LA PALOMA REVIVED

ONE OF the most infamous “White Elephant” buildings in the southern Costa Blanca is set to be completed at a cost of over three million euros, Pilar de la Horadada council has approved the expenditure to finish off the controversial Mariana Baches Cultural Centre, given the nickname of “La Paloma(The Dove)”. This week´s news comes some 13 years after the building work stopped due to the finishing costs ballooning from over two million euros to 12 million euros.

by Alex Trelinski

The construction contract was awarded in 2001 but work ground to a halt in March 2006, with the deteriorating interiors and exteriors being attended to periodically for safety purposes. La Paloma, which stands next to the rambla on the northern edge of the Pilar town centre, was once described as the “shame of the town”, as it stood as a nationally-reported tribute to the massive overspending of Spanish councils during the prerecession boom time.

Pilar council says that the centre will house the area´s cultural heritage and will display items that the Gratiniano Baches museum has not got the room to do so, as well as providing the correct air conditioning and ambience for displaying artefacts. A new public library will also feature at La Paloma, along with rooms for educational workshops and lectures; studying; children´s facilities; and internet access. It´s unclear when the project is expected to be finished.

A MAJOR OPERATION in Torrevieja, which has seen ten cannabis clubs closed down and 38 arrests, including nine different nationalities and two British ringleaders, has been wound up after nearly a year by the Guardia Civil. Operation Mortalek was launched in June 2018 on the orders of the Alicante Province antidrug prosecutor, who

by Simon Russell

had received reports of major criminal activity in Torrevieja. The Guardia Civil carried out five different phases of raids and actions over a ten month period, as they uncovered illegal marijuana plantations and sales points at

the clubs, which had around six thousand members. Operation Mortalek saw over 45 thousand euros in cash seized, in addition to drugs with a street value of over 250 thousand euros. Some of the drugs were made into chocolate spread, muffins, biscuits,

lollipops, and jam. As previously reported by The Weekender, 21 people were arrested earlier this year as part of the Guardia sweep including an unnamed British couple who distributed hashish and marijuana to sell at four cannabis clubs that they ran in Torrevieja.

THE Spanish use the term “helicopter parenting” (as they do in the UK and US) to describe parents who overly cosset their children. However when it comes to helping with homework - or in some cases doing it on behalf of your kids - a study has shown that the benefits are negative. The Oviedo University research showed that secondary age school children’s overall results suffer where parents help them

by Simon Russell

rather than letting kids work things out for themselves. Up to 40% of mums and dads admit to helping their kids at home beyond simple guidance, despite the fact that this is frowned upon as homework plays a significant part in kids end of year results, up to a third of the total. The reasons for the lower results vary. Kids that simply

aren’t as academic may need more help at home while others are failing to learn the subject adequately if their parents are doing the work for them. In extreme cases teachers may dock marks if they have reason to believe that students aren’t the authors of their own work. Gentle but not controlling guidance at home is judged to be the best for pupils, say the researchers.

LOOKING FOR CLUES

TWO YEARS ON after her death, investigators hired by the family of Kirsty Maxwell, who fell from a balcony at the Apartamentos Payma in Benidorm, returned to the area this week to try to learn more about happened. The 27-year-old, from Livingston in Scotland fell from the tenth floor balcony of an apartment which was occupied by five men from Nottingham during a hen do in April 2017. Her family believe Kirsty lost her grip on the balcony barrier after scaling it and are trying to piece together events before she fell. Authorities said she was five times over the drink-drive limit. A team led by former detective David Swindle has been speaking to tourists and residents in the vicinity of the Hotel Presidente and the Apartamentos Payma,

by Simon Russell

in the hope that they get any more information about the tragedy and that some memories could be jogged. Mr Swindle said: “It is shocking that Kirsty’s family

have had to keep pushing and pushing for answers and basic lines of enquiry to be progressed.” No charges have been brought in the case and police believe Kirsty jumped from the balcony after a night out

with friends. Kirsty´s family have also launched an appeal on social media calling for any video footage or photos taken at the time, which feature her and her friends in pink shirts, to be passed onto them.

He was approached by somebody who engaged him in an angry conversation, and things got of control as the aggressor took a pool cue and started to hit the 58-year-old on the head with it, knocking him unconscious.

The incident was so violent that witnesses first believed that he had been killed, but he regained consciousness and got medical treatment after suffering injuries to his skull, and then filed a complaint with the Guardia Civil in Santa Pola.

Finance Feature provided by...

All my readers should consider attending one of these essential events

Every week Chorus publish articles to help Brits here in Spain navigate safely and securely through areas such as investing, retirement planning, pension transfers, succession planning, tax and legal matters. This week I felt my column inches would be even better served by telling you all about a very important series of seminars that are returning to our area on May8th, 9th and 10th, which cover all these important subjects. One of the most common pieces of feedback I’ve experienced over the years from thousands of expats here in Spain is that sometimes it’s hard to know

who to believe when it comes to vital information regarding your pensions, investments and tax planning. You can ask 3 people a question and you get 3 different answers, and often this means people are getting information on critical subjects from social media or a guy at the bar! The Finance Tour returns to Spain for the third year, bringing experts from FTSE listed UK institutions, to answer your questions directly. The seminars start with a short presentation from each company, followed by an open Q+A. At the end of the session, you can enjoy a

coffee whilst having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel of experts. For those who already hold investments like ISAs, UK bonds/ platforms, QROPS/Spanish Investment Bonds, this gives you a great opportunity to ensure your product is appropriate and working for you in the best way. For those considering a new pension transfer or investment or trying to understand matters such as Wealth Tax or IHT here in Spain, this is an unprecedented opportunity to speak directly with the product providers before you go ahead

and seek independent advice. I appreciate there seems to be a different seminar, breakfast meeting or event nearly every week in Spain, but The Finance Tour is truly unique in that it gives you the chance to hear directly from a group of trusted companies who manage the pensions and investments of over 25 million customers worldwide. Look out for The Finance Tour’s adverts in page 15 of the Weekender or visitwww.thefinancetour.com for bookings and information. We really hope to see as many of you as possible at these essential events.

Benidorm thief caught in the act THE PSOE Socialists under prime minister Pedro Sánchez, were as expected, voted in as the largest party with 123 seats in last Sunday´s general election, The PSOE though will need the help of the leftwing Podemos party, who lost 29 seats and now have 42 deputies, as well as smaller regional groupings to form a majority government. In his victory speech,

by Alex Trelinski

Mr Sánchez said the party’s big challenges were to fight inequality, advance co-existence and halt corruption. The right-of-centre Partido Popular saw a big collapse in its vote, winning just 66 seats, down from 137 in the previous parliament, in what was its worst ever election performance, with the centrist Ciudadanos

party nipping at its heels, with 57 seats, up by 27 from the 2016 vote. For the first time since the death of dictator General Franco, a far-right party, Vox, enters parliament with 23 seats, somewhat lower than opinion polls had projected before Sunday. The voter turnout was 75.8 per cent the biggest for several years and nine per cent higher than the last election in 2016.

Local police in Benidorm, surprised a thief who had broken into a bar in the resort last week, just as he was about to steal money from a cash register. The officers had been alerted by an employee of the business, who witnessed the man force a side window of the closed premises with a crowbar, before entering the bar. The member of staff, who had arrived to open the bar for trading, alerted local police officers, who used the employee’s keys to enter the premises. The thief, wearing a pair of socks over his hands, was so focused on attempting to force the till drawer open with a pair of scissors, he was unaware that the officers had entered the bar.

by Alex Trelinski

Once confronted, the robber used the crowbar and scissors in a threatening manner towards the agents, who eventually overpowered and relieved him of his weapons. The suspect, who had left a toaster propping the side window open to allow his exit from the premises, was in possession of a large amount of euro coins, which he had taken from the cash till. The Policemen arrested the thief, a Somalian national, aged 43, on charges of breaking and entering with the intention of theft, before placing him at the disposal of Benidorm Courts, where he was released on charges.

Bike ban on pavements by Alex Trelinski

AS part of its ongoing overhaul of traffic and road regulations, Valencia City has announced plans to ban all motorbikes and mopeds from parking on pavements. However the new ordinance will not be applied immediately as the Department of Mobility is planning to first implement a large number of extra parking spaces for the two wheeled vehicles. It is already illegal to park the machines on pavements less than three metres wide, but the new restrictions will bar them from sharing any space with pedestrians regardless of the space. Motorcycles will also be barred from using the lanes currently reserved for taxis and city buses.

Thousands of kids bullied FERRY FIRE DETOUR at Spanish schools by Simon Russell

THE Ministry of Education said that there were 5,557 cases of bullying reported to them last year involving school-children, 70% of which had been going on for several months or even years. The numbers are for children or guardians who rang the national hotline and although the amount of calls fell it was down mainly to the fact that many regions have now started local hotlines. While the service is open to all, about 80% of the calls came from concerned parents with many kids being “too scared” to report the harassment. The commonest age involved in such incidents is the 10 to 13 age group,

A FIRE broke out on board a Brittany Ferries ship carrying hundreds of passengers from Plymouth to Santander in northern Spain on Monday morning. Crews working on the Pont-Aven vessel were alerted to the blaze in the engine room at just before 4.00 am, forcing it to reroute to the port of Brest in north-west France.

accounting for almost half in total. About 40% of these were verbal although physical and on-line harassment are both common. 11% of those calling in reported instances of sexual abuse from their peers. Talking

British and Spanish nationals were amongst the travellers, with no injuries sustained by them or crew members. A number of services between Santander and England had to be cancelled, with passengers on the firehit ferry given the option to return to Plymouth from Brest, or to make their journey to Spain via their car, with compensation offered.

of the psychological effects bullied children said anxiety, sadness, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping were all common. The national hotline number is 900 018 018 which is free and manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Benimantell death crash A young driver lost his life and his passenger sustained minor injuries, when the vehicle in which they were travelling, left the road, on the outskirts of an inland Marina Baixa village last week. Circumstances surrounding the incident,

which occurred on the CV70 road passing through the mountainous municipality of Benimantell, remain a mystery. The accident took place at approximately 17.45h, close to kilometre 36.9 of

the highway. The twenty nine year old male driver of the car, died from injuries sustained from the accident, whilst his 25 year old female passenger was treated in hospital for minor injuries received as a result of the incident.

FORGET IT CARLES CATALUNYA´S former president, Carles Puigdemont, who fled Spain in 2017 after being part instrumental in organising an illegal independence referendum in his region, has been banned from standing in this month´s European Parliamentary elections. Spain´s electoral commission made the ruling this week was slammed by Puigdemont as a “legal scandal and a coup to democracy”.

by Alex Trelinski

The commission has also barred two ex-Catalan ministers who are living outside Spain in exile, but have given no reason behind their ruling. Puigdemont’s party, Together for Catalunya, said it would “immediately deploy all forms of legal action in the Spanish state and in Europe to defend the rights of the three candidates.”

Dirty old town IN an unenviable poll to be near the top of, Alicante City has been voted the second dirtiest city to live in Spain. OCU, the consumer’s organisation, carried out the survey and asked residents about the urban cleaning of their towns and found only Jaen rated worse. The city has plummeted in the ratings over the last few years with “rubbish and excrement” piled up by waste bins and poorly managed services all being cited. The council was also one of the few that failed or refused to

provide the OCU with details about their lucrative cleaning contracts. In response the current administration blamed the last government’s four year tenure and said that matters were being addressed since they had taken office last year. However the council cannot take all the blame as according to the report Alicante citizens seem particularly bad at cleaning up after their dogs, despite hefty fines for the offence, and there are issues with waste disposal in general by residents and visitors alike.

MIGRANTS RESCUED by Alex Trelinski

A BOAT with 15 migrants on board, including six children, was intercepted by a patrol boat off the Murcia coast on Saturday evening. The vessel had

A DRIVER who faked his own robbery has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Dolores. The 40-year-old Spaniard managed to call emergency services last month to say that he had been forced off the road in the San Isidro area, and had 280 euros stolen

from him, after three people smashed into his car and forced him out onto the road. Guardia officers felt his account was suspicious despite finding him lying in the road, and relatives subsequently confirmed that he was addicted to gambling and was short of money.

Human trafficking and drugs network busted

VA L E N C I A was one of the bases for a national operation that was trafficking Chinese and Vietnamese nationals to then make them work cultivating marijuana. 21 people were being kept in what has been described as slave conditions at industrial warehouses in Valencia, Madrid, Zamora, Jaen and Guadalajara. These included four Chinese at a warehouse in Chiva (near Valencia City), all without any documentation. It is alleged that the traffickers had shipped the victims from their

home countries under the false pretence of work in Europe. Once here they were put to work in the illegal marijuana plantations and effectively treated as slave labour. To date 24 people have been arrested across Spain, 20 men and four women. The police have also seized 17,000 marijuana plants weighing 1,800 kilos and prepared for shipment abroad. One of those arrested is said to be a wellknown businessman who owns a number of Chinese bazaars.

SPEED CUTTERS COMING

BULL RUN DEATH by Alex Trelinski

A 74-year-old man was gored to death at a bull-running festival in southern Spain. The pensioner was watching the traditional Toro Embolao event in Vejer, in Cadiz, when the animal set upon him. The victim, Juan José Varo, tried to climb to safety by scaling a nearby wall but was knocked down into the path of the bull. Despite desperate attempts to lure it away, the bull came back and attacked the pensioner two further times.

by Alex Trelinski

ALL NEW cars sold in Spain from 2022 will have ‘smart speed assistants’ built in, meaning they will adjust the speed of the vehicle to the limits on the road it is travelling on. The move from the European Union had already been proposed by Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) last year, but the plan is that car drivers will be able to deactivate it if they wish - only drivers of coaches,

buses, lorries and vans will not be able to switch theirs off. The ‘smart speed assistant’ alone would cut road deaths by 20 per cent according to the European Union, whilst Jesús Monclús from Spain´s MAPFRE Foundation claims that if every car in the country was equipped with a speed assistant, the number of deaths from accidents would drop by around 400 per annum.

Hands on GP arrested THE Guardia Civil have arrested a family doctor in Alfafar (Valencia) following various complaints of sexual abuse and inappropriate behaviour from female patients. The investigation was opened earlier this month after a woman complained that the doctor had groped her during a routine consultation, something he had tried to do before. This led to interviews

A Catalan rap artist wanted by the authorities for incitement to violence was arrested in Valencia this week. Close call at airport

Granddaughter abuse case starts by Simon Russell

PROSECUTORS have asked for a sentence of five and a half years in the case of a 67 year old man accused of regularly abusing his granddaughter while she was in his care. The alleged events took place in 2016 when the girl was 14. She eventually told her family about the incidents and later required psychological assistance. In the opening statements the court heard how the defendant took advantage of times that he was alone with the girl (when caring for her over the summer) to touch her inappropriately. The trial started this week and is being held in Alicante’s Provincial Court.

AN investigation is underway after an aeroplane that was taxiing down the runway at Vigo airport prior to take off had to abort the procedure as another plane was coming in to land and was on a direct collision course. The craft that

was on the ground was an Air Nostrum flight bound for Valencia and had got up to a speed of 100 kmph before the air traffic control issued the emergency

Boy dies after fight

AN autopsy on a 17 year old boy who died after being involved in a fight last Sunday showed that the cause of death was a cranial haemorrhage, possibly caused by the blows inflicted on the victim. The body also had several other injuries, all probably as a result of the violence. The incident happened in the Basque town of San Sebastian when the boy was set

Drivers beware by Alex Trelinski

PLANNED new motoring regulations in Valencia City will have the effect of favouring both greener forms of transport and people on foot while bringing in extra regulations for drivers. Two thirds of the cities streets will have a 30kmph limit as all single lane roads will have that as a maximum speed. Disabled drivers will be able to use the dedicated bus-taxi lanes and the issue of loading and unloading is also being looked at. Concerning push-bikes and motorbikes there will be no circumstances where they can use pavements while electric scooters have a maximum speed of 10kmph in pedestrian areas and 15 kmph on bicycle lanes, rising to 20kmph on certain lanes. Last but not least, using your push-bike with a dog tethered to it is also now prohibited. KIDS WEIGHTY RISE PUIG´S BIG NIGHT

SPAIN has some of the highest child obesity rates in Europe according to a World Health Organisation(WHO) report, which says that this could be down to less reliance on healthy eating and the socalled Mediterranean Diet. Southern European countries have considerably higher numbers of obese children compared to those in the northern part of the continent, in a survey that took in over 600 thousand youngsters. Seventeen per cent of Spanish girls aged between six and nine were found to be obese, based on figures collated between 2015 and 2017, with only Cyprus worse off at 19 per cent. For boys in the same

Infant meningitis death ALTHOUGH few details have been released, the press have been informed that a one year old child has died at Alicante’s General Hospital after contracting meningitis. The infant was admitted in a serious condition on Thursday last week and passed away a few hours later.

Hospitals have strict protocols following such incidents due to the highly infectious nature of the disease and any relatives or nursing staff who came into contact with the infant will be provided with prophylaxis, a preventative medication.

THE LEFT-OFCENTRE coalition will continue to run Valencia´s regional government, after last Sunday´s regional election.. The members of the socalled “Botanic” coalition got 52 seats, down from 55 in the 2015 vote, though the PSOE/PSPV socialists, under president Ximo Puig, got four more seats taking them up to 27 deputies, whilst the Compromís and

Podemos parties both saw falls. It´s the first time that the PSOE/PSPV have come top in the Valencia regional elections since 1991. The far-right Vox party have ten deputies in Valencia for the first time, as the traditional power-holders, the Partido Popular, slumped to 19 seats, just one ahead of

Ciudadanos, who increased their representation by five seats. Ximo Puig has been highly visible during his four years in power right across the whole of the Valencia region, especially in Alicante Province, and has been a passionate supporter of preserving British expat rights, including healthcare provision, in the light of Brexit.

New power on the throne

The names Pond, James Pond

The emperor after the private ceremony.

FOLLOWING the abdication of Emperor Akihito this week his eldest son, Naruhito, was officially crowned the new Japanese Emperor. His reign got off to a slightly controversial start as, in keeping with tradition, no female members of the family were allowed to attend the small ceremony. Akihito ruled for 30 years and is the first emperor to step down, something he announced in 2016 saying that his age would hinder him in his duties. Although 59-year-old Naruhito and his wife,

now offi-cially Empress Masako, have a daughter the deeply conservative and traditional royal household only allows men to take the throne even if there are no direct male heirs. This means that the new emperors younger brother, Akishino, is next in line to the throne followed by his 12-year-old son. There are also concerns about the well-being of the new Empress, a Harvard educated career diplomat who is known to be suffering from a stress disorder brought on by

failing to adapt to life in the royal household, where women are viewed as decorative and of far less importance than men. Whether Oxford educated Naruhito will try to change some of the older fashioned aspects of mod-ern Japan or stick with tradition remains to be seen. However early comments from him and the views of royal experts are that he is unlikely to rock the boat as he takes his place in an unbroken lineage that dates back to 720AD, the oldest continual monarchy in the world.

Fake heiress convicted

THE closely followed trial of a young working class Russian woman who fooled New York’s glitte-rati into thinking she was a wealthy German heiress finished this week, with 28-year-old Anna So-rokin being found guilty of several counts of fraud and theft. Even her name was a scam - everyone on the thriving Big Apple social scene knew her as Anna Delvey. She made friends with all the right people, those in the world of fashion and art as well as rich “trust fund kids” while it seemed every minute of her life was recorded on Instagram. However, in truth rather than being an heiress her

father was a truck driver who moved to the US when Anna was 16. It’s not clear when the deceptions started, probably around five years ago, but it seemed once people thought she had money, they were happy to give her credit for everything from hotel stays to jewellery and designer clothing. She somehow managed to obtain bank loans as large as $100,000 and then used this cash to splash around ostentatiously, furthering the impression of wealth. However gradually things started to unravel and when some payments were finally re-quested she started

making excuses that didn’t exactly stack up. One former “friend” recalled how they went on a luxury holiday that Anna was going to pay for but after supposed credit card issues she ended up footing the $60,000 bill herself, money she never expects to see again. Unfortunately for Ms Sorokin this friend was a journalist and, after delving into the young woman’s background, wrote a piece that appeared in society magazine “Vanity Fair”. This listed the trail of debts and corruption with many wellknown faces embarrassed at being duped and assuming the “heiress” was good for the money they were owed. After the fallout a string of business and personal debtors took her to court and Ms Sorokin is now likely to face jail, paying the price for her five years of living the high life on other people’s money.

The whale alongside the Norwegian boat.

IN a tale that gives a whole new meaning to the term Cold War, many experts believe that a beluga whale that approached a Norwegian fishing boat in Arctic waters is a Russian spy. The whale was very tame and clearly used to humans but the big clue was the harness around its neck stamped with “Equipment from St Petersburg”. Those who have examined it think that the harness was meant for a camera although it did not contain one in this instance. While the trawler was probably not the target, the whale would be able to

by Simon Russell

get close to more sensi-tive vessels such as warships and even submarines. It was likely used by the Russian navy though it is unclear if the beluga was an escaped training whale or the real deal. Russia is known to have whales in captivity and belugas are intelligent and docile creatures that are susceptible to training. Unsurprisingly the Russian navy is refusing to comment on the deep-sea spy which has now been released back into the wild - without its man-made accessories.

similar to many northern European economies. One ray of light is that over the last 12 months 596,000 new jobs have been created, a net rise in employment of 441,000, or 3.16%. There has also been a rise in permanent contracts and a fall in temporary ones.

BRITS CHANGE PLANS Fewer British holidaymakers have booked a summer holiday inside the European Union this year amid continuing Brexit uncertainty, Thomas Cook has said. The travel firm says almost half (48%) of the holidays it sold up until the end of February were to non-EU destinations, up 10% on last year. Despite this, the firm says Spain is still its most popular destination. Its findings chime with separate Post Office figures showing currency sales for long-haul destinations have jumped. Sales of the Japanese yen were up 12% so far

this year compared with last, while sales of the Indonesian rupiah have increased by 9%, Post Office Travel Money said. The figures are based on Post Office transactions between 1 January and 23 April. The Post Office accounts for about a quarter of all UK currency transactions. It said the biggest growth in currency sales so far this year has been for the Egyptian pound, which has seen a 687% year-onyear increase. Thomas Cook - through which 19 million people book holidays each year

- said after Spain, Turkey had proved the most popular destination for its holidaymakers, accounting for a quarter of its flightonly bookings so far. Chief executive Peter Fankhauser said it was still too early to tell the impact on bookings of the UK’s exit from the European Union being delayed to the end of October. But he said there was “little doubt that the prolonged uncertainty around the manner and timing of Britain’s exit from the European Union has led many customers to press pause on their holiday plans for this summer”.

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Officially the Republic of Peru, this Spanish speaking country is located in the west of South America and can trace its history back to 32nd Century BC. Conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th Century, Peru

proclaimed its independence in 1821 and obtained the same in 1824. With a population of around 32 million of mixed nationalities and

languages, the national language is Spanish. The country is coastal on the West side, a large part of the land (60%) is covered by the Amazon jungle, and in the north home to the impressive Andes mountain range, the largest continuous mountain range in the world. The capital city is Lima, located in the centre of the coastal area of the country, where the s e ap o r t of Callao is also located. A modern and metropolitan city, it is the 3rd largest in South A m er i c a behind Sao Paulo and Mexico City. A wander round this very old city lets you see the architectual influences of its Spanish roots – one of the best examples is in the main square of the city, the Palacio del Gobierno, the official home of Perú s President, and

w h e r e you can see the changing of the guard that takes place at noon daily. Still within the city, you can experience the ancient cultures and historical building, by visiting the Huaca Pucllana, a giant pyramid built with millions of adobe bricks, somewhere in the years 300 – 700 AD by the Lima people. Suncreen and hats are a must, as the sun can be fierce whilst you climb – however the climb is rewarded with a restaurant on site offering mouth-watering traditional dishes (albeit in one of the most expensive restaurants around….) For something a little easier on the pocket, head further up the coast to the Barranco district, a Bohemiam centre of shops, and bars, where local artists also sell their wares. The bridge that connects these two areas is called ‘The Bridge of Sighs’ where local legend tells of a young girl who had fallen in love with a local. Forbidden by her father to see him, she would stand on the bridge and sigh in earshot of all that crossed. It is said that if you hold your breath ´ for the length of the bridge, your wish will be granted… The Barranco itself is great to visit during the day but best enjoyed at night, sipping a cool beer in one of the many roof-top terraces in the area.

Escaping from the city, most travellers head to Machu Picchu, an Inca Citadel constructed in the south of Peru around 1450, most likely as an estate of the then Emperor. The estate remained hidden throughout the Spanish Conquest and was only brought to attention in the early 1900s. Since then, it has been given UNESCO World Heritage status. Efforts have been made to make the destination more ´tourist friendlý however the same efforts have been protested strongly by the Peruvian population, determined to preserve this ancient structure. Numbers are limited daily, and attention should be paid to the altitude of this location, as this can provoke illness in those not aclimatised to heights. Accomodation is very limited at Machu Picchu, but nearby towns offer more reasonable prices, allowing the chance to take in breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. Most people visit as part of a group, however both group and individual travel are easily organized. Given the strong connections with Spain, direct flights between Madrid and Lima are frequent and not overly high priced. May – September is their winter, when the temperatures are nice and overall it is dry. The summer months obviously offer warmer temperatures, but also bring wetter weather.

purchasers who had yet to buy found that overpricing of properties was the main issue, followed by homes in poor condition and only small properties being within their budget. On the other side of the coin, when asked why they thought they

had trouble selling vendors said that the large amount of housing stock on sale was the biggest issue followed by estate agents failings and finally optimistic sale prices. The latter indicates a clear gap between the expectations of buyers and sellers when it comes to current house prices.

Airbnb status clarified

MACIEJ Szpunar, the General Advocate of the European Union Court of Justice, has ruled that holiday rental platform Airbnb should be considered as an information site and not an estate agent. This comes after a French court had asked for clarification on the firms status and whether it should be subject

Landlords paying price as high street struggles AS the crisis for traditional high street retailers in the UK deepens, the landlords who rent properties to them are also counting the cost. Debenhams is the latest household name to hit problems, announcing plans to close 50 of its 166 stores. As well as handing back the keys to these they are asking for reduced rent on their remaining stores, a pattern that has been repeated recently by New Look, Mothercare and

Carpetright among others. The ultimatum to landlords (in reality usually big investment firms) is simple – reduce our rent or we will close our stores, meaning you miss out altogether. Many of these vacated buildings in prime spots across the UK are proving tricky to re-rent and landlords are often being forced to cut rental prices rather than risk leaving them empty.

You wonder at times whether trying to save some peanuts is really worth all the bother, which certainly must be the case with somebody who tried to fool Portsmouth parking wardens by using Tipp-Ex to save £9 on a parking ticket, and then lost a lot more! She paid just £1.80 for an hour’s parking, but then tried to dupe inspectors by whiting out the ‘1’ and writing ’10’ to make it look like she had paid the £10.80 day rate. A court heard she had amassed more than £2,000 in parking fines since March

last year in Portsmouth, receiving a total of 27 tickets, and getting her car eventually towed away into the bargain for nonpayment. Richards pled guilty to two charges of reusing the ticket and got fines and costs worth £800, and revealed that her Mercedes had been repossessed after she failed to keep up with the payments.

Motoring The latest Ford Fiesta takes everything that has given its predecessors so much success – practicality, sensible pricing and great handling – and adds in extra comfort, refinement and technology. It’s easily one of the best small hatchbacks on the market. Perfectly set up for British roads, with revised suspension and slightly deeper profile tyres, the Fiesta irons out rough roads and potholes plus is surprisingly quiet on the motorway. Yet it still has excellent, communicative steering and a light gear change. That means it’s great to drive on a B road and makes light work of corners. It’s not just good to drive though – it’s full of useful t e c h n o l o g y. Even even the basic Style model comes with lane keep assistance and a speed limiter. That’s about all it does come with though – but go for the still well-priced Zetec model and you’ll get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with alloy wheels and a Quickclear heated windscreen. Three and five-door versions are available with the latter providing better rear space for passengers, with reasonable leg and headroom.

Ford Fiesta

The boot as a good side and shape, though there is a sizeable load lip to lift heavy items over and the rear seats don’t fold flat – so for bulky objects like flat packs it could be better. The entry-level 1.1-litre Ti-VCT

3-cylinder petrol engine is surprisingly quiet and powerful enough for town, but we’d recommend one of the 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engines, with 100PS, 125PS or 140PS, since they provide excellent performance and refinement. There’s also a

Energy alert in Portugal

IF you’re planning to take your car across the border to Portugal any time soon you may want to make sure you have a full tank of fuel before you get there, as the country is running out of petrol and diesel. This is as a result of a transport drivers’ strike which has been ongoing since the begin-ning of the month and has resulted in over 1,500 filling stations running out of fuel at the pumps and closing their forecourts. The scenes of panic among motorists may

remind people of the tanker drivers’ strike in the UK in 2012, resulting in empty pumps in a worryingly short time. In Portugal the problem is countrywide but particularly serious in tourist hotspots Lisbon and the Algarve. surprisingly sporty 1.5-litre TDCi 120HP with 270Nm torque diesel, for long distance drivers. With a huge range of trim levels, a good selection of engines, great driving dynamics and the latest safety technology, the Ford Fiesta does everything a small hatchback needs to do – and does it well. It’s also

wellpriced and wellmade, so expect to see it at the top of the sales charts for a few more years to come. Significantly, after all the trouble with Getrag Powershift dry clutch packs, Ford has reverted to a “6-speed torque converter automatic” for the 2018 Fiesta.

Two thirds of the city’s streets will have a 30kmph limit as all single lane roads will have that as a maximum speed. All the new measures, 55 in total, were approved at a ple-nary session last week and are expected to gain final sign off at the end of the month before coming into force.

HELP´S SPRING FAYRE The

Postbag

THERE was entertainment aplenty at the recent Help Vega Baja Spring Fayre staged outside the Casa de la Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas, which netted over 540 euros to help local families in need. The weather was sunny, if on the breezy side, but that didn´t stop anybody from enjoying the Terri Horvarth Morris Dancers and The Enthusiasticals singing group.

Despite some initial hysteria in the media over the far right, votes for both the general election and Valencian parliament were strongly in favour of moderate parties, and I for one am very happy that the status quo is likely to be maintained in Madrid and Valencia for the next four years. Jack Holden, Denia.

GENTLE STROLL

Having been in Spain for 15 years, I´ve found it incredible that nothing has been done about the number of prostitutes peddling their wares on roundabouts in my area, or just standing on street corners. These women often are non-Spaniards and are probably working for gangs that are exploiting them and treating them dreadfully, if stories over the years are anything to go by. I welcome the news that the Socialists and prime minister Pedro Sanchez, have vowed to ban prostitution, though I was surprised to read that it was not in itself illegal, as opposed to pimping. But why in the year 2019 has it taken so long for something to be done about it?

by Alex Trelinski ALMOST 30 members of the Torrevieja U3A Easy Walkers group took in the splendours of the local countryside recently alongside the banks of the River Segura near Benejuzar. The walkers strolled towards Lo Seco, and then after a lunch break, headed back towards to Algorfa on a bright and slightly breezy day. The group is just one example of activities open to all members of the Torrevieja U3A, and to learn more, go to the website, torreviejau3a. org

WAR ON WEEDS by Alex Trelinski A push to get rid of weeds and dead plants from the roadsides of the Orihuela Costa has been launched by Orihuela council. Over 21 thousand euros has been allocated for the four week project which is seeing five gardeners working on roads around the area, which will also include the use of weed killer sprays. Infrastructure councillor Juan Ignacio LópezBas said that the area had been “zoned” to get the maximum coverage and value out of the monthlong contract.

Lucy Ballard, San Miguel de Salinas. The recent wet Easter weekend was disappointing for my friends who had come over from the UK to stay with us and to get their first taste of Spain, and of course all of the sunshine! One positive note though was that their hire car suffered a puncture in Torrevieja, and though the tyre change(when it was not raining) went well, they were pleasantly surprised to to find a local police car pulled over, and offered a helping hand should they have needed it. Brian Humphries, Torrevieja. I would like to take issue with one of your contributors who penned a letter which you published a fortnight ago(issue 89) demanding that the UK Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, should “get off the fence” over Brexit. I have nothing but praise for Mr. Manley and his team members across Spain who have continually offered the facts, plain and simple, over what expats here should expect, without the level of bar gossip that some people take as fact, and is even printed in some of the newspapers over here, Jean Wilkinson, Benidorm.

More than a hobby: The relaxing, fun, healthy history of puzzles

Just try to walk by an unfinished jigsaw puzzle without stopping. It’s almost impossible. In fact, nearly half of all Americans puzzle for fun, to relax or to relieve stress.

seniors puzzle for a brain boost. It may feel like puzzling is one of many retro activities in vogue again, but it has always been in fashion.

Here are some fun facts Families puzzle together you might not know about as a tradition. Millennials the always-fashionable hobpuzzle to connect with each by: other and disconnect from a hyper-digital lifestyle, while 1. Puzzles in ancient

times. Puzzling has been around since the dawn of time (almost). Greek mathematician Archimedes puzzled around 250 B.C. to solve geometry problems. He cut a square into 14 pieces, then examined how many different configurations could be made from those pieces. This puzzle was recently solved by Bill Cutler, a mathematician from Cornell University, who showed the puzzle has 536 truly distinct solutions.

zles of maps. In fact, the “Geographical Puzzle” was the first wooden puzzle produced in 1891 by the puzzle maker Ravensburger.

for adults became popular around 1900, and by 1908 puzzles were a staple of the upper class. Why upper class? Wooden puzzles were expensive, typically costing 3. A puzzling craze $5 each (or $140 today). sweeps the nation. Puzzles For working people, who

earned an average of $50 per month, puzzles would have been a luxury. Over time, cardboard puzzles became a less expensive option, making puzzling available to everyone.

2. The first jigsaw puzzle. Engraver and mapmaker John Spilsbury is credited with inventing the first jigsaw puzzle in 1767. He drew a map on top of a piece of wood, then used a jigsaw to cut it into small pieces. The name clearly stuck! Kids today still learn geography by using jigsaw puz-

My sciatica isn’t getting any better! After weeks or months with painkillers and anti-inflammatory treatment the pain is still there. It’s important to have a correct diagnosis to be able to assess the problem correctly. That is where most treatments fail before even starting. If you are suffering from pain that doesn’t go past the back of your knee (gluteus and hamstring pain) or pain on the front of the thigh, it’s more than likely that you haven’t got sciatica symptoms but are

suffering from some other disorders that are mentioned further down. In most cases these symptoms have a very simple solution with osteopathic treatment and patients recover very well. Sciatica is a series of symptoms (lower back, gluteus and leg pain, numbness or tingling, weakness…) and not an actual diagnosis, that can be caused by a series of different things. What most people understand is that there is a compression

of the sciatic nerve caused by the inflammation generated by a prolapsed or herniated intervertebral disc that irritates the nerve and therefore causes pain. In this case medication is necessary to help reduce the inflammation and a correct osteopathic treatment is needed to improve the situation and prevent it from returning. But there are many other things that can cause sciatica-type pain: • There are muscles that can compress the sci-

atic nerve. • Many muscles themselves can give pain around the lower back all the way down to the ankle or even on the front of the thigh and knee. • Certain ligaments and joints can also refer pain around the lower back and down the back of the leg. • Osteoarthritis of the lower back can also have an effect that is similar to that of a herniated intervertebral disc. In cases like these anti-inflammatory treatment and painkillers aren’t a solution because they don’t treat the problem, they cover up the symptoms which can then return later on. That’s why treating the source of the pain helps you recover from the disorder. There are various treatments that can help improve or cure these problems such as: • Osteopathic manipulations to unblock cer-

tain vertebrae that may be rotated or lacking movement • Osteopathic manipulations to unblock and improve the mobility of the sacroiliac joints or the sacrum which have a big influence on the sciatic nerve • Treatment of muscle trigger points using manual treatment such as pressure, stretching , massage. • Treatment of muscle trigger points applying dry needling with acupuncture needles or electro-acupuncture. • Neuromeningeal manipulation to restore mobility to the nerve therefore improving its functionality . • Cra-

nial-sacral therapy to help restore the meninges (layers of membranes that envelope the central nervous system). All these treatments are very effective but only work if there is a correct diagnosis of the disorder. It is important to visit your doctor and your osteopath to evaluate and make a correct diagnosis. This article was provided by Simon Ratcliffe, Osteopath, Family Medical Centre, 966 865 072

Now, you might want to stop reading this little piece instantly, if you hate the Eurovision Song Contest, but don’t worry it will all be over in two weeks time. If you’re still with me, then I’m guessing you have a smidgen of interest in what has now officially become the second most watched annual event on the planet, behind Superbowl. With just a couple of weeks to go, the performers are beginning to arrive in Tel Aviv ahead of finals week, with much teeth baring and soul searching from commentators who believe the competition should be boycotted because of Israel’s continuing atrocities on Palestine. However, the contest will go ahead as planned, with hot favourites Netherlands,

Russia, Sweden and Italy, all sending male solo performers to represent them. Queen of pop, Madonna will take to the stage to perform whilst the voting takes place and is expected to sing her new single Medellin and one other number. Oh, and the UK, will give a valiant performance and probably only get a few ‘Brexit weary’ points, but it’s all ok, because Graham Norton is doing the BBC commentary and Rylan Clark is doing his ‘Dream job’ of reading out the UK’s votes, so that’s 2 gays for the price of one. So, that’s all the Eurovision you need to know for now …… more news next week!

e i t a K , e s a e l p e r o m The Blanket’s off No There are times, when you look at someone in the public eye and you think to yourself, why hasn’t anyone stopped her before it’s too late.

My, hasn’t he got Bigi You may be the youngest son of one of the most controversial figures in pop music, but it’s still nice to have a night out with your brother and mates every now and then. And so it was, this week, when Blanket, now know as Bigi, the youngest of Michael Jackson’s three kids, made a rare outing with older sibling Prince to see Avengers:Endgame at a local cinema. It’s been so long since he was seen in public that fans of the late singer began to wonder

whether Blanket was in fact a figment of his slightly loony dad’s imagination. But there he was for all to see, now aged 17, looking every inch an archetypal tall, lanky, moody teenager in black jeans and Marvel t-shirt. I have to admit, he could have walked past me in Aldi and I wouldn’t have known who he was. In fact I don’t recall seeing a picture of Bigi, ever since his dad scared everyone by dangling him over a balcony when he was very smalli.

Katie’s hair was matted with blood.

Endgame on the throne

Having recently admitted I’ve never been able to sit through an episode of Game of Thrones without falling asleep, I’ve been amazed by this weeks outpourings on facebook about some lengthy battle that took place in this interminable final series. And now, I have to own up to not having a clue what the new movie that’s breaking all box office records across the world is all about. Yes, that’s the one, Avengers:Endgame, which has made a staggering $1.2 billion (£927.6 million) over its extended opening weekend, breaking a startling number of other box office records in the process. US industry magazine The Wrap has counted 144 box office records broken so far, with the movie demolishing everything from advance ticket sales to opening weekend records around the world.

The movie is actually the culmination of 22 films so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing together strands of a story established by the first Iron Man movie, directed by Jon Favreau back in 2008 and I’ve seen none of them, in fact the only Avengers I was aware of were, John Steed, Emma Peel and Cathy Gale. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, DanaiGurira, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Brolin – and many, many more Endgame is already standing at number 18 in the all time Box Office takings list, after just one weekend on release. Now, should I join in and play catch up with the previous 21 movies, or try and start at the beginning of Game of Thrones? ….. That’s a conundrum!

Avengers Endgame breaking all records

A case in point is Katie Price, who was pictured earlier this week, returning after a4 day trip to Turkey, during which she underwent another round of cosmetic

surgery, on her already semi-plastic body. This time, she apparently had more than one procedure, including bum implants, liposuction and surgery on her eyebrows and eyelids, in one day. The photos of the forty year old celebrity, showed her being pushed through Istanbul Airport in a wheelchair, about to board a flight back home. There was no doubt from her appearance, with blood matted hair, puffed up face, raised eyebrows and dark circles under her eyes that the procedure had been pretty invasive and she was even carrying bottles of her own blood. Although Katie goes to great pains to assure her fans she is not addicted to cosmetic surgery, one does wonder whether she really does want to look like an alien. Such a shame that one of her entourage doesn’t take her to one side and say “Oi, Pricey, no more …Enough is enough!!”

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Creating a yard that is dog-friendly is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. However there are several mistakes that owners commonly make. By avoiding the following pitfalls you can help to increase your chances of ending up with a space that’s perfectly suited for your pet’s needs. Material Matters While hard materials such as stone or concrete offer many advantages for humans, they aren’t ideal for canines. Instead your dog’s play and rest area should have a semi-soft surface underfoot. This is ideal for joints and helps to prevent injuries. For this reason many owners use grass or artificial turf in their dog-friendly yards. Pet-safe woodchips are often used as well and when drainage is a concern tiles made from rubber can work too. Overlooking The Importance Of A Fence While fencing can be expensive, knowing

that your pet is safe is priceless. Even if your pooch is superbly trained and has never wandered out of your yard, you will still want a solid barrier such as a fence. Don’t skimp out. If a fence keeps your dog in just once, it’s already paid for itself. And with one you won’t have to worry about your pet causing damage, getting lost, or hit by a car. A strong fence will also keep other animals and strays out. Forgetting To Create A Toilet Area For many dog owners one of the biggest drawbacks of owning a canine is dealing with the waste. And setting up a specific area in their yard for their dog to go to the bathroom is therefore often overlooked. This is a mistake which can quickly lead to waste being spread out all over the yard. By teaching your pooch to go in a designated area that’s both convenient to clean up and out of the way, waste will no longer be a problem. Most owners of male dogs will also add a pee post in this area which helps to keep them from raising their leg in other spots and therefore causing urine damage. Many posts

today are designed to look just like hydrants you’d see in the city. The dog and fire hydrant have a special relationship which makes adding one quite a conversation starter. Just be sure you use your post or dog fire hydrant for yard areas that do not tend to flood. Underestimating The Power Of Breed Every dog is different and like people they have unique personalities. However when designing a dog-friendly yard it’s actually quite common for owners to underestimate the influence that breed can have on a dog’s behavior. And they therefore fail to plan accordingly. Each dog breed was developed for a specific purpose and therefore is genetically predisposed to certain behavioral characteristics. Because of this many dogs, such as retrievers for instance, tend to jump

right into pools and ponds. Hunting breeds often chase small animals and follow their scents. And terriers may not think twice about digging up your garden or lawn. Even if a pet has never displayed breed behaviors before it’s very important that you design your yard, and especially fencing, with them in mind in order to prevent potential problems. Not Giving Your Pet A Space All His Own While your pet will usually want to be in on the action, you should provide him with a place to get away from it all as well. Sometimes pets just want to be alone and take a snooze. You’ll need to give him an area or shelter where he can keep cool and escape weather extremes as well. Including a spot where your pets can dig, roll around in the dirt, and just be a dog is often a great idea too.

ALL IN A SPIN

This month, Almoradi Scrabble Club celebrated its third year. Amazing. Thanks go to Maria and Chas for their kind hospitality over the three years. Scrabble players were able to trial the new spinners that Phil kindly made for the scrabble boards. It certainly didn’t put Karen’s head into a spin, as she scored an amazing 540 in one game, setting a new record for any one player. Deservedly she was presented with a bottle of wine and an overwhelming applause by all the players and

onlookers. Karen, as modest as normal, said she had been lucky, but being able to lay FOUR ‘seven lettered words’ in one game, is no mean feat. So a huge well done to Karen. Another well done went to Sandra, who won the challenge round, which this month was based on words linked to ‘three’ or ‘year’. Her word “trio” was most appropriate. Next month’s

CBYA Machos win Leisure Section Mirador Challenge

The CBYA Machos (comprising Team Leader, Gary Mudge, with Peter English, Rick Rihan, Tammy de Boer and Mike Cross) won the Leisure Section with an amazingly fast time on the bonus section (Mirador La Falzia > Mirador Creu del Portitxol) , 6th fastest time overall, and with only one mistake on the Mirador photograph identification task!

Congratulations to the CBYA Machos for establishing a new record for the Leisure section, previously held by the Sports Section team ‘Correcaminos’. The CBYA teams have raised 750 Euros towards their CBYA-supported charities which comprise Make-a-Smile, APASA, the Bomberos and the Guardian Angels!

Local Sports Great Weather – at last Sunday 28th April and SAMM’s sailors at last were blessed with great racing weather which encouraged the best turnout this year, 18 competitors sailing in 10 boats. First race: All 10 boats got off to a fine start with 8 vying to be first away. With a light 8 knot wind the boats soon spread out and the race was without incident, except for the support boat getting in the way on the finish line, preventing the race control getting a clear sight when one of the Gambas was finishing. Second race: With the wind now at 1314 knots the start was dramatic, the Ome-

ga flying over the line with Topaz in hot pursuit and Cuatro, with a damaged rudder, struggling to catch up. The racing was complicated by the presence of swimmers in the water and another sailing school interfering with the course. Every lap saw at least two boats vying for the finish line with only seconds between them. Again, no incidents during a fiercely contested but friendly and close run race. Winners: First race, Julian Singleton in the Topaz. Second race, Derek Howe and Ian Sinclair in Mistral. For details of SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com

HOMEWARD BOUND by Alex Trelinski

The 2019 Moto GP season pays the first of four visits to Spain this year, with the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto hosting Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix. Surprisingly, Spain´s world champion Marc Marquez is not in the top three standings after the first three races, with Italy´s Andrea Dovizioso leading the way, as last year´s championship runner-up sits three points ahead of Valentino Rossi and third-placed Spaniard, Alex Rins, who pulled off a shock MotoGP win in AustIn, Texas. There´s no doubt that

Marquez will be pumped up to get his second win of the season on Sunday in front of a home crowd on a Jerez circuit that many fans record as the world´s Moto GP capital. The Spaniard has won in front of his fellow countrymen twice, last year and back in 2014, but the last time the same rider won in Jerez two years in succession was his team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in 2010 and 2011. In a wide open start to the 2019 campaign, absolutely anything can, and probably will happen this Sunday!

BIG ANDY STEPS IN

Britain´s world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will face American Andy Ruiz Jr in New York on June 1st. Joshua was due to face Jarrell Miller at Madison Square Garden but the American failed drug tests, forcing him out of the bout. California-born Ruiz, 29, has fought for a world title once before

by Alex Trelinski

with promoter Eddie Hearn saying that Ruiz will “do anything” to become world champion, as he tries to get Joshua´s three world belts. “He will entertain you, give it his all. Even if it means getting sensationally knocked out, he will rather do that than not do it,” commented Hearn.

SPANISH GRAND PRIX LOSS by Alex Trelinski

Spanish Formula 1 fans are set for a huge blow with the news that the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona will be scrapped from next year, with the Dutch circuit at Zandvoort taking over. Barcelona is one of five circuits with expiring contracts at the end of 2019, along with Silverstone, Hockenheim, Monza and Mexico City. Autosport magazine reports that a lack of Spanish and Catalan government support means that the Spanish F1 race is pretty much doomed, and that in the wake of Max Verstappen’s recent success, momentum has been building for F1 to return to the Netherlands for the first time since 1985. Assen was also in the frame at one stage, before dropping out, with a senior source telling Autosport that a contract has been agreed between F1 and the Zandvoort promote, with the race being slotted in early May next year ahead of Monaco.

The Spanish FA has approved significant changes to the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup formats for the 2019/20 season and beyond. The Copa del Rey switches to a single-match format, with the exception of the semi-finals, which remain a two-leg tie.

by Alex Trelinski

Teams involved in the Spanish Super Cup - Barcelona, Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid - will not have to participate in the first two rounds of the Copa, with the final held earlier next year on April 18th, 2020.

As previously hinted, the Super Cup will change from a match between the league winners and the cup winners to a four-team competition between both Spanish Cup finalists and the top two in La Liga, and will be staged in early January, possibly out of Spain with Saudi Arabia mooted as a venue.

CFI GO SECOND

ALL TIMES GIVEN ARE SPANISH TIME

VINCE IN CUP FRAME The tight battle for two of the Preferente Group Four play-off positions is set to go to the proverbial wire with three matches left, and just a point between second and fourth-place. With leaders CF Intercity failing to officially book their play-off slot by losing three-two at UD Ilicitana, CFI Alicante put their heads above the chasing pack to go second after thrashing CD Torrevieja five-nil away(match action pictured, CFI

in blue), with Torry relegated as their third division days of not long so long ago, appear to be a dim and distant memory. Hercules B have the same number of points as CFI Alicante, after drawing one-one in the big match of the weekend at Villajoyosa CF, who remain a point behind them. At the bottom, Villena join Torrevieja in being relegated, with Aspe UD hot

favourites to join them, after losing four-two at Redovan, and are seven points behind Benidorm CD, who realistically guaranteed their status by beating Benferri threeone, with a trip to leaders Intercity to look forward to. CFI Alicante have a tricky match at home to CD Thader, who beat Alicante University two-one, with Hercules at home to Redovan, whilst there´s not the simplest of trips for Villajoyosa to Elda,

PILAŔ S RACE DAY Batsman James Vince has the chance to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad after being called up for the one-day series against Pakistan, which starts next week. Vince replaces Alex Hales who was withdrawn from the preliminary World Cup squad after being suspended for an “off-field incident”, with England

by Alex Trelinski

having until May 23rd to finalise their squad for the tournament. England play Ireland in Malahide, near Dublin today in a ODI contest before taking on Pakistan in a Twenty20 match at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens on Sunday. Opener Jason Roy is out

of both games because of a back spasm and will continue to receive treatment before meeting up with squad before the five-match Pakistan one-day series, which starts at The Oval on Wednesday- their last competitive action before their World Cup campaign starts against South Africa on May 30th.

Over a thousand runners from Alicante Province and the Murcia region competed in last Saturday´s tenth staging of the Pilar de la Horadada Half Marathon and 10 K race. Local Pilar runner Iván Hernández Illán won the Half Marathon for the fourth time, whilst the

women´s race was won by Wafiya Benali from Puerto Lumbreras. A familiar name, Antonio Martinez Ardil, won the 10 K event for the third successive year, whilst Neus Mas Manchon was victorious in the women´s category.

POINT OF NO RETURN A fantastic Lionel Messi goal left Liverpool´s season in tatters on Wednesday night, as Barcelona won their Champions League showdown three-nil, meaning the Reds realistically having to win at Newcastle tomorrow night to stop Manchester City regaining the Premier League title at home to Leicester on Monday. The Reds found Barcelona´s Lionel Messi in sublime form as he popped in his magnificent late free kick for his 600th goal for

by Alex Trelinski

the Catalan side in their Champions League semifinal, first leg win at the Camp Nou. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp described his side´s performance as the best he´s seen away from Anfield in the competition, but a loss at St. James´ Park tomorrow night will see an excellent season for the Reds deliver them absolutely nothing in the trophy cabinet. Tottenham and Chelsea

continue to be in the driving seat to make it into the Premier League top four, with a Saturday lunchtime trip for Spurs to Bournemouth, whilst Chelsea entertain Watford on Sunday. Brighton and Cardiff continue to fight over the final relegation spot, with the Seagulls having a four point advantage. Defeat for the Welsh side at home to Crystal Palace tomorrow will seal their fate, irrespective of Brighton´s tricky Sunday trip to Arsenal.

BARCELONA CHAMPIONS

Barcelona wrapped up their 26th La Liga title last Saturday with a sluggish one-nil victory over Levante thanks to a goal from second-half substitute Lionel Messi.

by Alex Trelinski

The Argentina forward came on at the interval following a goalless first half and scored just after the hour.

He latched on to Arturo Vidal’s header and beat two defenders before stroking the ball past Aitor Fernandez. It´s Barcelona´s fourth La Liga title in five years, and

the tenth overall for Messi, doing so with three games to spare and closing the gap on Real Madrid’s record of 33 La Liga titles to seven.
