SPAIN’S ROCKY THREAT SPAIN will vote against the draft Brexit withdrawal agreement at Sunday’s EU summit if the text on Gibraltar is not changed. The EU member nations do not have to approve the withdrawal deal u n a n i m o u s l y, but any final deal(if that happens) needs unanimity, and that’s where the future of the Rock could cause trouble. Spain has been seeking assurances this week over the status of Gibraltar, which has always been a major point of contention in
by Andy Mansell
Anglo-Spanish relations, as Spain has long claimed sovereignty over the territory. Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said that the country would not back the Brexit deal unless it makes it clear that Madrid must specifically agree on the status of Gibraltar. The minister said that Madrid wanted the deal to clarify that talks on future ties between London and the bloc would not apply to Gibraltar. Spain said last week that it welcomed the inclusion of a protocol on Gibraltar in the draft Brexit agreement, but Mr Borrell said that the document introduced “a
certain confusion” on the issue. Meanwhile, in an interview on Tuesday, Borrell predicted that the United Kingdom could split apart because of Brexit, amidst fresh pressures for a second Scottish independence vote. “I am very much more worried about the unity of the United Kingdom than the unity of the Kingdom of Spain. I think the UK will split apart sooner than the kingdom of Spain.” Asked to elaborate, Borrell added: “It is a clear sign of UK weakness.”

The hidden dangers of impressive investment returns
By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial
Over the last 10 years, the financial markets have returned record levels of growth and income to those who have chosen to invest. Clearly this is very positive for those of you in Spain who have pensions and investments, but I also think it could be concealing the hidden dangers that may be lurking in your pension plan or investment portfolio.
The danger here is that whilst those high fees don’t seem to be having a major impact during such healthy markets, if we were to experience a period of consolidation, or even a downturn, those fees would directly cause losses to your investment. Why would you want to risk your life savings or pension for something that is entirely avoidable?
At Chorus, we often write about hidden fees, particularly those related to the underlying investments and there’s a very goodreason for this!
During the course of 2018 Chorus are aiming to help ensure as many of you as possible are in appropriate portfolios. The right advisor can easily correct a poor portfolio and you could see savings of 1-2% per year overnight by moving to funds from trusted institutions, that benefit from more stringent regulation, longer track records and transparent fees.
I cannot tell you how many portfolio’s I have reviewed in the last year that had hidden fees. In fact, from memory only one portfolio didn’t and that was from a client who had his investments set up from a UK adviser (as we’ve previously wrote, fund mean you are in a good portfolio, paying commission are illegal in the just because your plan has made you money. In many portfolios I’ve seen, UK). the gross returns may be as high as When the entire market is making 8-10% per annum, but due to hidden good returns, it doesn’t necessarily fees, the client is only seeing 4-6% increase on their statements. To return
8-10% gross each year you will have to be taking a certain degree of risk with your hard-earned money, and it is entirely unacceptable that you are seeing so little of the benefit for that risk.
If you’re in a current plan you may have concerns about, or are considering a new investment, you can rely on Chorus to give you honest advice.Drop me an email t.storer@chorusfinancial. es or call me on 693 107 044

Come on out!
GUARDIA CIVIL officers stormed a Torrevieja property last week to arrest a dangerous Belgian fugitive, wanted back home for over 20 violent robberies. News of the three-month operation was only revealed this week, when Belgian authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant, allowing the Guardia to detain the 34-year-old man. The fugitive was also wanted in connection with other crimes like selling weapons and drug trafficking and had fled to Spain by using his brother’s identity. He settled on Torrevieja as his hide-out and used three different addresses in the city to try to confuse anybody that might be tracking him. The Guardia Civil, acting on information from Belgian
by Alex Trelinski
authorities, found out that he was staying at multiple locations, and used up to 30 officers a day for the surveillance work, as well having strength in numbers in case events took a violent turn. As soon as the Belgian warrant was received last week, the Guardia marched straight into where the man was staying at the time, and took him to court in Torrevieja, ahead of the commencement of extradition proceedings. A variety of items were seized from three buildings, including cash, credit cards, and electronic equipment, which are said to be involved with the crimes committed in Belgium.

He was wanted by courts in Castellón, Dénia and Torrent, and his ruses were rumbled by the Guardia from Jávea, who suspecting him of using bogus names back in June when hiring cars and opening bank accounts. The man left an extensive trail of fake identities, up to six at a time, and though identifying himself as being Slovakian, officers confirmed with Polish counterparts that he did indeed come from Poland.

Guardia agents travelled down to San Fulgencio to arrest him, and they put him in front of a judge in Dénia, who remanded him

No laughing matter at the fancy dress
While the biggest fancy dress party in Europe was in full swing last week, Benidorm Police swooped to arrest a British woman selling laughing gas to party goers. The incident took place around 18.00h, on the busy Calle Gerona thoroughfare, when officers from the resorts local police, observed the twenty-eightyear-old, acting suspiciously, approaching passers-by. After watching the woman carefully, they concluded that she was making a ‘drug pass’ to people walking past. When they approached her, they saw that she was actually peddling capsules of nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, which when inhaled can be dangerous to users. The officers arrested the British woman on crimes against public health
by Andy Mansell
and seized the remainder of the capsules in her possession, plus around 400€ in cash. Three days earlier, agents from the local police had arrested the Pakistani owner of a 24-hour convenience store, in the same zone, known as the ‘English Square’ for its popularity with British tourists, on charges of drug trafficking. According to reports in the Spanish press, they were following
up on several complaints from neighbours that the store owner had, “sold alcohol outside the permitted hours (22.00 hours) and that he could be selling narcotics.” Agents from the CIEP and the GRP units, together with the canine unit, carried out a coordinated operation to inspect the premises at around midnight. During the raid, sniffer dogs identified a grey metal drinks can, which smelled strongly. When inspecting the item, the officers uncovered a “false
bottom” to the can, which contained two separate bags. One bag contained a further thirteen transparent plastic bags, with around 21 kilos of what appeared to be marijuana. The other, contained 37, separate black plastic bags with a white substance, apparently, cocaine, with a total of 19 grams. After the discovery, the agents identified the owner of the premises, who they subsequently arrested for a suspected crime of drug trafficking.

VALENCIA is set to be the first region in Spain to set strict controls on cremations, now the most common way for people to say goodbye to their friends and family in the country. There had been much discussion about prohibiting the cremation of obese cadavers due to the harmful emissions and the logistics for standard crematories (the furnace used during the process). Although this was in the Generalitat’s initial draft this proposal has now been dropped. The new paper lists prohibited substances to be in the coffin including clothes or beads that have any metallic elements or plastics. Shrouds should
by Simon Russell
be made of biodegradable material and coffins themselves should not have resins, plastics or metal. The bodies of people who have received cancer treatment involving the insertion of radioactive needles cannot be cremated due to the toxicity from the process. There are also proposals for new crematoriums including their location (at least 200 metres from urbanised areas) and they must now be built on industrial grade soil away from any water tables. Chimneys must be able to prove their emissions are safe and not dispersing into any local populations.

Puppy rescued from ravine crash Firefighters following up a report of a car lying at the foot of a deep ravine, close to Callosa d’en Sarria last Friday, were left mystified and a little puzzled on locating the vehicle. A helicopter and three fire tenders were dispatched to the scene, between KM50 and KM51 on the CV715, but when the firemen clambered down the steep bank to the crashed vehicle, there were no apparent occupants.
by Andy Mansell
The only sign of life close to the vehicle was a tiny, howling puppy, cold and bedraggled. Although suspecting that the puppy was in the car when it left the road above, the fire officers had no option but to place it into the care of an animal protection unit, as no owner appeared to be present. Fortunately, there was a happy ending to the story,
as a few hours later a young man alerted local police and Guardia Civil officers to the incident, explaining that the car he was driving had left the road, with no other vehicle involved. He also confirmed that he was unharmed himself and that the puppy was accompanying him inside the vehicle. He made the decision to leave the puppy safe in the car, whilst he went to alert the authorities to the accident.

Triple tragedy after fire THREE young people died after a fire tore through an apartment building in the northern Valencia town of Utiel last week. The fire broke out at about 6pm on Thursday in the ground floor apartment where the three were located. A 26 year old and 35 year old man died at the scene. A

woman aged 28 was taken to Valencia’s La Fe Hospital but died overnight after suffering terrible injuries. An investigation has been opened although initial indicators are that a wood stove appeared to be the cause of the fire starting.
Toddler death under investigation A clinical investigation has been opened into the death of a two year old girl in a Valencian hospital last week, the authorities have confirmed. The child was taken to the Vinaros Hospital suffering from gastroenteritis or stomach flu, a condition that causes vomiting and diarrhoea but is very rarely fatal. Her situation quickly deteriorated and the toddler slipped into a coma and was
by Simon Russell
transferred to the General University Hospital in Castellon city where she later died. There are fears that the case may be one of medical malpractice relating to an error in dosages, and experts have been called to give testimony. The Vinaros Hospital have said that they are co-operating fully with the investigation which is on hold pending an autopsy.

Anti-Franco feminists
SCUFFLES between rival groups broke out at a rally in Madrid on Sunday marking the anniversary of dictator General Franco’s death. National Police officers on horseback and on foot quickly moved to keep an angry crowd of about 200 away from three topless members of the feminist group Femen who ran into the gathering. The women had the words “Legal fascism, national shame” painted on

their torsos. Police escorted the three activists away while Franco supporters shouted insults and “Franco! Franco! Franco!” The rally is held annually on the Sunday falling closest to November 20th, the date Franco died in 1975. The general ruled Spain for 36 years after leading a military uprising that started the Spanish Civil War. Spain’s Socialist-
led government plans to exhume Franco’s remains from the Valley of the Fallen, a mausoleum northwest of Madrid he ordered built as a memorial to the 1936-39 war. About 34,000 people from both sides of the fighting are buried at the site, most of whose bodies have never been identified. The decision has infuriated some people nostalgic for the years of the Franco dictatorship.

Fire-fighters treated after hotel blaze
OVER 50 fire-fighters and local police were called out to a hotel fire in Alicante last week. The blaze broke out on the eleventh floor of the Eurostars Lucentum on Avenida de Alfonso X on Thursday evening. Their first action was to evacuate the 200 staff and guests who were in the hotel at the time. The teams then had the job of keeping the fire at bay

while scouring the building to ensure that no-one was still inside. Billowing smoke made the job more difficult than ever with visibility from the ninth floor and up being very poor. However the blaze was said to be under control by about midnight with four fire officers requiring medical

attention for smoke inhalation and heat stroke. It is unclear why the fire started, which broke out on the same floor as the spa and gym. Mayor Luis Barcala attended the scene and later praised the heroism and hard work of all emergency service personnel involved. The hotel building has been closed from the ninth floor and upwards for the time being.

Jewel heist suspects arrested
A six-month investigation has led to the arrest of 11 people suspected of being involved in stealing €160,000 worth of cash and jewels in Elche earlier this year. They entered the jewellers, threatening to kill the saleswoman and tying her up in a locked room before making off with the proceeds. The Judicial Police and a forensics team have been working on the case, and undisclosed forensic evidence at the crime scene led to the first arrests in July.

This soon led them to the other suspects, including one who had fled to Portugal. Jewellery worth about €80,000 has been recovered from the house of one of the suspects, although it is known that some valuables had been dismantled or melted down All those detained are Spanish nationals, aged between 32 and 50; they have been charged with robbery with violence and illegal detention.

SPAIN is planning to switch over all electricity production to renewable energy sources by the year 2050, according to the government. The target has been published as a part of a bill to deal with climate change, with a target to hit 70 per cent of electricity generation from renewable energy sources within 12 years. To help reach the proposed figures the government would promote the installation of at least three gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity annually between 2020 to 2030.
10 POLICE in Denia are treating an attack on two North African minors as a xenophobic hate crime after they were attacked by a gang of about 15 men. The attack happened in the Les Marinas area last Thursday and the attackers wore scarves over their faces and caps to disguise their identity. The large group approached the victims who ran off but were caught and then beaten. A local resident called the authorities and while the boys had to be treated in hospital for cuts, bruises and an eye injury they were able to be released the same day. Hook up ends in beating A man who used a “hook-up” app to meet two men in Valencia was assaulted and robbed, suffering serious head injuries. These apps are used explicitly
for arranging sexual encounters, but when the man opened his door he was surprised to see three men rather than two. Unwisely he let them in anyway, but the assault
then started leaving him with head wounds and other injuries. The attackers stole his mobile phone and a computer, leaving him bleeding on the floor
although he managed to contact the authorities. The National Police are investigating the case and say they have two leads to pursue, the description given by the victim and
the digital footprint left by them using the app. They are also keen to find out if this is the first such incident in the area as cases such as this are not always reported to the police.

No Las Vegas here please by Simon Russell
VALENCIA’S governing body is bringing in restrictions on gambling establishments across the region to avoid areas being turned into a form of “mini Las Vegas”. The premises will need to be spaced out and sports cafés cannot be within 700 metres of each other. Bingo halls have to be at least 1,200 metres apart and full-blown casinos cannot be opened within four kilometres of each other. The moves are to ensure that there are not parts of municipalities that appear to be dedicated to gambling and may encourage youngsters. The new measures do not apply to existing premises, only new applications for gambling licences. Other measures in the new bill include restrictions on the number of fruit machines in hotels, again due to the presence of minors.

eviction notice they had been served. The incident happened at a municipally owned property in the Nou Alacant district
last week. The police initially requested entry, along with a social worker, to try and discuss alternative housing for a family squatting there. However the visit gave them a reason to believe that the house was being used for the consumption and sale of drugs. A plain clothes officer returned to the property later the same day and was asked for a password. Earlier surveillance had overheard this and the officer was able to gain entry. Once inside he identified himself as a police officer and the occupants then barred themselves behind an iron door. He called for back-up and eventually, the people handed themselves in. However, they had heard flushing and the police assume this was to get rid of illegal substances. In the end, 17 people were arrested although a number claim they were only on the premises to consume drugs and were not involved in their sale.

DIABETES sufferers will be able to get ‘flash’ glucose measuring equipment on the Spanish health system, as part of a new package of state health funding. Breast implants for women who have undergone mastectomies because of cancer,

will also be funded , according to health minister María Luisa Carcedo. Extra services to be paid for by the state will also include facial restoration following scarring or disfigurement; eye ‘readers’ for those with serious motor-neuro disorders; and replacement parts for hearing equipment such as coclear implants. Smear tests will become routine and automatic for women
in the same way as mammograms, and the age range to get money for hearing aids will be extended. All these extensions of free service are ‘extremely important for those affected’, Sra Carcedo says. “This announcement will help to allow them to lead a more normal life without having to make prohibitive payments,” she added. Most of the extra services will be fully covered within prescriptions.

linked to grisly murder
POLICE are gradually piecing together clues to a grisly and bizarre criminal case that started with the discovery of a woman’s dismembered body in a suitcase. This was found in August by fire-fighters attending a small blaze in a warehouse in Madrid. The source of the flames was a case which contained a hacked up body and had been deliberately set on fire to hide the evidence. The head, hands, feet and breasts had been cut off and caustic soda also used on the remains as well as a fire accelerant, probably petrol. Despite efforts to hide the identity, it was eventually identified as Heidi Paz Bulnes, a 25-yearold Honduran who was the girlfriend of a man called Cesar Viruete, 45, who styled himself “King of the Cachopo”. Cachopo is a popular regional dish made with veal, ham and cheese and Viruete had opened a number of restaurants across Spain selling the posh snack.
pest charged
Photo: Suspect Cesar Viruete and his murdered partner, Heidi Bulnes by Simon Russell
However he enjoyed the lifestyle his success brought him a bit too much, and he began racking up debts. In one instance he gave a cheque for €70,000 to a hotel consortium which bounced and it is believed that Viruete has made the number of enemies with
similar incidents. Police wanted to question him about the violent death of his partner of just four months but Viruete himself had not been seen since the 30th of July. Investigators began to become concerned that he may himself be a victim. However this week he was spotted and later arrested in Zaragoza after changing his
name and appearance than working as a chef. In another grisly twist the police have revealed why the dead woman’s breasts were cut off; she had silicone implants that could have led to her identity through their serial number. This also leads them to speculate that she was killed by someone who knew her.
A man has been arrested in Elche and charged with crimes relating to fooling a woman into having “cybersex” with him. Police believe the 42-year-old set up a false profile on a social network, including a photo downloaded from the internet. He then fooled a woman into sending him sexually explicit material of herself by pretending to be an
by Matthew Richards
acquaintance of hers. After the woman had suspicions about her online suitor police started tracking him digitally, eventually tracing him to his workplace where he had been using their Wi-Fi network to pursue the virtual relationship. He has been charged with crimes against privacy and identity theft.

Ford Cities future still unclear
Christmas coming early
Photo: Workers at Ford´s Almussafes plant - Ford City THE future of the 7,000 workers at Ford’s Almussafes plant - Ford City as it is known locally - still hangs in the balance after the US car giant posted a big loss across Europe. Their third-quarter results showed them to be 245 million dollars in the red, further bringing into question

Ford’s European future. A trade union spokesman said that the company was “well placed” but things would become clearer after a meeting planned for January in Cologne. Ford management said
DRAFT DEAL DONE
The EU and UK have agreed on a draft agreement on their future relationship, paving the way for a Brexit deal to be finalised this weekend. The political declaration - outlining how trade, security and other issues will work - has been “agreed in principle”, the European Council says. London and Brussels have already agreed on the draft terms of the UK’s exit from the EU on 29 March 2019. European Council President Donald Tusk said in a tweet: “I have just sent to EU27 a draft Political Declaration on the Future Relationship between EU and UK. The Commission President has informed me that it has been agreed at negotiators’ level and agreed in principle at the political level,
it will be “making a new commitment to its European business with major reorganisation and change”. Workers at the Almussafes plant continue to have concerns amid shutdowns planned this year as sales of the Kuga, which is manufactured there, remains slow.

Black Friday and it’s accompanying bargains seems to be the main reason behind this, with many ordinary people struggling to meet ends meet. As you may have

noticed this year the trend also means that shops have got into the Christmas spirit earlier than usual, with traditional foods and gifts now lining shelves. Black Friday is the last Friday of the month and a third of Spanish said they planned to do most of their shopping in November.
30% said they would do it in December and the rest would leave it until January - with festive present giving still falling mainly on the Three Kings Day rather than 25 December. The average spend in a Spanish household this year is expected to be €600, which includes the food, drink and entertainment budget as well as gifts.

subject to the endorsement of the leaders.” Under the terms of the draft withdrawal agreement, there will be a 21-month transition period after the UK leaves lasting to the end of 2020. The future relations document sets out the basis for economic, security and defence cooperation from the start of 2021 onwards. The UK has said it hopes to agree a trade deal by then although most observers believe it will take much longer, based on other trade agreements. If the withdrawal agreement and the political declaration are signed off at an EU summit on Sunday, the prime minister will then turn her attention to getting the deal through the UK Parliament, where there is not thought to currently be a majority in favour of it.

Greed, Fraud and
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Losing Your Money Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street.” Courtesy of 20th Century Fox:
By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management
“The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed — for lack of a better word — is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms – greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge – has marked the upward surge of mankind” Gordon Gekko, Wall Street (1987)
The financial definition of greed is the intense, perhaps inordinate, desire for wealth. WordNet a project at Princetown University defines greed as “an excessive desire to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves.” Over the last 30 years, the media has done much to promote the idea that the essential qualities of the free market system are to promote greed and give unscrupulous businessmen a vehicle to line their pockets at the expense of others. We all saw what damage greed can do on a global scale with the US subprime mortgage crisis which led to the 2007/2008 financial crisis , a crisis that the Western world is only now starting to recover from. But greed can affect us all, especially where finance/investing is concerned, experienced con artists regularly defraud 1,000´s of people a year, they know in times of low interest rates savers and investors are looking for a product that offers a better rate of return. Usually they will tempt you with something that is offering growth rates higher than you could achieve anywhere else, often they will say that there is no risk or use terms like Capital Guaranteed. With most of these schemes they reel you in slowly, initially you get good service, good returns, payments are made on time but then as time progresses things change and the payments stop. Most people hope this is just an oversight and based on empty promises believe that their money will be returned eventually. The truth is usually it isn’t, you have been a victim of financial fraud. In most cases people lose all or a substantial amount of the money they invested. Please don’t become a victim, if
something seems to be good to be true, especially where investments are concerned it usually is. Stop, don’t let greed get the better of you, be realistic, a decent return on your money year on year is better than losing it all in the pursuit of the unattainable. Damaging blow for London’s Latin quarter gets reprieve Crown Prince
Photo: Crown Prince Mohammed and President Trump in happier times
DESPITE attempts by many world leaders to spin a narrative that exonerates Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from blame in the murder of journalist Jamal Khasoggi, the CIA has concluded that the Saudi leader was probably behind the killing. President Trump has gone on record as saying that rogue agents (or actors as Mr Trump described them in his own unique fashion) were behind the gruesome murder, a convenient spin
the Saudi’s themselves jumped on after initially denying any involvement whatsoever. However, the leaked CIA report found that such a hands-on leader as Prince Mohammed was extremely unlikely to be unaware of an operation involving over 20 key Saudi operatives as well as members of the Turkish consulate staff. As usual, the financial ties with Saudi Arabia and the west seem to give them much
more leeway than, for example, Iran and Iraq. President Trump is alleged to have personal financial ties to the oil-rich Gulf state as well as overseeing the multi-billion pound arms deals that the US wants to keep alive. The compromise may well end up being a regime change in Saudi Arabia, although finding anyone in the Saudi royal family untainted by this latest scandal may prove tricky to say the least.
THERE is a corner of London that has a distinctly Hispanic feel to it, one aimed not at tourists and the capitals hipsters but the first, second and third generation Latinos that live there. The Pueblito Paisa market in Tottenham has 70 stores owned and run by expatriates and their children from Spain and South America but has been under threat from developers, like so much of London where even a
parking spot in the right place can fetch well into six figures. The building containing the market was brought more than a decade ago by a developer eyeing up the valuable chunk of real estate to turn into flats - or apartments depending how much you pay for them it would seem. An unlikely combination of Boris Johnson and Labour-run Haringey Council have saved the market and
arranged a move to a nearby building with the first three months rent free while the development goes ahead. They will then have the option of moving back to the ground floor of the old building once the development has finished. Not quite David vs Goliath but a nice result in a city that is increasingly losing it’s heart and soul as ever wealthier people move in, forcing out the working and middle classes.

Fiestas boost for Benidorm hotels
Following a Summer season which saw tourist numbers drop dramatically, Benidorm hotel bosses received a major boost this week with record occupancy figures recorded during the recent November fiestas. Worried tourism chiefs in the resort have become aware of the challenges presented by the re-emergence of destinations in countries such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, which offer a similar holiday experience to Benidorm at significantly cheaper prices. In fact, a delegation representing businesses from the Costa Blanca’s major holiday resort recently visited Antalya in Turkey to view at first hand, the attractions these destinations offer

coincidence as his members have worked hard to make the annual November Fiestas Patronales a major draw for tourists. “Nobody thinks they are the result of chance or circumstance”, said the president, “the sector works and invests a lot to achieve these results”. He also stressed the importance of the British run fancy dress day, which follows the last day of the traditional fiestas and is recognised as the largest of its kind in Europe“We must work to have a modern, safe, fun and with that chic spirit we have seen, for example, in the Fancy Dress day.” Said Mayor.

Disabled group Addressing The visiting lighthouse abuse Postbag
All this scare talk about what would happen to British people living in Spain after Brexit just doesn’t seem to square up with the facts. I went to a very informative meeting with the British Consul in Playa Flamenca last week, which was packed to the rafters. She said that assuming a deal was done, you just need to make sure that you have a residencia and a padron, and you will be OK to continue as normal. Presumably, the people that are worrying are those that are living here “under the radar” without the proper documentation. Karen Hughes, Punta Prima.
THIS Saturday a disabled group are making the journey to the Albir Lighthouse, an event organised by the Mascarat Association. The adapted hiking route will cater for people with differing levels of disability, from the wheelchair bound to those who walk with difficulty. The paved route has been specially chosen and a group walked along it recently to ensure that it is suitable on the day while still

offering stunning views. The day starts at 10 am in l’Alfas del Pi where police have set aside a parking area for adapted vehicles. Those taking part are advised to wear suitable clothing and take a snack as well as plenty of water plus something for lunch. The event will be postponed if the weather is judged to be unsuitable.

School run chaos
THE opening of the new Lady Elisabeth secondary school at the Cumbre del Sol urbanization has caused traffic problems during the school run, something that heads of the school and Benitatxell councillors have been discussing this week. Traffic has been backed up on some of the smaller rural roads and other areas blamed on the new influx of vehicles since the centre opened it’s doors this term. Mayor Miguel Angel Garcia was at the meeting and it was agreed that the construction of a roundabout would help ease the problem. The proposal has been passed to Alicante’s Transport Department for consideration.
I went to Benidorm from Finestrat on the bus to see the Parade of Floats, and hopefully the fireworks display, depending on the start time and the fact the last bus was at 10.30 pm, which I had to catch. Just before 9.30, I started to make my way to the bus stop thinking I was going to miss the fireworks but as I waited for the number three bus, I managed to catch them. There were a lot mainly elderly people waiting but no bus arrived, with a policeman telling us that buses were only going to Altea and not the other way to Finestrat!. This change in schedule was not publicised anywhere, and it seemed wrong that the mayor did not lay on late buses for such an event that he was keen to get people to visit. Public transport is essential, and I reluctantly had to pay 15 euros for a taxi which spoilt the evening. Philip Guthrie, Finestrat. EDITOR:- Our understanding is that there is no obligation on behalf of Benidorm to provide “out of municipality” buses as the event is first and foremost a Benidorm event for local citizens. Likewise the same scenario would apply to Fiestas Patrones in places like Finestrat, Altea, and Alfas in regard to any possible buses.

Ex-pats have their say with the mayor
U N S U R P R I S I N G LY Brexit was one of the main talking points at last week’s meeting between Benitatchell’s mayor and the British expatriate community, although emergency evacuation points, taxes and healthcare were also on the agenda. British consul Sarah Jane Morris also attended the meeting with Mayor Garcia which was at Espai Moli and was arranged by the Residents Association Summit. This group consists of around 450 British living on the Cumbre del Sol urbanization.
Speaking about Brexit Mr Garcia said “The majority of British residents in our municipality want to continue living in Spain and I want to convey a message of hope. Whatever happens, you will never be second class citizens in our town, you will always be citizens with full rights” he said reassuringly. He also made a promise to lower the rate of IBI tax while Ms Morris was on hand to give the benefit of her expertise on the Brexit position for British residing in Spain.
Death driver three times over the limit
A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail by an Alicante court after he killed a cyclist while drunk and then fled the scene. 54-yearold Fresneda Benitez has knocked off her bike in Elda four years ago and was in a coma for five days before
passing away. A passerby helped Ms Benitez as best they could and called the emergency services. Meanwhile, the defendant went to his home which was only about 300 metres from the scene. After witnessing the nearby scene, the man’s mother realised that her son
had been responsible for the crash and told the local police. The court heard how the accused was breathalysed three hours after the accident and was still three times over the permitted alcohol limit. They dismissed his defence that he had drunk
half a bottle of brandy due to the stress of having hit the cyclist and was sober at the time of the accident. The husband of the victim said that he could have forgiven the young man for the accident, but not for fleeing the scene while his wife lay dying on the road.

Cleaning strategy announced
Baby big cats at
Terra Natura Keepers at a Costa Blanca nature park were delighted to announce the birth of a pair of cute kittens earlier this week. The parents, a pair
of breeding Ocelots (Leoparduspardalis), a wildcat, native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, Central and South America, have been
resident at the Terra Natura Zoo, on the outskirts of Benidorm for a number of years. Currently, vets at the park have only been able to perform visual examinations of the kittens, to avoid a possible stress situation for the mother, which could lead to the rejection of the offspring. Therefore, although the newborn pair appear to be healthy and feeding well, for the moment their sexes remain unidentified and the babies unnamed Ocelot females have a gestation of between 79 and 85 days, and their offspring when they are born usually have a weight ranging between 200 and 340 grams.
JAVEA’S Podemos party have pledged to bring all waste management and cleaning services back into the control of the Town Hall if they take power. Their Valencian Presidential candidate Ruben Martinez attended the meeting Mother, Selha, is attentive and careful with her two youngsters, with whom she spends most of the time giving warmth and breastfeeding them. Podemos said the advantages of municipalising these services was less spending, quicker implementation of changes, better working a highly developed sense of smell and sight allowing them to locate, track and capture their prey, in addition to determining the limits of their territory. At present, the babies are feeding on breastmilk, but from six weeks of age, they will begin to eat small pieces of meat, until around one year of age when they will become completely independent of their mother.
conditions and more streamlined management of the system. The meeting also noted the per capita spend in Javea on the services, which was higher than many comparable towns without being noticeably better. Although the worldwide population of Ocelots is considered to be stable and not in danger, it has been reduced in recent years due to the loss and fragmentation of their habitat, as well as the illegal trafficking for their skin and fur. With the new arrivals, Terra Natura now has a total of 21 big cats, from five different species.

Second-hand rise Soaring rents
There has been an increase of 0.8% in the price of used housing in Spain in October 2018, standing at 1,726 euro per square metre, according to the latest “idealista” real estate price index. When compared with the figure for October 2017. the year-on-year increase is 10.5%, according to the property portal. However, prices fell slightly in the two big Spanish centres of Madrid and Barcelona, by 0.2%. The price of secondhand homes has fallen in five regions, most

notably in Cantabria, where asking prices have reduced by 1%. Meanwhile, prices continue to rise across the Valencia and Murcia regions. Valencia province saw one of October’s highest annual rises at just over 2%, whilst Ávila is rated as Spain’s cheapest province. The “idealista” index is based on nearly 400 thousand properties on the company’s portal which were advertised for sale last month.
Spain’s property rental market is continuing to accelerate, with double-digit price rises continuing in recent months, with Madrid, Valencia and Málaga leading the trend. In Madrid, rental prices soared by 13.2% in October over 12 months, meanwhile, in Valencia, they leapt by 13%; and in Málaga, they rose by 11.3%. These rises contrast with the overall moderate increase in rental prices in Spain, which were up by just 2.7% on average in October, according to the latest data published by the online portal Fotocasa. “The average price of rentals in Spain are continuing to rise, but at a much lower rate than they were a year ago, when we were seeing doubledigit YoY increases” explains Beatriz Toribio, Head of Research at Fotocasa. “In fact, the 2.7% increase is so heavily influenced by the large capitals that if

we eliminate the increases in Madrid, Valencia and Málaga, the market would register a decrease of 3.2%,” she added. The sustained increase in prices in the rental market is mainly explained by strong demand. On the one hand, the increase in house sale prices in the major cities means that the proportion of people who are ending up renting is increasing – a change in trend that is also being influenced by the preferences of young people to rent. On the other hand, the dynamism of tourism in these cities, together with the appearance of accommodation platforms, such as Airbnb, in an environment characterised by low-interest rates, have made rental an attractive option for investors. That, taking into account the scarce supply available in cities such as Madrid, is pushing prices up.

Mortgage reforms Fairy tale village A recent survey by Spanish daily paper “El Pais” asked it’s predominantly Spanish readers to select the prettiest town or village in Spain from a (quite long) short-list of 250. The winner was the stunning walled village of Albarracin in Aragon. Said by many to resemble a fairy tale setting it sits on a mountainside, with a sheer cliff face on one side and a river on the other. Being in Aragon it is much greener than we are used to around here and still has all you can hope for in a “classic” Spanish town or village, an old town area, a castle and an impressive amount of places to eat
A new mortgage(hipoteca in Spanish) law is set to pass through the Spanish parliament soon, which will see the bill ensure that problems on the back of the property boom collapse are not repeated. The European Commission is actually threatening the government with a daily fine of up to 100 thousand euros per day, if the bill does not become law by the end of next month, after the previous Partido Popular government dithered around

the matter for the last few years. The bullet points include repossessions not being launched until the borrower is a year in arrears compared to three months at the moment. Floor clauses will be removed in all mortgage loans, with courts being bunged up a whole of series of claims that could still take many months to resolve. The new law will protect families, bolstering consumer
rights, should they fall into arrears allowing them more time to get up on their feet and service their mortgage repayments. The legislation before Congress will also boost credit, as lenders at the moment are having to deal with many legal cases, meaning that they are understandably reluctant to offer deals to new customers. New lines of credit will in effect act as a further boost to the already recovering Spanish property market.

and drink. The latter is partly due to the number of tourists that visit Albarracin, which regularly wins similar plaudits and is well located about three hours from Madrid and a couple of hours from Valencia. How about the cost of living in Spain’s prettiest village alongside the 1,000 people who currently call it home? Well at the moment a two bedroom terraced property would set you back about €100,000 and a three bedroom detached property with a garden about €175,000.

THERE are concerns that young Javea residents are being increasingly driven out of the town they grew up in due to high rentals costs. Even the less costly properties, which still come in at the €500 per month range, often stipulate in the small print that they are only available from September to June. This allows the landlords to rent the property out for the lucrative summer months at well above the rates that locals can afford. The government can help up to a point but a cap

on grants available means that in practice youngsters wanting to stay close to their friends and family are moving to more affordable locations such as Gata or Jesus Pobre. There are other alternatives such as house shares - although these are often seasonal as well. Of course what a lot of youngsters, even ones with a good salary, end up doing is living with their parents well into their thirties and beyond.
rates on the increase
AFTER enjoying some of the lowest mortgage rates across Europe for a while, recent rises have seen Spain become dearer than countries such as Germany, Italy and France. The average Spanish mortgage rate is now 1.94%, above the Eurozone average of 1.79%. This may not be all bad news for buyers
as experts believe that a higher rate gives the option of shopping around or even haggling with your preferred lender. One of the main reasons for the rise was that the practice of linking a mortgage to other products such as insurance is now less common, partly due to recent misselling scandals.

Local - Property Top tips for buying your first rental property
• Be aware of short term rental restrictions
If you plan on taking advantage of short term rental companies such as Airbnb check what restrictions the city may have placed on these.
• Screen your tenants
Make sure to screen your tenants with a background check and credit score.
• Know your inherited tenants
If your property is occupied when you purchase it make sure there are trustworthy tenants living there. Ask to see their rental payment history.
• Invest in single-family homes first
The upkeep is easier than multi-family or commercial properties. There doesn´t tend to be much wear and tear.
• Always do the maths
Keep it simple, does the rent more than cover your costs or not, assuming it does, by how much.

What is PKU and why test every baby for it? Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare but potentially serious disorder affecting just 1 in 10.000 babies born in the UK. So why do we bother to test every baby for PKU? People with PKU can’t break down the amino acid phenylalanine, which then builds up in the blood and brain which can lead to permanent brain damage. Phenylalanine is found in milk so ideally babies should be tested at least after 3 days of age when the baby has had enough milk feeds. However, diagnosis must be made within 3 months to avoid the possibility of irreversible brain damage. Your newborn seems perfect. She has got 10 fingers and 10 toes, but even healthy looking babies can have problems which you can’t see. PKU testing involves pricking your baby’s heel to get a couple drops of blood which is then sent to the laboratory for testing. You will receive the results by post. Don’t panic immediately if you’re called for doing the test again. In many c a s e s this is because either too little or too
much blood has been collected on the initial test. If your baby is one out of the 10.000 that test positive for PKU, management is simple and effective. Babies found to test positive will be put on a phenylalanine free diet (special milk) until puberty when they can normally resume a normal diet. However, in the case of females they must resume a phenylalanine free diet during any pregnancies. Affected families should be referred to a nutritionist experienced in PKU, usually as a part of a PKU or metabolic disease clinic. Despite this being a hereditary genetic disorder, all babies are tested without considering any possible genetic history. On discharge from hospital following the birth of your baby always check
that the PKU test has been done. If not, be sure to make an appointment with your midwife who can perform the test on the appropriate day.

U3A writers chose wettest day to launch new book
When the Creative Writing Group of the Moraira-Teulada U3A picked Monday, 19th November as the day
when they would ‘launch’ their new book of short stories, they didn’t intend to actually put it into water! Despite the fact that a red alert had been issued for extreme weather conditions on that day several members of the Writing Group valiantly set up their stall at 10 a.m. outside “Letters R Us” in Moraira, ready to dispense free cava and delicious cupcakes to the hordes of eager readers who they expected would arrive to buy their very own copy of “Lucky Escapes”. Unfortunately, the almost biblical
amounts of rain which fell from dawn to dusk meant that most people did not venture out from their homes and the visitors to the stall were far fewer than anticipated. Nevertheless, several copies of the book were sold, adding to the amount collected so far in aid of the ‘Make a Smile’charity. Grateful thanks are extended to those people who did brave the rain and also to “Letters R Us” for making the members of the Group so welcome. Now all that has to be decided is who is going to eat all the remaining cupcakes...

by Matthew Richards
Singers, Caprice, Dolce Diva and the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir. The individual performances were all of the highest standards but the highlight for many was when
all the groups came together for a finale featuring over 60 choristers. Charity President Elaine Horton came on stage to thank all the performers as well as the sponsors and everyone else who made the event possible.
Green market
JUST a reminder that the Jalon Valley Ecomarket continues to be held on the first Saturday of every month with the next one being scheduled for 3 December. The event is all about locally sourced produce, especially
ecologically friendly ones. You can also enjoy a large selection of freshly made tapas and there are always plenty of events for all the family. The market is held at Placa Major and opens from 9 am to 2 pm.

ONDARA’S Medieval Market, which was postponed last weekend due to the weather, has been rescheduled for the first weekend in December. The location remains the same, Avenida General Bosch and Placa Vicent Andres Estrella, and will be held on the 1 and 2 December, weather permitting. The market was originally planned to be part of the Fira de Firas d’Ondara but was unlucky enough that it coincided with the wettest weekend of the year to date. As usual the fair will feature plenty for all the family as well as food and drink alongside items for sale crafted by local artisans.

NEW Honda CR-V Hybrid The 2019 Honda CR-V hybrid is expected to take around 50% of all Honda CR-V sales in 2019 and at a price just slightly more than equivalent CR-V 1.5 VTEC turbo petrol models that might be an underestimate. It uses Honda’s 145HP 1,993cc iVTEC petrol engine running Atkinson cycle, combined with a 184PS electric motor in a system called “Intelligent Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD). There are three drive modes: In hybrid drive, the petrol engine drives an electric generator that then sends current to an electric propulsion motor that drives the wheels. Or, in EV mode, the 1 kWh Lithium-Ion battery drives the wheels directly. Or, if you put your foot down, a clutch locks up between the electric generator and propulsion motor so the drive is fed directly to the wheels. The i-MMD switches between these three drive cycles as necessary. Normally at up to 25mph, the drive is 82% EV and 18% hybrid. Between 25mph and 50mph it’s 50% EV, 16% hybrid and 34% petrol motor. From 50mph to 75mph it’s 23% EV, 16% hybrid and 61% petrol motor. Over 75mph, except on long descents, it’s mostly all petrol motor.
There are paddles behind the steering wheel to employ up to 4 levels of retardation under braking to recharge the battery on the move. There are ‘Sports’, ‘Eco’, and ‘EV’ modes. At modest speeds, it all works very well indeed and feels like an electric car. In most circumstances, there’s enough punch from the 315Nm electric motor that you rarely feel the petrol motor engaging. Push hard when overtaking, though, and you will get a CVT-like sensation of the engine slightly overtaking the car, but driven normally it’s extremely pleasant and relaxed and the loudest noise is the swishing of the 235/60 R18 tyres. Watching the ‘Econo’ meter without attempting to drive economically, we averaged around 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres, which is 54.32mpg in Brexit British. Actually better than the official WLTP combined economy figure of 51.36mpg, though we didn’t test the accuracy of the meter.
Like the Toyota Prius hybrid, the CR-V can actually tow up to 750kg, so it is possible to hitch up a small caravan behind it. There are some minor trim differences between the CR-V hybrid and its petrol
Cross country driverless cars
SPANISH researchers are among a cross European team working on the technology to allow driverless cars to travel between countries. At the moment due to lack of wireless coverage, roaming issues and different spectrums, this is not possible. However, if autonomous vehicles are to become a reality in places like mainland Europe they will need to be able to cross borders. The Universitat Politecnica de Valencia is working on developing tools to use on the Munich-Bologna “digital corridor”
by Simon Russell
which plans to test 5G technology to drive vehicles between Austria, Italy and Germany. It is also believed that 5G will make the cars safer with response times of less than five milliseconds, far quicker than any human being. The project in Valencia, named 5G-CARMEN, is being led by an Italian team and will be testing various scenarios as the technology comes a step closer to reality.
counterparts. All versions come with Halogen foglights and a Smart entry and stop/start system. There’s no spare wheel, not even a spacesaver because the lithium Ion battery sits where they would have to go. And there’s no 7-seater version. But apart from
that, trim for trim they’re the same as the petrol engine hybrids tested here. The Honda CR-V hybrid is a lovely thing to drive. Pleasant and calming, yet with enough handling and performance to be hustled along quickly.
It’s roomyand even has wide opening doors and flat seats that make ingress and egress painfree for the elderly. It just works. And throws down the gauntlet to Toyota and the next generation RAV4 hybrid to come up with something better.
New Toyota Icon The world’s most popular car just got a makeover. Toyota had unveiled their new 2020 Corolla saloon, which promises to be more efficient and more enjoyable to drive than the current model. A hatchback version of the car was unveiled last April at the New York Auto Show but the saloon is the car most people recognize as “the Corolla.” The generally unexciting, unassuming Corolla long ago passed such cultural icons as Ford’s Model T and Volkswagen’s Beetle on its way to becoming the best-selling car model ever. More than 45 million have been sold globally since the Corolla was introduced in 1966. So, while the unveiling of a new multimillion supercar may seem more exciting, the introduction of the new Corolla is unquestionably more important for both the car industry and for far more people who actually buy cars The most important thing about this new car is that, once it goes on sale around the globe, the Corolla will be
essentially the same car everywhere. In recent years, cars called the Corolla that were sold in different parts of the world have not always been closely related. There will still be different versions of the Corollas. The hatchback and saloon, for a start, will have slightly different personalities. The hatchback is aimed at buyers looking for a bit more excitement and driving enjoyment. The saloon will be available in a “performance” version, as well as in a luxury version and for those who want it all, a luxury-performance version. There will also be the basic car for the budget conscious consumer who just wants a way to get around without burning a lot of money or fuel. The Corolla will also be available as a hybrid. Compared to today’s Corolla, the design is just a little more crisp and modern. Toyota is promising better performance, driving feel and fuel economy in this new model. Car buyers have been shifting more toward crossover SUVs of all sizes. That’s prompted some car brands, like Ford, to drop sedans from their lineups. But small cars aren’t going away altogether, said Michelle Krebs, an industry analyst with Autotrader.com and the exit of other automakers from the field just leaves more room for cars like the Corolla and its longtime competitor, the Honda Civic.

Stars In Doggystyle on the Boulevard
Andy Mansell’s

friday 6TH juLY 2018
Twenty five years after the release of his iconic debut album, ‘Doggystyle’,American rapper, Snoop Dogg, finally achieved his lifelong ambition of attaining a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In an unveiling ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard, accompanied by his wife and kids, Snoop listened to touching tributes from fellow stars, Jimmy Kimmel, Quincy Jones and the man who spearheaded his career when he signed to Death Row Records in the early
‘90’s, Dr Dre. However, by far the biggest tribute to the 47 year old musician came in a ‘humble’ speech, conducted by the man himself. “Last but not least, I want to thank me for believing in me, I want to thank me for doing all this hard work, I want to thank me for having no days off, I want to thank me for never quitting, I want to thank me for always being a giver and trying to give more than I receive.” Spoke the self congratulory singer.
‘I want to thank me for trying to do more rights than wrong, I want to thank me for just being me at all times. Snoop Dogg, you a bad mother****er.’ He did eventually manage a few words of gratitude to his mentor, “‘Dr Dre, I want to tell you I love you, cuz, for being my brother through hard times, real times and good times.” Just be sure, should you go searching for Snoop Dogg’s
star next time you’re in Hollywood, make sure you take a poo bag along, to help clean up all the bulls**t.

Rebel Cat joins the cast One of the most anticipated new movies of next year, is the long awaited screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster musical Cats. Premiering in 1981, the stage show, based on T.S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, became the fourth longest running show in Broadway history and the fourth longest in the West End. Launching the careers of many well known performers, including Paul Nicholas and Elaine Paige, the show was recently revived in theatres on both sides of the pond, with both Nicole Scherzinger and Leona Lewis taking lead roles. The Movie version, is due for release in December 2019, just in time for the festive season and is sure to prove a huge hit
with adults and kids. A bevvy of famous stage and screen stars have already signed up for parts in the movie, including Judi Dench, Sir Ian Mckellan, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden and Jennifer Hudson, who will play Grizabella and gets to sing the most famous song from the musical, the hauntingly beautiful, Memory. Australian funny girl, Rebel Wilson, from the Pitch Perfect movies, is the latest name to put pen to paper and she will play Old Gumbie Cat, who according to the script is described as a feline who spends most of the day sitting and seeking out “warm and sunny spots”. Sounds like puurfect casting to me, in fact, forget it Rebel ……. Let me do it!!

I’m a Celeb goss
It’s back, it’s Ant-Less, it’s got a mixed reception from fans and already one of the campmates has threatened to quit, but I’m a Celebrity .....Get me Out of Here’s season opener was one of the most watched shows of the year. The 18th season opened to an impressive overnight average of 11 million as it kicked off on Sunday night, peaking at 11.9m. And, the average figure was 700,000 up on last year’s launch, making it the highestrated first episode of the ITV reality show since 2013. According to ITV, it was the biggest overnight audience for any channel so far this year, outside of World Cup matches, even beating coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding and it was also the fourth-largest audience for the launch of ‘I’m A Celebrity’ in the show’s 16-year history. But, show producers are very aware that the crucial on screen chemistry between the shows presenters is a defining factor of its popularity. So far, the jury is out, with viewers posting positive and less than enthusiastic messages about new host Holly
The jury’s out on Holly and Dec’s on screen chemistry, with everyone missing Ant
Willoughby on social media. One thing everyone could agree on, was that they are missing regular host Ant McPartlin. Holly is presenting the jungle-based reality show alongside Ant’s usual partner in crime Declan Donnelly as Ant continues his recovery following his arrest for drink driving, which resulted in an £86,000 fine and a driving ban. In other news, john barrowman has been installed as bookies favourite and Ann Hegarty almost quit in a tearful group hug with fellow team members. There is also likely to be just one late entry into the jungle this year, rather than two, with bosses having broken their budget to get Noel Edmonds to join at an apparent cost of 600k pounds. The only question I have is …. WHY??
Katy pips Taylor to top spot
Who’s the richest girl in the music pre-tax earnings of $83 million US dollars to Taylor’s $80 million, but world? You’d probably be thinking hey girls what’s a few million dollars Beyonce, Gaga, Adele, Michelle between friends. Mcmanus? I guess we won’t be seeing either Well, you would be nearly right, of them, carrying an overfull basket Beyonce and Adele are up there at the top of the career earnings chart, around Primark during the next year, but the figures for highest earner of unless they’re buying the company, that is. 2018, may shock you. In fact it’s a direct shoot-out between Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, the ‘Are they or aren’t they friends?’ pair, who’ve had more fall-outs than Simon Cowell’s had facelifts, depending on which day of the week it is. Katy just about Taylor Swift pips her buddy to finds out Katy the top spot this Perry earned more year, with yearly money last year
! te a r b le ce s er in ta r te en m r Benido singer will be performing in major concert venues across the UK, with the other semi finalists, plus Shan, who will join, despite being voted off last week. Got a feeling we won’t be seeing Danny around Benidorm too often in the near future, so it’s reassuring to know, there’s plenty of talented artists around to entertain us in his absence, including ‘Mr Versatile’ himself, fabulous local boy Pablo Bloom. Pablo took to facebook this week, to inform his fans and followers, that he is turning 36 (how does he look so young!) and is celebrating with a party at Heartbreak Hotel in Benidorm, this coming Sunday afternoon November 25th, around 15.30h. With cake and alcohol on hand to mark ‘one year more and one Congratulations year less’, it should be a party to to Pablo, & fingers remember…….. so, Felicidades Pablo,
Congratulations are in order for two of Benidorm’s most well-loved entertainers this week. Firstly, Danny Tetley continued his amazing X Factor journey, by sealing his place in next week’s semi-final, just one week away from the competition’s finale. This magnificent achievement also secures his place on the X Factor tour, early next year, where the Benidorm based

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Britain by Boat
A Very British Country House
NEW SERIES: Former BBC newsreader Michael Buerk and one-time political journalist John Sergeant take to the high seas aboard the 50ft yacht Bonaventure, exploring Britain’s coastline. The pair of amateur sailors begin their journey in Suffolk, exploring Lowestoft, Felixstowe, Bradwell and Ramsgate, before seeking solace in the small town of West Mersea, Essex, where John teaches Michael the art of eating oysters gracefully. The biggest challenge of this first leg is to cross the Thames Estuary - a maze of shifting sandbanks and treacherous tides and one of the busiest shipping lanes in Europe
NEW SERIES: Documentary following the staff of Cliveden House, a country house hotel in a grade one listed building, during their busiest summer season. A visit by Meghan Markle provides the hotel with unprecedented publicity, which the managers quickly capitalise on. Two social media influencers are invited to stay, while wedding coordinator Lydia prepares the venue for her clients’ big day

Double celebration
Danny Willett won the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Sunday - his first title since the 2016 Masters, whilst it was also a weekend to celebrate for Francesco Molinari, who won the Race to Dubai, after defending DP World Tour champion, Tommy Fleetwood failed to retain the title. He carded a four-under final round of 68 to finish on 18 under par, two shots ahead of fellow Englishman Matt Wallace and Patrick
by Neil Mortimer
Reed of the United States. The 31-year-old nearly hit his tee shot into a stream on the 18th hole before recovering to make par. “I’m massively proud of myself,” an emotional Willett told Sky Sports. “It’s been a lot of hard work. It’s been tough over the past two years.” Italy’s Francesco Molinari took the Race to Dubai, as Tommy Fleetwood floundered.
Needing victory in Dubai to overhaul Molinari, Fleetwood carded a 68 to finish on 10 under - eight shots behind winner Danny Willett. Molinari, who won The Open this summer, was confirmed as European number one during the final round. “It’s more than I ever dreamed of achieving,” said the 36-year-old Italian. Molianri is the first Italian to become the European Tour’s top player.
Andrea Dovizioso won the final race of the MotoGP season as 13 riders failed to finish a wet Valencian Grand Prix on Sunday. Ducati’s Italian rider, 32, finished well ahead of Suzuki’s Alex Rins, with Rins’ fellow Spaniard Pol Espargaro securing his first podium finish. “It was a crazy race,” said Dovizioso after securing his fourth race win of the season. “I am proud not to crash because there was too much water.“
by Alex Trelinski
Dani Pedrosa, 33, was fifth in his final GP before retirement, in a race halted for 30 minutes due to the rain. Pedrosa, a threetime championship runner-up in 2007, 2010 and 2012, equalled his best finish of 2018 to end the season 11th in the standings with 117 points. The Spanish rider bows out with 31 wins from 216 starts having spent his entire 13year MotoGP career with Honda.
Spain’s Marc Marquez, who secured a fifth world title in October, pulled out having gone over his handlebars early on, and later told reporters that “it was my worst mistake of the season.” Yamaha’s seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi was another high-profile faller, with his late exit allowing Espargaro to take second place. Rossi, 39, still finished third in the 2018 championship standings, behind Marquez and Dovizioso.
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
As the Premier League and Alfaz Fantasy Football League take a rest due to the 3rd Internation Break of the Season it gives us a chance to review what has happened so far in this Season in the A.F.F.L. and also take a look at the results of the 1st round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition. With just over a 3rd of the Season gone, all of the Main Leagues in the Fantasy have been very competitive with no particular team running away them. In our Main League, 6 different teams have made their way to the top in the first twelve weeks. The present leaders John’s Wee Aggies have spent more time in the number one spot, having been there for the last 5 weeks. Liverpool 94, Jin Dream Team, Pauline’s Vodka Army(3 weeks) Peaky Blinders and Tarazara have all enjoyed a brief spell at the Summit. The Junior League has been dominated by 3 teams, William & Henry, Ginger Ninjar and Bolettellitubbies who have recently plummeted down to 6th position. Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar have been the most consistent team in this Section having topped the Division for 5 weeks but they have now had to give way to the present leaders William & Henry who
have a slight 10 point advantage. Pauline’s Vodka Army is always one of the Front-runners in our Mark Carter Ladies Section and this Season is no different. At the moment they are the current leaders with a 13 point gap over Linda’s Team Tapas who have also tasted life at the top for a couple of weeks. Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team and Nikki’s Liverpool 94 also scaled the Summit in the early weeks of the Campaign. A few teams have been knocking on the door such as Barbra’s XI, Rover & Out, M.A.K. Forever and Le Hombre Rioja so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out has the Girls start jostling for a top 4 position. Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League the competition has been fierce with no fewer than 7 teams contesting for the number one spot. Bill’s team East Fifers started the Season of near the bottom and they have been steadily climbing and they have finally reached the top by taking over from Big Sam’s Army and Two for the Road. Kenny’s Albir Boro Army & Nick’s Blackcats have forced their way into the top 3 and left the early leaders Wigan Champs and Ortolans in their wake. The four teams who look likely
to be awarded a Wooden Spoon at the end of the Season at the moment are Ginger United, Cookie’s Crew, The Hatters and definitely Fleetwood Gian in the Junior League. The highest score so far this Season is 84 points which were amassed by Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja while the lowest score goes to two teams White Tornadoes and Northern Monkeys who both could only manage a minus 2 score. The Premier League up to now has provided the A.F.F.L. with 335 goals, 68 clean sheets, a massive 398 yellow cards( over 3 per game) and 17 red ones. There as also been 11 own goals,2 from Southampton’s Hoedt and 37 penalties awarded, 6 of them to Bournemouth. The Premier League has got off to a flyer this Season with the top 3 teams still unbeaten which has never happened before. The Top Fantasy League Players are as follows. Top Keeper Manchester City’s Ederson with 50 points which is 3 more than his Brazilian mate Liverpool’s Alisson. The nearest goalie to them is Everton’s John Pickford who is well behind them with 29 points. Manchester United’s David de Gea is nowhere in sight with only
6 points to his name which will be a big disappointment to the 37 Fantasy Managers who chose him. The highest scoring Defender is Chelsea’s Alonso with a formidable tally of 61 points. Liverpool’s Scottish flying full-back Robertson is in 2nd place with 55 points. Not many Managers picked the top Midfielder Chelsea’s Edin Hazard mainly because a lot of them expected him to go to Real Madrid(me included). He has 1 point more than Liverpool’s Mo Salah who has 62 points. Manchester City’s controversial winger Raheem Sterling is in 3rd place 4 points behind the Belgium superstar. Top Fantasy League Player so far this Season is Manchester City’s Record Breaking Striker Sergio Aguero with a total of 66 points which is one more than this Season’s hidden Gem Bournemouth’s new England striker Callum Wilson. He only cost 5 million in this Season’s Fantasy League and only 5 Managers had the foresight to chose this top Cherry! Top Player in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League is Chelsea’s Edin Hazard with 49 points, courtesy of his 7 goals scored(don’t forget mid-field players score 7 points for a goal in this
section compared to strikers who get 5 points for a goal) 4 players are in joint 2nd place Liverpool’s Duo Sane & Salah with Sterling and Everton’s Richarlison all on 42 points. Out of the 64 ties in our Weekender 1st Round K.O.Cup Competition 2 of them finished up a draw so that means Quantrill’s Raiders(33) Northern Monkeys(33) and Kemp United(27) Baines on Toast (27) will have to play again this weekend. Only 4 Junior Managers made it to the next round with one involved with a replay. The Ladies faired much better with no fewer than 13 going into the Hat. The best performance came from Jamie’s Kyle’s All Stars who knocked out the favourites John’s Wee Aggies by 46-40. The biggest win of the round went to Dave’s Jukebox Mackems who thrashed Mike ‘s Super Saints 43-8. The lowest ranked team Moff’s Magicians(192nd) had a good win against young Ant & Brads team by 32-19 and will be hoping for a kind draw in the next round which will take place after the replays. Well, that’s the last International Break over till next March so let’s hope all our Players come back fit and well and ready to go again as we approach the heavy fixture programme.

Rematch hitch
A potential rematch between old rivals Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank seems to have been scuppered before it even gets off the ground. The two veterans have held talks over a third bout, with reports suggesting that an announcement would be made soon. However plans to put them back

in action have hit a serious snag, as it seems both fighters would be unlikely to get a licence. Benn, 54, and Eubank, 52, fought twice in the prime of their careers back in the early nineties. But now it seems likely that the
Ashton out England wing Chris Ashton has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Autumn International against Australia at Twickenham. Ashton limped off during the first half of the 35-15 win against Japan with a calf injury that England say will keep him out for a further 10 days. After a four-year absence, Ashton made his comeback to international rugby against South Africa at the start of the month, before a try-scoring return to the starting XV against New Zealand.
British Board of Boxing Control would not authorise a third clash. Board general secretary Robert Smith said: “We’ve seen the latest reports on this and there hasn’t been an application to us for a licence.” “If there was, they would be considered like any other but it is unlikely they would get one.”

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny is out tomorrow’s clash against South Africa in Cardiff after failing to recover from concussion. The 29-year-old was injured in a challenge by Australia’s Samu Kerevi on 10 November, an incident which coach Warren Gatland called “reckless”. Gatland’s side will be going for a clean sweep, having beaten Scotland, Australia and Tonga this month.
After their impressive win over the All Blacks, Six Nations champions Ireland have an easy autumn finale to come against the United States, whilst Scotland play Argentina at Murrayfield.

Irish departures
Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill and his assistant Roy Keane left their positions on Wednesday, after a poor Nations League campaign capped a dreadful year for the side. The pair took over the reins in 2013 and guided the Republic to the last 16 of the 2016 European

Championships. However, they did not win a competitive game in 2018 and were relegated from Uefa Nations League Group B4. “I thank Martin, Roy, and the management team for the impact they had,” said Football Association
of Ireland (FAI) chief John Delaney. The Republic will be among the third seeds for the European qualifiers following their relegation to Nations League C and it appears that the team’s poor form and the dwindling attendances at the Aviva Stadium have prompted the FAI to take action.

HARRY THE HERO
ENGLAND’S magnificent year under coach Gareth Southgate came to a great conclusion with a two-one Wembley fightback against Croatia on Sunday to put them into the Uefa Nations League finals in Portugal next summer. That scenario seemed unlikely after a home defeat to Spain, and a draw at Croatia, but two impressive wins, and a Croatian victory over Spain last Thursday gave England the perfect end to 2018, which saw Southgate’s youngsters reach the

World Cup semis in Russia. Harry Kane got Sunday’s 85th minute winner to seal the deal and said:- “It has been a great year, for the country it has been fantastic. We had a great summer, after that we wanted to progress.” “We wanted to carry on being better and the only way to do that is if you beat the big teams like we have. It is a perfect way to finish the year, it’s been a
good run for me personally and a great one for the team overall.” “If we didn’t win if would have still been a good year but it wouldn’t have felt as good for sure.” England will be joined in the Nations League group finals by Portugal, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, with all the finalists having the bonus of being in smaller Euro 2020 qualifying groups because of making it to the finals.
