TORREVIEJA’S health department, which covers a dozen municipalities including Pilar de la Horadada a n d Rojales, has launched its annual flu vaccination campaign.

The Murcia region’s annual government-led push for influenza jabs will start next month.

centres and clinics and says it is planning to increase the number of vaccinations on offer, with over 28 thousand people getting the jab in last winter’s campaign.

The vaccines are available free to groups like the over-65’s; people with existing conditions who may suffer complications from flu; pregnant women; and children with certain ailments.

Preventive Medicine at Torrevieja Hospital said:-”It is very important that vaccinations be carried out every year, because the protection from a previous jab reduces, and also there are different strains of flu each winter”.

“Flu vaccines are highly safe despite the rumours that swirl around, and the campaign has started now because it normally takes a fortnight for the antibodies to kick in,” .Dr. Román added.

Finestrat shooting On arrival at the property, the agents discovered the two lifeless bodies and called for senior detectives and forensic offers to attend the scene.

Maria, who had worked as a waitress at several cafes in Finestrat, was found with wounds to her neck and back, whilst Pedro who was employed by a construction company, died from a single gunshot.

Although the officers believe Pedro, who they are told was the ex partner of Maria, killed her, before turning the gun on himself, they are also investigating the possibility that her current partner, who alerted the incident, could be involved.

Ranting air rage racist to be prosecuted in Spain A story that has quickly made the leap from UK social media to extensive coverage in the global mainstream has taken a dramatic turn, as Spanish authorities have confirmed they will be prosecuting an airline passenger caught in a racist tirade. The elderly white man, now named as David Mesher aged 70, was seen calling 77 year old Delsie Gayle a string of names after staff on the Ryanair flight, which was on the runway at Barcelona, tried to sit her next to Mr Mesher.

As well as the obvious reaction to the man’s rant, Ryanair has also received criticism for not taking action with many feeling Mr Mesher should have been removed from the plane. Most passengers also stood by doing little while the pensioner was verbally abused. The story may have ended there but Barcelona’s Deputy Mayor,

Jaume Asens, called Ryanair’s response “unacceptable” and has reported the incident to Spanish prosecutors.

A “Daily Mirror” reporter tried to interview Mr Mesher at his home in Birmingham but he refused to speak to them. However his neighbours were more forthcoming calling him ” a racist pig and a bully” who blared out classical music at all hours and refused to turn it down. Mrs Gayle also spoke to the Mirror saying the whole incident had left her feeling depressed and shocked.

Kids used for s hoplifting spree A 33 year old woman has been arrested in Elche accused of eight counts of shoplifting, crimes carried out with the help of her three young children. The case came to light when police received several

complaints of theft from local stores.

They believed there was a link and studied several hours of CCTV footage for clues. The common link

they found was a woman and her four children, one of them a baby or toddler in a pushchair.

It appeared that she was entering the shop and talking with staff or generally diverting them. Her oldest

three kids would then steal goods while the shopkeeper was occupied.

Items stolen included mobile phones, wallets and even money from the cash register. Police were able to identify the woman and this week

arrested and charged her on several counts of theft. Her eldest child, aged 15, also faces charges, although two younger ones who were also involved are under criminal age.

They are aged 9 and 11.

Benidorm gambling pub faces closure

The future of a Benidorm bar hangs in the balance, after police discovered illegal gambling activity taking place on the premises.

Local Police officers, who were on a routine patrol around the Rincon de Loix area of the resort early last Saturday afternoon, became suspicious when they saw a man leaving the Winning Post pub, on Calle Cuenca carrying a large amount of money and slips of paper.

When questioned, the man explained the purpose of his visit to the bar, which prompted the officers to enter the premises.

Once inside they discovered many more customers, placing bets on various sporting events, an activity which is illegal in Spain outside of licensed premises, which are

regulated by strict gambling laws.

Following the intervention, the police officers confiscated five screens and around 1500€ in cash.

A police source later confirmed that a report had been sent to the ministry of justice, who will make a judgement on the future of the pub in due course.

The Spanish are a nation of gamblers and bet a higher proportion of their income than almost any other nation.

Estimates suggest, that they gamble well over € 1.9 billion a year equal to around € 480 per head or some 15 per cent of the average net household income.

They bet on almost anything, including

lotteries, football and racing pools, horse racing (illegal betting shops, where punters bet on foreign horse and greyhound racing, are common in resort areas), bingo, slot machines and casinos.

However, the gambling industry is governed by strict regulations, designed to curb illegal betting activities, which take place without their knowledge and revenue earning capability.

Even, seemingly innocent games of bingo organised by bar owners to generate custom, (often called names such as ‘housey-housey’), are technically against the law in Spain, where ‘Bingo’ is a registered state owned activity only allowed to take place in large bingo halls situated in each town and city.

Fire-fighter dies as rain pummels the Costas

THE predicted “gota fria” rains hit many parts of the north and south Costas at the end of last week with meteorologists saying it was the heaviest rainfall in a decade. In the Malaga region a fireman was swept away after his fire engine overturned. His colleagues escaped but sadly the body of the man, named as Jose Gil, was found the next day.

Andalusia’s emergency services received over 500 calls in a 24 hour period said the authorities.

In the Valencian Community the worst hit area was Castellon which experienced road closures and severe flooding with over 70 people having to be rescued from cars despite warnings to only make vital journeys. In Valencia province La Safor, especially the Tavernes and Gandia area, was badly hit on Friday morning with 220 square litres falling in a few hours and most roads being impassable. Alicante province got off relatively lightly in comparison although some towns still experienced extremely heavy

Corvera transfers

FOUR out of the five airlines that used San Javier airport this year, will be transferring their operations to the new facility at Corvera, which will finally open in January, as San Javier closes.

The one exception is British Airways, who said earlier this month that they would be scrapping their twice-weekly summer service to Heathrow, because it did not make enough money.

AENA have talked with Iberia and Volotea about operating from Corvera, but nothing has happened so far, despite the new airport long being trumpeted as a way of

Ryanair Fall

LOW COST carrier Ryanair has blamed strikes by pilots and cabin crew for a slide in half-year profits over the summer, but maintained its forecasts for the full year.

The airline reported a seven per cent fall in profits to €1.2bn for the six months to the end of September..

Jihadi suspects traced to urbanisation

through social media and had gained hundreds of followers of their on-line incitements to hatred and violence. The police raided early on the morning of 23 October and say that the investigation is still continuing.

RUSSIANS ACQUITTED JUDGES at Spain’s National Court have acquitted 17 Russians over alleged largescale money-laundering in Spain on behalf of the Russian mafia.

A Russian MP, Vladislav Reznik, was among those acquitted. Nine other suspects remain at large, including alleged gang boss Gennady Petrov.

The court found insufficient proof that the Russians’ investments in Spain involved the proceeds of organised crime.

The case focused on the so-called Tambovskaya-Malyshevskaya gang.

Prosecutors had accused the gang, based in St Petersburg, of channelling cash from offshore bank accounts into Spanish

Teen abused ­ A thousand kilometres by policeman from home

THE family of a teenager allegedly sexually abused by a police officer after she went to report a crime are asking how the man is still allowed to continue in his role while he awaits trial.

The event has just come to light now but happened last month when the 18 year old had her phone stolen in the Madrid area of Arguanzuela.

She went to the police station to report the theft and the officer who dealt with her at first seemed sympathetic.

However she alleges he suddenly bundled her into a nearby bathroom and started groping and kissing her. The young woman managed to escape and ran

home from the station where the clearly traumatised teenager told her family what had happened. They immediately went to the same station to report the officer and an investigation was opened as well as a disciplinary file.

However the accused officer remains active due to a quirk in the law, something many are questioning.

Campaigners have also pointed out that in the most notorious rape case of recent years, the Pamplona “wolf pack”, one of the accused was a Guardia Civil officer and another in the military.

WORRIED residents in La Galia, a small village near Elche, reported the appearance of a man who appeared in the municipality apparently lost and disorientated, wearing dishevelled clothing. The local police spoke to the man who said he had no documentation; he indicated he had driven his car to the village but was unable to give more details including where he

Spotlight on sewage

ALCOY is using new technology to help with the massive task of inspecting and repairing the town’s 115-kilometre long sewage network.

The Works and Services Department admitted that the drainage system had been neglected at times on the basis of out of sight and out of mind. One of the main issues is the incorrect disposal of items such as wet wipes that are not biodegradable or suitable for flushing.

An awareness campaign among residents is planned to help address this issue. Aqualia also now has the responsibility of cleaning the cities 5,500 drains and 4,400 wells.

NO ABANDONED or stray animals will be put down in the Murcia region, with the regional government in Spain set to be the first in the country to introduce such a measure.

Study rejects gypsum mine

CAMPAIGNERS against plans for a gypsum mine in San Miguel de Salinas have got a big boost, with the news that the Valencian government’s environment department has come down strongly against the potential project.

The report actually does not oppose the three-year geological survey proposed by the Torralba Group, but rejects any work that might happen after the feasibility study, saying that it would “do irreparable damage” to the environment.

Over 800 people, including councillors from all political parties, took to the streets of San Miguel almost a fortnight ago to protest against the gypsum mine plans.

The final decision on whether to allow a feasibility study rests with the Valencian government, who now have their own environmental department’s report to look at.

Lunchtime temper tantrum A COLLISION between two cars in Cartagena raised the temperature of one driver, who pulled out a knife to confront the other motorist.

The prang happened on Paseo Alfonso XIII in the city last Friday lunchtime, with the local police quickly arriving on the scene to stop things getting out of control.

The knife-man has been charged for possessing a dangerous weapon.

Doggy splash ON THE BACK of last summer’s controversial introduction of dog beaches in Torrevieja, the council has organised an event this weekend which once again mixes dogs and water.

Sports councillor Víctor Ferrández, says that dog owners will be able to swim with their dogs this Saturday and Sunday at Torrevieja’s outdoor swimming pool at Sports City.

The free sessions will run between 11.00 am and 2.30 pm on both days.

Ferrández said that all dog owners would have to bring all the appropriate documentation over their pets with them, and also sign a declaration., Ferrández added:- “This weekend sees the closure of the pool until next year, and so we are happy to provide a chance for dogs to enjoy a special experience, as Torrevieja considers itself to be a pet friendly city”.

Car plant workers concerned at cutbacks

FORD has announced plans to stop production for a period at its giant plant in Almussafes near Valencia. The shut down is scheduled to be for 21 days in total over November and December with vehicle manufacturing being halted for 9 days and engine making for 13. Pneumococcal vaccine

pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. It’s also known as the pneumonia vaccine.

3 Steps to Help Manage Depression Sadness and grief are normal human emotions.

These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern.

It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning. A major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms:

NEW Peugeot 508 Most second-generation vehicles have the wrinkles of the car that went before them ironed out. That’s how the second iteration of the Peugeot 508 feels.

Although the original 508 wasn´t broken, except that initially it was powered solely by a turbodiesel engine, this latest generation 508 gets a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with an eight-speed automatic box.

The 508 is a surprisingly lightweight vehicle although it’s almost 4.8m long. There’s more power available than with the first generation, much more in the case of the top of the line GT model.

The modern downsized turbocharged engines are about finding the ideal mix of fuel efficiency and feistiness. The new 508 certainly feels livelier on account of its improved power-to-weight ratio.

The standard new 508 weighs 1420kg with a 0-100km/h of approximately seven seconds. The original 508 was slower at approximately nine

seconds. A 1.6 turbo petrol engine was added to the original 508 line up later on in its life but the latest example offers more power still, even in base form. It is also at least 70kg lighter thanks to a new platform and the use of lightweight materials like aluminium for the bonnet, boot and front wings.

There is also a welcome increase in efficiency, partly as the result of two extra cogs in the transmission and improved aerodynamics. Combined fuel use figures for both new 508 models are improved.

The new 508 provides 487L of easily accessible luggage space that expands to an almost flat 1537L area

after decommissioning the seat backs.

The boot door is now powered, both for opening and closing, even on the base model. The slightly lower body helps create a more athletic look and improved dynamics. The

overall styling raises the emotional appeal dramatically. Gone is the cool conservative look and in its place a more sporting, muscular and almost predatory outline befitting of the lion badge. Peugeot calls it ‘elegant aggression’.

The front fascia now sports LED headlights in the top GT model. Both this and the GT Line have what has become the de rigueur grille design, with a jewelled appearance. At the rear it’s the same story, with more pronounced cat’s

claws in the three sets of taillights each side, giving an impression of extra width.

While it can’t match the badge appeal of its German rivals, it puts up a fair fight in a highly competitive class.

Ford will re-open the application window to customers in selected markets, including the UK, for one month, beginning Nov. 8, delivering approximately 1,350 Ford GTs for customers worldwide.

Nothing or no one, it seems, is going to rain on Danny Tetley’sparade, as the Benidorm singer’s X Factor journey continues into another week.

Danny spent most of last week fending off personal questions from journalists, following former friend Ashley Power’s revelations describing his recent battles with drugs and drink.

Then on his first live show, the Bradford born singer was completely thrown, when the announcer called the name of another contestant Anthony

Russell, forcing the singer to pause and ask to begin his performance again.

No worries for our Danny as he sailed through to next week, with a growing army of fans behind him.

Following my Weekender story last week, we received a photo from a couple of likely lads, wearing appropriate T shirts of support for Danny, so thanks Norman Darlington and Paul Humphries, wear those shirts with pride …… and keep the ‘Tetley Faith’

Jamie Lee Halloween Queen Forty years on from her appearance in the original Halloween movie, Jamie Lee Curtis returned to movie screens this week, to reprise her iconic role in the eleventh and possibly final edition of the franchise.

Returning to play, Laurie Strode, who faces her final confrontation with nemesis Michael Myers, played by Nick Castle in Halloween 2018, Jamie has expressed her delight at the movie’s opening weekend success in the states.

This week, Jamie Lee took to social media to share her excitement at how successful the latest Halloween flick has been.

She wrote on Twitter: ‘OK. I’m going for one BOAST post. Biggest horror movie opening with a female lead. Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55.

The fifty nine year old actress, daughter of movie legend Tony Curtis, ended the post with the hashtag #womengetthingsdone.

The likeable and self deprecating star also told an Australian TV show that acting in a movie is not hard work, compared to most people’s everyday jobs.

‘Well let me say this, I’m in Australia. People work hard in Australia. They work hard all over the world but the people and friends I have here in Australia, people work really hard,’ Jamie Lee said.

‘And so for me to say it was hard work, somebody should like literally tell me to shut up.’

Good old Jamie, you’ve definitely gone up a few notches in my book, even though you do have a look of Paul O’ Grady about you these days.

My Eyes Strictly dramas Car show Friday 26tH OCtOBEr 2018

Only a few weeks into the interminable Strictly Come Dancing marathon, whi seems to go on and on and on forever ch through the mists of Autumn into the snows of Christmas.

Already, controversy and drama circ les the top rated show, involving a kiss between comedian Seann Walsh and partner Katya Jones, which should or shouldn ’t have happened, depending which side of the sequinned fence you sit.

Finding themselves in the elimination dance off last Sunday, the pair survived cha chacha into another week at the to expense of someone called Vick Hop e and her exotically named partner Graziano Di Primi, (yes, you guessed it …. Italian with long hair and shirt slashed to waist!).

Apparently Vick got herself into hot water, by revealing on her Capital Rad io breakfast show, that producers had a discussion before the judges gave their final decision on Sunday night’s results sho w.

A BBC spokesperson immediately defe nded the show by telling Radio Times allegations were incorrect. that the “It is categorically untrue to imply that producers tell the judges how to sco who to save,” the spokesperson said re or . “Each judge votes on each dance inde pendently, based on its merits and in their expert opinion alone.

“The judges use an electronic voting pad to transmit their score or choice of who to save to the production gallery which is then locked in and cannot be cha nged.

“Only after this does a producer spe ak to the judges, advising them on how long they have to speak and reminding them to give a reason for their decisions. The process was exactly the same this weekend.”

Hard to believe it’s three years, since the acrimonious split between the BBC and former Top Gear presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, who took their questionable talents and massive egos off to Amazon TV in a multimillion pound deal.

Whilst their new show, The Grand Tour, currently in filming for series 3 due to air later this year, goes from strength to strength, their old programme has been through nearly enough presenters to fill a minibus.

Clarkson is set to hang up his keys temporarily, so that he can become the new presenter of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, due for an imminent revival on ITV for ten programmes in 2019.

He joked that he would be using the series to get away from his The Grand Tour co-hosts May and Hammond.

Meanwhile, over at the Beeb, two new presenters have been unveiled to follow in the footsteps of Chris Evans, who stood down after one ill-fated series and Friends star Matt

Leblanc who announced he was leaving after the next season of the show.

New hosts, Paddy McGuinness and Andrew Flintoff, will begin their duties early next year, joining existing presenter and former racing driver Chris Harris to complete the new-look line-up.

Quite what a comedian and former England cricket captain can do to revive the ailing car show remains to be seen, but if viewers turn off, it will surely be “No likey …. No lighty!”

Elche international rugby 7´s returns

International rugby returns to Elche at the weekend of 3 and 4 November at the Elche Football Stadium for the IV Elche International Rugby Tournament.

This years teams taking place of the men’s teams are Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Russia, Germany and the Viator Barbarians, and for the women are Spain, England,

Ireland, France, Holland, Belgium, France B and the Viator Barbarians.

The Viator Barbarians team are players from Fiji UK, UK Marauders, Samurai and Spain.

This is becoming an annual event now so let us keeping it going as it is great for the sport to have such quality of international rugby in the area.

It kicks off at 10.00 and finishes at around 19.00 on both days and the tickets are 15€ each for both days so excellent value for money to see top class international rugby here in Spain.

Ruby´s Golf captains day This fixture always sparks a lot of interest from our members and this year was no exception.

28 players (would have been more if we could have gotten more tee times) divided into two teams, Captain versus Vice Captain, played out a Ryder cup style of match play.

George Marshall Dean, vice captain already one game down this year tried desperately to inspire his team to victory against the Captain, Dave Sheltons team.

First rubber went to the Vice captains team, very good start for George, second rubber also to the Vice Captain, excellent, George felt sure this was his day, unfortunately the

next five teams failed him and the Captain triumphed again, final score 5/2, unlucky George, there is always next year when you step up to the plate and become Captain.

The individual scores on the day were very good with nearest the pins from Peter List, Robert Scott and Nigel Wright, second place was taken by Theresa Wright with 39 points and the best score of the day of 40 points taking the Captains day trophy, an engraved glass ice bucket, was Jim McCarthy.

We returned to Rayz bar for the presentation where new owners Marrisa and Jamie provided us with a nice buffet of chicken curry and rice and sandwiches, many thanks for being

such nice hosts guy’s.

At the presentation we had a couple of raffles and also auctioned off some golf vouchers from Vistabella golf, and meal vouchers from Stan and Ollies many thanks to them for their generous donations. All the money raised from the raffles and auctions was donated to the Captains charity, Bright futures of Bardia which is run by our members Jayne Hannam and Steve James.

Another great day and evening with lots of fun and banter many thanks to the Captain, Vice Captain and committee for all their hard work.

Monday’s ‘counter game’ saw some welcome new names to the leader board with none other than Liverpool football legend, Gary Gillespie, together with his wife Dianne, Nick Campbell and Reg Akehurst taking top place with 99 points. Gary (who plays golf off a four handicap) was the back bone of the hugely successful Liverpool team from 1984 to 1991 and also won 13 caps for Scotland during this time.

Wednesday’s Stableford saw a great turnout together with some very good scores.

Heinz Lei with 34 points only made it into sixth place! Our winner with 39 points was Lindsay Forbes who just held off Joyce McClusky who managed 38. In third, with 37, was Nigel Price followed

by Pete Dunn with 36. In 5th spot, with 35 points, was Ken Robertson.Four ‘2’s today, one of which I’m pleased to say went to me!

Also sharing the pot were Lindsay Forbes, John Dobson and Pete Dunn.

Our week finished with a closely fought ‘Change Partners’. Taking 1st place were Bryan Neal, Dave Pulling, Rod Doel and Maria Oldenziel with a very commendable 86 points.

CD Torrevieja

Club Deportivo Torrevieja has reached an agreement with Joaquín López Martínez (Montpellier, 1971) better known as Kiko López, to become the new coach of the first team. López has strong ties with the neighbouring municipality of Los Montesinos as well as with our city, and he comes highly recommended by the Club’s sports director Juanjo Fernández.

As a UEFA PRO football coach, Kiko López posesses the highest coaching qualification obtainable from the footballing sphere, above that of the Licencia UEFA A and Licencia UEFA B titles. Kiko López has an outstanding professional career, working with Real Madrid CF for 10 years and training top teams in countries such as China, Tunisia, Kuwait and the Under-17 and Under-19 teams for Bahrain.

Working alongside Kiko, the Club has appointed Francisco José Guillén Llamusi (Elche, 1976) “Paco Guillén”, who will work as assistant coach. His most recent success was ensuring the promotion of CD Almoradí

into the 3º División in the 2015-2016 season.

CD Torrevieja welcomes both coaches to the Club and wishes them the greatest success in their work.

This coming Sunday, 28 October at 11.45h at Torrevieja’s Nelson Mandela Stadium, CD Torrevieja faces Aspe UD in the ninth match of the season.

This is an important match for the Salineros as it will be the first match the team plays led by the new coaching staff and Kiko López at the reins. And with renewed hopes, the team are determined to win so they do not lose their place in the top half of the league table.

The Club would also like to remind everyone that the period in which you can acquire your 2018/19 season ticket is still open, and all you have to do is come to the head office located at Calle Caballero de Rodas, nº56.

Just one point separates the top five teams in Preferente Group Four, with four of those sides meeting this weekend, after last week’s fixtures were all postponed.

Sergio Garcia capped his superb performance in the Ryder Cup last month, to gain a personal triumph on Monday to win his first tournament of the year.

It meant a lot to the Spaniard, as he recorded a dominating four shot victory on home soil at the Valderrama Masters, an event which he has now won for the last three years.

The victory made Garcia the first player to win the same European Tour title three times in a row since Ernie Els in 2004 when he won a third Heineken Classic in Melbourne.

The tournament in Andalucia, which is hosted by by Alex Trelinski Garcia’s charitable foundation, was heavily hit by even after being reduced to thunderstorms and had to 54 holes.
