Expat lad dies after one-hour ambulance wait after football by Laurence Dollimore

A BRITISH boy has died after waiting almost an hour for an ambulance to take him to hospital in Alicante. Witnesses say the nine-yearold collapsed after running into a friend while playing football on La Zenia beach on Tuesday. His grandmother and friends called 112 while performing resuscitation methods, but a basic life support crew did not arrive until 25 minutes later. The much-needed Emergency Medical Attention Service (SAMU) ambulance did not arrive until 40 minutes after the call. Continued Page 3

SEVEN DAY WEEKENDER A

nother short working week for those who don’t work then I suppose its another week of seeing more visitors along the areas of the Costa Blanca and one day less to visit the bank or suchlike activities. So with Easter behind us again until 2019 we can take the time to reflect on the sure fact that we should now at least see that the days and nights are drawing out and becoming a little warmer. Some places have seen temperatures of up to 28 degrees this week and Easter although being early was rather pleasant. Unlike the UK, which has a very grey, dark wet and dismal time and the only sign of spring are the daffodils that have weathered

the storm and make a delightful display along the roadside. A sad week for football fans after the departure of a much loved hero of both Chelsea. With yet more teenage street killings in London after a gang related revenge attack saw 17 year old caught in the crossfire of another drive-by shooting; and a student of 18 years becoming the 55th victim of London 2018 murder spree. It seems that the reported death toll in London now makes it more dangerous than New York. Not forgetting that when one is faced with the self-protection of one’s home and family that it can result in a outcome of being the accused. In a case this week that has seen a 78

year old pensioner in London facing a murder charge, this has reignited the debate over the rights of homeowners to defend themselves against intruders. With the doom and gloom of more than the British weather to report on I’m thinking that being an expat in Spain has more than the weather of appeal.

Football Fatality From front page. Health workers said the three SAMUs operating on the Orihuela Coast were busy providing nonpriority services at the time and none were at their base. The three in operation - one in Guardamar del Segura (25 minutes from the scene), another in Torrevieja (15 minutes away) and one located

only five minutes away in Cabo Roig - were all making transfers at the time. It was not until 55 minutes after the accident that the boy, who by this time had an extremely faint pulse, was taken to Quiron Hospital in Torrevieja. He fell into a coma due to lack of oxygen to the brain. A medical helicopter

transferred him to Alicante General Hospital but he died at 5pm on Wednesday, 24 hours after the accident. Witnesses are now blasting the late arrival of the emergency services, who said they had to travel almost 40 km from Orihuela to La Zenia. The boy’s family are also angry that when the SAMU team

arrived they insisted that the boy’s injuries had been caused by a blow from a ball rather than the collision others witnessed. Orihuela town hall lamented the loss of the child and offered condolences to his family. Family and friends will be taking flowers to the beach where the accident occurred.

BRITISH Pensioner admits fleeing to Alicante to avoid rape trial by Laurence Dollimore

A BRITISH pensioner has admitted fleeing to Spain to avoid a rape trial. Jeffrey Waite, 65, from Hartlepool, appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court to confirm he had absconded from the UK.

He was picked up in Alicante last month after fleeing to the area in 2016. Police confirmed he had been living up and down the coast living out of a camper van. Waite, who is set to face trial in September

for five rapes, was made the subject of a European Arrest Warrant after he failed to appear for trial in August 2016. Wearing a thick dark coat and glasses, with a slightly tanned complexion in the dock, he spoke only to confirm his name and say he

could not hear at one point. He admitted breaching bail by failing to turn up to court in 2016, while his defence claimed he left due to ‘significant health problems’. Prosecutor Paul Cleasby said: “He has been at large for the best part of two years.”

Toll free protest AS part of its ongoing campaign of protest, supporters of Catalonian independence dismantled barriers at various motorway toll booths, allowing motorists to temporarily pass through for free. The incident happened on Easter Sunday, one of the busiest travel days of the year, at the AP-7 in Barcelona and

by Simon Russell

Tarragona and the C-32 at El Vendrell. The action was taken by a group calling itself the Committee for the Defence of the Republic and hooded protestors stormed the barriers while toll booth staff watched but felt unable to interfere. Cameras were also covered so

that cars passing through could not be identified at a later date. The toll operators contacted the police and after a few hours the booths were running as normal. The protest is at the jailing of pro-separatist MP’s and campaigners as well as the possible extradition of Carles Puigdemont, the movement’s leader, to face trial for sedition.

UK immigrant ring busted THE Guardia Civil have arrested seven people in northern Spain on charges of organising the illegal smuggling of immigrants into the UK. It is alleged that the group were arranging the transportation of Albanians, Iraqis, Syrians, Afghanis and Pakistanis via ferries in the northern ports of Santander and Santurzi. Some of these people had been transferred from camps in France;

by Matthew Richards

others came directly to Spain through various methods. Once here they were housed until they could be stowed away in trailers, shipping containers and the like on the ferries. They were able to do this by having access to the normally restricted parking lots for shipping companies using the ferries. The Guardia Civil became

suspicious of the amount of Albanian nationals trying to enter the Santurzi area, prompting the investigation that led to the arrests at the end of March. The seven men arrested are a mix of Spanish, Iraqis and Albanians. It is believed that they are part of a much larger network of people smugglers and the investigation remains open at this stage while further arrests have not been ruled out.

Elephant dies after circus lorry smash EASTER Monday can be chaotic on the roads at the best of times, but motorists in Murcia topped the usual incidents after having their journey held up by a herd of elephants. Five of the giant beasts were being transported in a circus lorry when the truck overturned. Sadly, one of the elephants died while the remaining four got loose and started wandering over the busy road, stopping understandably surprised motorists. Two of the surviving elephants are being treated for injuries while two people were also hurt in the crash. There was a delay of around two hours while the dead beast was removed and the other four were rounded up by handlers. The circus carrying the elephant, Circo Gottani, have

by Matthew Richards

said that the animals were being transported perfectly legally and have even suggested that they may have been sabotaged. However the incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of animals in circuses; many of these have now been banned in parts of Spain. A week earlier a hippopotamus escaped from a circus in Extremadura, causing panic as it wandered through a nearby town.

Great British Benefit Handout stars fined over ‘educational’ term-time holiday in Spain A Reality TV couple have defended taking their kids out of school during term time because they ‘flew over volcanoes’ and ‘learnt a bit of Spanish’. Scott and Leanne Gavin were taken to court after three of their four kids missed a week of school for a trip to Fuerteventura. The parents denied any wrongdoing and said the school was fully aware they were taking their children on holiday between June 19 and 23 last year. The Gavins, who recently appeared on

by Simon Russell

Channel 5’s Great British Benefit Handout, also refused to pay a fixed penalty notice for the absences. Dad Scott, 33, who has set up a mini-zoo and exotic animals business, said he wanted to take his family on holiday due to the amount of media attention he and his family were receiving. He told Liverpool Magistrates’ Court: “There were reporters harassing the children outside the house. “Also, the exotic animal visits business we run is

seasonal – we are busiest at half-terms and school holidays, not during school term. “The school knew we were taking the children on holiday with us.” Gavin then claimed the trip was ‘educational’ for the children. She added: “They learned about geography as we flew over the different countries, also about volcanoes. “Two of the children learned how to swim, and speak a little bit of Spanish.” Jason Hollywood, head

teacher of the school, said he had a constant problem with the Gavins over unauthorised time off and lateness. He told the court: “It has been the worst I have ever witnessed in my 26-year long career.” Magistrates found the Gavins guilty of being parents of a child of compulsory school age who failed to attend regularly. They were each fined £350, and ordered to pay £400 each towards prosecution costs at the rate of £30 each per week.

Fiestas continue

THE San Ferrer continues until Monday, festivities in l’ Alfas del Pi 9 April. They will be which started on Thursday centred on the Captivador Chapel which is located at the crossroads between Alfas, La Nucia and Altea. As usual there will be dancing, sporting events and

by Matthew Richards

children’s activities as well as the religious aspects such as the presentation of the “ex ossibus” relic and mass. The festival has special meaning this year as, since

Sant Vicent Ferrer died in April 1419, they mark the start of the commemorations leading up the 600th anniversary; these began with a blessing of an image of the saint carved by sculptor Tonico Ballester.

Others involved A SMALL group is thought to be behind the disappearance of Scottish expat, Lisa Brown, who has been missing since November 2015. Her brother, Craig Douglas, believes it is not only her ex lover Simon Corner that police should be hunting for. His views came as her family issues a new public plea for information, with a 114.000 euro award for information. It comes just weeks after Corner, 35, who was

by Laurence Dollimore

the main suspect in the investigation, went on the run. Douglas, 48, believes that now Corner has absconded it could lead to the break down of the ‘wall of silence’ around his sister’s disappearance among the expat community. One police source told the Weekender he believes he ‘may well be lying low on the Spanish mainland, somewhere like Alicante, until it all dies down or

more arrests are made.’ He is now being sought after twice failing to sign on at his local police station in Cadiz. Further details of the investigation cannot be revealed at this time. Lisa was reported missing in November 2015 after she failed to pick up son Marco from school. He now lives with father Tony. The Guardia Civil are currently leading the investigation but officials are urging for ‘citizen collaboration’.

FRIDAY 6TH APRIL 2018

East meets west THE full timetable has now been announced for the eighth Manga and Japanese Culture Fair which is held in Alicante this weekend (7 and 8 April). International guest stars include Inoue Kiyonubu, who is founding member and guitarist of Luna Sea, a major Japanese rock-pop group. This is his first visit to Spain and he will be performing an exclusive live show at the convention. Other guests include Kenichi Yoshida from the Yoshida Brothers band and YouTubers NekoJitaBlog. The latter are a Japanese and Spanish pair who post about the cultural differences between Spain and Japan.

by Matthew Richards

As well as performers there will be artistic displays, commercial and noncommercial stands and a large food and drink area reflecting Japanese and oriental cuisine. On the more serious side of things this is the 150th anniversary of official diplomaticrelations between Spain and Japan; to mark this Naohito Watanabe, the Japanese consul, will give a presentation on relations between the two countries. Overall there are more than 200 activities, stands and exhibits spread over a 25,000 square metre area, ranging

from cos-play to martial arts. There is also plenty for gamers with 60 video consoles ranging from virtual reality to old school gaming consoles. He had ascended to the viewing point which overlooks the waterfall marking the landmark and leaned on a wooden rail which broke. He fell about 50 metres onto rocks and was probably killed instantly.

Guns and swords seized

Vista death plunge Two ambulances attended the scene but declared the man dead after about 45 minutes. The area has been cordoned off by the Guardia Civil and an investigation into the tragedy is likely to follow. The deceased has not been named at this stage but is said to be 60-yearsold; his wife and another companion were with him when he fell.

Expats nicked for marijuana farm TWO expats have been arrested after more than 800 marijuana plants were seized from an indoor hash farm in Pedreguer. The Albanians, 22 and 23, were seized after police probed the high use of electricity enough to power 60 homes - in one part of the village.

by Laurence Dollimore

The Guardia Civil took over two months to slowly work out which property had illegally connected to the grid to obtain the power to grow the crop. The investigation began in mid-January after police were made aware of the strong smell

of marijuana in the Alicante village. They managed to whittle it down to around a dozen homes, which they put under surveillance. Although both the terrain and the security measures taken by the tenants made it difficult to observe from outside the

agents continued until they were able to obtain a search warrant for the property. Once inside the house they found four rooms given over to the growing of the plants. They have now seized dozens of lamps, fans, extractors and carbon filters, which were used to hide the smell.

POLICE have arrested a 47-yearold man who regularly beat his wife and teenage daughter. The man, from Elda, was found to have a huge collection of weapons, including a gun, a Japanese sword and several machetes. It is understood he regularly threatened his family with the weapons.

Bottling it SPANISH airports are set to cap the price of bottled water at â‚Ź1, following a string of angry complaints from customers. Aena will force all airports in Spain to reduce the price of water sold in shops and vending machines. It comes after officials at Alicante Elche airport took notice of the recurrent complaints of travellers and agreed to set the new prices. The new rule enforces that stores must cap prices of 33cl bottles at â‚Ź1, while vending machines must offer 50cl bottles for the same price. 19 stores across seven airports have already implemented this rule in Palma de Mallorca, Girona, Madrid Barajas, Bilbao, Tenerife Sur, Santiago and Vigo. Other airports including Malaga, Valencia and Barcelona El Prat, are set to change prices in the near future.

Peter said: “We started on Calle Gerona which is the the Main Street in the British area of Benidorm, it’s very busy with stag and hen parties but we were aiming our business at people who

really love music and love singing and want to get away from the big party atmosphere. “Due to the large groups of party goers we had problems because they changed the atmosphere and this affected the people who wanted to really sing.” Last year he said he was contacted by the Britain’s Got Talent production company and hosted the auditions in Benidorm for the show.

Now the same production company Thames TV - are filming the X Factor auditions at the expat haunt. The auditions will run on Friday 6th with closed invitations, while aturday is open to anyone to from 10am until 4pm.

That’s gotta hurt! A PENSIONER had to have firemen rescue him from a plastic chair after his testicles became trapped. The 70-year-old from Torrevieja was sitting naked on the chair before taking a shower, when he tried to stand up and

by Laurence Dollimore

realised his predicament. He managed to raise the alarm from two carers, who called in the emergency services. When fireman arrived they discovered

that his testicles had dropped through the slats in the folding chair, and got stuck. They decided to cut away some of the plastic slats which took around half an hour. The man was then

treated for minor injuries at the University Hospital of Torrevieja. A spokesman for Alicante fire service explained that it was one of the ‘strangest’ call outs they had ever received and first thought it was a prank.

Can I keep my ISA & Premium Bonds if I’m a Spanish Resident? By Tracy Storer

Senior Partner Chorus Financial

The short answer to this is ‘yes’. It is a question I get asked regularly and whilst the answer to this question is yes, the answer to ‘Should I keep them?’ would be different as ISA’s and Premium bonds (in fact the majority of NS&I products) are more hassle than they are worth when you leave the UK. Around two years ago, I met with a potential client who had been living in Spain for over 6 years. While living in the UK they had a financial adviser who had rightly

maximised their annual ISA allowance meaning they were able to invest their savings tax free, and in addition to this they also had a modest amount of Premium Bonds. The first thing I pointed out to the client is that NS&I (National Savings and Investments), are a stateowned savings bank in the UK and whilst you can keep these products open should you move overseas, you cannot pay into them and they no longer offer any tax benefits. This means that a £25 premium bond win or a 0.5% annual gain would mean a costly trip to your Spanish accountant to declare the gains. To make matters worse, the Premium Bond prize pot has recently been

reduced to a paltry 1.25% of the total holdings, with each £1 invested having a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning that minimum prize of £25. Over the last 2 years she received just 0.5% from her ISA and 2 £25 prizes, all of which she had to declare to the Spanish tax authorities. She also had to put them on her overseas asset declaration, the Modelo 720. Her accountancy fees during that period were over 6 times her gains. Since the introduction of Common Reporting Standards, risking not declaring these gains is out of the question, as these would’ve been automatically reported to the Spanish tax authorities. During that meeting 2 years

ago I had recommended to that potential client that we set up an investment plan designed for Spanish residents – this one happened to be offered by The Prudential, a company very well known among British expats, although this is just one of several options available. Over the last 2 years the plan I recommended, which would’ve blended 2 funds, the Prufund Cautious and Growth, would’ve returned over 10% after ALL fees. This is a very good return and results such as this will vary, but as these are fully compliant and legally recognized products for Spanish residents, her accountancy bill would’ve been zero. Do you hold bonds, ISAs or investment plans designed for

UK residents but live in Spain? To find out about more suitable options, please call me today to book a free consultation on 693 107 044 or email t.storer@chorusfinancial.es. Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Double trouble

Outrage as Ryan Air doubles price of seat reservations

PASSENGERS have been left outraged after Ryanair doubled the cost of reserving a standard seat. The budget airline is raising the price from £2 to £4, meaning families could be charged £20 extra per holiday just to sit together. Ryanair has also increased the price of its extra legroom seats from £11 to £15, as revealed by Money Saving Expert.

by Laurence Dollimore

It comes as British holidaymakers accuse the budget airline of purposefully splitting up groups and families so that they pay the extra fee to have seats together. Dozens of passengers have complained about the policy, including one party of 20 golfers who were flying from the UK to Spain. According to one of the

group, three people paid for legroom and the remaining 17 were all placed in middle seats. Last year, a hen party was sat in 15 different rows, despite checking in four days ahead of their flight. The Civil Aviation Authority has announced that it is launching an inquiry following so many complaints.

Insurance scam alert POLICE have warned motorists about a new type of fraud that they have seen examples of recently. Usually targeting elderly or vulnerable drivers, the scammer alleges that their own car has been scraped or bumped by the driver, with some damage visible. They then kindly offer to call the “offenders” insurance

by Simon Russell

company where someone on the other end appears to authorise a payment. They then ask that the motorist advances them the sum; however the insurance agent was someone else involved in the fraud and no money will be forthcoming. The authorities have said

that if you are ever in any doubt as to any events surrounding an accident, however minor, you should always involve the local police. The scam seems currently confined to northern Spain, but these types of fraud have a habit of spreading quickly before people become aware of them.

PENSIONER ARRESTED OVER THE FATAL STABBING

A

pensioner arrested over the fatal stabbing of an intruder during a suspected burglary has been bailed until May, police said. Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, was arrested on suspicion of murder after fatally wounding the intruder during a suspected burglary at his home at around 12.45am on Wednesday. Neighbours of the elderly man defended his actions, saying he should not be punished for simply protecting himself.

He has been bailed to return to a south London police station in early May pending further inquiries, the Metropolitan Police said. Officers were called to reports of a burglary in progress after two men entered a house in South Park Crescent in Hither Green, south-east London, police said. One suspect, armed with a screwdriver, forced the homeowner into his kitchen when he discovered them, while his accomplice went

Back In upstairs, the force said. Detectives believe a struggle ensued between “one of the males and the homeowner” and the intruder, 37, was stabbed in the upper body but they refused to confirm whether the suspect had been stabbed with the screwdriver. An eyewitness said the suspected burglar had an accomplice who dragged him towards a van before leaving him for dead. He was found collapsed in nearby Further Green Road by paramedics

from London Ambulance Service, who took him to a central London hospital where he died at 3.37am. Adam Lake, who lives near the scene, said he did not feel safe from crime and that Mr Osborn-Brooks was “just protecting himself”. He said: “He doesn’t deserve to be punished for defending himself, and the neighbours that I’ve spoken to all agree that the priority needs to be to support him after everything that he’s been through. “He was just protecting himself after all.” One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the homeowner had been retired for 26 years. A witness, who lives in the road, told the Press Association he saw an accomplice try to rescue the suspect just before midnight before fleeing the scene. He recalled seeing a white Vauxhall Astra van pull up next to a man “moaning and groaning” on the street who was “bleeding heavily from his chest through his shirt”. Its driver attempted to drag the man into the vehicle before driving off north when he noticed he was being watched, he said.

The witness told the Press Association: “People have been talking about a screwdriver but this wasn’t a screwdriver wound, this was a knife. The wound was an inch long. “I think that it was a knife and I think from what my partner said that the black guy (the driver) pulled it out and threw it away. “The man on the ground was wearing a blue T-shirt and it was pulled up. I think he was dead already. His pupils were completely dilated.” The second suspect fled the scene and has yet to be found. The pensioner, who suffered bruising to his arms, was initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but was further arrested on suspicion of murder, the Met said. At least five forensic officers entered the house, guarded by police, on South Park Crescent just before 1pm on Wednesday. A large purple forensic tent was erected by the front door. The dead suspect’s next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

HEALTH AGENCY WARNS UK PARENTS AS SCARLET FEVER CASES SOAR

E

ngland’s health agency is warning parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms of scarlet fever as infections continue to soar nationwide. Between mid-September and the week ending March 18, more than 15,370 cases of the age-old killer were reported to Public Health England. “Greater awareness and improved reporting practices may have contributed to this increase,” said Nick Phin, deputy director at Public Health England. Identified by a bright red rash that looks and feels like sandpaper, scarlet fever is a highly contagious disease caused by the same bacteria behind strep throat, group A Streptococcus pyogenes. As scarlet fever cases rise, baffled researchers investigate Public Health England is advising parents to be on the lookout for these symptoms, as if caught early, the illness is mild and can be treated with antibiotics. Early treatment can also

reduce the chances of complications, such a pneumonia, and prevent the spread of infection. “We are monitoring the situation closely and remind parents to be aware of the symptoms of scarlet fever and to contact their (family physician) for assessment if they think their child might have it,” Phin said in a statement. “It is a very contagious disease and much more common in children under 10 than teenagers or adults,” said Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK. “Scarlet fever used to be a lot more common than it is now, but GPs are noticing more cases than in previous years at the moment.” From the plague to polio ... 10 diseases you (wrongly) thought were gone In recent years, England has seen a surge in cases, with cases tripling in 2014 from the seasonal average of 4,700 in 2013 to 15,637 in 2014, a recent study found. Infections continued to rise to

13

FRIDAY 6TH APRIL 2018

nearly 20,000 in 2016, a 50-year high for the United Kingdom, according to the analysis. The health agency is also pushing family physicians, pediatricians and other health practitioners to be aware of the infection when assessing patients. “Guidance on management of outbreaks in schools and nurseries has just been updated, and research continues to further investigate the rise,” Theresa Lamagni, a senior epidemiologist at Public Health England, told CNN in a previous report. “We encourage parents to be aware of the symptoms of scarlet fever and to contact their (general practitioner) if they think their child might have it.”

BRITAIN’S car industry looks to be keeping its wheels on post-Brexit with the announcement of a £100 million investment Vauxhall’s van-making plant at Luton. French parent company PSA has said the nextVivarovanwillbebuiltattheplantinamove that could also see its Peugeot and Citroenbranded vans also assembled in the UK. PSA announced it has made the commitment “despite Brexit uncertainties” and the move secures 1,400 jobs beyond 2030. The French group took over General Motors’ European operation last year – inheriting the Vauxhall and Opel brands – and there has been intense speculation about the future of the Luton and Ellesmere Port, where the Astra is built, ever since. In 2017, Luton produced 70,000 Vivaro-branded vans. The next generation model will take on board Citroen and Peugeot technology and PSA hopes to produce 100,000 of the vehicles a year – if targets are met, extra jobs could follow. The UK was chosen despite looming Brexit – and yet unknown border and trade controls because many parts will be shipped to Luton – ahead of Germany and Poland. Factories in these countries lacked a paint facility suitable for vans and the cost of installing one was too high. PSA group chief executive Carlos Tavares said: “This is a major milestone for the future of the Luton plant and a key enabler to serve our ambitions in the commercial vehicle market.” There has been a factory building vehicles at Luton since 1905, and whatever the postBrexit world looks like for the UK, the deal is a major fillip for the Government and Brexiteers. Business Secretary Greg Clark said: “Today’s decision is a vote of confidence in Vauxhall’s high-skilled workforce and the UK’s world leading automotive sector.” The are 1,300 workers at Ellesmere Port and Unite general secretary Len McCluskey – who took part in the Luton talks – said: “The investment into Luton is very welcome, but we do expect to hear similar plans for Ellesmere Port, where the workforce has been just as loyal and is just as deserving of a secure future but continues to live with a cloud hanging over it.” Formal Brexit trade negotiations with the EU have yet to get underway; but in the Palace of Westminster a committee of MPs hit the brakes on David Davis’ ambition of a tailor-made deal.

The Brexit Secretary wants a gleaming new model, fresh from the showroom; a deal that goes further than the agreement reached between Canada and the EU last year; what he likes to call “Canada plus, plus, plus.” MPs on the Brexit committee have other ideas. Despite being split – a bit of engine trouble under the bonnet – the committee has urged the government not to rule out continued membership of the European Economic Area. The EEA covers Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein. They get access to the single market – with free movement of people, goods, services and money – without being EU members but have little say in laws or policy. Another option, said the committee, was returning to Efta, the European Free Trade Area, which includes the same three countries plus Switzerland – Britain left in 1972 but could rejoin as a step closer to becoming an EEA member. The recommendations in the committee report have previously been rejected by Mr Davis – and the committee was split 10-6 over sending it forward; Brexiteers led Jacob Rees-Mogg voted against it. Committee chairman Hilary Benn said it was “not surprising” there were disagreements, given the whole country and Parliament was divided on Brexit; but said there was agreement on some issues. He did not believe a trade deal would be on the table by the autumn in time for a “meaningful vote” but instead a “political declaration” about the brave new Brexit world. And he believes the committee report would help politicians judge what was in front of them against a series of tests – the 15 put forward in the report “set the bar high”...but were based on earlier pledges by Theresa May and Mr Davis. Mr Benn said the government had to “face reality”. He said: “It is vital that UK businesses are able to continue to trade freely and sell services into our largest market after we leave; without additional costs or burdens of a hard border in Northern Ireland, and we maintain close cooperation on defence, security, data and information-sharing and consumer safety.”

Recovery continues D

ETAILED data from 2017 shows that the recovery in the Alicante housing market continues apace, but still has a long way to go to reach the peak levels of a decade ago. The best rises continue to be coastal areas with the inland market still sluggish but improving. As well as the end of the financial crisis, foreign demand, more investment and low prices compared to other parts of Spain have all helped

by Simon Russell

drive the steady recovery. Last year 40,156 domestic properties were sold, although in the 2007 peak the figure was 72,891. The average price per square metre of house sales in towns and cities was €1,025, compared to €1,794 in 2007. In Benidorm for example a 90 square metre property now costs an average €153,000, 35% less than in 2007 when it was

€236,000. New builds are also picking up with over 6,000 started last year although in 2004 this was 53,000 – a level most experts agree will not be seen again and with hindsight was unsustainable. The one statistic that does compare to the boom years is rentals, which have actually surpassed the levels of ten years ago in urban centres such as Alicante.

H&M profits drop SWEDISH firm Hennes and Mauritz, commonly known as H&M, saw a 44% drop in profits in their last trading quarter, while the fashion retailers shares fell 7% after the results were announced. H&M are a fixture in many towns in the Costa Blanca area, especially

shopping centres where they usuallyoccupy one of the largest units selling affordable clothes for men, women and children. They had a net profit of 1,400 million kroner (€135 million) for the period from 1 December to end of February, 44% less than

the same period last year. The drop was attributed to poor sales, partly down to the unusually cold weather, as well as product price reductions. Their CEO has said that 2018 will be a year of major reorganisation for the group which has almost 5,000 stores worldwide.

Hit and run victim World’s 50 Best was Irish boy Restaurants hits Bilbao THE family of a ten year old Irish boy hit by a car in Tenerife has confirmed he has died in hospital from his injuries. Ten-year-old Carter Carson from County Antrim was struck by the car in the resort of Adeje on Maundy Thursday and lost his fight for life the next day. The

driver of the car did not stop at the time although Spanish police say that two men have now been arrested in connection with the tragedy. Friends of the Carson family started a campaign to raise the €3,500 needed

to fly back the boy’s body and this was raised within 48 hours. Carter’s father, who was with him at the time of the accident, said he “touched so many hearts with his smile and was our world.” The Irish Foreign and Commonwealth Office are lending assistance to the family.

Tourist overboard NEARLY a dozen boats were called out to search for a tourist who fell overboard from a cruise liner. The rescue boats scoured the seas off Mazarrón on Tuesday morning for the Saudi Arabian tourist, who had somehow fallen from the Norwegian Spirit. The boat, which had around 3,000 holidaymakers aboard,

by Laurence Dollimore

raised the alarm in the early hours of the morning and also took part in the search before informing the coastguards that it would carry on to Alicante where it is expected to dock today. The Guardia Civil launched eight boats as well as two coastguard helicopters to locate the 34-year-old man. Authorities are still

unclear as to how he ended up in the sea. A spokesman for the coastguard said: “We were alerted at 2.15am to a man who had gone overboard from the Norwegian Spirit, around 30 miles southwest of the port city of Cartagena. “Several vessels are taking part in an ongoing search along with two coastguard helicopters and a plane.”

THE most prestigious international event in gastronomy, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, will be held in Spain this year. Recognised as the most sought-after title in the culinary world, the awards are voted for by international chefs, restaurateurs, gourmands and critics and after being held in Melbourne last year, the 16th edition will return to Europe this summer. Kicking off on June 16, the five day culinary celebration will take place in the Basque city of Bilbao, and will welcome some of the biggest names in gastronomy. San Sebastián is

by Laurence Dollimore

known for boasting one of the highest concentrations of Michelin Star restaurants in the world - only beaten by Kyoto in Japan - and the region is renowned for its famous pintxos bars. Since the awards launched in 2002, Spanish restaurants have won the best in the world a staggering seven times, with El Bulli taking the top spot five times and El Cellar de Can Roca twice. Spanish and Basque restaurants regularly place highly on the list, with three winning spots in the top ten last year -

El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, 3rd, Asador Etxebarri in Axpe, 6th and Mugaritz in San Sebastián, 9th. President of the Vizcaya Regional Council, Unai Rementeria, said: “We are sure that all visitors will feel at home, we are a small territory in which gastronomy is not only a pleasure but also a culture. Basque cuisine reflects our values as a country: it is a mixture of tradition, respect and culture.” There will be a number of private and public events across the city, such as an “AfterAfter” party in San Mamés football stadium

Netflix and chill

A new Spanish directed film is allegedly the scariest of 2018 NETFLIX’S latest horror film, directed by a Spanish director, is so terrifying people cannot watch it until the end. The most spine-chilling part is that it’s based on real events. Spanish language film, Veronica, tells the story of a teenage girl who attempts to call upon her dead father by using a Ouija board with her siblings. After passing out during the ritual, Veronica is then

by Laurence Dollimore

subjected to three days of unexplained, ghostly incidents, which eventually leads to her untimely death. Directed by one of the most famous names in Spanish horror cinema, Paco Plaza, the film is unnerving viewers because they cannot work out what part of the story is real and what is fiction. The movie is loosely based on the 1990 ‘Vallecas

case’, in which a young girl, named Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, mysteriously died after playing with a Ouija board. Estefania held a seance at her school in Vallecas, a town south of Madrid, in a bid to make contact with a friend’s boyfriend who had died in a motorbike accident. Reports say a teacher interrupted the ceremony and friends claim they saw smoke go into the girl’s

Ibiza passes early closing law RUMOURS that clubs in Ibiza would be forced to close their doors early have proven to be true as San Antonio council declared all clubs in a busy part of the town would need to shut by 3am. The new law applies to the West End

by Simon Russell

neighbourhood where many of the main clubs are located; previously they were allowed to open until 5am. Outside terraces now have to be closed by midnight. Many club owners

have expressed their dismay at the new rules. A spokesman said “This will mean the death of the West End, and will drive people to other parts of the town at these times. Young Brits will now be able to eat and drink later in their own towns in the

UK than San Antonio, so why come here?” The local council has said the move is a response to the noise suffered by local residents which have been measured at 86 decibels at night – the same level as a Boeing 737 makes on take- off.

Spilling the royal beans? QUEEN Letizia’s exhusband has penned a romance that could be based on his real-life relationship with the Spanish royal. Alonso Guerrero Perez, 55, from Alcalá, near Madrid, has published El Amor De Penny Robinson (The Love of Penny Robinson) as a fictional book. But the novel tells the story of a man with the same name as the author who is suddenly thrust into the spotlight when his ex-wife becomes queen. The hero even describes how he took a nude snap of his first love, Laura, a character believed to be based on Letizia,

by Laurence Dollimore

who was a TV journalist before marrying King Felipe. Letizia married teacher Alonso, nine years her senior, in 1998 following a 10-year romance. They first met when the future Spanish queen was just 16. They got hitched in a civil ceremony in Almendralejo, Badajoz, but divorced the following year. The former journalist, now 45, met husband-to-be Felipe in 2002, while she was working for popular TV channel 24

Horas. They announced their engagement just a year later. But Letizia’s status as a divorcee caused controversy in Spain ahead of the royal wedding, thrusting Alonso into the spotlight. In his novel the male protagonist falls in love with two women - Laura and Nené. Both characters are thought to be based on Letizia although it is Nené who becomes Queen. According to Royal Central, Alonso has previously told Spanish media how his relationship with Letizia ‘has neither benefited nor harmed me’.

Letizia married Felipe in 2004 in a lavish ceremony at Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral. The royal couple have two school-age daughters. She was allowed to marry in the Catholic Church as her previous marriage had been a civil ceremony. Despite her popularity today, a book published in 2005 suggested that King Juan Carlos considered the former journalist a threat to Spain’s royal household. Polls have since shown that Felipe and Letizia’s ‘common touch’ has boosted the approval ratings of the royals.

NEWS BITES Five rescued from fire

FIVE people have been evacuated from a residential building in El Campello after a fire broke out on Monday evening. Before firefighters arrived on the scene the Guardia Civil ensured everybody was safely out of the building and one climbed to a first floor window to check nobody was trapped. The fire is believed to have been caused by cigarette butts not being properly put out before being thrown into a rubbish bin.

English on the stage

PUPILS from the three primary schools in Callosa d’en Sarria enjoyed performances from the English Theatre Group recently. The players staged “Bunny and the Farm” and “The teeth, the Mouse and the Monster” in English as part of an initiative launched by the towns Department of Education to promote the language for children in a fun setting. The venue was the Casa de la Musica and the children all clearly had a great time said organisers and teachers. On May 4 the troupe will be returning to stage a performance for Callosa’s secondary school age kids. This will be a different show to the most recent one as sessions are adapted according to age group.

Massive tailbacks after fatality THE A-3 motorway near Requena, in Northern Valencia, experienced 14 kilometre tailbacks after a fatal car crash affected traffic in both lanes. The driver, a man in his early forties, crossed the central reservation of the motorway when his vehicle then turned over several times. The man died at the scene and the only passenger, his 79-year-old mother, was badly injured. A basic life support ambulance attended her and she was transferred to the local hospital; due to the extent of her injuries she was later transferred on to Valencia General Hospital. The incident happened at mid-morning on Easter Monday and the traffic on the road was already very heavy before the crash caused major delays.

WOW-NALDO

Cristiano Ronaldo thanked Juventus fans for the standing ovation he received at the Allianz Stadium after scoring a sensational bicycle kick in a 3-0 Real Madrid win. Ronaldo grabbed the opening goal in Turin after just three minutes and added a second on the hour with a sensational overhead bicycle kick, taking him to 14 goals in this season’s competition. The Portuguese superstar surpassed himself with a breathtaking overhead hit from inside the box to help put holders Real Madrid closer to the semi-finals. “One of the most beautiful goals in the history of football,” said Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. The jeers of the home fans turned to applause and earned him a standing ovation after 64 minutes when Dani Carvajal crossed back into the area where Ronaldo connected with an outrageous bicycle

kick. Ronaldo responded by putting his hand to his heart and giving a slight bow of gratitude to the crowd. “Obviously people are talking about my second goal... it was a spectacular goal, possibly the best of my career,” he said. “This was one of the nicest moments. To be applauded by the Juventus stadium, where so many great footballers have played, is a top moment for me. “It’s something that stays in your heart...I want to thank all the Italians who were here in the stadium and applauded me.” Ronaldo admitted he had been trying to score a goal as spectacular as that “for a long time” as he scored his 13th and 14th goal in the Champions League - five shy off his record 17. “I scored once for the national team with a bicycle kick, which hit the post and went in, but this was a bit better.

“I had been looking to score a goal like that for a long time but it depends on the circumstances of the match. Sometimes,

it doesn’t’ work, but you always have to try. I tried and I scored. “Great goal. What can I say? Fantastic. I didn’t

expect to score that goal but let’s speak about the game. I think the game was amazing, we scored three goals against Juve –

a great team. We played nice and of course I am happy I helped the team, I scored two goals. A great night.”

Champions League Liverpool Outclass Man City As Barca See Off Roma Liverpool secured an impressive 3-0 win against Manchester City in their first-leg quarter-final UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night at Anfield. Three first half goals from Mohamed Salah, AlexOxlade Chamberlain and Sadio Mane gave Liverpool the win. It is the second time Liverpool will beat Manchester City at Anfield this season after beating them 4-3 in the Premier League. Manchester City failed to direct a single shot on target in a game for the first time since 26th October 2016 against Manchester United in the League Cup. Leroy Sane had the game’s first chance on six minutes but his low strike

from the left took a slight deflection before hitting the side netting. But the it was Liverpool who took the lead through Salah on 12 minutes who slammed the into the roof of the net from a breakaway after Roberto Firmino’s initial effort was saved by Ederson. It was Salah’s 38th goal in all competitions this season. Few minutes later, Manchester City should have equalised following a counterattack only for Sane to drag his shot wide. In the 21st minute Liverpool doubled their lead off a brilliant sh9t outside the box from Chamberlain. Liverpool continued to pile the pressure and were rewarded as Mane made it 3-0 on 31 minutes as he

headed in Salah’s pinpoint cross. One minute of into first half added time Nicolas Otamendi hit a low shot which went just wide. Liverpool were forced into a substitution on 52 minutes as Salah went off with a knock and was replaced by Georgino Wijnaldum. Mane should have extended Liverpool’s lead on 71 minutes but did not connect properly with Dominic Solanke’s cross. City thought they had scored on 84th minute but Gabriel Jesus’ effort was ruled 0ut for offside. At the Camp Nou, Barcelona secured a 4-1 win against AS Roma also on Wednesday night. Own goals from Daniele

De Rossi (38th minute) Kostantinos Manolas (55th minute) as well as a strike from Gerard Pique (59th minute) put Barcelona 3-0 up.

With 10 minutes left, Edin Dzeko pulled a goal back for Roma to give them a glimmer of hope going into the second-leg. But Luis Suarez

restored Barcelona’s threegoal advantage with three minutes left. The return legs for both games will come up on Tuesday.

‘Wilder waiting for AJ offer’ Deontay Wilder is “ready and waiting” to receive an offer for a fight against Anthony Joshua, says his co-manager Shelly Finkel. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealed on Wednesday how he initiated negotiations for a huge heavyweight showdown with WBC champion Wilder, and is confident a deal can be reached with the American’s team. With Hearn due to hold a meeting with Joshua and his trainer Rob McCracken

on Thursday, Finkel is expecting the Matchroom Boxing boss to return with terms for the bout. ”We’re ready and waiting,” Finkel exclusively told Sky Sports. “He’s [Eddie Hearn] coming back to us with an offer and we’re waiting for it today. ”The fact is - we want the fight. Deontay has sent out a personal letter to the public and to Joshua: ‘I’m ready to fight. I’m ready to fight you at a 60-40. I’m ready to fight you in the UK. My team, you asked

to meet with yours - they’re ready. Just let us know when and there is nothing on our side as an impediment.’ ”He ended it with: ‘I can’t wait to meet you in the ring,’ that’s what we want. It’s the only thing we’re pursuing. That’s the only thing to do.” Finkel reiterated that Wilder would accept a 40 per cent split of the purse, although he believes the unbeaten ‘Bronze Bomber’ will create more public demand than Wladimir Klitschko or Joseph Parker. ”The deal was 50-

50 with Klitschko,” said Finkel. “The [Wilder] fight should be bigger than Klitschko. “We already said we would accept less than Klitschko. The fight with Parker was 33 [per cent to Parker]. “This is way bigger and Deontay is way bigger than Parker. We said we would take 40. “Hopefully today or tomorrow, we’ll have an offer from them, because that’s what he’s said he’s doing.”

Nadal not 100 percent for Davis Cup World number one Rafael Nadal will play his first match since the Australian Open on Friday when he takes on Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Davis Cup quarter-finals. Nadal, 31, has been sidelined since retiring with a hip problem against Marin Cilic in his Melbourne quarter-final. Despite his twomonth absence from the tour, Nadal reclaimed the

top ranking after Roger Federer’s surprise loss to world number 175 Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami Open last week. The 16-time grand slam champion, representing Spain, will face Germany’s Kohlschreiber in Valencia on his favoured clay surface. “It’s been a tough few months,” admitted Nadal ahead of his comeback. “But I am excited to be

back and hopefully it will be a positive week for me.” Coach and long-time friend Carlos Moya urged fans to be patient as Nadal plots his European spring campaign which, if all goes to script, will see him clinch an 11th French Open in June. “He is not at 100 per cent yet, but if he can win a match or two, it can help him,” said Moya. Fellow Spaniard David

Ferrer plays Germany’s world number four Alexander Zverev in the other rubber. Nadal, who has won his last 22 Davis Cup singles matches, will then take on Zverev in the first match of the reverse singles on Sunday. He has not lost a Davis Cup singles match since a debut defeat by Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic in 2004.
