At last, summertime is upon us and nature is basking in el sol. Everywhere you look, birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and trees are lush with green magic. In the spirit of the season, we at Vitality are feeling inspired to bring you some of nature’s most potent offerings in this issue – from yummy superfoods to natural drug alternatives to nutraceuticals for recovery from vaccine injuries. Specifically, our News & Notes section (page 4) carries research about blueberries for reducing the risk of dementia, amino acids for reversing macular degeneration, and an effective new protocol for helping vaccine-injured patients recover from neurological disorders, myocarditis, herpes, strokes, and more. This protocol includes selective administration of melatonin, vitamin C and D, quercetin, and drugs such as Ivermectin and Naltrexone. Created by the Frontline Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance, this protocol is exciting because Western medicine has thus far not been able to offer effective treatments for either vaccine injuries or Covid long-haul symptoms (which seem to have a lot in common). By the way, there are some excellent articles on strategies for recovery from longhaul Covid posted on our website. One of them has over 70 comments (interesting questions and answers). Also featured this month is a story on Pat Crocker’s top 10 favourite superfoods. From herbs to berries to chocolate and sea vegetables, these types of foods work to optimize well-being and nourish immunity. In fact, we feel that it would be wise to start stocking up on some of these valuable items, or at the very least start cultivating relationships with local suppliers and farmers and other sources. This could help to protect you from the possible supply chain disruptions, food shortages, and inflation that is predicted for the years ahead. Planting a garden is one good way to cultivate your superfood supply. Whether sowing seeds on a plot of land outside the city, or planting herbs in containers on a condo balcony, everyone can start to practice more self-sufficiency. To that end, we have included some good resources in our Community News section (page 30) to help you find organic plants, seeds, and expertise. Furthermore, we have an excellent Guide to Organic Farms posted on our website at https://vitalitymagazine.com/ annual-guide-organics/) And of course Vitality would not be complete without a contribution from Canada’s favourite wholistic physician. This month, Dr. Zoltan Rona, MD, shares two of the most common questions he gets from patients regarding drugs for lowering cholesterol and preventing osteoporosis. An expert in both prescription medication and nutraceuticals, Dr. Rona confirms that there are viable alternatives to drugs which carry none of the risks or side effects. If you have any comments or questions you can post them at the end of any article, all of which are posted on our website in

ZINC SUPPLEMENTS LOWER BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS: BEST IN OLDER PATIENTS WITH DIABETES
NEWS & NOTES
Research reports on Nutrition, Health & Anti-Aging
In a randomized placebocontrolled trial of 144 patients with Type 2 diabetes, researchers in Pakistan found that zinc supplements had a positive effect on blood glucose levels. Further, they found that patients in the older age group (51 - 70 years old) had a better response than their younger counterparts (30 50 years old). The researchers speculate that the older we are, the more zinc we need and the better we utilize it. Reported by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, April 2022; https://www.crnusa.org/ BLUEBERRY SUPPLEMENTATION IN MIDLIFE FOR DEMENTIA RISK REDUCTION
Late-life dementia typically develops over a period of many years beginning in midlife. Prevalence of metabolic disturbance also accelerates in middle age and is a prominent risk factor for dementia. Preliminary studies indicate that blueberry supplementation can improve cognitive performance and influence metabolism and brain function and

In a randomized controlled trial, researchers investigated the effects of daily blueberry supplementation in a middle-aged sample of insulin-resistant participants with elevated risk for future dementia. They enrolled overweight men and women, aged 50 to 65 years, with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and performed pre- and post-intervention assessments of cognition and metabolism and

exploratory measures of peripheral mitochondrial function. They observed improved performances for the blueberry group on measures of lexical access, p = 0.003, and memory interference, p = 0.04, and blueberry-treated participants reported reduced memory encoding difficulty in daily life activities, p = 0.03. The blueberry-treated group also exhibited correction of peripheral hyperinsulinemia, p = 0.04, and a modest trend for increased mitochondrial
uncoupling, p = 0.11. The cognitive findings indicated improved executive ability in this middle-aged sample. In addition, the changes in metabolic and bioenergetic measures imply potential mechanistic factors associated with anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin actions. The demonstration of these benefits in middle-aged individuals with insulin resistance and SCD suggests that ongoing blueberry supplementation may contribute to protection against cognitive decline when implemented early. by Jule Klotter While anecdotal reports cannot have the weight of controlled research, those reports often provide clues for new avenues of treatment that are later confirmed in large studies. In Vol. 2 of Dr. Zamm’s Medical Mysteries Series, Alfred V. Zamm, MD, shares his own experience after being diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). (Vol. 1, GERD: A Manganese Nutritional Deficiency, was

reviewed in Townsend Letter, Nov. 2021.) Degeneration of the macula, the area on the retina where sharp vision occurs, leads to vision loss. It has no known cure according to Zamm’s opthalmologist, although a combination of vitamins A, C, E, and a few other nutrients might help. Since he had already been taking vitamins for years, Dr. Zamm decided he was going to have to solve this mystery himself if he wanted to save his vision. He arbitrarily decided to take Lmethionine (500 mg / twice a day), a sulfur-containing amino acid that he had researched and used before, and kept track of his vision using the Amsler grid. L-Methionine is the precursor to L-cystine, which is precursor to the amino acid taurine. With methionine, the AMD symptoms largely resolved for about a year.
Then, whether it was because he had reduced his consumption of beef and pork (key sources of taurine) or because he was a year older, the symptoms began to return. Increasing the dosage of methionine did not help. While searching for alternatives, Dr. Zamm came upon veterinary research about cats (whose bodies cannot make taurine) that developed retinal degeneration and eventually went blind when placed on a taurine-free diet. If they were given taurine before retinal cells died, the cats’ vision would return. Dr. Zamm began taking 500 mg of taurine three times a day with meals. (He weighs about 170 lbs.) The taurine helped his “sick and dysfunctional” retinal cells recover but could not totally restore his vision: “...taking taurine in time was fortuitous in saving enough of my rescuable macular cells to produce an excellent result – but not a 100% cure.” In Macular Degeneration a Solution, Dr. Zamm also explains that heavy metal poisoning from mercury and

other toxic metals have a role in AMD. Heavy metals work to “disable enzymes that are involved in the metabolic conversion of sulfur-containing amino acids that product taurine.” He includes information about selenium, which is needed for several enzymes including glutathione peroxidase (detoxification). Other factors that can contribute to blurred vision include allergies, chemicals, hypoglycemia, and visual stressors such as reading small print on a computer. For those who like to dig deeper, Dr. Zamm has provided a list of research studies he found useful. This little layfriendly book highlights an amino acid that may be key to preserving vision. VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2022
by Shalini Mehta We are a family of three: myself, my husband, and our 17year-old daughter. I started following a vitamin regimen in 2015 when I was desperately seeking answers for my husband’s health after he went through a surgery. I knew that medication alone would not allow him to fully recover. On the other hand, my daughter experienced some horrendous side effects of the MMR vaccine. Finally, God heard my prayers and I happened to hear Andrew Saul in the Food Matters documentary.[1] His knowledge helped me to understand the importance of supplements of essential nutrients. It turned around my and my family's health. Then COVID-19 came to India, where I live. On the 20th of March, 2020, our country went for a complete lockdown. Just like everyone we didn’t know what this virus was and how it would impact the world health scenario. But I knew that my family and I were enthusiastic and devoted consumers of vitamins and minerals, even though it’s not easy to get supplements in India. In the meantime, I heard Dr. Thomas Levy talk about how vitamin C and hydrogen peroxide are helpful against COVID-19.[2] Also I heard Dr. Saul mention that vitamin C, selenium, vitamin D, vitamin A and zinc are important supplements for preventing COVID, and how in some countries intravenous vitamin C is being used to treat COVID.[3-10] We had already been taking these supplements since 2015. And we were also very particular about getting our vitamin D and zinc levels checked. Apart from these supplements, all three of us have been very particular about our health and life choices. We wear a mask while going out to the marketplace, sanitize our hands and use hydrogen peroxide in diluted form on everything that comes from outside in our home. All our vegetables are washed either in salt water or baking soda. We have stopped www.vitalitymagazine.com

going to crowded places. We put a shoe rack at the entrance of the house and to date we don’t wear outside shoes inside the house. We apply organic sesame oil to the inner lining of our noses twice a day. In Ayurvedic medicine, sesame oil is stated to be very beneficial to keep any airborne virus from going down the respiratory tract. We eat only organic, local, seasonal, home-cooked food and we are vegetarians. We exercise for half an hour, five times a week and are very active in our home chores. My husband is 53 years old and I am 49 years, and we don’t suffer from any co-morbidity. As a result of this simple yet effective protocol, none of us has been infected with COVID-19. But a big concern was vaccination. In December 2021 we noticed that even though the government of India was encouraging the public to get vaccinated, it was not compulsory. In my country, the government never forces people to do anything related to personal choice, allowing people to make their informed choices. But I was a little uneasy when I learned that vaccination was becoming compulsory in some countries. And in our country, some organizations without consent of the government made it mandatory for people to be double vaccinated, and barred entry of unvaccinated people into their premises. So, in March 2022, we were encouraged when some good Samaritan lawyers filed petitions in the Supreme Court of India requesting that vaccination should not be forced upon people and that the results of vaccine trials done in India should be made public. Based on this data, it should be a personal choice to get vaccinated, and using evidence, they proved in the court that vaccinated people were capable of spreading infections just as much as non-vaccinated people. They also brought forth the argument that the COVID vaccine had created some major challenges in people's health because the vaccine trials were not extensive and Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) was given injudiciously. On May 3, 2022 we woke up to the news that the Supreme Court of India had passed a judgement that vaccines should not be forced on people because Article 21 of our Indian constitution states ‘the right to life.’[11] The Court clearly stated: “With respect to bodily integrity and personal autonomy of an individual in the light of vaccines and other health measures introduced to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, we are of the opinion that bodily integrity is protected under Article 21 (Right to Life) of the constitution and no individual can be forced to be vaccinated.” Readers: For the complete list of references cited in this article, see the extended version posted at: https://tinyurl.com/HealthNews-June2022 This article was reprinted with permission of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service. NEW HOPE FOR VACCINE-INJURED PATIENTS – Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance Develops Groundbreaking Treatment Protocol
May 25, 2022 – Using the latest research, a team of leading physicians, scientists and clinicians have developed an effective treatment protocol that enables patients to recover from disabling side effects of COVID-19 vaccination. After several months of scientific investigation that included extensive literature review, clinical observation, and deliberations among more than a dozen world-leading physicians and medical scientists, the FLCCC has released its protocol to treat those suffering from side effects from the COVID-19 vaccines, a condition identified as “PostVaccine Syndrome.” The new protocol called I-RECOVER: Post-Vaccine Treatment, uses a combination of FDA approved medications and widely available supplements to treat the growing number of patients suffering from a wide range of symptoms following COVID-19 vaccination. According to data recently released from Pfizer, approximately one to one and a half percent of COVID-19 vaccinations resulted in adverse medical events during the company’s trial of the vaccine. Although published research shows that the limitation of the system underreports by approximately 30-fold [1], the U.S. government’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System shows that over 1.2 million adverse events associated with the vaccine have been reported (in the U.S.) since COVID-19 vaccinations became available to the public. Some of these events may have resolved with the patient having no further complications, but there is a growing number of patients presenting with chronic and sometimes severe symptoms that have unexplained origins. “We have been reviewing the data on patients suffering from a variety of health complications following COVID19 vaccination and there is no doubt that people are experiencing in some cases serious symptoms that until now, had no treatment,” said Paul Marik, MD, co-founder and chief scientific officer of the FLCCC. More details about the IRECOVER: Post-Vaccine Treatment protocol can be found here: https://covid19criticalcare.com/covid-19-protocols/irecover-post-vaccine-treatment/ [1] Rose J. A report on the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) of the COVID-19 messenger ribonucleic acid 9mRNA) biologicals. Science, Public Health Policy, and Law 2021; 2:59-80.
About the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance The FLCCC Alliance was organized in March 2020 by a group of highly published, world renowned critical care physicians and scholars with the academic support of allied physicians from around the world. FLCCC’s goal is to research and develop lifesaving protocols for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in all stages of illness. Their MATH+ Hospital Treatment Protocol, introduced in March 2020, has saved thousands of patients who were critically ill with COVID-19. For more information: www.FLCCC.net www.vitalitymagazine.com

My Top 10 Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme....
Super Foods
Berries, Herbs, Spices and More... BY PAT CROCKER
W
hile many organic and natural plants could be considered as superfoods, it is handy to have a short list of must-have items that we know we can turn to for essential nutrients and maximum health benefits. The following list boasts foods that have been proven to offer vital phytonutrients that aid certain functions such as: – lowering or helping regulate blood sugar levels; – helping regulate metabolism and burn body fat; – helping protect the heart; – helping prevent cancer; – detoxifying vital organs; – lowering blood pressure; – preventing or reducing inflammation; – aiding digestion.
Healthy Superfoods
The daily choices we make have long-term effects on our health, and in order to begin to see the benefits listed above, you will need to include the following foods in your daily eating pattern. It’s time to ‘supercharge’ your diet by eliminating high-fat, low-nutrient foods, and replacing them with these superfoods every day: cruciferous vegetables, dark-skinned berries, alliums, herbs and spices, fatty fish, nuts, legumes, dark chocolate, seaweed, and seeds.
ALLIUMS (leeks, garlic, onions, and shallots): With garlic the hero of the bunch, alliums help to protect against prostate, stomach, and colon cancer. They also lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels; and provide antibacterial, along with other, benefits. Diet Advice: eat raw garlic once a day and include one other allium in. HERBS AND SPICES (thyme, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, cayenne, and cinnamon): Most fresh green herbs have antioxidant properties, along with other healing benefits specific to the herb; dandelion (slightly bitter) and burdock leaves (very bitter) are cleansing; spices contain powerful phytonutrients that regulate and affect body functions. Diet Advice: Eat fresh green herbs with two meals each day and cook with fresh ground spices (season dishes with 1 tablespoon Spring Seasoning Paste, recipe next page) every day. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES – (brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli rabe): These contain a powerful range of disease fighters. Endoles and sulforaphane may increase enzymes that lower the incidence of colon and lung cancers. Diet Advice: eat these foods raw, lightly steamed or stir-fried, at least three times per week; every day is ideal.
DARK SKINNED BERRIES (blueberries, blackberries, and acai berries): High concenFATTY FISH (especially wild salmon and trations of anthocyanins and phenolic pigsardines): Wild-caught fish eat krill and ments (making them dark blue, red, or purple other wild foods that contribute to the qualin colour) give them exceptional antioxidant, ity of their flesh. They are also lower in anti-diabetic, and heart-protective propA Home Economist, Culinary Herbalist, mercury and high in vitamin D. Wild erties. Diet Advice: include raw (fresh or and award-winning author, Pat Crocker salmon is one of the best sources of frozen) dark-skinned berries at least has written 23 herb/healthy cookbooks omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid farmed fish once daily in meals. 10

that may have been fed grain and antibiotics. Diet Advice: Eat fatty fish twice a week. SEAWEED (arame, hijiki, kelp, kombu, nori, and wakame) detoxify the body and help prevent assimilation of heavy metals. May have anti-cancer effects, and individual seaweed varieties have varying levels of calcium, iodine, potassium, and iron. Diet Advice: Eat seaweed once or twice per week and eat kombu raw (crushed and sprinkled over breakfast cereals, salads, and main course dishes) every day. NUTS (walnuts and almonds) are great sources of antioxidants, vitamin E, selenium, and magnesium. And of all nuts, walnuts are highest in alpha-linolenic omega-3 fatty acids, which lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. LEGUMES (dried peas, beans, and lentils) are good plant proteins, high in fibre and associated with lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Diet Advice: Eat legumes three times per week, more often if you are vegetarian/vegan. DARK CHOCOLATE (70% cocoa or higher) is high in antioxidants for anti-aging, flavonoids that prevent clogged arteries and lower blood pressure, and magnesium. Diet Advice: Indulge in one small square of the best quality dark chocolate every day. SEEDS (flax, chia, pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds): Sesame seeds enhance absorption of vitamin E and help lower cholesterol; pumpkin seeds contain beta-sitosterol that offers some benefit for prostate hyperplasia (BPH); and sunflower seeds help lower cholesterol and may lower the risk of heart disease. Diet Advice: Eat 2 to 3 Tbsp seeds (whole sesame seeds if you can find them; pumpkin seeds if you are male) every day. Continued on next page

On January 19, 2011, numerous media outlets reported on a study concluding that there was insufficient eviOmega-3 oils dence to recommend the widespread prescription of prevent abnormal statin drugs (e.g. Lipitor, Crestor, etc.) to people who blood clotting and had elevated cholesterol levels but no previous history reduce the risk of of heart disease. In other words, there is no scientific heart disease evidence that the lowering of blood levels of cholesterol will actually prevent heart disease in healthy people. According to the 2011 study results, researchers (the Cochrane Heart Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, UK) stated: “It is not as simple as just extrapolating the effects from studies in people who have a history of heart disease. DIET – The so-called Ape Man Diet (primarily vegan as demonstrated by what gorillas eat) has been demonstrated to lower cholesterol as efficiently as a statin. But can we really eat like apes? If you cannot fancy yourself as an ape, at least try to consume two or more servings of each of the following proven cholesterol-lowering foods every day: • Organic fermented products like tempeh and miso contain saponins which prevent the absorption of excess cholesterol from the gastrointestinal tract. • High pectin fruits like pears, apples, grapefruit and oranges also prevent cholesterol absorption. And drinking pomegranate juice lowers cholesterol because of its antioxidants and polyphenols. • Garlic, onions, carrots, walnuts, almonds, oat bran cereal, milled (ground) flax seed, as well as seaweed products like kelp, dulse and kombu work to lower cholesterol via their content of fibre, antioxidants and trace minerals.

SUPPLEMENTS – Lowering cholesterol with these remedies can take three months or longer to achieve. Unlike drugs, side effects of such products are minimal: • Soluble fibres like psyllium, guar gum and pectin – 15 grams or more daily • Milled flax seed – 15 grams or more daily • Curcumin (1,000 mg, 3 times daily) is strongly antiinflammatory and liver protective. Timed release forms of niacin may cause less flushing. • Inositol hexaniacinate (600 – 1800 mg daily) – This is a compound of niacin and inositol which does not produce flushing or liver toxicity but costs at least three times more than regular niacin. • Tocotrienols (600 mg or more daily) – This is a form of vitamin E originating from rice bran oil which blocks the cholesterol synthesizing enzyme in the liver. Most vitamin E complex formulae include tocotrienols. • Vitamin C (3,000-6,000 mgs) – lowers cholesterol, and regenerates and reactivates vitamin E. Vitamin C protects the body from oxidant stress, thereby lowering cholesterol. • Beta Sitosterol (500 mg daily) – Over 50 human and animal studies since the 1960s, published in scientific journals, show that beta-sitosterol has a powerful hypocholesterolemic effect in humans. It has a similar chemical structure to cholesterol. Beta-sitosterol interferes with cholesterol absorption, which prevents the rise in serum cholesterol. In one study (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) there was a 42% decrease in cholesterol absorbed when taking beta-sitosterol before eating scrambled eggs. Beta-sitosterol is also believed to reduce serum cholesterol by inhibiting the intestinal re-absorption of circulating cholesterol, which is secreted in the bile.[4] • Berberine (1,000 mg, 3 times daily) – This is an extract of several herbs used for their antibiotic properties as well as cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering ability. The extract also has antioxidant benefits. • Artichoke leaf extract (1,000 mg, 3 times daily) works to enhance bile acid production by the liver from cholesterol. • Guggulsterone (1,000 mg daily) – This is a resin from the Commiphora muku tree with antioxidant properties. With a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine it is able to lower cholesterol by regulating bile metabolism. • Ferulic acid (1,000 mg daily) – lowers cholesterol by an 18

as-yet-unidentified mechanism; it’s a strong antioxidant. • Green tea extract (Theaflavin) (500 mg, 3 times daily) – a polyphenol derived from catechins found in green tea that has both cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant effects. • Red Yeast Rice (1,000 mg twice daily) – If you are between 50 and 75 years old and have proven coronary artery disease or have had a heart attack, you may want to take this natural statin as an anti-inflammatory preventive remedy. Side effects are minimal according to a 2005 study. It has correctly been pointed out to me that Red Yeast Rice contains lovastatin, identical to the active ingredient of most statin drugs. The difference between Red Yeast Rice and the drug versions is that the natural product is complexed with nutrients that dilute the harmful side effects. It is actually a whole food. While it is still possible to react adversely to Red Yeast Rice, reactions are far less severe and typically, rare. I would use it as a drug alternative for confirmed heart disease cases or those for whom other measures have failed. Drugs Don’t Build Bones – Nutrients Do Question: Dear Dr. Rona: I read some of the articles you have posted on your website. The one about Fosamax was especially illuminating because it was directly connected to my own experience with the drug. Several years ago, when Fosamax was newly approved for use in Canada, my well-meaning GP prescribed it to me. I followed all the ‘terms of use’ religiously, but after seven months I developed a severe pain in my esophagus. So I stopped taking the drug. The symptoms persisted for a number of months after discontinuing the

Fosamax, until the esophagus lining healed. Ever since this experience I refuse to take any ‘wonder drugs’ and rely on exercise to do what I can to keep my bones relatively strong. Since I live in the country I garden all the time when the ground is not frozen, including lots of digging. And I walk in the winter. I am 68 years old now and do not claim that my bones are perfect, but (touch wood) I have not broken anything yet. Being a slightly built Caucasian female, I guess I am in a high risk category for osteoporosis, but this purported [Fosamax] ‘cure’ is more frightening. Are there any natural alternatives? Regards, B. Spencer Answer: Dear B. Spencer: I’m sorry to hear that you had such a bad result from using Fosamax. At some time in the future, I expect drugs like it to be banned as a result of all the unacceptable side effects. The use of these drugs reminds me of the high-dose fluoride drugs for osteoporosis that were heavily prescribed by the medical profession in the 1970s. These too were eventually banned as a result of toxicity. Weight bearing exercise is indeed beneficial in boosting bone mineral density. I am also increasingly recommending a mineral supplement called strontium for all my osteopenic and osteoporotic patients. Most of these people either cannot tolerate the prescription drugs typically used to prevent hip and spine fractures, or are too frightened of side effects like stomach upset and jaw bone disintegration caused by the commonly prescribed medications collectively known as the bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Actonel, etc). Since I’ve started recommending strontium in my practice, I routinely see 5% to 10% improvements in bone density in patients who take it for a year. This is without any of the usual drugs prescribed for osteoporosis with their attendant side effects. Not to be confused with radioactive (and toxic) Strontium90, the nutritional version of strontium can be taken safely and without concern for the long term. In fact, strontium supplementation actually removes radioactive strontium from the body if it is present in any significant amounts. The availability of strontium from food depends entirely upon the content of strontium in the soils of the areas where the fruit or vegetable is grown. As such, food is an unreliable source of this mineral. Strontium works by drawing more calcium into the bones, enhancing bone density. Studies conducted at McGill University in the 1980s, as well as numerous studies from around the world in the past three decades, confirm the bone building (as well as the fracture preventive) properties of strontium. Another remarkable benefit of strontium supplementation is pain relief and remineralization in bones affected by cancer metastasis, something that occurs with advanced breast or prostate cancer. Strontium supplements also reduce the incidence of dental cavities and improve cartilage metabo20

lism in osteoarthritis. Research indicates that the optimal therapeutic daily dose of strontium supplements is 680 – 1,000 mg. Strontium should be taken on an empty stomach at least 3 hours away from any calcium supplements because calcium impairs strontium absorption. Most of the recent research has used strontium ranelate, but similarly good results can also be achieved with the gluconate, citrate, lactate and carbonate salts of strontium. As always, check with a natural health care practitioner before taking large doses of any nutrient supplement. REFERENCES Dean, W. The Role of Spirituality in Health
Honouring Our Symptoms as Messages From the Soul
S
ociety is finally realizing that there is more to us than just our bodies. Indeed, it’s our thoughts and attitudes that determine the very structure and health of our bodies. We are spiritual beings. And the body is the foundation for our spiritual growth. The creative spirit is in all. Spiritual growth means becoming more and more aware of the connectedness of all creation. The more we clear our negative beliefs and memories, the freer we are to experience the beauty all around us, and the freer we are to let our natural way of being express itself in the world. Our innate nature is to express love and acceptance to all. Spirituality is a process wherein we learn to express all we can be. Within that definition, then, everything we do, everything that happens to us, becomes an avenue for personal growth. We generally view illness as meaning that there is something wrong with us. But what would happen if we viewed illness differently –

The more we clear our negative beliefs and memories, the freer we are to experience the beauty all around us as our spirit expressing itself in a way we cannot ignore? With this perspective, we can find real meaning in our symptoms.
Symptoms as Messages from the Soul We are composed of four dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. All are connected. Change one and the others adjust to maintain equilibrium. The physical aspect is the
VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2022
most dense. We can see our bodies, whereas the other aspects we experience in more abstract ways. We feel them. Our feelings are quicker, more adaptable than our bodies. Changing beliefs can happen over time, or in an instant. What’s required is diligence and awareness of what we truly believe. The unconscious has to become conscious, and consciousness has to be challenged if the belief is not supportive of
a healthy life. Spirit is pure energy, and therefore very flexible, very quick to change and adapt. Feelings are felt directly in the body. Beliefs drive our actions. Together, feelings and beliefs create the life we live. However, beyond our physical, mental, and emotional aspects is our spiritual aspect. Spirituality is at the heart of who we are. It’s that inner drive or passion that keeps us striving to be more, to be the best we can be. It’s what pushes us to keep striving towards our goals in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. We all want happiness, inner peace, and soul fulfillment. Yet our decisions and choices may not always lead us in the direction of fulfillment. We were all born with open hearts, but that openness inevitably caused us to be hurt. To protect ourselves from even more hurts, we closed our hearts to varying degrees. Now, as adults, keeping our hearts closed is what causes us hurt. Our bodies are like filing cabinets, with our whole history stored in our cells. Where we store negative memories, we hold tension, blocking energy from flow-

ing freely through the body. Over time, the blockage of trapped energy may become chronic pain or manifest itself in physical symptoms. These symptoms in the body arise from our spirit expressing dis-ease about some aspect of life that we may need to adjust or bring back into alignment to get back on track.
Finding Meaning In Our Illnesses What if we could accept the outer, external part of ourselves as a mirror image of what is happening internally? For example, when we are upset or suffering, we tense up our muscles around the pain. To help release that tension, we can learn to be aware of what is happening within ourselves. When the
www.vitalitymagazine.com
body can release the tension, we are able to expand our capacity to take in new life energy. An opening occurs. Perhaps we feel this as a lightness, perhaps as a change in perspective around a past or present situation. From there, we can choose to ignore our new understanding and go back to the old way of viewing the experience, or we can see how traveling through the painful journey has made us strong in some way, taught us a valuable lesson. Then we can release the negative tensions and beliefs around it. We are then released not only from the past, we are freed in this present moment. Our decisions and ideas can be made with this new awareness. We have a chance to open our hearts and live

life by letting the love flow to self and others. We are no longer victims of the past. We have had a healing on all levels of our being.. Then, rather than judging illness as physical imperfection or weakness, we could explore the question: What is this experience trying to tell me about my life? Perhaps we say “yes” in situations where we’d rather say “no”? Perhaps we do things that we’d rather not do? The consequence could be mild twinges or stomach aches. These are subtle signs saying, “I’m upset.” We may ignore the signs or pop a pill to suppress the symptoms. But our spirit will not give up. The symptoms may become stronger or manifest in other ways if we continue to suppress them. We can ignore the signs of dis-ease – or we can begin to explore how to make changes so we can speak and act in alignment with what is important to us. To be healthy, we need to take this voyage of inner discovery. There is truth in the saying, “If you do not take time for health, you will take time for illness.” Even cancer may have a message for us. Cicely

The body wants to be healthy and whole. First, however, fear has to be released from the cellular memory for healing to occur. There is truth in the saying, “If you do not take time for health, you will take time for illness.” Saunders, who founded the hospice movement in England, said if she could choose, her death of choice would be by cancer because it allows one to say goodbye. Cancer also gives us a second chance to live the life we want to live, a chance to say, “It’s my turn now.” It may be an opportunity to discover what’s important to us if our tendency has been to always defer to the wishes of others. Viewing everything that happens within us as meaningful is a very freeing position from which to view life. Such a view doesn’t mean we’re helpless or hopeless. It means we’re becoming aware, asking ourselves: What lesson am I being presented with here? One masseur told the story
www.vitalitymagazine.com
of a client who was in a car accident. He had been thrown forward into the dashboard, and his thigh was damaged. Surgery was required. The injury was repaired, yet the pain would not go away, no matter what the person tried. The masseur asked the client if he had talked to his leg and explained what had happened. The man hadn’t considered doing anything so strange. As the masseur massaged the thigh, he told the man to describe to the area exactly what had happened, that it was an accident, and that the experience was over (so the leg didn’t have to remain “on guard” for the next assault). As the client talked, the whole area relaxed. The pain left, never to return. There are many similar stories. The body wants to be healthy and whole. First, however, fear has to be released from the cellular memory for healing to occur. If we can view life as presenting us constantly with only two choices, love or fear, then it is choosing fear that holds us back and causes us pain. Underneath the layers of “negative” emotions is fear. Choosing to
www.vitalitymagazine.com
shut down physically or verbally, rather than expressing what we are afraid of, blocks the energy flow. As we become more aware of our feelings and develop self-esteem, we can love ourselves enough to be more present in our bodies. We can learn to recognize what is happening in each moment and realize when we are shutting down our energy flow. Then we can choose a healthier option. This is the opportunity that illnesses give us – whether through simple aches or more serious issues. Illnesses can be the key to helping us unlock our potential to be all we are meant to be. This for me is the essence of why I do healing work: to help others get in touch with their own inner wisdom, their own healer. Others can assist us, but ultimately the decision to heal is our own. No one else can do it for us

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
• Confusion • Depression • Agitation • Appetite loss or gain • Impaired memory or concentration • Need for excessive sleep These symptoms can worsen with the slightest exertion. Further, it is important to differentiate CFS from the persistent fatigue that is felt by 20 to 50 percent of the population, in association with an unbalanced lifestyle or stress. TCM Approach to Treating Chronic Fatigue
Traditional Chinese Medicine for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome BY TOM FUNG, R.AC., R.TCMP
I
In my view, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a problem better treated by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) than by Western medicine. TCM practitioners believe that Qi deficiency (low energy) may trigger CFS, and low energy is in turn caused by energy stagnation. Further, its cause may come from internal injury (which I describe as “emotional distress”), from the seven emotions, or from an unhealthy lifestyle. I have traditionally used acupuncture and Chinese herbs to treat this disease, with good success. There is, however, no standard formula. The formulas listed below are primarily for use by Chinese herbal doctors, or someone with experience in using the formulas, because the symptoms can change and each individual’s condition is different. We need to accommodate the symptoms of each person we treat. Sometimes the dosage can be heavy, sometimes light. It is not a simple process. There are also some people who think all herbs are natural and have no side effects. This is incorrect because if the wrong formula is applied to the wrong situation, it will affect the disease and may even damage the patient’s health.
t is only in the last 10 years that Western medicine practitioners in North America and the UK have given recognition to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) – also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and postviral fatigue syndrome (PVFS). In the U.S. and Canada, many allopathic medicine practitioners believe that the cause for this syndrome is not clear. They implicate chronic stress, viruses, allergies, and hormonal imbalances as causative. Further, In my view, Chronic Fatigue this condition is easily confused with AIDS, mononucleosis, and other ailments. Syndrome is a problem better In the search for a specific cause of CFS, treated by Traditional Chinese many Western practitioners believed it to Medicine (TCM) strategies be a legacy of viral infections – hence, than by Western medicine PVFS. However, this is not necessarily the case; CFS can occur with no previous or obvious illness preceding it. Physical Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: • Debilitating fatigue lasting six months or more – it does not originate from exertion, and is not relieved by rest. • Sore throat • Low-grade fever • Swollen lymph nodes • Joint pain • Weak and aching muscles • Headache Psychological Symptoms for CFS Include:

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SUMMER 2022
TCM Classification of Chronic Fatigue Symptom Types According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, the sufferers of CFS present the following imbalances, individually or in combination. For example, kidney yin deficiency can also combine with spleen deficiency.
1) KIDNEY YIN DEFICIENCY – Symptoms include night sweats; thinning hair or hair loss; sore back; menstrual period disorder; ringing in the ears; abnormal tongue colour; fine, hollow and rapid pulse. Herbs for this deficiency are based on the Six Taste Formula – ingredients include Rhemania Root, Cornus Frui, Dioscorea Rhizome, Alisma Rhizome, Paeonia Root, Poria Fungus. The acupuncture point is Taixi stream point kidney, 3X2 needles with both sides, using the tonification method. www.vitalitymagazine.com
2) KIDNEY YANG DEFICIENCY – Symptoms include day sweats or automatic sweating; dislike of cold; weak back; no menstrual period, even a limited one; light tongue colour or an enlarged tongue. The herbal formula for kidney yang deficiency is Gold Cabinet Kidney Qui, and its ingredients are based on the Six Taste formula with two extra herbs – Cinnamon Bark, Aconite Carmichaeli Debx. This formula can also be used for a patient suffering from ACTH insufficiency, but without organic damage at the adrenal gland. The acupuncture point is the same as above, plus the Mingmen life door. No needles are used, just moxibustion. 3) LUNG YIN DEFICIENCY – Symptoms include dry cough; sore throat; afternoon fever; tongue and pulse symptoms similar to kidney yin deficiency. When the disease progresses, it will lead into kidney yin deficiency. The herbal formula for lung yin deficiency is also based on the Six Taste Formula with three extra herbs: Ningpo Figwort Root 5%, Fritillaria Cirrhosa D.Don 8 and Baical Skullcap Root 5%. The acupuncture point is the same as the one used in kidney yang deficiency, plus Xiabai lung 4X2 needles, using the tonification method. 4) LIVER DEFICIENCY – Symptoms include

Symptoms of kidney yin headache; joint pain; numbdeficiency include night ness of the four limbs; blurred vision, light period (by quansweats, thinning hair or tity or color); light tongue hair loss, aching lower colour; hollow pulse. back, menstrual period Herbs used for liver defidisorders, and/or ciency are based on the Four ringing in the ears Object Formula. I use this formula because it is the yin organ which stores two-thirds of the body’s blood. Whenever there is a blood deficiency, we can use this formula. Its ingredients are: Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, Ligusticum wallichii franch, Rehmania glutinosa (Gaertn.), Paeoniae Lactiflorae, Radix. The acupuncture points are Taichong liver 3X2 needles, and Sanyinjiao (3 negative joint), spleen 6X2 needles, using the tonification method.
5) SPLEEN DEFICIENCY – Symptoms include lack of appetite; stomach fullness; fatigue; perhaps a swollen face; light or white tongue colour; thin tongue coating; hollow pulse. Here we would use Four Gentlemen Formula, which contains Radix Ginseng, Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf, Atractylodes macrocephala koidz, Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice root). The acupuncture points are Yinlingquan spleen 9X2 needles, and Taichong liver 3X2 needles, using the tonification method. 6) LIVER STAGNATION – Symptoms can include irritability; frustration; quick to anger; heavy menstrual period; dull tongue colour; a wiry or tight pulse. Liver stagnation requires the Smooth Liver Formula. Its ingredients are: Paeonia Root, Amomum Fruit, Cardamon Fruit, Corydalis Rhizome, Citrus Peel, Saussurea Root, Magnolia Bark. The acupuncture point is Xingjian liver 2X2 needles, using the tonification method.

The Big Picture Our modern, industrialized and commercialized society, with little or no emphasis on physical movement, creates great mental pressure. It is up to each one of us to live life based on holistic concepts. Think of the big picture, and differentiate between essential and non-essential things to be accomplished. Then release the non-essentials. Achievement cannot be rushed; go forward with stable, steady steps as excessive stress can create imbalances that lead to health problems. Seek simplicity within a balanced lifestyle. As an individual does well, so do more people become well, and society as a whole will be well.
