from Altea apprehended the fugitives, in the exclusive Altea Hills housing development, where many properties are value in millions of euros. The men were travelling in a luxury, British plated vehicle, when the officers intercepted them, after tailing their movements for some time. After arrest the pair were detained in custody pending extradition proceedings.

Burning boats and bushes by Simon Russell

TWO simultaneous but unrelated incidents stretched Marina Alta fire-fighting resources to the limit on Tuesday. The crews were first alerted to a boat fire at the Marines de Denia at around mid-morning. When they arrived the team found the twelve meter boat, which was in dry dock, ablaze with the flames being kept under control by dockyard workers. While attending this blaze the fire teams were informed of a fire breaking out near the Monte Pego urbanization. A Benissa crew and remaining Denia officers went to the scene where they found a number of fruit bushes on fire at an orchard. They were able to get the blaze under control after about an hour, although around half a hectare of vegetation was destroyed. The Guardia Civil and fire volunteers were also called to the scene to help the short-handed professionals.

Go ahead given for school works THE Ministry of Education has been asked to give final approval to the works on Javea’s schools that the town council have now agreed on. Using the Edificant initiative the town will be responsible for carrying out the work while the Ministry will finance them. Projects include a new gymnasium for the Trenc d’Alba School as well as the extension of the canteen and kitchens. Vicente Tena School is having its gym completely refurbished

and an emergency staircase installed while the bathrooms are to be fully reformed. These projects alone have a budget of about €1.6 million. One item that is still under discussion is how best to proceed on the rundown Graull School. Some people think that the school should be demolished and a brand new centre built, while others think a complete reformation will be sufficient.

JAVEA’S “Els Colors de la Musica” cycle of concerts closes this Saturday (26 May) with a performance of “Winterreise” – Winters Journey – composed by Franz Schubert. This famous piece is actually a set of 24 songs setting the poetry of Wilhelm Muller to music and relating a winter’s walk by a jilted lover.

Oscar Oliver will be on the piano for this interpretation with baritone Vicente Antequera performing vocal duties. Both are well regarded and increasingly well-known young Valencian musical artists. The concert is at the Mare de Deu del Loreto Church and starts at 10pm; entrance is free.

Drugs hotspot closed down A legal cannabis association in Denia was being used as a front for illegal drug dealing in the Marina Alta town. Investigations began after police became aware of a large amount of drugs passing through a part of the town. Surveillance in the area led them to three Spanish men, listed as the president, treasurer and secretary of the cannabis association. The “head office” of the association had unusually strong security,

by Simon Russell

with access controlled by closed circuit cameras and no windows. There was activity at the property at all hours of the day and night and, after gaining sufficient evidence to launch a raid, the police found hashish, marijuana, hashish oil and other drug paraphernalia. The three men have been charged with membership of a criminal organisation and crimes against public health.

Posters were hung around the town and an extensive police search began. Early leads included an online relationship she had with an older youth in Germany, though this led to nothing in the end. There were

also extensive searches made in the Sagunt marshes where her final mobile phone signal was believed to have come from. Each year on 20 May Khrystyna’s school holds a vigil for the young girl and echo the hope that someday she will return.

THE first BonaventuraFest is coming to the normally quiet town of Pedreguer over four days in the summer, 12 to 15 July. Mayor Sergi Ferrus presented the programme of events which ties in with the local fiestas at this time. There are 18 bands lined up to appear, all with a rock theme but covering different parts of the genre. There are national, local and international acts appearing with Doctor Voltage, Leone, Gallos and Mothercrow among those on the billing. Entrance will be free to all and there will be a presentation party on 16 June at the Rockodrom Hall. This will feature The Priscillas, A-Phonics and Benturas with DJ Pere Vegara. This event will cost €10 (€12 on the door) and €6 for people under 22-years-old.

Top local chef planning Helipad in the pipeline London restaurant THREE starred Michelin chef Quique Dacosta has been talking about his plans to open a paella restaurant in London later this year. Talking at the Europe Forum he said that “all Valencianos who have travelled have said how poor paella is in places such as Paris, New York and London but who does anything about it?” Dacosta thinks he is the man to tackle the task and take an authentic taste of Valencia – and the Marina Alta – to the UK’s capital, a concept that he can see spreading to other cities under the “InPaella” brand. He has still not confirmed what the restaurant will actually be called when it opens later this year. However Dacosta’s Denia establishment is named after him and as so many “super-chefs” are brands in their own right he may well go down that route when naming the London eatery.

Qique Dacosta with Ximo Puig this Tuesday.

by Simon Russell

Quique was introduced by Valencian President Ximo Puig at the forum where he also talked about his role as a hunger ambassador, believing worldwide hunger could be eradicated with the will of the countries affected.

IF proposed plans by ferry company Balearia are passed, there could soon be a third way to get to Ibiza rather than the current boat or plane. The company are hoping to build a helipad on the roof of their Denia port terminal, a proposal which is currently with the public for a 30 day consultation period. Many have argued for a while that as the capital of the Marina Alta Denia should have its own helipad which could prove invaluable in land or

sea rescues. However the island hopping element for tourism is a new idea. The roof of the terminal is the preferred location but the end of the boarding pontoon or the roof of Balearias giant Denia warehouse are both also possibilities. If the proposal goes ahead the firm plans to dismantle and reinstall the existing helipad onboard one of its vessels, the MS Regina Baltica.

Daily market for the summer THE Javea Port craft market moves to the evenings from 15 June. Located at the end of Avenida Jaime 1, the new market replaces the Sunday

jewellery, clothing, toys, sculptures, bags, belts and artwork. The evening market will run every day during the summer months and, after the weather

cools down, the Sunday morning stalls will return in the autumn. For more information call 639 979 678 – English is spoken if needed.

Montgo fire risk reviewed AS in the last few years, all concerned parties have met to assess and review the risk of fires at the Montgo Natural Park prior to the warmer months. The Guardia Civil, firefighters, Civil Protection, the Park Brigade and various local councillors as well as the mayor of Javea were all in attendance.

by Simon Russell

It has agreed that once again the park will be split into sectors with groups responsible for safety in their own area while schedules have been drawn up and volunteers allocated. All the various protocols are set to come into effect from 1 June.

Buoys zone SIX new buoys have been installed in the sea off Moraira’s El Portet Beach, closeto the Cap d’or. The ecological buoys help protect the endangered Mediterranean tapeweed on the seabed there while still allowing and even helping marine activities. The

buoys are bright red and can be used as moorings for boats of 12 metres or less. Mayor Carlos Linares went to see the new additions for himself and heard from the professional dive crew who put them in place about the role they play in helping preserve the seabed.

Perfect for families JAVEA is on a shortlist of the best six beaches in Spain as compiled by a well-known travel company. HomeAway, a rental site very popular in both the UK and Spain, has put together its best six Family Friendly coastal, urban and rural destinations. The list was based on customer ratings on safety, seawater quality, cleanliness and other actors. The firm are holding an

on-line vote to determine the overall best in each category, with the other five resorts in the coastal list being Cabo de Palos (Murcia), Cambrils (Tarragona), Conil de la Frontera (Cadiz), Isla Cristina (Huelva) and Torremolinos (Malaga). Valencia is on the city short list along with San Sebastian, Barcelona, Madrid, Granada and Salamanca.

THE Guardia Civil have uncovered Spain’s largest ever synthetic drugs laboratory, in the usually quiet Marina Alta town of Teulada. The lab was producing five kilos a day of methamphetamine – commonly known as crystal meth and made famous by the Breaking Bad TV series where a chemistry teacher becomes an unlikely drug baron by producing high grade methamphetamine. The raid was carried out last Wednesday and six people have been arrested in Teulada, Lliber and Moraira along with 432 kilos of ecstasy and 337 kilos of crystal meth. There was also seven tons of processing materials seized; the total

by Simon Russell

haul had an estimated street value of one hundred million euros. The raid came after an operation that originally focused on heroin production. This led investigators to believe that other drugs were being produced and eventually led them to the raided site. This was a partly submerged bunker that was originally a farm building. The rural setting was chosen to avoid suspicion about the amount of activity in the building. As the material used to process the drugs is highly flammable, the Guardia were supported by specialist personnel from Europol who will dismantle the equipment safely.

Deadly tree virus spreading THE xylella fastidiosa virus which has seen the destruction of thousands of almond, olive and citrus trees in the area continues to spread. Four Marina Alta municipalities, Alcalali, Benissa, Lliber and Xalo are now classed as badly affected while Beniarda, Benifato, Callosa d’en Sarria, Confrides and Tarbena in the Marina Baixa also have serious outbreaks. However there is evidence that the spread is slowing down and some areas remain clear of the disease, which is spread by insects. The Generalitat has ordered the destruction of infected trees and plants, something which has sparked outrage from many farmers in the area. Last Friday 500 people turned out in Benissa to protest about the measures, saying healthy as well as diseased trees are being destroyed unnecessarily.

IF playing the piano is your forte, you still have until 31 May to sign up for the Vila de Xabia International Piano Competition. Aimed at competent musicians hoping to gain further recognition or start out on their career, there are also various junior categories, starting with the under nine’s.

The competition itself takes place on 28 June to 1 July at Portal de Clot and the jury will be made up of five renowned pianists. The event is sponsored by bodies including the Javea Rotary Club and the Town Council. For further information go to www.cipvx.org

11 Refugees rescued from boat off Altea Coastguards from the Mirfak Maritime Rescue intercepted a boat carrying eleven illegal immigrants after it collided with a yacht in seas off the coast of Altea during the early hours of last Tuesday morning. In the minor collision, which occurred around 4.30am approximately thirty miles out at sea, three of the refugees fell overboard. Two of them managed to climb back on board their own boat, whilst the remaining victim was rescued and taken onboard

the other vessel involved in the accident, a yacht by the name of ‘Wilma’. The yacht’s skipper immediately alerted coastguards, who arrived on the scene to rescue the occupants of the refugee boat and carry

them ashore at Altea Port. The refugees who were assisted on landing by a team of Red Cross volunteers, received no injuries during the incident, although one was treated for symptoms of mild hypothermia. Maritime rescue officers believe the refugees boat was part of a convoy

of three, with the other two managing to avoid detection and unload their passengers ashore on the Benidorm beaches of Poniente and Almadraba. Police in the resort are now searching for what they understand to be around a dozen occupants of these boats.

Four arrested in Benidorm British bar drugs raid

Employees from a popular British bar in the centre of Benidorm were arrested and detained in custody after a surprise drugs raid last week. Around fifty National Police officers, including agents from the regional drugs squad, entered the premises last Friday afternoon acting on a tip off that drugs were being stored and distributed from the bar. The busy bar was cleared of customers and sealed off before the officers began a search of the building and the four staff who were working at the time. During the operation agents uncovered 64 bags of cocaine carefully prepared for sale and distribution plus 400 erectile dysfunction tablets and around 6000 euros of cash. The raid was planned after police received information suggesting that

by James Hill

illegal drugs were being supplied to members of the public by staff in an ‘over the counter’ operation, at times using a side window onto the street, where customers could purchase the drugs without actually entering the premises. After completing the operation, four members of staff who were working in the bar at the time were taken into custody pending charges. The bar owners, who were not present during the raid, were allowed to reopen the business immediately and continue trading as normal with replacement staff. Police reports show, the four detainees, three men One of the suspects and one woman, were aged between 32 and 51 from the was released overnight Czech Republic, UK and the without charges, whilst the remaining three, who were Netherlands.

SOME residents in the Barraca de la Barraca area of Javea are suspicious about the sudden dying off of several eucalyptus trees on public land there. The trees were well established, being around 40 years old with access to water from a ravine but appear to have dried up and died overnight. Many think it is not a coincidence that the trees impede the views of some new luxury villas that are being built, with a clear view adding to the value of housing. Four years ago trees in the area were knocked down after blocking the view of a new €2 million villa. This was done after permission to clear the trees had been refused, but the contractor began felling them anyway.

M iguel Ángel Jiménez

"The Most Interesting Man in the World"

M

iguel Ángel Jiménez from the first round of the 2014 Masters, wearing his trademark aviator sunglasses, is just one more example of why some compare him to "The Most Interesting Man in the World" featured in the Dos Equis commercials. We're revisiting this piece, from Masters week 2014, on Miguel Angel Jimenez today in honour of his 54th birthday. To fellow pro golfers, Miguel Angel Jimenez is known as "The Mechanic" for his love of high-performance vehicles like his red Ferrari. To the rest of us who follow the game, he's become known as "The World's Most Interesting Golfer" because of the numerous similarities to "The World's Most Interesting Man" from the Dos Equis commercials. You can't help but smile when you look at Jimenez. He's a man with his own style, the red, curly ponytail under the PING hat and the aviator shades and, of course, the fine cigar and glass of Rioja that seem to occupy each hand after he signs his scorecard. It's hard to say when exactly the comparisons started. The ads made their debut in 2006 in the United States, but it would have certainly taken time to become the well-known part of pop culture it is today. GolfChannel. com's Jason Sobel, made the reference in a blog while at ESPN, covering the 2009 Open Championship. Jimenez held the first-round lead at Turnberry. That fictional character played by actor Jonathan Goldsmith in the Dos Equis commercials is known for the outlandish things he does. He enjoys fine cigars. His drink of choice -- naturally -- is Dos Equis beer. Overall, he seems to enjoy life more than anyone else. "He's an enigma" We dug up an interview from www.

cigaraficionado.com from 2011. In the piece, agent Chubby Chandler (who represents Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood among others), had this to say of Jimenez: "He's a man of his own and everyone appreciates him. He lives his life and plays the game the way he wants to. He never rushes anything, he savours everything. He just inhales life, and he exudes it. I've never known someone more comfortable in his own skin than Miguel." What's better than that? "It is important, no, to love what you are doing?” asks Jimenez. "It is important to enjoy the things that life brings you. I always know that when I start to play golf, that this is what I would like to do. I become good enough to be successful and have many good things for my life." Right then, Jimenez picks up the reporter’s tape recorder from the table and holds it close to his mouth, like a microphone: "I just want

to say that golf is a beautiful game and it has given me a beautiful life." During the 2013 Open Championship, Sobel asked Jimenez if he was aware of his comparisons to the World's Most Interesting Man. Jimenez provided this fantastic, insightful response: "I don't compare myself with anyone. I try to live my life and enjoy myself. I think people ought to try to do the same thing." To recap: Jimenez loves fast cars, fine cigars, fine wine, has won 20 events on the European Tour, has played on four European Ryder Cup teams, today joined Fred Couples and Ben Hogan in the Masters record books with his third-round 66 that tied for low score by a player 50 or older in the tournament and, overall, loves life. It makes you wonder: Maybe those Dos Equis commercials are loosely based on Jimenez.

'That's entirely possible', commented his friend. 'Not when I had his golf ball in my pocket', retorted Padraig with finality.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA 40

The Effects of Salt Salt has many adverse effects on gardens. This includes the ‘poisoning’ of soil by the build-up of salts but this doesn’t seem to be a problem locally - at least horticulturally. Salt spray from the sea is a different matter altogether and may be the cause of problems even though you have not realised it. Salt carried on the wind can cause damage much further inland than is usually suspected. For instance, when driving in Cornwall, you will probably have noticed that roadside hedges a kilometre or more from the sea will appear to be bent away from the wind. It is not just the wind, however, the salt that it carries kills or retards growth on the seaward side while having less effect on the protected side producing the characteristic shape. There are two sides to dealing with the salt problem – one is to grow plants which are resistant to salt and the other is to use such plants to provide shelter to more tender specimens. One incredibly useful shrub, much grown locally, is

Pittosporum tobira or Mock Orange (one of at least six plants referred to by this name). It’s tough leathery leaves and remarkable drought resistance makes it particularly well suited to coastal regions. As with

most drought resistant plants, its it will manage in shade. Clipping drought resistance is due to its abil- (or pinching out in the case of the ity to find water rather than exist variety ‘nana’) is best done following flowering - around late June and it can be clipped into an excellent hedge. This is a photograph taken at Javea’s Cala Blanca earlier this month showing a plant flowering beautifully without any protection growing only a few metres from the sea. It will grow much taller than this and looks good together with that other staple of coastal gardening, the oleander. This will grow to a similar height (but, because of its vigour, is rather more difficult to keep compact) and comes in several colours although it lacks the superb scent of the pittosporum. Having said that, many Americans refer to it having a beauwithout it, therefore, if grown in a tiful scent – maybe it is pot keep it well watered. These two plants could well form the basis for creating wind and salt screens behind which rather less robust plantings could be made. This subject seems to be worth following up, so perhaps more another time.

Can I Have a Blood Test? This is a question that we are asked many times in the clinic, either from ‘walk in’ patients or telephone enquiries. The answer is always ‘Yes, but which test do you want?’ Often the answer is ‘I want to be tested for everything’ but unbeknown to the patient we have over 3,000 blood tests available! It is therefore obviously not feasible to ‘test for everything’ as the patient would need to give a gallon of blood then take out a mortgage to pay the laboratory fee!! On as serious note, when a patient requests blood tests we question the patient about why they want tests: are they regular blood tests that they need? Are they diabetic? Have they had previous abnormal results that need monitoring? Are they suffering symptoms or have particular concerns? etc.etc. Sometimes it is very easy to find out exactly what the patient needs, other patients we would refer to the Family Doctor for advice rather than going ahead with needless tests causing the patient extra expense. Of course some people are ‘fit and well’ and are requesting blood tests as part of health screening (which is a fantastic thing to do!!). For these patients we have special ‘packages’ of blood tests which work out far cheaper for the patient than randomly having a few tests at a time.

Health check blood packages include:

Urea and Electrolytes: this looks at your kidney function and is especially useful to monitor patients taking certain medications or following a change in medication. Lipid Profile: 4 tests including ‘good’ cholesterol, ‘bad’ cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. This is a test that more and more health conscious people are asking for. Glucose: to test for diabetes. Remember the undiagnosed million walking around! Liver Function Tests: what they say on the tin! LFT’s will show us how your liver is functioning. Some people do have specific concerns about their liver and choose just to have LFT’s. Thyroid Function Tests: if a person’s thyroid gland is either underactive or overactive this (In different ways) can make them feel pretty rotten. This is a good test for people with varied symptoms but generally feeling ‘not on top form’. Prostate Specific Antigen: commonly known as PSA which men over the age of 40yrs. (certainly 50yrs.) should seriously think about having.

Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 deficiency Full Blood Count: this looks at your red is common problem (especially in vegetarians cells, white cells and platelets. We can learn a lot and the over 60’s) and is responsible for many symptoms of ill health and generally feeling ‘under the weather’. So, when people ask ‘Can I Have a Blood Test?’……Yes of course! We just need to make sure it’s the right test for you!

High tech home buyer BANKING giant BBVA have launched a new app that helps potential home buyers with every aspect of their purchase. The Valora View tool is the first of its kind in the European banking sector and is known as an “augmented reality” app. Firstly, if you point the app at a building, it will tell you if any apartments in the block are for sale with BBVA’s idealista web portal. It then tells you information about the area and even the specific building. The app also provides the user with recommended prices for renting and buying, as well as recommending if you would be better off renting or buying dependant on your financial situation and other factors. The “heat indicator” indicates the most

by Simon Russell

expensive and cheapest parts of a specific area. The additional expenses post sale can also be calculated such as monthly mortgage or rental, utility bills, insurance or even any property reforms you may want to make.

Benitachell Bowls Local team most win premier improved in Europe 20 knockout

Benitachell Bowls Club have just won the coveted Premier Twenty knockout competition, beating San Luis of Torrevieja in the final. This was a series of tough matches in which a team of 20 players, ten players compete at home whilst ten play away. Our picture shows the Premier 20 squad. 2017 – 2018 also saw a fantastic success for the Benitachell Lions team, who after a long season have just won the Northern League Championship for an amazing ninth year in succession. The club, affectionately known as the B.B.C., was established in 1987, and is the only independent bowls club on the Costa Blanca, being owned and run entirely by its members. Situated in a beautiful and peaceful setting, it boasts an excellent eight rink green. There is a comfortable clubhouse where members and their guests can relax after a match and enjoy a drink and a meal. This is also

the main venue of a busy social scene, with numerous events held throughout the year. As well as club days three times a week for players of all abilities the club is represented in the Costa Blanca Winter League, with matches both north and south of Alicante throughout the season. The BBC also enters three “Big Cats” teams in the Northern League Lions, Tigers and Jaguars. Known as a friendly club, B.B.C. is always happy to welcome new members. Turner drawn Aussie pairs 16th/17th May, 2018 20 Teams of 2 players took part in this drawn Aussie Pairs competition. The format was 4 groups of 5 teams competing in a Round Robin format of 8 ends. The winners of each group then played in a semi-final knockout to arrive at 2 teams in the Final. And what a nailbiter of a final it was, the protagonists were Brenda Burgess and David Ings versus Jean Gullidge and Doug Bacon with Brenda and Dave taking an early lead of 5 shots to 1, by end 7 Doug and Jean had managed to sneak ahead by 1 shot

VALENCIA CF were statistically the most improved top flight team in Europe this season, after gaining 27 more points this year than their disastrous 2016-17

to 6-5, by end 8 Brenda and Dave drew back to a 6-6 shot draw. This necessitated an extra end to decide who would lift the trophy and Brenda and Dave prevailed to win the competition by just 1 shot, 7-6. The trophy and first prize of 75 Euros each was presented by the Sponsor of the event, Andrew Turner of Turner Insurance Specialists of Javea, this is the second year he has sponsored the competition, so many thanks Andrew. The runners-up also received a prize of 50E each. The beaten semi-

finalists of Dave Carvath and Jane Baron along with Brian Taylor and Nigel Thomas all took home 25E apiece. As well as the very generous prize money, Andrew also donated a 100E voucher for petrol or diesel in the shape of a free draw for all participating players, the lucky winner was Jill Nobbs. This was a well organised competition thanks to Mike and Mary O’Neill. The ambience over the two days made this a memorable and very enjoyable event for all participants.

A very beautiful day at Oliva Nova saw a small section of Pego Golf Society playing a Stableford game. The course was being hollow tined with only 9 holes playable and therefore no official game had been planned, with all Members free to arrange their own games. The results of our small group of 11 players were as follows: Joint winners each with 33 points Colin Foster and John Nicol Joint second each with 32 points were

Patrick Lynch and John Evans. Not particularly good scores considering the course was in superb condition, probably the best it has been for a long time. Our four players were perhaps put off by the perennial problem of slow play, virtually every hole saw us waiting to play our shots. Back to normal next week May 29th with a Team Game, if any guests wish to join us, subject to handicap contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.comhttps
