OPINION

Woodford Files Welcome to our first issue of 2020! What a wild year it’s been so far. With the coronavirus wreaking havoc around the world, one would expect health authorities to be educating citizens on how to protect themselves. But so far, I have seen no such guidance from the medical establishment, other than urging us to wash our hands and use sanitizers. And if we do get the virus, there are no medical treatments. So we’re on our own. Thankfully, Mother Nature has plenty of potent weapons to help fend off infectious microbes, and this month we’ve brought together some of our best health experts to advise on surviving a pandemic by strengthening immune defences. This is information you will not find through Google searches or Facebook posts, because both are actively censoring out the top research on natural health and alternative medicine these days. So the only way to get honest news about how to properly take your health into your own hands is to pick up Vitality magazine at your local health food store, or subscribe to the digital edition so it lands in your in-box. Returning this month with an article on Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment, Dr. Zoltan Rona, MD describes his favourite top 10 ways to arm the immune system. Here we find the latest research on vitamins C and D, plus probiotics, spices, and minerals that can turn the body into a healthy organism that is hostile to invading armies of viruses and bacteria. With nature’s pharmacy under our belts, I think

we stand a much better chance of surviving when COVID-19 comes to town. Also on deck is herbalist Rick DeSylva, who has years of clinical experience using botanical medicine for both preventing and treating infectious organisms. In his article on Immune Boosting Herbs we learn about elecampane, lomatium, and olive leaf as antiviral agents. These are easily found in local stores, or you can get a customized herbal protocol directly from him. We also have a feature by Helke Ferrie on the power of the human microbiome to cure us or kill us. And there’s a centuries-old TCM folklore recipe from Chinese Medicine expert Tom Fung for preventing and treating infectious diseases. Indeed, we are fortunate to be surrounded by so much knowledge and experience, which empowers us to take positive steps towards dealing with whatever germs come our way. And it’s not just about what we do to get well, it’s also about what we stop doing. That is, stop using products that increase your toxic load and stress your immune system. These include chemical laundry detergents, toxic air fresheners, poisonous sugar, refined carbohydrates, and bad fats. Instead, switch to nontoxic, eco-friendly cleaners and sanitizers made from essential oils (see p. 42), and eat nutrient-dense whole foods. You can find an extended version of this column posted online at https:// tinyurl.com/Woodford-Spring2020 where there’s a surprise announcement about a lawsuit just launched by Dr. Zoltan Rona. The Microbiome and the New Medical Paradigm

In other words, Finlay is suggesting that you may be able to “catch” obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, cardiovascular disease, cancer and more from those you live with, those you exchange body fluids with, and/or those you kiss. And it’s not about living in the same daily biochemical soup with others and sharing the same food and BY HELKE FERRIE possibly bad habits. We are looking at these noncommunicable diseases as having the ability to behave like infectious diseases. The implications are staggering. And the shock waves rolling over conventional medicine seem to keep coming. Standard medicine’s magic bullets have proven mostly to be more bullets than magic – their side effects have often proved to be worse than the disease (especially with chronic noncommunicable diseases for which the prescribed drugs usually cause other diseases and quite a terrible death toll). Standard drugs also destroy the microbiome in our guts. Nutritional Medicine Has the Best Tools

Environmental and nutritional medicine came along some fifty years ago and set the stage for these astounding, observations of the microbiome. The environmental / nutritional approach dealt very successfully with chronic illnesses, basing its approach on mindfulness in eating and living. Science discovered essential nutrients never dreamed of before, behaving in ways never guessed. Nutritional approaches to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory illnesses – combined with lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating organic whole foods, identifying toxins in the environment to avoid and remove – have performed something closer to magic than any bullet ever did (except perhaps penicillin in its golden age before we wrecked its efficacy for profit in animal husbandry). Yet, that stage of claiming personal authority by turning to socalled alternative medicine was just the start. Now we know that taking responsibility means primarily protecting or restoring our microbiome. To gain a perspective of these upheavals in understanding, remember it is only recently, 1907 in fact, that Axel Holst and Alfred Froehlich suspected the existence of what we now call vitamin C. The word “vitamin” was only coined in 1912 by biochemist Casimir Funk. It was just in 1930 that the Hungarian biochemist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi actually discovered what Holst and Froehlich guessed at, for which he received the 1934 Nobel Prize. Today we know that without vitamin C we have no functioning immune system and no biological development or repair mechanisms. Vitamin C is the conductor of the whole biochemical orchestra. Right now, in fact, it is being used as an intravenous treatment in China for the most seriously ill patients infected with the COVID-19 virus.[3] Back in 1988, scientists Linda R. Hegstrand and Roberta J. Hine, building on the work of Rene Dubos in the 1960s, proved the existence of the gut-brain axis and showed that gut microbes influence brain chemistry. That work formed the basis of the explosion of research into the microbiome starting around 2000. Nutrition and health research dominates biochemistry in medicine and has shown how vitamin C enables the microbiome to function. The microbiome’s existence, now described as a newly discovered organ, makes all the difference between us and a banana, as we both have the same number of genes (about 25,000). The banana does not have a microbiome of 100 trillion bacteria, viruses, and fungi causing our complex systems to function, not like a banana, but like us, by instructing the genes to behave properly our way. Disturbances in the microbiome are the primary cause of disease – be it by infection or what was once known as “idiopathic”, that is to say: chronic, or what was called non-communicable diseases (NCD). 8

In his book The Whole Body Microbiome, Brett Finlay describes several areas of disease which are affected by the gut microbiome, pointing out that the part of the microbiome in teeth, on the tongue, and on skin have not been as yet thoroughly explored, but are now being studied intensely. To whit: Obesity is a leading risk factor for many noncommunicable diseases and has an important microbial element. Germfree mice become obese when receiving a fecal transplant from obese mice. A study conducted lasting 30 years involved “a social network club of 12,067 people and showed that having an obese friend was associated with a 57% higher chance of obesity… and a study of U.S. military families showed that being stationed in a country with high obesity rates was associated with an increased body mass index, whereas those families stationed in countries with lower obesity rates had a lower body mass index.” The observation was that the total picture included environment, diet, lifestyle and microbiota. Since obesity carries the highest risk for Type 2 diabetes, that risk of making it a communicable disease comes through the microbiota. Hence, spouses get Type 2 diabetes often after one of them develops it. In mice, this phenomenon has been experimentally proven. Inflammatory bowel diseases have been shown to have characteristic dysbiotic microbiota which can be transferred from person to person or mouse to mouse. “Spouses of such patients also have similar microbiota and much higher rates of disease than accountable by chance alone.” India has a very low rate of ulcerative colitis, but when Indians move to North America, Canada, or the UK the migrants develop the disease at high rates. These findings also apply to cardiovascular disease such as stroke and heart attack. It is also known that “transmissible microbiota, especially early in life, may have a protective role against NCDs, including asthma, allergies, and obesity.” Finlay’s book, Let Them Eat Dirt, is a practical guide on that.

Gene Tinkering and Symptom Control – No Longer Valid Approaches to Health Care

In his Science article, Finlay outlined a simple and easily understandable plan for testing these new observations by following the approach of the so-called Koch’s Principles developed in 1890. They constitute the gold standard for research in infectious disease. The details are described in his article.[1] This requires a huge adjustment in understanding. Simplistic hopes for finding one-to-one relationships 10

between a gene and a disease have been dashed because it turns out that genes do not create chronic disease. At the same time, Big Pharma’s dreams for yet another obscenely profitable symptom-controlling drug are evaporating, unless they now start protecting the microbiome, instead of destroying it with toxic chemicals innately foreign to our biology. Tweaking genes, which themselves are totally dependent on resident microbes telling them how to function, has also become a pipe dream. While disease causation has many components, the healthy microbiome is so important that it makes relatives of us all on planet earth. The glory of our microbeorchestrated chaos has revealed itself, and now we must understand how it has been in control all along. We better listen up because those bugs know something. So understanding and welcoming them makes the difference between health and disease and life and death. Don’t mess with them. In other words, try not to take drugs without figuring out first if they may be harmful to your microbio-

Bites • Salads • Dressings Bitter Bites: One of the easiest ways to keep bitter spring greens for later use is to parboil them (coarsely chop and drop into boiling water for one to two minutes; drain well), cool, and then freeze in 2- or 4-cup amounts. Frozen greens can be used with chicken broth for soups, and added to pasta sauces, stews, and casseroles. Sour Salads: Adding apple, apricot, raisins, or other sweet flavours actually defeats the role of the bitter component in the diet. You are better to start training your palate with small doses of bitters, and work up to full size servings once you have come to fully appreciate the clean, astringent essence of bitter greens. Dour Dressings: The role of dressing here is not to sweeten or disguise the bitterness of the greens, but to moisten and lend a slight acidic note to the otherwise sharp and pungent leaves. Vinaigrette – a blend of oil and acid – is the very best dressing for salads made with bitter greens. Fresh pressed virgin olive oil is fine, but the lighter vegetable oils like safflower, grape seed, hemp or sesame seed can be mixed with it for a better blend. Freshly pressed lemon, lime, or grapefruit juice, good quality herb or wine vinegars, and even dry, fruity wines offer a tasty shot of the acid needed for a great vinaigrette. Use 1 tablespoon oil and 1 teaspoon acid for every serving (2 cups) of greens. Mix the dressing right in the bowl

Immune Boosting Herbs by RichaRd dEsylva, Rh, dnm

By the time you read this, the issue of the coronavirus will have either died out, or it will have grown into a pandemic wreaking havoc in countries around the world. I hope that it never becomes as deadly as the Spanish ’Flu of 1919. That was when 25% to 30% of the world’s population became infected, and up to 40 million died.[1] What made the One of the most powSpanish ’Flu so deadly was that it started out as an H1N1 erful immune boosting and antiviral herbs is virus in 1900, but then comElecampane Root bined with an avian bird flu (Inula helenium) (H5N1) around 1918. This new combination of genetic material is what made the virus so deadly, as humans had previously only been exposed to H1N1 on its own.[2] I mention this in the context of the most recent coronavirus, known as COVID-19. Some research indicates that the genome (genetic material) of the coronavirus is 96% identical with that of bats.[3] Thus the preliminary explanation of its origin lends credence to the meat market scenario in Wuhan that has live animals, including bats and snakes, for sale. It remains to be seen, but this cross-species transmission may well turn out to be the cause of its yet to be proven deadliness. According to Dr Chris Martenson, PhD, and other experts, the transmissibility of this virus is asymptomatic – it can be transmitted from one to another even though the original carrier isn’t showing symptoms of fever, chills, aches, etc. [4] Due to this apparent lack of symptoms in the early stages, the result has been a fairly rapid spread of coronavirus throughout countries in Asia, Europe, and North America. Given the details noted above, it would be prudent to prepare oneself for any possible eventuality by strengthening the immune system. Since I am a trained herbalist, my thoughts immediately turn to herbs for their immune strengthening power. While most people would tend to think of Echinacea, I believe that in this situation our attention needs to focus on herbs that are both immune boosters as well as antiviral agents. Furthermore, it is important to understand the connection between viruses and fungi. 20

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2019

Many years ago, Ron Gdanski, a brilliant researcher and author of Cancer: Cause, Cure, and Cover-up, said that in his opinion a virus was actually the male spore of a fungi. When comparing the shape (morphology) and design of both, he noted striking similarities. This is remarkable since many herbs that are antiviral are also antifungal.[5] And to complete the picture, it is my professional opinion that over 70% of people today have Candida albicans – the end stage of which is a fungus. So it would not be unexpected to see how a virus could take hold – especially one that has mutated from a form that humans are adapted to, into one that is new and potentially deadly. For this reason, I recommend one of the most powerful immune boosters and antiviral herbs – Elecampane Root (Inula helenium).[6] Its compounds (alantolactones) have the ability to strengthen immunity and offer significant antiviral activity. However, for those who suffer from allergies to ragweed, daisy, marigold, and other members of the asteraceae and compositae family, it would be best to avoid using Elecampane as it may cause an allergic reaction. In my herbal practice, I originally used Osha Root (Ligusticum porteri) as a strong antiviral agent, along with Elecampane Root. However, Osha has been largely over-harvested so I now use Lomatium root (Lomatium dissectum) instead, which has a strong antiviral effect as well.[7] Further, I highly recommend Olive Leaf tincture because its oleuropein compound has antiviral, antibacterial, and

immune building effects.[8] While these herbs are excellent remedies, there are others worth considering for their specific immune building properties. Red Root (Ceanothus americana) is an excellent agent to stimulate the spleen and lymphatics, both of I highly recommend which are also involved in immune Olive Leaf tincture function.[9] Finally, Astragalus because its oleu(Astragalus membranaceous) will ropein compound stimulate the production of natural- has antiviral, antibacterial, and immune ly occurring interferon – a subbuilding effects stance that has demonstrated antiviral activity. [10] Typical dosages for an alcohol extract of any of these herbs would be in the range of one-half to 1 teaspoonful, 2 to 3 times per day. Keep in mind that the dosages for the above noted herbs will vary according to the condition, age, height and weight of the individual. For this reason I strongly recommend that readers consult with a knowledgeable herbalist or other natural health care practitioner who is skilled in the understanding and use of these herbs. Prevention in the face of a possible pandemic is prudent; and so is knowing how to use natural medicine. References [1] Taubenberger JK. Boosting Immune Function with Probiotics by Michael Vertolli When clients ask me what they can do to avoid respiratory infections during the winter and spring months, they are surprised that the first thing I recommend is a good probiotic supplement. The health of our microbiome, digestive system, and immune system are interconnected. Therefore, one important way to boost our immune function and prevent infection is to eat a good diet, make sure our digestive system is functioning well, and support the health of our microbiome. It is important to add probiotics to water in powder form and swish each mouthful around in the mouth for a bit before swallowing. This will ensure that some of the culture gets into the mouth and throat, a key step because the mouth and throat are the primary entry point into the body for most pathogenic organisms. We need to have a healthy microbiome in this area to prevent pathogens from taking hold. It is not necessary to buy probiotics in powder form. They actually keep better in capsules. Simply open up the capsule and pour the contents into a glass of water. (Ed. note: The above article is excerpted from a longer article by Michael Vertolli. Coronavirus Prevention and Treatment Top 10 Ways to Arm Your Immune System Against Viral Epidemics BY DR. ZOLTAN P. RONA, MD, MSc.

T

he Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in January has caused worldwide fear, panic, and confusion. Fueled by nonstop media accounts of infection and death rates, quarantines of entire cities, and misleading propaganda to “get your ’flu shots” as a way of fighting the outbreak, the hysteria is building with each passing day. People are walking around wearing useless surgical face masks as if this offers some degree of protection. It does not, but could be of some value in preventing cameras from discovering your identity. Viruses are too small to be prevented from spreading by the surgical face masks that many folks are using. Medical authorities are urging us daily to wash our hands repeatedly to reduce the spread of viruses. Similar to the SARS epidemic of more than a decade ago, antibacterial soaps can be found in hospitals, doctor’s offices, banks, tennis clubs, gyms, grocery stores, and elsewhere. But they are toxic. I recommend that you avoid using these. Such products are quite toxic to the skin and put an added strain on the immune system. Antibacterial soaps contain triclosan and triclocarban, two ingredients recently exposed by the U.S. FDA as being neither safe or effective infection preventers. While it is wise to keep your hands clean, it’s best to use natural soaps, tea tree oil cleansers, or those containing neem, aloe, or oregano oil. And avoid people who are sick with the ’flu or other viral illnesses. Other than endorsing handwashing and the ‘flu vaccine, medical authorities have made no attempt to inform the public about safe and effective natural measures to both prevent and treat viral infections. From a dietary perspective, sugar, allergenic foods, and stress can feed microbes and spread disease. Instead, try to follow a high protein, sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free organic diet with copious amounts of raw vegetables. In 24

addition, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Here are my top 10 supplement recommendations. VITAMIN D – Vitamin D deficiency is likely responsible for the high incidence of colds and ’flus during winter in Canada. By nature, vitamin D is anti-inflammatory. Deficiency causes immune system weakness and chronic inflammation. For prevention, supplementing with 5,000 – 10,000 IU daily from October to May of each year is safe for most adults. It is effective for prevention of ’flus, colds, cancer, and approximately 200 different diseases. Humans manufacture their own antibiotic through vitamin D stimulation. Vitamin D promotes production of cathelicidin, a protein with antibiotic properties. Cathelicidin kills viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. The more vitamin D in the system, the more the body makes this antibiotic. For those unfortunate enough to get the ’flu or any viral illness, Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council recommends taking 50,000 IU daily of vitamin D at the first sign of the ’flu for 5 days, then dropping the level down to 5 10,000 IU daily for the winter season. This strategy can also be employed if you get the ’flu or a cold right after receiving the ’flu shot. (Most conventional doctors do not believe that you can get the ’flu after a ’flu shot. Then again, they continue to ignore the overwhelming evidence that vitamin D prevents infection.) In any event, vitamin D is great prevention and effective treatment for colds, ’flus, and probably

doses much higher than the RDA. Dr. David Brownstein, author of a book on therapeutic uses of iodine, recommends 25 mg daily for prevention and 50 – 100 mg daily at the first sign of illness. You will need a prescription for these higher doses but you can easily get iodine from fish, seafood, kelp, dulse, and other seaweed options. Kelp, sea salt, or dulse powder can be sprinkled on food for There is a growing added iodine. many other infections. World authorities on vitamin D verify that up to 30,000 IU daily for a healthy adult is quite safe and that periodic higher doses (50,000 IU daily for 5 days) are also of no concern. Vitamin D works even better if taken with vitamin K2. Both are anti-inflammatory and can prevent as well as treat infections successfully.

VITAMIN A – is often deficient in the Canadian population, especially in people with problems absorbing fat soluble vitamins use of vitamin C in from food. Vitamin A is not only vital for very high doses to VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID) – healthy vision but also important as a viral illboth prevent and 1,000 mg or more daily has antiviral and ness preventive. Dr. David Brownstein recomtreat infections immune enhancing effects. One of my patients receiving high dose intravenous vitamin C for a viral IODINE – is a tremendously important mineral for illness was recently loudly scolded by her infectious disease optimal immune system functioning. Most people specialist for receiving it. I asked the patient to ask that docknow iodine is important for thyroid function but few know tor to give me a call but the doctor never tried to do so. (I find that there is no bacteria, virus, fungus or parasite known to be the ignorance and arrogance of some conventional doctors resistant to iodine. To have an antiviral effect, one must take very disturbing.) The scientific support of this use of vitamin

C is well documented, and only the uninformed and out-ofdate doctors believe it to be otherwise. “I have not seen any ’flu yet that was not cured or markedly ameliorated by massive doses of vitamin C.” Robert F. Cathcart, MD The daily requirement of vitamin C is still in debate but most would agree that the RDA of 60 mg is too low an estimate of actual human need. Vitamin C is used up quickly during conditions of stress, allergies, diseases like diabetes, and by tobacco smoke, drugs, antibiotics, alcohol, mercury, and other toxic heavy metals like lead and cadmium. Some vitamin C is stored in the adrenal glands, pituitary, brain, eyes, ovaries, and testes and is in greater demand whenever the immune system or any connective tissue is stressed. The best food sources of vitamin C are the citrus fruits. Other fruits with high amounts of C include rosehips, acerola cherries, papayas, cantaloupes, and strawberries. The best vegetable sources are red and green peppers, garlic, onions, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, tomatoes, asparagus, parsley, dark leafy greens, cabbage, and sauerkraut. Vitamin C was first isolated from lemons in 1932 but it was well known to be a factor in the prevention of scurvy back in the 18th century. Vitamin C is used by the body in the formation of collagen, a protein required by all joints, ligaments, skin, cartilage, capillary walls, bones, teeth and con-

nective tissue. Vitamin C is needed to help heal wounds and to maintain healthy blood vessels. Vitamin C may well be the most controversial of all the vitamins. Most of the medical establishment still objects to the use of megadoses of vitamin C for treatment of cancer, the ’flu, allergies, stress, adrenal fatigue, or just about anything else. Yet there is a growing body of medical literature supporting the use of vitamin C in very high doses to both prevent and treat infections. So in my opinion, if you have any serious viral illness like coronavirus, insist on high doses of IV vitamin C. It can save your life. Vitamin C in larger than physiological doses have been successfully used to treat a range of viral, bacterial, fungal and inflammatory conditions including colds, ‘flus, mononucleosis, herpes simplex infections, and shingles. Vitamin C boosts production of interferon, a potent anti-viral and immune enhancing substance. Chronic inflammatory conditions not necessarily related to infectious disease will also respond to vitamin C therapy. These include arthritis, bursitis, gout (vitamin C pushes uric acid out of the body), asthma, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. One of the strategies that I have recommended for people who have just acquired an infection is: “take vitamin C to bowel tolerance.” When someone is plagued with a viral infection, the tolerance for high doses of vitamin C is increased. It takes far higher doses of vitamin C to produce loose bowel movements which occur at the vitamin C tolerance dose. Pushing vitamin C to that level will produce a strong antiviral and antihistaminic effect, reducing all the signs and symptoms of the common cold and the ’flu. Doses of 20,000 mg or more might be required to reach that bowel tolerance level when, ordinarily in times of good health, the bowel tolerance dose might just be 3,000 mg daily. In other words, the sicker you are, the higher the dose required.

5

PROBIOTICS (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and numerous others) – are friendly bacteria that usually inhabit the gut, the oral cavity, and the skin. They are very well documented optimizers of the immune system. Probiotics function as natural antibiotics against unfriendly bacteria, viruses like the ’flu and cold virus, as well as yeast

28

like Candida albicans. Probiotics can also be used for both prevention and treatment. Cultured dairy products like raw non-pasteurized cheese, yogurt, acidophilus milk, buttermilk, sour cream, cottage cheese, and kefir are well-known sources of friendly bacteria. Equally effective probiotic sources include cultured/fermented vegetables (cabbage, turnips, eggplant, cucumbers (pickles), onions, squash, olives and carrots), soy products like organic tempeh and miso, kombucha, natto, and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Other food sources are sauerkraut and sourdough breads. Ideally, one can get a good supply of probiotics from one or more of these diverse foodstuffs. If dietary sources are not easily available, supplemental probiotic powders and capsules are good alternatives. Choose a brand that has at least 10 different strains of friendly bacteria and between 10 – 15 billion live organisms.

6

COLOSTRUM – is the first mammary secretion nourishment that any mammal, including humans, provides for its newborn during the first 24 to 48 hours of life. Bovine colostrum is available at most health food stores as a natural health product. Those wanting to prevent infections can take between 3 and 6 capsules daily. Polio vaccine developer, Dr. Albert Sabin, discovered that colostrum contained antibodies against polio and recommended it for children susceptible to catching the disease.

Colostrum components include interferon, gamma globulin, growth hormone (GH), IgF-1 and protease inhibitors used by medical specialists in the treatment of cancer, chronic viral infections including HIV, and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Jeffrey Dach is one doctor who provides evidence in a recent publication that colostrum is three times more effective at preventing the ’flu than the ’flu shot.

7

OIL OF OREGANO – 2 to 4 drops, 3 times daily, is an effective natural antibiotic for numerous infectious diseases, including those that are proven to be resistant to prescription antibiotics. Oregano oil contains carvacrol, a phenol shown to stop the growth of multiple bacteria. It also contains thymol (a natural antifungal) and rosmarinic acid (a powerful antioxidant). Side effects are rarely, if ever, seen and the spicy taste can be offset by mixing it with olive oil, foods, or beverages. For sinus and nasal infections, one can inhale vapours from a bottle of oregano oil several times daily to reduce or eliminate symptoms. If using high doses of oregano, make sure to take it at least two hours away from probiotic supplements.

8

BLACK SEED OIL – It is often said that black seed oil will cure anything except death. Its best use would be for viral infection complications such as pneumonias when combined with intravenous vitamin C infusions. Black seed oil comes from the medicinal plant Nigella sativa (N. sativa) which has been used in various traditional systems of medicine like Unani and Tibb, Ayurveda, and Siddha. The list of diseases or health conditions that it is purported to help run into the hundreds. Most of the benefits have yet to be proven by clinical trials. Nonetheless, a great deal of scientific studies have been published supporting the use of black seed oil as a natural antibiotic. It has been widely used as an antihypertensive, liver tonic, diuretic, digestive, anti-diarrheal, appetite stimulant, analgesic, anti-bacterial, and for skin disorders. Extensive studies on N. sativa have been carried out by various researchers and a wide spectrum of its pharmacological actions have been explored which may include antidiabetic, anticancer, immunomodulator, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, bronchodilator, hepato-protective, renal ORGANIC LIQUID TOOTHP PASTE protective, gastro-protective, antioxidant properties, etc. Our mission is to eliminate den ntal issues natura ally and safely, by replacing toothpaste with premium pure essential e oils that have been used d historically Asthma is one of the many to prev vent dental disease, gingivitis, bleeding gums a chronic conditions that often No pre eservatives or fluoride, an nd SLS free. 10 responds well to black seed oil. 0 IngNatu % red ral Brushing twice daily with bodyF y ood dentalTM will help ien Most of the therapeutic properts • Prevent tarter • Prevent e inflammation ties of this plant are due to the and plaque build up • Stren ngthen enamel presence of thymoquinone • Re educe gum bleeding • Whiten e teeth and pocke ets • Fresh hen breath which is the major bioactive • Produce more saliva component of the essential oil. ver since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in China a few months ago, my patients have been asking me how to protect themselves from infection. Or what treatment to use if they should become infected. This type of virus usually invades the body through the mouth and nose. So far, health authorities My favourite vinegar are finding that some people can and garlic folklore get infected and recover quickly, medicine can be used while others with weak immunity can be seriously debilitated or for infectious disease prevention and even even die from the infection. treatment Prevention: If a viral epidemic spreads to the region where you live, there are a few preventive steps you can take: – Wear a mouthguard in public. – Go to bed early and sleep well; reduce stress in your life as much as possible to boost your immune system. – If you drink tap water, make sure it is boiled first. Or drink bottled water. – Eat raw garlic. Do not cook it because two of its active constituents, which can kill viruses, are allicin and ajoene; these are very unstable and can be damaged by heat. Take it three times per day after meals. Or try my favourite recipe for garlic medicine: This recipe combines vinegar and garlic. It is practical, time-saving, and based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concepts. It can be used for infectious disease prevention and treatment. The recipe ingredients are vinegar (50%) and garlic (50%); the proportions are five heads of garlic to a one litre bottle of vinegar. However, the recipe can be cut in half or more for smaller portions, as long as the correct ratios are maintained. Selection of Materials and Process Garlic – The best garlic is the organic type with purple skin. Vinegar – Use organic, unpasteurized, apple cider vinegar from the health food store, or rice vinegar from an Asian grocery store. The best Chinese vinegar is called Chinkiang Vinegar, made by Gold Plum, which won a gold medal in 1985 in France. 1. Peel off the garlic skin and crack the garlic. www.vitalitymagazine.com

2. In a large glass bowl, add the garlic to the vinegar, mix it up, and then pour the concoction into glass jars. Store it in a dark place for at least two weeks. Then it is ready to use. If you keep this tonic in a cool place in a well-sealed jar, usually it is good for 20 years or longer, especially if it contains the dark Chinese rice vinegar. Take out the garlic after soaking it for one month, and bring the tonic with you when travelling to places with a lot of contagious diseases. Health Benefits – Prevention & Treatment: • MAINTENANCE – Take one teaspoon of garlic/vinegar tonic after each meal. You may mix it with salad or put it into food, such as noodles, but do not cook it at a high temperature because this would destroy the garlic’s medicine. • COMMON COLD AND COUGH – Mix 2 tablespoons with warm water and drink on an empty stomach, 3 times daily. Repeat until the cold and cough are gone. Make sure to get enough rest and keep warm. • VIRAL HEPATITIS – Take a half cup of the juice after each meal until the condition improves. Then cut down to the maintenance dosage of 1 teaspoon after each meal. In case of fatigue syndrome, you may add 1 teaspoon of honey until symptoms improve. Get plenty of rest during the recovering period. • PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS – Take a half cup of the juice after each meal until the condition improves, and add intake of fresh crushed garlic, 3 to 5 cloves, after each meal. Chew it and swallow with warm water. • INTESTINAL PARASITES – Use tonic the same as for Pulmonary Tuberculosis, until the condition clears. • BACILLARY DYSENTERY – Use tonic the same as for Pulmonary Tuberculosis. • COVID-19 AND ’FLU VIRUSES – Mix 2 tablespoons with warm water and drink on an empty stomach, 3 times daily. Repeat until the infection clears. Make sure to get enough rest and keep warm. I also recommend that my patients drink lots of green tea due to its high catechin content, including EGCG and EGC, which has been found to prevent infections.[1] Reference: [1] https://www.hindawi. com/ journals/bmri/2018/9105261/

s a tool in the battle against harmful germs and rampant bacteria and viruses, Thieves® products provide a full-spectrum “overwhelming force” to eradicate pathogens without harsh chemicals. Thieves® oil blend is formulated with antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious essential oils. The blend The Thieves® was created based on research sanitizer, recently concerning a group of 15thintroduced to the century thieves in France durCanadian maring the Great Plague, who ketplace, kills illness-causing managed to protect themselves germs and while robbing victims by rubbacteria bing cloves, rosemary, and other aromatic oils over their bodies. The Thieves® formula is a Young Living proprietary blend that was university-tested at Weber State University and found to be effective in destroying over 99.96% of bacteria it came into contact with. Other studies showed that essential oils of cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, geranium, and thyme were equal or superior to the powerful anti-fungal drug, Hexaconzasole. Clove essential oil, with its primary constituent eugenol, was found to destroy more than 60 types of bacteria, 15 strains of fungi, and several viruses. “Essential oils of spices and herbs (thyme, oregano, mint, cinnamon, sage, and clove) were found to possess the strongest antimicrobial properties among the many tested.” (D. Kalemba; A. Kunika. Current Medicinal Chemistry. Vol. 10, No. 10. abstract).

The improved Thieves® Clean and Green formula includes essential oils of: CLOVE (Syzygium aromaticum) – destroys mould, fungus, and influenza. Clove is the highest-scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on the ORAC scale, with a score of over 10,000,000. LEMON (Citrus limon) – has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that amplify immunity. It is antifungal and anti-bacterial. CINNAMON BARK (Cinnamomum verum) – destroys MRSA, staphylococcus, fungi, and other bacteria. EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus radiata) is a relatively gentle and non-irritating variety that is highly anti-microbial. News Update – A pair of orthopedic surgeons have recently reported that two essential oils (eucalyptus and tea tree oil) are effective at treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. The researchers presented their findings at the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Eugene Sherry, of the University of Sydney, said that an antibacterial wash derived from Eucalyptus radiata and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea-tree oil), when applied to infected wounds, can work where modern antibiotics fail. When it comes to viruses or any pathogen, it is important to wash your hands and sanitize. Now a new product has been added to the Thieves® line – the recently registered Thieves® sanitizer. It effectively kills common and illnesscausing germs and bacteria. Make sure you keep your hands clean during the influenza season or during any epidemic, as with the current coronavirus breakout. In Missouri, hospitals are using essential oils to prevent and eliminate mould from offices, surgeries, and intensive care units. Another 25 hospitals now use Young Living essential oils for health care and for disinfecting purposes. Letters to Editor IN MEMORIAM:

TAMARA PENN 1942 ~ 2020

Vitality staff were saddened to learn recently that Tamara Penn, a long-time member of our health community, had passed away on January 23rd after a long illness. She was a vivacious and spunky woman, an expert health practitioner, always full of laughter and good cheer. She will be missed by many friends, patients, and colleagues. Here is a eulogy written by her friend Lynne Jenkins. Julia Woodford

“Tamara was real, authentic, genuine, and loving. She was not only a mother and grandmother, she was Mother Earth herself. She loved and cared for all who passed her way, and many are who they are today because of Tamara.” “For centuries the bright stars in the sky have been the guide and compass that people follow on their journeys because the travellers just had to look up and the bright stars were still constant, comforting, always there. In our lifetime we meet thousands of people on our path. Some are like those bright, shiny stars that sparkle so strong they make others look dull in comparison. Tamara was like one of those stars, and once you met her you would not forget her. When I met Tamara, I didn’t know that she would be the one who not only saved my life, but changed my life

for the better. I am bipolar, and the medical profession had prescribed so many drugs I was like a zombie. I had just about given up when someone told me about a Rebirther named Tamara. I went to her for some sessions and ended up doing so much healing that I was able to discontinue all of my drug prescriptions. I also changed my eyeglasses three times for lesser prescriptions within a very short period of time. She was the no-nonsense parent I never had. She was wise, loving, firm, and challenged me in ways I had never been challenged before. She was my mentor, my guide, my friend, and my associate. I was so impressed by Tamara, and how natural and creative she was, that I went with her to California and trained to be a Rebirther. I came back and quit a stable government job and set myself up in a Rebirthing practice. Thanks to Tamara and her guidance, that was when my life really began. Tamara was not like other people. Her energy when you first met her would bowl you over. Tamara loved life and was always looking for natural ways to heal herself and others. She was not only a Master Rebirther but also an expert in Bach Flower Remedies. Tamara had charisma and www.vitalitymagazine.com

character, the likes of which are not common and she could charm the socks off of anyone. I think the greatest compliment I can give Tamara is to say she was real, authentic, genuine, and loving. She was not only a mother and grandmother, she was Mother Earth herself and a universal mother. She loved and cared for all who passed her way, and many are who they are today because of Tamara. She faced her illness with such grace and dignity it was a true inspiration. She did not feel sorry for herself, was not angry or even depressed. She took it all in her stride and met each daily issue with good humour and acceptance. One day, Tamara took my face in her hands and began singing “I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places,” which took me by surprise as this was a song that had been sung in an adjoining room when my mother was passing away. It was then I understood that there are things we do not understand and that there is a force greater than us guiding our lives and looking after us. And yes, dear Tamara, I will be seeing you. magazine for many years. At one time, one of my students would bring in a package of Vitality magazines for our club, Phoenix T’ai Chi Centre in London, of which I am the founder since 1988. When we did not always receive the delivery, I started subscribing. I found yours was the best health magazine on the market, giving more detail to each article than other magazines, and it was the best for our students. You have been able to get such outstanding professionals to write for you. Also I tend to share different articles with family and friends, especially when the subject matter can be helpful for them. So that is why I prefer the printed magazine. Also I like to pick it up and take my time reading it. I know the costs of producing a magazine lately has been very high. But please keep up your dedicated work. We out here appreciate it very much. Gloria J. Coronavirus Prevention – Continued from page 30 There’s a warning on the bottle of black seed oil that pregnant women shouldn’t take it. The so-called danger is pure speculation. There is no proof of harm. Given that black seed has been available for centuries and there is no record of hazards, this warning on the label is unscientific and scared off at least one of my patients who could have used it for her dry skin and fungus infection.

9

CURCUMIN – An extract of turmeric, curcumin has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-parasitic activity. It is well known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects as well as its anti-cancer benefits. Curcumin is a stronger antifungal than most prescription antifungals. One study showed it to be superior to fluconazole, an effective but expensive antifungal. If you are on a prescription antibiotic, fungal infections can be one of the side effects. So, curcumin and probiotics could be very good things to take to prevent candida or fungal infections of other kinds. Doses are variable depending on the infection and the individual.

10

SILVER HYDROSOL – This form of colloidal silver is effective against numerous viruses and harmful microbes. Be careful with taking colloidal silver in amounts higher than 23 ppm for extended periods of time. Higher non-nanoparticle sized amounts could accumulate

in the system causing a blue skin discolouration. Small particle sizes of colloidal silver (10 to 20 ppm) are generally safe and effective for many different types of infections, especially those resistant to prescription antibiotics.

In Conclusion Echinacea, berberine, zinc, garlic, hypericum, lomatium, goldenseal, cloves, Manuka honey, elderberry, astragalus, grapefruit seed extract and ginger are other natural supplements that people can consider for strengthening their immune defences against viruses. But I feel my top 10 list is the most effective. Most of these will work for a large number of people to kill unwanted microbes. Consult a natural health care practitioner for personalized advice on one or a combination of the top 10 remedies. he astrologers are saying that this is the year we will see the evolution of the world. This is the year that all things broken will crumble and require some creative new forms and structures. This is the year we will decide that pushing a huge rock up an insurmountable hill is an unhealthy struggle, and opt instead for a completely new mode of expressing energy together. This is a year of unrest in the streets of the world, focused on an old inherited patriarchy that serves a few. This is going to be the year of the 100th monkey, when we awaken together from the dream turned nightmare, and find another way. These words are shared with confidence because of Saturn and Pluto’s conjunction in Capricorn that took place on Jan. 12, 2020. A highly anticipated event in astrology, it last happened 500 years ago and inspired the Protestant reformation. At that time, Christian mass and the Bible were in Latin, a language of priests and the highly educated. The reformation was the uprising of the masses who translated it into the language of the commoner, ending a long

By visualizing the change, you would like to see, you can participate in the coming changes rather than feel a victim of them. What is pressing on you? What drives you crazy? hierarchy of privilege. This time, the 2020 conjunction in Capricorn will expose the ways that an institution (Saturn) suppresses, judges, lies, or controls and transforms that institution (Pluto) into something that reflects community, inclusion, truth-telling, and love. It is a year that will accommodate institutions finding a higher frequency. All structures and systems are represented by Saturn. Pluto is the energy of birth, death, and rebirth, and because this is all being influenced by their placement in Capricorn, this revolution will play out in all our patriarchal systems. So, we will see the authority of banks, governments, and cor-

porations transformed. This conjunction on January 12 is already showing itself, and it is just days old as I write. Iranians are in the streets of Tehran protesting the missile attack by their government on the commercial Ukrainian flight. The citizens are not all blindly supporting their government, but rather ‘compelled’ to shout about what is broken and needs to be transformed. Likewise, regardless of how you view the monarchy, a prince has just chosen to disobey the sovereign and follow his heart in order to protect his family from a predatory and bigoted British media. Previously, disobeying the sovereign has meant charges

www.vitalitymagazine.com

of treason, imprisonment, and even death. These are simple examples of the changes we will see in how people interact with traditional authority. Many of us can agree that the system is not working “for the good of all” anymore, and requires deep radical change. This is the year we witness real change. While the world may appear to be falling apart, it is only what’s broken that will be crumbling. Keep in mind also that by November 2020 we will begin to see all manner of wonderful solutions that have been waiting in the wings to find the massive support they have needed, launching a truly creative and healing period. There are still many people who believe the dream that promises if you push a rock up-hill you will eventually reach the top, where life is good. Unfortunately, those same people are working longer hours but less able to reduce the weight of their debt. Imagine the fear and shock as they awaken to an understanding that their whole world view has become untenable. This is the year we get pushed hard enough that even the most complacent will share this discontent. When we share our discontent en masse, we will shift the nature of authoritarian structures. These will be our ‘100th monkey’ moments. Big change will be frightening to many people so we may find ourselves helping each other negotiate the emotional and challenging waters ahead. This is the kind of fundamental change our present planetary conwww.vitalitymagazine.com

junction is promising. This will be a good time to be a coach, facilitator, healer or teacher helping others ‘respond creatively’ rather than ‘react fearfully.’ How we move through it is up to us. All of this planetary activity is really about holding more light, and raising our frequency. I love the image of the opera singer singing a high note and how, at its purest point, it breaks glass. Likewise, I think that we are naturally wanting to raise our vibrations, individually and collectively, and it requires replacing forms/systems that no longer express or facilitate who we are now. This is the year we increase the choices and frequencies available to us. This is the year we upgrade and rewrite our collective operating systems. By visualizing the change you would like to see, you can participate in the coming changes, rather than feel a victim of them. What is pressing on you? What drives you crazy? I would like to see us collectively own, and steward, our natural resources. I would like an end to compound interest and national debt. I would like a shift from war machines to international peacekeeping collectives. What would make your heart sing? This is the year we awaken to each other. This is the year we finally find ourselves floating to the top. Kim is the co-founder of The Algonquin Tea Co., a line of quality teas made from organic wildcrafted Canadian herbs. Spring 2020 Sun Sign Predictions ★★★ by Julie Simmons ★★★ ~ Overview ~ MARCH is a month of transitions. Mercury goes direct on the 9th alongside the new moon, suggesting a good time to make intentions or affirmations regarding service – that which we do for others as well as that which we must needs receive for ourselves. The intense emphasis on consequences is as strong as ever. It’s about how we live and what we consume as well as the awareness that we are in fact living in the consequences of our ancestors, not just our parents but all those who came before. On March 21st, Saturn enters Aquarius where it will stay for a few months, only to return again mid-December. APRIL is all about this. Here is speculation on the way we use information. The wonder and devastation of the internet touches us all. Who is in charge of this is a good question. MAY has the nodes moving into Gemini and Sagittarius, as well as Venus retrograde in Gemini. The emphasis is on communication, education, and how we get around. We are asked to get serious about how we handle these things in our lives. ARIES: March 20 - April 19

The first thing that spring requires is the energy to push through winter’s resistance and be born again into the season of renewal. Every little crocus does it. So do you. Be bold, not rash, and actualize your Self. The effort is great and worthy from March 19 through the 23rd. Let it serve your ambitions. Then, from April 21st onward, turn your attention toward social realities both political and personal. Stand up for yourself without harm to others on April 6th through 8th. May is a month for editing. Think before you blurt, toss empty promises and useless objects that simply block your way. It’s a task. TAURUS: April 20 - May 20

Obscure as it may seem, you are on a path. There are upsets and road blocks at times but nonetheless you travel the road, accompanied by your ambitions but more importantly your values, including your beliefs about your personal worthiness. Open your eyes to this path in March and April. Look squarely into the face of your ambitions without judgment. If you don’t like what you see, take a detour. If it’s good, get busy creating your professional identity, especially in April. Intentions are powerful on April 23rd. Make some. May requires the taking of inventory and the jettisoning of things that weigh you down and get in the way of your goals. 50

GEMINI: May 21 - June 20

The promise of spring is nothing less than the surefire knowledge of every spring that we have ever lived; we do indeed resurrect after winter. Sap rises in trees as well as humans. Climate change may skew the dance, but nevertheless light is increasing and hope is in our blood. There is a world of interesting things to learn or teach, which is exactly Gemini’s life purpose. Perhaps you are the wise teacher or possibly you are seeking one. March 15th through 23rd brings clarity. April beckons you to use this clarity to dispel illusions or maybe delusions. It is what it is. The trickster is alive and well in May, showing you where you are hauling dead weight. All you have to do is just let go and get on with what really matters. It’s a process. Don’t force it. And never forget: S/he who laughs, lasts. CANCER: June 21 - July 21

Confusion regarding the motives of others dissipates after March 9th. The promise of spring’s arrival takes you from relentless negotiations to a deeper process: Less, she said he said, and more questioning the meaning of relationship in the face of the enormous change we are all feeling. It might be time for deep therapy, more structured participation in social change, or simply vigorous exit from a toxic relationship.

www.vitalitymagazine.com

April sharpens your view. The way is clear. May requires deep letting go of old griefs or just about anything from the past that haunts or troubles. Letting go isn’t about severing or erecting barriers, it’s more like making soup, allowing your past to become the spice that flavors your life in the present. Good soup often requires time to cook. LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22

March sounds the wake-up call to what your partner has been trying to tell you for awhile. Bad or good isn’t the issue. See if you can just listen and let them speak their truth. By the end of March it seems you never worked so hard or felt the weight of upholding your lifestyle as much as you do now. It’s time to find others to help you do some of the heavy lifting. In April watch out for overreactions. Mostly people want to do their best even if it isn’t up to your standards or how you would do it. Your lessons are about genuine social interaction – not social media, not virtual interaction. May is the sorting month. Who do you love? Keep them close. Who wastes your time? Avoid them. Who don’t you know so well? Consider if you would like to know them better or not. The time will come … Continued on next page

VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21

March comes in with a question: What is love? No answer is required. Better to find ways to express yourself with love, through art. The more you taste, touch, feel, the closer you get to the essence of love. Be aware of your senses March 18 – 24th. As March becomes April your efforts turn toward living the best life you can. Why do you get up in the morning and do this or that? How is your work, your job also your daily practice? May puts the emphasis on your calling, your legacy, your responsibilities both chosen and not. Let the winds of change carry off whatever blocks you from getting to where you’re going. And understand that people say many things that are fascinating, interesting and flat-out lies. This world is a shell game and it’s impossible to know which shell hides the pea, so just go about your business. Avoid distractions. Focus on the task at hand. LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22

Be vigorous in March with all matters concerning roots and foundations; be it the tree in your yard or the ancestors at your table. You don’t see these things but they have great influence on our lives. The promise of new relationships or new life breathed into old ones grows stronger after the 24th. April promises vigorous engagement with creative projects and children, both the inner and the outer kind. The key is discipline combined with spontaneity. You are the guardian of all sorts of potential. Confrontations on or near April 7th are meant to show you who you really are. May is all about revision. What is true and what isn’t. What does it take to unlearn things which are no longer relevant for these times, this life? Explore the sense of liberation that comes with letting go from May 22nd onward. SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Your words have power, particularly March 9th 21st. Use them to warm hearts and inspire confidence. After that, in April your mandate is to turn toward the domestic. Secure your home as best you can. Honour the ancestors, even those not of your blood. We are all related. May is about magic, both good and bad – the everyday kind that can take us to wonder or despair in an instant: Mind magic. Be aware of what you are thinking or even that you are thinking. Thoughts of fear and loss, of constant danger, arise as if by themselves. See if you can gently exchange them with thoughts of transformation, renewal and the wonder of life itself. Issues of trust, sharing, and intimacy (and their companion, betrayal) call for your attention starting on April 22nd and throughout the month of May. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20

The instability of the world makes us all anxious about security and support. You’re not used to the persistent drumbeat of such a theme. Clarity about where and how you live arises in early March and again 52

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2020

between the 19th and 25th. The key is to start right where you are and go for what’s sustainable for you. April requires commitment to learning or teaching. Be willing to open doors that promise to open your mind. No effort will be wasted. May is about the lies we tell ourselves so we can believe the lies of others. It’s the perfect time to jettison such behaviours even if it makes you sad. Writing in your journal can help. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19

You continue to hold up the world in March. The key is to balance your notion of what works for you with your obligations and responsibilities. Capricorn is the manager of the zodiac. Managers generally need teams that work with them. Call in supports between March 20th and 23rd. It’s good for them as well as you. April puts the focus on finances and/or values. Consider your wants and we have needs. Can you spot the difference? May is a time for separating wheat from chaff like fairy tale princesses of old. Sorting through the empty calories of your life on all levels of body, mind, emotions and spirit will bolster your energy as well as the efficiency in all you do. AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17

Be respectful of all the forces and energies over which you do not have control, at least until March 21st. That’s when you begin to get a real glimpse into exactly what you can and can’t master. Be realistic, not pessimistic about this. April is time to get serious about your present and how it relates to your future, particularly 2021. May is for love and art and all things creative. If you’re not having enough fun or don’t feel free to express yourself, get serious about changing your relationship to restrictions that impede self-expression. Make an affirmation regarding love in all its manifestations on May 22nd or 23rd. It’s a seed that will take root and sprout over time. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19

Like a mermaid floating up to the surface you may seem to see things with greater clarity after March 9th but is this the best kind of seeing for a Pisces? The oppressive sense of the culture you swim in is a strong call to activism, not despair, March 15th – 25th. You get to determine what kind of action you could take. April opens a door to humanitarian service. Look for the joy in actions that are motivated by genuine compassion rather than pity. May is time to turn toward home and family issues. We are all deeply conditioned to create the lives we first experienced, over and over again. Here is an opportunity to do it differently, your way, inasmuch as you are not the child you once were, at the mercy of wayward adults. Imagine what a minimalist might do. Then do it. Safe Food Matters Inc. (SFM) and its president Mary Lou McDonald were in Canada’s Federal Court in Toronto on Thursday, January 30, to challenge Health Canada’s 2017 renewal of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, and the subject of a US$2 billion award in the US (under appeal), and the basis for various class actions being launched in Canada. In taking the regulator to court, McDonald is asking for judicial review of Health Canada’s decision to reject the notice of objection of SFM and not establish an independent panel of scientists to review the basis for the renewed registration of glyphosate. Andrea Gonsalves, partner with Stockwoods LLP will serve as SFM’s counsel for the case. Founded in 2016, Safe Food Matters Inc. is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health and protecting the environment through educating and fostering public engagement on the safety of food production technologies.
