Happy spring! Welcome to the first issue of Vitality in its new format as a digital magazine. Now more than ever, it is important to protect the freedom of choice in healthcare that we have been advocating since 1989. To that end, we aim to continue providing the best information we can find on alternative medicine for preventing and treating chronic and acute illness as well as injuries caused by Western medicine. Because the incidence of myocarditis (heart inflammation) has increased significantly over the past few years [1] Dr. Zoltan Rona brings us a feature this month on “Myocarditis: 12 Natural Remedies for Prevention and Treatment.” Here we learn about Chinese Medicine herbs such as astragalus, green tea, and reishi mushrooms for clearing inflammation and tonifying the heart, as well as vitamins D, C, and CoQ10 for nourishing cardiovascular wellness. Regarding Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I was shocked to learn recently of the plans to deregulate this powerful healing tradition by our provincial government. As someone who has greatly benefited from TCM therapies over the years, I can vouch for its safety and efficacy in the right hands. In fact, acupuncture and Chinese herbs (along with nutritional medicine) have kept me out of hospitals and doctors’ offices for decades. This has saved Ontario taxpayers a lot of money. So it makes no sense for TCM to lose its regulatory status, and I would encourage you to sign the petition referred to on page 5. And if you’re wondering who the top regulated TCM practitioners are in the GTA, take a look at page 14 and 24. Also this month we bring you a feature by Julie Daniluk on “Foraging for the First Foods of Spring.” Local wild plants such as fiddleheads, dandelions, and morel mushrooms can help to clear winter sludge from the body by cleansing the liver and flushing the lymphatic system. Making this spring ritual taste good is never easy because the flavours can be bitter, but I think Julie has done it with her expert recipes. 2

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2022

Getting back to the subject of our new digital magazine – while we regret no longer being on the street with a print publication, at the same time we have been delighted with the community support coming in. Namely, many businesses have stepped up to share Vitality with their network of subscribers. Amazing! This includes health food stores, retreat centres, and more. So this sharing of the magazine will work to expand our reach way beyond our own subscriber base, which is wonderful. As well, many of our former print readers are contacting us to order a free subscription to the digital magazine, and sending us their good wishes too. This means a lot to us in these turbulent times. Here are some recent letters we received: • “Before anything else – thank you all! For so many years, I learned so much about alternatives to the usual medical possibilities, so of course I would like to continue reading all your articles. My daughter had a life-threatening illness, is much better now, and I KNOW that many of her attitudes are due to broadening her health education through your beautiful minds demonstrated in your beautiful magazine!!” C. Chown, Uxbridge, Ont. • “Still sad after learning that my favourite health magazine will no longer be printed… May I ask to add my email to your list of subscribers.” Izabela O. • “Hello, We would like to receive the new monthly digital newsletter. We have really enjoyed Vitality. It’s the best magazine of its kind. Please put our $16 towards producing the digital version. We look forward to receiving it.” John S., Fergus, On • “So sorry to hear you will not be publishing a physical magazine any longer and I wanted you to know that I will not require a refund of unused subscription. Let it be my contribution towards your continued existence, in whatever form. I find I rely on Vitality for factual information that I am unable to find elsewhere. I shall look forward to continuing to enjoy Vitality and all its offerings.” R. Kantz Readers: If you wish to share the magazine with your network, email: subscribe@ vitalitymagazine.com and request a link to the digital magazine for sharing.

TINNITUS AND OXIDATIVE STRESS

by Jule Klotter Oxidative stress is a major factor underlying the ringing, roaring, or other annoying (even debilitating) sounds that characterize tinnitus. Those sounds can cause sleep disorders, depression, and impair social cohesion and quality of life. Cochlear degeneration is the main cause of tinnitus. Oxidative stress is known to produce cochlear degeneration and changes in auditory hair cells and nerve fibers. As Celik and Koyuncu explain in their 2018 article, “The sensorineural epithelial tissues of the cochlea are more susceptible to deleterious effects caused by free radicals than other tissues of the body.” Because of the relationship between oxidative stress and tinnitus, and because tinnitus patients have “higher plasma concentrations of oxidative stress biomarkers and lower antioxidant activity” than healthy people, a group of Greek researchers, led by Anna I. Petridou, decided to test the effects of supplementation on people with tinnitus. Their 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 70 people, between 25 and 75 years old. The treatment group took a commercially available multivitamin-multimineral supplement (Lamberts), which included 500 mg of standardized grape seed extract once a day with a meal. Grape seed extract is a rich source of phenolic compounds, such as epicatechin, resveratrol and procyanidin oligomers; 4

NEWS & NOTES

Research reports on Nutrition, Health & Anti-Aging from Around the World COMPILED BY JULIA WOODFORD

Antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid and grape seed extract have been found to alleviate ringing in the ears

“many experimental studies have proven the protective effect of polyphenols against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity and cochlear hair cell damage after intense noise exposure.” Participants in the treatment group also took one tablet of alpha-lipoic acid (300 mg) twice a day on an empty stomach. Animal and human studies show that alpha-lipoic acid protects against noise-induced hearing loss. The placebo group took three placebo pills with similar shape and colour to the supplements, made by a local manufacturing pharmacy. An investigator, uninvolved in the study, packaged the supplements and the placebos in identical containers and bags and labeled each with a participant’s number. At study’s end, only participants in the supplement group had a significant reduction in tinnitus loudness from baseline, reflected

in lower minimum masking levels (p<0.001). The supplement group also had a mean reduction in the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory of 6 points (“considered clinically relevant”). Also, the supplement group, unlike the placebo group, displayed “a significant decrease in the auditory threshold at the frequencies of 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz and 6000 Hz” – that is, their hearing improved. The authors note that the commercial multivitamin and mineral supplement used in this study contained only 150 mg of vitamin C and only 100 mg (150 iu) of vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol acetate), but they did not want to use isolated nutrients: “...our hypothesis was that an antioxidant combination might be more effective compared with single nutrients, since various antioxidants have a synergistic/complementary activ-

ity.” Although the combination of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and alpha lipoic acid reduced tinnitus intensity and patient discomfort, they would like to see further investigation on its possible effect on oxidative stress biomarkers. The above is excerpted from a longer article published in Townsend Letter (April 2021: www.townsend letter.com To read the complete report, go to: (place the URL here) LUTEIN / ZEAXANTHIN ARE STILL THE NUTRIENTS OF CHOICE FOR HEALTHY EYES

(The Council for Responsible Nutrition) Sure, you should still eat your carrots – they’re good for your eyes. And you should also be aware of studies like this one that show lutein, zeaxanthin and mesozeaxanthin are found in the human macula. As a result, these carotenoid antioxidant supplements may protect the retina and actually act to filter blue light (which we’re all getting so much of). This review of 46 studies found that macular pigment optical density increased among adults with healthy eyes – particularly at higher doses of lutein/zeaxanthin intake. More research is called for in order to find the most effective minimal doses and how long the supplements should be taken. DIFFERENT FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS MAY WORK IN DISTINCT WAYS

A small randomized doubleblind trial led by researchers at Tufts University suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA have different effects on chronic inflammation in older obese adults. The study participants were randomly assigned to receive either EPA or DHA fish oil supplements twice a day. Research shows that these fatty acids can lower risk of heart disease, probably by reducing inflammation. These results suggest that DHA is the more powerful of the two on markers of inflammation in the body, although the researchers found that EPA was better than DHA at enhancing crucial balance between the two. “For prevention of cardiovascular disease, previous research tells us that balance is important,” explained first author Jisun So. CHINESE MEDICINE FACING DEREGULATON

Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine are expressing deep concerns over a section of the government’s new Labour Reform Bill that aims to deregulate their profession. According to Politics Today: “Schedule 5 of Bill 88, Working for Workers Act 2, repeals the Traditional Chinese Medicine Act, which gives the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario regulatory, licensing, and enforcement authority in the province. The Bill would then place the college under the control of an administrator tasked with “winding up” its operations.” (See: https://tinyurl.com/TCMder egulation) There is currently a petition posted at change.org with the purpose of stopping the deregulation of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. It has 24,048 signatures so far. To add your name to it, go to: https://tinyurl.com/petitiont osaveTCM To ensure public safety, it is important that Chinese Medicine is regulated.

devour an entire juniper bush in one sitting. But that’s not to say you should try eating random plants, as you must be trained in how to process them to remove any potential toxins. “When it comes to mushrooms, learn from an expert!”, he says. “If you make a mistake, it could cause nerve damage.” The great news is that there are fantastic safe plants that you can start enjoying today. One of the best examples is brewing white pine needles into a healing tea. It has been documented that Jacques Cartier (the great early explorer of Canada), and half of his ship’s crew, were saved from scurvy (caused by lack of vitamin C) when an Iroquois tribe made them a broth of pine needles. A strong brew of pine tea provides more vitamin C than three lemons. Let the tea steep for about two hours at least. Surprisingly, most pine needle teas are not bitter. But if the tea is strong for your taste, add a little honey, preferably unpasteurized, or try some local maple or birch syrup made around this time of year. The best time to harvest pine needles for tea is from November through April, when the trees produce the greatest amount of nutrients to protect themselves.

ave you ever looked at a wild plant and wondered if it was edible? It’s amazing that even if you live in the heart of the city, there is food growing all around you. The wonderful part is, even if you don’t feel confident picking morel mushrooms or burdock yourself, the farmers’ markets and local health food stores can supply you with an exotic selection of local edibles. Our lust for wild foods was well described in 1854 by Henry David Thoreau in his book, Walden, or Life in The Woods, where he wrote: “Our village life would stagnate if it were not for the unexplored forests and meadows which surround it. We need the tonic of wildness. At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious. We can never have enough of Nature. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely.” No one understands this better than Steven Martyn, co-founder of The Sacred Gardener School of ecology. As part of The Sacred Gardener School, he teaches how to identify and eat wild plants, which helps urban folks understand that a huge amount of the wild is edible. He has been living off the land since 1984 and sees almost every plant as a possible meal. Says Martyn: “When spring strikes, As one of the first wild plant species to emerge in spring, the dandelion we are like bears coming out of hiberis a wonderful liver cleansing herb nation.” Martyn once watched a bear 6

Edible Native Plants and Naturalized Plants Below is a short list of some of the native and naturalized edible plants to explore in Ontario. Native plants have been here for thousands of years, whereas naturalized plants are those that have been brought by settlers from Europe and other areas of the world and have become part of our local ecology. Be sure to check with an herbalist or wild food expert if you are unsure of your plant identification skills. Edible Native Plants: Fiddleheads; Wild garlic; Wild leeks; Trout lilies; Birch sap; Maple sap; Sycamore sap; First shoots of grass (chew or juice); Sprouts (called keys) from the trees, such as beach or maple Edible Naturalized Plants: Mustard Greens; Nettles; Sunchokes; Rhubarb; Asparagus; Dandelion; Burdock; Plantain; Sheep Sorrel; Wild Carrot (looks like water hemlock, which is poisonous, so be careful)

Julie’s Wilted Dandelion Greens with Dried Blueberries and Pine Nuts Dandelion greens are amazing for their nutrient-packed goodness and liver/kidney cleansing properties, but folks tend to avoid them due to their bitterness. That’s not a problem with this wilted salad. The blueberries add sweetness, the pine nuts lend richness and crunch to the bitter dandelion greens, and the maple or birch syrup brings it all together. It’s easy, nutritious, and tastes like a spring cleanse on a plate. (Serves 4) 1/2 cup (or more) pine nuts 2 - 3 Tbsp olive oil One small purple onion, minced 1 to 1-1/2 Tbsp unpasteurized apple cider vinegar 1-1/2 tsp (or to taste) maple or birch syrup ½ cup of dried blueberries (or cranberries if you prefer) 3 - 4 cups dandelion greens, stems removed, washed, and cut into 3-inch lengths

1) Heat a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add the pine nuts and stir until toasted gently. Remove from heat and set aside. 2) Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan and add the chopped purple onion. Cook over medium heat until soft. Add the vinegar and maple syrup, and taste for balance. Add more oil or Sesame Burdock Sauté more vinegar depending on your taste. Add the blueberries, and cook slightly until they soften, about a minute. 3) Lower the heat, and stir the dandelion greens into the pan and toss them around until just wilted. 4) Place all ingredients into a bowl, top with pine nuts, and serve immediately.

Sesame Burdock Sauté This recipe is from my book Meals That Heal Inflammation. Burdock is one of the most powerful healing foods in the Japanese diet.* The name might be unfamiliar, but you know it as the plant with the burrs that catch on your clothes as you walk through the woods. It has been traditionally used to cleanse the liver, lymph and kidneys. With the added benefit of anti-inflammatory sesame oil, this is one of the true healing dishes. Consider serving it with any fish or lentil dish. (Makes 3 servings.) 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil 1 cup burdock root, julienned (see note below) 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth or filtered water 1 cup carrots, julienned 1 Tbsp tamari (wheat-free) 1) In a medium/large skillet or wok, sauté the burdock in sesame oil for 3 minutes over medium heat. 2) Add 1/2 cup (125 mL) of the broth, bring to a boil, cover, and continue to cook for 5 minutes. 3) Add the carrot, tamari, salt, and the remaining broth. Bring to a boil again, then and cook over medium heat for another 5 minutes until vegetables are tender. 4) To prepare burdock, scrub the skin under running water with a brush, like you would for mushrooms. Do not peel burdock root, as most of the nutrients are right below the surface of the skin. And remember, a julienne cut (used commonly in burdock recipes) results in matchstick-sized pieces of the root. *Editor’s note: Burdock root is traditionally harvested in the fall after the first frost, or in spring after the ground thaws. But you can find it in health food stores and farmers’ markets year round. 8

Not picking a spot clean will ensure that the mushrooms will be able to propagate for future pickings, so leave a few morels behind if you find a patch. (Serves 3-4) 1/2 lb fresh morels 1 lb fiddleheads 3 Tbsp olive oil 5 Tbsp butter 5-6 sprigs of thyme sea salt to taste 1) Place fiddleheads in a bowl of water and gently unfurl them an inch or so to make sure there is no trapped dirt, then trim the ends if necessary. 2) Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil, add fiddleheads, and simmer for a minute. Remove and plunge them directly into cold water, strain and set aside. 3) Gently toss the morels in a bowl to loosen any dirt that may be trapped in the honeycombs and gently brush away any dirt clinging to them, but do not rinse them in water under any circumstances. Mushrooms are like sponges and will soak up water, diluting their flavour. 4) Add olive oil to a frying pan on medium heat, and then add the butter (the olive oil will allow the butter to cook at a higher temperature without burning). Add the whole thyme sprigs (you can pick them out after). Turn the temperature to low heat, add morels and season with salt. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes. 5) Add the fiddleheads, simmer on low heat for another 3 to 4 minutes just to warm them through. Add more salt if necessary, serve and enjoy. Preventing and Healing Myocarditis “Beware what you set your heart upon. For it surely shall be yours.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson 1) Follow an anti-inflammatory diet: Eat mostly organic fruits and vegetables especially greens, berries, carrots cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, avocado, berries and mushrooms. Include flax and chia seeds, almonds, other nuts, olive oil, beans, legumes and some fatty fish (salmon, cod, halibut) – but only use fish and seafood no more than 4 times a month due to their high mercury content. Avoid gluten, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. If sensitive to the nightshades, avoid tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. Recent studies show that no amount of alcohol is good for the heart. Most obviously, avoid smoking. For more detail on the anti-inflammatory diet see Julie Daniluk’s book, Meals That Heal Inflammation. 2) Avoid salt: Because salty food forces the heart to pump more strongly due to the increased fluid retention caused by excess sodium, it’s best to avoid eating processed foods or adding salt to your foods. Depending on medications you are using, you might need to get more or less potassium from your diet. Check with your doctor about that.

ASTRAGALUS: This herb is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine circles for its immune system boosting properties. It can help fight viral and bacterial infections that are related to myocarditis. GREEN TEA: This popular Asian beverage has many positive benefits for heart health. Its content of the amino acid L-theanine helps calm nerves and reduce the adverse effects of stress on the heart. Green tea is also a good source of catechins – bioflavonoids which prevent excessive blood clotting that could lead to heart problems. The catechins in green tea promote elasticity in arteries and that promotes heart health. Drink at least 3 cups of organic green tea daily (organic teas are free of pesticides usually seen with the non-organic type). The small amount of caffeine in green tea is offset by the L-theanine content which makes green tea more relaxing as opposed to stimulating. LILY OF THE VALLEY: This is a powerful herbal remedy for heart inflammation and chest pain. It also has a good impact on high blood pressure caused by inflammation, and it enhances circulation. It also has calming properties which could be helpful with the anxiety associated with cardiac illness. MOTHERWORT: This is another herbal remedy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and found useful in treating www.vitalitymagazine.com

viral myocarditis as well as to repair damaged arterial pathways. It too helps relieve the anxiety associated with myocarditis. NEEM LEAF: This natural remedy originates from the Neem tree in India and has been used both orally and topically for centuries by Ayurvedic physicians for its antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. It is said to revitalize the heart and protect it from disease. REISHI MUSHROOMS: These are very well known for their immune boosting properties and they also have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal effects. They are high in anti-inflammatory compounds and can be useful in any case of myocarditis. Dr. Zoltan P. 150 Research Studies Affirm Naturally Acquired Immunity to Covid-19 by Paul Elias Alexander (OPINION)

Immunology and virology 101 have taught us over a century that natural

e should not force immunity confers Covid vaccines on anyprotection against one when the evidence shows a respiratory virus’ that naturally acquired immuouter coat protein nity is equal to, or more robust and superior to, existing vaccines. Instead, we should respect the right of the bodily integrity of individuals to decide for themselves. Public health officials, and the medical establishment with the help of the politicized media, are misleading the public with assertions that the Covid-19 shots provide greater protection than natural immunity. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, for example, was deceptive in her October 2020 published Lancet statement that “there is no evidence for lasting protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2 following natural infection,” and that “the consequence of waning immunity would present a risk to vulnerable populations for the indefinite future.” Immunology and virology 101 have taught us over a century that natural immunity confers protection against a respiratory virus’s outer coat proteins, and not just one, e.g. the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein. There is even strong evidence for the persistence of antibodies. Even the CDC recognizes natural immunity for chicken-pox and measles, mumps, and rubella, but not for Covid-19. The vaccinated are showing viral loads (very high) similar to the unvaccinated (Acharya et al. and Riemersma et al.), and the vaccinated are as infectious. Riemersma et al. also report Wisconsin data that corroborate how the vaccinated individuals who get infected with the Delta variant can potentially (and are) transmit(ting) SARS-CoV-2 to others (potentially to the vaccinated and unvaccinated). This troubling situation of the vaccinated being infectious and transmitting the virus emerged in seminal nosocomial outbreak papers by Chau et al. (HCWs in Vietnam), the Finland hospital outbreak (spread among HCWs and patients), and the Israel hospital outbreak (spread among HCWs and patients). These studies also revealed that the PPE and masks were essentially ineffective in the healthcare setting. Again, the Marek’s disease in chickens and the vaccination situation explains what we are potentially facing with these leaky vaccines (increased transmission, faster transmission, and more ‘hotter’ variants). Moreover, existing immunity should be assessed before any vaccination, via an accurate, dependable, and reliable antibody test (or T cell immunity test) or be based on documentation of prior infection (a previous positive PCR or

W

antigen test). Such would be evidence of immunity that is equal to that of vaccination and the immunity should be provided the same societal status as any vaccine-induced immunity. This will function to mitigate the societal anxiety with these forced vaccine mandates and societal upheaval due to job loss, denial of societal privileges etc. Tearing apart the vaccinated and the unvaccinated in a society, separating them, is not medically or scientifically supportable. The Brownstone Institute previously documented 30 studies on natural immunity as it relates to Covid-19. The following chart is the most updated and comprehensive library list of 150 of the highest-quality, complete, most robust scientific studies and evidence reports/position statements on natural immunity as compared to the Covid19 vaccine-induced immunity and allow you to draw your own conclusion. Victoria Lorient–Faibish has released a new book entitled: Connecting: Rewire Your Relationship-Culture. Here is an excerpt:

My Top 4 Tips for Creating a Successful, Passionate Relationship

Here are some fundamentals for creating a successful long-term, passionate marriage/partnership!

Get in the Present Moment I understand that people get bored in long-term relationships. But if both people in the relationship get fully into the present moment, treasuring the here and now and the magnificence therein, they will find the surefire answer to boredom. Remember, being an adult means not giving into impulsiveness to relieve boredom. Being an adult means staying in the moment and valuing the moment you are in, and the person who is in the moment with you needs to be valued as important and special as well. For passionate relationships to occur, an effort needs to be made to make sure that each and every moment is seen and treasured. “Get present!” Start seeing the present moment as the most precious thing you

could possibly have. When you do this, you will see one of two things: (1) You will start to profoundly value what is in front of you; or (2) You will start to see what is actually there but have been ignoring. If what is in front of you is not working, your deeply present self will make you aware of what you need to do to change your situation.

VITALITY MAGAZINE – SPRING 2022

Honouring and living profoundly in the moment is the antidote to all boredom and all denial. I invite all people who are in committed, long-term relationships to start today to notice how often they are in the present, and how often they are not. Listen to your inner voice. Listen to your partner. Pay attention to the small things. I invite you to get into the present moment every single day; wake up, be present and notice this partner, this moment, this experience and this life that is yours!

Reveal Your Vulnerable Side In her book Daring Greatly, Brené Brown, a favourite author of mine, writes: “Rather than hurling judgement and advice, we must dare to show and let ourselves be seen. This is vulnerability”; and “If we can

share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can’t survive”; and “Vulnerability is the core, the heart, the centre, of meaningful human experiences.” Vulnerability can augment intimacy, safety, and emotional healing between two people. It is a fundamental way to bridge communication, reduce shame and enrich a partnership. Many people are not in touch with their vulnerability because they are too accustomed to building protective walls that mask it. They probably learned this in their family-culture, where to survive they needed to build walls instead of allow their vulnerable side to come forth. In reality, when a person is triggered, they may react with anger, irritability, annoyance, and frustration – when peeled back, we discover that what is lying underneath is hurt, sadness, pain, abandonment, and/or feelings of rejection. When people can come to the table, after peeling away their armour – their protective outer shield – with a truth that is authentically vulnerable, they are much

more likely to be well received by their partner. When revealing the more vulnerable side of yourself, you are saying, “I am not perfect and neither are you, and that’s okay; we can work on this together.” When this energy is present within a couples’ therapy session, we have something to work with that can promote healing and transformation in a couple. When a person starts to communicate with their partner on the level of vulnerability, a powerful alchemy of change occurs. If you are in a discussion with your partner and find yourself defensive, irritable or annoyed, know that if you choose to sit with yourself quietly and pay attention to your inner thoughts, you will allow your real feelings to surface, which inevitably

www. vitalitymagazine.com

will be more vulnerable feelings that will be less damaging to the dynamic. Once you are in touch with those feelings, I encourage you to come to the discussion with that instead. Pay attention to your vulnerable truth that is underneath a big layer of armour – seeming like truth that isn’t actual truth but rather a protective coating that just creates separation and breaks the bridge of intimacy and communication.

Emotional SelfSufficiency Taking responsibility for one’s own happiness is a key component and an ideal environment to nurture a healthy, stable, and passionate relationship-culture. Couples who are overly enmeshed become codepen-

dent, which leads to toxic dysfunction. Being in one’s adult aspect means that each person is taking personal responsibility for what is happening emotionally to themselves. An example of a completely unhealthy and destructive interaction is when one person who may be feeling emotionally empty then projects all of that emptiness onto the other person, essentially demanding that the other person fill their emptiness. I find that couples are much more interested and attracted to each other when both people are willing to take responsibility for their bouts of emotional emptiness as well as their flaws and foibles. This kind of adult action goes a long way toward creating a fantastic matrix of healthy connection for the couple.

Humour – A study that examined the effects of humour on relationships in pleasant versus conflict situations found that individuals who were more satisfied with their romantic relationships reported using higher levels of positive humour and lower levels of negative humour than those individuals who were less satisfied in their romantic relationships. The study also found that individuals who were not satisfied with their romantic relationships did not reduce their use of negative humour, which suggests that they did not use strategies to de-escalate a conflict. Couples who were in happy relationships tended to use less negative humour as a way to de-escalate a conflict situation. The authors of this study interpreted this shift in the use of humour as part of a strategy that is used by those with high relationship satisfaction to avoid further escalation of conflict with their romantic partners. Basic-ally, the less you value your relationship, the less you will preserve it by being unmindful about what would make something worse or better. Using negative humour is associated with lower levels of relationship satisfaction, whereas greater conflict resolution is associated with higher levels of satisfaction. In a positive relationship-culture, people are responsible for how they use humour. Sarcasm, passive aggressiveness, and digs are all part of negative humor and work to tear down a relationship. Using positive humour to uplift your partner and to lighten and encourage the energy of the couple is a good strategy to maintain relationship-culture satisfaction.

From Trauma to Triumph: Real life Stories from 12 Powerful Women to Help You Overcome your History and Thrive (Heal Yourself First) This book is a doorway to finding support, getting to know others who have been through the same experiences, and using the tools and insights that moved the authors to new outlooks and abilities. We’ve all learned these lessons in life the hard way and we want to share it with you so that you can do it the easy way! It would still require you to read through and take notes and to put into action these valuable lessons. We all experience trauma sooner or later. It can be small, repeated events or life-changing in-your-face events. Sometimes it is visible and people can empathize, but so often it is hidden away and we feel alone and overwhelmed. A lot of our childhood trauma is ignored, normalized, or wiped from our memory. It does not mean it did not happen, nor does it mean we were unaffected. Every trauma, whether we were still small or whether it happened in our adult years, leaves an impact. It is our solemn duty to ourselves to become free from what directs our lives with invisible strings, and to empower ourselves by being fully aware of our own part to play in transforming our challenges into stepping stones that will take us towards thriving. Some of us are more resilient, seemingly getting through trauma more easily than others. That is not how it really is. It is just that some of us have learned better tools with which to navigate this unpredictable world we live in. Use this book together with the free worksheet provided, and 12 bonus in-depth conversations with the authors for maximum benefit. main stressors identified in sleep research include problems or dissatisfaction at work, divorce and other marital or family difficulties, death of a loved one, major illness or injury, or crucial life changes. In modern society the prevalence of insomnia and the use of sleep medication have increased substantially over the years. Liver Depression ~ Qi Stagnation

The effects of stress have been noted in Chinese medical literature for over two millennia. During this time, effective ways of diagnosing, treating and preventing health problems associated with stress have been established. TCM Approach to Treating Insomnia

Acupuncture and herbs are curative – not palliative, as they aim to eliminate the cause of the disease instead of controlling or suppressing the symptoms

Acupuncture – is effective at moving qi and restoring the function of the Liver, and is often a good treatment for stress-related disorders, including insomnia. Essential oils can also be helpful to move qi, are cost effective, and can be combined with treatment by herbal medicine as a daily home practice. Recently, I have developed a blend of TCM essential oils based on research in China that is helpful to treat qi stagnation in patients with COVIDsomnia and/or depression and anxiety. While Liver depression qi stagnation contributes to difficulty sleeping, poor sleep can inhibit the Liver from maintaining homeostasis in response to changing conditions, causing further qi stagnation. Liver depression qi stagnation-type insomnia typically worsens with stress, emotional upset, and pre-menstrually, with sleep tending to be light and the person being easily awoken or experiencing vivid, dream-disturbed sleep and waking in the early hours. However, in practice sleep is only disturbed when this pattern co-exists with other TCM patterns that must be accurately diagnosed and simultaneously treated by the TCM practitioner to ensure a successful outcome. In TCM, depressive heat due to qi stagnation causes the body-mind to become over-heated leading to restlessness, which prevents the person sleeping or causes them to wake in the night. Chinese Herbal Medicine – is the most sophisticated herbal medicine system in the world and has always been considered pre-eminent amongst the various methods of healing within TCM. More than 100 generations of doctors over thousands of years have carefully observed patterns of illness and have used powerful natural remedies to alleviate these conditions and restore and maintain good health. TCM combines a detailed analysis of signs and symptoms with a unique system of pulse and tongue diagnosis to develop a detailed picture of the course and process of disease. After diagnosis each person will typically be prescribed an individual herbal tea, using combinations of 10 to 15 ingredients correlated to an individual’s pattern of internal disharmony. The patient will then decoct or cook these medicinals in water and take the resulting liquid/medicine twice daily. Base Herbal formulas used to treat liver disharmony: Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San (Augmented Rambling Powder) Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction); Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction) Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver) Common Herbs to course the Liver and move the qi: 24

Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) He Huan Pi (Albiziae Cortex) Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix) These medicinals are chosen and combined depending on the symptoms and co-existing patterns the patient has. In general, I would employ two, three or four of these per prescription if Liver depression qi stagnation was present depending on the severity and presenting symptoms and whether it was currently the predominant pattern or not. The formulas are crafted together to act synergistically, and every ingredient is designed to accomplish a part of the overall process of restoring balance. Upon return visits, the herbal formula is adjusted or modified by the practitioner as the patient’s condition improves. When prescribed and dispensed by a qualified practitioner of TCM, Chinese Herbal Medicine is safe with no side-effects. Modern research into acupuncture and various Chinese herbs has shown it to have fewer side effects. And unlike modern medicine, acupuncture and herbs are curative not palliative, as they aim to eliminate the pathology of the disease instead of controlling or suppressing the symptoms. Chinese medicine is therefore a viable alternative to Western medicine for treatment of insomnia. Insomnia drugs are among the most widely prescribed in the world today and are increasingly being prescribed during the pandemic to help people cope with the increased stress they are experiencing. Yet these drugs have limited effectiveness and significant side effects. Any long-term treatment of a disease has to have properties that will make the user want to continue using it. That means it must be: • Effective and provide relief of symptoms • Safe, with few unwanted side effects • Easy to use TCM, when prescribed correctly, can meet all of these criteria and can help you obtain the calm, restful and restorative sleep you require to maintain your optimal level of health. NICHOLAS WALTER ASHFIELD (1948 - 2022) A fond farewell to one of the “originals” in the natural health movement BY TAYA COOK

O

n January 19, 2022, Nicholas Ashfield passed away after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends. The infamous founder of the Toronto Healing Arts Centre left this world as he would have wished, listening to a guided meditation and being held close by those he loved. The son of Cliff and Lyn Ashfield, Nick came from humble beginnings and went on to accomplish great things. If you asked him, he was ‘just a shy kid from a small town in Saskatchewan’, but to those who knew him he was so much more. At a young age he joined the Regina Rifle Regiment with his brother Paul, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and honing his skills as a regimental marksman and drill sergeant. After leaving the regiment, Nick train-hopped his way from Grenfell, Saskatchewan to downtown Toronto with a copy of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet and thirty dollars in his pocket. It was the start of a life-changing adventure. What followed were a couple of years spent living in a hippie commune, a long stay on Ward’s Island, and numerous consciousness raising experiences. It was during this time that he found himself drawn to the philosophy of alternative medicine and subsequently joined his father Cliff and brother Paul at Chiropractic College, graduating in 1975. Always kind and eager to lend a hand to those in pain, Nick had found his calling. In 1983, after opening clinics in Forest Hill and the Annex, Nick 26

purchased two houses near Bloor and Christie and converted them into the Toronto Healing Arts Centre (THAC). Over the next three decades he transformed the space into the largest alternative healing arts centre in Canada, offering full and part-time office space to over a hundred therapists in any given year. Through his life’s work at THAC he encouraged and supported many new and established therapists with his generous and nurturing spirit while he stimulated and expanded the alternative healing community as a whole in Toronto. Always open to exploration, Nick brought float tanks to Toronto in the 1980s, and shared his practice of radionics and alternative healing with his many treasured clients. Throughout this time, Nick reflected the heart of Toronto; he was incredibly loyal to his local establishments, cheered on the Raptors, and helped out his neighbours whenever he could. He was a soldier, a sailor, and a life-long learner. As a Capricorn he felt that the best test for anything was: “Is it beautiful and does it have practical usage”. He believed in the good of people, that family should be close, and that all difficulties that seem insurmountable will pass eventually. His love of life and kind smile will be forever cherished by all who knew him, especially his wife Cathy Jo. His memory lives on in the children he was a loving father to: Taya Cook, Jasmine Shenandoah, and Keiran Ashfield, and his stepchild Tashi Fleming. He will be greatly missed by his sonin-law Jamie Cook and his grandson Jameson, along with his family in Saskatchewan, especially his brother Paul. Nick is to be cremated and buried www.vitalitymagazine.com

in Saskatchewan during a private ceremony, and the family will then be hosting a celebration of life in Toronto this Spring. For more information, to share stories, or to learn more about the Toronto Healing Arts Centre, please contact 416-535-8777 or info@torontohealingarts.ca And those who wish to share memories of Nick can also do so in the “Comments” section of Vitality’s online version of this obituary, at: https://tinyurl.com/NickAshfield Here are some comments received so far: “Nicholas was a pioneer in Toronto’s alternative healing movement and impacted many lives positively and lovingly. Shine On.” BlueskyGreen Water •••••••••••• “Thank you Vitality for the lovely post. The healing arts community meant the world to Dad and so a sincere thank you from the family to everyone who shared in the last 40 years of love ,sharing and healing with him.” Taya Cook ••••••••••••• “I light the Flame of Love and Honour the Soul of Nicholas “Spirit Wolf” Ashfield, an Elder and Grandfather in the Healing Arts and Alternative Medicine. Named Spirit Wolf for his silent presence in stewarding Sacred Space for the Healing Arts Community. We honour his Mission, Talent and Destiny to bring people together in Toronto, the city he loved where he supported healing, growth, and consciousness. As a young healer many moons ago, I opened my own Energy Medicine Practice and met a significant individual who supported and encouraged my work and the work of many others. We acknowledge Nick for his offering to our Collective Consciousness and trust that we will have the courage to take these seeds and continue to plant them; healing, evolving and changing the world one person at a time. May your physical body be given to the Earth Mother. May your Mind and Emotions return to the Light. And May your Spiritual Wisdom Dance in the Heart of Remembrance. You will be missed. You will be remembered and you will live on in the hearts of all you have touched, known and unknown. Thank you. Gaisheda Kheawok Anam Cara – Soul Friend Whispering Song School of Energy Medicine
