LOVE TRIANGLE BRITS RELEASED ON BAIL European arrest warrant issued for 26-year-old Irishman, Simon Fahy TWO BRITISH women arrested in February after a man’s body was found close to the AP-7 highway near Rojales, have been granted bail after spending over two months in jail. The love-triangle killing saw model Mily Leonard and bar manager Natalie Edwards remanded into custody after the Guardia Civil found Irish national Carl Carr buried in a shallow grave in January, after he died in a Torrevieja apartment in September The Guardia believe Carr was killed the same day after a night out, before his body was dumped off the AP-7 and buried alongside bleach used in a cleanup operation to hide the crime. The two women were remanded in custody on suspicion of concealment after appearing before a Torrevieja judge at the start of February, but have been freed after posting bail of up to 20 thousand euros each.

A third woman, an unnamed British national, was arrested on suspicion of making a false statement and remains under investigation, but was not jailed. Carr is believed to have been battered to death with a knuckleduster by house mate Wayne Walsh, after he had a relationship with Walsh´s exgirlfriend, Mily Leonard, whilst Natalie Edwards was said to be Walsh´s current girlfriend Walsh remains in custody,
along with a Spaniard, whilst a European arrest warrant was issued for a 26-year-old Irishman, Simon Fahy, who is accused of covering up the crime, but has disappeared after initially taunting authorities on social media.

THERE was an outpouring of grief and sympathy after an 84 year old British woman, a long term resident of Javea, jumped off a bridge in the town in what now appears to be a case of suicide. W i t n e s s e s , including staff at the “Weekender” office in the Marina Alta town, saw several police cars and firemen race to the port at around 7.00 on Tuesday evening, followed quickly after by two ambulances.

The Guardia Civil later confirmed that an 84 year old Briton had jumped off the bridge at Avenida de Augusta and added that she had almost certainly intended to take her own life. She lived close to the spot where she died and had done so for several years, the spokesperson said. Local expatriates and Spaniards alike expressed their sadness on social media.

SPAIN´S POPULATION has gone over 47 million for the first time in six years, boosted by foreigners moving to the country, with officiallyregistered British nationals falling to just under a quarter of a million. The figures from the National Institute of Statistics are based on returns up to January 1st, and show that despite pleas and campaigns from the British embassy in Madrid and local authorities, the number of British people registered on local padrons continues to fall. The padrons are used to calculate population statistics and local council budgetary grants, with Moroccans continuing to be the largest

national group of nonSpaniards, totalling 812,412, followed by Romanians, who make up 669,434, and Brits third at 249,015. That British figure is down from statistics quoted over the last year as showing around 280 thousand Brits registered on local padrons, with a British embassy official recently stating that “tens of thousands of people are living under the radar”. Nearly nine million people are aged over 65 in Spain, with the over-65s making up 19.3 per cent of the population, whilst foreigners account for just over 10.7 per cent of people, or
around five million. British nationals living in Spain are the oldest of nonSpanish residents, with an average age of 53.6, followed by the Germans at 49.2 and the French at 42.6. In terms of proportion rather than number, the Balearic Islands are the ‘most foreign’ region, with 17.8 per cent of inhabitants being non-Spanish; Catalunya has the secondhighest foreigner ratio, at 15.1 per cent, followed by the Murcia region on 14.1 per cent. Non-Spaniards have not broken the five million barrier since 2014, but the number of new “foreigners” in 2018 was nearly double the figure for 2017.

Red card for rowdy Brit footballers THE Guardia Civil were at Alicante airport to greet 25 members of a British football team as they touched down at Alicante airport last week. The pilot on the Easyjet flight reported bad behaviour from them when he was in the air, requesting the presence of the Guardia when the plane landed. The officers were waiting at the landing bay when the flight arrived just before 11 in the evening and then forcibly removed 25 of the group, part of a contingent of 40 players, staff and fans. Witnesses said they were clearly under heavy influence of alcohol and the 25 are expected to be charged with public disorder crimes. However this is more likely to lead to fines than any jail sentence and it is understood that the group have been released. The offenders have not been formally identified
by Simon Russell
by the authorities but are known to be an amateur team from the Bristol area, where the flight had taken off from.
They were said to be drinking alcohol they brought with them during the flight, which is illegal and gives grounds for the charges. Sources say that when the group
were led off by the Guardia the remaining passengers cheered and applauded, indicating the offenders had been extremely disruptive to others on board.

person in the process. The incident happened in northern Alicante City last weekend when police were called to the scene. Witnesses said that
the 58 year old man had started shooting from his balcony after earlier threatening people with the weapon. After he began firing several pellets missed but one person was hit in the leg. The police of-
ficers searched the accused’s apartment and found an air rifle which was sufficient evidence to arrest and charge him. The defendant has been released on bail and is subject to a restraining order.

All my readers should consider attending one of these essential events
Every week Chorus publish articles to help Brits here in Spain navigate safely and securely through areas such as investing, retirement planning, pension transfers, succession planning, tax and legal matters. This week I felt my column inches would be even better served by telling you all about a very important series of seminars that are returning to our area on May8th, 9th and 10th, which cover all these important subjects. One of the most common pieces of feedback I’ve experienced over the years from thousands of expats here in Spain is that sometimes it’s hard to know
who to believe when it comes to vital information regarding your pensions, investments and tax planning. You can ask 3 people a question and you get 3 different answers, and often this means people are getting information on critical subjects from social media or a guy at the bar! The Finance Tour returns to Spain for the third year, bringing experts from FTSE listed UK institutions, to answer your questions directly. The seminars start with a short presentation from each company, followed by an open Q+A. At the end of the session, you can enjoy a
coffee whilst having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel of experts. For those who already hold investments like ISAs, UK bonds/ platforms, QROPS/Spanish Investment Bonds, this gives you a great opportunity to ensure your product is appropriate and working for you in the best way. For those considering a new pension transfer or investment or trying to understand matters such as Wealth Tax or IHT here in Spain, this is an unprecedented opportunity to speak directly with the product providers before you go ahead
and seek independent advice. I appreciate there seems to be a different seminar, breakfast meeting or event nearly every week in Spain, but The Finance Tour is truly unique in that it gives you the chance to hear directly from a group of trusted companies who manage the pensions and investments of over 25 million customers worldwide. Look out for The Finance Tour’s adverts in page 15 of the Weekender or visitwww.thefinancetour.com for bookings and information. We really hope to see as many of you as possible at these essential events.

THE Alpha 1 helicopter that is used for mountain rescues in the Marina Alta area was required for an emergency while it was still dealing with another incident at the weekend. near Benitatxell. Her leg injuries meant that the 50 year old was unable to walk, and the helicopter then came to her aid after dropping the first victim off. Last Sunday was predicted to be a busy day for the emergency services as it was the warmest one of the year so far and more people than usual were out and about.

WALKS FREE AN Italian national accused of raping a minor on a cruise ship visiting Spain waters has been released without charge as the man had no connection to Spain. The alleged assault took place on a ship sailing between Mallorca and Valencia last week when the man approached the 17 year old British girl who was travelling with her parents. It is alleged he sexually abused her in a cabin and was arrested after the incident was reported. The arrest was made in Valencia after the ship docked in the city but the presiding judge said he had no choice but to release the man as he was not Spanish and had no property, residency or other connection with the country. Thief´s puncture nail.
A THIEF who punctured dfghzdg car tyres in a plan to rob people who had just withdrawn money from banks in the Mar Menor area, has been arrested by the Murcia region Guardia Civil. The unnamed man was wanted by authorities for numerous similar crimes, including a spate further north in Villajoyosa, in a well-honed routine that has been practised by other thieves across Spain. The crook would watch banks around San Javier and he would wait to see if customers were exiting the premises with a bag. His stake-outs was often at the start of each month when business owners would be walking out with workers wages. 180 years for child porn by Simon Russell
AN Alicante court has sentenced a man to 180 years in prison after he was found guilty of 38 crimes of producing and distributing pornographic material featuring minors. The FBI had been originally tracking the man and then transferred the case to the Guardia Civil which launched its own investigation. This led to the arrest of the 36 year old defendant last year who had been luring minors through social networks. The videos were described as “especially humiliating and degrading” and were distributed through an online network. Despite the seeming life sentence, under the Spanish legal system the accused is unlikely to serve more than 18 years in jail.

HOME CROOKS CAUGHT by Alex Trelinski
A COLUMBIAN gang that robbed homes across Spain including properties in Alicante and Valencia provinces has been arrested and put in front of a Torrevieja judge. The group consisted of five men and a woman, with four of them refused bail after their court appearance. The gang is said to be behind dozens of crimes locally and nationally including Madrid, Toledo, Lugo, Cuenca, and Valladolid, with the two ringleaders based in a small Madrid area town. Last December, the gang targetted a property in Guardamar, only to be surprised to find the owner inside, who was then stabbed in his arm by a screwdriver. The crooks fled the house and fled in a getaway car that was waiting for them.

Quick thinking police save life LOCAL Police in Alicante, who were called out for what was originally thought to be a man who had suffered a knife wound, had to act quickly to save the victim’s life. Officers from the Fast Intervention Group were alerted at around 7pm last Friday and found the 39 year old lying in a pool of blood surrounded by building equipment at a property in the del Remedio area. He had an extremely nasty wound in his arm and

World News World’s most dangerous bird claims a victim A cassowary unlikely killer.
BIRDS kill a handful of people each year, usually after collisions with cars or aeroplanes while avian flu threatened to develop into an epidemic after crossing over to humans. However the sub-category of the bird deaths mortality tables (if there is such a thing, and there probably is) of people killed by actual bird attacks is so small as to be virtually unmeasurable. It now seems that the actuaries or whoever measures these things may have to dust off their records, as this week a 75 year old Florida man was killed
by his pet cassowary, an ostrich type creature dubbed The Worlds Most Dangerous Bird (my capitals). The victim, named as Marvin Hajos, was found in his pet’s enclosure in a pool of blood with deep lacerations caused by the creature. He was still alive but sadly died later in hospital from his wounds. It is believed that the unfortunate Mr Hajos tripped when feeding the cassowary which then attacked him, feeling threatened. They weigh up to 60 kilos and grow to about six feet tall and a spokesman for
a local zoo said that they “can slice any predator open with their talons or even kill them with a well aimed kick”. Despite the somewhat worrying threat of disembowelment or being kicked to death, the only other confirmed cassowary killing was almost a century ago in their native Australia that of a small boy who was teasing one. This case highlights the fact that whatever you think of the good people of America, they are certainly adept at coming up with original ways to shuffle off this mortal coil.

The nature of these has led the investigators to believe he may have been paid by someone else to murder the woman. Business & Finance Jumbo bill for giant of the skies
The giant plane dwarves vehicles on the runway.
A Russian Antonov, one of the world’s largest cargo planes, has been parked at Alicante airport since the end of March, something the airport is charging over a thousand euros a day for the privilege of. The plane, from the Ivory Coast, landed on 28 March without cargo and has not yet set a departure
date. “Parking fees” are calculated on the weight of the craft and duration of the stopover, meaning that the owners have clocked up a bill of over €20,000 to date. Apparently the plane is awaiting instructions for loading and is then capable of flying anywhere in the world. The Antonov has a capacity of 150 tons and can
also carry 88 passengers but to give an idea of the size of the cargo an Antonov was used to transport yachts for the Volvo World Tour and can also carry helicopters. This is only the second time an aircraft of this size has been at Alicante-Elche airport although the last visitor, another Antonov, only stayed for a few hours.
White elephant finally taking off VALENCIA’S third airport, Castellon, which was previously the butt of many jokes after opening without any passengers or flights, is rapidly turning things around. Referred to as “the ghost airport” by the Spanish press, it sat empty for almost five years after it

Sleep at night investing?
I often hear from my clients, “I am not being greedy, I just want to see a decent return on my money without taking too much risk”. In other words, I do not want to see large fluctuations and have any stock market shocks with my investments in the future. Most people want to see a return higher than inflation and higher than the banks can provide, and risk means different things to different people and we are all well aware of that. It is simply not possible to invest without taking some degree of risk. However, there are people who simply cannot cope with the ups and downs of the share markets and simply feel better off staying with the bank, even if that means watching their money get eaten by inflation.
This is usually because they may feel that any investment product is complicated, difficult to understand and a potentially rocky ride, so somewhat scary. Ultimately they are cautious investors.
So is there something that can alleviate these concerns? You may remember life companies in the UK offering products that use funds with a smoothing effect of returns? Returns that provide the potential to beat inflation and interest rates over the medium term. Well, even if you don’t know or remember then let me explain. There is a simple investment solution offered by a well-known UK life company and it´s available to UK Expats here in Spain. The life company balance the investments in such a way that the risk is kept to a minimum. Investors in the fund can then feel comfort in knowing that if the
17
share markets take a tumble it is likely they will feel a ripple rather than a large wave, therefore allowing more peace of mind. We cannot predict that these funds will never go down in value, and of course, past performance is by no means a prediction of future performance, however, we can say that this extremely well known UK life company has a good pedigree of past successes. If you are a cautious investor concerned about inflation or the behaviour of your current investments and wish to find out about investing in this product, please contact me by email Andrew.gibson@blacktowerfm. com or call me on 603 612 464. A Weekend in Berlin by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Berlin is the capital of Germany and a great place to spend a long weekend. This cool and cultural city is chock full of historical places to visit. Even during a chilly winter grey weekend, it holds a certain magic. David Bowie, the 1970’s artist, said “Berlin, the
greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine”.
His most famous album “Heroes” was recorded in Berlin in 1977 and was dark and atmospheric like the city’s history. The actual song was inspired by Bowie noticing a couple kissing standing by the Berlin Wall. Now, in 2019, visiting the city for the first time, I find myself thinking back, as I am sure that so many do, to where I was at the moment of when the Berlin Wall was toppled. In fact, the area where you find what remains of the Berlin Wall is a little off the main tourist track, not on the tourist bus routes and the Wall itself stands rather lost, lonely and tawdry. Yet the fact that it was such a strong symbol, a physical and political reminder of a divided city for so many years (1961 to 1989), means that even on a dark, cold sleeting night, it carries magic and fascination all of its own. This 1316 m section of the Wall,
located near the centre, on Muhlenstrasse in FriedrichshainKreuzberg is now known as the East Side Gallery. In 1990 the east side of the Wall was painted with 105 paintings by artists from all over the world. It is now one of the most famous openair art installations in the world, and well worth the quick diversion for the visit. It is, of course, free, and is illuminated at night. So, for a weekend in cool Berlin, where should you stay? This writer stayed in a southeastern borough of Berlin towards Berlin Schonefeld Airport, called Neukolln. It is an attractive, creative and trendy area. There are art galleries, vintage fashion, numerous kebab shops and hip boutiques. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but this is the largest city in Germany and there is something for everyone in terms of areas to stay. For those who like somewhere relatively central, easy to get to with the inexpensive ubiquitous ubers that are everywhere and with the best bakeries, this is perfect and affordable. Faced with only a weekend break and so much to see, there is only one option, a Hop On Hop Off Bus. Especially if visiting on a sleeting freezing cold day. There are various options available and do not be put off by some of the reviews on the internet stating they are not worth taking in Berlin. In the writer’s opinion, regardless of the weather, there is so much to see spread over a large area, these buses circulating the city on a particular route with designated stops are perfect for jumping on and off to visit attractions (most tours last 2-3 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to simply stay on the whole tour from start to finish as much can be seen from the actual bus and the narrative is in
s e vera l languages. Many tours have an excellent English-speaking guide who makes history come alive with facts and anecdotes. A suggested starting place for a tour (and also a place to potentially stay) is probably the most important square in Berlin, Alexanderplatz, full of shops, restaurants, a transport hub and always busy with its iconic 1960’s TV tower. You can pay on the bus and many of the top tourist attractions you will see correspond to the second world war and post-war. Checkpoint Charlie, for example, was the main crossing point between east and west Berlin following the division of the city and the Wall being built. Now it is somewhat underwhelming but is it is not too much a stretch of the imagination to picture the queues and officials standing there from years ago. By contrast, the modern Reichstag with its huge glass dome appears impressive and the Brandenburg Gate, even in driving sleet, is a historical symbol of peace and the past. Berlin also has greenery and beauty in the form of the parks and forests, Tiergarten being one of them, and world-class museums. A weekend is not enough time to spend on Museum Island, which is the name of the northern point of an island in the river Spree in Central Berlin, hosting five famous museums and now a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999. If the kids get bored, also on the bus tour itinerary is the Berlin Zoo, one of the most comprehensive collections of endangered animals in the world and rated as one of the best in Europe.

More luxury buyers
Tracking power in the home ANALYSIS by energy experts Selectra has found that people in Murcia spend the most on electricity as a proportion of their income, 3.38%. Andalusian residents are just behind at 3.37% while those in Cantabria are the thriftiest at just 2.19%, although this is more to do with higher average incomes
than actual usage. Electra say that this highlights the issue of “power poverty” where the wealthy and the poor pay more or less the same amount but for those less well off it is a significant chunk of their earnings. The average annual household electric bill in Spain is now €800.74, according to Selectra’s latest figures.

If nothing is done, an automatic extension to long-term leases now operates by law(known as “silent renewal”), the idea being to protect the rights of tenants still further.
To avoid a legal extension, a solicitor needs to draft a formal notice of termination and and serve it to your tenant by recorded delivery within a specified time limit. Needless to say, most buyers just pull out of any deal. For this reason alone, private landlords are recommended to get legal

Housing growth cap on the table THE UK’s Labour Party are considering controversial measures to cap house growth, something they talked about in more detail this week. Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey said that the Bank of England could be asked to control house prices the same way they now do with inflation. How they would go about that isn’t exactly clear, but restrictions on mortgage lending seem the most likely method. The proposals are a response to the rapid
by Simon Russell
growth in UK property prices over the last decade or so, effectively pricing first time buyers and those on lower wages out of the market. A recent think tank reported that the Bank of England should be set a target of zero house price growth for the next five years, allowing many peoples income to catch up with the sector. Obviously many who already own their home as well as free market advocates are likely to oppose the idea.

DNA is a fantastic analysis, which of fic scienti of piece course was sussed out by boffins from Leicester University. It´s not all about tracking down criminals, but can be used for important historical discoveries, like finding out that the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge travelled west across the Mediterranean from where you would find modern day Turkey, before reaching Britain. Researchers in London compared DNA extracted from Neolithic human
remains found in Britain with that of people alive at the same time in Europe. The Neolithic inhabitants appear to have travelled from Anatolia (modern Turkey) to Iberia before winding their way north, and got to Britain around 4,000BC. The migration to Britain was just one part of a general, massive expansion of people out of Anatolia in 6,000BC that introduced farming to Europe, after travelling across the Mediterranean.
DNA reveals that Neolithic Britons were largely descended from groups who took the Mediterranean route, either hugging the coast or hopping from island-to-island on boats before getting to good old Britain. When the researchers analysed the DNA of early British farmers, they found they most closely resembled Neolithic people from Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal). These Iberian farmers were descended from people who had journeyed across the Mediterranean.

SERIOUSLY LORDING IT
THE STUDIO 32 Musical Theatre group´s production of the Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes, hits the stage of San Fulgencio´s Cardenal Belluga theatre at the end of next month. The musical farce is set on board a luxury liner sailing from New York to London in the early thirties, and one of the many colourful characters is Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, a handsome but stuffy and hapless British nobleman played by Nick Morgan. Nick is a very experienced actor and dancer and has appeared in many productions in the UK and in Spain

as a member of Studio 32, with his song, “The Gypsy in Me”, set to be one of the highlights of the production. Charities to benefit from the show include San Fulgencio Alzheimer´s Society and the local music school. Reserved tickets are now on sale, priced 10 euros, and can be obtained by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo. org or calling 744 484 933.
BIG SCHOOL BLAZE
SEVERAL classrooms at the Dama de Guardamar school were destroyed by fire in the early hours of Friday morning. Pupils aged between three and eleven were forced to see out the rest of their preEaster lessons in council buildings between Monday and Wednesday. Firefighters from Almoradi, Orihuela, and Torrevieja put out the blaze which started at around 2.00 am, as a number of prefabricated rooms were raised to the ground.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault, with the buildings erected as a temporary measure nine years ago, with a new school set to be built in the SUP-7 area of the Guardamar municipality. The project is in the Valencian government budgets for 2019, with Guardamar education councillor Pilar Gay saying that drafting work for the building in the SUP-7 area had been completed and that she hoped that a tender announcement “would be imminent soon”.
El Estacio bridge.
SAN JAVIER mayor José Miguel Luengo has repeated a call to replace the Canal El Estacio bridge linking the Mar Menor to La Manga, with a tunnel. The El Estacio bridge is a bascule-designed structure, exactly the same as London´s iconic Tower Bridge, and besides the frequent delays when both sides are lifted up and down, the mechanism has
by Alex Trelinski
been prone to regular breakdowns causing added frustration to road users and maritime traffic. Murcia president Fernando López Miras has now backed Miguel Luengo´s call, and asked San Javier council to produce some plans to replace the bridge, which was opened 16 years ago at a cost of nine million euros.
HELP YOURSELF!
FOUR SQUATTERS who robbed homes in the Torre de la Horadada area to furnish their own illegally occupied property have been arrested by the Guardia Civil, and released on bail.. The Guardia launched an operation in February after a series of robberies were reported in Torre de la Horadada, with the thieves happy to steal from homes close by, including a number on the same street. A range of beds,
furniture, and couches were stolen to fill out the squat, along with officers discovering an array of electric appliances including washing machines, fridges, televisions, toasters, irons, coffee-makers, and DVD players, all of which have been returned to their owners. No further details were provided over the quartet, except for the fact that they are also being looked at for a series of hotel robberies.

PLANE SAILING SAN JAVIER council has been given 200 thousand euros by the Murcia government to advertise the area as a tourist destination based on its aviation connections. After January´s transfer of the regional airport to Corvera, the empty terminal building will be converted to house the 44 vintage aircraft belonging to the Fundacion Infante de Orleans, currently based in the
by Alex Trelinski Madrid area. San Javier council is also looking to create an openair aviation museum, as well continuing with the strong links to the Spanish Air Academy that´s based at the San Javier airfield, which includes the country´s answer to the Red Arows, the Patrulla Águila.
PUIG´S ROAD PLEDGE
The
Postbag Is it just a sheer coincidence but improvements always seem to get done in my area every four years ahead of the local elections? We´ve had some excellent LED street lighting put up, as well as some much-need resurfacing, which has been long overdue for the best part of a decade. On the basis of what´s happened in the last fortnight, can we have a local vote every year? Gareth Hicklin, Los Montesinos. EDITOR:- Many municipalities across Alicante Province are getting some springtime spruce-ups, but as the work signs say across the region, the projects are paid for by grants from the Alicante Provincial Council, and not local authorities trying to “buy” votes.
So we have a potential six extra months dangling on the end of the rope marked Brexit, and probably longer after that, so long as President Macron allows it. Thanks heavens at least that with the Easter holiday, we are getting a break from this non-stop Westminster pantomime, and the recess will allow the politicians to take a deep breath and think about what they are really doing. Puig in Orihuela.
by Alex Trelinski VA L E N C I A N government president Ximo Puig has promised that the CV-95 road between Orihuela and Torrevieja will be upgraded to a dual carriageway, during an election campaign visit to Orihuela City. Puig, of the Socialist PSOE party, is looking for four more years in power in the Valencian regional elections on Sunday April 28th, the same date as the national general election. The president blamed the state of finances inherited
from the previous Partido Popular administration over a lack of progress on expanding the CV95, but promised that the upgrade “would become a reality over the next four years” if he was re-elected. Other election pledges included a 100 million euro investment in a 10 year modernisation plan to improve irrigation and water quality for vegetable and fruit growers in the Vega Baja region, as well as expansion plans for Orihuela´s Vega Baja Hospital.
TAPAS TIME by Alex Trelinski LOS MONTESINOS stages its tenth Ruta de la Tapa this weekend between Friday April 19th and Sunday April 21st. Snacks and drinks will be served up at 20 locations around the town for either two euros, or two euros fifty. As in previous years, people can vote for their favourite snack, with the chance for a free meal for two at the winning outlet.
I watched the latest Open Letter from British ambassador Simon Manley on the Brits in Spain Facebook page, and I honestly wondered why he bothered, as there was nothing really new that he could say(EDITOR:-report on page 16). He just seems to spout the government line, which is so irritating. Mary O´Connor, Denia. EDITOR:- Simon Manley is a civil servant and his job is to reflect the position of the UK government bosses, or otherwise he´d be back in Britain within a few hours! Ironically, Manley finishes his tenure in the summer to be replaced by a former government Brexit department PR guy.
The Easter school holidays back home have brought out families for a break over here, with some of the behaviour leaving a lot to be desired....and I´m not talking about the children. A bar I go to had a few of them in over the weekend, and approaching midnight, some of the kids(barely aged five or six) who should have been in bed many hours earlier, were just running around inbetween some inebriated customers.. That´s not the children´s fault, but I squarely point the finger at their drunken parents who I wondered whether they were even capable of getting back to where they were staying. Am I missing something, or is old age hitting me badly? Marion Allott, Benidorm.

4 steps for a healthier you
When focusing on personal transformation, many hit the gym or focus on eating right and losing weight. Instead of taking on large, difficult-to-maintain goals, there are smaller, simpler steps and habits that can be embraced, resulting in lasting change and a healthier you.
1. Self-care isn’t selfish When too many obligations and plans with family and friends become a burden, it’s OK to take a pass. If needed, spending a night at home or retreating to the comfort of your bed can help keep unintended stress at bay. Everyone needs a break from their social life on occasion.
2. Bring on the breakfast Busy mornings might leave you feeling short on time and skipping out on breakfast altogether. Though it might feel like a huge time saver, skipping breakfast is detrimental to your day. Quick
breakfast options that you can pre- peat. pare ahead of time, like veggie egg Remaining sedentary all day muffins or overnight oats, provide can lead to several physical effects energy and nutrients, like fiber, and pains. To help steer clear of that you need to keep you and your these, set a timer and get up for a body moving all day long.
five-minute lap around the office or house every hour or so. Not only will you minimize potential aches but moving throughout the day can also make you more productive.
With these tips in mind you can be more on top of your health without making any drastic changes. For more information, visit www.preparationh.com.
3. Treat the small stuff If you feel that something is off with your body, no matter how small it may seem, acting from the start can go a long way in preventing bigger issues. Treating minor health conditions can be just as important for overall health as visiting the doctor for more serious concerns, like the flu or chronic pain. Quick relief for bum discomfort, such as itching and burning, is achievable with Preparation H Totables Irritation Relief Wipes. They deliver relief and on-the-go cleansing in a discreet, convenient travel pack - so you can easily treat symptoms and get back to your day in comfort no matter where you are.
4. Work, walk, work. Re-
Hepatitis C (The Silent Epidemic) Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus which affects the liver. It can cause inflammation, scarring and even cirrhosis of the liver. Liver cirrhosis can increase the risk of developing liver cancer and liver failure. The incubation period can be from 2 weeks to 6 months. The problem with having Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is that you will not necessarily know you have it. The symptoms can be vague and often common to all of us. Symptoms include tiredness, insomnia, depression, skin problems, abdominal pain and digestive problems. Approximately 20%-30% of people who have contracted HCV will have
symptoms. We know 20% of people with HCV will fight the virus and clear it within the first 6 months of contracting it. Unfortunately for the remaining 80%, it will become a chronic condition. Chronic HCV infection is often asymptomatic and the virus may be present for years. Unfortunately, these people will have liver damage ranging from mild to severe. HCV is a tough resilient virus that can survive outside the body in very small droplets of blood. If in room temperature it can remain infectious from 16 hours to 4 days on surfaces. In a confined container like a syringe, it can survive up to 4 weeks.
Blood has the highest concentration of the virus thus a small trace of blood may have enough viruses in it to cause infection. Sharing intravenous drug equipment is especially high-risk behaviour. Before we all think it is only drug addicts at risk, we need to understand other areas of risk where it can be contracted.
Less common ways to have contracted HCV • Infected mother to baby before or during birth • Unprotected sexual intercourse with someone who has HCV (low risk) • Medical and dental treatment in highrisk countries where unsterile equipment may be used • Tattoo, piercings, acupuncture, electrolysis and semi-permanent make up where unsterile equipment may be used • Sharing razors, toothbrushes that may have been contaminated with blood from an HCV positive person
Who should get tested? • People who have injected illegal drugs
even if only on one occasion years ago • People who have received blood transfusions or blood products in the UK before July 1991 • People who received blood products in the UK before 1986 • People with HIV • Healthcare workers after needle stick injuries with known HCV positive blood • Patients with symptoms of liver disease e.g. abnormal liver enzyme tests • Children born to HCV positive mums The test for HCV is a blood test. Early, prompt diagnosis improves prognosis. HCV is treatable. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to protect us against it (unlike Hepatitis B). Treatment can take from 6 months to a year. Different medications are used, some injectable and some orally. The medication encourages an immune response to fight the virus. An antiviral will also be used to stop the virus replicating. There are side effects, some people being affected and some not. Lifestyle changes have to be made and alcohol intake at least reduced, preferably stopped completely.

You know, when you switch on Netflix, planning to watch something specific, but your eyes fall on the,‘Trending Now‘ bit at the bottom. Well that happened to me twice last week and I ended up sitting on the sofa well into the wee small hours binge watching both of the series from start to finish. The first is called, ‘Special’, written and starring memoirist Ryan O’Connell as a young gay man living with cerebral palsy, the show sees his character attempting to take the reins of his life, and dealing with the way he’s viewed by those around him.

Now that might not sound much like a ‘must watch’, but I urge you to give it a go as it’s moving, hilarious, touching, naughty and even better, you can binge the whole thing in a couple of hours. At the extreme opposite is Black Summer, which takes Zombie series to such a new level, that you actually feel like you are in the middle of the flesh eating chaos. Again, I binge watched the lot, alternatively screaming and pulling the cushion in front of my face …… It’s like The Walking Dead on streroids. Watch it!

e g r a l t i g n i v i L ’s t o D For the ‘Snooze’ Ellie Goulding appears on the album
Having already admitted to being one of the few people alive that Game of Thrones has passed by, I’ve been greatly amused by the furore that last weekend’s opening episode of the 8th and final season generated across social media. From friends issuing spoiler alerts, threatening to unfriend anyone giving the plotlines away before they got a chance to watch it, to actor Kit Harrington, following mixed reviews from fans, telling critics they can, “go f**k themselves”, the media circus has been relentless. For us non GOT fans, justas we feel it may be safe to venture back onto social media, news
emerges that an album of ‘thrones’ inspired music is about to be released …..What? Featuring appearances by A$AP Rocky, Ellie Goulding, Joey Bada$$, Lil Peep, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, SZA, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, The National, and Ty Dollars $ign, the album, entitled ‘For the Throne’, is apparently out next week. With lyrics like, ‘I saw the footprints in the white of the snow. I counted thousands of hours just to ride all along. 18 degrees and 80 miles from home, oh no!’, I think we know where this album is going and even the thought of it is sending me straight to sleep …….Zzzzzzzz!

Madge and Beyare back
Music fans have been in a right old tizzy this week, with news that one iconic Grand Dame of the pop scene, is set to launch the first single off her forthcoming album, whilst the other is rumoured to be about to enter the recording studio to lay down some new material. Let’s start with Madonna, fresh from confirming a million dollar appearance at next month’s Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv, where she will sing 2 numbers during the voting section. She will perform one of her mega hits and the first single from her new album Madame X, on which the sixty plus chanteuse adopts yet another new alter ego. A generation apart, but no less successful and eccentric, Beyonce, last week premiered her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, chronicling her
acclaimed performance at last year’s Coachella Festival in the States, where she became the first black musician to headline the event. Just hours before the documentary appeared on Netflix, rumours of a new album release from the singer began circulating, after the lyric website, Genius listed a new album, titled B7, under Beyoncé’s discography. Initially, there were rumours that a live-album from her Coachella performance would be released, although this remains unconfirmed, but rumours now point to an entirely new release of studio recorded music, but this too, remains just speculation as no official announcement has been made. All very intriguing ….. these divas know just how to keep us on our tiptoes don’t they.

NEW SERIES:
Adventurer and naturalist Steve Backshall is on a mission to visit parts of the world yet to be explored. On this expedition, he is in the Arctic to kayak up the largest fjord in the world. It is a dangerous undertaking, only made possible because the sea ice has broken up early here following the warmest winter on record. It is a chance for Steve and his team of explorers to see what impact global warming could be having on this pristine wilderness. They face many threats, from perilous sea ice that could crush their boats to a terrifying encounter with a hungry polar bear.

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Millions of people love their pets and spend lots of money to keep them happy and healthy. But being a pet owner also has a lot of benefits for the human half of the relationship. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, there are the physical boosts, like lower blood pressure, lower heart rate and lower cholesterol. Being with your pet also reduces your response to stress and helps you to recover from it faster. Having a pet benefits kids in many ways, including helping them develop empathy. A pet can give you the same emotional connection as a human friend. And studies show that the more people benefit from their pets, they closer they tend to be to other people. Dog owners of all ages are more likely to be physically active and less likely to be obese. For older people, having a dog can keep them socially connected. And that’s been shown to help people live longer, and avoid physical and mental decline. Some dogs have special training to safeguard your health,
Fido or Fluffy Can Bring You a Big Health Boost like warning you before a seizure. So how do you choose the right dog for your family? Start by thinking about your living space, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests. Do you live in a house or a small apartment? Do you have a yard or live close to a dog park? Next, think about your lifestyle. If you spend a lot of time indoors, you might want a dog that also enjoys being inside with people, like a Pug. If you’re looking for an exercise companion or your family loves outdoor activities, a dog that loves being outside, like a Retriever, may be a good choice. Think also about who’ll be caring for your dog. Is that person up for long walks every day or will your dog be getting most of its exercise in your backyard? If you’ve got kids, make sure any dog you’re considering loves having kids touch and play with him or her. Also talk about kids’ role in caring for the new family member. Having a pet is a great way to instill a sense of responsibility.

La Marina Golf Society @ Font del Llop A cool and unusually windless day greeted us on our return to Font del Llop with probably a record number of members picking up awards. The Twos Pot was shared amongst no less than 6 different players, namely Alan Swanson,Noel Danaher,Bill Stobo, Alistair Quin,Lindsay Merchant and Mark Pope. Nearest the Pin prizes went to Sarah McCabe,Gar-
ry Garbett, Bill Stobo and Mark Pope. The Silver group award went to one of the few members who ,being over the age of 70, has opted to play off the Ladies tees. The winner was Roger Honey with 39 points and he will happily be accepting a handicap cut for his success. Winner of the Gold award was Captain Bill Stobo with a monumental 41 points and ,of course , he will also be
pleased to be similarly cut. Three matches were played in the Knockout Trophy with wins for Elspeth Craig , Mick Cook and Bill Stobo. Our next game is at Alenda on 2nd May 10.00 first tee when we shall be playing a Texas Scramble for the Optica Optima Trophy. It’s Going Down To The Wire CD Montesinos along with a loyal band of 50 plus supporters made the journey along the CV91 in search of the points that should, perhaps, guarantee their tenure in the division. In a forgettable first half, it was Rafal who held the upper hand for most of the 45 with Carlos saving yet another one to one early on. Surely a strong contender for player of the year? Another challenger for that award should be Carlos Lorente, who, on 12 minutes, almost broke the deadlock only for his shot to hit the side netting. The half ended with Alex poking a half shot against the base of the post. Overall, a largely forgettable half of what can only be loosely described as football, with both teams looking not to lose rather than make an effort to win.

“I was very lucky to be given another chance to do something that I love to do. I had serious doubts after what transpired a couple of years ago. “I couldn’t lay down, I couldn’t do much of anything. I had the procedure which gave me a chance of having a normal life. “All of a sudden I realised

It’s got to be right up there, with all the things I’ve battled through.”
MILLER DRUGS HITCH

Anthony Joshua’s next opponent Jarrell Miller has returned an “adverse finding” in a drug-testing sample, says Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. American Miller is due to fight the Brit at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 1st, with Joshua defending his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles against the undefeated Miller, who has never fought for a world title. Hearn said Joshua’s “preparations continue” for his US debut and said he had been informed by the the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) about the finding from a sample collected last month. Joshua’s manager Freddie Cunningham said they “will 100% be looking at replacement options” if Miller is not

Villajoyosa CF gave themselves a big boost to book a play-off place in Preferente Group Four, as a 57th minute Botella goal gave them a one-nil win over leaders CF Intercity. It was Intercity´s third one-nil defeat in four outings, but they remain five points clear at the top, ahead of Hercules B who drew one-all away to play-off contenders CD Almoradi. Villajoyosa remain third, but a point clear of CFI Alicante, who thrashed Alicante University six-one. At the other end of the table, CD Benidorm still remain just above the drop zone after a disappointing three-two defeat at bottom side Villena
CF, who recorded only their fifth win of the season. CD Torrevieja remain second-bottom, three points behind Benidorm, after drawing four-four with Callosa, whilst Aspe UD continue to occupy the third relegation slot, after a four-nil drubbing away to UD Horadada. This weekend´s matches include CF Intercity at home to Redovan, Hercules entertaining UD Horadada, and Villajoyosa away to struggling Aspe, with CD Almoradi on the road to Elda Industrial. At the bottom, Benidorm CD go to Orihuela B, and there´s a Saturday trip for Torrevieja to Alicante University.
THOUSAND UP LEWIS by Alex Trelinski
Lewis Hamilton took a comfortable victory in Sunday´s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai to hold the championship lead for the first time in 2019. It was Hamilton’s 75th career victory, and the Mercedes driver passed team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who started from pole position, off the line and controlled Formula 1’s 1,000th race from there. Hamilton said: “What a fantastic result for the team. It has been so close between us all and I really have no idea how the next race is going to turn out.” Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took third, after the team ordered teammate Charles Leclerc to
let him by in the opening laps. The decision led to Leclerc losing fourth place to Max Verstappen’s Red Bull. Formula One bosses are so impressed with the Shanghai event that it is looking to establish a second race in China to grow the sport in one of its most important markets. Sean Bratches, the sport’s commercial boss, said he favoured a street race and was meeting delegates from six potential host cities this week, with Beijing said to be the favourite. This season´s next race is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on Sunday April 28th.

ALEX RINS SUPREME
There was no shock in Texas last Sunday when there was Spanish success in the latest MotoGP contest, namely the Grand Prix of the Americas. The rabbit out of the hat though was the name of Alex Rins from Lleida in Catalunya claiming a surprise maiden MotoGP victory, as fellow-countryman and hot favourite, Marc Marquez

crashed out when he was in control of the race. Marquez, aiming for his seventh win in a row in Austin, was leading by almost four seconds when he lost control of his Honda on the ninth lap. The Spaniard was unable to continue and Rins edged out Valentino Rossi to win by 0.462 seconds.
Overall championship leader Andrea Dovizioso finished fourth. Italy’s Rossi is second in the standings, three points behind leader Dovizioso, and Rins is third with 49 points. “I beat Valentino, this is unbelievable for me. He was my idol when I was very young,” Rins, 23, said. The next race is the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday May 5th at Jerez.
Billy Vunipola has been given a “formal warning” by the Rugby Football Union after the England player defended Australian player, Israel Folau’s social media post claiming “hell awaits” gay people. The 26-year-old number eight liked the bigoted post by Folau and called
by Alex Trelinski
for people to “live their lives how God intended”, and was booed by some supporters when he came on for Saracens during their defeat last weekend at Bristol. Vunipola, who has also been warned by his club Saracens, has been “reminded
of his responsibilities” by the RFU. During a meeting, the RFU said Vunipola had “expressed genuine regret”. “The warning will be retained on his disciplinary record for a period of five years and may be taken into account in future disciplinary proceedings,” the RFU said in a state-
ment. Vunipola said he had not intended to “cause suffering”, and that his intention was to “express my belief in the word of God.” Rugby Australia took swift action against Israel Folau by terminating his contract for a “high-level” breach of contact.
SEMI-FINAL SHOWDOWNS

sides left in the competition boast a combined total of 12 European Cups, with Leinster clinching their fourth crown last year after a 15-12 victory over this season’s beaten quarter-finalists, Racing 92, in
Bilbao. This year Saracens will be bidding to reach their third Champions Cup final in four seasons when they take on fellow twotime winners Munster – making a record 14th European semi-final appearance – this Saturday
at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. The following day, two Pool One rivals meet for the third time this season when defending champions Leinster host fellow fourtime winners Toulouse at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

BIG PREMIER EASTER The Premier League fixture list has thrown up some two big clashes this weekend affecting the top and bottom, and none more dramatic than Sunday´s match in South Wales as Cardiff City welcome leaders Liverpool, or an instant Champions League reunion at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham. With four matches remaining, Cardiff are still alive in their battle against relegation, thanks to a Tuesday night win at Brighton, who appear to
by Alex Trelinski
be falling apart, and go to Wolves on Saturday.. Neil Warnock´s side though have it all to do as they are still two points behind the Seagulls, with four matches remaining, plus they´ve played an extra game, which continues to be the same scenario for Klopp´s Liverpool in their top-of-thetable scrap with Manchester City.. It´s tough stuff for City, with the quick Spurs rematch this Saturday lunchtime, and
then that match in hand over Liverpool, which just happens to be a visit next Wednesday night to Old Trafford! Two wins for City would put them back in the driving seat, whilst there´s a battle royal for a Champions League slot, with just a point separating the London trio of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, with Barcelonabeaten Manchester United, two points off the pace, and needing a Sunday win at Everton, who themselves are smarting from a shock defeat at relegated Fulham.
INTERCITY HIT SEVEN
Preferente Group Four takes an Easter break this weekend, with just four fixtures remaining and the position becoming clearer at both the top and bottom after the latest set of matches. Just four teams are realistically fighting it out for the top three play-off positions, with leaders CFI Intercity pretty much there despite some recent indifferent form, though they thrashed Redovan seven-one last weekend(Intercity pictured post-match), with Hucha bagging yet another hat-trick. Three sides are then separated by two points, with second-placed Hercules B held one-all at home by UD Horadada; third-placed Villajoyosa CF getting a five-two win at struggling Aspe; and fourth-in-the-table CFI Alicante demolishing bottom side Villena, five-nil. CD Almoradi´s hopes of getting into the playoff pack appeared to suffer a terminal blow, when they lost two-nil at home to Elda Industrial. At the bottom, with Villena and Aspe losing, CD Torrevieja remain sandwiched between them after going down three-nil at Alicante University, whilst Benidorm CD gave themselves a four point
