OPINION
Woodford Files Here we go into the fall season, back to work and school. Yet in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, that pesky coronavirus is keeping us anxious and afraid. Or more accurately, the mainstream media is scaring people out of their wits on a daily basis with stories of rising infection rates and threats of a ‘second wave’. This in spite of the fact that the average death rate for COVID-19 is 0.009% globally, which means the average person’s chance of surviving this infection is 99.991%. (https://tinyurl.com/covidrealstats) Meanwhile, information about natural and nontoxic coronavirus prevention and treatment strategies is being suppressed by the media, medical authorities, and government. In fact, data on effective supplements and medicines including vitamin D, C, zinc, selenium, and even hydroxychloroquine is being wiped from top social media platforms and news channels, as we wait for the mighty vaccine. (See “COVID-19 How Can I Cure Thee, Let Me Count The Ways”: https://tinyurl.com/coronacures) Fortunately, there are powerful freedom fighters pushing back against censorship and corporate control of health care, including Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., founder of Children’s Health Defense (CHD) in the U.S. On Aug. 17, CHD filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and three “fact-checking companies”, charging them with censoring truthful public health
posts, including “factual information about vaccines, 5G, and public health agencies.” Then on Aug. 29, Kennedy spoke at a rally of more than one million people in Berlin, Germany explaining how governments exert control through fear. According to author Ty Bollinger, “Kennedy said the [U.S.] government and those with the greatest wealth and control have done a terrible job on public health and will shift us all to 5G and a cashless society. He said that 5G is being pushed on us as a good thing but it will be used for surveillance and data harvesting. Kennedy added that the COVID pandemic is a crisis of convenience that is destroying the middle class, impoverishing us all, and making the powerful elite even more powerful. He closed with the message that we must protect our fellow humans, our children, and our freedoms and democracy.” (See https://tinyurl.com/KennedygoestoBerlin) In a lecture on Aug. 16 addressing the censorship of existing treatments for coronavirus by public health authorities and the media Dr. Lee Merritt, a member of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, said: “If we learn how to treat and protect ourselves against designer viruses, their [the technocrats’] ability to keep us in line by keeping us in fear simply vanishes.” (https://tinyurl.com/medicaltechnocracy) May this issue of Vitality bring you so many good ideas about tools for protecting your health that your fear will vanish too. GROWING UP HEALTHY IN A TOXIC WORLD How We All Can Benefit from Detoxifying Our Lifestyles By HELKE FERRIE
OPINION
Helke Ferrie’s great grandchildren, Sophie and Omar, enjoy a healthy lifestyle in the countryside
I
n the late 1990s, a scientist from the World Health Organization (WHO) presented a computer model at a conference in Toronto on infertility issues, showing that if the then-current pollution trends continued, the human race would go extinct in about 500 years (15 generations). In fact, the survival of our species may even be as precarious as that of the loon, a bird whose eggs can’t hatch in heavily polluted waters or in environments with dramatically changing gas compositions in the air. Today, sperm counts, motility, and quality are still problematic, and the statistics of two decades ago still hold: In Western countries, about 25% of people under the age of 25 are infertile, and human sperm count is half the level of the early 1960s (since pesticides and synthetic chemicals began to spoil air, water, soil, food, and medicines). Today we can add the birth control pill to the list of items with disastrous effects, a list that includes DDT and other “gender bender” pesticides and herbicides which interfere with the normal development of the next generations’ sperm and eggs. Hormone-disrupting chemicals can also be found in plastic wrap, vehicle exhaust fumes, PCBs, and meat and dairy products from cows fed antibiotics and hormones to increase their bulk before slaughter. To save the human race from extinction by increasing the rate of healthy babies being born, we will need a number of 6

interventions, especially broad access to organic food and the avoidance of synthetic chemicals and antibiotics. A key component of this is also, of course, the restoration of the human gut microbiome. (See my articles of March 2016, July/August 2016, and February 2017, currently archived on Vitality’s website, for further information.) [1][2][3] These steps require us to make choices that are both environmentally friendly and kinder to animals.
Nature is Not for Profit
Margaret Somerville, founding director of McGill University’s Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law, observed in her famous book, The Ethical Canary: Science, Society, and the Human Spirit (2000), that science, law, the economy, and social policy do not travel at the same speed – each has its own priorities. “Nature time” is at odds with human concerns … but “nature time” always wins. Nature encompasses both slow geologic shifts as well as rapid biological mutations that are potentially disastrous when humans disregard ecological and genetic imperatives. “Business time” (which wants profits and growth every quarter), “science time” (which wants no cautionary limits set on its curiosity), and “social policy time” (which always reacts after the fact) are all on a collision course with “nature time” which cares nothing for profit and theoretical curiosity, and is unforgiving of tardy social policy. The classic 1989 study by Mark Nathan Cohen, Health and the Rise of Civilization, provides a magisterial survey of the evolution and origins of infectious disease and chronic illnesses starting two million years ago. The first experiments with agriculture, 10,000 years ago, reduced food diversity to reliance on just a few staples and resulted in those foods becoming less nutritious through domestication. Osteoporosis followed, while cancer and infectious disease gained a foothold in bodies that genetically had not changed – we are still Paleolithic people today.
Research Reveals Nutritional Causes of Disease
In the 1930s, dentist Weston A. Price conducted a study to compare the development of teeth and facial bone structure between cultures all over the world, over several generations, and corresponding that with their traditional diets. This research identified what constituted essential nutrients that were present in the diets of those “primitives” who were totally healthy. Price also discovered that those Western societies which had adopted a refined carbohydrate diet (today called the standard American diet or SAD), showed high prevalence of bad teeth and chronic illness. This is considered the beginning of the study of nutritional medicine as a science. Subsequent research has shown that hunter-gatherer societies get a minimum of 60,000 mg vitamin C per day from www.vitalitymagazine.com

their diet, while modern Results from The China Study revealed that Western diets are often virtually “diseases of affluence” devoid of this essential vitamin. included cancer, In 1983, two researchers affilleukemia, diabetes, iated with Cornell University began a groundbreaking 20- and coronary disease – year study that compared the all triggered by a lack of essential nutrients disease burden of Chinese and that are refined American peoples. The results out of our food showed that the “diseases of affluence” include cancer, leukemia, diabetes, and coronary disease – all triggered by a lack of essential nutrients that are refined out of our food. The “diseases of poverty” are infectious diseases, tuberculosis, and parasites, due to malnutrition from overall calorie and protein scarcity. As in Dr. Price’s research, the results also show that once food intake became adequate, optimal health depended on the same set of essential nutrients, and illness was associated with our denatured SAD (see Campbell and Campbell, The China Study 2005). At a conference in May 2003 at Mount Sinai’s School of Medicine in New York, co-hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), researchers examined the so-called “Barker hypothesis,” named after a British physician who noted that “exposures and risk factors encountered early in life can predispose an individual to the development of disease later in life.” Today we call such illnesses epigenetic (for more on this see my feature published in the February 2017 Vitality)[3], and chief among these are Parkinson’s, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
How the Environment Affects Kids’ Health
At the WHO conference mentioned earlier, we learned that when a fetus or child is exposed to environmental neurotoxins (such as pesticides or solvents), “silent damage is inflicted” on the brain that contributes much later to overwhelming damage. Pesticides and Dental Fillings – The development of Parkinson’s is significantly correlated with postnatal exposure to pesticides, which diminish the number of neurons that maintain appropriate levels of dopamine responsible for all fine-motor movement. If a person is re-exposed later to even low levels of pesticides, dopamine production erodes. The same process is at work in predisposing children to heart disease via mothers’ exposure to various environmental toxins, including those in her teeth (mercury amalgam) and diet. The overall conclusion was that environmental toxins “induce effects that can be transgenerational” because “exposure to environmental agents in the womb can alter gene expression in the developing fetus.” Because kid’s immune systems mature over their first few years, exposure to pesticides during that time sets them up for all kinds of immune disease later on (World Resources 8

She observed the are oily or have a high development of Mexican chilfat content) dren born and raised in a village where pesticides were used liberally, and compared them with children in a foothills area where no pesticides were ever used. The perceptual and mental skills of the valley children not only lagged dramatically behind those of the foothills children, but were beyond repair (Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), June 1998). This study demonstrated the staggering implications of these chemicals for the future. At the WHO conference, Dr. Philip J. Landrigan pointed out that even a five-point shift in the average IQ of a population (via, for example, prenatal exposure to pesticides) almost doubles the number of braindamaged children and halves the number of gifted ones. Chlorine and DDT – If there are to be healthy children in humanity’s future, research suggests that immediate action is needed to address our exposure to various toxic compounds. A September 2003 article by Hauser et al. in Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) showed that chlorine’s damaging effects start with sperm. Similarly, maternal exposure to DDT (banned in North America since the 1970s, but still present in foods arriving from Asia and Africa) can cause neurological damage in offspring. Phthalates in Plastic – Phthalates can, due to their estrogenic effect, cause a shortening of pregnancy, thereby priming the low-weight, premature baby for various health risks throughout life (EHP, Nov. 14, 2003). (Ed note: Phthalates can leach from food storage containers and food wrap into foods (particularly those foods that are oily or that have a high fat content) on contact and when heated or microwaved. plastic/vinyl products also causes phthalate release.)[4] Flame Retardants – Commercial flame retardants used in electric appliances, upholstery fabric, and building materials are highly carcinogenic. Yet they are being found in 37% of breast milk in North America, thereby setting up nursing children for later cancer. Fluoride – As reported in the National Post on October 6, 2016, Ontario’s Liberal government opined how useful fluoridation is, citing that dental health in Calgary declined when water fluoridation was stopped. However, dental health declines dramatically in the presence of sugar in all its forms, from pop to candy; fluoride not only doesn’t prevent dental carries, it increases neurological damage and the risk of cancer. Fortunately, nature is stubbornly resilient. In a 10-year feline study, Dr. Francis Pottenger showed in the 1930s the following: Healthy cats fed a diet similar to our standard American diet produced offspring with chronic illnesses by the second generation; and the third generation was mostly infertile. However, those few who were able to reproduce had perfectly healthy cats three generations later, if all three generations were given a nutrient-rich diet. So, where do we go from here? We have the knowledge to make good choices. Consider the results of a National Institutes of Health study (EHP, Oct. 31, 2002) which showed that simply by feeding children organic food, those neurotoxic and carcinogenic pesticides were dramatically reduced in all body fluids and tissues.
Strategies for Raising Healthy Kids s If you are planning a baby, go to a naturopath first and ask them to supervise a year-long detox program for you – a general detox of each parent’s body is well advised. s Avoid carcinogenic, benzene-containing, perfumed toiletries, and ensure that toothpaste does not contain neurotoxic and thyroid-damaging fluoride and phenols. s Invest in a water filtration system that removes fluoride, chlorine, pesticides, etc. s Use cornstarch-based body powders instead of talcum (which is now known to trigger ovarian cancer). (Editor’s note: In October 2016, “For the third time, Johnson & Johnson was hit with a multimillion-dollar jury verdict over whether the talc in its iconic baby powder causes ovarian cancer when applied regularly for feminine hygiene.” (CTV News)[5] s Use environmentally friendly laundry detergent for cleaning your clothes, and rinse with vinegar for its water softening and anti-cling effects. Conventional detergents have been linked to cancer. Tide®, for example, contains a lengthy list of carcinogenic and neurotoxic ingredients, all of which are identified as such by the EPA. For a detailed discussion, see Dr. Mercola’s Dec. 21, 2011, article: “Are you poisoning your household with this chore?”[6] Continued on page 47 12

In autumn after the garden was harvested, jars and crocks would be loaded with beans, carrots, cucumbers, and cabbage for fermenting into an assortment of tangy pickles and tongue-tingling sauerkraut.

can cause spoilage. Salt draws the moisture out of food, producing a more flavourful and crispy finished product which makes it the best-suited starter for vegetables such as pickles and sauerkraut. But be cautious with the amount. Excessive use of salt can actually halt the culturing process. You don’t have to use much salt; in fact you can ferment food without the use of any salt. But using at least a small amount helps to prevent undesirable bacteria from forming and increases shelf life. Most of the foods covered here are meant to be eaten in small quantities as condiments. As a general rule, each quart jar of food requires about 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt. If working in larger batches you could go with about 3 tablespoons of salt per 5 pounds of vegetables as a basic ratio (or adjust the amount to suit your taste). I like to stay on the lower end of given measures and, unlike grandma who used pickling salt, I prefer to use sea salt in my recipes. A benefit of using quality sea salt or Himalayan salt from the health food store is that it’s full of trace minerals which are a good addition to the diet. Do not use regular white table salt because it has been bleached and processed with chemicals to make it white and flowing. This in turn can interfere with the fermenting process. WHEY – Like salt, whey prompts the growth of good bacteria. Because it is dairy-based, it may be of concern to those who are dairy intolerant. If using whey, make sure you start with a fresh strained batch. I make my whey by lining a sieve with cheesecloth, filling it with plain yogurt or buttermilk, and allowing it to sit in a warm place until the whey has dripped through into the bottom bowl. A guideline is to use about 2 tablespoons of whey per quart (or per litre) of food. Using whey produces a less crispy, less flavourful finished product with a shorter storage life, so make smaller batches. Or add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt along with whey to each quart of food for good measure. KEFIR GRAINS & DRIED STARTER CULTURES – You can use milk or water kefir grains, or freeze-dried starter cultures (available at health food stores) according to package directions. The latter is made out of vegetable bac-

Add salt. 2) Add enough water to Fermented Carrots fill the jar, leaving about 1inch headspace for pressure to escape. 3) Stir with wooden spoon until salt is dissolved. 4) Cover with a lid, set in warm spot in kitchen for 2 to 3 days, or until kvass is “working” – you’ll see tiny bubbles rising up and down in the jar. Taste, and when suitable to your liking, store in fridge to halt further action. 5) After the liquid portion of kvass is used up, you can use the slightly tart leftover beets to make a delicious borscht. Alternately they can be chopped and added to the salad bowl.
Fermented Carrots Fermented carrot sticks make colourful additions to vegetable platters and are great garnishes for salads and toppers for sandwiches. This recipe makes three (500 ml) sized canning jars but can be multiplied as needed.

Ingredients • 5 cups of carrot sticks • a few sprigs of fresh herbs (rosemary, dill and thyme) or spices (cumin seed, coriander, celery seed) • Hot peppers (optional) • Garlic (optional) • 1/2 Tbsp sea salt (per jar) • 1/2 Tbsp whey (per jar) Traditional Sauerkraut • water 1) Scrape carrots and cut into 3-1/2 inch long sticks. This will allow them to stand in the jar. Remember to leave room for 1/2-inch head space. 2) Add a few sprigs of fresh herbs (I have used rosemary, dill and thyme) or spices (cumin seed, coriander, celery seed) to each jar to suit taste. Hot peppers and garlic can also be added. 3) Add 1/2 Tbsp sea salt and 1/2 Tbsp whey to each jar. Cover with water, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. 4) Put on lids and shake well. Let stand at room temperature for 4 to 6 days or until they suit your taste. 5) Once fermented to your liking, store carrots in cold place or fridge to stop them from working further. The nice thing about fermented carrots is that they stay nice and crisp – something kids love!

Traditional Sauerkraut Fermented cabbage and other vegetables are very rich in healthy bacteria that can boost intestinal strength. Ingredients: • a few green cabbages (shredded) • 3 to 5 Tbsp sea salt (or to suit taste) 1) Layer shredded green cabbage in a crock, sprinkling each layer with sea salt (approx. 3 to 5 Tbsp, or to suit taste, for every 6 – 8 pounds of cabbage). 2) Weigh the cabbage down with a rock and cover with a cloth. 3) Push rock down every few hours until cabbage is covered in its own brine. 4) Allow to ferment at room temperature for about 2 weeks, or until working has stopped. When it’s ready, place crock in cold place or transfer sauerkraut to clean jars and store in fridge.
Hungarian Fermented Garden Cukes I got this recipe from my Hungarian mother-in-law. They call these “sun-cooked” pickles in Hungary. I really love them – this recipe provides a great way to put overgrown garden cukes to good use at the end of the season. You simply cut the tips off large cucumbers so they will stand nicely in a gallon jar. I also toss in the cut-off tips for extra bites. Ingredients: • several garden cucumbers • few peeled garlic cloves • sprig of dill • 1 hot pepper (optional) • 2 Tbsp sea salt • 3 cups water • 1 slice white bread 1) Fill a gallon jar with cukes. 2) Add some peeled garlic cloves, a sprig of dill (and a hot pepper, if desired). 3) Dissolve sea salt in water and pour into jar, adding more water as needed to submerge the cucumbers. 4) Cut a slice of white bread to fit into the jar opening and place on top of the liquid. 5) Cover with a cloth and secure with a rubber band. Place in the sun and allow to work for 3 to 5 days or until pickles are tangy to the teeth. 6) Slice and serve. Store in fridge or cold place.
Fermented Apple Slices These make wonderful additions to winter salads and tasty garnishes for sandwiches, wraps and other foods needing a little something special. Kombucha – the Miracle Tonic If you’ve never heard of ‘scoby’ you’ve probably never indulged in a healthy glass of kombucha – a super healthy ‘living’ tonic. I call it ‘living’ because it’s like sourdough starter, something that grows from batch to batch! I prefer oolong tea as a starter, but you can use any good quality black tea leaves or loose tea with good results. I wouldn’t recommend herbal teas or those with special flavours or oils as they may not produce good results, especially for people just getting into the hobby of kombucha brewing. And you should only use organic white sugar for this brew. The tricky part is having a ‘mother’ to help you get the kombucha started! Of course, I am not talking about your mom but rather a magical little gelatinous-like glob known as “scoby” or, as some people call it, a kombucha mushroom which is the starter culture needed for brewing kombucha. If you have a friend who’ll share their established scoby with you, you’re off to a great start. If not, buy a kombucha starter culture kit from a reputable source and follow their directions for use.

your next new batch of kombucha, you can share the ‘new mother’ or ‘the baby’ scoby with a friend who might like to try a batch. My Top 3 Ways to Keep Well
...as we go back to work and school BY JULIA WOODFORD
As our healthcare and government resources are stretched to the limit during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is vital that we as individuals become more self-reliant. By keeping ourselves well, we stay out of emergency rooms and doctors’ offices, and are more available to help those who need it. So here are my “To increase your resistance personal recommendations to infection, regular physical for building immunity and activity and adequate resilience as we go back to vitamin D levels probably work and school.

have the most scientific
Get Your Vitamin D evidence to support them,” says Dr. Tom Frieden, Levels Up – In his former Director of the “Coronavirus Protection and Treatment” feature in Centers for Disease Control Vitality’s Spring issue, Dr. Zoltan Rona, MD stated: “Vitamin D promotes the production of cathelicidin, a protein with natural antibiotic properties. Cathelicidin kills viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. The more vitamin D in the system, the more the body makes this antibiotic.”[1] Also of interest, Dr. Tom Frieden, former CDC Director, wrote an article for CNN addressing the current state of COVID-19 infections in the U.S. In the article, he identified ways to increase our personal health resilience: “Of all of the various proposed measures to increase your resistance to infection, regular physical activity and adequate vitamin D levels probably have the most scientific evidence to support them – and can be done safely.”[2] Vitamin D can be taken daily with meals, according to dosages recommended by health experts such as Dr. Rona. I like to take a vitamin D3/K2 combo at least once per day.

Get Outdoors: Solar UV Rays Kill Viruses – Your skin manufactures vitamin D when exposed to solar rays. Sunshine may even help with prevention and recovery from the coronavirus. According to a report in the November 2005 Journal of Virology: “Sunlight, or more specifically solar UV radiation (UV), acts as the principal 24

natural virucide in the environment. UV radiation kills viruses by chemically modifying their genetic material, DNA and RNA.”[3] So if you are able to sit out on your balcony or patio for at least a half hour daily, or go strolling in a field or forest where social distancing is easy, that is ideal for sun exposure. If you cannot get out in the sunshine and must stay indoors, you could try the next best thing – UVB phototherapy. Invented in Germany and based on research by Nikola Tesla, ultraviolet lights have been traditionally used for treating psoriasis, dermatitis, and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). UVB phototherapy has also been found to raise vitamin D levels in the bloodstream significantly while having an antiviral effect. Some clinics offer UVB phototherapy sessions, such as the Nature Medicine Clinic in St. Catharines, Ont. Alternatively, you can do your own UVB phototherapy at home using a small handheld device or larger floor model made by local company Solarc Systems. Vitamin C to the Rescue – After reading Dr. Rona’s article on coronavirus protection, I started taking an average of 3,000 to 5,000 mg of vitamin C daily, spread throughout the day. Sometimes I take it in powder form, and sometimes in liposomal form, to cover all the bases. Kids, on the other hand, could take 500 mg twice a day to boost their immune defences. According to a recent report by Andrew W. Saul, founder of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, “Vitamin C helps to kill viruses and reduce symptoms of infection. It’s not a COVID-19 cure, but nothing is. It might just save your life, though, and will definitely reduce the severity of the infection. If someone tells you it’s not proven, consider this: A) Nothing is proven to work against COVID-19, because it is a new virus; B) Vitamin C has worked against every single virus including influenza, pneumonia, and even poliomyelitis.”[5] C) IV vitamin C in China: In addition to oral use, vitamin C is now being used in very high doses intravenously to treat coronavirus patients. In his March 2020 report, “Shanghai Government Officially Recommends Vitamin C for COVID-19”, Andrew Saul stated: “The government of Shanghai, China has announced its official recommendation that COVID-19 should be treated with high amounts of intravenous vitamin C. Dosage recommendations vary with severity of illness, from 50 to 200 milligrams per kilogram body weight per day to as much as 200 mg/kg/day.”[6] D) IV vitamin C in New York: After IV vitamin C had showed such promise for COVID treatment in China, it then was adopted by some doctors in the U.S. In a March 24 article, the Daily Mail reported that New York hospitals are treating coronavirus patients with high dosages of vitamin C www.vitalitymagazine.com

after promising results from China. The article stated: “Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a Long Island-based pulmonologist and critical-care specialist with Northwell Health, shared that he has been giving his intensive-care patients 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C. Those patients are then re-administered the same doses of this powerful antioxidant three or four times a day, the doctor explained to the New York Post.” F) IV vitamin C in Ontario: Those seeking IV vitamin C in this province will find that clinics are few and far between. Says Dr. Zoltan Rona, “We are open for IV vitamin C but not to any diagnosed COVID patients. That’s for the safety of our staff and their families. For those who wish to prevent the infection, it’s a better idea to go with the oral supplements I detailed in my article. Furthermore, anyone unfortunate enough to be hospitalized for this infection should demand IV vitamin C from their doctors, as per the successful Chinese protocol. It is a proven treatment, the only one at this time that is safe enough to use on most people.” On the other hand, for prevention and immune boosting purposes, IVC can be useful. For example, Dr. Rona stated: “I have some patients that fly often so they benefit in preventing infections with IV vitamin C as part of their overall health program.” In addition to infection prevention, IV vitamin C therapy has many health benefits, including “immune boosting for diseases like cancer, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome, and for toxic heavy metal detox (eg. mercury toxicity),” says Dr. Rona. OVERMEDICATED
Prescription Drugs Can Increase the Risk of Death from COVID-19 – Here’s How to Reduce Your Risk BY DR. ZoltAn P. RonA, MD, MSc.
(Ed note: This article was first published in Vitality’s May newsletter, and has since been updated for release in print.)
A
A recent article by Dr. David Healy, MD and Dr. Joan-Ramon, MD underlined the significant role played by common medications in increasing the risk of pneumonia
re we overmedicating ourselves? During the COVID-19 pandemic, an important fact has not been well reported by the media. That is – a major side effect of commonly used medications is the increased risk of pneumonia. This in turn increases the risk of death. During the pandemic this risk has certainly become magnified, especially in seniors who are often taking a combination of the drugs most likely to increase pneumonia risk. Co-factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity have often been blamed for the higher risk of death by COVID. However, scientific research has implicated the chronic use of certain drugs as a more likely mitigating factor. And in many cases, the risk can be minimized by reducing doses or discontinuing these drugs. For many of us, alternatives can be used to provide the same benefits as the drugs without all the side effects.
The Key Role of Prescription Drugs
A recent article published by Dr. David Healy, MD and Dr. Joan-Ramon, MD underlined the important role played by common medications in increasing the risk of pneumonia.[1] It is firmly established by numerous scientific studies that chronic use of the following classes of drugs can make people, especially the elderly, more susceptible to pneumonia, not to mention many other chronic illnesses: 28
VITALITY MAGAZINE – FALL 2020
www.vitalitymagazine.com
• Antipsychotic Drugs (e.g. olanzepine, risperidone, quetiapine) • Anticholineric Drugs (e.g. chlorphenamine, diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine) • Antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine, paroxetine) • Opioid analgesics (morphine, codeine, hydromorphone) • Other Analgesics (e.g. gabapentin & pregabalin) • Proton Pump Inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole) • Cancer chemotherapy drugs (e.g. methotrexate, 5-FU) • Corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs (e.g. prednisone) • ACE Inhibitors (e.g. ramipril, lisinopril) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) (e.g. candesartan, telmisartan) • NSAIDS (e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen) • Azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine
Proton Pump Inhibitors (Heartburn Drugs)
Let’s look at a major class of these drugs. One of the commonest prescriptions seen in the elderly population are the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs are the most popular and powerful of all the heartburn drugs, so called because they bind or inhibit an enzyme (hydrogen potassium adenosine triphosphatase), also known as the proton pump. The proton pump causes the parietal cells in the stomach to produce acid. Through this proton pump inhibition, stomach acidity is reduced or eliminated much more, and for much longer periods of time, than the histamine H-2 receptor blockers (e.g. cimetidine or ranitidine). The latter are hardly prescribed any more these days. The best-known PPIs are pantoprazole (Tecta), esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec, Losec), pantoprazole (Protonix), and rabeprazole (Pariet). These drugs are usually well tolerated if used for a few days or weeks, but common side effects include constipation (a frequent symptom of excessively low stomach acidity), diarrhea, headache, skin itch, and skin rash. There have been reported cases of acute pancreatitis, flu-like ill-

nesses, pneumonia, vomiting, chronic kidney disease, low platelets, hepatitis, and autoimmune disorders. The adverse drug reactions are variable from person to person but can be quite devastating when used for extended periods of time. Both proton pump In one study, the risk of inhibitors and the histamine pneumonia was found to H-2 blocking drugs can raise be 89% higher for those the risk of hip fractures by using proton pump 44% if taken for longer than inhibitors ... And users a year because, when you of acid-suppressive block acid production, you medications were four make it more difficult for the times more likely to have body to absorb calcium, pneumonia than nonusers magnesium, silicon and other minerals found in healthy bones. When you decrease or eliminate acid production with these drugs, you make it harder for the gastrointestinal tract to digest food and this can cause gas, bloating, and constipation. Sometimes this set of symptoms is labeled as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) for which further medication is often prescribed. By the way, ginger and/or enteric-coated peppermint oil might be a reasonable alternative to the drugs commonly used for IBS. When either proton pump inhibitors or the histamine H-2 receptor blockers are used, stomach acidity can become so reduced that the body fails to absorb vital nutrients like iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium and numerous others. You also reduce your primary defense against bugs in food (bacteria, parasites and fungi like candida). This then can lead to both acute and chronic gastrointestinal infections and often sets one up for a lifetime of IBS, candidiasis, and food sensitivity syndromes. Essentially, you are increasing your risk of food poisoning every time you use these “remedies”. PPIs have also recently been associated with a much higher risk of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. It’s no wonder that the use of PPIs is generally associated with greater risks of death and shortened lifespans. Clostridium difficile bacteria can cause life-threatening colitis. A 2005 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people taking proton pump inhibitors were almost three times more likely to have a C-difficile infection than non-users. Those taking H2 receptor antagonists were twice as likely to have the infection. A 2004 study reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that the risk of pneumonia was 89% higher for those using proton pump inhibitors and 63% higher for those using H2-receptor antagonists. Acidsuppressive drug users were four times more likely to have pneumonia than non-users. This underlines the importance of stomach acid as a systemic immune-boosting substance. Suppressing it will have its infectious disease consequences,

especially if this is done on a long-term basis. In 2000, the histamine H-2 receptor blocker, Propulsid, was taken off the market due to associated cardiac deaths. While it seems to me that only cardiac deaths are the sole reason the HPB and the FDA takes drugs off the market, perhaps increasing rates of life-threatening pneumonias and C. difficile infections ought to be considered for drug removal as well. Proton pump inhibitors and the histamine H-2 receptor blockers should be used sparingly, if at all. Certainly, the natural alternatives are a better option here.
Alternatives to Heartburn Medication
Much like antibiotics, heartburn drugs of all kinds are grossly over-prescribed. According to most health care professionals, perhaps one in a hundred people actually need these drugs, while 99 out of 100 really need to change their diets and/or use safer alternatives. Drink more water: In my practice, I have found that many people who suffer from heartburn or reflux symptoms can control their symptoms simply by drinking more water that helps neutralize acid excess symptoms. So, if you get heartburn, drink an extra glass of water and watch the symptoms just disappear. It is a well-known fact that many patients living in long-term health facilities are dehydrated and this itself predisposes one to an early death. There are probably as many natural remedies for hyper-

There are a variety of tests your doctor can order for you to make the diagnosis. These include blood tests, breath tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, scopes and even biopsies. Medical doctors treat the H. pylori infection with antibiotics and a variety of antacids and/or acid suppressing drugs. Try a therapeutic diet: The best thing to do is eat small meals throughout the day instead of the usual three large meals. Drink more spring or purified water to help dilute acid excess. Therapeutic vegetable juices include carrot, spinach, beet, cucumber, parsley, celery, cabbage and potato. These can be used liberally throughout the day (two litres daily). Raw potato juice just before breakfast can help with acid regurgitation. Avoid red meat, alcohol, hot sauces, spicy and fried foods, added salt, caffeine products, sugar, and refined carbohydrate products. Remove aspirin; check your food allergies: If you use aspirin, replace it with white willow bark capsules. At least this will not further aggravate the discomfort. A large number of people suffer from hyperacidity because of an allergy to milk protein (casein) or gluten found in most grains. Food allergy or sensitivity testing might be a good idea in the more stubborn cases failing to respond to other diet and supplement changes. Take supplements to relieve inflammation: Supplements that have a healing effect against H. pylori include garlic, wild mountain oregano oil, berberine, lactobacillus acidophilus and other probiotics, L-glutamine, bovine colostrum, essential fatty acids (flax seed oil, cod liver oil, salmon oil, evening prim32

rose oil, borage oil), licorice root tincture or herbal tea, choline, lecithin, PABA, bismuth, bentonite, goldenseal, slippery elm, burdock, manuka honey, ginger root, mastic gum and aloe vera juice. The use of proteolytic digestive enzyme supplements is by itself often very effective against any gastrointestinal infection. Caution: The long-term use of licorice could elevate blood pressure in some sensitive individuals. The glycyrrhetinic acid component of licorice is what is responsible for this potential side effect. The best way of getting around and still taking advantage of licorice’s ability to protect the gastrointestinal lining from acid irritation is to use deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). Many herbal brands manufacture DGL, a supplement widely available at most health food stores. The four-herb combination of burdock, slippery elm, Turkish rhubarb and sheep sorrel (a.k.a. Essiac) is effective for a wide range of gut problems including hiatal hernia, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, non-specific indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and bowel infections. It can be used alone or in combination with DGL, aloe vera juice or prescription medications in more resistant cases. Check with your doctor or naturopath for a personalized treatment regime.

all-time greats. The statement of his that I most remembered was:“For every drug that benefits a patient, there is a natural substance that can achieve the same effect.” — Pfeiffer’s Law Although I have mainly focused this article on PPIs and their safer alternatives, there exist safe and effective natural alternatives to all the drugs listed earlier that are most frequently prescribed for seniors in long-term care facilities. If only more of these were used, the incidence of pneumonias that include COVID-19 infections would likely be significantly reduced. There is much scientific evidence for this but it has been largely ignored. There is definitely a place for prescription drugs in the treatment of chronically ill seniors, but it is an overused way of dealing with health concerns. It’s time to listen to and apply the alternatives. Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, MD, practises Complementary Medicine in Thornhill and is the medical editor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Healing. VITALITY MAGAZINE – FALL 2020
Fan Letter from a Happy Reader I was delighted to find your Summer edition at a local health food store this morning. I hadn’t expected that you would have continued publishing during this pandemic shutdown... thank you for doing your essential work... it’s especially essential after I’ve read Shawn Buckley, Andrew Saul, and Julia Woodford's comments in this issue regarding current censorship. I just registered for your digital subscription so I won’t miss your publishings in future. I also wish to request the links to your April and May newsletters, at your convenience. Again, thank you for your vital work (pun not intended), but yes, your work is vital in more ways than one! With deep appreciation, B. Power, Thornhill
Dear Barbara, Thank you for your very kind words. Your encouragement means a lot. Here is a link to all of our newsletters: https://tinyurl.com/linktoVit alitynewsletters Staghorn Sumac: Herbal Remedy for Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Colitis
Re: https://vitalitymagazine.com/ article/staghorn-sumac/ article by Michael Vertolli, RH
Thank you for the article on sumac. I just went for a nice trail ride yesterday, and cut four stalks of this plant, my native Canadian plant. I made a nice cold drink from it. I’ll try a tea later. I’m going to get more today. I also found in another area, lots of wild raspberries! I’m lucky to live in Oshawa, Ont. where it’s possible to forage for wild things. L. Voldenberg Hello L, Indeed this is the perfect time of year for harvesting
staghorn sumac. The best way is to cut it off at the base of the ‘fruit’, and place it in a glass jar. Pour boiling water over and let it steep for an hour or two. Then strain it through cheesecloth to remove the fine hairs, and add honey to taste. It’s a wonderfully tart and refreshing drink, hot or cold. Julia Woodford
Recipe: Glaze for Lentil Loaf
https://vitalitymagazine.com/article/marvellous-meatless-meals/
I read with great interest the recipe for “Glazed Vegetable Lentil Loaf ” in the latest issue of Vitality but looked in vain for the ingredients for the glaze that is used on top of the Loaf. The ingredients don’t appear in the recipe. Would you be able to send it to me as I could not find this recipe in your archives either. Thanks, Betsy Dear Betsy, So sorry, it was entirely our fault that the Glaze information was left out of the Lentil Loaf recipe. Here it is, by Linda Gabris: To prepare the glaze: 2 Tbsp of ketchup 2 Tbsp of sweet chili sauce 1 Tbsp of honey 1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar 1) In a small bowl, combine ketchup, sweet chili sauce, honey, and vinegar. Mix well. 2) Spread the glaze on the www.vitalitymagazine.com
loaf, and bake 45 minutes at 375F, or until firmly set. Let stand 15 minutes before slicing. (Ed note: For the complete Lentil Loaf recipe, go to: https://vitalitymagazine.com /article/marvellous-meatlessmeals/)
Selenium Aids Immunity to Ebola and Other Viruses
https://vitalitymagazine.com/article/woodford-files-our-bestadvice-on-coronavirus/
In my view, the answer to COVID-19 comes from Ebola virus. The reason is the trace mineral selenium. The diet of the people in West Africa who are immune to Ebola is very high in nuts which are the most potent source of selenium. In 2015, a Harvard researcher showed how the correct level of serum selenium absolutely inhibits a virus’ ability to infect the host cell by inhibiting the critical first bond the virus has to make with the host cell. This inhibition is chemical in nature and no resistance is possible to this. It is suggested that this inexpensive and readily available food supplement can be an ultimate inhibitor of Ebola and other enveloped viral infections. J. Sexton, Glastonbury Eng. tions” box on your website, the results almost never come up with an answer that in any way resembles the question asked. Yet, as a Vitality reader for as many years as Helke Ferrie has been writing for you, I know that the answers are in many back issues of the magazine! This is terribly frustrating as Vitality contains so much vital information and has for a long time, been my go-to for reliable health info. Yours truly, Sylvie P. Dear Sylvie, Yes you’re right that our search engine is finicky. But here’s the trick: don’t put long phrases into the search engine, because it gets confused. Just put in one or two key words to get best results. For example, instead of putting “homeopathy to improve symptoms of depression” just put “homeopathy for depression” into the search box. Hope that helps.)

Path of the Eagle and Condor The first path, the Eagle, was based on making strategic decisions, focusing on development of technology and industry, using aggressive measures to promote change and develop the mind to its greatest potential. This path reflected, and was born of, primal male power activated through brute strength and the desire for evolution. The second path, the Condor, focused on using inner wisdom, following the heart, and acknowledging the interconnectedness of community. It was the way that accepted and guided all people and promoted unity of the Tribe. The way of the Condor was believed to reflect the power and loving nature of Sacred Mother Energy. It was thought by many that the path of the Eagle would be most powerful and successful because it was industrious and cunning. This belief prevailed for many seasons as great change and progress were achieved. Although the power and 38

he Indigenous Amazonian prophecy of the Eagle and Condor speaks of a time when all people walked together as one. There was one language spoken, and one lens through which each person could see their path. This was a time of great peace, and the interconnectedness we shared was honoured and nurtured. After many moons, there was a restlessness that came over some of the people. They wanted to see change and explore the depths of their abilities. This marked the time when we began walking two separate paths.
value of the path of the Eagle was clear, it came at a price. As more people continued to walk this path, an imbalance in the connection between the mind and heart manifested so that the thoughts and logic of the mind outweighed the needs and wisdom of the heart. This imbalance created separation between what we felt in our hearts and what we perceived as real. It also blocked our ability to access our inner wisdom and nourish our spiritual fortitude. Today this fight between our heart and mind lives inside us, throwing us out of balance daily. When we are met with life challenges, we need to access our inner wisdom and the Creator Energy within us, the part of us that trusts what we are feeling inside, and that trusts the unseen. When this access is disabled, the negative experience of our struggles and challenges is amplified since all we can do is react with nervous responses.
Connecting with Our Heart Medicine Recently, many of us have been affected by COVID-19. It has had a profound impact on our life cycle as we walk around the Medicine Wheel. It has brought sickness, isolation, financial strain, loss of loved ones, and uncertainty as it has blocked our ability to see a clear vision for the future. Spiritually, this is an opportunity to re-assess our relationship with our Self, with each other, with this world, and with trust in the unseen. Our perceptions and feelings about our life circumstances reflect the health of these relationships, as well as the integrity and consistency of our ability to stay centered and connected to our heart. Feeling powerless creates veils of illusion: I can’t escape; I’m not safe; I’m separate; I’m abandoned; or I’m alone. These veils of illusion cause feelings of paralysis, fear, anger and resentment. As we continue www.vitalitymagazine.com
to be influenced by these veils, we begin to attract hucha or negative energy. Hucha is defined as the energetic manifestation of all the negative thoughts we have about ourselves and others. Hucha creates a web of heaviness that blocks our ability to free our emotions so we can generate positive feelings and create change. On the other hand, Medicine people know that the heart is our sacred organ of perception and the lens through which we need to see all things. Connecting with the world through our heart allows us to connect to our emotions, honour how we feel, and release negative emotions. Seeing with the eyes of our heart allows us to stay centered in our own knowing so that we don’t become lost in the chaos of adversity. The more consistently we can weave ourselves into the fabric of our Heart Medicine, the more effective we are at navigating situations that challenge our emotional health.
Ceremony to Release Hucha and Connect to Our Heart’s Wisdom Ceremony is a powerful way to honour the sacredness of a person, a moment, the spirit
or consciousness of Mother Earth, the elements, the cosmos or the Creator. It involves taking time to see beyond what can be seen and celebrating the oneness you share with it. It requires you to open your heart in earnest so you can truly feel and see with the eyes of your heart. Some Ceremonies involve using sounds, singing, chanting or dancing. Others involve giving offerings of gratitude or respect. Three-part ceremony:
1
Spiritual Breathing –
When we lack fortitude, stress and worry can become overwhelming. Indigenous people believe that our breath is what connects us to our inner Creator Energy and to the spirit of all living things. It contains our essence and power. If we do not breathe with the proper depth and quality, we become spiritually and physically sick. We are consumed by the chaos in our minds which, in turn, causes separation from the inner guidance of our heart and our connection to Mother Earth. We are no longer in balance since our breath has become entangled in our hucha. Our breath resides within us as a fluid part of our

innate intelligence. As we realign ourselves with our breath we are able to disentangle from our veils of illusion – fear, depression, hopelessness, and grief. There are four centres that connect us to our breath. These act as bridges between our spiritual heart and this world: The soles of both feet (1 & 2); the base of the pelvic floor in your Medicine Bowl(3); our heart center (4). The steps: • Bring your breath and awareness to your heart space at the center of your chest. Breathe slowly for 3 minutes. • Then deepen your breath so it reaches down into the base of your Medicine Bowl. Breathe into your Medicine Bowl for 3 minutes. • Deepen your breath until it reaches the sole of your

right foot for 3 minutes. Then bring your breath to the sole of your left foot for 3 minutes. • Visualize bringing your breath up and down both legs from the soles of your feet up to the base of your Medicine Bowl for 5 minutes. • Breathe from the base of your Medicine Bowl up to your heart centre for 3 min. Observe the change in your body, mind and spirit and the sense of re-balancing you have achieved.
2
Gratitude – All ceremonies start with giving gratitude and feeling reverence for the blessings that touch our life. Our heart begins to awaken and fill with passion upon acknowledging our intention to bring our gratitude into practice. Creating a despacho as a
gift from the heart is a common South American Indigenous ceremony performed with the intention of giving thanks. Despacho items can include dried beans, seeds, flowers, leaves and other sacred items. The selected items are placed on a piece of paper or cloth which is folded and tied into a bundle. Great thought and care are put into this ceremonial ritual, and with practice one will receive insight as to what items are most sacred for each ceremony. If you choose to create a despacho, upon completion of it you can give a prayer of gratitude in silence. Take a moment to sit quietly and feel the gratitude with every part of your being. Feel joy fill your heart until your thoughts and perceptions begin to transmute from pat-
terns of hucha to a positive sense of wellbeing. When you feel ready, give your offering with an open heart. To complete your ceremony you can place the despacho on an altar, in fire, in the earth, or in water.
3
Water Healing – We are made of approximately 90% water and, as such, we are deeply connected to and affected by the spirit of Water. She is referred to as the Great Water Mother. As she lives within us, she nourishes, cleanses, and fortifies our body and spirit. She teaches us to reflect inwardly so we can cleanse what no longer serves us. We can invite her medicine to cleanse our cells of the fear and unforgiveness that are feeding our hucha. Cedar is one of the sacred living ener-
www.vitalitymagazine.com
gies used with water medicine for cleansing. It will bring your mind and heart back into balance through the release of emotional and spiritual toxins. Steps: Gather 10 cedar branches; give thanks to the cedar tree(s) from which you harvested the branches. An offering of tobacco given to the base of the cedar tree is common practice Add the branches to your tub then fill it with warm water. Your bath should be for 30 minutes. During your bath, ask the water medicine for cleansing of your fear or unforgiveness. Gently brush your skin while asking the cedar branches to wash away hucha. Give the Cedar back to Mother Earth after your ceremony is complete. The challenges we are facing during this cycle of intense change are spurring us to heal the imbalance between mind and heart so we can endure. Practising sacred ceremony helps re-entrain us back into the rhythm of our heart so we can connect to our inner wisdom, heal our relationship with ourself, release negative thought patterns and nourish our spiritual fortitude. This in turn will allow us to access our inner power to support self-care and manage our mental health and wellbeing. Whatever you do this fall, do it with the full truth of your being. Put yourself where it matters and fear not the ineptitudes of those who should know better. There are powerful breakthroughs, maybe a few breakdowns, that need to happen. What you need to do is show up. TAURUS: April 20 - May 20

SEPT: Love your people, all of them, at the Full Moon on the 2nd. The time to focus on loving one person comes after the New Moon on the 17th. Proceed with caution. OCT: The Full Moon on the 1st invites you to acknowledge that there is more to heaven and earth than you can imagine. Make room for the small stuff but no need to get anxious about it. Question authority at the New Moon on the 16th, at least to yourself. The time for action is not yet. NOV: The New Moon on the 15th is time for cooperation or conflict with someone you can’t ignore. You decide. At the Full Moon on the 30th look into what you own. GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
In a world gone and going mad, where might you fit? You, the teller of stories, a natural born shape-shifter. At this moment you are a kind of gatekeeper, a ferry-person whose awareness flickers in and out of realizations about inner and outer realities. What is your particular magic? Use it because you can be an agent of radical shift. Constant change opens you to your best self, or should we say selves? SEPT: The New Moon on the 17th asks for your intentions regarding your care and concern for the land you live on. It’s not that it belongs to you; more that it’s a fundamental part of your existence. 42

The pride of lions is no joke. Only you can determine if that pride is rooted in defensive arrogance or self-esteem and a generous heart. Make it your mission to inspire those around you: To step up to a world of right action rather than defensive reaction. SEPT: Celebrate in a low key if you must, all the wonders of this life that have supported you in the most mundane ways at the Full Moon on the 2nd. On the 30th, love beams at you in all creative endeavours. Don’t wait for others to encourage self-expression. Take a risk.

The Full Moon on the 30th opens the gates to all sorts of creative possibilities. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19
The weight of the world can exhaust and overwhelm, especially if it gets mixed up with the past. Watch out for overreactions in the present based on memories. Only you can evaluate what you can, must, and can’t do in the ever-present Now. We have never been here before. SEPT: At the Full Moon on the 2nd think about what you still have to learn. Sometimes the best way to do that is to teach. The New Moon asks you to take your excellence seriously and not to confuse it with perfection. OCT: Responsibility (or the escape from it) arises from the same place. A Full Moon on October 1st isn’t a case of either/or. More a time to step up to the plate. A New Moon on the 16th continues the theme: time to commit yourself to what you can and must do and be realistic about what you can’t. A second Full Moon on the 31st reminds you how intense you can be. Aim it at love, not obsession. NOV: A New Moon on the 15th was made to order if you’re looking to spend quality time with your people. Make an intention in that direction. A Full Moon on the 30th may seem a bit frivolous to you. Nobody is doing their job (properly). Best to step back and take it lightly. All things pass. www.vitalitymagazine.com
AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17
Words matter. They have a kind of substance that we sense but often don’t believe. The more mindful you are about how you use them – as either received or sent messages – the better. Don’t hit ‘send’ until you’re sure of what you want to say. Pay attention to your distractions. They matter too. Where the mind goes, energy follows. SEPT: On the 2nd, the Full Moon beckons to you with promises it can’t keep. Be slow on the uptake. The New Moon on the 17th ushers in a month of testing. All sorts of initiations are at hand. OCT: October 1st brings a Full Moon reminding you that on your path are many possibilities. The New Moon on the 16th asks you to choose one possibility and believe in it. Another Full Moon on the 31st shines some light on your true purpose – in case you were wondering what it might be. NOV: A New Moon on the 15th requires some serious intention toward aligning yourself with right effort, the kind that will lead you to the accomplishments of your dreams. At the Full Moon on the 30th, it’s an awesome time to kick back and have some fun. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19
We all want ‘more’ and ‘better’. It’s our nature as humans, maybe just as life forms. Gratitude must be practiced, fostered, cultivated. Maybe it should be the other way around but we don’t control that. It is what it is. Practice, as they say, like your hair is on fire. SEPT: Look up at the Full Moon on the 2nd and allow a conversation to happen. It may take until the New Moon on the 17th to know what you were talking about, and who you were talking to for that matter. This would be a good time to make an intention about relationships. OCT: The Full Moon on the 1st opens (again) the debate regarding trust and sharing. Don’t let this be dominated by fear of loss. The New Moon on the 16th requires intention regarding aspects of your life that need to be let go. Another Full Moon on the 31st shows you all about the meaning of life. Be receptive. NOV: The New Moon on the 15th opens doors to wisdom and deep learning. Be amazed. A Full Moon on the 30th shines a spotlight on your talent. Don’t be shy. Only you can do what you do. VITALITY MAGAZINE – FALL 2020
On August 22, Oliver Couto hosted the unveiling of a new mural that he designed for the Bee Shop at 1340 Bloor St. West in Toronto. Measuring 96 feet wide by 38 feet high, the mural was illustrated by Slavka Kolesar, and took about two months to create. This mural combines science, art and spirituality to tell the fascinating story of the honeybee. The mural’s centrepiece features Mother Earth with the zodiacal constellations as her tiara representing the cosmic consciousness of the feminine principle which the honeybee symbolically inspires. Her logo of La Belle et les Abeilles is French; the language of love, for beauty and the bee; the modicum of this honeybee-inspired version of Mother Earth. To see the mural for yourself while sampling and shopping the honey products offered by Oliver, visit The Bee Shop from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. You can also find them online at: www.thebeeshop.net, or call 1 855-414-BEES

YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR VISION ONLINE
by Tony Hornick In the Bible it is said that during the time of its writing, humans routinely lived from 100 to 800 years of age. Those writings convinced me to explore what foods they ate which helped them to live to those ages. My investigation brought me to a grain grown only in the hot countries. It is the mung bean. And now a new 9-page study published by scientists at the University of California indicates that this grain, which was grown by people in Biblical times, is likely what gave them the ability to live so many years. I have been eating sprouted mung beans for over 50 years. You can read about my experiences on my website at www.sproutgrower.com And believe me when I tell you that I seldom feel any pains or sickness in my body. I am now 91 years old. Furthermore, mung beans can be bought at farms in India and China for as little as 5 cents per pound in quantities. That could feed the world’s poor and underprivileged for practically nothing. Call me at: 1-905-6816908 (Burlington, Ont.) or see ad on page 47.
Welcome to a NEW online class to improve your vision which begins this autumn with an 8-week class series. Classes run from 6:30 to 8:30, from Thursday, Oct. 1 through November 19, 2020. This online class is modeled on the in-person classes and will use the same small group format with lots of individual attention. Natural Vision Education teaches you how your eyes, brain and mind can work together to create healthier eyes and clearer seeing. To accomplish these changes in vision we use Mindfulness of Vision, the Bates Method, Feldenkrais, and Sounder Sleep System™. Each week you experience new vision activities, and learn how to fit them into your personal lifestyle easily and comfortably. Learn at your own pace in a relaxed and fun atmosphere to acquire the skills that work for you personally. To find out more about how natural vision education works, or for a free phone consult, call Alexandra Hughes (416) 923-3893, email alexandra@awareness -matters.ca or visit www.awareness-matters.ca. www.vitalitymagazine.com

HELKE FERRIE
Healthy and eco-friendly laundry detergents (i.e. Nature Clean, Simply Clean, EcoMax, etc.) are available in health food stores. They are free of sodium lauryl sulfate and 1,4-dioxane, and are biodegradable so they don’t pollute our waterways. This recommendation to switch is now backed by more than 16,000 formal studies! s Organic baby food is now available in glass instead of plastic, fortified with essential fatty acids and B vitamins, and free of hydrogenated vegetable oils. s Protect against future diabetes by cutting out the soft drinks, refined sugars, and refined baked goods – as the WHO guidelines urge. s Make sure your dentist does not put carcinogenic and neurotoxic mercury amalgam into your child’s mouth – and have those fillings removed if needed. Refuse or remove any root canals. (See https://www. IAOMT.org). s Avoid the flu shot, due to its high mercury content. s Don’t use pesticides, especially not Roundup. Its
active ingredient, glyphosate, is now known as a carcinogen; it suppresses the detoxification enzymes of the liver’s cytochrome P450. (It also kills bees and butterflies.) Life survives our most enormous stupidities, misjudgments, and appalling acts of arrogance – at a horrendous cost, yet unstoppably so. May we take comfort in nature’s determined intelligence.
