BREATHE MORE EASILY! Brits Get “No-Deal” Assurance THE RIGHTS of British nationals living legally in Spain are to be guaranteed in the case of a “no-deal” Brexit, thanks to a Royal Decree which is set to be approved by the Spanish cabinet today. The formal announcement was made by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday, who said that he hoped that the UK government would offer the same deal to Spaniards in Britain if the country crashes out of the EU with no agreement. The Spanish government promised a “no-deal” contingency package to reassure British residents back in December, with Greece last week passing a law to guarantee UK nationals their rights. The measures in the Royal Decree cover a wide range of issues including trade, legal

and crime- fighting cooperation. “The aim is to preserve the rights of Spanish and British citizens, as well as keeping a normal flow of trade and safeguarding Spanish economic interests,” said Sanchez in a speech to Spain´s parliament. “My main priority is to guarantee that the UK’s decision to leave the EU would have the smallest possible impact on citizens and businesses,” he added. Sanchez also referred to Theresa May promising a parliamentary vote on extending the Article 50 deadline if her deal is voted down. “We will not oppose a UK delay”, said Sanchez, “but prolonging uncertainty by just delaying and not coming up with an alternative is not desirable”.

Why is Spain so different? By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial

According to FCA data, 84% of UK based financial advisors can class themselves as ‘independent’. An independent advisor can search the whole market for the best solution for their clients, rather than being restricted to a small selection of ‘off the shelf’ funds. Being independent is by far the most popular option in the UK, because, on the whole, it is the best for the end client, and surely that should be your advisor’s priority? So why is Spain so different? Many firms in Spain mistakenly refer to themselves as independent but absolutely are not. I can identify in seconds exactly which firm set up a particular portfolio because it will contain the same 3-4 funds they use with every client across their entire group.

In the UK it would, but offshore business is not protected by FCA regulation unless you are specifically choosing FCA regulated funds for your clients, and that is not something these companies are doing. They are choosing the offshore version of these funds because regardless of how much they mention the FCA in their advertising, it simply does not apply to you if you are a Spanish resident having offshore funds recommended – I bet you didn’t know that!? FRIday 1st maRch 2019 COLUMBIAN pop star Shakira, who is the partner of Barcelona football star Gerard Pique, has been given a courts summons over an alleged multi-million euro tax fraud. The 42-year-old singer has been given a June 12th date to go before a judge in Espluegues de Llobregat in Catalunya, as she continues to be investigated over six counts of tax fraud amounting to over 14 million euros. Prosecutors claim she pretended to live abroad and use an existing complex offshore corporate structure to avoid meeting her tax obligations from 2012 to 2014 - despite starting a relationship with Pique in 2011 and moving to Barcelona. Shakira has been unable to stop the case getting to court, despite paying the money prosecutors say she defrauded authorities of at the start of last year. Sources close to Shakira said she was not ‘in debt’ to the Spanish state and she had always fulfilled her tax obligations in accordance with the advice of her financial advisors. by Alex Trelinski

Fresh hope for Kirstys family Almost two years on from the tragic death of Kirsty Maxwell in Benidorm, her family have been given renewed hope in their quest for information on the minutes before she died. The Scottish newlywed, 27, plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Payma Apartments, in the resort’s Levante Beach area,on April 29th 2017. She had flown out to the Spanish resort with a group of friends for a hen party the day before. The room from which she fell, was occupied by

five male friends from Nottingham. Her family have said they want “answers” from the men in the apartment, who have denied any responsibility for Mrs Maxwell’s death. One of the men, Joseph Graham, was arrested on suspicion of homicide but later released without charge. Spanish police believe Mrs Maxwell, from Livingston, jumped from the balcony after a night out with friends. Now, fresh evidence could

suggest she clung onto a 10th floor balcony before she plunged to her death. Her family say expert evidence shows that, in fact, she scaled the barrier then clung to it but lost her grip. That evidence from biomechanics expert Mike Brown is to be viewed by a Spanish judge looking into the case. Mrs Maxwell’s father Brian Curry, recently told BBC Scotland’s The Nine programme he wants “justice for Kirsty”, adding: “We’ve got people on board and the team is getting bigger.

Brit dies in horror crash by Andy Mansell

A fifty eight year old man from the UK was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a stationary vehicle on the Alicante AP70 bypass earlier this week. The accident occurred at around 05.30h last Tuesday, when the unnamed driver failed to see a maintenance lorry standing in the left hand lane of the dual carriageway, close to the San Juan/ Mutxamel tunnel, on the outskirts of the city. Although signage, warning about the closure of the left hand lane were in place, the man, who was driving a Ford Focus, failed to see them and ploughed into the stationary maintenance vehicle at speed. Guardia Civil Traffic officers, plus tenders from the nearby San Vicente Fire Station and two ambulances, arrived at the scene of the accident within a few minutes. Fire fighters using cutting equipment were able to free the body of the British man from his car, but he failed to survive the impact of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, by paramedics from the SAMU response vehicle. The driver of the maintenance truck, received slight injuries from the impact of the crash and was taken by ambulance for treatment at a nearby hospital.

Guardia killer jailed by Alex Trelinski

THE Spanish Supreme Court heard this week how a Guardia Civil officer brutally killed a Moroccan man after suffering a “brief psychotic disorder”. Angel Luis Viana was driving his private car on the A-3 motorway, carrying a handgun and with a machete strapped to his back. He came across Younes Slinanni, a 39 year old Moroccan, and it would seem for no reason other than his nationality suspected him of being a terrorist. He drew his weapon and fired two shots to get Mr Slinanni to stop, which he refused to do. Viana then rammed the car and when the victim

tried to escape on foot he was shot 11 times in the leg and back. The victim was then approached and a final fatal shot was shot made to his head.

The events happened in 2016 and the judge reduced the initial sentence of 16 years to 14 after the latest hearing. They heard how the defendant

genuinely believed he was stopping a terrorist due to his fragile mental state but also heard how his actions had been “inhuman and unnecessary”. They

also listened to how his mental condition was caused by a mixture of natural personality traits combined with excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol.

Black widow trial continues

THE trial of a woman and her carer, accused of murdering her husband of only 15 days in an Alicante car park, has continued this week. The case hit national headlines last year when an off duty police officer intervened after hearing screams. He arrived in time to witness the man being stabbed by the defendants; the victim later died of his wounds.

by Simon Russell

Named by the press as Conchi, the female defendant has also been dubbed “the black widow” as this is the second husband of hers who has had a violent death. Her defence team have been accused of stalling by mounting unlikely defences, including accusing the dead man’s estranged son of the killing

although there is no evidence putting him at the scene. At the time she blamed “black people” for the murder although the police officer and other witnesses had seen no-one else at the time and the accused had a knife and bloodstained clothing. A major development is that a psychiatrist has judged Conchi mentally fit to stand trial although she does have “some psychological issues”. She has also claimed to be wheelchair bound and unable to carry out the crime but doctors dispute this fact, saying her condition is largely psychological. The trial, in Alicante’s Provincial Court, continues next week.

Conchi previously claimed to be wheelchair bound

Benidorm Hotel in evacuation drama Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation and one for lumbalgia, following the outbreak of a fire in a Benidorm hotel last weekend. More than 240 hotel guests were evacuated from the Hotel Flamingo Beach Resort, in the resort’s Calle Esperanto, when the fire broke out around 01.00h in the morning of last Saturday. At around 03.30h, the firefighters concluded their work, allowing guests housed on the 14th floor downwards to return to their rooms, whilst those in the affected area were given alternative accommodation. Those guests affected by the fire were aged between 51 and 75 years old and were in rooms close to the fire. Four of them were transferred to the ImedLevante Hospital, while the other three were treated at the scene.

BUDGET carrier Ryanair has been fined €3million over its cabin baggage policy. The company was hit by Italy´s antitrust authority in relation to its new cabin baggage rules, introduced late last year. Wizz Air was also hit with a €1million fine. Both airlines allow passengers to bring small bags into the cabin free of

charge, but only if they can be stowed under the seat in front of them. Last August, when Ryanair announced its new cabin bag policy, the Italian anti-trust agency warned the airline and Wizz Air to suspend their policies, claiming that they misled customers. The Italian regulator described hand luggage

as an ‘essential’ item for passengers, adding that its price should be included in the cost of a plane ticket. It also added that the new Ryanair policy could result in unfair commercial practice, as it distorts the final price of the ticket.

Ryanair rejected the warning and brought the new policy into effect in November. The Italian regulator said that most passengers expected to travel with a larger carry-on bag, and that by imposing an extra

payment of between €5 and €25, Ryanair was raising ticket prices in a ‘non-transparent’ manner. The company said:- ‘We will immediately appeal this decision..Our baggage policy is transparent and beneficial to consumers.’

Eagle numbers soaring IT makes a change to come across a positive environmental story, but the comeback of a nearly extinct species of eagle in Spain is good news for once. The imperial eagle is native to Iberia but various factors, hunting by farmers protecting their animals being the main one, meant they had all but disappeared a few years ago. There are

now an estimated 400 pairs across Spain, three times the amount there were in 2000 and at 1950s levels when the decline started. This week an imperial eagle named Cesar was released back in the wild Northwest of Madrid. The young bird had been discovered by hikers after injuring his tail, probably by falling from his nest.

He had been nursed back to health and his reintroduction sees the number of birds in the Madrid region increase from 70 to 71. Although still officially classed as endangered, the eagle population appears to be in good shape and anyone caught hunting the birds is now subject to severe sanctions.

KING GETS BURNT Power lines killing by Alex Trelinski

HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to protest against a visit by King Felipe, which saw photos of him being set alight. He visited the Catalan capital to host a dinner for the annual World Mobile Congress meeting of mobile phone bosses at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, with eggs being hurled at the venue by protestors. The king has become a polarizing figure in Catalunya since making a rare political intervention at the height of the secession crisis, when he called pro-independence leaders irresponsible and undemocratic. Most of those leaders are currently on trial in Madrid. Catalan separatists blocked roads in Barcelona, and carried banners with slogans such as “Stop Repression” and “Rotten Bourbons”, referring to Spain’s royal house.

Shock rhino death at Benidorm Zoo

Ill wind remembered

THIS week marked the 30th anniversary of one of Valencia’s biggest natural tragedies, hurricane force winds that killed six people and caused billions of euros worth of damage to the city. There are similarities to the 1987 UK hurricane in that the forecasters failed to see it coming and that it impacted on an area that is

not used to extremely strong winds. The 117 kmph (72 mph) winds blew in on the afternoon of 25 February, reaching 139 kmph at the airport (86 mph). One man was killed in Plaza Ayuntamiento by a flying plank, another died in the Mislata after masonry fell off a building.

In the port area a young couple were killed instantly when a wall crushed them while the fifth death that afternoon was a woman hit by brickwork in the hospital area. The final casualty was a teenager who died on 27 February, 48 hours after being crushed by a wall. In all over a hundred people were injured, many seriously, and the city

The storm was over as quickly as it began but rebuilding work took years and many poorer residents were never able to properly repair their properties, many of which were of poor quality and never designed for 120 kmph winds.

Vets and zoo keepers at Benidorm’s Terra Natura Zoological park, were left shocked and saddened by the sudden death of one of their star attractions last Sunday. Tarun, an eight year old Indian Rhino (Rhinoceros Unicornis) had only arrived at the park last October, from Wroclaw Zoo in Poland. The male rhino, was transferred within the framework of the European Conservation Campaign, with a view to conduct a breeding programme with two females of the species, who have lived at Terra Natura for 15 years. Keepers at the zoo first noticed a change in the behaviour of Tarun, last Friday, when he began to experience difficulties in standing and moving in a normal manner. Vetinary experts were alerted and he was immediately put under constant observation, suspected of experiencing a severe attack of colic, a common complaint in rhinos, from which Tarun had suffered previously

in Poland. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, the rhino’s health deteriorated considerably over the following thirty eight hours and despite constant efforts from the veterinary team to stabilise his condition, Tarun died early on Sunday evening from cardiac arrest. After relevant authorities were informed, tissue samples were taken by vets, who conducted an immediate autopsy on the body and these were sent away for examination to determine the exact cause of death. Terra Natura Benidorm is considered to be a reference point in the conservation of the Indian Rhinoceros as in 2012 it became the first zoo on the Iberian Peninsula to successfully breed one of the species in captivity. A spokesperson for the zoo expressed their deep regret and sadness at the unexpected death of Tarun, which has affected the whole team considerably.

December 1936. Meanwhile staying in the past, it was announced last month that the old facility at San Javier will become the home to one of Spain´s largest collections of vintage aircraft, after having to vacate their current site in the Madrid area. The San Javier terminal building will be refurbished in a major tourism boost to the Mar Menor area, which suffered the closure of the airport in early January.

Love potion triggers bomb scare by Simon Russell

IN a bizarre incident, Alicante police have revealed how a “love spell” caused two hours of train delays and cancellations after a bomb scare. The incident started on the 15th February when someone called the authorities to say they had seen two men of “Arabic appearance” praying then placing a package on the train track at Avenida Carretera de Ocana in Alicante City. After confirming the presence of a black bag the police triggered their terror protocol, stopping rail traffic for 149 minutes. By this time they had determined that the harmless package contained a hollowed out pineapple as well as nails, pins, coffee grounds and peony plant seeds. CCTV and other investigations led them to a 38 year old Spaniard (not of Arabic origin) who confessed to leaving the package as a love spell to reunite him with a former partner who had recently left. He called himself “esoteric” and said he had found the spell on the internet. He was arrested for public disorder relating to the disruption. Five days after the event his ex-partner filed a complaint with the police of alleged gender violence and a restraining order has been issued, so the spell would not appear to be an overly effective one if you go in for that kind of thing.

Doctors valued in Valencia

A recent survey of Valencian residents asking them which job they felt was the most valuable showed doctors topping the list, followed by teachers, lawyers, scientists, police and fire-fighters. Less valued careers included farmers,

waiting staff, labourers, carers, cashiers, caretakers and drivers with road sweepers at the bottom of the list when it comes to status. People they trust the least are politicians followed by bankers.

Robbing on remand

A man who was on humanitarian release from jail due to ill health has been arrested and charged with robbing a bank in Gandia. He entered the bank last Thursday with his face covered by a jacket. He was holding a gun and

demanded €900 from the cashier to leave the bank. The bank worker handed the cash over then contacted the police after the man left the building. Despite the hood he had worn they were able to identify the perpetrator, who was well

known to them. He was soon tracked down and was carrying €550 cash and did not deny his part in the crime. The defendant was previously in jail for two similar robberies but was free on remand due to serious illness.

A woman has been found guilty of trying to smuggle drugs into a Valencian prison as she started her three and a half year prison sentence, also for drug trafficking. The 50 year old was searched as she entered the jail in Castellon when the detection wand used indicated that there were drugs in her groin area, although she denied this. She was placed in a cell so medicals staff could conduct a more through search and

when they returned they found a condom in the toilet with hashish and cocaine. The defendant had been the only person in the cell the whole time and it had been empty beforehand, meaning they could only have come from her. The drugs were worth about €1,000 and may well have fetched more in jail, the court heard. She has been fined and charged with recidivism with an increased sentence looking likely.

Counterfeit crackdown POTENTIALLY dangerous toys and fake clothing were among over a million euros worth of counterfeit goods seized by the Guardia Civil in the region last week. In Crevillent around 1,800 boxes of toys were confiscated that were labelled in Chinese and had not been subject to Spanish safety regulations. The Santa Pola Guardia Civil, who carried out the raid, have opened a prosecution against the shop owners and management. In a second operation a Chinese citizen was stopped at Alicante airport who was carrying 8,600 forged brand logos in her suitcase. The woman had no Spanish

address and was travelling here on a tourist visa. It is unclear where she was planning to go with the forged logos but the authorities started investigating the fact that she has a relative in Elche who is a wholesale retailer of clothing and footwear. The police decided to launch a surveillance operation on these warehouses and, after seeing suspicious behaviour, launched a raid and confiscated 7,344 pairs of counterfeit trainers. In a third raid at Alicante Port an Algerian citizen was arrested for being in possession of a shipping container with over 4.500 items of fake clothing, shoes and accessories. The fashion firm whose brand was used were able to confirm that the items were fakes and they had a value of over a million euros.

Fallas starts with a bang

MANY towns up and down the Valencian Community will have started their Fallas celebrations already, although as usual Valencia had the biggest display. Last Saturday the city set off the tallest mascleta (firework display) ever constructed with 5,000 fireworks combining in a 120 meter tall 50 meter wide structure. This made it 15 times more powerful than the

by Simon Russell

usual Town Hall square displays and the noise could be heard right across the city. In other towns celebrations leading up to the main event on 19 March have been more low key - the fallas queens have been parading in many municipalities while various fund-raising and preliminary events have also been taking place.

The giant mascleta gets underway.

Carnival time ALICANTE City is laying on a full programme of events this Saturday (2 March) to mark Carnestoltes, or the Carnival. The Athens Orchestra, the Hornets group and three DJ’s will be on stage at the Rambla de Mendez Nuñez from 10pm

to 4am. Earlier in the day at 5pm there are children’s events with music, activities, workshops and games at Elche Portal (close to the Rambla). Workshops include costume making and face painting. There are

various activities planned throughout the city, contact the Alicante tourist information office for more information. Most towns across the region will also be celebrating Carnestoltes in some way with Friday being the date for the children’s parade.

Guardia gun thief detained

A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a number of weapons from a Guardia Civil barracks last weekend. Five Beretta pistols and 150 rounds of ammunition were taken from the building in Lachar (Granada) on Saturday night. The barracks are unmanned at night and the theft did not come to light until Sunday lunchtime when the first

by Simon Russell

shift came on duty. CCTV footage showed an image of a suspect and this matched the description of a well known criminal in the area. His house was raided and the pistols and ammunition were discovered; he later confessed he was planning to sell the items on the black market. Initially there were

fears that the operation had been carried out by terrorists but the arrested man has no such links although he does have a long arrest sheet for mainly petty crime. It is believed he planned the theft after learning the barracks were unmanned at night, while the Spanish Guardia Civil Association has blamed lack of resources for allowing the theft to happen.

Murder on the dance floor

A man has been arrested after an assault in an Elche nightclub that was so vicious that the authorities have decided to charge him with attempted murder. Police were called to the disco on Avenida Juan Carlo I at the weekend after being

alerted to the attack. They found a crowd around a badly injured man who had been hit repeatedly with a broken glass, resulting in near fatal neck injuries. The alleged assailant was

arrested and charged and witness statements taken. A medical source said that a further blow to the neck could well have resulted in the victim’s death, although he is expected to recover from his injuries.

What’s in a name?

Send in the clones. Yulia and Yuriy.

A good deed by two men in the Baltic state of Estonia nearly went horribly wrong after they rescued what they thought was a pet dog from a freezing river - only for a vet to later inform them it was actually a wild wolf. Rando Kartsepp and a colleague were working at a dam on the River Parnu when they saw the creature struggling in the bitter icy water. They managed to free the canine and seeing it was alive but unwell bundled it into their car, with it even

sleeping on Mr Kartsepp’s lap during the journey. A veterinarian they drove to sedated and treated the animal, admitting he had suspicions about its true nature which were later confirmed by a hunter who was passing by. One of the rescuers said that the wolf had remained docile although animal experts say it could easily have ripped the men’s throats out, especially after finding itself in a confined and strange place such as a car. “We did think

it was very heavy for a dog,” said Mr Kartsepp. For precautionary reasons the animal was caged and has made a full recovery. The Estonian equivalent of the RSPCA paid for the animal’s treatment and said they were grateful to the brave, some may foolhardy, rescuers, who probably saved the wolf’s life. An animal expert said that low blood pressure caused by the cold would most likely have been the reason the wolf remained docile.

Sex abuse scandal

CLONE candidates and a frontrunner who is a comedian are among the more eye-catching aspects of the Ukrainian elections which take place this month among widespread allegations of corruption. One of the favourites is former PM Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko, famous for her blond braids and antiestablishment stance in the former Soviet state. Next to her on the ballot paper is Yuriy Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko (spot the difference?), largely thought to be placed as a “clone candidate” i.e. to steal votes off Ms Tymoshenko from voters who accidentally, and understandably, tick the wrong box. It costs 2.5 million Ukrainian hryvnias, around $92,000, to enter the election, a big chunk of cash anywhere, certainly in Ukraine. Mr Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko

by Simon Russell

earns about $10,000 a year and is evasive as to where he managed to find the money to stand or why someone with his lack of political experience would want to be PM. Despite the hefty entry fee, there are 44 candidates standing with the favourite being comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Jokes about comedians and politics aside, Mr Zelenskiy is a young comic straight out of the Benny Hill school of laughs, and the way global politics is going at the moment anything is possible it would seem. Other “interesting” candidates include a man standing trial for falsifying a sex scandal on Facebook and a former chief of police currently under house arrest charged with widespread corruption.

mystery billionaire

Cardinal Pell faces the press after his sentence is made public.

THE Catholic Church continues to be rocked by sex scandals after one of their highest ranking members of clergy has been found guilty of serious sexual offences involving underage boys. In a case that has been kept sub judice until now, Cardinal George Pell was found guilty by an Australian jury of engaging in indecent acts, including penetrative sex, with two 13-year-old choirboys in 1996. Pell is the Vatican treasurer, a role that effectively means he is third in the complex hierarchy of the Catholic Church. This is the second trial after a jury failed to reach a verdict last year, with the latest case being held behind closed doors to avoid public reporting influencing any subsequent trial of Pell. The court heard how the Cardinal found the boys drinking communion wine, telling them they would be in trouble if they did not accede to the sex acts. He abused one of the boys again a year later and the youngsters both drifted into trouble

by Matthew Richards

with drugs and alcohol, with one of them dying of an overdose in 2014. The other victim, who cannot be named, has said the abuse has led to “shame, loneliness, depression and struggle.” The irony for many will be that Pell was a hardliner in the church which is trying to drag itself kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Down the years he has fought against contraception, homosexuality, abortion, divorce, equal marriage and many other issues his own Pope is trying to soften the stance of his followers on. On sexual matters, in public statements, it would appear to be something he only approved of between heterosexual married couples, while in private he was abusing children and turning a blind eye to similar abuse under his leadership. He is due to be sentenced this week.

The KC Mart store where the winning ticket was sold.

ONE of the biggest ever lottery wins worldwide remains unclaimed - five months after the $1.5 billion winning numbers were drawn. The mystery winner or winners now only have around a month to claim their prize before forfeiting it and conspiracy theories are rife, especially in the small town of Simpsonville, South Carolina, where the ticket was purchased last October. These include that the winner has died, that they are a criminal on the run, or that the lottery company is operating some form of scam to keep the money. The unclaimed ticket may also affect others financially, not least the ticket vendor, a Mr Patel, who is due

by Simon Russell

a $50,000 windfall under state rules but will receive nothing if no-one comes forward. South Carolina was also due a massive $61 million dollars in additional state taxes, which they admit they had built into their 2019 budget and are now worried about losing. The most likely theories, despite the speculation, are that the ticket has been lost or the winner is putting their affairs in order before coming forward to claim an amount of money that will be life changing whatever their circumstances. Now I think I’ll just go and have another look behind that sofa…

Short term work Pensions spend at record high SPAIN’S treasury spent 9,513 million euros on pensions in February, the highest monthly figure ever. Year on year the figure has gone up by 7.15%, a ten year high. The Ministry of Labour

by Simon Russell

and Social Security say there are two main reasons for the change, the ever increasing amount of pensioners and the recent rises in payments.

The average pension in retirement now stands at €1,131.86, 5.04% higher than February last year. The average “new pension” for people drawing one for the first time is now €1,446.11.

Queues outside the employment offices.

A third of new work contracts signed in January were for less than 15 days with most of these being for less than a week. 90% of the total 1.6 million contracts signed in the month were temporary, increasing fears about the quality

by Simon Russell

of most employment in Spain and meaning many employees are facing an uncertain future from one month to the next. Most of these “new” roles are in the service sector which

is becoming increasingly seasonal according to analysts, with people hired and released at short notice. Despite unions concerns the trend currently is for more not less temporary and “zero hours” type work.

SCARE STORY EXERCISE

ALICANTE-ELCHE airport is likely to see the worst delays for UK air arrivals in Spain in the extreme case of a no-deal Brexit, according to a set of calculations cobbled up by the Consumers Association magazine Which? and given prominent coverage in the British media this week. Their survey suggests that British travellers planning to fly to the airport at El Altet should take food, water, and even nappies to survive prolonged delays, but the idea has been rejected by Spain´s airport operator Aena, which says that the scenario would not happen. Which? made a “paper”

calculation that if Spain´s airports spent only 90 seconds making extra checks on each UK passport, it would take a single passport lane in an EU airport five hours longer to process a Ryanair flight with 189 UK passengers on board. Based on that hypothetical exercise, Alicante-Elche airport is likely to be worst hit if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal, because 43 per cent of its arrivals are from the UK. Even in February, Which? says, the airport processes as many as 10 planes from the UK in a single hour, and in total, 2.9 million British passport holders go through the facility each year.

The Which? analysis of queues and processing time was based on data from the European Tourism Association (ETOA), but the theory of their report will probably not match reality. Aena, the operator at Alicante-Elche, said it did not envisage chaos at Spain´s airports this summer because too much was at stake. It said: “Aena does not consider that the most pessimistic scenario will occur. We believe that once the starting uncertainty is overcome, United Kingdom traffic can continue being strong in both the middle and the long term.”

consultation with the board and shareholders due to the impact on share prices. He was sanctioned and told to watch his step, but this week appears to have violated the agreement by tweeting about increased production rates of the firm’s electric cars without going through the usual channels.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has called for severe sanctions, while Musk, in turn, has called the current system “broken”. Mr Musk’s most notorious tweet actually had nothing to do with business but was when he accused a British cave diver involved in the rescue of a trapped football team in Thailand of being a paedophile.

BIG BRANCH FALLS

Arrival hall at Alicante-Elche.

A VALENCIAN regional organisation says that as of last summer, the number of bank branches in Spain has halved, compared to the pre-recession numbers. The Valencian Institute of Financial Research (IVIE), states in their number count that in 2018, there were 27,320 branches

by Alex Trelinski

across the country, compared to a figure of over 45 thousand before the economic downturn started at the end of the previous decade. The IVIE added that 52.2 per cent of municipalities in the country had no branch

in them at all. Those figures are mirrored locally within the Comunidad Valenciana, with 248 municipalities out of over 500 having no physical banking presence, with the IVIE estimating that 136 thousand people have to travel to use faceto-face services.

Looking for a smoother ride in choppy waters

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management inflation, as interest rates across the EU and the UK look to remain well below inflation for the foreseeable future. So, if you are new to investing or would just like less risk and a smoother ride, there are investments out there that apply smoothing thereby giving you some cushion against volatility. 2019 looks like it will be a testing time for investors, from trade wars to political uncertainty. The European Union (EU) faces a number of challenges, including the ongoing Brexit saga, Germany just escaping recession (for the moment), further tensions with the Italian government, mass social unrest in France (with the potential for contagion), the continued rise of populism, anti-immigration, anti-establishment and separatism movements. A weakening European economy (real GDP decelerated in 2018).

In the US, President Trump will do everything he can to keep the US economy strong because the success of his presidency relies on it. But at least the threat of a trade war with China has rescinded in the last week with Trump delaying tariffs on Chinses goods Ashe feels substantial progress has been made in trade talks. But there is a risk here. America still relies on the rest of the world as much as the rest of the world relies on America – attempting to reset the terms of global trade too hard in America’s favour might derail the economies of other countries. So, what can you do to protect your investments that you already have against the volatility that we are experiencing, well

firstly and most importantly make sure that your investment portfolios are as diversified as possible, across Asset Class, Sector and Country. Don’t be tempted to put all your eggs in one basket. It is not a get rich quick scheme. Balearic Islands by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons

This beautiful, relatively undeveloped island gets its name from being smaller than its closest neighbour, Mallorca. It has a population of around 92.000 persons permanently living there, however, this increases by around 1.4 million visitors each year, who come to take advantage of the vast stretches of white sandy unspoilt beaches as well as

many water sports. Snorkelling and boat trips, fishing expeditions and windsurfing are some of the activities that can be arranged there. In June, the island celebrates its Sant Joan de Ciutadella fiesta, usually on the dates of 23 -25th June. The festival is based on medieval traditions, and also on the date of birth of the Saint, John the Baptist on 24th June. This three-day event is a highlight of the year, attracting many tourists who come to see the display of

wealth and the spectacular sight of the specific breed of horses, indigenous to Menorca. The horses parade through the main streets of this old, cobble-stoned city, which was the original capital of the Island prior to it being named by the British as Mahon. Food and drink on the island are those typical to the Mediterranean way of life, the staples of which being crusty bread served with olive oil and selections of tapas – this being one of the main features of eating (grazing!) on the island. There are many restaurants who specialize in traditional tapas, so make sure you take time to check out all that they have on display before settling down for a delicious taste experience!

You can also arrange wine-tasting and also a visit to a Gin distillery, a throwback to when the British were on the island. Rumour has it that the origins of mayonnaise can also be traced back to the French victory over the British at the Battle of Mahon (Mahon-aise, get it?) when the French chef was challenged to prepare something for the Duke of Richelieu and all he had to hand were some eggs and olive oil. The rest, as they say, is history. The main tourist season runs from April to October, with direct flights operated 3-4 times a week from Alicante. Transfers operate to all hotels on the island and public transport can take you from/to any of the main cities.

PICK UP A PUEBLO!

Buying your own Spanish village, perhaps a forgotten pueblo – once thriving rural communities, now devoid of life, with their stone buildings crumbling, is becoming an interesting proposition for property buyers, and surprisingly not that expensive. It is estimated there are as many as 3,000 of these abandoned pueblos, scattered around Spain, most particularly in Galicia, Castilla y León, Aragón and Asturias. The actress Gwyneth Paltrow shone the spotlight on such unusual investment opportunities when she recommended buying a deserted Galician village as a Christmas present on her website. A Dutch couple took up her suggestion and are in the process of clinching the deal for around €150,000. That’s a bit below the average askingprice for these villages although some have sold for as little as €50,000. Despite the publicity over cut-price pueblos, it should be mentioned that

by Alex Trelinski

shelling out money will only get you the deeds to the properties. Most of these villages are in a state of complete ruin and a minimum price of €500,000 is recommended to make the buildings habitable. Nevertheless, there is considerable interest, with 70 per cent of pueblo clients coming from abroad. British buyers lead the way followed Belgians, French and, of late, an increasing number of investors from Russia and Arab countries, whilst interest from Spaniards is small but growing. It is not easy to secure these purchases since would-be buyers must deal with a number of owners, including some who have left Spain and others who have inherited the property, which is why if you want to go down the buy-pueblo route, you need an expert agency to help you through the process.

Better late than Illegal builders never with new bought to book mortgage law ALICANTE’S Guardia Civil have charged 22 people with offences relating to illegal building across the Alicante region after operations to clamp down on the practice. Seprona agents used a combination of aerial photographs and tips from local residents and issued fines ranging from €300 for minor infringements to half a million for one major

THE Spanish parliament has passed a new mortgage law, although under an EU directive it was supposed to have been introduced before March 2016 and the EU were starting to threaten sanctions. The legislation is by the governments own admission highly complex, and this has been partly their excuse for the delay which goes back to the previous PP administration. It

by Simon Russell

is designed to help and protect the consumer and pushes some of the costs of setting up a mortgage back to the bank, including the notary and taxation on legal documentation. The rule allowing the bank or lender to begin claiming back the debt after only three months has also been scrapped and replaced with a new

system where the there must be 12 defaults or 3% of the capital unpaid, rising to 15 months and 7% in the second half of the mortgage term. Banks will also be obliged to carry out more stringent solvency tests on customers before granting a mortgage, with poor lending decisions being blamed for much of the last financial slump. Banks have until the end of May to bring in the changes.

A Seprona helicopter captures an image of an illegal building in Alicante.

PRICE AND VALUE VARIENTS

In many Spanish home sales, the price does not match the appraised value. When a property is overvalued, it can be both beneficial and problematic for the buyer. This is the main point in a recent survey, which makes the point that price and valuation only coincide in 20 per cent of cases. What is the buyer exposed to in each case and what are the pros and cons? A property appraisal certificate is needed by financial institutions like banks in order to get a mortgage. It´s purpose is to assess the real price of the house and ensure that the conditions of sale are in line with the reality of the property. 3. If the appraised value exceeds the value price, that

by Alex Trelinksi

could be good for the buyer and the bank handing out a mortgage. The buyer can get a higher mortgage to finance the deal, while the bank ensures stable profits for the duration of the loan. 4. If the appraiser values the property below the price agreed in the purchase contract, it can be a problem for the buyer. The bank will lend less money to acquire the property, so you need to have more money saved to make up the difference. There is also the possibility of asking for a review of the appraisal or to get a new valuation. The bottom line is that expert advice and guidance is essential in making sure that you avoid any pitfalls.

Lexus UX 250h Compact premium SUVs like the Volvo XC40, Audi Q3 and BMW X1 are all hugely popular thanks to their combination of style, practicality and affordability. Surprisingly, though - while they are all available with a combination of petrol and diesel engines, there are no hybrid options. That’s likely to change in the near future but, for the time being, Lexus is making its move in a bid to exploit the current antidiesel climate. The new Lexus UX is a small crossover of the same ilk of those cars mentioned above, but with a ‘self-charging’ petrol-electric powertrain. It combines a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor positioned on the front axle. There’s a four-wheel-drive model, badged the E-Four, with an extra electric motor powering the rear, but Lexus is expecting the majority of sales to be front-wheel-drive. The advantages of using a hybrid setup are clear. You don’t need to worry about being snubbed by your neighbours for buying a diesel, while there’s no need to plug it in like the upcoming Volvo XC40 plug-in hybrid. It’s also very efficient. Officially the standard model will return upwards of 49.6mpg depending on spec, and we were seeing around 47.0mpg with little effort during our mountainous test drive in Spain. Unfortunately, facts and figures aside, the Lexus UX is an easy car to pick faults with. The interior is functional rather than a technofest and it has too many scratchy plastics for a car intending to take on the premium cars of this world. There are

buttons everywhere and the infotainment is all a bit Windows 1995. You can’t even mirror your phone’s screen using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto - a bugbear of ours. All models come with Lexus Drive Mode Select. If there’s ever a car that proves driving modes are pointless, this is it. You’ll be best to keep in ‘Normal’ mode most of

the time - Eco restricts performance in an irritating manner, while Sport makes the steering pointlessly heavy. Opt for the Adaptive Variable Suspension and you get a total of five drive modes, with a Sport S+ function firming up the dampers for a sportier ride. We haven’t tried it, but the standard car rides very well. Boot space and cluttered dashboard aside,

the interior is pretty good, too. The seats are very comfortable, with a high-up seating position even in their lowest setting. Adults in the rear will have a lot of headroom, although legroom is a bit on the tight side. Dropping the rear seats, meanwhile, is easy - and they fold properly flat, giving plenty of space for bulky items as long as you don’t mind leaving the kids at home.

Renault Celebrates Seat Minimo Renault has topped the 200,000 mark for sales of electric vehicles in Europe. At the same time, it has crossed a symbolic milestone in France with 100,000 vehicles registered. This double achievement underlines Renault’s position as leader in the European electric vehicle market, with steady growth in sales. Almost one electric vehicle in every three sold in Europe is a Renault A pioneer in electric vehicles with a range launched in 2011, Renault continues to lead the European electric vehicle market for the fourth consecutive year. Almost one electric vehicle in every three on European roads is a

Renault. In 2018, Renault sales of electric vehicles in Europe surged by 36%, accelerating strongly in the second half-year to + 62%. In France, Renault holds a 56.8% share of the electric vehicle market, in both passenger cars and LCVs. “Today, we are proud to say that over 200,000 customers in Europe have chosen Renault to make electric driving part of their everyday lives! And of course this is just a step on a far longer journey. Our clearly stated aim for the past ten years has been to make electric mobility available to everybody. Groupe Renault’s ambition is for electric vehicles to account for 10% of sales by 2022. To achieve this, it will build on the eight electric vehicles that

will make up the range by this date,” says Gilles Normand, Senior Vice President, Electric Vehicles, Group Renault. A complete, versatile range The reasons for this success? The most complete, versatile electric range on the market, made up of ZOE, Kangoo Z.E., Master Z.E. and the Twizy quadricycle. The range receives continuous upgrades with, for example, increased range, more powerful motors or faster charging. It is built around two best-sellers: the city car ZOE and the Kangoo Z.E. van. The Renault ZOE remains the undisputed standard-setter on the market with 40,000 registrations last year, of which 18,000 in France. Building on six years of market success, it continues to appeal to buyers with an attractive design and a real range of 186 miles*. Kangoo Z.E. is Europe’s undisputed leader in electric LCV sales, with market share of 51.5% in 2018

SEAT is taking the wraps off its vision of the future of urban mobility at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, with the unveiling of its concept car, Minimó. The all-electric quadricycle has been developed to help meet the challenges of city driving, such as emissions laws regulating vehicles entering urban areas, the growing problem of traffic jams and the lack of parking spaces. The Minimó brings together the benefits of the smaller dimensions of a motorcycle with the safety and comfort of a larger passenger vehicle, minimising the many

frustrations of travelling around our cities. “The industry is adapting to changes in the way customers view personal transport. With the Minimó, the vision of our first product designed to purpose, SEAT is addressing those challenges, combining autonomous driving technologies with electric powertrain systems to create the future of urbanmobility” said Luca De Meo, President of SEAT. The vehicle is designed to be narrow and agile making it easier to navigate around urban areas, but is enclosed to increase both safety and its ability to serve a wider number of drivers and their

needs. An all-electric powertrain with zero emissions means that entering city centres with even the most stringent emissions legislation is no problem. Its ability to swap battery packs to quickly and efficiently refuel the vehicle, significantly reduces the charging time for private customers as well as operation costs of an urban electric carsharing service. The Minimó concept car will make its world debut at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and will also be shown at Geneva International Motor Show in March.

Cabo Roig Party planned The

g a b t s o P for St Patrick’s Day

Summer is on its way, but in Cabo Roig, the first is not the swallows returning from their winter migration but the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. In addition to the parade this year there will be a craft market in the car park beside the Medical Centre on both Saturday and Sunday, a Wild West Show across at The Depot as well as FREE face painting dotted up and down the strip. Those who arrive early will probably get parked around La Regia Park opposite El Gato, on the side streets of La Regia, and in old Cabo Roig near the

beaches, but don’t leave it too late as the spaces will be filled up very quickly. Remember, on Saint Patrick’s Day everybody is Irish, no matter where you are from. The festivities will begin in earnest at 1 pm with a big shoot out at the Depot although many people will forgo the gunfight to get themselves seated by 2 pm on the terraces of the bars and restaurants around the two-kilometre parade route. The best spots are usually found at the medical centre end of the “Strip”. As Saint Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year there will be FREE face

The Play That Goes Wrong Winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, “The Play That Goes Wrong” is a celebration of the best of live theatre… and the worst. The CornleyPolytechnic Drama Society, at last, have the cash to stage a fully cast 1920’s who-dunit in their production of “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” So what could possibly go wrong? The set is falling apart! The actors can’t remember their lines! The leading lady gets knocked out and the murder victim……. Well, he can’t play dead! As the night wears on, this haphazard group of misfit actors struggle against a series of endless pitfalls to hilarious ends! Make sure you bring tissues – you will be crying with laughter from beginning to end! Dates: 28th, 29th& 30th March, 2019 Telephone No: 699 98 27 26 Email: tickets.acts@gmail. com

painting for children aged between 0 and 100. You can have shamrocks or tricolours painted on your face or your forehead from 1 pm in three different locations, between Milo’s and Peter Pan’s, near Banco Sabadell and over the road at the Depot. It is reported that Anna and Elsa from Frozen will be doing some of the face painting in person. This Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is the 9th to be held in Cabo Roig and it has become world famous, so famous in fact that it is the best in Spain and mainland Europe and the 9th best in the world according to Mister Google. 2019’s parade will be bigger and more spectacular than ever before. We may even get moved up to 8th place after this year’s parade as there will be more dancers, more floats, more activities, more cartoon characters, more bands and much more fun. Some think that the parade “Just Happens,” but it doesn’t, local businesses contribute their time, talents, efforts and 15,000€ to make this fun event happen every

year. They run fundraising events all year round to build up the kitty so as this happy day can be a reality for the very nearly 10,000 spectators that attend the event. Probably the most vital person in running a successful Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Cabo Roig is Sofia Alvarez, councillor for Tourism and also foreign residents in the Orihuela town hall. Each year she organizes the necessary permissions, police assistance, barriers, advertising, some performers, posters, scarfs, stage, seating etc. Without her help and support the Parade just wouldn’t happen. This year’s Grand Marshall is world-famous Irish Boxer and film star, Big Joe Egan, originally from Ringsend in Dublin. Once called ‘the world’s hardest man’ by Joe Frazier a full bio on Joe will be printed in a special newspaper for Saint Patrick’s Day and the Irish Pub and Grub Crawl. This free newspaper will be available in all the best places from 4th March.

How right Doris Bates was in your letters section last week to talk about motorists flouting speed limits and making life hard for those of us who want to observe the law. On Avenida Noruega in Gran Alacant , which has a 50 km limit and 30 km where the crossings are , the irresponsible drivers try to push you down the road or even overtake on the white line which is obviously illegal , but maybe they don’t see it as they are on the phone? I notice that many who commit these offences are the mothers who have just dropped their kids off at school. They would be the first to complain if some speeding driver knocked one of the children over, but they don’t seem to be policed enough to care! On one occasion, I was even overtaken as i turned right using the indicator to show my intention to do so. An idiot overtook me as i turned right and he also was turning right and wanted to get in front of me after the turn. I did follow him and he stopped and then decided to wave his fists and insinuated that I was a doddering old driver, but at least we know the law and abide by it and use our turn signals. Have some drivers forgotten what they learnt when at driving school? .No, they just can’t be bothered and as Doris wrote, there is nobody to stop these idiots to fine them, and perhaps send them for another driving test. Bill Winterburn, Gran Alacant.

I´m totally against any form of Brexit and would welcome a second referendum to kill it once and for all. Nevertheless there should be some exercise in democracy and for Labour politicians(who suddenly got behind a second vote because of people quitting their party) to suggest that there should be nothing on a ballot paper over leaving the EU without a deal is patently ridiculous. There should be fair play for all, regardless of what their views are, with common sense prevailing. Marian Jones, Benidorm

The Showman Must Go On

Best news of the week for fans of The Greatest Showman, came from leading man, Hugh Jackman, who confirmed that there will definitely be a sequel to the blockbuster musical. In London, to support Jackman’s opening performance at last week’s Brit Awards, director of the movie, Michael Gracey told The Sun: “When a movie becomes as big a

success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel. “So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now.” Critics were wowed by Jackman’s Brit performance, which bodes well for the fifty year old Australian, as he embarks on a huge world tour with big band and dancers performing hits from the movie and others he’s starred in,

Les Miserables and The Boy From Oz. It is not yet known if the new film will follow on from the first or be a prequel and although Jackman is expected to lead the cast, the involvement of his co-stars Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Keala Settle is unclear. Hmmmm….. There could still be a role for me as the Bearded Lady.

Tropicana Tony passes on

Wham’s Club Tropicana video, in which Tony plays a bartender, became an unlikely advert for the hotel

The word legend is bandied around at will, but ask anyone who knows the island of Ibiza at all well to make a list of local ‘White Island’ legends and the name Tony Pike, who died last week at the ripe old age of 85, would appear near the top. The hotelier who epitomised the hedonism of the holiday clubbing island and claimed to have bedded over 3000 women and men over the years, was described by the Guardian last year as the “ringmaster for 30 years of celebrity debauchery”. Pike founded the Pikes Hotel on the outskirts of San Antonio in 1978 and it went on to became a much-mythologised venue for raucous parties and a favourite hangout for celebrities. The hotel secured its reputation as the centre of the Ibiza party scene when it featured in a video of the 1983 Wham! hit Club Tropicana. A bare-chested Pike appears at the start of the video in a straw hat welcoming guests to the pool

side of his establishment before George Michael sings about a place where you can “brush shoulders with the stars”. The stars definitely went on to brush shoulders with Tony, including Freddie Mercury, who had his own bedroom at Pikes and held his infamous 41st birthday party at the hotel. Over 700 guests including Bon Jovi, Tony Curtis, Naomi Campbell, Spandau Ballet and Boy George, who nicknamed Tony “the real Hugh Hefner”, drank 350 bottles of champagne, ate a cake in the shape of Barcelona’s SagradaFamilia Cathedral, and watched a firework display that could be seen from neighbouring Majorca. Even though he sold the hotel in 2008, Tony kept a room at Pikes and could often be seen propping up the bar, right up to his death last week. A true testament to Pike, came from Iconic Ibiza DJ, Fatboy Slim, who tweeted that the legend was “larger than life and twice as entertaining”.

Big winners were Olivia Colman, who took the Best Actress award for The Favourite, ahead of poor Glenn Close, who now officially becomes, the Academy’s most-nominated winless actress. Asked where she would put her Oscar, Brit actress Colman told reporters, “In bed with me. Between me and my husband.” She then stage-whispered: “He doesn’t know yet. The motivation said to me, I could do this.” The only big shock of the night, came when Julia Roberts announced that the Best Movie award was to go to Green Book, a road movie, featuring an antagonistic white man and his black employer, whose take on race relations seems more suited to its 60s setting than 2019. Spike Lee,who famously didn’t get a best-picture nomination for his 1989 film “Do the Right Thing;” when the trophy that year went to “Driving Miss Daisy.”, was the most outspoken critic of the Academy’s decision. “The ref made a bad call,” said the director, who was also nominated in the category for his movie ‘BlackkKlansman’, before uttering the best line of the night, “I’m snake-bit. Every time someone’s driving somebody ….. I lose.” Luckily he did win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay …… Phew!!

Fleabag

Season 1 Episode 1 of 6 BBC2 10:00pm Sun 3rd March

Season 2, Episode 1 of 6 BBC1 11:35pm Mon 4th March

NEW SERIES: Five pairs of travellers - Sue and Clare, Felix and Josh, Natalie and Shameema, Jinda and Bindu, and Darron and Alex - set off from Greenwich, southeast London, passing through five checkpoints to reach their final destination of Singapore - without getting on a plane or using mobile phones or credit cards. Their first port of call is the ancient Greek city of Delphi. The stakes are high - everyone wants to be first to the finish line to win the cash prize

NEW SERIES: Return of the comedy written by and starring Phoebe WallerBridge, following a woman wrestling with the demands of modern living. Fleabag attends an uncomfortable family dinner alongside her sister Claire and brother-inlaw Martin, to celebrate her godmother and father’s engagement, where she finds herself intrigued by a priest. The evening comes to a tempestuous end however, when an unexpected attack brings old tensions bubbling to the surface. With Bill Paterson, Olivia Colman and Andrew Scott

Drop Quotes Source: George Eliot

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Preferente News

There was little movement at the top of Preferente Group Four last weekend as leaders CF Intercity inflicted a three-one defeat on playoff candidates CFI Alicante, whilst Hercules B stayed in second place, courtesy of a two-one victory over Callosa Deportiva. Villajoyosa CF stay third, despite being held nil-nil at Redovan, whilst CD Almoradi are just a point behind them, as they returned

by Alex Trelinski

to winning ways, two-nil at a rejuvenated Benidorm CD, who are two points above the drop zone. There was more misery for second-bottom CD Torrevieja who lost their derby clash, two-one at Benferri CF, and the mid-table Vega Baja battle between Orihuela B and CD Thader, saw Orihuela run out one-nil victors.

Easy pickings beckon for CF Intercity as they go to Torrevieja this Sunday, whilst Hercules have a Saturday date at sixth-placed Alicante University. Villajoyosa entertain UD Ilicitana and Almoradi have a home derby clash with Orihuela. UD Horadada suffered a five-one thrashing at Ilicitana, and have Benidorm CD as their opponents on Sunday.

Primera regional Racing San Miguel stayed on top of group eight of the Primera, after defeating struggling CD Altet, two-one. CD Murada are a point behind, on the back of a predictable three-nil victory over bottom side Monforte CF, whilst AC Torrellano stay third after winning two-nil at

third-bottom CD Dolores. Mid-table CD Montesinos had an afternoon to forget when they threw away a two-nil advantage at Atletico Catral, after the home side had a man sent off. Much to the delight of the Catral fans, Atletico

fought back to snatch an unlikely three-two victory. This weekend, San Miguel go to Monovar CD, whilst CD Montesinos are playing their “home” match against Hondon at San Miguel due to ground improvements being carried out in Montesinos. That game will kick-off on Sunday at 4.45 pm.

ITV Orihuela Vega Baja saw Cartagena University go above them into second place in the FERRMUR Murcia Federation Top Five competition last weekend, as the students recorded a 34 to 12 home victory, with it standing 1712 in favour of Cartagena at the interval. The Mar Menor Squalos used the Nelson Mandela

by Alex Trelinski

stadium in Torrevieja as their home venue for last Sunday´s match against Murcia University, and got a surprise 33-29 victory. The Squalos could only field 14 players due to fitness issues and unavailability, and within a few minutes they were down to 13 men, because of an injury.

That setback fired them up and they dominated large parts of the match to record their win. Leaders Murcia XV did not play in the latest round of games, but return to the field at Orihuela tomorrow afternoon with a 5.30 pm kick-off, whilst second placed Cartagena University entertain bottom side Murcia University.

Las Ramblas Golf Monday’s team game was two scores from four to count but with all to score on the par 3’s. With a nice round figure of 100 points, our winners were Dave Pulling (he’s starting to make a habit of this), Nick Campbell, Marleen Billen and RegAkehurst. They even managed to get round the course without losing a single ball between them! (that must be one for the record book). An early contender for this week’s ‘Senior Moment Award’ has to be Olga

Douglas. Now, we’ve all walked off a green at some point and realised a club or two have been left behind; but a whole buggy? Olga was however back on the winning trail when we played the second round of our ‘eclectic joker stableford’ on Wednesday. With 40 points she just eased out Pat Cassidy who scored 39. Third place went Peter Jenkinson with 38 points. Two ‘2’s were achieved on the day, one by Olga and the other one by John

Shervell. A quick tip here from Terry Field’s Golf Manual. ’If you want to reduce your score by eight shots just miss out one of the par threes!’ Onto Friday and we played a two ball ‘Texas Scramble’. Apparently the last time this was contested was seven years ago! Terry Field and Nigel Price took Gold with a nett score of 66.75. Hot on their heels were Donna Campbell and Dave Pulling with 68.75.

Home walkers win

Walking Football teams from around the Costa Blanca, in addition to the Manchester Corinthians from the UK, took part in a tournament on Monday organised by the Moraira-Teulada Walking Football team. The Monte Mentals

from Los Montesinos, the San Miguel Strollers, and , as well two sides from the home team Moraira took part in the event, where each side played one another on a League basis, with the top two competing in a

one-off final for the trophy. The final saw Moraira A beat Formentera 1-0., with the home club wishing to thank their lady members for hosting the event, and to Lynn Clark, U3A Group Coordinator who presented the winning trophy.

Quesada Bowls

La Marina Golf Society Our first visit of the year to BonAlba resulted in a glorious day weather wise ,but the same could not be said of the scoring which, for the second competition running ,produced well below average returns. However, some members did perform well ,and top score in the Gold section went to Captain Bill Stobo with 32 points. In the Silver section the award went to octogenarian Bill England with a

magnificent return of 35 points. Like a good wine he seems to improve with age!! Nearest the pins went to Geoff Ettridge, Jeff Boardman ,Danny Divers and guest Paul Hayward. The TWO’S pot was shared by Danny Divers and Alex Leach. Many thanks to Helena at the La Marina Sports Centre for providing us wth Paolo’s tasty homemade pizza and fries after the game.

Our next meeting is at Font Del Llop on March 7th, first tee 10.00 a.m at a cost of 50 Euros when we will be playing for the Helena and Paola Trophy. List is on the notice board as usual or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk. A reminder of our first Quiz Night of the year is on 12th March. Please contact Iain Lyall on 966 393 203 or 634 326 451 to reserve your places.

What a glorious week for bowling! Very pleasant conditions and some unseasonably high temperatures for February (not that anyone’s complaining!!) There have been some very hard matches for the Quesada squads - some that have impacted the league positions. But theres still a few weeks to go, so plenty to play for. Heres the highlights: In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls played San Luis Trekkers who won the match 8-4 points and 98-88 shots. Unfortunately this means the Pearls have slipped to 4th in the league but only 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles so hopefully a good win next week will see them back in 3rd place again. The Diamonds suffered their highest loss of the season at home to league leaders San Luis Klingons. San Luis won on all 5 rinks with 103 shots to Quesada’s 49 shots and won the match 12-0. Quesada Ru-

bies also had a bad day with a defeat at the hands of Greenlands Maples, who won the match 12-0 and shots 127-63. Results in the Southern League included a win for Quesada Swallows against San Miguel Bulldogs. The Swallows won the match 8-4 points and the shots were 8475. A different story for the Swifts however, playing rivals San Miguel boxers. Although there were some close matches on some rinks, San Miguel boxers played extremely well and walked away with all 12 points and shots 108-64. This defeat means the Swifts will slip to 4th place in the league and have left themselves a lot of work to do to try to catch up in the last few weeks of the season. Finally in this league, Quesada Swans also lost this week against La Siesta Golds, who won the match 8-4 points but Quesada won the shots 8879. In the Winter league, Que-

sada played host to Benitachell in an incredibly close and competitive match resulting in a draw, 6 points each and the shots were 87 Quesada and 85 BBC. This performance means Quesada are now in 4th place in the league. Meantime, in the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers played San Luis Condors in another close match, which the Panthers won 6-2 points and 53-47 shots. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail. co.uk

JONES SHIFTS FOCUS TO BIGGER PICTURE IN CHAMPIONSHIP QUEST “The Championship is about the Championship. Grand Slams are like you go and buy a car and you get tinted windows.

the way they brutally dispatched both of them in the opening two rounds of this year is evidence enough of that.

Thus spoke Eddie Jones after England’s Guinness Six Nations defeat to Wales in Round Three on Saturday.

And their last three clashes with Wales have all been decided by very fine margins so it was probably about time Wales got a win after heart-breaking defeats in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

After a loss like that, the head coach is always going to try and put a positive spin on things. But the fact remains, despite their loss in Cardiff, England are still well in contention for the Championship this year. And a loss at Principality Stadium against a Wales side on a 12-Test winning run does not immediately annul everything that came before it.

The real test is how Jones’ side can deal with adversity now that they have tasted defeat. A Championship is still theirs for the taking, as long as Scotland or Ireland do them a favour. Last year England won their first two rounds, slipped to defeat to Scotland in Round Three and imploded thereafter.

Fast forward 12 months, and with Italy and Scotland to come to AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT Eddie Jones’ side are undoubtedly Twickenham in rounds four and back on an upward curve this year. five, Jones and England have to ensure that history does not repeat itself. After losses to both Ireland and France in last year’s Championship,

World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has studied Jarrell Miller more than any other boxer in order to avoid a “banana skin” when the pair meet at Madison Square Garden on June 1st. The 29-year-old, told the BBC that he “can’t afford to make any mistakes” during the defence of his IBF, WBA and WBO titles against the American, who he met and traded verbal blows with at

a news conference this week. “He’s the first fighter where I know about what he says, operates and feels,” said Joshua. “I don’t want to slip up against him.” Meanwhile fellow Brit and heavyweight rival Tyson Fury will “take another fight” before a rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

A second fight has been anticipated since their first meeting in December, in which Wilder retained his belt after an enthralling draw in Los Angeles, which most observers had Fury as the winner. Last week, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said he was “confident” the fight would take place, but changed his view on Tuesday by saying the rematch would be “at a later date”.

EL CLASICO CLASH REAL MADRID will seek some very quick El Clasico revenge when they entertain Barcelona in a La Liga showdown this Saturday evening(8.45 pm kick-off). Real were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by their deadly rivals on Wednesday night at the Bernabeu, losing their second leg, semi-final

three-nil, to go out four-one on aggregate. Two goals from Luis Suarez helped Barca get the win, with the only consolation for Real being that they dominated the tie, but were sadly lacking with their finishing.

Saturday´s El Clasico is pretty much the last-chance saloon for Real´s slim hopes in trying to overhaul table toppers Barcelona, who are nine points clear of third-placed Real. If Real deliver, then ironically the beneficiaries of a home win would be Real´s local rivals Atletico Madrid, who are seven points behind

The Royal Liverpool Golf Club has been announced as the host for the 2022 Open Championship. It will be the 13th time the Hoylake venue has hosted the championship, with Rory McIlroy winning on the last occasion it staged the event in 2014. Governing body the R&A said the 151st edition of the major will take place from 10-17 July. “We know that there will be tremendous excitement

among golf fans at its return to Royal Liverpool,” said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A. “Its famous links has a cherished history and has produced a revered group of champion golfers, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy most recently.” Royal Liverpool returned to the Open rota after a 39-year gap in 2006.

Barca, and travel to eighthplaced Real Sociedad this Sunday. Barca hammered Real five-one in El Clasico back in October, which cost coach Julen Lopetegui his job, but there´s no suggestion that the same fate awaits his successor Santiago Solari if Real lose to Barc.
