Red Cross gets new technology THE Javea branch of the Red Cross can manage key community projects more efficiently thanks to a generous donation from the Roundabout Charity Shop. The €2,650 donation has allowed Cruz Roja volunteers to upgrade four computers at its headquarters in the Old Town and replace obsolete equipment. Areas that will immedi-

ately benefit include teams working with senior citizens, disabled people, social intervention, and training volunteers. And donations made in the near futrure have been earmarked for the association’s Local Emergency Project, seen as a vitally important project. It will allow the Red Cross in Javea to be pre-

pared for any form of emergency in the municipality natural disasters like fires and flooding, as well as assistance to people in extreme vulnerability. Such support is expensive, so the Red Cross appeals to all associations, charities and individuals in the community to consider making a donation “to help fund a project that has become a necessity for the community”.

Fugitive detained in Javea A 47-year-old man found guilty of the brutal rape of his former partner before absconding has been tracked down and arrested in Javea. The rape dated back to 2012 when he broke into his partner’s house, wearing a mask, and forced her

to have sex. He had been drinking and also carried out a sexual assault a court heard. He was found guilty and as sentenced to nine years and two months but appealed on the grounds that

he had just had a vasectomy and was unable to have sex while the wounds from the operation healed. During this appeal process he escaped custody and turned up in Javea this week where he was rearrested. Police believed he was very dangerous and had pre-

vious concerns he would try to contact his former partner who lived in Gandia with the accused. His appeal is still to be considered although he will almost certainly face fresh charges for this escaping custody and going on the run.

Coming in to land

by Simon Russell

NEW helicopter landing surfaces are to be constructed in Pego, Calpe, Javea and La Vall d’Alcala, the deputy director for Emergency Services Consortium for the Alicante province has confirmed. Jaume Lloret has been

visiting the municipalities with mayors and senior councillors to agree on the best locations for the new helipads, accompanied by the chief Fire Prevention Officer for Alicante. Lloret said “the work for the

construction of the new helisurfaces has begun in the Marina Alta because it is an area that

has a large density of forestry as well as a high risk of flooding.” Having these in place will reduce

response times, with forest fires still being seen as the most likely danger across the province.

Thanks everyone! BOB Welham, the President of Vall del Pop U3A, staged a ‘Thank You Luncheon’ in Orba to thanks the committee, group leaders and all the other helpers for their time. The meal at the Awraba Restaurant was held on behalf of the association’s members to thanks everyone

The 40-year-old man had been taking advantage of the good weather to hike up the Montgo when he fell from a height of about seven metres and injured

his knee, meaning the Denia helicopter crew had to winch him out. They were helped by a ground crew and the man, who also suffered head injuries, was taken to the Marina Hospital. Later the

same day a woman was in the Tango area when she badly sprained an ankle and was unable to proceed. The same crew and helicopter were called out and picked her up safely.

Women’s day of prayer

Pirates of Penzance by Jack Troughton

SOUNDS Familiar is looking for new faces to help perform the singing group’s next production, a quirk version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic ‘Pirates of Penzance’. Having finished the review show ‘Music of the Night’, rehearsals are starting for a fun-filled, bawdy and very modern version of the story. Director Philip Ashley promises it will be a fresh look at the story which revolves around a group of hapless pirates, who are less than successful in their endeavours, and the coming of age of Frederic their apprentice who leaves to find true love. Add in a Major General and his daughters and members of the local constabulary and it has all the elements for a typical farce and the musical score has also been reworked for the 21st Century. Anyone who would like to

be involved in this production can join Sounds Familiar at rehearsals on a Monday evening in Benissa from

7.15pm to 9.30pm. For more information call Philip on 96 558 1483 or email philip@ soundsfamiliar.es.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 28 The Weekender articles about ‘exotic’ fruit and veg and an item in the latest Gardeners Circle Newsletter about eating insects, prompt thoughts about the very serious side of horticulture and agriculture in general. The primary reason for agriculture is, obviously, feeding people but do you realise that the human population of the Earth grows by the equivalent of a town the size of Swindon (or if you live in the better part of Britain –York!) EVERY DAY! Somehow this number has to be fed but currently we don’t produce enough food to do so. As with almost everything that you look into, the information you get depends on who you consult – ranging from impending disaster to we will manage because of improved techniques, plant varieties etc.

Alternative food sources could play a very big part in this ‘managing’ and this is where insect eating comes in. There was a BBC programme (Can Eating Insects Save the World on BBC Four) on the subject which should have enlightened us all but clearly eating meat is not the way forward for the world. It is a most inefficient way of producing enough calories to feed everyone. This is speaking as a dedicated carnivore but one not unwilling to change if it is necessary. Actually when we cut down the last of our palm trees (yet another victim to the dreaded weevil), we decided to retaliate and fried up a dish of the succulent maggots with garlic etc. They were OK but not worth the trouble when the supermarkets were just down the road! And that is partly the point – until

we are forced by necessity to change our ways, we won’t! Memory suggests that that programme like most documentaries seem to focus on showing you people sliding down a wriggling caterpillar or something – producing a natural revulsion – but it clearly doesn’t have to be like this. Dried and

ground up and turned into crisps or similar (which are already available, though at the usual stupid prices that novelties start off on), how can you tell the difference? This is obviously a subject which could run and run but enough for now - I’m off for my steak and chips!

Subbuteo: finger flicking good SUBBUTEO fans on the Costa Blanca are urging expats to let their fingers do the talking and get into table football. It is hoped a combination of nostalgia and a competitive spirit will attract Brits to the Javea-based Marina Criterion Subbuteo Club, now in its second season. The club meets every Saturday at the Palau Municipal d’Esports in Javea Port and is open to people of all ages and nationalities, including beginners. However, despite being a British invention and its growing international standing; expats – especially adults - have been slow to get involved. Hamilton Academical aka ‘The Accies’ - supporter David McAulay – who played in a crunch Scotland versus England Subbuteo clash as a teenager – hopes there are people who will rise to the challenge. He said the rules have changed and the men have changed, although there still are stubborn loyalists, but it remains both fun and very, very competitive.

“There are actually some players who earn a living as professionals with sponsorship,” said David. “It has certainly evolved from boys playing in their bedroom. “I played Subbuteo in the sixties and was fortunate enough to play for Scotland against England - it was a four man team but I was a boy and the rest were men; I was probably 15 or 16...the match was actually drawn, honours even, but it was an exciting time in my life.” His career as a player ended when he joined the merchant navy and found that heavy seas interfered with the game. However, David is now back in training – practice and tactics do count – and he travelled to Valencia with the Javea club’s found Pascal Carrassi to play against the Turia Club. “I played against the Spanish number two and lost 3-1 but I was so pleased to actually score a goal,” he added. Anyone interested in playing Subbuteo can call David on 691 957 331 or email subbuteo.marina@gmail.com for more information.

Benitachel Bowls Round Up St Valentines Massacre Ladies v Gents.

The annual match between the ‘Boys and Girls’ took place on a beautiful sunny Sunday. Red and yellow cards were awarded to the boys for gross infringements, but they still managed to narrowly beat the girls (once again). After the presentation, drinks and snacks were served on the terrace. Thanks go to Dave Boutell and Sheila Fairburn as the team captains.

Northern league BBC Jaguars V Calpe Monday 26 February Thankfully, the sun shone today, for the Jaguars game at home against Calpe, in what

promised to be a tough game, as they are close behind the BBC Lions with a real chance of winning the league. Some solid bowling from a determined Jaguars team saw them win on three rinks, and also taking the shot difference by 9 points, so a final score of 8-2 to the Jaguars.

Winter League 21st February 2018 - BBC v San Luis The game at San Luis was always going to be difficult, they are the only side to have beaten us at Home this season! So it proved to be, BBC could only manage one winning rink and lost by 67 116, 2 points to 10. The Berleen team also had a tough game and lost by a single shot, 15 - 16.

T.M.G.S. at Hacienda Del Alamo 30 members and guest made the hour or so trip down to this oasis in the Alamo. The sky looked grey and with the wind buffeting the car it was obvious that we were in for a tuff day on this long course. Sure enough you needed a driver and a good 3 wood and for some a 7 iron to cover the 357m on the first hole! As always the greens were slick and this just added to the

difficulty of the day. To give you an idea of the strength of the wind, Captain John Eyre, playing the 371m par 4 13th managed to hit his tee shot but alas didn´t even reach the Ladies Tee and this one played DOWN wind!! Considering the conditions some good scores were returned but the €20 in the 2´s pot is being carried over to Alenda next week. Results : N.T.P.´S Hole 5 J. Dean, hole 8 & 12

BRIT TRIUMPHS

IN BENIDORM RACE

by Simon Russell

The Benidorm stage of the female cyclists Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, one of the cycling calendar’s biggest events, was won by British rider Hannah Barnes. The race itself covered three laps of a 40km route around the city, each circuit covering the second-category climb of

Finestrat and was Hannah’s second stage win in four days, sufficient to win her the overall event. South African Ashleigh MoolmanPasio was second overall while Spanish riders Alicia Gonzalez and Mavi Garcia came in third and fourth respectively. Although the race last Sunday was declared a success by the Town Hall

and participants, there was some controversy as many motorists faced major disruptions when roads across the city centre were closed to four wheeled traffic during the middle of the day. Drivers trying to access the area around the Town Hall and Avenida Europe could get no closer than Poniente in many

cases, while there were complaints about the lack of prior information from local business owners and residents alike. Bus journeys that normally took ten minutes were taking well over an hour, while restaurants reported cancellations from people driving in for Sunday lunch unable to access the city centre.
