Flight relief by Alex Trelinski

UNIONS representing Ryanair cabin crew in Spain scrapped this week´s one day strikes after reaching a preliminary agreement on contracts in the early hours of Wednesday morning. “This is a big achievement which contains guarantees stable employment and improves working conditions alongside the main issue; which is enforcing Spanish labour laws,” the SITCPLA and USO unions said in a statement. The low cost carrier had until this week refused to fall in line with Spain´s labour legislation, despite it striking deals with other countries. Ryanair suffered a number of strikes last year by pilots and cabin crew, forcing it to cancel hundreds of flights across Europe, after the airline recognised unions for the first time in 2017.

So, what exactly happened to the financial markets in 2018?? As we leave 2018 and reflect on some of the events……Harry and Megan’s big day! the UK heat wave, the FIFA World Cup……..one event that has not been so welcomed is the market volatility which we’ve experienced. Public Announcement from the publisher Marco Baiardo

Welcome back readers! After our well earned rest Team Weekender are firing all cylinders ready to kick start the new year off here

with an absolutely ram packed newspaper full of up to date news stories, some great features, the latest sports round up, and not to

mention the next 7 days TV listings together with the top picks weekly reviews. On a more sour note as the publisher of this newspaper I feel it is correct to make our readers and paying advertisers aware of the continued verbal attacks and a series of slanderous comments and false accusations made against me by a rival competitor The Euro Weekly News. After recently printing a article that was written without a named author, the publishers Michel and Steven Euesden are to be held accountable. The legal action was made in response at the Guardia Civil Villa Joyosa on 27 December 2018. Please take note of our journalist report by Alex Trelenski on page 4 and know that for now I would just like to make absolutely clear to the public that I will not allow this unfair and totally unprofessional

conduct to continue. Each time I, together with my family, have endured these verbal attacks from the owners of Euro Weekly newspaper a police report has been made. Until the court action has been fulfilled I ask every reader to ask themselves two questions, and they are “if someone wants to make a public accusation then would you not at least back it up with some proof or show that legal action is in place” and “why abuse the position of power being a publisher with a motive to damage and harm a competitor?”

Moving on to a much more positive set of events, during the festive holiday we have been busy painting and preparing the new Weekender South office in Benijofar. After having had more than 8 months of distribution across the South Alicante region the Weekender newspaper opens its doors in Benijofar with a local news desk office open to the public together with and a modern production studio. We welcome anyone who would like to tell us about an event or report a story to visit us. Both offices are open

to the public from 10am until 14.00 either our North Alicante office in Javea or now in South Benijofar. For any business owner you can drop by to discuss any requirements for advertising and receive a no obligation quote as well as the best advice for any size media campaign. Readers or Business Advertisers further information or comment please contact me direct on 634310665 or email marco@weekender.news Happy New Year !

A MATTER OF FACTS THE OWNER of the Weekender newspaper has issued a fresh denuncia against Euro Weekly co-owner Michel Euesden after a article published in her paper and on its website, stated that libel allegations had been “thrown out” by a Villajoyosa judge last month. Marco Baiardo had taken Euesden and her son, Benjamin Wickham, to court over allegedly libellous comments posted about him on social media, but Michel Euesden did not turn up at the courthouse, with Euesden´s legal representative producing medical evidence that she was not well enough to attend. A statement from Baiardo´s lawyers confirming that the judge had adjourned the case is printed below, and runs against what the Euro Weekly published in their December 27th edition, as well as on the internet. Baiardo´s additional denuncia over the article will be added to the rescheduled hearing. The full-page report, which did not have the name of a writer attached to it, had a bannerheadline of “EWN vindicated as case is thrown out”. Besides the fact that the case had not been dismissed, the legal action by Baiardo was not against the EWN, but personally against Michel Euesden and Benjamin Wickham. The article also printed

by Alex Trelinski

allegations against Baiardo, where he was accused of having broken a business deal with Michel Euesden and her husband Steven. No legal action was ever forthcoming over the alleged “broken deal”. “I´m merely looking for the truth to come out”, said Marco Baiardo.

“Weekender readers and advertisers have much more important things to read about and get involved with during 2019, but I need to make our position quite clear and to report the facts as opposed to disinformation, which is aimed at attacking my reputation and that of the newspaper”. BRIT KILLED IN BLACKSPOT CRASH by Alex Trelinski

A 71-YEAR-OLD British holidaymaker died on the notorious N 332 blackspot in Santa Pola on Sunday lunchtime, shortly after arriving with her family at Alicante-Elche airport for a New Year break. The woman, believed to be from Bedfordshire, died when the car she was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision

with another car on the N - 3 3 2 between at kilometre 82 between Santa Pola and La Marina. The N-332 stretch between Gran Alacant and La Marina has seen a succession of crashes and fatalities in recent years, as drivers undertake risky overtaking manoeuvres on the single carriageway route, which has one of

the highest accident levels in Alicante Province. The victim died instantly at the scene, whilst her 48-yearold daughter, who was driving their car, was airlifted in a critical condition to Alicante General Hospital, along with a 56-year-old man. Three other people from the two vehicles were taken by ambulance to hospitals in Elche and Alicante.

MIGRANT UPSURGE COASTGUARDS have rescued 325 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean into Spain during the first two days of 2019. The news comes just days after a charity rescue vessel carrying 311 mainly African migrants plucked off the coast of Libya docked in Spain, ending a traumatic journey which saw them spend Christmas at sea. A coastguard spokeswoman said they had rescued 111 migrants on Tuesday in the Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea. She added 214 more were rescued on Wednesday, and

coastguards were searching for another boat in distress. Spain has become Europe’s main entry point for migrants, overtaking Greece and Italy. According to the International Organization for Migration’s latest figures, more than 56,000 migrants arrived in Spain by sea from January 1 to December 19, 2018, and 769 died trying. The Spanish Committee for Refugee Aid says the number of victims is the highest since 2006.

First gender killing of 2019

A 26 year old woman from the Cantabrian town of Loredo became the first gender violence victim of the new year after she was stabbed by her 29 year old partner on 2 January. Unlike the majority of such tragedies there had been no previous reports of violent conduct and the accused man had no police record. A police spokesman said that the emergency services were called to a house in the town at about 4am and were unable to revive the victim, who had

been stabbed in the stomach. Her partner, an Ecuadorian national, later turned himself into the authorities and is awaiting charges. The dead woman was said to have been from the Dominican Republic and her family have been informed. Last year there were 47 murders officially classified as being gender related, that is women killed by partners or ex partners. As a result 39

THREE PEOPLE were killed and several were injured after an apartment block fire in Catalunya on Saturday. The blaze in Badalona, north of Barcelona, left one baby in critical condition and two adults in a serious condition. Another 13 people needed medical treatment. The fire occurred in a 10-storey apartment building, and one of those who died was a 92-year-old woman. Meanwhile on the same day, a fire 18 kilometres away in La Llagosta claimed the life of one person in a block of flats.

Body in a bag case commences

by Simon Russell

Photo: The accused at the opening hearing of his trial. THE trial has started in Valencia of a young man accused of killing his mother and disposing of her body by dismemberment. The alleged incident happened in 2011 and at the time the defendant told people that his 48-yearold mother had moved to Zaragoza to live. The accused is currently serving 23 years in prison for the attempted murder of two aunts and it was this that prompted investigators to

by Matthew Richards

question the whereabouts of his mother. In 2017, after several interviews, he confessed that he had cut her body up with a saw and disposed of it in rubbish sacks. His defence is that the pair had an argument and he pushed her to the floor where she hit her head and died, but he had never intended to harm her. Prosecutors note that he failed to

report the accident, withdrew €40,000 from his mothers’ bank account after her death, and has what has been described as a “psychopathic personality”. The case has been complicated by the time elapsed and that there is no corpse to determine the cause of death. Experts say that the remains are almost certainly in a landfill site somewhere and after this time will be at least 20 metres underground.

seriously hurt. On the same day, there was another unusual traffic incident after a woman was badly injured after being struck while walking on the A-3 in Valencia. It is not known at this stage why the 52-year-old was on foot on the motorway, which strictly prohibits pedestrians and cyclists.

Local film up for “Spanish Oscars” Photo: La Vall de Gallinera.

Village fighting to stay alive

A young Spaniard, Ismael Perdices, is behind a social media project that has so far involved over 200 people and has the potential to continue indefinitely. Based on the “Exquisite Corpse” surrealist style of writing and drawing first used a century ago, the technique collects words or images that people add on to the partial image or phrase they can see with the majority of the image being hidden. Designer Ismael, from Valencia, has adapted this to be used on Instagram and despite only starting

last month has seen works contributed from all over the world and over 5,000 followers of the project. In tribute to the inspiration for the idea, the 21st Century version is called “Your Exquisite Cadaver” and most of the technical techniques needed to put the works together are undertaken by Ismael. Anyone on Instagram can contribute, regardless of their skills, helping a mixture of people to unite their creativity, said the designer.

A film made and produced in Alicante has been nominated for a Goya award, commonly known as the Spanish Oscars. “El Olvido” by Xenia Gray and Cristina Vaello, is a short animated film about the bombing of Alicante’s Central Market during the Spanish Civil War. The bombing, in May 1938, killed more than 300 people, many of

them children, and is regarded as one of the major atrocities of the conflict. If you are in Alicante City tonight (Friday 11 January) you may be able to catch the final screening of the film in the Instituto de Cultura at 7.30pm. The Goya awards are in Sevilla on 2 February and will attract a global audience.

Many inland towns and villages in Alicante province have been struggling with depopulation in recent years as birth rates drop and youngsters choose to move to the coast where there is more work. However, the small municipality of La Vall de Gallinera is fighting back, taking advantage of its natural beauty and stunning setting to attract rural tourists and people looking for activity holidays. The town already has one advantage in that despite having a population of just 600

by Matthew Richards

it has 15 bars and restaurants, one for every 40 inhabitants which are among the highest per capita rates for hostelries in Spain. Much of these are kept alive by tourists such as hikers and mountain bikers looking to unwind after a day on the areas stunning mountain trails. As the activity holiday sector grows it is hoping that La Vall de Gallinera’s population will stabilize and eventually start climbing as local work opportunities attract new life to the area.

Police powerless

THE CSIF Union has made an official complaint about the constant power cuts that the National Police station is suffering from. On one day this week, the power was lost eight times, on some occasions for more than an hour. The union said that the situation is becoming “unbearable” for employees who are also

by Simon Russell

having to work without heating for much of the time in temperatures that are in single digits. DNI’s and passports are also processed at the station for Xativa and surrounding towns and the constant delays are causing a backlog of cases. The Union states that the

station needs a total reform and works promised two years ago by the Ministry of the Interior have yet to commence. Part of the problem appears to be that power hungry devices such as air conditioning and heating units are causing the electricity to trip, a situation likely to worsen as the weather gets colder.

Three Kings gaffe Caught in the act THE EX-SPAIN and Barcelona footballer Andres Iniesta has been slammed on social media for posting a picture during the Three Kings holiday last weekend which featured two “blacked-up” wise men. Iniesta currently plays in

Japan for Vissel Kobe, and the 34-year-old midfielder was back in Spain, sitting at the front of a group of 10 people taking part in the celebrations. Recent controversies in Spain over racism has seen

most municipalities take to stopping a “blacked-up” Balthasar getting involved in the parade of the Magi. Iniesta published the photo on his Instagram account on Sunday, triggering overwhelmingly negative reactions and calls to take it down.

POLICE in Elche hope that they have brought a recent spate of housebreaking to an end after arresting a man they caught trying to break into a remote property. The local police were called out to a farmhouse in Algoda after a neighbour saw two men acting suspiciously. When the police arrived they were

in the process of breaking a padlock to gain entry. The pair fled and while one was arrested his accomplice escaped. However, the police have a good description of the second perpetrator and are confident he will be tracked down; details have been

shared with other police forces. A vehicle close by, believed to belong to the thieves, contained tools suitable for break-ins as well as two bicycles and DIY equipment which is thought to have been stolen. The area around Elche has been averaging about two break-ins a day over the last few weeks.

The property was constructed in 1832 to help a family left homeless after the devastating earthquake of 1829, one of around 120 homes funded by the municipality at the time. This property, on Calle

by Simon Russell

La Reina, is the only one of the houses still standing and has been purchased by the town and retains many of its original features. These include the fireplace and stove, a small stable and the walls. It was at least another twenty years before social housing started being officially built in Spain.

The Almoradi earthquake, a tragedy which killed an estimated 200 people and destroyed much of the area, meant that an enlightened town council were well ahead of the rest of Spain, something which is recognized by the museum project. The opening will also coincide with the 190th anniversary of the 1829 quake.

Four men charged with New Year Callosa gang rape Another sexual assault on a woman, by a pack of young men, has shocked and angered residents of a MarinaBaixa town and drawn attention to the deep seated problems of macho violence in the country. More than three hundred citizens of Callosad’enSarria, gathered in the town square last Monday, to protest and express solidarity against ‘macho’ crimes on women. The latest, horrific attack on a nineteen year old woman, occurred in the town during the early hours of New Years Day. The victim, had been out celebrating, with the four accused men, all Spanish residents of Ecuadorian origin, aged 19, 21, 22 and 24. Sources close to the investigation told the Spanish press that the women was friends with one of the detainees. Guardia Civil officers were

by Andy Mansell

alerted by a relative of one of the men, who discovered the victim at around 13.00h, naked from waist down, in a basement room of a house in Callosa, with three of the men, one of whom was leaning against the girl, whilst another was pulling up his trousers. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim in a drunken state and possibly under the influence of drugs, as she was unable to recollect any memory of the previous hours. Given the serious nature of the situation, they immediately arrested the three men who were present, before rounding up the other suspect, who had left the apartment earlier. The victim, who complained of pains in her private parts, was rushed to the Marina Baixa Regional Hospital in La Vila Joiosa , where she was examined

by medical personnel and offered psychological care. She told the investigators that the group had been celebrating the new year in Benidorm, consuming drink after drink in a number of bars, before visiting an apartment of an acquaintance in the city, to drink further. Police believe the girl was drugged and the abuse began in this apartment as she had no memory of any events following. By the time, the group returned to a house party back in Callosa, the girl was unable to walk unaided, according to witnesses who have since come forward. The men took the victim, down to the basement, where the alleged abuse took place, with the girl unable to provide resistance. Officers, who confiscated mobile phones owned by the suspects, discovered a five minute video recording the multiple sexual assaults one one of the devices,

although it had not been posted to social media. The four suspects were arrested and appeared before the superior court of justice in Villayosa, where they were charged with a crime of sexual assault, two crimes of sexual abuse and a crime against privacy and detained without bail. Relatives of the detainees, who attended court proceedings, requested that the identities of the men remain anonymous, until the case comes to trial. However, photos and names of the four alleged rapists have circulated on facebook and other social media sites over the last few days, prompting claims of racism and bigotry. One of the four accused men had a previous history of gender violence, including abuse of a minor. In the past few days another young woman has come forward to claim, the 22 year old attempted a sexual assault on her last October, in his car, after offering her a lift into town. At the fifteen minute vigil, held outside the

Callosa Town Hall, earlier this week, Mayor, Pep Salva addressed the gathering, which included students from schools in the town. Representatives from other municipalities, plus regional and national figures and women against gender violence associations were also in attendance as the mayor condemned “clearly and decisively”, any form of male violence and promised psychological support for the victim. “ Sexist violence is a serious violation of human rights and a social problem of the first order that threatens the dignity and physical and moral integrity of women who suffer,” he said. Valencian President, XimoPuig , also released a statement, lamenting “a culture that still thinks that men have a right over women.” Investigating officers have requested a toxicology report on the victim, which could take up to two months, whilst prosecuting lawyer Francisco González Fernández, announced he will be requesting jail terms of at least 15 years for each of the alleged criminals.

Hospital worker sexually assaulted after shift Guardia Civil officers are on the hunt for two men who sexually assaulted a member of staff at the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa, when she was returning to her car at the end of a shift. The incident, which occurred, just after 22.00h last Monday, led to workers at the hospital calling an emergency meeting the following day, to demand more surveillance cameras and security staff at the facility. The woman, had begun her shift at 15.00h, when the designated car parks attached to the hospital were full to overflowing, forcing to leave her vehicle on one of the unlit access roads. When she returned to car in darkness, she was approached by two men, wearing crash helmets, who beat her several times, pushed her to the ground, stole her purse and attempted to assault her in a sexual manner. The victim was able to push the aggressors away and called 112 immediately to report the emergency. Shaken by the incident, the woman was treated by colleagues at the hospital and offered psychological counselling and was also able to identify a distinctive tattoo on one of the men.

Guardia officers are studying security footage from the building for more clues to the identity of the attackers. More than one hundred staff from the hospital gathered outside the building last Tuesday in protest and to condemn the unfortunate escalation of attacks on women. Members of the management team, joined them in a call for more police surveillance, and to offer support to the victim, who was technically still at work when the

incident happened. Hospital manager, Rosa Louis Cereceda, explained that the victim had no option other than to park on the side of an access road, some distance from the building, along with other members of staff and visitors, owing to a lack of parking facilities at the centre. She also confirmed that work on a new car park, with “perfect lighting and cameras,” was “about to start now,” and health officials would also call for extra police surveillance and better lighting on the hospital’s access roads.

Mum charged with abandonment POLICE have charged a 40-year-old Lithuanian woman with child abandonment after she left her two young children alone so she could go on a drinking session. The incident happened in Valencia and the police were first involved after they were called out to an altercation in a bar. The woman concerned was causing a disturbance after the barman had refused to serve her further alcohol. A witness at the bar said she may have left her children alone in her house and the police asked to inspect her property.

by Matthew Richards

Once there they found two young children, aged six and twelve, in an agitated state on their own in the house. The property was also in an unsuitable state, extremely messy and dirty with animal excrement on the floor. It is believed that the children had been on their own in the house from about 4.30pm to midnight; their mother was then charged with child abandonment and the children taken to a juvenile centre.

In theory this should be the last such rise as The Ministry of Public

Dry holiday weekend A small Alicante town had to manage without tap water over the holiday weekend after the pump that supplies the supply broke down. Residents of Encina, near Villena, were provided with water from it’s larger neighbour while the problem was investigated, although only enough for drinking and cooking. The village has encountered

similar problems before and even once the pump had been repaired water had to be rationed and checked for possible contamination. Due to the limited supplies from the town’s well, the mayor of Encina recently had to personally switch off the supply at certain times of the day to limit usage.

This is how the ant would plan its Spanish Wills Do you remember the fable of “the ant and the grasshopper”? We’re sure you do. The ant works hard day after day collecting grain for the cold winter. In the meantime, the grasshopper sings and dances around in the sun.

We’ve selected some of the most relevant aspects of this article (however, our recommendation is that you contact us at the bottom, by email, or phone, for further details):

“Why don’t you come and sing with me instead of working so hard,” said the grasshopper. “I’m carrying food to store it for the winter, you should do the same,” said the ant. “No worries, winter is still far away, I’ll keep singing” replied the ant. However, like everything in life, times passes, the summer goes by, and the cold winter arrives. The grasshopper realises that has nothing to eat and goes to the ant’s home, starving, to beg for food. The ant refuses. The grasshopper leaves looking down, dying of hunger, freezing.

Timeless Lesson This fable was written by Greek’s fabulist and storyteller Aesop, more than 2000 years ago. The moral of the story? Get prepared for the day of necessity, get prepared for the future. And applying for your Spanish wills now is precisely what the ant would have done: look into the future and get things ready beforehand.

BIG DEFEAT

LOOMS

UK PM Theresa May has said she is working on getting further assurances from the European Union so she can win the Commons vote on her Brexit deal. The PM said that after delaying the vote last month, there was “some further movement from the EU” at December’s European Council. She said further measures would be set out ahead of the vote, now set for this Tuesday, January 15th. However, the EU Commission has said there will be no renegotiation. A spokesman said “everything on the table has been approved and... the priority now is to await events” in the UK. Meanwhile, more than 200 MPs have

By having Spanish Wills you’ll not only be protecting yourself but your inheritors in addition. Let us explain.

Spanish Wills vs Foreign Wills So, would your country of origin’s Wills be valid? Yes, but activating this foreign document will be a much more complicated process, as there will be a number of actions involved such as legal arrangements and official translations. The inheritance process will almost certainly be much slower and more expensive compared to having Spanish wills.

Some important aspects you should keep in mind

Talks

In the Valencian Community, there is a €100.000 amount free of taxes for each inheritor The inheritance procedure must be done within 6 months. Otherwise, your inheritors could be fined by the tax office Without your Spanish Wills, your inheritors would need to apply for all the documents from your country of origin, such as the will and probate. Having Spanish wills is less expensive than activating your country of origin’s wills All your Spanish assets will be covered by your Spanish will

So what should you do? Only one thing: apply for your Spanish Wills in Spain. The process is very easy, and we can arrange it for

you at Sun Lawyers. We will make the appointment with a notary, will prepare the information that the Spanish Wills should contain, and we’ll also be with you for the signing of the wills. Having Spanish Wills is not something you will need according to the Spanish law. It’s recommended as your inheritors will be able to prove their right to your property and other assets in an easier way. Following the analogue, the ant was never forced to collect food for the winter, but when summer went by and cold hit, the ant was prepared for it. Would you like us to apply for your Spanish wills? Please send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We will get back to you shortly. Sun Lawyers is a Spanish law firm founded in 1985 with more than 30 years experience. The UK is due to leave the EU on March 29th whether the deal is passed by MPs or not, and with nothing expected to have changed amongst the minds of those who oppose the government deal, all eyes will turn to Downing Street after Tuesday to see what kind of plan B the Prime Minister has up her sleeve. Mrs May’s deal is facing opposition from many of her own MPs, as well as Labour and other opposition parties, and the parliamentary arithmetic simply does not stack up ahead of Tuesday´s vote.

Planet organic

THERE has been a dramatic rise in the organic produce sector in Valencia a new report has shown. The analysis by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries covered the period from 2003 to 2017 and shows that the number of dedicated organic producers in the region has gone from 986 to 3,013, a jump of 205%.

by Simon Russell

Although the sector has grown across Spain it has been particularly notable in the Valencian Community where almost 100,000 hectares in the region are now set aside for organic food production, four times the amount used in 2003. For various reasons, both

cultural and economic, Spain came relatively late to the organic food boom compared to much of Europe. However many small producers had already been producing food on an organic basis long before the term became widely used and they have now been able to take advantage of this fact to tap into the ever-growing sector.

No change for train fares IN contrast to the UK, where train fares are regularly increased at rates well above inflation, the Valencian Public Works Department has confirmed that there will be no price rises on the rail and TRAM networks this year. The pledge covers all Ferrocarrils services, the Alicante TAM and the Castellon TRAM. Reduced fares will also

by Matthew Richards

still be available for users of the TuiN card in Valencia, the 10 bonus system in Alicante and the Tarjeta Jove for under the 30s. Children under 10, pensioners, single parents, large families and the disabled will also all continue to receive discounts for travel.

(Overseas Asset Declaration) – Legal or Not?

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management

The goal is to allow tax authorities to obtain a clearer understanding of financial assets held abroad by residents for tax purposes. The information sharing is primarily aimed at preventing tax evasion. How do I make sure I get my financial reporting right? There are ways to ease this reporting burden and to ensure you stay on the right side of the taxman, whilst also minimising your tax liabilities. One such way is to use a tax compliant investment bond.

Over the last few years I have come across many expats, not just British but Dutch, Belgian and German, who have said to me “I am not doing the Modelo 720 as the EU has ruled it is illegal and also because the Spanish authorities will never find out if I don’t declare.” Sadly, I have to tell them that they are wrong on both counts. The current situation – Legality of Modelo 720 On 15 February 2017, the European Commission accepted that Spain has the right to require residents to declare overseas assets. New York, New York Fabulous to visit at any time of the year, New York is simply a place that has to be visited. First, it is an easy destination from Alicante. With good connecting flights, you can leave early in the morning and be in the city in time for a late lunch! There are also frequent deals on flights, meaning that it s ´ easier on the pocket than at any other time!

A minimum of 4 nights is needed, and even with 7, you can never, ever, take in all that this city

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons

has to offer in one go. Some choices need to be made before you head off – where to stay? Midtown Manhattan is the most popular, with the hotels around Times Square definitely comanding higher prices on the basis of their location. But is this value for money? The answer is probably yes, if it s your first visit. Times Square, ´ nearby 42nd Street and Broadway

are all in a mind-blowing hub of activity that cań t be described, you have to experience it. Once you arrive at JFK (a huge disappointment, frankly) you can make your way to your hotel by luxury limo, taxi or dollar-saving train/tram/subway connections. A taxi is around 80$, the train around 10$...your choice! For the foodie, what can we say? Its New York... Food is everywhere. The one thing you will never be is hungry! Search online for food recommendations, new openings, special offers, before choosing where you will eat. With an estimated 24,000 restaurants in Manhattan, it would take more than 22 years to eat at all of them, assuming 3 meals a day in a different place each time. With around 5 nights, you better do some research to try the best!

Happy Hour apps can also help you find a reasonable priced refreshment, although sometimes just wandering around the neighbourhood can do the same – lots of bars have rooftop gardens and elegant terraces to allow you to escape the noise and bustle of the street. A great way to see the city are the hop-on hop-off buses. There are many on offer, usually including a boat trip, a nightime trip to Brooklyn and maybe another to Harlem. Once you have completed the tour, these buses are great ways of moving around Manhattan instead of a taxi (notoriously difficult) or the underground. Research where you want to visit – sometimes you have to pre-book tickets to enter various attracions, or simply to allow you to skip the queue. Many of Manhattans attractions are free to the public, so make sure you know your stuff! What to wear? Good Shoes for walking is our best tip! You just doń t realise how many steps you will do (get your app or FitBit to start recording). An average of 15 Kilometers a day, easily and you doń t even realise that you have done it. A simply walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (iconic must-do) takes about 45 – 60 mins. And then you have to return! No matter how you plan it, I guarantee you will come away wishing you had had time to visit this, or to see more of that....

No place for a child

IN probably one of the most by Matthew Richards depressing lists looking back at 2018, Unicef has published countries poverty and abuse are a report on the worst places in common places. “For too long

Photo: A doctor measures the arm of Yemeni Ali Mohammed Ahmed Jamal, 12, who is suffering from malnutrition

the world to be a child. The document makes for troubled reading and as well as countries which are at war, rape, child marriage and abductions are on the increase. In war zones rather than being protected, children are being used as human shields and recruited to join armed forces on all sides say the charity. Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iraq, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and the Central African Republic were all singled out but even in “civilised”

parties in conflict have been committing atrocities against children with near total impunity and it is only getting worse.” said a Unicef spokesman. In Afghanistan, 5,000 children were killed or maimed in the first nine months of 2018 alone, 90% of the total civilian toll. In Iraq, though fighting has abated recently, thousands of families remain homeless in the middle of winter while in Niger the schooling system is all but closed due to poverty and violence. However, Unicef is working across these countries and achieving some results although it seems as soon as one conflict ends another one starts somewhere on the globe, with the most innocent often the worst affected.

Escape room tragedy prompts closures

Deadly weather sweeps across Europe

Photo: Battling the weather in Europe.

AS the Costa Blanca currently experiences its first proper cold spell of the winter, spare a thought for much of the rest of Europe, which has been blasted by a huge cold spell responsible for killing at least 12 people. Four skiers died in Norway as a kilometre wide avalanche near Tromso wiped out everything in its path, triggered by huge snowfalls. There have also been avalanche fatalities in Switzerland, Austria and Germany as well as several road deaths blamed on the weather conditions. The snow has also caused extensive travel chaos with airports in the Netherlands and Slovakia, both

by Simon Russell

countries generally geared up for heavy snow, being forced to close. Many roads remain impassable and across the continent, drivers are being advised to only make essential journeys. The bad weather has even made it down to parts of the Med, with hundreds of schools closing in Greece due to driving blizzards. These conditions tend to put a Costa Blanca cold spell into perspective, so maybe we should just throw another log on the fire and count our blessings - and remember that spring will be here before we know it.

Iguanas coming back home

Photo: Authorities at the scene of the tragedy.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with unintentional manslaughter after four teenage girls died in a fire in an escape room in Poland this week. For those not familiar with the concept, escape rooms are where a group of people are locked inside space and have to find ways to get out while experiencing live-action scenes, often designed to frighten or unsettle the players. In this instance that would have seemed to include fire, which appears to have got out of control trapping the victims who died of carbon monoxide poisoning before the fire brigade could reach them. The four girls were said to be good friends, all in the same class at

by Simon Russell

a school in Koszalin, the town where the tragedy happened. The incident prompted immediate checks by Polish authorities on the countries 178 registered rooms, worryingly finding that 129 did not meet health and safety standards and resulting in 13 of them being immediately closed. Escape rooms started in the US, as so many of these things do, but have spread worldwide in a short time. They are particularly popular with the millennial generation and older teenagers who are looking in increasing numbers for activities other than pubs and clubs.

LAND iguanas are being reintroduced to a Galapagos island almost 200 years after they were last seen there. The last official sighting of the creatures was actually by renowned naturalist Charles Darwin on his famous Beagle voyage back in 1835. However, the iguanas were already endangered even back then after feral pigs introduced by man had nearly wiped the docile animals out, something that happened completely just a few years later. Now 1,400 iguanas from a nearby isle have been released onto Santiago

Island as part of an ecological restoration programme. The pigs in question were confirmed as being eradicated in 2001, paving the way for the reintroduction of the native creature. The incident was one of the first showing the damage that man could do to native flora and fauna, either with their own hunting or by introducing new animals that are able to prey on others that previously had no native enemies. However probably the most famous, the extinction of the dodo, occurred around 200 years earlier.

Poseidon Playa top floor fire drama by Andy Mansell

Photo: The fire started in a bedroom on the top floor of the hotel.

Climber dies after fall

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and 200 guests were evacuated, following a fire on the seventeenth floor of a Benidorm beachfront hotel, last week. The incident at the three-star rated, Hotel Poseidon Playa, situated on the resort’s Poniente beach, occurred around two o clock in the afternoon, when many of the guests were eating lunch or relaxing in their rooms. A faulty boiler is thought to have been the cause of the fire, which began in a bedroom and spread quickly to the rest of the highest floor of the building. Occupants of the room were able to escape on foot, along with other guests from adjoining bedrooms, whilst an alarm was raised to alert other occupants and members of staff. Three fire tenders from the Benidorm station were dispatched to the scene along with local police officers, who quickly issued an evacuation order for the building, which was full of tourists enjoying their Christmas and New Year holidays.

Using a stair ladder attached to one of the tenders and heavy pumps, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within an hour, without injury to guests. The CICU, centre for coordination of medical emergencies, confirmed that two firefighters and two members of staff were transferred to a clinic in Benidorm, where they received

treatment, after inhaling intense smoke caused by the fire, however, none were seriously injured. The evacuated holidaymakers were allowed back into the building around 16.30h and were able to return to their bedrooms, apart from those in rooms on the seventeenth floor, who were moved to alternative accommodation in the hotel.

Loneliness a problem for The stbag o P British abroad THE majority of Javea residents officially identified as being at serious risk of being isolated from society are British, a report by the town’s Social Services Department has found. The report was part of the summary of the inaugural year of the Radar Programme, designed to ease the problems caused by loneliness and isolation. The list of those affected was compiled using information from the Local Police, Health Service and Red Cross and nearly all those identified were foreign residents. The Radar Programme is looking for volunteers to help with the mainly elderly people affected, many of whom lack family support and speak little Spanish. Home help, food delivery as well as financial and legal assistance are just some of the initiatives Radar is starting to arrange, personalised by individual need. For more information on their work or if you are considering volunteering you can contact the group by e-mail on radarseniors@xabia.es or on 965 794 142.

Addressing the parking problem XALO Town Council have confirmed the opening of three new parking areas, bringing about 100 much needed new spaces to the Marina Alta town. This is part of the long term plans to ease traffic congestion in the town centre and improve conditions for pedestrians. The new parking areas are opposite the Centro de Salud, which has 20 spaces, next to the Riurau

Restaurant, which has the same number and on Avenida Juan Monterell which will have parking for just under 60 vehicles. This will bring the total of parking areas outside the town centre to seven and it is hoped that most drivers will now park on the outskirts of town and walk in rather than try and stop in the town centre.

Graham Andrews, La Zenia. 2019 will see local elections come May, but where will Brits registered to vote over here stand as the Brexit problems continue? I did go to my town hall to make sure that I was still qualified to vote for my council. I noticed that pretty much every shop in my area was closed last Sunday, which is fair enough as it was Three Kings Day, but that is merely a preview of what is going to happen over most of the next six months, thanks to the Valencian government. Last year Valencia bosses decided to scrap Sunday shopping between January and mid-June, barring Easter, and this move makes no sense at all. On the one hand we have the politicians carping on about needing every penny they can get from tourists, and then they(and the locals) have to put up with this draconian measure once again after last year´s enforced closures. Can anybody please tell me the logic of all of this? If there is to be no Sunday opening at all, then fair enough, and I get that. But why have this six months on, six months off approach? Where I live (across the road from the big Zenia Boulevard shopping centre), I will just drive for 20 minutes south into the Murcia region, where it is Sunday business as normal. What a farce!

Three Kings Celebration at Per Ells day care centre in Turis.

In early January, most Spanish children look forward to the arrival of the Three Kings (or Tres Reyes) who are far more important than Father Christmas, as these are the gift bringers that the children most want to see. None look forward more eagerly than the children of the Per Ells day care centre in Turis. Fortunately for them, this event has been sponsored by the local Freemason’s White River Lodge for the past nine years. Each year two or three Masons dress up as Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar and make the journey to the day care centre to give the children a treat. The centre currently caters for around twenty severely disabled children who are able to attend, usually on a daily basis; this allows them to meet with other children and also gives their parents a short respite from their children’s constant care needs. As is often the case, the centre receives almost no money from the local authorities and relies almost entirely on volunteers and charitable donations. Over the past nine

years the Freemasons have done a great deal to make the children’s lives a little easier both by making donations and giving up their time to help whenever possible. The centre also has a nearby garden centre which has been adapted so that up to ten children can visit and stay overnight or even, in some cases, for a weekend which gives them a much needed break from their daily routine. Originally this building was unable to be used as there was no electricity to provide power, light and heating. However, a generator was sourced and the local Masons supplied, and had installed, all of the electrical cabling necessary to turn this previously unused building into a useful extra facility. On Sunday, 6th January, over fifty parents and guests arrived to join in the fun and the children were very excited. They became even more excited as the Three Kings arrived and filed into the assembly hall ready to greet them. The Three Kings took their places at the front and one by one the children came up to meet them to be

given a small gift, some sweets and often a big hug as well. It was both humbling and motivating to see how these children reacted and it is obvious that they are very well looked after and loved by the carers at the centre, many of whom are the parents of the disabled children. The centre was originally built and donated by a former owner of the Valencian Football Club and is now a much used feature in the town of Turis. The Masons of the White River Lodge have done a fantastic job in continuing that tradition and the children’s lives are a little better for it. We were again joined on our visit by Ms Jackie Moore who kindly acted as both liaison and translator and we are very grateful to her for giving up her time to help us. If you wish to help Per Ells they are always grateful for any donation and you may feel free to approach them directly. Fiery start to Triple rescue from Three Kings the Moraig

by Simon Russell

THE morning of the Three Kings day proved to be less than relaxing for the residents of 24 flats who had to be evacuated after a fire broke out on Avenida del Marquesat in Denia. The fourthfloor blaze was first reported at about 9.30am and many people

in the affected block didn’t even have time to change out of their dressing gowns and pyjamas before being forced to flee the apartment block. The local fire brigade was quickly on the scene and was able to extinguish the fire, although the flat where it originated was said to be very badly damaged.

A diving instructor has been criticized for taking a pair of novice divers out in unsuitable conditions, prompting a dramatic rescue mission at the Cala del Moraig in Benitatxell. The unnamed instructor and two young Russians got into difficulty and found the waves were too strong for them to leave the cave they had entered. Eventually they managed to make their way to a small beach and nearby tourists alerted the authorities after seeing they were clearly in difficulty and unable to leave the beach. The Guardia Civil launched

by Simon Russell

their inflatable Zodiac rescue craft from Moraira and managed to get one of the Russian men on board, an operation made difficult by the weight of the diving equipment and the man’s exhaustion. A pleasure craft was able to help the other divers; a Guardia spokesman said that all three had got into extreme difficulty and were lucky to be alive. The instructor is said to be inexperienced and may be facing criminal charges or sanctions against future Photo: Police at Cala del Moraig. teaching.

Trial for over 50 burglaries

THE trial started this week of four people accused of being involved in more than 50 house robberies in and around Javea, dating back to 2011. Two of the four are accused of carrying out the thefts while the other two, the partner and mother of

one of the accused, have been charged with receiving the stolen items. The prosecutor has asked for prisons sentences ranging from five to nine years for the group who have also been charged with belonging to a criminal gang and reckless driving.

Fire friendly forestry WORK has started on thinning out the dense pine trees covering the Serra d’Olta in Calpe, a task required to reduce the risk of forest fires. The Diputacion de Alicante has given a grant of €40,000 for the work which is scheduled to take three months. The council have said the aim is to make

the trees more evenly spaced, reducing the risks of fire starting and, in the event they do break out, making it harder for them to spread. The quick growing pines have also prevented the growth of other native species such as carobs, olives and oaks.

accident that had caused the death which follows on from a similar incident in the autumn. Media Ambient has appealed for help from any members of the public who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour at the marshes on Sunday or Monday this week.

JAVEA’S Mayor, Jose Chulvi, has expressed his relief that the town has agreed on the terms of a purchase of private land that is needed to allow the works on Avenida Juan Carlos I to finally proceed. He signed the paperwork confirming the €22,186 payment for the 126m2 patch of land that had held up the works, mainly on the pedestrian

area. Money has been set aside in the municipal budget and, as soon as the payment is made and final documentation signed, the process of tendering the work should start soon after. The mayor said, “today we have unblocked a situation that has been dragging on for many years.”

Teenager charged with theft

A 19 year old Spanish national has been arrested and charged with theft and assault after an incident outside a nightclub in Denia. The victim, a 26-year-old Moroccan man, had just been to a cash point and was meeting a friend at the club. However, it is alleged he was attacked by the

accused who threw him to the ground and stole €700 in cash before running off. The incident was reported and the investigation led to the arrest of the younger man this week; the authorities say he has a lengthy criminal record for similar incidents.

AFTER complaints by local residents about the noise from certain bars on Javea’s Arenal, a report from the Ombudsman has found that many of them did not have the necessary licences. The area causing complaints is the southern end of the Arenal, Javea’s busiest area which attracts party goers throughout the summer. Many of the bars that have been complained about have music both inside and outside, including live bands. However, the report found that the majority only had licences to operate as bars, restaurants, lounges or a combination of all three.

Hostelries are supposed to have a music licence for the interior and a separate one for music on their terraces, the main cause of noise complaint by the locals. However many of them are finishing their dinner sittings and effectively turning into discos during the small hours as people congregate outside. The City Council has now indicated it is willing to act on the issue. Solutions could include the closure of unlicensed premises, increased police presence, a crackdown on “botellon” outside drinking parties and scientific monitoring of noise levels.

Chlamydia – the “silent STI” Some sexually transmitted infections have no symptoms so it’s often impossible to tell if the person you’re having sex with has one. It’s also important to remember that condoms don’t cover all the genital skin, and you CAN catch an STI via unprotected oral sex, despite what you may believe.

It’s recommended by government health bodies that sexually active people should get themselves tested for STIs once per year, and more often if they have had unprotected sex with more than one person. Chlamydia often goes unnoticed as most people don’t experience symptoms

until the infection has taken hold and is starting to cause real damage. Untreated chlamydia infection can lead to fertility problems in both men and women, pain when passing urine in both men and women, and penile discharge in men. Interestingly, did you know that you can catch Chlamydia of the throat from unprotected Oral sex (without a condom or dental dam)?

Don’t leave this to play on your mind, call the Sexual Health Adviser at our clinic now. We have various special offers which combine testing for different infections and our specialist can advise on the best package for your personal circumstances. Call now to discuss these with her. Vanessa, our Sexual Health Adviser also offers a service called Contact Tracing, where she will advise your sexual partners to get themselves tested for STIs if you’ve tested positive for a sexually transmitted

infection. This saves you the embarrassment or awkwardness of telling your partners yourself. The service is completely anonymous and she will never give out your details or anything which can be traced back to you. Vanessa is knowledgable, friendly, and very openminded. She takes the confidentiality surrounding her speciality extremely seriously so you can be rest-assured that anything you discuss with her will stay just between the two of you.

Winter warning − what to do for your pets this season

When temperatures drop, humans know to bundle up and avoid excess time outdoors. The same approach should be taken when it comes to pets. They may be covered by cozy fur coats, but not all of those coats are created equally. During the winter, it is recommended keeping an eye out for the initial signs of hypothermia, such as skin that’s cold to the touch, pale skin and gums, intense shivering and lethargy. Outdoor access: Limit walks in extreme cold weather a n d

monitor your pet’s behaviour for signs of stress or discomfort. Never leave a pet outside during a winter storm. Do not let your dog off its lead after snowfall. Snow masks familiar scents and your pet may become lost and disoriented. Chemical hazards: Snow-melting products like deicers, antifreeze and salt can cause skin irritations and, if ingested, can be fatal. If you live in an area where these products are used, it’s important to thoroughly rinse your pet’s paws and belly after a walk. Adding extra layers: If your pet is small a n d shorthaired, he or she is likely sensitive to the cold. The same goes for older pets and those that may be frail or ill. You can’t take your pet’s

Larger and longhaired pets can usually tolerate cold weather for longer periods of time, and even though you might bundle up, your pet has a long, thick coat prepared for long winter walks. Just remember that if it snows, sharp objects can hide in it. In addition, a pet emergency preparedness kit should be packed and contain the supplies needed to help keep your pet fed, warm and secure in the event of emergency conditions. Despite the fact Spain is known for being a hot country, the winter can still be a cold and dangerous season, especially for vulnerable pets. Items like a sweater, insulated vest, paw booties or wax, petsafe ice melt and a heated bed or pad can all help head off risks associated with cold weather. Emergencies can also create circumstances for pets to become separated from their families. Make sure you put a collar on your pet, with a tag stating their name and your contact number. Making sure your pet is microchipped is also vital.

Census numbers Property golden ticket steady THE yean-end census figures for Denia show an official population of 41,733 inhabitants, a rise of 165 on 2017. The figures have changed little in the last five years

although they are down around 3,000 from the 2011 historical high. At this time Denia had hopes of reaching a population

of 50,000, a figure which now looks unlikely in the next few years. The 2018 census shows that 21,488 of the current inhabitants are female and 20,245 male.

THE Spanish real estate market could be the key in the future to British who want to become EU members even after the UK eventually leaves the European Union. Spain’s “Golden Visa” system grants EU status to non-EU nationals if they invest in the country. While the minimum investment in banks and shares is €1 million, the figure for

property or real estate is a more manageable €500,000. Still a sizeable sum, but with the average house price in London and parts of the south-east creeping up to the half million pound mark, many people who would not regard themselves as wealthy may actually be sitting on (or living in) a

valuable enough property to make a clean start. The scheme has so far attracted about 2 billion Euros, mainly from China and Russia but also from the wealthy in troubled parts of the world such as Venezuela. Mortgage hike Huge increase in city rentals by banking giant THE average cost of renting a property has increased by 45% in Valencia City since 2014, a figure only outpaced by Madrid among Spain’s major cities. May 2014 marked a low point for the city’s rental market after a collapse in the sector but it has recovered rapidly since and the average price for renting is now 8.8€ per square metre per month. Barcelona has barely seen an increase over the same period but still costs an average of 16€ per square metre while the capital is slightly less costly at 15€.

SPAIN’S largest bank and biggest lender, Santander, is raising mortgage rates for many of its customers in a move economists think has been prompted by the recent ruling from the government over bank liability regarding IAJD tax. The raise will mainly affect “less solvent”

borrowers who will see a rise in mortgage basis points and the introduction of a 0.5% opening fee. There will also be a smaller rise for customers in a better financial position who will not be required to pay an opening fee. The rise is seen as a form of insurance against higher-

risk borrowers prompted by the change in the mortgage laws, while Santander has described it as a more personalized form of the loan. No other lenders have announced similar changes at this stage although many are expected to follow suit.

There are fears among some analysts that the growth may be too fast, leading to another crash in the sector. The Ministry of Housing is also introducing various measures to try and slow down the growth, with concerns that low-income people and youngsters will be priced out of the market. This includes the introduction of a rental preference price index across the Community, noting the average price for a municipality and the areas within it.

Motoring

2019 Audi Q3 SUV The previous Audi Q3 just wasn’t that good. It wasn’t great to drive, it looked bland and predictable, while the interior was dated and it was not as spacious as it should have been. Audi’s sought to address that with the latest generation Q3. And what a job it’s done. From the second you set your eyes on the new Q3, it’s clear that it’s moving the game on considerably. Not as bold as the XC40, admittedly, but quietly attractive. The interior is just as impressive. It’s similar to that used in the bigger Q8, as well as the A7 Sportback and e-tron electric SUV. The firm’s Virtual Cockpit - a digital replacement for conventional dials - is standard across the range, as is a 10.1-inch multimedia display in the centre of the dash. It all feels extremely upmarket with premium, soft-touch materials and a generous amount of room. Passengers in the rear are also well catered for, with plenty of head and legroom as well as a bench that can slide backwards and forwards depending on where you want to prioritise the extra space. There are four engines available - three petrols and one diesel, with power ranging from 150PS to 230PS. Audi reckons most Q3 buyers will opt for the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol, badged the 35 TFSI. Most of the time it’s fine, but if you want to overtake you’ll find yourself wishing you’d opted for more power. That’s especially true for the awkward seven-speed S tronic gearbox which can

be reluctant to change down and generally doesn’t provide a drive as refined and relaxing as we’d expect from an Audi SUV. If you’re happy to take it easy, the 35 TFSI and S tronic automatic gearbox is fine. It’s very quiet and refined on the motorway, although the lag when you hit the accelerator can become frustrating around town. Fortunately, there are other options.

The 2.0-litre petrol is available with 190 or 230PS and, we suspect, will be much better suited to the Q3 than the 1.5. Then there’s a 2.0-litre diesel producing 150PS, which will remain the choice for high mileage users. The Q3 is a perfectly reasonable car to drive. The variable ratio steering means it

doesn’t take many turns of the wheel when negotiating tight corners, while it’s also nice and light at low speeds. All-round visibility is also pretty good, with that high-up driving position providing a good view of the road ahead. We’d recommend opting for one of the bigger engines if budget allows, but the entrylevel 1.5 is easy enough to live with every day.

No going back from electric

“Only 5% of Electric Vehicle drivers would ever go back to a conventional car” says audience of YouTube channel, in most comprehensive Clean Energy & Electric Vehicle survey ever conducted. The UK’s largest ever survey of Electric Vehicle drivers and Cleantech enthusiasts (7,723 respondents) has found overwhelmingly, that around nine out of ten plug-in car drivers would never go back to petrol or diesel. After 8 years and 380 episodes, Robert Llewellyn’s Fully Charged - the World’s No.1 Clean Energy & Electric Vehicle channel - has received more than 7,700 responses to its first audience survey. The 50-question study illuminated consumer attitudes to the array of technologies that are set to dominate the next decade. Fully Charged’s host, Robert Llewellyn (Channel 4’s Scrapheap Challenge, BBC’s Red Dwarf), commented: “I have been banging on about Electric Cars, Solar Panels and Batteries for the best part of 10 years, so it’s incredibly gratifying to see the excitement that our viewers have for all things cleantech. Having experienced how impressive electric cars are, we were

not surprised to see so many other drivers saying that they won’t go back to the combustion engine, but it might shock those that have yet to switch. Perhaps, more surprising was that two-thirds of our audience who are yet to buy an EV intend to do so in the next 2 years.” According to the survey 56.89% of the Fully Charged audience that do not yet own an Electric Vehicle, intend to acquire one by the end of 2020, with three quarters planning to purchase a pure Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), as opposed to a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This, combined with the fact, that ‘the shift to Electric Vehicles’, means that 87.67% of respondents could

‘choose a different brand to those that they have historically preferred’, might cause concern amongst those car companies that are yet to offer a credible line-up of all-electric models. Furthermore, the principle issue that has held consumers back from buying an EV to date is neither the lack of attractive, available options, nor the lack of charging infrastructure, rather it’s the perceived cost of new (33%) and used (14.9%)

Electric Vehicles. This is in spite of the fact that, as a result of their much lower running costs, EVs are increasingly competitive over the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). While the Fully Charged audience typically has a high proportion of ‘early-adopters’ with an almost equal interest in EVs (88.67%) and Clean Energy/ Renewables (88.61%), the survey shows that they are more interested in new technology itself, than the problems those technologies might mitigate against, such as Air Pollution (39.83%) and Climate Change (44.39%). Attitudes to home energy reveal that of those considering a new energy supplier,

68.91% intend to switch to a ‘green energy’ supplier and 83.74% are interested in ‘new energy technologies’ not least Solar PV, Batteries, Smart Controls, Heat Pumps and Vehicle-to-Grid. “We’ve always maintained that simply because they are better technologies, Electric Vehicles and Renewables will become mainstream,” said Robert. “And this is borne out by our survey. It’s the cars in particular that are starting to turn heads, and having driven all of them from the Tesla Model 3 to VW’s hotly-anticipated I.D., I can honestly say that there’s a really cool choice of Electric Cars for almost every budget. At Fully Charged, we’re working hard to help consumers understand how easy it is to live with Electric Vehicles and how the experience is even better if you can power them with Clean Energy.” In addition to its fast-growing global audience on YouTube, Fully Charged is also bringing its Fully Charged LIVE show back to Silverstone on 7th, 8th and 9th June, and is looking to replicate this hugely successful format in North America at the Circuit of the Americas (Austin, Texas) later in the year.

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-andwhite crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Golden SuBo returns with a buzzer

Was it really ten years ago that Scottish chanteuse, Susan Boyle walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage and announced, to sniggers of derision from the audience, that her dream was to be a professional singer. Admittedly, her dowdy clothes and scarecrow-like hair did give her the appearance of a down at heel bag lady, but then she opened her mouth to sing. That, jaw dropping performance of, ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ from Les Miserables, has gone down in history as one of the defining auditions of the show, causing an internet meltdown as millions of people around the world, rushed to watch her performance on

Youtube. Over the intervening decade, the unassuming spinster from small town Scotland, has gone on to conquer the World, selling over 20 million records and embarking on numerous solo tours. And this week, she returned to sing in front of Simon Cowell once again, on America’s Got Talent: The Champions, competing against former contestants from the UK and US. Before she took to the stage, however, Susan reflected on her original audition, admitting “Most of the audience, they were laughing, but they looked at my mouth, and that seemed to change.”

Once again, SuBo’s rendition of her hit single Wild Horses, brought the house down and a standing ovation from audiences and judges. A smiling Cowell told the singer, ““You know what, Susan? I can’t think of any other contestant who has defined this show better... if I’m being honest with you. “You’re the one, you made a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives. I’m absolutely thrilled you’re here.” Mel B added: “I just want to say what an absolute honour and pleasure it is to be sitting here and listening to you, your angelic voice, and

I want to be the woman who gives you something you deserve.”

The Spice Girls singer then proceeded to press her Golden Buzzer for Susan, admitting she “should have gotten that first time round”. Asked if she considered herself a champion, the singer added: “For those who maybe don’t have the confidence to do things, for those who don’t have a voice, the ones who people tend to ignore, I feel like I’m a champion for them.” Pure class from a classy broad …… God bless you Susan Boyle

End of the Roadie for Adele? Fans of UK superstar Adele are in meltdown this week, with the news that she’s closed the company that runs her tour schedule. The Hello singer has reportedly closed her touring firm, Remedy Touring LLP, despite banking an estimated £142 million in one year. Fans are now concerned that the British singer really will quit touring after hinting that she won’t be performing any live shows in the future. According to The Sun, Adele filed a declaration of solvency to have Remedy Touring LLP put into voluntary liquidation on Friday. Adele performed 121 shows on the mammoth world tour during 2016 and 2017 to a total audience of 1.5 million, across Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. While on-stage at her final show at London’s Wembley Stadium in June 2017, the 30-yearold delivered the heartbreaking news that it might be her final tour. “Touring isn’t something I’m good at. Applause makes me feel vulnerable.

I don’t know if I will ever tour again. The only reason I’ve toured is you,” she told the stunned audience. “I might never see you again at a live show — who knows — but I will remember this for the rest of

Kuhn eliminated Campoamor was the venue for our first game of 2019; surprisingly we were able to field 50 players! This is very unusual for this time of year so our first tee time had to be brought forward to 8:52 which was not really appreciated after the festivities of the new year but it didn’t deter some of your members from returning good scores, although some may have felt that the day could have been spent better in bed. Campoamor has a very strong slope rating which means that everyone gets a few extra stokes on their handicap and you need it, some of the holes play very long. As per nor-

mal we have N.T.P. competition on all par 3’s in this case that means 5 N.T.P.’s one for each category and 2 for any player including guests. All of the markers indicate who is eligible to compete on which hole, unfortunately not everyone reads the instructions and thereby put their name on the wrong pin, come guys it couldn’t be easier, just read what the marker says. The course is still improving and it won’t be long now before the new green on hole 6 will be open for play which should reduce the number of 2’s made on the temporary green this week there were 3, D. Cranston, C. Landaas,

P. Bradley the 4th was on the 17th by Sandra Twentyman who said that she “chipped. in” from 100m with a wood, good onya Sandra. Our best guest was Mr. Persen with 31 pts. Bronze category; 3rd Mrs. K. Alm 32 points, 2nd S. Twentyman 35, 1st J. Fletcher 35 L/H. Silver category; 3rd Alex Alm 32, A. Rickers 36 and at last a handicap cut for Swedish member Lars Jernberg after scoring 41 points. Gold category; 3rd 90 Years young I. Nygaard 31, 2nd P. Bradley 31 L/H 1st C. Landaas 33. For more info about our Society please log onto www.tmgs.org or our F.B. page @tmgsgolf.

Torrevieja teenager Nicola Kuhn failed to make it into the main draw of the Australian Open(see back page), after losing his second qualifying match in straight sets in the early hours of yesterday morning to the experienced Japanese player,

by Alex Trelinski

Tatsuma Ito. 30-year-old Ito, who reached a career-high world ranking of 60 back in 2012, beat Kuhn in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Kuhn had earlier in the week won his first qualify-

ing clash against the veteran Frenchman, Stephane Robert, 6-4, 7-6. The youngster grabbed the opening set with a single break at 1-1 and he came from a 3-0 down in set two to reach the tie break and seal the deal in straight sets.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

It was another blockbuster week in the Alfaz Fantasy Football League when the 18 F.A.Cup Ties involving Premier League Clubs, plus a full Premier League programme gave the A.F.F.L. a record average points week of 55. A total of 81 goals, 17 clean sheets, 51 yellow cards and 3 red ones all went into the mix this week. As expected a lot of Premier League Managers in the F.A.Cup made a raft of changes after the hectic Festive schedule but it didn’t stop John’s team Wee Aggies from stretching their lead at the top of the Fantasy to 56 points over 2nd placed Adam’s Equipo Sin Hombre. Barbra’s XI moved up 2 places to 3rd while Pauline’s Vodka Army slipped down to 6th. At the opposite end of the table, Gary’s team Upside Team fell further behind Dave’s team The Hatters, the gap now 26 points. Ollie’s team Olly F.C. have held on to the top spot of our Junior League for the last 3 weeks keeping Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar at arm’s length. Currently, they have a slender 10 point advantage. The battle at the bottom

is between 3 teams, Fleetwood Gian who are bottom at the moment, Tom’s Real City & Bez Boden who moved out of the relegation zone this week. After being top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section for a total of 8 weeks Pauline’s Vodka Army has finally surrendered the Summit to Barbra’s XI who have taken a 15 point lead. Linda’s Team Tapas remain in 3rd place followed by Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja who had a terrible week with her favourite team Liverpool not only losing their unbeaten run to Manchester City they then went and got knocked out of the F.A.Cup by Wolves in the Monday Night game. Down at the foot of the table, Kim’s Ginger United made up ground on Liz’s Cookies Crew 61, the gap now only 13 points. The average score in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League was almost 24 points thanks to those 81 goals being scored. Top Marksmen were Spur’s Llorente, who scored a hat -trick against luckless Tranmere and West Ham’s Arnautovic

who scored 3 goals over 2 games. Bill’s team East Fifers have been top of this Division since before Christmas and don’t look like losing it as this week they extended their advantage over Nick’s Blackcats to 22 points. Former front-runners Graham’s Lloris & Gromit are tucked in nicely in the 3rd spot. There is not a lot going on in the relegation zone where Liz’s Cookie’s Crew 61 are making no headway. at present, they trail Mick’s Walkden Town Res by 18 points. The Highest score this week goes to James’s team 2 Girls, 1 Schlupp who clocked up 97 points which is the joint highest score of the Season along with Simply, Simply, Lovely. We have 2 teams who got the lowest score and the Managers were both Liverpool Supporters Dani’s Top of the Klopps and Carl’s Liverpool are better than City( Ha Ha !) both scored 17 points. The 3 teams will go into our Monthly Wine Draw. Len’s H.M.S. Victory won our November Draw. There is no change at the top or bottom of our Champion of

Champions League, where Pauline’s Vodka Army still lead the way and Dave’s team The Hatters are still holding everybody else up. James’s 2 Girls,1 Schlupp are quickly off the mark in our Manager of the Month for January which is being kindly sponsored by Mona’s Restaurant in Albir who provide excellent food in nice cosy surroundings, James’s team have taken a 6 point advantage over Martin’s Marauders at the top while Dyson V.C. 11 are in the reckoning along with 3 teams Adrian’s Pelligrini’s St.Army, One for the Road and Chris’s P.G.Tips who are all on 88 points which gives them all a good chance of winning this super meal for 2 at Mona’s Restaurant. Our F.A.Cup League got off to a flyer with would you believe it Dave’s team The Hatters who are floundering at the bottom of 2 Leagues shoot straight to the Summit and took a slight 9 point lead over Jimmy’s team Nick’s Blues. Dani’s Top of the Klopps have only 1 point at the bottom and I can’t see them getting many

more points with Liverpool out of the Cup. Don’t forget only points scored in the F.A, Cup count in this League which normally goes right down to the wire with F.A.Cup Final being decisive. Pauline’s Vodka Army who were favourites to win our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition was beaten by Leon’s Polish Power by 69-41. The new favourites Equipo Sin Hombre eased through by seeing off Dave’s team The Liverpool Way 49-21. We have only 2 Ladies teams in the last 32 and they are Mrs, Max & Paddy and Rovers and Out. Jack’s Balotellitubbies are the only Junior team still in the Competition, so it looks like the lads are going to have it all their own way but you never know in a Cup K.O. situation. The Results for the 3rd round will soon be up on our website with the draw for the next round to follow. Apologies for a mistake last week I said the top scoring team was King Carrakop 023 with 97 points when in fact it was Micky’s team Simply, Simply, Lovely who scored 97. Sorry Folks!

murray´s aussie return

The tennis world will turn to Melbourne for the first grand slam of 2019, with the Australian Open starting this Monday, which will include Andy Murray trying to reignite his career after an injuryhit 2018. The 31-year-old Briton missed last year’s tournament - where he is a five-time runnerup - after hip surgery and was last in competitive action in an event at Brisbane(pictured).

by Alex Trelinski

Murray is ranked 230th in the world after playing just six tournaments in 2018 but used his protected ranking to enter the first Grand Slam of the year. That means though he could be up against any of the top players in the first round. Defending champion Roger Federer and world number one Novak Djokovic are both aiming

to become the first man to win seven Australian Open titles, while Caroline Wozniacki defends the women’s trophy after her maiden Grand Slam win last year. Britain’s leading female player Johanna Konta - a semifinalist in 2016 - is hoping to start the new season positively after a disappointing 2018 but she is seeking to shake off an injury, after pulling out of the warm-up event in Sydney with a neck problem.
