TARGETED ASSAULT ON SAILING FLEET The Costa Blanca Yachting Association (CBYA) suffered a targeted assault on their entire fleet of dinghies at El Portet Beach in Moraira last week. The dinghies had already suffered damage and theft at the beginning of the year, after which a fundraiser was launched, allowing the CBYA to return the dinghies to the sailing fleet for members’ use in a
timely fashion. This time, however, the perpetrators slit both tubes of the inflatable dinghy, which served as the CBYA safety boat, from fore to aft, as well as the bottom. The replacement outboard had been stolen, but the worst was that a large stone had been used to put holes in the hulls of all three of the fleet’s boats, rendering them unusable... Continued Page 3

Dinghys Damaged From Front Page... This was a deliberate attack on the CBYA, as no other boats on the beach were touched. The police were informed, and they duly attended and took pictures. The CBYA may be able to repair one or two of the dinghies, with further expense and effort, however, since they no longer have a safety boat with an outboard motor, and since the El Portet beach location will continue to be open to future similar attacks, they have decided to suspend the CBYA Dinghy Section operations until further notice, and until a more secure location can be found. In the past, The Costa Blanca Yacht Association has offered great opportunities to members to learn how to sail and fine tune their skills. This is basic sailing, no instruments, no
fancy equipment: just sailing at its core. A great opportunity to connect with the water, the wind and some fun boats! It is a shame that these sailing opportunities are now suspended as there are many sailing members, both young and old, who are missing out on these opportunities at the height of the sailing season.
The CBYA would welcome any suggestions regarding an alternative location from which they can safely and securely operate their dinghies. The CBYA provides many exciting opportunities for members to get out on the water in various ways. With a fleet of dinghy sailors, TOMs racing sailboats out
of Calpe, and day yacht charters out of Denia, there is always something for everyone, no matter what skill level a member may have. Memberships to the CBYA are minimal at just 25 Euros a year for singles or 35 Euros a year for couples, and members are of all nationalities.

Benchmark for beach rescue THE Red Cross rescue service at Javea’s beaches has been described as “the benchmark for Spanish rock and cliff rescues” at a recent conference. Javier Server, the coordinator for the resorts beaches, attended the conference in the Canary Islands this week and told other delegates how the local Red Cross had grown to specialise in this type of rescue. Coastal areas such as Ambolo, La Granadella, Cap de la Nau and Tango all often require

attendance from the well trained and experienced specialist team. Cliff and rock rescues have also increased recently across Spain due to the booming adventure tourism sector. One of the proposals discussed was a temporary job swap between Red Cross workers from the Canaries, Galicia and Javea with a view to learning from the different approaches in each region.

Schools in for summer
The next day has more food and parades, including the costume parade at 6pm with prizes for best children’s outfit. There is another festero dinner that evening with a concert by La Canalla Orchestra which starts at
half past midnight. On Sunday there is a religious focus in the morning with Mass and the traditional collection of the image of the Holy Trinity and its parade through Calle Santisima. This is followed with more music
and food throughout the day, though no late night concerts for the Sunday. Monday 28 May is the final day with a last lunch at 2.30pm and at 8pm the “Dansa Grotesca” and awards ceremony for costumes.
THE registration period for parents and guardians wanting to sign their children up to Javea’s summer school in July and August this year is now open. As in previous years financial aid is available to low income families, and forms for this along with the standard registration forms can be collected from the second floor of the Social Centre. The workshops are for children resident in Javea who were born between 2006 and 2014 inclusive. The venues for the sessions this year are the Trenc d’Alba and Arenal Schools, while NITIDIA will be running the courses in collaboration with the Social Services Department. The workshops are part educational and part fun with the emphasis on the social aspect and constructive use of free time. The final date for submitting registration forms is 29 May.

ONE of Javea’s flagship projects, the new music auditorium, has hit financial problems just two months into the construction process, which has now ground to a halt. The firm who won the tender to build the structure, Joca Ingeniera y Construcciones, have said that they require more money to continue with the build. The town hall has refused, saying that the builders are obliged by the terms of the contract to carry out the project at the tender price and are simply trying to increase their profits at the expense of the taxpayer. Saved by the bell A gothic bell in the Santa Lucia Hermitage in Javea is among 70 bells across the Valencian Community that are expected to be granted BIC status i.e. something of significant cultural interest. The request has been made by the Ministry of
Education and Culture. The bells on the list date from between 1250 and 1659 and are usually constructed from bronze and adorned with inscriptions and other gothic style reliefs. The Santa Lucia bell was cast in 1450, is
inscribed with the words Te deum laudmus (God we praise you) and has classic eccehomo religious reliefs. The only other bell in the Marina Alta on the BIC list is the Sant Joanet de Mosquera in Alcalali, again dating from 1450.

making their bid, and merely gave a figure they felt would secure them the contract before coming cap in hand to the council once the work was underway. In the meantime work on the auditorium has stopped and the 16 month completion target is looking increasingly unlikely to be hit.

Jellyfish Dumping ground alert by Simon Russell
BATHERS in Javea were warned to proceed with care after dozens of jellyfish were spotted off one of the town’s beaches over the weekend. The creatures were seen off Playa La Grava and are thought to be carnation jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca), which can cause a nasty sting but is very rarely
serious. These are relatively common off these shores and are believed to have been blown in by offshore winds. There have been several confirmed sightings of the much more toxic Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish off the Costa Blanca recently, which are purple in colour and have a very nasty sting.

AN environmental body is looking into a luxury villa on the Javea cliff-tops that appears to be discharging waste water directly onto the cliffs below. The villa sits close to the Granadella cove, a noted beauty spot recently named as one of Spain’s top fifteen beaches. However the Institut de Recerca Oceanografic de Xabia (IROX) have inspected the area and believe this is raw sewage that is being dumped, causing an unsightly trail and unpleasant smell. The front wall of the property by the cliff is also in bad condition, further spoiling the view for people. If properties in the area are not connected to mains sewage, as many cliff-top properties aren’t, they are supposed to install septic tanks, a costly process.

Detained for abusing nephew A man has been arrested for crimes relating to the serial sexual abuse of his twelve year old nephew in Pego. The accused live with the child and his family and regularly abused the boy on occasions when they were left alone in the house the police allege. He also involved his boyfriend in the abuse which was filmed and shared with other paedophiles. Furthermore he had also offered the boy to third parties for money. Police has become aware of

These investigations led them to discover that the abuse was being carried out against his own nephew, in the house he also shared with the boy’s mother, two other children and his own sister. They arrested both men, and the uncle of the victim has been detained without bail awaiting trial.

Polluted beauty spot RESIDENTS have filed an official complaint about the current state of the River Girona where it borders Els Poblets and Denia. In recent years what was once regarded as a beauty spot has become polluted and plagued with mosquitoes while dead fish regularly wash up on the river banks. Local Mari Carmen Fernandez said “The smell is unbearable; the mosquitoes make it almost impossible to visit and live here, while houses in the area are being devalued.” A build-up of algae seems to have triggered the problem and is responsible for much of the stench. Another stretch of the river, alongside Denia’s Las Marinas, had the same problem and this was cured by removing the algae and other vegetation. The Environment Department in the area has admitted that it is a major problem, and is working towards possible solutions. However they also need to agree a plan of action with the Hydrographic Confederation.
Mozzy map of Marina Alta THE local Department of Health has produced a map showing the Marina Alta municipalities currently affected by Tiger Mosquitoes. They are Benimeli, Calpe, Denia, Javea, La Vall de Laguar, Ondara, Orba, Pedreguer, Rafol, Sagra, Sanet y Negrals, Tormos and Teulada. Of the
major coastal towns only Benissa and Benitatchell are free from the pests. This may be down to the higher population density as well as a larger number of swimming pools and other standing water which is the favoured habitat of the mosquitoes. The area has produced a leaflet on good practice
to avoid and eradicate the insects, produced in conjunction with the University of Valencia. As previously reported in “The Weekender” these include measures such as not having standing water where possible, covering pools and wells etc. and cleaning out guttering.

SCUPPER CLASS TWITS? When In Spain? by Fiona Jennison
The Spanish equivalent of the expression “born with a silver spoon in his mouth” is “born with a “barra” (loaf of bread) in his hand” which I find a rather amusing illustration that Spain doesn´t suffer from such intense class divisions (and tea addiction) as the Brits do. Not sure how tasty the bread would be though for Juanito. Lately I have been visiting “posh
schools” in the Costa Blanca. As in “private” schools or nonsensically called “public” schools in the UK (I think this confusing description stems from the introduction of non-religious schools). AnyhooI have been visiting these English language schools to do games workshops and sell signed copies of my book (shameless plug again “Gadgets Away – 100 Great Games” Available on Amazon) I am a proper “lefty” and have never approved of the private education sector. A level playing field seems fair to me.Secondly I feel that going to a comprehensive school gave me the ability to interact with people from all walks of life. When as an adult I started to meet “hoorays” I detested their over-confidence and the way that they would lounge back in chairs with their legs wide apart as if they owned the world. Is private school a good investment? The Social Market Foundation shows that children from fee-paying schools will have earned almost £200,000 more on average than state school pupils by the time they reach middle age. Going back to confidence though, exam results are not what makes young people employable; private schools teach people to interview well, debate well and be presentable. This is what state schools need to learn to do. Give confidence. Buthopefully not too much!
for the family in a “caring and inspirational place”. Said another favouriteHead of mine, Natalia Gray, of her very cute primary school in Sierra Bernia“We want to help
who had recommended me. “Fiona was the best interviewee I have ever met” said Hooray Henrietta. “But I am a bit concerned about her education”. Blimey. I got 9 A grade O levels, 2 A grade A levels and a 2.1
kids discover the world. We set strong language learning objectives (English, Spanish and French). Families come to our school for this, and for the strong family and community atmosphere.” In my opinion schools are only as good as the teachers that work there. And even the best teachers can only do their best in reasonably-sized classes. I am very lucky in that my daughter goes to a local village school and has only 11 classmates. Her teacher has the time to really invest in her. I am the daughter of two quite extraordinary teachers, by the way. Maybe why I am so opinionated on this subject. I only had one incident of snobbery about my educational background in my career when interviewed in my twenties for the job of TV producer on the chat show hosted by the now uber-famous Mel Gedroycand Sue Perkins “Light Lunch”. I was interviewed by an incredible snob who owned the company (called Henrietta of course) but I had prepared lots of ideas for comedy items for the hosts and demonstrated my knowledge of comedy. After the interview she confided in the double-barrelledfriend
in English Literature. Her problem? No red bricks!!No celebrity contacts, no doubt she feared (she was wrong!). Those in favour of private education in the UK believe it´s not what you know, it´s who you know. Henrietta had been to college with Madonna. I just remember wanting to learn. Isn´t that what school is for?
It´s a whole different kettle of little fishies here. Nicer. Figures show that the majority of ex-pats send their children to state schools in Spain, but naturally many ex-pat parents understandably feel that they have no choice but to send their children to international schools as otherwise their children (especially aged 7 or over) would be over-whelmed by new schools and new languages (let´s not forget Valenciano – I will write another article about that soon!)I am now convincedthat international schools fast trackbenefits that are not just about the kids. I visited the XIC in Javea on International Day recently, when parents turn up and
cook for everyone in their own national style. I interviewed many families who had really made major financial sacrifices to pay the bills for their children to go to “private” school, none of whom had any regrets at all, and for some of whom it was a necessity not knowing how long they would be in SpainAlso helped by the fact that as we all agreed the primary school headmaster Steve Jarmanis a real gem. “International Day shows what XIC is all about and that we are a true family” says Steve. “To see so many parents from so many different countries mingling, cooking and eating together, reflects the diversity of our school. With 27 different nationalities in such a small school, it fosters an amazing environment for children to grow up in. Children often arrive with no English or Spanish, different accents and cultures. Consequently, they are growing up with no prejudices.” Steve makes a very important point here. Patience and acceptanceare virtues that are the biggest ones that children need to learn. (Apart from Mum being the boss!) Richard Wijeratne, the long-time and very popular head of the very well run but bigger international school Lady Elisabeth (where I have met many amazing teachers) also commented that his new workplace seemed to him to be primarily about support
I have just remembered my favourite joke that I wrote for my presenters Mel and Sue. Melvynn Bragg was on the show (grumpy over-priveleged bugger actually). Sue “Mel, yoú re very cultured areń t you? Didń t you go to a Monet exhibition at the Tate last Friday?” Mel “No, Sue. I got into a right state last Friday night from drinking too much Dubonnet and made an exhibition of myself .”
Boom, boom.

Local wine big in Japan THE Japanese Wine and Spirits Association has given out a top award to a Jalon wine. The Riu Rau mistela, produced by Bodegas Xalo, won a Double Gold, the second highest award possible. The 2013 vintage wine is made from the famous local Muscat Alexandria grape, one of the oldest

If you want to have a look for yourself, the new area is decorated in violet colours and clearly signed “solidaritat” and “igualitat”. Rising from the ashes
DESPITE being devastated by fire and floods over a year ago, Javea’s Granadella beach has appeared in the list of Spain’s top 15 beaches compiled by one of the country’s most influential travel writers. The fires and subsequent months of ashes led many locals to fear that it could be years before the little cove retained its natural beauty. However writing in Spanish national newspaper “El Pais” Guillermo Esain wrote of La Granadella’s “turquoise shades of water, excellent climactic conditions, and beautiful setting at the foot of tree lined cliffs.” He urged readers to take a dip in its shallow

La Granadella appeared at number five on Esain’s list, although they were not necessarily ranked from top to bottom, more a list of 15 great beaches to go in Spain. Beaches from north, south, east and west featured as well as the islands, with Playa Granadella being the only appearance from the Valencian Community. Further down this stretch of coast Murcia had two in the list (Cartagena and Lorca) while Playa Nijar in Almeria was also praised.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA 39 These articles started in July last year and among the first pieces of advice was this:“The first point to be made is DO NOT buy plants at this time of year! As mentioned last week, the beautiful plants available in the Garden Centres have been pampered spoilt if you will and are simply not prepared to withstand mid-summer conditions on the Costas. Best planting time is the autumn from about the middle of September onwards when you can expect temperatures to drop and rain to fall. All this is assuming that you are planting trees, shrubs or other perennials that you hope to keep going for a number of years. Annuals which will die after flowering will manage without special treatment as long as they are watered while vegetables for eating are something else altogether and will be dealt with separately. You should try to buy small plants that are balanced in growth with only as much above the pot as there are roots in the pot and preferably not growing in a peat or similar based compost. This tends to shrink away when dry leaving the

This is just as true in May as it was then, putting it simply – ‘How do you propose to keep the plants alive through the summer?’ Incidentally, an English nurseryman

Note that it’s only “many” because there are numerous species which come from conditions much easier than ‘desert’ but this subject is worthy of more attention another time.

Medex Causaal Deodorant is a unique, mild deodorant cream (without the addition of alcohol or aluminum!) That gets its effect largely from nature. It contains more than 20 natural ingredients, all of which have a specific deodorizing effect. The average user only needs to apply the product once every 5-7 days to get rid of the nasty perspiration smell. Intermittent repositioning, for example after showering, is not necessary.
The effect of Medex Causaal Deodorant is, in contrast to the “regular” deodorants, measured not in hours but in days. Medex Causaal Deodorant works after you have washed it away days ago. This is because the microbes, which cause the unpleasant odor, are addressed by the ingredients of Medex Causaal Deodorant. It is recommended to apply Medex Causaal Deodorant 1 to 2 times a week, because after 5 to 7 days the microbes will slowly recover by most people. Home sales ďŹ gures decline in March, seasonality partly to blame
The number of Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Registry fell by 2% in March compared to the same time last year, according to figures just released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Numbers from the Association of Spanish Notaries for sales complete in March also show a decline for the first time in months.
place in March were down 2.7%, though on a seasonally adjusted basis transactions were up 3.1% (Easter was in March this year, April last year). The figures from the INE might also have been in positive territory on a seasonally adjusted basis. Nonetheless, the numbers suggest the market slowed down in the lead up to March after months of double-digit growth.
There were 35,424 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in March, New and resale Spanish and 39,579 if you include homes subsidised by the Government (known as VPO) all property transactions according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based New home sales inscribed in March on sales inscribed in the Land Registry. were down 4%, and resales down 2%, the first decline on both fronts since April 2017. Sales are inscribed in the land registry But once again, on a seasonally adjusted between one and three months after basis, both figures might been positive. completion, so these figures lag the market. by a 49% decline in new home sales – too big to be a question of seasonality. What lies behind this decline? It might be a oneoff, in which case we will have to see what happens in the next couple of months. Or it might be due to a shortage of finished new homes for sale, as off-plan sales are not counted in these figures. Resales, for their part, were up 1%, suggesting it was not a question of a big decline in demand.
is clearly still weighing down on the overall market, and has turned the region from one of the hottest market in Spain into one of the coolest, though that might not be such a bad thing for a while. At the other end of the scale, sales increased by 20% or more in Huelva, Almeria, and Teruel, all small markets where a small increase in sales can lead to big percentage increases.
Sales in the Balearics were down 11% driven by a 14% decline in resales that a 2% The market in Madrid, the bellwether rise in new homes sales was not big enough for Spain, was up 1%, with resales up 4% to compensate for. and new home sales down 9% (excluding off-plan sales). Sales in Catalonia were down 1%, driven by a 7% decline in resales that All in all the market appears to have overwhelmed the 42% increase in new cooled in the lead up to March after many home sales (the resale market is still much months of double digit growth (with the bigger). The situation in Barcelona was exception of Catalan provinces where the even more stark, with a 2% overall decline political situation is a unique factor). A onedriven by a 9% decline in resales that off or the start of a new trend? Most likely overwhelmed a 55% increase in new home the former, though we won’t have to wait sales. The constitutional crisis in Catalonia long to find out.

2. Patience is waiting. Not passively waiting. That is laziness. But to keep going when the going is hard and slow - that is patience. 1. Return to the big time step closer CLUB Deportivo Denia are just one game away from a return to the Spanish third division after a victory against fellow promotion c o n t e n d e r s Beniganim last
weekend. Against d a n g e r o u s o p p o n e n t s , home side Denia effectively ended the contest in the first fifteen minutes after going two nil up. They scored twice
more in the second half to wrap things up, meaning they just need a point against Benidorm this weekend to ensure a return to division three after an absence of ten years.
Their last spell at that level, in the 200708 season, ended controversially after they were relegated for financial irregularities, despite finishing a creditable 12th.
El Cid J&J 2-wood T.M.G.S. visits El Valle mixed pairs competition This course is not on our frequent visit list, although it is in good condition, with a small exception that the greens were a little on the slow side, they are usually faster than most courses on the Costa Blanca. Maybe this was the reason for low scoring from the 40 members and guests that turned up on a bright sunny day with just a slight chilled wind to make the golf a little more interesting. Club selection seemed to be the biggest problem, with most of the greens elevated and with false fronts it was difficult
to take an extra club that would have ensured that the ball stayed on the green instead of it winding its way down to the bottom of the run off areas where you were lucky if your chip shot managed to stay on the green or decide that a visit to the sand on the opposite side would be more interesting! Results; N.T.P.’s Hole 6 S. Dean, Hole 9 NADA, Hole 12 D. Kirkham, Hole 15 K. Alm. Alan (cuddly from Dudley) Rickers won the €30 contained in the 2’s pot by making a birdie on the par 3 9th. Our Best guest this week was Mr.
J. Nichols with the best score of the day, 36 points. He will be a member the next time he plays but may need a handicap reduction first. (Only Joking). Bronze cat; 3rd Mrs. P. Sabine 29, 2nd L. Holmberg 34, 1st Mrs. S. Twentyman 34 on L/H. Silver cay, 3rd K. Krog 29, 2nd M.V. Grinsven 29 L/H, 1st A. Rickers 32. Gold cat: 3rd J. Whitaker 30, 2nd O. Cederberg 34, 1st P. Bradley 34 L/H. El Cids J&J 2-wood mixed pairs competition was played this week in glorious warm weather and sunshine. There were teams from many Costa Blanca clubs and all matches were played with great competitive spirit. This competition was kindly sponsored by Trevor
and Coral Wearn who sadly were unable to travel from the UK to attend this year. They asked long term friend Pat Metcalfe to present the prizes on their behalf. Jean McLaughlin and Chris Salter from Javea Green won the final by defeating a strong team from
Vistabella. Congratulations to Jean and Chris. El Cid wish to thank all competitors, umpires and organisers for such a fantastic competition. Don’t forget to enter their Aussie Pairs competition which is coming up in June! (Contact Stewart Beattie)
