Consider tax strategies

If approved, the Withdrawal Agreement will secure the rights of 1 million UK nationals living in the EU. It means that the 300,000 British people who have chosen to make Spain their home have a legal guarantee that they will be allowed to stay here after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019. The Agreement also defines the Implementation Period as running from 30 March 2019 and until 31 December 2020. All UK nationals lawfully residing in Spain on 31 December 2020 will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. Under the current rules, UK nationals living in Spain must register with the Spanish authorities (at the Oficina de Extranjeros or at a designated local police station) to be legally resident here. Therefore, I and the team strongly recommend you ensure you are correctly registered as a resident, as is your current obligation. For detailed advice on registering, please see our Living in Spain guides. We will, of course, update our advice if the Spanish authorities announce any changes to the registration requirements linked to Brexit. During the Implementation

Period, you will be able to visit, live and work in the EU broadly as you do now. If you want to move to a different Member State, you will be able to do so during the Implementation Period. UK nationals and their families covered by the Agreement will continue to have broadly the same access to healthcare, pensions and other benefits as they currently do. Brit surrenders after three month manhunt

A 45 year old British national has been detained by authorities in Malaga in connection with the death of a 65 year old man in August. The incident happened at around midnight on a busy Fuengirola street in mid August. The suspect had punched Argentine national Mario Sauco following on from an argument the pair had had in a bar earlier. Mr Sauco fell badly, and though the assailant initially tried to help the victim, when he saw how badly hurt he was he fled the scene although blurry pictures had been taken

of him by this time. Mr Sauco never emerged from a coma and died in hospital ten days later, prompting a manhunt by police as well as a social media campaign by the victim’s family. Although it is thought that the defendant fled back to the UK the next day it is believed he has returned to Spain voluntarily to face likely charges. He was detained as soon as he stepped off the plane and taken to a court in Fuengirola.

Refusing Food TWO CATALAN separatist leaders have started a hunger strike in protest over the treatment they have received by Spain’s judiciary. The lawyer of

leaders Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Turull said last weekend that they had started refusing food as the courts failed to process numerous appeals in relation to their cases.

Jordi Pina said: “ One of the only legitimate protests that these people are allowed to do is go on a hunger strike.” Spain’s Supreme Court brought charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds against 18 separatist leaders,

following last year’s illegal independence vote. Nine of those leaders are in prison awaiting trial next year. A Madrid g o v e r n m e n t spokesperson said that the jailed separatists would get a fair trial.

MOTORISTS are to be banned from the centre of Madrid if their vehicle emissions are not up to scratch, as the capital’s council have launched new restrictions aimed at slashing air pollution by up to forty per cent. The tough measures mean motorists will have to test their vehicles’ emissions, with the oldest and most polluting vehicles banned from the city centre. Drivers entering the controlled zone in breach of the rules will ultimately have to pay a fine 90 euros. The move is also to help reduce noise and encourage more cycling in the city. Madrid City Council estimates that the project called Madrid Central will affect about 20 per cent of the cars that enter the city centre.

Restrictions for those entering the designated low emission zone vary depending on the type of vehicle and its “label”, which is issued following emissions tests. For example, hybrid cars with an “eco-label” are permitted to drive freely in the centre and use public or designated car parks with no time restrictions. However, diesel vehicles produced prior to 2006 and petrol vehicles prior to 2000 will not receive a label and can only enter the zone if they are registered in advance and have access to private parking. From 2020, these vehicles will not be permitted to enter the emissions zone.

Accused Benidorm rapists face thirty years in jail Three men, who went on trial in Alicante earlier this week, charged with raping a woman in an apartment they shared in Benidorm, face a thirty-year jail sentence if found guilty. The alleged incident occurred, in the early morning of October 30th 2011, when one of the men met the victim on an evening out in the resort.

The woman agreed to accompany him back to an apartment he shared with the other two accused men, where the couple then had consensual sex, after which she fell asleep. In a statement provided by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, the woman

was woken up later and gang-raped by the three men. The public prosecutor report, drawn up from evidence given by the victim, claims that the two men who shared the apartment arrived back at a later time and forced her to have sex with all three of them. According to the

prosecution counsel, whilst each of the accused violated the woman, the other two defendants held her down. Prosecutors are asking the court for a penalty of thirty years in jail for each one of the accused, on charges of one crime of sexual aggression and a further two charges of co-operation in crimes of sexual aggression.

Saved by the vest A policeman in Alicante has said that his protective safety vest was the only thing that stopped him from serious injury or worse after he was slashed across the chest with a knife by someone he stopped to question. Officers on night patrol in the city stopped three Algerian nationals who were already known to them when one of the men lashed out with a blade. Police have stressed there is

67 years for sexual predator

A court in Castellon has sentenced an Italian national to 67 years in jail for dozens of instances of sexual abuse of minors in the northern Valencia province. The 45 year old contacted vulnerable girls through social networks, mainly Tuenti and WhatsApp. In the end he had a roster of 365 children, many of the relationships established under a false profile. He then started offering them cash and

gifts for various sexual favours and full sex. The majority refused his advances but over 30 met him, most aged between 14 and 16. He also got other girls to send him pictures of a sexual nature, again in exchange for money. The court described him as a sexual predator of the worst kind, who purposely sought children from families

with financial problems or from a background of abuse. The trial was held last month when the defendant was found guilty of 32 crimes of corruption of minors, four crimes of sexual abuse and two other sex related charges. This week the sentence of 67 years was handed down, although under current Spanish law it is highly unlikely he will serve more than 30 years in jail and probably much less.

Doctors suing former boss ALICANTE’S College of Physicians are suing a former manager of their association for fraud and misappropriation of funds. Their president, Maria Isabel Moya, laid out the charges at a press conference last week saying that Jose Manuel Coloma had almost total power when running things. They allege this allowed him to divert €100,000 a year for five years from funds meant to pay for civil liability insurance, which had a total

A 44 year old Colombian wanted in connection with six murders in his home country has been arrested in Benissa thanks to a clever operation by the Guardia Civil. After having reason to suspect he was the wanted man they asked him to attend their barracks for a basic administrative procedure. Once he was there they were able to do a

visual confirmation and then arrested him. The man was using a false ID and passport, posing as a Venezuelan citizen. However they believe he is a Colombian wanted by INTERPOL with an international arrest warrant out in connection with six murders when he was a member of the National Liberation Army paramilitary squad.

Serbian The gunman great arrested faker

Officers from the Spanish drug and organised crime squad, last week arrested a Serbian man suspected of attempted murder, following a shooting in Benidorm earlier this year. Witnesses to the incident, which occurred close to the busy English Square back in July, were left terrified as gunshots were exchanged between rival gang members. Videos surfaced on social media sharing sites, showing tourists running away from the area of the shootings, which took place in Calle Mallorca, and left three people needing treatment for gunshot wounds, in Villajoyosa Hospital. Two of the injured men were Moroccan, whilst a third was an Irishman visiting Benidorm on holiday.

Police sources claimed the incident was drug trafficking-related and reported that the prime suspect was thought to have fled from Spain. However, two weeks ago, agents from the UDYCO National Police drug enforcement squad in Alicante, tracked down the suspect, a Serbian national, who had returned to the country, with a completely altered appearance, hoping to avoid detection. At the time of his arrest, on charges of attempted murder and membership of a criminal organisation, the 42-year-old gunman, was carrying 4600€ on his person. A court in Benidorm refused the suspect bail and demanded he remain in police custody until the case comes to trial.

Body found in search for missing British woman

A Guardia Civil helicopter involved in the search for missing British animal trainer Amy Gerard in Tenerife have found a body floating in the water close to where she was last seen. 28 year old Amy, who worked with killer whales and other animals at the islands Loro Parque sea world, was last seen on 29 November. She had been outside the Molly Malone Irish Bar in Puerto de la Cruz which she left with her German boyfriend Dennis Kissling at 12.20am, the last confirmed sighting of her. Amy’s family flew to Tenerife to help with the search and a massive social media appeal was launched. Spanish authorities also expressed their deep concern after learning of the circumstances she went missing in. The police have said that it is too early to say if the badly decomposed body is that of the young British woman. It was discovered by the Puerto de la Cruz lighthouse, close to

Maltese to the rescue

AFTER various diplomatic manoeuvres the 11 immigrants rescued by a Santa Pola fishing boat off the coast of Libya have now disembarked in Malta. After initial reports that the Maltese were unwilling to accept the human cargo the “Nuestra Madre Loreto” was heading for Spain.

However Malta said at the weekend they would accept the immigrants to comply with international law as the closest point. Once they have received medical attention the group will be transferred to Spain who have agreed to have

Gemelos 28 is comprised of two identical towers, 22 floors in height, containing 168 luxury apartments, all with spectacular sea views, built a few metres from the sea on a headland known as Punta Llisera in Rincon de Loix area of Benidorm. Part of the complex was actually

constructed in contravention of the maritime-terrestrial coastal law, which forbids building within 20 metres of the sea. Owners of apartments located in the tall building situated just behind the newly constructed towers brought the complaint to the supreme court, as they were unhappy with the fact that their properties no longer had uninterrupted sea views, consequently diminishing their value considerably. The majority of Gemolos 28 apartments were sold before the property crisis, at prices ranging from 400,000€ to 700,000€, to which the Valencian government would have to add 20% when the compensation payments are made to owners They are also faced with a bill of around 72 million euros in demolition costs for the two towers, as environmental considerations

would be involved. The complex adjoins the protected, natural park of the Serra Gelada and is located only a few metres from the ocean, which could also cause damage to marine fauna and flora. The two buildings actually infringe the coastal law boundaries by a mere four metres, which gives owners of Gemelos 28 hope that the demolition decree will not be executed.One resident, speaking to the Spanish press dismissed the speculation as nonsense, “For the moment, nobody from the Administration has contacted us to talk about the compensation that would correspond to us”. “The boundaries could be modified to avoid this ridiculous situation,” he said expressing his opinion that “the line demarcation could be adjusted or whatever, but we all have to find a solution,” pointing out that once demolished, the towers could actually be rebuilt four metres further back from the sea completely legally. This fact was backed up by regional councillor for urban planning, Lourdes Casselles, who told reporters that, “there is no urban problem to rebuild in the area.” Furthermore, should the developer re-submit plans for the development with four metres difference, “all the permits and licenses to build are in place, providing construction respects with the public domain and the established buildability of the project,” said the Casselles.

Death of a president, war hero and father

GEORGE HW Bush, the 41st president of the USA, died last week at the age of 94 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease that saw him wheelchair-bound for his last few years. He served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan and became the first man in over 150 years to move straight from VP to the top job. He will probably be most remembered for his role as Commander in Chief during the first Gulf War which was viewed as a victory against Iraq but regarded by many as the trigger point for much of the world’s recent terrorist problems. He also successfully guided the US and the west through the end of the Cold War, something Mikhail Gorbachev praised him for this week noting his “attention, amiability and ease with communication.” Mr Bush came from a wealthy political dynasty but unlike the current president went out of his way to serve his country. He served in the air force during World War II as a bomber pilot and was shot down by Japanese forces in the Pacific in 1944, an attack which killed three of his crewmates. MEMBERS of the Benitatxell Solidarity Roundtable met last week and pledged that no child in the municipality would go without a gift this Christmas. The Roundtable team is made up of representatives from the town hall as well as local charitable associations many of them with British ties; the Lions, Avib, Church Evangelista, Caritas, the Club Ladys, the Charity Shop and Mabs. The group will be triggering new social projects and trying to identify the most at needy families in Benitatxell. One advantage of getting together in this way is that they can ensure there is no duplication of gifts for some children while others miss out altogether.

The amount that the scam generated will probably never be known for the simple reason that most men were reluctant to let friends, relatives and wives know they had been in the club in the first place. However, the fraud has now come to light and the Polish manager aged 34 and three fellow Poles in their twenties have been arrested and charged. Police think that at least €50,000 had been fraudulently taken since the club turned on the red light in April.

THE two year project to convert the historic building on Calle Sant Josep 6, Denia, to allow it to house the new municipal library has now been completed. A delegation from the council visited the site last week, which will also house the Arxiu offices and have a multipurpose room. There has been talking of restoring the building since 2006 and a grant from the

Ministry of Development finally made it possible and work started in September 2016. The building used to be the home of a wealthy Denia family who made their fortune first with raisins and later toy manufacturer. The turret is probably the most striking aspect of the building which is in the heart of Denia. Many of the original features have been kept including an old Moorish mosaic that was uncovered during the restoration work.

THE CV 700 which connects Pego to Denia was closed for just under an hour on Sunday after a vehicle lost control and rolled into a nearby orange grove, ending up on its side. The car was balanced precariously over a small drop and the female driver was trapped inside. Thankfully the rescue team managed to remove the woman safely through the tailgate of her car and the road was quickly reopened.

How to stop split ends

formulas. Split ends are caused by excessive stress on the hair follicle, so keeping each strand hydrated and strong is key. Keep in mind that if your hair is chemically coloured, you should look for sulphate free shampoos, as not only do sulphates make it more difficult for colour to stay in the hair, b u t they also strip

natural oils from the hair and skin, meaning more overall damage. To keep hair extra moisturised, use a hair oil when you wash your hair and a hair mask once a week. After washing your hair comes drying your hair. Whether you choose to towel dry your hair or dry it using a hairdryer, there are always things that you can do to avoid damage. Your hair is at its most vulnerable when it’s drying, so it’s always best to make sure that you do not rub it with a towel. Instead, squeeze the excess water out of it using a towel. Rubbing encourages split ends to move further up the hair, actually causing more damage and breakage. Never use your hairbrush

on wet hair. When hair is wet, it is at its most vulnerable. Instead of using your hair brush, which will most likely pull, snap, and fray the hair strands, use a wide tooth comb and start from the bottom of your hair to work out large knots. Heat damage is one of the most common forms of hair problems. However, it is possible to keep heat damage to a minimum. The optimum styling temperature for hair is 180°C, anything above or below this will cause more damage than is needed. Temperatures above are just adding unnecessary heat that will not effect the styling outcome, while temperatures below simply aren’t as effective for styling and will extend the length of time that your hair is exposed. If possible, set your hair dryer and stylers to 180°C

before use to make sure that you’re always using the optimal temperature. The only way to well and truly get rid of split ends is to trim your hair. While this may seem like the last thing that you want to

do, starting with a blank canvas of new ends allows you to take more control, and instead of trying to do the impossible and reverse split ends, instead you can prevent them from ever occurring.

Party proof your make up 1. Primer — there are many different types of primer for all sorts of different skin types, but if you’re choosing the right one, it will transform your skin into the perfect blank canvas, and give the makeup something to stick onto. 2. Layering up coverage — thin layers dry faster. Thick coats of foundation or concealer are more likely to crease, so start small and build up! It’s easier to add product then it is to take it away.

3. Bake your makeup — pack loose powder onto areas that makeup normally slips off, like the under eyes, and leave it to set before brushing off excess product with a fluffy brush. Baking sets the makeup to the skin, making sure it stays put all night long. 4. Matte lipstick — Matte lipstick is the most long lasting type out of them all, aside from liquid lipsticks. If you have an especially steady hand and want a crisp and intense lip colour, opt

for liquid lipsticks. However, if you aren’t that confident in your application abilities or only desire a wash of colour, dab lipstick onto your lips and blend in with your finger. If you make any mistakes, don’t worry. Either take some concealer and a small brush and cover it up, or take some makeup remover and a cotton bud and tidy it up that way. 5. Setting spray — this is the final step to party proofing your makeup. It does exactly what it says: sets

your makeup. Like primer, there are many different types of setting spray, some targeting specific skin types, longevity, or desired finish. Once you’ve found a setting spray that you like, merely spray it onto a finished face of makeup and you’re good to go!

What NOT to feed your dog this Christmas Arguably, one of the best things about Christmas is the food. But what might be a traditional Christmas dinner to you can be a toxic mess for your pets. If you don’t want to leave them out of the festivities but want to know what to watch out for, we’ve got you covered. One of the first things to be aware of when it comes to feeding your dog on Christmas day is meat. Watch out for the cuts of meat that you’re giving your dog. Make sure that all of the fat is trimmed off, it is fully cooked and cooled, and that there are no bones. Bones can splinter during digestion and pierce the organs of your furry friend. The same goes for fish, too. Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives are all part of the Allium family, which is toxic to dogs. These foods are toxic in any form – powdered, pureed, or whole. If ingested, they can cause anaemia, causing symptoms like weakness, pale gums, decreased heart rate and collapsing. If you’re using any of these ingredients to cook your turkey or potatoes, it’s best to leave them out of the dogs bowl on Christmas day. Remember that these

Nuts, especially macadamia nuts, are some of the most poisonous foods that a dog can ingest. Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, increased body temperature, l e t h a r g y, and can even affect the nervous system. Nut butters,

especially peanut butter, are also potentially dangerous if they contain xylitol, a sweetener with a tendency to cause hypoglycaemia in dogs. Look out for that on the ingredients list. Mince pies and Christmas cake are unsafe for your furry friends due to the dried fruit, spices, and alcohol found in the desserts. All of these ingredients can cause serious damage to your dog’s health. Chocolate is widely known for causing health issues with dogs, but on Christmas day amongst all of the commotion it is easy for them to slip past you and eat something that they shouldn’t. Remember to watch your dog carefully, and if there is anything that they shouldn’t eat, keep it out of the way. If you’re unsure about whether to feed something to your dog, research it, or substitute it for something that you know is safe.

Top five tips for selling at Christmas

Local - Food, Drink & Entertainment Sunday clean-up Fishermen, history and turtles success

THANKS to David Stockton for letting The Weekender know about “Participacion Ciudadana” last Sunday, the clean-up of La Falda in Calpe by volunteers. Everyone met at the Peñon car park where Carole and Malcolm Saunders issued the vital kit for the job,

namely gloves and plastic bags. After a solid two hour stint on an unseasonably warm day, the group had collected 20 bags of rubbish including plastics, cans, paper and glass from the bushes and scrubland. Afterwards, everyone went to Restaurante Zafiro for a well-earned paella.

THE Oceanographic Foundation and Project Javea are organising two marine based activities this month. On Sunday 9 December there is a free guided route showing aspects of the town’s nautical history going back to Roman times. As a family event there will also be storytelling with the emphasis on the fishing history of the port. If you’re interested in this the starting venue is the fish market in Javea Port, starting at 10.30am and finishing at about 12.30pm.

LA Xara has been awarded a grant of €28,000 from the Alicante Provincial Council to convert El Pinaret park into a multi-adventure zone. To qualify the town needs to find a contractor

On 28 December, a Friday, there is a route starting at the Parador de Turismo then on to the Arenal, looking at the bio-diversity, history and culture of the area with once again the emphasis being on the sea and coastline. After the walk the Oceanografic Foundation plans to release a turtle back into the ocean which was recovered from the sea and is now ready to return to the wild.

Chinese stars hit the beach THE Chinese national beach football team are in Benidorm for winter training and they were welcomed to the town by Mayor Toni Perez this week. Spaniard Ramiro Amarelle, regarded by many as the greatest ever player in the fast growing sport, will be coaching the “Red Dragons” taking advantage of Benidorm’s great winter climate and miles of sand.

Friendly matches will also be arranged as well as an introduction to local cuisine and culture during the team’s time off. The team itself is part of the Chinese Football Association and represents China in the main events for the sport around the world, including the popular Beach Football World Cup.

They are built without digging down or using mortar and the skill is in finding or

World Heritage Sites receive special preservation status and can apply to UNESCO for funds to help preserve them. Many stone walls in the area have been damaged or destroyed over the years for various reasons such as urban construction, decay and lack of knowledge in how to maintain them.

AMAZING DAY FOR ARC ANIMAL CHARITY Wonderful sunshine and a great atmosphere prevailed at the annual Jalon Valley ARC Christmas Fayre on Sunday 2nd December. There were some amazing gifts displayed on all the lovely stalls, so we hope the huge number of people who came managed to find Christmas presents for your loved ones and you all enjoyed yourselves. Santa came by during his busy schedule, ably assisted by his two elves, Lily and Evva, and several children visited him in his grotto. We also had face painting this year and there were some lovely designs being displayed on happy children’s faces. As always there was a fabulous display of cakes and savouries all donated by many generous supporters, thank you all. This year we also had some tasty Mulled Wine to bring Christmas Cheer. Lynne Henry baked one of her specially designed cakes to be raffled, with Jayne from ARC the lucky winner. Shirley and other crafty people made some lovely things for our ARC craft stall including toys for the dogs and cats. Shirley also made a fabulous Christmas cake, which will be raffled at our Bag-Packing days at Iceland, Benissa on 21st& 23rd of December. Please come along to support ARC on those days. Matt Mason kept us entertained with

his lovely voice singing Christmas carols and many popular songs, we were also joined by the Jukes playing their Ukuleles and singing a wide variety of carols and songs. Many thanks to both Matt and the Jukes for giving freely of their time and talents, which was much appreciated. Many local businesses donated some wonderful prizes for the super Raffle and many people also donated over 100 prizes for the Tombola stall. Both raised lots of money for ARC and we thank everyone for their generosity. The whole day was a great success and our best Christmas fair to date raising nearly €2500 for the animals in ARC’s care. The work never stops though, as ARC continues to rescue and care for abandoned

animals, dumped kittens and puppies. All have to be fed, have vet treatment, injections, neutered and cared for. Not to mention all the feral cat colonies in the Valley that ARC helps to support. So, the fundraising continues at a pace. There is a fair for ARC on 13th December at Bar Citrus, Orba from 1 pm to 5 pm. Please come along and support us there. Plus PLEASE do your Christmas Shopping at Iceland, Benissa on 21st and 23rd December, where our volunteers will help you pack your bags and there will be another raffle with great prizes. Christmas arrives early in Benidorm

Lovers of all things festive are in for a treat, as the traditional Benidorm Christmas market has already opened for business in order to take advantage of the two early December bank holidays which this year fall as a bridge to the weekend. The Plaza de Navidad Christmas themed zone opened last Saturday, with a firework display, children’s entertainment and the switching on of the festive lights. NEW Suzuki Vitara For the 2019 Vitara, Suzuki has made significant changes. Gone is the FIAT derived 1.6 diesel and Suzuki’s own 1.6 petrol. Instead, under the bonnet you’ll find a low emission 1.0 litre 3-cylinder Boosterjet petrol engine from the Swift. Or the excellent 1.4 litre 4-cylinder Boosterjet that also powers up the Swift Sport. Both are available with two-wheel drive or AllGrip four-wheel drive. The 2WD 1.0T and the 4WD 1.4Tcan also be ordered with a 6-speed automatic transmission. All benefit from some minor external restyling, alloy wheels and a considerable improvement to their interiors. A price hike from the original 2015 levels is justified by Bluetooth and climate control fitted to all models and standard navigation to SZ5 grades. Off road the four-wheel drive is as gruff and eager as a Jack Russell puppy, yet, instead of crashing and banging over every pothole and ridge, it somehow manages to absorb these obstacles remarkably well. Better than any car of its type in recent memory. Allgrip offers four modes. In automatic it runs in front-wheel drive and decides for itself when a bit of assistance from the rear wheels is needed. In Sport, it sharpens up very noticeably, tightening its line through rain-sodden corners in a sporty Quattro-like manner. In ‘Lock’ you can also employ Hill Descent Control, which uses the brakes to retard the car while descending steep inclines. As with

the FIAT Panda Cross, using the handbrake disengages the Hill Descent Control, which is something to remember at the top of a hill. A LETTER FOR BRITS IN SPAIN

Her Majesties Ambassador by Simon Russell to Spain, Simon Manley, has written an open letter to all Spain. British nationals living in Rather than summarise we I wanted to update you on the recent developments on our exit from the EU. As many of you are no doubt aware, on Sunday 25th November, there was a special European Council on Brexit. EU leaders agreed the Agreement and Political Declaration on the future relationship between the UK and EU. Citizens’ rights is a key part of the agreement, so this represents a big step forward in providing certainty for UK nationals living in Spain. As the PM said following the European Council “If you are one of the over 3 million EU citizens who has come and built your life in the UK - come to be our colleagues, our neighbours and our friends - you need a deal

that guarantees your rights. If you are one of the almost 1 million UK nationals living elsewhere in the EU, you need the same. This deal delivers for you all.” The next stage is for the UK Parliament to vote on the deal the Government has negotiated, which is expected on the 11th of December. The European Parliament will also vote on the agreement. If approved, the Withdrawal Agreement will secure the rights of 1 million UK nationals living in the EU. It means that the 300,000 British people who have chosen to make Spain their home have a legal guarantee that they will be allowed to stay here after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019.

The Agreement also defines the Implementation Period as running from 30 March 2019 and until 31 December 2020. All UK nationals lawfully residing in Spain on 31 December 2020 will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. Under the current rules, UK nationals living in Spain must register with the Spanish authorities (at the Oficina de Extranjeros or at a designated local police station) to be legally resident here.

Here we are again another 6 am start from the shop, today it’s a cold, dark November morning and still damp after 3 days of heavy rain. Today there is 18 of us in 5 vehicles heading to the small village ofAlbudiete in the North of Murcia to participate in our last Marcha (Sportif ) of the year. Today it’s a short easy ride of the only 100km with 1500metres of climbing. Most of the route is controlled with a timed hill climb/ sprint in the middle for good measure so ideal for beginners. Once we

It wasn’t long before the prize giving started due to the cold weather, we were delighted to hear that Harry Morrow was first and Mathew Robertson was second in the Under 25 category, Alan Quearns received first prize in the 50-60 group, Graham Hope was second in the 60-70 age group and Terry O’Mahoney got the trophy for the oldest finisher, we also won the ham for the largest team. So after all the moans and groans about the cold, damp early start etc. and the fact that we had to follow a car

for most of the race, everyone was delighted with not only the individual but the teams’ achievements overall. Well done everyone, now we are all looking forward to

a well-deserved rest over the festive period and our next Sportif which is in March.

Arguably, one of the best things about Christmas is the food. But what might be a traditional Christmas dinner to you can be a toxic mess for your pets. If you don’t want to leave them out of the festivities but want to know what to watch out for, we’ve got you covered. One of the first things to be aware of when it comes to feeding your dog on Christmas day is meat. Watch out for the cuts of meat that you’re giving your dog. Make sure that all of the fat is trimmed off, it is fully cooked and cooled, and that there are no bones. Bones can splinter during digestion and pierce the organs of your furry friend. The same goes for fish, too. Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives are all part of the Allium family, which is toxic to dogs. These foods are toxic in any form – powdered, pureed, or whole. If ingested, they can cause anaemia, causing

symptoms like weakness, pale gums, decreased heart rate and collapsing. If you’re using any of these ingredients to cook your turkey or potatoes, it’s best to leave them out of the dogs bowl on Christmas day. Remember that these ingredients feature heavily in stuffing, so leave stuffing out of your dog’s bowl all together. If you still want your dog to partake in the festive food, consider making them a plain baked potato. While most vegetables are safe for dogs in moderation, make sure that you’re not cooking them in fat, salt, or garlic. Instead of roasting the Christmas veggies for your dog, steam or boil them. Look for ingredients like carrots, green beans, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes to feed your dog on Christmas. Make sure to cut them small enough so that your dog can digest them with ease, as vegetables that are too big

Zoo-notice Zoonosis animal shelter Murcia aims to promote responsible ownership of pets by issuing a €100 fine to animal owners whose pets are rescued from the streets. This is supposed to act as a deterrent to pet owners who are tempted to abandon their pets. This is following a proposed new legislation hopefully brought in for the Murcia

area, stating that abandoned animals may only be euthanized under veterinary recommendation. This new legislation would also include penalties for those who mistreat animals, and explicitly bans animals from being used in circuses, fair attractions, or being kept on display at pet shops.

How to stop split ends

While nothing will get rid of split ends, it is possible to minimise them. There are many steps that you can take that will help to keep your hair healthy and therefore keeping the pesky split ends to a minimum. Let’s start at the beginning of the hair care cycle — shampoo and conditioner. Using a good shampoo and conditioner gives you the base to build upon for healthy hair. If you suffer with split ends the best thing to look for is moisture boosting formulas. Split ends are caused by excessive stress on the hair follicle, so keeping each strand hydrated and strong is key. Keep in mind that if your hair is chemically coloured, you should look for sulphate free shampoos, as not only do sulphates

make it more difficult for colour to stay in the hair, but they also strip natural oils from the hair and skin, meaning more overall damage. To keep hair extra moisturised, use a hair oil when you wash your hair and a hair mask once a week. After washing your hair comes drying your hair. Whether you choose to towel dry your hair or dry it using a hairdryer, there are always things that you can do to avoid damage. Your hair is at its most vulnerable when it’s drying, so it’s always best to make sure that you do not rub it with a towel. Instead, squeeze the excess water out of it using a towel. Rubbing encourages split ends to move further up the hair, actually causing more damage and breakage.

Never use your hairbrush on wet hair. When hair is wet, it is at its most vulnerable. Instead of using your hair brush, which will most likely pull, snap, and fray the hair strands, use a wide tooth comb and start from the bottom of your hair to work out large knots. Heat damage is one of the most common forms of hair problems. However, it is possible to keep heat damage to a minimum. The optimum styling temperature for hair is 180°C, anything above or below this will cause more damage than is needed. Temperatures above are just adding unnecessary heat that will not effect the styling outcome, while temperatures below simply aren’t as effective for styling and will extend the length

of time that your hair is exposed. If possible, set your hair dryer and stylers to 180°C before use to make sure that you’re always using the optimal temperature. The only way to well and truly get rid of split ends is to trim your hair. While this may seem like the last thing that you want to do, starting with a blank canvas o f new ends allows you to take

more control, and instead of trying to do the impossible and reverse split ends, instead you can prevent them from ever occurring.

Sports & Local Sports News Quesada Bowls Club Report Las Ramblas Golf Society by Dee Stephenson A busy weeks bowling with mixed results for the teams. This week the teams in the South Alicante Winter League were playing catch up after matches were cancelled due to the torrential rain last week. In the enterprise Division Quesada Diamonds rescheduled match against San Luis Klingons resulted in a San Luis win of 9 points to 3 and 99-74 shots. And unfortunately on a very cold and windy morning The Diamonds struggled a bit in this weeks match which resulted in another defeat, this time to San Luis Trekkers, who won the match 10-2 points and the shots were 88-72. The Pearls however, had an extremely close game against San Luis Trekkers for their rescheduled match - the score was 6 points each and with a nail biting finish on the last end, San Luis won the shots 81-80 points. And they drew again in another very close match on Monday against San Luis Klingons - 6 points each but this time San Luis won the shots 101 to 91. The Pearls are playing well though and are currently in 4th place in the league. Quesada Rubies played their rescheduled match away to Greenland Maples, who won 8-4 points and 100 shots to 69. In this weeks match Rubies had a much better game and the match ended in a draw against Greenland Maples, 6 points each, but Greenlands won the shots 95-79 In the southern league Division A Quesada Swallows hosted Vistabella Picadors - always a friendly and enjoy-

able game. Swallows had a convincing win though of 10-2 points and 127 to 56 shots. Well done to the team. While in Division B, Quesada Swifts played MonteMar Matadors. A close match resulted in a Quesada win of 7 points to 5 and 99 shots to 90, and was enough to keep them in second place in the league only 5 points behind the leader Mazarron Miners. Unfortunately the Swans playing away, came up against the Horadada Royals playing at their best. Horadada won the game 2 points to 10 and 78-100 points. In the Winter league on Wednesday, Quesada had a resounding win against MonteMar. The match ended 12 -0 points and shots were 96 to Quesada and 69 to MonteMar. Its now extremely tight at the top of the table with Quesada only 4 points behind the leaders, Javea and a game in hand against San Miguel who are currently in second place. And finally after a very busy week, in the first round of the Premier 20 Knockout Competition, Quesada won their match against Vistabella 10 points to 6 and 130 shots to 119. This puts them straight into the semi-finals against El CID. Just a reminder that our popular Saturday morning chicken drive is open to visitors. Green fees are only 6 euros if you have your own shoes and bowls and 7 euros if you need to hire them. Anyone interested in taking part, please report to The Club, Quesada for a 9.30am start.

Tomy plays in the position of defensive midfielder, and although he is predominantly a defensive player, he is also skilled in building moves and game construction. The Argentinean player joins CD Torrevieja straight from CD Almuñecar City and he has previously played for Estudiantes de Murcia (3º Division) and Indpendiente Chivilcoy y Gimanasia and Tiro de Salta in Argentina.
