DADDY DAVID! www.decordenia.com

LOCAL celebrity and international sports star David Ferrer became a father for the first time on 4 May after his wife Marta gave birth to a baby boy. The Javea born and bred tennis player still has many connections with the Marina Alta town, and doubtless it will not be too long before his new son, named Leo, will visit his father’s place of birth. Ferrer is having

a good professional and personal 2018 so far, and his heroics with compatriot Rafa Nadal helped Spain progress to the Davis Cup semi-finals last month. However he has announced that due to the new arrival his tennis will take second place for at least a week, and he has withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters.

Bang on trend FASHIONISTAS in the UK have decided that THE item for British women to be seen in this summer will be a £39.99 dress manufactured and sold by Spanish retailer Zara. The checked belted dress follows on from a blue and white coat sold by Zara in the summer of 2016 that was so popular it spawned its own Instagram account (@thatcoat). The latest outfit has bottle green checks, in an A-line silhouette style with matching belt and pockets. The Evening Standard’s fashion editor has proclaimed “you are about to see this dress on every high street”, while the money conscious will like the fact that you are basically buying a whole outfit for under £40. Zara is the flagship store of the Inditex group, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers whose

owner and founder, Amancio Ortega, is Spain’s wealthiest person with an estimated net worth of around €60 billion - an amount set to increase a little further if the new dress takes off as expected.

Heavy metal thefts

FOUR men thought to be responsible for the theft of three and a half tons of copper have been arrested by police. The accused scoured the Alicante and Murcia provinces in broad daylight, looking for plants, factories and industrial areas where copper is used in bulk for tasks such as wiring and electrics. They would often target industrial estates in broad daylight, in one

by Simon Russell

case taking €90,000 worth of copper from a ceramics factory which is currently out of operation due to the thefts. The Guardia Civil became aware of an increase in copper thefts and started looking into local scrapyards, the most common place for selling these types of stolen goods. They identified two possible perpetrators and began following

them, something they continued to do until they had sufficient evidence to charge them and their two accomplices. The men have been charged with robbery with force, theft, fraud and also a civil crime. They are Spaniards aged between 21 and 41 who were arrested in Aspe and Novelda. Three other men, also all Spaniards, have been charged with receiving stolen goods.

Kiddie ‘Mechanical Mule’ scatters bathers crooks by Simon Russell

TWO minors were among six people who have been arrested in Denia for a break-in and theft at local shops and businesses. CCTV footage at one shop shows five people forcing a door open, then entering the store and stealing €1,000 in cash. In another case a €1,500 bicycle was taken

after an outside wall had been climbed. This was later tracked by police for sale on the internet at €80. Due to witnesses and the camera footage the police have identified who they believe are the six people responsible. The adults are aged between 18 and 45; the age of the minors has not been disclosed.

New dock strike on the cards LESS than a year after their last industrial dispute ended Spain’s dockworkers are threatening to go back on strike. The fallout is about the reform of the sector and the lack of security given to existing stevedores and other dockers by the proposed changes. This includes financial aid for workers wanting or needing to

take early retirement. Antolin Goya, head of the Sea-workers Union, admitted that his members felt helpless and viewed the current situation with “great concern.” Any strike would once again affect Valencia’s three major ports, Castellon, Alicante and Valencia itself, which were all disrupted during the last five month dispute.

IN a bizarre incident, bathers looked on at a Denia beach last weekend when a motorised contraption described in the spanish press as a ‘mula mecánica’ (mechanical mule/ donkey) entered the beach pulling a trailer. As well as the driver there were four men in the trailer as the machine ploughed into the waves and along the shoreline, complete with fluttering Spanish flag. Bathers and beachgoers at the normally quiet Playa Deveses failed to see the funny side as at least two small children had to get out of the way and the men appeared to be the worse for wear due to alcohol. They may find the stunt ends up as an expensive one; motorized vehicles are banned on the beach and a breach can result in a fine of up to €1,500.

Former mayor tax trial starts THE trial has begun of Diaz Alperi, the former mayor of Alicante who stands accused of tax fraud. Mr Alperi was the Partido Popular mayor of the city from 1995 to 2008, winning four municipal elections. The allegations relate to three tax years, including 2007 when he was still in office. The total amount of taxes evaded is calculated at €700,000 by the treasury, something which they have

requested a jail sentence of nine years and nine months for if he is found guilty. In 2007 it was alleged that he earned just over a million euros but only declared his income at €113,000, his mayoral salary. Other allegations revolve around the purchase of a luxury yacht and unpaid taxes in 2008 and 2010. Due to the complexity of the allegations the trial is expected to take some time to complete.

Tragic anniversary marked

LAST Monday was the first anniversary of one of Spain’s worst cycling accidents when three riders from Javea were killed by a drunk driver on the N-332 outside Oliva. The date was commemorated by many in the town, with one of the more poignant being the gathering of the Trillebieg Bike Club which victims Eduardo Monfort, Luis Contreras and Jose Albi were all members of. However, a year on there are concerns that nothing has really changed, with many describing the N-332 as one of the most dangerous for cyclists in the whole of Spain. In the period from January 2016 to June 2017, there were

by Simon Russell

31 serious accidents involving cyclists on the road as it passes through the region, resulting in four deaths and 37 injuries, statistically the highest in Spain and one of the worst in Europe. There are a number of ways to improve road safety, say, campaigners. These range from education to opening the A-7 motorway to free traffic, reducing the numbers on the N-332. Just last week The Weekender’s front page story reported that the woman who caused the accident has asked to be released from jail until she goes to trial for the triple killing, a request met with derision by many.

symbolism. No-one has been seen depositing the veg either, and presumably it is being done at night or in the small hours. However locals aren’t

worried that the strange ritual is anything untoward and some think it is quite a touching, if slightly odd, gesture to the towns deceased.

THE descendants of a Franco era government minister who were controversially bequeathed land owned by him have been denounced by Javea Town Council for carrying out illegal works on the plot. Mariano Rubio was Franco’s Finance Minister and was built the 6,680 square meter villa on the Punta de ‘Arenal as a “gift” from the dictator. The current owners, descendants of Rubio’s, have been accused of building a new pier and steps without permission and encroaching on public land, something they deny. The owners of the land and villa have also been applying for the “return” of a further 1,000 m2 of land they believe to be rightfully theirs, despite this being an area heavily protected by planning laws.

Buses back AFTER a successful pilot last year, the shuttle bus service from Denia town centre to La Pedrera and the Montgo is now back in service. The service is a daily one and after passenger feedback, the frequency of departures had been increased and the schedule adjusted, primarily to fit in with the schools and health centre at La Pedrera.

Tickets will cost just one euro and the service runs until 30 September. There will be departures from the town’s bus station at 7.45 and 10.45 in the morning then 1.45, 3.45, 5.45 and 7.45 in the afternoons for Route 1 while Route 2 departs half an hour later. Bags for life THE driver of a car struck at speed by a fleeing criminal’s vehicles said that airbags almost certainly saved the lives of him and his family. The incident happened on the AP-7 motorway near Torrent (Valencia)

last Thursday when a driver failed to stop when flagged down by a Guardia Civil patrol. Instead he took off at high speed with the police pursuing. The fleeing driver than crashed into the car of a family returning from a

holiday in Almeria enroute to their Barcelona home; the collision was unavoidable according to occupants. The four passengers, a husband and wife, their 20 year old niece and the 83-yearold mother of the driver escaped any serious injury although the elder woman

was fully health checked before being released. The car of the man who had fled from the police was immobilised in the crash and he was stopped and tested for drink and drugs. He was found to be positive for cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines and opiates and is likely to face several charges after being led away in handcuffs.

DANGER

DATE

LOCAL Police were notified after a young man climbed one of Javea’s tallest palm trees without any safety equipment or even shoes. Onlookers feared for his safety as the youth shimmied up the tree in Plaza Portal del Clot where a fall would almost certainly have resulted in serious injury or worse. However he seemed to

know what he was doing and got to the top, plucked a date, and came back down safely, all before the police arrived. It is thought that the stunt was done for a bet and that the date was proof of the achievement. The event was filmed and has been viewed many times on social media.

A total of 78 bags of refuse were collected at Javea’s second Day of Cleaning where volunteers and local businesses collaborated to clean Javea’s coast and seabed. The consensus from those who also took part last year was that there was less litter around this time, although the problem has far from gone away. 256 people from locally and all over the region participated, and while plastic was the most common form of waste there was metal, tyres and

by Simon Russell

even a shopping trolley collected. Several local diving, boating and kayaking clubs as well as Javea businesses took part, scouring the seabed, caves and rocks for the less accessible litter. The Red Cross, Fishing Guild, Oceanografic Foundation, Department of Environment, Civil Protection and Local Police all also collaborated in the day, while the weather played

No camper vans at night AFTER feedback from residents, Calpe is modifying its by-laws to restrict the times that motor homes can park on public roads and car parks. These will be limited from 9am to 10pm (11pm in the summer), effectively banning overnight stays. It also means the practice of some drivers who bag a

prime spot and stay there for a long period of time will come to an end. Complaints from locals and residents have been about the occupants of homes emptying dirty water by the roadside, hogging seafront bays, littering, noise and a lack of contribution to the local economy.

Ripe for wine growing A report commissioned to analyse the future of wine growing in the Marina Alta has many positive things to say, although there are risks present as well. Generally, the natural biodiversity of the region and low salt

by Simon Russell

levels in the soil make it a good area for grapevines. If required other areas within the Marina Alta could be used for wine growing,

although due to the biodiversity the quality and type of grape will vary, even from town to town. Possible risks include a changing climate with risks arising from a cooling or warming pattern of weather

while significantly increased or decreased rainfall levels will also be detrimental. Fertilization with iron salts is also recommended to minimise the risks of vine disease in the high clay and limestone-based soil.

Skyping child sex MODERN technology is not always a force for good, and child pornographers have found it a useful tool for spreading their evil material. The popular online communication medium Skype was the latest application to be used, and people in Alicante and Valencia are among those arrested after the culmination of a major global investigation into an online paedophile ring. Europol’s Action Force

by Matthew Richards

against Cybercrime (JCAT) led the operation which involved monitoring people in Canada, Hungary, Italy and France as well as Spain. Disguising themselves online as paedophiles JCAT agents were invited to chat-rooms that catered for their supposed tastes. In the chat-room files were often exchanged, and it is the links from these that led computer experts to track

the men down and culminated in the recent spate of arrests. The arrests were coordinated worldwide so as not to alert any of the perpetrators and in Spain these totalled four in

Valencia, two in Alicante and one in Palma de Mallorca. The police also confiscated various evidence including 12 PC hard drives, four laptops, five memory sticks, five mobile phones and SIM cards.

Careline Theatre The Lion King Jr Roaring Success

Lions, hyenas, giraffes and all manner of exotic African wildlife took to the stage at Careline Theatre’s Academy production of The Lion King Jr last Saturday 5th May. The packed audience of young and old was spellbound by a theatrical spectacle of a quality and standard never before seen on the Costa Blanca. A standing ovation rewarded the cast (the youngest was just four!) of this amazing production that also included zebras, antelope, monkeys, flamingoes, elephants, leopards, white birds and wildebeest. “I’ll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure.” Mae West by Hugh Robertson

With around 42 percent of married Brits ending up divorced it is lamentable that English divorce law is so draconian. Spain doesń t even make it into the top 20 countries of divorcees, and ironically given it being a honeymoon destination the Maldives comes first (more of that later). However English law may be at a crossroads driven by changes in society and attitudes. Let s hope ´ so. It was in 1857 that divorce was made available to people other than the rich who could afford to seek an Act of Parliament. In 1937 other grounds were permitted subject to strict proof for instance desertion and “the bottle”. Then in 1969 the groundbreaking Divorce Reform Act enshrined the concept that a divorce could be granted if a marriage had irretrievably broken down. Thus a divorce could be granted if the parties consented after 2 years of living apart or without consent after 5 years of separation. Whilst the actual divorce had become a simpler matter, problems remained and the battle ground became the children and financial provisions. It was only in 1996 that the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court) made a groundbreaking decision.Until then a woman’s entitlement was judged by her needs – not her contribution. Pamela White had run a successful farm business with her husband for 33 years and the business was worth about £ 4.5 million. The Court initially awarded her £800,000. She appealed first to the Court of Appeal and then pressed on to the House of Lords where she was awarded £1.5 million. Theimportance? The highest Court in the land had decreed that assets should be split fairly and contribution of a wife to the creation of the assets be properly recognised including as a

homemaker. But, problems that the UK Parliament should addressremain. There is still the need to actually prove that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. Sir James Munby, Britain’s top family judge, advocates that no fault divorce should be introduced to assist women trapped in a loveless marriage. He was prompted by the sad case of Mrs Owens who was unable to divorce her husband because she could not prove that his behaviour was sufficiently unreasonable. The case dismayed Sir James . Mrs Owens had come to the conclusion that after 39 years her marriage to her wealthy husband had come to an end. It was her irrevocable decision but, unfortunately, not his. It is

a personal matter as to whether behaviour amounts to being unreasonable. There is no one size fits all and she could not convince the Court. Mr Owens may have won his case but to no avail because his wife had decided that there was no way that she could live with him. His ‘pyrrhic victory’ sent out the message that effectively means that someone in her position must wait for 5 years to elapse before they can divorce without agreement if they have lived apart

throughout that time. That can be a very long time in legal and probably emotional limbo. Sir James commented that

“the law which the Judges have to apply and the procedures which they have to follow are based on hypocrisy and lack of intellectual honesty”.

His views are echoed by Baroness Hale, President of the Supreme Court, who has said that blame should be removed from the divorce process. Sir James has also commented that the lack of legal recognition of cohabitees is “an injustice “. His view is that a woman who has given herself to a long term relationship without actual marriage should enjoy the same

rights as a married woman. As the law stands they are entitled to nothing when a relationship ends. The Law Commission has made similar recommendations. Sir James Munby is an enlightened judge and has further suggested thatserious thought be given to divorce itself being separated from the adjudication of child and financial issues and become a purely administrative process dealt with by a ‘Registrar of Births, Marriage, Divorce and Death’.

It is Parliament that makes the law and it must act. However there is another issue that must be addressed and it is one which requires delicate handling. The inequality faced by many Muslim wives.Discussing the issue does not discriminate against a minority but is aimed at greater inclusion in what was once fashionably called ‘The Big Society’. Historically within the British Isles the law has at times positively discriminated against particular religious groups, for instance Catholics and it has been necessary for Parliament to act. However, efforts to include all areactually being undermined by the very people who complain of isolation because of their faith. For example, it is possible for a couple to marry with an Islamic ceremony, the ‘Nikah’not recognised under English law. Divorce for a Muslim man is a simple matter – he merely has to say “I divorce you” three times and the divorce is legitimate under Islamic law. (Hence the Maldives statistic earlier). On the other hand, outrageously,in non-Muslim countries a Muslim woman has to apply to a Sharia Council. If she cannot establish ‘grounds’ for divorce she forfeits her right to Mehr – a compulsory financial gift from her husband. There are over 80 Sharia Councils operating in the UK andthey act in good faith but a cornerstone of Britain’s unwritten constitution is the ‘Rule of Law’ which must surely apply to all who live within the jurisdiction .

the testimony of a woman in court is worth half of that of a man (Quran 2:282 All should be equal under English Law. Surely that cannot be reconciled with the rule under Islamic law that the testimony of a woman in court is worth half of that of a man (Quran 2:282, I believe.) I also believe that Parliament should remove the need to prove‘fault’ to enable divorce, should legitimise the rights of cohabitees and require registration of all marriages whatever form they may take.

Overbuilding protest Calpe OVER 300 people turned out in Calpe last Sunday to protest against what they saw as unchecked over development in the Marina Alta town. Protesting under the slogan “Otro Calp es possible” (Another Calpe is possible) the participants want Mayor Cesar Sanchez to end

what they describe as “privileges for builders”. They hope to see limits on the height of new constructions enforced and an end to projects that squander money and land such as golf courses. The day went peacefully and 350 signatures were collected, which will be presented to the mayor’s office.

Murder suspect detained A 51-year-old man has been arrested near the Valencian town of Utiel in connection with a murder in Toledo earlier the same day. Events started when police in Toledo went to inspect a vehicle that was stopped by a roundabout and found a dead woman inside the car, along with an injured child. This was at about 8.30am and at 6pm the same day the detainee was involved in an

accident on the A-3 motorway in Valencia, about 300 km from Toledo. After checking his details the police arrested the man in connection with the earlier killing. No official details have been released but sources say that the detainee is thought to be the partner of the victim, who was killed with a gunshot. The child’s injuries are not said to be life threatening.

Police apprehend Brit base jumpers

A group of British parachutists, arrested by Benidorm local police while heading for an illegal jump off one of the resort’s tallest buildings, are now faced with hefty euro penalties into the hundreds of thousands. The four arrested flyers, staying on holiday in Benidorm, were apprehended, armed with parachutes in the early hours of last saturday morning. Police believed the parachutists were planning to ascend and jump from the roof of the Torre Levante apartment building, situated directly on levante beach frontline, in the vicinity of the Hotel Don Pancho. Thrill seekers are drawn to base jumping through it’s dangerous nature, as many of the jumps are conducted without prior permission or authority and filmed by the parachutists for later broadcast on internet sites, such as youtube. In this case, the four protagonists, were arrested, as the police officers had reason to believe that they may have made several prior jumps without capture. The four Brits, whose parachutes were confiscated by the arresting officers, now face fines of up to 300,000 euros for the illegal activity.

Building your family tree RESIDENTS of Marina Alta towns Pego and l’Atzuvia are being given help in tracing their ancestry, possibly as far back as the sixteenth century. The parish archives go back as far as 1533 can be accessed at a special event in the Casa de la Cultura in Pego on 16 May. The records from the mid-sixteenth century to 1800 have now been computerised

and this will also be of great help to those who want to look into their family tree. In 1533 Vila Pegolina, as the municipalities were then known, had around 1,000 residents, many of whom will still have descendants living in the towns today. However, the task will not be straightforward as basics such as names and surnames were changed in

many different official records while most ordinary people at that time were illiterate. As usual births, christenings, marriages and deaths were the most reliable source of information and the most likely to be recorded. If your descendants were in the church or army, as many people were back in that time, they may also be on other records.

Diabetic? What is your HbA1c?

Nigel

Fact: many diabetics reading this will have no idea what an HbA1c is. I shall rectify this with a brief explanation but that is not the point of this article. The point is that good diabetes management can drastically reduce complications. The main person responsible for your diabetes management is YOU but unless you understand your condition how can you be expected to control it?!

In an ideal world, every newly diagnosed diabetic would have a short series of appointments with their Doctor or Practice Nurse where they would be educated about their condition and given the opportunity to ask any questions.

NIGEL– Loves to sit on your lap or as close to as he can, he also loves to ‘kneed’ you. He is a very handsome boy with pale blue eyes, is very loving, good with other cats and is ok with dogs. He is 11 months old, has been neutered and would need an outdoor area, so an apartment home wouldn’t be suitable. Nigel is the last of his litter to be homed. He was found with his mother and 5 other kittens in a suitcase at the bins. Can you offer this boy a home? No adoption fee but a donation is always appreciated. Food and donations also urgently needed and can be left at ARC’s charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1, Jalon between 10 am & 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday. Heart and blood vessel disease. Nerve damage (neuropathy). Kidney damage (nephropathy). Eye damage. Foot damage and amputations Skin and mouth conditions. Osteoporosis. Alzheimer’s disease. Hearing problems.

It has long been recognized in the medical world that educated patients cope better with chronic diseases such as diabetes. Knowledge gives them power over their illnesses, reduces complications and reduces the risk of depression that often accompanies chronic disease. So, for those of you that don’t know, your HbA1c is your average blood glucose over a 2-3 month period. It is expressed as a percentage and in general, the aim of treatment is an HbA1c of between 6.5% and 7.5 % depending upon the patient. This figure is very important as it is used to decide: -if and when you need to change from diet only control to tablets. -if your medication dose needs changing. -if you require different types of tablets to control your blood glucose. -if you need to commence insulin. If you have questions about any aspect of your diabetes or feel that there are gaps in your understanding of your condition, make an appointment with a suitably qualified health care professional who can give you the time that you need.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA 38 It is easy to assume that container planting refers to quite small pots - hanging baskets in particular tend not to be large (when newly watered, they can be very heavy indeed). There are many people, however, who have situations where quite large containers are needed - you only have to walk around a local garden centre to see the hundreds of large pots on sale to confirm this. Planting such large containers is not quite as easy as it might seem. Obviously, the sheer size means that the inadequate growing medium problem is avoided but watering still has to be considered (it is one instance where a watering system might be an advantage!) as well as such things as, perhaps, being evergreen, able to withstand full sun and possibly salt winds. They should be fairly quick growing to no more than about 3-4 metres and not produce too much mess from leaf litter or fruit (berries). So one candidate is Tecom-

aria capensis, or Cape Honeysuckle. This plant is usually classed as a climber , but left to its own, it tends to be an upright shrub with orange or dark red flowers although there are other colour variations as well. The evergreen foliage is always attractive, very clean looking and shiny. Selective pruning of stems after flowering will create an interesting, open shrub and help to renew the display which comes mainly in the late summer and autumn but can often last well into winter. Several varieties of Callistemon (Bottle Brush) are available locally and are often to be seen in public plantings. C. viminalis is, perhaps, the one most recommended in this situation. A graceful foliage plant with a weeping habit, and gorgeousflowers. It is certainly considered drought tolerant once established and will thrive under cooler mediterraneansummers with no additional water. In our heat, regular garden watering would

particularly, one that flowers down to the base – some quite attractive specimens only flower at the tips which rather misses the point of the exercise!

be adequate. C. viminalis will get to be more than 4 metres tall with age, so it will probably need some regular tip pinching/shaping to keep it tight and bushy. Nerium, or Oleander as it is more commonly known, is an obvious candidate although it does grow like fury and drops quite a lot of leaves (it is also

subject to the usual warning about being poisonous but as a lady gardener remarked to me years ago “I normally wear gloves when gardening and always wash my hands afterwards, so what’s the problem?” Prunings are, nonetheless, better put in the bin rather than burnt or composted). Try to get a medium sized variety and,

Other possible candidates include pistacia lentiscus, viburnum, cotoneaster, polygala, choisya, hibiscus (red), lantana, malaleuca, santolina, teucrium, agaves, aloes, yuccas, phormium, strelitzia, poinsettia, genista (common Spanish broom), cestrum nocturnum, cortaderia, schinus molle, olive, mimosa (acacia dealbata), palms, cupressus sempervirens, tamarix, cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree), chorisia, jacaranda, bauhinia, parkinsonia, sophora, strawberry tree (arbutos unedo), albizia, tipuana, caesalpinia gillesii. While many of these may not meet some of the criteria given above, such as leaf drop, it is often a case of getting what you can rather than what you really want!

The soothing, gentle action of the EMS training is especially recommended for back pain, incontinence, weakened lower pelvic muscles or painful muscular spasms. By using EMS, you will see your health status reaching a new level of quality. In the process of EMS training, each muscle group is involved. That is for 40 minutes of training a person receives a load, which equals a load of 2 hours in the gym. At the end of training, the EMS suite will perform a lymph drainage massage, after which the muscles will regain their tone. During all training, the coach will help you to do exercises that he will choose specially for you. Spanish house price data published in April 2018

12-month Euribor, the base rate used for most mortgages in Spain, came in at -0.19 in April, a fraction higher than the month before, but 59.7% lower than the same month last year, which is what counts when it comes to annually resetting mortgages. As a result, borrowers in Spain with annually resetting Spanish mortgages will see their mortgage payments fall by around ₏3.6 per month for a typical ₏120,000 loan with a 20 year term. Euribor’s downward trend deep into negative territory looks like it has run its course, as you can see from the chart above. Having fallen every month between September 2016 and December 2017 Euribor has remained unchanged or risen in three of the last four months. Financial analysts quoted in

the Spanish press report that traders do not expect Euribor to fall much further, if at all. Monetary sanity has to return to the Eurozone at some point, and that day now looks a bit closer. Once again you can see below the ten year chart illustrating how interest rates in the Eurozone have fallen to historic lows, and money has never been this cheap. It looks like a good time to take out a long-term, fixed-interest rate mortgage as money might never be this cheap again in our lifetimes. If interest rates, inflation, and Spanish property prices rise (as they are), buying a Spanish home today with a fixed-rate mortgage could turn out to be an excellent investment, especially considering how pricey all other assets around the world appear to be.

Benitachell Bowls Club v Torrevieja Branch of The Royal British Legion Wednesday 3rd May, with perfect weather for bowling, the BBC greeted the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion. This visit was a wish of Jim Dobbins a former BBC member, and a very much missed, friend and member of the Torrevieja Branch of the Legion. A year ago today, sadly, Jim passed away before the visit came to fruition. But his friends had made a promise to him and made sure that it was going to be kept.

Badge. BBC managed to win on all rinks bar one, it did not matter as everyone thoroughly enjoyed them-selves.

All agreed that the meal was excellent, being followed by the speeches and the presentation of a pennant for the Club. Dianne Budd worked very hard selling raffle tickets for the Legion Poppy Appeal, eventually making 118 euros for this very good cause. At the end of all the proceedings, Dianne and Brenda presented a trophy to the Club in Richard Gardiner Captained memory of Jim. the BBC and Brenda Brown was Captain of the day for the Both Dianne and Allan visitors. The afternoon started Budd remarked that I would be with a soup and roll lunch so nice to make it a reciprocal and then out on the green for competition, one and all agreed, competitive bowling. Prior to so we will have to make it the game all the BBC players happen. were presented with a Poppy

Javea Green Bowlers The Peter Drake Shield Management versus Chairman take top two prizes at BBC Open The annual Benitachell Open attracts top bowlers from all of the surrounding clubs. Seven days of intense bowling saw successful players often required to play two full matches a day in intense heat. Finals day saw four

Javea players lift two of the four trophies. Firstly Derek & Lynne Eldon (with Greg Spearing & Yvonne Briden) won the mixed rinks, then Jan & Paul Brown beat the home team of Yvonne Browne & Alex Fisher to lift the

Pairs trophy. Derek Eldon thanked the BBC for a well run competition and the unbiased support of the large crowd on finals day. After the presentations players were treated to tapas and wine courtesy of BBC.

Well what a good day we all had, 56 bowlers, split into 2 Sqads, turned out to contest the new Trophy on the block, ‘The Peter Drake Shield’, donated by our Sponsor, Glenn of Infinity International Ltd. Many thanks Glenn. The Management side will be the first to have their name emblazoned on the new Shield, having beaten the Chairman by a mere 115 shots to 112. Yes

Folks, it came down to shot difference as both Squads achieved 7 points apiece, 3 wins each and one drawn match. This popular annual tussle was played in a spirit of great bonhomie, and at last the weather played no tricks to rain on our parade. Games over, we all trooped in to lunch, provided, as usual, by the Management, thank you Brian and Matt. Jan and

her team did us proud as we all tucked into some wellearned grub. After some merry banter, the Shield was presented to the Management, aka Brian Taylor, and once engraved will join the other trophies in the display case. Photos were taken of the Winners and the Runners-Up to bring to an end a thoroughly enjoyable competition, ably organised by Mike O’Neill.
