Woodford Files OPINION
Ah, here comes summer at last, and with it the strong solar rays that kill viruses and boost vitamin D levels. Just what the doctor ordered! In this issue, we return to our core principle of freedom of choice in health care, which is under threat once again. Firstly, we find out in Helke Ferrie’s feature this month that the College of Physicians and Surgeons is seeking a return to an outdated medical model by proposing a policy to wipe out access to natural and alternative medicine. Specifically, the CPSO is getting ready to clamp down on Ontario doctors, and stop them from offering the public any therapies that do not conform to the rigid Western medical model. So our ability to choose, for example, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for hot flashes, or nutritional medicine for heart disease, or anything considered ‘alternative’ would be stopped in its tracks. The second threat to our freedom of choice in healthcare comes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only are natural treatments and preventive measures being denied by medical authorities, they are also being censored by social media platforms and news agencies. So instead of real “news” being broadcast on the TV or computer, we’re getting biased stories that discredit the most basic immune-boosting strategies, while at the same time suppressing information about reported side effects of vaccination (e.g. blood clots, Bell’s Palsy,

strokes, neurological disorders, and death). This lopsided approach to pandemic reporting is making it difficult for those of us who wish to make a fully informed choice about prevention and treatment, including the question of vaccine safety, to make solid decisions. So I fail to see how this serves the best interests of public health. Fortunately, there are dedicated health professionals the world over who are daring to share their health advice even if it goes against the prevailing medical narrative. In fact, there’s a group of doctors in our own backyard, called the “Canadian Physicians for Science and Truth” who have instigated a Declaration and are asking everyone to sign it. The Declaration reads (in part): “On April 30, 2021, Ontario’s physician licensing body, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, issued a statement forbidding physicians from questioning or debating any or all of the official measures imposed in response to COVID-19... The CPSO is also ordering physicians to violate the sacred duty of informed consent – which is the process by which the patient/public is fully informed of the risks, benefits and any alternatives to the treatment or intervention, before consent is given.” You can find the full text of the Declaration posted on their website at: https://canadianphysicians.org/ Meantime, Dr. Zoltan Rona, who has been with us throughout the pandemic offering advice on keeping well, has written a feature this month entitled “Preventing Blood Clots Naturally”. This will be of interest to those who are worried that blood clot formation has become an increasingly common reaction to vaccination. JW

CPSO Seeks Return to Outdated Medical Model
Medical Authorities Ready to Remove Your Access to Complementary / Alternative Medicine BY HELKE FERRIE
OPINION
The requirements for doctors to practice Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) are already covered by the existing legislation, regulations, and other policies. This new CAM policy proposed by the CPSO is an insult to medical science and Ontario’s doctors. It takes away patients’ choices, and will probably will cause more excellent doctors to disappear. Furthermore, it is coercive to doctors who would be forced to practice against their better knowledge and experience.
or the past 30 years, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has been imposing their archaic and misguided notion of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) on all of us. Stuck in an endless cycle of repeating the same errors in judgment over and over again, it’s been Groundhog Day at the CPSO for decades. But unlike in the movie, enlightenment is more remote than ever for the folks at 80 College Street. This year, their delusions have manifested in a proposed new CAM policy (the first two were drafted in 1997 and 2011) that is based on an outdated medical model. I think it’s important that you read the policy and respond. Your access to the healthcare of your choice is at stake. This time around, the CPSO is on a mission to purge medicine in Ontario of all that’s unscientific – as defined by them. The CPSO is therefore determined to save us from natural health and alternative medicine. Meantime, Health Canada reported in February of this year that about 200,000 serious adverse events occurred as a result of correctly prescribed drugs, which in turn caused about 22,000 deaths. This is roughly as many as died from COVID-19 this past year. Unlike COVID-19, these drug-related deaths happen every year. These adverse drug events costs Canada between $13.7 and $17.7 billion, depending on the year. Yet it hasn’t occurred to the CPSO to come up with a new and improved prescription policy for drugs found to be dangerous by research published in medical journals. So much for serving and protecting the public – their legal mandate.

No Deaths From Nutritional Medicine
In January 2021, the 37th annual report from the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported zero deaths from any nutritional supplement in Clinical Toxicology (for the 10th year in a row). The same result held for homeopathic remedies, Asian and Ayurvedic medicines, and herbal remedies. Maybe all those survivors could have benefitted more if steered into standard medicine? Well, the Canadian Cancer Society still only gives you a 50% to 63% chance of surviving five years after a cancer diagnosis. This survival rate has not improved since my grandmother died in 1924 – she lived for five years after her breast cancer diagnosis without any treatment at all. “This Is Illegal”
This time around, the CPSO is determined to provide doctors with new guidelines that effectively eliminate the need for clinical judgement, and specifically prevent doctors from straying outside of their “scope of practice”. According to the policy authors, “standard medicine” (what exactly is that?) should be the only medicine legally allowed – and doctors better obey or risk losing their licences to practise. Without a single reference to support this dictate, the CAM policy informs doctors that no treatments may be performed without published scientific support to justify them. That’s fine. The 2011 policy appropriately requires that doctors be informed by science because that is sufficient and reasonable. But the proposed new CAM Policy requires every medical action to be “supported by evidence”. This is basically unachievable for standard or CAM practice because neither can have, or does have, double-blind placebo-controlled studies to support all therapeutic actions. Interestingly, other Canadian provinces do not make this absurd distinction in their CAM policies. The CPSO claims to have done a jurisdictional review. Really? The CAM policy of BC is the clearest and most useful – a page and a half. So startled was one of the original authors of Ontario’s Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), Professor Gilbert Sharpe, after reading this draft policy, he said: “This is illegal.” He specifically was surprised that Section 5.1 of the Medicine Act was not mentioned. So on March 25 he wrote a letter to the CPSO Registrar and its Policy Department outlining his objections. Sharpe pointed out that this policy would effectively limit patient access to safe and effective treatments and curtail their personal autonomy. He also pointed out that this policy could effectively be www.vitalitymagazine.com

used to discipline doctors arbitrarily. (Watch the interview with Professor Sharpe on the ONPIM website.) After 25 years of dealing with the CPSO, I would guess that this is exactly their intention. Patients Will Lose Access to Alternative Therapies
In 2017, PloS journal
published a report that
showed how the use of complementary and
alternative medicine
has steadily increased,
especially among educated and older people, often alongside
standard treatments
The authors of the new policy seem to know little of complementary and alternative medicine, or integrative medicine. The CPSO, careful to avoid potential dissent, provides not a single scientific source to help us figure out where they got their ideas from. They don’t even seem to know what is in the Healthcare Consent Act which effectively puts patients in charge of their therapy choices. By diminishing patients’ rights, this policy makes it difficult for doctors to prove what is safe and effective among what is available. I am beginning to wonder if the CAM policy authors ever read PubMed, the repository of published medical research. Their stated intention of ensuring patient safety is bizarre – the policy reiterates professional misconduct already included in the Medicine Act Regulations and by which all doctors are bound. In 2017, PLoS (an open-access medical journal) published an analysis of who actually uses complementary and alternative medicine in Canada. They showed how the use of CAM has steadily increased, especially among educated and older people, often alongside standard treatments. Further, the CAM policy authors appear unaware that many Ontario medical schools teach courses in CAM or integrative medicine. (In May 2019, the University of Toronto announced a new department to govern these courses.) The authors of this proposed CAM policy want consumers to unquestioningly accept that complementary and alternative medicine is unscientific. How so? The notion of positive patient outcome is studiously avoided. Justice Michael Code, when still a lawyer with Sack Goldblatt Mitchell, referred to this “disregard for patient satisfaction” as proof that the CPSO lives in “La-la Land”.
8
VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2021
www.vitalitymagazine.com
To top it all off, the authors assert that this policy will help patients to make “informed decisions” and have access to treatments of their choice. Really? They conclude that it hopefully is a “right touch regulation”. (Sledgehammer is more like it.) Worst of all, if doctors can no longer provide these safe and effective complementary and alternative therapies, patients are put at risk (they chose CAM because nothing else helped them). In the 1990s, a huge public battle to defend alternative medicine resulted in the passage of the Kwinter Bill – named after then MPP Monte Kwinter who sponsored it. The CPSO’s traditional hostility toward CAM is loud and clear by what this proposed policy takes pains to omit: Section 5.1 of the Medicine Act of Ontario. That section is the famous “Kwinter Bill” which became law in 2000. The CPSO had initially fought its passage tooth and nail, but Ontario’s legislature passed it unanimously into law. It now is also in the other provincial legislations. It states: “5.1. A member shall not be found guilty of professional misconduct or of incompetence under section 51 or 52 of the Health Professions Procedural Code solely on the basis that the member practises a therapy that is non-traditional or that departs from the prevailing medical practice unless there is evidence that proves that the therapy poses a greater risk to a patient’s health than the traditional or prevailing practice. 2000, c.28, s.1.” Governing Body or Dictatorship?
Given that no CAM practitioners were involved in drafting this policy, and no published evidence has been provided to support the necessity of this policy (e.g. dead bodies? increasing numbers of disciplinary hearings of CAM doctors?) – one has to wonder what is going on here. The proposed policy ignores existing law (Section 5.1) which would nix it at once. Given its administrative law powers, the CPSO guards its right to be policymaker, standards-setter, rule-maker, investigator, prosecutor (of errant doctors), judge and jury, and enforcer as they see fit – without providing justification. They get away with it because the government generally is hands-off with so-called self-governing bodies. So, what can we expect if this new CAM Policy is

If this CAM Policy approved? Well, it’s worse than receives final approval another Groundhog Day. it would become Here’s an example: In 2002, the infamous Krop impossible for doctors case, prosecuted by the CPSO to provide the safe and from 1988 to 2003, was going effective complementainto its final stage. Dr. Jozef ry therapies on which Krop had been accused of patients rely. Any doctors doing so would “professional misconduct and become sitting ducks incompetence” (as the archaic for the CPSO’s language of Section 64 (now disciplinary attacks. 75) of the Regulated Health Professions Act puts it) because he treated patients for the detrimental health effects of environmental poisons like pesticides and mercury amalgam fillings. At that time, this was a new and emerging field in medicine. While commencing with an appeal (after the CPSO had found Dr. Krop guilty in June 1999 without a single patient complaint or documented medical mishap), we arrived at lawyer Michael Code’s office with six banker’s boxes full of medical publications, and he asked: “What’s this?” Dr. Krop replied: “These boxes contain the published studies on which my treatments are based – the same treatments the CPSO charged me with.” In all, we had 123 research publications from leading medical journals ignored by the CPSO in favour of their unsubstantiated opinions. Although they ultimately backed off from removing Dr. Krop’s licence, they did reprimand him formally and decreed that henceforth he must have every patient sign a consent form stating, in the CPSO’s wording, that all of his treatments were based only on his opinion and had no scientific basis. (Nevermind those banker’s boxes containing scientific proof.) During his trial, the prosecuting CPSO did not table a single research piece to support their charges. Twenty years later, the CPSO is trying to impose once again a rigid framework for medical practice built upon the falsehood that CAM is unscientific. If they win, any doctor who recommends, for example, safe bio-identical hormones instead of Premarin (known to cause cancer and blood clots), or diet and exercise instead of drugs to lower blood pressure (known to cause heart attacks) – those same

doctors would be at increased risk a disciplinary hearing. If this CAM policy receives final approval it would become impossible for doctors to provide the safe and effective therapies on which patients rely. The doctors doing so would be sitting ducks for the CPSO’s disciplinary attacks. Patients would have to leave Ontario to find other sources of these therapies, and doctors trained in them would be advised to leave, too. CAM is treated more respectfully elsewhere in Canada. Defend Your Right to Alternative Treatments
The CPSO has demonstrated over three decades that they do not serve the public interest with regard to the advancement of medical practice (as they are mandated to do under the law). However, fossilized thinking disappears slowly, so let’s help medical evolution along! Write a letter to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and ask that she order this CAM policy to be rejected. No, not revised. Completely rejected. (That’s exactly what Australia did in February!) The requirements for CAM are already covered by the existing legislation, regulations, and other policies. This proposed new CAM policy is an insult to medical science and Ontario’s doctors. It takes away patients’ choices, and will probably will cause more excellent doctors to disappear. Preventing Blood Clots Blood-thinning Herbs, Foods, and Supplements to Reduce Your Risk of Stroke and Heart Attack BY DR. ZOLTAN P. RONA, MD, MSc.
Blood clots are very much in the news these days but the mainstream media has not carried any information about their prevention. Many of my patients have been asking me to detail what they can do if they are confronted with a greater risk of blood clots that lead The usual adult dose of to circulation blockages and omega-3 fatty acids death from strokes, heart needed to effectively attacks, and respiratory failure. prevent blood clots is This article discusses the 4,000 mg of combined numerous ways of preventDHA and EPA daily ing blood clots and is intended only for people who are not already on anticoagulant drugs (“blood thinners”). If you are on prescription medications check with your doctor before using any of the natural remedies mentioned here. The very first thing you should know is your blood type. The reason for this is because certain blood types (A, B and AB) are more likely to have cardiovascular disease or blood clots than people with blood type O. Blood type Os are more likely to have a bleeding condition but less likely to get infections. Severe trauma will cause more bleeding and blood loss in type O’s than any other blood type – so know your type. I have always been amazed that 80% of the new patients I see in my practice do not know their blood type. If you do not know, ask your family doctor to do a simple blood test to inform you. Don’t let him/her talk you out of it because it’s very important to know, especially with regards to blood clotting risk. Some medications can increase the risk of blood clots in both men and women. Synthetic hormones used as hormone replacement drugs, as well as birth control pills and some anti-hypertensive and anti-cancer drugs can increase the risk of blood clots. With your doctor’s permission, keep doses as low as possible or use natural alternatives like bioidentical hormones that do not have that particular side effect. 28

Conventional sources will tell you that there are no natural remedies for preventing blood clots, but this is completely untrue. What is true is the good advice to stay active, get regular exercise to keep your circulation optimal, and lose weight if you are overweight. Sedentary behaviour can slow your blood circulation, and long periods of time sitting (like on an airplane flight) increases your blood clotting risk. Most adults would also benefit from drinking more water, especially when sitting for long periods of time. If you are prone to poor circulation, elevate your legs while sleeping to enhance circulation. Smoking either regular or electronic cigarettes can also increase blood clotting risks so quitting is a good idea. There are some foods that are best avoided because they increase the chances of creating more blood clots. These include diet sodas, artificial sweeteners, trans fats (in baked goods), refined carbohydrates, and sugar. Alcohol is also something that should be avoided, but many still argue for the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption. “While medicine bases some of its practices on scientifically derived data, the practice of medicine is not, itself, a science. Medicine is a discipline of opinion where accepted standards of practice are determined by a consensus of the majority, not by the scientific method.” Dr. David Stewart Chemistry of Essential Oils www.vitalitymagazine.com

Certain foods and common nutritional supplements may act as natural blood thinners. What follows are the most common ones that healthy adults can use to prevent blood clots. Turmeric: is a spice used for both culinary and Ginkgo biloba is medicinal reasons. It has antistrong enough to inflammatory and anticoagulant dissolve blood clots effects. Its major active ingredient but its best role is curcumin which has also been is as a preventive used in large dosages to treat cancer, arthritis, and multiple inflammatory conditions. Dose depends on tolerance and the purpose for using this spice.
1
Ginger: has long been known as an anti-inflammatory spice that can prevent blood clots. This herb has also been used to alleviate nausea and morning sickness in pregnant women, and to reduce the pain of arthritis.
2
Cayenne peppers: are high in natural salicylates (as in aspirin and white willow from which aspirin is derived). These peppers can also act as powerful blood thinning agents. The only drawback to eating these peppers is possibly aggravating your stomach lining. Some sensitive individuals experience heartburn so there are limitations with the amounts used. Cayenne is also available in capsules and has been used therapeutically to lower blood pressure, increase circulation, and reduce pain just about anywhere.
3
Vitamin E: is well known for reducing blood clotting and is contraindicated for those on prescription blood thinners. The usual effective dose for most adults is between 400 - 800 IU daily. Make sure you get the mixed tocopherol vitamin E complex that contains the alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherols and tocotrienols. Using only the d-alpha tocopherol will not give you the full vitamin E benefits. Good food sources of vitamin E include almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, mango, broccoli, spinach, kiwi, tomato, wheat germ oil and whole grains.
4
Garlic: especially garlic oil, has strong blood thinning effects. It’s also a natural antibiotic, blood pressure lowering agent, and can help reduce high cholesterol levels. Its antithrombotic effect reduces blood clot formation. Avoid using it prior to surgery or if you’re taking a prescription blood thinner. Studies show that raw garlic reverses plaque build-up and prevents new plaque formation in arteries.

6
Cinnamon: is a powerful blood thinning agent. It contains coumarin (from which Warfarin, a comwww.vitalitymagazine.com
monly used blood thinner is derived). When using other blood thinners, it’s recommended to only use cinnamon in small quantities to prevent excessive bleeding. Cinnamon also has a blood sugar lowering effect so diabetics need to be careful using it to avoid low blood sugar reactions. Ginkgo biloba extract: is mostly known for its memory enhancing effects. As one of my sons once pointed out: “no ginkgo, no thinko.” Ginkgo has also been used by many for low energy and blood clotting disorders. It accomplishes its effects by dissolving fibrin, a protein that tends to make the blood sticky and create a sluggish circulation. Ginkgo is strong enough to dissolve existing blood clots but its best role is as a preventive. It’s high in antioxidants and prevents damage to blood vessels thereby staving off high blood pressure. By the way, you can tell if fibrin is excessive in your blood by getting a livecell microscopy test done. It will show up on the blood film if in large amounts as will the stickiness of the blood. Routine blood tests can tell you the amount of fibrin in the blood relative to a normal range. That blood test is called fibrinogen and anyone can get it done if interested in their blood clot risk.
7
Omega-3: from fish oils has strong anti-inflammatory, blood thinning and cardiovascular disease preventive effects. No wonder it remains one of the top best selling supplements in health food stores and pharmacies. The usual adult effective dose to prevent blood clots is 4,000 mg of combined DHA and EPA daily. Furthermore, DHA in particular is now being recommended to help prevent and treat age related macular degeneration. Buy Canadian omega-3 products because they have had the mercury and other toxins removed from the fish oil. For those with an objection to using animal products, the alternatives are flaxseed oil and sea buckthorn, both of which are vegan sources.
8
Nattokinase: is a powerful fibrinolytic enzyme that has been used for centuries as a tool for reversing cardiovascular disease. Up until a few years ago, Health Canada refused to authorize its use (probably because it had been touted as an alternative to prescription anticoagulants). I wrote an article in Vitality on the politics behind banning this valuable supplement. In any event, nattokinase is now legally available in Canada. Combining this enzyme with omega-3 supplementation yields best results. The usual effective dose is 100 mg, twice daily, on an empty stomach. It should never be used in combination with prescription anticoagulants.

Conclusion
DR. ZOLTAN RONA, MD
Enzymes: like bromelain from pineapples, serrapeptase derived from the silkworm, and other pancreatic digestive enzymes can also dissolve fibrin and reduce the risks of blood clots. For blood clot prevention and treatment they work best when taken on an empty stomach. If the enzymes are taken to digest foods better, they can all be taken with food.

A natural health care provider’s advice on diet and appropriate supplementation would be based on biochemical individuality, so it’s highly recommended that you don’t make any changes on your own without some professional guidance
As can be seen, one has many choices that can be used naturally to prevent blood clots. Since everyone is biochemically unique, there is not a one-sizefits-all as far as diet and supplement recommendations are concerned. For a personalized program see a natural health care practitioner. e all want to lead productive lives filled with good friends, meaningful work, great health and abundance. Why is it that so many of us fail to reach our goals? I see the full range of human suffering in my practice as a psychotherapist. One person is lonely, while another has a serious physical illness. One person has trouble finding meaning, while another suffers with a low opinion of themselves. Is it really possible to be happy? It is my deep conviction, personal knowledge, and experience that real happiness is possible; it is born out of a deep and continuous commitment to one’s own personal growth and spiritual path. Let’s make this more concrete. We are all like houses. In this analogy, the house represents the totality of our being – body, conscious mind, subconscious mind and soul. What happens if we don’t clean house on a continual basis? Dust, dirt and clutter ensue. What is the answer to the dilemma of a messy home? First of all, by simply becoming aware that our house is messy (our life is out of balance or there is something we are feeling a pull to start paying attention to) we have made an enormous first step towards transformation of the house. My own journey began with paying attention to diet. At age 17, I was fortunate to move away from a diet of refined sugar and processed foods towards a more whole foods way of eating. Also at this age, I began a practice of hatha yoga. Immediately, the house felt lighter and I 34

A Lightness of Being
Exploring the Benefits of Throwing Open the Windows of the Subconscious by Laurie Weinberg, RP
With commitment and perseverance, we can begin to create a different life for ourselves; this is when the subconscious mind, having previously run the show without any awareness, starts to become conscious could appreciate the beauty around me more. I had a great shift in consciousness just from making changes in diet and incorporating yoga. However, I still had a strong feeling of heaviness in the house because I was ignoring the basement and many of the cabinets and closets. I was suffering from a spiritual melancholy (a sign that the house needs attention) throughout my 20s, and landed in psychotherapy. I soon realized that the sugary cookie I had ingested was not entirely to blame for my saddened mood. After many years of deep exploration and experiencing the benefits of inner housecleaning first hand, I decided to become a psychotherapist/hypnotherapist. In this analogy, I wanted to be part of someone else’s
inner cleaning team. Why are healing modalities such as hypnotherapy and psychotherapy so powerful in cleaning the house? When we embark on a course of therapy, it is akin to saying: “OK, enough, time to get to work.” We begin to pay attention and sort through accumulated layers of lifetimes of emotional and spiritual baggage.
It’s Okay to Get Help However, we don’t have to be alone on this journey. In fact, there are times when we need a team. The composition of our team will change during the various stages of our major house transformation. At one point, it could be composed of a nutritionist and a yoga teacher. At another point, our team may consist of a homeopath, psychotherapist and massage therapist. We can move through our house renovation in stages, perhaps paying attention to the basement for a while and later renovating the kitchen. There is no magic formula for coming out of density. Yet, what is wonderwww.vitalitymagazine.com
ful is that whatever we do that is different than what we did before will make a change. Sometimes these changes are subtle and sometimes dramatic. Those of us who are serious about inner housecleaning will see the benefit of seeking help of one kind or another along our journey.
Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy as Powerful Tools At some point in our journey, psychotherapy combined with hypnotherapy can be quite powerful. For example, many of those who have successfully lost weight can report that they still have all the same ‘fat’ feelings inside – those feelings didn’t go away with the weight. I was much like this at age 17. I had incorporated many wonderful changes in diet and exercise, but didn’t have the awareness yet that I really needed to go deeply into the basement as well as all over the house and do a thorough cleaning. Like the person who loses weight and is still unhappy, I had a partial shift but not a deeper shift in the overall flow and feeling inside the house. How do we clean house with hypnotherapy and psychotherapy? By turning our awareness and attention inward. If you have ever taken a yoga class and experienced the “savasana” posture (where one lies down and totally relaxes the mind and body), or meditation, you can appreciate the value of spending time during the day consciously relaxing mind and body. When a part of our consciousness becomes the “watcher” of our thoughts www.vitalitymagazine.com
and emotions, we turn a part of the mind inward. Now there is the possibility of change and transformation. We realize that our basement is quite disorganized, and we haven’t checked the fridge inventory in twenty years. There is some mouldy cheese that needs to be discarded. If we are always looking “out there” for happiness or a shift in our life, we may never get it. The shift happens in our inner world first and then moves outwardly. Ways to turn awareness and attention inward and develop the inner ‘witness’ are endless – yoga, meditation, or simply just sitting in our own backyard quietly listening to the sounds of a bird while noticing our own thoughts. With practice we begin to shine the flashlight of conscious awareness into the recesses of our being. When a client is ready and if hypnotherapy work is called for in their process of healing, I lead them into a relaxed state using guided visualization. Sometimes, I have them imagine they are going on an “inner vacation” somewhere that is just perfect for them. Already, their consciousness is turning inward in a pleasant and relaxing way. A busy mind that was preoccupied with worries and concerns is guided to be in the present moment (the only place healing occurs) and now we can move towards taking a look at what needs to be sorted. Awareness is now placed inside the house. For some individuals this is easy – sometimes so easy that it is my job to “put on the breaks” so they don’t uncover too much dust and VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2021

junk too quickly and become overwhelmed. For others, it takes longer to open those inner tracks because they have become so accustomed to being run by the busy-ness of the mind and the almost total focus on outer forms. Some individuals are afraid to open the door to the basement, afraid of what they will find, afraid of change – this is normal! However, as a client progresses, they begin to realize the great value of opening the basement door and taking a look – they also realize that it is not really so scary after all! In fact, sometimes it is filled with wonder! Clients start to learn how to keep what is working in their lives and let the rest go. They process and release old energy and increase and expand what was already there and already fantastic that they didn’t know about. Along with bags of garbage to be disposed of, they also discover treasures in the house.
Creating a New Life for Ourselves Pretty soon, with commitment and perseverance, we begin to create a different life for ourselves. The subconscious mind, having previously run the show without any awareness, starts to become conscious. We can make healthier choices and see more clearly. We have opened the windows and let light and fresh air into the house. Light begins to stream into all the rooms that were shut and dark. We begin to realize that happiness is our birthright and we gain tools to access that innate happiness. We begin to realize that the happiness we seek is not dependent on what happens “out there.” Rather we are embod36

iments of happiness for no reason. Our house has become a unified whole and all the rooms are inviting. To keep the house clean is a daily practice. Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy help to clean up the house and do a great deal to clean up the basement. Having a regular practice of meditation and/or yoga also keeps the house clean. Throughout our lives, as a form of regular inner maintenance, it is great if we can become more “meditative” and make meditation or yoga a daily practice. Peppered with times where we will dive into hypnotherapy or psychotherapy or some combination of the two, we can really start to feel a lightness coming into our being. By committing to oneself, to “cleaning the house” and becoming more conscious – we do a great service to ourselves and all of humanity. By choosing a life of happiness for no reason and refusing to accept that life is all about suffering, we help to uplift others and create a pathway for others to awaken too! Find your path of healing and transformation and create the life of your dreams. You can do it. Laurie Weinberg, RP is a Gestalt psychotherapist with a private practice in Toronto. JUNE 2021 Sun Sign Predictions ★★★ by Julie Simmons ★★★ General Overview: This is a month to be playful, patient, and practical. We are reminded that although we are responsible for this world, the best response is to be present to what is – even as it changes right before our eyes. Magic is afoot – how that magic shows itself depends on us. New Moon: June 10. Full Moon: June 24. (Ed. note: To see the predictions for each sign in July and August, visit the extended version of this column posted at: https://vitalitymagazine.com/astrology/julie-simmons/ ) ARIES: March 20 - April 19
There are times when nothing makes sense. What else can you make if not sense? Let your New Moon intention be to make something other than sense out of the noise swirling around you. At the Full Moon let go of your aspirations and observe the people and situations that depend on you and your inclination to show up – or not. TAURUS: April 20 - May 20
Our desires change through time, just as we do. There is no stopping this. Let your New Moon intention be an exploration of your wants, desires, and values. No expectations. Only observations. At the Full Moon seek teachings, teachers, or an inner muse to learn more about desire in a changed world. GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
Memory is a sacred storehouse of great riches. Allow remembrances to surface at the New Moon and feed your earnest intention to be the truest version of yourself possible. By the Full Moon the past has flown. Time to add new memories to the storehouse. Focus on pleasures which might sustain you once winter comes again. CANCER: June 21 - July 21
Interesting times require that we investigate difficult issues. The New Moon asks you to focus on topics of greatest interest. If focus is out of reach, simply observing the river of thoughts flowing through your mind will teach you plenty. By the Full Moon your life and the people you relate to come into sharper focus.

LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22
The New Moon follows a time of mental agitation, pulling you away from creativity. A resolution to unplug and discover the living world around you would be a great help. The Full Moon exposes the inner world of your imagination. Make something from these images. VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21
This is your planet. You live here. Don’t succumb to despair. Set your mind to focus on the real and the true which you experience when brushing your teeth, preparing a meal, or just living your life. When the Full Moon arrives be ready to dance beneath the diamond sky. Celebrate life just because you can. Your way. LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22
Better to be a seeker than a pundit at the New Moon. Let your intention be to open to all that you don’t know, to the mystery of learning new things even if they are old wisdoms. By the Full Moon you may have met some new folks and you may find people looking to you for the kind of wisdom that comes from experience. SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
One of life’s greatest magic tricks teaches us that every ending is a new beginning. You don’t need to believe. It just is. This could be the underlying inspiration for your New Moon intention. At the Full Moon celebrate the journey you have undertaken in this life. Be guided by wisdom, not confirmation bias. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20
The notion of an ideal partner who totally ‘gets’ you might be unrealistic. This New Moon asks you to listen exactly the way you would like to be heard, or surrender to confusion and disappointment. By the Full Moon it’s easier to enjoy the bounty of someone you love and trust who ‘gets’ you and appreciates how you listened. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19

Time is a relative value. We move through it and it moves through us. Get metaphysical at the New Moon. Aim to learn something new rather than claim mastery over it. There are people in your life who reflect you as if they were mirrors. Don’t blame the mirror at the Full moon for what you see in it. www.vitalitymagazine.com

Summer 2021 Sun Sign Predictions ~ continued ~
AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17
So many things we thought we knew about love seem different. Actually love is constant, we have changed. What seed of love might you plant at the New Moon? By the Full Moon you are challenged in your daily life: On the job or possibly health and well-being. Act on behalf of yourself even as you consider the greater good. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19
The New Moon begs the question of where you come from, what roots you to life. Don’t overthink it. Better to stand right where you are and know it as if for the first time, as your home. The full moon reveals so much in the way of possibilities. It’s not anything that is possible, it’s something, something real and specific. Zodiac Predictions for June 2021 by Robin Armstrong TAURUS (April 20: to May 21) This month starts out well for most Taureans but difficulties will start to accumulate after June 12 when Mars enters Leo. This pulls you into argumentative situations and makes you vulnerable to accidents or mechanical delays. The best solution for you is to keep well rested and slow down. CANCER (June 21 to July 23) The Force will continue to be with Cancers for the first 11 days of June. Make the most of this time. If there is something that you want to do, do it! Don’t hesitate! The more you get done in the beginning of the month, the more you will be able to relax and enjoy yourself in the last half. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 22) Your ability to charm and attract what or who you want will be highlighted this month. But if you have to force issues then they will not work out so well. It will be as if you are walking on thin ice. Be careful that you do not get pulled into more than you are ready for. Smile and be patient. The above is an excerpt from Robin’s June predictions posted at https://vitalitymagazine.com/astrology/robin-armstrong/ For a personal consultation with Robin Armstrong, or to inquire about his School of Astrology, email Robin at info@iastro.com or phone (416) 557-2331, or visit his website at www.iastro.com www.vitalitymagazine.com

Where Passion Becomes Art
CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF SYMBOLIC PRIDE
n March 26, 1921, the fishing and racing schooner Bluenose launched off the coast of Nova Scotia under the captaincy of Angus Walters.
