EXPAT TRIAL STARTS
THE trial of a British national accused of trying to kill his partner and child in their home in Denia two years ago started last Thursday. The married couple and their son moved to Denia in 2016 and prosecutors said that a decade of verbal abuse and threats soon escalated to physical assaults once they were in Spain. In April
2017 the defendant entered the room of the boy, aged 20, and hit him several times with a hammer while he was sleeping. The mother came to help her child and she was also assaulted with the hammer, receiving several blows to the head. Prosecutors have asked for a sentence of 35 years for crimes of attempted murder,

abuse and threats. While the identity of the British family is well known from various sources the “Weekender” will be respecting Spanish reporting guidelines and not naming the individuals concerned at this stage. The trial is being held in Alicante’s Provincial Court.

THE SPANISH government´s contingency measures for a no-deal Brexit were officially approved by Congress in Madrid on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, the European Parliament yesterday voted for a law granting Britons the right to travel to the European Union without a visa after Brexit. Britons will be able to stay in the EU visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but that depends on the UK implementing a similar measure for EU citizens. Wednesday´s news from Spain has the Royal Decree stating that if the UK leaves the European Union without a deal, which could be as soon as next Friday(April 12th) there will be a 21 month grace period for expats to get a residencia certificate, which they should have had in the first place. All current rights will be maintained for British residents in Spain, based on the UK reciprocating for
Spanish nationals, and the Spanish government´s website with the latest details has also been updated at www. lamoncloa.gob.es The British embassy in Madrid has again emphasised that UK residents in Spain without a residencia should not panic, as the grace period will allow
plenty of time for appointments to get things in order. Irrespective of a deal or no deal, British nationals will eventually have to switch to a Foreigner Identity Card(TIE), but the timescale is fluid depending on when the UK actually exits the European Union.

Pensions – what’s the value of yours? In all the years that I have been advising people on transferring pensions, I have never seen such astronomical transfer values, especially in the finance, manufacturing and retail industries. In the past, Final Salary pensions were seen as the ‘gold plated’ pension option, however, over recent years, opinions have changed dramatically. Many UK schemes have unprecedented levels of debt and transfer offers are at all-time highs. Transferring away from your

CHOPPED CORPSE SHOCK
A MAN who was due to stand trial in Elche last Monday for killing a Torrevieja man, was found dead in his prison cell three days earlier, along with a letter confessing to the crime, which involved chopping up his victim´s body with a saw. Details about the accused man´s death have not been disclosed, but his note said that a woman also charged with helping him was innocent. Charges against a third person were dropped earlier in the investigation. The events dated back to August 26th 2016, when the accused got into an argument with his eventual victim over parking spaces, and with the help of a female caregiver that looked after
by Simon Russell
his mother, they kidnapped the 62-year-old man by coshing him on the head. He was bound and gagged and kept captive at his flat on Calle La Loma as they syphoned out 800 euros from his bank account and then tried to unsuccessfully get over two thousand euros out as a loan in his name. His car was set alight on the outskirts of Torrevieja, so as not to arouse any suspicion from the man´s neighbours. The victim´s head was found at a waste disposal site in Elche on August 31st 2016, having been shipped in by a rubbish truck from Torrevieja. The rest of his body was
5

discovered two days later after an extensive search of the site, but since the victim lived on his own, and his family did not report him as missing until November, authorities regarded the discovery as a mystery. Arrests took place at the end of January 2017, with the National Police finding a saw that was used to chop up the man´s body in his own home, with the assailants having thoroughly cleaned the apartment, which included painting the walls. The female caregiver, prior to this week´s scheduled trial, had already accepted a seven-year jail sentence from prosecutors for fraud, kidnapping, and concealment.
Stay at home dads on the rise by Simon Russell
WHILE the numbers are still quite small, there is an increase in the number of fathers opting to spend more time with their newborn children here in Spain. Under Spanish paternity laws dads are allowed to spend less time at work if their wife or partner is willing to transfer some of their maternity leave to them. The amount of men who did that last year was 16,400, a big increase on the figures a decade ago of just over 6,000. However fathers are still only spending about a twentieth of the time off work as mothers when they have a new child. Social norms in Spain still see women as the carers and while they are seen as bad
parents if they don’t use up all their maternity care, some men are perceived as lazy or unambitious if they do. However attitudes are slowly changing, especially in modern cities such as Madrid where the
practice is becoming more widespread. As economists have pointed out, it is not just a matter of spending time with the kids, in many instances these days women are earning more money than their partners or may have a more flexible job role.

Swimming the seven seas
by Simon Russell
AN Alicante man is attempting to become the first Spaniard to complete the Oceans Seven swimming challenge as he lines up another leg of the marathon endeavour this month. Jorge Crivilles will be attempting to swim the 25 kilometres of ocean
between New Zealand’s North and South islands, a stretch with cold water and strong currents not to mention the presence of sharks and jellyfish. If Jorge is successful he can add this to his crossings of the Molokai Channel (Hawaii). the Santa Catalina Channel
(California), the English Channel and the Tsugaru in Japan. The two challenges that will then be missing are the Strait of Gibraltar and the North Sea between Scotland and Ireland both of which Jorge has said he hopes to tackle this year. He attempted the North Sea
swim last summer but had to abandon this due to hypothermia. Money raised from sponsorship will go to various cancer charities. Only 13 people have ever completed all legs of the Oceans Seven, ten men and three woman.
GAY SWITCH ROW Work is Deadly
A ROMAN CATHOLIC diocese is being investigated after an undercover newspaper reporter found that it was running courses to “cure” gay men of homosexuality. The deputy head of the Madrid regional government, Pedro Rollán, warned of penalties if the Church had broken the region’s antihomophobia laws. The bishopric of Alcalá de Henares, north-east of Spain’s capital, denied offering such “cures”, in a statement. It said it provided
by Simon Russell
“pastoral and spiritual company” to those “freely seeking it”. The diocese denounced as “fake news” the report by El Diario, in which a reporter posed as a gay man seeking sexual orientation help from the Alcalá clergy. The reporter described how he had attended a session where an untrained counsellor told him that she risked going to prison for giving him advice on how to stop being homosexual.
THE province of Castellon recorded its worst start to the year for workplace fatalities since records started. There were eight deaths at work in the first quarter of 2019, with this figure being the same as that for the whole of 2017 with nine months of the year still to go. Describing the deathtoll as “a scourge” unions blamed cutbacks in areas such as training and manpower for the figures, something leftover from the economic crisis. They say that they are working with employers and businesses across different sectors to highlight the issues and coordinate preventive rather than reactive actions.
Online child abuser arrested by Simon Russell
A 29 year old from the Valencian town of Beniganim has been arrested in connection with 45 instances of harassment and distribution of child pornography. The issue first came to light almost two years ago after a parent of a minor said she had received request for images of a sexual nature from a man she did not know. It turns out that a friend of the child, also a minor, had been persuaded to pass on her details. The investigators now believe there are at least 45 similar incidents across Spain and in other countries, all Spanish speaking states. They are also looking into whether the accused contacted some of his victims in person for sexual relations and believe he was planning a trip to South America for the same purpose.

75th birthday tour takes in Alicante by Simon Russell
GLOBALLY renowned British pianist Michael Nyman is set to appear in Alicante as part of his 75 Celebration tour to mark his 75th birthday which was last week. He will be performing with the ADDA Simfonica on 29 June in a set that will also include ADDA’s tribute to Leonard Bernstein and West Side Story. Mr Nyman CBE is probably best known for writing the score to the film “The Piano” but he has also composed chamber works, concerts and string quartet pieces as well as operas and other film scores.
Long sentence for UK paedophile working in Spain
A man who disappeared before facing trial in the UK for serious child abuse and was arrested in Spain last year has been sentenced to 23 years in jail by a court in Llanwrst, Wales. Daniel Hayes, aged 40, went on the run in 2015 shortly before his trial for 12 offences was due to begin. Despite a major manhunt and a number of high profile appeals
by Simon Russell
it was not until July last year when the net started closing in on him. Worryingly, he had been working as a private English teacher in the city of Granada when the Guardia Civil were made aware of suspicions about his identity. This led to his arrest and deportation as reported in the “Weekender” at the time.
Hayes was found guilty on all charges last week, including seven rape charges and multiple sexual activity with a child aged under 13. The judge described him as an “inadequate individual with a distorted view of life” saying that due to the nature of his crimes he may well serve the full sentence rather than be paroled at the half way point.
Reservoir bursts its banks THE heavy rain that hit parts (though not all) of the region last weekend and earlier this week caused the Tibi reservoir to overflow, creating a waterfall on its banks. However this does not mean that the water shortage crisis in the area is resolved. The capacity of the Tibi is much lower than was envisaged when it was constructed as it has become

clogged with sediment that have created banks within the reservoir, causing the overflow in one part of it while other places are still well below capacity. The 30 litres of rainfall in the Tibi area was actually much lower than other places with the Vall d’Ebo recording a whopping 240 litres.

Pensioner killed by train
A 74 year old woman died at Cullera train station in the Valencian province after being struck by a train on Sunday evening. She was travelling to the coastal town from Valencia City and fell between the train and the platform when disembarking at 10.45. It is not clear at this stage if she

was hit by the train she was travelling on or another one. The emergency services were called but they were only able to co-ordinate the removal of the woman’s body from the track and it appeared she died instantly.

Relations worsen between Spain and North Korea THE North Korean Government sponsored news agency KCNA have described a break in at their Spanish embassy as “a grave terrorist attack” in a seeming escalation of an incident that happened six weeks ago but is only now coming to light. On February 22 ten people broke into the embassy in Madrid allegedly to look for information appertaining to the countries nuclear weapons programme. They restrained and assaulted
by Alex Trelinski
embassy staff in the process, prompting the comments from Pyongyang. The KCNA went on to call the raid “an illegal intrusion and a grave breach of sovereignty that should never be tolerated”. They are claiming possible US links, via the FBI and CIA, with the incident happening just a few days before President Trump’s failed summit with
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. An investigating judge in Spain’s High Court has confirmed that embassy staff were beaten and interrogated while being kept in handcuffs. Spanish police are working on the theory that a shadowy group of seven people, all US nationals, are behind the incident. They fled to the US after the attack and the Spanish investigating judge has requested their extradition to face charges.

EASYJET WORRIES BUDGET AIRLINE EasyJet has warned that customer demand for ticket sales for the next six months - which includes the peak summer season - is unexpectedly weak. The airline blamed uncertainty over the global economy and Brexit for the slowdown in forward bookings. As a result, EasyJet said it was now more cautious over its outlook for the second half of its financial year. The airline has already said it expects to make a loss of around £275m for the first

half of the year. EasyJet’s warning comes amid a tough time for the airline industry, with a combination of factors such as higher fuel bills and excess capacity in the sector contributing to its problems. Last week saw the collapse of Icelandic carrier, Wow Air.
Brothel gang held TWO PEOPLE have been arrested in Alicante Province for being part of an 11-strong prostitution gang that used holiday rental homes as brothels to exploit young Venezuelan woman. The National Police operation uncovered a chain of properties let across Spain, including one in Alicante Province, with the women flown in on the bogus promise of getting a proper job. The gang resorted to v i o l e n c e to keep the women under their control,

and assigned chaperones whenever they were allowed out in order to make sure they did not blow the whistle on their exploitation. 11 women were freed by the National Police, whilst six of the gang members, of Spanish and Venezuelan nationalities, were refused bail after a court appearance.
Violent attack on prison guards A prisoner who authorities described as “deeply un-adapted to life in prison” attacked an official at Valencia’s Picassent jail last week. The aggressor was being transferred to another prison but when he boarded the bus he lashed out at the officer, kicking him in the face and drawing blood. When the transfer eventually continued the man set fire to his belongings in the van. The culprit had been involved in several fights and has been found in possession of home-made

knives, skewers, syringes and other weapons. He has also swallowed razor blades and glass so he can be admitted to hospital. He had recently been let out temporarily for family reasons and on his return was searched and found to be carrying a mobile phone, drugs and razor blades which were hidden in his mouth. The unions have said that these type of attacks are becoming more frequent and will continue to do so unless more staff are hired.

No licence to print money NATIONAL Police in the Canary Islands have halted an operation which they believe had become the largest forger of euro notes in Spain. Named “Operation Malla” police raided a premises in Tenerife at the weekend and arrested four Italian nationals. They had previously seized €15,000 in fake banknotes, €9,000 of this from a single cash register in a town on the island. The 10 and 20 euro notes were described as being of a high quality, using sophisticated equipment and talented forgers. The group were believed to be making about €7,500 a month from the distribution of the fake cash, much of making it’s way onto mainland Europe. The operation commenced in April 2018 after the Bank of Spain reported a marked increase in fake 10 euro notes which had been the gangs principal output. Many forgers tend to produce larger currency notes, especially €50 bills, meaning the 10s and 20s were easier to pass off. The police also seized printing presses and other items needed to forge cash including ink, special paper, guillotines and computers.
CATALAN CLASHES
FIVE PEOPLE were injured and seven arrested on Saturday as members of Spain’s far-right Vox party demonstrating in Barcelona against Catalan independence clashed with separatist supporters there. The violence came amid rising tension in the run-up to this month´s general election and the continuing trial of 12 Catalan leaders for their part in the illegal 2017 independence referendum. Police estimated that around 5,000 members of Vox demonstrated in

Barcelona, in the words of their leader Santiago Abascal to “defend to the very end a united Spain”. Several groups of Catalan separatists, many of them masked, had organised counterdemonstrations around the Vox rally, which took place in the Plaza de Espana. Carrying banners denouncing fascism, about 300 of them set up barricades, burning rubbish bins, and throwing bottles and stones at police officers.
TWO dolphins have washed up on Denia’s beaches within a few days of each other, with their cause of death unknown at this time. The first one came ashore at Les Bovetes and had a fin missing, which experts described as unusual, and was possibly as the result of being struck by a ship’s propeller. The second was washed up on Molins beach at the weekend, which is next door to Les Bovetes. Rural police agents were called out as is the protocol for such finds but their initial assessment is that the creature is too badly decomposed for an autopsy.

Pablo Iglesias at the war grave site with family members.
PODEMOS leader Pablo Iglesias was among those at the notorious pit number 115 in Paterna (Valencia) where exhumation work has begun to recover the bodies of dozens of Spanish Civil War dead, murdered by Francoist forces during the bloody war. Although he would not speak to the press on what he called a private matter, it is believed that an uncle

of his is among the 120 or so people who were executed and buried in a mass grave, mostly for their political beliefs. Records show the probable identity of these victims, and many mayors and dignitaries from local municipalities who have citizens in the grave also attended to show their respects.

Clunk click reminder
MANY readers will be old enough to remember the “Clunk Click every trip” road safety campaign in the early 1970s back in the UK, aimed at getting motorists and their passengers to wear a seat belt before they became compulsory a decade or so later. Fronted by Jimmy Saville before he became infamous for all the wrong reasons, it was hugely successful and one of the first demonstrations of how a well aimed campaign could change the way people did things and probably saved hundreds if not thousands of lives. Here in Spain up to half of road fatalities involve people who are not wearing seat belts, tragically a figure that includes many children. Javea’s Local Police have started to address this issue on a municipal level with a road safety education
by Simon Russell
programme aimed at school kids, stressing the importance of buckling up. This Thursday pupils of the Antoni Llido secondary school were the first to take part in the workshop, with the use of a simulator that replicates a vehicle rollover - often a lethal scenario if you aren’t wearing a safety belt. Groups of four students at a time entered the simulator to see how a belt protects you and which also demonstrates the importance of not having loose objects in the vehicle, which can cause serious injury or even death when flying around the car at high speed. Feedback from the pupils was positive and hopefully they will get in the clunk click habit both as passengers now and in a few years time as drivers.

Nice and natural SHEEP are being used in Madrid to help clear scrubland in the capital´s largest public park, the Casa de Campo. “It’s a very efficient method to prevent wildfires in a much more natural way,” said Beatriz Garcia San Gabino, 46, who is in charge of managing Madrid’s green spaces. “Instead of clearing scrub with machines, you use sheep which don’t consume fuel and don’t erode or contaminate the soil.” “Manure from the 500 sheep also helps to fertilise the soil and spread seeds across the park,” she added. Most of the sheep belong to a breed
by Alex Trelinski
indigenous to Spain which is vulnerable to extinction, the Rubia del Molar which are mainly white with pale brown faces and legs. When the sun sets, the sheep sleep inside a large white tent set up on top of a hill which offers sweeping views of Madrid’s Royal Palace. As temperatures rise in mid-June, the sheep will return to their home at a ranch over a hundred kilometres north of the capital, and will move back to the park in midOctober to spend winter in the city where it is warmer and there is more vegetation.

Sanchez attends La Nucia gala Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, took time out from campaigning for the upcoming Spanish General Election later this month, to join a host of top national sportsmen and women in La Nucia earlier this week. Sanchez was in town to attend the Spanish Sports Press National awards gala, which returned to the towns Camilo Cano Sport Complex for the first time in four years. Local Marina Alta tennis star, David Ferrer, who grew up a little further along the coast, in Xabia, received the biggest ovation of the evening, in celebration of his long

career, which will end in retirement at the end of this year. Ferrer, who turned 37 on the day of the gala, was serenaded with a resounding chorus of Happy Birthday, by the provincial orchestra, before he spoke excitedly of his future plans to create a tennis academy at the la Nucia Sports Complex. “I want to continue linked to the world of tennis, which is what I have always done,” said the champion. Spanish Football President, Luis Rubiales,
was also present along with Hercules CDF President, Carlos Parodi. Amongst those honoured on the gala evening were cyclist Alejandro Valverde, plus a host of Spanish Olympians and Paralympic athletes and swimmers. Actors José de Luna and Alberto Nieto took the stage to receive the Sports Values trophy for Basketball movie, ‘Champions’ and the gala concluded with a tribute to the “Great Ladies of Spanish Sport “, who received their awards from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

Will the last person to leave town please turn the lights off?
TWENTY three towns in the Valencian Community have been identified as being in danger of ceasing to exist due to depopulation. These are measured as municipalities with less than a hundred residents, despite many of them once being relatively thriving places. The problem becomes a circular one - as people move away
by Andy Mansell
there is less infrastructure, less opportunities and therefore less reason for people to stay or move there. Many of these places have a disproportionate amount of elderly citizens and the fear is that when they die the towns will die with them.
The Valencian Generalitat is introducing plans to stop the problem which is in exclusively inland municipalities where agriculture was once the main industry. Connectivity, provision of basic services plus new developments and extra investment are among the proposals planned. Last weekend there was a protest
in Madrid by rural dwellers who felt that their way of life is being threatened by under resourcing and from being ignored by governments which focus on cities and coastal resorts. Across Spain youngsters are leaving their home towns to live in more affluent cities and on the coast where there is more work and better opportunities.
SPAIN´S Socialist cabinet has backed a plan to persuade some of the roughly one million workers who left the country during the 2008-2013 recession to return home. Among the 50 measures included in the two-year plan are scholarships and grants for scientific researchers and lower social security payments for selected workers. The plan also calls for the creation of an online search engine for job opportunities in Spain and a web-site which will make it easier to complete the bureaucracy related to moving back to the country. The plan will cost 24.2 million euros and the government hopes it will lead to 23 thousand workers to move back to Spain. The number of Spaniards registered as living abroad jumped by around one million since 2009, according to government figures, as unemployment soared in Spain due to a steep recession sparked by the global financial crisis and a burst in the property price bubble. The majority were young doctors, engineers, scientists and other skilled workers, and the government, which faces a general election on April 28th, first announced in November that it would introduce the plan. Over two point five million Spaniards live abroad, with the majority in South America, and close to a million in Europe.

The end of the lonesome pine
A historic tree, which stood for seventy years outside one of the regions oldest churches, was uprooted and removed earlier this week. The iconic pine tree, a symbol from which the town originally derived its name, had provided shade to the quiet church square in the heart of oldL’Alfasd’el Pi, since it was planted as a sapling in 1949. Despite the best efforts of the municipal horticulture department, the elderly tree in Plaza Mayor, had been dead for some time, giving the town hall no other alternative, but to order its removal. A team of contractors, carefully removed the thick trunk and branches, before later preparing the ground for its replacement. A young pine tree, six metres in height and 65 centimetres in circumference, will be planted within the next two weeks, to coincide with the town’s Culture and History week. The deceased pine, was actually the sixth specimen to have stood in the same
by Andy Mansell
position since the first one was planted back in 1786, half a century before the current municipality came into being. The settlement had previously been a dependency of its neighbouring town and was known as Alfas de la Baronia de Polop. When the town was eventually granted independence from Polop, some fifty years later, the newly created municipality gained its name from the iconic pine tree which stood in its main square at the heart of the village. None of the six trees to grace the Plaza Mayor over the subsequent centuries has lasted more than eighty years, which represents a short lifespan for this
particular specimen of pine. Urban factors have undoubtedly played a part in their demise, as compacted soil and lack of water, have prevented the normal root growth required for trees of this type to age naturally. When the recently felled tree was originally planted, the town hall broke with tradition by planting another one alongside. However, they were forced to uproot one of the pair around five years later, following a flood of complaints from churchgoers, whose path into the chapel was hindered. The L’Alfasd’el Pi Cultural and History week, which was inaugurated in 2012, celebrates, the April 16th date on which the municipality was born in 1836 and this year is dedicated to traditional arts and crafts, highlighting various sociological, economic and cultural aspects of the towns past.
DUMB THIEF CAUGHT Arrested for
A SANTA POLA man has been arrested for stealing a mobility scooter used by an elderly woman, after he sold the vehicle for 450 euros and provided the store with his details. The Guardia Civil detained the 49-year-old heartless thief who took the electric scooter from the owner´s garage, leaving the elderly resident trapped in her home. The Guardia recovered the scooter within a day after checking out a second-hand outlet

When the microchips in the animals were checked they were traced back to the accused who the police decided to charge. Both dogs have now been handed over to the Animal Protection Association for further care.
Empty Spain protest AT LEAST 50,000 people took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday to draw attention to the emptying of the countryside, which is a growing concern for rural voters with Spain going to the polls in the general election on April 28th.

The main political parties, aware of rural voters’ anger, were all represented at the march dubbed the “Revolt of an Emptied Spain”. Police counted around 50,000 protestors along the main march route,

LAST CHANCE SALOON MPs voted by a majority of one late on Wednesday night to force the prime minister to ask for an extension to the Brexit process, in a bid to avoid any no-deal scenario. Labour’s Yvette Cooper led the move, which the Commons passed in one day. The bill then went to the Lords later ahead of getting its approval to become law, but it is the EU which decides whether to grant an extension, with the European Council holding an emergency session next Wednesday at which Theresa May will speak. Meanwhile talks

between Conservative and Labour teams to end the Brexit deadlock continued yesterday, after Theresa May changed tack on Tuesday to get the main opposition party involved in trying to a agree a deal that the Commons would approve, much to the anger of extreme Brexiteers. Labour is pushing for a customs union, and if both sides cannot reach a consensus, May has pledged to allow MPs to vote on a number of options, including the deal she has negotiated with the EU, which has already been rejected
twice by MPs. Chancellor Philip Hammond has suggested that he expects Brussels to insist on a lengthy delay to Brexit next week and described a public vote to approve any final deal as “a perfectly credible proposition”. But Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC that he was “very strongly against” a public vote and he would not want to see a long extension to the Brexit process. The UK has until next Friday to propose a plan to the EU - which must be accepted by the bloc - or it will leave without a deal on that date.

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Located in the North of Germany, this ever-evolving city is the 3rd largest port in Europe. The city has been destroyed at least 3 times – the Great Fire of Hamburg, a flood from the North Sea in 1962 and also devastation during WW2, and yet the city comes back better and more economically richer each time. It is Germaný s 2nd largest city with direct flights from Alicante various times during the week. It is a port town, and as you can imagine, a major destination for cruise ships as they depart for their cruises to either the Norwegian Fjords or to the
Baltic Capitals. So for many, this is an overnight stay only on the way to other destinations. This is also a fabulous stop for many on a River Cruise. But the city has plenty to offer all year rounds to the tourist. There is the easy and convenient hop on-hop off bus which will certainly ensure that you are afforded with a list of Hamburg’s top attractions. A word of caution on this – not all of them offer English as a language option so ensure you check, especially before purchasing! This is a great way to see the city and mark out places where you would like to return to. Sign up for a walking tour, where a personal guide will walk you through the Warehouse district and other areas
of the old town. The city lies on the river Elbe and is interwoven with small c a n a l s leading into the old town. Picturesque bridges will lead you from old to new, by way of art museums and spice museums giving an intriguing insight into the importation of herbs and spices for hundreds of years. Tours often start from the main square of the town, next to the City Hall. The square is surrounded by chic shopping arcades, fabulous cafes and restaurants and in winter, is the venue of the large Christmas market. Shoppers of all budgets will find something to suit in this very cosmopolitan city centre. Small boat trips out can also be contracted here. But there is more to Hamburg. The city is home to a large red-light area, an almost 1km stretch of sex-shops, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. This is the area that is known for being the launch/discovery place of the Beatles in the early ‘60s. The stories of their first few gigs are a mix of truth and legend, although the popularity of the band after being discovered, certainly cań t be denied. Walking tours of this area usually include heading into the alleys
and side streets, a visit to the Beatles monument, built at the crossroads of the Reeperbahn and Grobe Freiheit (Great Freedom in German), the monument consists of a circular central piece to represent a record, and 5 musicians surrounding the same, to acknowledge the Beatles and various musicians who played with them in the German city. So whether you opt for the lovely weather of the city in Summer, or to enjoy all of this and with the added attraction of a Christmas Market, this is a city that does not disappoint.

So it’s not only the lighthouse that people come to Albir for, but no it’s also very well known for its choice of restaurants and visitors from the towns around Benidorm, Alfaz, La Nucia and even further come for the varied choice of eating establishments. It was time for me to visit the well known Bay Leaf restaurant although we have visited here on a number of times since it still is the place that everyone is talking about in Albir the regular following is apparent with a busy and vibrant atmosphere. I had decided to try something different this time so I chose the different tastes available with the Thali menu a set meal for two priced at €29.50, including ice cream or coffee. This culinary adventure started with a mixed starter of Onion Bhaji
and Vegetable Pakora served with a salad garnish and presented with a 3 sauce selection - with the mint sauce displayed as a bay leaf to give that added touch of artistic class. The main meal consists of eight individual dishes to share, served with a Nan bread and Pilau Rice; a perfect combination to enjoy at lunchtime or dinner. The platter was served with the food delicately displayed individual bowls, a treat for the eyes.
The Dishes Included: Homemade tomato chutney; Mixed Raita, a smooth cooling yogurt with tomato cucumber and secret blend of spices; Taka Dal, spicy lentils with a good balance of herbs; Brinjal Bhaji, an aubergine curry; a mixed vegetable special curry; Chicken Tikka Masala, creamy and tender tandoori chicken pieces in a thick tomato and cream sauce; Nepali Lamb Curry, a medium spiced tender soft lamb with a surprising tangy finish; Goan King Prawn Curry, sweet tasting with coconut milk and a hint of mustard seed. Is it me, or has the department for road speed signs gone mad in the Torrevieja area? I have recently noticed that the northbound N-332, just after it splits at Punta Prima and which is a single carriageway considered to be a dangerous stretch of road, has had the speed limit increased to 90! What also makes this situation fairly ridiculous is that the chances of getting to 90 on that stretch of N332 are usually nil as there are nearly always queues of traffic at that point, as advised by the warning panel, that you cannot see until it is too late to take the old road!
Stopping the pot in Pego THE Local Police and Guardia Civil have carried out two raids on suspected drug dealers and growers in the small Marina Alta town of Pego. A 57-year-old man was arrested at the end of last week for supplying marijuana to people, including minors. His home was raided and police found about 2,300 grams of marijuana, 17 bags ready for sale, just over a thousand euros in cash and a shotgun. In the second operation three men, all Spanish nationals, were arrested after large amounts of marijuana was found being cultivated in a house in
by Simon Russell
Pego they were renting. They are all Oliva residents and appeared to have rented the property specifically to grow the drug. They have also been
charged with stealing electricity, used to power the various heat lamps and other equipment required to grow the product. Police have not said at this stage if there is any link between the two operations.
Clubs, Charities & Events
Then you have the CV-905 in Torrevieja, which is a dual carriageway, that has had the limit reduced to 50 until it changes to a single carriageway again at which point it goes back to 80/90. Trying to maintain 50 in top (most economical) gear is nigh on impossible. and nobody seems to take any notice as they fly past with horns blaring! Barry Weston, Torrevieja. EDITOR:- The new speed limit on the CV-905 was imposed by the Valencian government as it is classified as an urban road, despite it being a dual-carriageway, and Torrevieja council and the Guardia Civil not wanting a change! Do any other Weekender readers have examples of crazy speed signs around the region? I loved seeing Ann Widdecombe on the TV on Monday night, and though I don´t agree with her Brexit views, she made some good points when she was on the BBC 2 Newsnight programme. Who can disagree with her view that we have the worst UK Parliament since the days of Oliver Cromwell, together with the worst-ever Leader of the Opposition, and as Widdecombe said, the worst Prime Minister since Sir Anthony Eden presided over the Suez crisis in the mid-fifties. Despite Spain´s commitment to expats, I´m still saddened to see my home country tear itself apart on the back of a referendum that was full of undeliverable promises. Sandra Heaton, Benidorm. The Brexit mess is just another symptom of people grabbing at cheap populist slogans and being fooled by them. There is plenty to see across Europe in the rise of far-right parties promising the earth in countries like Italy, Austria, France, and Germany. We´ve got it now here with the rise of Vox who are certain to get members in Congress come the end of the month after the general election, in the first far-right gains since democracy was introduced after Franco´s death. All these groups have a common thread in blaming everything on the immigrants and preaching isolationism and nationalism. I humbly suggest that everybody should read up on the origins of the Second World War. Colin Bestwick, Altea.

Alfas adoption day
Around a dozen local animal charities will be represented at the annual adoption day, taking place this coming Sunday in L’Alfas del Pi. Now, in its fifth year, the festival, organised by the APPA animal charity in conjunction with the department of health, has proved a successful way of finding forever homes for dogs and cats currently living in local animal shelters.

APPA President, Vanesa Pareja, explained that “around 50 dogs and cats found a new home in previous years of the festival” and additionally, “the number of volunteers offered as a foster home increased, which is another of the objectives pursued by the festival, in addition to raising awareness of the abandonment and

Festival dates and details confirmed THIS year’s Jesus Nazareno celebrations will be held from 24 April to 4 May, finishing a day later than the usual 3 May. The 28 April elections have prompted some last minute changes, although everything that was originally planned is still scheduled. This includes the Xabia Folk Festival, which will be on the 26 to 28 April at Plaza de la Constitucion where a marquee will be

installed. There will also be a one off concert on 4 May at the Santa Lucia Hermitage. There will be theatre nights on 28 and 29 April as well as 2 May and on 4 May there will be a stand up comic festival hosted by well known local comedian Oscar Tramoyeres. Bullfighting is not everyone’s cup of tea, but as usual these will be
part of the festival and will be at Placeta del Convent from 25 to 28 April inclusive. Vicente Tur, President of the Nazareno Brotherhood presented the full timetable, saying it “shows commitment to local culture and charity”, and announced a charity concert being held for Red Cross and Caritas on 30 April. Four decades of democracy
JAVEA Mayor Jose Chulvi this week gave an impassioned speech to commemorate 40 years of democracy at a local level, marked by the elections later this month. He said that in Javea like many towns the four decades of democratically elected councils since the death
An excerpt from the video.
THIS Thursday (2 April) was World Autism Day and the Autism Javea society released a video on the day itself in an attempt to raise awareness of a common but much misunderstood disorder. A statement from the society said “People with autism have many things to offer, we just have to approach them, listen to what they are saying, understand them and adapt to their way of understanding the environment and then give them the opportunity to be part of society and support them in this aim”. Many sufferers have repetitive behaviour patterns and restricted interests or activities, although they often excel at these and have above average intelligence. About 1% of the population is thought to be autistic to some degree and it tends to affect males more than females. Symptoms will usually become apparent early in life, from when children first start talking and interacting with other people. Do Dogs Dream?
Whether or not dogs dream isn’t known with scientific certainty, but it sure is difficult to imagine that they don’t. We’ve all watched our dogs demonstrate behaviors in their sleep that resemble what they do in a fully awake state. Paddling legs, whining, growling, wagging tails, chewing jowls, and twitching noses inspire us to wonder what our dogs are dreaming about.
What we know about dogs and dreams While our knowledge on this topic is very limited, the following known information helps us believe that dogs do indeed experience dreams. According to MIT News, Matthew Wilson, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, and Kenway Louie, a graduate student in 2001, have studied the relationships between memory, sleep and dreams. They found that when rats were trained to run along a circular track for food rewards, their brains created a distinctive firing pattern of neurons (brain cells). The researchers repeated the brain monitoring while the rats were sleeping. Low and behold, they observed the same signature brain activity pattern associated with running whether the rats were awake or asleep.

Ringworm
Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin. It has nothing to do with worms as the name suggests! The medical term for ringworm of the body is Tinea Corporalis. Tinea is a Latin term that means growing worm due to the early belief that the infection was caused by a worm. There are other forms of Tinea which affect various parts of the body such as Tinea capitis (fungal infection of the scalp) or Tinea Pedis which affects the feet The
typical
of Tinea corporalis is a round red inflamed patch that spreads outwards. The outer edge forms a scaly ring. There may be one patch or several. However, the appearance of the rash is not always typical and your Doctor may need to take skin scrapings for examination to confirm the diagnosis. The rash may cause only mild discomfort but for some people may be very irritating and itchy.

Look better in the buff: Get your sexy back without giving up everything you love Looking sexy, svelte or built in your clothing is one thing. Looking better in the buff is a whole other ballgame. Clothing - even low-cut necklines, shortshorts or tight-fitting tees - can hide your flaws and accentuate your assets, but when you are nude, there’s nowhere - or way - to hide anything. If you want to look better naked, you are not alone. Far from it. More and more people are into healthy living and getting fit these days. The good news is that there is finally something you can do about it that doesn’t involve giving up carbs and sweets, doing excessive crunches or having invasive cosmetic surgery. Fully one-third of Americans opt for minimally invasive fat reduction or body sculpting treatments to look better in the buff, according to a new survey of 500 men and women from Cutera, Inc. And those who exercise regularly are most likely to have a body-sculpting treatment, with

runners and yoga enthusiasts topping the list. According to boardcertified plastic surgeon Walter L. Bernacki, MD of Ohio Plastic Surgery in Central Ohio, “The newest non-surgical body contouring system is Cutera’s truSculpt iD that uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to target and permanently destroy fat in your trouble spots (think muffin tops and love handles) - in just 15 comfortable minutes with no downtime. We have found that the treatment works on all skin types, sizes and physiques, including individuals who were previously not considered candidates for body contouring procedures.” What’s more, truSculpt iD produces an average fat reduction of 24 percent, and visible improvements are seen in 6 to 12 weeks following the first treatment. Multiple areas can be treated in one session,
but additional treatments may be required for optimal sculpting results. “TruSculpt iD is a very exciting new development in non-surgical body contouring. The lower abdomen and love handles can be treated in just a single 15-minute comfortable treatment session. Our patients have been very pleased with the body sculpting results they can achieve with this innovative system,” says Dermatologist Jeffrey S. Dover, MD, FRCPC of Skincare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, MA. By and large, people are
loving their truSculpt iD results. In a separate study of individuals who had the procedure, 100 percent said they were satisfied, would get it done again and would refer a friend for truSculpt iD. And everyone felt better in - or out of - their clothes. So, if you’re thinking about looking into a new kind of personalized body sculpting without resorting to drastic measures, find a truSculpt iD provider near you by searching https://trusculpt.com/find-aprovider.

For the first time since before the financial crisis, annual house sales in Spain have broken the half-a-million barrier, say the latest figures, with a 10.1 per cent hike in residential property changing hands in 2018, as the Costa Blanca leads the way. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), a total of 515,051 homes were sold in 2018 – a factor attributed to a combination of economic growth, financial strength, improvements in the job market, and residential property being much cheaper now than just before the ‘bubble’ burst in 2008. INE data show that last year saw the market beginning to plateau, with the most moderate rise in purchase growth since 2014 – a year when the number of transactions only rose by two per cent, compared with 11.5 per cent the following year, 14 per cent in 2016, and 15.4 per cent in 2017. But sales numbers at the end of last year were their highest in a decade, and both new builds and second-hand homes were behind the annual growth, according to the INE. This fifth year of increases in home sales numbers is in stark contrast to the worst years of the financial crisis – 2008 and 2009, when property purchases plunged
by 25.1 per cent and 28.8 per cent respectively. In 2011 and 2012, sales were still falling in double-figure percentages, at 18.1 per cent and 11.5 per cent, and an end to tax breaks on buying main residences saw a reduction of 1.9 per cent in 2013. But from then on, growth has been consistent – in 2018, a total of 422,531 second-hand homes and 92,520 new builds were sold, the first being the highest number since 2007 and the second being the highest since 2014. The greatest number of property sales in 2018 per 100,000 inhabitants was in the Comunidad Valenciana and especially in Alicante Province, with 2,010 homes per 100,000 residents shifted. This means one of Spain’s most populous and popular regions was streets ahead of the rest of the country, given that the second-highest number of transactions per 100,000 residents, in the Balearic Islands, was 1,641. Andalucía was third with 1,537 sales per 100,000. In terms of overall numbers, Andalucía accounted for the most properties sold – 101,330 – followed by Catalunya, with 81,020, the Comunidad Valenciana with 78,800 and Madrid with 75,845.

THERE are many factors that come into account when buying a house - cost, location, size, transport and local facilities to name but a few. However here in Spain an increasing factor for young families is “how close will we be to the grandparents? Family units remain strong here, and when grandchildren come along these are often reinforced, with many Spanish depending on their parents to look after the kids while they return to work. the expense of childcare and turning to Granny and Granddad means that many people can start to get their lives back rather than wait until the children are school age. Many families see being within ten minutes of at least one set of their own parents as one of the key factors when buying a house. Often a few years further down the line the favour will be returned as children and even grandchildren help out their elderly relatives with things they may be starting to struggle with.

Madrid following Palma’s lead A controversial law effectively banning the holiday rental of almost all flats located in apartment blocks in Palma de Mallorca appears to have been having the results it was hoped for. Known as the Cort law, it’s the main point was that rental properties had to have a private entrance, something very few such flats does in the overcrowded Balearic city. The council that brought in the law last year said that the vast

majority of unregulated or illegal properties in the city were in apartment blocks. In addition these were often of sub-standard quality and inappropriate for foreigners who did not speak the language and suddenly found themselves in a building full of local residents. These type of rentals have now fallen significantly and Madrid is planning to bring in similar regulations.

It’s also one of the best large crossovers on sale, which is saying something given the strength of the competition. The interior is stylish and modern with neat details, plus it uses high quality materials, giving it an upmarket feel. It’s a huge improvement on the previous 3008. However, our pick of the range is the 1.6-litre BlueHDi 120PS with official economy of 70.6mpg. In real life you’re more likely to see around 55mpg which is still pretty good. It’s smooth, quiet and powerful enough for all kinds of driving, plus it is available with either a sixspeed manual or six-speed auto. On the road the 3008 impresses with its quiet cabin, neat handling and good ride quality. There’s plenty of traction despite the lack of an all-wheel drive version and body roll is well-controlled through corners. It’s also available with useful convenience features like adaptive cruise control that stops and starts in traffic jams. Peugeot has foregone the basic Access specification for the 3008, instead offering all cars with a generous level of standard

equipment including a fully-digital instrument binnacle, like the Audi Virtual Cockpit, plus a touchscreen with Android/Apple smartphone mirroring. Autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning are standard too. Prices are slightly higher than its rivals, but the extra money buys some worthwhile gear – particularly the beautiful, clear digital
instrument binnacle. The good level of equipment and stylish cabin make the 3008 stand out, plus driving dynamics and refinement are excellent.
Ford axes C-Max New car sales slump: Brexit and Grand C-Max and diesel uncertainty blamed Ford has confirmed that the C-Max and Grand C-Max models will be dropped from sale in a bid to save money as the brand concentrates on models in higher demand. The future has looked bleak for the slow-selling people carriers since the smaller B-Max was dropped from the range in 2017. Production of the two models - which are built in Germany will continue until the end of their intended life cycle in June 2019. They won’t be replaced as Ford intends to invest instead in ‘high margin’ vehicles such as estate, Active and ST versions of the Focus - all
of which are built at the Saarlouis plant. Ford has informed workers at its German factory that it will be dropping the night-shift as part of its latest cost-cutting measures, while 5000 jobs will be cut there and at its site in Cologne. The future is also looking
uncertain for the Mondeo - a car which is selling in decreasing numbers in Europe and is based on the US-market Ford Fusion. The manufacturer has already confirmed plans to stop selling the Fusion as it concentrates on trucks and SUVs in the USA.
The number of new cars registered in the UK last month fell by 3.4 per cent - with experts blaming uncertainty around Brexit and diesel car legislation. The figures released this morning by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders cover the month of March - when number plates change in the UK - and are seen as a key barometer of consumer confidence and the wider economy. Demand from private buyers was down by 2.8 per cent, while the business sector saw a huge drop of 44.8 per cent. In total, 458,054 cars were registered in March 2019. Almost every type of vehicle saw a drop in registrations, apart from small hatchbacks - which saw a rise in popularity by 4.3 per cent, taking a third of all registrations. Recent months have seen sales of new diesel
cars falling as this has continued, with new diesel registrations down 21.4 per cent. Demand for petrols grew by 5.1 per cent, while alternatively-fuelled cars (including electric vehicles) increased by 7.6 per cent. “March typically sees buyers rushing to dealerships to snag themselves cars with the latest plates so these subdued figures are somewhat surprising,” said James Fairclough, CEO of AA Cars. “The stark truth is that the uncertainty in Westminster continues to set the tone for consumer confidence
across the country - and with little clarity on what’s happening over the next couple of weeks, buyers are being decidedly cautious in paying for big ticket items.” Some of the biggest car manufacturers were hit hardest last month - with registrations of new Ford vehicles down by nearly 19 per cent, while Audi sales were down by more than 6 per cent. It’s not all bad news, though - budget brand Dacia saw a rise of 85 per cent, while MG saw demand grow by nearly 63 per cent with 1814 registrations.

Drop Quotes
Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Big music news this week, with the Rolling Stones forced to cancel their nine date tour because Mick Jagger, 75, needs heart surgery. The iconic singer, who follows a strict diet and exercise regime, is expected to make a complete recovery and be on stage by the summer, sources close to the star said. Heart valve replacement surgery has a 95 per cent success rate. Pictures of him relaxing on a Miami Beach Hotel balcony, showed a fit and smiling Jagger, obviously not

too concerned about his impending op. But those weren’t the pics that took my eye, as I was rather more drawn to a photo of his famously hard living bandmate Keith Richards, also relaxing on a balcony in the same hotel. Topless Richards, belly hanging over his sweat pants, unkempt hair, saggy body on show, beer in hand, wouldn’t have looked out of place in one of Blackpool’s less salubrious guest houses and nothing like the rock and roll legend he is ……. Someone needs to shoot that paparrazi!

Most people get a nice pressie or two on their ‘landmark’ birthdays, maybe a watch or a piece of jewellery, something to keep for future memories. However, if you’re the son of one of the best known US rap artists and your name is King and you’re about to turn 21, what are you going to get for your birthday? Well, it certainly won’t be a gold plated Sekonda watch, or a silver chain from H Samuel, that’s for certain. So, Sean Coombs, who used to
Anyone remember the Kenny Everett Sketch Show, back in the day, with its line-up of zany characters dreamed up by the ever so slightly loony host? If you do, then you will surely be familiar with his over the top actress/model, ‘Cupid Stunt’, who was a regular on the show. Everett appeared in a blonde wig and tacky drag, telling the audience about his forthcoming movie appearances, which normally entailed all his clothes falling off in the best possible taste and ended with himflamboyantly crossing his legs, with a parting line of “Stop ….. I’m giving away the plot!” Well, it seems that some movie directors are forced to take drastic measures to avoid their actors doing exactly the same thing. Take the Russo

Brothers for instance, who are the directing team behind The Avengers series of films. Joe Russo, speaking at a recent Avengers: Endgame Indian Anthem event, revealed the extreme lengths he and his brother take to stop Brit actor, Tom Holland, giving away plotlines for the new movie. ‘Yeah, Tom Holland does not get the script,’ said Joe, ‘he gets his lines and that’s it and he doesn’t even know who he’s acting opposite of.’ Even when filming begins, poor Tom can’t be trusted, ‘We’ll just use like very vague terms to describe to him what is happening in the scene, because he has a very difficult time keeping his mouth shut,’ said the director. So, if you want to keep a secret, don’t be a Cupid Stunt ….. Just keep Tom in the dark.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society Despite a warm atmosphere and clear skies, a strong blustery wind made life difficult for the eight competitors in El Plantio 2’s end of month medal competition. Overcoming the conditions was the least experienced member of the society, Maggie Edwards. Indeed the Edwards family nearly had a clean sweep with husband Brian claiming both nearest the pin prizes. Nearest the pins: Hole 4 and Hole 6, Brian Edwards. Second place – Handicap 7.2, Alistair
Montgo Golf Society 29th March On Friday March 29 blue sky greeted 34 Montgo players at Oliva Nova for a Stableford kindly sponsored by Nigel Siddall. Climbing back on the winner’s podium for the second time in three weeks was Sue Burman who chalked up a fine 37 points to pip Russ Peters by one shot, with vice-captain Gordon Gleeson also recording 36 points but failing dismally on countback. Nearest the pin winners were Russ on 16, Netherland’s Gerian Van 0oijen (11th) and Simon Fox (3rd), the latter two
sinking their drive efforts with a single putt. John Ross and Sue also included par three birdie shots. There were four competition guests: Germany’s Franz and SusannBudnick, Franz recording an excellent prize winning 37points from his 8.6 handicap while Hans and Susanne Duner represented Sweden. Richard Fox tipped the scales 4-3 against his sister in law,Stella Fox, to make progress in the Annual Knockout tournament. Next Friday is the Oliva Nova Cup medal competition sponsored by Oliva Nova.
Marina Alta Golf Society 1st April On Monday 1st April 2019, the wet weather over the Oliva Nova course during the previous night played a big part in reducing the number of players for the Marina Altea Golf Society game down to just 10 members and one guest because no buggies were allowed on the course. On a positive side it was not raining when the players teed off although there was a
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE With all the Internationals out of the way until Summer when we can look forward to the young England team carrying on the good work which has seen them score 5 goals in the last 2 games. The Premier League & the Alfaz Fantasy Football League was back to normal after the break when the 9 Premier games gave the Fantasy League a total of 20 goals, 6 clean sheets, only 17 yellow cards and for the 9th time this Season no red ones, mind you we did have a couple of own goals Spur’s Alderweireld handed Liverpool a get out of Jail Free card in injury time while the other own goal was scored by Wolves defender Coady who put the ball past his own keeper for the 3rd time this Season. At the top of the A.F.F.L. John’s team, Wee Aggies have had their advantage cut to 34 points by Linda’s Team Tapas. Barbra’s XI is just one point behind in 3rd place. Down at the foot of the table, Gary’s Upside Team have got his mates team for company
Chino’s All Stars who have been sliding down the League in the last few weeks. William & Henry have maintained their position at the top of our Junior League with a 14 point lead over Harley’s Ginger Ninjar. Olly F.C. is still well in contention in 3rd place. At the other end of the table, Fleetwood Gian is now 60 points adrift of Tom’s Real City. Linda’s Team Tapas have taken over the Summit in our Mark Carter Ladies Section all be it with a single point advantage above last week’s leaders Barbra’s XI. Liz’s Cookies Crew are still bottom but there is not much between them and Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans only 5 points. After being at the Summit of our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League for the last 14 weeks Bill’s team East Fifers have been replaced by Kevin’s Two for the Road who have a fragile 4 point lead. Kenny’s Albir Boro Army United stay in 3rd place while Nick’s Black Cats have clawed
their way back into the top 4. Rachel’s team Blue Murder have settled into the bottom spot and have been there for the last 3 weeks. Joe’s team Keith Lard F.C.continue to chase down Pauline’s Vodka Army at the top of our Champion of Champions League, at the moment the gap is only 18 points and with 8 weeks to go anything can happen. At the other end of the scale, Dave’s team The Hatters pulled a few points back on Leo’s Power Blueboys closing the gap to 23 points. We have 2 teams joint top scorers this week and they are Kevin’s One for the Road & Gary’s Hammered Again who both clocked up 45 points which qualifies them to go into our Monthly Wine Draw along with our lowest scoring team which was Steve’s Two Can Vam Dam
few showers around. In 1st place was John Cunningham playing off a 22 handicap and scored 36 points, also with 36 points and taking 2nd place on countback was David Reid with a 14 handicap. In 3rd place Paul Fraser with a handicap of 22 who scored 34 points. The talking score of the game was that played by David Reid on hole 7. He only took the prize for a two with a great eagle from about 150 meters out. Not an easy hole number 7 so well done Dave. Just to show his skill or is it luck, David’s approach shot on hole 16 fell short and landed in the water. He dropped a ball back where it crossed the hazard line and then chipped into the hole for a three!!.The other two of the day was won by Danny Herron on hole 11. NTP, saw David Reid pick up another prize on hole 3 while Gwynn Marson took the prize on hole 16. The Marina Alta Golf Society is a small but friendly group of players who play every Monday at the Oliva Nova course with first Tee time being about 10.40. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. Ian’s Tasty Toffees have romped away with our Manager of the Month for March which was sponsored by the Universal Lounge Bar in Albir who provide an excellent International Menu as well as having over 100 beers to select from. Ian’s team benefited from Everton’s upsurge in form which helped the Tasty Toffees to 199 points for the Month, finishing 15 points above The Chosen Ones. The 4th Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition took place last weekend. Our last Lady Manager standing Sharon’s team Rovers & Out made it
through to the last 8 when they scraped through beating Wayne team 3rd Time Lucky 20-18. Our two favourites made it through with Adam’s Quipo Sin Hombre beating Dump on a Tractor Boy while Darren’s King Carrakop 023 seeing off Tony Red’s Miles Platting Swifts. The closest tie was between Martin’s Marauders who just eased through beating Paul’s Foley’s Bar 22-21. The battle between our 2 lowest ranked teams was won by Henry’s Heroes who took out Kemp United. It’s getting squeaky bum time so it’s important to follow your teams run in by logging onto our website.

THE REAL DEAL
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says a fouryear refurbishment of the Bernabeu starting this summer will create the “best stadium in the world”. Perez revealed computerised images of the plans,

featuring a retractable roof, on Tuesday. The 81,000 capacity will be unchanged but Real will be able to play at the stadium while the work is carried out.
Perez said the club could “remain competitive in an increasingly difficult football scenario”. The enhanced venue will cover 66,000 square metres and feature leisure and entertainment facilities.
In addition to the retractable roof, there will be a 360-degree video scoreboard as well as a surround ‘skin’ of steel bands to allow images to be projected on to the exterior surface of the stadium.
SEMI-FINAL CLASHES
Despite some shocks along the way, this weekend´s FA Cup semi-finals will be all Premier League affairs, kicking-off tomorrow with a clash between two sides that appeared to be going out in the quarter-finals. Brighton and Hove Albion squeaked past Millwall in a penalty shoot-out, whilst Manchester City rallied late to get their win over Swansea. They meet at Wembley this Saturday at 6.30 pm(live on BBC 1), with Brighton hoping that Pep Guardiola´s side will be distract-

ed by Premier League and Champions League battles to come. Wolves scalped Manchester United to get their first FA Cup semi-final spot in recent years, and then did the Premier League dirty on the Red Devils at Molineux this week, to show they are in prime form for their Sunday clash against Watford, who disposed of Crystal Palace in the quarters. The match kicks-off at 5.00 pm (live on BT Sports2).
SECOND BEST AGAIN
Britain’s Adam Yates claimed his second runner-up spot in as many weeks at the Volta a Catalunya last weekend. The 26-year-old Mitchelton-Scott team rider, who

missed out by one second at the Tirreno-Adriatico, began the 143km final stage on Sunday, 14 seconds behind leader Miguel Angel
Lopez. Yates finished seventh in Barcelona but remained the same distance behind the Colombian. Italian Davide Formolo, of the Bora-Hansgrohe
team, claimed victory in the ascent up the 485m Creu d’Ordal, whilst Murcia´s Alejeandro Valverde had a seventh place finish on Sunday, but out of the overall top five standings.

TIGER ON A ROLL
The world´s most popular jump race, the Grand National, is staged at Aintree tomorrow afternoon, with 40 horses running over the famous course and fences, including last year´s winner, Tiger Roll(pictured left in 2018 eventually seeing off Pleasant Company). The National is run over nearly two full circuits of the course, and each runner will have to jump 30 fences to complete the race. The 172nd running of

the steeplechase could see the bookies taken to the cleaners if the narrow-priced hot favourite and defending champion, Tiger Roll, could emulate the legendary Red Rum by becoming the first horse to claim successive victories in 45 years. Last year, the nineyear-old held off Pleasant Company in an exciting photo finish, and if anything, Tiger Roll looks in even
better form this year, The consistent Anibale Fly, who finished fourth last year, is also seen as a good bet. . 40 runners and riders were declared yesterday, with any non-runners having to be declared by this Friday lunchtime, with reserves drafted in, if necessary. The Grand National offers a million pounds in prize money, and is scheduled to start at 6.15 pm(live on ITV).
