Leaves two injured Two men were injured on Monday (10/09) morning when the truck they were travelling in was hit by a train while the truck was crossing the tracks near the President Brand Mine outside Welkom. “ER24 paramedics, along with other services, found the wrecked truck upside down on the tracks in front of the train,” says Russel Meiring of ER24. “Paramedics found two men trapped inside the truck. They had sustained moderate injuries, and were treated on the scene before being transported to hospitals by other emergency services.” Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Welkom Police Cluster, confirms the accident. “A case of reckless driving is being investigated,” says Thakeng. Photo: ER24

Nicho Barnard, a born and bred Welkomite, has stretched his wings beyond the borders of South Africa and is making a difference internationally in his work and with the people he meets. This young go-getter is only 23 years old. He is the director and founder of his own international college, The South African Film, Acting and Theatre Academy (Safata), which offers internaSupplied tionally accredited and recognised tertiary

education in the performing arts, acting, theatre and filmmaking. Nicho is the director of his own film production and media broadcasting company, NJ Entertainment and Associates and Nightlight Productions. This year he was appointed as director for another film production company, Windmill Productions. He is also the executive producer and showrunner for a new up-and-coming International TV series, Dreams. This is the second international show on which Nicho was appointed as showrunner. This makes him the youngest showrunner in television history. Apart from having his own company and being the director of two other major companies, making his own film, working as

a full-time actor, director and producer on other films and now, international Netflix and Amazon Series, Nicho pushes the boundaries even more. In August 2018, Nicho was elected as an official youth diplomat for South Africa. He attended the United Nations Youth Conference in Bangkok with guest speakers such as Barack Obama, Samuel L Jackson and Julia Clinton. To add to his long list of accomplishments, Nicho has been chosen as the official main judge of the Talent Africa National Competition in South Africa. He will be touring throughout South Africa for the regional round auditions. He will then be the judge and official scout at the nationals in 2019.

One of the cities Nicho will be visiting for audition rounds with Talent Africa is Welkom. The Free State regional rounds will be held on 6 October at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre. Nicho has always made a mark wherever he goes. From appearing in musicals hosted by the Goudveld-Hoërskool in 2011, and then hosting and directing his own musical, FAME, at the age of 16, Nicho has proven that he has ambition and passion. “If people say no, I don’t get mad. I simply think to myself that they just don’t understand and it’s my job to educate them. For every yes you get, you will get a thousand no’s. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. The key to success is determination,” says Nicho.
