Matjhabeng will be the pilot project for the launch of the special presidential package to revitalise old mining towns in improving the lives of those communities. The executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, took representatives of the Office of the Presidency and the Office of the Premier on a tour of Matjhabeng on Thursday (11/10). The aim was to show them the state of the municipality and the conditions in which the residents of Matjhabeng have to live. After visiting various sites, comparisons were made to show how Matjhabeng has changed since the mines were last operational. “The special presidential package seeks to revive the economy of mining towns by creating jobs,” says Aphalele Mbizo, personal aid to the mayor. “Former President Jacob Zuma announced the project during his State of the Nation address in 2016. The

Skool as nasionale wenner gekroon Die Laerskool Hennenman is tydens ’n spoggeleentheid op Dinsdag 9 Oktober as die nasionale wenners van die Suid-Afrikaanse agentskap vir die bevordering van wetenskap en tegnologie (Saatsa) se jaarlikse AstroQuiz vasvra-kompetisie aangewys. Helen van Eeden, ’n wiskundeen wetenskaponderwyser by dié skool, rig al sedert 2008 elke jaar die skool se span af. Sy en die vier slimkoppe van die span, Theuns Delport, Katleho Motingoe, Lynné van Wyk en Veronique du Plooy, het elk ’n skootrekenaar en mobiele

teleskoop vir hul uitnemende prestasie ontvang. Die Italiaanse ambassade wat jaarliks by die kompetisie betrokke is, het ook gereël dat die kinders met die ruimtevaarder, Luca Parmitano, deur middel van ’n Skype-oproep gesels. Parmitano was in Rome ten tye van die oproep. Van Eeden se spanne blink altyd uit en was drie keer die provinsiale wenners. “Net ’n punt of twee skei die wenners en naaswenners gewoonlik van mekaar,” sê sy. Die skool het twee keer vierde in die nasionale kompetisie

geëindig, maar dit is die eerste keer dat hulle as die algehele wenners aangewys word. Die eindronde van die kompetisie was Maandagaand 8 Oktober in Pretoria. In die laaste tien jaar is dit die derde keer dat ’n Vrystaatse skool die nasionale kompetisie wen. Die Eunice High School van Bloemfontein het in 2009 gewen en die Laerskool Unicom van Tweespruit in 2013. Die Laerskool Hennenman het net 350 leerlinge en was van die kleiner skole wat aan die kompetisie deelgeneem het, sê Van Eeden.

Dit is die eerste keer dat die Laerskool Hennenman die algehele wenners van die jaarlikse Suid-Afrikaanse agentskap vir die bevordering van wetenskap en tegnologie (Saatsa) se kompetisie is. This milestone will be celebrated with a day-night market. “We will celebrate 30 years of service to the terminally-ill and our community with a day filled with special and momentous occasions,” says Marli Young, general manager of the Goldfields Hospice Association. People can visit the variety market, which will be held on the grounds of Rose House at 58 Montague Street, Bedelia, from 09:00 to 21:00. Bereaved families can buy a balloon and pledge a lost loved one’s name in the book of memories. A photo booth and kiddies’ corner will keep the little ones entertained, and food and drinks will be on sale. Prizes are up for grabs with a raffle and lucky draws. Die Goudveld-Hoërskool het vanjaar ’n uitstekende netbalseisoen beleef. Ten tyde van die Lejweleputswaproewe is 26 spelers van dié skool in spanne ingesluit. Tien van die spelers is ook later vir Vrystaat-spanne gekies. Drie spelers van dié skool het in die Julie-vakansie aan die Thepa Tradingnetbaltoernooi in Hennenman deelgeneem. In die Fast Five-netbaltoernooi wat op Saterdag 15 September in Bothaville aangebied is, het die Gouties die res van die deelnemende netbalspanne in die stof laat byt. Al Goudveld se junior en senior spanne was onoorwonne. Die spanne het gekwalifiseer om aan die Nasionale Fast Five-netbaltoernooi, wat op 1 en 2 Oktober in Johannesburg aangebied is, deel te neem. Daar het die seniors ’n algehele

vierde plek behaal en die juniors was algeheel in die vyfde plek. Die spanne is deur Nadia Olivier (junior), Madri Harmse en Roxy Siebert afgerig. Op die Vrystaatbeker-netbaltoernooi het die skool ook sy stempel afgedruk. Die o.15A- en o.17A-span het ’n tweede plek in die Vrystaat behaal en die o.16A- en eerste span het ’n plek in die topvier van die Vrystaat behaal. Die o.17A-span wat deur Madri Harmse afgerig word, het na die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskapsbyeenkoms wat in Julie in Boksburg plaasgevind het, deurgedring en 13de in die land geëindig. Die o.15A-span, wat deur Nadia Olivier en Elba Stolk afgerig word, het na die Motsepe- Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskapsbyeenkoms deurgedring wat in Augustus in Vereeniging aangebied is. Die span het daar die algehele vyfde plek behaal.

Die Goudveld-Hoërskool se eerste netbalspan het vanjaar op die baan geskitter. Die o.15A- en o.17A-span het dié seisoen die beste van al die Goutienetbalspanne gevaar. “Die voorbereiding en oefening vir vanjaar se sukses het reeds vroeg in Maart begin,” sê Nadia Olivier, netbalhoof van Goudveld. “Anso Kemp en Erin Burger het vir

ons skool ’n netbaloefenkamp aangebied.” Die eerste span het ook na Camp Discovery getoer. Daar het Jenny van Dyk van die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP), Tukkies se netbalafrigter, die spelers nuwe tegnieke en vaardighede geleer.
