LOVE REVENGE

KILLING AN IRISH drugs dealer killed over a suspected “love triangle” was beaten to death before his body was dumped off the AP-7 motorway on the stretch between Benijófar and Algorfa in the Vega Baja region. The Guardia Civil found the remains of 38-year-old Carl Carr last week, some five months after he went “missing” from a Cabo Roig club, and arrested four suspects. Carr was one of three men

Ethical Investing

It is no longer just something for a few tree-hugging individuals In a world that is becoming more and more focused on the environment and ways to protect it, it is no wonder that I am being asked more and more about ethical investments.

Ethical investors were historically driven by their focus on doing what was best for the environment and communities and often this meant their investment could sometimes suffer. But times are changing and investing ethically can now be very rewarding. When a company owned by

Warren Buffett (one of the world’s most successful investors) bought a stake in BYD, then a little-known Chinese car company, some sceptics were ridiculing the 2008 deal. Car and Driver, an industry magazine, commented that it was “hard to take BYD seriously” because many of its cars seemed to be copies of older Japanese models, while their performance was lacklustre. “We drive faster in our driveways,” the magazine said. But Mr Buffettis now more than vindicated and the Chinese company’s focus on electric cars and climate-friendly motoring is delivering on the promise concealed in its acronym — Build Your Dreams. Its shares are trading at roughly 21 times forward earnings, or 2.5 times the ratio when Mr Buffett bought in. The deal stands as an example of how investing in renewable technologies can pay off and since 2008, BYD has become the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles.

Smoker dad loses custody THE Provincial Court in Cordoba has removed the custody rights of a father who “constantly” smoked cigarettes in front of his children when at home. The mother had made the appeal on the grounds of her children’s health, saying the smoke filled environment was not a fit place for the 13 and 10 year old to spend regular time. Another factor was that one of the children had to sleep in the smoke filled living room and that that father had made no effort to stop the habit or smoke

Train strikes called off!

GOOD news for anyone planning to travel to the Communities capital as the Metro strike that has hit Valcencia City has been called off, for the time being at least. A pre-agreement has been reached between the unions, the rail operator and Ministry of Public Works that Metro workers will receive a phased in wage increase, providing

there are improvements in productivity and efficiency. These targets will be partly helped by the introduction of new technologies and training. The strike has affected the network off and on for the last few weeks, causing disruption over peak times such as Christmas and the New Year.

Coffin dodgers

Police at the funeral home’s crematorium

POLICE are investigating a scam at a funeral home that may have netted millions of Euros for it’s perpetrators. They began the investigation after allegations from an employee at a funeraria based in Valladolid, a major firm who also have businesses in several other parts of Spain. They have been accused of removing bodies from expensive coffins chosen by the deceaseds family and moving them to cheaper ones. The casket is usually the most pricey part of a funeral service and can cost between €600 and €4,000. There has also been accusations that costly wreaths due to be destroyed in the cremation

The company have refused to answer formal questions from the press and have said in a separate statement that “the matter is in the hands of their lawyers”. In a further statement the firm has alleged that the accusations amount to a blackmail attempt by a former employee. The firm employ around 70 people across different municipalities and staff are said to be concerned about their futures.

PENSION PROTEST

Date by Simon Russell

THE TRIAL of 12 Catalan separatist leaders involved in a bid to secede from Spain will start this coming Tuesday in Madrid. Nine of the accused are charged with rebellion for their role in an illegal referendum in October 2017. They face up to 25 years in jail. In pre-trial detention for months, the nine were being transferred from Catalunya to prisons near Madrid last Friday. Supporters in Barcelona cheered them as they were taken away, waving the region’s red, yellow and blue separatist flag. Three others will also stand trial, accused of disobedience and misuse of public funds.

To pee or not to pee

Competitors in the Vuelta de Costa Blanca cycle race were forced to urinate on a Benidorm beach.

Residents of two apartment blocks in Benidorm have expressed their outrage at the lack of toilet facilities provided for events that take place on their beachfront. The situation was brought to light again last Sunday, when the final stage of the Vuelta de Costa Blanca cycle race began on the seafront promenade in the La Cala de Benidorm area of the resort, which sits at the southern end of Poniente Beach. The quiet, residential zone, is considered to be one of the more upmarket areas of Benidorm, with its wide beach, large villas and prestigious apartment buildings and is a popular starting point for sporting

events for cycling, running and triathlons. The complaints were registered by residents of theEmperatriz and Ulia buildings, which sit directly on the frontline overlooking the beach, where cyclists and spectators were preparing for the race. They witnessed a number of competitors in the race urinating on the beach as no portable toilet facilities were provided to cater for the event. A formal complaint from community president of ResidenciaUlia said, “We are tired of having to endure all the sporting events that are organised here and, now, we

have to witness this.” He lamented, in particular, the bad organisation of the event due to the lack of portable toilets provided for public use, compounded by the fact that many bars in this area of the resort are closed during the low, winter season. The lack of public toilet facilities in general is something which angers residents and business owners in most of the regions busy resorts. The situation worsens during the many cultural festivals, fiestas and sporting events which take place throughout the year, when bar owners are expected to open their toilets for use by non-customers, who often do not even buy a drink.

A 34-YEAR-old married bricklayer from Villena who exposed himself in front of an 18-year-old girl after following her from the IES Playa Flamenca college on the Orihuela Costa, has already paid dearly for his actions. The pervert, who worked close to the college, has been sacked, and faces a variety of possible charges, after masturbating in front of the teenager. Gang link to body in boot

POLICE are working on the theory that the gruesome discovery of an unidentified man’s body in the boot of a car in Alicante may be linked to ongoing drug gang wars in nearby Petrer. The vehicle was parked in the San

Gabriel area of Alicante City; police identified the car as one involved in a shoot out between two gangs in December and decided to search it. When they checked it over they

found the body, which has now been taken away for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death and hopefully give clues as to the man’s identity. In the December incident at least five men were involved, Spanish

and Colombians, of which two were wounded while one evaded capture. Investigation of this incident later led to the discovery of a cocaine laboratory in Petrer along with a cache of weapons. Three further people

were arrested as a result of this raid but police believed at the time that other gang members were still at large. The latest macabre discovery may well be a settling of scores according to police sources.

SPAIN clocked a sixth-record breaking year on the trot for foreign visitors, with 82.8 million tourists coming to the country last year. That was an increase of one point one per cent on the 2017 figures, according to the National Statistics Institute. Despite increased competition with price cutting from North Africa and Turkey, the Valencia region welcomed a record nine point two million foreign visitors, a annual rise of three point two per cent. Nationally, British tourists dominated with 18.5 million visiting Spain last year, but that was a fall of one point six per cent compared to 2017.

Acquitted after nine months in jail

Callosa rapists appear in court Two of the men accused of drugging and raping a young woman in an alleged gang rape on New Years Day, appeared in a Villajoyosa court last week, where samples of hair were taken for toxicology tests. The request was made by defence counsel for the men, as blood and urine samples were not taken by Guardia Civil investigating officers at the scene of their arrest. One of the two men who appeared, was the so called leader of the gang of four accused, whilst another, currently incarcerated in Villena Prison, has requested for the same test via his recently changed defence counsel. The two men, who were brought to court from Fontcalent Prison, appeared briefly, whilst the tests were conducted. Every inch of hair can reveal the consumption of drugs from a period of one month previous, therefore toxicological information

A judge in Alicante has absolved two men of their part in a vicious armed robbery for which they were previously convicted and had already served nine months in prison. They were originally found guilty of robbing a woman in Polop by ambushing her in her garage then beating her and threatening her with a gun. She was carrying €36,000 takings from a shop she ran in Benidorm, something the assailants seemed to be aware of.

by Simon Russell

After investigations the two men, aged 21 and 43, were arrested by the Guardia Civil. They were later charged with the theft and found guilty last year. However in the new appeal the judge has decreed that as the assailants were masked the identification was inconclusive. There was no other firm evidence linking the pair and they have been acquitted unconditionally.

Lost collie campaign

HUNDREDS of people have got behind a campaign to track down a border collie belonging to an award winning dog trainer. Oscar Murguia has been a six times champion of Spain in the pursuit and a European runner-up. He was returning from an event in l’Olleria (Valencia) with his six dogs but the collie, named Aruck, never made it home. Oscar said all six dogs were in secure cages on the back of his truck and it would have been

almost impossible for them to escape. He has his suspicions that the pure bred animal was stolen at one of the two stops he made between Valencia and his home in Alava. An award of €1,000 has been offered for information leading to Aruck’s whereabouts, and a Facebook page has been set up as well as the hashtag #unidosxaruck while Oscar has pledged to keep searching.

winds over the 80 kilometre mark. Fires were the main issue after the recent dry spell and several were reported across the Community. One close to Alicante saw the evacuation of several rural properties while Polop, Callosa d’En Sarria and Palma de Gandia

all reported incidents. Off Moraira a man had to be rescued in a small vessel that had been reported as missing at sea while in Castellon part of the front of a ogt bar was destroyed. Fortunately no-one was hurt although a dog had to be rescued and several cars were badly damaged. In Elche the giant Spanish

flag that flies over Avenida Estacion was ripped in half by the gale and had to be removed so it was not a threat to traffic. Overall more than 50 incidents involving the emergency services were reported, most of them minor but potentially hazardous events such as fallen trees and billboards.

A 24 year old youth has been arrested in Gandia after threatening to kill his mother in the family home. THE speed limit on most of the Valencian Communities roads that were previously 100 kmph has been reduced to 90 kmph from this week. The changes came into effect from 29 January and effects the National (N) roads in the Community, that is the N-332,

THERE have been numerous complaints in Alicante General Hospital about the food service on offer to patients while the kitchen is being rebuilt. While this work is being done food is being prepared and trucked in from the nearby Sant Joan Hospital. However there have been complaints that by the time it is served to the patients it is stone cold while soups and milk are still literally frozen in many cases. There have also been delays in the service, with

breakfast being up to two hours late and the main evening meal often not being served until 10.30pm. Furthermore there are some medical issues as some patients cannot take medicine until after a meal, and there have also been complaints about dirty bowls and cutlery. The hospital said they have made every effort to maintain a normal meal service for the 800 patients while the reformation work is ongoing.

Diverse bill for spring festival ORGANISERS have said that this year’s Spring Festival in Alicante is set to be the most diverse yet as the full billing starts to take shape. Music festival favourites Love of Lesbian are the current head-liners along with Fangoria and Rozalen. This week Nancys Rubias and Las Chillers both added their names to the event. The latter are a

relatively new band making their first live appearance in Alicante, while Nancys Rubias are an experienced glam-pop group with six studio albums under their belt and a string of hits here in Spain. The festival dates are the weekend of 24 to 25 May and the venue is the IFA building.

Homeless horror

POLICE are looking for two people who they believe were responsible for setting a car on fire, almost killing a homeless man who was sleeping in it. The incident happened on wasteland in Malaga in an area known for drug dealing. The car has long been abandoned and locals said that it was often used for selling and consuming drugs. Police are investigating possible links with trafficking

and the incident, which witnesses say was perpetrated by a couple who climbed through a fence. The 43 year old Spanish man in the car has second degree burns and is being treated in Carlos Haya Hospital. One of the key questions for the authorities will be if the people who lit the fire were aware that the injured man was in the car.

Decade in jail

New additions, Nancys Rubias.

A man has been sentenced to ten years in jail for the sexual abuse of his stepdaughter and a friend of hers in Elche. The case came to light after the girl, who was 13 at the time, was in the house with her friend. The accused touched the friend inappropriately and this incident triggered his stepdaughters decision to tell her mother, the man’s partner, about the historic abuse. She said that she had been forced

by Simon Russell

to have sex with him since she was seven years old. Her mother went to the police in April 2017 and this week the man pleaded guilty to the abuse in exchange for a reduction of his sentence from 16 years to 10. He has been in jail since the accusations were first made as bail was denied due to the seriousness of his offence.

Threat to kill his mother by Simon Russell

A 24 year old youth has been arrested in Gandia after threatening to kill his mother in the family home. Police on patrol nearby were called out to the scene after the emergency services had been notified. The man, a habitual drug user, had come to the house and began knocking over furniture and demanding money. He then grabbed

his mother by the throat and said he was going “to kill her with his bare hands”. Thankfully the woman managed to lock herself in a room and then called the police. Despite the assault she was reluctance to press charges against her son, but the police took the decision to arrest the man and start proceedings against him.

Drought fears return

Jurassic display

by Simon Russell

MANY people associate dry January with a period of abstinence after the festive season’s indulgences, but in the Valencian Community this year it has a more literal meaning as the region recorded it’s lowest rainfall in 70 years. The coast was particularly dry with parts of the coast around Valencia airport recording zero rainfall. In the Marina Alta precipitation was 90% lower than usual with Javea registering just 5 litres of rain per square metre over the month, the

sixth driest since 1950. Many towns had said that the exceptionally heavy rainfall in the last quarter of 2018 could almost guarantee water supplies through this year, although these predictions were not based on near drought conditions occurring. Heat-wise the month was warmer than usual, about 0.4 degrees above the average. The coldest temperature was -8 degrees in inland Valencia during the cold snap in early January.

THE Jurassic era is the theme for this years annual fossil, mineral and gem exhibition at Oliva over the weekend (9 and 10 February). The highlight for many will be the life size replica of that most famous of dinosaurs, the tyrannosaurus rex, which

is twelve meters long and 4 meters high. Councillor for Culture, Enric Escriva, said

that as usual there will be plenty to do for all the family, including the 20 or so exhibitors who have come from Exibition S p a i n 9th, 10th and other countries. February I t e m s Oliva for sale include rare

collectors pieces, precious stones and costume jewellery. There will be games and workshops for youngsters, much of it focused on dinosaurs and palaeontology. The venue is the Polivalent building at the southern end of the town and the opening hours are from 10am until 2 on Saturday then 4.30 until 9pm. On Sunday the doors open an hour later and close at 8pm.

Terra Mitica road death

A motorcycle rider has died after leaving the road close to Benidorm’s Terra Mitica theme park. He was on the N-332 at kilometre marker 145 by the park; witnesses said the driver appeared to swerve off the road for no apparent reason.

by Simon Russell

The incident happened at about 2.45 in the afternoon on Wednesday February 6th, the victim has not yet been identified. It is believed that he died on impact.

Double abuse case comes to trial

THE trial has started in Alicante’s Provincial Court of two men accused of sexually assaulting a female companion in 2015. A group of about six people, including the defendants and the victim, had been out to various clubs and bars in Alicante where large amounts of alcohol and other substances were taken over the evening. The prosecutor has detailed how the woman went to the house of one

by Simon Russell

of the men where she was forced to have sex. The other defendant then took the victim to her own home where he also abused her. The prosecutor has said that the woman was effectively unconscious from the substances she had taken and would have been unable to give consent. They have asked for a six year jail sentence if the defendants are found guilty.

IF you have been in a Spanish shopping centre recently, chances are it had an H&M, the Swedish clothing retailer that is very popular with British and Spanish shoppers alike. However, globally the business is going through difficult times and they have just announced that their net profit for 2018 was 22% down on the previous year. Their CEO Karl-Johan Persson said it had been a

demanding year, both for his firm and the industry in general. A 5% increase in turnover did not translate to increased profits meaning margins are very tight with internet competition having an impact, although 14.5% of H&M’s sales were online. Profits in Spanish stores went against the global trend, increasing by 2%. However as part of their overall restructuring the firm is still going ahead with plans to close six stores in Spain this year.

(Overseas Asset Declaration) – Legal or Not?

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management

The goal is to allow tax authorities to obtain a clearer understanding of financial assets held abroad by residents for tax purposes. The information sharing is primarily aimed at preventing tax evasion. How do I make sure I get my financial reporting right? There are ways to ease this reporting burden and to ensure you stay on the right side of the taxman, whilst also minimising your tax liabilities. One such way is to use a tax compliant investment bond.

Over the last few years I have come across many expats, not just British but Dutch, Belgian and German, who have said to me “I am not doing the Modelo 720 as the EU has ruled it is illegal and also because the Spanish authorities will never find out if I don’t declare.” Sadly, I have to tell them that they are wrong on both counts. The current situation – Legality of Modelo 720 On 15 February 2017, the European Commission accepted that Spain has the right to require residents to declare overseas assets. Located in the South West of India, this coastal state is the smallest of all of India, however, is one of the richest, producing much more in the economy than other larger states close by, a large part of which is contributed by tourism in the area. It is popular with tourists, and very much so with British tourists who flock to the areas of Candolim& Calangute, stretches of white sandy

beaches which offer tourists ample areas to sunbathe and a host of tasty beachside places in which to indulge in the local fayre – a favorite being Goan curry, a tasty blend of herbs and spices, which is usually served with fish and seafood, or can also be with chicken. This fabulous dish and many others can be sampled at Mackies Night Bazaar, a stretch of some 100 stalls offering trinkets, jewellery, silks and other traditional souvenirs and gift items, interspersed with mouth-watering traditional food and snacks whilst local live musicians play in the area too. Open between November and April and located along the banks of the River Baga, this area is also one of the most happening night spots. Of course, there is much more to Goa than simply great beaches, nightlife and food! Amongst the very many attractions in the area, one must-see is the Brahma Temple, one of the oldest temples located in the Carambolim area. The temple is located in a peaceful and green area which lends beautifully to the history of this centuries-old temple. A deeply religious area, there are temples also devoted to healing powers, to promote peace &

harmony – you are sure to find some spiritual peace when visiting them. Think carefully of when to plan your visit – best times to visit Goa are between November and March when the weather is at it s best, warm and balmy with ´ a cooling breeze. April to May are in the summertime when the temperatures rise, leading to the June – September Monsoon season. October temperatures are in keeping with those of April and towards the end returning to more enjoyable temperatures. Prices do not hugely reflect these seasons, as generally, Goa is a very economical place to visit, the biggest expense being the flight to get there, and of course, the all-important visa that must be obtained prior to departure. Bear in mind when booking that Goa also is home to huge celebrations and fiestas – whether you want to participate or avoid at all costs! It is a colourful and vibrant destination, so even when there are no fiestas planned, there is still sure to be a party going on somewhere!

I gave myself a chuckle over the weekend when I saw a Sunday Times article outlining contingency plans to ship the Queen and other senior royals out of London should riots hit the streets over a no-deal Brexit. There´s absolutely nothing new in this, as there have been plans in place for decades should nuclear bombs start cascading down on the UK, and not surprisingly the Brexit story has been denied by official sources. Well, they would say that, wouldn´t they? Originally, the Cold War plans were called “Operation Candid,” and involved the Queen being evacuated via the royal yacht Britannia in case of a Soviet attack.

As that ship was decommissioned in 1997, the strategy has since changed. The Sunday Times reports that, should there be violent crowds following a no-deal exit, the Queen and the Duke “would be moved out of London to a secret location,” though they did not disclose where. Bamboo clue to panda problems

The WWF emblems man-made problems go back further than people thought.

A performer dessed as an emperor.

BILLIONS of people welcomed in the Asian New Year across the continent this week as they said goodbye to the Dog and hello to the Year of the Pig. The biggest holiday in Asia, and especially China’s, calendar saw tens of millions of people crisscrossing countries to spend time with relatives. While in most states the New Year is a one to two day holiday in China

by Matthew Richards

the country closes for a whole week, partly as a nod to the vast distances may have to travel to be with family. As you would expect there were some lavish celebrations, with cities from Beijing to Seoul and Singapore putting on light shows, fireworks and wearing elaborate costumes. Although

to western ears the Pig may not sound like the most glamorous animal to mark such an occasion, in the Chinese zodiac it is a symbol of optimism, enthusiasm and hard work. There are also unexpected side effects as well, not least the surge in popularity of British cartoon character Peppa Pig across China with branded toys and clothing selling out across the country.

THE giant panda’s odd diet, a large creature “designed” as a meat eater that lives almost solely on bamboo, has long been blamed as one of the reasons why they have been facing extinction in the wild for so long. However recent research has thrown up some surprising discoveries that may help the iconic bears. It had been thought that panda’s added bamboo to their diet of about seven million years ago with it becoming their sole food about 2.5 million years ago. However, the new research shows the change could be very recent, maybe only about 5,000 years ago, a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms. This period marks the time when

by Simon Russell

humans first started making serious inroads into places and habitats they had never ventured into before and could be the reason for the change of diet, forced on the passive animals by lack of alternatives. Scientists have always puzzled about panda diets; they have a gut that is designed for an omnivorous diet and bamboo is notoriously difficult to gain the number of nutrients a creature of their size needs. They have to eat for at least 12 hours a day just to survive and as their only food choice becomes scarcer this is getting increasingly difficult.

Although abuse of children, astonishing admission particularly young boys, has long to reporters on been known to be a problem in his current the church the issue with nuns tour of has not been so high profile. However last year a bishop was arrested over the continued rape of a nun in his diocese and reports of similar cases have come from as far afield as Chile, Italy and parts of Africa. The Vatican’s women’s journal, Women-Church World, condemned the abuse, adding that many nuns had even been forced into aborting the children of supposedly celibate clerics.

POLICE in Lisbon have, not for the first time, been accused of institutionalised racism after videos of them assaulting residents in a predominantly ethnic neighbourhood of the Portuguese capital. Bairro da Jamaica has become home to many of the descendants of former African colonies of Portugal such as Angola and Mozambique. When they first moved over in the 1960s it was little more than a shanty town, but people that live there now regard it as a normal place to live and work with bars, offices and shopping areas much like the rest of Lisbon. However the area remains predominantly Afro-Caribbean and many Lisbon residents regard it as a no-go zone. Locals say this is unfair and indeed statistics show that crime rates are actually no higher than average for the city. The viral video

by Simon Russell

filmed last week shows police in Bairro da Jamaica beating, pushing and physically removing people after they were called out to an isolated incident, many of them women and children who were merely bystanders. This prompted a series of protests under the banner “stop racist police brutality” which in turn resorted in more police aggression, once again recorded and posted on-line. A community spokesman said that the Jamaica area is underfunded compared to the rest of Lisbon and when they complain people are treated as criminals. Lisbon Town Hall is reluctant to admit there is any racist problem with the city, which relies heavily on tourism; however recent incidents mean many would be forced to disagree with that assessment.

Fire fighters pump it up

Denia Parque fire crew with their fleet.

Teenager linked to brace of break-ins POLICE who arrested a 19 year old for the burglary of a bar in Denia have also linked him to a break-in at another bar the following day. Last week a landlady of one establishment called the local police saying that a man had broken a window, something that was witnessed by locals. The day after they had commenced their investigation they heard of another break-in, where â‚Ź400 had been stolen from the till of a bar in a dawn robbery. This was again witnessed and reported, and thanks to the witnesses descriptions they arrested the 19-year-old Spaniard on Monday. The police said that the young man has a long criminal record for similar offences.

A new pump will greatly help the firecrews at the Denia Parque station to increase their ability to fight forest fires. The pump, specially designed for forestry work, can carry 3,000 litres as opposed to the 2,000 litres capacity for standard engines. The new machine is part of purchases made by the Provincial Fire Brigade across Alicante which also includes five new trucks and two rural pumps. Just fewer than two million Euros has been budgeted for the new acquisitions across the province.

Noise abatement measures The Postbag having little impact

THE introduction of ZAS (Acoustically Saturated Zone) measures on Calle Loreto in Denia have had little or no impact a report has found. It also has dozens of terraces which are great for those eating and drinking into the small hours, especially in the summer months, but not so good for people living on the

Although the ZAS system has had little impact Denia Town Hall has said they will stick with the measures and are consulting with residents groups about the issues.

We have enough concerns about Brexit disinformation, without seeing a report that retirees in Spain could lose healthcare coverage, whilst the signals from the Spanish government tell a different story. Derek Brice, Javea. ED:- Two facts were presented on our front page last week. Firstly, that the UK government had published an official document stating that British retirees in the EU who had filled in the S1 form transferring health entitlements to where they were living “could” lose that right in the case of a no-deal Brexit at the end of March.

Calle Loreto, nice but noisy.

Light at the end of the sewage tunnel DENIA has pledged to address the issue of the estimated 10,000 homes in the town that are not connected to the mainline sewer network. 350 houses from the Montgo can now be connected after recent work and a further 1,500 in the Montgo and

Les Marines should be connected within a year. As well as the environmental concerns of houses that are dependent on septic tanks and similar waste disposal methods, the situation could also lead to fines from the European Union.

Clubs, Charities & Events

Secondly, we made it abundantly clear that the Spanish government, in stark contrast to other EU countries, wants to make sure that British retirees will be fine if things go pearshaped, and we repeated their intention to pass a Royal Decree guaranteeing expat rights this month.

Almost four decades of fighting fires

JAVEA’S Balcon al Mar Volunteers performed 2,700 hours of voluntary service last year, the majority of it helping out the town’s professional fire fighters on the many times they were needed. The group was first set up in 1981 to

carry out surveillance and emergency work, especially in the line of forest fires. Their commander, Briton Terry Curran said this week “we take care of Xabia because we feel it is our town, although we have not been born here” a nod to the

A forest fire prone area of scrub land and trees in Javea is set to be converted into a green area to rival the Pinosol if the latest town plans are followed through. 7 tips to eat your way to thicker, fuller hair

Did you know that what you eat affects your hair? That’s news to most people, especially those who are dealing with hair loss. While there are many possible causes for hair loss - stress, the environment, health problems - achieving thick, full and healthy hair ultimately starts with your diet. That’s because the nutrients you get from food and supplements provide the building blocks for your hair growth. Research shows that certain nutrients, including iron, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin C and omega-3s are essential to healthy-growing hair, while lack of these nutrients and certain inflammatory foods can lead to hair loss and slower-growing hair. Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Maria Marlowe has partnered with NIOXIN, the No. 1 globally selling salon brand for thicker, fullerlooking hair, to spread the word about how nutrition contributes to achieving a beautiful mane. Here are her best tips about what to eat and what to avoid - for optimal hair health.

of iron include clams, beans, lentils, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, oysters, grass-fed beef and bison.

Zinc

Zinc is involved in hair growth and keeps the oil glands around the hair shaft working properly. If you have dandruff, slow-growing hair or hair loss, low levels of zinc might be the culprit. To ensure you have enough in your diet, try oysters, white beans, chickpeas, red kidney beans, black beans, lentils and seeds.

B vitamins

Biotin is the most wellknown B vitamin that helps keep the hair thick and healthy. A deficiency can lead to hair loss. Additional B vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folate (B9) also

support healthy hair growth, as B vitamins create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles. Eat eggs, sweet potatoes, onions, pecans, almonds, tomatoes, carrots, grass-fed beef and avocado for a diet rich in B vitamins.

What to avoid: Sugar and high-glycemic foods

Sugar and high-glycemic foods produce inflammation in the body. They can lead to an increase in insulin, which creates more available DHT, a hormone that can cause hair follicle shrinkage and hair loss in both women and men. Avoid foods like sugar, bread, cereal, pasta, crackers, cookies, cake and candy.

Iron helps boost circulation and carries oxygen to your hair’s roots, which helps the hair grow faster and longer. An iron deficiency can lead to hair loss. Some good sources

7 signs that show, you´re not as healthy as you think

Let’s face it, we all feel tired and worn down by the trials and tribulations of life itself. But there are some red flags that many people write off as simply part and parcel of the human experience, when they could be something more serious. Take a note of the following, then, and if you see warning lights we recommend seeing a doctor.

Poor sleep pattern

Sleep is about getting allround rest, and is vital if you’re going to fend of illness. Often if we’re having difficulty nodding off it’s due to the amount of the hormone cortisol in our body, so basically try to de-stress before bed to combat this.

Apple-shape

Many people are carrying a few extra pounds around with them, but did you know one type of overweight is more dangerous than the other. Those with apple curves- more fat around their waist and belly- are at a higher risk of heart disease.

Constant exhaustion

This is particularly difficult to pin-point in the modern world because everything is so intense it’s any wonder we have any energy left, ever. However, if tiredness is becoming chronic then it might be worth checking it out- from thyroids to burnt out adrenal glands it could be a problem that needs to be addressed.

Dark urine throughout hypertension and heart failure. the day A heavy night’s boozing Incessant itching

will lead to some pretty nasty toilet trips, but your urine should really be as clear as possible, particularly later in the day. The darker it is the more dehydrated you are, so start by guzzling water, and if that doesn’t work look into it further.

Rashes and skin irritations are par for the course of doing many things in many situations, however it could be another important warning sign. Liver disease is incredibly hard to detect until it´s often too late, but excessive itching does occur in some sufferers.

Snoring

Cracked lips and corners of the mouth

Sleep apnea has gone from little-known condition to all-over-the-papers in the last couple of years, and the evidence isn’t up for discussion. Although snoring is usually benign, it can be the sign of this sleep disorder which could lead to

Cheilitis, or cracked lips, could mean you have a deficiency in B vitamins, with the lack of B12 a culprit in particular. This is pretty easy to rectify with supplements or a change of diet, including the use of more nutritional yeast where possible.

Why Wait? The aim of a Health Check is early detection of health problems whereby diagnosis may be possible before a person suffers or exhibits signs or symptoms of disease or illness. Early diagnosis often means simpler treatments and may even save your life. A complete health check starts with an extended consultation with a Practice Nurse who will review the patient’s medical history including family history. A lifestyle assessment is made and any particular health concerns discussed. Baseline measurements such as blood pressure, urine dipstick and BMI calculation will be recorded. Extensive blood tests will be taken at this first appointment including a full blood count, diabetes screening, cholesterol levels, liver, kidney and thyroid function. Gentleman will also be screened for prostate disease. The good news is that although these blood tests are extensive, it only involves one small needle!! Ladies (where appropriate) will be given a smear test and all patients

will have an E.C.G. ( heart trace). This will be read by our Consultant Cardiologist. Once all test results are available (usually within a week of the first appointment), the patient will have an extended consultation with our G.P. (family doctor) for physical examination and review of findings. If a patient was to have all of the above at separate intervals the overall cost would be 504 Euros. However, priced as a Complete Health Check the price is reduced to 298 Euros which is a significant saving! Still think 298 Euros is a lot to pay? Take a moment to stop and think….. During the last year: How

much have you spent to keep your car on the road? Maybe you’ve taken a holiday costing more than 298 Euros? How much you have spent on meals and drinks out? The more you think about it the more clear it becomes that 298 Euros is a great investment. Why wait until you have a heart attack or stroke to discover that your blood pressure and cholesterol are too high? Why wait until you have irreversible complications such as loss of vision, k i d n ey failure or

gangrene to discover that you are diabetic? Why wait until you’re experiencing distressing symptoms to discover that you have a life threatening illness? For some, a Complete Health Check will give you reassurance that all is well, but for those who are found to have a medical issue, a complete health check often means early diagnosis, reduced suffering and may even save your life.

Pets that prove imperfection is perfect

Despite the very harsh world that we live in, it is heartwarming to find people who choose to look beyond the imperfections. People who choose to see the beauty of a heart or the strength of a soul, instead of focusing on unattractive physical attributes that are just the surface. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these pets prove that every imperfection is actually perfect if you look it from the right perspective. There’s for example Venus the chimera cat (right), whose two sided face is actually beautiful and unique to see, and there are pets like the German Shepherd below who, despite being born without and we should learn from the way animals just accept his front legs, has been a them their joie de vivre and each other. fighter and an extremely outgoing furball from day one. The pets you will see in this post are happily and comfortably living with their qualities and defects,

RESALES DOMINATE

Property sales are continuing to rise in Spain, but the new home market as it relates to foreign buyers appears to be low across the country, according to a report in the El Confidencial newspaper. This means there is increasing competition among modern property developments, and this proliferation of choice may be one of the reasons why they don’t sell as quickly as before. Another factor is the rise in property prices, which due to limited land and growing construction costs, have increased significantly and more rapidly than those of resale homes. The latter are now seen to offer a lot more home for your money. Therefore there has been a notable shift towards resale properties in recent times, and especially in relation to

by Alex Trelinski

the pre-recession years, when over 60 per cent of all property transactions involving non-Spanish buyers were new. So, while demand is strong many experts worry about the lack of appetite for new homes. A greater worry is the added time and cost caused by building licences delays and maybe this is a frustration that potential buyers feel as well, prompting them to opt for the easier choice of a resale property ready to move into. The state of the overall market is healthy thanks to a revival of the domestic market and strong demand from especially Scandinavian, Belgian and French buyers, but resales are dominating.

HOME MORTGAGE RISE

Latest figures published by the Spanish ogt government last week show that the number of new mortgages registered in November rose by over 14 per cent, compared to the same month in 2017. Sales figures went up by under three per cent in November 2018, but

by Alex Trelinski

mortgages granted went up in 11 of Spain´s 17 regions, with seven of them up by around the 20 per cent mark. The average loan capital per mortgage during November was just over 130 thousand euros, some

five point five per cent higher over a year, and the highest monthly figure in almost a decade. In the first 11 months of 2018, there were 324 thousand mortgages on domestic home purchases, a rise of 11 per cent on the same period in the previous year.

Changing business

landscape

THERE are concerns that the growth of chain restaurants and franchises is altering the face of Valencia City, with one renowned local chef describing it as “starting to resemble Disneyland”. Two Michelin starred Valencian chef Ricard Camarena made the comment last week, referring to the growth of American chains such as McDonald´s, Burger King and Starbucks. These now seem to be on every corner of the city, replacing more

by Matthew Richards

traditional businesses and doing little for the look of Valencia as the primary colours so favoured by the fast food chains detract from the city skyline. However there has been something of a fightback, and while many tourists like the safety of going somewhere they know from home, others are looking for a taste of something more local.

One no, one yes - an apology and an invitation from Amata

Last weekend craft association Amata was forced to postpone the Craft Fair that they had built up in Pedreguer because the strong gusts of wind threatened to overthrow most of the stalls. The decision was made midmorning on Saturday when it was clear that the wind would not subside in the afternoon, nor on Sunday. By then it was too late to let everybody know of the cancellation and the organizers hope that all people who came in vain to the fair, will forgive them. Together with the fiesta commission and the Town Hall, they will plan another weekend to repeat the fair, but that will certainly be too late for all those who had planned to buy their loved ones an original hand made Valentine-present. Amata would like to invite all these people

to come to another of their fairs: the one they organise every Saturday and Sunday morning in the Port of Jávea. This weekly fair right on the seafront has over the last few years been established as one of the attractions of the Port of Jávea. After Christmas time the artisans have taken a short rest but from Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 February (in time for Valentine´s

day), they will be there again every weekend. This fair has its own site on Facebook (https://www.facebook. com/feriaartesaniajavea/) where you can find the last information, photographs and comments. The fair is also shown in Google Maps, again with photos: https:// goo.gl/maps/rx5uWDjHiYs (or look for Feria de Artesanía Xàbia).

Mayor Jose Chulvi (centre) and Juan Fontes at the press conference

AFTER the success of Javea’s first “Sea Weekend” nautical fair in 2017 it has been announced that the event is returning to the town’s calendar of events again this year. Mayor Chulvi gave a press conference last week outlining the details of the fair, which will be on April 13 and 14, the weekend before Easter and a time when many visitors will be coming to the town for Holy Week. Marina Nou Fontana manager Juan Fontes stressed that this is not

just a boat-show but that there will be activities for everyone. This year the venue has been changed to the Interior Marina and will be set up as a circular route for visitors. Over 30 companies will be exhibiting with possibly more to join later and the fair will be open from 10 am to 7 pm. Further details of the event will be carried in the “Weekender” closer to the start date.

2019 Kia E-Niro

Kia hopes it will put to rest the doubts of electric car sceptics – namely price, performance and range – more convincingly than any car since parent company Hyundai launched the mechanically similar Kona Electric in 2018. While the pair are closely related in terms of platform and powertrain, the Kia wraps its clever technology in a more conventionally-styled and more practical package. The all electric E-Niro looks very similar to its hybrid and plugin hybrid siblings, albeit with some subtle design changes. The new 17inch alloy wheels, fared-in grille and a sleeker front bumper. The rear features revised trim to match that at the front, too, helping contribute to a more aerodynamically efficient shape. Inside, it’s much the same as other Niro models. There’s a functional but rather plain looking dashboard, a slick infotainment system and enough room for five adults. Gone is the standard gear selector, with a rotary dial taking its place. This tweak opens up a little extra storage space.

It is an ideal place to stop for petrolheads who may be decamping to the Alps for a spot of spring skiing. It’s also ideal for a day trip from the UK, with the show halls just 10 minutes from the airport. Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Who’s been sleeping in my bed?

Taylor Swift had not actually moved into the house when the burglar broke in.

A man who took a nap in Taylor Swift’s bed has been sentenced to six months in jail. Roger Alvarado, 22, from Homestead, Florida, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to criminal contempt and attempted burglary according to a report in the Page Six Publication. Alvarado is believed to have used a ladder to climb through the window of the singer’s home before she had moved in. A neighbour is then

believed to have reported the incident on April 20 to police, who found Mr Alvarado in Swift’s bed after using her shower. Apparently, Alvarado, who has nearly finished his jail stint, plans to return to Florida to serve five years’ probation and complete a mental health programme. There was no comment from Ms Swift’s camp who couldn’t confirm whether the star decided to buy a new bedcover, or just keep the old one and ‘Shake it off!’

With Red Nose day just over a month away, it already appears that most viewers highlight of the night is sure to be a reunion of the cast from Four Weddings and a Funeral, twenty five years after the original movie stole everyone’s heart. Writer Richard Curtis has got the gang back together, along with director Mike Newell, for a special Red Nose Day sequel to the classic romcom. The 12 minute film comes after the success of the Love Actually short sequel made for Comic Relief in 2017 and reunites most of the original cast members.

Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell are back as Charles and Carrie and Fiona, played by Kristen Scott Thomas, all feature in the updated cast photo as is John Hannah as Matthew, Sophie Thompson (Lydia) and David Haig (Bernard). James Fleet is bringing Tom back to the fold, while Duckface, Henrietta, will be played once more by Anna Chancellor and finally, Rowan Atkinson is back as hapless priest Father Gerald. It’s a shame that Simon Cowell, won’t be around to play Gareth, but as he featured as the ‘funeral’ part of the film’s title, it would be a little hard to recreate.

Atlanta rapper is a Brit

American rapper, Savage 21, who has hit the top of both the Billboard Top 100 single and album charts in recent years, has hidden his British nationality from his fans and is about to be deported back to blighty. Real name, She’yaa Bin AbrahamJoseph, the 26 year old rapper has always claimed to have been born and bred in Atlanta, Georgia. However, when he was arrested last Sunday on charges of outstaying his US visa by thirteen years, Savage had to admit he was actually born in Plaistow, London and moved to America when he was seven years old. Since his arrest, confusion has surrounded the singer’s legitimate US status, until his lawyers released a statement a couple of days ago, which read, ‘Mr. Abraham-Joseph, like almost two million of his immigrant child peers, was left without immigration status as a young child with no way to fix his immigration status. These “Dreamers” come from all walks of life and every ethnicity. Mr. Abraham-Joseph has no criminal

convictions or charges under state or federal law and is free to seek relief from removal in immigration court. ICE provided incorrect information to the press when it claimed he had a criminal conviction. Mr. Abraham-Joseph has three US Citizen children, a lawful permanent resident mother and four siblings that are either US Citizens or lawful permanent residents. He has exceptionally strong ties in the United States, having lived here since he was in the first grade. Because of his length of residence in the United States and his immediate relatives, Mr. Abraham-Joseph is eligible to seek Cancellation of Removal from an Immigration Judge.’ Although he finds himself in the embarrassing position of denying his roots, it does seem that the rapper, who’s single ‘Rockstar’ with Post Malone and Album, I Am>I Was, both hit number one in the US actually is more at home over there and should be allowed to stay, though quite why anyone would want to live in ‘Trump’ton is beyond me.

Savage 21 has always claimed to be born in Atlanta, but actually moved from Britain aged seven.

Marina Alta Golf Society The Marina Alta Golf Society’s game at Oliva Nova on Monday 4th February 2019 attracted 2 ladies and 15 gents. Allmembers of the society who left their warm beds to attend the course for the usual Stableford game on a cold but dry morning. The morning soon warmed up and the members enjoyed a great day of golf. If truth be known the day was one of those days that you were glad you made the effort to enjoy the day outside. The course as expected was in fine shape as the members teed off a little behind schedule for reasons not told to us and the game ended up being a close to 5 hour round. In first place and playing off a 20 handicap was Denis McVeigh with a whooping score of 43

points, not been in the winner’s circle for a few weeks so boy he must have been on fire today. Well done. When asked for a comment, his reply was,“ just do a good write up for me”. I think 43 points is better than any write up. Second place went to Peter Gardiner who playing off a 22 handicap scored 38 points but no score on hole 17 cost him a better result. You must stay out of the trees Peter, oh and the water on this hole. In third place was David Reid with 36 points playing off a 15 handicap. His only comment was, steady play, steady play today. He then went off singing, “ I am sailing, I am sailing “ in recognition of his last week’s prizes at the CBYA winners awards, on land or sea, well done

Dave. There were two 2’s today both on hole 6, John Cunningham and Denis McVeigh for his 2nd prize of the day. Just two NTP prizes today, Andrew Brown on hole 3 while Peter Gardiner picked up his 2nd prize of the day for a 2 shot NTP on hole 18. The Marina Alta Golf Society plays every Monday at the Oliva Nova course. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. Anyone interested please contact Denis McVeigh at mcveigh1@hotmail.com or call tel 638401170 or Alan Tissington at alantissington@gmail.com or call tel 656831893.

Montgo Golf Society Today 1st February Montgo played a Stableford competition, our sponsor was Andrew Brown. The weather was a little mixed with some drizzle, sun& wind. We had 29 players out with including Andrew´s guest Tatiana Pakhomova. 1st with 37 points was Russ

Peters, 2nd on countback was George Braddick 36 points and 3rd was Gerian Van Ooijen 36 points. There were no two´s today. Nearest the pins were on the 3rd Celia Cronin, on the 16th Dennis Hammond and on the 5thhole 2nd shot we had a card draw, as there were 2 prizes,we split these and Jan

Jones& John Ross were the lucky winners. Oliva Nova have been doing some maintenance on the greens this did not however detract from the general quality of the course. Next week it is a 2 Person Texas Scramble sponsored by Sue Burman & Dennis Hammond.

Javea Green Round-Up The Javea Green Winter League are currently in 2nd slot on the League Table just behind Vistabella. They have had 4 matches thus far, losing 4-8 points away to Emerald Isle, then a stonking 12-0 win home to Bonalba. In their last two away matches they have drawn 6-6 to both Quesada and Benitachell. In the Federated 4’s

League, Javea Green have won all 3 matches played to date in 2019, 8-0 home to El Cid, 6-2 home to Bonalba and 6-2 home to BBC. They are currently top of the League Table, well done to all Players. The Northern League Squads of ‘Onyx’, ‘Opal’ and ‘Quartz’ are having mixed fortunes…… ONYX have won two

matches and lost two matches, they beat El Cid Swords at home by 8 points to 2 and sister squad JG Quartz at home also by 8-2, but they lost out by 2-8 points away to Bonalba Colts and went down by 4-6 points at home to JG Opal. OPAL are having a good start to 2019 having won all 4 matches played, 10-0 points home to BBC

Jaguars, 6-4 away to Finca Guila, 8-2 home to BBC Lions and finally they won away to JG Onyx by 6-4 points. QUARTZ have sadly not yet had a win in 2019, they went down 3-7 points away to El Cid Swords, 4-6 home to BBC Tigers, 2-8 away to JG Onyx and finally 4-6 points home to Bonalba Steeds.

Meanwhile in ‘The Healthy Lifestyle’ Mixed Winter Triples Competition at the end of Week 7 it is team ‘Manada De Lobos’ who are leading the pack with a magnificent 14 points and shots of 69, they are as yet unbeaten. Coming in second are ‘Chicachico’ who with 6 wins and 1 lost to their credit have 12 points with

shots of 78 to their name. The ‘Mavericks’ also have 12 points but shots of 74 see them in third place in the rankings. With only 2 more weeks of play it seems unlikely that ‘Manada de Lobos’ can be caught, though there is still a fight on for 2nd and 3rd places as ‘Chicachico’ and ‘Mavericks’ have to play each other in Week 9.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There was an abundance of goals & action in the full Premier League Mid-Week programme and the 9 Premier League games played at the Weekend which provided for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with a total of 52 goals, 10 clean sheets, 72 yellow cards and 2 red ones which was Crystal Palace’s Zaha and Everton’s Digne. The Referees were in a giving mood awarding 8 penalties all of which were converted. I was pleased to see Burnley were finally awarded a penalty which was scored by Barnes in injury time. Nick’s Black Cats had their tails up at the weekend when they closed the gap on the Leaders of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League John’s team Wee Aggies to 29

points. Andrew’s team Ballers slipped down to 3rd while Linda’s Team Tapas made good progress by moving up 2 places to 4th. At the other end of the table, there is no respite for Gary’s team Upside Team who are now 82 points away from Richard’s team Dunkrat. Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar have joined Olly F.C. at the top of the Junior League, both teams have a 5 point advantage over Joe’s aptly named team The Rafalution. Down at the foot of the table, Fleetwood Gian fell further behind Tom’s Real City, the distance now a formidable 35 points. We have new Leaders at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section Linda’s Team Tapas have taken over From Barbra’s XI who

had been top for the last 5 weeks. Down at the opposite end of the table Kim’s Ginger United climbed of the bottom spot and left Liz’s Cookies Crew trailing Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans by 15 points. Bill’s team East Fifers have been top of our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League for the last 8 weeks but they are now coming under serious pressure from Nick’s Black Cats who are now only 4 points away from the Summit. Kevin’s Two for the Road have moved back in contention thanks to his top marksmen Chelsea’s Hazard & Aguero who picked up 34 points between them last weekend. Gary’s Upside Team have landed into the bottom spot after failing to pick up any points

which has left them 5 points behind Liz’s Cookies Crew. Eric’s team Bootwinners were the top scoring team this week with a tally of 79 points which means they will go into the pot for our Monthly Wine Draw along with our lowest scoring team which was Trev’s Boys who only managed 8 points when the average score was over 40 points. The December winner was John’s Dodgy Dribblers. Our newly formed Champion of Champions League has been dominated by Pauline’s Vodka Army, Keith’s Max & Paddy have managed to reduce their advantage to only 16 points after collecting 74 points this week. At the other end Dave team The Hatters had a

good week and are now only 42 points away from Leo’s Power Blueboys. The new sponsor for Manager of the Month(February) is the Kasbrane in Albir who provide excellent food at reasonable prices along with a super view of the Albir Playa. The early contenders for this super meal for 2 is Eric’s Bootwinners who have a small 4 point lead over Nick’s Black Cats. Keith’s Max & Paddy are in 3rd place followed by 4 teams on 74 points. Winners,Blue Devils, Super Saints and Two Can Vam Dam. They are an experienced team themselves and they will be looking to put things right on the pitch after their opening defeat.” Ryan Elias, Wyn Jones and Dillon Lewis are the front-row replacements on the bench with Alun Wyn Jones and Ross Moriarty completing the forward contingent. Gareth Davies, Gareth Anscombe and Hallam Amos provide Wales’ backline cover.

COKANASIGA RETURNS TO ENGLAND SQUAD FOR FRANCE CLASH The Bath winger has recovered from a knee injury and replaces Mike Brown in the squad.

Elsewhere, back-rower Brad Shields is fit enough to be retained by in the squad for the second Guinness Six Nations game. Saracens second row Maro Itoje suffered a medial ligament tear in the 32-20 Round 1 win over Ireland in Dublin and will miss the next two matches, meaning Joe Launchbury or Courtney Lawes are likely to join George Kruis in the second row when Jones names his team on Friday morning. Prop Ellis Genge and Harry Williams, who came off the bench in Dublin, have not been retained by

Jones with Exeter‘s Ben Moon and Leicester Tigers‘ Dan Cole preferred as the front-row cover.

If England stick with the same XV that they went with against Ireland, Itoje’s enforced absence aside, that likely leaves competition between Shields and Nathan Hughes for the last forward spot on the bench, and a similar tussle between Cokanasiga and Chris Ashton for the 23 jersey. Manu Tuilagi – who made his first start for England since 2014 in Round 1 – impressed in Dublin and is in prime position to hold onto the No 12 shirt. -Cokanasiga made his England debut this autumn -The Bath winger has been out

Spain’s Sergio Garcia will face no further punishment following his disqualification from the Saudi International at the weekend for damaging several greens. Players in groups behind the 2017 US Masters winner on Saturday, including Patrick Reed, complained that Garcia had taken his frus-

tration out on several greens on the front nine during Saturday’s round at the Royal Greens course, leaving scuff marks and at least one large divot-like mark. Garcia, 39, was subject to a fine and potential suspension, but European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley

said that the “incident is over. We have dealt with it.” Garcia was called out for purposefully driving his clubs into the surface of the green and became the first player disqualified for “serious misconduct” in the history of the European Tour. “I respect the decision of my disqualification,” a statement from Garcia read.

“In frustration, I damaged a couple of greens, for which I apologise for, and I have informed my fellow players it will never happen again.” American Dustin Johnson saw off China’s Li Haotong to win the inaugural event on Sunday, with England’s Tom Lewis a further shot behind in third after a round of 65.

The fear of Max

Max Verstappen is the driver Lewis Hamilton “fears the most”, says Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Horner believes the Dutchman, 21, is ready to take the fight to Hamilton

by Neil Mortimer

and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in a title battle, should his Red Bull team prove competitive in 2019. Verstappen ogt finished fourth in the drivers’ cham-

pionship in 2019. “He has all the skills to take on Lewis or Sebastian or whoever it is,” said Horner. “I don’t think he lacks anything to take those guys on and he’s probably the

driver they fear the most.” Verstappen, who had an error-strewn start to last season, eventually won two races - in Austria and Mexico - and finished only two points behind third-placed Kimi Raikkonen.

Benidorm´s shock win

Benidorm CD lifted themselves out of the Preferente Group Four relegation zone with an unexpected one-nil win at play-off contenders CFI Alicante. They climb over Aspe who got thrashed five-nil at second-placed Hercules, whilst lacklustre CD Torrevieja are now second-bottom, going down two-nil at home to UD Ilicitana, with Benidorm now

looking to welcome Torrevieja this Sunday. The clash between playoff hopefuls saw in-form Villajoyosa CF win two-one at CD Almoradi, with Villajoyosa joining the Vega Baja side on 40 points, three points behind Hercules. Villajoyosa now have a tricky match against ever-im-

proving UD Horadada, who won one-nil at bottom side Villena, whilst Almoradi make the short journey to Redovan, who lost last Sunday´s derby clash at Rojales-based CD Thader, two-nil. Mid-table Thader travel to UD Ilicitana this weekend, whilst runaway leaders CF Intercity entertain Callosa, after winning four-one at promotion hopefuls Elda.

BRING ON FRANCE!

AFTER THEIR stunning win in Dublin last Saturday, Saracens lock Nick Isiekwe has been called up to the England Six Nations squad ahead of the clash against France at Twickenham this Sunday(kick-off 4.00 pm, live on ITV) to replace injured teammate Maro Itoje. England have been installed as favourites to win the Six Nations title following their 32-20 victory over reigning champions Ireland, but the

by Alex Trelinski

injury to the influencial Itoje will be a cause for concern for head coach Eddie Jones ahead of the French visit. A win on Sunday, as they look to avenge a poor result in Paris last year, will put England right in the driving seat, though Warren Gatland´s Welsh side may have something to say about that.

After coming back from the dead in the second half in Paris a week ago, Wales are odds-on to make it two wins out of two, when they go to lowly Italy tomorrow afternoon(kickoff 5.45 pm, live on ITV). All eyes will first be on Murrayfield, where Italy´s conquerors Scotland entertain an Ireland side(kick off 3.15 pm, live on BBC 1) looking to make amends for their shock defeat by England.
