Woodford Files OPINION
Happy spring! With 12 months of coronavirus chaos behind us, hopefully now we can turn toward a future filled with insights gleaned from the pandemic. One insight that arose from the overall pattern of Covid infections and deaths is that the “terrain theory” developed by scientist Antoine Bechamp (a colleague of Louis Pasteur) was probably right. Bechamp postulated that disease can only occur in a body whose terrain (cells, extracellular fluid, and blood) has been weakened by toxicity or other factors. This could explain why some people became seriously ill or died from the virus, and many more did not. According to Dr. Marika Geis, ND, at Prairie Sky Integrative Health, “The thinking basically goes... that the severity of the infection will correlate with the patient’s health status. In other words, the unhealthier the lifestyle, the more out of balance a body is, the more susceptible they will be to disease. Further, the disease will be much more severe in that person compared to a body that is physiologically stable and healthy.” (https://prairieskyhealth.ca/) With this in mind, there’s never been a better time to embrace Do-It-YourselfHealthcare. By tending to the garden of our inner terrain, we are better able to build a strong resistance to infectious microorganisms, and recover fast when they do invade. In addition to the excellent features he’s already written about Covid prevention and

treatment (now posted on our website), Dr. Zoltan Rona brings us a new feature on “DIY Healthcare” this month. In it, he offers six sets of remedies for six common health disorders. From glucosamine for arthritis, to CoQ10 for heart disease, to curcumin for cancer, Dr. Rona outlines the essential supplements that can be used at home to deal with illness and disease. These are things you will not learn about from conventional Western doctors because they lack the training in nutrition. So we are deeply grateful to Dr. Rona, a specialist in integrative and nutritional medicine, for sharing his expertise. And do keep in mind that all of our content is regularly uploaded to our website, where you can go to post comments, ask questions, or share articles on social media, and with friends and family. .............................................................. In regards to the question of how safe are the experimental vaccines coming at us these days, here are some sobering statistics shared by Children’s Health Defense: “The latest data made public by the [U.S.] Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) on deaths and injuries reported after COVID vaccines are in line with trends that have been emerging since the first data were released in December. Between Dec. 14, 2020 and Feb. 18, 2021, 19,907 reports of adverse events have been reported to VAERS, including 1,095 deaths and 3,767 serious injuries.” (For more info, visit https://childrenshealthdefense.org/) Those who wish to make an informed choice about vaccination in Canada may find it useful to review the stats posted on https://vaccinechoicecanada.com/ Julia W.

Melatonin synthesized in the lungs acts as a barrier against SARS-CoV-2, preventing expression of genes that encode proteins in cells such as resident macro-phages in the nose and pulmonary alveoli, and epithelial cells lining the alveoli, all of which are entry points for the virus. The hormone, therefore, prevents infection of cells by the virus and inhibits the immune response so that the virus remains in the respiratory tract for a few days, eventually leaving to find another host. The discovery by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil helps understand why some people are not infected or do not manifest symptoms of COVID-19 even when reliably diagnosed as carriers of the virus by RT-PCR. As well, it offers the prospect of nasal administration of melatonin, in drops or as a spray, to prevent disease from developing in presymptomatic patients. Clinical trials will be needed to prove the therapeutic efficacy of melatonin against the virus, the

Access to IntegrAtIve And complementAry medIcIne Under threAt In ontArIo – A cAll to ActIon
In early December of 2020, a significant change was proposed to Ontario’s health care system that will threaten the ability of hundreds of specialized medical doctors to provide their services to patients. The change is an update to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) policy on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). This update will introduce barriers which could prevent doctors from using many important life changing therapies to help their patients. The proposed change in policy would severely limit patients’ access to freedom of choice in health care because it directly overrules important parts of the Medicine Act of Ontario (section 5.1). Specifically, the change would allow the CPSO to pursue and penalize any physician who treats their patients with complementary or integrative medicine. And all non-pharmaceutical and non-conventional approaches will be considered as below the acceptable standard of care. Why is this important to all patients in Ontario? For anyone who suffers from a disease, condition, or illness for which they might seek a non-conventional approach, they will find their treatment options severely restricted if these changes by the CPSO are approved. That is why we are asking all Ontarians to act quickly and decisively in order to www.vitalitymagazine.com

preserve patients’ rights to freedom of choice in health care. The negative bias against Integrative Medicine is blatant in the proposed policy document (see https://tinyurl.com/cpsocomplementary). The document implicitly states that Integrative Medicine is unscientific and exploitive. The CPSO should represent the needs and values of patients. If the new CAM policy is approved by CPSO Council in the next few months, most of the doctors who provide integrative healthcare will be forced to change their practice or leave the province. This is an example of regulation that does little to promote patient safety but hugely impacts our access to healthcare.

Patients with More oMega-3s in Blood less likely to die froM Covid-19, study finds
By Hank Schulz, www.nutraingredients.com (Ed note: On January 6, 2021, the results of a pilot study were published on MedRxiv, the preprint server for health sciences.)
Study results showed that those with the highest levels of EPA and DHA in their blood were 75% less likely to die [from Covid] compared with those in the lower three quartiles
The pilot study was conducted using blood drawn from 100 patients treated for COVID-19 at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The blood was analyzed using the test developed by Omega-3 Index co-developer Dr. William Harris PhD of the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Harris, who is one of the paper’s co-authors, is also head of the Fatty Acid Research Institute based in Sioux Falls, SD and is founder of OmegaQuant which did the blood analysis. The 100 patients were grouped into four quartiles according to their 031, with an 031 of 5.7% being the cutoff for the highest quartile. The raw results showed that one patient in the highest quartile died, while there were 13 deaths among patients falling within the bottom three quartiles. After a regression analysis to correct for age and sex differences, those with the highest levels of EPA and DHA in their blood were 75% less likely to die compared with those in the lower three quartiles (p=0.07). Stated another way, the relative risk for death was about four times higher in those with a lower 031 (<5.7%) compared to those with higher levels. Lead author Arash Asher, MD, Director of Cancer Survivorship & Rehabilitation at Cedars-Sinai, said observers must keep the study’s limitations firmly in mind. But he said the results are strongly suggestive: “While not meeting standard statistical significance thresholds, this pilot study – along with multiple lines of evidence regarding anti-inflammatory effects of EPA and DHA – strongly suggests that these nutritionally available marine fatty acids may help reduce risk for adverse outcomes in COVID-19 patients. Larger studies are clearly needed to confirm these preliminary findings,” said Dr. Asher. The study is similar in nature to other preliminary research arising out of the COVID-19 crisis that suggests higher levels of vitamin D and zinc can help better arm individuals who are infected with the novel virus. In this case, the postulated mechanism of action is the well known anti-inflammatory role of higher omega-3 levels, which may help quell the so-called ‘cytokine storm’ or extreme immume system reaction, observed in some severe and/or fatal COVID-19 cases. Diabetes anD environmental toxins
by Jule Klotter, Townsend Letter Back in August 2016, Joseph Chemicals found in plastics, Pizzorno, ND, editor-in-chief including BPA and phthaof Integrative Medicine: A lates, as well as arsenic Clinician’s Journal, wrote an found in seafood, rice, editorial about the role of mushrooms, and poultry environmental chemicals in are all major contributors the 7-to-10-fold increase in to increased diabetes risk Type 2 diabetes over the past 50 years. While he agrees that obesity, lack of exercise, and sugar consumption are also factors, Pizzorno says the increase in sugar consumption, which started about 40 years before diabetes began to rise, does not correlate with diabetes incidence. Instead, he says that environmental chemicals found in food, air, and drinking water – sometimes called obesogens or diabetogens – are the main cause. In researching this topic, Pizzorno found that people with the highest body load of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as PCBs, DDE, and hexachlorobenzene, have the greatest risk of diabetes – regardless of body mass. Obese people with low POP levels do not have an increased risk of diabetes while thin people with high POP levels do. These pollutants are among those that impair insulin sensitivity and/or decrease insulin production. In his article, Pizzorno focuses on seven types of diabetogens: arsenic, bisphenol A (BPA), dioxins, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): – Arsenic and chemicals in plastics appear to be the most problematic. Arsenic damages pancreatic β cells, decreasing insulin production. In many areas of the US, drinking water has arsenic levels that exceed the EPA limit (10 μg/L). High arsenic levels have also been found in seafood, rice, mushrooms, and poultry. – Chemicals in plastics, including BPA and phthalates, are also major contributors to diabetes risk. BPA is used to make plastic water bottles, the inner linings of food cans, implanted medical devices, and other polycarbonate plastic items. BPA causes insulin resistance by blocking insulin receptors, resulting in visceral fat accumulation as well as increased diabetes risk. – Phthalates, also used in food packaging, increase plastics’ flexibility, transparency, and durability. These chemicals readily contaminate foods they contact, particularly foods that contain fats – such as milk, cheese, butter, and meat. Grease-resistant packaging used by fast-food restaurants and to make pizza boxes and microwave popcorn packaging is another source of these chemicals. In March 2020, Environmental Health published a consensus statement from an international group of scientists stating that chemicals in packaging, kitchen utensils, tableware, and food processing equipment need to be better regulated because these chemicals do leach into food and drinks and 12

only a few have been investigated for health effects. Dr. Pizzorno says that conventional laboratory tests, particularly GGT (aka GGTP) for measuring γ-glutamyl transferase, can indicate whether chemical load is a factor: “This enzyme recycles glutathione for detoxification of POPs and is induced in proportion to exposure.” He refers to a four-year study in which increased GGT correlated with increased risk of diabetes. (Lee et al. Diabetologia. 2003;46(3):359-364). Measuring arsenic content in toenail clippings is the best way to assess body load of this metal: “Blood and urine levels typically only indicate acute exposure.” Avoidance tops the list of Dr. Pizzorno’s strategies for reducing toxic load. Increasing glutathione production (to facilitate phase 2 detoxification and help protect from oxidation) and increasing dietary fibre that binds to the chemicals so that they can be excreted are also essential. Dr. Michelle Perro presents a case history in this month’s “Pediatric Pearls” column that illustrates the use of these strategies for reversing Type 2 diabetes in a teenager. In a 2019 podcast with Ari Whitten, Dr. Pizzorno says that diabetes is not the only disorder tied to environmental chemicals. Fluorinated hydrocarbons in Teflon-coated pans, GORE-TEX clothing, and Scotchgard carpet and furnishings increase uric acid levels, which leads to gout.

Considered by most lawn lovers as a nuisance, dandelion is appreciated by wild food connoisseurs – not only as a delicious, readily available salad green and potherb, but also as a proven tonic for cleansing the liver (just like stinging nettles). Greek Dandelion Salad~ by Linda Gabris (Serves 6) Dandelions are always delicious in the salad bowl – you can toss them with any “house” dressing, or make them into traditional salads such as a Caesar or Waldorf, or go Greek as I have done with this favourite recipe.
Salad Ingredients: 6 cups torn dandelion leaves 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, sliced in Stinging Nettle Bouillon halves Greek Dandelion Salad This is a light, nourishing soup. ½ cup pitted sliced black olives (Makes 4 bowls) 1 cup chopped peppers (red, yellow, and/or green) 3 cups broth of your choice (vegetable, chicken, wild game, 1 red onion cut into thin slices and separated into rings or miso) 1 cup crumbled feta cheese (or non-dairy alternative) 1-1/2 cups young stinging nettle shoots, washed Salt and Pepper (optional) Dressing Ingredients: 1) If you are using miso, do not bring to a boil, just heat it 4 Tbsp virgin olive oil and add the other ingredients, keeping it at low temperature 2 Tbsp white wine vinegar to let the ingredients warm and meld. Otherwise, in a 2 Tbsp liquid honey saucepan bring broth to a boil, reduce to simmer, and add 2 tsp fresh chopped oregano (or dried herb) nettle shoots. Dandelion Supper Soup ~ by Linda Gabris Here’s a hearty soup that fills the belly after gathering your woodland fare. Serve it as a first course or load up the bread basket and call it the “full meal deal.” 4 cups dandelion leaves (picked wild or store-bought) 4 Tbsp olive oil 4 cloves minced garlic 1 minced onion 3 chopped potatoes 3 cups vegetable broth Salt and pepper to taste 2 cups milk (low fat or soy milk works great) 1) Heat the oil in a soup pot, sauté garlic and onions until soft. Add potatoes, vegetable broth, and dandelion leaves. 2) Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until potatoes are soft. Remove from heat. 3) Purée the mixture in batches using a blender. (Grandma forced hers through a sieve, but the blender makes a smoother soup.) 4) Return mixture to pan. Add milk and seasonings and heat through. The yellow petals of a dandelion flower make a pretty scatter for the top of the soup. Garlic Roasted Asparagus ~ by Julie Daniluk, RHN This recipe is excerpted from the food feature entitled “The Ketogenic Diet”, currently posted on Vitality’s website at: https://vitalitymagazine.com/article/the-ketogenic-diet/ Succulent and tender asparagus is one of the most detoxifying items in the produce aisle. Eat it raw when you’re feeling bloated – it’s a natural diuretic. (Makes 8 servings) 2 lbs fresh asparagus, ends trimmed, rinsed, patted dry 3 Tbsp coconut oil 1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ tsp pink rock or grey sea salt, more to taste 1 Tbsp organic lemon juice, more to taste 1) Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large glass baking dish, toss the asparagus with the coconut oil, garlic, and salt. 2) Bake until the asparagus is tender-crisp, about 20 minutes. Stir gently at the 10-minute and 15-minute mark. 3) Remove from the oven and toss with the lemon juice. Adjust the salt or lemon, if necessary. Serve warm or at room temperature. hanks to the fear created by the pandemic, fewer and fewer people are visiting doctors’ offices. In fact, many doctors have closed their offices for months on end and are only doing virtual consultations – if any at all. Between the estive heart failure, and overworked staff and the coronary artery disease plethora of germs flying about, it’s no wonder that the public is turning to self-care in droves. So what can you do safely and effectively on your own if the medical system is not easily available? Here are the top six sets of natural remedies and strategies that I believe can be used at home to alleviate the six most common health problems.
Arthritis There are many forms of arthritis, but the type that most people acquire with age is the wear-and-tear type called osteoarthritis. X-rays and clinical presentation are the ways in which this form is diagnosed. As with any chronic condition, optimizing the diet is a large part of treatment success. Food intolerances, individual likes, dislikes, religious beliefs, toxins, and deficiencies all have to be considered. For example, fluoride sensitivity or toxicity can make arthritic symptoms worse and can even be the cause of joint problems. A few months ago, I published an article on arthritis in Vitality, so for greater detail see https://vitalitymagazine.com/article/treating-arthritis-naturally/ 20
VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2021

For osteoarthritis my top six remedies are: Cod liver oil: (2 Tbsp or 6 capsules) taken daily will provide adequate vitamin A and D plus omega-3 fatty acids for most adults. A and D can also be taken individually but cod liver oil has historically produced superior results for osteoarthritis, and other forms of arthritis for that matter. Cod liver oil is inexpensive, well tolerated, and usually quite effective within six weeks for most arthritis cases. (If a person is using high doses of vitamin D then it’s a good idea to combine it with vitamin K2 to prevent calcium from depositing in the arteries or organs. One should take at least 120 mcg of vitamin K2 for each 1,000 IU of vitamin D.)
1
Glucosamine sulfate: (500 mg 3 times daily). This is the building block of articular cartilage. Numerous doubleblind studies done in the 1980s concluded that supplementation reverses osteoarthritis, and other studies show it to be superior for pain relief to ibuprofen and NSAIDS. Glucosamine is required for synthesis of glycosaminoglycans which aid in repair of cartilage destroyed by arthritis. Some companies market glucosamine sulfate with chondroitin, but chondroitin has almost zero absorption in the gut. When you swallow glucosamine it converts in the body to chondroitin, making it unnecessary to take it orally.
2
MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane): (2,000 mg 3 times daily – but some arthritic victims have benefitted from doses up to 12,000 mg daily). This is the physiological form of sulfur in the body and crucial for reversing inflammation in the joints. It’s vital for the health of hair, skin, and nails as well as joints. Additionally, it improves absorption of trace minerals like zinc and copper.
3
Niacinamide (one of the B complex vitamins): (500 mg 6 times daily), benefits osteoarthritis by boosting the adrenal gland’s production of the anti-inflammatory hormone glucocorticoid. Unfortunately, this takes many months to effectively reduce joint inflammation but studies indicate that it does work quite well. Another possible limitation of its use is nausea, in which case a lower dose along with ginger supplements will make it easier to tolerate.
4
Vitamin C: (2,000 mg 3 times daily) or even higher doses will help reduce inflammation just about anywhere in the body. The only limiting factor is loose bowel movements in some sensitive individuals. In such cases, equivalent doses of liposomal vitamin C could be better tolerated. Alternatively, intravenous vitamin C can be used in much higher doses since that form bypasses the GI tract.
5
Curcumin: (1,000 mg, 3 times daily). This is the major anti-inflammatory component of turmeric, a spice which contains about 3% curcumin. So turmeric by itself may not provide the same degree of pain relief as high doses of cur-

cumin. Longvida, Meriva, and BCM-95 are three forms of curcumin derived from turmeric that you will find in your local health food store. Avoid brands that do not list one of these sources on the label because those are synthetic forms of curcumin which may or may not be as active.
Heart Disease - Traditional Chinese Mediicine Practitioner
- Over 30 yrs Clinical Experience;
Here’s another broad category of chronic illnesses that responds well to a natural approach. Included in this group are high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease. The remedies listed here surprisingly apply to all forms in this category. Here are the six most important ones:
- President of Toronto Institute of Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture;
- Executive Director of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.
1
Vitamin D: (5,000 to 10,000 IU daily) for most adults is important both for prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease. There are now multiple books written on the cardiovascular benefits of vitamin D, especially when combined with other nutrients like omega-3, vitamin K2, E, and C.
2
Magnesium: (1,000 – 2,000 mg daily) will work as well as just about every drug ever prescribed for cardiovascular disease. Magnesium is an important factor in making vitamin D function optimally. Adequate blood levels reduce high blood pressure, coronary arterial spasm, and angina pain, while opening up (dilating) arteries throughout the body, strengthening the heart muscle, and improving heart beat irregularities (arrhythmias). There are many forms of magnesium. The best absorbed ones include magnesium bisglycinate and threonate. Magnesium citrate and oxide are poorly absorbed but have a good benefit for constipation. Too much supplementation with magnesium citrate or oxide will produce diarrhea in some individuals. For those with gut problems, high doses of magnesium can be delivered transdermally with a magnesium gel or through intravenous magnesium sulfate or chloride.

Coenzyme Q10: (200 mg twice daily) is the most important antioxidant for the heart. In fact, it is crucial for heart muscle energy. Many cardiac drugs (beta blockers and statins) will deplete CoQ10 and produce weakness where you do not want it. The ubiquinone form is the least expensive and just as effective as the much hyped ubiquinol form, claimed to have superior absorption. When you use the ubiquinone form it converts in the body to ubiquinol in any event. Don’t forget that all the beneficial studies done on CoQ10 were done with ubiquinone.
4
Nattokinase: (100 mg twice daily) is an enzyme derived from natto and has been used for thousands of years in the Orient for both the prevention and treatment of just about every kind of cardiovascular disease. Its major www.vitalitymagazine.com

claim to fame is its ability to prevent blood clots and circulation blockages associated with heart attacks and strokes. Most people think of it mainly as a “blood thinner,” but it has also been used to lower high cholesterol and reduce high blood pressure. Conventional medical experts, however, shudder at the mere Cinnamon improves insulin resistance thought of this enzyme being used and helps reduce as an alternative to standard anticoabdominal girth agulant therapies. 5
Vitamin E Complex: (400 – 800 IU daily) has a long history of benefit for any cardiovascular concerns. Avoid using a vitamin E supplement that doesn’t contain the full spectrum of the vitamin E family of tocopherols and tocotrienols, so look for those brands that list the whole family and not just d-alpha tocopherol. Vitamin E Complex basically extends the life of red blood cells and this improves oxygenation of the entire cardiovascular system.
6
Vitamin C: (1,000 – 6,000 mg daily) taken to bowel tolerance, has long been known to improve all aspects of the cardiovascular system. Linus Pauling, a very wellknown vitamin C proponent, wrote that vitamin C deficiency is the major cause of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids improve the integrity of arteries and prevent damage to the arterial endothelium, the part of the artery where atherosclerosis begins.
Cancer This is a more complex chronic illness and specific natural remedies must be individualized for the type of cancer, the stage of the illness, and the overall health of the individual. There are, however, six remedies I recommend to virtually all cancer cases if they are not currently getting radiation or chemotherapy. Choosing the remedies for this list is difficult because of the hundreds of alternative cancer therapies that have been described over the years by experts such as Dr. Ralph W. Moss. Here are my favourites. One word of warning about these remedies is their potential unfavourable interaction with chemothera24

py and radiation. Taking them at the same time is not recommended unless your oncologist agrees that you can do so. Low dose Naltrexone: (1.5 to 4.5 mg daily) will enhance the body’s own immune response to curtail cancer spread. In high doses, naltrexone has been used to prevent death from opiate overdoses. It will not work in low doses on cancer patients who are using high-dose opiates for pain, and is discouraged in such cases. The one side effect seen in some people is very vivid dreams but this effect tends to wane with time. Otherwise, I have rarely seen any other problems associated with long term use.
1
High potency digestive enzymes (e.g. Wobenzyme or Intenzyme Forte): (5 to 10 tablets daily taken on an empty stomach) can reduce inflammation and thereby reduce cancer spread. It should be noted that these enzymes are not universally well tolerated due to digestive hypersensitivities or indigestion of many kinds. Start with low doses and gradually build up to tolerance.
2
Vitamin D3 + K2: (10,000 IU of D3 plus 1,200 mcg of K2 daily) will also reduce inflammation and cancer spread in most cases. Regular blood testing every three months is a good idea if possible to avoid overdosing with D (usually evidenced by a high blood calcium level). Vitamin D3 and K2 have a synergistic effect as cancer fighters and will work even better when combined with about 4,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids daily.
3
Vitamin C: (6,000 mg daily, or to bowel tolerance) will work as an anti-cancer agent. But even higher doses (75,000 mg intravenously) are more likely to be effective in killing cancer stem cells. If IV vitamin C is unavailable in your area, use liposomal vitamin C orally and take as much as your bowels will tolerate on a daily basis.

ticularly effective against cancers in the liver.

Bicarbonate powder or capsules: (5-10 grams daily) is a high alkaline mixture which is normally made in smaller amounts by the body to offset high acidity. Cancer thrives in acidity and spread occurs in a largely acid medium. Bicarbonate can neutralize that. Some European physicians have recommended injecting bicarbonate into tumours as well as using it intravenously in high doses.
Diabetes Not too long ago I published an article about the natural approach to diabetes in Vitality (https://vitality magazine.com/article/healing-diabetes-naturally/). Diet is crucial with this chronic condition, but there are also some very important natural remedies that one can use whether or not one is on insulin or diabetes medications. Here are the most important ones applicable to mainly Type 2 diabetes:
1
Alpha Lipoic Acid: (100 - 1,000 mg daily) to prevent peripheral neuropathy and other complications of diabetes. Monitor blood sugars well with ALA as they can plummet rapidly. Start low and go slow with upping doses.
2
Chromium picolinate, citrate or chelate: (1,000 mcg. daily) is an essential mineral that’s an active ingredient of GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor). Chromium corrects both high and low blood sugar levels.
3
Cinnamon: (6,000 mg daily) improves insulin resistance and helps reduce abdominal girth. Cinnamon can be sprinkled on foods, mixed with juices, taken as a tea, put into smoothies, or taken as capsules like regular supplements. This is especially effective for those who want to lose some abdominal fat deposits.
4
B complex vitamins: (100 mg or more daily) especially B1, B3, B6, B12, biotin, and folic acid because they are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates by the body. Niacinamide in particular is important since it is involved in the synthesis of insulin in the pancreas.
5
Magnesium bisglycinate: (200 mg. 3 times daily) is a form of magnesium associated with a much lower risk of causing diarrhea as a side effect. Recent studies indicate a substantial improvement in insulin resistance with regular supplementation of this trace mineral.
6
Vitamin D: (5,000 – 10,000 IU daily) unless you are getting at least half an hour of sun exposure daily because new research indicates that adequate levels of vitamin D can improve insulin resistance. It’s good to combine D with vitamin K2 (at least 120 mcg for each 1,000 IU) to prevent calcium excess in the system. 28

GERD Gastro-esophageal reflux disorder (GERD) is one of the commonest problems I’ve encountered among patients at my office over the past decade. Just about every patient diagnosed with this condition has been prescribed stomach acid-suppressing drugs, sometimes for Probiotics are a key player in years at a time. healing GERD I also wrote a detailed article on this because they topic in Vitality magazine not too long help to replenish ago (https://vitalitymagazine.com/artithe gut flora cle/best-natural-treatments-for-heartburn-gerd-and-indigestion/). Aside from the many diet changes I discussed in the article, here are the best remedies: DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice): This is licorice without the component that could elevate blood pressure. Use one or two DGL lozenges (250-500 mg) up to 4 times daily as needed for symptoms. DGL encourages the goblet cells of the stomach to secrete more mucin, a natural agent that protects the lining of the stomach and duodenum from acid. It is not an antacid but works like one without preventing mineral absorption.
1
Slippery Elm lozenges: (250 – 500 mg) Use one or two lozenges up to 4 times daily as needed for symptoms.
2 3
L-Glutamine powder: (1 tsp. or 5,000 mg) twice daily – heals the lining of the GI tract and helps in the repair of a leaky gut.
4
Essiac: (4 – 8 ounces daily) is the four-herb combination of burdock, slippery elm, Turkish rhubarb, and sheep sorrel that is effective for a wide range of gut problems including hiatus hernia, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, non-specific indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and bowel infections.

5
Probiotics: (60 billion cells of a broad spectrum friendly bacterial culture) – daily to improve the health of the gut flora
6
Bicarbonate powder – 1 tsp or 3 capsules (500 mg per capsule) taken several times daily as needed for symptoms will neutralize any hyperacidity symptoms. Bicarbonate is an alkaline remedy normally made by the body to keep pH levels from going too high on the acid side, and side effects are rarely seen. Reader Advice on How to Protect Ourselves from Wireless Radiation (3G,4G,5G) In October of 1996, you published an article of mine titled “Electro-Magnetic Fields”. Both of us appear to be going on strong 25 years later! However in midDecember 2020, I began to react badly to a neighbour’s wireless internet with aching eyes, dizziness, and fatigue. These symptoms eased after I draped silver-coated silk fabric designed to repel RF (Radio Frequency) radiation over my body. So I did some research on what is happening in the world of 4G enhancements and the expected 5G roll-out that I

would like to share with your readers. It seems that the telecom industry is gearing up to install ‘small cell antennas’ on lamp posts, telephone poles, and house rooftops every 100 to 300 meters in urban and rural areas. See: https://www.5gcrisis.com/5g -basics You might want to take precautions. There has been no longterm testing of the health effects of the 5G millimetre wave 7 to 60 GHz wireless systems. Meantime, 2G, 3G and 4G are already causing adverse health effects. Some professionals like Frank Clegg from http://c4st.org/ (Canadians for Safe Technology) and Dr. Magda Havas from https://magdahavas.com/ have been sharing their concerns about adverse health effects of wireless technology for years. While we have a choice about whether to have cell phones and wireless gadgets in our homes, we have little or no choice about placement of 5G cell towers and small cell antenna. This 20 minute video by Dr. Havas outlines the health dangers of 5G technology: https://tinyurl.com/magda havason5G Those of us with electrohyper-sensitivity experience health problems like aching eyes, headache, fatigue, dizziness. We cope by shielding our bodies, beds, and www.vitalitymagazine.com
rooms with shielding fabrics and paints from companies like www.essentia.ca and https://safelivingtechnologies.com/ in Canada or https://lessemf.com/ in USA The amount of RF (radio frequency) exposure is increasing dramatically now. 5G cell towers are being erected across the country (including one in Owen Sound and three in Barrie). Thousands of satellites have been placed in the sky showering us with microwave radiation. Coming soon are small cell antenna on telephone poles and lamp posts. In January 2021, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission clarified that 5G antennas can be placed on house rooftops What can we do? 1. Read http://c4st.org/ reduce-exposure-from-wireless-transmitting-devices/ 2. Consider removing wireless devices from your home. Connect to internet through either: a) fibre optics which is safer than wireless because it doesn’t emit any radiation; b) Use a landline telephone. Ask your internet provider for a modem/router with no Wi-Fi capability like a Comtrend CT-5772T. Ask them to disable Wi-Fi to your house. Connect a telephone jack to the modem and the modem to the computer. (Buy a USB to Ethernet adapter if your computer does not have an Ethernet port.) Make sure computer Wi-Fi option is set to ‘Off’. c) If you are not ready to give up your Wi-Fi yet, at least select the 2.4 GHz setting for your router and ask Continued on page 41 VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2021

uning into the earth’s cycles can inspire our creative work and keep our lives ‘in the flow’. Spring offers an energetic opportunity to commit to our personal journey – particularly those intentions and beliefs that we choose to nourish this coming year. The process includes being aware of what we choose not to ‘grow’ in the garden of our story lines. A friend was describing a group she is working with, the members of which all met through a workshop. They are helping each other remove their masks and reveal to each other the worst thing they have done that the masks have protected. She laughed and said it was wonderfully liberating, sort of like taking your clothes off in front of others, and then choosing which clothes to put back on. That is a perfect exercise to be doing in the spring. It is reminiscent of the April rains that wash off the growth inhibitors coating seeds within the ground. Once naked, they can begin to send shoots into the light and transform themselves into beautiful new plants. Spring’s gift can be the

Many of us are caught up in where we find ourselves right now. But spring is a great time to reassess and ask: “What are three new things I would like to manifest for myself this season?” inspiration to practice magical transformations in our own lives. For me, five years have passed since my mom died, and there have been many gentle adjustments to my orientation as my story line adapts to such a deep change. Some of the changes involve a return of the energy that was spent as a caregiver for five years, and also a surprising sense of freedom from ‘expectations’ as a daughter, be they real or imagined. So I am ripe for weaving a new story for myself this spring that is a reflection of who I now am. The magical part of the weaving, the creative art form, feels like a combination of learning
what I want to manifest and remembering how to create my intentions in the world.
What New Things Would You Like to Manifest? A basic principle with which we’re all familiar is the law of attraction: like attracts like. An assumption of this principle is that the universe gives us an unlimited supply of subatomic particles with which to create our lives on a daily basis. First step – we must know what we want to manifest. This can be challenging if we limit ourselves, which is evident if we find limitations in our life. We can often feel we are close, yet what we want is not manifesting.

To bypass limiting beliefs we might begin at the end. Imagine you have died and are looking back at your incarnation. Ask yourself what was the one thing you really wanted to do? What message or gift did you want to share? If that answer is not clear, ask what made you the happiest in life, or when did you feel the most engaged? These are great reminders of your gifts and strengths. Looking from this higher perspective of our life passion can help us manifest the things we want, like a job or a new home, or whatever our specific intentions are. Creating from within a larger story line aids in transference of energy from our unseen self, or higher self, to our physical manifestations. It is akin to relaxing into an

expanded version of ourselves which allows the flow of unseen creative energy to aid in our weaving.
The Role of Intention and Meditation Once we know what we want to manifest in our story line the real alchemy begins. Visualizing what we want in detail gives it a form. Meditating on how it feels to be experiencing this new reality gives the visualization a magnetic charge. According to researchers, when we plant a seed (intention) in the field of creation, it begins to transform from an idea into a vibrational reality, and the subatomic particles can then begin to transform the idea into form. By holding the frequency of the original intention it will move toward us as its cre-

ator. It is a big weaving. There is quantum physics at work here, which books like Bruce Lipton’s The Biology of Belief can demystify. Cognitive biologists suggest we are only using between 3% and 5% of our brain. Perhaps our ability to create reality is akin to a manifestation ‘muscle’ that we’ve forgotten we possess, that requires exercise on our part to get back into shape. Here’s an example: When you go to bed at night, set an intention to have a deep, restful sleep and to wake refreshed. If you want to get clarity on an issue, ask for that as well. Do this every night. You will begin to not only have an abundance of good sleeps, but also receive insights into your inquiries. You will begin to trust your ability to set intentions and get results. Start small. Once you truly trust your ability to connect to creation and manifest answers, the self doubt and masks fall away, and a life story architect is born. May much happiness and love grow in your spring garden. Kim Elkington is the co-founder of The Algonquin Tea Co, a line of quality teas made from organic wildcrafted Canadian herbs. SPRING 2021 Sun Sign Predictions ★★★ by Julie Simmons ★★★ Spring Overview: Listen for the voice of the turtle. You may be tired of the same old news but when you ‘get’ how you are an expression of nature, truly a child of this earth, it all becomes more interesting. When we calm our own nervous system it will help calm the collective one. The gap between circumstances and a plan to deal with them remains. But we’re getting there. The absence of Venus from the visible sky this spring suggests we need some rethinking regarding our pleasures. Which of these harm the planet? How can we change? It’s a process. Look inward and consider the simple pleasures, the un-frenetic ones. The online world demands constant consumption, relentless proof that we are having a good time. Genuine introspection will bring us to a higher quality of all things beautiful and pleasurable. March: It’s not easy to be born again to spring. The body adjusts. Help it. Notice the feeling of waking up. Be like the first flowers of spring – delicate, colourful, promising nothing in particular but renewal. New Moon: March 13. Full Moon: March 28th. April: The big issue of 2021 is to learn all we can, building on what we know in a rapidly changing world. It’s all in the application. If it doesn’t work it isn’t practical. New Moon: April 11. Full Moon: April 26. May: Listen. Focus. Distraction is easy in the moment but it eats time and wastes energy. Be like a juggler; keep your centre even as you notice when to catch and when to release. Movement from the still place at the centre is the opposite of distraction. New Moon: May 11. Full Moon: May 26. ARIES: March 20 - April 19
March: A New Moon calls you to listen for subtle messages arising from dreams and from thoughts that swim up from the depths. The Full Moon reveals how you meet life’s challenges. Look with an eye toward justice, kindness and cooperation for a better world. April: At the New Moon set an intention for your body. Exercise, vitality, and rebirth are the promise. It’s up to you to make it happen. At the Full Moon survey your resources, who you do and don’t share them with, and how best to manage them. Avoidance will bite you in the backside. May: You want it all at the New Moon just like everyone. Be honest about how much is more than enough. Your greatest resource is simplicity. The greatest benefit at the Full Moon comes when you unplug. As you watch the powerful antics of the mind, consider the acronym: W.A.I.T. which asks the question; ‘Why am I talking?’ Say less, hear more. 42

TAURUS: April 20 - May 20
March: The best intentions are ones made for the good of all. Let yours be thus at the New Moon. At the Full Moon things that go bump in the night (and wake you up) are calling you to inner awareness and action. Be a spiritual warrior – not in control of external forces but master of internal ones. April: To maintain health requires an intention toward integration of body, mind, and soul at the New Moon. Empowered from within, you create conditions for genuine healing which benefits everyone. The Full Moon shines its light on relationships. With Venus being invisible you might ask: Why do I care? Questioning all aspects of relationship doesn’t guarantee answers but sets the stage for improvement. May: Make intention at the New Moon towards shoring up simple pleasures that make life sweet. To live from your values is a calling. Distractions knock at your door around the Full Moon. Take a deep breath. Release. Allow distractions to settle. In this way you regain control of your attention. GEMINI: May 21 - June 20
March: Set an intention at the New Moon to be the best you can. Get lots of physical exercise but don’t overdo it. Enough is as good as a feast. The Full Moon shows you that by staying connected to people you love you stay positive. Dance, sing, play however you can. April: Liberate your mind at the New Moon by allowing yourself to imagine the future, not only for yourself but with and for others. You may be one little spec of life in a Great Big Sea but you matter as much and as little as others. The Full Moon requires retreat into the body’s wisdom. S/he speaks from the sacred place where you know yourself to be fully alive and full of love. May: Vowing to make the most of what you have and who you are is inspiring and does not require grandiosity. The New Moon asks that you acknowledge yourself as the main character in your story and part of a grand design. At the Full Moon be awake to truly listening to others, even when they are difficult. The heart opens when the mind calms. CANCER: June 21 - July 21
March: Before Covid it was easier to dream big. Now we see many broken dreams. Nevertheless it’s dreams that bring life into being. Dare to dream of a free and open world at the New Moon. You can test its viability at the Full Moon when you see what it takes to make a dream come true. April: The New Moon asks you to put intention into your ambitions. Much could be www.vitalitymagazine.com

done to bring together people of solid values, who know what’s worth having. Spend time with them at the Full Moon. May: A good laugh is as good as an intention at the new Moon. Kick back and enjoy your favourite comedies or just the silly-ness of life. Even better when shared. A good laugh cleans the pipes. Watch the world dash madly off in all directions at the Full Moon. No need to be part of that fray. Astute observation makes us wiser still. LEO: July 22 - Aug. 22
March: Make a statement regarding commitment to inner work at the New Moon. There is always more because the world is constantly changing. The Full Moon is time for sharing ideas. Focus on things that matter. April: Inspiration fuels intentions at the New Moon. Life is an adventure, even if it’s not the one you think you signed on for. At the Full Moon take a look at what you can, can’t, and absolutely refuse to do. Mere observation is instructive. May: Stand by your heartfelt ambitions at the New Moon. The best ambitions come from the heart. The Full Moon reveals the blueprint underlying your life’s path. Perhaps it requires some adaptation. VIRGO: Aug. 23 - Sept. 21
March: The question of the New Moon is not Why am I here?, but rather Who am I here with? Relationships open doors to other worlds or at least other ways of being in this one. The Full Moon displays a vast array of issues regarding resources including trust, reward, intimacy and pleasure as well as security. Look around. April: If you could control the world it might be a better place but consider how difficult it is to control even yourself. These issues are real and present at the New Moon. Focus your attention on your intention for personal transformation. May: Following your path is not easy. It helps to focus on it at the New Moon. Hint: It’s not straight and narrow. Yours is a left-handed path, twisting and turning organically in resonance with the natural world. Anxiety gets you nowhere at the Full Moon but anxiety can be a sign of heightened perception, a good thing to know about yourself. LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 22
March: Burnout from a long, difficult winter requires replenishment of body, mind, and spirit. Make this your intention at the New Moon. Follow through for at least a month. The antics of others can make you laugh or cry, depending on your perspective at the Full Moon. Humour and wisdom are first cousins. April: Renewal is the promise of the season. At the New 44

Moon listen with all your heart to the stirrings of new life, in yourself as well as people and nature which surround you. Simple pleasures shared with trusted others give you real joy at the Full Moon. Find safe ways to connect. May: What fascinates you most about the natural world? The New Moon encourages you to research and/or immerse yourself in the mudluscious mandate of spring. At the Full Moon you combine love of nature with your immediate local environment. What lives and thrives in your neighborhood? SCORPIO: Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
March: An intention arises naturally from your love of life and for the Good of All at the New Moon. Trust it. The Full Moon points toward your lifestyle. It’s the small stuff: health, work, and daily practice that makes the big stuff easier. How are you doing? April: When the Moon is new we make intentions. This one is about you using your mighty will. How might you direct it toward transforming your life? Get real with relationships at the Full Moon, which isn’t to say ruthless or mean. Simply acknowledging how you feel about people is plenty. May: Be a good listener. Listen with your belly and you hear everything. Practice this from the New Moon onwards. Some say the chaos of our world is on account of being between stories. The Full Moon asks you to consider which stories you tell yourself as you navigate your life on Earth. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20
March: Concern for your family, be it blood relatives or all beings, is the starting place for your intentions at the New Moon. All human interactions are political when you think about it. Observe group dynamics at the Full Moon; just because it’s human, not because it’s good or bad. April: Let your enthusiasm for that which you love focus your intention for the New Moon. Humans are fundamentally creative. Love and fun are great ways to generate creativity. Get down to business at the Full Moon. No time to waste. May: Let your intention for the New Moon be toward selfcare. You matter. Pure and simple. And so does your wellbeing. Starting before and lingering a bit after the Full Moon, it’s all about relationships. S/he said they said. Be a good listener but don’t let your voice be drowned out. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19
March: Fond dreams of nature inspire intentions at the New Moon. How can you spend more time there? Right outside your door is some version of the natural world. Regard it with awe. The Full Moon shines its light on your level of excellence and mastery. How’s your report card? April: What can you do with your ancestral gifts? Wherever they came from, whatever their struggles and accomplishments, your intention at the New Moon is to make their lives worthwhile because of your own. possibilities, without attachment at the Full Moon. Be open. May: Follow your nose to the good smells of spring, flowers, and maybe just the green earth. Your best intentions at the New Moon arise out of love for this planet. By the Full Moon you find yourself hard at work, cultivating. Imagine your life as a fertile field. What do you see growing there? AQUARIUS: Jan. 20 - Feb. 17
March: Every new moon allows us to begin again. This month take a good look at your priorities. What matters? What is just a waste of time, energy, money and/or love? The Full Moon points to the fact that words have power. How you use them matters. Don’t just talk. Say something or be quiet. April: Form an intention to focus more on what you actually want to say at the New Moon. Be bold, speak truth, and give some thought to whether or not it makes sense. Stand your ground, as you are wont to do, at the Full Moon. Your ideals are important. Holding firm without rigidity is the task. May: Let go of the persistent yet useless sense that things should/could have been different. Make an intention at the New Moon to honour all those upon whose shoulders you stand even as you understand fully that this is your life. At the Full Moon shake loose and have some fun with whoever wants to play with you. The less serious, the better. PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19
March: As you prepare for a spring like no other, imagine yourself swimming to the surface of a big body of water. What intention comes to mind as you view the world above? At the Full Moon take stock of all that you have, all that you want, and all you must share. April: How should or could you spend your resources? Let this question guide your intention for the New Moon. We can’t always get what we want. The bright and illuminating full Moon shows you something real, something that isn’t just in your mind. What is it? May: As confusion begins to swirl, be flexible. Make an intention at the New Moon to learn, to listen, and allow thoughts to arise and pass without having to hold on to any just yet. The Full Moon reminds you that family matters. Whether they are right there or live only in memory, each of them contributes something to various parts of yourself. It’s almost magical. Letters to Editor ~ cont.d from page 37 protect our health and safety.” Joel M. Moskowitz, Director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the School of Public Health at the U. of California, Berkeley. I have a question. Do you know if there are any groups of concerned citizens in Canada attempting to influence the decision of federal politicians to take a stance of prudence rather than recklessness on the 5G deployment? Kath A., Meaford, Ontario
Dr. Andrew Michrowski responds, re: EMF detection and shielding devices: Thank you for your kind words about Essentia. Here are my comments about Katherin’s letter and electromagnetic radiation protection devices in general. Re: Paint products – In regards to paint products that are promoted as “EMF shielding paints”, we have found problems with them. In many of my EMF surveys, I have observed that the “shielding” paints can produce strong boundary layer effects and sometimes do not even shield – depending on the layouts of rooms, doorways, stud walls, etc. These paints may even make microwave energy density rise inside. Plus, just like latex paint products, they can create off-gassing which may be allergenic, especially for children who might touch and even lick such coatings. Re: Shielding Fabrics – Fortunately, as an alternative to paint products, I have been able to locate an advanced product line from Poland, ADR TEX, which is compatible with many sensitive persons I know, providing relief, because it does not create an annoying boundary layer effect of charges collecting on both sides of many “shielding” fabrics. For example, the ADR Mat Tex Bedding product can be placed on a mattress to absorb electromagnetic radiation. It reduces 99.87% dielectrics up to 10 GHz (ranging from electric power to 4G / 5G emissions). The EMF absorption is due to both the composite’s dispersed water and its matrix components. It can also be used above as a canopy, in a room as a curtain, or inside bed covers. For more on this and other ADR products check: https://www.essentia.ca/product/adrmat-tex-bedding-2m-x-2m/ Re: EMF Detection devices: Also the meter which ESSENTIA carries, advertised in Vitality (page 47), the TriField T2, measures not only the radio-frequency / microwave bandwidth - directionally - for the same spectrum width, but also includes the extremely important power frequency magnetic and electric fields - including the “noise” from “dirty electricity”.
