British Man shot dead by Spanish Police THE identity of a British national killed by Spanish police in a Malaga hotel has been identified as Sean Hercules, aged 39 and originally from Leeds. The chain of events leading to the man’s death started on Monday morning in Puerto Banus when there were reports

of a man fleeing a traffic accident with a weapon. It is thought that he was known to the authorities and was traced to a hotel in Cancelada, close to Estepona in the province of Malaga. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Property vs Investment Portfolios Investing in property has been popular in past years, with many people buying property to rent out as an investment. The attractions of property are clear. The By Tracy Storer UK sector has Senior Partner Chorus Financial historically delivered a compelling rental yield, combined with an attractive level of capital growth over the long term. However, property is not right for everyone and here I highlight some of the main factors that should be considered. 1.-Age – Once you really start getting to the later years of life, your risks start to become greater. You no longer have the luxury of investing for the long-term. For example, if you’re 80 years old, and invest in property during a property boom, in 2 years time the market may start to dip. The market may recover after 10 years and put you back into high profits. But you may no

longer be around to reap the benefits. So essentially, the older you are, the shorter your opportunity becomes for a long-term investment. 2.-Cost - The costs involved in buy-tolet can quickly stack up and erode the returns. Buying costs, including legal fees, agency fees and survey fees, all of which are usually paid upfront need to be considered and in Spain this can be somewhere around 15%! Then you will need to find tenants or advertise the property for holiday lets. Then you have the ongoing costs, which could include redecoration and repairs, gas and electrical appliance maintenance, buildings and contents insurance, legal insurance and the costs of complying with the various landlord regulations. 3.-Tax - You should also ensure you have a firm grasp of the tax implications of purchasing a buying property as this will cause a further limiton returns. In Spain the purchasing tax is 10%, so essentially you are 10% down from day one, but there are other ongoing taxes to consider. If you have a property you rent out in Spain and live in Spain yourself, you will have to declare the income on your Spanish tax return (declaracion de la renta de las personas fisicas) every year and then of course when

you sell the property you will have to consider the possible capital gains tax. 4.-Lack of diversification - If you own your current home, investing in a second could leave you heavily exposed to the property market. If property prices falter, your wealth could be significantly affected. The property market is also highly illiquid, meaning a property can sit on the market for months, or even years, before a buyer is found. If you need to access your money quickly, you could be forced to accept a lower offer than you could achieve given more time and even then, this could take some time. We should also take into consideration the location of the property. Unlike the UK the rental yields in Spain can be as little as 2-3% gross and if you take into consideration the buying fees, often it can take over 5 years just to break even! So what if buying a property is not a suitable investment for you? What are the alterative options? Number one, leaving money in your bank can be a bad idea if you want to achieve growth. UK inflation is currently at 2.5% so unless your bank are paying you 2.5% interest (which is very unlikely) you savings are depreciating daily.

So what about investing? Many people get put off by that word. They think that it is only for the experienced or for big risk takers but it really isn’t. The key to investing is getting the right advice, making sure that all of your needs and objectives are considered and that everything is explained in a simple manner that you understand. At Chorus Financial, we do just that. If a client comes to me and purchasing a property is the right thing for them, I’ll advise them of that – and if it isn’t? I’ll sit down and talk through the various options available, whether they just want to grow their money at the same rate of inflation or they are more aggressive investors looking for bigger growth, we make sure that it is right for them. If you are confused about what investments are right for you, give me a call on 693 107 044 or email t.storer@chorusfinancial.es Chorus Financial is a trading style of TOURBILLON LIMITED Registered Address: Trinity House Ocean Village Avenue - Gibraltar - GX11 1AA Tourbillon Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Commission (Gibraltar). Armed Brit killed in hotel shoot-out Sean Hercules shot dead by Spanish Police

by Simon Russell

FROM FRONT PAGE They entered the hotel, confirmed as the Autosole, and when they went to Hercules room he opened fire. The officers returned fire and the suspect died as a result of wounds received. Spanish authorities said that he had a police record for drugs and weapons offences and he had also spent time in jail in the UK for shooting a man outside a Leeds nightclub as well as armed robbery. The National Police carried out the operation and their spokesman said “Officers came under fire when they went to arrest a man and were obliged to use their weapons to repel the attack, resulting in the death of the gunman. Two firearms and four cartridges were found next to the body of the man, a British national.” A Foreign Office spokesman has said they are in contact with the deceased man’s family.

British boy found motionless in hotel pool FROM FRONT PAGE Mystery surrounds the exact details of the incident, which occurred in the early afternoon of last Sunday at the complex formerly known as the Magic Excalibur, situated between Benidorm and neighbouring resort, Playa d’Albir. Unconfirmed reports from witnesses, suggest that although lifeguards were on duty at the resort pool at the time, the boy was actually recovered by two other guests, one of whom was a doctor from Madrid and another from the medical profession, who administered cpr until paramedics arrived. As news spread of the tragic incident on social media groups linked to Benidorm, a Facebook appeal was posted in an effort to gain more information from potential witnesses. Posting on the Benidorm & Costa Blanca News & Information Forum group Tracey Dwyer urged users to come forward: “ U R G E N T I N F O R M AT I O N REQUIRED: We are urgently looking for p i c t u r e s / videos taken in the MAGIC ROBIN HOOD on 09/09/18

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Magic Robin Hotel also posted comments regarding safety procedures and protocol at the pool which is manned by lifeguards employed by an outside company. “We are compiling statements from clients who were at that time and all agree that the first intervention was made by our lifeguard. “When the clients who declared themselves to be nurses and a doctor appeared, they took control

of the situation because according to the protocol they have priority due to their profession. “At all times we offered our help to the child and the family. We have 4 lifeguards in the main pool in addition to others in the slides, and now we have increased them with one more. And replying to another poster with the message: “We understand what the family and friends must be going through right now, since thousands of families come to our resort every year and our purpose is to see their children running and playing and having fun, that is the “magic” spirit. “We will give you all our help and support and any information or anything other clients could have seen at that moment will be of vital importance, and you can send it to: helpmagicrobinhood@ gmail.com However, other posters on the thread alleged that the lifeguards were more interested in chatting to guests and were inexperienced in delivering cpr to the victim. Blair is still in a critical condition but a Facebook post by his grandmother revealed that he is awake and attempting to talk.

Ryanair warning

BUDGET carrier Ryanair and hundreds of thousands of its customers across Europe have been warned to brace themselves for “the biggest strike action the company has ever seen” which could at the end of the month. Spanish as well as Dutch, Italian, Belgian and Portuguese representatives of pilots, cabin crew and ground handling workers issued a joint statement in which they said no real progress had been made on their demands since a pan-European strike over the summer. The statement emerged after seven unions from the five countries held, what they described as, an “historic” meeting in Rome. There are suggestions they may ask their fellow Ryanair unions in

their countries to join with them in the action. The union bodies also claimed the current executive board of directors at the company had demonstrated that they were “incapable of having meaningful talks with unions”.

Four year old lifesaver

Irish-based staff already have a deal with Ryanair, but a major disruption to services is expected, with the strike day expected to be in the last week of this month.

Students being priced out

MANY students starting their studies at Elche´s Miguel Hernandez University this week are being forced to commute in from far afield due to the exorbitant cost of renting

in the city combined with low availability. Many are choosing to live in coastal resorts such as Santa Pola, where renting is very expensive in July and August but prices drop

away once the school years starts. What rentals are available in Elche are only staying on the market for a day or two in many instances with students being forced to

CIRCARTE, an international circus festival which never uses animals, is setting up it’s big top across Alicante province from 14 to 29 September and Denia is the venue for three of the activities for the first time. On 16 September there is “Circ d’Aci”, a spectacular gala. This features jugglers, acrobats and trapeze artists among other things and will be a mixture of traditional and contemporary circus acts. The venue is the Denia Social Centre Auditorium from 7pm and entrance is free. The following day the activity moves outside to Calle

La Via and will also feature a circus skills workshop for kids of four years and up (preregistration required). This runs from 5pm to 6.30pm and is followed by a show performed by the Mumusic Company, a mix of circus skills, dancing, theatre and live music. Other venues across the province include El Campello, Alicante City, Sant Joan d’Alacant, San Vicent del Raspeig (the university) and Mutxamel. AMBULANCE staff are saying that a four year old boy may have saved his mother´s life by calling the emergency services after she had collapsed. in the Carrus area. Due to the amount of residents who have access to the terrace it is proving difficult to trace the person responsible who may even have been a holidaymaker or visitor. The dog’s corpse was removed

Decision makers Cruising to success

ALICANTE has four big cruise liners coming into port over the course of this week, bringing an estimated 7,000 tourists to the city who will spend about €600,000 based on previous figures. The cruise sector has had an excellent 2018, with visitor numbers up by 10% to about 100,000. The biggest liner due this week is the “Celebrity Eclipse” which has 3,000 passengers

and is stopping in Alicante for the first time. As numbers increase the infrastructure that transports them around the city and to other towns in the region improves. Others prefer to make their way around on their own steam and there are several bars, restaurants and food stalls that stand to benefit from their spending.

REDUCED tax on basic food products and reducing income tax for selfemployed people are two of the decisions agreed upon by socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Iglesias, the leader of the leftwing Podemos party. The minority PSOE socialist administration needs Podemos votes in Congress to keep them in power, and

by Alex Trelinski

Podemos helped to sweep Mariano Rajoy and his Partido Popular government out of power in the spring. A meeting between Sánchez and Iglesias agreed to cut IVA on basic necessities, although it is not yet clear whether this will involve reducing the 4% bottom rate or adding more

goods and services to the 4% bracket which are currently in the 10% mid-band or 21% top-levels. They reached the ‘beginnings of an agreement’ to increase income taxes for people earning more than €140,000 a year, or €10,000 a month, which Iglesias says ‘is not going to hurt them much’. Income tax will reduce for the self-employed on

a sliding scale, with those invoicing less than a given amount – expected to be that of the minimum wage, currently €858.55 per month – being tax-exempt. It has not been revealed how the scale will work, or whether it will directly affect retentions or merely be recalculated when quarterly or annual declarations are filed.

Ready to rock in 2019

EARLY details have been announced this week about next year´s Montgo Rock music festival, fast becoming one of the premier events for rock fans in Spain. The venue will be at La Fontana, just off the beach, and the dates are the 10th and 11th of May. Season passes and tickets are already on sale (see www. montgorock.es) and range from €25 for a basic day pass to €105 to a weekend pass including camping and prime views of the stage plus dinner and drink. The missing ingredient of course is the line up, and announcements will begin to be made as that is finalised.

Awash with plastic

Animal magic LUCKY visitors to Valencia’s Bioparc last week were treated to a double dose of drama. First of all they were fortunate enough to witness a zebra giving birth in the replica savannah area of the park where they live. The baby appeared to be perfectly healthy when born but after becoming separated from the umbilical cord tumbled into the nearby lake. Gamekeepers had been letting nature take it’s course up to this point but now felt they had to intervene and a rescue mission began to save the new born. A team of two were quickly able to remove the baby from the water where it was returned to it’s relieved mother who started the cleaning process. Spontaneous applause broke out from the watching crowd who came away with a story – and probably several photos of the event. The foal is a male and mother and baby are both doing well the Bioparc confirmed.

A recent report states that Spain dumps 126 tons of plastic into the Mediterranean each day, making it the second largest polluter of the Med after Turkey. The WWF findings goes on to say that 95% of all waste in the Mediterranean is plastics, much of it generated by the tourist industries that

line the coast. Overall Spain was the fourth highest user of plastics across Europe, consuming 10% of the total for the continent. Plastic bottles are the most common, many of which end up polluting the oceans. The report states that the Mediterranean is fast reaching saturation point for

waste and has one of the highest concentrations of plastic waste per square kilometre across the planet. The WWF says that as with most European countries better waste management is needed in Spain, particularly with regards to recycling, use of landfills and the reliance on single use plastics.

Benidorm wins TV choice Best Comedy Award by Andy Mansell

Just two months after being axed from their schedules, ITV’s longest running comedy show, Benidorm has won Best Comedy at the prestigious, TV Choice award ceremony, held last Sunday. The BAFTA award winning comedy series, filmed on location in and around the resort, made household names of the actors who played the loveable cast of larger than life characters. However, ITV bosses, decided to pull the plug, after the tenth season of the

record breaking, prime time show, despite its regular appearances towards the top of the TV listings. At the time, creator and writer of Benidorm, DerrenLitten, admitted the decision was not unexpected, but likened the crew to one big family, so it was not only him that the cancellation affected. “What people forget, is that we are a big employer in the area”, he explained, “Not just the actors and film crew, who have come back regularly for four months work every spring over the last 11 years, but all the back up team of local technicians, drivers, catering companies and extras who come back year after year.” However, the TV Choice Awards are voted for by

Death in the skies

A British national died last Saturday on a UK flight destined for Ibiza. The Jet2 plane had taken off from Manchester in the evening on it’s way to the Balearic island. When it was clear that the man’s condition was a medical emergency the plane was diverted to France’s Toulouse airport. He was

viewers, and Benidorm triumphed over fellow nominees The Big Bang Theory, The Keith & Paddy Picture Show and Not Going Out on the BBC. It was a fact show creator DerrenLitten was quick to point out when he picked up the gong - shortly after tweeting: ‘Pissed already. Hope we don’t win because I don’t know my own name right now.’ He told the audience at the ceremony: “This is awkward. We’ve just been cancelled. The show has just been cancelled.” Litten, then likened the award to being sacked from your job and then being recognised as employee of the month. Despite being cancelled by ITV, the sitcom has been turned into a live show featuring many of the by Simon Russell

original cast, which kicked off a UK tour at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle last week and continues well into 2019. In another piece of good news for the writer, the pilot episode of his new baby, a 30 minute situation comedy set in another famous seaside town, but this time in England, has been

commissioned by the BBC. Fronted by former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly, comedian Jason Manford and veteran actress Stephanie Cole, ‘Scarborough’, which is set to air late next year, “follows the lives and loves of a small handful of residents in Scarborough, the sometime

sunny beach resort in North Yorkshire, who meet most nights in the local karaoke bar where they swap gossip and sing 80’s classics”. Sound familiar? Well, if the show is even half as successful as its predecessor, the BBC have a sure fire winner on their hands.

Beach lightning strike

TWO people were injured when lightning struck the beach at Bellereguard, near Oliva, last Friday. One of the pair, a 20 year old male, suffered a suspected cardiac arrest and had to receive

emergency medical treatment on the sands, including pulmonary resuscitation. It is believed that the treatment was successful and he was transferred tom Gandia Hospital. The other victim

was a 50 year old female who suffered leg pain from the strike but no serious effects. The incidents happened at around noon when violent storms moved up the Valencian coastline.

Pet poisoning case drags on

The people get their say Victory for public right of way

by Simon Russell

THE authorities have admitted that they are no closer to solving the multiple dog poisoning incidents that shook pet owners in Benissa earlier this year. Nine dogs were killed and at least five poisoned but survived in rural Benissa over March and April. Seprona, the animal protection unit of the Guardia Civil, admit they are still awaiting the results of toxicology tests that are currently with a Denia

laboratory before the matter can proceed. A local politician, Carles Mulet, called the delays “scandalous” and also wanted to know what was being done to ensure the situation wasn´t repeated. Seprona have suspects for the incident in mind after toxins were found at sheds used by hunters. However the toxicology results are needed before any charges can be considered.

Running to fight cancer DETAILS of the annual Oliva Cancer Run have been announced in a press conference this week. Arranged in co-ordination with Spanish cancer charity AECC, Oliva Triathlon Club and the town hall, the event will take place on 7 October when many other towns will

be holding similar events. As part of the fund raising shirts will be on sale each Friday until the event at a stall in front of the indoor market. The race itself will have two categories, an eight kilometre course for runners and a four kilometre circuit for those who prefer to walk.

Treated like pigs

A landowner in Pedreguer is facing charges after a number of Vietnamese pot bellied pigs were found on his property in what authorities have described as appalling conditions. The

animals were thin enough that the ribs on the normally corpulent creatures were showing through and a vet said they were close to death through starvation. There were also two dogs

there, both in poor condition and the outside area where all the animals were kept was said to be strewn with rubbish and waste. The situation has been publicly denounced by Addama, the

Wall of water

A passenger on a boat off the coast between Denia and Oliva last week took spectacular video footage of a giant water spout in the distance. Spotted about ten nautical miles out to sea last Thursday, the footage has been released by Alicante University’s Climatology Laboratory. Despite their fierce appearance the spouts are

rarely a danger to shipping or marine life. They are very rare outside of the tropics but climatologists predict they will become more common in other parts as the seas heat up as a result of global warming. Waterspouts are usually formed as rain clouds develop over very warm water and can be up to two kilometres wide.

British man found dead at bus station THE BODY of a 52-year-old British man was discovered in a public park next to Cartagena bus station last week, after he was barred from boarding a bus earlier in the day because he was drunk.

Cartagena local police were called to help the British national after he was turned away, but he refused their assistance. He is believed to have died of natural causes.

Free Krava Maga self-defence course for women

Females from age seven upwards are invited to attend a free course, where they can learn simple selfdefence techniques to help them should they ever find themselves in threatening and dangerous situations. The KravaMaga course, will run from 10:00h to 12:00h, next Sunday,

by Andy Mansell

September 16, at the Pau Gasol Pavilion in Alfas d’el Pi. This free personal defense course aimed at women, will be taught by KravMaga instructor and bullying expert TomásLópez, accompanied

by his entire team, focusing on classic situations women often find themselves facing, such as sexual aggression or scenes of gender violence. KravaMaga is a combat system that was developed in Israel in the 1940s, designed to defend a person from real day-today aggressions, that could

happen in real life. It teaches women, according to López, “to be alert to possible dangers and be able to get out as quickly as possible from any aggression using the weak points of the attacker.” The advantage of KravMaga is that everyone can learn it, because anyone

is susceptible to aggression. “The important thing is to know how to defend oneself,” says López, who stresses that you can start practicing from age 7. “It is a very interesting course, because through simple movements you learn very effective techniques that allow us to

face with greater confidence a possible aggression, either on the street or at home,” says the instructor, who has received around 200 enquiries from women wishing to attend. Women and girls wishing to attend on Sunday should show up at the venue before 10.00h.

Back to school Across the desert at last! in an old banger

MANY parents across the region will be breathing a sigh of relief as the majority of kids in the Alicante province return to school this Monday, 10 September. After a holiday lasting about 10 weeks, most schools will still have shorter days in September due to the heat, before the timetable proper begins in October. Parents will also have to have the annual headache of finding money for new school books, usually costing well

Clearing the way to safety

by Matthew Richards

THE Alicante Diputacion has awarded a grant of €40,000 to clear the Barranc del Vicari on the outskirts of the municipality of Benitatchell. The area is considered a major fire risk when vegetation and other rubbish builds up, and although well away from the main town centre is close to the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation. The mountainous

landscape has now become extremely neglected, with overgrown trees and shrubs increasing the risks of fire and flooding. Works will also be done in the Calistros area which was largely burnt out in the fires of two years ago. Environment Councillor Manolo Segarra said that a pleasing benefit of completing the works was that the hills would be better opened up for hikers.

Wheelchair fall leads to death

A woman who fell out of her wheelchair when leaving a church in Seville has died, her family confirmed. The 85 year old was being pushed by her son as she left Nuestra Senora de la Fuente church and the chair overturned on the access ramp. She had been in hospital since but died there this week. Questions have been asked about the safety of the ramp; however the mayor has asked that people await the results of the autopsy to confirm that she died of her injuries and not of natural causes.

A brother and sister from the Marina Alta are taking part in the challenge of driving the route of the famous Dakar Rally – but piloting a car that is more than 20 years old and only using a map and compass to navigate. Carlos Gil and his sister Lorena, from Teulada, say this is not just about the challenge but about building links between the Marina Alta and Morocco, especially the remote desert villages enroute. The race is part of Uniraid 2019 and starts next March in Tangiers. Teulada City Council have offered the siblings their full support and this week Mayor Carlos Linares led a presentation of the challenge. Carlos and Lorena are collecting

material to donate to some aiming to win and will be of the poorer villages, happy to finish without including shoes, computers, incident. monitors, clothing, toys, glasses and medicines. 30 kilos can be carried in the car itself and the rest will be distributed by the organisers. They will also be doing presentations at local schools, outlining the mission and are asking local schoolchildren to write letters to their counterparts in Morocco which will be translated into French. Regarding the race itself the pair have said they aren´t

Kidnapper arrested in Benidorm

FRIDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2018

Guardia Civil officers in Benidorm, swooped to arrest a forty two year old man suspected of kidnapping a woman on her way to church last Sunday. The incident occurred around 08.00h, when the sixty year old victim, walking on her way to morning mass in the inland town of Ibi, noticed the suspect staring at her from inside a parked car. As she passed the vehicle, the man, got out of the door and by grabbing her from behind was able to cross her arms to immobilize her and force her into the rear of the car, where she became trapped in the gap between the seats, unable to move. After a terrifying drive of around ten kilometres, he stopped the car and bundled the woman out of the door, but not before he stole all of the money she had on her person, an amount of 30 euros. He then drove off, leaving the woman in the road, where she was picked up by workers from a nearby cafĂŠ, who escorted to her church, where she was subsequently taken to a

health centre for medical examination by friends. The investigating officers were able to verify, through recordings in surveillance cameras in the area, that the woman was disoriented and stunned by the tension of the situation, after leaving the vehicle. Luckily the cries of the victim, who had not stopped screaming during the whole struggle, had drawn the attention of several neighbours, who wrote down the licence plate of the vehicle helping the officers locate where the car was registered and identify the alleged kidnapper. Once identified, the agents, based in Ibi, travelled to Benidorm to arrest the suspect, of Spanish nationality, on charges of illegal detention, robbery with violence and intimidation and of causing injury. He was placed at the disposal of the judicial authority, before finally been released on charges, pending the conclusion of the corresponding trial.

Sex abuse caretaker case starts by

THE trial has started in Alicante Crown Court of a man who it is alleged took advantage of his position as a concierge and maintenance worker to sexually abuse a child. The accused works on an unnamed urbanisation in the Alicante area and was asked by the 14 year old to remove a spider from their

Matthew Richards

apartment as they had a phobia about the creatures. The man agreed but when he was in the property and alone with the child it has been alleged he sexually abused them. The Office of the Prosecutor has requested a sentence of three and half years if a guilty verdict is reached.

Sad start to school year

A teacher at a school in San Vicente del Raspeig died on the first day of the new school year. Jose Tomas Marco was a mathematics teacher at IES Maria Blasco. He had a heart attack in the school car park and was taken to the local

hospital but his death was confirmed later the same day. Jose was a well known local figure, the secretary of the Mutxamel socialist association and an active participant in the town’s Moors and Christian fiestas which started this week.

Incinerated vegetables

A lorry transporting a truck load of vegetables last weekend turned over and then caught fire on the A-7 motorway in Alicante. The vehicle left the A-7 and ended up blocking off a road next to the motorway, the EL-

20. Fortunately the incident happened in the early morning when the road was relatively quiet, although the road was blocked for several hours. Five fire vehicles attended the scene and there were no reports of any injuries.

A SET of 15th Century sculptures have been garishly repainted by an Asturias resident in northern Spain in yet another botched amateur restoration attempt. In one of the previously plain wooden statues, Jesus was given a bright green robe while Mary got a bright pink headscarf and eyeliner. Another statue showed St Peter, now dressed in deep red. They are in a chapel in the hamlet of El

Ranadoiro, where Maria Luisa Menendez, was given permission from the local priest to paint the figurines. “I’m not a professional, and so I painted them as I could, with the colours that looked good to me, and the neighbours liked it,” she said. The Asturias region’s Education Adviser, Genaro Alonso, described it as a “vengeance rather than a restoration”. In June a church in the northern town of Estella

was criticised after it employed an arts and crafts teacher to update a 16thCentury wooden sculpture of St George. Meanwhile the infamous botched restoration of the Ecce Homo fresco in 2012 has since become an attraction in its own right, drawing thousands of visitors to the town of Borja. The art conservation association ACRE has decried the “continued pillaging in our country”.

Performers plea Tourist murder has Market sweep from Players twist in the tail

THE Javea Players are looking for two more performers for their upcoming presentation of the well known musical “My Fair Lady”. They are hoping to find a male singer for the chorus with a tenor or baritone voice. The successful candidate will also be playing some small parts in the play, including Mrs Higgins’ chauffeur, a policeman and various servants. No previous experience is necessary, just a good voice and sense of rhythm as some dancing is involved.

SIX Senegalese men have been arrested for selling counterfeit goods at a Torrevieja area market, after a major operation launched by the Guardia Civil. 30 Guardia officers were involved in the sweep that took place at the popular weekly La Mata market, which switched to a new site at the start of the month. Some agents posed as potential customers, as they confirmed reports filed to them that the illegal hawkers

POLICE investigating the murder of a French tourist in August have arrested her travelling companion in a surprise development. The mystery started on 18 August after a woman’s body was found on a wind farm in Sos del Rey Catolico (Zaragoza), hidden in a secluded area and without documentation. The corpse showed signs of violence and an autopsy confirmed that the probable cause of death was strangulation. Eventually the victim was confirmed as a 54 year old French woman who had been travelling through the area staying at campsites. She had a travelling

Further investigations showed that it appeared the second woman had travelled back to France, posing as her friend and using her credit cards and car. The woman was traced and forensic teams have found blood in the car, indicating this was the scene of the murder. A 58 year old female French national has now been charged with murder, identity theft and fraud. Police have not ruled out further arrests as someone may have been shielding the accused, either in France or Spain.

Tools of the trade catch out thief

THE National Police in Elche have arrested a 23 year old man in connection with a house burglary in July. Their investigation had led them to approach second hand shops and markets to try and identify items taken. These searches turned up a number of tools

which the victim confirmed were stolen from his property. Once the police had identified the person who had passed on the stolen tools, they detained the young man who has also been linked with another robbery around the same time, the theft of two bicycles.

DESPITE it’s size, Denia has the seventh most properties for rent on holiday websites such as Airbnb according to a recent survey. The report by Datahippo said that there are 5,202 Denia rentals listed on Airbnb and similar portals such as HomeAway and Houset. These

“sofa surfing” sites put holidaymakers directly in touch with property owners and have totally changed the face of the holiday rental market completely. Not everyone sees them as a good thing of course, with unregistered lets, increased property prices for locals and some resorts

Pensions News

Final Salary (DB) Pension Transfers

There are still many people in Final Salary (DB) Pension schemes, the good news is that Defined benefit (DB) pension schemes for FTSE 100 organisations have achieved a surplus of £3 billion, moving out of deficit for the first time in 10 years, according to the JLT Employee Benefits monthly index. The index, which tracks the funding position of all UK private sector DB schemes based on the IAS19 numbers disclosed in organisations reports and accounts, shows that the deficit for FTSE 350 schemes has dropped from £43 billion to zero since July 2017. It also registered a drop in the deficit among all UK private sector pension schemes, from £130 billion on 31 July 2017, to £22 billion on 31 July 2018. However for some the flexibilities of transferring to a SIPP or QROPS may be more attractive. These flexibilities include the ability to withdraw funds in

a more ad hoc fashion, greater freedom of investment choice and the ability to pass on 100% of remaining funds to their chosen beneficiaries on death.

SIPPs benefit from increase in pension transfers According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) a record £10.6 billion was transferred from and between UK pension schemes during the first quarter of 2018. This continues the upward trend from 2017 when a total of £36.8 billion was transferred over the course of the year. To put this into context, the figures for 2015 and 2016 were £13.2 billion and £12.8 billion respectively. Figures published by Fintech company Origo suggest that SIPP providers have been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the increase in pension transfer activity. Its data shows transfers to self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs) have increased by 30% over the last year. Origo’s Options Transfer service is used

by more than 95 firms, including the major pension consultancies, life companies, platforms and SIPPs’ providers. Origo estimates the vast majority – around 90% – of pension transfers in the contract market go through its service. Clearly the pension freedoms introduced in April 2015 have played a big role in encouraging the rise in pension transfers to defined-contribution (DC) arrangements. At the same time, low interest rates mean that transfer values can appear extremely generous for those exiting their valuable defined-benefit (DB) schemes.

IMPORTANT

Transferring from a DB scheme is a complex area and requires careful consideration and specialist advice that is specific to the individual’s personal circumstances, objectives and motivations. It may not be the best course of action in every case. If you are considering transferring any type of pension and wish to have

BANANAS ABOUT PLASTICS BRITISH supermarket chain Iceland – who also have a number of stores here in Spain – have announced that they will no longer be selling bananas in plastic packaging. More gender violence protests

MATRIA, the association against violence on women based in Denia, has said that they will now be gathering outside the Town Hall every time there is a gender violence death across Spain. A Matria spokeswoman said “When a woman is murdered, not only do they kill her but her entire environment, often leaving vulnerable children effectively orphaned.” The solemn meetings will always

be held at 7pm in Plaza Ayuntamiento and they ask that members of the public join them to show solidarity with victims and their families. 2017 had the highest recorded amount of gender violence incidents since records began 20 years ago. Prior to that it was not recognised as a separate crime, despite it being seen as an inherent problem in Spanish society tied in with the machismo self image of some males.

Streets of Scooter sharing scheme shame hits brick wall

SOME local residents in Javea are so fed up with the state of the streets and other public areas in the town that they have taken to cleaning them themselves. They say that the situation has been ongoing since June; the opposition PP agrees and has denounced the council over the matter. A PP spokesman said that it is not just full time residents that have noticed the situation and many tourists have made unflattering comments over the summer. They go on to say the problems include “rubbish strewn pavements, filthy corners, unswept streets, weeds and badly maintained public lighting”. The governing PSOE has said that it is “satisfied” with the cleanliness levels of the town.w

LIME, an offshoot of Uber that is running a business hiring out electric scooters in Valencia City, has been told by the town council to remove it´s 200 scooters or the police will seize them. The Lime scheme works by people renting the two wheeled vehicles on the street with a mobile app which tells you where to find them by location devices. When you have finished with your ride you leave it parked on the

pavement for the next user to pick up. The city council has said that Lime does not have a licence to run the business, which has been an immediate success with tourists in particular. However many residents have complained about the vehicles whizzing along pavements, often ridden by people who don´t know the city streets. The council have said the firm need civil liability

insurance for the vehicles and a full licence to trade. If these demands are not met the local police will treat any scooters on the pavement as abandoned property and confiscate them. Lime, along with it´s parent firm Uber and businesses such as Deliveroo is part of the burgeoning gig economy. However like the other firms it is being accused of bypassing employment laws by classing it´s workers as self employed.

The night train is coming GENERALITAT President Ximo Puig has announced plans for the Valencian metro system to run overnight, probably starting next year. He made the announcement in a general police debate, saying that Metrovalencia, the firm that runs the service, has agreed to the change. This will be for weekends and public holidays, something that regular users have been

campaigning about for a while. Bus services have also been improved recently, with the night service doubling, something helped by the ban on parking on bus lanes overnight which was permitted before. The other main transport announcement for the city was the new rail connection joining Calle Alicante to Natzaret by 2021.

Words of warning

Age Concern need additional volunteers They say giving is better than receiving. By just giving 3 or 4 hours a week of your time volunteering for Age Concern, means many people can receive a little support, friendship and comfort. Most of us are retired and soaking up the good life here in Spain, after working a lifetime, but we hear so often that we miss having something worthwhile to occupy ourselves. Now is your opportunity to make a difference to people not so fortunate to have a huge circle of friends to fill our days. We seek Drivers, preferably with a Spanish driving licence, but not absolutely necessary, to drive one of our two vehicles collecting beneficiaries from their homes and bringing them to our centre in La Siesta for their coffee mornings and then taking them home. Also, to collect donations of smallhousehold items destined for distribution to our shops. A very interesting vacancy exists in our lending library at our centre. We need one or two book loving people to act as Librarians managing our library, assisting book borrowers and generally maintaining the book shelves and stock. The library is only open every Tuesday from 10.30am – 12.30pm. Our charity shop in PatricioZammit Street in Torrevieja is extremely busy every day and would welcome several volunteers to deal with multinational customers. Serving,

dealing with displays and stock rotation this role would suit anyone with retail experience and you would work with an extremely friendly team. Shop is open Monday – Friday 10.30am – 1.30pm and you may choose which day suits you best and if you speak a foreign language that would be a distinct advantage, but not absolutely necessary. Our centre in La Siesta, the hub of Age Concern, offers people a host of activities almost on a daily basisand needs one or two additional volunteers to help mornings from 10.00am – 1.30pm. Everyday is different here as you could be making tea or coffee, welcoming people bringing in donations, helping someone with finding information to their particular query, mixing with regular beneficiaries and joining in with their chat, keep the centre tidy and free from obstacles, assisting with the hiring out of mobility aids and their return and even possibly helping with fundraising events. Always different every day, so you won’t get bored. All positions are open to ladies and gents. To apply, in the first instance telephone 966 786 887 Monday – Friday between 10.00am – 1.30pm to arrange a convenient day and time to pop in and find out how you can help, days, times etc. Your help is invaluable to those not as fortunate as most of us.

ORIHUELA’S local police chief has made his annual warning about dwindling police numbers at a ceremony to commemorate the force’s patron saint, the Virgen de Monserrate, José María Pomares warned that if his force does not recruit new officers over the next year, maintaining

security across the area would become even more difficult, as people begin to hit retirement age over the coming months. The police boss pointed out that he has a current staff of 142, with an average age of 46 years, which is well below the recommended level of 200 officers.

Pomares made his remarks at the La Lonja auditorium in front of Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana and security councillor, Mariola Rocamora, with the politicians seemingly in a conciliatory mood, after a series of clashes with the force, which led to officers staging an overtime ban.

Drop Quotes

Copyright © 2017 Best for Puzzles

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

FRIDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2018

Motoring

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

NEW Dacia Duster When it comes to new cars, there’s not much you can get for €12,000 these days - even the cheapest Fiesta would set you back at least another €4,000. Yet you can get your hands on a shiny new Dacia Duster for your hard earned €12,000. And it represents a lot of SUV for the money.

Dacia says it has spent the past five years listening to existing Duster owners to find out exactly what needed to be improved when it came to producing the 2018 generation Duster. What those owners must have said is sort the interior out, as it’s here where you’ll find the biggest changes

from the old model. This is still a budget car, make no mistake, but it’s a lot nicer inside now with less rough plastics and a better quality finish. The seats have been redesigned and are far more comfortable, plus you get the added bonus that the driver’s seat no longer wobbles.

Which is nice. It’s also much quieter inside, thanks to better sound insulation. Go for the basic Access model with its headline sub€12,000 price and you’ll have to be prepared to make some compromises. For starters, there’s no radio. At all. So the steel wheels will be the least of your worries.

Security flaws in Tesla and McLaren keyless entry Researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium uncovered a serious security flaw in the keyless entry and start system used by manufacturers such as McLaren and Telsa. The group`from the Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography research group (COSIC) were able to successfully attack and clone the key fob of two Tesla Model S cars in “a matter of seconds”, allowing them to unlock and start the vehicle. Developed by software

company Pektron, the system is fitted to a number of high-end models. According to the research team, it’s easier to attack than other systems of this type, because the attackers don’t need to be close to the car and the key fob at the same time. They released a video online, showing how quickly the Model S was accessed. McLaren has confirmed that the research demonstrates a “theoretical vulnerability in our vehicle security systems”, but that

it has “not been proven to affect our vehicles, and we know of no McLaren that has been compromised in such a way”. Customers are being contacted by email to inform them of the issue, however, and are being sent a signal blocking pouch for the car’s key. Tesla previously released a ‘pin to drive’ security feature as a response to the findings, which the researchers recommend owners use alongside disabling the passive entry system.

Still, you do get electric front windows, Isofix in the back and a heater. You’re better off with an Essential which gets things like air con while Comfort at €14,500 comes with sat-nav. Even the top Prestige model still looks very good value for money at €16,000 considering it gets climate control, keyless entry, parking sensors and navigation. The 1.6 SCe engine is fine around town but pretty gutless if you want any sort of half decent acceleration. Fortunately the far superior 1.2 TCe is on its way. The 1.5 dCi is the best choice if it’s low down pulling power and big mileage economy you want. The Duster is pretty much what you’d expect from behind the wheel. The steering is responsive enough and it rides reasonably well but as with the old Duster, this is a car that’s designed for affordable A-to-B motoring, if it’s bells and whistles you want, you’ll be disappointed. What you do get is an honest and unpretentious SUV that’s great value. While this Duster is

based on the same platform as the old model, Dacia says it started with a clean slate (our favourite kind of slate) when it came to the interior. It’s definitely a big improvement from the previous model and now less like a mish-mash of old Renault parts. It still feels like a budget car, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it is now at least somewhere you can enjoy rather and endure. The plastics are all that bit nicer and less scratchy, while the gear lever and steering wheel are much nicer to hold. The design is more user-friendly with the ventilation controls and screen all moved up the centre console plus there’s better cabin storage too. The front seat cushions are a little longer and all models have a centre armrest, lumbar adjustment and a new height-adjustment system with more travel than before. Overall it means it’s now much easier to find a comfortable driving position in the Duster, especially if you’re tall. Another added bonus is that the driver’s seat no longer wobbles when it’s at its lowest setting.

For Sale

Jenson Button announced on his Instagram account on Monday morning: “McLaren P1 up for sale so that someone else can enjoy her. It’s a tough decision but living in America I don’t really get the chance to drive this beauty, I did give her a final blast up to Silverstone for WEC last month though!” How much? Well, as they say, if you need to ask you can’t afford it. But as a guide, a 2015 example sold at auction in America earlier

this year for US$1.7 million (£1.3 million). The car is being sold by Steve Hurn Cars, based in Suffolk. Jenson is currently promoting his new book, Jenson Button: Life to the Limit. The P1 is far from the only interesting car he has owned over the years. His collection has included a Vauxhall Cavalier, Ferrari F355 & F40 and a Bugatti Veyron that unfortunately broke down in Kensington during the first few weeks of

ownership. “It doesn’t matter how much money you have in your bank account, you still seem to come to the end of the month and ask yourself ‘how did I spend all that?’” . “One of my favourites ever is a VW camper van I bought. We spent a fair bit doing it up, but what I realised is that there’s far more fun to be had in buying cars you can use, and enjoy, than ones that you sweat over driving every mile in, because of the expense”

OLLIE

It’s currently estimated that the UK’s pet population stands at some 65 million, roughly the same as the number of people that live in the country. An astonishing figure, taken from statistics made available by the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association, it’s proof if any were needed that we’re a nation of animal-lovers.

Just in time ARC agreed to take this little girl from Valencia Perrera. Soon after her arrival she produced 4 boys and a little girl. Mila is approx. 2 years old and is a super Mum, she and her pups will be ready for their forever homes around 19thSeptember. Please contact ARC if you can foster or adopt any of them.

The same organisation also ranks the most popular species to have in the home, and although there are some obvious inclusions in the list, some entries might surprise some people. Fish in tanks and ponds make up the biggest proportion of pets, with conservative estimates reckoning some 40 million now live under our watchful eyes, which is no big revelation, given that most fish owners will look after more than one individual gilled pal. Cats and dogs feature in the biggest proportion of homes, with roughly half the population having one or the other - another less-thanastounding fact. Nevertheless, the results are not without some shocks. For example, who would have thought that domestic fowl would account for 1 million of the animals we consider to be friends, ranking at number six overall, even with the

obvious rise in popularity of self-sufficiency and the clear egg-related benefits of owning a chicken? Or that just under 1% of all households now have a lizard of some description, irrespective of the increased access to such exotic creatures Britons have been afforded in recent times?

Inspired by the findings, and sure we’re not the only ones who would find this kind of survey interesting, it seemed like a good idea to report the statistics to you. As such, take a look at the full list below, and see which others you didn’t expect, and whether or not your favourite non-human housemate is something of a rarity on these isles, or a more common feature in residences across the country.

Antidepressants & Children

Are you aware of the trend in the UK for giving children antidepressants? Why should children need such powerful drugs? What is going on in their lives that drive parents to such extremes? It appears that doctors in the UK are prescribing more and more antidepressants for children. In 2016, there were 64.7 million prescriptions for antidepressants which is the highest ever recorded (2015 = 61.0 million). Of this number the prescriptions for under 18-year-olds amounted to 64,765; for 7 to 12-year-olds there were 3,876, and for those of 6 and under, there were a staggering 315

prescriptions.

Are children suffering more depression than ever?

The answer is not as simple as it appears. Though there may be more depression now than before, it is possible that doctors are simply identifying depression more now than in the past. When asked, however, doctors report that they are prescribing more antidepressants because the waiting lists for other forms of therapy are too long. They have nothing else to offer. At present, the only approved antidepressant is fluoxetine which

Why probiotics are good for your health (BPT) - According to probiotic entrepreneur Heather Holmes, the human body naturally contains trillions of good and bad bacteria that must stay in balance for optimal health. This balance is fragile and often disrupted by changes in environment or routine, diet, oral antibiotics, a woman’s period or sex. Good probiotic bacteria, introduced through foods, supplements and environmental cleaning products, can keep your digestive tract and everything around you clean, healthy and safe. In other words, probiotics are beneficial inside the body and outside the body.

External probiotics

P2 Probiotic Power is a line of food-grade, non-GMO, chemical-free probiotic products that create a barrier against bad bacteria, killing germy invaders and keeping them away by safely cleaning and protecting teeth, skin, hands, air, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, hotel rooms, airplane trays, air vents and pets. Countertops, cutting boards, washing machines, your pet’s water bowl, and baby rattles all harbor bad bacteria. Failing to add beneficial probiotics into your

home environment can leave you and your household vulnerable to bad bacteria that can cause illness. Bleach, disinfectants and antibacterial products can cause bad bacteria to strengthen and multiply.

Internal probiotics

The two most common strains of internal probiotics, lactobacillus and bifodobacterium, live in the digestive system, urinary system and genitalia. They help send food through your gut, absorb nutrients and protect the body against potentially harmful invasions by bad bacteria. These beneficial probiotic strains can be found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi and pickles, to name a few. While probiotics are often prescribed for problems or the overall health of the digestive system, they’re capable of more - benefiting other areas of the body and our external environment.

Digestion

More than 100 million Americans suffer from issues related to their gut or GI tract, such as constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea or abdominal discomfort. In fact, overgrowth

of bad bacteria in your gut has also been linked to obesity and even depression. Most of your body’s immune cells (70 to 80 percent) are in your gut, so it’s to your benefit to consider probiotic options that may help you ease a condition. Since gut health plays a vital role in our overall wellness, taking a supplement like vitafusion Probiotic helps to provide good bacteria to the digestive tract. Digestive health for kids There are even probiotics to help support your little one’s digestive system. One serving of L’il Critters Probiotic supports digestive health by

delivering good bacteria to the digestive tract - in a gummy that kids enjoy. There are many new probiotic options to benefit your internal and external health.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society report

For the second week in succession, El Plantio 2 Golf Society were evicted from their designated Club Day by the Golf Course management – this time to accommodate a large Society who had booked the 18. Hole Course but wanted to play the 9 Hole course as a warm up. I suppose that we cannot complain as we receive extremely competitive membership rates. The thirteen members who had registered to play the 9 holes twice in a Joker competition were then relocated to play a Joker on the back nine holes on the big course. I think that the nonmembers of the big course

quite enjoyed another outing and two of them figured on the winning side. The one flight of four team members had to adjust their returns by discarding one of their Stableford scores on each hole but it did not seem to affect them too much as they were just pipped for first place on Count Back. Nearest the pins, Hole 14 – John O’Brien, Hole 18 – John Wilby Third Place, Helen Beddows, Rod Loveday, Mike Williams – 47 points. Second Place, John O’Brien, Lyn Young, Mike Davies, David Swann – 56 points. First Place, Ray Housley, Lawrence Wanty, Alistair Douglas– 56 pòints C/B.

The photograph L to R, John Wilby, Lyn Young, David Swann, Ray Housley, Mike Davies, Alistair Douglas, Lawrence Wanty, John O’Brien, Helen Beddows, Rod Loveday, Mike Williams If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230

Las Ramblas San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca 5th September, 2018 Golf Society

It was good to be back at an old favourite this week, and although the greens were still recovering from their recent hollow tining, the course was generally in good nick. The weather was hot but also humid and this took its toll on one of our committee members who decided to walk. Nine holes was all he could muster before the ‘smell of sweat’ took over and he gave up. Special mention here for our octogenarian Norman McBride (83) who not only completed 18 holes but scored a magnificent 31 points. The scoring was a little down on recent weeks, perhaps reflecting that this

is a long course – mind you no one told Krazy Kyrre our big-hitting, if somewhat erratic, Norwegian – his radar was obviously locked in today and not only did he better par (one of only 2 players) – he did it with 42 points. There was some keen competition amongst a good field of 42 and scores were close at the top of the three divisions. Best guests 1st John Urqhart – 2nd Peter Webster Nearest the pin hole 3 - Steve Higgins hole 6 – Kev Albright hole 13 – Chris Hamblett hole 16 - Adrian Roberts. Bronze division - 1st - John Trehy 33 2nd -

RIGHT ON ‘KEW’ - GARDENS TO BLOSSOM IN ST LEGER

The Weekender’s racing columnist Andrew Atkinson looks at Saturday’s historic St Leger at Doncaster - First staged 242 years ago will Kew Gardens blossom in front of 30,000 racegoers?

Andrew Atkinson

The St Leger £700,000 prize-pot staged at Doncaster on Saturday is the final Classic of the 2018 British Flat season run over 1 mile 6 furlongs. Aidan O’Brien trained Kew Gardens, heavily backed at 6-4, and Irish Derby winner Latrobe, 101, trained by his son Joseph O’Brien, are both expected to run well. Kew Gardens won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot under Ryan Moore in June over a mile and six furlongs: “We always thought he’d stay,” said Aidan. “He loves fast ground. He’s had a little break and trained for the St Leger,” said Aidan who won the race with Capri, ridden by Ryan Moore, in 2017. Joseph O’Brien and his brother, jockey Donnacha, won the Irish Derby with Latrobe in June, it being the first success in the race for two siblings in modern times at the Curragh.

“Latrobe stays really well and we’ve always thought he was a really good horse - he’s never run a bad race - he’s very good,” said Donnacha. “Latrobe is a tough horse and stays well. We always loved him having bought him as a yearling in Newmarket - he has never really let us down,” said Joseph. Record breaking trainer Mark Johnston saddles Dee Ex Bee (14-1) having finished second behind Masar in the Derby in June. Johnston became the most successful racehorse trainer in Britain, when saddled his 4,194th winner in August. The flagship day of the William Hill St Leger Festival, Saturday’s St Leger Day, is set to attract over 30,000 racegoers, the St Leger Stakes being the world’s oldest classic. Wells Farhh Go has been well supported, backed down to 10-1 from odds of 25-1 - after impressing in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket. Tim Easterby trained Wells Farhh Go made all over 1 mile 5 furlong to win the Group 3 race, ahead of Loxley and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Inaugurated in 1776 - the race was the dream of Anthony St. Leger, an army officer and politician - originally run over two miles. Conduit, trained Sir Michael Stoute, won the race

in 2007, it being his first St Leger victory, fulfilling wins in all English Classic races. Stoute could be in line with an early 73rd birthday present with a string of winners at Doncaster on Saturday. Stoute, son of the former chief of police in Barbados, has entered Dream Of Dreams, Alamania, and Sun Maiden, by Frankel and a half-sister to Group One-winner Midday. (Final declarations Friday) Stoute, who took out a trainers licence in 1972, has also entered stable notables Veracious, Crystal Ocean and Poet’s World at Leopardstown on Saturday. Stoute, Knighted in 1998 for services to tourism in Barbados, who has won a plethora of Champions’ trainer titles, trained Shergar to win the 1981 Epsom Derby. Shergar was later stolen. Newmarket based Stoute, 72, who trains at Freemason Lodge Stables and Beech Hurst Stables, has tested Dream Of Dreams over 6 furlongs. Along with the St Leger stakes, the Festival’s showpiece day features top class races - including the Champagne Stakes and the Portland Handicap. St Leger betting: Kew Gardens 6-4, Lah Ti Dar 5-1, Old Persian 7-1, Wells Farhh Go 10-1, Latrobe 10-1, Southern France 141, De Ex Bee 14-1, Raymond Tusk 16-1. 20-1 bar.

Las Ramblas Golf Society

A good start to the week with a closely contested 2 ball better ball, lowest handicap out of the group playing with the highest. Our winners today with 44 points were Bryan Neal (yawn…. this is getting boring!) ably assisted by John Shervell. A steady round from Bryan (again) who notched up 28 of those points. Within a couple of shots and taking the podium in second place, were Dave Pulling and Geoff (first off) Biggerstaff. Wednesday’s stableford

saw some action when Reg (the cat) Akehurst had to throw himself to the ground in order not to be hit by a bunker shot. At 89 though we had to help him to his feet again! First place went to Brian Staines with 38 points, a snifter in front of Tom Hardie with 37. Third on countback was Dave Pulling with 37 points (nice to see someone playing off the yellow tees) and Olga Douglas took the fourth slot with 35. Three 2’s today; Nigel Price and the ‘blues brothers’ Bryan Neal and

Tom Hardie. On Friday we played a 6x6x6 (I’ve explained how this one is scored before!) The winning team with 84 points were Rod (yes I played 18 holes) Doel, Dave Pulling, Pete Dunn and Yvonne Phipps. Did you know? In March, 1961, American Lou Kretlow hit the longest ever hole-in-one, sinking his ball from 427 yards at the 16th hole in Oklahoma. Maybe I’ll be reporting something similar soon (not!)

The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper had earlier called his behaviour “unacceptable” received a light sentence from a judge who could have locked him up for six months. “On 15th of July, he was the proudest man on the planet,” attorney David Sonn said in reference to the day Lloris and his France team lifted the World Cup trophy in Moscow. “Forty days later, he was arrested in central London.” “Today he apologises to the court.” Lloris was one of the heroes of France’s commanding march to their second football World Cup in 20 years. The triumph turned the 31-year-old into a national hero and confirmed his status as one of the most respected goalkeepers in the world. But Lloris’s dream turned into a nightmare when his Porsche was pulled over for a routine stop in central London at 2:20am on August 24. Lloris registered 100 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath in the police check, roughly the equivalent of seven glasses of wine.

Gloves are off as Young McGregor sued blood for by Simon Russell

MMA star Conor McGregor may have a different kind of battle on his hands as a fellow fighter has announced he is suing the Irishman. American lightweight Michael Chiesa is claiming an incident where McGregor and his entourage stormed a UFC event has led to “severe emotional distress, mental trauma and bodily harm”. The target appeared to be McGregor’s bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov who Chiesa was sitting close to on the team bus. He claims he was injured in the attack and there is footage of large objects being thrown in the incident. Chiesa says that the injuries have stopped him from fighting and he is partly suing due to loss of income.

Ferrari

Kimi Raikkonen (left) to replace Charles Leclerc (right)

FERRARI have confirmed that 20 year old Charles Leclerc will be lining up on the grid for them next season, replacing Kimi Raikkonen who is moving to Sauber, the team Leclerc currently drives for. The Flying Finn has been with the Italian FI outfit for five years, his second spell there after his world championship success with

them in 2007. Monaco born Leclerc has been picked by many as a star of the future and Ferrari will be happy to have a younger driver lining up alongside the experienced Sebastian Vettel. Sauber meanwhile have said that Raikkonen’s experience is an important stepping stone in the team’s growth and development.

England legend Cook bows out in style

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

PLAYING his final test match after announcing his retirement, Alastair Cook wrote the perfect postscript to his career by scoring a century against India. He went on to make 147, taking his career total of runs to 12,472, a record haul for an Englishman and fifth in the list of all time test match run scorers. His contribution helped England to beat India and wrap up a series they had won the match before. Questioned about his reasons for retiring at the age of 33 Cook admitted “he had nothing left in the tank. After the plaudits have died down the headache for the selectors now is how to replace a man who has opened every England test in the last 10 years, a massive pair of cricket boots to try and fill.
