Cas Badenhorst (71), een van die mees bekende aptekers van Welkom, is Maandag (08/10) in Bloemfontein oorlede. Badenhorst, van die Bedelia-apteek, was vir die afgelope sewe weke baie siek en het sy moedige stryd in die Mediclinic Bloemfontein verloor. Hy het ’n inwendige wond gehad wat nie wou gesond word nie. Medelye het van oraloor ingestroom en sy kliënte het op Facebook sy lof besing. Hy is as ’n hardwerkende man en uitstekende apteker beskryf. Badenhorst het ’n ongelooflike kennis oor talle onderwerpe gehad en kon met baie wysheid raad aan sy kliënte bied. Sy kennis van medisyne, siektes en selfs dierekwale was alombekend, en hy het nooit geskroom om iemand wat vir raad aanklop te help nie. Badenhorst is in Middelburg in Mpumalanga gebore en het daar sy laerskoolloopbaan voltooi. Sy hoërskoolloopbaan het hy aan Grey-kollege in Bloemfontein voltooi.

Hy het daarna aptekerswese aan die destydse Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys (nou die Noord-
Wes-Universiteit) studeer. Badenhorst het in 1971 sy apteek in Bedelia begin, waar hy dit die afgelope 47 jaar bedryf het
Hy het ’n geweldige liefde vir die land se geskiedenis en oorsprong gehad. Daarby was hy geseënd met ’n wye algemene kennis en kon oor enige onderwerp gesels. Badenhorst was gaande daaroor om op sy plaas buite Welkom te wees en was ook ’n natuurmens. Hy en sy seuns het een maal per jaar by die mees eksotiese visvangplekke in Afrika gaan visvang. Boonop het Badenhorst melk van sy eie melkery in ’n winkeltjie in dieselfde kompleks waar sy apteek is, verkoop. Hoewel nie een van sy kinders aptekers geword het nie, het sy een dogter, Nicola, saam met hom in die apteek gewerk. “Dit was Cas se wens dat ons as familie so normaal moontlik ná sy afsterwe moet voortgaan en voluit moet lewe soos hy dit gedoen het,” sê sy vrou, Catherine. Badenhorst se roudiens word Maandag (15/10) om 11:00 in die NG kerk Bedelia in Welkom gehou. Hy word deur Catherine, sy seuns, John en Brian, en sy dogters, Tracy, Nicola, Karen en Lyndall, asook tien kleinkinders oorleef.

The future of mining in the Free State Goldfields, and the future of the motor industry in South Africa, will be discussed at a power business breakfast held at the Voluit Primary School in Virginia on 26 October. “It is a fund-raiser for the community, but it is envisaged to give institutions a much-needed forum to interact with small business and the community,” says Joseph Taylor, organiser of the event. The guest speakers are William Taylor (senior vice-president of Sibanye Gold and Uranium Division), Stoffies Odendaal (general manager of the Beatrix Gold Mine), Robert Hart (executive engineer South Africa Assets of Harmony Gold), Francois Jansen van Rensburg (regional manager of Harmony Gold Free State operations) and Dr Casper Kruger (former vice president of Dealer Network at Toyota, former managing director of Ford Company Sub Sahara and Africa, and currently the managing director of Motor Division of the Halfway Group). “As a community the Welkom Goldfields have always been able to adapt and change, meeting the various challenges expected. It is an opportunity to spread the ideas and thinking of the influential industries in the area. “Most people are closely, if not directly, associated with the mining and motor industry in the Goldfields and would like to make use of this opportunity to get your view on the future,” says Taylor. The breakfast is scheduled to start at 09:00 and should conclude by 12:00. Tables will be sold at a cost of R1 800 per table of eight people (including a light breakfast). Only 30 tables can be accommodated and individuals may buy tickets at R200 each. Bookings must be done beforehand. The closing date for bookings is Friday, 19 October. Die geliefde steunpilaar van die Riebeeckstad-kleuterskool, Cathy Thomas (tannie Katy), is Saterdag (06/10) in die Life-Rosepark-hospitaal in Bloemfontein oorlede. Thomas (66) is skaars twee weke gelede met kanker gediagnoseer waarna haar gesondheid vinnig agteruit gegaan het. Sy het op Maandag 24 September uitgevind dat sy
kanker het. “My ma was vir twee dae in die algemene saal opgeneem, waarna sy na die hoësorgeenheid oorgeplaas is. Daar het haar toestand vinnig versleg,” sê haar dogter, Minette du Preez. Thomas was ’n mooi vrou met ’n sagte geaardheid wat baie gelief by die kinders en ouers van dié kleuterskool was. Sy het vir bykans 20 jaar as sekretaresse by die kleuterskool gewerk. Thomas is op 15 Maart 1952 in Odendaalsrus
gebore waar sy ook grootgeword het. Dié gesoute Goudvelder het haar man Don Thomas in Welkom ontmoet. Die egpaar sou in Oktober hul 47ste huweliksherdenking gevier het. Uit die huwelik is twee dogters, Minnette en Carien, gebore. “Buiten haar liefde vir haar werk by die kleuterskool – wat sy met soveel liefde en deernis aangepak het – was sy baie lief vir die natuur. “My ouers was gaande daaroor om die wildtuin te
besoek en my ma het nêrens sonder haar verkyker en voëlboek gegaan nie. Sy was ’n uitstekende tuinier wat altyd ’n spogtuin gehad het,” sê Minette. Haar roudiens het gistermiddag (10/10) vanuit die NG kerk Moedergemeente in Riebeeckstad plaasgevind. Sy word deur haar man, Don, dogter Minette en haar man, Jacques du Preez, en dogter Carien en haar man, Rudi Jones, asook deur twee kleinkinders, Nathan en Reese, oorleef.

Om twee veteraanmotors van byna niks af op te bou en in stand te hou, was sy stokperdjie vir die afgelope 40 jaar; ’n taak wat voortduur. Dié spesiale motors – ’n Borgward Isabella en ’n Auto Union 1000S, beter bekend as die DKW – word gekoester en met baie liefde in stand

gehou. Die Borgward Isabella het hy in 1979 gekoop. Dié motors het hul eerste verskyning in die laat 1930’s gemaak. Buks het die Borgward uitmekaar gehaal en van nuuts af opgebou. Die herstel- en bouwerk het hom vier jaar geneem. In 2002, toe Buks afgetree het, het hy die DKW (’n model uit die vroeë 60’s) in Rosendal gaan koop. “Onderdele vir albei die motors is baie skaars, en ek verkies om self alle herstelwerk aan my motors te doen. “Dit is ook belangrik dat daar altyd ’n mens se asem in die motors bly, anders vergaan dit. Ek ry elke naweek met albei motors om hulle aan die gang te hou,” sê Buks. Hy het ’n uitgebreide kennis oor
motors, waarna ’n mens ure lank kan luister. Buks se hond Sasha deel sy liefde en passie vir die ou motors. As daar gery word, is Sasha eerste in, en blykbaar verkies sy om net in die twee veteraanmotors te ry. Buks is sedert 2002 ’n lid van die Welkom Old Auto Club. Elke maand het dié klub ’n uitstappie of ’n saamtrek waar liefhebbers van veteraanmotors saamkuier. Die jaarlikse Welkom Cars in the Park-geleentheid, wat in Oktober plaasvind, is die klub se grootste saamtrek en hiertydens kom veteraanmotorklubs van oor Suid-Afrika heen byeen. Buks het Saterdag (06/10) sy DKW ten tyde van dié geleentheid ten toon gestel.

Op die jaarlikse Cars in the Park-skou, wat Saterdag (06/10) gehou is, is ongeveer 600 veteraanmotors uitgestal, met bykans 4 000 besoekers en uitstallers wat van heinde en ver gekom het. Uitstallers van oor Suid-Afrika heen kon spog met hul pragstukke wat deur besoekers bewonder en waardeer is. “Die skou bestaan hoofsaaklik uit veteraanmotors wat deur die eienaar uitgestal word, en die skou groei jaarliks. Vanjaar het ons met ’n rekordgetal besoekers gespog,” sê Craig
Evans, voorsitter van die Welkom Old Auto Club. Altesaam 20 veteraanmotorklubs van oor Suid-Afrika heen het dit bygewoon. “Dit was vir ons ’n reusevoorreg om die Datsun SSS Klub R.S.A. op ons skou te hê, as deel van die klub se nasionale Datsun-vieringe,” sê hy. ’n Gedeelte van die dag se opbrengs word jaarliks aan liefdadigheid geskenk. Vanjaar se geld sal vir ’n Kersfeespartytjie vir minder bevoorregte kinders aangewend word. Die Welkom Old Auto Club nooi lede van die publiek wat ’n veteraanmotor besit en wat ouer as 20 jaar is, om hulle by
die klub aan te sluit. Die klub hou maandeliks ’n geselligheid waar almal saamkuier en ook ritte met die pronkstukke onderneem. Dit is ’n geleentheid vir die hele familie. “Dit verg harde werk en lang ure van bloedsweet, en ook absolute passie vir die klub en die motors, om die skou suksesvol te maak. Ons is dankbaar vir elke borg en individu wat hul tyd opoffer om te help met die voorbereiding om van die skou ’n sukses te maak,” sê Evans. ’n Egpaar van Riebeeckstad het ’n rekord opgestel toe hulle gesamentlik ’n merkwaardige aantal eenhede bloed geskenk het. Gert Nel (66) en sy vrou, Hester (67), kon deur 530 eenhede te skenk, 1 590 mense se lewe red. Die egpaar is Vrydag (05/10) deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBD) vereer vir hul lewenslange en getroue bydrae. Gert het die Karl Landsteiner- goue medalje vir 300 eenhede en Hester die Paul Ehrlich-medalje vir 225 eenhede ontvang.
Sy het egter reeds 230 eenhede geskenk, en was ook die eerste vrou in die Goudveld se geskiedenis wat 200 eenhede geskenk het. Gert het in 1970 op die ouderdom 18 jaar begin bloed skenk en Hester in 1967 toe sy 16 jaar oud was. Hulle het mekaar in 1972 ontmoet en is in 1974 getroud. Dit is hul passie om ’n verskil in ander se lewe te maak en om bloed te skenk het dié passie vervul. Die egpaar is 44 jaar getroud en het drie kinders. Hulle twee seuns is ook ywerige bloedskenkers. Hul oudste seun, Gerrie (45), het al 90 eenhede geskenk en die jongste seun, Mauritz (37), 52 eenhede.
Die Nel-egpaar van Riebeeckstad is Vrydag (05/10) op ’n spoggeleentheid by Diggers Inn Welkom deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBD) vereer vir hul bydrae. Die twee het gesamentlik 530 eenhede bloed geskenk, waarmee hulle 1 590 mense kon help. Daar was vanjaar gereeld modderbesmeerde lyfies te sien op die laerskoolkampe vir Vrystaatse Voortrekkers, wat van 29 September tot 3 Oktober op Doornkloof aangebied is. Die boeresport-kompetisies, wat die afgelope paar jaar weens die droogte aangepas moes word, het vanjaar die eerste keer in ’n lang tyd weer waterspeletjies ingesluit wat tot groot modderpret gelei het. Doornkloof, die Voortrekkerplaas naby Lindley, vier volgende jaar sy 80ste jaar in besit van dié beweging en groot feesvieringe word beplan. Willie Engelbrecht, gebiedsleier van die Vrystaatse Voortrekkers, sê daar was vanjaar 610 kinders op die vyf kampe wat aangebied is – die meeste sedert 2013. Benewens die kampe vir gr. 4 (Doornkamp), gr. 5 (Klitsgraskamp), gr. 6 (Murgpypkamp) en gr. 7 (Avontuurkamp), is die tweede Selfbehoudkamp vir gr. 10 tot gr. 12-leerlinge ook van 29 September tot 6 Oktober op dié plaas aangebied. Die kinders op die selfbehoudkamp leer hoe om in veld te oorleef. Engelbrecht sê die ledetal van Die Voortrekkers in die Vrystaat het die afgelope jaar met 9% gegroei en twee nuwe kommando’s is in Clocolan en in Bultfontein gestig. Daar word gewerk aan die stigting van nog twee kommando’s, in Odendaalsrus en Winburg. ’n Aanwins vir Doornkloof
is die nuwe plaasbestuurder, Chris Giliomee, en sy vrou, Jackie. Verbeterings word voortdurend op die plaas gedoen en benewens die talle Voortrekkerkampe wat hier aangebied word, bied Die Voortrekkers deesdae leierskapskampe aan. Die plaas word toenemend gebruik vir algemene kampe en ’n hele paar troues is al hier aangebied. Engelbrecht sê daar is deesdae slaapplek vir 1 000 mense op die verskillende terreine op die plaas. Corlia Botha, kampleier van die Avontuurkamp wat pas haar 90ste Voortrekkerkamp op Doornkloof voltooi het, sê dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe die kinders die natuur op die wildplaas beleef en geniet. Die gr. 7-leerlinge wat die kamp bywoon, slaap in skuilings wat hulle self gebou het in die veld. Hanko Botha van die Laerskool Universitas in Bloemfontein sê hy het Operasie Suiderkruis op die Avontuurkamp en die lesing oor jagtoerusting geniet. As part of the Welkom SPCA’s annual fundraising, they presented the Mr and Ms Paw Print beauty pageant for the second year. This fun event was hosted at the Goudveld-Hoërskool on Saturday (06/10). The pageant was the initiative of Maureen Nel, chairperson of the Welkom SPCA. “The aim of the pageant is to raise awareness throughout the community to get involved,” says Nel. Participants competed with a lot of enthusiasm. Nel said the participants had to make one outfit from waste material and there was no lack in creativity. The participants came up with very interesting outfits. Participants were judged in two categories, casual and trashion, and in seven categories in the pageant: ) 0 to 6 years: Miss Puppy Love Pre-School; ) 7 to 12 years: Miss Puppy Love; ) 13 to 17 years: Miss Teen Queen; ) 18 to 25 years: Ms Foxy Lady; ) 26 to 39 years: Ms Tiger Tail; ) 40 years plus: Ms Leading Lion; and ) Mr and Ms Paw Print. Dance talent reaches fame in championship On Saturday (06/10) the Diversity Dance Studio from Odendaalsrus competed at the Talent Africa Regionals Competition at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom. The entire team of the Diversity Dance Studio qualified to represent the Free State at the Talent Africa National Championship held during March 2019. There they will compete for a place in the South African team to represent South Africa in New York. They also won the award for the best dance studio. Die Griffons was die afgelope drie naweke onoorwonne en het Vrydag (05/10) teen Grens in Oos-Londen te staan gekom. Die Perstruie het met ’n goeie aanslag ’n briljante vertoning gelewer en kon met ’n eindtelling van 40 – 7 op die telbord spog. Dié oorwinning het verseker dat die Griffons deurdring na die eerste-liga se halfeindstryd, hulle beklee tans die vierde plek op die punteleer. Grens het op hul tuisveld in die stof gebyt, met die Perstruie wat van die begin van die wedstryd af op die aanval was. Die Griffons kon daarin slaag om sewe drieë te druk en die haker Anrich Alberts het ’n uitstekende driekuns aangeteken. Die ander vier drieë is deur Nkululeko Marwana, Duan
Pretorius, Jean Pretorius en Thato Mavundla gedruk. Die sewe doelskoppe is deur Duan Pretorius uitgevoer, waarvan een suksesvol was. Puntemakers vir Grens was Billy Dutton wat die enigste drie aangeteken het en Aphiwe Stemele wat ’n doelskop deur die pale kon sit. Saterdag (13/10) sal die Perstruie teen die Suidwestelike Distrikte (SWD) se Arende in George in die halfeindstryd te staan kom. ) Vandag (11/10) vind die Griffons se jaarlikse gholfdag op die Oppenheimer-gholfbaan in Welkom plaas. “Almal word uitgenooi om dié geleentheid ten bate van die Griffons-rugbyunie te ondersteun. Dit beloof om ’n heerlike geleentheid te wees,” sê Pieter Theunissen, bemarker van die Griffons.
