Your Weekend Starts Here!

EXPAT HEALTH SCARE BRITISH retirees living in the European Union have been officially warned by the UK government to investigate taking out private health insurance from the end of next month in case of a no-deal Brexit, despite a very different signal coming out of the Spanish government. The stern UK warning comes as growing numbers of people are taking out healthcare policies in Spain, with an increase of over a million policy holders since 2013. One in five households in Spain now have health insurance at an average cost of nearly 1,200 euros, with a rise of almost six per cent in customers over the last year, taking the total to around 12 million people. Experts say the big rises

are down to savage cuts made seven years ago to the public health system, resulting in longer waiting lists for operations. The UK government´s “advice” to retirees in the EU to look at going “private”was cast in stark terms, stating that those who had signed an “S1” form could be affected after March 29th. In contrast, the Spanish government has pledged that that nothing will change if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal at the end of March. The Madrid administration have posted that view on their official website and is set to pass a Royal Decree this month to ensure the rights of all British

citizens(including healthcare provision for retirees), remain roughly the same in a worst case scenario. Nevertheless, health

What you should expect

from a good financial advisor? REGULATION: Before your appointment, it is essential you check the regulation of the firm you are speaking to. Chorus make this as easy as possible – our license numbers are listed on all our articles, advertising, business cards, email footers, and, via our website’s ‘Regulation’ tab, you can directly visit our listings on the websites of the UK FCA, the Gibraltar FSC and the Spanish DGS and CNMV, and see details of all our various licenses and permissions. There should never be any confusion or doubt as to how the firm you are speaking to is regulated, and there is never an excuse not to display this clearly in all literature. If you can’t find license numbers and verify them yourself, simply walk away.

FEES: Your advisor should always tell you very clearly how they are remunerated and give you an exact breakdown of all fees. Ensure you have the following fees confirmed before signing anything: 1.-The investment vehicle or ‘wrapper’, for example, a platform or bond, will normally be structured in one of two ways: No tie-in, but a set-up fee payable to your advisor, or an annual fee that is tied-in for a set number of years. You shouldn’t normally see both a tie-in and a set-up fee, as this may mean your advisor is trying to pay themselves twice! If you are being tied-in, always get a likefor-like quote elsewhere before signing any

At Chorus, to make this as easy The reality is, as IFAs we need to win your as possible, we can even do this by email, business – that means by giving you the and promise to provide it within 24 hours. best proposal, out of say 2-3 firms you go to. Fair annual fees for the highest quality, FCA regulated funds are between 0.2% and 1.2% per annum, any more than this should cause concern.

Imagine if you went to a shopping mall here in Spain, and they charged you before you could even enter the shop and see the products and prices on offer!! So, before you sign anything or agree to pay any fees, ask for the total annual % of your proposal to be confirmed in writing (by email is fine – but again, are those regulatory details in their email footer??). I do often feel that as Brits we are too afraid to offend, and this can really cost us. Your entire financial future is potentially at stake when you sign up with an IFA. You might be sat in an incredibly impressive office, with a company that smacks of prestige and reputation, but some of the most notorious confidence tricksters in history have done exactly that. Never be afraid to ask questions, and never fail to do your own due diligence, or seek a second opinion, on any recommendation being made to you. This is simply too important for you to take any chances. Chorus will always consult for free, and you will only commit to fees once all details are confirmed and you are happy to move ahead with a proposal. Any proposal we make also benefits from a 30-day cooling off period, during which time you can cancel in full without paying any fees. Trauma Doctor escapes jail

A doctor who was originally sentenced to two years in jail for negligence which led to a promising gymnast losing a leg, has had his jail sentence quashed but has been heavily fined. The court in Vigo heard how three errors from the unnamed traumatologist had resulted in 16 year old Desiree Vila having to have a leg amputated, something that would have been avoided without the errors made. Desiree was training to take part in the European gymnastic championships and was regarded as one of Spain’s most promising young athletes. The doctor had to pay compensation amounting to 2.1 million Euros, although much of this will be paid from insurance and liability funds at the hospital.

Lawyer in the dock THE trial has started in Castellon of a lawyer accused of defrauding the son of a murdered woman of the compensation he had received for the crime. In March 2009 a woman named Fabiola was killed by her partner Domingo Velazquez, who is serving 19 years in prison for the killing. She left behind a son, Daniel,

who was 20 at the time of the murder. Daniel was approached by a lawyer from Madrid, Jose Javier Sanchez, who said he worked for the Spanish Association of Gender Violence and would represent Daniel in the trial. However, Sanchez has been

accused of embezzling €54,000 paid to Daniel for public aid. Prosecutors say the lawyer took advantage of Daniel’s youth and vulnerability to defraud the cash for his own purposes by gaining power of attorney. They are asking for four and a half years in jail and full repayment of the €54,000 if Sanchez is found guilty.

Specsavers Ópticas and the Lions Club renew their agreement The nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain have renewed their commitment to support the Lions Clubs in their region. All stores are collecting used glasses and have made agreements with their local Lions groups to distribute those glasses to people who need them in developing countries. Specsavers Ópticas and the Lions Club share the same goal – to end avoidable blindness and improve people’s vision, by ensuring everyone has access to glasses. On the Costa Blanca, the six Specsavers Ópticas stores are working with their local Lions Clubs and have made agreements with the Calpe and Benissa Lions, the Benidorm Lions and the Elche Lions Club, to collect unwanted glasses and put them to good use. Specsavers Ópticas customers donate their old glasses at the store and these are picked up by Lions Club volunteers, then sent to the Melvin Jones glasses recycling centre

near Alicante. At the centre, they clean, repair and sort the glasses into the different prescriptions and then send the glasses to where they can be used again. They send around 100,000 pairs of glasses to over 30 countries each year, predominantly in Latin America, Africa and Asia. “We take it for granted that we can correct our vision with a pair of glasses if our sight is bad” explained Francisco Jurado Director of Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia, “but in many parts of the world people don’t have that luxury and poor eye sight can make life very difficult for vulnerable people. Having a pair of glasses can really change someone’s life, by allowing them to return to work, or to continue their studies. This is why we are delighted to renew our agreement with the Lions Club to donate unwanted glasses and put them to good use.”

The Director of Melvin Jones glasses recycling centre, Antonio Sansano, joined Gemma Rodriguez from Elche Lions Club to collect over 1,000 glasses which were donated

by Specsavers Ópticas customers in Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura in December and Carole Saunders from Calpe and Benissa Lions picked up a further ten boxes of glasses

from Specsavers Ópticas in Javea and Calpe. During these collections, the Directors and the charity pledged to work together to ensure more people in developing countries have access to the glasses they so desperately need. Gemma Rodriguez of the Elche Lions Club commented, “collaborations like these are so important to improve the life of millions of people, who are unable to lead a full life, as they can’t afford a pair of glasses. We aim to collect as many glasses as possible and work alongside charities and groups who make sure the glasses reach those who really need them.” You can drop your unwanted glasses off at any of the six Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca; in Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and the new store in La Zenia. History close to the surface WORKS in Denia to lay gas pipes on Calle Pare Pere has uncovered a 900 year old Islamic wall, just 30 centimetres below the road surface. When excavating historically sensitive areas companies are obliged to have an archaeologist with them and the professional who had that role, Silvia Ruiz, spotted the wall shortly after the works had started. The structure goes back to the origins of Denia from the 12th century Almohad period and is 1.70 meters wide and built of large masonry blocks

held together with mud and brick, an early form of concrete. Although archaeologists knew that there was a good chance that the wall was still intact in this part of the city this is the first fragment uncovered and would have marked the perimeter of the old medina, or walled city. It is now hoped further fragments can be found while it is likely that the Moorish cemetery is also close by as it would usually have been located just outside the city walls.

A COMPLAINT from a Moroccan youngster to the Guardia Civil in San Pedro del Pinatar, has led to the arrest of five people accused of being involved in a child trafficking gang. Operation Nursery was launched in August after the Moroccan met with Guardia officers in San Pedro. The group would target

youngsters that were shipped in illegally to Spain, and had already been detained at a government centre at La Linea, just across the border from Gibraltar. The centre allowed people to come and go, and gang members would approach residents with offers of being able to “get them home” and to “give them everything they needed”. Victims, like the young Moroccan were then taken to a

large isolated building in Pueblo Real and kept in poor conditions, and then transferred to various areas of Spain including Murcia City, Madrid, and Barcelona. The gang would make contact with the parents of the youngsters and ask for payments of up to 500 euros for them to be “released”. No details about those arrested have been made public, but they are being charged with a string of offences including illegal detention as well as crimes against public health and foreign nationals.

BARON´S PRISON RETURN by Alex Trelinski

A WELL-KNOWN drug baron and several members of his family have been jailed this week. A court in Pontevedra, in the northwestern Galicia region, jailed Sito Minanco for four years and fined him six million euros for laundering drug money via an estate agency. Four other defendants -- his ex-wife, his eldest daughter, a former sister-in-law and a business associate -- all received the same sentence. Minanco, real name Jose Ramon Prado Bugallo, is one of Spain´s most notorious drug traffickers, having been twice convicted and jailed in the past, spending 17 years behind bars. From the 1980s onwards Minanco, now 63, built up his empire in Galicia and the trial dealt with allegations dating as far back as 1988. When police arrested him a year ago in the southern city of Algericas, he was still on parole from his last conviction. Investigators said he was trying to get back into the cocaine trade that made him a millionaire.

last Thursday night after a distraught woman rang the National Police to say her son had cut his throat and was bleeding badly. Two

agents were first on the scene at the cities beach area and found the man on the sofa, bleeding profusely from a neck wound. He was very pale and shivering; while urgent medical assistance was requested the officers blocked the wound with a sterile gauze and managed to staunch the flow of blood. When the ambulance arrived the 20 year old was transferred to hospital where doctors said that the police action had probably saved his life. Sources close to the case say that the man may have consumed a synthetic drug which can trigger delusions and hallucinations.

Wednesday January 17th and the woman was apparently drugged and stayed in Orihuela until the Sunday morning, when she managed to escape from the house and attracted the attention of a passing motorist. A medical examination at a hospital in Murcia City suggested that the woman had been sexually assaulted.

THREE Alicante residents who chartered a yacht in the Balearics and had not been heard of since 5 January have turned up safe and sound in Italy. The three rented the vessel in Palma de Mallorca and the son of one of them reported them missing after not hearing from his father or his companions for several days. However after being missing for almost a fortnight the boat was confirmed as being docked at a port in

southern Sicily. Apparently the crew got caught out in stormy weather, forcing them to make the unplanned detour after the main mast broke. There had been an extensive search for the vessel that involved several Mediterranean countries until the vessel was found. It has not been disclosed at this time why they were not in radio or phone contact with anyone.

POLICE are investigating why an 84 year old man was walking along the A-7 motorway near Elche, an act which ended in him being fatally struck by a car. The accident happened at kilometre 518 on Sunday afternoon when the man wandered into the traffic lane and was hit by a VW Golf heading in the Alicante direction, killing the pensioner instantly. As well as the fatality a 33 year old woman suffered hand injuries and a 34 year old man had various injuries while they also needed to be treated for shock. The pair were both transferred to Vinalopo hospital (Elche).

FAREWELL JULEN by Alex Trelinski

A TODDLER found dead at the bottom of a deep well in the Malaga area after a massive rescue operation was on Sunday buried next to his brother. Two-year-old Julen Rosello was interred alongside his brother Oliver who died in 2017 aged three after suffering cardiac problems. A crowd at the entrance to the cemetery in Malaga applauded as the little boy’s family arrived for the burial. The accident on January 13th sparked a nearly twoweek operation to try to locate Julen in the borehole that had been sunk illegally.

Despite hopes he might be found alive, rescuers eventually found his body early on Saturday morning. THE Valencian Superior Court has awarded €6,000 to the parents of a baby who lost the sight in one eye after surgical errors in Alicante General Hospital. Reliving the Titanic ALICANTE’S Culture Councillor said that she is confident that the new exhibition for the city announced this week will break visitor records for such an event. “Titanic:The Reconstruction” is to run in La Lonja from 22 May right through until 10 November, meaning it will be able to draw in summer tourists looking for a change from the beach as well as local residents. The centrpiece is a 12 metre long, 4.20 metre high reconstruction of the ill fated vessel while the exhibition itself will fill La Lonja’s spacious halls. The event is being run by the Titanic Foundation and has already visited several other cities in Spain with great success.

by Simon Russell

There are over 70 pieces on show, many of them from the original ship. These include a Brush D.24 motorcar from 1909 that was due to be shipped on the Titanic but did not travel, and is generally recognised as the oldest functioning car in the world. This exhibition follows on from the hugely successful “Van Gogh Alive” multi media event at La Lonja which over 60,000 people saw. Culture Councillor Maria Padilla said this showed the cities continued commitment to bring world class cultural events to Alicante, based in a space that had been abandoned for 30 years.

Man threatened to kill police A man who was arrested in Xativa (Valencia) for threatening to kill his female neighbour has almost certainly compounded his crime by also threatening to kill the police officers who had detained him. He first approached his neighbour accusing her of making noise at night, then made crude remarks

by Simon Russell

and threatened her. She was concerned enough to call the police; before they arrived the man returned and said he would kill her if she contacted the authorities. The police arrived at the scene shortly after and the defendant refused to co-operate or even open

his door. When they did gain entrance the man became aggressive and was arrested for this reason. Once in the police holding cell he allegedly shouted “xxxxing cops, I’ll find you in the street and kill you one by one”. The detainee, a Spaniard, has a lengthy police record said the authorities.

Cat killer arrested

AN escalating dispute between two neighbours in Benidorm has led to a man being charged for allegedly shooting one cat and wounding another. The dispute centred around the cats which the 41 year old detainee

by Simon Russell

said were continually entering his property. The Dutch owner of the cats found one creature dead earlier this month and another hurt; he contacted an animal association

saying he suspected his neighbour and an official complaint was then made to the police. They decided to charge a Russian national with animal abuse and have confiscated an air-gun as possible evidence.

Muggles also welcome to Harry Potter show! VALENCIA’S City of Arts and Sciences is in talks to host “Harry Potter: The Exhibition”, possibly as early as April this year. The hugely successful event inspired by the boy wizard and endorsed by his creator JK Rowling has been on a world tour that has taken in Chicago, Boston, Toronto, Singapore, New York Sydney, Paris and Tokyo. It’s most recent stop has been Madrid where 150,000 people saw the exhibition and tickets were regularly sold out. It is billed as a “magical and interactive experience” that is just like being at Hogwarts (the wizarding school) for muggles (non-wizards). Locations from the film

have been painstakingly recreated including dormitories, laboratories and classrooms while original props, costumes

and creatures are on display. The interactive elements include playing Quidditch, entering Hagrid’s cabin in the woods and taking part in Herbology classes.

Killed by her own car

POLICE have confirmed the death of a 54 year old woman who was run over by her own car on the ramp of her garage in Alicante City. The incident happened on Monday when she left the vehicle to open the garage door at around lunchtime. An investigation has been opened but the police think that

THE speed limit on most of the Valencian Communities roads that were previously 100 kmph has been reduced to 90 kmph from this week. The changes came into effect from 29 January and effects the National (N) roads in the Community, that is the N-332,

N-330, N-420, N-234, N-225 and N-340. Two thirds of the fatal accidents across Valencia last year were on these type of roads with speed being a major factor, both in causing accidents and increasing the risk of death or serious injury, promoting the change.

The last 100kph sign to be changed comes down.

Pensioner dies after residence fire

AN 83 year old woman has died in a fall that coincided with a fire at the care home where she was a resident. The incident began at around 11pm last Sunday after the emergency services were called out to a fire at the property located on Alicante’s Calle Juan XXIII. The fire had started in the room of one of the residents and

by Alex Trelinski

when investigating this the fire crew found the body of the woman on a lower balcony of the building. They believe she fell from the eighth floor where the fire had been located and lived in the room where the blaze started. An investigation has been

opened and the police say they are not ruling anything out at this stage, including suicide. The same care centre had to be completely evacuated three years ago after a fire which was later found to have been started by a cigarette butt. There are no reports of any other casualties or injuries in this latest incident.

Stop those snails! TWO men have been arrested in northern Valencia after being unable to prove how they had come by the 100 kilos of snails they were transporting. The pair were stopped in Burriana by the Citizens Service unit of the Autonomous Police which has been tasked with cracking down on the theft of flora and fauna across Valencia. The men had five 20 kilo mesh bags

of snails, many of which were identified as Helix aspersa, a protected species found around Cheste. The police had reason to believe the snails had been illegally harvested from natural parks for onward sale. The men are awaiting charges while the snails have been returned unharmed to their natural environment.

Bats to battle bugs CULLERA, in the province of Valencia. is introducing a novel way to control the town’s mosquito population - bats. The Environment Department approved project involves the installation of nesting boxes in various key areas to encourage the bats. Hugo Font, who is in charge of the project, states that natural biodiversity is an effective and environmentally friendly way of controlling pests such

as mosquitoes. Each bat can feed on up to 3,000 bugs a night and if the boxes are placed in areas where the creatures are a problem, such as marshes, orchards and industrial estates, they will become the main food source for them. Local bat colonies have also been in decline and this is another way of protecting them.

Wells to be covered

FOLLOWING on from the tragic death of toddler Julen, who fell down a borehole in Andalucia, Denia’s Environment Councillor Josep Crespo has confirmed that a number of wells on the Montgo Natural Park are to be covered. The wells have historical significance, having been built for a major agricultural settlement almost a century ago. Cami de la Colonia was originally built as an access road for the colony and although

long abandoned some of the farm buildings and houses are still standing, including the wells. However in light of the recent tragedy locals have taken to social media to express concerns about the dangers of the deep and narrow holes. The announcement by Denia council was made the same day a man and his dog died after falling down a well in Malaga.

A driver in Catalonia is facing a number of charges after being caught drunk driving in a car that was on fire while he had no licence. The incident happened in Reus at the weekend when police saw the blazing car being driven along a main road at about 7am. The driver finally noticed his car was on fire and stopped the vehicle then tried to extinguish the flames with his hands, unsurprisingly suffering burns.

by Simon Russell

The police wisely intervened at this stage and put out the fire using the patrol car’s extinguisher. They then breath tested the man who failed, while further enquiries showed he had no licence or insurance for the vehicle. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on his burns and later charged with several traffic offences.

Kidnappers arrested POLICE have arrested four men in their forties accused of kidnapping a man and threatening to kill him unless his family paid a ransom demand. The victim was snatched and taken to an Alicante hotel room then threatened at gunpoint. He was forced to call his brother, who lives in Toledo, asking for a sum of €10,000 but not able to explain what the money was for. The brother was suspicious and reported the incident to the Toledo National Police.

They had been able to determine that the victim was in an Alicante hotel but when their local colleagues went there the man had left, along with his kidnappers. They were able to trace him to San Juan after an extensive search and arrested the man he was with on suspicion of kidnapping. After speaking to the victim they arrested two other suspects and this week a fourth man was detained in Malaga. It is believed that the man who was kidnapped knew his captors and owed them money.

Frequent flyer. PM Sanchez on his taxpayer funded private plane.

SPAIN’S relatively new Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has taken some criticism for his seeming love of travel, much of it at taxpayer’s expense. Probably the most notorious example was last year when he took the private presidential plane to Valencia’s Benicassim music festival, something the PM justified saying the visit was official business, although he still made plenty of time to catch some of his favourite acts. His PSOE party have now hit back at critics

by Simon Russell

saying that former PM Mariano Rajoy did just as much travelling as Mr Sanchez but “with extra supplies of wine and whisky” for foreign trips. This followed on from Rajoy’s PP party calling Sanchez’ travel costs “an insulting spectacle of power”. The Prime Minister has trips to Central America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic lined up for this week, ostensibly to address the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

Innocent ad attracts unwanted advances

THE Minister of Education has weighed into a debate about the perils of social media after an 18 year old University of Alicante student posted a request for teaching work on a website and was bombarded with sexual advances from strangers. The teenager was looking to supplement her studies with private teaching work or childcare but clearly some men took this the wrong way, although her advert seemed quite clear. She started receiving

by Simon Russell

calls and messages about nude modelling, filming pornography and paid sex. The young woman is studying to be a children’s teacher and again made these qualifications clear. After taking to Twitter to share these advances there was a groundswell of support in her favour. This included from Vicent Marza, the Education Minister, saying that society needed to change fundamentally and many men in particular.

No IKEA any time soon

THE long vaunted plans to build an Ikea superstore in Alicante seem to have been put firmly on the back burner according to local politicians, both those for and against the idea. The recent opening of an Ikea “click and collect” in La Nucia facility means that the Swedish flat pack giants are happy that the area is adequately covered, at least for the time being. The proposal had become something of a political football, with

by Simon Russell

those for the new store talking about the 250 million Euro investment and up to 4,000 new jobs while those against pointed out the impact on both the environment and small local retailers. Supporters concede that La Nucia has “won the battle” by quietly opening the new collect only outlet while politicians argued about the pros and cons of the new store.

worried car plant euro white

SPAIN’S Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto, is set to visit Valencia’s Ford car factory on February 9, a few days prior to a planned visit by Ford’s senior European management team. She has said she wants to see first-hand what the situation is at the plant which is fearing cutbacks or even closure.

by Simon Russell

Ford recently announced a major restructuring of its European operations and their executive team are visiting all their major plants in Europe before making an announcement about their future on the continent, probably between April and June.

The factory, at Almussafes just outside Valencia City, employs around 7,000 people who in turn create an estimated five external jobs each. It accounts for over 8% of the Valencian Communities economic output and a closure or major cutback could have a devastating effect on the region.

UK´S HEALTH WARNING

seeking bilateral deals with other EU countries on the continuation of healthcare but so far none have been arranged, though the Spanish government has pledged to maintain British expat health cover and general rights in the extreme case of a no-deal Brexit.

Only last week, both governments signed a voting rights deal, and a Royal Decree over general British residency rights is expected to appear before the Spanish parliament this month as a defacto insurance policy in case of a no-deal Brexit. Pensioners who have paid in to the national insurance system for the qualifying number of years currently benefit from the “S1” reciprocal healthcare rules if they retire in the EU, EEA countries or Switzerland. An S1 certificate is available

to anyone in receipt of a state pension, and to some workers who are sent abroad on a temporary basis by their UK employers. The UK government stated in a little-publicised no-deal technical notice published this week: “An S1 certificate helps you and your dependents access healthcare in the EU/ EEA country where you live. If you have an S1 certificate, it will be valid until 29 March 2019. “After this date, the certificate may not be valid, depending on decisions by member states.” The technical notice goes to the extreme of advising retirees to investigate taking up private healthcare in the country they now reside, with Spain fortunately appearing to be one of the very few EU nations to offer reassurance to British expats that nothing will change if the worst comes to the worst come the end of March.

A controversial natural gas storage facility off the coast of Valencia looks set to close after an announcement this week by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera. The Castor warehouse is located 21 kilometres off the Castellon coast, close to a large natural gas deposit. However the process of injecting gas into the

facility has been blamed for around 500 earthquakes in the area, contributing to it’s closure in 2016 only three years after opening. Ms Ribera said “If we knew what we know now (regarding technology) the facility would not have been built”. The project has been dogged with controversy and has cost the government over a billion Euros according to some estimates.

Holding on to health staff

The UK, no longer attracting Spanish nurses.

A report from the Valencian Health Ministry has said that Brexit is almost certainly the reason why Spanish nursing staff have all but stopped moving to the UK to find work. 2014 saw 67 staff leave the region to find work in Britain, a figure that rose to 76 the following year. However in 2016, the year the UK voted to leave Europe,

by Simon Russell

this dropped sharply to 28. In 2017 the figure was 22 and last year only three nurses made the move. While many of the staff will be opting to stay in Spain, especially as the recession has ended, others are choosing to move to wealthier EU countries such as Germany.

Smart Investing As we are all now painfully aware, investing over the last year has become more and more challenging, we have become complacent and assumed that investments will always yield positive returns year on year (all be it small in some cases), but with the volatile times we now live in this is not the case and in 2018 we saw a doubledigit fall in most Market indices - some impossible to hedge against. In 2019 this volatility is likely to continue, we have economic forces at play, there is a slowdown in global growth with even Germany now on the brink of a recession. We have political volatility, something that

no one can hedge against. Brexit in the UK has meant that UK companies have put expansion and spending on hold as they are craving certainty before they move. This means UK equities are undervalued and represent excellent value so if and when Brexit is resolved then these values will rise. You have the US government shutdown and Chinese trade war. You have the French and Italian problems. We still have historically low interest rates across the Western world in the EU - it is still Zero. So whilst we hope 2019 will not be as bad as 2018, we fully expect that if there is any growth in investments it will be very low.

In these challenging times, it is advisable to get the best possible advice on offer when it comes to investing and wealth preservation. TENERIFE by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons

The largest of the Canary Islands with all-round sunny temperatures, there are direct flights to Tenerife 3-4 times a week from Alicante. If your destination is a cruise from the north of the island or a holiday in the areas of Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz, these flights are perfect as they land in the North of the island, meaning transfer time is around 15-20 minutes.

Heading south, we encounter the more p o p u l a r areas of Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, almost all of which are joined by a long coastal path, a large part of which is served by numerous bars and restaurants on one side, and stretches of black volcanic sand beaches on the other. It is wise to ensure that your package holiday includes transfers from the North to the South, as they can be a costly addition if not.

Take care when choosing your accommodation. Playa de las Americas is well known for its party atmosphere with places open late into the night, whereas Costa Adeje, close enough for walking distance, offers some respite from the party atmosphere. For those who prefer less exercise in their daily regime, however, you would be well to avoid ‘heart attack hill’, known for the steep incline between beach and hotels. Make sure you check! Los Cristianos is a quieter area further south, with fewer hotels

although there are still plenty of bars, shops and restaurants to help you enjoy your time. All of the areas are linked and offer public transport. An important consideration when choosing your hotel is that this is a family destination, and of course, a hugely Spanish destination. So if you are in search of peace and quiet, consider one of the many adults-only hotels. If, however, you are a family looking for a resort which offers everything, one of the best new resorts to open is in

the San Miguel de Abona area next to the golf Courses. The new Fantasia Bahia Principe opened its doors in November and offers a whole new level of allinclusive family entertainment. A mix of 5* Resort and Disney-like entertainment, this resort is sure to be a hit. Regardless of where you stay, Tenerife offers year-round activities for all ages. So if you have a passion for golf, soaking up the sun, enjoying the thrills of the enormous water park or visiting the Volcanic National Park of Teide, you are sure to not be disappointed.

Before I moved to Spain a decade ago, a dentist friend of mine would quote chapter and verse at me over why so few NHS dentists were left, because of the poor fees that they got. Life seems to have got even worse in the intervening years, as a man pulled out one of his own teeth after waiting more than 18 months to find an NHS dentist. David Woodhouse, 62, said he had been unable to get a spot at a surgery near his home in Truro,

Cornwall. And after waiting for more than a year, said the pain became too much to leave. The engineer said: ‘I had a loose one and it was causing me a little bit of pain, so I got the needle-nose pliers and out it came.’ Healthwatch Cornwall, the county’s health watchdog said some people had been waiting more than three years to register with a dentist. So much for experts bleating on about proper dental health if nobody can afford it in the first place!

Missing toddler “saved by bear”

World’s loneliest duck quacks his last

Trevor the Duck. RIP.

Bear necessities? Safe and well, little Casey Hathaway.

A missing child story that had a happy ending took another twist as the three year said he had been looked after by wild bears during his ordeal. Casey Hathaway went missing after playing in his grandmothers back garden in North Carolina last week. The garden backs onto thick woodland and a search started there after Casey had been reported missing. However this was hampered by sub-zero conditions, heavy rain and strong winds which became so serious the search was called off by officials for the safety of those involved.

by Matthew Richards

The search resumed in daylight but again without any signs of the toddler while the weather remained atrocious. However on day three someone walking in the woods called in saying they thought they had heard a child crying out. Searchers focused on the area and found Casey huddled in a bed of of thorns, wet, dehydrated and cold but miraculously otherwise fine. Although the authorities felt it was too soon to speak formally to the child about his

ordeal he did volunteer one piece of information - he had made friends with a bear who had looked after him. Many people, including animal behavioural experts are sceptical about this, saying it would be unprecedented for a wild bear. Supporters of the account point out that there is a large population of brown bears in the woods and it is difficult to see how an 11 kilo toddler could survive those conditions for three days without some form of help. The truth is we probably never will know the truth, but you can’t escape that the story had a happy ending, bear or no bear.

SAD news in the world of ducks as Trevor, a mallard dubbed the planet’s loneliest bird after becoming stranded on a remote Pacific island, died this week. He somehow ended up on the remote island of Niue which has no mallards or indeed ducks of any kind. He was found on the island after a major storm and it was thought he was blown badly off course, over 2,000 kilometres away from his probable destination of New Zealand. Trevor decided to make a go of it on Niue, which has a population of about 1,600 and is popular with tourists due to its pristine beaches

by Simon Russell

and diving. What it doesn’t have unfortunately is any rivers, streams or lakes so Trevor decided to make a large roadside puddle his home. He became popular with locals and the local fire brigade even ensured his puddle was kept topped up. While he didn’t have any other ducks within several hundred miles he did make good friends with a local chicken apparently. There had been talks of flying in a companion for Trevor but sadly he died this week, a long way from home.

Trouble brewing in South America

Blanket of despair

Nicolas Maduro (front centre) with his defence minister (right).

THE ongoing problem with toxic smog hanging over Bangkok has got so bad that the Thai city has ordered the closure of the cities 450 schools for safety reasons. The smog cloud has been present for several weeks with traffic fumes and factory pollution being the most likely cause. While authorities try to fight the problem, most shops have run out of face masks that worried residents have taken to using. People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid activities such as jogging. Cloud seeding used to trigger rainfall, and

drones which drop sugar solutions to help clear the air, have both been deployed to little effect. While the problem is not as bad as places such as New Delhi or parts of China, Bangkok regards itself as very much a “first world” city. There are concerns that both tourism and the financial trading centre, sectors heavily dependent on foreigners, will be badly hit if the smog continues to form a visible pall over the city. Heavy rain is the most sure-fire cure to the issue, prompting many locals to take to temples and churches praying for the downfall of the wet stuff.

AFTER one of the most turbulent weeks in the countries recent history, many think Venezuela may be on the brink of civil war, with some speculating that this could spread across other volatile South American states. Current president Nicolas Maduro first took power in 2013 and was re-elected earlier this month in an election that many countries judged to be illegitimate. In light of this opposition leader Juan Guaido swore himself in as interim president, a move that is starting to carry weight as many countries, including the US, have recognised him as the “official” leader. With echoes of past USA and South America relations, Maduro is

by Simon Russell

a socialist and many believe it is the long-standing American fear of left wingers in the region that have been behind their support of centre-right figure Guaido. The next big question is who will the Venezuelan military throw their weight behind, with the smart money being on Maduro although this is far from clear cut. One further concern is that Brazil has recently elected a belligerent far-right president who may be willing to put their considerable military strength behind a coup to unseat socialist Maduro, something that could ultimately lead to hugely bloody conflict in central South America.

It’s blossom time again Almond blossom in the Alcalali area last year.

Film Fair at Fitur Ximo Puig (centre right) and Mayor Arques unveil the new poster for the l’Alfas del Pi Film Festival.

THE almond blossom that starts to appear this time of year is both an early indicator that spring is not too far away and a beautiful sight in its own right. Town plans on view

PENDING infrastructure plans for Javea have been put on public display and are also available online until 21 February. About 200,000 square metres extra of land are set to be marked as protected including on the Montgo hillside, Cansalades and the Creu Armella area, partly due to the risk of flooding if the land was developed. The Rebaldi and Capsades areas are to be reclassified from forestry to agriculturally protected land while Villes al Vent and La Maquetona are to be rezoned as urbanised land. There are various other proposals in the documentation while the Town Hall has also been holding public meetings to discuss the plans. To see the documentation you can go to the Casa de la Cultura, the Technical Office or www.ajxabia.org

The

Postbag It was interesting to read last week´s letter about dog mess and authorities not really doing anything practical about it. I think that actually it is down to all of us to express a view when they see an irresponsible dog owner not doing any cleaning up. Last year, my pet did his business in a road gutter right in front of car that was about to pull away. With poop bag in hand, I withdrew because the car was rather close and I wanted it to drive off before I did the cleaning-up. Surprisingly, the male motorist got out and berated me loudly for not picking up the mess, but I explained to him my thought process and he calmed down. He still waited for me to get my bag out and clean up though, before he drove off.

The town plans on display.

Library on the move

THE transfer of books and other materials currently housed in Denia’s main library has started as it moves sites from the Casa de la Cultura to Calle San Jose. The facility will be closed until the 9th February when the new building is inaugurated. However, there will still be two study areas available over that

period in the Casa de la Cultura while if you have books to return over this period they can be dropped off at the buildings information desk. When the library re-opens it’s hours will be 8.30am until 9 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 1.30 on Saturdays, except for the summer months when the timetable will be altered.

Wind fans car fire by Simon Russell

THE strong winds that battered the Marina Alta last week were blamed for a car fire in Javea that quickly got out of control. Fire-fighters were called out to the blaze in the Duanes area but when they arrived the gusty conditions had spread the blaze to three other cars parked nearby. Local Police had been the first service on the scene and battled the flames with a hose from the town’s cleaning company until the professionals arrived. Thankfully no-one was hurt in the incident.

The Ibbotsons and the letter they have presented to the Town Hall in Calpe.

THE Spanish media have used the case of a British couple who have been coming to Calpe for 30 years in their motor-home as an example of how new by-laws concerning the vehicles have not been properly thought through. These ban the vehicles from parking on the town’s street overnight, something prompted by complaints from local residents. However the couple in question, the Ibbotsons, do not sleep overnight in their motor-home, choosing to park it up between journeys and stay in local accommodation, usually an apartment or hotel. While many take the view that caravanners add nothing to the local economy without even cleaning up behind themselves, the

Ibbotsons clearly do not fit this profile. They rent local accommodation, eat regularly in local restaurants and visit nearby shops and markets. However they arrived in Calpe this winter, not knowing the laws had changed and were left abusive notes on their windscreen for parking on the road. The elderly couple are now being forced to park well away from their accommodation or pay for special parking places. They have complained to the Town Hall but fear it is falling on deaf ears and their 30 year love affair with Calpe and the Costa Blanca may be coming to an end.

Do I need an STI test?

In one word, YES! Getting tested will save you a lot of worry, and it could even save your life. Most sexually transmitted infections can be cured with medication and those that can’t can be managed. thinking of starting a family?

Unfortunately, even if you have no symptoms it doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Many people carry sexually transmitted infections without knowing it as many infections have no symptoms, or very mild ones which can easily b e

NEW Kia ProCeed

The new Kia ProCeed has gone through something of a personality change. The previous Pro_Cee’d had a compact, three-door body style, placing itself as the most sporting model in the line-up. Now, however, the same name – minus some erroneous punctuation (it’s just ProCeed now) – sits on the boot lid of a shooting brake estate. The ProCeed is only available in Kia’s top three trims, which helps to separate it from the standard Ceed Sportswagon. Prices start from €24,000 for a 1.0 litre (129CV) turbo petrol. The 1.4 petrol and 1.6 diesel are both are available with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dualclutch automatic box. The flagship GT is auto only. Time will tell if buyers prefer the concept of a sporty three-door swoopy estate. The Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake-esque look certainly offers something unusual in this class. The rear LED lighting signature looks great, but there are parts of the design – like the silver trim on the C Pillar – that look a little messy. Overall, however, it’s a handsome car. The cabin was not quite so attractive. While we criticise some cars for relying almost exclusively on touchscreen interfaces that sacrifice ergonomics in the name of style, the ProCeed’s button-heavy design sits at the opposite end of the scale. Trying to get familiar with the layout goes to show that having too many switches can be just as distracting as having too few. The overall vibe is salvaged

somewhat by a lovely steering wheel that’s as attractive to look at as it is pleasant to hold. The ProCeed’s roofline is 43mm lower than the Sportswagon estate, to compensate for the loss of headroom, the rear seats are also lower. The result is roughly the same distance from seat squab to ceiling, but the drop in the occupant’s hip point will be felt by taller rear seat passengers, due to a lack

of thigh support. Boot volume is not quite a match for the estate’s 625 litres, but still far more than you’ll get from a typical hatch. The ProCeed gets a marginally firmer, lower set-up than the rest of the Ceed family, which benefits from sophisticated fullyindependent suspension all-round. The changes don’t transform the way it drives, but a twisty road reveals a little extra body

control. The ProCeed brings with it all of the other positives of the Kia Ceed, and wraps them up into a package which, at this price point, offers buyers something just a little bit different. It’s not quite at the top of its class for driving enjoyment or refinement, much makes a good substitute to the Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake.

Continuing to evolve the Suzuki customer experience has been a core focus during recent years, and the ongoing efforts have clearly paid off.” He added: “Without the support of our nationwide dealer network, and the hundreds of people that work tirelessly for the brand to deliver exceptional standards for customers week in, week out, we could not have delivered such a fantastic result. I would therefore like to congratulate everyone who has played a part in this success, and it marks a great start to 2019.”

Toyota is mulling over bringing one of its iconic nameplates back in a different form. The MR2 could come back to life, and in the guise of an electric sports car no less. Following the introduction of the new Supra, Toyota European vice president of sales and marketing Matt Harrison said the company is in the “discussion stage” with the model. However, he confirmed that the MR2 is a favoured potential addition to the product plan. Harrison also alluded to Toyota’s socalled ‘Three Brothers’,

revive

a term coined by company chief Akio Toyoda for the Supra, Celica, and MR2 trio, saying he would like to see these returning to the showrooms. The Supra is due for a launch shortly, and the GT86 is sort of today’s Celica. That leaves the third brother, the MR2 due for a rebirth. The Japanese automaker has hinted as much with the 2015 S-FR concept which takes its inspiration from the 1965 S800 sports coupe. The S-FR would lend its shape beautifully for a modernday MR2, and as

such has a chassis layout similar to the latter. An electric car has several clear advantages compared to the previous options. For one, Toyota could employ the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform for the new MR2. The compact dimensions of the electric motor enable it to be affixed behind the car’s two seats, a la the old MR2 albeit with a petrol motor instead. The battery bank could be placed below the floor, lowering the centre of gravity. The car’s relative simplicity should also result in lower overall development costs.

Drop Quotes Source: Álvaro Uribe

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

The new documentary, titled Finding Neverland, details the experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, 10, and Wade Robson, seven, who, now in their thirties, claim they were sexually abused by Michael Jackson. Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Jermaine Jackson hit back at the documentary – pointing out how Wade Robson previously defended Michael in court when the popstar was on trial in 2005, where he was acquitted. Piers asked how sure Jermaine Jackson can be Michael is

innocent considering he wasn’t there, which sparked a particularly emotional response. ‘Piers I am a thousand per cent sure because Michael was tried by a jury of his peers and he was acquitted on all of this because there was no real evidence,’ Jermaine said. ‘There was nothing there. And I will say this, our family are tired. We’re very tired. ‘Let this man rest. He did a lot for the world, let him rest. I’ll just say this, there is no truth to this documentary. Asked if he’ll be taking legal action against the documentary, Jermaine replied: ‘That’s something for the estate. And at the same time, we lost Michael, we lost our father, we’re still mourning. We lost a lot. Just leave us alone. Leave him alone. Let him rest. Please. Leaving Neverland is set to premiere on HBO and Channel 4 in the spring.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There were Nine 4th Round F.A. Cup Ties which involved Premier League teams that gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League it’s lowest scoring week so far this Season with the average score being a very modest 17 points. Overall there were 31 goals, 6 clean sheets, 20 yellow cards and no red ones. Once again most Premier League Managers made a raft of changes to their normal 1st Eleven which was the main reason for such a low scoring week. With West Ham, Everton and Spurs all paying the price there is now only 7 Premier League teams left in the Competition. John’s team Wee Aggies once again had their advantage at the top of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League slashed to only 18 points by the in form Andrew’s team Ballers. Barbra XI moved back into the top 3 after a couple of weeks away while Nick’s Black Cats moved up 4 places to 5th spot. Down at the very foot of the table, Gary’s Upside Team still

have a lot to do to get out of the hole they have dug for themselves as they are now a massive 83 points behind Kim’s Ginger United. Olly F.C. have maintained their place at the Summit of our Junior League for the last 6 weeks, currently they have a very fragile 6 point lead over former front-runner of this section Harley’s Ginger Ninjar. Blue Moon F.C. have slotted back into a top 3 position and are waiting for the door to open to allow them to challenge for the top spot. At the other end of the table, Fleetwood Gian are struggling to keep pace with the rest of the teams and are now 28 points behind Tom’s Real City. There is no change at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section where Barbra’s XI have managed to fight of the challenge from Linda’s Team Tapas who moved to within 1 point of them last week. However this week the leaders extended their advantage to a slender 4 points.

Kim’s Ginger United have returned to their rightful spot at the bottom of this section after being there for 12 weeks in the early part of the Season. Five points is the gap between them and Liz’s Cookies Crew. In our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League Bill’s East Fifers are showing no signs of surrendering the top spot even though they failed to pick up any points this week. Nick’s Black Cats closed the gap on them to 24 points. Most Managers in this League are suffering like Spurs with the absence of Harry Kane. Lloris & Gromit are in 3rd place and all top 3 teams have him in their Line-Up. Liz’s Cookies Crew are still holding everybody else up at the bottom and have they been joined by Ross’s Casper Bar who are just 5 points above them. The last 2 teams to go into our January Wine Draw are our top scoring team which was Nick’s Black Cats with a tally of 47 points and our Lowest scoring team which

was Hugo’s Spleendidmegood Utd with an unbelievable minus 8 courtesy of Spurs Trippier who scored a -5 thanks to his missed penalty against Crystal Palace. Burnley’s Tarkowski also waded in with a -3 and the rest of his team didn’t play. Manager of the Month for January has been kindly sponsored by MONA’S Restaurant in Albir who provide excellent food in very pleasant surroundings and the lucky winner this Month is Terry’s Hup Hannah City who just pipped Lee’s Athletico Higgo by 8 points. Terry & his good Lady will enjoy a super meal for 2 at this very classy Restaurant. Dave’s team The Hatters have a slight 4 point advantage over Liz’s team Cookies Crew 61 at the top of our F.A,Cup League after the 4th Round. Nick’s Blues are in 3rd place followed by Isabel’s team The Bluebells. All top 4 Managers are Manchester City Fans so we

know a good run in the F.A.Cup will give one of them a great chance of winning this Section. No changes at the top or bottom of our Champion of Champions League as Pauline’s Vodka had their control at the top cut to 24 points by Joe’s Keith Lard F.C. while at the opposite end Dave’s Hatters trail Micky’s Walkden Town Res by a formidable 60 points. There is a busy week ahead for the A.F.F.L. with 2 lots of fixtures going into the mix and also the Transfer Window closes so it’s worthwhile reminding Fantasy Managers that if one of your Players moves to another team in the Premier League it makes no difference to the points collected. If they move out of the Premier League like Chelsea’s Fabregas you are just unlucky. Don’t forget to keep track of your teams progress in the coming weeks by logging on to our super website or why not offer your opinion on our Facebook Page.

Eddie Jones reveals England team for Six Nations opener A year on from a poor 2018 Six Nations campaign, one in which England lost to Scotland, France and Wales backto-back, Eddie Jones will be looking to improve on their fifth place finish, especially considering the 2019 Rugby World Cup looms quickly on the horizon. The pressure is undeniably on, and with the injuries to big players like Dylan Hartley, Sam Underhill, Ben Te’o and Anthony Watson, the task facing Jones and the Roses is a difficult one. Also they face Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin during the first week so talk about getting thrown in at the deep-end. Related: England Six Nations Fixtures However, Jones has named a 35-man squad that can compete with anyone as shown by their Autumn performances

against South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Dan Cole has returned to the squad after his previous appearance came against Ireland in last years competition. Additionally, Mako Vunipola, Ellis Genge, Joe Launchbury, Billy Vunipola, Jack Clifford and Ollie Devoto have all returned from injury.

Jones has named four uncapped players in the squad with Ollie Thorley, Ben Earl, Dan Robson and Jack Singleton all getting call-ups. Eddie Jones said of the squad; “We are very happy with the squad and have a number of players who have come back from long-term injury. We are looking forward to getting across to Portugal and having a good ten-day preparation for the Ireland game.

England’s women buzzing for Six Nations after groundbreaking deal

There’s an air of excitement as England’s women prepare for this year’s Six Nations Championship.

That’s not only down to the team’s determination to avenge last year’s secondplace finish, but also because of the progress made off the field. Following an announcement last year, the Six Nations will be the first time England’s women play as full-time professionals -- a landmark moment for English rugby. Captain Sarah Hunter, who has over 100 caps and 11 years of international experience, knows just how much significance the decision holds. Ahead of her country’s opening game against Ireland 33-year-old Hunter she spoke to reporters explaining the energya nd significance of this years tournament. “There’s certainly a real buzz around what this is going to mean for the girls,” “Either people like myself, who have had

to have full-time jobs throughout their international careers but now know that isn’t the case, to the other side, players who are coming out of university and this is their first job, or they’re not going to university because this is the career path they want to choose -- to be a full-time rugby player.” While other countries operate on a semiprofessional basis, no other nation has put up a deal that compares with the one England has offered its 15-aside female rugby players. In total, 28 full-time contracts have been handed out, with the largest salaries thought to be worth £28,000 ($36,500). England’s results on the field, meanwhile, have also been promising, with victories over USA, Canada, and Ireland in November. The world’s No. 2 ranked side will now go for Six Nations glory after a narrow heartbreaking defeat by to France cost them the championship last year.

The fightback starts here Britain’s former world number one Andy Murray had hip resurfacing surgery in London on Monday, as he decided that there´s more to come in his career, rather than calling it quits in a few months time. The three-time Grand Slam champion, 31, announced in January he would retire this year, preferably after Wimbledon. Then he admitted the Australian Open, where he lost to Spain´s Roberto

by Alex Trelinski

Bautista Agut in the first round, could be the final tournament of his career. Murray said on Monday: “I have a metal hip. Feeling a bit battered and bruised but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain.” The Scot’s post on Instagram featured an X-ray picture of his hip. American doubles legend Bob Bryan had a similar operation in 2018,

and suggested last month that Murray ought to go for it. The 40-year-old was on court within five months of his operation and competed with twin brother Mike at the Australian Open. Professor Max Fehily, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and clinical director at the Manchester Hip Clinic said:- “90 to 95 percent of patients who have this surgery are delighted and live a pain-free life”.

nations battle A feast of Rugby Union beckons this weekend with the first round of matches in the 2019 Six Nations Championship, and perhaps an early decider in Dublin tomorrow as champions Ireland take on their closest rivals England(5.45 pm kick-off, live on ITV). It will be the final year in charge for Irish captain Rory Best, who led his side to the Grand Slam IN 2018, and a stiff opener for England´s Owen Farrell and his

by Alex Trelinski

team, who looked impressive in the Autumn Internationals, where they were unlucky not to have beaten the mighty All Blacks. The action starts tonight though in Paris, as France welcome Wales(9.00 pm kick-off, live on BBC 1) with scrum-half Tomos Williams making his Six Nations debut for Wales. Despite injury concerns there are only three changes from the

Welsh side that defeated South Africa in November. Scotland open up their account on Sunday at Murrayfield against Italy(3.30 pm kick-off, live on BBC 1), who on most occasions are the winners of the “Wooden Spoon”. Uncapped Glasgow centre Stafford McDowall, Warriors wing Rory Hughes and Edinburgh scrum-half Henry Pyrgos were all drafted into the Scots squad this week
