Firefighters at El Palmeral

A MAN tried to commit suicide in his Torrevieja flat on Thursday morning by setting fire to it, with two Guardia Civil officers risking their own lives to rescue him. Two firefighters were injured as they put out the blaze, with the 50-year-old tenant arrested by the Guardia officers, Jorge Albadalejo and Justo Ros, who last year received commendations for saving the lives of three children in two rescues in the sea off Torrevieja. The drama unfolded after 5.00 am at the apartment block at the El Palmeral urbanisation on Avenida Mariano Ruiz Cánovas next to Torrevieja´s Los Locos beach. Guardia officers Albadalejo and Ros were first on the scene and tried

to access the first-floor flat by trying to control the blaze with fire extinguishers. The flames were too intense, and they bravely scampered up the front of the building and got into the man´s residence via the balcony, and took him into custody. Two firemen were taken to hospital, as one suffered from tachycardia, and the other fractured his foot, after it got trapped on the steps of the mechanical fire ladder used in the operation. 15 residents were evacuated, and no serious injuries were reported, though five people including two girls aged under nine, were treated on site for smoke inhalation.

Hiding the past

EXCLUSIVE

UNDER INVESTIGATION

The Weekender newspaper has been given information in the last few days that may lead to the arrest of a British person who is a key and prominent business person living and working here in Spain. It is all too often that we have seen news reports of people that have fled their country to hide away from

the authorities and think that Spain is far enough away to hide away from their true identities. After having had this information passed on to us. an investigation is now underway to ascertain the current position with a past bench warrant for the arrest of this person for non-attendance as a co-defendant in a criminal

court case dating back to the 1990’s. That case involved a wellknown journalist from Salford who was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to serve time in Strangeways prison, following a car crash where the person involved claimed he had not been the driver at the time. The co-defendant (unnamed at this time) is a person that is said to have fled

to Spain under a past name to avoid justice being served for the same crime and has since become a key figure in the public domain of British expatriates working and living in Spain. Police are now working to discover the facts of this report and to identify the person being named as the absconder that could lead to their arrest and extradition back to the UK.
