ROCK BOTTOM GOLDCAR
SPANISH car rental company Goldcar has come bottom of the rankings for the fifth year on the trot in an annual British survey of car hire outlets. Goldcar has over 40 offices in Spain, including at AlicanteElche, Murcia Corvera, and Valencia airports, as well as in Benidorm, Denia, and

Torrevieja. Unexpected charges, unhelpful or even rude staff, and pressure selling were some of the reasons that Goldcar finished last once again in Which’s annual car hire report. Forty per cent of customers told Which that they definitely

would never consider using Goldcar again, as they experienced problems when hiring from the company, mostly complaining of poor customer service and unjustified credit card charges. Goldcar was actually bought out by Europcar in 2017, but its overall score in the survey has continued to get worse, with Europcar finishing secondbottom. Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor said: “The response over Goldcar is staggering. I don´t think we´ve seen anything like those results before in any survey of any company”. Topping the survey for the best car hire is Canary Island company that got a 97 per cent rating, as opposed to Goldcar scoring just 39 per cent. Of the larger car hire firms, Enterprise and sister firm Alamo are rated highly by car hire customers. Rory Boland said: “One wrong turn at airport arrivals could easily make or break your holiday. Our advice is don’t fall for headline prices and vet your car hire firm “ Which surveyed over two thousand people, whilst Goldcar offered no comment to the story run right across the UK media.
BLUE FLAG AWARDS
ALICANTE Province has once again got the biggest number of blue flag beaches and marinas of any Spanish province, with the 2019 list including three new flags locally. The provincial total stands at 84 flags(71 beaches and 13 marinas) and to get a blue flag, various factors are weighed up like the quality of bathing water; public information and environmental management. Only seven beaches in Spain received blue flags for the first time, with three of them in the region, including Playa L’Espigó in Altea, The newly awarded beach is the third beach of the town to fly the blue flag, along with Playa la Roda and Playa Cap Blanc. The beach was created less than three years ago, in a multi-million euro project, that

demolished a salt water lagoon on the northern side of the town. The other regional first time winners were Playa de Marines in Nules and Calas de Rocamar in Pilar de la Horadada, with two flags reinstated at Tabarca Island beach(for the first time since 1991) and at Playa Les Deveses in Denia. Albir retained its blue flag award again, one of only 6 municipalities to have kept the award every single year since the scheme was established more than 30 years ago A trio of beaches however lost the award, namely La Mata in Torrevieja; Playa de las Higuericas in Pilar de la Horadada; and Torrenostra in Torreblanca. Failure to comply with the law of Costas and urban waste water directives
have led to many beaches throughout Spain losing their Blue Flag status. In total, 24 less beaches than last year, achieved the required standards in the whole of the country. In total, 24 less beaches than last year, achieved the required standards in the whole of Spain, with deciding factors in
some cases being the failure to comply with coastal laws and urban waste water directives.
In terms of municipalities, Orihuela has 11 blue flags, only three behind the national leader, Sanxenxo in Galicia. The Murcia region obtained a total of 31 blue flags, the same figure as last year.

NO HIDING PLACE
A BRITISH rapist, who was traced to by one of his victims to a camper van in Torrevieja, has been jailed for 16 years. 66-year-old Jeffrey Waite of South Hilton, Sunderland, was found guilty of four rapes of an adult woman, and one rape of a teenager back in the eighties in Hartlepool. Two of his victims likened Waite to a “madman” and “animal”. Waite went on the run to Spain in 2016 after failing to turn up for an earlier rape trial in relation to the younger victim. The jury could not reach a verdict, which prompted the older victim to come forward. She used social media
by Alex Trelinski
to trace Waite to being somewhere in Spain, from where he was using a false online profile to contact
members of the family. The victim passed the information to the Cleveland Police, who tipped off Spanish authorities that he was in the country, with the
National Police starting a nine month investigation which tracked him down to Torrevieja, where he was arrested on March 8th last year.
Teenager tragedy after ravine tumble A 15 year old girl sustained serious injuries after falling down a 20 metre ravine while cycling in the Vall de Gallinera, inland of the Marina Alta. Emergency services were contacted at around lunchtime on
Tuesday’s May bank holiday and the young woman received urgent medical attention at the scene. She then had to be extricated by the fire brigade before being transferred for further treatment by helicopter.
She was kept under 24 hour surveillance at Alicante’s General Hospital but sadly died this Tuesday, a week after the accident. The young girl has been named as Clara Martinez Marquina, a triathlete who was practising
the sport with the local club she was a member of. World triathlon champion Javier Gomez Noya is among the many friends, family and athletes who have expressed their condolences on social media.

Ethical Investing - It is no longer just something for a few tree-hugging individuals. In a world that is becoming more and more focused about the environment and ways to protect it, it is no wonder that I am being asked more and more about ethical investments. Ethical investors were historically driven by their focus on doing what was best for the environment and communities and often this meant their investment could sometimes suffer. But times are changing and investing ethically can now be very rewarding. When a company owned by Warren Buffett (one of the world’s most successful investors) bought a stake in BYD, then a little-known Chinese car company, some
sceptics were ridiculing the 2008 deal. Car and Driver, an industry magazine, commented that it was “hard to take BYD seriously” because many of its cars seemed to be copies of older Japanese models, while their performance was lacklustre. “We drive faster in our driveways,” the magazine said. But Mr Buffettis now more than vindicated and the Chinese company’s focus on electric cars and climate-friendly motoring is delivering on the promise concealed in its acronym — Build Your Dreams. Its shares are trading at roughly 21 times forward earnings, or 2.5 times the ratio when Mr Buffett bought in. The deal stands as an example of how investing in
renewable technologies can pay off and since 2008, BYD has become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles. The BYD investment story is a small part of a much bigger trend. Investors are finding that if they are good to the planet and to people, they also end up, on average, benefiting themselves. There is mounting evidence that funds which observe environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards in their strategies tend to outperform those that don’t by a significant margin. Socially responsible investing (SRI) is another approach to investing ethically. SRI is based largely on excluding
certain companies from your portfolio, which you identify using a series of criteria related to, for example, environmental and social practices. Socially responsible investing continues to grow and expand as investors have taken a shine to building profits with a purpose. There’s no longer a trade-off between profits and the planet! At Chorus Financial we make sure that we understand the individual needs of all our clients, not just in terms of their financial goals but also what is important to them in terms of investing. Endangered bird lays eggs at Benidorm zoo Terra Natura staff were celebrating this week as the female of a pair of rare, storks laid two eggs, due to hatch within the next few weeks. The two birds, members of the CiconiaCiconia, White Stork breed, arrived separately at the nature park in 2005 and 2006, directly from the Centre for the Recovery of Threatened Species (CREA), in Caceras. Despite, several attempts in recent years, the pair have been unable to successfully hatch any offspring, leaving vets and keepers at the zoo, on the outskirts of Benidorm, anxious that on this occasion, the outcome will be positive. Many decades ago, the white stork was a migratory

species that spent the Summer months on the Iberian Peninsula, attracted by the heat and an abundance of food. During early Autumn, they would set off ona route of about 3,000 kilometres, which took them to Sub-Saharan Africa for the Winter. However, climate change has caused them to become sedentary, even though this species is capable of covering great distances thanks to the ascending thermal currents. Unfortunately, in recent years, their journey had confronted them with a series of ‘Death Traps’, in
the form of overhead electric and telecommunications cables and wind turbines, which has decimated the breed, leaving them on the endangered species list. The most pleasing aspect of the breeding programme for zoo staff, is the fact that the socializing process of courtship, pairing and breeding shows that the storks have adapted to their new environment.

Since 2006, the UK government has capped how much you can hold in combined pension benefits without paying extra tax. From April 2019 the limit is £1.055 million. All UK pension benefits outside the State Pension are counted. After decades of pension contributions, compounding interest, investment growth and tax relief, the limit may be closer than you think. Once total pension funds exceed the allowance limit, extra tax is payable whenever you access your money – technically called a ‘benefit crystallisation event’. The rates are 55% for lump sums and 25% for income or transfers to overseas pensions. Calculating how much of your allowance you have used is not always straightforward, especially for final salary pensions. Check
your position with your provider or pension adviser. Protecting your funds You could secure a higher limit by applying for LTA ‘protection’ from HMRC, but this usually has strict conditions attached. Expatriates have the option of transferring pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), which can also provide tax-efficiency, currency flexibility and estate planning advantages. If you t r a n s f e r pensions into a QROPS and your total benefits are under £1.055 million, you will not face LTA taxes on
the transfer. Once in a QROPS, funds are out of reach of LTA penalties. Another option is to take your UK pension as cash and reinvest into a tax-efficient Spanish-compliant arrangement. Before making any pension decisions, taking regulated, personalised advice is crucial to protect your retirement savings. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of
current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

the holder of Masters degree in teaching as well as a graduate in English studies, there is a bias in favour of teachers that know the area well, as well as being proficient in the Valenciano language. Mar described herself as a defender of the world´s languages and the right to use them, but said that the Valenciano evaluation examination was unfair, as
it barely concentrated on the language, but instead on extremely specific questions that people out of the area could not answer, like the schedule of the Valencian regional TV channel, A Punt. Mar posted:-” This test is nothing to do with the Valenciano language, but it is simply an attempt to get rid of people who don´t want to take part in the media circus set up in the region”.

WELCOME ABOARD:
The Weekender Newspaper gets a new man at the helm THE leading role of CEO at the Impact Media Group has the desire and sheer common sense to take the newspaper title of The Weekender to a much higher level. Alan Goldsborough-Pike as had years of experience in the industry here in Spain and through careers in media and public relations. Such a wide ranging wealth of experience should serve Alan (known as Big Al) well in his new role as hands-on CEO of the two editions of the Weekender Newspaper, his position overseeing the media group IMPACT with its fast growing media channels including its latest expansion with BIG RADIO SPAIN. Alan, who has previously worked for a competitor brand newspaper as regional sales manager and he has
been in Spain for fifteen-years now and says he plans to approach the job with diligence, openness and with a team mindset. “I want to ensure we deliver the best and latest news in a reader friendly newspaper and expand our editions further across the coast of Spain, for our reader’spleasure and enjoyment” he said. “I’m conscious that things have been hard for The Weekender Newspaper since it was formed in 2017 and there have been many hurdles thrown in its path. I applaud the team’s efforts and take my hat off to the management who have been hard working and conscientious not to be beaten, I can’t wait to take this extremely popular title it to greater heights,” he said. “The title has gone from strength to strength under my predecessor despite the negativity and personal attacks made by other newspaper titles and it’s now time to allow a new leader to take the bull by its horns and let’s see how far we can take it going forward,” he said. Alan’s time to prep for my new role has been literally a few days and but the staff of the company already have said that they can see a BIG difference in the response to
this exciting change and as the news travels fast across the region “Alan is back” and those that know him say he is a happy go lucky person who would like to help any business succeed with its marketing and advertising, a popular a friendly face with a wide skill set but also known for being straight, down to earth and normal. “I’d like to take this opportunity to ask all readers of the Weekender to get in touch with us and letting us know about the issues that are affecting them in their local areas,” he said. Although he also worked in the North Costa Blanca during 2015/16 he is looking forward to getting to know other areas popular with expatriates. “I’ve spent time in our other areas but not as much as I would like. I feel our readers want to have the opportunity to learn about what’s going on where their fellow expats are based.” “I would like to thank the team in the office for welcoming me on board and I look forward to rolling out the best newspaper to our readers. I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s feedback” he said.

Euthanasia debate splits the country
VINCENT Lambert was badly injured in a traffic accident in his native France 11 years ago while on the way to his work as a male nurse. He is now in a vegetative state in a Paris hospital bed, something doctors say he will never recover from. In a case that could have implication across Europe, his wife has appealed to the EU Human Rights Court to allow him to die by removing the food and hydration that is all that is keeping him alive. However his staunchly Catholic parents believe he should be allowed to stay alive whatever his condition and what happens will be “Gods will. Any final ruling in the court could have implications across the EU, sparking once again the fierce euthanasia debate in countries like Spain. The crux of the matter is living wills. If, as his wife believes, Vincent would never have wanted to stay alive in his current state and he had clearly documented the fact, then the
by Simon Russell
health care professionals would have abided by his wishes. Research has shown that in Spain just 300,000 people have living wills, most of them elderly people or those facing a future with a chronically degenerative disease. This amounts to just 0.6% of the population despite the fact that a recent survey has shown that 87% support euthanasia in certain circumstances. This has led to controversy with recent cases such as that of Angel Hernandez who helped his terminally ill wife to die in agreement with her verbal but unwritten wishes. He was initially charged with crimes of death by gender violence which were dropped but the case against him remains open. Supporters of the right to die with dignity have said that anyone should spend time to make a document expressing their wishes should they find themselves unable to do so.

Runway Concern ELCHE council has launched an objection to current plans for a second runway at Alicante-Elche airport. The authority says that the proposals would have a major negative effect on the environment in regard to the protected status of the Aqua Amargo salt marsh, as well as the future urban expansion of the
Torrellano area. The Ministry of Development is currently undertaking an environmental impact study over the proposed three thousand metre runway, which would be built in parallel to the current runway, as the airport looks to cope with extra air traffic over the next decade.

Collapsing camel raises concerns ONCE again questions will be asked about animal welfare at local fiestas after a camel collapsed to the ground at a Moors and Christians parade in

Sedavi, a small town just south of Valencia City. The beast was being ridden by the head of one of the filas
when it suddenly crumpled to the ground with the man still on his back. The camel was removed from the parade and an organiser said that the animal was clearly unwell. It had been hired for the event from a specialist company and they have been asked to explain the animal’s condition pending a vet’s report. Many municipalities now prohibit the use of animals at fiestas. Sedavi is not one of them with the local guidelines stating that “occasional exposure of non-endangered animals is permitted but safety, hygiene and the comfort of animals must all be of an adequate level”.

World News Selfish passengers blamed for 41 deaths after horror crash THE aviation industry is going through a difficult period, as one of Boeing’s line of aircraft remains grounded following two separate crashes that killed hundreds earlier this year. The latest fatal crash does not, thankfully for Boeing, involve one of their planes, but the circumstances will not help any nervous flyers out there. An Aeroflot SSJ100 burst into flames on a Moscow runway last Sunday when it made a “hard landing” after being forced to return shortly after take off due to a communications fault. No passengers were believed to have been killed or injured in the impact, but the fire in the rear of the craft required an emergency evacuation. There are several reports that rather than leaving the plane immediately a number of passengers stopped to retrieve their bags from overhead lockers. One “obese gentleman” was singled out, blocking the aisle while retrieving his bags. Although he survived

many of those behind him, including two children, were engulfed in the smoke and flames, perishing on the plane. Footage taken from the runway clearly shows the first people to leave throwing their luggage down the sole escape chute, with delays retrieving bags almost certainly costing lives. Meanwhile the cause of the crash remains a mystery, much like the recent Boeing disasters. The pilots part in the matter has been raised, as it is usual procedure to dump fuel if aborting a flight in this fashion so that the landing is not too heavy, something which wasn’t done here. Electrical failures and lightning strikes are also being speculated about. Meanwhile Aeroflot’s safety record has also once again come into the spotlight. 8,231 passengers have now died with the Russian carrier, five times more than any other airline.
DNA advancement solves 47 year old murder
1972 was the year that eleven Israeli athletes were killed in a terror attack at the Munich Olympics, that the Watergate scandal which would eventually bring down President Nixon first came to light, and when the average price of a house in the UK was £7,374. It was also the year that college student Pamela Milam was murdered in Terre Haute (Indiana) a crime that was unresolved until this week, almost 47 years after

the event. 19 year old Ms Milam disappeared on the night of 15 September 1972 after leaving a party at the Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Her bound and gagged body was found in the boot of her own car 24 hours later. There were no witnesses or physical evidence, at least nothing that forensics at that time could do anything with. As there was no hard evidence the
police turned to profiling and a sex offender, Robert Austin, was strongly linked to the crime. However despite the suspicion around him the lack of physical evidence means he was never charged. DNA played its first significant appearance in the case in 2008 when new technology was able to clear Austin using evidence retained from the crime scene. However the case remained very much a cold one until the announcement this week that DNA testing proved within a 99.9% probability that Pamela’s killer was a man called Jeffrey Hand. He had been arrested for murdering a hitch-hiker in 1973 but released three years later as he had been judged to be insane at the time. DNA from the scene and surviving members of Hand’s family proved that Pamela had been another victim of his killing spree and the case is now closed. However the killler will not be facing trial, as he was shot dead by police in 1978 during an attempted kidnapping. Ms Milam’s sister said “We are happy to know he hasn’t been out there living a great life for the last 47 years” as she finally closed a sad chapter in her own life.
An almost complete skeleton of the “new” T-rex. Note the lack of arms.
SCIENTISTS have confirmed the discovery of a new species of dinosaur, a close cousin of the infamous Tyrannosaurus rex. However unlike the huge “Jurassic Park” stars the newly named Suskittyrannus hazelae, which means “coyote tyrant”, is only about three feet tall (less than a metre) and would have
weighed about 90 pounds (40kgs). In contrast its larger relative would have been about 40 feet tall and weighed in at a hefty nine tonnes. The mini monster would have been around a few million years before the T-rex and may have been close to the top of its own food chain, although what exactly
it would have fed on is not clear. However the Suskittyrannus may well itself have made a tasty snack for the top predator of that era, the fearsome Allosaurus. The new species is the earliest to be confirmed as a relative of the T-rex and would have walked the Earth about 90 million years ago, give or take a month or two.

Lake District by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Set in the footholds of the Alps, Italy´s Lake District is the perfect place to visit for a stunning scenic holiday, beautiful waters and still escaping from the sweltering heat of the Mediteranean Coastal towns.
Each Lake has its own following, with the Americans showing a preference for Lake Como, whilst the Italians opt for Lake Orta. Lake Maggiore is the largest, and Lake Como, the deepest and also the most famous as home to
the rich and famous, (such as lakeside homeowner George Clooney), so make sure you keep your camera handy!
Italy
From the city of Como, you can take a funicular train ride into the mountains, visiting the town of Brunate, nestled high in the mountain and offering fabulous views of the lakes from terraces just perfect for sipping a cool glass of wine.
The lake is studded with little towns and eateries, making a full circuit of the lake stunning on the eye, and hard on the waist! Take a ferry from the town of Bellagio and explore the lake´s other
towns, or head to the beaches of San Giancarlo (stony beach) or Lido de Bellagio, a more upbeat mix of beach and cocktail bars. If you prefer to explore Bellagio itself, make sure you wear great walking shoes! The centre of the town is a mix of restaurants and shops offering traditional leather goods as well as tourist gifts. You can also take a tour of the nearby gardens in the Villa Serbelloni, a 15th century luxury hotel now owened by the Rockerfeller Foundation. Guests of the hotel can obviously tour the interior, but the gardens are open to non guests via a prior booking system. Nearby is Lake Maggiore, the largest at 65 km in length. Stretching from the North of Milan into nearby Switzerland. The main town on this lake is Stresa, from where you can take a ferry to reach the three islands on the lake. This town
also offers many water sports, and for the more adventurous, a cable car into the mountains to see the heights from 360 views. Close by is the lesser known Lake Orta. Haven for the Milanese at the weekends, the rest of the time this lake is mostly deserted and therefore perfect for those looking to escape and discover hidden gems without the crowds. Accommodation around this lake comes in all forms, from luxury high end to apart hotels offering a self catering more budget friendly accomodation.
Located a half hour north of Milan, and with flights direct from Alicante, you can either take a train or hire a car to explore this region. Car hire probably offers the best way to travel around, but public transport will take you to the larger lakeside towns.
KING OF THE CASTLE
If you´ve been inspired by the dramatic action in the final series of Game of Thrones, then you might fancy a Spanish palace or castle as your next property purchase! Spain of course is a country with a long and rich medieval history, having been influenced by Arab, Visigoth and Celtic civilisations. Several original locations have even been

used in Game of Thrones for their authentic atmosphere of luxury and tradition. While buying a castle may not be within most people’s grasp, if you do have some money to burn, then there is even one to go at in Alicante Province for a cool two point six million euros! This castle is off the CV-
782 at Torremanzanas. and though it looks old, most of it was actually built just over a century ago as a reconstruction project, with oak beams brought in from France for the roofing. All the walls have been built with natural stone, and there are five bedrooms to go at, so if you want to live like a king or queen, it is there for you!

This means that the Court takes this type of lease to be a type of construction of the taxpayer’s permanent residence, i.e. the payment of money to the developer. It considers it as the purchase of a main residence is being in both cases, so that the taxpayer, can benefit from the deduction for the purchase. So, essentially if you are filling in a Spanish tax form, you need to make sure that you get the full benefit of the ruling. The Supreme Court states that the renter’s intention to eventually buy the house must be clear, since only then is it possible to consider that when each monthly rental

In the case that led to the Court ruling, the taxpayer in question had signed a contract with a cooperative, by which he assumed the commitment to exercise the right to purchase after 10 years of renting the house. During this period, each “partner” in the cooperative was jointly responsible for the part of the mortgage corresponding to the property finally transferred. The payment of this mortgage was made through the rent. For its part, the cooperative was contractually obliged not to transfer the property to any person other than the co-operator, provided that the latter complied with the payment of the rent.

Motoring Make no mistake, the new Subaru XV is a very capable car, but that’s going to be its biggest weakness – it’s totally overqualified. While the interior, ride and handling have improved, it’s not pretty (or cheap) enough to threaten rivals such as the Nissan Juke. Its full-time four-wheel drive system means that, while you’ve always got plenty of grip, fuel economy and emissions are below par. Worse, buyers have zero choice – if you want an XV, it’ll be a petrol and it’ll be an automatic. While most tests normally launch into how the car rides and handles at this point, we reckon there’s something more important to cover first - what it‘s actually like to live with a Subaru. If you live in a remote part of the world where it’s hilly, muddy, and prone to difficult d r i v i n g conditions, then the new Subaru XV with its full-time fourwheel drive and clever X-mode system should be on your shortlist – assuming you’ve got a dealer nearby (or you don’t already own one). Because if there’s one thing that’s going to hinder sales of the new model, it’s coverage. While the four Subaru dealers north of the border

Clone car thief arrested twice in 24 hours
GUARDIA Civil officers who arrested a man in Carcaixent (Valencia) believe he is one of a gang behind the recent spate of thefts from cars in the area. He was using a device that cloned the frequency of remote controls and could then be used to open vehicles while he also had a tool that allowed him to force doors without damaging them. CCTV footage showed that he was getting into cars

in a matter of seconds and the suspect is thought to be behind at least a dozen such incidents. The man was arrested at the weekend and had been one of three people arrested less than 24 hours earlier, when he had been detained and then released awaiting charges. After a number of reports of similar thefts in Carcaixent, Alzira and
Petrer, Guardia agents studied CCTV which led to the recent detention. They have also seized a briefcase containing over 200 remote controls from various vehicle brands and two devices to capture remote frequencies. It is estimated that around €20,000 worth of goods was stolen in the crime spree; the authorities have reminded people not to leave valuables in their car.

FOUR high-end cars stolen from around Spain have been found by the Orihuela police in a car park on the Orihuela Costa. The Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles all had false number plates on them with the Guardia Civil taking over the investigation.
The recent Easter holidays, besides the rain, brought the usual quota of heavy traffic between Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa on the N-332 which could be solved instantly by making the AP-7 toll-free between Los Montesinos and La Zenia. I fail to comprehend why the operator of this stretch of the AP-7 fails to slash charges which would surely boost income, as well as solving the traditional N-332 bottlenecks. Some people round here have got it into their minds that the AP-7 toll booths will disappear in the Vega Baja next year, but since there is a different franchise holder on our local stretch, they are in for a shock, as the changes happening in Alicante and further north will not apply down here. Once again, we are the forgotten and neglected portion of Alicante Province. Vincent Douglas, Torrevieja. How ancient ingredients can give your winter health a boost today
Whether it’s a hot drink of honey, lemon and brandy, or a steaming bowl of chicken soup, many families have age-old home remedies, passed down through the generations, that they still use today when winter kicks into high gear. Grandma knew a thing or two about soothing a sore throat, quieting a cough or settling a rumbling stomach without a
trip to the pharmacy. Many of those passeddown secrets originated in ancient times, and were implemented to boost the immune system to help fight off bugs before they took hold. While some of those age-old remedies are still in use today, there are some more modern ways to help support your health.
Today, people tout honey as a superfood and natural remedy for many ailments. Honey is rich in vitamins B and C, and minerals like calcium, iron, zinc and more. Manuka honey, out of New Zealand, is getting a lot of attention lately for its super beneficial qualities. A great way to get it into your diet is with the Swisse Vitamin C + Manuka Honey supplement. It’s a chewable antioxidant that makes it easy for you to give your body the benefits of this amazing honey without needing to keep little bear-shaped jars of the stuff 1. Honey. It was so Native American traditional revered that pots of honey medicine for hundreds of have even been found in years. Its use was passed on Egyptian tombs, unspoiled to pioneers and settlers, and after thousands of years. became part of their tradi“Today, many of us rely on the convenience of vitamins and supplements to help support our immune systems, which is a beautiful thing,” says Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, and consultant to Swisse Wellness. “It’s much easier than making batches of soup from scratch and finding endless obscure herbs and remedies. However, it’s important to find high-quality supplements that have these immune boosting ingredients that are trending today.”
tional remedies, too. It has historically been reported to support the immune system, and today, we know echinacea to do the same. You can find it in liquid form, or in supplements. Swisse Immune Forte combines echinacea with elderflower, vitamin C and zinc for a powerful combination of immune-supporting effects.
3. Andrographis. Another key ingredient in Swisse’s Immune Forte, andrographis is a plant native to South Asian countries often used to make medicine. Andrographis is rich in compounds called andrographolides (hence the name), which are said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
What Is Prediabetes? Prediabetes is a term used when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. You won’t necessarily notice any symptoms therefore you can have it and not know it. A simple blood test can tell you if you do. You’re more at risk if you’re overweight, over 45, and you don’t exercise. It makes you more likely to have type 2 diabetes and heart disease, but you can take steps to stop this from happening. Lose Weight It doesn’t have to be a lot. If you lose just 7% of your body
weight, it can make a huge difference (that’s only 14 pounds for a 200-pound person). The first step is to eat healthier food with fewer calories. Start by keeping track of your weight, eating habits, and physical activities. Eat Healthily A good rule of thumb is to fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables (asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and carrots, among many others). One quarter should have starchy foods (like potatoes, sweetcorn, or peas). The remaining quarter should be
protein -- chicken, fish, or beans are best. Be extra careful with foods containing carbohydrates like pies, pasta or desserts as they can raise your blood sugar. Exercise You’ll lose weight faster and feel better if you get out and burn more calories. You don’t need to train for a marathon: A brisk 30-minute walk five times a week should do the trick. A workout buddy can sometimes help you stick to a routine, so call a friend or join a gym and make some new ones. Aerobic exercise (walking, swimming, dancing) and strength training (weight lifting, push ups, pull-ups) are both good. A little of both is best. Sleep The right amount of sleep helps keep your blood sugar at healthy levels.
If you can’t stay asleep, wake up too early, or get less than 5 hours a night, you’re more likely to get diabetes. About 7 or 8 hours a night is ideal. For better sleep, don’t have alcohol or caffeine late in the day, keep regular sleep hours, and stick to a calm, quiet bedtime routine. Don’t Smoke If you smoke, now’s the time to quit. Smokers are 30% to 40% more likely to get type 2 diabetes than non smokers. And if you get diabetes and still smoke, your symptoms may be worse and your blood sugar may be harder to control. Medication Certain drugs can help with blood sugar levels and obesity, as well as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. And you’re more likely to have those if you have prediabetes. If you do, take your medication as prescribed --
it can improve your health and help you live longer. Get Support When you have people to share your good days and bad days with, it can make a big difference. Peer support groups can be a place to learn from others and get and give encouragement and understanding. Your doctor can help you find one that works for you. If you are concerned that your blood sugar could be high, The Family Medical centre in May have a blood glucose test on special offer. You could put your mind at rest for only18€ instead of the normal 23€. Call now to make an appointment on 966 865 072.

So, the theme of this year’s Met Gala Ball, which I admit, I previously knew nothing about, was CAMP. Now, not being averse to a bit of camp fun, I checked to see who had made an entrance in the campest outfit. Well, the prize undoubtedly went to the amazing Billy Porter, one of the stars of what has become my TV obsession over the last few weeks …… The fabulous POSE. Billy, 49, wearing gold lame trousers, boots and beaded face mask, was transported, reclined on top of a plinth, held aloft by a bevy of beautiful boys. Carried into the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art by six shirtless men in an homage to Diana Ross in 1975’s movie, Mahogany…… it was probably the best entrance of all time. God bless you Billy Porter.

Passing by the famous metal sign on the roundabout next to the bus station, welcoming visitors to the Costa Blanca’s favourite resort, I was surprised to see a car, neatly embedded into the large ‘R’ of B.E.N.I.D.O.R.M. Apart from wondering what the hell the driver was doing to miss seeing the massive metal letters, another thought did spring to my mind …….. “Hmmm ….Didn’t know Ant n’ Dec were in town!! “
Is Ant in town?

Thierry Butcher‘s Kim Not being particularly au fait with balls, I have no idea what the Met Ball is, but I do know it’s been filling the showbiz gossip pages this week. It appears to be all about the Kardashians this year, none more so than Our Kim, who took to the red carpet in a shrink wrapped dress by someone called Thierry Mugler, who apparently came out of retirement to create it. Not sure what Thierry’s previous profession was? Maybe he was a purveyor of processed meats, because I’m convinced he based his design on a shrink wrapped roll of chorizo. Take a look at the photo of Ms K’s ample behind and you’ll catch my drift …..polony springs to mind. The word is that, in Kim’s work as a trainee lawyer, she has freed 70 inmates from prisons in the States …… If the word was ‘feed’ I’d be more inclined to believe the story.
I hadn’t even realised Blind Date had resurfaced on British TV, minus Our Cilla, of course and now hosted by Lily ....oops, er, Paul O‘ Grady and relegated to the home of lost causes .... Channel 5. Last week, the show boasted about having their first bi-sexual date, where a
guy could choose between boy or girl dates. Well, the contestant chose another man and where did the production company send them on their first dream date together? …… Saint Lucia, the West Indian island, where same-sex sexual activity is illegal,
carrying a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. If it wasn’t so embarrassing you could laugh, particularly as the show is co produced by companies belonging to Lily ….. oops, er, O’ Grady and Graham Norton …. Get your act together Channel 5.
Feed the inmates, Kimbo Katie’s hair was matted with blood.
Adele Meme Queen
Break ups are never easy, never more so than when you are one of the biggest names in world music and you split up with the father of your kid and it comes as a major surprise to celebrity watchers. Well, if you’re the fabulous Adele, you take to Instagram, to reassure all of your devoted fans and show them you’re coping quite well. The singer announced her separation from husband and longtime love, Simon Konecki, back in April, but she can still find a bit of humour amidst the pain. She posted a meme about her recent situation on Instagram Wednesday, with two split pictures, one that shows the singer in tears and another that shows her with a smile on her face, from a snapshot of her appearance on “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden. “When you catch yourself in your feelings then remember who you are,” the meme said. That’s the way Adele rolls ……. In the deep!
Adele keeps her humour.

Does Your Pet Belong Indoors or Outdoors?
Domestic cats and dogs are the most popular pets in the United States, numbering more than 130 million. Some people believe that cats are natural outdoor pets and will be happier outside, but according to the Humane Society of the United States, cats will stay healthier as indoor pets. Since the 1940s, when kitty litter first became available, cats have gradually moved indoors. Cats left outside adapt quickly and will naturally start hunting smaller mammals. Because they are not as dependent on people as dogs are, they have a greater tendency to stray from their homes. In fact, 20 percent of cats that are adopted were strays. Here are some things to keep in mind about outdoor cats: Pet health. The average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about two years compared to more than 10 years for an indoor cat. Ticks, fleas, disease, traffic, and predators all pose danger to outdoor cats. Studies have found that about 13 percent of a coyote’s diet consists of cats. Environmental concerns. Domestic cats are not part of the natural environment. Even when
well fed, their instincts are to hunt. In addition to killing mice and chipmunks, outdoor cats kill millions of birds each year. Outdoor options. If you want to let your cat enjoy the outdoors, consider an outdoor pet enclosure or a harness. Cats can be trained to go for walks outside on a leash and harness. An outdoor enclosure should be one that keeps cats in and predators out, which means it must have a closed roof. Why Dogs Do Better Indoors Some pet owners believe that outdoor dogs get more exercise, are happier, and are good guard dogs. According to pet health experts, however, these arguments are simply not true. Dogs are social animals that crave attention; they are not happy alone outside. If a dog lives outside, the only territory he will guard is his pen. And instead of exercising, dogs that are left outside spend most of their time waiting for you. “In some parts of the country where the climate is milder, it is more common to have outdoor dogs, but dogs are social creatures and are never happy in isolation,” says Bill Gorton, a professional
dog trainer in Lehigh Valley, Pa. Here are some of the other hazards of keeping a dog as an outdoor pet: Pet health. Outdoor dogs can escape from the yard, facing danger in the form of traffic, poisoning, or fights with other animals. Chronic health problems can develop from cold or heat exposure. Because outdoor dogs are less socialized, they are more likely to be given to shelters. In addition, outdoor dogs are more likely to be put down. Behavior problems. Dogs that are outside pets are more stressed and develop behavior problems such as barking, digging, escaping, and being overly aggressive. This makes them harder to train and easier to give up. Outdoor options. Dogs need exercise. The best way to get them outside is to be outside with them, walking or playing. If you leave your dog outside for short periods, make sure

to provide a safe, escapeproof shelter, shade, and fresh water. Never chain your dog. Remember that dogs with heavy coats don’t do well in the heat, and short-coated dogs do not do well in the cold. Should You Change Your Pet’s Environment? It is possible to bring your outdoor pet indoors, but it may take some time to get him used to being in the house; making an indoor pet into an outdoor pet is almost always a bad idea. Cats will easily learn to use a litter box, and you can keep them happy by providing them with play toys and a scratching post, but letting an indoor cat outside exposes them to dangers, and cats may stray. Bad habits developed as an outdoor dog may be managed or modified with training. You may need the help of a professional dog trainer. “The worst thing you can do to a dog that is an indoor pet is

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson It’s been an “on-off” start to the Summer season during April with both league and Champion of Champions matches scheduled, postponed and then rescheduled due to the heavy rains during the Easter weekend. Huge congratulations go to Quesadas Terry Morgan who won the Champion of Champions Men Singles in a hard fought match against Martin Fulcher (Vistabella). In the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division, both Quesada Lancasters and Blenheims have had a bit of a slow start to the season. Lancasters played two matches this week, on Monday they faced Emerald Isle Victors and
enjoyed a victory of 8-4 points and 99-78 shots. But in contrast when they played Vistabella Fairways on Tuesday in the match that was rescheduled due to rain the previous week, they suffered a disappointing loss with the Fairways winning 12-0 points and 121-41 shots. The Blenheims had a very competitive and close match against San Luis Wellingtons, who won 9-3 points and 84-77 shots. Meanwhile in the VCL league Quesada Lions played Emerald Isle Dukes and enjoyed a win of 10-2 points and 97-53 shots. But Quesada Tigers had the opposite result playing Vistabella Saxons who won the match 10-2 points and 113-40 shots.
El Plantio 2 Golf Society
A late withdrawal forced a change of competition from a six x 2 member team game to a Yellow Ball competition with three teams of 3 members and oneof 2. The team with 3 members would discard one of their scores on every hole. Unfortunately, the 2 member team found the pressures of having their Stableford scores counting on every hole too much and finished well behind the teams of 3, who staged a very close finish with two points separating them. Nearest the pins – Hole 1 Alistair Douglas and Hole 4 David Swann . Second place – Ray Housley, Janice O’Brien, Ronnie Campbell – 102 points.
So quite mixed fortunes for the Quesada teams at the moment but its early days and there’s plenty of time to make up ground in the coming weeks. Anyone interested in joining Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk
First place – Ian Burroughs, Henry Mellor, David Swann - 103 points... Picture from L to R: Henry Mellor, Ian Burroughs, David Swann, Janice O’Brien, Ronny Campbell, Ray Housley, Alistair Douglas. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact David Swann on 865 779 983 or 648 476 752.

Club25Serena Golf Society - a society within a club
Club25Serena is a golf society based at La Serena Golf Course at Torre Pacheco for more than 10 years. Club25Serena is all about friendship through golf, offering competitive golf, combined with a warm and friendly atmosphere, playing on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, throughout the whole year . We play a Club Championship, Monthly Medals and Stablefords under the auspices of the Spanish Federation and more informal rounds of Texas Scramble and Fiddle, to mention but a few. Society members, all of whom are members of La Serena Golf Course, have a variety of handicaps ranging from single figures to 36. Away Days (3 or 4 each year) and golf weekends (2 each year) are always popular, introducing members to different golf courses around the Costa Calida and further afield. Our members try to play good golf but try harder to make good friends!! Captain for 2019-2020 is Alan Boggess who looks forward to maintaining the traditions of the Society which includes an annual donation to a local charity or cause. Last year, under the Captaincy of Ken Sharp, Club25Serena Society raised a total of €200 which
was donated to a local teenager, Millie Grundy, to support the medical and follow-up costs following a life-changing back operation to correct an extreme spine curvature. Captain Boggess recently presented the donation, on behalf of Club25Serena, to Millie’s mother who expressed her sincere thanks to all Society members.

FERRARÍ S GAMBLE Ferrari are introducing an upgraded engine two races early at this Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix, as they desperately seek to end Mercedes’ domination. Mercedes have taken one-twos in all four races so far this season with reliability problems and driver errors scuppering Ferrari’s chances. The new engine will use a new fuel, which also increases performance, and the car will have aerodynamic upgrades. Team boss Mattia Binotto said Ferrari were “pushing hard to make up ground”. The Spanish Grand Prix is held on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where Ferrari’s form in pre-season testing led Mercedes to wrongly conclude they were going into the season behind their rivals.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said there would be “no complacency” in Spain despite the unprecedented winning start to the season. “We know that it’s not truly representative of the balance of power this season so far,” he said. Just one point separates Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ championship, but one thing Mercedes won’t want is a repeat of the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix fiasco when Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided with each other to end their races on the first lap. As previously reported, this Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix could be the last, as there are no financial guarantees for the race to continue in Barcelona from next year.
TRUMP TOWERS by Alex Trelinski
WORLD CUP PICKS
England captain Steph Houghton will lead a 23-strong squad to the Women’s World Cup in France this summer. Head coach Phil Neville has named 11 players who will be making their World Cup debuts, while Karen Carney and Jill Scott will head to a fourth tour-
nament. Izzy Christiansen has not been selected following an ankle injury in March, while 168cap veteran Fara Williams also misses out on the squad. England begin their campaign against Scotland on Sunday June 9th.
Judd Trump says he took satisfaction from “proving the doubters wrong” with his first World Championship title win at Sheffield´s Crucible Theatre on Monday. Trump, 29, said he received a tweet when he was 6-3 down to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in the first round which said he was “bottling it again”. He edged through that in a final-frame decider and reached the final where he dismantled John Higgins 18-9. “I am going to reply to the tweet,” Trump said with a grin. “It had given me the fire.” A breathtaking final saw a record 11 centuries being compiled, with Trump contributing seven. Trump said: “You don’t bottle it this day and age; there are so many tough players.” “So for me just to go out there and, not prove everyone wrong because I’ve got a lot of support as well, but just to prove some of the people that put you down for no reason, it is nice to do that.” by Alex Trelinski
Costa Blanca tennis ace David Ferrer ended his career at the Madrid Open on Wednesday night. The 37-year-old Javea man lost his round-of-32 match to defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 in 71 minutes. After losing, Ferrer received a standing ovation from the crowd at the packed ‘Magic Box’ centre court, then went back to leave his headband on the ground near the net, as Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ played over the speakers. The popular player announced his retirement last year, playing a number of selected tournaments in Spain, before bowing out in Madrid this week.
SPANISH STROLL
Spain´s world champion Marc Marquez won the Spanish MotoGP at Jerez last Sunday ahead of fellow Spaniards Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales. Marquez led from start to finish and went top of the championship table with his victory after falling in the last race in Texas.. “I’m happy to win this race, and especially happy to do it in this way, because this was the target,” Marquez said. “It was the plan, be-
cause after the mistake in Austin I said I would like to arrive at Jerez and try to win in the same way, and we did it..” Having won two of the four GPs so far this season, Marquez leads the world championship standings with 70 points, one more than Alex Rins on 69 while Italy´s Andrea Dovizioso is third on 67. The next race is in France on Sunday May 19th at the Bugatti Circuit near Le Mans.
SHOWPIECE FINAL
FAREWELL FERRER St. James’ Park football ground in Newcastle will tomorrow host the biggest match in European club rugby, as Leinster and Saracens clash in the 2019 Heineken Champions Cup final(6.00 pm kick-off, live on Channel Four and BT Sport). Saracens have won all eight of their European matches this season, including defeating Glasgow for a third time this season, 56-27 in the quarter-finals, and then Munster Rugby 32-16 in their semi-final in Coventry. Leinster have had a more

dramatic run to the final, having had a ten-match winning run in the tournament ended by fellow four-time winners Toulouse 28-27 in Pool 1. However, they responded with four successive victories to clinch a home quarter-final and made full use of that advantage in a battling 21-18 success over fellow Irish province Ulster Rugby at the Aviva Stadium, before reaching a second successive final with a 30-12 win over Toulouse at the same venue.

Europe captain Padraig Harrington will choose three wildcards instead of four when his team defend the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straights next year. Nine players will qualify

automatically with points earned in tournaments from the BMW PGA Championship in September until the same event in 2020.
“In my experience, a player is more comfortable when he has qualified automatically,” said Harrington. Europe thrashed the United States 17½-10½ to regain the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Brailsford said it was a “real shame” Bernal had to withdraw but said that the highly-rated Colombian will be “fighting fit” for July, with the 2019 Tour de France starting in Brussels on Saturday, July 6th. It is the British team’s first Grand Tour since Ineos
took over from Sky as title sponsors earlier this month. Chris Froome, the 2018 champion, will not be competing in the three-week race. The 2019 Giro d’Italia begins with a 8.2km individual time trial in Bologna, with the route featuring another two time trials and seven summit finishes.
BLUBBING HASKELL by Alex Trelinski
The 2018/19 Premier League title chase all comes down to a couple of hours this Sunday afternoon, with all the matches starting off at 4.00 pm(Spanish time). It´s Manchester City´s to lose, but they will have a cock-a-hoop and euphoric Liverpool breathing down their necks, as they entertain a good Wolves side at Anfield, whilst City have to go south for a repeat of their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton. The Seagulls will be in a happy mood after rele-

gation fears were banished last weekend, which means the nerves will feature very much in Pep Guardiola´s side, who but for a Kompany screamer, would have dropped two home points against Leicester on Monday night. Let´s face it, the odds of Liverpool winning the title are a zillion times better compared to what punters would have said about the Reds disposing of Barcelona on Tuesday night, so any-
thing can happen! City are a point clear of Liverpool, and so must win to guarantee retaining their title, assuming that Liverpool beat Wolves. If Liverpool draw and City lose, assuming that Brighton don´t thrash the Blues, then the title will return to the Etihad on goal difference. There is a crazy scenario that could see a special playoff match being staged, but let´s put that to one side, and appreciate one of the best Premier League battles in years.
England flanker James Haskell says he “blubbed” in front of his Northampton teammates when he told them he would be retiring at the end of the season. The back row, 34, was capped 77 times by his country, winning three Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam. “I said goodbye to the lads the
other day and I broke down, I blubbed in front of them. I couldn’t get my words out. I didn’t expect that,” he said. “I just couldn’t speak and I cried. There are a lot of emotions with it.” Former Wasps player Haskell has struggled with ankle and toe problems this season, making only four appearances.

SIMPLY SENSATIONAL
Two extraordinary comebacks within 24 hours in the Champions League semifinals mean that Liverpool and Tottenham fans have a Madrid date for the final on Saturday June 1st. It will be the second allEnglish final in the competition after Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow in 2008. In arguably the best-ever second leg semi-final revivals, Spurs and Liverpool fought against the odds, with the London side making the Champions League final for the very first time, whilst the Reds will look to banish memories of last year´s

three-one defeat to Real Madrid. If anything, the Wednesday night win for Spurs at Ajax surpassed Liverpool´s four-nil comeback against Barcelona at Anfield the previous evening. Trailing one-nil from the first leg, it looked all over for Spurs in Amsterdam, as the home side stretched their advantage to three-nil. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored twice through Lucas Moura within five minutes in the second half, but trailing threetwo on aggregate they needed an equaliser which would get them through on the away goals rule.
Ajax looked to have survived until Moura popped up for his hat-trick in the sixth minute of added time, as the home players just collapsed on the ground in disbelief. The previous night, Barcelona´s star players looked out of sorts at Anfield, as Liverpool ruled the roost to overcome a three-nil deficit, and to run out four-nil victors amidst massive home jubilation. The fact that Liverpool and Tottenham delivered without star players Mo Salah and Harry Kane adds to the enormity of their achievements, and now Madrid awaits the English invasion next month!
INTERCITY CHAMPIONS
The battle continues this weekend to see who will join CF Intercity in the Preferente Group Four play-offs, with just one point separating three sides, one of whom will be disappointed once the remaining two regular matches have been played. Intercity(pictured post-match) disposed of Benidorm CD, four-nil, to become league champions, but the good news for Benidorm is that a draw this weekend
by Alex Trelinski
against Aspe will mathematically guarantee their status for next season, with CD Torrevieja and Villena CF already down. CFI Alicante and Hercules B are both on 68 points, after home wins over CD Thader and Redovan respectively, whilst Villajoyosa CF are a point behind, after a one-nil victory at Elda. This weekend, Villajoyosa have home advantage
against Callosa, whilst Hercules at UD there are harder trips Ilicitana. to come for CFI at Leaders Intercity CD Almoradi, and go to Orihuela B.
