with all they have asked for.” He went on to say that he hopes the matter is soon cleared up while the Ministry confirmed that the establishment will remain closed until “the safety of customers and staff can be guaranteed.” On Riff’s website they describe themselves as a Mediterranean restaurant specialising in local fish and vegetables. They also say “We are delighted to take into account customers slight intolerances, aversions and food allergies. If those are really deadly please bear in mind we cannot be held responsible”

ROCKY INCIDENT A SPANISH warship with its guns manned ordered commercial ships to leave British Gibraltar waters, the territory’s government said. Royal Navy ships were deployed in response to the incident on Sunday. The Spanish warship’s crew can be heard in an audio recording of a radio exchange telling ships anchored at Gibraltar to “leave Spanish territorial waters”. Commercial boats which were told to move were ordered to remain by the Gibraltar Port Authority.

by Andy Mansell

The actions of the Spanish navy were branded “foolish” by a spokesman for Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar. The spokesman added: “There is only nuisance value to these foolish games being played by those who don’t accept unimpeachable British sovereignty over the waters around Gibraltar, as recognised by the whole world in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”

Nonagenarian in fire tragedy

A 94 year old woman died on Sunday from burns suffered during a stove fire in San Vicente del Raspeig (Alicante). Emergency services were called out at lunchtime and the victim was treated at the scene but sadly

died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. The Fire Consortium said that the blaze broke out on the ground floor and two neighbours were able to remove the woman from the house, one of who received minor burns while helping.

Formal Protest The UK Government has made a formal protest to the Spanish Government over the actions of Spanish Navy patrol boat in British Gibraltar territorial waters last Sunday. The UK Government initially played down the incident, insisting there was no incursion despite the Chronicle publishing a recording of the radio exchange between the

Spanish warship and the two merchant ships. But after the Spanish Government itself confirmed that its vessel had issued order to ships “in Spanish territorial waters adjacent to the Rock”, the UK Government stepped up its response. On Monday, the UK ambassador to Madrid, Simon Manley, raised the incident with Spanish Government.

Rajoy´s public Always working return AN OFF-DUTY Guardia Civil officer, who was travelling with his family, arrested a 35-yearold Spaniard who was about to rob a Valencia region service station, and was wanted on a sexual assault charge. The agent spotted a speeding car with blurred number plates in Massanassa, and phoned in a report.

by Simon Russell

SPAIN´S ex-prime minister Mariano Rajoy, who was in power when Catalunya´s government tried to secede in 2017, will testify in the highprofile trial of separatist leaders this coming Tuesday. It will be Rajoy´s first highprofile public appearance since he was ousted from power in a confidence vote last spring, and since then he returned to his old job of as a property registrar in Santa Pola, and lives with his family in Alicante. The Supreme Court said other witnesses who will testify next week include Catalonia’s former president Artur Mas and Spain’s former deputy prime minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. Inigo Urkullu, the president of the Basque Country who acted as a mediator during the crisis in October 2017, will also appear in court next week. The announcement came as the 12 defendants continued to be questioned at Madrid’s Supreme Court in a trial for rebellion and other offences, with the hearings expected to last until May.

by Simon Russell

The speedster then parked up at a petrol station, with the officer deciding to park up close to the outlet to see what was going on. The suspiciouslooking motorist left his car, and the agent spotted that he had concealed a large part of his face and had taken an object out of his car.

Suspecting that he was about to rob the station, the Guardia officer went inside the station shop, and after identifying himself, frisked the suspect and discovered he had a knife on him. He was then detained as a background check revealed that he was wanted by authorities in Granada for sexual assault.

Burglar injured in balcony leap

Mayor killed in house fire by Simon Russell

THE victim of a house fire in Gandia has been confirmed as the mayor of a local municipality it was reported last Friday. Rafael Sjoblom Martinez, aged 72, was the mayor of the tiny village of Castellonet de la Conquesta which has a population of about 150. He was in his Gandia apartment with other family members last Thursday morning when the fire started, probably from a heating element. His wife and granddaughter were able to shelter in another room but Mr Sjoblom was trapped in the dining room. His 78 year old wife and granddaughter, aged 8, were both treated for smoke inhalation after being rescued from the apartment by firemen from Gandia and Oliva who were called to the scene. His 39 year old daughter was also in the building. The apartment, on Calle Guardamar, was on the third floor of a five storey block meaning all the other dwellings had to be evacuated and the building ventilated before residents were allowed to return. Mr Sjoblom was the leader of the Partido Popular in his home town and was not planning to run for election in the next municipal elections.

Europe in Island Restaurant probe by Alex Trelinski

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION is to investigate any environmental damage that may have been caused by a restaurant on Benidorm Island (also known as Peacock Island), which has been denied an operating licence by the local council. The Restaurante l’Illano has been operating on the popular tourist attraction since the 1960´s, but apparently never had permission to do so. Benidorm council said it was unable to grant it a licence because the island is owned by the Provincial Coastal service, and issued that ruling back in October. The restaurant launched an appeal against the decision,

Restaurant and tourists on the iconic island

which it lost last week, and that means no refreshments for the many tourists that visit the island each year. The matter was referred to the EU´s petitions committee in Brussels by the Benidorm branch of the Esquerra

Unida País Valencià (EUPV)political party, with the committee saying that an investigation is warranted, and has passed on a report for the European Commission to take action over. The petitions committee stated that

“there is a clear indication that European directives on environmental protection have been violated”. A massive mystery remains as to why the restaurant was able to operate for decades without any licence, with

EUPV MEP Marina Albiol praising what the EU has done and stating:“We need this investigation to see why people were allowed to act with total impunity over this use of public space”.

Brit fugitive spotted in Benidorm A British paper has printed an article alleging that a man wanted by UK authorities in connection with a major drugs operation has moved to Benidorm to avoid arrest. The “Liverpool Echo” said that Leon Cullen was sighted driving a large Audi in the Costa Blanca resort, although they didn’t elaborate on the

information. The Crimestoppers charity has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of Cullen and his brother Anthony, which may have prompted the call. The pair are accused of being the ringleaders of a dangerous Warrington gang that deals in guns and drugs as well as money laundering.

Train graffiti artists jailed

Two graffiti artists, who forced a train to a halt, before spraying it with paint, have been jailed for two years by an Alicante court. The men, who committed the crime in September 2011, placed metal bars and wooden pallets on the tracks of the FGV rail line, just to the North of Benidorm. Accompanied by another man, who is awaiting sentence after the court rejected his appeal and a juvenile already sentenced, the three waited for an oncoming train to stop at the

barricade, which they placed beyond a bend and change of gradient on the tracks. Once the driver of the train braked to a halt, the men, whose faces were covered, sprayed messages and graffiti across all of the carriages including the engine. There were no passengers aboard the train at the time, because the driver was returning at the end of service. The artists were identified by their graffiti names written

on the side of the carriages, “ARCO”, “THREADS or ILOS” and “WOES”. The Alicante chamber, ratified the sentence handed down in 2015 by a criminal court, confirming the aggravating circumstance of disguise, mitigating delays and criminal disorders. The convicted felons, must also payFerrocarrils de la GeneralitatValenciana (FGV) 866 euros each in lieu of civil liability, an amount that corresponds to a part of the cleaning of the wagons.

Condemnation for naked images spread by kids

A Valencian court has ordered Levante UD’s under 13 female football team to pay €3,000 in compensation to one of their players after two others took naked photographs of her and posted them on social media. The lawsuit had been brought by the parents of the girl who was photographed and they filed against the club and the parents of the

two children responsible. The victim had been photographed without her knowledge in the shower after a match. When she came across the image on the internet she reported the incident to her coach at which stage a playing ban was issued against the defendants.

In the writ the club was accused of inadequate supervision of the minors, Levante said that the mobiles should not have been in the changing room as they are banned. The parents of the children involved have also been ordered to pay €3,000 in compensation to the victim who suffered psychological problems after the incident.

Benidorm and La Nucia drug busts

National police officers from Benidorm have broken up twoseparate drug operations in the area during the last week. The first raid involved a swoop on a house in La Nucia, in which a man of Polish origin, was arrested on suspicion of being part of an organised group dedicated to the cultivation and distribution of marijuana. Investigating officers were made aware of the possible existence of a criminal group of foreign origin, who may be cultivating narcotic substances in a house located in the town. A series of enquiries led them to the exact location of the property, where they discovered a strong smell of marijuana outside the house and the loud noise from several air conditioning units hidden inside.

by Andy Mansell

This led the agents to suspect that the premises could be being used to cultivate and later manufacture the narcotic substances. On entering the property, they seized more than 400 large plants and about four kilos of marijuana buds and arrested the occupier on charges of endangering

public health. In the second investigation, officers arrested a young man of Spanish nationality, who was allegedly engaged in retail drug trafficking from an address in Benidorm. The agents raided the property after receiving several complaints from neighbours that the house was being frequented by people buying drugs.

Police rescue 3 Women forced into prostitution in Benidorm by Andy Mansell

Three South American women, forced to work as prostitutes in Benidorm, have been rescued by National Police officers. The officers also arrested three men from the resort and one from Elche, on charges of trafficking and sexual exploitation. The women, from Colombia and Venezuela, were in a situation of total vulnerability, having been brought over to Spain with the promise of well paid jobs, money, air tickets and accommodation. When they arrived in the

country, they were allegedly told they had unwittingly, incurred debts of 7000â‚Ź each and as they had no relevant documents to stay, had no option but to become sex workers to pay off the money they owed. The operation began last October, when officers became aware of an apartment in Benidorm, where they believed several women were being forced into prostitution against their will. After observing the movements of people entering and leaving the

property 24 hours each day, the officers were able to identify the four men alleged to be operating the ring. One of the men is alleged to have travelled to South America to target the vulnerable women and bring them to Spain. They identified another man, who regularly transported the victims to and from a property in Elche to work and a further two who guarded the Benidorm apartment. The women were released without charges.

Food a problem for many in the region THE results have been published of a study carried out by the Red Cross and the University of Valencia analysing the people that the charity helps by supplying with food across the Valencian community. Economic data shows that 25% of those households had no income, 35% had between 300 to 500 euros a month coming in and 15% 500 to 700 euros. Of those receiving a regular income only a quarter of them earn it through work, with the majority being dependent on state benefits or help from families or even friends.

by Simon Russell

Over half of these low income households say they eat less than they would like due to financial constraints and 10% of the children in

these families eat less then they should. Most say their diet is unvaried and often unhealthy. 49% said that at least one person in the household suffered from a chronic disease which is often the reason they cannot work. In 2017 the Red Cross helped 420,000 vulnerable people in the Alicante province alone.

Tiki Beach-ed

by Simon Russell

Almost three years after an original court judgement ordered its closure, one of Benidorm’s iconic beachfront bars has been flattened to the ground. Neighbouring businesses and

www.weekendernews.com

FRIday 22Nd FEBRUaRy 2019

residents were taken by surprise early last Monday morning, when a team of contractors, bulldozers and trucks moved onto the premises of the infamous Tiki Beach Bar, on the resort’s Levante Beach and began to dismantle the building. R u m o u r s , uncertainty and confusion surrounds the future of the prized beachfront location, as Tiki Beach had been trading normally up to the previous day and so far no announcement has been made regarding any new business on the plot of land. However, much speculation has consumed fans and critics of the controversial bar, who took to the pages of social media over the following day, to comment, share their opinions and views on the rumours.

One thing is certain, Tiki Beach, will not reappear in its former guise, as the building had been bulldozed to the ground by Tuesday morning. Wildly popular and beloved by thousands of tourists and locals alike, Tiki Beach had long become the subject of a string of complaints from neighbours in the Santa Margarita building in whose grounds the controversial pub is located. Residents had complained repeatedly over the years about the loud music and boozy tourists and the atmosphere the bar has created, plus the partying in the middle of the road making walking and vehicular access difficult at times. Last November, the Spanish Supreme court eventually ruled in favour of the residents and ordered the closure of the pub in a decision that couldn’t be appealed. That decision did not deter the bar’s owners, who did appeal again, on the grounds that one of the witness statements was false testimony as it accused the wife of the bar’s owner of colluding with local police and residents of the building. This gave the bar a stay of execution, to remain open through the busy season of Benidorm Fiestas, Christmas and New Year, right through to its closure earlier

Trio of trouble

THREE people have been arrested in a National Police operation that saw the trio target elderly home owners in a series of domestic robberies. The arrests took place in Alicante, Elche and Orihuela, with the detainees being charged with 64 crimes. The man and two women would con their way into homes pretending to be relatives or friends of neighbours.

The women would run the con, with one of them disappearing inside the property to steal anything valuable, whilst her friend would get to distract their victim. The man was used as back-up muscle threatening violence to the home owner, if he or she had worked out that they were being tricked.

this week. The Tiki Beach facebook page has no information regarding the situation and the word from the contractors on site is that, they are constructing a new bar, which should open in around two weeks time.

So, it does appear that this really is the end of the promenade for Tiki Beach, a bar that you either loved or hated, but never forgot. Look out for updates on future developments in the pages of The Weekender over the next few weeks.

Elysium City will have its own high-speed train station, Disney-style theme park, a 40,000-seat football stadium, several resorts, and luxury hotels. The second phase, due to launch in 2028, will

see more luxury hotels, an equestrian centre and a Formula One race track added to the development. Developers say Elysium will focus on design construction and operations that promote “sustainability, efficiency, and quality of life.”

The city will run on free gigabit speed WiFi and feature solar-powered smart street infrastructure, smart light poles and bus shelters and green coffee carts. The project expects to draw 4.5 million visitors during its first year in business.

Spanish Oscars on the Costas? VALENCIA has thrown it’s hat in the ring to host the 2020 edition of the Goya Film Awards ceremony, the most prestigious night in the Spanish and Latino movie industry. The only two other cities to express an interest at this stage are Palma de Mallorca and Sevilla, the latter of which hosted this years event at the beginning of February. Other cities may well put their case forward, including Madrid which

has hosted all but two of the galas. Valencian Councillor Sandra Gomez said that the Community has a very strong audio-visual industry, and the awards ceremony would be a good opportunity to showcase it. Warning about fake police scam PEOPLE, especially the elderly, have been asked to be wary of fraudsters who are posing as national police officers. There have been at least three instances of cases where individuals have received phone calls from someone claiming to be a Valencian police officer and they have information that a relative has run someone over. To avoid jail the for relative they will need to pay a sum of between €40,000 and €50,000. All the cases known about were elderly people and it is believed they are being purposely targeted. Police said that this approach would never be taken by them and any such incident should be immediately reported.

The Madrid bound carriageway was closed until 10.30am and traffic was diverted through Aspe and Novelda town centres, causing traffic problems in both towns during the morning rush hour. An investigation will follow, probably focusing on how the lorry trailer came to be

Alicante gets the blues “ RACIST” BANK DEMO

SPAIN’S second-largest bank has apologised after hundreds of Chinese customers accused the group of racism of freezing their bank accounts without warning. BBVA customers staged a protest outside the group’s Madrid offices waving Chinese and Spanish flags and demanding their accounts be unlocked. The bank apologised at the weekend but denied that they deliberately discriminated against Chinese customers, claiming

the accounts were frozen in compliance with Spanish antimoney laundering regulations. “We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused by our decision to block certain customers’ bank accounts over the last few days,” BBVA spokesman Álvaro Calleja said in a statement. “We are sensitive to these circumstances and we have rolled out the measures required to mitigate these impacts,” he added.

RIGHT-WING FIRST

A Vox rally in Valencia last October.

THE NEW far-right Vox party, that got seats a few months ago in the Andalucia regional elections, is set to get seats in the national parliament…the first time the far right has been represented in Madrid for nearly four years. Two opinion polls published last weekend unsurprisingly forecast that no single party would get a majority in the snap election called by the socialist PSOE Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, for Sunday, April

by Alex Trelisnki

28th. Sanchez called the early election on Friday after Catalan pro-independence parties who had previously backed him joined opposition parties in defeating his 2019 budget bill last week. One of the polls projects Vox at getting up to 46 seats in the 350 seat Congress, whilst the PSOE would get up to 117 seats.

The conservative Partido Popular would get up to 77 seats, and with such an outcome, one of the two main parties would need the support of at least another party to secure a majority. The centre-right Ciudadanos would win up to 47 seats, in a tight race with Vox set to be the third-largest party, with the left-wing Podemos set to be the biggest losers, losing over half their representation, and coming in at around 30 seats.

Wired for speed A new zip-wire has been installed in l’Aiguera Park in Benidorm and is among an overall expansion of the children’s play area. The 25-metre “skyline” is aimed at kids between 3 and 12 years old, simulates the famous Benidorm skyline and is located next to the outdoor Julio Iglesias music auditorium. The children’s play castle has also been expanded and the four corners topped off with profiles of the cities four tallest buildings, the Bali Hotel, In Tempo towers plus the Lungano and Negurigane buildings.

This area now consists of 288 square meters with child-friendly rubber flooring and can accommodate 95 users. Mayor Toni Perez said, “as well as improving the area

Another airline crashes

Black Friday rethink

Flybmi - grounded permanently.

Too many sales hitting the clothing sector?

SPAIN’S textile industry admitted they had what they colourfully call “a good slapping” over the Christmas and New Year period, laying much of the blame on the November Black Friday sales. Spokesman Eduardo Zamacola said that sales fell 3% in December and

by Simon Russell

1.9% in January compared to 2017. Many clothing retailers will be rethinking their strategy for Black Friday this year with the early sales in November having a detrimental effect on the busy festive period. He points out that the sale

is an import from the US but there it is the day after Thanksgiving. This holiday is a major gift buying event in itself and many presents would have been purchased at full price beforehand. However, in Spain people are simply buying early for Christmas and the Three Kings.

Talks UK PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has said progress has been made in talks about changes to the Brexit deal that could win MPs’ backing but admitted “time is of the essence”. The grim and tiredlooking PM, probably feeling the force of MPs

quitting the Conservative Party, met the EU’s JeanClaude Juncker in Brussels this week to discuss legallybinding guarantees over the Irish border. May is trying to renegotiate the backstop - the insurance policy to prevent the return of

THE airline industry continues to go through an uncertain period as another small player ceased trading this week, the UK’s Flybmi. This follows on from last week’s collapse of German flyer Germania earlier this month as reported in the “Weekender”. However, while that firm was a budget airline, Flybmi was more aimed at business travellers, charging premium fares where they could.

physical checks on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is the most contentious part of the withdrawal agreement Mrs May agreed with the EU in November, which was rejected by Parliament by a large

margin last month. Critics fear the backstop - which could be activated if the two sides do not settle their future partnership by the end of 2020 and choose not to extend the transition period - would leave the UK tied to a customs union indefinitely and see Northern Ireland treated differently. The EU has consistently said it will not reopen discussions over the withdrawal agreement agreed in November. Mrs May said the two sides had made progress and that she had made it clear MPs would only accept guarantees that had similar legal force to the agreement. “We have agreed that work to find a solution will continue at pace, time is of the essence and it is in both our interests that when the UK leaves the EU it does so in an orderly way,” she said.

by Matthew Richards

When the collapse was announced last week travellers were once again left stranded despite government promises to address this issue after the fiasco that was the Monarch collapse just over a year ago. Industry experts have long feared for Flybmi who were regularly taking off half empty despite only having small planes with most “ordinary” people still

opting for the budget airlines, which also catered better for resort destinations. As usual, Brexit came into the discussion about what went wrong and the management team said the uncertainty over the UK leaving the EU was certainly a factor in the shut-down. Anyone holding a ticket for a future flight has been advised to contact their credit card company for regarding a refund.

Check your UK Pensions Lifetime Allowance Tax charge Risk! Anyone who is looking forward to taking their UK pensions benefits, be it from a Company Pension (Defined Benefits or Defined Contributions) or a Private Pension is subject not just to income tax when they take their Pension benefits but potentially the Lifetime Allowance Tax charge as well. The Lifetime Allowance is the total value of all pensions that you can have before incurring a tax penalty on them. The Lifetime Allowance is an individual allowance, and the types of pensions this tax can apply to are: Personal Pensions, such as SIPPs, Personal Pensions (PPPs), AVCs, Company Pensions otherwise known as Defined Benefit or Final Salary Pension and Defined Contributions. Note: The State Pension is not included in the calculation. In previous years the Lifetime Allowance was out of most people’s reach and at its peak was 1.8 million pounds, however today it is just £1,030,000. Now you might think that is a high value to have in a pension before the Lifetime Allowance Tax charge kicks in, however it is the way in which the HMRC values the Pensions Schemes that makes this level of pension quite easy to exceed for some people. The number of individuals exceeding this limit is now catching more people out than ever. The current Lifetime Allowance tax charge is 55% on any amount over the Lifetime Allowance or 25% tax is charged on the income where the excess is used to buy an annuity.

17

By Andrew Gibson DipIP BLACKTOWER Financial Management

How is the Lifetime Allowance calculated? Firstly, it is only when you come to take pension benefits such as lump sums and or pension benefits such as drawdown or annuity the Lifetime Allowance is calculated, this is known as a Benefit Crystallisation Event (BCE). It is the value of the Pension Pot/s which is valued against the Lifetime Allowance and not the income. In addition, Final Salary schemes are valued against the Lifetime Allowance by multiplying the initial Annual Pension by either a factor of 20 times or 25 times depending on the year when the pension was taken out or when it is going to take. Example: Let’s assume that Mr Sunny Moon, has a final Salary Pension which will give him £42,000pa and a commencement Lump Sum of £120,000 at the age of 65. In addition, he has a personal Pension pot which he took out in his younger days valued at £140,000 which he also plans on taking benefits at age 65. To calculate his pension against the lifetime allowance, firstly we value the Final Salary pension as a Pot of money. Pension at age 65 of £42,000paX 20 = £840,000 plus the pension commencement Lump Sum of £120,000 plus the Value of his Personal Pension, in this case, is £140,000. Therefore his total Pensions would be £1,100,000, thereby exceeding the current lifetime allowance of £1,030,000 by £70,000. In this case, the Lifetime Allowance Tax charge would be £70,000 X 55% = £38,500 to the tax man! He could buy an annuity with the excess in which case the Lifetime Allowance tax charge would be 25% of the gross income.

A simple way to help avoid the Tax Charge is to take pension benefits before the pension gets too close to the Lifetime Allowance. However, this cannot be done until the person taking the pension benefits is at least age 55 and should never be done without taking professional financial advice prior to deciding to take pension benefits. Pensions can be taken in all sorts of ways, such as drawdown via Sipps and QROPS. UK Expat Spanish Tax residents could utilise a QROPS for example, and these can be utilised to limit your exposure to the Lifetime Allowance Tax charge and can be very useful in a retirement planning and tax planning exercises. There are other ideas on mitigating tax on pensions. Here in Spain, UK Pension funds not in payment are excluded from the Spanish Wealth Tax regime, whereas most other assets are not. The UK tax-free Lump Sums available to Pensions in the UK are not free from Spanish Savings Tax, so are taxable in

Munich (Germany)

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons

Contrary to its name, Oktoberfest, in Munich, actually starts in September, specifically 12 Ó clock on the 21st this year, and will run until Sunday 6th October. During this time, around 6-7 million people

will attend the party, drinking a n approx 7 million litres of beer – that s the combined ´ total, not per person (we doń t recommend that you try!). When should you go? Well, clearly, before the beer runs out, which, if all 7 million turn up early, it could be a possibility! There are an opening and a closing ceremony, both spectacular to view. The Mayor of Munich opens the festival by tapping open the first keg, the signal to start Prost-ing! The closing ceremony is a fantastical sing-along with you and your tens of thousands of new friends, lights dimmed and sparklers waving madly in the dark. In between the start and the end, there are events and parades in-keeping with the theme of the festival, with costume and family days, concerts with traditional Bavarian concerts and much more. The festival is held very centrally, very easy to reach by public train and transport. For the return ride home, taxis are always an option if the public transport looks more daunting after a few... How much will it cost? Well, the costs of flights and hotels are always influenced by the interest shown in an event, and this is one of the main events of the year. So this is a variable cost that cań t really be estimated. The earlier the better in booking these. The main event is held close to the Wiesn which is close in itself to the old town. This

offers many charming options for restaurants and hotels, all within walking. Prices are quickly on the rise, as this popular event books up year after year. Prices of 250€ - 500€ a night are commonplace in the city centre, although you can find some great places to stay around Glockenbach, which is superbly connected by public transport. Alicante is well connected with Munich, there are 2-3 airline carriers flying there weekly, so if this is an event that you are interested in, get moving with it – the early bird gets the beer, so to speak! What we do know are the costs of drinking and eating at the festival are not particularly cheap – a litre of beer is around 11€ and costs of eating around 10 – 15€ in the tents. Conservative estimates then would be around 50€ a day. In the interest of finding out what type of information we all want to know, but doń t want to ask, let us help you by advising the following-: You can pre-reserve space in the beer tents, but turning up can also be an option. Much harder to find a seat/space in the evenings and weekends than during the week. There are toilets! Outside of the large beer tents. Benches are fine to dance on, tables are not. Perhaps take your lead from others (unless you are a trend-setting internet sensation wannabee....) It s really, really, really frowned ´ upon if you try and steal a glass from the tent. You have been warned!

What Overseas Medical Expenses are covered by travel insurance? If you’re injured in an accident or suddenly get sick while traveling, you can be covered for emergency medical treatment including: • Hospitalisation • Day surgery and out-patient treatment

Visits to registered medical practitioners • Prescribed medicines • Ambulances • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary We also have 24 hour multilingual assistance teams that can guide you to the nearest hospital, arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to the medical facility, give support to your family, and help you navigate local customs. • Ongoing treatment at home This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not covered. There are limits and conditions that apply, so for more information check out our articles on overseas medical coverage and adventure sports coverage, and read your policy carefully before you buy.

Britain copper´s cuppa row

It doesn´t matter what job you do, you need a break. It´s as simple as that, but a Lincolnshire copper has been forced to turn to Twitter to justify a hardearned cup of coffee after working more than seven hours without a break. Sergeant Mike Templeman had been on an ‘extremely busy’ shift when his team popped for a drink in the early hours of Sunday morning. But one member of

the public sitting in the outlet was not happy at the officer’s on-shift refreshment. Mike´s tweet said: ‘7 1/2 hours into an extremely busy shift with no breaks and a couple of the team managed a quick coffee between jobs, but drank it in the shop in order to respond to any other incidents. While dutifully ignoring the “What a waste of my taxes” comment as we left.’ Sgt Templeman

Karl Lagerfeld 1933 to 2019

TWO octogenarians who had a huge influence on modern style and fashion passed away this week, coincidentally both aged 85. Probably the best known to most was designer Karl Lagerfeld who died on Tuesday after a short illness. German born Lagerfeld, with his trademark sunglasses, gloves and suit was a global figure, known even by people who don’t follow fashion. He was behind the Chanel brand as well as his own eponymous label and fashion house Fendi. Tributes poured in from the fashion world, talking of his genius, talent and ability to

inspire others. Lee Radizwill, who died at the weekend, is not such a well known name but you’ll certainly have heard of her sister - Jackie Kennedy, wife of President John F Kennedy. If we’re talking style icons they don’t come much bigger than JFK’s widow, the Princess Diana of her day. However younger sister Lee was also something of a fashion icon herself although possibly best known for her private life which included an affair with Aristotle

Onassis who would later marry sister Jackie. Her first marriage was to Michael Canfield, someone persistently rumoured to be the illegitimate son of the then Duke of Kent. She went through a series of high profile affairs, marriages and divorces, usually to older, rich and powerful men, even briefly becoming a princess after one short lived marriage to a Polish aristocrat. Ultimately she lived in the shadow of her sister, although in the US she is regarded as the last link to a dynasty which is as close to royalty as they have had over there.

Deer, cute but potentially deadly.

AN estimated 15,000 deer with a deadly infection that gives zombie like symptoms to the creatures are entering the food chain in the US it has been estimated. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is present in at least 24 states as well as parts of Canada and attacks the spinal cord. Infected deer become listless, drool nonstop, lose co-ordination and turn intensely aggressive in the period leading up to their death. At the moment CWD is confined to deer and close cousins elk and moose but can - and probably will - spread to humans. Michael Osterholm an expert in infectious

diseases said it was “probable” that CWD will jump the food chain to humans via consumption of contaminated meat. He went on to say that the number of cases could be substantial and compared the disease to the British outbreak of mad cow disease which killed at least 177 people. CWD has been present in wild deer for a number of years, which are often unknowingly shot and eaten. However it is now being detected in farmed deer, hugely increasing the exposure for people who get their venison from supermarket shelves rather than hunt it in the wild.

A man has received a lifetime ban from all Disney theme parks worldwide after unfurling a giant “Trump 2020 for President” banner on one of the rides in Disneyland California. New Yorker Dion Cini has twice before pulled off a similar stunt at the parks with a Disney spokesman saying “We welcome all guests to enjoy our parks; however, demonstrations and the display of signs and banners are not permitted.” Cini draped the banner over the side of the full-size steamboat on the Mark Twain river ride, something greeted with that mixture of cheers and boos that only President Trump can seem to elicit. Mr Cini, a 49-year-old ex-

He has unfurled similar flags at the Yankee baseballs stadium and regularly kayaks up the Hudson River in New York waving his pro-Trump publicity. The Disney Corporation has not said how they are planning to enforce Mr Cini’s lifetime ban, although it seems unlikely we have heard the last of him.

Vaping controversy heats up HONG Kong has passed legislation this week banning e-cigarettes as the debate about the benefits of the “healthy alternative to smoking” continues. Vaping was actually invented in China back in 2003 when pharmacist Han Li patented his “flameless electronic atomizing cigarette”. Marketed under the somewhat snappier e-cigarette label the product was an instant success, especially among people wanting to give up smoking but struggling without the hit of nicotine that vaping provides by heating tobacco rather than burning it. 35 million people use the product but the worldwide health lobby has expressed several concerns. Their major one is that the long term effects of e-cigarettes are completely unknown and probably won’t be until the current crop of guinea pigs - basically every vaper in the world - has been puffing away for

by Simon Russell

another decade or two. The closest scientists can get to a consensus is that it is almost certainly healthier than smoking, the leading cause of avoidable death globally, but long term who knows? The other issue is that the marketing of the product comes dangerously close to being aimed at kids with its range of sweet flavours and cool imagery. People may be surprised to know that of the 3 million vapers in the UK, for example, only half are ex-smokers. In what becomes a rather circular argument the key question is would the 1.5 million vapers who have never smoked have taken to standard fags instead? No-one really knows, a statement that stands true about the long term effects of vaping and, indeed, the short term history of the product as other countries consider banning or limiting sales.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The

At my tender age, I like to be regarded as a motorist that follows the rules over here, especially in regard to keeping within the speed limits, but you seem to get no credit for that. The number of times that I´m tail-gated because I refuse to break the law seems to be on the rise, and it has now got worse in recent weeks in the Torrevieja area with the introduction of a 50 kilometres per hour limit on the CV-905 dual carriageway. I was nearly hit last week, and have had drivers flash me in the rear, as nearly all of them flout the new limit. So, where is the Guardia Civil in all of this, as they would surely make an absolute financial killing in rounding up the hundreds of law-breakers? Doris Bates, Torrevieja. With a General Election happening at the end of April, what will that mean to the Spanish government´s plans to issue a Royal Decree guaranteeing the rights of British residents in the case of a no-deal Brexit? I read in your paper and other media sources that this was due to be issued this month, but as we are nearly into March, is this going on the back-burner as the issue of Gibraltar flares up again? I´ve also seen a report quoting the British Ambassador, Simon Manley, stating that assuming there is some kind of a deal between the UK and the EU, that we would have to switch our current green residencia certificates to a Foreigner´s Identity Card, but that only applies if you have a residencia in the first place. Is that true? Colin McDonald, Denia. ED:- That´s true on the identity card, known as a TIE, which is why UK officials here are urging all Brits to make sure they have a residencia certificate. As for that Royal Decree, no news on that as went to press! Thank you for the information in issue 80 of The Weekender over the 90/180 rule for travellers. Large numbers of UK pensioners stay between 90 and 180 days in the six months ending 31st March each year especially in Spain. Does any 180 day period allow the traveller to choose the first day whether a visa is required please, or is it the first day the tourist steps into any EU country albeit onwards to stay in say Spain? Can you confirm that application for a visa would not require much more than the Advanced Passenger Information already supplied now, and that the cost would be about six Euros and possibly done online? Alan Langford, Benidorm.

EDITOR:- At the moment, no visas are required for stays for Schengen area countries like Spain and France, with the UK passport sufficing. Essentially as soon as you step into any EU country and have your documentation checked within the so-called Schengen area, then that is day one of your stay. Despite talk of a post-Brexit fee of seven pounds for UK passport holders coming to a Schengen area country, the European Commission proposed in November that no visa would be needed so long as the UK offered the same deal to EU passport holders from the Schengen area. That´s where we are at the moment, but with all matters Brexit, it´s all subject to approval! Peggy Nutt’s 101st birthday party held on Saturday 16th February 2019 at Ciudad Patricia. Crackdown on mountain bikers

Local hospital first with new technique

by Simon Russell

THE HLA San Carlos de Denia is the first hospital in the region to introduce a new genetic technique that helps predict a woman’s chances of getting breast cancer. The private hospital has introduced the “Brecanrisk” tool, a non-invasive test that uses a combination of information including blood tests, family information, personal health history, lifestyle and a mammogram to determine the potential risk. Breast cancer surgeon Dr Begoña Patiño explained that there are up to 120 mini genetic alterations that if detected can increase the risk of contracting breast cancer by two or three times. Dr Patiño will be giving a talk about the procedure at Denia’s Casa de la Cultura this Friday (22 February) at 7pm.

Caterpillars cleared out

The emoji control system for mountain bikes.

AFTER concerns that new paths ploughed out by mountain bikers are having a detrimental effect on the Montgo Natural Park, measures have been put in place to ensure that designated bike routes are adhered to. The latest park bulletin states clearly where you can and can’t go, illustrated with frowning thumbs down and grinning thumbs-up emojis. Recently the local police and the environment agency patrolled one illegal path, stopping cyclists and warning them that

they were breaking the law and could be fined. The by-laws regarding cycling on the Montgo were actually passed back in 2007, but have only been loosely enforced according to many local residents. Cyclists have also been warned against intentional skidding, taking blind bends too fast, respecting private property and to be careful when cycling close to pedestrians.

PEST control companies have removed processionary caterpillars from two schools in Denia this month, although the Education Department has said there is no cause for concern. “This is a routine job, the creatures are not a problem if dealt with swiftly,” said Education Councillor Rafa Carrio. The schools affected were the Montgo and Vessanes and there have been no reports of any children or staff coming into contact with the caterpillars

Busy March for ARC THE Jalon Valley ARC has two events planned for next month, starting with a fashion show on 8 March. This is organised by The London Boutique and is at the Jalon Pensionistas Centre from 2 pm to 3 pm. Tickets, which can be purchased from The London Boutique, are priced at €3 (which includes a glass of cava) with all proceeds going to the charity. There will be stalls selling items such as fashion accessories and cosmetics and afternoon tea will also be served. On 24 March there is a table top sale at the same venue from 10 am until 2 pm. The cost of a table is €5 and €10 for businesses, again all proceeds going to charity. Some tables are provided but it is best if you can bring your own - email carol@eternalhealth.es or call 616 103 167 for more information. Jalon Valley ARC is a charity for rescued cats and dogs which is always looking for volunteers to help out in its shop in Jalon or with fund-raising events such as the ones above. which can cause extreme irritation. Their favoured habitat (the caterpillars not the children) is pine trees

and Mr Carrio said that the council was considering replacing those in schools with other Mediterranean species, although some of the older pines are protected.

Caravans fighting back Motor-homes legally parked in the Camping Sol in Calpe.

ONE of Spain’s leading caravan and motor-home associations has listed Calpe as a “hostile destination” and advised its members accordingly. The Marina Alta town is one of only four Spanish municipalities to receive this dubious honour from the Autonomous Motor-home Platform (PACA) alongside neighbouring Benidorm and towns in the Madrid and Malaga regions. The rating has been prompted by the Town Hall’s decision to effectively ban the large vehicles from parking overnight on public roads. PACA has bluntly told its members “don’t visit this municipality and don’t spend any money in the town”. This follows on from the report in the “Weekender” last month about

by Matthew Richards

an elderly British couple who had been visiting Calpe for 30 years in their motor-home. They stayed in local accommodation rather than the vehicle but still felt they were being driven away by the new rules which meant they had to park well away from their hotel and pay for the privilege. The debate has been fierce over this issue with caravanner’s saying that they spend an average of 100 Euros a day and are an important part of the holiday sector. Detractors say they hog prime seafront parking spaces, often for weeks at a time, carry all their food and drink with them and fail to clean up after leaving.

The vital component missing from your beauty routine

The latest buzz in the beauty world is all about CBD. Have you heard of it? Short for cannabidiol, CBD is grabbing headlines every day. Long known to be a beneficial ingredient for health and wellness, now it’s coming to the beauty industry. Why is it grabbing headlines? Because of its anti-inflammatory, soothing and anti-aging properties, which make the oil an ideal solution to transform your beauty routine, from hair products to lotions to facial oils. And if you’re thinking, wait, cannabis? That’s marijuana, right? Wrong. Though CBD is found in cannabis, it is legal, it won’t get you high, and you will pass your drug test with flying colors. That’s because it does not contain THC, which is the ingredient in cannabis that produces the “high” effect. Still confused? Don’t worry! We sat down with Kevin Wachs, the CEO and co-founder of Earthly Body, to look at some of the beauty areas where CBD is having the biggest impact. Wachs was one of the first to identify the crop’s potential benefits and has launched several hemp-based brands over his vast career. Have you experienced Palpitations?

Palpitations are a feeling of a rapid or irregular heartbeat, a sensation that most of us will have experienced at some time. Your heart can feel like it is ‘racing’, ‘thumping’ or ‘pounding’. Some people have a sensation of palpitations just when their healthy heart is beating especially fast, during exercise or in anxiety. However, palpitations in

older people are often caused by a heart problem such as abnormal rhythms of the heart. The most common abnormal heart rhythm is atrial fibrillation (fast irregular contractions of chambers of the heart known as the atria). The overlying cause may be coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis of the arteries supplying the heart muscle) an overactive

thyroid gland or even depression. In younger, fitter people, palpitations are most often caused by stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, or by stress. Some drug treatments can cause palpitations as a side effect. Because palpitations cause an unusually fast heart beat, they can cause the

pumping action of the heart to become inefficient thus causing delivery of oxygen to the body’s tissues may fall. In turn, this leads to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness or a feeling of light-headiness. Should any person be suffering from a sensation of palpitations they would be advised to have an E.C.G. – See special offer below.

Top 3 “silent”cat killers

When it comes to caring for your cat, these simple recommendations may be a life saver. • Maintain a safe environment • Feed a high quality food • Think about preventive care (e.g., an physical examination every year and the appropriate vaccines) • Provide lots of affection and exercise, of course! By following these simple tips, you can help keep your cats healthier and happier. However, you should also be aware of five “silent” killers in cats. Knowing what the most common killers are, you can know what to look out for. With most of these diseases, the sooner the signs are recognised, the sooner you can seek professional help for your cat.

1. Chronic kidney disease

or chronic kidney injury. This basically means that 75% of both the kidneys are ineffective and not working. Clinical signs of CRD include: • Excessive drinking • Excessive urinating • Larger clumps in the litter box • Weight loss • Bad breath (due to toxins building up in the blood and causing ulcers in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach) • Lethargy • Hiding With appropriate management, cats can live with CKD for years, unlike dogs where CKD usually progresses more rapidly. Chronic management may include a low-protein diet, frequent blood test, increasing water intake, medications and even fluids under the skin.

hyperthyroidism, the sooner you treat it, the less potential side effects or organ damage will occur in your cat.

3. Diabetes mellitus Another silent killer that affects cats is diabetes mellitus (DM). As many of our cats can often be overweight, they are at a greater risk for DM. With diabetes, the pancreas fails to secrete adequate amounts of insulin (Type I DM) or there is resistance to insulin (Type II DM). Insulin is a natural hormone that drives sugar into the cells. As a result of the cells starving for glucose, the body makes more and more glucose, causing hyperglycemia (i.e. high blood sugar) and many of the sypmtoms seen with DM. Common sypmtoms for DM are similar to those of Chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism and include:

Calendar will help kids

Children staff and local police at the presentation.

THE Denia’s Local Police Solidarity Calendar has raised €5,000 for the Raquel Paya special needs school. The calendar was sold by the police themselves as well as staff and students from the centre following an initiative from local officer Toni Climent. He worked with Nieves Ramirez

from the Raquel Payas school to produce the finished article using local photographers. A cheque was handed over to the parents association this week with children from the centre also attending the ceremony.

This powerful production will be at Careline Theatre, Alcalali on the 8th and 9th of March at 8 pm. Careline is thrilled to host the Company who will stay in Alcalali with a great friend of the theatre company, Rosalind. This lovely lady resident in Alcalali actually was visiting Prague when she came across their work. After contacting Careline President, Candida Wright and having a couple of meetings together the idea was formed and now in three weeks time, Guy Roberts and his Muses will be appearing for two nights to the delight of theatregoers and lovers of classical theatre alike. The story of the Trojan War, An Iliad, a moving, modern, intense, relatable and utterly entertaining retelling of Homer’s epic poem. A single, modern-day storyteller takes the stage—possibly Homer, possibly one of the many bards who followed in his footsteps. He retells Homer’s classic tale of the Trojan War, specifically the great fighters Achilles and Hector. As he shares his tale with a modern audience,

references with wars throughout the ages collide with the ancient story of Greeks and Trojans. As a travelling storyteller, he uses poetry, music, humour, and poignant accounts of war to share the experience from the perspective of a fighting Greek soldier and a poet, a tale he is fated to tell throughout time. This is after all not Iliad, but An Iliad, and in this version, the story of war is not heralded unquestionably, rather is presented as the outgrowth of our worst natures, instinctual at times, but shameful still. In what is effectively a one-man show, save for the presence of two Muses whose purpose is song and music, Roberts, playing our anonymous narrator, wants to make us see. Lisa Peterson’s

and Denis O’Hare’s deeply moving An Iliad starring Guy Roberts as the Poet and Jessica Boone and Fanette Ronjat as the Muses. Tickets 15 euros. Box Office: 605181726. carelineboxoffice@ gmail.com

Citroen C5 Aircross

To make a splash in a market that includes the Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Ateca and Kia Sportage, you have to do something a little special. Particularly when you’re as late to the party as Citroen is with its C5 Aircross. Citroen says its market research reveals that, while crossover SUV buyers love their cars, they do have their frustrations. Practicality is one - often, cars of this ilk aren’t as practical as you might have expected. Comfort is another. With manufacturers focusing on appearance and a sporty driving experience, something has to be sacrificed and that’s often things like ride quality and boot space. The Citroen C5 Aircross does things in a different way than we’re used to. Highlights include a 15mm layer of thick, mattress-like foam on the seats. In the back, meanwhile, there are three individual seats that can slide, fold or recline. The interior is very practical, with plenty of head and legroom for passengers in the front and rear. Boot space isn´t bad either with a considerably bigger boot than rivals, even bigger than the Citroen C4 Spacetourer MPV.

The new suspension system, which uses Citroen’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, is designed to reduce sudden jolts and provide a ‘magic carpet effect’ with a ride that floats over bumps and dips in the road. At launch, buyers can choose from a combination of petrol and diesel engines, ranging from a 130PS 1.2-litre Puretech

petrol to a 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel producing 180PS. A plug-in hybrid version is set to follow soon. Inside the C5 Aircross really shines. Not necessarily in a premium way - you will find some hard plastics if you seek them out (although it does feel more premium than a Qashqai) - but in a clever family-friendly kind of way. Everything feels robust, as if

it’ll stand the everyday abuse of young children, and there’s plenty of storage for all the bits and bobs families accumulate. The C5 Aircross is the kind of car you can spend hours in and feel fairly refreshed at the end of the journey. You sit high up great for providing a good view of the road ahead - and the seats feature extra padding to reduce aches and pains.

Eisenberg to attempt ‘fastest car on sand’ record

Land speed racer and record-setting motorcycle rider Zef Eisenberg and his Madmax Race Team have got a new target in their sights. On the weekend of 6-7 April 2019, Zef will aim to become the first person to achieve a British land speed record on bike and car within a year. The goal is to hit 200mph and beyond in a crazy 1200hp specially built road legal Porsche 911 Turbo S on sand. The attempt will take place at Pendine Sands in South Wales. In May 2018, Eisenberg became the first person to exceed 200mph with a wheeldriven vehicle, at this world famous speed track. He reached 201.572mph on his supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa laying down the marker as the ‘fastest motorbike on sand’ in the world, just 20 months after

surviving Britain’s fastestever (230mph) motorcycle crash. Eisenberg spent three months in hospital, followed by 3 months in a wheel chair, but defied the odds to race again in under a year. Since the crash, he’s set numerous records – including an ACU sanctioned flying quartermile, flying kilometre and flying mile, on his Madmax road legal supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa, albeit heavily modified. This ‘twin’ record attempt, however, is something very different, as is the outrageous car that Madmax Race Team has built specially for it. “I’m well known for setting records on bikes,” said Eisenberg, “so people started asking me why not cars?” It got Zef thinking, so after meticulous research into what would be needed

to top 200mph on sand, Eisenberg settled on a 2015 550hp Porsche 911 Turbo S. There was just one problem: Although this car is very fast, it will ‘only do 175mph’ in a mile on Tarmac. To achieve 200mph on tarmac within a mile would, the car would need 750bhp at the wheels. Sand creates a lot of resistance and tyre slip, so we worked out that we’d need at least 1000 bhp at the rear wheels, which equates to a crazy 1200hp at the engine, compared to just 550hp from the factory. The Madmax race team therefore hand built a bespoke 4.2-litre Porsche motorsport engine with new stronger internals, upgraded Turbo’s, plus a new E85 fuel system, advanced cooling set-up and far more. A lot of work was done to ensure that the monstrous power would come in as

smoothly as possible in order to limit wheelspin on the loose surface. To cope with such an extreme output, the gearbox and clutch needed to be extensively upgraded, and the brakes and suspension modified to allow for different wheels and tyres.

Apart from a full FIA roll cage, competition seats and safety harness, the Porsche’s interior is completely standard. “Weight is actually your friend on sand,” said Eisenberg. “It’s about stability – putting enough weight on the tyres to

increase traction. Even though, we have accidentally made the car 140kg lighter than standard, we have no need to strip weight out.The car is actually road legal, so we will drive it from the hotel onto the beach and to the restaurant after, hopefully to celebrate.”

ITV2 8:35pm Sun 24th February Jurassic World has been running with great success for more than a decade in the wake of the disaster that haunted the island twenty-two years ago. The park’s geneticists have once again broken scientific and ethical boundaries in order to raise attendance for the park, now experiencing a decline in happy customers. Convinced that the new attraction will bring in many more people, but having crossed the line once again, the results may be devastating.

Drop Quotes Source: Benjamin Disraeli

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

A Brit embarrassing...

Unfortunately, this column was written before the star studded 2019 Brit Award ceremony took place last Wednesday. Don’t worry though, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of priceless moments for me to get my teeth into next week, if past years are anything to go by. We’ve endured loads of gaffes, glitches, celebrity strops and presenter meltdown’s over the years. Can you recall, Madonna falling downstairs, Bjork receiving her award saying, she was “Very Grapefruit”,

Peter kay calling Liam Gallagher a ‘nobhead’, fights between Ronnie Wood and Brandon Block, Jarvis Cocker showing his bum to Michael Jackson as he sang Earth Song, Kanye West’s expletive laden performance ….. and the list goes on and on. My favourite memory was thirty years ago, when some TV Brainbox thought it would be a good idea to team 6 ft 5”, Mick Fleetwood and 5 foot nothing, Samantha Fox up to present the ceremony. The excruciating evening was dogged with guest mix-ups, autocue

fails and jokes that went down like lead balloons. Sam later complained that Mick was stoned and she just wanted the floor to open up and swallow her. Who can forget the beautiful moment when the pair excitedly introduced The Four Tops to present an award, only for Boy George to walk out? If you’ve never seen it, I urge you to find it on youtube….. it’s absolutely, hand over the eyes, hilariousness.

British fans of Rupaul’s Drag Race have been beside themselves for months now, since series producers announced that the eponymous drag queen Rupaul and fellow judge Michelle Visage, will be doing a UK version of the show for BBC 3 later this year. Now they’ve gone into complete delirium to learn that guest judges will include, British gay icons, Graham Norton and Alan Carr. Drag Race has become a global smash-hit, airing in 193 countries, although every network in the US bar one turned it down initially. The US edition has gained a huge cult following and has been nominated for a recordbreaking 23 Emmy awards. Norton and Carr will rotate each week, being joined by an additional celebrity guest, with both appearing in the finale to crown the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

Graham Norton and Alan Carr will join Michelle Visage and Rupaul as judges. Long term fan, Graham said, ““Becoming part of the Drag Race family makes me ridiculously happy. I can’t wait to see what the UK drag queens bring to the party, but they better weeeeerk!!!” While Alan announced, “Wow! To be sat next to Michelle Visage and Mama Ru as a guest judge on possibly one of my all-time favourite shows EVER is a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what the UK Queens have got in store – it’s going to be sickening! *does death drop*.” And the final word went to Rupaul, who enthused, “I was both shocked and delighted when Graham and Alan told me they’d be wearing tucking panties when sitting at the judges’ table. I told them it was not necessary, but they insisted. Now that’s what I call dedication!” Now that …. I must see!!

Karl was forever a feline fancier Much has been written about the extravagant lifestyle of fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, who took his final walk along the catwalk to the sky earlier this week. As well known for his waspish wit and lisping voice, as his designer rags, which kept Chanel at the head of the fashion world over the years, the 85 year old multilingual, eccentric, German, cut a solitary figure in his personal life. As fast as he made money, Lagerfeld, who once said “Life is not a beauty contest, some ugly people are great!” spent it, throwing millions “out of the window”, as he described it, for art, furniture, and homes in which to display his treasures. But now, all the attention turns to who is set to benefit from the alleged $200 million fortune left behind by the cult designer. A clue might lie in this quote he made recently, in a CNN interview, “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat.” The cat in question is Choupette, hiseight year old fluffy white puss, who led an equally outrageous lifestyle to Lagerfeld, with her own bodyguard, chef and two maids. He once said “She has her own little

Pampered pussy, Choupette had her own bodyguard, chef and two maids. fortune, she’s an heiress,” and when asked if he would one day leave his money to her, he said “‘Among others, yes. Don’t worry, there is enough for everyone.” Incidentally, Choupette was not technically his cat, as he was only her babysitter initially. Largerfeld looked after her, for model Baptiste Giabiconi, while she was travelling, but fell so in love that he refused to hand her back over. What a lucky little pussy Choupette is …… when anyone babysits my tribe of cats, they can’t wait to get out of the door, as they scream “Never, ever, ever again!!”

K Pop is Tip Top

If, like me, you’re not a pre-pubescent girl, teenage princess, or music journalist, the words K Pop, would probably not be on your vocabulary radar. No, I’m not referring to a new kids breakfast cereal, K Pop is a phenomenon, a music phenomenon. Short for Korean Pop, the genre is, along with the Latino infused, Reggaeton, has become, the fastest growing, worldwide music trend over the past year or so. Modern K Pop, can be traced back to the mid 90’s, initially with boy and girl bands and soloists aimed at the home Korean market . With the rise of internet music sites, such as youtube and the opening up of markets in China, Japan and South East Asia, the genre, began to grow in popularity and a conveyor belt of youthful Asian music stars emerged from the K Pop factory. Now, the biggest band to come out of the stable, has broken into mainstream music in both the US and Europe and South America. BTS, or The Bangtan Boys, to use their full name, a seven piece Korean boyband, with boyish good looks and lyrics using English phrases, have suddenly exploded onto the UK music scene like a tidal wave. Following on from two sell out shows at London’s O2 Arena last October, the band have announced a further two European dates on their LOVE YOURSELF:SPEAK YOURSELF tour. They will play the huge Stade de Paris, in the French capital on June 7th, but before that, a sell out, 90,000 crowd is expected to gather for a concert at Wembley Stadium on June 1st. That’s the same amount of people who will see the Spice Girls, two weeks later, or as once watched the final Wham concert ……. God I’m feeling OLD!!

Sports & Local News

Montgo Golf Society

Today 15 February Montgo GS played its first Trophy Competition of the year, the Santana Shield sponsored by Steve Crossan. The weather today was very overcast with a light wind, but we still had a good turnout of 31 players which included 1 guest Glen Gardiner.

1st and winner of the Santana Shield was Hieko Schram with a very good 38 points, 2nd was Richard Fox with 37 points and 3rd place went to Brian Redfearn with 36 points. The 2 nearest the pins were both won by Ladies, Jan Jones on the 3rd with 4.82m and after a lot of remeasuring

Claire Stringer won on the 11th with 10.03m beating Ruth Strasser by 1cm. We had 2 Two´s today and these were won by Liz Butler and Geoff Willcock who each received a coveted Montgo Ball. Next week is a Stableford Competition sponsored by Ian Bonser.

Benitachell Bowls Club

On the 15th of February the annual Valentine Massacre took place. This is a superb event and has been a club fixture for many years with a large group of members ie: Ladies versus Gentlemen coming together to compete against each other. The law of the game is not always adhered too,

and some dubious actions do take place, but happily no red cards were issued this year. All competitors wore red, in all shapes and forms, and two of the men became ladies for the day to make up the numbers, they looked good in their skirts and played quite well. The day ended with Tapas

provided alongside drinks from our excellent catering staff. Prizes of red heart bags filled with chocolates were awarded to all the Ladies and the Crystal Cup was awarded to the Men. The Ladies produced some superb bowling. As the saying goes ‘there always next year’.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There was 1 Monday Night game between a rampant Wolves team and a rejuvenated Newcastle side which finished 1-1 thanks to Dubravka’s mistake and only five 5th round F.A.Cup Ties which included Premier League teams that contributed to this weeks Alfaz Fantasy Football League only 14 goals, 3 clean sheets, 12 yellow cards and no red ones. With most Premier League Managers not selecting their strongest XI it meant a very low scoring week for the Fantasy with the average score a lowly 7 points. John’s team Wee Aggies held on to the top spot of the A.F.F.L. for the 18th week running and have in recent weeks had their advantage at the Summit cut to only 14 points by Andrew’s team Ballers. Nick’s Black Cats have got their tails up again and have moved into 3rd place 3 points ahead of Linda’s Team Tapas. Down in the Doldrums, Gary’s Upside Team have been stuck at

the bottom for the last 19 weeks and it is a more than likely to pick up the 1st Wooden Spoon of the Season as they are now lagging behind Richard’s Dunkrats by 92 points. Linda’s Team Tapas suffered a set back this week only scoring 2 points which have allowed Barbra’s XI to cut the deficit at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section to 19 points. Down at the other end of the table, Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans are just 10 points away from Kim’s Ginger United. T.J’s Blue Moon F.C. became the 4th team to reach the Summit of our Junior League when they took advantage of Manchester City’s 4-1 victory at Rodney Parade and replaced Olly F.C. at the top by just 6 points. This Division is going to go right down to the wire with only 14 points separating the top 5. We can’t say the same at the other end of the table, with Fleetwood Gian now allowing Tom’s Real

City to escape from the relegation zone and leaving the Codheads 48 points behind. With so few goals being scored points were hard to come by in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League. Bill’s East Fifers didn’t pick up any points this week but they still kept hold of the top spot keeping Nick’s Black Cats at bay by 12 points. Two teams are in joint 3rd place, Kenny’s Albir Boro Army & Kevin’s Two for the Road both on 507 points. The tussle at the bottom is between Gary’s Upside Team and Ross’s Caspers Bar who both failed to collect any points this week. The gap at the top of our Champion of Champions League is slowly closing with Joe’s team Keith Lard F.C.only 7 points behind the Leaders Pauline’s Vodka Army. Keith’s Max & Paddy are also in contention in 3rd place. Down at the foot of the table, would you believe it Dave’s team The Hatters have finally got off the bottom

after being there all Season and left Leo’s Power Blueboys trailing in their wake by 6 points! We have 6 teams going into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are our top scoring team for the 2nd week running Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues who scored a very respectable 35 points courtesy of Manchester City’s young talent Phil Foden. Five teams finished up with the lowest score which was a minus 1 and they were Mof Town, Terrible Trio, Third time Lucky, Doody Dan and Chicken Tikka Mosalah. Manager of the Month for February is being kindly sponsored by Jordi at the Kasbrane in Albir who provide a vast International Menu at reasonable prices along with an excellent view of the Albir Playa. With one week to go Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues have taken a slight 5 point lead over Linda’s Team Tapas. Eric’s City Slickers are in 3rd place just ahead of Sarah’s team The Dons.

There was a new team at the top of our F.A.Cup League after the 5th Round F.A.Cup Ties where Jimmy’s team Nick’s Blues have taken over from Dave’s team The Hatters who have slipped down to third. Liz’s Cookies Crew remain in 2nd place 14 points behind the Leaders. Two Liverpool supporters are Managers at the bottom of this League and are both cemented at the base Tommy’s Quantrill’s Raiders and Dave’s team The Liverpool Way are both on 3 points thanks to the Reds early exit to the hungry Wolves. All our Leagues remain very open as we head towards the last third of the season. Based on past History it suggests that the teams left with Players in the F.A.Cup will have a much better chance of lifting our much sought after Fantasy League Trophy. So it’s important to follow your team’s progress in all competitions by logging on to our very popular website.

JONES AND ENGLAND PREPARE TO FACE ‘GREATEST TEAM EVER’ IN CARDIFF The mind games began last week for England’s huge trip to Principality Stadium this weekend. And they continued on Thursday as Eddie Jones named his team to take on Wales in the battle of the unbeaten teams left in the 2019 Championship. The team news was that Jack Nowell and Ben Moon come in to start for the injured Chris Ashton and Mako Vunipola. But more on that below, first we have to address Jones’ quotes to accompany his team news this Saturday. England are on a run of four Test wins in a row, including back-to-back bonus-point victories over Ireland and France to kick off this year’s Championship and put them top of the pile. They are the bookies favourites for this weekend and have won the last five meetings between the two sides in the Guinness Six Nations.

But in Exeter Chiefs duo Nowell and Moon he has two proven internationals to swell his options.

The loss of both Ashton and Vunipola is undoubtedly a blow for Jones who is already without Maro Itoje and Dylan Hartley.

The two changes to the starting XV were injury-enforced and largely expected. But it is on the bench that Jones

has made his most interesting calls, with both Brad Shields and Joe Cokanasiga included for the first time.

Preferente review

Preferente Group Four leaders CF Intercity were held to only their second draw this season, as play-off hopefuls Alicante University got a point at home in a goaless match. One of the surprise results saw CD Almoradi slip out of the top three for the first time in months as they succumbed two-one in front of their home crowd against UD Ilicitana. Villajoyosa CF are now third, but had to work for

by Alex Trelinski

their two-one win at bottom club, Villena, with second-placed Hercules B winning two-nil at Elda. Benidorm CD stay three points above the relegation zone, after losing two-one at Rojales to CD Thader, whilst CD Torrevieja remain above Villena, as they went down two-one at the Nelson Mandela stadium to Orihuela B. This Sunday sees CF Intercity welcome fourth-

placed CFI Alicante, on the back of their two-one victory over Benferri, whilst Hercules play Callosa. Villajoyosa go to Redovan, and Almoradi will look to boost their play-off bid with a victory at Benidorm, whilst at the bottom, Torrevieja five points adrift of safety, make the short journey to Benferri. Finally there´s an early Sunday kick-off of 10.00 am for the mid-table meeting of Orihuela and Thader.

OLD ENEMIES CLASH ENGLAND will face a hostile atmosphere tomorrow in the Principality Stadium, Cardiff in this weekend´s titanic Six Nations clash against Wales(kick-off 5.45 pm, live on BBC 1). Both teams have their opening two matches, but the English have looked the more impressive in terms of performance. Wales have lost only two of their last 14 home matches in the Six Nations but both were against England

by Alex Trelinski

and the old rivals are favourites again this year after their eye-catching victories over Ireland and France. England loose-head prop Ellis Genge has vowed to do things his own way after being tasked with filling in for the “best in the world” in Mako Vunipola. The Leicester Tiger´s player will replace the injured Vunipola in the squad for Saturday’s Cardiff

showdown. The Welsh full-back Leigh Halfpenny is back in contention for selection, having missed out since suffering concussion in early November in his side´s win over Australia. Elsewhere, France will look to avoid three straight defeats as they play Scotland in Paris tomorrow, whilst on Sunday, Ireland will be away to wooden-spoon favourites Italy in Rome.
