Baby still missing Kidnapping seems planned Editorial team THERE is still no trace of the baby girl who was kidnapped in Welkom this week, and it appears as if the kidnapper carefully planned the crime over a period of time. Promises of a good job that would enable her to take care of the eight-month-old Katleho Dineo Seobi made Mathidiso Seobi (21) an easy target. Questions the traumatised mother are struggling with include: “Is my child warm? Does she get enough to eat? Please bring her back to me, I plead with you,” says a tearful Mathidiso. According to her mother, little Katleho was watched over a period of time during the visits to the clinic in Thabong before she was stolen. Mathidiso and her mother, Shelly, say they will do anything to get the child back. The ordeal started when the kidnapper went to Shelly’s house on Monday morning and asked to see the woman (Mathidiso) whom she had met at the clinic. When Mathidiso came out of the bedroom, the woman pretended to know her. She informed Mathidiso about an employment opportunity at a garage in Stateway, Welkom. She told Mathidiso to hurry up, as they had to be at the garage before 14:00. The kidnapper also told Mathidiso to bring the baby with her so that the prospective employer could see that she was the mother of a young child and that she could only work during the day. When they reached the Total Ga-
rage, the woman told Mathidiso to go back to Thabong to fetch the clinic card. The baby stayed behind with the kidnapper. On Mathidiso’s return, the woman then wanted Mathidiso’s identity document. She again left the baby with the woman so that she could go into the shop to buy airtime to phone her mother to bring the document to her. The queue was long, and when Mathidiso went outside again, the woman and Katleho were gone. She cried out for help and the police were summoned. They arrived at the scene within minutes, but there was no sign of the woman or the baby. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, communication and liaison for the police in Welkom, says somebody saw the woman at the Goldfields Mall. Apparently she stood there until the police had left. The suspect is about 1,67 m tall, has a dark complexion, speaks South Sotho, and was wearing a black and red outfit. She was wearing a black hat, a black scarf, a black shawl and red and brown boots. Gang fighting erupts
A MASSIVE police operation was launched last week after several hours of gang fighting in Bronville claimed the life of a man and seriously injured another. The joint operation, launched by Thabong and Welkom Cluster Task Teams as well as the Tactical Response Team (TRT), clamped down on the two gangster factions, Al Qaeda and Ruff 3. They arrested 28 gang members and 18 illegal immigrants. An assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) was reported in Bronville on Tuesday last week. A man believed to be an Al Qaeda member was stabbed by Ruff 3 members. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. No one was arrested. Later that day another man (25) was stabbed to death, probably by Al Qaeda members in what is suspected to be a revenge killing. Another serious clash between Al Qaeda and Ruff 3 erupted in Bronville in the early hours of Wednesday last week. The police suspect this was a revenge attack for the killing of the gang member on Tuesday. The police operation served to contain the situation and restore order in Bronville.
About 20 Al Qaeda and 8 Ruff 3 gang members were arrested. “These arrests are not directly linked to the assault and the murder that took place in Bronville earlier on,” says WO Malebo Khosana, communications officer of Thabong Cluster. “They were charged for committing public violence and dangerous weapons were confiscated. Two illegal immigrants were also arrested in Bronville.” The operation was extended to Thabong where 16 undocumented people were arrested. Thabong Cluster Commander Maj Gen Lerato Molale lauded the members for their dedicated efforts to bring stability in the communities. “This success will allay the fear of crime from our law-abiding communities in the sense that they will have confidence in our members in turbulent times.” ) On enquiry yesterday, Khosana confirmed that there had been no further incidents since the upheaval last week. “There are no arrests effected yet on the murder and attempted murder charges. Investigation into these cases are underway. None of the arrested ‘gang’ members have been linked to these cases,” he says.

Police make huge breakthrough THE Welkom Cluster Police Stations in the region made a huge breakthrough in the past four weeks. Altogether 299 people were arrested in Welkom, Odendaalsrus, Bothaville, Allanridge and Wesselsbron. Arrests were made for crimes
such as drunkenness, possession of dangerous weapons, rape, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, dagga, assault, housebreaking and many more. Among the articles that were confiscated are 468,75 kg of dagga, knives, firearms, sheep, vehicles, groceries and liquor.
Daniel Mokone, cluster commander of Welkom, congratulated members of the police who were involved in the operation. “This is through your hard work and commitment to achieve such a huge number of arrests and seizures.
“My appreciation goes to the station commanders, detective commanders and specialised units as well as all the members who took part in these operations, for ensuring that law-abiding citizens within my cluster stations are safe and secure.”

A FACIAL reconstruction has been done of the skull of a skeleton that was found near Klippan in Welkom. During September 2012 the human skeleton was found near Klippan by a person who was fishing. The Welkom police were informed and on their arrival the deceased was found. The skeleton could be that of a middleaged man. The gumboots used in the mining environment as well as a bag was found next to the remains of the body. It is suspected that the deceased could be an illegal mine worker. Nobody came forward to claim the deceased while the body was at the Welkom Government Mortuary and thus the skull was sent to the Forensic Anthropology Research Centre to reconstruct the face of the decea sed. This was done at the Faculty of Health Sciences; Department of Anatomy at the University of Pretoria. STUDENTS who have been waiting for more than three years for their trade certificates are now receiving assistance after AfriForum Youth threatened with legal steps against the Services Seta. “A total of 52 on a list of 170 students have already been assisted. An additional 40 certificates were issued during the past two months. A second list with about 300 names is also being attended to. For the first time since 2012 complaints to the Seta actually brought about results,” said Charl Oberholzer, national chairperson of AfriForum Youth. In a meeting with the Seta a few weeks ago a dedicated person was appointed to handle the outstanding certificates. “We hope that the Services Seta will now be able to wipe out the backlog and issue the outstanding certificates. If AfriForum Youth does not receive the required feedback from the remaining students, the legal action will proceed,” Oberholzer said. The certificates enable students to study further, get promotion at work or to qualify for a salary increase. AfriForum Youth has been working with the Services SETA head office since 2012 regarding these certificates.

Taking care of two adopted children THE Department of Development and Soci al Responsibility of the Young Men’s Guild of the Methodist Church visited the Vier hoek Intermediate School, a farm school, re cently. They have “adopted” two needy children at this school. During the visit they donated school uniforms and have underta ken to support the two children in their school needs during the rest of their time at this school. Painted homes on Mandela Day THE Kganya Youth Club devoted its 67 mi nutes on Mandela Day to give back to the community. They spent their day painting the homes of the less privileged. The paint was sponsored by the SAPS Academy in Thabong and they managed to paint the outside of two houses with this paint. The youth were supervised in their endeavours by Nomsa Mopereo (yellow Tshirt). “Let us not just give back on Mandela Day, but let us give back whenever we can,” she said.

Vir die van u wat die plaaslike Meals on Wheels deur die jare ondersteun het deur skenkings, vrywillige diens, of gebede, baie, baie dankie. “U het lewens verander, verryk en gered,” sê Kuhn. Die MOWCS bedien nou Ventersburg, Hennenman, Virginia, Welkom, Riebeeckstad en Odendaalsrus. “Oor die jare heen het hierdie broodnodige diens meer uitdagend geraak. Die behoefte het gegroei, maar die skenkings het minder geword. Ook geen wonder nie; die lewe raak onbekostigbaar duur in terme van kos, brandstof en behuising. Vir dié wat ’n beroep het, raak dit amper ondraaglik. Wat nog van dié wat van ’n staatspensioen moet leef. Nadat huur en munisipale rekeninge betaal is, is daar byna geen geld meer vir kos nie. “Daarom dat hierdie diens so belangrik is en ons u om hulp vra sodat ons kan aanhou om ons bejaardes te versorg. Heelwat speelgoed is ingesamel wat saam met lede van Engen aan die kinders van die Preprimêre Skool Bronville oorhandig is. “In die toekoms sal die geleentheid op Mandela-dag (18 Julie) plaasvind om deel te wees van ons 67 minute om bydraes in die gemeenskap te lewer,” sê Philip McLaren, organiseerder van die geleentheid. Vanjaar word dié baie gewilde wedloop op 8 November aangebied en alle lede van die gemeenskap word uitgenooi om te kom deelneem. Dit word weer aangebied om soveel moontlik speelgoed vir minder bevoorregte kinders in te samel. Elke persoon wat deelneem, word dus vriendelik gevra om enige speelding na die wedloop te bring. Daar is twee verskillende afstande om van
te kies. Albei wedlope begin en eindig by die kloktoring in Stateway, Welkom. Die 5 kmpretloop begin om 18:00 en die 10 km volg om 19:00. Alle atlete wat die 10 km voltooi, sal ’n goue medalje ontvang waar voltooiers van die 5 km silwermedaljes ontvang. Die inskryfgeld vir die 10 km beloop R25 en R20 vir die 5 km. Tydelike nommers is ook beskikbaar teen R20 vir diegene wat nie oor permanente 2013-nommers beskik nie. Daar is baie pryse op die spel, onder meer ’n trofee vir die bes geklede span en ’n R500kontantprys vir die skool met die meeste inskrywings. Daar sal ook ’n geskenkpakkie aan elke voltooier oorhandig word. “Ons hoop om almal daar te sien en moenie jou speelding vergeet nie,” sê McLaren. Exhibition for artists THE Kas` Art Exhibition is a fusion of visual and performing arts culminating with exhibitions (mini-presentations). The project provides a platform for all artists to come together and showcase their products, foster stronger collaborations, express their freedom, push boundaries of contemporary arts, explore different possibilities without limitation in art creations. A journey of transforming art to relate, reflect and address the social illnesses of our communities. It also focuses on creating a dialogue between artists and the community. The Kas` Art Exhibition will conduct workshops in five provinces which are Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Free State and Eastern Cape within ten months. The workshops will focus on the principles of art practices (visual and performing arts) where artists share knowledge, research and create miniexhibitions which will form a grand fi-
nale exhibition at the Dance Space in Newtown, Johannesburg, before travelling abroad. This year the main workshops will take 3 weeks with 15 participants at each centre, starting on 5 to 24 August at the Katlehong Art Centre (Gauteng), 2 to 21 September at the Nokhwezi Community Hall in Matatiele (Eastern Cape), 14 October to 2 November at the Musicon in Bloemfontein (Free State) and 4 to 23 November at the Arekopaneng Youth Development Centre in Orange Farm (Gauteng). Venues and dates for Mpumalanga and Limpopo are to be confirmed. On 31 August all Free State artists, irrespective of their background and who are in the following disciplines: Visual Arts, Percussions, Poetry and Contemporary Dance are invited to attend the open workshop/audition at the Batho Hall (near the Batho Police Station in the Sports Location) from 09 to 16:30. Dazzle with concert THE pupils of the St Andrew’s School exceeded themselves with their biannual concert last week. The whole school, preschool to matric, took part in this Lizzie Andrews production to commemorate the school’s 50 years since 1963. Every single student participated. Each grade was given a track/ song from one of the many school musicals produced since 1969. Their interpretation of the song was entirely up to them and each grade turned out a unique and creative performance. The concert was held at the Toronto Centre, performed to three soldout performances. The parents and friends of the school enjoyed watching the shows – Barnyard Theatre style – and afterwards were encoura ged to vote by bidding cash for the best grade. Over R130 000 was raised and the money will be used for a specific project.

WELKOM body builder Frans Hloi (30) is going to give it his all at the national championships in Port Elizabeth. He is participating in the u.65 kg division. The championships is taking place from 4 to 7 September. Frans did South Africa proud when he took part in the world championships in Austria in 2011. He came fourth in his division. This dedicated young man is not permanently employed. To be able to attend the national championships in the Eastern Cape, Frans needs about R7 500: R500 for track suits, R300 for a tog bag, R3 000 for accommodation and R3 500 for transport. Get ready for the Happy Feet Race IT is ready, steady, go for the annual Happy Active Feet Women’s Race on 23 August. Participants need not worry about becoming dehydrated. There will be ample water points, says Hilde du Plessis, one of the organisers of the race. Newly-designed medals await runners and walkers this year. The first 1 000 entrants for the 5 km and 10 km events will receive a string bag. Entries can be done at the MediClinic Welkom, while pre-entries will be excepted at the Welkom Square next to Panarotti’s on Wednesday, 21 August, and Thursday, 22 August, from 14:30 to 17:00. Entries can also be done on the day of the race between 08:00 up to 20
minutes before the start of the different races. The wheelchair race for disabled people starts at 16:00. There is no entry fee for the race. The next race for children in the age group 6 to 14 years over 1 km starts at 16:30. The entry fee is R10. The toddlers (three to five years) 100 m dash walk/run starts at 17:00. The entry fee is R10. This is followed by the Free State 5 km women’s fun walk/run at 18:00. The entry fee is R20. The highlight will be the 10 km men’s and women’s race at 18:45.
