Couple arrested for abducting their own baby Hamiltons Javea (+34) 96 579 0803

by Andy Mansall

A young couple who fled from a hospital in Mallorca with their new born baby, were arrested by National Police officers in Altea earlier this week, on charges of child abduction. The pair, who were accompanied by their two other children and the baby, were apprehended by agents at Altea train station.

Hamiltons Calpe (+34) 96 639 7944

Hamiltons Moraira (+34) 96 649 1883

Police sources confirmed that a search warrant was issued after the baby had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Neonates of the University Hospital of Son Espases, in Mallorca. Whilst undergoing treatment and tests, the couple, aged 20 and 23, took the infant from the hospital before official discharge notice was given. They fled from the car park at high speed on a motorcycle with the baby in their arms, at one point dropping

the child endangering its life. Following the arrest of their parents in Altea, a court in Benidorm placed the children and baby into the care of the child protection agency, as all three of the children had tested positive for cannabis.A statement from the EP agency confirmed that the children had been arrested for the crimes of abduction and dereliction of family rights and duties.

As the mother of the children had already been taken into child protection herself in 2009, they issued a declaration to the court, for charges of abandonment and asked for the assumption of urgent and precautionary administrative protection,

Altea train station

as well as the constitution of emergency family care. The agency had already declared the two older children as ‘at risk’, as the family were of no fixed abode and the minors were considered to be in a vulnerable situation.

Is leaving money in the bank all that safe? Time flies, and seems to get faster as you get older! How often do you reminisce about the past and then realise it was 10/20/30 years ago!

Let’s take 1997 for example; the year the world mourned the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales, and the UK saw a landslide general election victory for the Labour Party under Tony Blair. Katrina and the waves won the Eurovision song contest with Love Shine a light and the year that channel 5 was launched. The average price of a house was £68k and a litre of petrol?... 61p. It’s crazy how live evolves, the people and memories we pick up along the way, the mistakes we make and lessons we learn. Whilst technology is constantly changing and the way we do things is different, there is always one thing that stays the same – inflation. I cannot tell you how many times I have

sat down with clients who haven’t taken inflation seriously. It was only last week that a client walked into the office and during his financial review it was revealed that before moving to Spain, 20 years ago, he sold his UK property and brought a Spanish property and had £70k surplus. Not knowing what to do with it, he decided to leave it safe and secure in a UK bank account. The years have passed and my client has settled into Spanish life and has never looked back. The £70k he originally put in his UK bank was still there and over-all he was happy with his life decisions. That was until I calculated the effect of inflation on his £70k, in today’s terms his £70k is worth the equivalent of £46k meaning he’d lost £24k in spending power – and people think the bank is the safest place to keep your money!

Over that same period, if my client had placed his money into a cautious investment, returning 4% after fees, that £70k would now be worth £153k beating inflation by £33k.

As a truly independent advisory, Chorus have access to the whole of the market, however two providers who have proved incredibly popular with our clients here in Spain are The Prudential & Old Mutual. These FTSE 100 companies have a combined 40 million clients worldwide and have set up solutions specifically for Expats in Spain. It’s reassuring for our clients that we only recommend solutions from wellknown, ‘house-hold name’ institutions.

The Prudential and Old Mutual Spanish compliant bonds offer a whole host of advantages which can include tax efficiency, inheritance tax mitigation, ease of accounting and no requirement to report on the Modelo 720 as an overseas asset. Inflation risk is real and should be taken seriously. You don’t need to take aggressive financial risks to protect against it, just sensible financial planning. ‘Benidorm exposed’ until end of August The streets of Benidorm have recently been adorned with fifty large-format photographic installations depicting various images as part of an art exhibition entitled ‘Benidorm Exposed’. The artwork has been hung in a number of strategic locations across the resort aimed at providing maximum exposure to passers-by. In celebration of the sixty-year anniversary of Benidorm becoming one of the first towns in Spain to sanction the wearing of bikinis on its beaches, the subheading of the exhibited artwork is ‘The war of the bikini: Photography and Tourism’. Launching the initiative on a walking tour of the city, accompanied by mayor Toni Perez and curator, Alicia Lamarca, councillor for culture Ana Pellicer, explained that the exhibition shows “photographs of great

by Andy Mansell

quality and originality linked to tourism” Featuring work by eight artists, including local photographer Simeón Nogueroles, “whose work,” said Pellicer, “is a documental proof of the development of a whole era. Simeon knew how to portray the people and life of Benidorm and his testimony coincides in time with the beginning of tourism in our city.” A joint venture between the town’s cultural department in collaboration with Visit Benidorm Foundation, Agència Valenciana de Turisme, Alameda Hotel, Code Studio, Jas Arquitectura, Don César and La Favorita, the photos will be displayed until August 31st. Detailing the locations within the resort, where the photos can be viewed, the

councillor said, “they can be seen in the very busy spaces, well known to all of us, in the heart of Benidorm”. These include several urban garden spaces within the city, such as Espaid’ArtUrbà ‘Carrascos’, El Puente, Plaza de la Hispanidad, Dr Pérez Llorca, El Torrejó, and Paseo de la Carretera, covering the facade of Museu ‘Boca del Calvari’. Exhibition curator, Alicia Lamarca thanked, “the Department of Culture and the City Council for its commitment to street art,” which will allow residents and visitors “to see Benidorm from another point of view, bringing art closer to people in a very natural way while walking and also helping up and coming artists to be discovered. “ The fifty images will go on display at the resort’s Museu Boca del Calvari, once the exhibition ends.

Compensation for flight delay HOLIDAY operator Thomas Cook has admitted that recent delays and the subsequent actions taken by some staff on a Lanzarote to Manchester flight were “completely unacceptable.” 300 mainly British passengers

by Simon Russell

were delayed for 18 hours, with three of those hours entailing being sat on the plane without air conditioning or water despite the intense heat. Reports came through of vomiting and people in a state of near collapse with babies being

among the travellers. Staff refused to hand out water saying they needed it for the flight to Manchester. At the airport, there were complaints of a lack of staff or information. Thomas Cook’s Chief of Operations Paul Hutchings said “the flight was delayed due to a technical problem and,

although every effort was made to get the plane up and running, it is clear to me that our customers endured unacceptable temperatures for which we must apologise.” He said there will be a full review of their procedures and all passengers will each receive compensation of €500.

Double drowning tragedy FRIDAY 20TH JULY 2018

Allergy tragedy by Matthew Richards

AN investigation has begun after a ten-year-old girl died when undergoing an allergy test in a Valencian hospital. The tragedy occurred last Tuesday at the cities Hospital Clinico when the child complained of a severe headache after taking the test. She lapsed into unconsciousness and died two hours later. Apparently, initial reports from the autopsy have said that her death was not related to the tests but she suffered an unrelated cardiac incident. Monica Anton, head of the Valencian Allergy and Immunology Association said that these tests could be fatal but this was very, very rare. Allergy testing has been known to trigger asthma attacks or anaphylaxis shock.

TWO people in their seventies died on Valencian beaches over the weekend in unrelated tragedies. Both occurred in the province of Castellon, on the beaches of Benicarlo and Oropesa. In the first incident, the authorities were alerted of someone in difficulty at Playa Morrongo de Benicarlo at 6pm on Saturday. A 79-year-

old man had been pulled from the water and CPR was given but he was declared dead at the scene. At about the same time an ambulance was called to Playa del Morro de Gos de Oropesa where a 72-yearold male was also given CPR but was again unable to be revived.

Put a tiger in your tank ALTHOUGH not as wellknown as that most famous of Valencian gastronomic creations, paella, horchata is very much THE Valencian drink, especially in the summer months. Made from locally grown chufas (tiger nuts) the health benefits of the sweet but refreshing drink are

You’ll see horchata (horxata in Horchata is rich in vitamins C and Valenciano) for sale in all major E, contains vital minerals such supermarkets in the region but now being trumpeted. It has “complex sugars” as calcium, iron and potassium, the best place to try it is a bar or making it an energy drink but far has antioxidants and contains heladaria selling it fresh and cold healthier than the caffeine based zero glucose. A Spanish diver was among the team who rescued 12 boys and their football coach from treacherous caves in Thailand last week in an event that received global coverage. Fernando Raigal learnt to dive in the armed forces and was in Bangkok when the group were found trapped in the caves, two weeks after they had first disappeared and when hope was fading. Experienced divers were at a premium for the operations and although Fernando is an open water diver by training he was still invaluable, helping set up the cables that guided the boy’s home. He

said that the youths and their coach had been heavily sedated to avoid panic attacks when they were extracted, and many were unconscious when they were brought out. Saman Gunan, a Thai Navy Seal diver died in the lead up to the rescue, emphasising the dangers of the mission. All the boys and their coach are now in the hospital and are expected to make full recoveries. Mr Raigal said he disliked the term hero saying “At the end of the day we responded to a call for help and we did the best we could.”

Pervert Caught Castle

Early Sizzler T E M P E R AT U R E S across Alicante Province cooled down during the week, after Elche recorded a Monday high of 37.9 degrees, the highest figure in the region, and some five degrees above the average July levels. The Marina Alta area averaged 37 degrees,

which was also the same down south for Orihuela City, whilst Alicante City recorded a more manageable 33 degrees. Hot Saharan winds brought the temperature hike last weekend and at the start of the week, which is a more common feature in August and early September.

A 44-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on the Costa del Sol for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl, after travelling all the way to meet her in Torrevieja last month. The Malaga-area resident used social media to gain the teenager’s trust, and then threatened to blackmail the girl by publishing photographs that she had sent him, if she did not meet up in Torrevieja. The Argentinian man drove up to the city and met her at a shopping area, before taking her

by Alex Trelinski

by bus to an apartment which he had rented for just a day. The man then sexually assaulted her, and he left the distressed teenager on the floor, as he drove

back to the Costa del Sol. The girl went to a nearby bar and asked for help in getting back to her home, where she immediately told her mother what had happened. A report was filed with the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, who after two weeks of inquiries, liaised with their Guardia colleagues down south for the man to be arrested. His return to Torrevieja was this time to see a judge, who remanded him into custody.

A Sharp Exit

TWO PEOPLE beat by Simon Russell a hasty retreat from their van, as it burst into engine. They pulled over onto flames on the AP-7 in the south of Alicante the hard shoulder, and Province on Monday got out of the van just as a fire started, which morning. The vehicle was totally destroyed the motoring down the vehicle. Firefighters from northbound carriageway in the Pilar de la Pilar and Torrevieja Horadada area when put out the blaze, with the passengers heard the occupants escaping an explosion from the uninjured.

rescue

A young man has an eagle-eyed tourist to thank after he was spotted lying in undergrowth at the foot of Alicante’s Santa Barbara Castle. The tourist called the emergency services who called out a helicopter and firecrew. The rescue proved difficult due to the inaccessibility of the spot where the man was lying, but eventually he was extricated and flown to the heliport at San Vicente del Raspeig and then transferred in an awaiting ambulance to Alicante General Hospital. The identity of the man, said to be about 30-years-old, is unknown as is how he came to be where he was although it appears he fell from the castle. His condition is described as serious and he has multiple injuries including head traumas.

FRIDAY 20TH JULY 2018

Third British youngster dies at Magaluf apartment TEENAGER Thomas Channon has become the third British tourist to die from a balcony fall at Magaluf’s Eden Roc apartments in recent months. Thomas, aged 18 and from Wales, was celebrating the completion of his A-levels on a holiday with friends. Spanish authorities confirmed his death last

Saturday, saying he fell about 21 metres from a communal hallway at the complex. He was not a guest there and was staying in the nearby Universal Hotel; police believed he wandered into the Eden Roc by accident after losing his friends late at night. A mother of one of Thomas’ friends said they had visited

the wall where the young man fell and that it was “way too low, only about knee height.” Last month 20-yearold Tom Hughes died at the complex in similar circumstances, while back in April 19-year-old Natalie Cormack fell while climbing from a friend’s apartment after she had lost her keys.

Hate crime arrest A 42-year-old man has been arrested in Denia and charged with hate crimes relating to homophobic attacks on his neighbours. The victims said that the verbal attacks had been going on for some time, but last week called the police after the situation had become unsustainable. The National Police arrived and found the accused yelling homophobic insults from a balcony of his house. He was in a highly agitated state and continued to

by Simon Russell

shout insults and threats even when confronted by police. The victims said that he had also cut their internet connection, with there being

no reason for any of the man’s actions other than their sexual orientation. A local court ordered the accused to go no nearer than 500 metres to his victims while charges are drawn up.

Lower Increase PASSENGER numbers at Alicante-Elche airport showed one of their lowest monthly rises for some time, with a rise of just under one percent in June, compared to figures a year ago. One point four million people used the facility at El Altet last month, meaning that some six point four million passengers have gone through the doors

by Alex Trelinski

during the first six months of 2018, which is a two percent rise on the same period in 2017. Analysts say that the reduced rise is down to routes run by the nowdefunct Monarch airlines not being replaced by other carriers, in addition to lower holiday prices being offered

by other destinations like Turkey. They added that there has to come a logical point where the non-stop big rises in passenger numbers has to slow down or even stop, after years of successive growth. Domestic passenger numbers however did show a rise of nearly 12 percent between January and July this year.

Rellue forest fire stabilised Firefighters from units in eight neighbouring municipalites were drafted in to control a fire that destroyed more than 20 hectares of woodland close to the town of Rellue earlier this week. The blaze took hold overnight on Tuesday, forcing the intervention of eight forestry units from

Alicante and Valencia plus fire tenders from Benidorm, Ibi, San Vicente and Villena. A helicopter was also scrambled, but could not be deployed during the hours of darkness. A spokesperson for the fire consortium, speaking to Spanish press said, “Normally the air units are deployed first to pave the

way for the terrestrial units”. The cause of the fire, which broke out in the El Mas de la Garrofera forestry area is unknown, however, temperature, wind and humidity are key factors during the extinction process, carried out by fire officers who remained on site to prevent further outbreaks.

FRIDAY 20TH JULY 2018

Teenager Tango in the dark chained to window by Simon Russell

A mother’s drastic measures to imprison her “out of control” daughter could instead lead to prison for her as she went to trial in Castellon this week. The court heard how she chained the 15-yearold to the bars of a window in their house so that she could not leave without permission. The incident happened in September last year and the girl remained confined until she was able to reach a mobile phone. She called the emergency services and a fire crew came to free her while her mother was arrested. The mother has said she was “overwhelmed” by her daughter’s behaviour allegedly including theft, staying out for the night and truant, leading her to take the actions she did. Prosecutors have asked for a four and a half year prison sentence for the crime of illegal detention.

Death threats for sitting next to partner A woman has been arrested in Valencia for a serious assault and death threats on a woman who sat next to her husband on a bench. The incident occurred in the Transits area of the city this Tuesday, when the accused pounced on the victim from behind. She punched her in the face causing a tooth to be lost and gouged her in the thigh with a key. She also said that she was carrying a knife and if she talked to her husband again she would kill her. The police were called and arrested a 53-year-old woman after interviewing both women and witnesses. The detainee has a criminal record according to police sources.

PLAZA Gabriel Miro will be the outdoor venue for a series of late evening tango and milonga dance workshops this summer. This is the tenth year in a row that the event has been held which as well as the tuition will have exhibitions of the famous tango as well as the milonga, the Argentinian version of the dance. Entrance is free and the first workshop is 20 July and then each Friday until the end of August, running from 8pm to midnight. The events are promoted by the Department of Project Coordination and run by the Spain ABA Tango amateur dance group.

Speeding up the paperwork by Simon Russell

MEMBERS of the Cercle Empresarial de la Marina Alta (Business Circle) have called for the NIE application process for foreigners to be sped up. The process currently takes an average of two months but the vital documentation is needed to complete the sale of Spanish

land or property to any buyers who aren’t Spanish nationals. They made the appeal to a delegation of the National Police who currently oversee the process. During a meeting with staff from the association the police said they recognised the issues, were very predisposed

to finding a solution and hope something can be in place soon. The meeting was attended by the association president Sonja Dietz, representatives from the real estate market and the Chief Inspector of the Denia Police Station, Alejandro Sanchez, among other interested parties.

From market to museum

THE Lonja de Denia, the town’s old fish market, is on track to complete its conversion to a museum by October. Generalitat President Ximo Puig visited the site this week, describing the works as one of the most important across the region at the moment. The

Lonja is the last remaining structure from the old port and stands as an important reminder of Denia’s seafaring origins. When complete the space will be a marine museum and multi-purpose building for one-off events such as exhibitions.

Irish teenager drowns in lake

THE Guardia Civil have confirmed that a 19-yearold who drowned in a lake in Spain last weekend was an Irish national. Joshua Osahon was from Portaloise and had been reported missing from the group he was visiting a rural part of Albacete with. A search was started and a body, now confirmed as that of the young man, was found floating in a lake

by Matthew Richards

in the Lagunas Ruidera National Park. Joshua was in Spain as part of a language programme and the tragedy appeared to have happened during a group day out. His family are making arrangements for his body to be flown back to Ireland as soon as the authorities in Spain have released it.

Not so all inclusive

THE Balearic islands of Ibiza and Mallorca are considering banning unlimited alcohol which are part of all inclusive holiday packages. The proposal is part of an ongoing crackdown against alcohol and drug fuelled behaviour from mainly British tourists, who many feel are driving away other holidaymakers and making life intolerable for locals. Resorts such as Magaluf have already brought in local by-laws concerning behaviour, especially on

by Matthew Richards

the streets and away from pubs and clubs. Under the new proposal all inclusive packages will treat alcohol in the same way as half board deals, where either no free booze is included or just a complementary drink with the meal. The Balearics Director for Tourism, Antoni Sanso, said that prohibiting alcohol is not an option, but strong regulation may solve many of the resorts problems.

FRIDAY 20TH JULY 2018

Holidaymaker’s disappearance sparks search by Simon Russell

THE police in Gata de Gorgos have launched a search for a man on a short stay in the town who has not been seen for several days. The 55-year-old Argentinian is resident in Madrid and travelled south for a holiday. He was last seen in the Passeig d’Alacant area on Saturday (7 July). The man is described as 1.80 metres tall and was wearing sunglasses, white shorts, a white shirt and espadrilles when he was last seen. Members of the public have been asked to keep an eye out and the authority’s say that he may look dishevelled or disoriented. Local Police, The Guardia Civil and volounteers have been searching empty houses, scrubland, wells and so on in an attempt to locate them man.

Cleaning products blamed for death

by Simon Russell

Doctors believe that a woman who died after cleaning her home succumbed to suspected ammonia poisoning, with the substance being present in one of the products she was using for her housework. The incident happened in the San Blas area of Madrid this week when the 30-yearold called 112 after

suddenly feeling ill. The ambulance crew arrived but had to force the door as she was not responding. They found her lying on the floor from a suspected cardiac arrest and tried CPR for a period but declared her dead at the scene. The principal theory is that she died from inhaling ammonia, triggering the cardiac arrest.

THE ORIHUELA COSTA may see its beach bars reopened by the start of August, according to Orihuela council. This followed the news that a challenge over the beach-bar tender process has been thrown out by the central

contractual court. The area has seen no beach bars since early April, following the re-advertising of the franchise amidst legal concerns over the original tender. Previous contractor, Chiringuitos de Sol, is amongst the current clutch of bidders, with beaches councillor

Luisa Boné saying that she hoped a service would be introduced “as soon as possible”. The closure of the bars has sparked a major controversy in the area, with a substantial part of the tourist season already gone, with no refreshment or beach hire facilities available to visitors.

Summer street theatre FOR the third consecutive year Javea will have family street theatre and music in the evenings. The venue is the David Ferrer Paseo (in front of the Las Olas heladaria) from 8.30 until 11.00. From now until 15 July Victor Tor will present “La lada del jugador” and from 16 July to 22 July the Hoy aqui company take over with their show “Avistacielos”. The final act in July is Javimalabres with “A fuego lento”. There is also a full programme of events in August; all performances are free but there will be official collection points if you want to donate a few coins.

Danger dust removed from school THE Department of Education in Oliva is using the summer break to remove fibre cement panels from Luis Vives School. While assured that the panels are currently safe, if they deteriorate or break there is a risk from the silica dust that escapes. This has been associated with silicosis, pulmonary disease and lung cancer among other conditions. Staff working during July have been moved to a different part of the site while the work starts. The bathrooms will also be reformed and perimeter fencing replaced while the pupils are off for the summer.

Lift death mystery POLICE are trying to unravel the death of an unknown man found at the bottom of a hospital lift shaft. The corpse was discovered by maintenance workers on Monday at Madrid’s La Paz Hospital after there had been complaints of the lift having a bad smell and making odd noises. The dead man is said to be 50 to 60 years old and was wearing civilian clothes but may still well be a

by Matthew Richards

hospital worker, either one who was off duty or did not require a uniform for his role. Another clue is that the man had a master key to the lift. They have provisionally ruled out homicide as a cause of death at this time and are working on the basis that the death was either an accident or suicide.

Late night pool party THE women from the Alfas del Pi Mayoralas de la Purisima are holding a fundraising party tomorrow night (21 July) at the municipal pool. The Festa Alfasenca starts at 11 pm and the ticket price of €5 includes your first drink and music by DJ Luis Mico.

The ladies will be running the bar, which will be selling reasonably priced drinks. You can buy your ticket on the door or in advance at the Casa de la Cultura, Bar Lina or the Kasbrane de l’Albir. All proceeds go towards the organisation of the Festival de Inmaculada.

Moors and Christians on La Safor by Simon Russell

OLIVA is one of the few coastal Valencian towns to hold their Moors and Christian’s fiesta over the peak summer months and the main event this year starts on the evening of 19 July. However as a precursor there is a concert this weekend, at La Estacion Paseo on Sunday at 8.30pm. The event proper kicks off at 7pm on 19 July and runs through until 22 July. There are parades, mock battles, plenty of fun for the kids, music and other activities throughout the four days. Consult the Oliva Tourist Board for full details on www. oliva.turismo.com or call 962 855 528 (website and telephone help available in English).

Lambo fraud scheme uncovered

A Dénia businessman has been jailed for an insurance fraud concerning a quarter of a million Lamborghini that he owned. The chain of events started in 2012 after the luxury Lamborghini Murciélago was written off in an accident near Toledo. The vehicle was uninsured but a week after the crash the owner approached a company to insure the car saying it was in “pristine condition.”

Owl rescue POLICE in Gata de Gorgos had an unusual call out after an owl needed rescuing when it was hit by a car. They were alerted by the driver of the car following behind the vehicle that had struck the owl, which had flown into the car. The bird was stunned and looked badly injured but managed to make its way to perch on a bench alongside the road. It was still there when the police arrived but was very aggressive, probably as a result of the shock after being hit. The officers eventually managed to get the owl into a specialist carrying box and took it to the Santa Faz bird recovery centre. They are hoping that the bird will soon be well enough to be allowed back into the wild.

A few months later he told the insurer that the car had been stolen from a street in Dénia, a claim backed up by a Guardia Civil officer. He made a claim for €250,000 but after an investigation, the insurance company had reason to believe the claim was fraudulent. There were also allegations that a member of the Guardia had been involved in the scam.

Unwanted tributes Disgraced royal fights on LAWYERS for the imprisoned and disgraced son-in law of King Felipe have officially asked the Supreme Court to annul his conviction. Inaki Urdangarin is serving a five year and ten month jail sentence for crimes of embezzlement and fraud relating to a charity he headed up along with his wife

by Simon Russell

Cristina, the King’s sister. A letter from Urdangarin to the court says that “there is no logical material basis” for the conviction and the verdict had inconsistencies and contradictions. Legal sources say that this move is almost certainly a precursor to a full appeal.

Access all areas by Simon Russell

AVENIDA Bernat de Sarria will now be open to traffic on market days (Sunday and Wednesday) after having previously been closed to vehicles. Mobility Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate announced the decision, pending final security verifications by

the Local Police. Mr de Zarate said that access would be as normal with two exceptions, which are before 8.30am as the market opens and at lunchtime when the market closes for the day. This is to allow the unloading and loading of traders vehicles.

FOR whatever reason, Calpe probably has more plaques and dedications to jailed politician Eduardo Zaplana than any other similar sized town in Valencia. So far six have been identified and there may still be more in honour of Zaplana, the former Generalitat President now awaiting trial on money laundering and fraud charges. He was known to be friendly with ex-mayor Javier Morato, something that may have explained his many visits to the Marina Alta town. All opposition parties in the town have said that the plaques and dedications should all be removed in a proposal to be discussed in an upcoming plenary meeting. The known plaques carrying Zaplana’s name are in Refugio del Viento, Placa d’Ifach, the old Fish-market lookout spot, La Vallesa Park, the port and the Casa de la Cultura.

Fault causes closures by Simon Russell

MANY stalls in Benidorm’s indoor municipal market were forced to stop trading last week after the cooling system broke down. Any traders selling perishable goods had to remove them and many such as butchers and fishmongers had to close altogether during one of the busiest periods for the market. The problem came to light over the weekend and many stall owners had to throw away produce on Monday which, combined with the loss in trade, was described as “devastating.” Plans are in hand to repair the fault and in the meantime, a portable generator is due to be installed.

Lack of specialist Carnage in child care a concern the Med FOR the second year in a row the Orba Centro de Salud has no paediatrician in attendance during the summer as the doctor takes their annual vacation. The clinic covers 11 towns and villages including Orba with an estimated 1,000 children not having a specialist local care in the area until the doctor returns. The concession that runs the health centre

by Simon Russell

has said that if required there will still be a paediatrician in Pego, but this is over 30 kilometres away from some of the inland Marina Alta towns affected. Social Welfare Councillor Frances Roig said that this is what happens when something as important as health is

put into the hands of a private company. Local families have expressed concern saying crucial areas of a child’s health such as vaccinations, monthly reviews and consultations will all have to be put on hold during the summer while they will need to travel for more urgent issues that require a paediatrician rather than a GP.

The secrets out SPANISH national newspaper ABC has published a list of “secret” coves in Alicante province, an area where many domestic tourists come on holiday to year after year. Calas Raco del Conill and del Charco in Villajoyosa were on the list, del Conill being traditionally a nudist beach while del Charco is said to be ideal for families. Coveta Fuma in El Campello was praised

by Simon Russell

for its transparent waters while Los Baños de Reina, also in El Campello, was praised for its history and rugged aspect. Javea’s Cala Ambolo was noted to have a tricky access but this makes the visit all the more worthwhile and keeps the crowds away, said ABC. Cala Baladrar in Benissa was said to

have the most beautiful sunrise across Valencia while Benitatchell’s Cala Llebeig has a noted floral reserve and crystal-clear waters. Also, to be found in Benitatchell, Cala de los Tiestos is again difficult to access but once there you are greeted with pure waters and incredible beauty. Last on the list is Cala del Frances in Jávea “a little paradise” with wonderful views of the Montgó.

THOUGH exact figures will probably never be known, an estimated 600 people have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean in the last month alone. If accurate this figure is more than the estimated migrant deaths for the previous five months of 2018. The spike in deaths is blamed largely on the new hard-line government in Italy which has refused to allow migrant vessels to dock, a stance also largely adopted by Malta. Spain famously helped about 600 people on board the “Aquarius” migrant ship

by Simon Russell

recently after Italy had refused to take them in defiance of European guidelines. The figures were provided by medical charity Doctors without Borders (MSF) and SOS Mediterranee. They accused some EU politicians of “taking a cold-blooded decision to leave men, women and children to drown.” In turn, new Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini accused groups such as these of aiding human traffickers.

FRIDAY 8TH JUNE 2018

Holiday home owners playing it by the book OVER 11,000 new properties have been registered as holiday rental destinations in the Valencian Community during the first half of the year. The majority of these were in Alicante province, 60% of the total, with Valencia and Castellon provinces accounting for about 20% each. The sharp rise in registrations has been put largely down to a

by Simon Russell

crackdown on illegal rentals. Some holiday home owners are also worried that in the future there may be further restrictions or even a ban on future rentals so want to get their properties legalised now. There are now almost 72,000 homes registered across Valencia with half of these happening in the last three years.

Salty Excursions ORGANISED trips around Torrevieja’s salt works finally became a reality this week, nearly four years after the plans were first announced. A tourist train will leave from Avenida de la Libertad every two hours from 10.00 am through to 8.00 pm, costing 6-95 Euros for adults, and 5-95 Euros for pensioners and children aged between 2 and 12 years. Running until the end of September, the 50 minute tour will tell visitors the history of the salt works, and there’ll

by Simon Russell

be a chance to take photos inside the plant, and to even climb a salt mountain. Delays in launching the muchheralded trips were caused by environmental concerns and bureaucracy, whilst the visitor centre is still not open for business after a series of hold-ups, with toilets yet to be put in, and electrical work not completed.

A few spoiling it for many

THREATS to restrict or even ban access to the Covas Tallada have been ramped up after the season has started with various abuses of the fragile site. These include a group of people camping in the caves, something which is strictly banned. Floods of visitors continue to enter the caves, including a guided group of 100 children, something described as “irresponsible” by Joan Sala, President of the

by Simon Russell

Montgo Board which is responsible for Covas Tallada. Another photo showed a group of about 20 kayaks parked up in the cave as their owners tramped all over the delicate rocks. The final straw could be the recent appearance of graffiti, again showing the insensitivity of many visitors. Mr Sala said that “to protect an

environmental treasure such as this there may be no choice but to close the Cova.” There had been talks earlier this year of restricting visitors to around 70 a day using a quota system. However as it is too late to introduce this measure in time for the summer a total ban may be the only solution. There are no staff at the remote site to prevent abuses, and the Montgo Board does not have the budget to provide any.

Double dose of Public right of way barred assault

POLICE in the Alicante town of Elda arrested two men on the same day on unrelated sexual assault charges. In the first instance an 18-year-old youth had grabbed a girl of just 14 from behind and made obscene gestures and comments before running off. In the second case a man of 33 is accused of attacking a waitress who was cleaning the bathroom

in the establishment where she worked. He had tried to sexually assault her but the woman fought back and screamed and he ran off. From descriptions given both men were soon tracked down by police; they were arrested last weekend and have been charged with sexual assault.

British link to marijuana farm

A British registered luxury car was used to blend in to an area popular with ex-pats by two men who were growing marijuana on a large scale. The drug was being cultivated in the Pego area by two Polish nationals whose operation first came to the attention of the police after neighbours complained of the strong odour coming from their house. They ran a surveillance operation for several weeks and were able to identify the two tenants and the suspiciously

high level of security at the property. After gathering sufficient evidence to raid the property they found 400 drying plants and 700 grams of buds ready for sale. There were so many plants in the house that they were in every room, including the living room and bedrooms. The pair, Polish nationals aged 29 and 30, have been remanded without bail as they are considered a high flight risk due to their lack of Spanish ties.

A hiking and ecological group were astonished when they tried to walk a well-known route near Calpe to find that it had been fenced off. Members of the Association Cultural Ecologista (ACEC) had planned the walk through the Casanova in the Terrasala area when they found a gate across the road and signs warning that the path was not accessible

for the public. It appears that the land behind the gate has been effectively claimed by the private owner of a nearby large villa who also owns much of the surrounding land. They have taken a video of the barriers and passed it to Calpe Town Hall for an official explanation of what they call a “gross invasion of public lands”.

Shocking incident

A 50-year-old man suffered first and second degree burns to his arm, face and neck when he was carrying out electrical repairs in Elche. The incident happened on a farm on Calle Islas Canarias this Monday when he received a

severe electric shock. An emergency ambulance was dispatched and he was transferred to the specialist burns unit at Alicante’s General University Hospital. The victim is believed to be a professional worker for an electrical firm.

paseo at Puerto de Alcudia in Mallorca, resulting in flooded restaurants and submerged roads. Similar footage emerged in Minorca, with Citudella, the islands

second town, reporting widespread flooding. Meteorologists say that the phenomenon is known as a meteotsunami, caused by sudden changes in barometric pressure which displaces large

bodies of water resulting in a freak wave. Spain’s meteorological agency has issued alerts about the continued likelihood of the meteotsunamis recurring in the Balearics due to current weather conditions.

Plans are being drawn up to issue millions of permits so visiting Britons can drive on Spanish and EU roads after Brexit. Up to seven million International Driving Permits could be needed inside a year if the UK and the EU do not agree to mutually recognise licences, the National Audit Office (NAO) says. The public spending watchdog warned that “detailed delivery plans” had not yet been completed. But the government told it the project was

“deliverable” The NAO report looks at how the Department for Transport is preparing for the UK’s departure from the EU in March 2019. Currently, UK driving licences are valid in all EU countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. But unless a specific agreement is reached, UK drivers will need “additional documentation” in Europe after Brexit, the report says. The government’s preparations for this

scenario include ratifying a 1968 road traffic convention so International Driving Permits are recognised. About 100,000 of these documents - which cost £5.50 and take about five minutes to apply for - are currently issued each year, and they are recommended or required in more than 140 countries worldwide. This could increase to seven million permits being issued by 4,500 Post Offices in the first year of Brexit unless a deal is agreed, the NAO report says.

Investment Fraud Spikes as Savers LOSE £51m to Scams: City of London Police Living in Spain it is very annoying when savers/investors lose money via a scam, via a fund going into administration or by mismanagement, and people or newspaper articles preach that in the

UK this would never happen as they have the FCA etc to protect people. Frighteningly this is so untrue. Savers/investors are just as vulnerable in the UK as elsewhere and recent figures published by the

City of London Police show that savers/investors have been scammed out of over £51 million by investment fraudsters between April and June this year alone. The figures show a 70% spike in investment fraud reported to the authorities when comparing the numbers from the same months in 2017, when fraud accounted for £30m. “Every year thousands of people fall victim to investment scammers, with pensions – usually the most significant financial asset someone will have available to them – often the target,” Tom Selby, Senior Analyst at AJ Bell, said in a statement. Pension scams can have devastating consequences and cold calling is the most common method used to initiate pension scams. As the chart shows, a staggering £166 million in investment fraud losses were reported in 2017/18, with the average fraud victim aged 57. In today’s environment of growing inflation and low savings rates people are more vulnerable to being tempted by fraudsters/scammers than ever before.

But stop, think, be realistic in your goals, don’t be tempted by greed, adverts that promise the world like low fees, great returns and a different approach, it’s just not possible. Now is the time people need to wake up and realise you get nothing for free in this life and that includes above average returns on savings and investments. Sadly if something sounds too good to be true IT IS. You need to take great care with regards to your personal wealth and wellbeing. Clients would be well advised to stick to Regulated ‘Retail’ funds – i.e. UCITS 5 and/or well known and regulated DFM providers. By getting good advice from an experienced wealth manager who takes time to understand you and your needs, you can find an investment that has the potential to match your expectations (barring another market correction, but even those are usually short lived). Dogs can catch the flu? What dog parents need to know

PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES Seven puppies, 2 boys and 5 girls, have been found and are in the care of ARC. They are approximately 7 to 8 weeks old. They have all been wormed, treated for fleas, and had their 1st injections. All gorgeous playful little guys with their own personalities.

MOOEY

He is now 9 months old. He was found when he was 6 weeks old in a suitcase, together with 6 brothers and sisters and his mum. They had been dumped by the basura bins. Mooey is the last of the litter and really needs his own forever home. He is very playful and loves attention. He has a sweet nature, is gentle and will make a lovely pet. Also, many other dogs, cats & kittens needing homes. No adoption fee but a donation is always appreciated.

(BPT) - Did you know that humans are not the only ones who can catch the flu? Unfortunately for man’s best friend, dogs are also susceptible to their own version of it. Dog flu is a year-round illness that can easily spread from dog to dog, but isn’t contagious to humans. Spring is a great time for pet parents to talk to their veterinarians about vaccinating their dogs against dog flu, either for the first time or for revaccination,

Food and donations also urgently needed and can be left at ARC’s charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1, Jalon between 10 am & 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday. “Dog flu is highly contagious and we’ve seen thousands of cases being reported over the last year,” says Kathryn Primm, DVM, co-author of the Pet Parent’s Guide to Infectious Disease of Dogs. “The good news is that it’s also vaccine

preventable. Dogs can be protected against both strains of dog flu with a single vaccine.” To help pet parents across the country, here are answers to some common questions pet parents have about dog flu. What exactly is dog flu? There are two strains of the canine influenza virus - H3N2 and H3N8. H3N2 is relatively new and is responsible for most of the recent cases. Common symptoms of dog flu include high fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose and, in some cases, pneumonia - which can be life-threatening. How do dogs get dog flu? Dog flu is highly contagious and can pass between dogs through virus particles in the air, physical contact with other dogs, indirect contact with an infected dog or contact with a person who has interacted with an infected dog. Since dogs have no natural immunity against dog flu, almost all unvaccinated dogs that come in contact with the virus will become sick. Are certain groups of dogs more susceptible to dog flu? Pups that travel with their families or are frequently in contact with other dogs at places like dog parks, doggie daycare, grooming facilities and boarding kennels are at increased risk and should be vaccinated against both strains of dog flu. Why should I get my dog vaccinated now? Dog flu is not seasonal, it is year-round; but because dogs tend to be more social in the spring in many parts of the country, they are

more likely to encounter a contagious dog. Plus, with summer approaching, dogs that will be boarded should finish the dog flu vaccination at least two weeks before the planned date of boarding. Dogs vaccinated for the first time need two vaccinations, two to four weeks apart. Annual revaccination just requires one vaccination. Can dogs transmit the flu to humans? No. To date, there is no evidence that humans can catch canine influenza virus from dogs. Can I vaccinate my dog against both strains? According to the American Animal Hospital Association, dogs at risk, such as those that are boarded at kennels, attend doggie day care or visit dog parks, should be vaccinated against both strains of dog flu, available in a single vaccine. Dogs should be vaccinated on an annual basis to prevent illness or decrease the severity of symptoms if they do become sick. To find a vet that carries the dog flu vaccination, you can visit dogflu.com and search by your zip code. How long has this vaccine been available? Bivalent vaccines, which are vaccines that contain both strains of dog flu, were introduced to the market in 2016 and 2017. Millions of dogs have been vaccinated against dog flu. Spring weather is exciting for both pet parents and their dogs - it means it’s time to get outside and play. Avoid the risk of dog flu by talking to a veterinarian about vaccination and visiting dogflu.com to find a veterinarian and schedule an appointment for a dog flu vaccination for your pet.

This summers must-have beauty product With the intense summer heat facial mists are a musthave. Within just a couple of seconds, you can instantly feel refreshed. They are also great for giving your skin a hydration boost when you’re out and about. Facial sprays are also easy to create

yourself, with minimal ingredients and preparation time, you can soon make up a homemade facial spray that’s customized to fit your own specific skin type and requirements. We´ve listed some quick tips on how to create your own DIY facial mist below. First, find a suitable bottle, which you will need to store the facial spray in. If you’re able to find one, a glass or aluminium bottle will work well, you might want to look for one with an atomizer nozzle for an extra fine mist. Travel-sized bottles are also good, especially when you are out and about. Make sure your container is properly cleaned and sterilized before you fill it. Next, it’s tea time! Brew some tea. Brewed tea is a great base for your facial mist because it’s packed with natural antioxidants that helps soothe any redness in your skin and protect your skin from free radicals. There is a wide variety of herbal teas available, popular choices for DIY facial mists are, peppermint, green and chamomile. If you can´t decide between the three types of tea, consider what you want to achieve with

your facial spray. Green tea is ideal if you want a mist that can detoxify your skin in a polluted environment. Peppermint tea is great at cooling you down, chamomile will help you relax, perfect towards the end of the day. When you decided what tea to use, steep the tea bag in hot water just as you would if you were making yourself a cuppa, although distilled water would be better for a facial spray if possible. Cool the tea to room temperature before adding in other ingredients, placing it in the refrigerator will probably be needed, especially over the next couple of months. Finally mix in your special ingredients, this is where the fun really starts. Tailor your facial mist to suit you by adding ingredients, such as extracts and oils. If you are looking for a simple hydrating spray, add 2-3 drops of vitamin E or jojoba oil to your tea. For sensitive skin, add in equal parts rosewater to your tea to help soothe and control redness. As an alternative try mixing in skin-loving ingredients like

witch hazel, aloe vera juice or cucumbers that will create a really refreshing facial mist. The ideas above are just a few of the many ingredients you can add, try to mix and match these ingredients and more to create fresh facial mists that will work for you.

This dogged the brand for years and even now there are plenty of people who would rather stick to a Japanese make or something from Volkswagen. That’s a real shame as Alfa Romeo has been working very hard in recent years to improve the quality and durability of its cars. And this hard work is paying off. The perception of Alfa Romeo is slowly changing and cars like

Giulietta have helped immensely. The quality feels reasonably good, although some of the interior plastics and switches aren’t as ‘premium’ as other hatchbacks such as Honda Civic. It’s good on the move though with a comfortably smooth ride, neat steering and good refinement. All models get the DNA system which alters

Mobile clampdown

YOU only have to stand at a set of traffic lights and watch the traffic going by to see how many drivers still ignore the laws on using your mobile phone while driving in Spain. To combat this, new laws may be introduced and existing ones are expected to be tightened up. Pere Navarro, head of the DGT, announced the plans last week, saying driver distractions are now the leading cause of deaths on the Spanish roads, overtaking alcohol and speeding in recent years. Under current rules, drivers lose three points for using their mobile while driving. Mr Navarro said that the DGT plans to take away more points for repeat

offenders in particular while reducing penalties for lesser infractions. Those offenders who agree to attend refresher driving courses can also regain more lost points, increasing from the current

four to eight. Navarro said that this is part of a general overhaul of the system which will also include actions concerning the death rates on secondary roads and also amongst motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, all high by European standards.

the throttle response, the steering and traction control. There’s a good choice of engines too with Alfa’s excellent 1.4-litre TB MultiAir engine and the strong JTDM-2 diesels. The top version is the performance Cloverleaf model - Alfa’s version of a GTI. It uses the new 1750 TBi petrol engine that made its debut in the 159 and boasts an impressive 235PS and a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds. Sadly, while it looks great, it’s pretty underwhelming

to drive which makes its price tag of more than £23,000 seem even more over the top. Cars from April 2016 benefitted from a light facelift to bring the styling into line with the larger Giulia saloon and every car now gets Alfa Romeo’s Uconnect system. It’s a fiveinch touchscreen display that takes care of onboard entertainment and Bluetooth connectivity. It’s easy to use and benefits from large, clear graphics. The line-up has been cleared-out, too, and now starts with plain Giulietta and rises through Super, Tecnica and Speciale to Veloce trims, the last of which being exclusive to the 1750 TB formerly known as the Quadrifoglio Verde.

Zola’s return

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

ANTHONY JOSHUA will defend his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles against Alexander Povetkin at Wembley on September 22nd and has taken a swipe at his opponent’s drug taking. Russia’s Povetkin is the mandatory challenger to his WBA title, and by fighting him Joshua should secure greater freedom in selecting his next opponent. The 28-year-old Briton had been in training while negotiations with WBC champion Deontay Wilder stalled, but could yet fight the American in April 2019. “I can’t wait to get back in the ring, the end of March feels a long time ago now,” said Joshua. The Brit has also pledged to stop boxing if he ever fails a doping test – and says he would rather lose a fight than take banned performance enhancing drugs.

by Alex Trelinski

His comments came after a news conference with Povetkin, who has twice been banned for taking the prohibited substances

meldonium and ostarine. “I would rather take a loss than be done for doping, because that is worse for your legacy than taking a loss,” Joshua said. “Weigh it up. Dope, be

Top dosh Lewis World champion Lewis Hamilton will race for Mercedes in Formula 1 for at least a further two seasons in a big personal boost ahead of this Sunday’s GP in Hockenheim. The 33-year-old Briton has signed a new contract with the German manufacturer that lasts until the end of 2020.

by Alex Trelinski

The BBC has reported that Hamilton will earn at least £30m a year, rising to a maximum of £40m, depending on bonuses. Hamilton said a new contact had been “a formality” since he sat down with Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff to begin discussions last winter.

He said: “It’s good to put pen to paper, announce it and then get on with business as usual”. Hamilton is eight points behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in this year’s championship before this weekend’s German Grand Prix, which marks the halfway point of the season. Hamilton added:

banned, legacy damaged – or accept that someone is better than you on the night, give them the respect and bounce back. I would rather stay clean and give it my best every time.” “Although we have enjoyed so much success together since 2013, Mercedes is hungrier than ever.” “The competitive passion that burns bright inside me is shared by every single member of this group always chasing the next improvement and digging even deeper to make sure we come out on top. “I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in the next two and a half seasons.”

EX-CHELSEA favourite Gianfranco Zola is back at Stamford Bridge, this time as assistant to new manager, and fellow Italian, Maurizio Sarri. As a player, Zola helped the club win two FA Cups, one Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup, one Uefa Super Cup and one League Cup between 1996-2003. “For me it is an amazing thing. I am pleased to be here,” said Zola. Zola, who quit as Birmingham City boss in April 2017, has joined Chelsea’s

pre-season tour of Australia, and was photographed en route with Sarri. Sarri, 59, was appointed Blues boss last week after Antonio Conte got the sack despite winning the Premier League title in 2016-17 and FA Cup in 2017-18. “It would be great to be successful with Maurizio and for the club and I will give my best, as I did in the past as a player,” added Zola, 52.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

TWO TEAM SKY colleagues are offering a potential headache for team bosses halfway through the Tour de France, with Geraint Thomas becoming the midweek leader of Le Tour, ahead of defending champion Chris Froome. It’s still comparatively early days yet, but it might prove to be impossible for Team Sky not to let the British duo eventually slog out, irrespective of predetermined tactics before the event started.

by Alex Trelinski

At the moment though, nothing is changing according to Sky’s director Nicolas Portal who said: “Froome is number one. I think everything worked pretty well. When the race ends like this the opportunities open. You are not changing the plan, you are adapting.” Thomas became the Tour de France’s overall leader on Wednesday with an impressive

victory on stage 11. Team Sky rider Thomas attacked with six kilometres left on the final climb up La Rosiere, to finish 20 seconds ahead of teammate Chris Froome, in third, and secondplaced Tom Dumoulin. There has been talk of tension between Thomas and Froome, but after the finish on Wednesday they failed, publicly at least, to materialise. “It’s an amazing position for us,” Froome said. “Geraint’s in the form of his life and fully deserves it.” However, Britain’s Mark Cavendish - who has been unable to add to his 30 stage wins in this year’s edition of the race - is out after finishing outside the stage 11 time limit.
