BREATHE MORE EASILY! Brits Get “No-Deal” Assurance THE RIGHTS of British nationals living legally in Spain are to be guaranteed in the case of a “no-deal” Brexit, thanks to a Royal Decree which is set to be approved by the Spanish cabinet today.

by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday, who said that he hoped that the UK government would offer the same deal to Spaniards in Britain if the country crashes out of the EU with no agreement.

“We will not oppose a UK delay”, said Sanchez, “but prolonging uncertainty by just delaying and not coming up with an alternative is not desirable”.

FRIday 1st maRch 2019 COLUMBIAN pop star Shakira, who is the partner of Barcelona football star Gerard Pique, has been given a courts summons over an alleged multi-million euro tax fraud.

The 42-year-old singer has been given a June 12th date to go before a judge in Espluegues de Llobregat in Catalunya, as she continues to be investigated over six counts of tax fraud amounting to over 14 million euros.

Prosecutors claim she pretended to live abroad and use an existing complex offshore corporate structure to avoid meeting her tax obligations from 2012 to 2014 - despite starting a relationship with Pique in 2011 and moving to Barcelona.

Shakira has been unable to stop the case getting to court, despite paying the money prosecutors say she defrauded authorities of at the start of last year.

Sources close to Shakira said she was not ‘in debt’ to the Spanish state and she had always fulfilled her tax obligations in accordance with the advice of her financial advisors.

Fresh hope for Kirstys family Almost two years on from the tragic death of Kirsty Maxwell in Benidorm, her family have been given renewed hope in their quest for information on the minutes before she died.

The Scottish newlywed, 27, plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Payma Apartments, in the resort’s Levante Beach area,on April 29th 2017.

Last August, when Ryanair announced its new cabin bag policy, the Italian anti-trust agency warned the airline and Wizz Air to suspend their policies, claiming that they misled customers.

The Italian regulator described hand luggage

as an ‘essential’ item for passengers, adding that its price should be included in the cost of a plane ticket.

It also added that the new Ryanair policy could result in unfair commercial practice, as it distorts the final price of the ticket.

Ryanair rejected the warning and brought the new policy into effect in November.

The Italian regulator said that most passengers expected to travel with a larger carry-on bag, and that by imposing an extra

payment of between €5 and €25, Ryanair was raising ticket prices in a ‘non-transparent’ manner.

The company said:- ‘We will immediately appeal this decision..Our baggage policy is transparent and beneficial to consumers.’

Eagle numbers soaring IT makes a change to come across a positive environmental story, but the comeback of a nearly extinct species of eagle in Spain is good news for once. The imperial eagle is native to Iberia but various factors, hunting by farmers protecting their animals being the main one, meant they had all but disappeared a few years ago. There are

now an estimated 400 pairs across Spain, three times the amount there were in 2000 and at 1950s levels when the decline started.

This week an imperial eagle named Cesar was released back in the wild Northwest of Madrid.

The young bird had been discovered by hikers after injuring his tail, probably by falling from his nest.

He had been nursed back to health and his reintroduction sees the number of birds in the Madrid region increase from 70 to 71. Although still officially classed as endangered, the eagle population appears to be in good shape and anyone caught hunting the birds is now subject to severe sanctions.

Brit dies in horror crash

A fifty eight year old man from the UK was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a stationary vehicle on the Alicante AP70 bypass earlier this week.

The accident occurred at around 05.30h last Tuesday, when the unnamed driver failed to see a maintenance lorry standing in the left hand lane of the dual carriageway, close to the San Juan/ Mutxamel tunnel, on the outskirts of the city.

Although signage, warning about the closure of the left hand lane were in place, the man, who was driving a Ford Focus, failed to see them and ploughed into the stationary maintenance vehicle at speed.

Guardia Civil Traffic officers, plus tenders from the nearby San Vicente Fire Station and two ambulances, arrived at the scene of the accident within a few minutes.

Fire fighters using cutting equipment were able to free the body of the British man from his car, but he failed to survive the impact of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, by paramedics from the SAMU response vehicle.

The driver of the maintenance truck, received slight injuries from the impact of the crash and was taken by ambulance for treatment at a nearby hospital.

Guardia killer jailed

THE Spanish Supreme Court heard this week how a Guardia Civil officer brutally killed a Moroccan man after suffering a “brief psychotic disorder”.

Angel Luis Viana was driving his private car on the A-3 motorway, carrying a handgun and with a machete strapped to his back. He came across Younes Slinanni, a 39 year old Moroccan, and it would seem for no reason other than his nationality suspected him of being a terrorist.

He drew his weapon and fired two shots to get Mr Slinanni to stop, which he refused to do.

The events happened in 2016 and the judge reduced the initial sentence of 16 years to 14 after the latest hearing.

Black widow trial continues

THE trial of a woman and her carer, accused of murdering her husband of only 15 days in an Alicante car park, has continued this week. The case hit national headlines last year when an off duty police officer intervened after hearing screams. He arrived in time to witness the man being stabbed by the defendants; the victim later died of his wounds.

Named by the press as Conchi, the female defendant has also been dubbed “the black widow” as this is the second husband of hers who has had a violent death. Her defence team have been accused of stalling by mounting unlikely defences, including accusing the dead man’s estranged son of the killing

although there is no evidence putting him at the scene. At the time she blamed “black people” for the murder although the police officer and other witnesses had seen no-one else at the time and the accused had a knife and bloodstained clothing.

A major development is that a psychiatrist has judged Conchi mentally fit to stand trial although she does have “some psychological issues”. She has also claimed to be wheelchair bound and unable to carry out the crime but doctors dispute this fact, saying her condition is largely psychological. The trial, in Alicante’s Provincial Court, continues next week.

Benidorm Hotel in evacuation drama Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation and one for lumbalgia, following the outbreak of a fire in a Benidorm hotel last weekend.

More than 240 hotel guests were evacuated from the Hotel Flamingo Beach Resort, in the resort’s Calle Esperanto, when the fire broke out around 01.00h in the morning of last Saturday.

Sources from the Provincial Fire Brigade said the fire affected floors 14,

15 and 16 of the building, which has 21 floors.

They also confirmed that the incendiary incident began in an area close to the main elevators of the hotel.

Four tenders and eleven fire fighters, were mobilised from the Benidorm Fire Station to the scene of the incident.

The officers quickly evacuated the hotel, before checking bedrooms close to the outbreak to ensure area

At around 03.30h, the firefighters concluded their work, allowing guests housed on the 14th floor downwards to return to their rooms, whilst those in the affected area were given alternative accommodation.

Those guests affected by the fire were aged between 51 and 75 years old and were in rooms close to the fire.

Four of them were transferred to the ImedLevante Hospital, while the other three were treated at the scene.

HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to protest against a visit by King Felipe, which saw photos of him being set alight.

He visited the Catalan capital to host a dinner for the annual World Mobile Congress meeting of mobile phone bosses at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, with eggs being hurled at the venue by protestors.

The king has become a polarizing figure in Catalunya since making a rare political intervention at the height of the secession crisis, when he called pro-independence leaders irresponsible and undemocratic.

Most of those leaders are currently on trial in Madrid.

Catalan separatists blocked roads in Barcelona, and carried banners with slogans such as “Stop Repression” and “Rotten Bourbons”, referring to Spain’s royal house.

CORVERA NAMED A MURCIA region air pioneer will have has name attached to the recently opened International Airport at Corvera, after approval from a Madrid parliamentary committee.

Juan de la Cierva was said to have had a very loose connection with dictator General Franco in the thirties, when he was asked for his opinion on what type of plane he should use on a journey from the Canary Islands to Morocco during the civil war.

Benidorm hits the UK tabloid headlines A stabbing incident, which led to the arrest of two British tourists last weekend, has once again drawn unwarranted bad publicity to Benidorm in the pages of the UK press.

The attack occurred around 22.30h on Sunday evening, when the two young tourists began a heated argument outside the Beachcomber Bar, situated in Calle Mallorca in the heart of Benidorm’s popular ‘English Square’.

When the men began to attack each other, security staff and customers from the bar were alerted to the fight.

One of the two men was pushed to the ground and drew a knife from his pocket with the intention of attacking the other.

Onlookers and door staff, were able to neutralise the attacker before he had time to cause any injury, and removed the weapon he held.

However, the other young Briton, also drew a knife and began to threaten the staff from the bar, before stabbing an Eastern European man working as a PR, or ‘prop’, in the chest, before running off in the direction of Calle Gerona.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the detainees, both aged 21, may have been from Scotland, owing to the large amounts of Celtic football fans staying in the resort to attend their teams Europa League match in Valencia last Thursday.

The two stab victims, of Czech and Romanian nationality, were transferred to the Marina Baixa Hospital, in Villajoyosa, where they were treated for their wounds, which were not reported to be life threatening.

In the aftermath of the attack, social media groups and individuals in Benidorm, were quick to publicise the incident, with inflammatory and inaccurate information being shared on Facebook and internet chat groups, suggesting that the two

victims were dead.

As the news spread, tabloid newspapers in the UK, were also quick to pick up on the story and quoted the Facebook groups in their articles.

The Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Record and other regional titles all ran stories with headlines such as ‘Bloodbath on the strip.’

Whilst the Daily Express ran a story with the headline, ‘Spain stabbing: How safe is it to travel to Benidorm as Britons arrested for attack?’

The truth is, that although the incident was a sickening attack on people doing their job, it was actually a rare and isolated incident in the resort, of the type which happens nightly in towns and cities across the UK, where knife crime is at epidemic levels.

Benidorm councillor for security, Lorenzo Martinez, who praised the prompt action of the national and local police, said “Beyond being an unfortunate incident, what is clear once again is that the State Security Forces are very effective. Proof of this is that, soon after, the two alleged aggressors were in custody.”

The two assailants, who were detained in custody, were expected to appear in court to face charges later in the week.

Shock rhino death at Benidorm Zoo

Ill wind remembered

THIS week marked the 30th anniversary of one of Valencia’s biggest natural tragedies, hurricane force winds that killed six people and caused billions of euros worth of damage to the city.

There are similarities to the 1987 UK hurricane in that the forecasters failed to see it coming and that it impacted on an area that is

not used to extremely strong winds. The 117 kmph (72 mph) winds blew in on the afternoon of 25 February, reaching 139 kmph at the airport (86 mph).

One man was killed in Plaza Ayuntamiento by a flying plank, another died in the Mislata after masonry fell off a building.

In the port area a young couple were killed instantly when a wall crushed them while the fifth death that afternoon was a woman hit by brickwork in the hospital area. The final casualty was a teenager who died on 27 February, 48 hours after being crushed by a wall. In all over a hundred people were injured, many seriously, and the city

landscape was transformed as trees, cars, power lines and ruined buildings were strewn everywhere.

The storm was over as quickly as it began but rebuilding work took years and many poorer residents were never able to properly repair their properties, many of which were of poor quality and never designed for 120 kmph winds.

Vets and zoo keepers at Benidorm’s Terra Natura Zoological park, were left shocked and saddened by the sudden death of one of their star attractions last Sunday.

Tarun, an eight year old Indian Rhino (Rhinoceros Unicornis) had only arrived at the park last October, from Wroclaw Zoo in Poland.

The male rhino, was transferred within the framework of the European Conservation Campaign, with a view to conduct a breeding programme with two females of the species, who have lived at Terra Natura for 15 years.

Keepers at the zoo first noticed a change in the behaviour of Tarun, last Friday, when he began to experience difficulties in standing and moving in a normal manner.

Vetinary experts were alerted and he was immediately put under constant observation, suspected of experiencing a severe attack of colic, a common complaint in rhinos, from which Tarun had suffered previously

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, the rhino’s health deteriorated considerably over the following thirty eight hours and despite constant efforts from the veterinary team to stabilise his condition, Tarun died early on Sunday evening from cardiac arrest.

After relevant authorities were informed, tissue samples were taken by vets, who conducted an immediate autopsy on the body and these were sent away for examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Terra Natura Benidorm is considered to be a reference point in the conservation of the Indian Rhinoceros as in 2012 it became the first zoo on the Iberian Peninsula to successfully breed one of the species in captivity.

A spokesperson for the zoo expressed their deep regret and sadness at the unexpected death of Tarun, which has affected the whole team considerably.

Love potion triggers bomb scare

IN a bizarre incident, Alicante police have revealed how a “love spell” caused two hours of train delays and cancellations after a bomb scare. The incident started on the 15th February when someone called the authorities to say they had seen two men of “Arabic appearance” praying then placing a package on the train track at Avenida Carretera de Ocana in Alicante City.

After confirming the presence of a black bag the police triggered their terror protocol, stopping rail traffic for 149 minutes. By this time they had determined that the harmless package contained a hollowed out pineapple as well as nails, pins, coffee grounds and peony plant seeds.

CCTV and other investigations led them to a 38 year old Spaniard (not of Arabic origin) who confessed to leaving the package as a love spell to reunite him with a former partner who had recently left. He called himself “esoteric” and said he had found the spell on the internet.

He was arrested for public disorder relating to the disruption. Five days after the event his ex-partner filed a complaint with the police of alleged gender violence and a restraining order has been issued, so the spell would not appear to be an overly effective one if you go in for that kind of thing.

Robbing on remand

A man who was on humanitarian release from jail due to ill health has been arrested and charged with robbing a bank in Gandia. He entered the bank last Thursday with his face covered by a jacket.

He was holding a gun and

demanded €900 from the cashier to leave the bank.

The bank worker handed the cash over then contacted the police after the man left the building. Despite the hood he had worn they were able to identify the perpetrator, who was well

known to them. He was soon tracked down and was carrying €550 cash and did not deny his part in the crime. The defendant was previously in jail for two similar robberies but was free on remand due to serious illness.

A woman has been found guilty of trying to smuggle drugs into a Valencian prison as she started her three and a half year prison sentence, also for drug trafficking. The 50 year old was searched as she entered the jail in Castellon when the detection wand used indicated that there were drugs in her groin area, although she denied this.

She was placed in a cell so medicals staff could conduct a more through search and

when they returned they found a condom in the toilet with hashish and cocaine.

The defendant had been the only person in the cell the whole time and it had been empty beforehand, meaning they could only have come from her. The drugs were worth about €1,000 and may well have fetched more in jail, the court heard. She has been fined and charged with recidivism with an increased sentence looking likely.

Counterfeit crackdown

POTENTIALLY dangerous toys and fake clothing were among over a million euros worth of counterfeit goods seized by the Guardia Civil in the region last week. In Crevillent around 1,800 boxes of toys were confiscated that were labelled in Chinese and had not been subject to Spanish safety regulations. The Santa Pola Guardia Civil, who carried out the raid, have opened a prosecution against the shop owners and management.

In a second operation a Chinese citizen was stopped at Alicante airport who was carrying 8,600 forged brand logos in her suitcase.

Fallas starts with a bang

A man has been arrested after an assault in an Elche nightclub that was so vicious that the authorities have decided to charge him with attempted murder.

The alleged assailant was arrested and charged and witness statements taken.

A medical source said that a further blow to the neck could well have resulted in the victim’s death, although he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Guardia gun thief detained A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a number of weapons from a Guardia Civil barracks last weekend. Five Beretta pistols and 150 rounds of ammunition were taken from the building in Lachar (Granada) on Saturday night. The barracks are unmanned at night and the theft did not come to light until Sunday lunchtime when the first shift came on duty.

ALICANTE-ELCHE airport is likely to see the worst delays for UK air arrivals in Spain in the extreme case of a no-deal Brexit, according to a set of calculations cobbled up by the Consumers Association magazine Which? and given prominent coverage in the British media this week.

Their survey suggests that British travellers planning to fly to the airport at El Altet should take food, water, and even nappies to survive prolonged delays, but the idea has been rejected by Spain´s airport operator Aena, which says that the scenario would not happen.

Which? made a “paper”

calculation that if Spain´s airports spent only 90 seconds making extra checks on each UK passport, it would take a single passport lane in an EU airport five hours longer to process a Ryanair flight with 189 UK passengers on board.

Based on that hypothetical exercise, Alicante-Elche airport is likely to be worst hit if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal, because 43 per cent of its arrivals are from the UK. Even in February, Which? says, the airport processes as many as 10 planes from the UK in a single hour, and in total, 2.9 million British passport holders go through the facility each year.

The Which? analysis of queues and processing time was based on data from the European Tourism Association (ETOA), but the theory of their report will probably not match reality.

Aena, the operator at Alicante-Elche, said it did not envisage chaos at Spain´s airports this summer because too much was at stake.

It said: “Aena does not consider that the most pessimistic scenario will occur. We believe that once the starting uncertainty is overcome, United Kingdom traffic can continue being strong in both the middle and the long term.”

This beautiful, relatively undeveloped island gets its name from being smaller than its closest neighbour, Mallorca.

It has a population of around 92.000 persons permanently living there, however, this increases by around 1.4 million visitors each year, who come to take advantage of the vast stretches of white sandy unspoilt beaches as well as

many water sports. Snorkelling and boat trips, fishing expeditions and windsurfing are some of the activities that can be arranged there.

In June, the island celebrates its Sant Joan de Ciutadella fiesta, usually on the dates of 23 -25th June. The festival is based on medieval traditions, and also on the date of birth of the Saint, John the Baptist on 24th June.

This three-day event is a highlight of the year, attracting many tourists who come to see the display of

wealth and the spectacular sight of the specific breed of horses, indigenous to Menorca. The horses parade through the main streets of this old, cobble-stoned city, which was the original capital of the Island prior to it being named by the British as Mahon.

Food and drink on the island are those typical to the Mediterranean way of life, the staples of which being crusty bread served with olive oil and selections of tapas – this being one of the main features of eating (grazing!) on the island. There are many restaurants who specialize in traditional tapas, so make sure you take time to check out all that they have on display before settling down for a delicious taste experience!

You can also arrange wine-tasting and also a visit to a Gin distillery, a throwback to when the British were on the island. Rumour has it that the origins of mayonnaise can also be traced back to the French victory over the British at the Battle of Mahon (Mahon-aise, get it?) when the French chef was challenged to prepare something for the Duke of Richelieu and all he had to hand were some eggs and olive oil. The rest, as they say, is history.

The main tourist season runs from April to October, with direct flights operated 3-4 times a week from Alicante. Transfers operate to all hotels on the island and public transport can take you from/to any of the main cities.

Here´s one job I would not want to get within a zillion miles of, and that´s working for an extreme cleaning company, which does what it says on the tin.

Husband and wife team Leanne and Kenny Elliott run such a firm in Cornwall, and they´ve published a portfolio of

pictures of some of the things they have to deal with.

I´ve just settled for the pic taken from one tiny flat that had 250 bottles of urine in it, but I´ve backed off from the 400 bags of human poo pic(seriously).

The couple say their sense of humour gets them through some of the toughest situations.

Leanne commented: ‘Kenny’s son Ryan, who works with us, picked the smallest straw and spent five hours discarding urine and poo in that flat.´ ‘You wear a good mask, white suits, gloves and make sure your water bottle is unique so you don’t mix things up!´ I hope the money´s worth it!

A good deed by two men in the Baltic state of Estonia nearly went horribly wrong after they rescued what they thought was a pet dog from a freezing river - only for a vet to later inform them it was actually a wild wolf. Rando Kartsepp and a colleague were working at a dam on the River Parnu when they saw the creature struggling in the bitter icy water. They managed to free the canine and seeing it was alive but unwell bundled it into their car, with it even

sleeping on Mr Kartsepp’s lap during the journey.

A veterinarian they drove to sedated and treated the animal, admitting he had suspicions about its true nature which were later confirmed by a hunter who was passing by.

One of the rescuers said that the wolf had remained docile although animal experts say it could easily have ripped the men’s throats out, especially after finding itself in a confined and strange place such as a car. “We did think

it was very heavy for a dog,” said Mr Kartsepp.

For precautionary reasons the animal was caged and has made a full recovery. The Estonian equivalent of the RSPCA paid for the animal’s treatment and said they were grateful to the brave, some may foolhardy, rescuers, who probably saved the wolf’s life.

An animal expert said that low blood pressure caused by the cold would most likely have been the reason the wolf remained docile.

THE Catholic Church continues to be rocked by sex scandals after one of their highest ranking members of clergy has been found guilty of serious sexual offences involving underage boys. In a case that has been kept sub judice until now, Cardinal George Pell was found guilty by an Australian jury of engaging in indecent acts, including penetrative sex, with two 13-year-old choirboys in 1996. Pell is the Vatican treasurer, a role that effectively means he is third in the complex hierarchy of the Catholic Church. This is the second trial after a jury failed to reach a verdict last year, with the latest case being held behind closed doors to avoid public reporting influencing any subsequent trial of Pell.

Breaking down the barriers The

PUPILS and teachers from Denia’s IES Number 3 School collected their prize this week for the short movie “Tu si que vals” they recently made. The film was voted the best short film by audience members at the recent MICE Valencian Schools Film Festival and tells about how special needs students have successfully overcome barriers to their education. All members of ESO and Bachillerato took part to some degree while the art and special needs classes all played major parts.

Pool project a Fancy being step closer a lifeguard?

As part of recent road improvements and changes there are now several extra parking spaces for motorcycles and mopeds in Javea.

The Avenida de Alicante and Trenc d’Alba are the areas affected which were previously car parking spaces. By converting to bike parking this means that it also improves safety for pedestrians by creating better visibility at crossings and pedestrian zones.

As part of the overall project the pavements along Avenida Juan Carlos I have now been completed, work which had been delayed due to the required purchase of some private land.

Wolff- Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW)

This condition causes the heart to beat abnormally fast at times. It affects approximately four people in every 100,000.

It is the most common cause of a fast heart beat in young children and teenagers.

If an irregular heartbeat is also present (known as atrial fibrillation), it can be life threatening. However this is rare and with treatment the risk is reduced.

When the heart beats the muscular walls tighten and squeeze blood out around the body. After, these muscles relax and blood fills the heart again. This process is controlled by electrical impulses.

In WPW there is an extra electrical connection that has been there since birth. This is due to the fact that an extra strand of heart muscle grows whilst a baby is developing in the womb.

Sometimes this extra

electrical connection does not cause any symptoms and might be picked up on an electrocardiograph (ECG).

An ECG is a standard test carried out if a person feels they have an irregular heartbeat. An ECG will also be carried out before any operation or procedure of sedation is used. In these circumstances WPW might be diagnosed for the first time.

For people that do have symptoms, they feel that their heart is racing before it slows down suddenly. This is known as supraventricular tachycardia. The person will feel a pounding and fluttering sensation when the heart beats.

During one of these episodes a person may also have the following symptoms.

• Feeling light headed, dizzy • Shortness of breath • Sweating • Feeling anxious • Finding physical exercise

exhausting • Fainting Episodes can last for a few seconds, minutes or hours.

Every individual will have a different experience. In some people these episodes can be a daily occurrence or for some just a few times a year.

Episodes often happen randomly. Some are associated with having caffeine, alcohol and physical exertion.

After seeing a doctor about these symptoms it is likely that a person will be referred to a cardiologist who will advise on the relevant treatment.

Treatment for WPW.

Treatments must be individualized for each patient.

In some cases the extra electrical connection settles down on its own.

If a person has a persistent episode, they may need a type of electrical shock therapy known as cardioversion. This

will jolt the heart into a normal rhythm.

Lifestyle changes.

Avoid the triggers like caffeine, alcohol and strenuous exercise.

Medication.

Daily tablets of a medication like Amiodarone can slow down the electrical impulses in the heart.

Catheter ablation.

This is successful in 95% of cases. A catheter is inserted into the vein in the groin, and guided up into the heart. The fibres that are causing the abnormal electrical circuit are burnt away. Patients that have this will not need to take medication.

Catheter ablation takes approximately 90 minutes and the patient is discharged after.

In the case of the professional cyclist mentioned earlier he was discharged after having catheter ablation and was back on his bike the next day!

A chubby sewer rat was the subject of an unusal call to rescue workers in the German town of Bensheim after it was spotted stuck halfway out of a manhole cover.

“She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip - there was no going forward or back,” animal rescuer Michael Sehr told the local press.

Some to question why why such a large rescue operation was perfromed to

save a sewer rat.

“Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect,” Mr Sehr responded.

Volunteer firefighters recieved the call on Sunday afternoon, the local fire department said, and reacted according to the ánimal rescue, small animal” code.

Mr Sehr, from the local professional animal rescue in Rhein Neckar, was already there - but could not free the chunky rodent from the top of the manhole cover.

PICK UP A PUEBLO!

Buying your own Spanish village, perhaps a forgotten pueblo – once thriving rural communities, now devoid of life, with their stone buildings crumbling, is becoming an interesting proposition for property buyers, and surprisingly not that expensive.

It is estimated there are as many as 3,000 of these abandoned pueblos, scattered around Spain, most particularly in Galicia, Castilla y León, Aragón and Asturias.

The actress Gwyneth Paltrow shone the spotlight on such unusual investment opportunities when she recommended buying a deserted Galician village as a Christmas present on her website.

A Dutch couple took up her suggestion and are in the process of clinching the deal for around €150,000.

That’s a bit below the average askingprice for these villages although some have sold for as little as €50,000.

Despite the publicity over cut-price pueblos, it should be mentioned that

Banks will also be obliged to carry out more stringent solvency tests on customers before granting a mortgage, with poor lending decisions being blamed for much of the last financial slump. Banks have until the end of May to bring in the changes.

DETAILS have been announced of the Alfaz “Tapas de Teatro” event which coincides with the Mostra de Teatre festival.

The Department of Commerce confirmed that the dates will be the 14th to 24th of March and there will be initiatives to encourage people to spend more and visitors to come to the town. The tapas will have a theatre theme when being named while the price for a drink and snack has been set at €3.50. A brochure will be published by the Commerce Department listing all participating establishments and other

The Mostra de Teatro fiesta will be held from the 11th to 24th of March in the Casa de la Cultura auditorium and the Albir open air Roman Museum. Actor Rafael Alvarez will receive an honour from the town, which selects someone from the acting world each year for special recognition.

Lexus UX 250h Compact premium SUVs like the Volvo XC40, Audi Q3 and BMW X1 are all hugely popular thanks to their combination of style, practicality and affordability. Surprisingly, though - while they are all available with a combination of petrol and diesel engines, there are no hybrid options.

That’s likely to change in the near future but, for the time being, Lexus is making its move in a bid to exploit the current antidiesel climate. The new Lexus UX is a small crossover of the same ilk of those cars mentioned above, but with a ‘self-charging’ petrol-electric powertrain. It combines a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor positioned on the front axle.

There’s a four-wheel-drive model, badged the E-Four, with an extra electric motor powering the rear, but Lexus is expecting the majority of sales to be front-wheel-drive. The advantages of using a hybrid setup are clear. You don’t need to worry about being snubbed by your neighbours for buying a diesel, while there’s no need to plug it in like the upcoming Volvo XC40 plug-in hybrid.

It’s also very efficient. Officially the standard model will return upwards of 49.6mpg depending on spec, and we were seeing around 47.0mpg with little effort during our mountainous test drive in Spain.

Unfortunately, facts and figures aside, the Lexus UX is an easy car to pick faults with. The interior is functional rather than a technofest and it has too many scratchy plastics for a car intending to take on the premium cars of this world. There are

buttons everywhere and the infotainment is all a bit Windows 1995. You can’t even mirror your phone’s screen using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto - a bugbear of ours.

All models come with Lexus Drive Mode Select. If there’s ever a car that proves driving modes are pointless, this is it. You’ll be best to keep in ‘Normal’ mode

most of the time - Eco restricts performance in an irritating manner, while Sport makes the steering pointlessly heavy. Opt for the Adaptive Variable Suspension and you get a total of five drive modes, with a Sport S+ function firming up the dampers for a sportier ride. We haven’t tried it, but the standard car rides very well.

Boot space and cluttered dashboard aside,

the interior is pretty good, too. The seats are very comfortable, with a high-up seating position even in their lowest setting. Adults in the rear will have a lot of headroom, although legroom is a bit on the tight side.

Dropping the rear seats, meanwhile, is easy - and they fold properly flat, giving plenty of space for bulky items as long as you don’t mind leaving the kids at home.

SEAT is taking the wraps off its vision of the future of urban mobility at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, with the unveiling of its concept car, Minimó.

The all-electric quadricycle has been developed to help meet the challenges of city driving, such as emissions laws regulating vehicles entering urban areas, the growing problem of traffic jams and the lack of parking spaces.

The Minimó brings together the benefits of the smaller dimensions of a motorcycle with the safety and comfort of a larger passenger vehicle,

minimising the many frustrations of travelling around our cities.

“The industry is adapting to changes in the way customers view personal transport. With the Minimó, the vision of our first product designed to purpose, SEAT is addressing those challenges, combining autonomous driving technologies with electric powertrain systems to create the future of urbanmobility” said Luca De Meo, President of SEAT. The vehicle is designed to be narrow and agile making it easier to navigate around urban areas, but is enclosed to increase both safety and its ability to serve a wider

number of drivers and their needs.

An all-electric powertrain with zero emissions means that entering city centres with even the most stringent emissions legislation is no problem. Its ability to swap battery packs to quickly and efficiently refuel the vehicle, significantly reduces the charging time for private customers as well as operation costs of an urban electric carsharing service.

The Minimó concept car will make its world debut at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and will also be shown at Geneva International Motor Show in March.

The Showman Must Go On

Best news of the week for fans of The Greatest Showman, came from leading man, Hugh Jackman, who confirmed that there will definitely be a sequel to the blockbuster musical.

In London, to support Jackman’s opening performance at last week’s Brit Awards, director of the movie, Michael Gracey told The Sun: “When a movie becomes as big a

success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel.

“So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now.”

Critics were wowed

by Jackman’s Brit performance, which bodes well for the fifty year old Australian, as he embarks on a huge world tour with big band and dancers performing hits from the movie and others he’s starred in,

Les Miserables and The Boy From Oz. It is not yet known if the new film will follow on from the first or be a prequel and although Jackman is expected to lead the cast, the involvement of his co-stars Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Keala Settle is unclear.

Hmmmm….. There could still be a role for me as the Bearded Lady.

The word legend is bandied around at will, but ask anyone who knows the island of Ibiza at all well to make a list of local ‘White Island’ legends and the name Tony Pike, who died last week at the ripe old age of 85, would appear near the top.

The hotelier who epitomised the hedonism of the holiday clubbing island and claimed to have bedded over 3000 women and men over the years,was described by the Guardian last year as the “ringmaster for 30 years of celebrity debauchery”.

Pike founded the Pikes Hotel on the outskirts of San Antonio in 1978 and it went on to became a much-mythologised venue for raucous parties and a favourite hangout for celebrities.

The hotel secured its reputation as the centre of the Ibiza party scene when it featured in a video of the 1983 Wham! hit Club Tropicana.

side of his establishment before George Michael sings about a place where you can “brush shoulders with the stars”.

The stars definitely went on to brush shoulders with Tony, including Freddie Mercury, who had his own bedroom at Pikes and held his infamous 41st birthday party at the hotel.

Over 700 guests including Bon Jovi, Tony Curtis, Naomi Campbell, Spandau Ballet and Boy George, who nicknamed Tony “the real Hugh Hefner”, drank 350 bottles of champagne, ate a cake in the shape of Barcelona’s SagradaFamilia Cathedral, and watched a firework display that could be seen from neighbouring Majorca.

Even though he sold the hotel in 2008, Tony kept a room at Pikes and could often be seen propping up the bar, right up to his death last week.

A true testament to Pike, came from Iconic Ibiza DJ, Fatboy Slim, who tweeted that the legend was “larger than life and twice as entertaining”.

The only big shock of the night, came when Julia Roberts announced that the Best Movie award was to go to Green Book, a road movie, featuring an antagonistic white man and his black employer, whose take on race relations seems more suited to its 60s setting than 2019.

Spike Lee,who famously didn’t get a best-picture nomination for his 1989 film “Do the Right Thing;” when the trophy that year went to “Driving Miss Daisy.”, was the most outspoken critic of the Academy’s decision.

“The ref made a bad call,” said the director, who was also nominated in the category for his movie ‘BlackkKlansman’, before uttering the best line of the night, “I’m snake-bit. Every time someone’s driving somebody ….. I lose.”

Luckily he did win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay …… Phew!!

JONES SHIFTS FOCUS TO BIGGER PICTURE IN CHAMPIONSHIP QUEST “The Championship is about the Championship. Grand Slams are like you go and buy a car and you get tinted windows.

Thus spoke Eddie Jones after England’s Guinness Six Nations defeat to Wales in Round Three on Saturday.

And their last three clashes with Wales have all been decided by very fine margins so it was probably about time Wales got a win after heart-breaking defeats in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

After a loss like that, the head coach is always going to try and put a positive spin on things.

But the fact remains, despite their loss in Cardiff, England are still well in contention for the Championship this year.

And a loss at Principality Stadium against a Wales side on a 12-Test winning run does not immediately annul everything that came before it.

The real test is how Jones’ side can deal with adversity now that they have tasted defeat. A Championship is still theirs for the taking, as long as Scotland or Ireland do them a favour.

Last year England won their first two rounds, slipped to defeat to Scotland in Round Three and imploded thereafter.

Fast forward 12 months, and with Italy and Scotland to come to AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT Eddie Jones’ side are undoubtedly Twickenham in rounds four and back on an upward curve this year. five, Jones and England have to ensure that history does not repeat itself.

Walking Football teams from around the Costa Blanca, in addition to the Manchester Corinthians from the UK, took part in a tournament on Monday organised by the MorairaTeulada Walking Football team.

in a one-off final for the trophy.

The final saw Moraira A beat Formentera 1-0., with the home club wishing to thank their lady members for hosting the event, and to Lynn Clark, U3A Group Coordinator who presented the winning trophy.

The course at Oliva Nova is looking very good now and todays weather was excellent even though it started a little cold.

There were 4 penalties awarded, 3 in the game between Bournemouth and Wolves of which 2 were converted Josh King missed one and scored one for the Cherries while Wolves Jimenez made no mistake with his spot kick. The other penalty at the weekend was scored by Crystal Palace’s ever reliable Milivojevic who slotted away his 7th penalty of the Season.

John’s team Wee Aggies extended their lead at the top of the A.F.F.L. to 20 points over Andrew’s Ballers. Nick’s Black Cats are still on the prowl in 3rd place just ahead of Linda’s Team Tapas. At the other end of

the table, Gazza’s Upside Team are still stuck in the bottom spot trailing 2 teams Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans and Richard’s Dunkrat by a massive 81 points.

The competition to win our Junior League is really hotting up with 16 points separating the top 5 teams. EL CLASICO CLASH REAL MADRID will seek some very quick El Clasico revenge when they entertain Barcelona in a La Liga showdown this Saturday evening(8.45 pm kick-off).

Saturday´s El Clasico is pretty much the last-chance saloon for Real´s slim hopes in trying to overhaul table toppers Barcelona, who are nine points clear of thirdplaced Real.

If Real deliver, then ironically

the beneficiaries of a home win would be Real´s local rivals Atletico Madrid, who are seven points behind Barca, and travel to eighth-placed Real Sociedad this Sunday.

Barca hammered Real fiveone in El Clasico back in October, which cost coach Julen Lopetegui his job, but there´s no suggestion that the same fate awaits his successor Santiago Solari if Real lose to Barc.
