fifteen years and ordered to pay 26 million euros fine to the Spanish courts. The Brit drug baron was arrested, along with son Ray, who was also one of the nine defendants tried in April over a massive ÂŁ10million, cocaine

seizure in Albir near Benidorm, which took place in July 2013. Ray Charrington, was also handed a three and a half year jail sentence after being convicted of money laundering. The three trial judges announced their verdicts and sentences, in a 66-page written document in which

they acquitted five of the nine defendants, including Brian’s French girlfriend Isabelle Robert and a Brit named as Wayne Sherwin.

Ethical Investing

- It is no longer just something for a few tree-hugging individuals

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial

In a world that is becoming more and more focused about the environment and ways to protect it, it is no wonder that I am being asked more and more about ethical investments.

Ethical investors were historically driven by their focus on doing what was best for the environment and communities and often this meant their investment could sometimes suffer. But times are changing and investing ethically can now be very rewarding. When a company owned by Warren Buffett (one of the world’s most successful investors) bought a stake in BYD, then a little-known Chinese car company, some sceptics were ridiculing the 2008 deal. Car and Driver, an industry magazine, commented that it was “hard to take BYD seriously” because many of its cars seemed to be copies of older Japanese models, while

their performance was lacklustre. “We drive faster in our driveways,” the magazine said. But Mr Buffettis now more than vindicated and the Chinese company’s focus on electric cars and climate-friendly motoring is delivering on the promise concealed in its acronym — Build Your Dreams. Its shares are trading at roughly 21 times forward earnings, or 2.5 times the ratio when Mr Buffett bought in. The deal stands as an example of how investing in renewable technologies can pay off and since 2008, BYD has become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles.

what is important to them in terms of investing. Being Independent means that we can chose the best possible investments for our clients and that includes investments with an ethical focus. As always, we promise to only recommend funds from well-known trusted companies, so you can be sure we aren’t going to invest your money into some unknown rain forest project in Brazil!!! Instead we turn to companies that you willhave heard of and trust, companies like Aviva, Standard Life, Rathbones, Jupiter and Henderson who all have ethical focused funds.

Socially responsible investing (SRI) is another approach to investing ethically. SRI is based largely on excluding certain companies from your portfolio, which you identify using a series of criteria related to, for example, environmental and social practices. Socially responsible investing continues to grow and expand as investors have taken a shine to building profits with a purpose. Photo: Charrington was described as one of Europe’s most investigated criminals

From Front Page After a long investigation, police entered a number of Costa Blanca properties belonging to Charrington and Robert in the raid five years ago. This followed a tip off from French police, claiming the couple were running a drugssmuggling operation, bringing cocaine into Europe from Venezuela. Police revealed at the time of the operation, they had seized around 200 kilos of cocaine worth £10million at an apartment in Albir, said to have been smuggled into Spain through the nearby port of Altea. Prosecutors claimed

Charrington tried to erase information he had chalked on a blackboard in his office about amounts of cocaine and sale prices during the raid on his home. The drug baron’s first brush with authorities came in 1992, when he was arrested along with gangster associate, Curtis Warren, whose personal fortune was so large he appeared on the Sunday Times Rich List. The pair were arrested after a shipment of more than 900 kilos of cocaine from Venezuela, sealed inside lead ingots in steel boxes was discovered. The subsequent trial collapsed after it

transpired Charrington was a police informant for the North-East Regional Crime Squad and Britain’s security forces went on to re-home him in Australia but his visa was revoked shortly after his arrival. However his drug trafficking activities continued after he settled in a fortified villa on the Costa Blanca, where he laundered millions of euros for North African drug dealers. He was jailed twice in the 2000’s after extradition proceedings were enforced by both German and French authorities. At the time of his final arrest in 2013, Spanish police described Charrington, as ‘one of the ten most investigated criminals’ by European police forces and a ‘leader of an international gang of drugs smugglers’. The court also imposed penalties of 10 and 12 years,

respectively, on two other defendants, Ivo Du Chatenier and Aleksei Pustovarov, for drug trafficking and membership of a criminal organization, after ruling that they actively participated in transportation, storage and distribution. of the drug However, they acquitted girlfriend, Isabelle Robert, who is the former lover of Alain Coelier, a French drugs trafficker and right-hand man of Charrington’s. Coelier, was shot dead on the Costa Blanca in June 2010 along with his bodyguard days after being released on bail from prison. Charrington and his son have been given five days to appeal against their convictions and sentences,. He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, claiming he earned his estimated 20 million fortune from property sales and “paid his taxes”

Back On Course THREE SUCCESSIVE months of falling passenger numbers at Alicante-Elche airport have been reversed, with October’s figures showing a yearly rise of five point five per cent. Airport operator AENA says that the facility served a total of 1,349,587 passengers last month, turning round drops in July, August and September, after five years of impressive rises. Domestic passenger numbers leapt up by over 15 per cent

Despite the comparative summer setback, Alicante-Elche airport is still set for a recordbreaking year, with 12.2 million passengers logged over the first ten months of 2017, which is a nought point eight per cent rise on the same period last year.

Daylong Mystery

A 75-OLD British man spent nearly 24 hours wandering around Alicante-Elche airport, after his wife reported him missing to the Guardia Civil in her home area of Rojales. The woman had returned home on a flight from England last week, and her husband was due to pick her up, but she could not spot him anywhere.

by Alex Tre;inski

After a period of time, she made her way to Rojales, and discovered that he was not there either, and she immediately reported her husband’s disappearance to the Guardia Civil. Guardia officers at the airport managed to locate his car in the parking area, and then by using CCTV footage, they pieced together

where he had go to. Video recorded him walking in a disorientated state, and almost 24 hours after his disappearance, he was discovered on the fourth floor of the airport terminal. He was said to be in good physical health after his ordeal, but still disorientated and uncertain about where he was and what he was doing.

The five men of Swedish, German and Spanish nationalities aged between 35 and 55, were all denied bail after been arrested in Almoradi, Elche, and San Miguel de Salinas. At least two thousand marijuana plants were found

Classical music was played 24 hours a day to the plants on a non-stop automatic loop, in a bid to help them grow more quickly and produce a better-quality crop. The Guardia said that the street value of the existing drugs and of the total

The Guardia Civil were made aware of potential smugglers after one of them noticed suspicious behaviour by two men while on a routine patrol. When they were approached the pair ran and refused to stop, prompting an officer to fire his gun in the air as a warning. One stopped and was detained but another continued to flee. Reinforcements were called and the second fugitive

quickly apprehended while a third man was arrested on suspicion of driving a getaway car. On searching the container where the men had first been spotted, the agents found a dozen large rucksacks containing the cocaine in one kilo bags. It is believed that neither the importer or exporter knew about the drugs and they had been placed inside the container in South America before the ship set sail. Different members of the gang based in Europe would then recover the cocaine upon entry to Spain.

Long live the Spanish ‘Buena Vida’

By the year 2040, Spanish citizens will have the longest life expectancy in the world, even though they drink more alcohol, smoke more cigarettes and work longer hours than people from the UK. A report from an American university survey, was published in the Lancet magazine and picked up by The Times newspaper in London, who ran an article giving the reasons why the Spanish will live for more than two years longer than Brits, even though they appear to have a less healthy lifestyle. The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s study calculated that Spaniards will live, on average until they were 85.8 – compared with 83.3, which is the age Brits can look forward to, putting the UK at 23rd on a list of 195 countries. However, the question is, why? And the answer lies with the lifestyle choices of the Spanish, which act as a counterweight to their less than healthy

by Andy Mansell

alcohol and tobacco intake. The article gave seven reasons for this longevity, with diet, exercise and sex featuring high on the list: 1. El Paseo – In Spain, ‘el paseo’ or ‘the walk’, features so highly on the daily routine that it has its own noun and the Spanish walk at least four days a week for 10 minutes or more, better still, 37% walk or ride bicycles to work. 2. Mediterranean Diet - If there is one thing the Spaniards do right, it’s eating fish, fruit and fresh vegetables, nuts, pulses and olive oil. Although consumption of red meat and salt is relatively high, only

20% of Spaniards buy processed foods while the British eat more processed food than anywhere else in Europe. 3. The Afternoon Siesta - Just 26 minutes of shut-eye is recommended by the Spanish Society of Doctors for Primary Health as it improves memory, mood and keeps your heart healthy and do it regularly to reap the rewards, but keep it short and sweet. 4. Breaks in the Working Day - In Spain, they work an average of 1,687 hours a year, 331 hours more than Germany, 173 more than France, 117 more than Switzerland but only six hours more than the UK, but take plenty of coffee breaks. 5. More Sex - Spanish men make the best lovers and Spanish women have sex on average 2.1 times a week, according to a study

carried out by Gedeon Richter while British women have sex 1.7 times a week. Sex reduces the risk of brain and heart disease as well as type 2 diabetes, while refraining from sex could bring these conditions on. 6. Vocabulary is More Upbeat - Spanish uses more positive words such as “love” and “laughter,” which boosts people’s moods, more than negative words like “sad” and “crying.” 7. Tapas for dinner - The Times seems believes that after eating a far bigger lunch than is common in the UK, dinner in Spain consists of tapas, hence the Spanish saying that roughly translates as “big dinners fill graves.” So, whether we live in Spain or just visit on holiday, it seems, we should all be throwing ourselves into the Spanish ‘Buena Vida’ …… just go easy on the booze and fags.

FRESH KIRSTY QUIZ

EIGHT police officers, including five National Police agents, are scheduled to appear in a Benidorm court this Thursday to answer questions about the death of Kirsty Maxwell in April 2017, after she fell from an apartment block. One of those expected to take the stand is the National Police officer who drafted the official police report and a colleague of his who took part in an inspection of the tenth-floor holiday

apartment. Thursday’s planned questioning follows the nonappearance last week of two British men who had been summoned as witnesses to what led up to Kirsty’s death. The judge was told that the men had been given little notice and were unable to travel because of work commitments, and now are expected to get a fresh summons.

Kirsty, who was on a hen-trip to Benidorm, fell to her death after mistakenly entering a tenth-floor room where five British men, all from the Nottingham area, were having a party. They strongly deny anything to do with Kirsty’s death, and no charges have been made against them. As reported last week, it has emerged that DNA belonging to somebody else had been found in samples taken from Kirsty’s body.

Nuns on the run

A small group of nuns have been evicted from the Santa Faz Monastery in Alicante where followers of their order, Las Clarisas (Poor Clares), have resided for 500 years. They have been historically cloistered in the monastery to watch over a relic that is housed there, la Cara Divina. The church itself has asked the four nuns to leave after an order from the Vatican that convents of less than four sisters should be closed. There are various rumours a r o u n d the move, including that the convent is to be converted to a museum and that there are plans to move the relic to San Nicolas Cathedral as a tourist

attraction. A campaign has been started to allow the women to remain but items have already started to be removed at the order of the bishop, including the church organ. Meanwhile the nuns have been forbidden from seeing visitors or other outsiders. The sisters themselves are said to be “desolate” as they see their role in life as guarding the relic until they die. There are said to be moves in place to find a fifth nun to join the order, taking the number up to the Vatican stipulated numbers to avoid closure.

Massive drugs bust

A GANG that used Torrevieja as a hub point for a national drugs operation has been dismantled, with 10 people being arrested across Spain. The joint operation between the National Police, the Guardia Civil, and the Tax Agency saw swoops against nine Spanish men and a Columbian woman, with a Torrevieja judge remanding all of them into custody. An additional three Spaniards were questioned and bailed by the judge. The year-long operation against the gang tracked

by Alex Trelinski

the smuggling of a large shipment of cocaine on a catamaran boat from South America to Portugal. The illegal cargo then ended up in Torrevieja, before being distributed to areas like Andalucia and Madrid, and even further afield to the Canary Islands. Extensive surveillance operations were untaken by Spanish authorities, and the first wave of arrests started in June including the seizure of many kilos of drugs, including local raids in Guardamar and Crevillente

in Alicante Province, and Molina de Segura in the Murcia region. Besides large quantities of drugs and guns, up to 10 highend cars were impounded, and over 600 thousand euros in cash seized, with the total figure taken in the police raids amounting to over one point seven million euros. Authorities say that the gang had already distributed close to a thousand kilos of cocaine said to have a retail value of 26 million euros, and had also established a money-laundering network to deal with their clandestine income.

Dozens of dogs rescued from property A case of animal abuse that the authorities are calling as bad as any Spain has seen in modern times came to light in Alicante this week. An astonishing 56 dogs as well as other animals were found living inside a residential property in conditions so cramped that one of them had even set up home inside a washing machine. The dogs, mainly pomeranians, westies, bodegueros and

chihuahuas were all showing signs of malnutrition while their living area was in an appalling state and littered with food and excrement. After being made aware of the situation following a complaint the Local Police Canine Unit went to the property and found 25 dogs upon entry. The remainder were in a locked room and

there were also turtles, ferrets, pigeons and a cat in the house. Due to the severity of the incident the Councillor for Animal Protection, Marisa Gayo, went personally to the property to speak to the householder and inspect the various animals. Ms Gayo and the police then made the decision to take the person responsible, a 56 year old Spanish woman, into custody.

Bullies parents fined by Simon Russell

THE parents of a gang of teenage children accused of a systematic bullying campaign against a girl have been ordered to pay a combined total of €3,300 in compensation to the victim. The ruling was made in Alicante Crown Court last week after the judge heard how the girl had twice been physically assaulted, was constantly called names and teased, received abusive phone calls from dawn onwards and was followed when out of school by gang members. As minors the eight defendants are not eligible to pay the fines but will have to perform community service for between nine months and a year. They are also barred from approaching or communicating in any way with the victim.

FRIDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2018

Drug battle continues THE Association of Nolotil Victims has filed a class action suit against the manufacturers of the drug,

a lawsuit that could have an estimated payout of 500 million Euros if successful. Long time campaigner,

medical translator Cristina Garcia from Javea, has approached law firm De Micco & Friends who will be filing the action on behalf of what is thought to be about 100 victims and their families. The “Weekender” reported last week how the Spanish Agency of Health had recommended to all medical practitioners that

Digital nomads cruising in Nolotil no longer be prescribed to British and Irish tourists. It is a common painkiller in Spain but has been linked to serious

illness and even death among some people of north European ethnicity and is already banned in much of northern Europe as well as the USA.

The incident happened on Monday evening when the man collapsed; someone ran to the Guardia barracks which is very close to the bar.

NEXT Tuesday Alicante will be welcoming it’s first digital cruise to the port with 450 self styled “digital nomads” on board. They work in the technology sector, often for major companies such as Apple and Microsoft, but work wherever they want, within reason. To prove the point many of them are working on-board the liner which embarked from Barcelona and is ultimately destined for Brazil. Alicante will be doing its best to market itself to a sector who have high purchasing power, often single people in well paid jobs. Alicante has a high tech presence with several such firms based there. Those nomads who are leaving the vessel will have the option of a guided tour which takes in digital projects in Alicante as well as making time for a low tech giant paella.

Kidnappers foiled by Simon Russell

DETAILS have emerged of how a Guardia Civil operation, named Wagen, culminated in the arrest of 14 people connected to a kidnap plot in Valencia province. MAY’S BREXIT SHAMBLES

This week’s Brexit withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU, which was agreed by Theresa May’s cabinet on Wednesday, led to Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab resigning on Thursday saying he “cannot in good conscience support” the UK’s draft deal. He was swiftly followed out of the door by Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey and junior Brexit minister Suella Braverman, with more departures expected as The Weekender went to print. Theresa May made a Commons statement on the Brexit agreement yesterday, telling MPs it was not a final agreement, but brings the UK “close to a Brexit deal”. She stated that the rights of British citizens living in the EU had been secured, and vice versa.

Assets such as a diversified growth fund or multi-asset credit funds which aim to minimise market downturns whilst still capturing upside may be beneficial in this context. “Assets of this nature will become increasingly important as schemes mature and pay out more as the path of returns becomes more crucial,” he said. “Falling behind the funding plan could be very painful, particularly in light of concerns around the strength of sponsors and therefore covenants in the medium term.” Article sourced from: https://www. ftadviser.com/pensions/2018/11/13/dbdeficits-triple-on-market-volatility/ Footnote: Transferring from a DB scheme is a complex area and requires careful consideration and specialist advice that is specific to the individual’s personal circumstances, objectives and motivations. Circus safety under scrutiny NOT renowned for their animal welfare record, questions are being asked about the use of wild animals in Russian circuses after a second big cat attack on a child in a few weeks. In this latest incident, a four year old girl was attacked by a leopard in the lobby of a permanent circus in Moscow, with CCTV footage showing it pouncing on her then dragging her by the neck. Although she is said to not

Metrology - a weighty subject

be badly hurt, onlookers said the little girl could easily have been killed. The leopard was in the lobby where some animals are paraded after the show for people to pay and have their photo taken with it. Last month four year old Ksenia Mityukova was attacked by a lion during a show at a circus in the Krasnodar region of the country. She has been in a coma ever since and is said to be fighting for her life; the trainer faces

prosecution for allowing his lion too close to the crowd. Circuses are a huge part of Russian tradition and many there would say that a circus without animals is like a bar without vodka, if you’ll excuse the national stereotyping. While sadly animal welfare is unlikely to be high on the agenda of a nation struggling to feed it’s people, attacks on children may see some restrictions finally being brought in.

Trump no show hogs Armistice headlines

METROLOGISTS, not to be confused with meteorologists such as Michael Fish and John Kettley, are very excited at the moment. Metrology is the science of measurement, and this month at the general conference of weights and measures in Versailles (sorry folks, invitation only), the metrologist fraternity will be voting on their biggest change in over a century, the measurement of the kilogram. Unique among weights the kilo is actually based on a tangible object, a lump of metal sitting in a triple locked vault in Paris. The IPK - international prototype kilogram - is the lump in question and every few years national metrology labs check their own IPK’s against it to ensure that their kilo really is a kilo. The problem is that

by Simon Russell

outside effects such as pollutants and cleaning can alter the weight of the IPK, even if only by the odd microgram (a millionth of a gram). The all important vote is set to change the system so the recognised kilo is based on the Planck constant, something from quantum physics that Sheldon from “Big Bang Theory” may be able to explain but I´m not about to even try. The important thing to know is that it is an unchanging, infallible constant. As one metrologist put it “If aliens knew we based our most important measure of mass on a lump of metal in a glass jar we would be the laughing stock of the universe.” As for the original IPK - paperweight anyone?

WHATEVER the occasion, however far removed it may seem from his sphere of influence, President Donald Trump always seems to take the lions share of the press headlines, often as not for the wrong reasons. The Armistice Day celebrations last week were no different when the President and most of the western world’s leaders were gathered in France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Mr Trump, who famously escaped the US draft due to a minor foot problem, cancelled a planned helicopter visit to a US military cemetery due to the fact that it was raining. French, German and Canadian leaders amongst others managed to attend but Mr Trump said he

by Matthew Richards

did not want to go by car as this would have “disrupted Paris traffic”. Not usually known for his selflessness, especially for something as minor as traffic disruptions, his decision drew immediate ire from, you’ve guessed it, Twitter. British Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood said “rain did not prevent our brave heroes from doing their job” while another Tory, Nicholas Soames, grandson of Winston Churchill was even more forthright calling Trump “a pathetic inadequate”. American politicians contrasted his move with the veterans who risked their lives daily in unimaginable conditions while a French

politician tweeted a picture of President Kennedy standing in the pouring rain without an umbrella in the 1961 ceremony. On Armistice Day itself President Trump was once again at the centre of things, looking stony faced as President Macron made a speech decrying the rise of nationalism which many saw as a thinly veiled attack on the USA’s increasingly insular policy stance. Trump said in a recent speech he proudly identified himself as a nationalist, a word with sinister connotations for many on both side of the pond. Mr Trump, for once, kept his council, but appears increasingly distant from mainstream European politicians as well as left of centre voters in his own country.

California wildfires Hollywood A-listers watch their homes burn

NATURAL disasters so often seem to hit the more vulnerable sectors of society around the world, but the huge wildfires in California have destroyed some of the most expensive real estate on the planet and affected actors, musicians and various Hollywood luminaries. As for the real human scale of the tragedy, at the time of writing 44 people had been confirmed dead, a figure that is sure to rise as over 200 remain missing. The worst hit town is called Paradise, a place name that will now forever be tinged with a certain black irony. 6,500 homes have been razed to the

ground in Paradise as strong winds made the inferno near impossible to control. Meanwhile celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Will Smith, Gerard Butler and Charlie Sheen took to social media as many of them lost homes in places such as Malibu. Ms Cyrus’ home was completely destroyed but she said she was just thankful that noone was harmed, including her animals. Butler posted images of himself outside his Malibu property - which was a smouldering wreck that looked more like he was starring in a scene from “Mad Max” than standing on his own front porch.

As the fires still blaze the political sniping has already started. President Trump sent out a tweet that many called insensitive (surely not), blaming poor forest management in the overwhelmingly Democratic state. Leonardo de Caprio tweeted about how climate change was to blame, something the current administration remains sceptical about. Meanwhile the wealthy and the not so wealthy are finding themselves homeless with many of the less well-off victims wondering where they will turn for help when the flames finally died out. As is so often the case

Arrested for slapping child by Matthew Richards

A 39 year old Russian woman has been arrested by Denia police after her former partner reported her to them for slapping their seven year old daughter in the face. The girl was in her mother’s home and the child said she had tried to wake up her mum who had overslept. She then became aggressive and as well as hitting her was shouting abuse. The girl ran out of the house to that of her Spanish father who contacted the authorities. The Russian woman went voluntarily to the police station but refused to testify. The police spoke to the child who said she had been hit on several occasions before; a medical officer noted that the slap had been hard enough to cause bruising. The authorities are deciding whether to charge the woman while her daughter has now moved in with her father.

DENIA Hospital has been declared the best in Spain for hip prosthesis procedures and one of the best generally for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Dr Nuria Franco, head of the Orthopaedics Section thanked her team for earning the accolade which is decided annually

Dr Franco said the high level of care was not just down to the surgeons but also technicians, anaesthetists, nurses, auxiliaries, trauamatologists, rehabilitators, physiotherapists and geriatricians who are all in their own way key to the final treatment.

I wonder if any of your readers have had the same reply as to why my UK state pension was late this week? My bank account had not been credited in the same time period as normal, and I decided to call the DWP in Newcastle upon Tyne to find out if there was a hitch. I was then told that all UK pensions were being paid late because of it being an American bank holiday, which got me wondering what was especially relevant about that. Apparently, it is very relevant as the person in Newcastle told me that all UK pensions are paid through a US bank, and therefore that is the reason that we sometimes get delays if you get a US holiday. You have to ask the question whether the British banking system is not competitive or efficient enough for it to handle state pensions? Mike Burton, Finestrat. EDITOR:- We’ve had a couple of similar queries here at The Weekender, and we spoke to somebody at the DWP in Newcastle. He told us that all state pensions paid to UK residents are routed through the domestic banks, but as far as he knew, payments into non-UK bank accounts are indeed paid via the United States. He was unable to give us a reason why, but presumably, in Mike’s case, he, therefore, has a Spanish bank account which his state pension goes into via America! I went to an excellent Remembrance Day service on Sunday at Mil Palmeras organised by the Orihuela Costa RBL. It was, as always, a moving occasion, and it was so good to see so many people from both the Spanish and British communities there. Jane Marriott, La Zenia.

Foreign buyers Popular Valencia on the up Spain’s residential market has been on a gradual rebound since around 2012, when luxury properties in places like Valencia City beginning to recover following the global recession, according to Kate Everett-Allen, head of international residential research for the real estate agency Knight Frank. The recovery is expected to continue, with the International Monetary Fund predicting that Spain’s economy will outperform those of Germany and France in 2018, Ms. Everett-Allen said. In Valencia City, third-quarter sale prices averaged about 1,900 euros a square metre, according to data from Lucas Fox. Old Town, a historic neighbourhood is one of the most popular areas with tourists and foreign buyers. A typical two-bedroom apartment there

STATISTICS from notaries show that 53,359 property transactions were made involving foreign buyers in the first half of this year, a 5.4% increase on the same period last year. The number is the highest since the figures started being measured separately in 2007. 7,613 of these were British, 8.8% of the total and the highest of any nationality despite

fears of a slowdown caused by Brexit worries. 4,211 of the buyers were from France and Germans were third on the list being involved in 4,138 sales followed by Romanians, Moroccans and Italians. There was a jump of almost 25% in property sales completed by the Irish over the period.

The Valencian Community saw the most overall sales to nonSpaniards, followed by Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Madrid. Most British purchases were on or close to the coast while nationalities such as Romanians, Chinese and Moroccans tend to stick to large inland cities where there is work to be found all year round.

sells for around 300,000 euros while a two-bedroom penthouse in a fully restored building can go for around 500,000 euros, said Miguel Angel Cantos, the general manager of the Valencia office of Engel & VĂślkers. Foreign buyers are also interested in seaside properties, Mr. Cantos said, although they often prefer the beach areas just outside city limits, where more property is available and there is more new construction. For foreign buyers, the appeal of Valencia lies in its affordability and manageable size relative to Madrid and Barcelona, as well as the access to a historic city centre and Mediterranean beaches, said Conor Wilde, the owner of Found Valencia, an agency that specializes in working with international clients.

Half of all rentals illegal

Stamp duty scrapped

Spain’s government moved quickly to overturn last week’s Supreme Court ruling that would have forced customers to pay mortgage stamp duty. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez used a Royal Decree to swiftly pass a law obliging banks to pay the tax, and that came into effect on Saturday. Banks previously said they had not decided if any extra costs from the tax would be passed on to clients.

by Neil Mortimer

But some in the sector said expenses could be recouped over the life of a mortgage. The Supreme Court had ruled last week that customers and not banks had to pay the tax, reversing a ruling in mid-October in which the court had upset what had been the status quo by declaring that lenders were legally responsible. Experts have warned that

the banks will simply pass on the cost to borrowers in higher mortgage rates or other charges, but the Government denies this will happen, and says it will take steps to prevent it without providing any details. The government’s new law will not be applied retrospectively, sparing banks from potentially having to pay back billions of euros to borrowers who for years paid the tax themselves.

A survey by “El Diario” found that about half of all holiday rental properties in Valencia City are in breach of laws regarding renting within the city boundaries. They compared the digital platforms which those places advertise on with the cities rental register and found major discrepancies. There are apparently 11,150 tourist apartments available for rent in the city via these sites, most of them in the districts of Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Extramurs and the beach area. However, there are only 5,715 such accommodations registered with the Valencian Tourist Agency, leaving 5,435 unregistered.

by Simon Russell

In theory, anyone breaching these laws can incur fines of up to €600,000 after recent changes in the guidelines. Asked about the situation Valencia Council said they had doubled the number of inspectors to four, although only 115 landlords are currently under investigation. Most of the inspectors time is currently taken up with looking into complaints about facilities and contract breaches and there are plans to hire ten more next year while local police will also become more involved.

Rising trends

OFFICIAL government figures released this week show that Spain’s property boom is continuing , with the latest statistics for September showing almost a 10 per cent rise in sales, compared to the same month last year. Statistics have shown yearly increases for eight for the nine months of the year documented so far, with analysts saying that the property market is the most buoyant it has been for nearly a decade.

by Alex Trelinski

La Rioja and Navarra lead the list of the largest rises in September, both at over 30 per cent, with the Murcia region coming in third at 24 per cent. Heavily populated areas like Madrid and Catalunya showed more modest rises, with home prices more expensive in those regions, whilst on the other hand the Balaerics actually recorded a fall of over four per cent in sales for September.

Market remains steady

THE latest quarterly report on the Spanish property market by a leading analyst in the sector shows that in general little changed in the period. There remains a glut of resale properties and combined with an increase in new builds and off plan purchases there is little chance of any real rise in this sector in the short term. There has been increased activity and interest from Scandinavian buyers, lending itself to an increase in estate agencies from these countries across

Spain. Many properties held by Spanish “bad banks are now being sold off, a good number of these to investment funds. This should eventually free up the bottleneck whereby there was a large amount of artificially cheap property on the market. Finally, the report noted that continued problems with climate change related flooding have meant that there are indications that front line properties may not be as attractive to buyers as they once were.

Local - Property Buy or Rent in Spain?

An estate agency in Spain claims that rent prices in Spanish cities have increased by 15% in just a year. The growing popularity of shortterm holiday lets is believed to be the main factor for this, spured on by the increased popularity of websites such as Airbnb. Although there are regulations being brought in to help curb this it has led to a limited supply of rental properties. With low transaction costs of between 10-15% and the lack of restrictions on foreigners buying spanish property. More residents and non residents are now considering buy rather than renting.

Health & Beauty - Local

A month of beauty treats AS part of a growing market for grown-ups, beauty advent calendars are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Some of them would appear to be pretty good value on the face of it, offering small samples in the hope that consumers will be tempted to buy the full sized version at a later stage. The Debenhams calendar, for example, is already on sale on eBay for £105 - despite having a retail price of £70. The Debenhams version contains products said to be worth over £150 with products by the likes of MAC, Lancome and Elemis and has been flying off the shelves, a rare success for the troubled retailer. The bite-size samples include perfume, mascara, nail polish, creams and even an eye mask as well as a £5 gift card behind the Christmas Eve window. Most of the major health and beauty retailers in the UK now sell these, with Boots saying there is a waiting list of 90,000 people for their No7 Advent Calendar.

Fight against pseudo-science

THE government has pledged to escalate the fight against what it refers to as pseudosciences. These include such unproven branches of medicine as homoeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic and even yoga. The practices are to be banned from health centres, both public and private on the grounds that they are scientifically unproven. There will also be a ban on them being taught in publicly funded universities and other educational centres. Science Minister Pedro Duque said, “We cannot allow universities to provide teaching that is not based on scientific evidence”. Advertising will also be heavily regulated,

by Simon Russell

especially when promoting unproven or sensational health benefits. Duque said that one of the main dangers of alternative therapy is when the sick use them and then forego conventional treatments, putting themselves at risk. As a final measure, the Health and Science Ministries are to ask the mainstream press to be more responsible when reporting things such as “miracle cures” which are generally unfounded and not based on medical facts. The government then has to spend time and money correcting the misinformation for the public.

Make Your Eyes Pop

• If you have a hard time using soft eyeliner pencils, draw a thick line onto your hand, use a stiff eye brush to pick up the pigment and then apply to your eye. • Need eye drops but don’t want to ruin your makeup? Breathe air in through your nose as you drop them into your eyes. Your tear ducts will suck in the drops before they have a chance to fall down your face. • Use a flesh colored liner on the water rim of your lower lash line to make eyes look bigger and brighter. • Apply a shimmery champagne color in the inner corner of your eyes to brighten your whole face. • Apply highlighter onto your brow bone. • Swap out your neutral

black or brown liner for a brightly colored one instead. • Apply concealer to your under-eye circles after foundation (not before) to better camouflage them. • Use eye shadow made for your eye color. • To correct eye makeup mistakes or sharpen a cat eye, dip a Q-tip in eye makeup remover and erase the offending makeup. • To make your eye color stand out, apply black liner around the entire eye, including the water line.ç • Instead of swiping on eye shadow, press the color into your eyelid with a brush or finger. This will give your lids a more pigmented look.

Doggie dreams

We’ve all seen our dogs demonstrate behaviors in their sleep that resemble what they do when awake. Paddling their legs, whining, growling, wagging their tails and twitching their noses makes us wonder what our dogs are dreaming about. Animal experts have studied the relationships between memory, sleep and dreams. They found that when rats were trained to run along a circular track for food rewards, their brains created a distinctive firing pattern of neurons. They then repeated the brain monitoring while the rats were sleeping. They observed the same signature brain activity pattern associated with running whether the rats were awake or asleep. In fact, the memories played at approximately the same speed during sleep as when the rats were awake.

So can we apply this to dogs?

Yes, we can take what is known about dreaming in rats and humans and apply the information to dogs as unless there is something special about rats and humans, cats and dogs must be doing exactly the same thing. The hippocampus is the portion of the brain that collects and stores memories. It is wired much the same way in all mammals. If you compared a hippocampus in a rat

to a dog; in a cat to a human, they contain all of the same pieces. So it´s plausable that as dogs sleep, images of past events replay in their minds, much the same way people recall experiences while dreaming. Dogs also experience periods of REM sleep. During REM their breathing becomes more irregular and shallow. There may be muscle twitching during REM and, when one looks closely, rapid eye movements behind closed eyelids can often be observed. It is during REM sleep that behaviors thought to be associated with dreaming (legs paddling, twitching, vocalizing, etc.) are most commonly observed.

What we want to believe about dog dreams

When we observe our dogs sleeping, it’s almost impossible to imagine that they are not dreaming. It is tempting to believe that our fourlegged best buddies are reenacting their recent experiences; playing at the dog park, sniffing in the woods, chewing on a treasured bone, and chasing squirrels. Sigmund Freud theorized that dreaming was a “safety valve” for our unconscious desires. Perhaps he is correct, and, when our dogs sleep, they dream about catching the neighbor’s pesky cat, continuous belly rubs in conjunction with unlimited dog treats, and stealing the dinner from the dining room table.

Crowded caves

THE Covas Tallada in Javea received about 130 visitors an hour this summer just released figures have shown, another increase on previous years. However unlike many other tourists destinations this is not something to be celebrated as this is well over the amount of visitors that ecologists have said that the caves should be getting before they become overcrowded and risk damage.

by Matthew Richards

Sun cream in the water, broken rocks from careless climbers, litter and even graffiti are regular problems at the caves. Some people are taking picnics and staying all day while some groups have even been camping in tents overnight. As has happened before there is talk next year of seriously restricting or even banning visitors to protect the delicate infrastructure.

ALTHOUGH not generally thought of as one of its biggest markets, there were still 70,000 US citizens who visited the Valencian Community last year. While many of these would have had a flying visit to Valencia as part of a “grand tour that also includes the likes of Madrid, Barcelona and the Alhambra Palace many came for a sun, sea and sand break. A group of American travel journalists visited Denia this week to see the town’s charms for themselves

and write about it for more independent minded tourists from their homeland. Eduardo Dolon from the Tourism Department showed the four around, highlighting the culture, beaches, sporting activities and, of course, the famous local cuisine. Mr Dolon said that Denia was keen to tap into the US market which has huge potential in what is becoming an increasingly shrinking world for tourists.

NEW Mustang Bullitt If you’ve not seen Bullitt, the latest Mustang won’t mean an awful lot to you. The 11-minute car chase through San Francisco in the 1968 Steve McQueen movie has gone down in history. One of the original Mustangs used during filming was discovered recently and restored in time for the film’s anniversary celebrations. Based on the revamped Mustang, the Bullitt special edition is available in two colours: Shadow Black or Dark Highland Green. There are bespoke 19-inch black alloy wheels, red Brembo brake callipers and a faux-Bullitt fuel-filler cap. Inside, there’s a white cue ball gearshift knob, green stitching on the standard seats and a numbered plaque on the dashboard. There’s no option of the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine with the Bullitt - buyers are forced to have a V8 petrol with a power boost of 10PS compared to the regular Mustang. Which is no hardship. There’s no auto option, either - just a sixspeed manual shifter. And the engine is pure euphoria. An active valve

performance exhaust is standard, letting you to tweak the volume depending on how anti-social you wish to be. In track mode, it’s loud enough to be heard streets away. Rev the engine at a standstill, and the car will rock like an old-school muscle car. A clumsy getaway will easily unstick the rear wheels, while the incredibly-long gearing will encourage you to hold onto low gears as the engine pulls and pulls until it finally runs out of revs at around 6500rpm. It can hit 80mph in second gear, and third is good for 120mph. For most of us, that leaves fourth, fifth and sixth gears redundant apart from during motorway cruising. On twisty roads, the latest Fiesta ST probably wouldn’t have an issue keeping up with the Mustang Bullitt. It’s a wide car and its fiery nature means you’re hesitant

to apply the power too early heading out of bends especially in anything other than perfect conditions. But it’s a rewarding experience. The steering is actually quite pleasant, and the car’s happy to keep you informed as to how close to the limit you

are. And when you get there, it’s not as snappy as you might expect. Despite the cosmetic upgrades to the interior, it still doesn’t compare to something like an Audi A5 or BMW 4 Series. There are hard plastics galore and

switchgear that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Focus from several generations ago. The Mustang is leagues behind more conventional European rivals. Its interior is old-fashioned, it costs a fortune to run and

practicality isn’t its strong point, either. When you’re in the right mood, though, there’s nothing else on the market that will make you feel as special as the Mustang Bullitt does for less than €50,000.

Does it come in Black?

Stocktaking efficiency Skoda is currently testing advanced drone technology that can identify and count empty containers outside the factory from the air. Skoda has collaborated with Czech specialists Robodrone to implement the first testing phase. The drone is equipped with LIDAR (light detection and ranging) technology to accurately identify and count unoccupied

containers at the car manufacturer’s factory in Mladá Boleslav. The data is then automatically transferred to the logistics department to be processed. The drone can fly up to 20 km/h and has the ability to carry a load of up to 5kg. A LIDAR sensor captures up to 300,000 images per second and navigates using a 3D map. The drone detects and counts the equipment containers

using specially designed algorithms developed uniquely for Skoda. Testing has been live since May 2018 and the technology has seamlessly integrated into Skoda’s regular operations. During the next development phase, the drone will get its own ‘nest’ and the batterypowered device will then be able to autonomously navigate to a charging station.

Aston Martin has made a significant and symbolic stride towards the luxury brand’s first SUV - now officially confirmed as being named DBX - with the first development prototype being put through its paces along a demanding Welsh Rally stage in the hands of the company’s Chief Engineer, Matt Becker. This first test for DBX signifies the start of an extensive testing programme. One that has begun in Wales, as a nod to Aston Martins’ new St Athan production facility in the Vale of Glamorgan. Though simulation is an essential part of DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing, in which the SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle some of the world’s harshest

environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahnen and Nürburgring Nordschleife. The unique nature of DBX in the Aston Martin range means it requires a dedicated test programme; one that features new processes, procedures and standards that reflect its all-purpose role. So, while it will perform with the verve and poise of a true Aston Martin, its dynamic envelope has to extend into areas previously off-limits to the marque’s sporting roots. Naturally t h i s includes impressive multiterrain and towing capabilities

as befits a state-of-the-art SUV. Aston Martin Chief Engineer, Matt Becker, said: ‘We have already developed and tuned DBX in the driving simulator, which has enabled us to make excellent progress in advance of the first physical prototype cars being available. Still, it’s always a big day when you get to put the first actual miles on an early prototype and I’m delighted with the near perfect correlation between the simulator and this prototype.”

friday 6TH juLY 2018

Halloween and Bonfire Night have been and gone, the nights are drawing in and the ‘holidays are coming’, courtesy of the Coca Cola trucks, which have already appeared on our screens. There’s only one thing missing to complete the traditional run up to the festive season …… a bunch of ‘has-beens’, ‘wannabees’ and ‘never-were’s’ competing to chew on sheep’s eyes, witchety-grubs and kangaroo’s crown jewel, all for our nightly entertainment. Yes, I’m a Celebrity Get Me out of Here returns to our screens this coming Sunday evening, complete with a new presenter, the gorgeous Holly Willoughby and the usual gang of hopefuls hoping to be crowned King or Queen of the Jungle by Christmas. The production team have pronounced this year’s line-up as one of the best ever, but scanning through the list of contestants, I have to say I don’t recognise many names, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

There’s the guy who does DIY SOS, the big, frightening bird from The Chase, Larry Lamb’s niece, a comedy actress, a boyband member with 1.7 million Twitter followers, an X Factor runner up, Frank Lampard’s uncle, two soap actors and a showbiz gay. Appetite whetted a little? Of course it is and so is mine, as it is every year and I’ll be tuned in to see the first contestants dropped in and to see the on screen chemistry develop between Holly and Dec, without his other half, Ant. As in previous years, further celebrities will be added as the show progresses, with rumours circulating heavily that Noel Edmonds is to be one of them. Not sure I’m too keen on seeing his Crinkly Bottom in the jungle shower of an evening though …… It’ll put me off my supper!

Who is it doll? You haven’t made it in the heady world of show business until you have a replica doll made in your likeness. Now I can understand why people might want to buy dolls of popstars and groups like Little Mix, The Spice Girls, Westzone and Boylifeetc, etc, but why would anyone need a replica of an actor or actress baffles me. Take for instance, British thespian, Idris Elba, who made his name internationally in the crime drama Luther. Well, Idris has recently been voted Sexiest Man Alive by US publication, People Magazine, an accolade he took with typical British grace and good humour. ‘I was like, “Come on, no way. Really?” Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, “Yeah, you are kind of sexy

today”. But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.’ Said Idris. I’ve no idea what his reaction might be to his 850 pound replica doll that’s just been released on public sale, because it looks nothing like him and while we’re on it, why and who would want a doll of him anyway? No matter,it’s caused great hilarity on Twitter, with followers saying the doll looks more like Montell Williams, or the Baddie from Disney’s Alladin. One user wrote with humour, “This doll is supposed to be Idris? Somebody getting fired” Take a look at the photo ….. Idris it ain’t. To me it looks like ex England defender Rio Ferdinand.

Sad news for comic book and superhero fans this week, with the news that Stan Lee, co-creator of Marvel comics passed away, after a short illness, at the ripe old age of 95. The man who helped to create Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Daredevil, co-founded the iconic comic book brand in the 1960’s, was also responsible for allowing his superheroes to be brought to life in movies. Marvel, under Lee and fellow co-founder Jack Kirby was widely credited with pioneering new methods of comic book storytelling and characterisation, addressing more serious themes, and in the process, keeping and attracting readers into their teens and beyond. He was the editorin-chief of Marvel Comics, later became its publisher and chairman leading its expansion from a small division of a publishing house to a

large multimedia corporation. Lee’s superhero

characters were never presented as perfect and their flaws and imperfections were easily identified with, by his legions of

readers. His stories also stretched beyond the normal boundaries, tackling ‘real world’ subjects such as racism, bigotry, intolerance, discrimination and prejudice, which constantly challenged the Comics Code Authority. Once his characters hit the big screen in blockbuster movies, Lee, like Hitchcock before him, appeared in small cameo roles, much to the amusement of his army of fans. Earlier this week, I heard a snippet of an interview with the great man, where he explained how he came up with the idea of Spider-Man. Sat at his desk, he watched a fly crawling up the wall, but didn’t really like the name Fly-Man, nor Bug-Man, then he thought of a spiders ability to cling to walls and loved the way the two words worked together. He wanted Peter Parker to be ordinary, not particularly good looking, uneasy with girls and decided he should be an orphan with issues ….. and so Spider-Man was born. RIP Stan the Marvel Man.

Call me...Phyllis!

Toe curling moment of last week arrived courtesy of ageing rocker Rod Stewart, who in case you weren’t aware, recently received a knighthood from our dear old Queen. Can’t for the life of me remember what for, but it was probably something like services to the hair dye industry. So,‘Rodders’ uncomfortable moment occurred last Friday,

when he appeared as a guest on Loose Women. It appears the 73 year old crooner may have forgotten to put in his hearing aid that morning, because, as presenter, Andrea Mclean introduced him as “Sir Rod Stewart”, the singer leaned in to her and said “SIR”. A perplexed Andrea introducing him as Sir Rod Stewart, for a second time, this time, repeating specifically:

39

“Sirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Rod Stewart”. Maybe, becoming a knight of the realm has gone to Sir Rod’s head a little, but let’s not forget, he and showbiz mate Sir Elton John, always refer to each other using girls names. Elton is Sharon and Rod ….. well let’s just say Andrea would have been right on the button if she’d introduced him as “Dame Phyllis!”

A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. FRIDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2018

Sports & Local News

Pego Golf Society A gloomy day at Oliva Nova saw 33 players playing a Stableford Match. We welcomed 4 guests, George Smith, Graham Wise, Ben Wilcock and Mark Onwal. The results were as follows: Division 1 The winner was Shaun O’Gorman with a great score of 38 points playing off 4.7 Second was Stevie Patton with 34 points playing off 11.4 Third was Steve Crossan with 33 points playing off 15.6 Division 2 The winner was the steady Fiona Sankey on the podium yet again with 36 points playing off 31.5 Second was Peter Cornes with 34 points playing off 26.3 Third was Patrick Lynch also with 34

points playing off 25.1 The guest prize was won by Ben Wilcock with 28 points on countback. Nearest The Pin on Hole 5 was Adrian Marsh with 2.7m and on Hole 16 Ben Wilcock with 2.1m. Nobody had a two today so a card draw was won by a happy Penny Barden. There were 81 Balls in the Water, guessed correctly by Peter Brown. In the final of The Plate Match Play, Penny Barden beat Stella Fox with one up on the 18th. Tight match! Next Tuesday we have the Blacktower Challenge, a Medal competition. Any guests wishing to play, subject to handicap, contact Penny Barden on pegohandicapsec@gmail.com

Mass brawl before match

OVER 50 football fans were involved in a major outbreak of violence before last weekend’s match between Castellon and Hercules. Alicante based Hercules were at home for the third tier encounter when the violence broke out about an hour before the kick-off on Sunday. A 41 year old man was taken by ambulance to Alicante General Hospital with undisclosed injuries, while at least two others required treatment at the

by Simon Russell

hospital for cuts and other wounds but were released shortly after The Local and National Police have so far identified 55 people involved in the fracas and three have been arrested, one for an assault on an officer. Two Local Police officers on patrol were first on the scene and it is believed to be one of those who was assaulted. Back up soon arrived

in force and one officer reported that at least 15 shots were fired into the air before the crowd began to disperse. In the aftermath a total of seven people had been injured to some degree with flares and sticks reportedly being used as weapons. The match itself ended in a 1-1 draw which would have disappointed top of the table Hercules against a Castellon team firmly in the relegation zone.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

After last weeks goal bonanza, Goals were in short supply in the Premier League at the weekend. The one Monday Night game and a full Premier League programme at the weekend only provided the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with 20 goals, 7 clean sheets, 35 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Brighton’s Dale Stephens who received a straight red from Referee Martin Atkinson. John’s team Wee Aggies made it 5 weeks at the top of the A.F.F.L.when they extended their lead at the Summit to 24 points over 2nd places Pauline’s Vodka Army. Linda’s Team Tapas moved back into the top 3 when they climbed up 3 places while Jin’s Dream team went the other way and slipped down 5 places to 11th. Down at the very foot of the table,

Kim’s team Ginger United had a poor week only collecting 4 points which have left them hovering over the trap door, 6 points away from Mark’s team Inter Rubber. Pauline’s Vodka Army held on to the top spot of our Mark Carter Ladies Section for the 2nd week running by holding off the challenge from Linda’s Team Tapas who moved to within 13 points of the leaders. Tarazara is in 3rd place just ahead of Barbra’s XI. Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja top scored in this Division with a tally of 48 points, courtesy of Liverpool’s shaky victory over a forlorn Fulham. At the other end of the table, Kim’s Ginger United are still chasing Jackie’s team, Winchester, the gap now only 12 points. In our Junior League Harley’s Ginger Ninjar have reduced

William & Henry lead at the top to 10 points while young Ollie’s team Olly F.C. are just on the edge of a top 3 place. It’s a bit early to be handing out Wooden Spoons but it’s fair to say that Fleetwood Gian is odds on to finish bottom of this section as they are now a massive 69 points adrift of Tommy’s Real City. There were not many points to be had in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League due to the lack of goals being scored However Bill’s team East Fifers continued their good run of form by keeping hold of the top spot for the 2nd week running. Kenny’s Albir Boro Army are 13 points behind them then comes Nick’s Black Cats. Down in the Basement, Liz’s Cookie’s Crew 61 are trailing Joanna’s Hugonauts F.C. by 9 points. Three teams will go into our

Monthly Wine Draw and they are Two teams who top scored with 48 points, Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja and Adam’s Equipo Sin Hombre. The other team to join them is our lowest scoring team Mark’s Inter Rubber who only managed a paltry 3 points. In our Champion of Champions League, Pauline’s Vodka Army have marched to a comfortable 28 point advantage over Joe’s Keith Lard F.C.Chris’s P.G.Tips are in 3rd place and are still well in contention to win this new League. Dave’s team The Hatters are still favourites for the drop as they have fallen 22 points away from Pam’s People. Manager of the Month for November is being kindly sponsored by the Brew Rock in Albir who have music Daily and serve up an excellent A La Carte

Menu. With 2 weeks gone Pauline’s Vodka Army have control with a fragile 4 point lead over Tony’s Fat Boy Blues. Two teams are in joint 3rd position and they are Sharon’s Rover & Out and Kevin’s Norfolk & Good, both still in with a good chance of winning this super Prize. The fastest moving team this week is Dave’s Benidorm Soul who moved up 26 places to number 87 in the main League which has qualified him for a super Breakfast for 2 sponsored by the Bar Code in Alfaz. At the time of going to press I have not had time to collate all the points for the 1st Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition but I’m sure by the time you read this all the results will be up on our website. A report on the ties will appear on these pages next week.

Crocked Kruis

Lock George Kruis will miss England’s remaining autumn Tests against Japan and Australia with a calf injury. The British and Irish Lion, 28, was replaced by Charlie Ewels late in Saturday’s brave 16-15 defeat by New Zealand. England, who are also missing Joe Launchbury in the second row,

face Japan tomorrow and then Australia on November 24th at Twickenham. But after they were given a big scare last Saturday, along with a late disallowed England try that should have been given, the All Blacks will be looking to get back their best with a big challenge away to the Six Na-

tions champions, Ireland, in Dublin tomorrow night/ Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has made six changes for Saturday’s Mur-

rayfield Test with South Africa after his side beat Fiji, whilst Wales are also likely to make multiple changes for their clash with Tonga.

Emotional Westwood by Neil Mortimer

England’s Lee Westwood shot a stunning eight-under-par 64 to win the Nedbank Challenge in South Afrcia - his first victory on the European Tour for four years. The former world number one took the outright lead from Louis Oosthuizen on Sunday with a birdie at 17, completing the back nine in 31 to finish on 15 under. The South African’s challenge faded as he finished third on 11 under behind Spain’s overnight leader Sergio Garcia. “I’m a bit emotional to be honest,” said a tearful Westwood, 45. He told Sky Sports: “You’re never sure whether you’re going to be able to do it again.”

Ranieri returns Claudio Ranieri, who guided Leicester to the Premier League title in 2016, is back in the English big time, as Fulham sacked Slavisa Jokanovic this week. Jokanovic makes way with the Cottagers sitting bottom of the Premier League table with five points from 12 matches. Italian Ranieri, 67, has been

by Alex Trelinski

given a “multi-year” contract by the Londoners. “Making a change without having the right answer or succession plan was not an option,” said Fulham chairman Shahid Khan. “So having someone of Claudio’s calibre ready to accept our challenge was comfort-

ing but, most of all, essential” “It is an honour to accept Mr Khan’s invitation and opportunity to lead Fulham, a fantastic club with tradition and history,” said Ranieri, who spent last season in charge of French club Nantes. Ranieri’s first game in charge will see Fulham host Southampton at Craven Cottage on Saturday, 24 November.

England takes on Croatia this Sunday afternoon at Wembley, and they could already know what their fate will be in terms of making it into the finals of the UEFA Nations League. As Wayne Rooney was given the strange privilege of a farewell cap against the United

by Alex Trelinski

States last night(after The Weekender went to press), there was more important business in hand, with a Nations League group A4 meeting in Zagreb between Croatia and Spain. If the Croatians won or drew, then it’s game

on for this Sunday’s Wembley clash, which England would have to win to qualify for next summer’s finals. There would also be a possibility that England could also be relegated depending on what happened in Zagreb, and if they lose to the Croatians.

England’s surprise victory at Spain opened up the group, but they will have to do without the services of Spurs right-back, Kieran Trippier, who had to pull out of Gareth Southgate’s squad due to suffering a groin injury in his side’s Premier League victory against Crystal Palace.
