Cas Badenhorst (71), een van die mees bekende aptekers van Welkom, is Maandag (08/10) in Bloemfontein oorlede. Badenhorst, van die Bedelia-apteek, was vir die afgelope sewe weke baie siek en het sy moedige stryd in die Mediclinic Bloemfontein verloor. Hy het ’n inwendige wond gehad wat nie wou gesond word nie. Medelye het van oraloor ingestroom en sy kliënte het op Facebook sy lof besing. Hy is as ’n hardwerkende man en uitstekende apteker beskryf. Badenhorst het ’n ongelooflike kennis oor talle onderwerpe gehad en kon met baie wysheid raad aan sy kliënte bied. Sy kennis van medisyne, siektes en selfs dierekwale was alombekend, en hy het nooit geskroom om iemand wat vir raad aanklop te help nie. Badenhorst is in Middelburg in Mpumalanga gebore en het daar sy laerskoolloopbaan voltooi. Sy hoërskoolloopbaan het hy aan Grey-kollege in Bloemfontein voltooi.

Hy het daarna aptekerswese aan die destydse Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys (nou die Noord-
Wes-Universiteit) studeer. Badenhorst het in 1971 sy apteek in Bedelia begin, waar hy dit die afgelope 47 jaar bedryf het
Hy het ’n geweldige liefde vir die land se geskiedenis en oorsprong gehad. Daarby was hy geseënd met ’n wye algemene kennis en kon oor enige onderwerp gesels. Badenhorst was gaande daaroor om op sy plaas buite Welkom te wees en was ook ’n natuurmens. Hy en sy seuns het een maal per jaar by die mees eksotiese visvangplekke in Afrika gaan visvang. Boonop het Badenhorst melk van sy eie melkery in ’n winkeltjie in dieselfde kompleks waar sy apteek is, verkoop. Hoewel nie een van sy kinders aptekers geword het nie, het sy een dogter, Nicola, saam met hom in die apteek gewerk. “Dit was Cas se wens dat ons as familie so normaal moontlik ná sy afsterwe moet voortgaan en voluit moet lewe soos hy dit gedoen het,” sê sy vrou, Catherine. Badenhorst se roudiens word Maandag (15/10) om 11:00 in die NG kerk Bedelia in Welkom gehou. Hy word deur Catherine, sy seuns, John en Brian, en sy dogters, Tracy, Nicola, Karen en Lyndall, asook tien kleinkinders oorleef.

The future of mining in the Free State Goldfields, and the future of the motor industry in South Africa, will be discussed at a power business breakfast held at the Voluit Primary School in Virginia on 26 October. “It is a fund-raiser for the community, but it is envisaged to give institutions a much-needed forum to interact with small business and the community,” says Joseph Taylor, organiser of the event. The guest speakers are William Taylor (senior vice-president of Sibanye Gold and Uranium Division), Stoffies Odendaal (general manager of the Beatrix Gold Mine), Robert Hart (executive engineer South Africa Assets of Harmony Gold), Francois Jansen van Rensburg (regional manager of Harmony Gold Free State operations) and Dr Casper Kruger (former vice president of Dealer Network at Toyota, former managing director of Ford Company Sub Sahara and Africa, and currently the managing director of Motor Division of the Halfway Group). “As a community the Welkom Goldfields have always been able to adapt and change, meeting the various challenges expected. It is an opportunity to spread the ideas and thinking of the influential industries in the area. “Most people are closely, if not directly, associated with the mining and motor industry in the Goldfields and would like to make use of this opportunity to get your view on the future,” says Taylor. The breakfast is scheduled to start at 09:00 and should conclude by 12:00. Tables will be sold at a cost of R1 800 per table of eight people (including a light breakfast). Only 30 tables can be accommodated and individuals may buy tickets at R200 each. Bookings must be done beforehand. The closing date for bookings is Friday, 19 October.
