Your Weekend Starts Here!
FIVE DAY
CLIFFHANGER The narrow streets of Altea old town had a new tourist attraction last weekend after an accident that left an Irish tourist spending his first week of holiday battling to get his crashed car removed from a precarious and life endangering position, suspended on a rubber tree. Ciaran Wolbeek, 45, miraculously escaped with minor injuries, from an accident that occurred shortly after he arrived in the town
last Friday following a long drive down from Madrid. Attempting a complicated manoeuvre on arrival at his rented house in Carrer Sol, so he could unload shopping and luggage, Ciaran misjudged a steep slope on a side road and accidentally drove through a plastered wall. The car, a Spanish registered Toyota Rav 4, rolled over on its roof and slid down a steep embankment, before coming to rest at the base of a rubber tree overlooking Carrer del Bola below. Ethical Investing - It is no longer just something for a few tree-hugging individuals In a world that is becoming more and more focused about the environment and ways to protect it, it is no wonder that I am being asked more and more about ethical investments. Ethical investors were historically driven by their focus on doing what was best for the environment and communities and often this meant their investment could sometimes suffer. But times are changing and investing ethically can now be very rewarding. When a company owned by Warren Buffett (one of the world’s most successful investors) bought a stake in BYD, then a little-known Chinese car company, some sceptics were ridiculing the 2008 deal. Car and Driver, an industry magazine, commented that it was “hard to take BYD seriously” because many of its cars seemed to be copies of older Japanese models, while their performance was lacklustre. “We drive faster in our driveways,” the magazine said. But Mr Buffettis now more than vindicated and the Chinese company’s focus on electric cars and climate-friendly motoring is
delivering on the promise concealed in its acronym — Build Your Dreams. Its shares are trading at roughly 21 times forward earnings, or 2.5 times the ratio when Mr Buffett bought in. The deal stands as an example of how investing in renewable technologies can pay off and since 2008, BYD has become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles. The BYD investment story is a small part of a much bigger trend. Investors are finding that if they are good to the planet and to people, they also end up, on average, benefiting themselves. There is mounting evidence that funds which observe environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards in their strategies tend to outperform those that don’t by a significant margin. Socially responsible investing (SRI) is another approach to investing ethically. SRI is based largely on excluding certain companies from your portfolio, which you identify using a series of criteria related to, for example, environmental and social practices.
Socially responsible investing continues to grow and expand as investors have taken a shine to building profits with a purpose. There’s no longer a trade-off between profits and the planet! At Chorus Financial we make sure that we understand the individual needs of all our clients, not just in terms of their financial goals but also what is important to them in terms of investing. Being Independent means that we can chose the best possible investments for our clients and that includes investments with By Tracy Storer an ethical focus. FROM FRONT PAGE Somehow, escaping from the crushed vehicle, with only glass wounds to his left arm, a slight bang to the head and symptoms of shock, Ciaran soon realised the car was in a dangerous position, with a footpath and five houses lying below, endangering both life and property. The Irishman, who spent five years living in Altea, before relocating to Madrid, was able to call on his mother Carrol Curran, who still lives in the town, to help with getting medical attention and medication, then set about getting the vehicle removed. After an initial phone call to his Spanish insurance company MutuaMadrilena that night, Ciaran expected his car to have been removed the following morning. Extremely concerned that it was still in its precarious position the next day, he called the insurance company again. “ They said the Alteapolice had not called them about this, but they could arrange to remove it in 30 mins if i accepted to pay 60% of the operation
as the car was 3rd party, which is something i don’t get but agreed to as I was very concerned about the car hanging precariously over a whole row of houses.”, explained Ciaran taking up the story. “ But they called back five minutes later saying that the police had prohibited them from removing as it was in a place of transit ( un lugar de transito), and permission would have to be asked from town hall who were closed for the weekend and I should wait until Monday ”. However, after an inspection by fire officers on Sunday evening, who recovered some of his belongings including his passport, he was told an engineer would survey the situation the following morning and possibly evacuate the houses as a precaution. “Which i thought was a smart move as they have to pull a 1.3 tonne car up that cliff “, Ciaran continued, “ but on mondayafternoon my insurance company called to inform me I had to go down myself to personally request permission for the road to be cordoned off.”

POISONED
THE JOKE’S ON HER
A YORKSHIRE teenager is seriously ill in Torrevieja Hospital after being mysteriously poisoned during a night out with his family on the Orihuela Costa. 17-year-old Callum Forster from Leeds, and his stepfather Jamie Hadland, both fell ill after the family had spent an evening in Villamartin. Both were rushed to Torrevieja Hospital, with doctors saying that they had a pesticide in their blood stream. The pesticide is of a type used to kill ants or cockroaches, but there’s no indication as to where exactly they came into contact with it. Mr.Hadland was subsequently released from hospital, but Callum remains seriously ill after suffering from seizures, and being put onto a life support system. The mystery illness struck a fortnight ago on Friday July 20th, and Callum’s mother Helen and his 12-year-old brother, Brandon, have stayed in the area to support him. Miss Forster said they had been

to a bar after meeting friends in Villamartin, where the family have been staying with her mother Barbara, who lives in the area. “Within 10 minutes of getting back home, Jamie started feeling really strange. We got him to bed and he started flinging himself all over,” said Helen. Shortly afterwards, Callum fell ill. Helen added: “He started fitting and had ten seizures before the ambulance got there.” “The doctors and nurses in Torrevieja have been brilliant and he couldn’t be in a better hospital.” “However, he is very confused and is struggling to answer questions, we don’t know what impact the seizures have had on him yet.” “We’ve been told the recovery could take weeks or months.” A crowd-funding site has been launched to help raise 10 thousand pounds for the family, who have expenses to pay, since they are not back home in Yorkshire. There’s no news over what investigations authorities are carrying out to find the source of the pesticide.
Once rescuers reached her, they discovered it had all been a set-up, and having put their own lives at potential risk, they called in the San Javier local police. Besides possible legal action, she faces a bill to cover the costs of scrambling the emergency services to her non-existent rescue. Her address or nationality has not been revealed.
TAXI CHAOS
representatives said they were not satisfied with the government’s offer to transfer powers over licensing to regional governments, and said this would simply extend the problem to 17 regions, rather than fixing it. Meanwhile, at Alicante airport, president of the taxi drivers from Elche, José María Bretones, explained that “we are acting normally, explaining to customers what is happening, and helping them to take the buses to get to their destination.” He also revealed that passengers with walking difficulties, pregnant women and families with small children, were excluded from the strike action and would be able to make their onward taxi journey. The striking drivers were also on the lookout for unlicensed vehicles or ‘pirate drivers’ delivering passengers to and from the airport. “This morning we hunted down a driver without a license, a pirate, who are the ones who hurt the sector the most”, confirmed Bretones. In Benidorm, the drivers made the decision to begin the strike on Monday, after an intensely busy weekend servicing attendees of the Low
Taxi strike causes regional chaos
Striking taxi drivers brought major travel disruption to cities, towns and resorts across the Valencian region and beyond during the last few days. The strike, which began in Barcelona last week, had spread across the country by Saturday, affecting the journeys of both residents and tourists, who had to seek alternative means of transport. Travellers arriving by train at stations in Alicante and Valencia, hoping to hail a cab to continue their journey, were left with the prospect of using local buses or metro services. Tourists stepping off the

more than 300 planes arriving at Alicante-Elche airport last Monday, were met by lines of out of service taxis and drivers pointing them in the direction of airport buses. The ongoing action called by licensed taxi drivers, unhappy at “unfair” competition from ridehailing services like Uber or Cabify, led Spanish authorities to convene a series of meetings with representatives over the last few days in a bid to end the strike. Following a four hour meeting last Monday, the taxi

friday 3rd aUGUST 2018 music festival. Around 300 taxis paraded through the main streets of the resort last Monday in solidarity with the strike. In the Marina Alta towns of Denia and Calpe, passengers were able to make short journeys within the municipality, but no longer journeys to airports or cities were on offer. In the south of the region around eighty taxis paralysed traffic in Torrevieja centre, supported by drivers from Orihuela Costa. Regional President XimoPuig called for an end to the crisis, saying that it was affecting the image of the region to visitors, during the peak tourist season. He pointed out that companies such as Uber and Cabify, classified by a VTC certificate, do not present a major problem within the region as only one VTC licence is granted to every thirty official licences. In addition, Central Government Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Transport and Housing, Pedro Saura, asked the taxi drivers to end their strike following the last meeting. “We have made a very thoughtful proposal and we believe that there must be good quality services for citizens and that the regulatory framework has to protect everyone,” he said.
Bulls on the loose QUESTIONS have been asked about public safety at an upcoming bull running event after six of the giant beasts escaped from their enclosure and started wandering around the town. The incident happened in Vall d’Uxo in Northern Valencia where the annual event is due to take place this weekend. The bulls broke down the fence and left the enclosure, but fortunately only went as far as the local music conservatory where they sat in the shade of some trees. The local police loaded the beasts onto a special truck and transported them back to their vehicles. While nothing happened this time, the authorities admitted there would have been a danger to people if the bulls had not acted so placidly.
Suspect held after five months POLICE have arrested a man they suspect of being behind a serious incident in February when an Elche tobacconist and his customers were robbed at knifepoint. The masked man entered the shop brandishing the knife saying he would stab the shop owner and the two customers who were also present if they did not hand over their cash. They initially refused and the man then attacked them and stole their bags, causing injuries. Several police patrols attended the scene at the time but were unable to find the attacker, partly as he had been masked. They have continued with the investigation and sources say that a tipoff from an informant has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old this week.

national headlines in March, as the owners, who had been in the area from León, got involved in a blazing row on Facebook and on the phone with Torrevieja’s animal protection councillor,
Carmen Morate. Coco was found wandering the streets and was taken into an animal shelter, as attempts were made to find her owners, who had to return back to their home area. The person that the couple stayed with, found Coco in the care of the council, but getting her out proved to be problematic, due to no identification and “concerns” over her health. A recorded phone conversation featuring profanity from Morate was prompted by social media postings from the owners that disagreed with her that their dog had been “found in a state of poor health”, and therefore could not be returned to them. The couple also accused the councillor of being a “thief” and provided vets certificates dating to
November and December which showed that Coco was well, in addition to keeping up with the required vaccination schedule. Morate’s foul comments were splashed across national television and radio, prompting opposition calls for her to resign. She was forced to apologise some days later, and Coco was eventually reunited with her owners. But Morate has had the last laugh, as the couple have been stung with a heavy fine, which will be discounted by 40 per cent if they cough up by August 20th. Besides Coco not having a chip, the Guardia Civil reported that the loose dog caused problems with moving traffic on Torrevieja’s busy Avenida Cortes Valencianas, which they regarded as a “serious infraction”.

Mystery woman causes 17,000 delays
AN unidentified woman who evaded customs controls at Germany’s Munich airport caused huge flight delays over last weekend and into early this week. She somehow made it past security checks into a secure area of Terminal 2 and was believed to be carrying “unknown liquids”. Although these may have been nothing more than water, German authorities could not take any chances and effectively closed down operations. At least 200 flights were cancelled across Europe as two terminals were evacuated. Some 17,000 passengers missed their flights, many being stuck at other airports around the world; others flights

were severely delayed and by the start of this week thousands of people were still at the airport, many passengers sleeping for more than one night on the floor. Munich has flight connections with most major Spanish airports including Alicante. As things started to return to normal on Monday there was still a huge knockon effect causing delays, as well as the issue of passengers on cancelled flights trying to rebook. It is not known what happened to the woman who sparked the original alert, although security experts now believe she may never have been a real threat to travellers; why she took the actions she did is also unknown.
Icelandic Riddle
THE FAMILY of an Icelandic man have appealed for information about his whereabouts after he arrived on holiday in Alicante Province last month, but lost contact with them since July 12th. Jóhann Gíslason flew into AlicanteElche airport four days earlier, but it has been revealed that he did not book a return flight to Iceland. Having not heard from
Jóhann for four days, his relatives contacted the police on July 16th over his disappearance, as well as the Icelandic consul in Spain. Jóhann’s brother even flew to Spain to see if he could find him, but drew a blank in his search, with concern continuing to grow over his welfare. Contact the Icelandic Consulate: 966 800 387

Ray of hope
A TWO-METRE LONG giant devil ray caused excitement at Torrevieja’s La Mata beach last Saturday, as it swam just two metres from the shore. The rare species was spotted at around 11.30 am, and a team led by Torrevieja’s municipal biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, was scrambled to rescue it. A boat and a water scooter
Kayaking chaos
THE recent boom in the popularity of canoeing and kayaking excursions is causing a major headache for maritime emergency services on the Marina Alta and there are fears that a serious incident could occur. Many of the companies that have sprung up offering guided services have little or no experience of the

unique coastal conditions and basics such as tides, currents and water depth according to marine rescue professionals. Last weekend a group of kayakers had to be rescued from the Rotes de Denia and the week before a group of 13 had to be saved after becoming trapped
on the Isla de Portixol off Javea. Both cases were avoidable had the guides had better knowledge of the coastal conditions said a Red Cross spokesman. Even basis such as possible changes in the weather are not being taken into account, and several inexperienced paddlers have got into trouble as the wind has risen.

were used to capture the giant devil ray, which they put onto a stretcher, and then it was towed out into deeper waters. They then released the ray into the sea, some three kilometres from the coast. Juan Antonio Pujol said:“The ray had some kind of an issue that took it almost ashore, and it is possible that it might have been caught by a fishing boat, and then released. Once we took it out to sea, it immediately went back into the water and disappeared”. The giant devil ray is classified as an endangered species mainly because of it being caught accidentally by fishermen.
WHAT AM I BID?
ALICANTE-ELCHE airport is set to get another 18 food outlets under plans announced by airport operator, AENA. 18 concessions are set to be tendered, with the units set to open before next year’s summer season. Bids need to be in by October, with AENA saying that they are after attracting major companies to their facilities. An AENA statement said
by Neil Mortimer
that they wanted:- “A true gastronomic experience for airport users, combining the latest food trends mixed in with the demands of passengers.” Over five and a half thousand square metres of space has been allocated, which will increase the airport’s catering capacity, in terms of area, by around 18 percent.
Street name changes begins THE process to change the names of six streets in Alicante City with Franco regime connections has started. The first to be changed was Calle Felipe Berge which will now be called Calle Periodista Pirula Arderius. Ms Arderius was an editor who paved the way for female journalists in Spain and her daughter and granddaughter attended the ceremony. The other new streets coming into existence are Calles Pedro Mas Garcia, Marina Nomdedeu, Adrian Carrillo, Angelita Rodriguez Preciado and Periodista Adrian Lopez.
Night-time revellers cause complaint A group of residents who live on Javea’s Arenal Beach have joined forces to make an official complaint about the noise in the evenings and into the small hours in the popular area. The worst area for disruption is the end of the David Ferrer paseo where a number of clubs and bars are located, many of which have live music and attract a crowd of young revellers during the summer. They do not believe many of the establishments are complying with the current noise abatement laws. Many say they have had to spend money on equipment to block the noise such as fans and have been sleeping with earplugs in and all their windows closed.

PUSHERS PULLED Four men and a woman have been arrested for selling drugs out of three apartments in Almoradi after residents in one building complained to the Guardia Civil. All of those detained were in their twenties, with four of them being Spaniards, and the fifth being a Moroccan national. Three men were denied bail after a court appearance in Orihuela. The Guardia Civil said that their five-month operation has smashed drugs distribution around the town, and they started
by Alex Trelinski
their investigations after residents in an apartment block complained of large numbers of people appearing in the building. Equipment associated with drugs was found dumped on the staircase, with children witnessing a string of arguments and fights. A Guardia raid on the block uncovered two flats being used on separate floors, with plans for further expansion in the gang’s drugs distribution operation.
Seniors Ibiza party THE CEAM pension association has organised an Ibiza party for the older residents of Callosa d’en Sarria in the Marina Alta. The “Gran Festa Eivissenca” (Eivissenca means Ibizan in the Valenciano dialect) is to be held on 4 August at the CEAM centre. Starting at 8.30pm the dress code is

a very Ibizan all white and will include a special themed dinner followed by music and dancing. This part of the coast has many links to Ibiza, the closest Balearic Island and one that shares much in the way of culture, history and language.
Rock restrictions ACCESS to the Penyald’Ifac will be limited during the month of August in measures just announced by the Ministry of the Environment. Between 1st and 31st of August, only 150 people at a time will be allowed onto the summit path. Under the new system groups of 20 will be allowed onto the track every 15 minutes, which has been calculated to mean that the number will never exceed 150. THAT'S NO EXCUSE! IT WAS an unforgettable wedding day for a San Miguel de Salinas couple, as their registry office ceremony at the town hall was delayed because they got stuck in the building’s lift! Last Friday María José and her partner Antonio José were only just a minute away to saying “yes” to each other, but they and their witnesses did not bargain for the elevator breaking down, with María José having the added burden of being pregnant. The high noon ceremony deadline slipped past, with council staff providing bottles of water and fans to try to

cool everybody down, as workers raced to fix the problem. The stuck couple and their families took things in their stride, as they joked about what was going on, and they speculated that it was some kind of divine intervention to stop the wedding from going ahead. They even took selfies to show off their unexpected predicament. After an hour, everybody was freed and the ceremony took place, though the newly-wed couple opted to use the stairs to leave the building in case lightning struck twice.
Boardwalk anger
friday 3rd aUGUST 2018
AROUND two hundred people took to the streets of the La Mata area of Torrevieja on successive days to protest about the dangerous state of the wooden beach walkway. Protestors on Sunday and Monday decided to break the law by blocking the main access road into La Mata via the N-332 roundabout, with the demonstrations lasting around 15 minutes. The unauthorised action could lead to some heavy fines, assuming the Guardia Civil have identified some of the people involved. The local political group, La Plataforma
by Alex Trelinski
Independiente Matera (PIM), organised an official meeting in the main square on Sunday(pictured), where they collected a thousand signatures calling on the Environment Ministry to make improvements to the busy walkway. Demonstrators said that pedestrians tripping over rotting wood is a daily occurrence on the La Mata boardwalk, and a number of them, who are said to be summer residents, criticised the PIM group for not being forceful enough. Against the wishes of
the PIM, they then walked out of the square towards the N-332 roundabout and blocked the road, and duly repeated the same action the following day.
RETURN OFFENDER A MOROCCAN man who was deported from Spain at the end of June has been arrested in the Vega Baja region after a string of violent robberies. The Guardia Civil launched a special operation to catch the

man, who was detained in Cox and charged with committing three robberies with violence, and four counts of theft. An Orihuela judge remanded him into custody, with no explanation given as to how he broke his deportation order so easily, to make an immediate return to Spain.
“People are right to be angry, but everything has to be done legally, which, is why we did not support the unauthorised blockade”, said PIM spokesperson
Inma Azpiazu. Some of the protestors are also said to have removed rotting wood from the boardwalk, and thrown it onto the beach.

Speedboat ploughs into swimmers ONE swimmer lost a leg and another an arm as a speedboat ploughed into a group of about 20 swimmers in Mallorca last Friday. One man had his arm severed at the time of the accident, with divers later looking for the limb in the event of a possible reattachment. However they failed to find anything. Another swimmer had his leg so badly mangled by the boats propeller that it had to be amputated in hospital. The incident happened off Playa Es Trenc on the east of the island and witnesses said the pilot of the boat seemed unaware there was anyone in the water. Both victims are in Palma Hospital and said to be in a stable condition. Their names and nationalities have not yet been released, or that of the boat’s driver who is likely to face charges.
Killer call girl sentenced
THE Valencian Provincial Court has sentenced a prostitute to nine years in jail after finding her guilty of the murder of a client. The killing happened in 2005 when the pair met at a Valencian nightclub; they agreed on a fee of

€120 for sex and the woman accompanied the man back to his home in Alfafar. After they had sex the man refused to let her leave, the pair argued and the victim was stabbed
and bled to death. The 21-year-old prostitute, who is a Brazilian national, fled to Portugal. A warrant for her arrest remained on file and in 2016 her whereabouts in Portugal came to light; she was arrested then deported to stand trial in Spain.
Explaining the nineyear sentence, the judge agreed that there was an element of self-defence in the defendant’s actions. However, the stabbing was disproportionate to any danger he felt she was in, with her victim being described as very drunk.

“High Society” drug seized
Young mum jailed for kidnapping by Simon Russell
A quantity of a drug variously known as Tucibi, 2C-B and pink cocaine has been seized from a vehicle on its way to Ibiza from Denia. 56 grams of the substance was found in an SUV after the actions of the 31-year-old driver aroused the suspicions of the Javea
by Simon Russell
Guardia Civil officers who were patrolling the port. They also found 2.69 grams of cocaine, a small amount of marijuana, a jellybean they think has been injected with narcotics and €7,000 in cash.
2C-B is known as a high society drug due to its expensive cost and champagne pink colour. It is actually a methamphetamine which has a psychedelic effect on users. Consumption has been rising significantly recently, both in Spain and across Europe.
Murder plot wife detained A woman who asked her current partner to arrange the assassination of her exhusband has been arrested in Denia this week. The divorced couple had a child together and were engaged in a vicious custody battle, police sources say. This had led her to ask her current

partner, a Dutch national, to either killer her ex or arrange for a hit man to do the job. The man was concerned enough about this to contact his partner’s ex, also a Dutchman, and warn him his life was in danger.
Their telephone conversation was recorded and is seen as key evidence leading to this week’s arrest. It is not thought that the woman is a local resident and was either on holiday in Denia or visiting for some other reason; her ex-husband lives in Marbella.
A controversial court case has ended in a mother of two being sentenced to five years in jail for the abduction of her children. Juana Rivas met the father of her children, Italian national Francesco Arcuri, in Spain and they had a child together in 2006. They separated five years later amidst allegations of abuse by Mr Arcuri which he was officially charged with. However, the pair reunited in 2012 and moved to Italy where they had another child in 2014. In May 2016 Ms Rivas moved back to Granada with her children amidst further allegations of abuse. She had told her partner that the move was temporary but then refused to return to Italy and enrolled the children at a local school in the town of Maracena. Mr Arcuri started proceedings through the Italian courts, leading to the current case and charges of abduction against the defendant, who by this time was refusing
to allow her children to see their father. In a ruling this week the courts sided with the father and handed down the five-year prison sentence as well as a €30,000 fine. Ms Rivas has also been barred from seeing her children for six years. Her lawyer has said she will be appealing and called the decision “a failure of the Spanish and Italian justice systems” and that the children were taken from their father for their own protection. The judge said that there was no evidence of abuse other than the 2009 incident, although c h a r g e s filed in 2016 a g a i n s t Mr Arcuri are under investigation.

Infant earring debate Absent minded parents
A post by one of the Kardashian clan, of all things, has opened up a debate for the first time about the ethics of babies in Spain having their ears pierced. Here the tradition is so ingrained that noone even knows when the piercing of newborns started, but many think it goes back to a time when it was not so easy to distinguish baby boys and girls. That time has long past, but the custom prevails with the vast majority of newborn girls born to Spanish and Latin

American mums having earrings. However when Kylie Jenner posted Instagram images of her five-month-old daughter, complete with earrings, many in the US and Europe branded her as a cruel mother. In the UK “The Guardian” newspaper chastised her for “imposing her painful aesthetic preferences on a baby.” This surprised many Spanish who had never seen the practice as cruel and didn’t realise most people
in other countries waited until adolescence or later before having piercings. Some have come out on the side of the detractors while others point out that the baby cartilage is so soft at that age the procedure is painless. In many hospitals, the piercings are carried out by nurses and it is unlikely the practice will stop. However, the publicity generated combined with the young millennial following of the Kardashians may see some new young mums refraining from the traditional piercing.
A couple on a long drive across Europe filled up at a Spanish petrol station in the early hours then accidentally drove off without their 16-yearold daughter. The incident happened last weekend in Burgos in the Castile region when the Swiss plated car pulled in for fuel at about 4am.
by Matthew Richards
They pulled away not realising that their child had left the car to stretch her legs. When the young girl was spotted alone at the petrol station the police were informed and they took details of the events. A
patrol managed to locate her parent’s car, which had been driving for half an hour; they were unaware their daughter was missing until the police informed them. The Guardia Civil said the incident had been complicated by the fact that the child was upset and spoke no Spanish.
Hundreds of threatening texts leads to jail by Simon Russell
A court in Elda heard how a man sent 500 messages to an exgirlfriend in one day, including death threats. The victim is a minor, said to be under the age of 15, and the man had been carrying out community service as punishment for mistreating her. He had also been banned
from approaching or contacting her for two years. However just three days after the ruling he started sending messages such as “I’m going to kill you bitch, take away the restraining order.” This continued for three days until the girl reported the
incident. The defendant was sentenced to eleven months in jail for breaching a court order and a further restraining order issued. The court would have issued a more serious sentence but concluded that there was no evidence that the accused intended to carry out his threats.

Killer on the loose
A Spanish man who raped two women and killed one of them 17 years ago is currently on the run after escaping prison. Guillermo Fernandez Bueno was sentenced to 36 years in jail back in 2002 for the murder and rape of Ana Aguirrezabal and the rape of another woman in Vitoria. The court heard how Ana had died of suffocation but Bueno had also cut her throat. He was serving out his sentence in the Dueso penitentiary in Cantabria and had begun to enjoy privileges such as limited day leave from jail. However earlier this month he did not return when he should have and the police now believe he is on the run. They have posted details on social media and asked the public to help if they spot him and call 091, although he should not be approached.

Migrant boats rescued
FOUR small vessels containing migrants making the Mediterranean crossing to Spain were intercepted off the local coastline on one day last week. A patera with eight people on board was spotted about fifty nautical miles off the coast and towed into Javea by a fishing boat. Three other boats were helped off Benidorm, Villajoyosa and Alicante carrying a total of about 30 people. The Red Cross sent teams to

To highlight the dangers of the crossing, a corpse was found floating off the coast of Villajoyosa last Friday. The badly decomposed body of a man, probably in his 20’s, had been in the water for quite a while and was unrelated to the latest interceptions.
Toxins close beach A stretch of beach at Benicarlo in Castellon province has been closed due to the detection of a high level of microbiological contamination. Recent heavy rains in the area are believed to have washed the waste from the site of some nearby toilets and it is not thought that any illegal dumping of toxic waste

is to blame. The site is being retested this week and hopefully will be given the all clear and allowed to re-open said, Mayor Xaro Miralles. The affected beach, Playa Gurugu, has had problems with sewage overspill in the past, usually caused by heavy rain.
A 59-year-old man has died in a town in theValencian province after falling into vat used to boil solvents at his workplace. The accident happened last week at the Fuento del Jarro industrial estate in Paterna. Colleagues called the emergency services which were able to be very quick on the scene due to the proximity of the ambulance and fire station. A fire crew were then able to extract the man with a harness and he was given CPR by the ambulance staff but was declared dead at the scene. An enquiry is expected as to how the accident happened.
Dry time ahead for hospital
WHEN the cafeteria at Denia’s La Pedrera Hospital closes next month there are no plans for it to re-open in the near future. The closure comes about as a result of the new public procurement law and has to be retendered to allow it to operate again. However this could take some time, said a spokesperson for the hospital. La Pedrera cares for chronic and long stay patients in and around the Marina Alta.

Houseful of felines Airport worker behind theft
FOLLOWING complaints by neighbours, police removed over 100 cats from a residential home in Malaga last week. The complaints had been prompted by the smells coming from the property as well as the noise of cats howling during the night. Agents from Grupona, the animal protection arm of the local police, entered the property to find dozens of cats crammed into a courtyard and another small room. The 37-year-old man who lived there admitted he didn’t know how many cats he had, probably around 40; police said the actual figure was 101. The householder said many of them were the descendants of

two cats he had started with a few years before, saying he didn’t have the heart to get rid of the kittens that followed and admitted things had gotten out of hand. The cats had no documentation or chips and many were in a poor state of
health. Many of the creatures will have to be euthanized although it is hoped that some of the healthier cats can be rehoused. The case has been reported to social services as it is thought that the man has psychological problems. His property had no running water and was piled with rubbish as well as cat waste.
Swamped with tourists
THE island of Tabarca off the Alicante coast has the highest rate of tourists to residents, with nearly 4,000 visitors for every person that lives there. While there is a permanent population of just 60, an estimated 230,000 people set foot on the twenty kilometre long islet between June 2017 and June 2018. This influx also prompted the highest number of visitor related complaints
per square metre in Spain, with 2,891 lodged, mainly expressing concerns about the environmental impact of the mass tourism. Tabarca was made a nature reserve in 1986, something that should grant it special protection status. There are no signs that things are slowing down
this summer, with the Alicante Compromis party denouncing what it calls the dangers of summer over exploitation.
TWO people have been arrested in connection with the theft of four tablet-style devices used to help monitor border controls at Alicante airport. El Altet has 20 of the machines but a recent inventory found that four were missing. A check back through CCTV footage
by Simon Russell
showed that an airport worker, who was employed by an external company to maintain air conditioning units, had taken the devices, worth about €2,000 each. There was no trace of the tablets at the suspect’s
property and a search was launched on the internet and other places they were likely to be sold. The stolen items were eventually tracked down to an electronics shop in Alicante. The two arrested are believed to be the thief and his female partner who was behind the sale of the stolen goods.

Pyrotechnics light up the Altea skies
The skies above the Bay of Altea will explode in a kaleidoscope of colour and light next weekend at the spectacular Castell de L’Olla firework display. Visible for miles around, the event, which began as a midsummer celebration
by Andy Mansell
in 1986, is considered to be amongst the top five pyrotechnic displays in the whole of Spain. More than 50,000 people are expected to descend
onto the sleepy 1.4km stretch of shingle beach, situated just to the north of Altea on Saturday, August 12th to witness the annual spectacle. Over the years the event has grown to become a free festival attracting
visitors from far and wide, who soak up the early evening atmosphere provided by live bands and dancers as the excitement builds up to the midnight spectacular.

Boiling bus stops
Castell de L’Olla firework display by Andy Mansell
Continued from front page...
Around 2000 kilos of gunpowder is used during the thirty to forty minute display, choreographed by prize winner Ricardo Caballer for the fourth consecutive year. The event is unique in the world of pyrotechnics as the fireworks are launched from a series of pontoons moored a few hundred metres offshore allowing spectators maximum visible impact whilst onshore, the whole
display is accompanied by a live orchestra. Bars, restaurants, chiringuitos and cantinas lining the beachfront are booked out months in advance, so the majority of visitors bring their own picnic and beach furniture. With the huge influx of spectators arriving in town, understandably roads around Altea and its surroundings are gridlocked throughout the whole day as people arrive to claim a favourable viewpoint. Additionally, parking
spaces are in short supply, so organisers, the Brotherhood of the Castell de L’Olla, always recommend that visitors use public transport wherever possible. The number 10 bus service from Benidorm to Altea leaves passengers with a fifteen-minute walk to L’Olla after disembarking, whilst extra TRAM services are laid on for the day, enabling users to walk down from the L’Olla station. Festivities begin at 20.00h, although most spectators have been on the
beach, eating, drinking and soaking up the atmosphere for hours by then. A flotilla of boats, yachts and sailing craft of all shapes and sizes arrives offshore, full of revellers anticipating the gunshot which signals the beginning of the spectacle at 23.55h. The pyrotechnics are truly awe-inspiring, made even more so, by the reflections created by the ocean, giving an almost mirror image effect bringing gasps of delight to the spectators. When the display ends,
the party begins, as most visitors, stay on to enjoy the balmy night air and the unique occasion, often staying well into the small hours of Sunday. The display is so huge and spectacular, it is worth remembering that spectators do not have to be directly on the beach of L’Olla to enjoy it, in fact, all of the beaches and coves along the coast of the bay from Playa Albir to Mascarat will be packed with throngs of people enjoying the spectacle from a distance.
R E S I D E N T S associations and groups representing tourists in Denia have called for shelters to be erected at all the town’s bus stops. Many of the stops on the outskirts of the town have no cover at all, especially around the Les Marines and Nova Denia lines. People have to stand in almost unbearable heat in the middle of the day, many of them elderly or people with small children, say the groups. There is also no shelter from the cold and rain in the winter months. An example given was the Denia to Molinell route which has 16 stops and only one bus shelter. World class local wine A wine produced in the Marina Alta has won prestigious international recognition at an event in London. The International Wine Challenge has been dubbed the “Oscars of the wine world” and the Bahia de Denia from Bodegas Xalo won a special commendation from judges. The 2017 muscatel is a white wine, relatively low in alcohol at 11.5%. The muscatel grape is probably the best known in this part of Spain, especially in the vineyards of the Jalon Valley and Benitatxell.

Albir fiesta weekend Residents of Alfas del Pi will head to the beach later this month for the annual Albir Summer Festival. Originally introduced as a warmer weather equivalent to the November Fiestas Patronales, which are often accompanied by stormy, cold weather, the August festival has grown to become a popular event on the towns calendar. This years fiestas take place from Friday August 18th to Sunday August 20th, with lots of fun activities
by Andy Mansell
promised for both young and old. The fiesta playground is the shady Eucalyptus park, one road back from the beach behind the Hotel Kaktus. For the duration of the fiestas the park is completely taken over by the dozens of ‘penyas’ or social clubs who are allocated a few square feet each within the park to make their own.
A total of around 41 penyas with approximately 750 associated members, including 120 minors are expected to take part in this years event. Launching the programme, Alfas del Pi councillor, Marisa Cortes, said “These activities are open to participation from all over the world, not just the supporters, so we invite residents and visitors from l’Alfàs and the region to come and experience them in the first person,”
Friday’s inauguration party includes a performance by folk group The Boys of the City and continues with music from Ivan Deejay. On Saturday the activities take place in different locations of the beach resort, in order to “move the festive atmosphere throughout l’Albir,” said the councillor. A p e t a n q u e championship will be held at the Retirement and Pensioners Club of l’Albir, aquatic attractions set up for
the little ones on ÓscarEsplá Avenue, a Flower Power party will take place at the Eucalyptus Park, and a scary mascletá nocturnal organised by the Ricasa pyrotechnics will bring a touch of drama to the Albir market car park continuing with live music from the Gamma Live orchestra and, finally, a foam party with DJ Jes Set takes place back in the Eucalyptus park. On the Sunday in addition to water attractions for children, a popular

aperitif will be served in the park, there will be evening or entertainment by the Benidorm Tropical Charanga. The fiestas will conclude with mass at the new Albir church at 8pm on Sunday evening. As in previous years, a free bus service is available to the public from 12:30 at night until 4:30 in the morning, with stops at the Casa de Cultura in Alfas centreand the Eucalyptus Park in Albir.

A four-man team carried out pruning and preservation work on the giant araucaria tree on the outskirts of Altea. The 30-metre tall tree had a number of dead branches which needed removing for safety reasons and for the health of the plant. The Department of Environment, which organised the work, said that the araucaria is an important landmark and is also protected under environmental laws. The Araucaria genus is an evergreen conifer, native to South America, especially Chile. Commonly known as monkey puzzles in the UK and US they can grow up to 80 metres high and can live for over a hundred years.

Biker death
A 46-year-old motorcyclist died on the outskirts of Pego last Friday after his vehicle left the road. The incident happened on the CV-678, the road that connects Pego and Oliva. Witnesses said that the bike swerved off to the left at a bend in the road and crashed into a wall, probably killing the man on impact. The victim has not been named at this stage.
Kiosk up for offer
THE well-positioned bar and café site in Alcoy’s La Glorieta Park is set to come up for public tender as the municipally owned kiosk is now ready to be opened after the work on the old birdhouse building has been completed. The minimum fee for prospective tenders starts at €2,268 per annum but
the winning bid is expected to be much higher. The amount offered will be the prime criteria in deciding the tenderer although other factors will be taken into account ranging from the quality of the furniture used to long-term economic viability. A large terraced area for seating is included in the rental of the bar.

Council fined in harassment case CALPE Town Hall and one of its employees have been fined €10,000 over a worker harassment case. The court in Benidorm heard how the complainant worked at the Casa de la Cultura and a long-running feud developed between them and a co-worker, a more senior staff member. This person made continuous verbal attacks, both in private and in front of colleagues. They also forced them to do tasks that were not part of their job description such as cleaning duties, although their official job role was in public relations. The court found in favour of the complainant saying that the accused worker and town council “violated the physical and moral integrity of the employee” and handed down the fine to be paid jointly.
Monitoring the marina AFTER a series of thefts and suspected arson attacks boat owners who have their vessels in Javea’s port have asked that security is stepped up. The Association of Public Moorings has made the request to the Port Authority, saying that four CCTV cameras and improved lighting would make the area much safer with a minimum outlay and no requirement to hire security staff.
There have been a number of thefts recently including items such as naval instruments and other boating gear. There was also a suspected arson attack on a yacht earlier this month and more recently some fishing nets were set on fire. The Mooring Association said the proposed measures would bring the security at Javea port in line with that at Denia’s marina.
Red tape detention
A Lithuanian man has been arrested in Denia after applying for a NIE card in Denia’s DNI offices. Apparently the process had triggered alerts as there was an international arrest warrant out against him for offences in his home country dating back

Chronic Health Conditions in School Children • Emergency situations: what to do and what not to do. • Special requirements (dietary needs). • How often your child will be absent form school. All in all, if the child’s condition can be correctly managed with minimal involvement from the school, this will be easier for you and the school. HATE CRIME QUIZ
BENIDORM police are investigating to see whether a British stag-do party committed a hate crime by paying a vulnerable homeless man 100 euros to have the groom’s name tattooed on his forehead. Meanwhile, the local British community is raising money to help the Polish man have the tattoo removed, and to get him medical help. 34-year-old Tomek was allegedly paid to have “Jamie Blake, North Shields N28” inked permanently on his face at a parlour. In turn, Mr.Blake, who has lived in the area for three months, says that he wasn’t at the parlour, after being thrown out of a bar for being drunk. He added that Tomek was not homeless, but lived with a friend of his and worked on the strip. Blake stated that he definitely knew that Tomek had not been paid, whilst the first he knew of the incident was when pictures were posted on social media the
by Simon Russell
following morning. Karen Maling Cowles, president of the Benidorm British Business Association, has slammed the incident and is trying to raise three thousand euros to get the tattoo removed as part of help she has offered Tomek. Karen, who is married to a tattoo artist, says Tomek told her he was paid by the stag do group. She added: “The community is disgusted about it. It’s awful, taking a vulnerable person’s situation and thinking throwing a bit of money gives you a quick bit of fun.” She said Tomek, who was jaundiced and had the shakes when she met him, told her he was an alcoholic who had walked 1,700 miles to Benidorm after breaking up with his girlfriend. Tomek is then said to have been attacked and robbed after he was allegedly paid by the British men. Juan Carlos Fulgencio, a
central government delegate for the Valencia region said a formal complaint had been made to police and an investigation was underway. He said: “It appears that this citizen, was in a bad way and that because he was incapable of making a coherent decision about tattooing the name of another person on his forehead, he agreed to do it.”

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Reg Akehurst And we’re off….. On Monday we played the ever popular Texas scramble.First over the jumps were Bryan Neal, Donna Campbell, Andy McDonald and Rachael Leckey with a nett score of 60.6. So why the horse racing theme this week? I mentioned recently one of our members,RegAkehurst, because he was celebrating his 89th birthday. Reg was born in Folkstone in 1929. With his first winner as a jump jockey in 1953, on Grand Refrain, Reg went on to ride 99 winners over the next twelve years. As he recently told me ‘I was bit of a late starter’. It was as a trainer that Reg really found fame.
Having gained his training licence in 1962, he ‘saw home’ the winners of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy twice and the Welsh Grand National. During his career he trained over 1,000 winners, many of which were ‘group races’. When he announced his retirement from racing, to come and join us on the golf course, the Independent newspaper described him as ‘One of the most feared trainers in handicaps’. It’s a great honour to be able to share a beer with Reg and listen to some of the remarkable stories he has to tell. With all the runners and riders in place we were ready for Wednesday’s Stableford competition. Andy McDonald won by
three lengths with a score of 41 points. Second, with 38 points, was Nigel Price. Pipped at the post, Lindsay Forbes took third with 35 and Rachael Leckey finished strongly to take the fourth spot with 33 points. There were four ‘2’s today with Andy McDonald’s eagle 2 on the 9th being the most memorable. Friday and into the final furlong for the last team game of the week ‘Change Partners’. By a short neck with 85 points were Dave Pulling, Tom Hardie, Rod Doel and Nigel Price. We had a steward’s enquiry today with marshals taking ‘photos of players driving buggies into restricted areas, so if you want a picture of the winners, see one of them!
Mondays roll up stableford of the yellow blocks was won by Barry Roehrig with 38 points and a cut. Nearest the pins were Nick Shaw(3),John Gould(6), Mike Stott (13) and Barry Roehrig (16). On Wednesday we played a stableford competition, results was as follows; 4th, Brian Bevan(33), 3rd, Mick Elliot(34), 2nd,Mike Stott (35) and 1st,Shaun Locke (37). Nearest the pins were Stuart Tosh (6)&Shaun Locke (16). Saturday was one of the hottest days of the year we
played La Finca to its full extent a stableford off the white blocks, with the course still in good condition. We had one guest today Gary Cornforth from our shirt sponsors Welcome Estates. Results was as follows; 4th, Barry Roehrig (33), 3rd,Eric Owens(34), 2nd, Alex Duchart (34) and 1st, Ole Dibbernwith the best count back score of 34 points. Nearest the pins were Steve Ansell(3), No one(6) Brian Bevan (13) and,no one(16). No 2s today as some of the par 3s being over 200yds making it difficult even to hit the greens.
Best dressed golfer today was Will Hammond. Back to The Corner Flag Bar afterwards for food and presentation thanks to Steve and his staff. La Finca Golf Society meets every Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays at La Finca with first tee time around 09-00 am. Saturday is main competition day with various competitions which are Spanish Federated, to be eligible to play you need a handicap of 16 or less. If you are interested or require more information give Barry a ring on 666694467 or 966731033.
TPGS in Vistabella Today’s event saw TPGS head to Vistabella, a venue appreciated by most players since it became a full 18 hole course this year. Our game this week was supported by one of our main sponsors Warren Harris, proprietor of Mosquito Blinds R Us who donated 2 additional prizes for which we are very grateful. As usual everybody entered the 2’s pot and out of 34 players only 1 player claimed the ‘pot’... step forward Billy Wilson scooping all 68 euros. Alas one of our guests appeared not to get on too well with the course and breaking the Society’s lowest score record and making Gordy’s 12pts last week look good was Tony Hessey with a challenged 6pts...back to the range for You!!! Nearest the pins saw Billy Wil-
son on the podium again...twice.... alongside Andy Jones, Steve Barry and Rob McDowell each winning vouchers donated by our hosts at The Ale House...cheers! The 2 additional prizes donated by Mosquito Blinds R Us for Longest Drive and nearest the pin in 3 on hole 14 were both won by Graeme Clarke pocketing 50€ in total...well done Graeme. Best lady on the day saw Linda Ottway triumph scoring an impressive 35pts winning a sleeve of balls which her other half can lose at the next event!! Our guest category had 9 players with Thomas Hessey 3rd with 33 pts, Peter Dobson 2nd with 35 pts both beaten by Andy Jones on 37 pts. Moving onto our Member competitions: Silver Division we had the returning Nick Peach
scoring 36pts for 3rd place behind 2nd placed Ian Woodhall with 37 pts but both were blown away by the affable but still hearable Barry Mitchell with a monster 43pts which the handicap committee will be scrutinizing closely and adjusting accordingly !!! In Gold Division consistent Graeme Clarke scored 36pts for 3rd, completing a great day for himself in 2nd was Billy Wilson with 38pts and heading up the day was Rob McDowell with a brilliant 40pts...congratulations to all our winners and thanks to everybody for taking part. Next week we are at our nearest course Villamartin with only 3 places left so if you haven’t already got your name down log onto our website and register asap to avoid disappointment at www. theplazagolfsociety.com.

2000€ Raised for Rangers Hero Ricksen
Customers of one of Benidorm’s busiest bars turned out in force to celebrate the birthday of one of their heroes last weekend. Owners of the Ibrox bar in the Rincon de Loix area of the resort, Wilma and John Wallace, had organised a meet and greet with Glasgow Rangers legend Fernando Ricksen, to celebrate his forty-second birthday. Dutchman Ricksen made 182 appearances for the club during a six-year spell, which ended in 2006 and earned twelve caps for Holland throughout his career. Tragedy struck the popular sportsmen after he gave up playing when he revealed in October 2013 that he had been diagnosed
with Motor Neurone disease. Since then, although his condition has worsened considerably, leaving him struggling to walk, talk and swallow, he has continued to attend fundraising events for his charity The Ricksen Foundation. Unfortunately, Ricksen was not well enough to attend the Ibrox fundraiser last Saturday, disappointing the avid Rangers fans who had bought the 5€ tickets to meet him. However, his wife Veronika, 32 and daughter Isabella were in attendance on his behalf, much to the delight of the customers, the majority of whom spurned the offer of a refund on their tickets and donated further to
the grand total. A post on the bars facebook wall confirmed the success of the event, “What a fantastic night we had for Fernando Ricksen’s birthday. Unfortunately
Fernando was unable to attend, however, Veronika and Isabella were there on his behalf. Thank you to all who attended and showed their support - raising €2000 for the Ricksen Foundation.”
Mobile fire sparks evacuation
A Ryanair flight sitting on the runway at Barcelona airport had to be evacuated after a passenger’s mobile phone caught on fire. The plane was due to leave for Ibiza when smoke appeared, causing a degree of panic
by Matthew Richards
among passengers. The emergency evacuation procedure was immediately started and everyone deplaned via the emergency slide. No-one was hurt although
some passengers suffered friction burns on exposed arms and legs when using the slide. One witness said there was a “stampede” to get on the slide and the crews actions had not helped to calm people. All passengers suffered major
delays as their luggage had been loaded on the aircraft and had to be transferred to a new one. A statement issued by Ryanair on Twitter said that the fire was due to a lithium battery catching fire in a traveller’s phone.
Painful wait for ambulance A youth who had a nasty skateboarding accident on Elche’s Arenales del Sol at the weekend had to wait about 40 minutes for an emergency ambulance to arrive. The 19-year-old fell off almost next to the emergency medical office – however it is not in operation at weekends. A nurse who was passing by and medically
by Simon Russell
trained lifeguards attended the teenager, staunching his blood loss which was described as quite severe. The Basic Life Support Ambulance arrived 40 minutes after first being called and treated the man before transferring him to hospital.
On trial for raping granddaughter The trial has started of a man from San Vicente del Raspeig accused of seriously sexually abusing his 12 year old granddaughter. According to prosecutors, the first incident occurred when three generations of the family were on holiday in a large country house. The accused had been left alone with the child and forced her into having full and unprotected sex. The prosecution team said a forensic examination of the girl concurred with
by Simon Russell
her version of events. There were also WhatsApp messages, unexplained gifts and the child’s statements that all supported evidence of further abuse. The girl was actually the daughter of the accused’s wife and another man, however the court heard that the girl had been legally adopted by the accused although he had always been considered as her grandfather. The hearing in Alicante’s Third Court continues this week.

WILLOWS FAREWELL TABLES TURNED A group of yobs accused of pelting a disabled woman with eggs and flour before taking a sick celebratory selfie are now under police protection after receiving threats. High Court judge, Amanda Yip, this week parent, Violet cleared Ellis of any negligence - ruling parents should not be expected to keep their children ‘cooped up’ indoors all day. Her son Caine, 18, could now receive multimillion damages from the insurers after he suffered a serious head injury in the accident in Birmingham a decade ago. The UK government’s official Chequers plan for the post-Brexit economy would leave a major dent in Britain’s national income equivalent to about £500 a year per person, a leading think tank has warned. Analysing plans for post-Brexit arrangements, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) calculated UK gross domestic product would be 2.5% smaller over the next decade than if the UK chose a “soft Brexit” similar to Norway’s relationship with the EU. NIESR economists added that the so-called
Chequers plan, backed by Theresa May, is also likely to push up inflation by around 1.4%, due to a further fall in the pound. They warned that the impact could be considerably larger than this because the estimates did not include a Brexit-related fall in UK productivity levels something most economists have concluded is likely. However, the NIESR said that while the white paper plan would equate to a comparative loss of around £500 per person. The impact of a hard Brexit, where there is no deal and the UK crashes out next March, would
be considerably larger potentially around £800 per person. Meanwhile, local authorities across the UK have expressed serious concerns about the delivery of public services in dozens of Brexit impact studies obtained by Sky News. Nearly 30 councils have responded to a freedom of information request for their Brexit plans, with some expressing mounting incredulity and exasperation at having to plan to deliver local public services against a backdrop of highly uncertain Brexit negotiations with Europe and within government.

17 local companies are involved in the two-phase 32 million euro project which will see the construction of a building covering 53 thousand square metres. Phase one will see a fish warehouse set up by next summer, and then a
new area for perishable and frozen goods to be completed by 2021. Mercadona employs 640 people at their San Isidro site, and claims that extra automation will make their employees lives easier, and will further “guarantee the freshness of their products for customers”.
Slow down in recovery
ALTHOUGH still going in the right direction, the Spanish economy is showing signs of slowing down. The latest financial data for the quarter from April to June showed growth of 0.6%, a tenth of a percent less than the previous three quarters which had seen growth of 0.7%.
by Simon Russell
The figures, released by the National Institute of Statistics, are also slightly less than Bank of Spain forecasts. Employment increased by 0.8% in the same period, better than the previous quarter, although this was
expected due to the usual spike in seasonal employment. Household consumption fell very slightly but investment improved while exports decreased by 1% and imports also fell slightly. Employee wages rose by 0.4% on average, partly as a result of the rise in employment.

Being Proactive Can Help Your Pet Live Longer
PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES
MABEL This gorgeous kitten is now 10 weeks old having been found on 9th May at 4 weeks old under a car. She is playful and affectionate and ready for her new family.
(BPT) - Your pets are an integral part of the family, so it’s important to practice preventative care to support their well-being and help them live long, healthy lives. But just like people, pets can be affected by chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and allergies. That’s why, as a pet parent, staying informed and being proactive can help to avoid or at least prolong the onset of chronic conditions. Pet health trends change over time. Cats and dogs are more prone to certain conditions now than they have been in the past. For example, over the past 10 years there’s been a 30 percent increase in environmental allergy cases in dogs and an 11 percent increase in cats, according to the Banfield 2018 State of Pet Health Report. Allergens can vary by region and climate, but many common triggers can be found in the home, notes the study.

Just in time ARC agreed to take this very pregnant little girl from Valencia Perrera and, soon after her arrival, she produced 4 boys and a little girl. No adoption fee but a donation is much appreciated. Food and donations also urgently needed and can be left at ARC’s charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1, Jalon between 10 am & 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday. Additionally, pets today are also more prone to being overweight, and obesity cases are rising. One in three pets are overweight, according to Banfield, and the numbers are growing. While you can be proactive in helping pets exercise and eat a nutritionally-balanced diet, there are many other health conditions you have no control over. Pets can suffer from chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and thyroid disease. The first step to keep pets healthy is to invest in preventative care. One of the most important things you can do to ensure the ongoing health of any animal is to bring them in for annual checkups whether they are experiencing health issues or not. This allows veterinarians to screen for a variety of health issues and provide insight on any concerns. This is also an opportunity for you to ask important questions and get expert insight. If you discover that your pet has a chronic condition that needs to be treated, don’t panic. Modern medicine and treatment plans help pets live a long, high-quality life even with conditions like allergies or diabetes. You may have to make lifestyle adjustments such as changing food or activity routines, but it’s usually manageable and you’ll likely notice an improvement to your pet’s health and demeanor quickly.
The program offers savings on commonly prescribed medications such as insulin and antibiotics, as well as glaucoma and anti-inflammatory drugs. A list of the medications with which you can use the Inside Rx Pets card, as well as information to compare the pricing in pharmacies in your area and other use terms, can be found at InsideRx. com/pets.

Pollution protection: 5 easy tips
for combating the environment’s effects on skin UV rays can easily wreak havoc on your skin, so it’s essential to develop a proper skincare routine to combat these effects. In a given year, Americans are subject to some 83 million tons of pollution particles emitted into the air. Many Americans encounter those particles on their daily commutes, and because they can be 20 times smaller than your pores, they can infiltrate deep levels of your epidermis, leading to inflammation, dehydration and/or loss of

DS 7 Crossback
IT was easy to be sceptical when Citroen’s upmarket DS brand was launched as a standalone entity in 2014. Who would buy a posh Citroen over the likes of Audi, BMW and MercedesBenz, especially when its line-up included the lacklustre DS4 and peculiar DS5? DS has been desperate for a new model - one that’s never been sold with a Citroen badge. Enter the DS7 Crossback. A premium SUV that shares a platform with the Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall Grandland X, the DS7 is intended to rival the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Volvo’s brilliant new XC40.
So how does the DS7 stand out? For a start, it looks like nothing we’ve seen before from DS. There’s more than a hint of Audi Q3 about its appearance, but details like ‘hypnotic’ 3D rear lights and divisive Byzantin Gold of our test car means it attracts a lot of attention on the road. It’s big, too - at more than 4.5 metres long, nearly 1.9 metres wide and over 1.6 metres high, it’s bulkier than most rivals. The DS7’s large dimensions provide a spacious interior, with a huge 555-litre
Scooter safety
AS two wheeled electric scooters become more popular across Spain, regions and municipalities are trying hard to issue legislation about safe use of the vehicles. Denia town hall has now said that anyone using one of the machines within the city limits will need to be wearing a helmet. Councillor Javier Scotto said there will also be clarification given soon on where the vehicles can be driven, for the safety of pedestrians as well as scooter users. Denia has a large amount of scooters at this time of year due to firms that rent them out, mainly to tourists.
boot and enough space to carry both front and rear passengers in comfort. Like the exterior, the DS7’s interior feels very different from any other car on the market, even if PeugeotCitroen acificionadoes might spot a few obvious PSA Group features. To drive, the DS7 is clearly designed with comfort in mind rather than sportiness. There’s excellent visibility and it’s perfectly civilised to drive as long as you leave it in Normal mode. While the engines we’ve
tried have all been fine, the diesels are noisier than you may expect from a car that’s attempting to tempt BMW and Mercedes-Benz buyers in the premium sector. The DS7 could easily turn heads as a motor show concept car, so it does an excellent job of standing out in a world of very good if slightly bland premium vehicles. The interior is unusual - if not quite up the high levels of perceived quality we’d expect from a car in the class. Unfortunately for DS, while the 7 Crossback has more redeeming features than the DS4 and DS5, we suspect it’s going to remain quite a niche model.

The excitement is building up for the new A.F.F.L. with the 1st round of Premier League fixtures just one week away. All our Fantasy Managers on the Costa Blanca & in England will be desperate to start building their new Fantasy Football teams ahead of the 2018-19 campaign. The 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League commences on the weekend 10th,11th & 12th of August and all you have to do to take part in this very special Competition is to select a team in a 4-3-3 formation from our Players List who score points based on their performances in the Premier League & F.A.Cup throughout the 2018-19 Season. You have up till 4 pm on Saturday 11th of August to get your teams in when I will be at the Local in Albir for any last minute entries. Obviously, we want your selections in A.S.A.P. to help with the administration and it’s so important that you put the right code for the Players you have selected. You can only spend a
Minimum of 45 million and not exceed a total of 50 million in your selections. If you want the likes of Spurs Harry Kane, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Liverpool’s Mo Salah & Manchester United’s David De Gea in your starting XI’s you will have to make sacrifices across the rest of your team and that’s when your knowledge on Players comes in handy. The trick is to find one hidden gem who is lower down in the pecking order who will get you those extra points as the Season Unfolds. All entry forms & Players Lists are available at the following outlets. In Moraira, Spencers Bar & Bariloche, in Albir The Local, Bar Tapas, Hepburns , Caspers, Quick Save Supermarket, Colours Bar, The Orange Tree & the Arlequin Cafe Bar, in Benidorm The Drop Inn, Old Vic, Winning Post, Union Jack and the Juke Box. in Alfaz the Bar Code, Robins Nest Camping Almafra & The Moli. If you have any problems getting to one of our pick up points you
can always phone me on 696075632 and I will make every effort to make sure you get them. Former world number one Andy Murray took another big step in his comeback from hip surgery by beating fellow Briton Kyle Edmund in the second round of the Washington Open. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray

beat British number one Edmund 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 6-4 late on Wednesday, and was scheduled to play Romania’s Marius Copil in the third round in the early hours of this morning.
“It was much better, just in terms of the way I actually played the match,” said the Scot, 31. “Regardless of the result, we wanted to at least be dictating more points, trying to use my forehand, be closer to the baseline.”
“I think I did that, especially in some of the important moments in the third set. I was being more offensive.” The Washington event is part of the build-up to the final grand slam of the season, the US Open, which starts in New York
It could still be coming home! The Football Association is considering putting England forward as a potential host for the 2030 World Cup. The last major tournament played in England was the 1996 European Championship, 30 years after the country

hosted its only World Cup. FA chairman Greg Clarke says the governing body’s board has agreed to start work to see if a bid is feasible. “This work will take place during the new season and no decision
will be made until 2019,” added Clarke. Wembley is already hosting seven games during Euro 2020, and the FA has bid to host the European Women’s Championship in 2021. England roundly failed with a bid to host the 2018 World Cup,
and they felt aggrieved by that bidding process. It’s thought the FA has been encouraged over 2030 by the greater transparency around the recent vote for the 2026 World Cup, which was won by a joint United States, Canada and Mexico bid.
The toast of Wales GERAINT THOMAS has hit national hero status back in Wales, after winning the Tour de France last weekend, but his modest and amiable personality has won him many admirers. It should not be forgotten that Team Sky colleague and defending champion, Chris Froome, finished third, and the way that they handled their sporting rivalry with Froome backing Thomas once he grabbed the yellow jersey, was a great example of sportsmanship that should be admired. Before Le Tour, there were rumours that Thomas might be looking for a move from Team Sky, with his contract finishing at the end of the year. Not surprisingly team boss, Sir Dave Brailsford has said that Thomas should stay, but he can now enjoy a bidding war for his services.

The 31-year-old from Cardiff is clearly enjoying revelling in success. “It’s like riding the crest of a wave because all this is not normal, all the interviews and staying in nice hotels,” he told the BBC.. “It’s been insane. I’m a big Arsenal fan and I spoke to Arsene Wenger when I was on the phone at the airport. I got video messages off the likes of Lee Dixon, Thierry Henry and comedian Rob Brydon.” The bad news for cycle fans over here is that Thomas is almost certainly going to give La Vuelta a miss later this month, despite entering for it. “I was down to do La Vuelta, which is another three week race, but I don’t think that’s going to happen now.”

Your Weekend Starts Here! A SPORTING feast of the first-ever joint European Championships gets fully into gear today in Scotland, involving some of the top names from seven sports, backed up by event mascot, Bonnie, a young female harbour seal! Athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, rowing, triathlon and a new team golf event make up the 11-day competition, The athletics is being staged in Berlin with the other events taking place in Scotland, including Gleneagles being the venue for the golf, whilst Glasgow will be the “host” city. The concept is an attempt to create a similar kind of interest generated by the Olympic Games, and rather than European Championships for different sports being held at different venues and with separate schedules. More than 4,500 athletes are expected to compete for 188 gold medals. Cyclists Laura Kenny and Jason Kenny, swimmer Adam Peaty, athlete Dina Asher-Smith, gymnast Max Whitlock, triathlete Alistair Brownlee and

golfer Laura Davies are among the British athletes looking to bring home gold in their respective sports. Olympic and world champion Adam Peaty told the BBC :-”It brings all the attention to one place and brings a team ethos together as well because normally we’d go into a race and think ‘it’s just Europeans’ but now it’s got more of a brand and more prestige behind it.”
