Money still unaccounted for DA to take the matter of forsaken housing project to parliament It is still not clear what has happened to the G Hostel’s R222 million.

According to the Free State leader of the DA, Patricia Kopane, R11 billion was allocated to the Free State Department of Human Settlements for housing.

More than R1 billion was paid to contracters, but very few houses were ever built in the province.

Kopane says 66 000 title deeds for RDP houses in the Free State are yet to be given to beneficiaries.

“The provincial Department of Human Settlements has incomplete audits and is rife with corruption.”

Kopane, along with a delegation of DA leaders, visited the beleaguered site on Monday (23/04).

On 12 April, Vista reported that the contract had been awarded to the

Mafuri Turnkey construction company in 2016. It was terminated due to nonperformance of the contractor. The DA will take the matter to parliament.

According to Senne Bogatsu, spokesperson of the Department of Human Settlements, the project is still funded and will be recommenced in the 2018-’19 financial year.

“People who qualify for government subsidised housing will be housed,” she says.

“In 2014, some 700 people were moved from here to a non-serviced area next to the Tisha Vanga Bridge,” says Michael Letutu, spokesperson for the Ward 31 Small Business Forum.

“They are still there, although some have found other informal settlements to live in.”

The project entails 46 three- and four-storey buildings, including electricity and plumbing.

The police in Zamdela are looking for Jeremiah Dineka who stays in Amelia in the Sasolburg area.

Dineka allegedly disappeared on Wednesday, 17 January, at about 18:35. Dineka’s son received a phone call from his father’s neighbour saying they have not seen his father for a while.

On Tuesday, 23 January, he visited his father’s house and he did not find him, but managed to get into the

house which was found dusty, indicating that his father had not been there for a while.

The matter was reported to the police and a missing person docket was registered.

Residents up in arms in Bothaville Residents from Bothaville, upset about the service delivery of the Nala Municipality, started with protest actions on Sunday (22/04) at about 11:00.

Residents blocked the streets in Kgotsong with burning tyres, stones and trash.

On Monday (23/04), residents continued to burn tyres and burnt a trailer belonging to the Nala Municipality.

Six shops of foreign nationals were also looted and the shops were burnt

and damaged.

Members of the Public Order Policing managed to arrest ten males and they were charged with public violence and malicious damage to property.

The ten suspects, aged 16 to 35 years old, appeared in the Bothaville Magistrate Court on Tuesday (24/04).

The situation in town is tense, but police members of the Crowd Management Unit are monitoring the situation and trying to maintain stability and order in Kgotsong.

Members of the Thabong Crime Intelligence and Welkom K9 Unit received a tip-off that two men were about to commit a burglary near Bultfontein.

Based on this information, the police then launched an observation on a farm road near the Welkom-Bultfontein-road on 16 April.

Two men were identified and then

arrested. However, they had already pawned the stolen items.

Two television sets were recovered by the Thabong Crime Intelligence Unit.

The men are facing charges of possession of stolen items and burglary.

The two men are 43 and 55 years old.

“Dit is absoluut genade van Bo, en ’n wonderwerk, dat die drie kinders so goed ná die ongeluk herstel het,” sê Mariska van Zyl, ma van Janika, een van vyf jong mense wat in Februarie in ’n grusame motorongeluk op die Virginia-Welkom-pad betrokke was.

Janika (18), ’n eerstejaar-onderwysstudent, was bykans 21 dae in die hoësorgeenheid van die Mediclinic Welkom en was ná die ongeluk aan haar linkerkant verlam. Sy is later na die Wilmedpark-hospitaal in Klerksdorp oorgeplaas.

“Janika het daar baie vinnig herstel en wonderbaarlik goed aangesterk. Sy kon op dag 37 ná die ongeluk weer praat,” sê Mariska.

Ná 12 dae in die Wilmedpark-hospitaal het sy so goed aangesterk dat sy na die Pasteur-rehabilitasiesentrum in Bloemfontein oorgeplaas is.

“Janika se positiewe gesindheid en haar wil om te herstel, asook almal se gebede en haar geloof, het haar deur die tyd gedra.”

Sy kan al bykans 70 m ver loop en die dokters beskou dit opsigself as ’n wonderwerk. Nadat sy botoks-inspuitings in haar linkerhand gekry het, het sy 95% van die hand se gebruik herwin.

Bluf werk nie meer nie Johan de Lange, Naudeville: Ek lees in Vista van 19 April dat Thabiso Tsoaeli vir almal wil vertel dat die sogenaamde draaipunt bereik is.

Wat ’n absolute belaglikheid.

Dit is duidelik dat Tsoaeli geen benul het van wat in die stad aangaan nie. Hy sal ook nooit nie, want om regtig uit te vind wat aangaan, sal dalk moeite van sy kant af verg.

Hy sal dalk dan vir sy magtige salaris ’n bietjie meer werk moet doen.

Soos byvoorbeeld om kyk wat so ’n bietjie verder as die omheinde burgersentrum gebeur.

In dieselfde uitgawe van Vista word beskryf hoe die broodwinner van ’n hele gesin ernstig beseer is toe hy in ’n gat in Donaldbainstraat geval het weens vrotsige nalatigheid.

Tsoaeli was by die vergadering toe ek persoonlik die lys van probleme in my onmiddellike omgewing aan die burgemeester gegee het.

Ja, meneer. U het wel ’n draaipunt bereik. Die punt waar alles om u in duie stort.

U het hierdie draaipunt jare gelede al bereik. En u weet nie eers daarvan nie. Die wykgebaseerde diensleweringsprogram is net ’n foefie wat deur iemand uitgedink is om mense te probeer paai.

U praat van waterlekke. Toe u ingenieursdepartement die waterlek reg voor Dave Fredericksstraat 22 moes herstel, is daar natuurlik net so ’n gemors daarvan gemaak. Die water lek nou sommer baie beter. Ek glo die stormwaterdrein is teen dié tyd al mooi skoongespoel danksy die swak werk.

Dit is natuurlik heeltemal nutteloos om enige openbare sitting van die niemandsraad by te woon. Daar word in elk geval niks aan enige klagte gedoen nie. As ’n niemandsraad nie eers kan bekostig om een enkele gloeilamp te vervang nie, wat sou die nut wees om so ’n vergadering by te woon?

Ja, meneer, u het inderdaad ’n slegte draaipunt bereik.

Hou dus maar op om die inwoners van Matjhabeng te probeer bluf. Dit werk eenvoudig nie meer nie.

Public invited to meetings The Lejweleputswa District Municipality hosted a district forum meeting on the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) on 18 April.

The meeting was attended by all the mayors in the district, representatives of mining companies and the Chamber of Business, councillors and members of the community.

The IDP is a five-year plan which local government is required to compile to determine the municipality’s development needs. The projects within the IDP is linked to the municipality’s budget.

The municipality encourages citizens to participate in IDP meetings to ensure that their specific needs are made known. Citizens can also communicate via their ward committees and ward councillors.

The Lejweleputswa IDP Representative Forum was organised in terms of Section 15 of the Local Government: Municipal Planning and Performance Regulations.

“By broadening the scope of the

IDP Representative Forum to include the budget, performance management and service agreement requirements for public participation, the municipality asserts that budgeting ought to be linked to development planning. This clearly affects the definition of performance areas, indicators and targets, as well as service delivery,” says Khaya Mqeke, communications manager for the Lejweleputswa District Municipality.

“The municipality understands the importance of keeping pace with changing environments, and employs a number of diverse instruments to stay abreast of developments in different sectors. Public participation stands central to all of these methodologies to gauge perceptions, movements, projections, implied outcomes and ultimate impact on our residents and partners.”

Some of the issues discussed at the meeting included the spatial development framework to guide municipalities on how to utilise the land.

Hennie van der Walt is glad nie ’n bangbroek as dit by die verwydering van reptiele kom nie.

Die dapper 28-jarige het al talle slange en ander reptiele in die Goudveld namens benoude inwoners verwyder.

Reptiele het Hennie van kleins af gefassineer.

Sy stiefpa, Gerrie Botha, deel Hennie se liefde vir reptiele en spog self met ’n wye verskeidenheid slange en ander reptiele. Hy het Hennie se belangstelling gekweek en hom oor reptiele geleer.

In Hennie se vrye tyd lees hy graag oor reptiele en maak hy gebruik van boeke soos Slange/Snakes deur Johan Marais om die reptiele uit te ken.

Hy beoog om nog ’n volledige kursus oor die hantering en verwydering van reptiele te doen.

Hennie werk in die sekuriteitsbedryf, maar om reptiele te vang, is sy stokperdjie.

“Hoe gevaarliker en giftiger hulle is,

hoe meer fassineer hulle my. Dit is dan natuurlik ook ’n lekker uitdaging,” sê Hennie.

“Ek moet nog so baie leer, maar ek kan al die meeste uitken en weet ook hoe om hulle te hanteer.”

In Riebeeckstad het hy al sewe rinkhalse gevang, en in Welkom twee geelslange en drie likkewane. Rinkhalse kom ook in die Odendaalsrusomgewing voor, sê hy.

Pofadders bewonder hy, hoewel hy nog nie vreeslik baie met dié slang te doen gekry het nie.

Hennie hanteer alle reptiele as giftig totdat hy hulle kan uitken.

Wanneer hy onseker is, gaan steek hy kers by kundiges op.

Hy ontvang gereeld oproepe van benoude inwoners om bruin huisslange te gaan vang.

Een só voorval was toe hy op Saterdag 7 April in Constantiaweg, Welkom, ’n bruin huisslang onder ’n bad moes gaan verwyder het.

Hy gebruik ’n grypstok, ’n haak, ’n vol gesigskerm en ’n streepsak om die koudbloedige oortreders te vang.

Hy vat ook houers saam waarin hy die reptiele veilig verwyder.

Wanneer Hennie die reptiele gevang het, laat hy hulle minstens vyf tot tien kilometer buite die dorp in die veld vry waar hulle nie gesteur kan word nie.

“Die moeilikste reptiel wat gevang moet word, is die een wat ek eers moet soek,” sê hy.

“Ek vra gewoonlik vir die inwoners om die reptiel dop te hou en vra hulle om ’n foto te neem sodat ek die reptiel kan uitken.”

Hoewel hy slegs ná ure die reptiele kan verwyder, is mense welkom om hom te bel en foto’s te stuur.

Sover sy kennis strek, is hy een van min wat reptiele in die Goudveld verwyder. Hy staan ook gereeld die Dierebeskermingsvereniging by.

Hy is bereid om mense binne ’n 150 km radius van Welkom te help. Hy versoek ook dat mense nie reptiele moet doodmaak nie.

Ongeveer 90% van die tyd is hulle Hennie van der Walt is een van min wat in die onskadelik.

Project contributes to cleaning up The Social Reintegration Office of the Department of Correctional Services in Odendaalsrus completed another successful outreach. On Wednesday, 14 March, this unit cleaned the satellite offices of the police in Nyakallong, Allanridge. “These projects, such as cleaning up, bring this office to the community it serves,” says Millicent Mokhele, head of Community Corrections in Odendaalsrus. Previously the office was involved in cleaning the graveyard in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus. Learners shown the ropes The junior police commanders of different schools in Matjhabeng visited the Welkom Police Station on 20 March.

They were introduced to the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and were given the opportunity to ask questions about the police in general.

“The SAPS management took heed of the National Youth Crime Prevention Strategy which directs that learners be elected to emulate the leadership of the police environment,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson.

According to Thakeng, the aim is for learners to deal with issues like bullying, the abuse of liquor and

other related crimes committed within the school premises.

“There will also be an awareness campaign to empower the youth about criminal activities, and encourage them to assist in solving crimes.”

Capt. Nomathemba Motlomelo and the Social Crime Prevention Unit are the custodians of this project.

Die eerste skoolhoof van die Laerskool Bronville, Lodewyk Goodman, het met sy aftrede in 1994 geskryf dat hy deur die destydse Kleurlingsake aangestel is.

Hy het saam met vier onderwysers die skool in Januarie 1968 geopen.

Die skool het met ’n leerlingtal van 285 begin.

Die leerlinge het in alle skoolvakke van sub-A tot st. 5 onderrig ontvang.

Die skool het in Junie 1968 sy eerste inspeksie gehad.

Goodman het geskryf hoe buitemuurse aktiwiteite soos sokker en netbal begin is.

In 1994 het die personeel van die Laerskool Bronville afskeid geneem van kollegas wat gesamentlik 102 jaar in die onderwys was.

Een van hulle was Lodewyk Goodman, die skool se eerste hoof. Hy en vier ander personeellede het in 1968 die laerskool begin. Lodewyk was meer as 39 jaar in die onderwys.

Muriel Damons (22 jaar diens) en Sarah-Rose Baardman (42 jaar diens) het saam met hom afgetree. Thomas Williams was skoolhoof toe Goodman in 1994 as onderwyser afgetree het, en Stella Williams het in dieselfde jaar die tuig by Thomas oorgeneem.

Importance of libraries celebrated The Thabong SAPS Academy from Welkom celebrated the annual Library Week, which took place in March.

Well-known photoguru, photojournalist and teacher of photography Sue Jewell has left Welkom after 33 years.

She leaves an indelible mark on the community, and especially on the Goldfields world of photography.

Sue, her husband, Chris, and their one-year-old daughter, Tasmyn, arrived in Welkom from Johannesburg in 1984.

Originally a biology teacher, Sue is a photographer who is passionate about children, wildlife, dogs and hiking in the Natal Drakensberg.

In 1986 Sue and Magda Fourie opened a photographic studio, Images Photographers, in Welkom.

To this day there are Welkom people who have fond memories of weddings, bat and bar mitzvahs, baptisms, first holy communions and confirmations, matric farewells and special birthdays through her photographs.

In fact, there were people who had such faith in Sue’s proclivity for photography that she was asked to capture their weddings in venues all over South Africa.

One of her favourite photographic jobs was underground photography.

Sue was so fond of this aspect of photography that she developed a photographic programme for the manager of a Welkom gold mine to lecture on underground aeration.

Sue is remembered for her photographs of Welkom for the first Welkom Publicty Brochure, which was launched a thousand metres underground in the St Helena Gold Mine Wine Cellar.

To this day postcards and posters still pop up from time to time using Sue’s images of Welkom.

In 1987, she was asked to serve on the Welkom Publicity Association for her input into Welkom. Her term of office was during Frans Aucamp’s chairmanship. At the time the late Aucamp was the editor of Vista.

tee, work which ranged from organising a photographic exhibition in the then new Liberty Centre, to establishing the first Welkom flea market. She developed close bonds with many of the members, in particular the late Ian Auret.

Sue’s passion for photography led her into photojournalism, both in Johannesburg and in Welkom and d she freely offered her services to the Vista newspaper.

Her photographs of the Welkom m tornado, the Merriespruit slimes dam tragedy, the jockey’s aeroplane cras sh outside Hennenman and many others gone were seen on the front pages of byg Vista’s.

Sue loves telling a story, or being part of history by capturing that momentt in time.

While still running her photo studiio in the late eighties and early nineties, Sue was asked by St Agnes (now St Dominic’s College) to do some part-time teaching of Gr. 11’s and Gr. 12’s as the teacher (Mandy Logan) was on maternity leave.

Sue then realised how much she had missed both teenagers and biology. So when the teacher returned, and the then new headmaster of St Andrew’s High School, Tony Law, asked Sue to do the same at that school, she did not hestitate.

At about this time, she was also elected as a director of the Photographic Society of South Africa. Running a photo studio, teaching, being a director, mother and wife became a real juggling game.

Tasmyn was now four years old and enrolled into the St Andrew’s PreSchool. In addition, Sue was elected as the chairman of St Andrew’s PTA. The School had been given a large sum of money to build a new pre-school, media centre and a high school block, with well equipped science and biology facilities.

Needless to say, Sue threw herself into the new project with arms wide open. Sue became a full time Biology teacher at St Andrew’s School. With a handful of teachers, and a faithful band of five Gr. 8’s, the high school was rearing to go.

And in 1990 it all begun; Christopher was head of the high school, Tasmyn was in Gr. 1; and the new media centre, pre-school and high school block were in place.

The high school soon became a force to be reckoned with. It was during this time that Sue joined forces with Neil McGill, the then headmaster of the Welkom High School to get the science expo up and running.

Sue served as science expo chairman for several years, uplifting the Goldfields to be amongst the top in the country.

Her students did the first project on HIV/AIDS, which not only received a national gold award, but they were teaching the first year medical students.

is a medical doctor in England with two daughters and André Goodrich is a Doctor of Anthropology lecturing at NW University with one daughter.

Under Sue’s guidace the concept of expo grew at St Andrew’s. She also introduced educational field trips and started a photographic club.

This photographic club, affiliated to the Photographic Society of South Africa, went on to become the top school photo club in the country for many years.

The club has now moved to its new home at St Dominic’s College.

It was in the early 90’s that Sue was promoted as deputy head at St Andrew’s School.

During this period the school went from strength to strength; it was a flourishing little school with its own ethos holding its ground with other top private schools with regards to academics and cultural activities.

Sue took off teaching for six months in order to market the school to increase the numbers.

This was a successful venture, as the school at one point was full and children were placed on a waiting list.

When Tasmyn matriculated in 2001, Sue decided it was time for a whole new venture.

With the help of Tasmyn (who had taken a gap year) Bio-Ed was created.

Sue was in her element in the bush, teaching children and taking photographs. Biology and leadership programmes became the order of the day.

Schools from Welkom, Virginia, Wesselsbron, Bloemfontein, Bethlehem, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg made Bio-Ed very stimulating, challenging and enjoyable.

Sue continued her passion at the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve and Tasmyn went off to Free State University to study Occupational Therapy.

With the help of facilitators Bio-Ed grew. When Aldam needed a new manager, they approached Sue, and of course she added that to her already heavy load, once again juggling two huge tasks. It was here at Willem Pretorius that Sue became an honorary game ranger. Her passion and love for the rhinos earned her the name the “Rhino Whisperer”.

In 2010 Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a hard decision for Sue to put her bush life behind her and come back to Welkom, but there was

little choice. The Bio-Ed programmes were just too physically demanding.

Not to be stopped, Sue now decided to start her own photographic school – Jewell Photo School. She embarked on sharing her passion with adults over the whole spectrum, from mineworkers to housewives and of course children.Sue has taught and shared her passion of photography with over 1 000 individuals.

Her students have done extremely well by achieving national and international awards in different competitions and awards.

One of her earlier photographic students, Igor Polzenhaugen, has gone on to be one of the top fashion photographers in Cape Town.

The wonderful thing is she still keeps contact with all her students and loves hearing of their successes, and failures.

Her photographic high notes were not only achieving five associateships and a fellowship, but her many photo road trips with the PSSA, SAVAS and friends.

The highlight, of course, being her trip to Vietnam with Charlotte Wessels, a pioneer of Welkom.

Sue was director of the Photographic Society of South Africa for 23 years.

She continues to give input at the society. This year Sue is the director of the National Youth Salon of the Photographic Society of South Africa.

While Sue was at Willem Pretorius, Charlotte Wessels had kept the camera club (SAVAS) alive. The club has now been left in the capable hands of Chris Nel. Sue will continue to be inolved in the club, and she will also continue to judge and will visit the club from time to time.

Sue is grateful for her many blessings and extremely sad to be leaving Welkom.

“In 33 years one makes a lifetime of friends and acquaintances,” says Sue. “I will miss everyone, everyone was a friend, from my pharmacist to my hair dresser, my fellow educators and photographers, my dentist, doctors and specialists and yes Marti Will and her Vista crew.

“Pardon the old cliché, but it is so true: You only cry twice.”

School hosts Belgium Junior Orchestra On 12 April the Moremaphofu Primary School in Thabong hosted visitors from Belgium and a joint concert was held at the Lebogang High School.

The primary school orchestra and the Belgium Junior Orchestra played together, and also did individual renditions.

Learners of the Moremaphofu Primary School started taking violin classes under the auspices of the Manguang String Programme at the school in 2017.

Victoria Moshoi (teacher), Sello Ramotshabi (departmental head) and Alfred Julius (principal) are responsible for the class.

Violin teachers from Bloemfontein, Thabo Sefudi, Dineo Molebatsi and William Nobela, present the lessons at the school under the leadership of Peter Guy.

The Moremaphofu Primary School is the only public school in Lejweleputswa to have an orchestra. There are ten cello players and 18 violin players.

Storm werk nou in Hermanus en tydens ’n ete saam met haar vriendin in Zebardines, ’n spoggerige restaurant, word ’n gehate kosblogger vergiftig.

Dit blyk dat daar giftige sampioene in haar kos was. Dit is maar net die begin van Storm se probleme.

Haar oudkollega, Andreas Moerdyk, daag sak en pak op haar drumpel op. Hy het bedank en kom soek ’n nuwe heenkome in Hermanus.

Terwyl al die restaurante in die omgewing reg maak vir fooddot- Gifbeker com, ’n restaurant- en koswebtuiste, se toekenningsaand, waar die beste sjefs in die land vereer word, eis die moordenaar nog slagoffers.

Young rapper takes charge with first mixtape release Tshepo Khooejane (28) is a rapper from Kutlwanong who performs as Pimpjuice Youngen.

Pimpjuice is co-owner of CMI Records and he has achieved a lot since he started doing music in 2002.

In 2009, Pimpjuice received a certificate at the Seqhobong High School for best rapper and in 2012 he won the KZN Rap Idol, which was held at the Rand Easter Show and was hosted by DJ Fresh.

Here Pimpjuice Youngen defeated ten rappers from all over South

Africa.

In 2013 he opened the stage for DJ Finzo and Teargas at the Sipho Mutsi event, hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in Bloemfontein, and in 2015 he was a contestant on the Mzansi Magic Music Show. Here he won R5 000.

Pimpjuice Youngen also performed at the ANC 100 year celebration in Bloemfontein.

In January 2018 he released his first mixtape CD, Kasi Dreamz, and he started his own clothing brand with the label Ghetto Snob.

Rum is vir mense wat die lewe laat gebeur, sê die Bruns-broers van Welkom.

Leon Bruns, sy broer, Trevor, en Trevor se swaer Stephan Vos se rumstokery is in die hartjie van die Vrystaat tussen Hennenman en Welkom geleë.

Trevor sê sover hy weet is dit die grootste rumdistilleerdery in die land.

Die rum, met die handelsnaam Whistler, word sedert November bemark.

“Ons het op die naam Whistler besluit omdat rummense hul eie deuntjie fluit,” sê Trevor.

Volgens hom het hulle in 2015 met idees gespeel om iets nuuts te begin.

Hulle was lus vir ’n nuwe uitdaging, en die filosofie rondom rum was vir hulle aanloklik.

“Rum is vir mense wat die lewe láát gebeur, anders as whisky- en jenewerdrinkers wat kyk hoe die lewe gebeur,” sê Trevor.

Hy en Stephan is ingenieurs en Leon is ’n beleggingsbestuurder. Maar

by Whistler doen Trevor die bemarking, is Leon die meesterdistilleerder en hanteer Stephan die verkope.

Die werker Kantoor Mzaka help Leon met die distillering van die rum.

Hoewel Kantoor voorheen ’n joernalis wou word, het die rumgogga hom nou gebyt.

Die manne het aan die begin van 2016 besluit om hulle op die distillering van rum toe te spits, en hulle het die Internasionale Rumfees in Miami bygewoon.

In April 2016 het die twee broers by die Rum-Universiteit in Amerika, wat deel is van die Moonshine-Universiteit in Louisville, Kentucky, ’n kursus in die vervaardiging van rum gedoen.

Hulle het ook by bekende distilleerders in Amerika gaan kers opsteek en die volgende maand begin om die toerusting te bou.

Die Afrikastyl-rum te laat dubbelwand, waarin goedkeur. stoom gesirkuleer Rum is vir mense African Style Rum word, verhit die bier. wat die lewe laat moet in Afrika Die alkohol begestook word, dit weeg op in ’n gebeur, anders as moet in toerusting kondensasietoring whisky- en jenewerwat op die vastewaar dit dan teen land vervaardig is, drinkers wat kyk hoe koperplate kondengedistilleer word, die seer en in een van die lewe gebeur. onverwerkte bestandvier tenks invloei. dele moet in Afrika geproTrevor verduidelik dat duseer word en die stoker die vloeistof wat gekondenseer moet ’n gebore en getoë Afrikaan word, uit ’n kop, die eerste vloeistof, wees. Leon, die keldermeester, hou dié Whistler se rum word in whisky- en proses die heeltyd dop omdat dit baie brandewynvate verouder wat uit die belangrik is om net die hart van die Wes-Kaap kom. gedistilleerde vloeistof te gebruik.

Trevor sê twee tenks van 5 000 liter Sodra die alkohol wat by die tenk uitvloei die regte smaak en geur het, word dit in een van twee tenks, die twee harte, getap. Die vierde tenk is vir die stert. Die kop word weggegooi, die twee harte is die ware Jakob wat die regte smake en alkoholinhoud het, en die stert moet weer gedistilleer word voor dit gebruik kan word.

Die gedistilleerde alkohol moet genoeg geur en smaak hê om goeie rum te kan maak. Die beste gehalte vloeistof bevat ongeveer 80% alkohol, sê Trevor.

Dit word hierna in tenks getap waarin of Franse of Amerikaanse eikehoutplankies gesit word. Die alkohol absorbeer die tannien en karamelsmake wat deel van die kenmerke van die rum moet wees.

Wanneer die tyd reg is, word die rum na vaatjies oorgetap om verder te verouder. Die rum wat Amerikaanse eikehoutplankies in gehad het, Wanneer die suikerbier kondenseer, vloei dit in een van vier tenks. Dié proses word word nou in vaatjies van Amerikaanse deurlopend dopgehou sodat net die beste vloeistof met die regte alkoholinhoud ge- eikehout getap. Die rum wat met bruik word om rum te maak. Hier is Trevor Bruns by een van die krane waar die gehalte Franse eikehoutplankies gegeur is, word in Franse eikehoutvate verouder. van die gedistilleerde alkohol getoets word.

Die Amerikaanse eikehout is gebruik om whisky te verouder en die Franse eikehoutvate vir brandewyn, sê Trevor.

Volgens hom is die Vrystaat se klimaat ideaal vir die verouderingsproses omdat die warm dae en koel nagte maak dat die rum baie geure uit die hout opneem. Die hoogte van 1 500 m bo seespieël is ook ideaal om rum van goeie gehalte te maak. ’n Soleraproses (alkoholiese veroudering waarin die eindproduk ’n mengsel van verskillende ouderdomme is) word gebruik waar net ’n kwart van die rum uit elke vaatjie gehaal word. Dit word met rum uit die ander vaatjies vermeng sodat die rum altyd dieselfde smake het.

Sodoende word ’n eenvormige gehalte verseker, sê Trevor.

Omdat van die rum altyd in die vate agterbly, verbeter dit die gehalte van die rum wat gebottel word.

Die rum word as donker rum gebottel, terwyl speserye in ander vate verouder word om saam met die rum te meng vir ’n speseryrum. Die broers sê hul speserymengsel is ’n geheim, maar kaneel is een van die hoofbestanddele.

Wind, fluitjies en ’n filosofie om jou eie ding te doen, is deel van die Whistler-handelsmerk.

Die bottel se ontwerp is op ’n trein se stoomfluitjie geskoei, en ’n uitbeelding van die wind se gesig is op die bottel geëts. Trevor sê die bottels is spesiaal vir hul rum ontwerp en word in China vervaardig.

“Ons sal baie graag die bottel hier wil koop, maar op die oomblik is dit nie kostedoeltreffend nie,” sê hy.

Rumliefhebbers kan een keer per maand die plaas besoek waar hulle mengeldrankies met rum as basis kan geniet.

Een van die broers se gunstelingdrankies is die Free State Sandstorm, ’n mengsel van gemmerbier en rum.

Mense kan ook vooraf bespreek om as ’n groep die plaas te besoek.

Kantoor Mzaka en Leon Bruns besig in die distilleerdery. Kantoor sê hy wil niks anders doen as om rum te maak nie.

Die Griffons het die rugbyseisoen op ’n hoë noot afgeskop toe hulle hul segetog Saterdag (21/04) teen die Luiperds voortgesit het.

Die Luiperds het in SchweizerReneke in die stof gebyt toe die Perstruie hulle met 47 – 21 geklop het.

Die Griffons se kaptein, Duan Pretorius, het van die begin af met mening ingeklim en kort ná afskoptyd reeds ’n drie gedruk.

Jean Pretorius (flank), Juan Kotzé (losskakel) en Warren Williams (vleuel) was ook vuur en vlam. Die Luiperds kon net nie die mas opkom nadat die Perstruie reeds vroeg in die wedstryd op die telbord was nie.

“Die manne is topfiks en slaggereed vir die seisoen en het dit Saterdag weer bewys,” het Oersond Gorgonzola, afrigter

van die Griffons, gesê.

Die Luiperds se puntemakers vir die dag was Eugene Hare, Gene Willemse en HP Swart wat drieë gedruk het en DP de Lange en Schalk Hugo wat vir die doelskoppe verantwoordelik was.

Duan Pretorius en Jean Pretorius het elk twee drieë gedruk en Juan Kotzé, Arthur Williams en Warren Williams was die ander puntemakers vir die dag.

Juan Kotzé het ’n uitstekende wedstryd gehad en altesaam 17 punte met ’n drie en ses doelskoppe aangeteken.

Die twee spanne het gedurende die 2017-seisoen in drie kragmetings te staan gekom.

Die Perstruie was onoorwonne en het met die Luiperds met onderskeidelik 28 - 22, 60 - 36 en 33 - 17 afgereken.

Die Griffons speel Saterdag (28/04) teen die Vrystaat Cheetahs in die HT Pelatona-stadion in Welkom.
