LOVE REVENGE

KILLING AN IRISH drugs dealer killed over a suspected “love triangle” was beaten to death before his body was dumped off the AP-7 motorway on the stretch between Benijófar and Algorfa in the Vega Baja region. The Guardia Civil found the remains of 38-year-old Carl Carr last week, some five months after he went “missing” from a Cabo Roig club, and arrested four suspects. Carr was one of three men

jailed in December 2008 in Ireland after being caught with 1.43 million euros of heroin and cocaine, and moved to Spain after being released three years ago. The Guardia said that Carr was killed by his flatmate, 31-year-old Irish national Wayne Walsh,

Not in the best light

TWO drunken British people getting treated at Torrevieja Hospital have featured in a television programme on the national network, Cuatro. The show is called Heroes, and has two disorientated Brits being treated after one is believed to have fallen and hit her head. Clearly intoxicated, neither of the women can recall what happened before they can be seen falling asleep on their hospital beds. According to the doctors in the clip, dealing with drunk Brits is ‘not out of the ordinary’ in Torrevieja.

When asked why she was bleeding, the Brit, from Scotland, says ‘I don’t know’ before telling her nurse how ‘beautiful’ he is. The other Brit then starts dancing with nurse Rico to ‘celebrate divorcing her husband.’ The clip posted on the Cuatro Facebook page unsurprisingly brought some angry comments like “This is shameful! They come to the country to abuse our health system and get up to their eyebrows in alcohol!” Others supported the women.

Ethical Investing

It is no longer just something for a few tree-hugging individuals In a world that is becoming more and more focused on the environment and ways to protect it, it is no wonder that I am being asked more and more about ethical investments.

Ethical investors were historically driven by their focus on doing what was best for the environment and communities and often this meant their investment could sometimes suffer. But times are changing and investing ethically can now be very rewarding. When a company owned by

Warren Buffett (one of the world’s most successful investors) bought a stake in BYD, then a little-known Chinese car company, some sceptics were ridiculing the 2008 deal. Car and Driver, an industry magazine, commented that it was “hard to take BYD seriously” because many of its cars seemed to be copies of older Japanese models, while their performance was lacklustre. “We drive faster in our driveways,” the magazine said. But Mr Buffettis now more than vindicated and the Chinese company’s focus on electric cars and climate-friendly motoring is delivering on the promise concealed in its acronym — Build Your Dreams. Its shares are trading at roughly 21 times forward earnings, or 2.5 times the ratio when Mr Buffett bought in. The deal stands as an example of how investing in renewable technologies can pay off and since 2008, BYD has become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles.

Smoker dad loses custody THE Provincial Court in Cordoba has removed the custody rights of a father who “constantly” smoked cigarettes in front of his children when at home. The mother had made the appeal on the grounds of her children’s health, saying the smoke filled environment was not a fit place for the 13 and 10 year old to spend regular time. Another factor was that one of the children had to sleep in the smoke filled living room and that that father had made no effort to stop the habit or smoke

Train strikes called off!

GOOD news for anyone planning to travel to the Communities capital as the Metro strike that has hit Valcencia City has been called off, for the time being at least. A pre-agreement has been reached between the unions, the rail operator and Ministry of Public Works that Metro workers will receive a phased in wage increase, providing

To pee or not to pee

Competitors in the Vuelta de Costa Blanca cycle race were forced to urinate on a Benidorm beach.

Residents of two apartment blocks in Benidorm have expressed their outrage at the lack of toilet facilities provided for events that take place on their beachfront. The situation was brought to light again last Sunday, when the final stage of the Vuelta de Costa Blanca cycle race began on the seafront promenade in the La Cala de Benidorm area of the resort, which sits at the southern end of Poniente Beach. The quiet, residential zone, is considered to be one of the more upmarket areas of Benidorm, with its wide beach, large villas and prestigious apartment buildings and is a popular starting point for sporting

events for cycling, running and triathlons. The complaints were registered by residents of theEmperatriz and Ulia buildings, which sit directly on the frontline overlooking the beach, where cyclists and spectators were preparing for the race. They witnessed a number of competitors in the race urinating on the beach as no portable toilet facilities were provided to cater for the event. A formal complaint from community president of ResidenciaUlia said, “We are tired of having to endure all the sporting events that are organised here and, now, we

have to witness this.” He lamented, in particular, the bad organisation of the event due to the lack of portable toilets provided for public use, compounded by the fact that many bars in this area of the resort are closed during the low, winter season. The lack of public toilet facilities in general is something which angers residents and business owners in most of the regions busy resorts. The situation worsens during the many cultural festivals, fiestas and sporting events which take place throughout the year, when bar owners are expected to open their toilets for use by non-customers, who often do not even buy a drink.

A 34-YEAR-old married bricklayer from Villena who exposed himself in front of an 18-year-old girl after following her from the IES Playa Flamenca college on the Orihuela Costa, has already paid dearly for his actions. found the body, which has now been taken away for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death and hopefully give clues as to the man’s identity. In the December incident at least five men were involved, Spanish

and Colombians, of which two were wounded while one evaded capture. Investigation of this incident later led to the discovery of a cocaine laboratory in Petrer along with a cache of weapons. Three further

people were arrested as a result of this raid but police believed at the time that other gang members were still at large. The latest macabre discovery may well be a settling of scores according to police sources.

THE TRIAL of 12 Catalan separatist leaders involved in a bid to secede from Spain will start this coming Tuesday in Madrid. Nine of the accused are charged with rebellion for their role in an illegal referendum in October 2017. They face up to 25 years in jail. In pre-trial detention for months, the nine were being transferred from Catalunya to prisons near Madrid last Friday. Supporters in Barcelona cheered them as they were taken away, waving the region’s red, yellow and blue separatist flag. Three others will also stand trial, accused of disobedience and misuse of public funds.

Coffin dodgers

Police at the funeral home’s crematorium

POLICE are investigating a scam at a funeral home that may have netted millions of Euros for it’s perpetrators. They began the investigation after allegations from an employee at a funeraria based in Valladolid, a major firm who also have businesses in several other parts of Spain. They have been accused of removing bodies from expensive coffins chosen by the deceaseds family and moving them to cheaper

ones. The casket is usually the most pricey part of a funeral service and can cost between €600 and €4,000. There has also been accusations that costly wreaths due to be destroyed in the cremation process were being removed and reused for other services. Apparently around a million Euros in cash was found at the home of one of the firm’s

owners. The company have refused to answer formal questions from the press and have said in a separate statement that “the matter is in the hands of their lawyers”. In a further statement the firm has alleged that the accusations amount to a blackmail attempt by a former employee. The firm employ around 70 people across different municipalities and staff are said to be concerned about their futures.

Accused

Callosa rapists appear in court Two of the men accused of drugging and raping a young woman in an alleged gang rape on New Years Day, appeared in a Villajoyosa court last week, where samples of hair were taken for toxicology tests. The request was made by defence counsel for the men, as blood and urine samples were not taken by Guardia Civil investigating officers at the scene of their arrest. One of the two men who appeared, was the so called leader of the gang of four accused, whilst another, currently incarcerated in Villena Prison, has requested the same test via his recently changed defence counsel. The two men, who were brought to court from Fontcalent Prison, appeared briefly, whilst the tests were conducted. Acquitted after nine months in jail

A judge in Alicante has absolved two men of their part in a vicious armed robbery for which they were previously convicted and had already served nine months in prison. They were originally found guilty of robbing a woman in Polop by ambushing her in her garage then beating her and threatening her with a gun. She was carrying €36,000 takings from a shop she ran in Benidorm, something the assailants seemed to be aware of.

by Simon Russell

After investigations the two men, aged 21 and 43, were arrested by the Guardia Civil. They were later charged with the theft and found guilty last year. However in the new appeal the judge has decreed that as the assailants were masked the identification was inconclusive. There was no other firm evidence linking the pair and they have been acquitted unconditionally.

Bamboo clue to panda problems

The WWF emblems man-made problems go back further than people thought.

A performer dessed as an emperor.

BILLIONS of people welcomed in the Asian New Year across the continent this week as they said goodbye to the Dog and hello to the Year of the Pig. The biggest holiday in Asia, and especially China’s, calendar saw tens of millions of people crisscrossing countries to spend time with relatives. While in most states the New Year is a one to two day holiday in China

the country closes for a whole week, partly as a nod to the vast distances may have to travel to be with family. As you would expect there were some lavish celebrations, with cities from Beijing to Seoul and Singapore putting on light shows, fireworks and wearing elaborate costumes. Although

to western ears the Pig may not sound like the most glamorous animal to mark such an occasion, in the Chinese zodiac it is a symbol of optimism, enthusiasm and hard work. There are also unexpected side effects as well, not least the surge in popularity of British cartoon character Peppa Pig across China with branded toys and clothing selling out across the country.

THE giant panda’s odd diet, a large creature “designed” as a meat eater that lives almost solely on bamboo, has long been blamed as one of the reasons why they have been facing extinction in the wild for so long. However recent research has thrown up some surprising discoveries that may help the iconic bears. It had been thought that panda’s added bamboo to their diet of about seven million years ago with it becoming their sole food about 2.5 million years ago. However, the new research shows the change could be very recent, maybe only about 5,000 years ago, a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms. This period marks the time when

by Simon Russell

humans first started making serious inroads into places and habitats they had never ventured into before and could be the reason for the change of diet, forced on the passive animals by lack of alternatives. Scientists have always puzzled about panda diets; they have a gut that is designed for an omnivorous diet and bamboo is notoriously difficult to gain the number of nutrients a creature of their size needs. They have to eat for at least 12 hours a day just to survive and as their only food choice becomes scarcer this is getting increasingly difficult.

POLICE in Lisbon have, not for the first time, been accused of institutionalised racism after videos of them assaulting residents in a predominantly ethnic neighbourhood of the Portuguese capital. Bairro da Jamaica has become home to many of the descendants of former African colonies of Portugal such as Angola and Mozambique. When they first moved over in the 1960s it was little more than a shanty town, but people that live there now regard it as a normal place to live and work with bars, offices and shopping areas much like the rest of Lisbon. However the area remains predominantly Afro-Caribbean and many Lisbon residents regard it as a no-go zone. Locals say this is unfair and indeed statistics show that crime rates are actually no higher than average for the city. The viral video

by Simon Russell

filmed last week shows police in Bairro da Jamaica beating, pushing and physically removing people after they were called out to an isolated incident, many of them women and children who were merely bystanders. This prompted a series of protests under the banner “stop racist police brutality” which in turn resorted in more police aggression, once again recorded and posted on-line. A community spokesman said that the Jamaica area is underfunded compared to the rest of Lisbon and when they complain people are treated as criminals. Lisbon Town Hall is reluctant to admit there is any racist problem with the city, which relies heavily on tourism; however recent incidents mean many would be forced to disagree with that assessment.

A Night at Crevillente Velodrome It was a drab, windy Tuesday evening to get on, we couldn’t believe how in January and for our usual Tuesday cheap it was. We cycled through the training night, we decided to head to gate and had to carry our bikes down Crevillente to try out the Velodrome a flight of steps, under which although a tunnel and there it was, it looked huge. We couldn’t wait to get going so off we went in single file at first then as we found our rhythm we soon split up and we did our own thing. After 6 laps we were absolutely exhausted and couldn’t believe how tiring it actually was, we stopped and took a few pictures and spoke to the Junior Crevillente we all Mountain Bike Group who had just cycle past on a regular basis arrived, we also spoke none of us has been on before. It was now completely dark but the floodlights were on the meaning we could stay as long as we liked. We continued lapping around the track going faster and faster each time, respecting the safety of the kids, we were also starting to get higher and higher at each end. After an hour we stopped and decided to time each other a few times to see who could do the fastest lap. This was brilliant and we were all at maximum effort for the complete lap, we then went into a 6 man team and did the Velodrome proper with the leader going high at the ends until the team passed through when he then dropped down onto the back of the pack. IF you have been in a Spanish shopping centre recently, chances are it had an H&M, the Swedish clothing retailer that is very popular with British and Spanish shoppers alike. However, globally the business is going through difficult times and they have just announced that their net profit for 2018 was 22% down on the previous year. Their CEO Karl-Johan Persson said it had been a

demanding year, both for his firm and the industry in general. A 5% increase in turnover did not translate to increased profits meaning margins are very tight with internet competition having an impact, although 14.5% of H&M’s sales were online. Profits in Spanish stores went against the global trend, increasing by 2%. However as part of their overall restructuring the firm is still going ahead with plans to close six stores in Spain this year.

(Overseas Asset Declaration) – Legal or Not?

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management

The goal is to allow tax authorities to obtain a clearer understanding of financial assets held abroad by residents for tax purposes. The information sharing is primarily aimed at preventing tax evasion. How do I make sure I get my financial reporting right? There are ways to ease this reporting burden and to ensure you stay on the right side of the taxman, whilst also minimising your tax liabilities. One such way is to use a tax compliant investment bond.

Over the last few years I have come across many expats, not just British but Dutch, Belgian and German, who have said to me “I am not doing the Modelo 720 as the EU has ruled it is illegal and also because the Spanish authorities will never find out if I don’t declare.” Sadly, I have to tell them that they are wrong on both counts. The current situation – Legality of Modelo 720 On 15 February 2017, the European Commission accepted that Spain has the right to require residents to declare overseas assets. Located in the South West of India, this coastal state is the smallest of all of India, however, is one of the richest, producing much more in the economy than other larger states close by, a large part of which is contributed by tourism in the area. It is popular with tourists, and very much so with British tourists who flock to the areas of Candolim& Calangute, stretches of white sandy

www.weekendernews.com

beaches which offer tourists ample areas to sunbathe and a host of tasty beachside places in which to indulge in the local fayre – a favorite being Goan curry, a tasty blend of herbs and spices, which is usually served with fish and seafood, or can also be with chicken. This fabulous dish and many others can be sampled at Mackies Night Bazaar, a stretch of some 100 stalls offering trinkets, jewellery, silks and other traditional souvenirs and gift items, interspersed with mouth-watering traditional food and snacks whilst local live musicians play in the area too. Open between November and April and located along the banks of the River Baga, this area is also one of the most happening night spots. Of course, there is much more to Goa than simply great beaches, nightlife and food! Amongst the very many attractions in the area, one must-see is the Brahma Temple, one of the oldest temples located in the Carambolim area. The temple is located in a peaceful and green area which lends beautifully to the history of this centuries-old temple. A deeply religious area, there are temples also devoted to healing powers, to promote peace &

harmony – you are sure to find some spiritual peace when visiting them. Think carefully of when to plan your visit – best times to visit Goa are between November and March when the weather is at it s best, warm and balmy with ´ a cooling breeze. April to May are in the summertime when the temperatures rise, leading to the June – September Monsoon season. October temperatures are in keeping with those of April and towards the end returning to more enjoyable temperatures. Prices do not hugely reflect these seasons, as generally, Goa is a very economical place to visit, the biggest expense being the flight to get there, and of course, the all-important visa that must be obtained prior to departure. Bear in mind when booking that Goa also is home to huge celebrations and fiestas – whether you want to participate or avoid at all costs! It is a colourful and vibrant destination, so even when there are no fiestas planned, there is still sure to be a party going on somewhere!

RESALES DOMINATE

Property sales are continuing to rise in Spain, but the new home market as it relates to foreign buyers appears to be low across the country, according to a report in the El Confidencial newspaper. This means there is increasing competition among modern property developments, and this proliferation of choice may be one of the reasons why they don’t sell as quickly as before. Another factor is the rise in property prices, which due to limited land and growing construction costs, have increased significantly and more rapidly than those of resale homes. The latter are now seen to offer a lot more home for your money. Therefore there has been a notable shift towards resale properties in recent times, and especially in relation to

by Alex Trelinski

the pre-recession years, when over 60 per cent of all property transactions involving non-Spanish buyers were new. So, while demand is strong many experts worry about the lack of appetite for new homes. A greater worry is the added time and cost caused by building licences delays and maybe this is a frustration that potential buyers feel as well, prompting them to opt for the easier choice of a resale property ready to move into. The state of the overall market is healthy thanks to a revival of the domestic market and strong demand from especially Scandinavian, Belgian and French buyers, but resales are dominating.

THERE are concerns that the growth of chain restaurants and franchises is altering the face of Valencia City, with one renowned local chef describing it as “starting to resemble Disneyland”. traditional businesses and doing little for the look of Valencia as the primary colours so favoured by the fast food chains detract from the city skyline. The rate of growth of the price of rented housing softened in Spain in 2018 and ended the year with an increase of 9.3%, leaving the average rental price per square metre at 10.60 euro per month, which is 98 cents per square foot per month. This rate of growth is low compared with the 18% that it grew in 2017. During the final quarter of the last year, the rate of increase has slowed, as prices fell by 0.6%. Fernando Encinar, head of research at property portal idealista said:- ”The numbers prove there is no rental price bubble. And if there

Death tax Sabadell moving abolished out of property

market

by Matthew Richards

OTHER regions will be looking on after the new centre-right coalition in Andalusia, Spain’s most populous region, took the decision to virtually abolish inheritance taxes. Commonly referred to as “death tax” the levy often applies to property rather than any other part of the deceased’s estate, sometimes resulting in beneficiaries resorting to having to sell their land or housing.

by Simon Russell

A tiny percentage of estates - estimated at 0.01% - will be liable, meaning in practice only the estates of the extremely wealthy will be paying any tax after their death and even then at reduced amounts. There has been a long-running campaign in Andalusia to abolish inheritance tax, which is seen by many as penalising the middle classes and their families.

BANCO Sabadell is selling off the last of its Solvia brand, along with land and properties owned by the group. Solvia Desarrollos Inmobilarios, to give it its full name, is the real estate arm of the Catalan banking giant and 80% of it was sold off last year. A lot of the properties it marketed were ones that had come into the banks’ ownership through defaults on loans and mortgages. Solvia previously had assets of 25,000 million Euros and employed 700 people across Spain.

I gave myself a chuckle over the weekend when I saw a Sunday Times article outlining contingency plans to ship the Queen and other senior royals out of London should riots hit the streets over a no-deal Brexit. There´s absolutely nothing new in this, as there have been plans in place for decades should nuclear bombs start cascading down on the UK, and not surprisingly the Brexit story has been denied by official sources. Well, they would say that, wouldn´t they? Originally, the Cold War plans were called “Operation Candid,” and involved the Queen being evacuated via the royal yacht Britannia in case of a Soviet attack.

As that ship was decommissioned in 1997, the strategy has since changed. The Sunday Times reports that, should there be violent crowds following a no-deal exit, the Queen and the Duke “would be moved out of London to a secret location,” though they did not disclose where. 2019 Kia E-Niro Kia hopes it will put to rest the doubts of electric car sceptics – namely price, performance and range – more convincingly than any car since parent company Hyundai launched the mechanically similar Kona Electric in 2018. While the pair are closely related in terms of platform and powertrain, the Kia wraps its clever technology in a more conventionally-styled and more practical package. The all electric E-Niro looks very similar to its hybrid and plugin hybrid siblings, albeit with some subtle design changes. The new 17-inch alloy wheels, fared-in grille and a sleeker front bumper. The rear features revised trim to match that at the front, too, helping contribute to a more aerodynamically efficient shape. Inside, it’s much the same as other Niro models. There’s a functional but rather plain looking dashboard, a slick infotainment system and enough room for five adults. Gone is the standard gear selector, with a rotary dial taking its place. This tweak opens up a little extra storage space.

What to watch out for at the Geneva Motor Show The 2019 Geneva motor show, traditionally one of the highlights of the motoring calendar, is shaping up nicely with 150 automotive debuts promised. Officially called the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), the Swiss show is traditionally held on neutral ground at the Palexpo Arena next to Geneva airport. It is an ideal place to stop for petrolheads who may be decamping to the Alps for a spot of spring skiing. It’s also ideal for a day trip from the UK, with the show halls just 10 minutes from the airport. Quesada. Over 800 euros was bagged for the AECC, and a cheque worth two thousand euros accumulated through recent fun-raisers was presented to Maria Wilson of the Maria and the Pink Ladies

group, who are well-known as AECC fund-raisers. For more details on future events or to register your own fund-raising event, go to the Facebook page ‘Life’s Too Short - raising funds for cancer.’

BEST FOOT FORWARD by Alex Trelinski San Blas “en route”.

THERE WAS plenty of walking in Santiago de la Ribera in the San Javier municipality on Sunday, with the annual Romeria de San Blas. The event takes place every February 3rd, with

the origins dating back to the 16th century when the Trinitarian monks brought their devotion to San Blas and the celebration of his feast day to the San Javier area. Thousands of people

accompanied the statue of San Blas carried through the streets on a two hour walk from the Santiago Apostel church through to the San Blas hermitage(religious retreat).

hundreds of people going there every week. Three members of the bowls club and five bar staff members will be trained to use the life-saving machine so that vital first hand can be given within seconds to anyone suffering a heart problem. The charity has spent more than 10,000 euros to provide defibrillators for Orihuela Costa police cars and an ambulance. This is in addition to

spending more than 30,000 euros in providing a dedicated ambulance which will be operated by the Cruz Roja. At the volunteers’ meeting, members were asked for ideas for future projects to

support to provide facilities for local residents, and if any Weekender reader has an idea for a worthwhile project, just drop into the HAH charity’ shops either at Cabo Roig or Playa Flamenca.

The

MARKET ROW Postbag

STRONG WINDS peppered Orihuela City´s Medieval Market last weekend, which is one of the largest events of its kind in Spain, with event organisers saying that the number of people turning out for the festivities was down due to the weather and the local council. 260 stalls were lined up across three parts of the city, which also saw Orihuela sign a twinning agreement with the Mexican city of Zacatecas. Meanwhile, the company organising events at the market, Rivendal Mercados Tematicos, has slammed Orihuela council over the

late awarding of a contract which they say prohibited them from putting together the normal range of live entertainment. Rivendal spokesman Pablo Llorente claimed that attendances were down on last year because of the winds, and also blamed the council for late advertising and a lack of attention to stall-holders and event participants. Fiestas councillor Mariola Rocamora dismissed the accusations saying that Rivendal were aware of the situation and their obligations when they signed the contract for the event.

Wasn´t your front page of last week with “Healthcare Scare” just that, namely a scare to cause a bit of a sensation? We have enough concerns about Brexit disinformation, without seeing a report that retirees in Spain could lose healthcare coverage, whilst the signals from the Spanish government tell a different story. Derek Brice, Javea. ED:- Two facts were presented on our front page last week. Firstly, that the UK government had published an official document stating that British retirees in the EU who had filled in the S1 form transferring health entitlements to where they were living “could” lose that right in the case of a no-deal Brexit at the end of March.

PASEO BOOST A LONG-AWAITED major overhaul of Torrevieja´s Paseo Maritimo between Punta Margalla and La Avenida de Habeneras started this week, at a cost of a million euros. The project is being funded jointly between Torrevieja Council and

the Alicante Provincial Council, with everything set to be finished by the end of June in time for the summer season. New pavements and lighting feature in the project, along with the creation of green spaces,

ROBBERS CAUGHT TWO MEN who robbed four petrol stations in the Mar Menor area in December are now behind bars. The hooded robbers, aged 39 and 26, threatened violence at their targets in San Javier, Cartagena,

gazebos, rest areas, play areas, and even exercise machines. Fences started to be put up around the area this week, with the priority to finish off any work close to restaurants and catering outlets before Easter week. Officials said that the

aim of the revamp was to provide a more pleasant experience for pedestrians and a better image of the area for tourists visiting Torrevieja. The original project had been proposed as long ago as 2013, and firm proposals and costings appeared in January 2016.

OUTDOOR EXERCISE SAN PEDRO del Pinatar´s La Avenida del Puerto has a new area for people to do some exercise, should they wish to! The new “Sports Boulevard” is in effect an outdoor gymnasium, with bars, rings, benches, climbing frames and other equipment for a full round of

circuit training. Detailed guides on how to use all the gear are pinned up, as well as QR codes for mobile phone users to access demonstration videos. San Pedro mayor, Visitación Martínez, opened the new facility last Saturday, and even gave some of the equipment a go herself.

Old MAN´S RAGE AN 85-YEAR-old Spanish man man is behind bars after brutally assaulting his 78-yearold wife in Torrevieja last Saturday afternoon. She was taken to Torrevieja Hospital in a serious condition after the attack in their Residencial Pueblo Centro home, with the man telling the Guardia Civil that he did not regret what he did, and that he wanted to kill her. The assailant used a variety of weapons for the vicious attack, including a

hammer and axe, and then threw his wife down the stairs. The Guardia Civil were called shortly after 2.00 pm when neighbours heard screams coming from the property. The victim is progressing well in Torrevieja Hospital, despite the severity of her injuries, after initially being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, whilst her husband is in jail, with bail being declined after his court appearance.

Off to prison for the octogenerian.

Secondly, we made it abundantly clear that the Spanish government, in stark contrast to other EU countries, wants to make sure that British retirees will be fine if things go pearshaped, and we repeated their intention to pass a Royal Decree guaranteeing expat rights this month.

I thought I´d write to tip-off your readers that bogus electricity men seem to be around our area, looking to get into homes. A scruffy looking pair came to my gate last week, saying that they wanted to read my meter, and that they could offer advice on cutting my electric bills. I politely told them to go away in the total knowledge that they were con artists, since my meter was on the outside wall, just two feet away from them! Jane Stephens, Torrevieja.

Pets that prove imperfection is perfect

ARC - PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES JERRY

Despite the very harsh world that we live in, it is heartwarming to find people who choose to look beyond the imperfections. People who choose to see the beauty of a heart or the strength of a soul, instead of focusing on unattractive physical attributes that are just the surface. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these pets prove that every imperfection is actually perfect if you look it from the right perspective. There’s for example Venus the chimera cat (above right), whose two sided face is actually beautiful and unique to see, and there are pets like the German Shepherd (right) who, despite being born without his front legs, has been a fighter and

6 months old brother of Daisy. Neutered. Very playful & lively little boy. Needs his own family.

Who’s been sleeping in my bed?

Taylor Swift had not actually moved into the house when the burglar broke in.

A man who took a nap in Taylor Swift’s bed has been sentenced to six months in jail. Roger Alvarado, 22, from Homestead, Florida, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to criminal contempt and attempted burglary according to a report in the Page Six Publication. Alvarado is believed to have used a ladder to climb through the window of the singer’s home before she had moved in. A neighbour is then

believed to have reported the incident on April 20 to police, who found Mr Alvarado in Swift’s bed after using her shower. Apparently, Alvarado, who has nearly finished his jail stint, plans to return to Florida to serve five years’ probation and complete a mental health programme. There was no comment from Ms Swift’s camp who couldn’t confirm whether the star decided to buy a new bedcover, or just keep the old one and ‘Shake it off!’

With Red Nose day just over a month away, it already appears that most viewers highlight of the night is sure to be a reunion of the cast from Four Weddings and a Funeral, twenty five years after the original movie stole everyone’s heart. Writer Richard Curtis has got the gang back together, along with director Mike Newell, for a special Red Nose Day sequel to the classic romcom. The 12 minute film comes after the success of the Love Actually short sequel made for Comic Relief in 2017 and reunites most of the original cast members.

Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell are back as Charles and Carrie and Fiona, played by Kristen Scott Thomas, all feature in the updated cast photo as is John Hannah as Matthew, Sophie Thompson (Lydia) and David Haig (Bernard). James Fleet is bringing Tom back to the fold, while Duckface, Henrietta, will be played once more by Anna Chancellor and finally, Rowan Atkinson is back as hapless priest Father Gerald. It’s a shame that Simon Cowell, won’t be around to play Gareth, but as he featured as the ‘funeral’ part of the film’s title, it would be a little hard to recreate.

Atlanta rapper is a Brit

American rapper, Savage 21, who has hit the top of both the Billboard Top 100 single and album charts in recent years, has hidden his British nationality from his fans and is about to be deported back to blighty. Real name, She’yaa Bin AbrahamJoseph, the 26 year old rapper has always claimed to have been born and bred in Atlanta, Georgia. However, when he was arrested last Sunday on charges of outstaying his US visa by thirteen years, Savage had to admit he was actually born in Plaistow, London and moved to America when he was seven years old. Since his arrest, confusion has surrounded the singer’s legitimate US status, until his lawyers released a statement a couple of days ago, which read, ‘Mr. Abraham-Joseph, like almost two million of his immigrant child peers, was left without immigration status as a young child with no way to fix his immigration status. These “Dreamers” come from all walks of life and every ethnicity. Mr. Abraham-Joseph has no criminal

convictions or charges under state or federal law and is free to seek relief from removal in immigration court. ICE provided incorrect information to the press when it claimed he had a criminal conviction. Mr. Abraham-Joseph has three US Citizen children, a lawful permanent resident mother and four siblings that are either US Citizens or lawful permanent residents. He has exceptionally strong ties in the United States, having lived here since he was in the first grade. Because of his length of residence in the United States and his immediate relatives, Mr. Abraham-Joseph is eligible to seek Cancellation of Removal from an Immigration Judge.’ Although he finds himself in the embarrassing position of denying his roots, it does seem that the rapper, who’s single ‘Rockstar’ with Post Malone and Album, I Am>I Was, both hit number one in the US actually is more at home over there and should be allowed to stay, though quite why anyone would want to live in ‘Trump’ton is beyond me.

Savage 21 has always claimed to be born in Atlanta, but actually moved from Britain aged seven.

Drop Quotes

Tarus

Source: Ann Landers

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

as international competitors, across a variety of age categories. 250 volunteers and 25 medics will man the route, which is the same one that has been used in the last few years.

Geraint Thomas will miss May’s Giro d’Italia to be “in the best shape possible” for July’s Tour de France. Thomas began his 2019 season in the five-stage Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana which started with a time trial in Orihuela on Wednesday, and finishes in Valencia City this Sunday. The news about him giving Italy A miss came at a presentation evening at Orihuela´s Circo Teatro ahead of the Valencian race, where the Welshman was on stage with his Team Sky colleagues. Last year Thomas became the third Briton to win the Tour, following four victories by Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins’ 2012 win. “The Giro feels like unfinished business and I wanted to think about that,” said Thomas, who crashed while in second place at the 2017 race. “Maybe I’ll race it next year but this year has always been about the Tour.”

Las Ramblas Golf Society ‘Evening all’ and welcome to this week’s crime scene investigation. ‘Twelve angry men’ (well plus a couple of ladies but that didn’t work so well) took to pounding the beat on Monday with an ‘elementary’ 3-2-1 dusty bin. ‘Briefly’ the winning squad, with 76 points, were John Shervell (doing a great artist’s impression) together with Hendrick (Van der Valk) Oldenziel and undercover, wearing his plain clothes, Mike Chapman. They were ably assisted by the fictional Albert (Pierrepoint?).

After a great show of numbers on Tuesday, when we said a fond farewell to our good friend Brian Staines, it was back on patrol on Wednesday with the first (of 6) eclectic Stablefords. Two ‘Joker’ holes were chosen by each player where the points scored were doubled. The ‘charge sheet’ showed Lindsay (Taggart) Forbes come out top with 40 points closely pursued by Nora Betts and Mike Mahony. Mike was also one of only two people (the other being Andy McDonald) to steal a ‘2’ on the day, but as he doesn’t

In the South Alicante Winter League Quesada Pearls travelled to San Miguel to play the Alsations this week. After a very competitive and close match, the Pearls won on 3 rinks, lost one and drew one. So they won overall 9 - 3 points with the shots 91-88. This means they’ve held on to their 4th place in the league just 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile, Quesada Diamonds entertained San Miguel Beagles at home. Good mornings bowling with some really close scores, 3 rinks were won on the last end, against a very strong San Miguel side. Despite some close games, the Diamonds only won on one rink so the result was a win for San Miguel 10-2. Reflecting the tight match, the overall shots were close at 101-96. The Rubies had a very

On 32 minutes, Monte had a clear penalty appeal of their own mysteriously turned down, most of the crowd saw the blatant push in the back, but not the man in the middle apparently. Monte having no luck yet again in that department. Monte continued to play their part, in a decent, lively game that neither side could get a grip of. Carlos Lorente in particular was giving Torrellano a torrid time with his direct, aggressive running. With no further action, the half came to a close. Half Time: AC Torrellano

1 – 0 CD Montesinos From the restart, Monte were straight out of the blocks when in the first minute, Carlos Lorente’s tricky play on the left resulted in a cross into the area, stabbed home by Vaz. The mass of the crowd’s delight was short lived though, as the referee managed to conjure up an offside decision, despite the fact that Vaz was behind his marker when he scored. Once again, the only luck Monte were having was bad luck. As if to prove the point, five minutes later, Torrellano were awarded a second spot kick when the attacking player

Monte pay the penalty – TWICE! Last Saturday saw CD Montesinos travel towards Alicante airport to face high flying Torrellano. In a game that was defined by the biting, swirling wind, it was the team that could keep the ball down would probably prevail. So it was, that following neat interplay down the wing that Torrellano had an attempt cleared off the line by Fernando in the first minute. An omen of things to come? With both sides, at times, struggling to cope with the conditions, it came as a blow for Monte to fall behind to a penalty on 16 minutes.

successful morning when they played Horadada Falcons winning the match 10-2 and the shots 83-55. On Friday, in the Southern League, Quesada Swans were up against Montemar Torreadors, who were on form and held the Swans at bay winning the match 8-4 and the shots 90-84. Whilst Quesada Swifts hosted Country Bowls in an afternoon match. Both teams were on good form and there were some really tight heads and close finishes. Three rinks were decided by one shot two in Country bowls favour, one won by the Swifts. Overall the points were 8-4 to the Swifts with the shots 97-73. In the Winter league, Quesada played away at Greenlands and won the match 10-2 points, with 9167 shots. Quesada are currently 5th place in the Win-

managed to find the defenders trailing leg in the box. Once again, Carlos in goal was given no chance, the home side were two up. An embellishment their performance barely deserved. Torrellano found themselves reduced to ten on the 60th minute when following a relatively innocuous challenge, the Torrellano player, nothing to do with the initial offence, took it upon himself to launch an abusive tirade against the referee, who, rightly, brandished a straight red. With the game opening up and Monte seeing a lot more

of the ball, it looked that, on the 75th minute, that Vaz must score when beautifully controlling yet another Carlos Lorente cross, he blasted the ball goal-wards only to see it cannon back off the keepers legs. What were we saying about luck? Final substitution on the 83rd minute saw Carlos Lorente replaced by youth player Oscar. Monte continued to push and Torrellano defended and broke forward only occasionally, for Fernando to yet again save an almost certain goal in the final minutes of the game. In the 85th minute, the game took an ugly twist, when following a ball crossed to edge of the Torrellano box

saw Vaz viciously pole-axed by a forearm smash to the face that saw him laid out, clearly in some distress. Once again, the increasingly myopic referee saw nothing worthy of a card, let alone an offence, to disbelief of most of the crowd. Vaz gamely tried to get to his feet, but after a few steps it was clear he couldn’t continue and eventually forlornly left the field. As Monte had used all their subs, both sides were now down to ten. On the final blast, Torrellano ran out winners by two penalties, one of which was dubious to say the least, whereas Monte had nothing to show for their efforts, largely thanks to an indifferent, at best, performance by the referee.

Naughty Sergio

Spain’s Sergio Garcia will face no further punishment following his disqualification from the Saudi International at the weekend for damaging several greens. Players in groups behind the 2017 US Masters winner on Saturday, including Patrick Reed, complained that Garcia had taken his frustration out on several greens on the front nine during Saturday’s round at the Royal Greens course, leaving scuff

marks and at least one large divot-like mark. Garcia, 39, was subject to a fine and potential suspension, but European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said that the “incident is over. We have dealt with it.” Garcia was called out for purposefully driving his clubs into the surface of the green and became the first player disqualified for “serious misconduct” in the his-

tory of the European Tour. “I respect the decision of my disqualification,” a statement from Garcia read. “In frustration, I damaged a couple of greens, for which I apologise for, and I have informed my fellow players it will never happen again.” American Dustin Johnson saw off China’s Li Haotong to win the inaugural event on Sunday, with England’s Tom Lewis a further shot behind in third after a round of 65.

The fear of Max

Benidorm´s shock win Benidorm CD lifted themselves out of the Preferente Group Four relegation zone with an unexpected one-nil win at play-off contenders CFI Alicante. They climb over Aspe who got thrashed five-nil at second-placed Hercules, whilst lacklustre CD Torrevieja are now second-bottom, going down two-nil at home to UD Ilicitana, with Benidorm now

looking to welcome Torrevieja this Sunday. The clash between playoff hopefuls saw in-form Villajoyosa CF win two-one at CD Almoradi, with Villajoyosa joining the Vega Baja side on 40 points, three points behind Hercules. Villajoyosa now have a tricky match against ever-im-

proving UD Horadada, who won one-nil at bottom side Villena, whilst Almoradi make the short journey to Redovan, who lost last Sunday´s derby clash at Rojales-based CD Thader, two-nil. Mid-table Thader travel to UD Ilicitana this weekend, whilst runaway leaders CF Intercity entertain Callosa, after winning four-one at promotion hopefuls Elda.

Max Verstappen is the driver Lewis Hamilton “fears the most”, says Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Horner believes the Dutchman, 21, is ready to take the fight to Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in a title battle, should his Red Bull team

prove competitive in 2019. Verstappen finished fourth in the drivers’ championship in 2019. “He has all the skills to take on Lewis or Sebastian or whoever it is,” said Horner. “I don’t think he lacks

anything to take those guys on and he’s probably the driver they fear the most.” Verstappen, who had an error-strewn start to last season, eventually won two races - in Austria and Mexico - and finished only two points behind thirdplaced Kimi Raikkonen.

nations battle BRING ON FRANCE! AFTER THEIR stunning win in Dublin last Saturday, Saracens lock Nick Isiekwe has been called up to the England Six Nations squad ahead of the clash against France at Twickenham this Sunday(kick-off 4.00 pm, live on ITV) to replace injured teammate Maro Itoje. England have been installed as favourites to win the Six Nations title following their 32-20 victory over reigning champions Ireland, but the

injury to the influencial Itoje will be a cause for concern for head coach Eddie Jones ahead of the French visit. A win on Sunday, as they look to avenge a poor result in Paris last year, will put England right in the driving seat, though Warren Gatland´s Welsh side may have something to say about that. After coming back from the dead

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes this season’s Premier League title race “won’t be decided until the last fixture or two”, after successive draws for leaders Liverpool. City have a big Premier League clash to come at home to Chelsea on Sunday, with Guardiola´s side also having domestic cup and European clashes to look forward to, which means they will at least seven more matches than Klopp´s team. “It takes a big mental effort to be consistent in every single competition,

when you know, if you lose one game, you can lose that competition. It demands a lot of stress,” Guardiola said. “At the same time, when you get to March, the days are longer, the sun is out, the training sessions are in better conditions and you can take a coffee outside.” “If you are still in four competitions it is an extra plus because you realise you can do something special.” “But, right now, we are not in that position.”

in the second half in Paris a week ago, Wales are odds-on to make it two wins out of two, when they go to lowly Italy tomorrow afternoon(kick-off 5.45 pm, live on ITV). All eyes will first be on Murrayfield, where Italy´s conquerors Scotland entertain an Ireland side(kick off 3.15 pm, live on BBC 1) looking to make amends for their shock defeat by England.
