BIN STRIKE SCRAPPED

AN INDEFINITE strike by Orihuela refuse collectors and street cleaners scheduled to start next week, has been called off after unions reached an agreement with Orihuela council on Monday. The stoppage would have coincided with the busy Easter holiday period, though Orihuela council boldly claimed that they would have maintained 75 per cent of the refuse service during Semana Santa. The deal was struck after workers on Monday backed earlier strike votes, after rejecting a preliminary agreement that was thrashed out on Friday, because they wanted it formally approved with the signature of Orihuela officials.. The council quickly called in union chiefs after news of the latest strike vote, and put pen to paper confirming what had already been agreed, including enhanced working conditions at depots on the Orihuela Costa

and the Puente Alto industrial estate in Orihuela City. New toilets, as well a better water supply are to be installed within a fortnight at the Orihuela Costa depot, in addition to better safety clothing and a rise

in overtime payments, plus a chance to take leave during the busy summer period for the first time. Angel Lorente of the UGT union said:- “The staff didn´t trust an unsigned document and now we have it signed and approved”.

A LARGE hippopotamus decided to have a stroll round an Almeria region town after escaping from a circus last Friday. Much to the bemusement of onlookers, the animal´s walkabout included a trip to a roundabout in the coastal resort of Roquetas de Mar, as well as grabbing a snack or two as it chewed on some grass. The hippo, called Pipo, had his escapade recorded by passers-by and downloaded to social media, with the local police saying that he had

got out from the Circa Roma Dola travelling circus, with their workers managing to recapture him. It´s been claimed that it was not the first time that Pipo had escaped, with lobby groups and some politicians criticising the way the circus´s animals were looked after and housed. The Guardia Civil said that they had inspected the circus a few days earlier and were satisfied that regulations had been followed.

Tooled up thieves

NATIONAL Police got more than they bargained for when a car was stopped at a routine patrol in Elche and found to be carrying weaponry and an array of tools. The car had been spotted driving around the city and was not locally registered. The occupants were unable to give a clear

explanation of why they were in Elche and where they were going so the decision was made to search the vehicle. The officers found a pistol, ammunition and various tools and equipment consistent with house break-ins and arrested the group, three men and

a likely target and their kit included lock drills, screwdrivers and communication equipment.

Brits arrested for drug smuggling THE National Police have released details of the arrest of a British father and son at Alicante airport for suspected drug smuggling. A 22 year old man was stopped by agents on 4 April after they had reason to believe he was carrying illegal substances. The young man fled and after he was caught resisted arrest, leading to two officers being injured. When he was searched 200 grams of hashish was found in his posession and

further enquires also led them to discover that he was travelling with his father. The 50 year old had already boarded the plane, bound for London, and police delayed the flight in order to search him. They found a further 200 grams of hash in a bin next to the man, which they assumed he had disposed of when the officers boarded the plane. Both detainees are appearing in a criminal court in Murcia this week.

the prospect of the UK having to leave the EU without a deal on today, as MPs are still deadlocked over a deal. British prime minister, Theresa May, who had

post-Brexit relationship with the UK. “The important thing is to give British politics the time it needs to find its way out of a situation that stems from a referendum held three years ago,” he commented.

HOT PURSUIT RIDDLE British Climber Rescued Mountain black spot strikes again by Simon Russell

THE CATALUNYA region will not become independent or even get a referendum on the matter if the PSOE socialists are returned to power in this month´s general election, according to Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez. “No is no,” Sanchez told a PSOE rally on Sunday at Zaragoza, in the north-east

region of Aragon, “If there is a socialist government, there will be no independence in Catalunya, there will be no referendum for independence and the Spanish constitution in Catalunya will not be violated — that will not happen”, he added.

Meanwhile, the PSOE are easily set to become the largest party in Congress after the April 28th election, with 31.1 per cent of the votes, according to an opinion poll poll published on Monday in the ABC newspaper. That would net between 137 and 139 seats in the 350seat parliament, but short of a majority, unless he strikes

another deal with the far-left Podemos party. A coalition of three parties namely the Partido Popular, Ciudadanos, and the far-right Vox would get a total of would get 45.6 per cent of the votes, equivalent to between 149 and 158 seats, but this would also be short of the 176 seats needed for a majority.

Using scissors to cut the waistband of the trousers, they uncovered fifteen small packages, which after examination, were identified

as hashish, with a total weight of 90 grammes. The man was also arrested on crimes against public health and drug trafficking.

Airport drug seizures Civil guards at AlicanteElche Airport detained two Spanish citizens attempting to smuggle hashish out of the country last week, in two separate incidents. On the first occasion, the officers attached to the ODAISA, department of security, were alerted by suspicious parcels inside a suitcase, as it passed through an RX Security scanner. The owner of the suitcase was identified and intercepted at the boarding gate, as she was about to board a flight to Bremen in Germany. Once inside a separate room, the suitcase was opened to reveal 10 bags of marijuana inside, vacuum

packed, approximately 1,150 grams per packet, with a total weight of 11.3 kilogrammes. The detainee, a fifty eight year old Spanish woman was arrested for drug trafficking offences. On the other occasion, the officers intercepted a Spanish man, aged fifty one, who had passed through security, awaiting his flight to London Southend Airport to be called. Deciding to conduct a more thorough search, the agents discovered a series of bulges in the waistband of the detainee’s trousers that felt like small balls the size a nut.

Caught in Calpe by Simon Russell

A 28 year old British woman was arrested in Calpe last week under the terms of a European Order of Detention and Delivery for her extradition. It is understood that last year in the UK she was tried and found guilty of assault in 2016. She failed to return to court for sentencing and it was thought she had fled to Spain. Investigations led Alicante’s Judicial Police Brigade to believe she was residing in Calpe where they arrested her last weekend. She now faces extradition back to the UK for sentencing.

SPAIN welcomed over 10 million cruise ship passengers in 2018, a record figure, with six years of growth going back to 2012, when just seven and a half million passengers were recorded. Spain is now the second most visited country by cruise ship passengers in Europe, second only to Italy. Unsurprisingly the ports on Spain´s Mediterranean coast including Alicante, Cartagena and Valencia were the busiest, accounting for nearly 68 per cent of passengers last year, an annual rise of over 11 per cent.

PRETTY FLAMINGO by Simon Russell

THERE WAS a novel delay to an incoming flight at Mallorca´s Palma airport as an arriving Easyjet flight was held up in getting to its docking bay by a pink flamingo. Sunday´s novel incident saw the plane having to sound its horn as it was caught behind the slow-moving bird as it nonchalantly carried on walking. Wildlife experts were called, but bird eventually flew off from the airport as a team was mobilised to deal with it. Staff at the Palma terminal snapped multiple footage of the bird and it has now gone viral on social media.

THE heavy rain that hit parts (though not all) of the region last weekend and earlier this week caused the Tibi reservoir to overflow, creating a waterfall on its banks. However this does not mean that the water shortage crisis in the area is resolved. The capacity of the Tibi is much lower than was envisaged when it was

constructed as it has become clogged with sediment that have created banks within the reservoir, causing the overflow in one part of it while other places are still well below capacity. The 30 litres of rainfall in the Tibi area was actually much lower than other places with the Vall d’Ebo recording a whopping 240 litres.

Iraqi family using fake passports arrested

Border control police on duty at AlicanteElche Airport, detained six members of an Iraqi family, as they were about to board a flight to the UK last week. The National Police officers were alerted by airline ticketing staff, who became suspicious of the family as they checked in for their flight during the early hours of last Thursday morning. All six of the

passengers, five adults and one minor, presented Bulgarian passports to staff at the airline checkin desk. However, the ticket agents became suspicious as each of the documents appeared to have the same page altered in a similar way, leading them to believe the passports were false. When the police

passports. The five adults, aged between 19 and 69, were arrested for falsification of documents and released pending charges.

Financial planning for the future It is important to review your financial planning around once a year. You need to look long-term and not just focus on the year ahead. Planning to protect your wealth Good wealth management starts with establishing your goals and needs. A financial adviser can independently assess your risk appetite before building a diversified portfolio of investments to achieve your objectives within your risk tolerance. Make sure your arrangements are as tax-efficient as possible and your tax planning is up to date. Planning to maximise your pensions There are more choices than ever for your UK pensions, so spend some time reviewing your options. Always take personalised, regulated advice. If you are considering transferring into a QROPS, be aware that

although transfers to EU/EEA-based QROPS are currently tax-free, this could change after Brexit if the UK extends its 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’. Looking further afield for tourists THE Valencian Tourist Board has said that it is starting to throw its net wider to attract tourists, a move partly driven by the drop in visitors from the UK and fears that a hard Brexit will deter the British further. The largely untapped but potentially huge travel sectors in places such as India, Russia, the US, China and Japan are looking for gastronomy, art, heritage, history and nature according to research. Fiestas, sporting events and work congresses are all also all cited as reasons

DELAYS could be on the cards for the Easter holidays after Spanish airport staff are set to take part in two days of industrial action. Unions representing ground staff namely the Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) and Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), have called for two days of action on Sunday April 21st(Easter Day) and Wednesday April 24th. According to the unions, their members are not happy with clauses in their collective agreements affecting staff contracts when moving from one job to another. A union spokesman said:-”Staff involved will be those in ground handling services, aircraft and passengers, merchandise and mail, as well as the service of placing and removing of gangways, which connect the aircraft with the terminal.’ for the patient receiving it. Dr Juan Vial Carbo said that both patents had progressed well since the surgery which has only been carried out in two other Spanish hospitals. La Fe performed the second highest number of transplants across Spain in 2018, 315 in total including 24 heart and 93 liver transplants.

Altea Northern Gateway plans unveiled

Altea councillors have announced ambitious plans to transform the Northern, Porta d’Altea, gateway to the town. The 346,000 euro project, is designed to connect Plaza del Mercadillo, to the Casco Urbano, enabling easier access from the North, whilst directing motorists to an underused parking facility. Launching the Porta d’Altea project earlier this week, Altea Mayor, JaumeLlinares, Urbanism councillor, Imma Orozco and the Councillor for Infrastructure, Roque Ferrer, spoke of the need to revitalise

by Andy Mansell

the area around the municipal sports facility, allowing closer links to the rest of the town. “This project is born from the need to make visible, a parking lot of almost 400 places that is absolutely underutilised currently,” explained Orozco, “An action complicated by the level in which we manage to overcome the railroad,” she continued, with reference to the lack of pedestrian access points from the area into the town centre, which sits in a slightly more

elevated position. The car park will be provided with street lighting, water fountains, public toilets and a warehouse, to encourage its use throughout the year. “It is not a cheap project, but a very important and necessary action that will enhance parking, reduce costs, contribute to the sustainability of the municipality and dignify a space so degraded, improving the image of quality of our town,” she said. The Mayor spoke of his hope that the project would galvanize sport in the CamiAlgar area, eventually leading to the remodelling of the Sports Complex.

PERMISSION GRANTED

PLANNING permission for Barcelona´s iconic Sagrada Família cathedral has been granted 134 years on after a building licence was requested by the famous architect, Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí, who died in 1926 after being run over by a bus directly opposite his most famous creation, first sought planning permission for the cathedral in the year 1885, but the papers were never signed off. And the most globally-renowned building remains unfinished, although the construction board plans to have it completed by the year 2026, on the centenary of Gaudí’s death. Now, however, 21st-century planning terms apply to what began life as a late

19th-century structure: the developers are required to ‘urbanise’ the surrounding area, building necessary infrastructure, including improving public transport links to it. Barcelona’s mayor Ada Colau has set a price of 36 million euros, payable over 10 years, for upgrading roads and other facilities in the vicinity of the cathedral, although the actual cost of the planning permission has not been revealed. It is said that it has taken 134 years for it to be agreed because no previous local council had actually’sat down to negotiate’ with the developers to ‘agree and guarantee costs and plans’.

Happy ending for A very middle class scandal captured sea giants Free Willy x 100? The whale jail in Russia.

AS China’s economy begins to boom, many of the trappings of western society are also becoming more popular there. These include theme parks, with marine themed parks proving particularly popular with 76 built and another 25 in the pipeline. Not everyone gives much thought to where the larger creatures that are the main attraction come from, and the answer is quite disturbing - they are being captured and

trapped. Russia has been facing international condemnation after it transpired that around 100 whales, mainly belugas and killer whales, were being held in a “whale jail” for onward sale to Chinese marine parks. This harbour, trapping the creatures in with nets and walls, is described as a deeply unsuitable environment for them. The whales need open

seas and also to be able to move to warmer or cooler water at will. It now appears that the Kremlin is relenting and plans are being made to release the animals back into the wild. The creatures have been captured, in defiance of international laws on whaling, by private Russian companies. Ironically they are now worth more alive than dead, millions of dollars in some cases.

A well-known actress is among the dozens of people who could be facing jail time after admitting to their parts in a huge college admissions scandal in the US. Felicity Huffman, probably best known for her starring role in American Housewives as well as parts in series such as the X-files, has pleaded guilty to paying someone to falsify her daughter’s SAT scores, the key criteria for entrance into top colleges in the US. She is far from alone and prominent figures in law, finance, fashion and other middleclass American pursuits have also become embroiled in the scandal which has enthralled and appalled the public in equal measures. Universities across the US have been implicated in what is the biggest ever such case brought by the Department of Justice. Over 50 people have been charged so far, most of them unfamiliar with the inside of a courtroom - barring the half dozen top lawyers in

by Simon Russell

their number. Paying people to sit exams, lying about sporting prowess with the collusion of coaches and straightforward bribes to college admissions staff have all now come to the surface. Parents, college staff, sports coaches and outside “consultants” are all facing trial, something Ms Huffman has avoided by entering her guilty plea, although she has been warned a short prison term is likely. The affair has also raised many questions such as the pressure on kids to attend the top colleges and the fact that

once again money seems to get people what they want in the USA, even a top education that is paid for in part by the taxpayer. The other question concerns children that will have lost a place to their peers who have cheated, or at least their parents did on their behalf. One man, William Singer, is accused of being the mastermind behind the scandal. He is a senior college admissions counsellor who built a network of crooked parents, students and college staff across the country to operate the scheme which made him “millions of dollars”.

Felicity Huffman and her Oscar winning husband William H Macy, who is not implicated in the scandal.

Business & Finance Spanish economy downgraded

DESPITE gloomy forecasts Spanish olive oil manufacturers look set to produce about 40% more oil this year than the previous 12 months. However prices have slumped dramatically, down by 26% on the corresponding period in

Christine Lagarde with Spanish PM Sanchez.

C H R I S T I N E Lagarde, director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), this week included Spain in a somewhat gloomy fiscal forecast for the year ahead. She downgraded the countries growth estimate by a tenth, down to 2.1%,

2018. To further complicate matters other leading producers are seeing a major slump in production, 59% in Italy and 42% in Greece for example. This has led to a 43% increase in Spanish

SECOND VOTE VIEW SPAIN´S Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, has said that the demographic shift in Britain three years after its decision to leave the European Union could tip the scales in favour of remaining should a second referendum be held. The UK voted by a narrow margin in June 2016 to leave the EU but the Westminster politicians have been mired in disagreements on how to manage Brexit, with increasing calls for a second referendum to

break the deadlock. Spain has a keen interest in the eventual outcome of the saga, with many exports, especially of food products, going to the UK, whilst the Spanish economy depends heavily on tourism with Britons being the most numerous foreign visitors, as well as 300 thousand expats registered as living in the country. Borrell said another referendum did not guarantee a different

outcome. But a rise in the number of eligible young voters, who tended to vote remain, and a fall in the number of older voters, more likely to choose Brexit, could tip the balance, he said. “It’s true that, with young people in favour of remaining and older people leaving, just through the passing of these three years, with the demographic dynamics as they are, I’m sure the result would be different,” Borrell told Telecinco on Wednesday.

by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Capital city of France and internationally known as the city of love, the city of Paris captures the imagination of lovers and travellers worldwide and is known for its chic fashionable citizens just as much as its iconic tourist attractions. It’s hard to say where to start when visiting

Paris – art lovers will adore the Louvre, the largest art museum in the world, and home of the famous Mona Lisa. If the thought of trying to catch a glimpse of this famously enigmatic painting is offputting, try perhaps the Musee d’Orsay, the former railway station now turned museum on the left bank of the river Seine, where many of the Impressionist works can be seen. The museum itself is situated opposite the impressive Tu i lerie s Gardens which stretch from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde. Designed by Catherine de Medici in 1564, this is now a public park of over 20 h e c ta re s , and during the summer months, the host for the Tuileries

Fete, complete with rides, amusement park and candy-floss. You simply cannot go to Paris without also visiting the Eiffel Tower, a magnificent tower which was built for a World Fair in 1889, and proved so popular, it was decided not to dismantle it when the event finished. There are 4 pillars at the bottom where you can purchase tickets if you haveń t purchased in advance. The lifts only got to the 2nd floor, and from then on it’s on foot. The fitter amongst us can also start from the bottom on foot (this, not surprisingly, is the smallest queue when buying tickets!). Views from the top of this building are well worth the effort in getting there! Boat trips are also available a short distance from the tower, which gives a fascinating view of the city (as well as giving you the chance to catch your breath back after the hike up the Eiffel Tower!). These barge ships travel around the Isle de la Cité, one of two small natural islands in the middle of Seine, running through Paris. This is also the location of the Notre Dame (Our Lady) Cathedral, made famous in the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. The Cathedral is classed as one of the best examples of Gothic Architecture in the World. A short walk from this area of the city (although Paris has an excellent Metro system) and you can begin the climb to the Sacred Heart Basilica, a Romanesque-Byzantine structure built above the area of Montmartre. Montmartre itself is an area of cobbled streets, bars, cafes and hotels. Check if they offer accommodation by the week or by the hour, if you want to know what type of place you are staying in,

as this is quite close to Pariś Red Light area and of course, the most famous of all dance shows, the Moulin Rouge, the birthplace of the Can-Can dance. For the family holiday, doń t forget that Disneyland Paris is a short train/

Metro connection from the City. Offers constantly come and go for this – the current campaign is up to 25% discount and half board thrown in for free, so it certainly pays to know what the offers are as you can make quite a substantial saving making the booking at the right time! There are plenty of hotels in Paris, choosing amongst them is simply to choose which famous landmark you would like to be close to! There are also daily flights from Alicante to Paris Orly. If you plan to visit Disneyland Paris, you can book transfers from the airport to your hotel too. As you can imagine, the city is full of places to eat, from some of the most famous restaurants in the world to some of the best street food available. Most restaurants offer a Menu Prix Fixe, a set menu of 2-3 courses at a reasonable price. Remember too, that Paris works on a price/seating arrangement. A drink is most reasonable when stood at the bar, a bit more expensive if you sit in the Café and can be eye-watering if you sit out on the street. You have been warned!

SPANISH MORTGAGE TRENDS

Mortgage lending to home buyers in Spain was up six point one per cent in January to 19,390 new loans, according to the latest provisional figures from the Association of Spanish Notaries. The average new loan made in January had a value of â‚Ź135,616, an increase of nearly a per cent in a year. This suggests that as long as mortgage lending for residential acquisitions continues to rise, the property market will continue to flourish. Mortgage lending figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) that counts new mortgage loans inscribed in the Land Register a month or two after the notaries count them, confirms the current situation. The 12-month Euribor, the base rate used to calculate

interest payments on most mortgages in Spain, came in at -0.109 for its average in March, a slight fall on the previous month, but 42,9 per cent higher (less negative) than the same month a year before. As a result, borrowers in Spain with annually resetting Spanish mortgages will see their mortgage payments rise by around four euros per month for a typical â‚Ź120,000 loan with a 20 year term. On a quarterly basis Euribor went from -0.129 at the end of December 2018 to -0.109 at the end of the first quarter 2019, following a trend towards positive territory started in March last year.

Building towards a problem?

FOR the first time in eight years Spain built more housing than it sold in 2018, an indicator of a possible housing crash or signs of a healthy economy depending on your viewpoint. 100,000 permissions to build were granted last year, a 24% rise and well above the 90,000 properties that were sold over the same period. while in 2017 they were more or less equal paving the way for the latest figures. The Real Estate and Registrar Association calls the growth “very reasonable and sustained” and merely reflects a growing demand. Other analysts worry that an excess of available housing will inevitably lead to a slowdown or even another crash.

Malaga, plenty to keep people happy.

A FIRST-TIME BUYING GUIDE The Spanish property market has many quirks, and it pays to do your research before buying a home in Spain. The process of buying a property in Spain usually runs as follows. First, the buyer makes an offer, usually through the seller’s estate agent. If this is accepted, then the buyer and seller sign a preliminary contract (contrato privado de compravento) and the buyer pays a deposit, typically 10 per cent of the purchase price. The buyer then arranges any mortgage they require, although they should have already discussed their needs with the mortgage provider. The contract of sale (escritura de compravento) is usually signed in front of a notary, at which point the full

Changing living habits HERE in Spain people’s living arrangements are changing dramatically, most of it not out of choice. On the one hand a recent survey has shown that half the single occupation households in the country, about two million, are pensioners and about 40% of those are over 80. On the other side of the coin less young people are living alone and instead are staying with their parents, with over 53% of 25 to 34 year olds still at home.

by Simon Russell

This latter figure is one of the highest in the world and the overwhelming reason is lack of money and work rather than a desire to still have someone do your laundry and cook your meals. The elderly living alone also brings issues as people fall ill or lose mobility. However this is primarily to do with social changes and more dependence on the state rather than the family, as well as increased longevity.

Home alone - increasingly common for the elderly.

UGLY DUCKLING ROW Political correctness has gone crazy back in the UK where a supermarket chain apologised after it was accused of selling racist Easter chocolates. Waitrose was selling a trio of ducklings – white, milk and dark chocolate – with different names. While the white chocolate duckling was called ‘Fluffy’ and the milk chocolate one was called ‘Crispy’, the dark chocolate bird was called ‘Ugly’. That led a customer to share a picture of the £8 Easter gift saying that

they believed it was racist. Waitrose has now apologised after receiving complaints about the chocolate and said they had pulled the product from the shelves. The design comes from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling in which a brown duckling is mocked by others, and though that´s duck discrimination, I fail to see anything racist in what Waitrose was doing. The complainant should get a life.

Hip !Hip ! Hooray.

A lovely Sunday afternoon in September 2017 and I’m almost finished another sportif but this time I’m starting to feel my legs and hips not wanting to do any more without giving me grief. As soon as I stand up in the saddle I start to get a grinding feeling in my right hip, never had this before, what is it? What’s wrong? Anyway, I just put the pain behind me and got on with it finishing yet another great Spanish Sportif. I had soon forgotten all about it until a couple of weeks later I started to get a sore hip when walking or standing for long periods of time ie: ( all day in the shop ). I was cycling with the guys as usual 3 times per week with no pain until I stopped, it was sore and difficult to get off the bike. We regularly walk Chico along the

beach at la Marina in the winter and this particularly cold Sunday I found I couldn’t walk far at all as my hip was in agony giving me sore knees as well. We finally reached the cafe had our coffee and cake and went back to the car, boy was I glad to get there. Christmas that year seven of us had hired a wooden cabin up in the hills outside Valencia where we always go hill walking with the dogs. It was boxing day and we were up early looking forward to our walk which I had all marked out on the map. We had only gone 2km when my hip starting playing up and I was in excruciating pain, we all stopped for a rest and I told the others to continue that I was returning to the house to rest, Mathew

also came back with me as he had caught a cold. The others went off with Martin leading, 6 hours later they called me to go and get them as they were totally lost and miles off the planned route, just as well I hadn’t been drinking.

New year we went back to Scotland to see the family and I returned with a severe flu virus which bedded me for a few days. All my joints had seized up and I couldn’t walk so eventually I gave in and Lynn and Harry took me to A+E where I was given a Cortisone injection and sent to bed. Monday I had to go and see the Doctor about the virus so I told her about my hip pain also. She sent me for an x-ray and a couple of days later I’m in Torrievieja hospital seeing the Orthopedic surgeon who confirmed that I indeed had Arthritis in my Hip joint. I was given a course of painkillers and told to come back in 8 months for another x-ray and check up. By this time it was the end of October and I had the whole summer in unbearable uncomfortable pain but

just had to get on with it. When I finally saw the surgeon again, she said my hip had deteriorated very fast and that she was putting me forward for a new full Titanium hip replacement. I was so pleased but also scared at the same time. 3 months later I’m in for my operation at 7 am, February 7th( a day I’ll always remember ) everything went like clockwork and I was back in my very comfortable

en-suite room where Lynn was patiently waiting by 2 pm. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days with nurses checking me almost every hour. The treatment, staff, food etc at the hospital was fantastic I could not fault it. Once home I started my own physiotherapy sessions every day, the first week I was up and down the street on my zimmer frame until I was exhausted, second week 2 x sticks walking 5km a day, third week one stick and eventually no sticks still walking 5km a day , I started on the spinning bike on week 3 just doing 15mins a day then gradually up to 30 mins a day. By week 6 I had started on a small fold up the bike which was all I could manage progressing onto an e-bike for 2 weeks and week 8 I’m back out on my Pinarello and back at work full time. I have had no pain since I left the hospital, sometimes it feels uncomfortable if I overdo it but other than that I feel great. Last week 8I had to go back to see the surgeon for another x-ray and final assessment and she was delighted with my progress. This has been a life changer for me and I’m looking forward to enjoying this summer so if there is anyone out their thinking of getting it done what are you waiting for. A big thank you to Lynn, Harry, Mathew and Martin for keeping the shop going and for putting up with me. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8 am and cover between 90km and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge, looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637487377.

AND THE WINNER IS... The TWO LUCKY people walked away with food hampers, as Age Concern South held a raffle last weekend at Iceland´s store in Torrevieja. So many of the myths of the Brexiteers have unravelled in recent months, that I have lost track of them all. One of the classics is that the great Margaret Thatcher would have approved of the UK leaving the European Union. Nothing could have been further from the truth, especially as she was one of the strongest supporters of the Single Market. She was strongly against any form of referendum and never advocated to anybody during her time as PM that she was anti-EU. In fact she saw it as vital to British interests and enjoyed the sport of taking on her EU counterparts as she obtained a number of concessions. So, contrary to the Brexiteers view(along with most their claims), the facts about her and the EU just don´t stand up to scrutiny. She clearly would never have allowed this Brexit mess in the first place if she was still in power. Patrick Fullerton, Javea.

Your report last week about Costa Blanca hotel owners warning about a drop in British bookings this year due to Brexit is an absolute red-herring.

The Rojales cast.

by Alex Trelinski THE ROJALES Pantomime Group recently entertained the Orihuela Costa branch of the Royal British Legion by staging a Murder Mystery play. The Phoenix Nights restaurant in San Miguel de Salinas was the venue for the first time venture for the Rojales team, with the eighty-plus audience invited to fill in a form to name their murder

suspect. Money was raised for the RBL´s charities, whilst the Rojales group were proud to announce that Treasure Island will be their next pantomime in January. New members on or back stage are always welcome with more details available by sending an email to rojalespantomime@ gmail.com

NOT VERY SPORTING by Alex Trelinski THE ORIHUELA COSTA municipal sports centre closed its doors for nearly all users on Monday due to a row between the management company, UTE, and Orihuela council. UTE say the authority owes them more 200 thousand euros since August and that their staff have not been paid since December.

the money has been withheld for over seven months because they claim that UTE have broken their contract in providing services and improvements at the facility despite getting paid to do so. UTE pulled the plug on virtually all activities on Monday like the indoor swimming pool and the various courts and fields, with the exception of some preOrihuela council registered children´s have confirmed that activities.

British passenger numbers coming into Spain´s airports continue to rise, but they are looking for self-catering bargains, rather than some of the steep rates that have been charged by hotels in the last few years. I should now as I own a couple of holiday rental properties, and they´re already booked up for most of the next five months. As Turkey, Tunisia and other markets suffered due to terrorism, UK tourists switched to Spanish hotel packages and got a good deal. Then the hotels decided to hike up their prices and last year, people shopped around and went to other parts of the Med or to Turkey, where the rates are low, or went down the selfcatering route. Making a quick buck has back-fired on the hoteliers, and they are just hiding behind the fig leaf that is Brexit. Mary Stoneham, Benidorm.

The “hugging robbers” are still at it, as I was stopped in Quesada last week by an East European-sounding lady, who asked me for directions. I was cautious having read the reports and as she tried to embrace me, I backed off, and she then did a sprint that Usain Bolt would have been proud of! Michael Fearon, Quesada.

Check the health of your eyes for the World Health Day

SPECSAVERS Ópticas are urging people to have their eyes checked, as the World Health Day was on 7th April. Not only could this help preserve vision, but tests can pick up signs of other underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and even signs of brain tumours. Last year, the World Health Organisation estimated that there were 1.3 billion people living with some form of vision impairment. What’s more, 80% of all causes of visual impairment are considered avoidable.

half the time taken during an eye appointment involves testing sight – most of the time we are assessing the health of the eye itself, and signs of your wider health too.’ Opticians look for indicators of eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and general health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. He continues: ‘We encourage everyone to get their eyes checked every two years. As well as a check of your vision, a routine sight test might just reveal a more serious sight-threatening or wider health condition.’

Ulcers are long-lasting sores that take more than four to six weeks to heal. They usually develop on the inside of the leg, just above the ankle with the exception of arterial or diabetic ulcers which are more commonly found on the foot.

Symptoms The symptoms of a venous leg ulcer include pain, itching and swelling in the affected leg. There may also be discoloured or hardened skin around the ulcer, and the sore may produce a foul-smelling discharge.

Celebrity beauty tips are everywhere, all across the internet, stars telling us what they use to enhance their skin and bodies. Instagram posts on what they plaster on their faces to help them hold back the years without surgery, because none of them ever admit to that. Well, Brit actress Kate Beckinsale, 45, has been banging on about a new $650 dollar facial treatment promoted by a New York dermatologist, innocently entitled, the ‘Hollywood EGF facial’ – EGF supposedly means epidermal growth factor.

However, now here’s the bit that might make any male readers out there wince a little. The serum used is actually made up of ingredients derived from the circumcised foreskins of newborn babies in South Korea. Stem cells are harvested from foreskins and then cloned in a laboratory and injected in below the top layer of skin to encourage regeneration ….eughh! I’ll just leave this one out there ……… The puns are all yours!

Simon Cowell has been opening up on his plans for this year’s X Factor, which is set to undergo a complete overhaul after last year’s disastrous viewing figures. The new idea is to find celebrities from other , genres, like acting, sport etc and g sin y ead who can alr

e turn them into popstars, abl a ge for and s um alb l sel to new career in music. Cowell, who admitted he’s getting a real buzz from the show, said, “In the same way Pete Waterman made Kylie and Jason musical stars, and what I did with Robson and Jerome, I’d like to think

through the process we’ll find someone who can sell records rather than just doing the show as a stunt.” Before you get too excited Simon, remember for every Kylie, there was a Sam Fox, or a Mandy Smith, or a Pat & Mick, or a Nick Berry, or a Bill Tarmey, or …… Need I go on!

For every Kylie there’s a Sam...

Schoolboy sniggers at Maya Schoolboy humour is still alive and well in the UK, judging by an April Fool’s Day prank played on Radio 1’s morning DJ, Maya Jama. The host got caught hook, line and sinker, by a good old fashioned double entendre, when a listener messaged in asking for a request. Maya didn’t even flinch as she read out a message from “Hugh” that said: “Hugh Janus, your son or daughter loves you, they’ve

said that. Very cute.” Got it? Well the DJ didn’t and it took a few tweets from her clued up listeners to point the gaffe out. Seeing the funny side, Maya, who has clearly never watched The Simpsons, tweeted, “My first trick name blooper on Radio 1. He got me good.” Could have been worse love …… anyone remember the movie Porky’s?

Thrones to end beautifully

Just to be clear from the beginning, I am not a Game of Thrones fan and freely admit to know nothing about the plots and characters of the phenomenally successful series. I mean, I’ve heard others talk excitedly about characters like Jon Snow and Arya Stark (yaaaawwwnnnnn!) and it’s not like I haven’t tried, but I’m normally sound asleep by the time the theme music and opening credits are over. Anyway, that’s just me, as I know GOT fans can’t wait for the start of the next and final season of the show, due to air soon. So, for artistic purposes I listened to an interview with Maisie Williams, who’s played strong-willed Arya for

almost 10 years since she was 11. Don’t worry, I’m not going to issue a spoiler alert here, but the 21 year old actress did give a little hint about the ending, admitting, on the Lorraine Today show, that, “The last chapter was really beautiful and I’m going to miss it,” she said, adding, “I don’t remember what my life was like before this show. I just had no idea, really, of how big it was going to get.” Aaaaaaww how sweet, it’s going to be a happy ending, Maisie can go off and have a career after GOT and she ain’t going to end up like poor old Ken Barlow, riding a horse around in the snow, wearing animal furs when she’s 82.

Maisie has played Arya since she was 10

Drop Quotes

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Think of how much that would change the world for unwanted pets...especially if it were to become a global trend.”

All Square:- Battling Monte share the spoils. Cross valley rivals Racing San Miguel, were the opponents at the neutral venue in Algorfa last Sunday. Another week, another “must win” game started in a lively fashion, with Monte utilising their usual efficient closing down tactic and San Miguel seemingly happy to knock the ball between the backs. Custodian Carlos was called to action on several occasions as San Miguel slowly grew in confidence but Monte stuck stoically to their task. The half petered out, but with the scores level, Monte were pleased with their efforts. HT: CD Montesinos 0 – 0 Racing San Miguel Within 5 minutes of the restart, Carlos again had to be sharp, saving from another one-on-one, San Miguel were slowly turning

the screw and it was surely only a matter of time before Monte’s luck ran out and it did on 70 minutes. While Monte were crowded in the attacking third, a slip by wing-back Daniel on the half way line, let in a breaking San Miguel attacker who raced forward, drew Carlos, and passed to a team-mate to slide the ball home. Far from lying down though, the goal spurred on Monte and they raised their game yet again, chasing and harrying and generally making their opposition uncomfortable in all areas of the pitch. On the 77th minute their efforts were justly rewarded when intense Monte pressure, resulted in David nonchalantly clipping the ball into the net. Cue delirious scenes both on and

off the pitch. Monte had clawed their way back into the match. With their slender lead gone, San Miguel upped the tempo again and pressured Monte, who were dropping deeper and deeper as the half ran to its conclusion. But Monte held firm, riding their luck at times, but stolid in protecting their hard won point. With other results not doing Monte any favours, anything from this game should be considered a bonus, but in a sense, the fighting performance clearly showed that this team has enough in it’s locker to stay the distance. Monte’s next game is away at CF Rafal, full details be forwardeed when known.

Local Sports

Struggling Monte Fail to Finish On another “must win” day for Montesinos, it was profligacy in front of goal as much as sleepy defending that meant they came away with nothing from this relatively early starting game. The day itself was more like the UK in March, i.e. very wet and windy, than the usual sunshine blessings we are accustomed to on the Costa Blanca. Monte fell behind to a sloppy goal and it was a combination of the excellent Carlos Lorente and Jesus David that brought them deservedly level on the half hour. Lacking an obvious “target man”, Monte were heavily reliant on midfielders joining Carlos Lorente upfront. A glaring miss by the normally reliable Maccan brought the half to an end, both teams level. HT: Santa Pola CF 1 – 1

CD Montesinos The second period saw Santa Pola in the ascendancy, Monte struggling both with the dreadful conditions and the relentless home attacks down both flanks.A slew of substitutions for both sides caused obvious disruptions and eventually the game settled into an end to end one, with both teams living dangerously. The better opportunities fell to Monte, but time after time, shots were wayward or straight at the keeper. On another day these might have gone in, but this was not another day. However, with a monotonous inevitability, Monte’s luck ran out when following yet another moment of indecision and failure to clear a loose ball in the box, a Santa Pola player poked the loose ball home. es that fell their way and ultimately, paid the price. With the “home” derby against cross valley rivals Racing San Miguel looming, Monte have almost no time to lick their wounds before continuing the search for the elusive points they need to remain in the division. On this showing, that may have to come from the failure of others. CD Montesinos will play a “home” game against Racing San Miguel, at 5.00pm on Sunday 7th April 2019. The “home” game will be played at Polideportivo Municipal “ Juan Carlos 1”, in ALGORFA. The game will be sponsored by The 3 Amigos. Travelling supporters to meet at Bar Tambalache, Los Montesinos at 4.00pm.

RACE #1000

Formula 1 reaches its 1,000-race at this Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, where Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will try to erase last month´s Bahrain heartache with a maiden victory. Leclerc´s Ferrari agonisingly suffered an engine problem with nine laps to go, leaving Lewis Hamilton to sweep up for a win in Bahrain. Designed to look like the Chinese symbol for “shang”, meaning upwards, and with a flat-out straight for almost one point four kilometres, the Shanghai International Circuit has proved a happy hunting ground for world

champion Hamilton, who has five victories there three for Mercedes and two for McLaren. For Sebastian Vettel, there are creeping doubts that the German may not be as strong as last season and the 31-year-old has something to prove in Shanghai, where he has won just once before. Daniel Ricciardo won this race last year for Red Bull but the Australian is finding life tough at Renault after back-to-back retirements. The race starts at 8.10 am this Sunday.

SURE FIRE BET The 2019 MotoGP World Championship goes Stateside this weekend with the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas hosting the third race of the season. Spain´s world champion Marc Marquez is the hot favourite on the back of winning in Argentina, and

he has qualified on pole and won all six MotoGP races at the Circuit of the Americas, Introduced to the calendar in 2013, the Circuit of the Americas offers an interesting mix of tight and technical turns in the first

sector and the two highspeed straights split by the tight turn 11. Marc Marquez is understandably looking forward to his Texan weekend, but is leaving nothing to chance:- “Austin is one of my favourite tracks; these counter-clockwise circuits

Quesada Bowls Club Report The Summer season started this week, and after the deluge of rain on Sunday, the South Alicante Summer league began on Monday with all the extremes of weather - sun, cloud, wind and rain. It was also a day of extremes for the Quesada squads - the Blenheims won the match against the Lancasters 12-0 points and 118-70 shots. A great start for the Blenheims, commiserations to the Lancasters, but plenty of time to redeem themselves in the weeks to come. With one more week left to play in the winter league, Quesada continued to consolidate their position of 4th in the table, with a win of 10-2 points and 88-68 shots against San Miguel. Meanwhile in the VCL league QBC Tigers hosted San Miguel Deputies and managed a creditable result against a strong San Miguel team. The Deputies won the match 8-4 points and 86-79 shots. The Lions were away to San Miguel Sherrifs but

always seem to suit my style the best. Although we have achieved a lot of success there in the past, we will work as we always do from Free Practice 1 and remain focused. Every year when you go to a track there are new things to understand and adapt to.”

Villajoyosa CF gave themselves a big boost to book a play-off place in Preferente Group Four, as a 57th minute Botella goal gave them a one-nil win over leaders CF Intercity. It was Intercity´s third one-nil defeat in four outings, but they remain five points clear at the top, ahead of Hercules B who drew one-all away to play-off contenders CD Almoradi. Villajoyosa remain third, but a point clear of CFI Alicante, who thrashed Alicante University six-one. At the other end of the table, CD Benidorm still remain just above the drop zone after a disappointing three-two defeat at bottom side Villena

CF, who recorded only their fifth win of the season. CD Torrevieja remain second-bottom, three points behind Benidorm, after drawing four-four with Callosa, whilst Aspe UD continue to occupy the third relegation slot, after a four-nil drubbing away to UD Horadada. This weekend´s matches include CF Intercity at home to Redovan, Hercules entertaining UD Horadada, and Villajoyosa away to struggling Aspe, with CD Almoradi on the road to Elda Industrial. At the bottom, Benidorm CD go to Orihuela B, and there´s a Saturday trip for Torrevieja to Alicante University.

came away with a well-earned 6-6 draw. A very close match, the two teams drew on two rinks, QBC ladies singles lost by only one shot and QBC won the shots overall 83-78. What a good start to the season for the Lions! To make way for the Champion of Champions matches, there’s no Summer League games for the next two weeks. Good luck to the QBC players. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. Héctor Barberá from Dos Aquas in Valencia Province has dramatically quit motorbike racing, with his bike being reported as stolen. The rider said that his team, Team Toth, were not getting the promised backing from their sponsor, with his motor mysteriously “doing a runner” from a track pit lane. Barberá made the announcement on social media ahead of Sunday´s Supersport world championship race weekend in Aragon, where

by Alex Trelinski

his bike disappeared. The 32-year-old switched to Supersport racing last year after being dropped by Moto2 team Pons Racing due to a drink-driving charge and loss of his licence. He subsequently joined Team Toth, and was lying fourth in the 2019 champìonship. Barberá said the theft was the last straw in a series of setbacks that left him angry

and disappointed and he bemoaned the lack of resources for his his team, and criticised the team sponsor. Team Toth in turn, reported the case of the missing bike to the Guardia Civil and said in a statement that “it is rare that a rider decides not to compete in a race and then a bike goes missing”. It may not be totally the end of the road for Barberá, as his social media post didn´t totally close the door on a possible return to the sport.

SUFFERING VICTORY

SAM´S THE MAN

Twenty-year-old Sam Curran has become the youngest Englishman in a century to be named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year. The all-rounder was named alongside his international team-mates Jos Buttler and Rory Burns. England batter Tammy Beaumont and India captain

Virat Kohli complete the list. Kohli was also named the leading cricketer in the world, while compatriot Smriti Mandhana was the world’s leading women’s cricketer. Excluding 1918 and 1919 when schoolboy cricketers

were honoured after the end of World War One, only Jack Crawford, who was 19 when he was named as one of the five leading cricketers in 1907, was a younger recipient than Curran. The Cricketer of the Year award can only be won once by a player in their career and is based on performances in the English summer.

with 13 titles and a doubles crown to his name. The clay court specialist made his professional debut back in 2003, and his titles include two victories in the Valencia Open, and he reached four Grand Slam quarter-finals, namely three

in the French Open, and once in Australia some six years ago. Almagro´s tennis days are far from over, as he will stay in the area in his new job as the director of the La Manga Club Tennis Academy on the Mar Menor.

ALMAGRO´S FAREWELL

by Alex Trelinski

England manager Phil Neville revealed he wanted to see his players “suffer” in their narrow friendly win over Spain on Tuesday night to prepare them for this summer’s World Cup. Beth Mead finished off a smart team move to give the Lionesses the half-time lead at Swindon with Ellen White thrashing home just seconds after the restart.

by Alex Trelinski

Spain pulled one back through substitute Aitana Bonmati but England played out the remainder of the contest to seal a 2-1 victory, in a match which featured multiple substitutions. “For us to do well at a World Cup, there are games when we have to dig in and block shots – that is what I

wanted to see and I just said to them that I thought they could have done it better, the next step is to dig in but show composure as well”, said Neville England have two further warm-up matches against Denmark and New Zealand, before their World Cup campaign gets under way with a June 9th clash against Scotland in France.

Murcia region tennis star Nicolás Almagro has retired from the sport at the age of 33, after losing to Mario Vilella, 6-2, 6-2, on Tuesday in the first round of his home town event, the ATP Challenger Open in Murcia City. The Murcian tennis player, currently with a world ranking of 845, had announced on Monday that he would end his career at home, and was cheered on by local fans at the Murcia Tennis Club 1919, where he returned to action after being out with injury for five months.. It was all in stark contrast to Almagro once being the world number nine back in 2011, and he´s finished off

REDS VERSUS BLUES AFTER the excitement of the Champions League, it´s back to the bread and butter stuff of the Premier League title chase this weekend, with leaders Liverpool, boosted by their first leg quarter-final win over Porto, welcoming third-placed Chelsea to Anfield this Sunday afternoon. A stunning late strike from Daniel Sturridge way back in September rescued a point for the Reds at Stamford Bridge. It´s strange how the knives were out not that long ago for Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, but the blades could be sharpened again, if his side don´t qualify for the Champions League.

by Alex Trelinski

They may have booked an FA Cup final spot, but Manchester City will be hurt after their Champions League defeat at Spurs, and despite having a game in hand over Liverpool, they won´t necessarily be relishing a tricky Sunday trip to mid-table Crystal Palace. Assuming Chelsea lose at Liverpool on Sunday, they will do so in the almost certain knowledge that Spurs would have already overhauled them by beating relegated Huddersfield a day earlier, and Arsenal could do the same(on goal difference)

if they beat FA Cup final-bound Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday. Manchester United´s reducing chances of getting into a Champions League berth now depend on other teams slipping up, as well needing to win themselves, as they entertain West Ham this Saturday evening. At the bottom, there are two matches in four days to see if Cardiff can realistically avoid joining Huddersfield and Fulham in the Championship next season, starting with a trip to Burnley tomorrow, and then a home clash against Brighton on Tuesday.

“EUROCOPA” WALKING FOOTBALL ALBUFEIRA : PORTUGAL 2019

Monday and Tuesday 1st & 2nd April saw Algarve Football Tours hold their 4th Annual Competition with a total of 21 teams competing with Esquina Park Rangers from Ciudad Quesada, Luso Africa, Oxford Utd, Sheffield Utd, Clacton Knights, East Algarve Olhao, Fulham F.C., Benfica C.F., Rushden & Diamonds and Browns W.F.C. Around 1500 supporters filled the Ferreiras Stadium to witness two days of “Walking Football”. Esquina Park Rangers, kindly sponsored by Bar Esquina in Ciudad Quesada, entered a team of nine players, along with their ever supporting “W.A.G.s”. There were three leagues with seven teams competing for the top two positions with the two best third places going through to the final stages. Esquina Park Rangers won 4, lost 1 and drew 1 on the first day, qualifying for Day Two with their superior goal difference.

Day Two started with a defeat to the favourites Luso Africa who are the masters of Walking Football. Winning our second and third games with some ease put us into the semi-finals. We were then facing the mighty Sheffield United who had previously won the competition. Winning would see us into the final. A close and hard-fought game with our lads giving it our all, Sheffield Utd with more experience, nicked it with one goal. Esquina Park Rangers then played Clacton Knights for Third and Fourth Place. With our lads tiring, we were defeated 2-1 in another hardfought match. The final was won on penalties by Luso Africa defeating Sheffield United. A great performance from all the players and the travelling “W.A.G.s”. Hopefully next year we can go all the way. The photo above is the Esquina Park Rangers team with their “W.A.G.s”.
