A LARGE hippopotamus decided to have a stroll round an Almeria region town after escaping from a circus last Friday. Much to the bemusement of onlookers, the animal´s walkabout included a trip to a roundabout in the coastal resort of Roquetas de Mar, as well as grabbing a snack or two as it chewed on some grass. The hippo, called Pipo, had his escapade recorded by passers-by and downloaded to social media, with the local police saying that he had

got out from the Circa Roma Dola travelling circus, with their workers managing to recapture him. It´s been claimed that it was not the first time that Pipo had escaped, with lobby groups and some politicians criticising the way the circus´s animals were looked after and housed. The Guardia Civil said that they had inspected the circus a few days earlier and were satisfied that regulations had been followed.

Tooled up thieves

NATIONAL Police got more than they bargained for when a car was stopped at a routine patrol in Elche and found to be carrying weaponry and an array of tools. The car had been spotted driving around the city and was not locally registered. The occupants were unable to give a clear

explanation of why they were in Elche and where they were going so the decision was made to search the vehicle. The officers found a pistol, ammunition and various tools and equipment consistent with house break-ins and arrested the group, three men and

a woman all Spanish nationals. It is believed they were surveilling the area for

a likely target and their kit included lock drills, screwdrivers and communication equipment.

Brits arrested for drug smuggling THE National Police have released details of the arrest of a British father and son at Alicante airport for suspected drug smuggling. A 22 year old man was stopped by agents on 4 April after they had reason to believe he was carrying illegal substances. The young man fled and after he was caught resisted arrest, leading to two officers being injured. When he was searched 200 grams of hashish was found in his posession and

further enquires also led them to discover that he was travelling with his father. The 50 year old had already boarded the plane, bound for London, and police delayed the flight in order to search him. They found a further 200 grams of hash in a bin next to the man, which they assumed he had disposed of when the officers boarded the plane. Both detainees are appearing in a criminal court in Murcia this week.

SIX MORE MONTHS Britain Given Halloween Deadline

BRITAIN has been given a six-month extension to Brexit, after a European Council meeting in Brussels that finished in the early hours of yesterday morning. The new Halloween deadline of October 31st averts

the prospect of the UK having to leave the EU without a deal on today, as MPs are still deadlocked over a deal. British prime minister, Theresa May, who had

wanted a shorter delay, said the UK would still aim to leave the EU as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Spain´s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, said the EU was working to get the best possible

post-Brexit relationship with the UK. “The important thing is to give British politics the time it needs to find its way out of a situation that stems from a referendum held three years ago,” he commented.

Churning… the worst enemy of your pension or investment portfolio? So, before anyone asks, no I’ve not given up financial services to campaign against the dairy industry! Churning, in financial terms, is when a financial advisor persuades a client to buy or sell funds with the sole intention of generating commissions, rather than acting in the client’s best interests. The problem lies in the fact that in Spain, financial advisors can still receive hidden payments from investment fund providers. I have seen numerous

the club took advantage of his son’s disabilities by using him for unpaid menial work such as cleaning the kitchen and floors. Police say they have been able to identify at least one of the women in the video and have spoken to her although she has denied knowledge of the film.

Just before her death, the couple filmed a video to prove that it was Ms Carrasco who had decided to end her life, after reaching the terminal stage of her illness.

SUNDAY SLIP

RESCUE SERVICES came to the aid of a British man who fell and broke his ankle during a Sunday walk along part of the Murcia region coastline. The 69-year-old man was walking with his wife through Cala Salitrona at Cabo Tinoso in the Cartagena area, when the accident happened at around 3.10 pm. A helicopter took them both to the Santa Lucia hospital in Cartagena.

Despite the incident happening last Thursday evening, details on what led to the ten kilometre chase on the N-332 have not been revealed. Local officers started the pursuit in the Pinar de Campoverde area and followed the vehicle on the Torrevieja-bound carriageway to Lo Monte on the borders of the Orihuela and Pilar municipalities, where the car crashed close to a restaurant. Two people were immediately detained, whilst a third man ran into restaurant where he brandished a knife and smashed a window, as he tried to resist arrest before being overcome by the police officers. Caught in Calpe by Simon Russell

A 28 year old British woman was arrested in Calpe last week under the terms of a European Order of Detention and Delivery for her extradition. It is understood that last year in the UK she was tried and found guilty of assault in 2016. She failed to return to court for sentencing and it was thought she had fled to Spain. Investigations led Alicante’s Judicial Police Brigade to believe she was residing in Calpe where they arrested her last weekend. She now faces extradition back to the UK for sentencing.

Meanwhile, the PSOE are easily set to become the largest party in Congress after the April 28th election, with 31.1 per cent of the votes, according to an opinion poll poll published on Monday in the ABC newspaper. That would net between 137 and 139 seats in the 350-

A coalition of three parties namely the Partido Popular, Ciudadanos, and the far-right Vox would get a total of would get 45.6 per cent of the votes, equivalent to between 149 and 158 seats, but this would also be short of the 176 seats needed for a majority.

Airport drug seizures Civil guards at AlicanteElche Airport detained two Spanish citizens attempting to smuggle hashish out of the country last week, in two separate incidents. On the first occasion, the officers attached to the ODAISA, department of security, were alerted by suspicious parcels inside a suitcase, as it passed through an RX Security scanner. The owner of the suitcase was identified and intercepted at the boarding gate, as she was about to board a flight to Bremen in Germany. Once inside a separate room, the suitcase was opened to reveal 10 bags of marijuana inside, vacuum packed, approximately 1,150 grams per packet, with a total weight of 11.3 kilogrammes. The detainee, a fifty eight year old Spanish woman

was arrested for drug trafficking offences. On the other occasion, the officers intercepted a Spanish man, aged fifty one, who had passed through security, awaiting his flight to London Southend Airport to be called. Deciding to conduct a more thorough search, the agents discovered a series of bulges in the waistband of the detainee’s trousers that felt like small balls the size a nut. Using scissors to cut the waistband of the trousers, they uncovered fifteen small packages, which after examination, were identified as hashish, with a total weight of 90 grammes. The man was also arrested on crimes against public health and drug trafficking.

SPAIN welcomed over 10 million cruise ship passengers in 2018, a record figure, with six years of growth going back to 2012, when just seven and a half million passengers were recorded. Spain is now the second most visited country by cruise ship passengers in Europe, second only to Italy. Unsurprisingly the ports on Spain´s Mediterranean coast including Alicante, Cartagena and Valencia were the busiest, accounting for nearly 68 per cent of passengers last year, an annual rise of over 11 per cent.

THERE WAS a novel delay to an incoming flight at Mallorca´s Palma airport as an arriving Easyjet flight was held up in getting to its docking bay by a pink flamingo. Sunday´s novel incident saw the plane having to sound its horn as it was caught behind the slow-moving bird as it nonchalantly carried on walking. Wildlife experts were called, but bird eventually flew off from the airport as a team was mobilised to deal with it. Staff at the Palma terminal snapped multiple footage of the bird and it has now gone viral on social media.

THE heavy rain that hit parts (though not all) of the region last weekend and earlier this week caused the Tibi reservoir to overflow, creating a waterfall on its banks. However this does not mean that the water shortage crisis in the area is resolved. The capacity of the Tibi is much lower than was envisaged when it was

constructed as it has become clogged with sediment that have created banks within the reservoir, causing the overflow in one part of it while other places are still well below capacity. The 30 litres of rainfall in the Tibi area was actually much lower than other places with the Vall d’Ebo recording a whopping 240 litres.

Border control police on duty at AlicanteElche Airport, detained six members of an Iraqi family, as they were about to board a flight to the UK last week. However, the ticket agents became suspicious as each of the documents appeared to have the same page altered in a similar way, leading them to believe the passports were false. When the police

Looking further afield for tourists THE Valencian Tourist Board has said that it is starting to throw its net wider to attract tourists, a move partly driven by the drop in visitors from the UK and fears that a hard Brexit will deter the British further. While the main attractions for Brits are the old favourites of sun, sea and sangria other markets have different priorities.

DELAYS could be on the cards for the Easter holidays after Spanish airport staff are set to take part in two days of industrial action. Unions representing ground staff namely the Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), have called for two days of action on Sunday April 21st(Easter Day) and Wednesday April 24th. According to the unions, their members are not happy with clauses in their collective agreements affecting staff contracts when moving from one job to another. A union spokesman said:-”Staff involved will be those in ground handling services, aircraft and passengers, merchandise and mail, as well as the service of placing and removing of gangways, which connect the aircraft with the terminal.’ for the patient receiving it. Dr Juan Vial Carbo said that both patents had progressed well since the surgery which has only been carried out in two other Spanish hospitals. La Fe performed the second highest number of transplants across Spain in 2018, 315 in total including 24 heart and 93 liver transplants.

Altea Northern Gateway plans unveiled

Altea councillors have announced ambitious plans to transform the Northern, Porta d’Altea, gateway to the town. The 346,000 euro project, is designed to connect Plaza del Mercadillo, to the Casco Urbano, enabling easier access from the North, whilst directing motorists to an underused parking facility. Launching the Porta d’Altea project earlier this week, Altea Mayor, JaumeLlinares, Urbanism councillor, Imma Orozco and the Councillor for Infrastructure, Roque Ferrer, spoke of the need to revitalise

by Andy Mansell

the area around the municipal sports facility, allowing closer links to the rest of the town. “This project is born from the need to make visible, a parking lot of almost 400 places that is absolutely underutilised currently,” explained Orozco, “An action complicated by the level in which we manage to overcome the railroad,” she continued, with reference to the lack of pedestrian access points from the area into the town centre, which sits in a slightly more

elevated position. The car park will be provided with street lighting, water fountains, public toilets and a warehouse, to encourage its use throughout the year. “It is not a cheap project, but a very important and necessary action that will enhance parking, reduce costs, contribute to the sustainability of the municipality and dignify a space so degraded, improving the image of quality of our town,” she said. The Mayor spoke of his hope that the project would galvanize sport in the CamiAlgar area, eventually leading to the remodelling of the Sports Complex.

Financial planning for the future It is important to review your financial planning around once a year. You need to look long-term and not just focus on the year ahead. Planning to protect your wealth Good wealth management starts with establishing your goals and needs. A financial adviser can independently assess your risk appetite before building a diversified portfolio of investments to achieve your objectives within your risk tolerance. Make sure your arrangements are as tax-efficient as possible and your tax planning is up to date. Planning to maximise your pensions There are more choices than ever for your UK pensions, so spend some time reviewing your options. Always take personalised, regulated advice. If you are considering transferring into a QROPS, be aware that

although transfers to EU/EEA-based QROPS are currently tax-free, this could change after Brexit if the UK extends its 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’. Planning for the inevitable With estate planning, again start by defining your goals. Who do you want to inherit your estate, how and when? Understand the succession laws and inheritance taxes in Spain and anywhere you have assets and heirs.

Then set up an estate plan that achieves your wishes while making the process as straightforward and tax-efficient as possible for your heirs. Whether it is investments, tax, pensions or estate planning, take a specialist, cross-border advice to ensure you do what works best for your situation, today and the future. This article is general in nature. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of

current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

Arrest made in old murder case THE National Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a bar owner 19 months ago. Fernando Millan Chocero, aged 57 and from Elda, was battered to death at his remote bar in rural Petrer in what appeared to be a violent robbery. He was later discovered, alive but very sick, by two staff members who started work a couple of hours after Mr Chocero. The victim always opened the bar alone, a fact police believe the killer was aware of.

by Simon Russell

The workers had no mobile phone signal in the remote spot and decided to drive to the police station for help. They soon passed a park worker and told him what had happened and he was able to access the Excursion Centre to call the police. In a twist to the case, according to police sources it is this park worker who has been arrested, said to be a man of about 60 and a long time employee at the reserve.

Business & Finance Spanish economy downgraded

DESPITE gloomy forecasts Spanish olive oil manufacturers look set to produce about 40% more oil this year than the previous 12 months. However prices have slumped dramatically, down by 26% on the corresponding period in

Christine Lagarde with Spanish PM Sanchez.

C H R I S T I N E Lagarde, director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), this week included Spain in a somewhat gloomy fiscal forecast for the year ahead. She downgraded the countries growth estimate by a tenth, down to 2.1%,

and said she didn’t expect any significant fall in unemployment from it’s current 14.5%, although the Spanish government has predicted it will drop to 12% by the year end. Ms Lagarde blamed the continual boom and bust economy as well

as the high amount of temporary employment for the disappointing forecasts. Globally the prediction was for most economies to barely grow, particularly the emerging markets which have been rising strongly in recent years.

SECOND VOTE VIEW SPAIN´S Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, has said that the demographic shift in Britain three years after its decision to leave the European Union could tip the scales in favour of remaining should a second referendum be held. The UK voted by a narrow margin in June 2016 to leave the EU but the Westminster politicians have been mired in disagreements on how to manage Brexit, with increasing calls for a second referendum to

break the deadlock. Spain has a keen interest in the eventual outcome of the saga, with many exports, especially of food products, going to the UK, whilst the Spanish economy depends heavily on tourism with Britons being the most numerous foreign visitors, as well as 300 thousand expats registered as living in the country. Borrell said another referendum did not guarantee a different

outcome. But a rise in the number of eligible young voters, who tended to vote remain, and a fall in the number of older voters, more likely to choose Brexit, could tip the balance, he said. “It’s true that, with young people in favour of remaining and older people leaving, just through the passing of these three years, with the demographic dynamics as they are, I’m sure the result would be different,” Borrell told Telecinco on Wednesday.

by Simon Russell

2018. To further complicate matters other leading producers are seeing a major slump in production, 59% in Italy and 42% in Greece for example. This has led to a 43% increase in Spanish

olive oil export, something which would normally lead to a price rise. Agriculture Minister Luis Plana called the situation “anomalous and peculiar” and does expect prices to rise soon as the markets catch up with reality.

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Capital city of France and internationally known as the city of love, the city of Paris captures the imagination of lovers and travellers worldwide and is known for its chic fashionable citizens just as much as its iconic tourist attractions. It’s hard to say where to start when visiting

Paris – art lovers will adore the Louvre, the largest art museum in the world, and home of the famous Mona Lisa. If the thought of trying to catch a glimpse of this famously enigmatic painting is offputting, try perhaps the Musee d’Orsay, the former railway station now turned museum on the left bank of the river Seine, where many of the Impressionist works can be seen. The museum itself is situated opposite the impressive Tu i lerie s Gardens which stretch from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde. Designed by Catherine de Medici in 1564, this is now a public park of over 20 h e c ta re s , and during the summer months, the host for the Tuileries

Fete, complete with rides, amusement park and candy-floss. You simply cannot go to Paris without also visiting the Eiffel Tower, a magnificent tower which was built for a World Fair in 1889, and proved so popular, it was decided not to dismantle it when the event finished. There are 4 pillars at the bottom where you can purchase tickets if you haveń t purchased in advance. The lifts only got to the 2nd floor, and from then on it’s on foot. The fitter amongst us can also start from the bottom on foot (this, not surprisingly, is the smallest queue when buying tickets!). Views from the top of this building are well worth the effort in getting there! Boat trips are also available a short distance from the tower, which gives a fascinating view of the city (as well as giving you the chance to catch your breath back after the hike up the Eiffel Tower!). These barge ships travel around the Isle de la Cité, one of two small natural islands in the middle of Seine, running through Paris. This is also the location of the Notre Dame (Our Lady) Cathedral, made famous in the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. The Cathedral is classed as one of the best examples of Gothic Architecture in the World. A short walk from this area of the city (although Paris has an excellent Metro system) and you can begin the climb to the Sacred Heart Basilica, a Romanesque-Byzantine structure built above the area of Montmartre. Montmartre itself is an area of cobbled streets, bars, cafes and hotels. Check if they offer accommodation by the week or by the hour, if you want to know what type of place you are staying in,

as this is quite close to Pariś Red Light area and of course, the most famous of all dance shows, the Moulin Rouge, the birthplace of the Can-Can dance. For the family holiday, doń t forget that Disneyland Paris is a short train/

Metro connection from the City. Offers constantly come and go for this – the current campaign is up to 25% discount and half board thrown in for free, so it certainly pays to know what the offers are as you can make quite a substantial saving making the booking at the right time! There are plenty of hotels in Paris, choosing amongst them is simply to choose which famous landmark you would like to be close to! There are also daily flights from Alicante to Paris Orly. If you plan to visit Disneyland Paris, you can book transfers from the airport to your hotel too. As you can imagine, the city is full of places to eat, from some of the most famous restaurants in the world to some of the best street food available. Most restaurants offer a Menu Prix Fixe, a set menu of 2-3 courses at a reasonable price. Remember too, that Paris works on a price/seating arrangement. A drink is most reasonable when stood at the bar, a bit more expensive if you sit in the Café and can be eye-watering if you sit out on the street. You have been warned!

UGLY DUCKLING ROW Political correctness has gone crazy back in the UK where a supermarket chain apologised after it was accused of selling racist Easter chocolates. Waitrose was selling a trio of ducklings – white, milk and dark chocolate – with different names. While the white chocolate duckling was called ‘Fluffy’ and the milk chocolate one was called ‘Crispy’, the dark chocolate bird was called ‘Ugly’. That led a customer to share a picture of the £8 Easter gift saying that

they believed it was racist. Waitrose has now apologised after receiving complaints about the chocolate and said they had pulled the product from the shelves. The design comes from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling in which a brown duckling is mocked by others, and though that´s duck discrimination, I fail to see anything racist in what Waitrose was doing. The complainant should get a life.

Royal Ghurka Avda Jaime I, 8, JĂĄvea, Tf. 965 79 33 31 Â

A taste of real authenticity There is something really special about the Royal Gurkha restaurant in Javea, it reminds me of an Indian restaurant in Neal Street, Covent Garden, London that I used to visit more than 15 years ago that has the real old style Indian feel. The traditional setting of wooden furniture with soft upholstery, a cosy but spacious ambiance that offers comfort and tranquillity. Monika is part of the family team from Nepal and is top notch for service that is described only as an exceptional standard. After having been served

the popadoms and dips it was straight in with the main course because having starters as well during my mid- week eating out experience was pushing the boat out. The choices for our main dish was Murgh Tikka Lababdar soft chicken breast cooked in a thick masala gravy with herbs and spices to a medium chilli taste. Also we had a main from the Chefs Recommendations menu, Pahadi Murg Tikka known in Nepal as real street Hot Street food, a spicy hot dish not to be taken by anyone who is really not keen on spicy flavours because this dish really did hit

my breaking point and I like chilli hot spice. One thing for sure and that is that the beer really flows well when eating this dish. To compliment the meal, Pilau rice and garlic Nan was enough for us to enjoy without going over board and the Weekender team can say that our seal of approval goes to The Royal Gurkha for being marked as the favourite curry of the curry crawl and is highly recommended by us. Go along to meet Monika and find out for yourselves and if there is any space left try for their Bollywood Night next Monday 15 April. LOCAL&LIFESTYLE Third Arts Fair lined up

ANYONE wishing to take part has plenty of time to prepare for the Marina Alta Arts Society’s third Arts Fair which is to take place on 25 September, when the venue will once again be the beautiful Salones Canor at Teulada. Part of the reason for the advance notice is that the society needs to know how many artists are taking part or are considering taking part. They can then start planning the layout and also the detailed costings. There will be a bar service on the day as well a selection of tapas. Last year more than 500 visitors attended with plenty of art works being purchased and the hope is that as word gets around this years event will be even bigger. LOCAL&LIFESTYLE Midnight market

Javea

No smoking please

by Matthew Richards

AFTER a hiatus of a few years Javea’s “Mercatap” is making a return this Saturday, 13 April. The indoor municipal market will open its doors at 7 pm for a special evening of gastronomy that also includes music, workshops and kids entertainment including bouncy castles (which will be located in Plaza Celestino Pons just outside the market). However, food and drink is the focal point and people will be able to try the sort of fresh and high-quality products that the market sells for those looking for an alternative to supermarkets. Bakers, fish stalls, delicatessens and a Moroccan kitchen stand will all be taking part with tapas being available for €2 and drinks for €1.50. The doors close at midnight; contact the town hall for a full schedule of events.

No smoke without fire? The latest collection of cigarette butts.

JAVEA’S Pinosol Park is a strictly no smoking area and not just for some obscure jobs-worth reason but because the area constitutes a major fire hazard. The park was almost completely destroyed in the forest fires of 2016, but the cleaning crew who work there can testify that people continue to ignore the smoking ban as they collected over 2,000 cigarette butts on their last visit. The area is

cleaned by the contractors every two months and they said the time allocated means they didn’t even have time to collect all the butts - one of the primary man-made causes of forest fires along with arson and barbecues. Services Councillor Kika Mata said that people had a short memory and many smokers continue to ignore the risks despite signs making it clear that their actions are prohibited.

Celebration of the sea

JAVEA’S second Sea Weekend is taking place this Saturday and Sunday with over 30 businesses setting up exhibition stalls in the new venue of the Nou Fontana Marina. The change of location means that the route for visitors is now a circular one while there is also a larger exhibition area.

by Simon Russell

Services and products on display include speedboats, diving equipment, jet skis, wakeboarding, fishing gear, boat cleaning, marine excursions and much more. In addition, there will be workshops, kids activities, demonstrations and various

nautical activities. The fair is particularly aimed at people who are in the market for small boats (up to eight metres) and people will have the chance to test them out, on dry land or in the water. There will be new and second-hand crafts for sale, catering to every budget.

everywhere to pledge to give $5 a month to their favorite animal shelter or rescue to help support animals in need. Even if all you did was donate $1 a month, if a million people cared enough to do that, that’s 12 MILLION dollars raised for shelters across the nation and most of you wouldn’t even miss that dollar. Think of how much that would change the world for unwanted pets...especially if it were to become a global trend.”

Podenco, approx. 7 years old and will make a lovely companion. Her owner died about 12 months ago and she escaped and now has a litter of 5 pups, 3 boys and 2 girls, that are 3 months old and are Golden Retriever/Podenco cross. The pups also need homes urgently. Leg ulcers Ulcers are long-lasting sores that take more than four to six weeks to heal. They usually develop on the inside of the leg, just above the ankle with the exception of arterial or diabetic ulcers which are more commonly found on the foot. There are several types of ulcers but the most common is a venous leg ulcer accounting for over 90% of cases. What causes venous leg ulcers? Venous leg ulcers can develop after a minor injury, where persistently high pressure in the veins of the legs has damaged the skin.

Check the health of your eyes for the World Health Day S P E C S AV E R S Ópticas are urging people to have their eyes checked, as the World Health Day was on 7th April.

Less than half the time taken during an eye appointment involves testing sight – most of the time we are assessing the health of the eye itself, and signs of your wider health too.’ Opticians look for Not only could this help indicators of eye conditions, preserve vision, but tests can pick up signs of other underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and even signs of brain tumours. Last year, the World Health Organisation estimated that there were 1.3 billion people living with some form of vision impairment. What’s more, 80% of all causes of visual impairment are considered avoidable. Specsavers Ópticas Benidorm’s store director Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico says: ‘A trip to the optician can do so much

including cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and general health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. He continues: ‘We encourage everyone to get their eyes checked every two years. As well as a check of

your vision, a routine sight test might just reveal a more serious sight-threatening or wider health condition.’

SPANISH MORTGAGE TRENDS Mortgage lending to home buyers in Spain was up six point one per cent in January to 19,390 new loans, according to the latest provisional figures from the Association of Spanish Notaries. The average new loan made in January had a value of â‚Ź135,616, an increase of nearly a per cent in a year. This suggests that as long as mortgage lending for residential acquisitions continues to rise, the property market will continue to flourish. Mortgage lending figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) that counts new mortgage loans inscribed in the Land Register a month or two after the notaries count them, confirms the current situation.

The 12-month Euribor, the base rate used to calculate interest payments on most mortgages in Spain, came in at -0.109 for its average in March, a slight fall on the previous month, but 42,9 per cent higher (less negative) than the same month a year before. As a result, borrowers in Spain with annually resetting Spanish mortgages will see their mortgage payments rise by around four euros per month for a typical â‚Ź120,000 loan with a 20 year term. On a quarterly basis Euribor went from -0.129 at the end of December 2018 to -0.109 at the end of the first quarter 2019, following a trend towards positive territory started in March last year.

Building towards a problem?

FOR the first time in eight years Spain built more housing than it sold in 2018, an indicator of a possible housing crash or signs of a healthy economy depending on your viewpoint. 100,000 permissions to build were granted last year, a 24% rise and well above the 90,000 properties that were sold over the same period. Between 2008 (when the last housing bubble burst) and 2016, sales far exceeded new builds

by Simon Russell

while in 2017 they were more or less equal paving the way for the latest figures. The Real Estate and Registrar Association calls the growth “very reasonable and sustained” and merely reflects a growing demand. Other analysts worry that an excess of available housing will inevitably lead to a slowdown or even another crash.

City of smiles IF you want buy a property in the happiest place in the world then you need to make the move to Malaga, according to recent research. The study by the Happiness Research Unit ranked the Costa del Sol city number one globally as people smile there more than anywhere else. 20 different places were measured in

Malaga, plenty to keep people happy.

the research and showed that 14% of Malaga residents were smiling at any given time. Milan was runner up and another Spanish city, Madrid, came fifth. The average price of a city centre apartment in Malaga is around €2,600 per square metre maybe enough to knock the smile off some people’s faces.

Changing living habits HERE in Spain people’s living arrangements are changing dramatically, most of it not out of choice. On the one hand a recent survey has shown that half the single occupation households in the country, about two million, are pensioners and about 40% of those are over 80. On the other side of the coin less young people are living alone and instead are staying with their parents, with over 53% of 25 to 34 year olds still at home.

by Simon Russell

This latter figure is one of the highest in the world and the overwhelming reason is lack of money and work rather than a desire to still have someone do your laundry and cook your meals. The elderly living alone also brings issues as people fall ill or lose mobility. However this is primarily to do with social changes and more dependence on the state rather than the family, as well as increased longevity.

Home alone - increasingly common for the elderly.

NEW SERIES: A predominantly white school and a mainly Asian school swap pupils in an experiment to see what happens when children from very different areas mix for the first time. This week, white pupils from the town of Tamworth get a shock when they arrive in Saltley, central Birmingham, and become the racial minority. A transgender pupil is paired with a devout Muslim girl, a white mother overcomes her prejudices to go for dinner in an Asian house for the first time, and tensions rise when the students find out what they really think about each other

Drop Quotes

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Celebrity beauty tips are everywhere, all across the internet, stars telling us what they use to enhance their skin and bodies. Instagram posts on what they plaster on their faces tohelp them hold back the years without surgery, because none of them ever admit to that. Well, Brit actress Kate Beckinsale, 45, has been banging on about a new $650 dollar facial treatment promoted by a New York dermatologist, innocently entitled, the ‘Hollywood EGF facial’ – EGF supposedly means epidermal growth factor.

However, now here’s the bit that might make any male readers out there wince a little. The serum used is actually made up of ingredients derived from the circumcised foreskins of newborn babies in South Korea. Stem cells are harvested from foreskins and then cloned in a laboratory and injected in below the top layer of skin to encourage regeneration ….eughh! I’ll just leave this one out there ……… The puns are all yours!

Simon Cowell has been opening up on his plans for this year’s X Factor, which is set to undergo a complete overhaul after last year’s disastrous viewing figures. The new idea is to find celebrities from other , genres, like acting, sport etc and g sin y ead who can alr

e turn them into popstars, abl a ge for and s um alb l sel to new career in music. Cowell, who admitted he’s getting a real buzz from the show, said, “In the same way Pete Waterman made Kylie and Jason musical stars, and what I did with Robson and Jerome, I’d like to think

through the process we’ll find someone who can sell records rather than just doing the show as a stunt.” Before you get too excited Simon, remember for every Kylie, there was a Sam Fox, or a Mandy Smith, or a Pat & Mick, or a Nick Berry, or a Bill Tarmey, or …… Need I go on!

For every Kylie there’s a Sam...

Schoolboy sniggers at Maya Schoolboy humour is still alive and well in the UK, judging by an April Fool’s Day prank played on Radio 1’s morning DJ, Maya Jama. The host got caught hook, line and sinker, by a good old fashioned double entendre, when a listener messaged in asking for a request. Maya didn’t even flinch as she read out a message from “Hugh” that said: “Hugh Janus, your son or daughter loves you, they’ve

said that. Very cute.” Got it? Well the DJ didn’t and it took a few tweets from her clued up listeners to point the gaffe out. Seeing the funny side, Maya, who has clearly never watched The Simpsons, tweeted, “My first trick name blooper on Radio 1. He got me good.” Could have been worse love …… anyone remember the movie Porky’s?

Thrones to end beautifully

Just to be clear from the beginning, I am not a Game of Thrones fan and freely admit to know nothing about the plots and characters of the phenomenally successful series. I mean, I’ve heard others talk excitedly about characters like Jon Snow and Arya Stark (yaaaawwwnnnnn!) and it’s not like I haven’t tried, but I’m normally sound asleep by the time the theme music and opening credits are over. Anyway, that’s just me, as I know GOT fans can’t wait for the start of the next and final season of the show, due to air soon. So, for artistic purposes I listened to an interview with Maisie Williams, who’s played strong-willed Arya for

almost 10 years since she was 11. Don’t worry, I’m not going to issue a spoiler alert here, but the 21 year old actress did give a little hint about the ending, admitting, on the Lorraine Today show, that, “The last chapter was really beautiful and I’m going to miss it,” she said, adding, “I don’t remember what my life was like before this show. I just had no idea, really, of how big it was going to get.” Aaaaaaww how sweet, it’s going to be a happy ending, Maisie can go off and have a career after GOT and she ain’t going to end up like poor old Ken Barlow, riding a horse around in the snow, wearing animal furs when she’s 82.

Maisie has played Arya since she was 10

Sports & Local News Montgo Golf Society Report 5th April On April 5, 32 Montgo golf society members vied for the Oliva Nova Cup. A medal competition is not everyone’s “cup of tea” but nevertheless it was won with a highly respectable nett 67 from a 21 handicap. The Course Manager, Rafael Velasco Pedrol presented the trophy to a smiling Susie Snelling,2 ahead of Dennis Hammond (22) ,whose 69 inched George Braddick’s nett70 from 19hcp. Both Nearest the Pins were collected by the same household. Franz Budnick shot to 4.97 metres on hole 16 while his

wife,Susann, went even closer on the 3rd with a 1.46 effort. Susann put the next shot down and George Braddick’s also picked up a “ two” prize. Ted Hutton, Peter&Gill Williams and Hans & Susanne Duner were Society guests, the latter recording 76 to get into the awards ceremony. Earlier in the week Simon Fox beat a “ walking wounded” Peter Gardiner 6 and 5 to progress towards the annual Singles Trophy, Next week is a Stableford sponsored by Patrick Lynch.

Marina Alta Golf Society 8th April On Monday 8th April 2019, the Marina Alta Golf Society played a Stroke Play Competition game at the Oliva Nova course. The field was only ten players which may show that stroke play is not the favourite format for most society members. In 1st place was David Reid with a nett score of 72. In second place on countback was Val McVeigh with a nett score of 76. Third place went to Allan McManus also with a nett score of 76. NTP saw David Reid pick up his second prize on hole 3 while John Cunningham

took the prize on hole 16. There were no 2’s today. The Marina Alta Golf Society is a small but friendly group of players who play every Monday at the Oliva Nova course with first Tee time being about 10.40. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. Anyone interested please contact Denis McVeigh at mcveigh1@hotmail.com or call tel 638401170 or Alan Tissington at alantissington@gmail.com or call tel 656831893.

Javea Green Win Fed 4´s Play-off Final Having won the Northern section of the LLB Fed 4´s competition, Javea travelled to Bonalba to play San Luis, the winners of the Southern section. The weather was perfect for bowls and Clive English´s team raced into an 8-0 lead after just 3 ends. Unfortunately despite some

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Premier League Fixtures were all over the place last Week which helped to give the Alfaz Fantasy Football League a high scoring week with the average score reaching 34 points. The 1 Monday Night game, 4 Mid-Week games, a Friday Night game,5 Premier Games at the Weekend and throw in two F.A.Cup Semi-Finals gave the A.F.F.L. a total of 38 goals, 7 clean sheets, 46 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Manchester United’s Ashley Young who became Referee Mike Dean’s 10th Player he has dismissed this Season. With the final weekend looming large on the horizon we have a new Leader at the top of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League,Linda’s Team Tapas took over the Summit from John’s team Wee Aggies who had been top of the League for the last 23 weeks and at one time led the League by a massive 70 points and they now trail Team Tapas by 6 points. Andrew’s Team Ballers returned to the top 3 after clocking up 70 points thanks to Manchester City’s Laporte who scored 15 of them.`At the other end of the table,

the Wooden Spoon is on the way to Gary’s Upside Team who are now 79 points behind Dunkrat. In our Junior League William & Henry have taken a strong grip at the top and have extended their advantage to 43 points over young Olly’s team Olly F.C. Former leaders of this Section Ginger Ninjar have slipped down to 4th. Down in the basement Fleetwood Gian had a good week bagging 47 points but they still have a lot to do to catch Tom’s Real City, the gap a formidible 43 points. Linda’s Team Tapas have opened up a large gap at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section by stepping on the gas and moving 50 points infront of Barbra’s XI. Pauline’s Vodka Army remain in third spot and are likely to stay there. Two teams are sharing the burden of holding everybody else up at the bottom and they are Kim’s Ginger United & Liz’s Cookies Crew. Both are just 5 points behind Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans. Kevin’s Two for the Road have maintained their place at the Summit of our Across the Costa’s Golden

Boot League and have in fact moved 16 points ahead of former leaders Bill’s East Fifers who seem to have gone backwards in the last few weeks. Kenny’s Albir Boro Army Utd have managed to hold on to the coatails of the front-runners and are still well in contention in 3rd place. Gary’s Upside Team have replaced Rachel’s Blue Murder at the bottom and are only 7 points adrift of Leo’s Power Blueboys. Well it has finally happened, Pauline’s Vodka Army have been knocked off the top of our Champion of Champions League by Joe’s Keith Lard F.C. who have now taken a very fragile 3 point lead. There is also another change at the bottom with Leo’s Power Blueboys taking over from Dave’s team The Hatters who got his top score of the season with a tally of 58 points which lifted him off the bottom spot and leave Leo’s team 7 points away. I can’t see Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues not winning our F.A.Cup League as 10 of his team are all Manchester City Players where as 2nd placed Liz’s Cookies Crew 61 have only got 7 Manchester City Players. Not

great bowling from our team, the opposition could not be stopped and Javea only managed to win 3 of the next 14 ends, eventually going down 11-17. In the early stages of Derek Eldon´s match the scores were really tight and we were tied at 6-6 after 5 ends. From then on our team eased away and won 8 of the next 12 ends to record a 21-11 win. The last match saw Chris Evans´ team level at 3-3 after 5 ends and 8-7 up after 10 ends. A great finish to the match saw our team storm away to win by 18-8. So, with 2 wins to 1 the Fed 4´s title was ours! The presentation of the Trophy took place and our Captain, Jack Wardrop, thanked San Luis for a great match, Bonalba BC for their hospitality, our Squad for performing so well throughout the Competition and last, but not least, our band of travelling supporters for their encouragement throughout the Final.

many Watford Players have been selected so it seems Jimmy’s team will win this Section. At the other end Two teams will have to share the Wooden Spoon as Tommy’s Quantrill’s Raiders and Dave’s The Liverpool Way have both finished on 3 points. 73 points was the maximum score this week by William & Henry which is one of our Junior teams. His key Players were Manchester City’s Laporte and Wolves Jimenez who both scored 15 points this week. The lowest scoring team was Kim’s Ginger United with 2 points to their name. Both teams will go into the Hat for our Monthly Wine Draw. The February winner was Kevin’s team Mason United. (Cheers Kev!) Manager of the Month for April is being kindly sponsored by the Arlequin in Albir who do a fine selection of Pizzas as well as other fine dishes. With one week gone William & Henry have taken an early 2 point lead over Steve’s team Flying Pigs XI. Right behind them by only 1 point is Andrew’s Ballers & Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues. There is plenty of teams in the running for

this super meal for 2 at the Arlequin. The Draw for the Quarter Finals of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition is now up on our website and will take place the weekend 13th & 14th April (This Week)The Favourites have once again steered clear of one another with Darren’s King Carrakop 023 up against Macca’s Albir Villains who knocked out my Full Metal Jackets in the last round.Adam’s team Equipo Sin Hombre will play 123rd placed aptly named Could it Be.While in the other 2 ties our last women standing Sharon’s team Rovers & Out take on Nathan’s team The Boys Special. Our lowest ranked team Henry’s Heroes (153rd) are looking for an upset against Martin’s Marauders. If any tie finishes level the Replay will be the following week, Good Luck to all the Teams left in this great Competition. Games will be coming thick and fast as we head towards the end of another exciting season so it’s important to follow your teams progress in the final run in by logging on to our very popular website.

RACE #1000

Formula 1 reaches its 1,000-race at this Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, where Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will try to erase last month´s Bahrain heartache with a maiden victory. Leclerc´s Ferrari agonisingly suffered an engine problem with nine laps to

go, leaving Lewis Hamilton to sweep up for a win in Bahrain. Designed to look like the Chinese symbol for “shang”, meaning upwards, and with a flat-out straight for almost one point four kilometres, the Shanghai International

Circuit has proved a happy hunting ground for world champion Hamilton, who has five victories there three for Mercedes and two for McLaren. For Sebastian Vettel, there are creeping doubts that the German may not be as strong as last season and the 31-year-old has some-

thing to prove in Shanghai, where he has won just once before. Daniel Ricciardo won this race last year for Red Bull but the Australian is finding life tough at Renault after back-to-back retirements. The race starts at 8.10 am this Sunday.

SURE FIRE BET The 2019 MotoGP World Championship goes Stateside this weekend with the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas hosting the third race of the season. Spain´s world champion Marc Marquez is the hot favourite on the back of winning in Argentina, and

he has qualified on pole and won all six MotoGP races at the Circuit of the Americas, Introduced to the calendar in 2013, the Circuit of the Americas offers an interesting mix of tight and technical turns in the first

sector and the two highspeed straights split by the tight turn 11. Marc Marquez is understandably looking forward to his Texan weekend, but is leaving nothing to chance:- “Austin is one of my favourite tracks; these counter-clockwise circuits

always seem to suit my style the best. Although we have achieved a lot of success there in the past, we will work as we always do from Free Practice 1 and remain focused. Every year when you go to a track there are new things to understand and adapt to.”

JOY OF VILLAJOYOSA Villajoyosa CF gave themselves a big boost to book a play-off place in Preferente Group Four, as a 57th minute Botella goal gave them a one-nil win over leaders CF Intercity. It was Intercity´s third one-nil defeat in four outings, but they remain five points clear at the top, ahead of Hercules B who drew

one-all away to play-off contenders CD Almoradi. Villajoyosa remain third, but a point clear of CFI Alicante, who thrashed Alicante University six-one. At the other end of the table, CD Benidorm still remain just above the drop zone after a disappointing

three-two defeat at bottom side Villena CF, who recorded only their fifth win of the season. CD Torrevieja remain second-bottom, three points behind Benidorm, after drawing four-four with Callosa, whilst Aspe UD continue to occupy the third relegation slot, after a four-nil drubbing away to UD Hora-

dada. This weekend´s matches include CF Intercity at home to Redovan, Hercules entertaining UD Horadada, and Villajoyosa away to struggling Aspe, with CD Almoradi on the road to Elda Industrial. At the bottom, Benidorm CD go to Orihuela B, and there´s a Saturday trip for

SUFFERING VICTORY

England manager Phil Neville revealed he wanted to see his players “suffer” in their narrow friendly win over Spain on Tuesday night to prepare them for this summer’s World Cup. Beth Mead finished off a smart team move to give the Lionesses the half-time lead at Swindon with Ellen White thrashing home just seconds after the restart.

by Alex Trelinski

Spain pulled one back through substitute Aitana Bonmati but England played out the remainder of the contest to seal a 2-1 victory, in a match which featured multiple substitutions. “For us to do well at a World Cup, there are games when we have to dig in and block shots – that is what I

wanted to see and I just said to them that I thought they could have done it better, the next step is to dig in but show composure as well”, said Neville England have two further warm-up matches against Denmark and New Zealand, before their World Cup campaign gets under way with a June 9th clash against Scotland in France.

REDS VERSUS BLUES AFTER the excitement of the Champions League, it´s back to the bread and butter stuff of the Premier League title chase this weekend, with leaders Liverpool, boosted by their first leg quarter-final win over Porto, welcoming thirdplaced Chelsea to Anfield this Sunday afternoon. A stunning late strike from Daniel Sturridge way back in September rescued a point for the Reds at Stamford Bridge.

by Alex Trelinski

It´s strange how the knives were out not that long ago for Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, but the blades could be sharpened again, if his side don´t qualify for the Champions League. They may have booked an FA Cup final spot, but Manchester City will be hurt after their Champions League defeat at Spurs, and despite having a game

in hand over Liverpool, they won´t necessarily be relishing a tricky Sunday trip to mid-table Crystal Palace. Assuming Chelsea lose at Liverpool on Sunday, they will do so in the almost certain knowledge that Spurs would have already overhauled them by beating relegated Huddersfield a day earlier, and Arsenal could do the same(on goal difference) if they beat FA Cup finalbound Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday.
